Trust and obey.

_____

When we walk with the Lord,
In the light of his word,
What a glory he sheds
On our way.
While we do his good will,
He abides with us still,
And with all who wall
Trust and obey.

Cho. – Trust and obey,
For there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus,
But to trust and obey.

Not a shadow can rise,
Not a cloud in the skies,
But his smiles quickly
Drive them away.
Not a doubt nor a fear,
Not a sigh nor a tear.
Can abide while we
Trust and obey.

Not a burden we bear,
Not a sorrow we share,
But our toil he doth
Richly repay.
Not a grief nor a loss,
Not a frown nor a cross,
But is blessed if we
Trust and obey.

But we never can prove,
The delight of his love,
Until all on the altar
We lay.
For the favor he shows,
And the joy he bestows
One for all who will
Trust and obey

Then in fellowship sweet,
We will sit at his feet,
Or walk by his side
In the way,
What he says we will do,
Where he leads we will go,
Never fear, only
Trust and obey.

A RESTING PLACE.

_____

THE children of God who are scattered over the hills and mountains by their false shepherds, who have driven them from their home by their false teachings and lying tongues, are commencing to realize the perilous times they are living in, and are searching for a resting place; for as they look upon the wickedness of the world they can see that we are living in the last days. Now, dear ones, you will read in Mic. 4:1, 2; “But in the last days it shall come to pass that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills, and people shall flow unto it; and many nations shall come and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths; for the law shall go forth of Zion; and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.” Some may say we have never heard this scripture in our church. Is this the resting place we are searching for? What is this Zion? Thus saith the Lord, “But ye are come unto mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the first born, which are written in heaven.” Heb. 12:22, 23. So you see, dear ones, every soul that is dead in trespasses and sins, and who repents and is redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ is born again, and enters into Zion, the church of the firstborn. But before they are established, or understand the privilege a child of God has, they are taken in hand by the false prophets and blind teachers and led away from Zion, and taken into Babylon, the babel of confusion, the hills that the mountain of the Lord is exalted above.

Well, some say, What is Babylon? We read in Rev. 17:3-5, “So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness; and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet colored beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns; and the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet color and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: and upon her forehead was a name written, Mystery, Babylon the great, the mother of harlots and abominations of the earth.” And by the word of God we know this woman represents the Roman Catholic church, and that she was a mother and had daughters, which represents the sects and divisions of to day; for the word says she was the mother of harlots, and they have partaken of the sins of the mother, and had daughters; and so on until they have become an abomination on the earth. And this is the confusion a child of God is led into by the false shepherds, who belong to the daughters of the mother of harlots, and who seek to rob you of your first love. Cast off the straps and bands. Come out of the barren wilderness, and escape to Zion; for you will find plenty of spiritual food in Zion; for thus saith the Lord: “Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Wherefore do ye spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which satisfieth not? Hearken dilligently unto me, and eat that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.” Isa. 55:1, 2, “And ye shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God that hath dealt wondrously with you; and my people shall never be ashamed.” Joel. 2:26. So, dear ones, you can never grow lean in Zion no famine in your soul for the word of God.

But, dear ones, flee from that babylonish desert and come to the mountain of the Lord, for thus saith the Lord: ‘‘And in this mountain shall the Lord of hosts make unto all people a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined.” Isa. 25:6. “It ye be willing and obedient ye shall eat the good of the land; but if ye refuse and rebel ye shall be devoured with the sword; for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.” Isa. 1:19, 20. So you see, dear ones, all the good things are for the willing and obedient; for the Lord says, “Blessed are they which hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.” Mat 5:6. Praise the Lord! His children shall be filled. No more running from hill to hill for food and freedom; for thus saith the Lord, “If the Son, therefore, shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” Jno. 8:36. For where the Lord is, there is freedom; it is a freedom for all God’s children, for are they not called the saints of the Most High? for thus saith the Lord: “But the saints of the Most High shall take the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, even forever and ever.” Dan. 7:18. Now, you dear children that are tied up in Babylon, are you willing to throw off the chains of slavery and declare your freedom in Christ Jesus and obey the voice of Father who has sent out his mighty watchmen, who stand upon the walls and cry aloud, “Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and a hold of every foul spirit, and the cage of every unclean and hateful bird.” Rev. 18:2. These are the inhabitants of Babylon. Now, dear ones, are you going to be tied up with them, or will you make your escape before it is too late.

