REMEMBER.

_____

If life be filled with gladness,
And thy cup overflow,
Remember, oh remember,
That God has willed it so;

But if instead of laughter,
The bitter tear-drops fall,
Remember, oh remember,
That his hand giveth all.

E’en though thy heart be breaking,
The man of sorrow knows,
Each bitter thrill of anguish,
That o’er thy being goes.

Complain not at his doing,
Think not lie’s cruel to thee;
Remember what he suffered
In lone Gethsemane.

Remember God is righteous,
His works all just and true;
Also, that he has promised
To ever ’bide with you.

Thy tears, thy joys shall sweeten,
And thou shalt learn to know,
That it is sweet to suffer
When he has willed it so.

MOUNT OF GOD’S HOLINESS.

_____

“But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.” Obad. 17.

MOUNTAIN in a figurative and prophetic sense means moral and spiritual safety, also stability and security against sin, also moral and spiritual elevation. The person who has ascended in it, is not on a low plane or on a level of this world, or of a likeness or similarity of this world, but is above this world of sin. God’s people can praise him for this moral and spiritual promotion, received when they get the works of Satan under their feet, and not only his works, but even Satan himself. —  Rom. 16:20. “And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly.” Satan’s hold on a person is completely broken, and himself subdued and subject to the redeemed child of God. Prevailing, triumphing grace is given in the holiness of God’s mountain. Eze. 43:12, — “Upon the top of the mountain the whole limits thereof round about shall be most holy.” A very sacred place. Then if the whole limits are most holy, no place for sinful pleasure, no place for idlers or wayward negligent ones, but for those who are seriously engaged toiling for the Master, who are zealous of good for God, and those who have set their face as a flint Zionward.

But can we be so happy as to get into this high and holy mountain? The cry is ringing and echoing though many lands. The call goes forth to all to flee from the burning wreck of sin and Babylon’s desolation, and take a soul refuge and security in the summit of the mountain of God’s holiness. Isa. 2:3. —  “And many people shall go and say, Come ye and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob.” This invitation obeyed will cause all who obey it to take a higher stand for God and the right. Surely no one could make any objections to such an ascent as would make the world better and holier, a place of more general peace and happiness. Would make better men and women, fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters. In fact a mighty change has taken place and the people who have made the ascent are living in a different clime and atmosphere and situation. It does away with all family quarrels and neighborhood jangling. All who live in the regions of family quarrels, are far below this quiet and peaceable heavenly situation.

Then who may ascend? Psa. 24:34. — “Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.” Praise God! The soul washes his hands in innocency (first work), and is cleansed from all sin (second work). His inclinations are all upward and heavenward; but if not, it will be downward and finally will reach the bottomless pit. Isa. 11:9. — “They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain.” Hence a place where love abounds to, and for all of God’s creation, are not at enmity or swords points with one another, not envying one another but, each seeking the other’s welfare and going hand-in-hand as it were, and the love of God witnessing from heart to heart and soul to soul of this great peace and prosperity that exists and abounds in this holy mountain.

Also it is a place of praise. Isa. 55:12 — “Ye shall go out [out of sin] with joy and be led forth with peace; the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees [saved ones] of the field shall clap their hands.” Thank God! It puts the entire mountain (church) in a stir of holy joy and singing at the return of the wayward ones. Thank God for the giving of praise that is to go up as sweet incense to the throne of God! Oh beloved, let us be filled with the holy enthusiasm, let us show by this that God is on the move. We say, let the whole mountain be in an uproar for God, and the world will become alarmed, and Satan will understand more than ever that we belong to God and the work is being done. Joel 3:17, 18. — “So shall ye know I am the Lord your God dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no stranger [sinner] pass through her any more. And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk [elementary- parts of the Gospel] and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with water [water of salvation,] and a fountain shall come forth of the house of the Lord.” In this is set forth in grand prophetic language the abundance of grace and the overflowing love to be enjoyed and possessed by all of God’s people. Truly God’s people are a much favored people, not to be put off in a corner on a very scanty supply, or to be upbraided and turned away empty or forsaken. But thank God, “the greater grace,” all may enjoy, as much as they are capable of possessing and enjoying.

Oh dear brethren, let us make the ascent higher and higher in this great elevation of God’s love. Jer. 31:12. —  “Therefore they shall come and sing in the height, [or summit] of Zion, and shall flow together to the goodness of the Lord.” Oh what a place of joy, flowing together in the Spirit’s power, singing in heavenly places and making melody in our hearts to the Lord, praising him in the beauty of holiness, joyful evermore! The height of the mount of God’s holiness is the nearest we will ever get to heaven in this world, and all who get there will surely take their flight or leave from the very summit of this great elevation. Praise God! Without holiness no man shall ever see God.

Again, it is a place of truth, where God dwells. Zach. 8:3 — “Thus saith the Lord; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of the Lord of hosts the holy mountain.” God dwells here in mercy and power and is with all his people. If any begin to make a descent and go coasting down hill, that is, into sin, they will find that God is not there, and they without salvation. Hence to retain truth and God’s favor is to remain in Zion.

AN ALARM AGAINST SIN, SOUNDED FROM MOUNT ZION.

_____

BLOW ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand. — Joel 2:1. Preachers of righteousness never have met with public popularity, nor never will. The greatest advocate of holiness, Jesus Christ the spotless Lamb of God, was put to death by the hands of wicked men. Paul the apostle sealed his ministry with his own blood, by suffering martyrdom for righteousness’ sake. The primitive Christians were slaughtered by the thousands because of their non-conformity to sin. They overcame through the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony, and they loved not their lives unto the death. And so in blowing the Gospel Trumpet as a warning against sin, I do not expect to become famous as a preacher, but oh I pray that this humble message may accomplish its purpose.

