LET ME STAY.

_____

Let me stay. I would labor
In the vineyard of the Lord:
For the fields are ready, whit’ning.
Jesus said so in his word.
Let me thrust the Spirit sickle
In the fields already white.
Let me blew the gospel trumpet.
Let me work with all my might.

Let me stay, and warn poor sinners
Of the danger they are in.
While by Christ they’re unprotected.
Foes without and fears within.
Let me tell them how he loved them.
When he died upon the tree.
When he cried in grief and anguish.
“Why hast, Thou forsaken me?”

Let me stay a little longer,
Gathering for the garner, sheaves,
Golden sheaves. O precious Jesus,
Stars in Jesus’ crown complete.
Let me finish all my labor,
Then my armor I’ll lay down,
And with Jesus Christ my Savior,
Ever wear a starry crown.

Then I’ll range the holds of heaven.
And with angels ever sing.
Glory! glory! hallelujah!
Praises to our blessed King!
Then with white-robed seraphs worship
’Round the Father’s great white throne.
Always crying. Thou art worthy.
Thou, my God, and Thou alone.

Light.

_____

“THE night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us, therefore, cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.” Rom. 13:12. The above scripture refers to the ushering in of this gospel dispensation, and as well, applies to this “evening time” when the “true light” is again shining. In the morning of this dispensation, the light dawned dear and bright upon this world. The “sun of righteousness arose,” and shed his glorious rays of light over this world. The “God of heaven set up his everlasting kingdom,” and his righteous judgments streamed throughout the earth. There was but “one fold — church — and one shepherd.” This “pure church” Christ built himself. Mat. 16:18. He is its head, Eph. 5:23, door, John 10:7, 9, foundation, 1 Cor. 3:11, and organizer. Mat. 16:18. 1 Cor. 12:18, 28. God’s people were all of “one heart, and of one soul,” and “great grace and power” rested upon them. Acts 4:32. 33. Because of this, signs and wonders followed. Devils were cast out, the sick were healed, blind eyes were opened, etc., yea, even the dead were raised. But this clear light was soon eclipsed by the “dark night” of the apostasy. Read Isa. 21:11, 12. Amos 8:9-13. Micah 3:5-8. 2 Thess. 2:3-8. As early as the last of the first century many heresies existed. These soon ripened into an awful “beast” power called the papacy. Rev. 13:1-8. The sixteenth-century reformation brought forth a degree of light; and in fact every reformation since that time has been an increase of light on the past. But all through Protestant sectism there has been a mixture of light and darkness, truth and error, which is called in the word of God, the “cloudy day.”

But now, brethren, we are taking part in the last great reformation this side the coming of Christ. Upon us is shining the glorious “evening light.” Zech. 14:7-9. O hallelujah! It is streaming in my soul; it illuminates my entire being, and fills me with glory. Praise God! “The darkness — apostasy — is past,” the clouds have disappeared, and we have reached “clear day” again. Therefore “let us put on the whole armor of light” and advance as the light increases. No doubt you have noticed some time, after a long, dark, gloomy, rainy day. bow, about sunset, the clouds would break away, and the sun would shed forth its glorious rays. What a beautiful picture the western sky would present! How it would cheer you up! Dear ones, that is a picture of this present reformation. The glorious light of God’s truth is sending its last rays over this darkened world. O that men would walk in the light before the night of eternity overtakes them!

Of this time it is written. “Then shall thy light break forth as the morning” — apostolic days. — Isa. 58:8. This reformation is a revival of the “whole truth,” and the signs are following “them that believe.” Yet, brethren, how much is implied in the above scripture! It means to reach the same depths of consecration, and humility, to attain to the same depths of knowledge, wisdom, power and faith, that they had in the apostolic church. My brethren, God is stirring my soul! Let us each one “dig” down as never before. Do not skim over, go to the bottom. It pays. Again the prophet says, “Moreover the light of the moon — church — shall be as the light of the sun — Christ, — and the light of the sun shall be seven fold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the Lord bindeth up the breach of his people (restores his pure church), and healeth the stroke of their wound. Isa. 30:26. Praise God! God’s work is on a forward move. No more darkness before us, but a constant increase of light until the final blast of eternal judgment. Read the precious promise, “Thy sun shall no more go down (that is, this glorious reformation shall no more be eclipsed by an apostasy); neither shall thy moon (church) withdraw itself (go into darkness); for the Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended. Thy people also shall be all righteous: * * * a little one (meek, humble) shall become a thousand, and a small one (dead to self) a strong nation; I the Lord will hasten it in his time.” Isa. 60:20-22. But what is this glorious light that is now shining? It is Christ shining forth through his truth, and working all and in all in his church. Jesus says, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. Jno. 8:12. We follow Christ through his truth. It is our “lamp.” Psa. 119:105. As we get the truth “in us” it becomes the light of Christ in us. See Psa. 119:130. The more truth we get in us the more light we have: and “in his light” we constantly “see more light.” Psa. 36:9. This reformation is a revival of the whole truth. Hence it is the pure light. But this’ light increases to us as we get a knowledge of the truth, and to walk in the light is to obey the truth. God has called us into his “marvelous light.” 1 Pet. 2:9. Yea, “hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints of light.” Col. 1: 12. Get filled with the truth, and your whole being will be “full of light.” Mat. 6:22. The more truth we get in us, the more faith, power and humility we will have.