“And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye receive not of her plagues.” Rev. 18:4.

As we look back upon the hateful bird of prey, we can sing with David, “Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart.” Psa. 73:1. “And it was not until I went into the sanctuary of God, then understood I their end.” For we can see, dear Father, how they take thy holy name in vain, and carry on their ungodliness and wickedness under the cloak of religion. Do they meet together to worship God in the Spirit? No, no: they pleach that they cannot live free from sip, and that is true, for they cannot; for the Lord does not dwell with them; for he dwells in Zion, and not in Babylon; for truly she is become a vanity fair, living a double life.

In one church in Liverpool they had what they call a rummay sale in the school room, by paying a small sum was admitted in to the sale. On first going in a board attracted your attention, on which was written, “This way to the dancing. Three pence each,” and this what they call the house of God.

And at another church a concert was given which was opened by the Vicar arid his choir coming on the stage, dressed up in costume singing a comic song. We could go on writing of many such things. Truly, truly, Babylon is fallen and become the habitation of devils, and gone into utter darkness. For thus saith the Lord, “And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast, and his kingdom was full of darkness, and they gnawed their tongues for pain,” Rev. 16:10. Now, dear children of God who are in the cage of unclean and hateful birds, make your escape from the chains of darkness, and flee to the light in Zion, “Giving thanks unto the Father, who hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light, who hath delivered us from the powers of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.” Col. 1:12,13.

“This then is the message which we have heard of him and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” 1 Jno. 1:5. And now that you have escaped from out of the darkness of Babylon into the light of Zion you receive a commission; for thus saith the Lord: “Ye are the light of the world; a city that is set on a hill cannot be hid; neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but on a candle stick; and it giveth light to all that are in the house.” “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Mat. 5:14—16

“Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Savior, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever. Amen. Jude 24:25.

__________

Spiritual Discernment.

_____

IT is understood by every enlightened child of God, that we are living, not only in the last days, but that the enemy of souls in his last struggles is using ways and means to hinder God’s work, that are often so cunningly planned as to be past finding out (at the proper time), except by the true spirit of discernment. Therefore the time has now come when it is really necessary for every child of God to possess this gift, especially those who are traveling from place to place, continually being forced to meet strange faces, and often strange spirits in disguise.

It is God’s will that his saints should possess the spirit of discernment. We find a prophecy concerning; it in Mal. 3:18, which reads thus: “Then shall ye return and discern between the righteous and the wicked; between him that serveth God, and him that serveth him not.” When an unclean spirit succeeds in prejudicing one that is lacking on this point, God’s work is hindered; confusion is the result, and the enemy rejoices; although only for a time, that time, though short, is too precious to waste. May God help every child of his to make spiritual discernment a special matter of prayer, that we may have power to detect fraud at sight, or before the enemy gets a foothold in our midst, with power to overthrow or hinder the weak ones that are not established in the truth as it shines form in the blessed evening light.

Christian Science.

_____

A Sent so-called, dissected by the Sword of the Spirit.

IN A. D. 31 Jesus Christ called unto him his twelve disciples and gave them power over unclean spirits to cast them out, and to heal all manner of diseases. Mat. 10. In A. D. 32 He said, “Upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matt. 16. In A. D. 33, just before he ascended to his Father he said, These signs shall follow them that believe: In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they [the sick] shall recover.” Mark 16. “And, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” Mat. 28.

In the Acts of the apostles are recorded many wonderful fulfillments of the Savior’s promise: healing the sick and raising the dead, in answer to their prayers during a period extending from A. D. 33 to A. D. 62.

In A. D. 59 Paul said, “And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings.” 1 Cor. 12.