Comparatively speaking, there are but few that truly realize the exceeding sinfulness of sin. What is sin? The apostle John defines sin as being the transgression of the law, 1 Jno. 3:4; and also, all unrighteousness is sin. Chap. 5:17. So then sin is the act of violating God’s commandments either by omission or commission. Sin was introduced into the world by the disobedience of one man. God created man pure and upright; he gave that man a certain commandment, at the same time warning him that should he violate it he would surely die. Being thus assured of the nature of the penalty in case he violated the command of God, he knowingly and willfully transgressed God’s law. Immediately he was convicted of his guilt and sought to hide from God. See Gen. 3:10. Thus sin was introduced into the world, bringing death with it; for the wages of sin is death. Rom. 6:23. Wherefore as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned. — Rom. 5:12. Yes all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, just as deliberately as did Adam. God revealed his righteous will unto us through his precious Word, and we set it at naught. In vain did God look for righteousness on the earth; a righteous man was not to be found, no, not one.

SECRET SINS.

We may not be willing to confess our sins, but try to cover them by dishonesty. We may succeed in hiding our sins from man by trickery, but remember it is impossible to deceive God. Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance. — Psa. 90:8. Yes, dear reader, God knows all about them. And be sure your sin will find you out. — Num. 32:23. Men commit sin, and then perjure themselves, thus seeking to cover one sin with another. And there they stand like great mountains separating you from God. Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. — Psa. 32:1. But how covered? By the blood of Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world. — Jno. 1:29. Some men’s sins are open before hand, going before to judgment, and some men they follow after. — 1 Tim. 5:24. Some men sin very publicly, the community witnesseth it every day; others sin slyly, secretly; they have the name of being very moral. But I would sound the alarm, that the day of the Lord draweth nigh, and your sins are following on after you, and by the time you reach the judgment bar of God, they will be there to testify against you; and then, oh how sad! you will hear the sentence pronounced upon you, Depart, ye workers of iniquity, into everlasting fire; and the smoke of your torment will ascend forever. Poor sinner, flee to Jesus before it is eternally too late.

IGNORANT SINS.

Many seek to justify themselves in sinning, with the plea, “I don’t understand.” Paul the apostle, in writing to the Ephesians, speaks of a class of people that were alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that was in them. Eph. 4:18. If we are ignorant of the righteousness of God, it is because of the blindness of our heart. There remains no excuse for sin. God has promised wisdom and revelation to all them that call upon him, and he has given us his precious word, telling us how to be saved from sin and be made holy. The apostle Peter speaks of willing ignorance. 2 Peter 3:5. Many are willingly ignorant of God’s holiness, because they love sin, they love to gratify fleshly lusts. God winked at ignorance at one time, but he now commands all men every where to repent. Acts 17:30. And Jesus preached repentance most emphatically, saying, Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. — Luke 13:1-5. Therefore repent and turn to God, and he will give you the mind of Christ, and then you will be able to prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

AN AWFUL SIN.

There is an awful sin abounding in the land, which I feel deeply impressed to sound an alarm against; it is practiced by many women of all classes of society. It is the destruction of the life of the unborn embryo, by taking poisonous drugs compounded specifically for this diabolical practice. This sin is nothing short of murder, and that in the first degree. Many women on finding themselves pregnant, resort to these drugs for the purpose of killing their unborn babes, causing premature birth. Sometimes they are baffled in their evil purposes, only to give birth to puny, sickly children, that live a life of physical suffering, the result of their parent mother’s sin, thus literally compelled to suffer for the sin of her whose very heart should weep tears of bitterness because of her suffering offspring. This great evil is so extensively practiced in these perilous times, that wicked men are engaged in preparing these nefarious drugs for the infant embryo murder market, and then advertise abominable goods in the daily newspapers, becoming accomplices to thousands of murders. Just think of it, women who profess godliness are also guilty of this great sin, and sometimes disclose it to their neighbors as though they were proud of it. Upon the authority of God’s word I declare that no murderess hath everlasting life abiding in her; and I cry out with all the holy energy that God gives me, and warn every one that is guilty of this sin, that unless you repent of it and turn to God, the lake of fire will be your eternal home, and you will never be troubled with children there, for of such is the kingdom of God. I will therefore that

the younger women marry, bear children [not destroy them], guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully. 1 Tim. 5:14. Please at this point take up your Bible and read Prov. 31:10-31.

CONFESSION, FORGIVENESS, AND CLEANSING FROM SIN.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. — 1 Jno. 1:9. When we came to God, with a penitent heart as the poor publican did, praying God’s mercy upon us as sinners, God does freely justify and save us from all our sins by the precious blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace. — Eph. 1:7. And when the work of cleansing is wrought in our souls, by a living faith in the blood of Jesus, then we are told to sin no more. I invite all who are unsaved that may read this, to come to Jesus, for he saveth unto the uttermost all that come to God by him. And I warn all who are living in sin, that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. — 1 Thess. 5:2. Do you ask for a sign of the Lord’s coming? An adulterous and wicked generation seeketh after a sign. Some will say, “Oh they have been preaching judgment day for hundreds of years, and yet all things continue as from the beginning.” Remember that a thousand years is as but a day, and a day as a thousand years, with the Lord. The secret of it all is God’s longsuffering towards man. Read the third chapter of 2 Peter. The time draweth nigh when the Lord Jesus will come in flaming fire, taking vengeance on them that know not God, and obey not the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power. — 2 Thess. 1:8, 9. Amen.

Reamsville, Kan.