And now while the whole truth is being thundered forth, and the works of darkness are being brought to light Satan is trying to counterfeit the work of God by also making a “shine.” He is to-day “transformed into an angel of light” (his ministers also), to deceive the people. 2 Cor. 11:14, 15. He is now working on a sectarian and sect-compromising so- called holiness line. Free Methodists and Pentecosters falsely call it “perfect love.” Thousands are thus being duped by the devil. But says one, “They preach much truth and are almost in line with the Word.” That may be all true. But remember the class of people who are nearest right, and yet reject some part of God’s word are the worst counterfeits. But thank God, the thunderbolts of God’s truth are knocking down the devil’s hiding places, and tearing off his coverings. Ezek. I 13:10-15. Isa. 28:17-20. These people can make quite a shine where the evening light has never been preached. But when God’s “little ones” filled and illuminated with the light and and glory of God go into communities where they are, and preach the whole gospel, their so-called “fire” goes out like the “fox-fires” of Pennsylvania before the rising of the morning sun.

“But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, * * * ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep as do others: but let us watch and be sober.” 1 Thess. 5:4:6. “Yet a little while is the light with you: walk while ye have light, lest darkness come upon you.” Jno. 12:35. Many to-day reject the true light, and accept “darkness for light.” Jesus says of such, “If then the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness.” Mat. 6:23. “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth; but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” 1 Jno. 1:5-7. Many blind sectarians wonder why God’s people don’t have any fellowship with them, and worship in with them. But in the above scripture we see that fellowship is not something we make, but something that really exists between God’s people, those who walk in the light.” But those who reject the light (truth) have neither fellowship with God nor his people. “Light hath no communion with darkness.” And from all such we are commanded to “separate” ourselves. Read 2 Cor. 6:14-18. Isa. 8:20. Jesus says, “Ye are the light of the world.” We become a light as we get filled with Christ and his truth. Again the Word says, “Let your light so shine before men,” etc. That is, let the life of Christ be manifest in your life, conversation, and daily walk. “That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world.” Phil. 2:15. But says one, Why don’t people see the light and come to it? Some are “blinded by the god of this world.” 2 Cor. 4:3, 4. 1 Jno. 2:9-11. Jno. 11:10. Others “love darkness rather than light,” yea, they stay away from the light “lest their wicked deeds be made manifest.” Jno. 3:19-27. “Their way is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.” But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. Prov. 4:18, 19. Yours in the light,

H. M. Riggle.

BE not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. Gal. 6:7. If you sow the truth, nourish and protect it, your reward when gathered will be the peacable fruits of righteousness, yea, life eternal. If unto the god of mammon you sow the seeds of sin in the field of wickedness, your harvest will be an eternal companionship with the archfiend, and his angels, in the regions of outer darkness.

Dear friend, were you ever converted from the power of sin to God? Did you ever feel the regenerating influence of the Holy Spirit? If so, at what rime did you lay aside the power for the form? Allowing the devil to calm your fears of hell, sear your conscience, cloaking you with , a garment of hypocrisy, settling you down upon the dregs of your carnal security, crying, Peace, when corruption fills your heart.

That night you attended theater, did you think Christ accompanied you? If so, it was but a sad mistake; for had he dwelt in your soul previous to this time, he took his departure the moment you decided to go where Jesus never visits, except to condemn the guilty conscience of formal professors like yourself.

While you were at the fair, viewing the races, even in one of the worst gambling dens on earth, did you imagine Jesus to be with you in the midst of that ungodly, foul-mouth throng? You would not permit your children to attend a holiness meeting, yet you took the whole family and to the circus you went, paid your money to see people act like fools. At the unseemly performances of the clown you shouted until becoming hoarse. But let some one meet you shouting, “Praise the Lord!” and your face turns red; you know not what to answer. You can yell for the devil, but to speak for Christ you are ashamed. You know you are not saved. God knows it, and all of his people know it. Yes, the devil knows it too; that is why he works so faithful to keep you bound in deception, being a curse to yourself, a dishonor to God, and a stumbling block to non proffessors around you.

You proffessed church members, you had a box supper the other night. From whence did you receive the idea? From Christ, or Satan? Oh you say you worked it up among yourselves. Very well, if you “worked it up,” it did not come down, hence it certainly emanated from the pit. The Word says, “Let all things be done decently and in order.” 1 Cor. 14:40. Was it in order for you, oh proffessed Christian, to buy a box and eat with another man’s wife? Was Christ with you, O woman, and you eating and joking with some-bodys else’s husband? Show us where Jesus ever set such an example. 1 Pet. 2:21, 22. This is a shame for non-proffessors, who under obligation of marriage ties are duty bound to bestow all of their respects upon she companion of life. How much more is it an abomination in the sight of God for proffessed Christians!