The church that Jesus built is called in the Bible, “The church of God.” 1 Cor. I. “The church of the living God.” 1 Tim. 3. In other words, The congregation of the living God.” She is composed of holy men and women only. Isa. 60:21. And God emphatically declares that there shall in nowise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither worketh abomination or maketh a lie. Rev. 21.

From the time the church was first established, and even after she had drifted into the dark wilderness of Roman Catholicism, which occurred toward the close of the third century, and after she had emerged from thence and entered into the cloudy wilderness of Protestantism in A. D. 1530 (See Rev. 12 for both accounts) occasionally a holy man or woman possessed the “gifts of healing,” which “God hath set in the church;” for Jesus said, “Lo, I am with you always.” During the last century about 1740, the Wesleys healed the sick through the prayer of faith and the laying on of hands.

And now comes Mrs. Mary Baker G. Eddy and says, “In 1866 I discovered metaphysical healing and named it Christian Science.” From the foregoing statement we must conclude that Christian Science is not God’s church, because the prophet says of God’s church: “Thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the Lord shall name.” Isa. 62. I have found in perusing Mrs. Eddy’s works that there is a vast difference between her church and God’s church, and, dear reader, if you will follow me to the end of this little “expose” you will never be caught in the Christian Science soul-trap, if you obey the word of God. The writer hereof does not object to her having discovered something, but to name it “Christian” while every last prop supporting its platform is anti-christ is what he objects to.

Who is a Christian?

ANSWER. “The disciples were first called Christians at Antioch.” Acts 11.

What is a disciple?

ANSWER. A disciple is one who adheres to the doctrine of another. A Christian is a real disciple of Christ, of one who adheres strictly to his doctrine. “For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister and mother.” Mat. 12. God’s people or church “follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth.” Rev. 14. In other words, they keep all his commandments. “Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.” John 15.

Metaphysics is the science of mind.

Metaphysical, existing only in thought.

Metaphysical healing then is all in your mind.

The god of the Christian Scientist is spelled M-I-N-D.

Mrs. Eddy says, “God is mind, he is Divine Principle, not person.” “From Science I learn that mind is omnipotence, omnipresence, omniscience — all power, all presence, all science. There is but one God. The spiritual he, she and it are mind and mind’s ideas.”

If I can prove by the word of God — which is the Bible, — that the God of the Bible is a personal God, “Christian Science” is overthrown, and those who believe the Bible will shun Mrs. Eddy’s discovery,” and my object shall have been accomplished.

First of all, God is an intelligent person and Says, Come now, and let us reason together: * * * though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. If ye be willing and obedient ye shall eat of the good of the land. But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword, for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it. Isa. 1.

There went up smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured. 2 Sam. 22. For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers; but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. 1 Pet. 3.

Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear. But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. Isa. 59. Darkness was under his feet. 2 Sam. 22. I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and will trample them in my fury. Isa. 63. O poor sinner, flee the wrath to come. Forsake, 0 forsake your thirty-year-old mind-god, and seek a refuge from every storm, in “the Lord God, who is God of gods and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty God, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward” (Deut. 10,) and you will find that the Lord is very pitiful and of tender mercy. Isa. 5. Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that feareth him, for he knoweth our frame and remembereth that we are dust. Psa. 103. My thoughts are not your thoughts.” Isa. 55. I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen. Ex. 33. I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool.” Dan. 7. He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not be correct? he that teacheth man knowledge, shall not he know? Psa. 94.

Who after reading the above scripture will say, “God is mind, he is a divine principle, not person”? Who can read Exodus 19th and 20th chapters and say “God is not person?” The Israelites well knew that some one more real and terrible than Mrs. Eddy’s mind-delusion, was on Mount Sinai. They heard the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words. “And all the people saw the thunderings and the lightnings and the noise of a trumpet, and the mountain smoking. * * * And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear, but let not God speak with us lest we die.” Ex. 20. “And the Lord came down upon Mount Sinai, on top of the mount, and the Lord called Moses up to the top of the mount: and Moses went up. Ex. 19. “And so terrrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake.”

O mind! “Hast thou an arm like God? Or canst thou, thunder with a voice like him?” Job. 40.