Dear Saints of God: I praise the Lord for what he has done for me. I do know by faith that Jesus saves me just now, and that his precious blood cleanses me from all sin. It is now over two years since I first heard the evening light preached, and I received it joyfully and renouned sectism. I came out of the Advent sect which I had been a member of for eighteen years, and I have never regretted it. Have never had the least desire to be back with them or to go to their meetings since I have had the light on the true church and see the evil of sectism. I have never wanted to go to sect meetings. We read in Isa. 10:27 that the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing, and bless the Lord, how true it is. I have since rejoiced in my freedom in Christ, for whom the Son makes free is free indeed. Paul tells us to stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. — Gal. 5:1. I thank God the yoke of bondage has been destroyed off my neck, and I am wearing Christ’s yoke which is easy, and the burden is light. The dear Lord has taken away from me the appetite for tea and coffee, and I give him the praise for it. I have realized his healing power at different time in the last two years. I do praise the Lord for his keeping power. I am kept by the power of God through through faith unto salvation, ready to be revealed in the last time. Pray for me that I may be faithful, and pray for my family that they may accept the truth and be saved. Your sister all given up to do the whole will of God,

Samantha A. Baker.

PRAYER, APRIL 22d.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I now feel led to write my testimony that the Lord has saved and sanctified me, by the blood of Jesus. I praise God that I am happy in Jesus, every day trusting in him, fully determined to follow Jesus, let others do as they will. I have been blind now about six years; granulation was the cause, and I took some cold. I employed a doctor and he used his best remedies and I grew worse till my sight was all gone. But now, believing as I do, that it is the will of God that my eyes should be opened and I receive my sight, I earnestly and sincerely ask all of the dear saints to earnestly pray to God for me that I may see again, that I might be able to praise the dear Lord better and do more work for him. So I desire that all the TRUMPET readers would unite their prayer to God in faith for me on the 22d of April that I may see again and I will give him all tire praise forever. Amen. Your sister in Christ, saved by the blood of Jesus,

Mary Blair.

Dear Sirs: I write you in the interests of the Master’s kingdom. Can you not come soon or send us an evangelist that an active campaign may be waged against the evil one. We have an oil town here. The churches are small and weak, but a host of people have come in on us the last year. At the same time evil is here so dominant that our hearts are bowed down. Saloons, gambling hells and brothels are carried on openly. Our population is two thousand, with perhaps three to four thousand in the oil field. Write me and oblige. Yours,

Fertigs, Pa., April 2, 1894.

Dear Brethren: We are glad to report victory through Christ, our great Redeemer. Our last report was rom Tidioute, Pa. We held meeting at Kelly Hill, March 21-23. Five consecrated for sanctification. Then held meeting in and near Mt. Pleasant meeting house; no consecrations there. The 27th and 28th we lad most precious meetings in the Hill school house. The last night thirteen were at the altar for pardon and sanctification. Several raised their hands for prayers. Also three were immersed in the Allegheny river. About seven or eight consecrated for pardon and sanctification. As soon as all were willing to get right, deep conviction fell on sinners, and showers fell upon the obedient. The brethren and kind-hearted sinners lave taken noble steps in the erection of a meeting house for the spread of the gospel here. We go on our way, April 3, to other parts. Will remain at Butler, the Lord willing, until about the 10th of April, then go home. Your brethren in Christ,

B. E. Warren and S. L. Speck.

To all the Brethren in Christ Jesus: Through the blessing of God we are at home again after a six months tour in the east. We find the church in these parts in a good spiritual condition, owing to the labors of our much beloved Brother S. L. Speck during the past winter. Since our last report we have held two series of meetings in eastern Pa. One at West Point, and the other near Dow, in Schuylkill Co. The former was not very successful, owing to great prejudice in that place. At the latter place we had good success. We preached in a house belonging to the German branch of Winebrennarianism. We found the people who worshipped there to be very spiritual. Unlike the most of Winebrennarians, they were all clean from the use of tobacco except two, who also gave up the filthy habit during our stay with them. About fifteen entered into the experience of perfected holiness, and others expressed a desire to follow into this experience. The whole congregation acknowledged the truth, and many of them promised the Lord that they would take the straight track. God bless the dear ones for their kindness to us while we were with them! Any of the churches in Ohio desiring us to hold meetings this summer, address us at Anlo, Ohio. Yours and Christ’s,

Wm. G. Schell.

Dearly Beloved Saints of God: We can report victory in our souls, and hard at work for the lost in this wicked city of 25000 inhabitants, in giving out tracts and preaching the truth every evening. A few souls thus far have consecrated themselves to God. After coming to this place, we felt it would be to the glory of God to have rooms, and have the sisters in the company to do their own cooking, and we would be more free to work for God. Of this we asked the Lord about, and two rooms were provided and part of a third one, and the same day enough food was sent in to do us a few days. We have given out quite a number of tracts and TRUMPETS, and we have come to this city, in faith, to work for God and the rescue of the lost; and if any feel led to send us tracts, etc., we will give them out to the glory of God. And beloved ones, aid us in your prayers, that a large house may be opened up for the Lord. The Lord willing, as soon as we get permission we will open up the battle in the court yard and can use several thousand tracts. Yours in much holy love, and in the faith of the gospel. Dear Saints Scattered Abroad: Grace and peace from our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. The Lord has been working with and through his people in this section of the country, since I last wrote. Bro. Byers and wife have come to stay awhile at this place, for which we all feel grateful and thank God for his flying messengers. The tent which was purchased in the East, has arrived and soon we expect to hear the songs of Zion and shouts of victory going up around the suburbs and surrounding country of this city. We are praying for a great work to be done here this summer and fall in the name of Jesus.

The dear Lord has given me three nice appointments to preach in the country every Sunday, — LaPressa, ElCajon and Lemon Grove. I have been visiting the people in that community from house to house, and I want to say to the glory of God there is a favorable feeling existing for some revivals, and the evening light being preached by the tent workers, in that community. There is some bitterness existing in this city and some portions of the country, on account of the evening light being preached by some with much human zeal, without godly understanding and wisdom. The consequences are, many have been prejudiced and imbittered against us, without hearing the real Bible doctrine preached. I see my own mistakes on this line, and I feel impressed to say to all that feel the calling of God to preach, Be careful and preach the word. Preach the word until they get so thirsty for salvation that they will drink at the fountain that never runs dry. I thought when this great light dawned upon me by the Holy Spirit, that I could convince the world in a short time of the one church, etc., but alas! I find they are just as much attached to their idols as I was. May God show his little ones wisdom, is my prayer, for Jesus’ sake. May God’s richest blessings follow you where- ever you are called in his vineyard. I pray much for God’s messengers that are going to and fro preaching his gospel.