You were too tired to attend prayer meeting Thursday evening, but Friday you were rested insomuch that you could ride for miles to get to that grab-bag festival, gotten up by the devil for the benefit of your pastor, and he was there to receive the fruits of that sinful scheme. Your children can go by themselves to Sunday-school, but when the show comes around you must go along with them to see them safely home. Consistent, did I hear you say? Shame! You get angry at one who preaches purity of heart, and will not go to meeting, yet you take the famity and stroll off to that pillowslip social You feel more at home there than in a gospel meeting. ‘Tis not strange, for darkness loves its own, and light it hates. You never feel like testifying to the love of God, for you have not got it; you know not what it is. You can take an active part in political affairs, and talk long and loud, but you mumble your prayers (if you ever pray) as if you were afraid some one would hear them.

A hypocritical life is a task hard to carry out after all, is it not? Then why not lay aside formality and receive the yoke of Christ which is easy to bear? Many times you fail to get around in time for spiritual devotion, but you are always on hand when that foot and toe festival is announced. You don’t see why people get so fanatic as to always be praising God; it wearies you. Yet it seems to be in order for you to be present at 7:30 P. M. when that “kissing bee” is set in motion. If Jesus should appear, how would you feel? If you knew it was your last moment on earth, how would you spend it? Your last moment is soon coming; eternity is approaching. The angel of death is hovering over you. A few more steps and you leap over the border of time, plunging into the abyss of woe. God is not to blame for your wretched state; he warned you of the end of the hypocrite. Matt. 24:51. Ignorance will not excuse you, for you knew you were trying to act out something you did not possess. You gained the shadow, but forsook the substance.

Repent, confess, and forsake the power of sin; open your soul to heaven’s truth; imbibe the heavenly purity of divine grace, and walk in the statutes of life, without committing iniquity, and you shall live. Except your righteousness exceed that of the ungodly pharisees, which is nothing but an outward show, you shall never enter the peaceful presence of God. So get down before the throne of humility, wrestle with Jehovah until you are fully saved, and know that you have an experience pleasing in the eyes of our Creator, for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

W. A. Haynes.

TESTIMONY.

_____

Fenwick, Ont.

Dearly Beloved: Well it has been some time since I wrote my testimony. I can say I am praising God for a full and free salvation. And I also pray God that he may lead us as a family to do his whole will. Well dear ones, I have been going through quite a trial; I got my limb broken the first day of August, and have only been out of the house once, and then they drew my chair up to the door and drove the buggy up close and helped me in. God has taught me many precious lessons while lying in bed. I cannot put my foot to the floor yet; but I have found my Savior a help in every time of need. He is with me in the day time and in the midnight hours. Glory be to his precious name! And now I do ask all the saints to pray that I may have the use of my limb, and soon be so I can attend meeting. I want you to pray for us and the work in Canada. I ask your prayers in behalf of my family, that the unsaved ones may be saved, and that those that are may sink deep in God’s will. I remain your sister, sanctified and kept by the power of God,

Mrs. S. E. Birdsall.

SATANIC PRESUMPTION.

_____

Surely we are living in a time when men and women are presumptuous to the extreme. Indeed many have no trace of the fear of God before their eyes. What now? Several women in New York have taken it upon themselves to produce what they call the “Women’s Bible.” The first part of their abomination has come to daylight. And it is said, that “It seems little less than a handbook of infidelity. Moses is renounced as an imposter. The account of creation ridiculed. The leading writer, Mr. Stanton, has made the discovery that there is a “feminine element in the God-head.” That “the trinity is composed of the Father, Mother, and Son.” The contempt these women show toward the Old Bible, is evidently owing to the fact that it places woman in a subordinate relation to man. These great women wish to wear the pants; hence hate God’s order, and wickedly set themselves in array against his Book, and bring the curse of God upon their proud heads. What next in Babylon? It is reported in the papers that a rather peculiar customer came to the antichrist healer in Denver, — Schlatter. Reluctantly he grasped his hands, and a “convulsive shudder racked the healer’s frame.” Presently he violently pushed the man from him. When inquiry was made by a bystander, the healer said, “The man hath a devil.” A little girl asked, “Could you do nothing for the poor man”? To which he gave this answer, “No, my child, in these latter days devils are cast out by the power of Beelzebub, I have only the power of my father.”

This is a strange doctrine. The same commission of Christ that empowers to “heal the sick,” also says, “Cast out devils.” If that man did the former by the power of God, he would be able also to do the latter. At least he would not deny the power of God to cast out devils in these days. To men possessed with, and controlled with devils it is a consoling lie that no person can discern and cast out devils in the name of Jesus.

REPENT YE, AND BELIEVE THE GOSPEL.

Mark 1:15.

_____

In the above is a commandment made by Christ himself that few people of this day and generation are living up to. All the sect denominations of the universe “have a form of godliness, but deny the power thereof.” They declare that the healing power was dropped off when the apostles died. But Christ said, “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. Matt. 24:35. And jno. 15:7 declares “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” This is a part of the gospel that we are required to believe. And in the 8th verse he says, “Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit: so shall ye be my disciples.”

How can people claim to be the children of God, and do not the things he has commanded? The Word is plain to all those who are decidedly in earnest with God. “Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.” St. John 16:23, 24 The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ includes this: “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them. Matt. 7:12. The gospel says to the believer, “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: that every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honor; not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God: that no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified. For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.” 1 Thes. 4:3-7.

We also find it includes this: “Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. Verily, verily, I say unto you, the servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.” St. John 13:13-17.