Dear Saints of God: This morning finds us sweetly saved in Jesus. Since we last reported the Lord has been with us in power, both in healing the afflicted, and in saving many precious souls. The meeting at Smith Port was a victory for God. There were eleven consecrations. A few were saved out of the M. E. and Disciple sects. There were nine saints buried with Christ in baptism. We closed the meeting March 11. We then began a series of meetings at Georgeville, The Flat, Richmond and North Point. In these meetings there were about sixteen consecrations, and eighteen baptized. We then took leave of the saints in Indiana Co., and returned to Blanco, this county, March 31. Held three meetings at Blanco which strengthened the little church there. The truth is well established in Indiana Co. The evening light had never been preached in that county, until last fall, the Lord saw fit to choose and send us (the least of God’s little ones) there with the glad tidings of salvation. We began the battle for God in that place on the 16th of last Nov. Since that time the Lord has wrought a mighty work there in the upbuilding of his kingdom. To him be all the praise and honor. There are four churches established now in Indiana Co. At North Point there is a church of seventeen saints who hold regular prayer meetings, also a Sabbath school of about forty scholars. At Georgeville there are about forty saints well established in the second grace. Also a Sabbath school of about fifty scholars. They have rented a hall for two years to hold meeting in. At Smith Port, there are about twelve saints who hold regular prayer meetings. Also there are about twelve saints at The Flat out in the evening light. There is a great harvest to be reaped there yet. There were many very urgent calls for meetings which we could not fill. If any of God’s ministers feel led to go there, you will find a large field of labor open, that promises a rich harvest of souls. After a few weeks rest, we will go on board the Floating Bethel, the Lord willing. Pray for us, that we may keep in God’s order and do his will in all things. Your saved brother,

H. M. Riggle.

Merrill, Mich., April 3, 1894.

To all the Dear Saints, Greeting: May grace and peace abound unto you. After the meeting in Tekonsha we went to Coldwater; held a few meetings which were very precious seasons to the few saints there. Some conviction; but pride and sect influence kept them back. We then went to Batavia; held three meetings. Roads almost impassable; small congregations and not much interest manifest. We then came to Litchfield in Hillsdale Co. Held meeting in the hall one week. At first much prejudice existed, and the congregations were very small. But after much prayer and firmness on the line of the truth, the people began to come out and the hall was filled, and the people listened to the truth with interest and some conviction. Sectarian influence is great there, but we believe there are some honest souls in even that place who will yet walk in the light. We held meetings over Lord’s day at Groverville school house, where dear Sisters Hall and Fahr live. The people in that place seem much drawn toward the truth. On Monday we started for our home. Having sent a card ahead to dear Bro. Polley who lives at Eckford Station about seven miles south-east from Marshall, he had meeting appointed in the school house where we preached the Word to a very attentive congregation. We were much blessed of God in meeting the dear souls from North Tekonsha whom God has redeemed. I pray God to keep them true. On our way home we visited the little church in Elbe Tp., Gratiot Co. where Bro’s Burden and Collins labored this winter; found the little ones joyful in glory. Since arriving home we have attended the meeting in St. Louis, where the Lord is using Bro. Grover, much to the glory of God. Well we are saved to the uttermost, sanctified wholly, kept both body and soul. Amen. Our address is Merrill, Mich. We are all the Lord’s to do any work he has for us. Any one desiring meeting on Sunday or two-day meetings can correspond with me if the Lord leads. We will work a farm, but are willing to spend all the time we can spare for the good of souls. Your brother,

T. J. Cox.

Warrington, Eng., March 28, 1894.

Dear Readers of the Trumpet and All Lovers of the Truth: This beautiful afternoon finds us saved and well, for which our hearts go up to our blessed Master in thanksgiving for the same. Dear brethren, this is a blessing in this day and age of darkness, which many profess and few possess. Oh! the darkness and tradition that pervades this beautiful country, as well as your boasted land of America. And if it were not for the promises of our dear Master given in his blessed word, surely there would be nothing to encourage us in this conflict. If ever in our lives we felt the oppression of darkness, and beastly power arrayed against God and his word, it is to day and in this place. We have just come in from having a battle with two Satanic spirits, which claim their abiding place for the present in Manchester, until the fulfillment of time when they will have to return to their nativity. The spirits were in the shape of two females who came to us pretending to enquire when and where we were holding meetings. After informing them that our meetings had closed for the present, then one of them said she was informed chat we were Latter Day Saints, or Mormons; and that she had a sister who was connected with that sect, and she pretended to know (and perhaps she did) a man by the name of Hanes, of whom she spoke very much. So after informing them that I knew no such a man in this country, and that we were children of God contending for the faith once delivered to the saints, and duly warned them in the name of Jesus to be careful of the Mormons, or Latter Day Saints, as they believed in a plurality of wives, and that many dear souls had been led astray through their teaching; so I gave them some papers and tracts and bade them good bye. They departed as I supposed, warned of their danger in having anything to do with the above named sect or people. But lo and behold, those supposed inquirers after light turned out to be acting the part of a detective, and in the course of a few hours returned, handing me a letter which read as follows:

To Mr. and Mrs. Rupert:

“My daughter and her friend came over from Manchester to prove to me that you belong to the Latter Day Saints; so having proven it without a doubt I decline to have anything more to do with you. And you told me there were none of your people in Manchester, and they know that there are; so I say farewell. Mrs. ——”

The above writer, I believe once was a true child of God to all the light she had, and God wonderfully blessed her and gave her light by his Holy Spirit; and she made a consecration for sanctification which she claimed, but through the persecution of her ungodly husband she gave over to the evil one, but came and renewed her covenant with God and was happy in the joy of his salvation, although her husband and children continued to try her in every possible way, but could not prevail until the devil hatched up this lie, and the poor soul, believing her daughter that we were Mormons, just because there was a class of such people in Manchester, she took it for granted that we were the same. God have mercy on her poor soul, and all those that had a part in raising this lie for the overthrow of her soul. Now you see the maliciousness and subtlety of Satan going over to Manchester to get two instruments to fill his design and thinking thereby to brand us with this lie. But we rebuke the devil in the name of Jesus, and believe all things work together for good to them that love the Lord. Dear ones, take warning, you that have lately started, and hold fast to that which is good, and let no man take your crown. The word of God has been fulfilled in Matt. 13:20, 21; Luke 12:51-53; Matt. 23:13. May the dear Master keep us all standing fast in the liberty which is in Christ. Amen.

Wife and I have been in this city almost two months, fighting the good fight, and as yet but a few souls are willing to pay the full price and get the pearl of great price. When we first came we rented a house and fixed up a room to hold meeting in, and advertized the same, but few turned out; so we gave out children’s meeting, and we had the house filled. We continued these meetings a few weeks when a brother invited us to his house, where he gave us a nice little room which saved us paying for rent and coal. The Lord has blessed him already and will ever do so if he proves faithful. We then rented a hall in the business part of town and advertized the meeting, but the attendance was poor on account of the holidays, and most every sect had meeting. So we have closed, hoping to be able to return and reap what we have sown; if we do not, I pray some one else may. Wife and I return to Liverpool where we will arrange matters and be ready to go anywhere the Lord may say go, and perhaps that will be Germany. We ask the prayers of all God’s people that we may be able to stand and speak as we ought. We would love to see all your dear faces, and as we read the TRUMPET our hearts go out to all. Praise God! If we are all true to God, some day we will meet where all is bliss and peace. May we all stand true till death. God has a few souls here in Warrington I expect to meet in heaven. I pray God to sink them down in his will and give them much wisdom and patience. Pray for the work and workers in England. Love to all. Your brother and sister in Christ,

J. H. and H. A. Rupert.

To All the Saints: I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony. Oh praise the Lord! He gives me real victory in my soul. We have found the doctor for both soul and body. This has been the devil’s country, but praise the Lord, he had mercy on us and has sent the truth here that we may be saved. I have been serving the devil all my life, until about two months ago the Lord had mercy on me and showed me the light. Praise God, I stepped out and took it. I would like very much to have some help, some of God’s true children. Please come and help us spread the blessed truth of our God. Pray for us that we may ever be found faithful in all things whatsoever our God commands us to do. Your brother and sister in Jesus,

Dear Ones in Christ: I feel led of the Lord this morning to write my testimony. I was converted when quite young in the M. E. sect, and lived to all the light I had: but praise God when more light came I accepted it. Brother Geo. Keeling came to this place and preached the pure word, and I accepted it. I was one week getting through, but praise God I have crossed the stream and stepped out into the pure light. I gave up the M. E. sect which I clung to so close. I wouldn’t be back where I was one week ago for all this world. For now I am free in Christ, given up to work for the Lord. I am your sister, saved and sanctified,

Dear Saints: May the blessings of God dwell richly in your hearts. This leaves me sweetly saved, and praising God for a full and free salvation. Oh how much I do see the great importance of being established and settled down in God’s word. Oh how the people are starving to death for the want of the true gospel. I have talked with a good many of the honest hearts in regard to this Bible salvation, and they seem really in earnest to see some of God’s preachers come to Nebraska City and hold a meeting, so that they can get this salvation that I have been telling them about. So I believe that if some one filled with the Holy Ghost and with fire would come here and open a meeting in the name of the Lord, there would be much good done. Pray much for me that I may stand firm for Christ and his cause. From your saved brother, all on the altar,

To all the Saints of God: I feel the Spirit stirring me to write a few words of testimony. Wife and I are still rejoicing with perfect freedom in our souls, over all the powers of darkness, and feel the real holy love of God burning in our souls. We want to say through the TRUMPET to those who are acquainted with us, that we have moved from Gaskell, to near Washington, Kan. which will be our address hereafter. While at Gaskell we had the glorious privilege of witnessing the establishing of Zion in four different places. To God be all the glory. Well the Lord has planted us here for the coming season, and already we can see Satan marshalling his hosts for the battle, but the battle belongs to the Lord, and we have the armor on and our weapons are not carnal, but mighty through God. Glory be to Jesus! Now dear saints, pray for us that we may keep humble, always feeling our weekness, but trusting all to God who is our strength; and that our hearts and minds may be kept free from all the delusions of the devil. Your brother and sister in the one body, and kept by the Lord,

Dear Saints: I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony. I am saved, sanctified and kept by the mighty power of God. I am so glad that I am at the fountain of God’s love, where I can ever abide. Oh how it melts my heart when I think how much the dear Savior bore for us. By his stripes we are healed. Oh dear ones, let us live low at his feet and learn of him, for he is meek and lowly in heart. If there ever was a time the children of God need to watch and pray, it is now, for the devil is raging and foaming against us. I am not trusting in earthly help, but in the living God. I have a deep amen to his will in all things. Your saved brother and sister, under the blood,

Dear Saints of God: I want to add my testimony with the rest of the saints. I am saved and sanctified now. Truly the Lord is good to me. I was taken with neuralgia in my head and face; it was almost more than I could stand. But when I could do no more, I went and talked to Father about it and told him that I could not stand the pain, and that I was his child, and just asked him to heal me. And the pain left me for about twelve hours, then returned; and I told Father that 1 was healed and would trust him for time and eternity. Then I saw that it was a test of my faith. Then the pain left and I was healed. Oh praise God for his goodness! I give God all the glory. We have no saints here, wife and I are all. Dear Bro. Wm. H. Miller was here a few hours. Oh what sweet fellowship we have with the true saints of God! Pray for us, that God may have his way with us. From your saved brother,

To the Family of God Scattered Abroad, Greeting: I am glad that I can testify to what God has done for me, and truly my soul shall make its boast in the Lord; the humble shall hear thereof and be glad. And it is not by works of righteousness which I have done, but according to his mercy he saved me, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost. When I look back over my past life I am made to exclaim with the Psalmist, Surely goodness and mercy have followed me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Only David said, “shall follow me,” but my experience has been, “has followed me.”