How many professors there are who think themselves greater than the Savior of mankind; who ridicule the practice of feet washing and thus dishonor God. Some of them claim to fill the command to wash feet by taking care of the sick and helping the poor, but the gospel says. “These ye should have done, and not left the other undone.” And Jesus says, “If a man love me he will keep my words.” John 14:23. The 24th verse says, “He that Ioveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.” Now my dear friends, the duties of the truly born of God are very plain, and explicitly stated in the blessed word of God. As “it is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path,” let us take note of each letter and line contained therein, and may our lives correspond with the life of our blessed Redeemer in all things, that we may be called the children of the most high God.

We find that the text says, “Repent ye,” and “that all should come to repentance.” 2 Pet. 3:9. We find also that repentance comes before pardon; repentance comes before remission, so that without repentance there can be no remission. “John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.” Mark 1:4. “That repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.” Luke 24:47. “Repent ye, therefore, and be converted, that your sins might be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.” Acts 3:19. “And now God commandeth all men every where to repent.” Acts 17:30. And Luke 13:3 says, “Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.” Acts 20:21, “Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith to ward our Lord Jesus Christ.” So we see that without repentance there is no remission, and as we have sinned against God, it is necessary that we should repent to God and believe in the divinity of his Son Jesus Christ.

Thus, dear reader, follow out and obey the gospel, “For it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, the just shall live by faith.” Rom. 1:16, 17. The gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ takes the whole Word and that which is written which we did not understand has been fully explained “by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” Rom 5:5.

How did we get into this grace? We repented toward God and had faith in his Son, Jesus Christ, and God for Christ’s sake forgave us our sins. “Wherefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Being justified by faith we are standing uncondemned for our actual transgressions against God, and we receive this release “through our Lord Jesus Christ.” By whom [Jesus Christ] also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also; knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope: and hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” Rom. 5:1-5. After being justified by faith and taken into fellowship with Christ, I was informed that it was my reasonable service to present my body a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, and be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, (that I had received in justification, when I received peace with God. I had received the mind of Christ, and had been told to go on to perfection, and this I was now doing) that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable and perfect will of God. Rom. 12:1, 2. And now “Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is g0od. Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honor prefering one another: not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; distributing to the necessity of saints: given to hospitality.”

Dear Saints; We are here at Eldorado in the name of Jesus, and the Lord is with us. Praise his name! The Lord is blessing his truth, and numbers are confessing that they never heard it on this wise. We expect to stay here some time, and we would like for any of the little ones near by to attend and help us. Let all of the dear saints pray much for the work of the Lord here, and for us, that the Lord may give us much wisdom and meekness in presenting the word of God. Our address will be here for four weeks at least. Yours in the one body, saved and under the blood,

Dear Trumpet: We left Chicago, Nov. 18, for this place. Began meeting at Stringtown, Wednesday evening, the 20th. God was with us in declaring the truth, stretching forth his hand to heal in a number of cases. Thank God for a complete settling down in his will. To him be all the glory. We expect to leave here Thursday for Belgique, Mo. where we can be addressed until further notice. Am looking for Bro. R. L. Farquar to meet us here, and go with us, the Lord willing. Pray God, dear ones, for us that we may be kept where he can trust us with much more. Yours in the body,

A CALL FOR A TABERNACLE.

_____

Sweetser. Ind., Dec. 5.

Dear Saints of the Most High God: May the love of Christ continue to flow in your hearts. Amen. Beloved, I am coming to you in the name of Jesus with a request which has been burning on my heart for some time. I hope all who have the cause of Christ at heart, and are desirious to do something for the salvation of poor lost souls and spread of the gospel, will consider the following, viz. The brethren in Iowa who so kindly loaned us their tabernacle to hold meetings in these towns where we could get no house, want their tabernacle next spring to use in their own towns; therefore that leaves us without a tabernacle to hold meetings in those towns where the pure gospel has never been preached, and where we can not get a house to hold in. Now brethren, I feel God wants us to have a taberna-

Page 3

cle that we may reach those places. There are many towns in Indiana and Ohio, that are asking for the pure Word and can not get a place for meeting, and the only way we know to reach them is with a tabernacle. I am not able to get one of myself, but I am willing to give all my time in using it for Jesus. I can get a new one 34×56 and a small tent 10×14 for $100 00. Dear ones, you who read this do not cast it aside, but drop on your knees and ask him how much he would have you give for to get a tabernacle to reach lost souls. All who have anything to give please send to Bro. L. Hartung, Burkett, Ind. If there is not enough raised, all you send in will be refunded. This tabernacle will be used in Indiana and Ohio and where ever the Lard wills. I am your bloodwashed brother all sold out for Jesus,

McLallen Corners, Pa., Dec. 3.