When I was but a child I wanted to serve God, and I know I had faith in God. I remember when quite young that one day I knelt down in the presence of God and vowed to him if he would answer my prayer in regard to a certain thing that my life should be pure, and God has helped me to pay that vow. But of course as I grew older, rebellion was in my heart. I think my chief sin was disobedience to my parents. When I was fifteen years old my mother died. How much her death did hurt me when I remembered all my stubbornness toward her! And still I do not think that I was any worse than the majority of children. Just the day before she died she looked at me and said, “Mollie, be a good girl.” So after she died I repented bitterly of my sin.

Not long afterwards there was a protracted meeting begun in the neighborhood, and the thought occurred to me, Why should not I come out before the world as a Christian? So at the first opportunity I went to the altar in company with my oldest sister, and from that time I confessed Christ as my Savior. And not long afterwards, not having any light on God’s church I joined the United Brethren. And I would just say concerning obeying parents, that I still find that by obeying my earthly father in all things that are just and right, I thereby obey my heavenly Father. And although I am much older now I realize that God still requires it of me.

About nine or ten months after I began to serve God, a minister came to the school house where I attended meeting, preaching holiness; but I was not convicted that God had anything more for me, for I thought that I was a Christian and that was all that was necessary. But one day the minister came to our house and talked to us about sanctification, and I was very much convicted that that was what I needed, for up to this time I had had to contend with anger in my heart and pride; and God made it so plain that it was his will to take it all out. So that night I went to the altar and made a perfect consecration of myself and all that was dear to me, and took sanctification by faith. When an opportunity was given to testify I was the first one up on my feet, and testified boldly to what God had done for me.

Oh! the scales were wonderfully fallen from my eyes. I had never seen into eternity so before. The next morning I realized that I was crucified of a truth. I was a vessel sanctified and meet for the Master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.

But I soon began to be troubled at what it was going to take, and saw that it meant a separation from all my old friends and every earthly pleasure, and even that I was saved out of the cold formality of U. B. ism. So I am sorry to say that I began to take back the price. Oh the mercy and longsuffering of God to spare my life during all that rebellion! Sometimes for a short time I would yield to God, and how his peace would flow into my soul, and then I would take the price back again. I even crossed the river and went to Missouri to try and get away from my thoughts, but God followed me even there. But when I came back I went to meeting and kept up my old profession of religion. For a while I realized that the wrath of God was upon me, and after a while I believe God had mercy upon me. And I give God all the glory for the blessings received during the next four or five years that followed. I saw very plainly that I could not live to please God if I did not give all up to his will. Three years ago this spring some of God’s holy ones came in the neighborhood and began to hold meetings. And I knew my time had come, so I died out to the world and all worldly ambitions, and did not stop until I was sanctified. And I received a more blessed experience than I had ever had before.

I had heard the saints talk of having the Holy Ghost, and of perfect love, and my soul was not satisfied until I got it. And God very plainly let me see the necessity of coming out of sectism; although at first I tried to cling to it and get sanctified that way, but I could not. I did not get along at all. But after I gave it up in my heart, it was not long afterwards till I was sanctified.

Since that time God has taught me many things, and sunk me deeper down in his will. A while after I was sanctified, God made it plain to me that I had to be willing to leave all and follow him, that he required the consecration of me then, but not to go then. I mean to work for souls. In the past year the Lord has used me some to teach the Word, and has blest me thereby more than I was able to ask or think. To him be all the praise. I realize that the time will soon come when more responsibility will fall upon some of us, and I ask your prayers that I may do the will of God in all things. I know that his grace is sufficient. Amen. Your sister in the love and fellowship of Jesus,

Mary H. Mechan.

QUESTIONS.

_____

  1. Please explain Luke 19:23, Psalms 15:5.

ANSWER: These scriptures read as follows: “Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury?” — Luke 19:23. “He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.” — Psa. 15: 5.

At first sight some may conclude these scriptures do not harmonize, but when we consider the meaning of the word “usury” and the way it is used all is easily understood. Webster defines it 1st, as, “Interest, or practice of taking interest.” 2d, as “Illegal interest,” that is, a higher rate of interest than is right to take. Unlawful interest is doubtless what the Psalmist had reference to in the above verse.

In the other verse Jesus was trying to teach the lesson of using our possessions and talents for God, and not hide them away, nor fail to make improvement. There are many people who have good talents and abilities for working for God who do not improve them. And for that reason some even lose what they have. The preacher is not the only one who is to work for God. If a person is blessed with business abilities, is a mechanic, farmer, etc., he should be just as much consecrated to God with all he has, as the minister who forsakes all and goes forth to preach the Gospel. Souls are at stake, and if he fails to do his duty on his farm or in his business, and does not render unto God that which belongs to Him, at whose hand will their blood be required? At the hands of the minister? No, not if he had a willing heart and was unable to go because some one else failed in duty. The man who has money must have it just as fully consecrated to God as the farmer has his farm.

Two persons may receive a legacy of $1,000 each, and for certain reasons feel under obligations to retain the principal. One having farming abilities, invests his money in a farm; the other puts his money out at interest. One has the increase of his farm for living and spending purposes, while the other has the income from his money for the same purpose. One should be just as much consecrated to God as the other.

Some entertain the idea that it is wrong for a child of God to take interest under any circumstances whatever, for money loaned to brethren. Such is not a scriptural idea, but merely a matter of conscience. Sometimes people allow their conscience to run at random and become fanatical either way about such matters.

There was a time in certain countries when it was unlawful to take interest, or money for the use of money, and was forbidden under severe penalty, therefore it was called usury. At the present time the common laws of almost all countries allow a certain rate of interest to be charged to a borrower of money to be paid to the lender for its use. Any rate above the legal rate allowed by law is considered usury. In other words, usury is unlawful interest. The law does not require any one to charge interest, but only gives them the privilege of doing so. Some do not take interest at all; others only under certain circumstances. There are circumstances where it would not be right to charge interest. We have known persons who loaned money who did not feel clear to charge interest, yet required a note calling for interest and when the interest became due they marked it paid.

A brother once made the statement that a child of God should in no circumstances put his money out at interest, and if any of his brethren wanted to borrow it, he was under obligations to loan it to him without interest, for the length of time desired. Such is not a scriptural statement; if it were, the one who had recently come in possession of $1,000 cash, would soon be relieved of his cash and he himself look elsewhere for a living, while those who borrowed it used it a lifetime, if they so desired.

In the first place, the brother who made the statement did not understand the real meaning of usury, and that God required us to be wise stewards over what he has placed in our hands, and had not properly taken the matter to the Lord. The principle he set forth of borrowing, would be equally as obligating to the one who spent his money for a farm, by which to provide for his family; and should one of his brethren come along and say, “Here, brother, I would like to borrow your farm for about five years.” According to his teaching he would be under obligation to say, “All right, the Word teaches that we are not to turn away from those who would borrow, and we are not to take any interest, of increase, so you just take it and have all you can raise.” Such would not be consistent.

The word of God always harmonizes when rightly divided, and in such cases it is easily understood. But the great trouble is, people often try to harmonize the Word with their own views, and get things badly mixed; instead of putting their views in line with the Word. A good way to get confused and mixed up, is to take some passages of scripture that have no connection and misapply them, and then try to reason out some way to make the application all right. Because the Word says that Judas “went out and hanged himself,” and in another place it says, “Go thou and do likewise,” does not mean that we are all to go and hang ourselves; yet both are Bible quotations. Such a construction would not be rightly dividing the Word.

Concerning the use of money and property, it is not right to hoard up the treasures of this world, and let souls go down to ruin around you when you might be using your means to their rescue. What you have, let it be consecrated to God and used for him. If you have faculties and opportunity of using money and property while in yOur possession, to the glory of God in winning souls, then go ahead and use it. If you see where your property and money can be used more to the glory of God than you can use it, then there is the place for it. The Lord is coming some of these days. Be sure that you will be able to render a proper account unto him as a faithful steward.

  1. Can children of God give an entertainment to the glory of God, such as solos, quartets, duets, temperance pieces, given as a stage performance, and charge at the door?

ANS. No. God’s children are to keep themselves “unspotted from the world.” Jas. 1:27. Such things belong to worldly minded people, and not to the church of God.

  1. Should a Christian go to a dance?

ANS. No. Read Jas. 1:27.

  1. Is it right for God’s children to commune with sect people?

ANS. No. Read 2 Cor. 6:14-17; Rev. 18:4. The communion service of the Lord’s supper is in commemoration of the death and suffering of our Lord Jesus Christ. The people in sectism do not fully discern the “body” which is the church (Col. 1:18-24), consequently, are unable to properly commemorate the same. And those who do discern in the clear light of the Word, are not to be partakers with them in such things.

  1. What is meant by “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed.” Jas. 5:16. What faults are meant?

ANS. The faults spoken of here, doubtless has reference to a confession of the cause of the disease or sickness, or whatever has been done that would in any way be a hindrance by way of preventing an answer from God.

  1. Is it right for us to say whether our neighbor shall drink whiskey or not?

ANS. Certainly, we have a right to tell our neighbor that he should not drink whiskey, when the word of God says in 1 Cor. 6:10 that drunkards shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Preach a full salvation to such persons, that God is not only able to deliver from drunkenness, but is able also to take away the appetite for whiskey.

  1. Is it scriptural for women to vote?

ANS. There is nothing in the scriptures to prevent a woman from voting, any more than to prevent a man from voting. But neither men nor women in God’s church have any business going to the polls and tampering with politics, by voting with any of the political parties of to day. Jesus says, “My kingdom is not of this world.” Jno. 18:36. And he also says that his children are not of the world, even as he is not of the world. Jno. 17:16. How does it look for brethren who claim to be of “one heart” and “one mind,” of “one accord,” etc., go to the polls and kill each other’s vote by one voting the Republican ticket, another the Democratic ticket, another the Prohibition ticket, another the People’s ticket? Perhaps none of them knowing but little about for whom, or what they were really voting, further than a hearsay about it. Does such really seem saintly and Christ-like? It seems more like division and contention than unity, and should be left where it belongs.

  1. Give me the best Bible instructions, of members of the church using tobacco. I am opposed to it. Is it a sin for them to use it?

ANS. In order to give a Bible answer to this, it is necessary to know what a Bible church member is, also something about what is the church. And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all. — Eph. 1:22, 23. Here we find that the church is the body of Christ. And God sets all the members in the body as it pleaseth him. 1 Cor. 12:18. By one spirit. Verse 13. The 27th verse says, “Now, ye [the children of God] are the body of Christ, and members in particular.” Jesus says that he is the door. Jno. 10:9. He openeth and no man shutteth; and shutteth and no man openeth. Rev. 3:7.

His church is to be “without spot or wrinkle, holy and without blemish.” Eph. 5:27. Yea, it is to be a clean church. Verse 26. The members are to be holy. Heb. 12:14. “I am the vine, ye are the branches.” Jno. 15:5. Surely then if the branches are holy the fruit will be holy. Can any one soaked and steeped in the filth of tobacco feel at home in such a place. If such a one had never heard a word taught against the filthy habit, and the Lord would forgive his sins, he would not go far in the service of the Lord until he would be convicted enough to lay it aside as one of the “superfluities” which the apostles said lay aside, as a besetting sin; or to cleanse himself from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, etc., according to 2 Cor. 7:1. The use of tobacco defiles the body, injures the mind and health, has a tendency to pollute a man, defiles his breath and God’s pure air; is disgusting to good society, and unfits a person to fulfill the word of God until he is delivered from such a filthy habit. In speaking of the coming of the Lord, the word says, Rev. 22:11. — “He that is filthy, let him be filthy still.”