Dearly Beloved Saints of God: It is some time since we have reported through the Trumpet. Our labors in the Dominion, were crowned with success. To God be all the glory. After the Jordan, Ont. tabernacle meeting, we went to Winona, Ont., where Bro. W. Smith, had procured a hall in readiness. The truth of the gospel went forth and found inroads to many honest hearts. The last night of the meeting, two came to the feet of Jesus, and the gentleman that owned the hall, came up and said, “There are no charges on the hall; only pray for me, I want to be saved.” Our next move was Fenwick, Ont. assembly meeting, which lasted eight days. This was a meeting long to be remembered, one of power and sinking down into the truth. As a mistake was made by letting a Disciple sect preacher in the hall, who held about four or five week’s revival, endeavoring to do away with the Spirit and hold to the letter alone. But praise God, the Spirit and the Word agree and run parallel. And the Word sent forth by the divine Spirit, removed the fogs of Discipleism, and the clear light of the Son of God shone in the midst of the assembly. Beloved ones mark them that make divisions, and receive them not into your house. We next opened in a M. E. meeting house, Chippawa, Ont. Found the same result. But prejudice began to remove and the house filled up night after night. God shook the town; hands went up for prayer. The Lord willing, we expect to return there in January. We are now in Erie Co., Pa. Those desiring to write us, address McLallen Corners. Yours in defence of the gospel,

J. A. and A. J. Dillon.

Dear Saints of the Living God: We are glad to again report perfect victory, in the name of Jesus. Hallelujah! Amen. Since our last report, we have held meetings as follows: Marble Yard; Fitchburg; Dry Ridge; Spruce school-house, and a few services at other places, where a few souls were saved. Most of the above places were new fields, where the evening light had never been heard of before. The congregations were large at each place, and the people seemed very anxious to hear the truth preached; but as we could only stay a short time at each place, but very few got saved. But we believe that in the near future there will be others saved, as some of them seemed so eager to hear the Word. May the Lord bless them.

The general meeting at Spruce was a very precious feast to our souls. Some souls were saved, a few were sanctified, and some were healed by the power of God; and the church was greatly strenthened in the faith of the gospel. To God be all the glory. Dear Bro’s H. F. Dunagan, and J. H. Long are elders in the church of the living God. And dear Bro’s Mat. Ford and George Kimbrel are deacons. The same were recognized, and ordained by the imposition of hands and prayer. May the Lord help them to walk worthy of the vocation whereunto they are called. Eph. 4:1-4.

With reluctance we took our departure from the dear saints at Spruce, Nov. 26th, for this place. We stopped two nights in Winchester, and enjoyed a very precious season from the presence of the Lord. Two came to the mercy seat. We also stopped two nights near Lexington, where we held three services, in Jesus’ name. Found a few dear souls in the Methodist sect claiming to be sanctified. But when the oneness of God’s church was shown them, some of them saw their lack of measuring to the standard. We also had the privilege of meeting with the dear saints in Louisville, and at Floyd’s Knobs, Ind. Had meeting one night at each place. Found a few whom I had met before on the forward move for God. And several others that have been saved since I was there, prospering in the Lord. May God ever bless and keep them faithful. We arrived here on the 2d of Dec. where we expect to remain as long as the Lord wills. Had meeting last night in a private house. We believe that the time has come when the work must be opened, and the church established in this city. And we earnestly request the prayers of all saints for us and the work here. Our address until further notice will be 943 West Cabbanne Court, St. Louis, Mo.

Yours contending for the faith of the gospel,

Dear Saints of God; We are still on the field of battle, working for the salvation of souls. Our last cent meeting was held at Emmet, Mo. Had a very blessed meeting. There were twelve professed either pardon or purity. Many others felt the need of the saving grace of God, who we trust may yet be saved. At the last service we partook of the ordinances of the church of God. The dear saints of Ash Grove (who called for the meeting) were much strengthened and refreshed. God bless them for all their kindness to us. We shall not soon forget the many precious seasons we have had together. We next went to Aurora, held a few days meeting. The Lord blessed, and there were two professions. No doubt more might have been accomplished had the meeting continued longer. Bro. and Sister Black who reside there have had a hard struggle battling as it were almost alone. God bless them. Soon after this meeting we went to Carthage, intending only to stay two nights, but finding that harvest time was at hand, we remained thirteen days with most blessed results. Oh how precious were those services. About forty souls claimed deliverance, many were both saved and sanctified. The people were anxious to hear the truth, and the congregations were always good, regardless of the weather, which a portion of the time was bad. Thirteen were buried with Christ by baptism. More will follow. As we gathered at the river on the last Sabbath, the crowd was great, estimated at 1000. It was a solemn scene, yet our hearts rejoiced to see those who had found the Savior, obeying this command. At night the ordinances of feet-washing and Lord’s supper were observed. Fifty-three taking part. Interest continued good until the last; souls coming to the altar and receiving the desire of their heart. Thus closed a most precious meeting. To God be all the glory. Bro. Slate and wife came in during the meeting; were glad to see their faces once more. Bro. Murphy and wife were also present a few days. Will further state that Bro’s Montgomery and Bradshaw were workers in the Emmet meeting! Yours in the holy war,

S.S. and C. A. Sunderland, and Drusilla Trent.