  1. Please answer though the TRUMPET, and tell me if this quotation is from the Bible or not; if it is, please tell me where to find it.

“I will write my law on every man’s heart, and every man shall know for himself and not one for another.” Your sister in Christ,

L. A. P.

ANS. The scripture referred to doubtless is Jer. 31:31-34. — Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers, in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was a husband unto them, saith the Lord. But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts: and will be their God, and they shall be my people. And they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: For they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

PRIDE OF THE WORLD.

_____

“THE fear of the Lord is to hate evil. Pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth do I hate.” — Prov. 8:13. It tells plainly if we fear God we will late evil, and we will also hate pride, for God hates pride. If we want to be God’s true children we must throw off all pride and every thing that is not of God. And it tells in Prov. 14:3. “In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them.

Praise God for his blessed words! The lips of the wise shall preserve them. “Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower, which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine. — Isa. 28:1. And it also tells in the second and third verses, “Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one, which is a tempest of hail and a destroying storm, as a flood of mighty waters overflowing, shall cast down to the earth with the hand. The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim, shall be trodden under feet.”

That is where the prophet threatened Ephraim, for their pride and drunkenness. Oh how much there is going on now in this world of sin at the present day! There is so much pride, drunkenness, and wickedness of every sort. Oh when I think of it my heart goes up in prayer to God, that they will turn from their wicked ways and seek God before it is too late.

“Thy terribleness hath deceived thee, and the pride of thine heart, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, that holdest the height of a hill: though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith the Lord.” —  Jer. 49:16. No matter whether we are here or there, or where we are, if our hearts are full of pride God will bring us down, as it says in that verse, I will bring thee down from thence, saith the Lord. Oh dear brothers and sisters in Christ, let us live humble at the feet of Jesus, and be ready and willing to obey God. Whatever he has for us to do, let us do with a willing heart. May we not build up pride nor uphold any one in pride, for God who is above and greater than us all, knoweth our hearts.

“For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.” And it says in the 17th verse, “And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever.” Oh how blessed and true are those words, but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever! I feel so thankful that we can do the will of God and we will abide in him forever. Oh I do thank God that he has forgiven all of my sins, and that I can abide in him. I am determined as long as God spares me to live, to do his whole will and to live up to the Bible as God gives me light. Oh let us all live up to his precious word, as fast as God does show us, so we can abide in him and he in us. Let us keep pride and everything that is not of God, away from us forever, and stand firm until the end, and we will receive a crown that is waiting for us. God bless you all. Amen. Your sister saved and sanctified, and kept by the power of God,

Lizzie Smith.

Dear Saints of God: I am thanking and praising God for freedom. He keeps me saved each day, and I am abundantly satisfied. He has freed me from all the bands of sectism. Have never seen anything there for me to go back for. I am now in the church that no man can open or shut. Pray that I may ever be kept low and humble. Your sister washed in the blood,

Dear Saints of God: We are praising God for salvation. He saves and keeps us by his power. It has been more than five months since I left the sects. I was a tobacco user for nearly thirty years, and as great a slave as could be. But by the grace of God he has saved me from all filthiness of the flesh, for which we praise his name. We are walking in the light as Christ is in the light, and we have fellowship one with another, realizing that the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin. Praise his holy name! We are holding meeting twice a week on Thursday night and Sunday evening, and the Lord is blessing our labor. We expect to commence a Sunday school soon. The Lord has raised up several good workers in this part and the work is going on grandly. There are quite a number of people that are almost persuaded to come out with us. Pray for us and them. Your brother rejoicing in the truth, saved and sanctified,

Dear Brethren in Christ: I am much pleased with the TRUMPET; have been greatly blessed by reading it. Praise the dear Lord! Oh! I do pray that this evening light will shine forth until it reaches every corner of this dark world. I hope that God in his own due time will send his servants over this way, filled with power of the Holy Ghost. In these latter days it seems as if Satan has got people lulled to sleep. This morning I am well, saved and trusting alone in Jesus. The Lord has done great things for me, whereof I am glad, and rejoice with exceeding joy. I was a drunkard; hardly knew what it was to be sober, and had used tobacco for twenty-five years. But praise the name of the Lord forever, he took away the thirst for rum and desire for tobacco, and it has not been a temptation to me since. Now this is what the power of God can do for them that trust him. I believe that God can do a greater work for me. May God bless his saints every where, and may we watch and pray, for we know not the hour our Lord shall come. Yours in the faith,

T. J. Eagleson.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I feel that it is a privilege as well as a duty I owe to God to write my testimony in regard to his dealing with me. I was converted to the Christian religion 35 years ago. I had a wonderful conversion, one that I could never doubt. I felt that my name was written in heaven, but as it was the custom, I thought I must identify myself with some church; so my name was enrolled on the W. M. church, of which I have been a member until last June. The dear Lord in a very mysterious way led me to attend the camp meeting at Grand Junction, and there the Lord led me out of sectism. And I do praise God for what he has done for me. The lust of the flesh, the pride of life, and the love of the world and all sectarianism is completely destroyed. I am now 66 years old and have always indulged in drinking tea and coffee, but praise the Lord, I have no use for it any more. He has placed my feet upon the solid Rock and established my goings, and I have presented my body a living sacrifice to him. I find it very easy to keep from bad habits when Jesus reigns within. I praise him this morning for sanctifying grace. Pray for me that I may be faithful until death. Your sister in Christ,

E. B. Stratton.