Dear Saints of God: I feel led to write my testimony. The Lord has done great things for me. Six years ago the Lord saved me and I united with the Evangelical sect, as I was taught to do and thought I was living right, although I was not satisfied with their belief. One year ago dear Bro’s Merritt and Sheldon came here and preached the blessed evening light, and I saw just where I was standing; and I called on God and he heard my prayer and delivered me from the enemy. I came out of Babylon and was buried with Christ in baptism although I had been baptized in the sect. God has a little church here and we have such precious seasons together. I have given all up to Jesus. He has healed me of La Grippe when I was very sick, and I have not used one drop of medicine in any way since I was saved. To God be all the glory. My earnest prayer to God is to keep me humble, ready and willing to do any thing for him. Your sister in the one body, saved and sanctified for the Master’s use,

Dear Saints of God: I am so thankful to God that he has showed me the real truth as it is in his Word. Bro. Byers was here to hold meetings last summer and it benefited me so much. I was also healed of afflictions that had troubled me constantly for twelve years. Glory to Jesus! He is the best doctor I ever went to. I was born and baptized into God’s church as they teach, but I really did believe that with all my heart although I knew that I did not stay by God, but wandered away in sin and worldliness and I had to repent and come to Jesus for forgiveness and get cleansed in his precious blood. And I know now, that that is the only way to be born again; it is as plain to me now as day. Praise the Lord! And I am going to follow him where he directs, if I shall have every beloved friend on earth to turn against me, as I know most of them will. But Jesus can satisfy me; he is the best friend, and he repays me many fold back what I have lost. Your sister saved and kept by Jesus’ power.

Dear Saints of God: I am saved, sanctified and kept by the power of God. I feel led to tell what the good Lord has done, in the healing of my body. I was taken sick the twenty-ninth day of last May and was out of my head, not knowing any thing. The children sent for a doctor. I lay for sixteen weeks very bad, then I got a little better; then I got worse and suffered terribly, until in October I was hauled forty miles on a bed, and grew worse. Sent for a doctor but still got worse. October thirty-first in the morning at seven o’clock I took the last dose of doctor’s medicine. I told my family if I would die, I would die in the hands of the Lord without any medicine in my stomach. I suffered terribly all day; in the evening about five o’clock the Lord let me down so low that they all thought I was dying. I got perfectly cold; I lay that way for three hours. While in that way God showed me I should send for the elders of the church, according to the Word. I did so, and by the help and mercy of God I was healed. It may seem strange, but all things are possible with God. So I give God all the glory. From your saved and sanctified sister in Christ,

Dear Saints: I desire to testify to the saving, keeping and healing power of Jesus. I have been a reader of the Trumpet since last March and it has been such a spiritual blessing to me. The first one in connection with tracts and “Divine Healing of Soul and Body,” was handed me by a dear sister. I was in a very delicate state of health, rapidly going into consumption. I was seriously thinking of my little babe which would have to be reared by an infidel father. But God gave me a willing heart to receive the truth when presented to me, and before I had read the “Divine Healing” through, I gave up medicine and trusted my case to the Lord, and praise his holy name, he healed me. I began to consecrate for “sanctification,” of which I was very ignorant. And I praise the Lord for being so patient with me and leading me out of sectism into the beautiful light of the pure gospel, notwithstanding my trials come many and hard on that account. I do praise the Lord for the needed lessons taught in the TRUMPET. Pray for me that I may keep low down at the feet of Jesus, and pray for my wicked husband.

Dear Saints: I feel that it will be to the glory of God for me to write j my testimony. I am praising the Lord this morning for full salvation that keeps me from all sin. I too can testify to the wonderful healing power of our blessed Jesus. I was healed of a stomach disease that I had suffered with for ten years. The doctors had tried to cure me and failed. I was left without hope. I have always believed that the Lord could heal his children of all their diseases, just as much as I believe he could forgive their sins. But dear ones, I had not lived up to all the light God had given me, when first I found him precious to my soul, I felt so unworthy that I feared to ask any favors of my loving Savior. At last I did get courage enough to send for a sister to come and pray for me. She sent for Sister Mary and Brother George Cole, who at the time were holding meeting at Geneva, four miles east. Praise the Lord, it was through the prayers of those three beloved children of God that I was so wonderfully blessed. Pray for me that I may ever be kept faithful and true to God. Dear Trumpet Readers: I believe it to be to the glory of God to write my testimony. After reading Bro. J Cole’s and sister Jennie C. Rutty’s pieces in the Trumpet of Nov. 14, my soul was stirred in me. And as I was weeping as though my heart would break and praying, God showed me I was to make spiritual advancement. And as I decided to do so I began to feel better and while singing the chorus over and over, “Halleluiah for the cleansing,” I was made to shout for joy; and as I never was shouting happy before, the devil tried to make me believe I was going to die. But blessed be God’s holy name, I am here yet and enjoying a salvation that satisfies every longing in my soul. O praise his dear name! He is to us even more than we ask or think. Oh dear ones, take courage and keep on praying the prayer of faith as I did, and God will answer prayer in your case. How thankful we are for the TRUMPET; it seems as though we could not do without it; it seems to me it is getting better every week. Please pray for me that the Lord keep me humble, and use me to his glory. From your sister in Christ,

Lucy Thayer.

DIVINE HEALING.

__________

Believe For Healing.

_____

By E. E. Byrum.

IT does not take any more faith for the healing of the body than it does to believe for salvation. When we read the word of God and find what he has promised on that line, and remember that his words are true, it need not be any more difficult to obtain healing than to obtain salvation. The promises of healing are to the children of God, and in order to have the work done there must be implicit faith in his word; and just as soon as the point is reached where the case is placed fully into the hands of the Lord, and a petition sent up for the removal of the disease without doubt or waver, then God sends the healing power. If one is capable of doing this alone, there is a very precious promise. Jno. 15:7. If there is some one else to be agreed, another promise is to be found in Matt. 18:19. Where our own prayers do not seem to grasp the promise and there are elders near, the promise is found in James 5:14. 15.

As to being agreed for the healing according to Mat. 18:19, it is not always necessary for the two parties to be together. It is possible for them to be perfecty agreed and yet be a thousand miles or more apart and the healing be accomplished. We have known of hundreds of cases of healing where the requests for prayers have been sent great distances and the healing instantly done. Paul used to send handkerchiefs, aprons, etc., and people were healed of their diseases, and evil spirits cast out. Acts 18:12. God manifests his power in a similar manner in these days. Where a person who needs healing will take any promises found in the Word on that line and believe them without a doubt, the work will be done. Mark 11:23, 24.

__________

Rheumatism of twelve years, and how I was Healed.

_____

Dear Saints: I had always been taught that it was God’s will for us to suffer and we must bear it for his sake, and I quit trying to do any thing for myself and tried to be patient and bear it. All medicines had failed; I had employed the best physicians in Fresno, D’rs Rowel, Hayden and Long, from whom I received relief through opiates, but could not be cured? I had suffered so long that I often prayed the Lord to take me home. Again, when in such agonies I would have taken my life had it not been for the awful future of such a deed. I felt I was of no use to any one and life was a burden. Last May I heard of Bro. Byers’ meetings in this city and was persuaded to go to them. I had no faith in divine healing, but thought I would go any way. That day I saw a crippled lady marvelously healed. She had used crutches for four years, and I saw her after prayer and laying on of hands, rise and walk without human assistance, and has been able to do so ever since. This healing caused much rejoicing; men and women wept for joy. Instantly God showed me that this healing was also for me. The next day I was also prayed for. I had muscular rheumatism for twelve years and knew not what it was to be without pain two days at a time. My left arm for six months before being healed, was perfectly helpless when lying down; I also had catarrh in my head, also dyspepsia. My faith grasped the promises for only one disease at a time, and consequently I was prayed for three different times, but praise God I was healed. I cannot express the joy that filled my heart. As I would wake up at night and praise God to think I could turn over in bed, lie as I wished, walk where, when, and as far as I pleased, my heart was overwhelmed. Often since then I have walked five miles in a day. I have been to many places and meetings since and testified to my healing, hoping to help others to the dear Savior I have found for soul and body; to God be all the glory. Yours in Christ,

Anna F. Quinn.

Do not Abuse God’s Ordinances.

_____

1 Cor. 11:2

_____

HOW blessed to follow the Lord in all the sacred ordinances and realize the fullness of the promise, “If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.” God’s holy people keep all his ordinances, not simply because they are commanded to do so, but because they deem it their glorious privilege. They do it in remembrance of Him, the one they love so dearly. To such it is not a galding yoke, as it may seem to some, but having the Spirit of the Master, they love to follow in his steps. It is our duty to not only observe and do all the ordinances, but to keep them sacred and holy, and not allow them to become a custom, or the force of habit.

Let them ever remain as sacred ordinances, and not as a custom. If we are not careful, we will form a habit of observing some of the ordinances, and thereby abuse the same. In regard to the ordinance of the Lord’s supper (the bread and wine) Jesus says, “As oft as ye do it, ye do it in remembrance of me.” But he does not tell us how often to observe it, only as oft as ye do it. But there are those who make a form of this ordinance and practice the form every Lord’s day, and even censure those who do not as they do. Such know but little of the real virtue of the ordinance, and by their legalistic form unhallow and abuse the ordinance.

Again, in the lifting up of hands in the sanctuary. Some make this a form and it becomes a habit, and while they lift their hands in prayer and song, their hearts are far from him. When we lift our hands in song or prayer, our hearts, mind and soul should go up in worship to God.

Again, while we are commanded to greet one another with a holy kiss, we are not commanded to do so as often as we come in contact with each other. I am persuaded that this ordinance is sadly abused. Many have formed a habit of kissing every time they meet, and they feel slighted and think you cool if you do not join with them in the same excess of kissing. They practice kissing when they go into the meeting and when they part; when they meet on the street or wherever they come together, no difference where, or under what circumstances, they practice kissing With such, many times, it is not true love that prompts the greeting, but simply habit. They kiss because they think they must, to prove that they are saints indeed. And so many times whether you feel like it or not, you are forced to be kissed, and many times the cause of God suffers reproach, because of God’s people not using sanctified wisdom on this line. Instead of men being convicted by our practice of this sacred ordinance, many are disgusted with so much promiscuous kissing.

A holy kiss must come from a truthful heart and unfeigned lips. But many times people kiss with their lips when their hearts are far from him. Their kiss is an outward show, an empty fraud. They are forced by habit or custom to kiss, when in their hearts, the outward act is repulsive to them. Such is not a holy kiss, but is an abuse of the ordinance. Again, there are those who are the victims of chronic disease, such as catarrh, consumption, dyspepsia, diseases of the stomach, lungs, throat and teeth. To such it is a duty to refrain from an unnecessary amount of kissing, for many times such have a very offensive breath, and in many cases such diseases are contagious. We are informed by the best physicians that promiscuous kissing is a very pernicious habit, and reason teaches us that when anything is repulsive to a child of God, it cannot be holy. No doubt some of you have had the experience of having a kiss forced upon you when it nearly took your breath. Now, there be no virtue in such a kiss, unless it is in suffering for Jesus’ sake, and submitting one to another. There are some who will kiss and be kissed, no matter how repulsive their constant kissing may be. But we who have the true understanding of this ordinance, ought to set a better example.

Let kissing remain a sacred ordinance, as God intended it to be. But whenever it becomes a custom, it can no longer remain an ordinance, for that which is a custom or habit, cannot be termed an ordinance. Remember, I do not wish to repeal the divine ordinance of greeting with a holy kiss, but only desire that it may remain a holy ordinance, and not become a perverted custom. Do not make it a form, destitute of real virtue. Do not get into the habit of kissing every time you meet, but rather refrain, and practice it to the glory of God, and follow consistency, in the perfect love and fellowship of Jesus Christ.

TESTIMONIES.

“Thy Testimonies are Wonderful.” – Psa. 119:129.

__________

West Middleburg, Ohio.

I am praising God this morning for a full and free salvation. Glory to his name for his keeping power and his sustaining grace! He keeps me so sweetly all the time. To me he is the satisfying portion. May God in his goodness bless all his dear saints everywhere. My soul says praise the Lord, who supplieth all my needs according to his riches in glory. Who healeth all our sickness and sweepeth away our diseases, and taketh our infirmities upon himself. Pray for me.

Dear Saints: I am praising God for his keeping power. I have sweet peace and joy in my soul. I am so glad the dear Lord is so kind to his children, I am determined to do m7 Master’s will. Others can serve whom they will; I must serve God, let life be long or short. I never have had any desire to turn back. I want to beg every saint of God to help me to pray for the work in Miss, for I know of places here that are in an awful condition. Papa has been taking the Trumpet three or four years. It is a welcome visitor with me; it is a real feast to my soul to read the blessed testimonies, and the work at the Open Door Mission. I would be glad to help them if I had the means, but as I can not help in that way I can pray for them that God will bless them and give them the needed grace. I want to ask an interest in all your prayers. Your humble sister, saved,

Elnorah Johnson.

Dear Saints of God: I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony once more, to tell of his wonderful goodness to me. Praise his holy name! Truly he keeps his soul in peace, whose mind is stayed on him. God has been teaching me precious lessons; one I wish to impart to mothers in Israel, in my feeble way. About a year ago I prayed in the Spirit, asking that I might sink in the real depth of humility, and for an increase of faith. Father soon permitted me to pass through a very severe trial. It seemed I could not bear it; praying dear Lord if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless not my will, but thine be done. The Lord would comfort my heart; until one day I took my care and all to him, laid it down at Jesus’ feet, and prayed that his strength might be made perfect in weakness; that I would trust Jesus through all. My soul doth magnify the Lord; for he has done for me abundantly above that I am able to ask or think.

Dear ones in the Lord, do not be afraid to trust God, who has given us so many precious promises, and promised to supply all pur needs according to his riches in glory through Christ Jesus. We must live a perfect obedient life before him, that we may have a perfect trust and faith that our heavenly Father will never leave us nor forsake us. I have proved the Lord and found him true when I said, now Lord I have trusted you, fulfill thy promises to me, and he did so wonderfully. Father understood what trials I needed to sink me in humility and to increase my faith. I do praise him, knowing that all things work together for good to them that love the Lord, to those who are called according to his purpose. Pray for me that I may always keep humble and obedient unto the Lord. Your sister saved and sanctified,

Mary Heldenbrand.

With a prayer to God that it may help some poor soul who is trying to live as I did, I will give a part of my experience. For three years I lived a miserable kind of half-way Christian life, sinning and repenting, falling and getting up again with not enough of the love of God to keep me steadfast in the faith. I was now dabbling in sin, then returning to the Lord for forgiveness. The pulpit did not tell me what it meant to repent of sin. They did not tell me of my privileges in Christ; they did not tell me God was able and willing to not only forgive but to keep me from sin, and that I must let him do it or I would never be saved.

In August last God in mercy led me to the Open Door Mission, Chicago, where I heard the truth as it is in Jesus. Then I began to see what a sinner I was; I got deeply concerned about my soul; my sins became almost unbearable. There was one sin I had committed which I was not willing to make right. I would not confess I was wrong; I went to Bro. Tufts at the mission, and he showed me what he Lord would have me do. And praise his holy name, when I came to him and asked forgiveness and promised to make right the wrong I had done, he took away the burden of sin and gave me what I was not looking for, that joy and peace which passeth all understanding. The Lord has been leading me since and through the revelation of his word he has shown me the sin of sectism. It was hard to believe for one who never knew anything but Methodism, but the more of Christ I got the less room I had for it. Today finds me saved, sanctified, and wholly consecrated to the service of the Lord. A little company of us who are in the evening light are holding meetings three times a week; and intend, when the Lord wills, to open a mission here. Pray for us: we are few in number, but the Lord is with us to lead us to victory. God bless the Open Door Mission, Chicago; it has saved my soul for the Lord. I am your brother in Christ,

C. M. Noxon.