Mrs. Eddy says, “To day, though able to teach others, I find myself still a willing disciple at the heavenly gate, waiting for the mind of Christ to fully possess me.” Thus admitting that she is none of his. Paul says, But we have the mind of Christ.” 1 Cor. 2. “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” Phil. 2. What is necessary for all Christian scientists and all other sinners to do is to “Repent and believe the gospel.” The disciples had done this, and Jesus said unto them, “all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known to you.’ Jno. 15. “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth.” Jno. 16.

I will now prove that the discoverer and god-mother of the so-christened “Christian Science” is deluded of the devil (whose existence she denies), and is being used by Satan, the original founder and inventor of this anti-christ, anti-bible Pseudonym to deceive souls, by turning and twisting, subverting and wresting, adding to, and taking from, detracting, and misrepresenting the word of God

Ruth Daugherty,

Sharpsville, Ind.

THERE is so much need of some true minister of God to come here and hold a meeting.

Minnie V. Wrightman.

Cisco, Livingston Co., Mo.

WE would like to have Bro. Martz and Co., or who else the Lord will send to come here and preach God’s pure gospel. Address Bro. Edward Hammer, or

David Wire,

Du Bois, Pa.

Dear Brethren in Christ: I have written at different times for some of the Lord’s holy ministers to come out here in this part of the country and preach the pure gospel, for I do not believe we ever heard it preached. We read the Trumpet and like its doctrine, but it seems like we need more light. We want to hear the evening light preached, and want to understand the way of the Lord more perfectly. We are beginning to see the confusion and blindness of sectism round about us. And we think according to God’s word that it is wrong; but how are we going to get out of it? Now we want some of God’s holy ones that are in the true light, to come here and lead us into the light.

Fallsburg, Ky.

Answer to Question.

In the Biblical Trace, page 33, I find the statement that the fourth beast, or Roman empire, reigned from A. D. 31 to A. D. 476; and on the next page (34) that this kingdom reached the summit of its glory about the time of Christ’s birth. I would like for you to explain through the Trumpet how it could reach its summit before it began to reign.

C. W. Harrison.

Payton, Colo.

In answer to the above would say: The table on page 33 of Biblical Trace of the Church is not intended to show the rise and fall of those four great monarchies. We have only made use of the historian’s attempt to divide the universality of political reign between those four beasts. We do not wish to be understood to say that the Roman empire arose in A. D. 31; but that from that date historians consider it universal. Nor do we wish to say that it was not an absolute monarchy until A. D. 31. Augustus Caesar is said to be the most absolute monarch that ever ruled the Roman empire. It was he who swayed the scepter at the very time of Christ’s birth. Put the reader will bear in mind that absoluteness is one thing, and universality is another. While Caesar was the most absolute, that is, had the fewest constitutional checks of all the Roman monarchs he did not sway the scepter over as large a territory as some of his successors. As we were dealing with the universality of the Roman empire, we made use of the date from which it is considered universal.

The table in B. T. of C. might be changed as follows:

  1. Babylonian Empire rose B. C. 2300; became universal B. C. 690, and fell B. C. 538.
  2. Medo-Persian Empire rose B C. 740; became universal B. C. 538, and fell B. C. 286.
  3. Grecian Empire rose B. C. 776; became universal B. C. 331, and fell B. C. 146.
  4. Roman Empire rose B. C. 754; became universal A. D. 31, and fell A. D. 476.

One would conclude from the table in Biblical Trace that the Grecian Empire reigned until A. D. 31; that is a mistake, as the above table will show. Yours, and Christ’s,

Wm. G. Schell.

The New Jerusalem,

-OR-

New Heavens and Earth.

(Continued from last issue.)

__________

WHAT IS AFFIRMED OF THE NEW JERUSALEM AND THE NEW HEAVENS AND EARTH IS ALL FULFILLED IN GOD’S CHURCH.

1ST. It came down from God out of heaven. So is God’s church an heavenly institution, not an earth-born association. But all her elements are of heavenly origin. In this very thing is the chief distinction between God’s church und men’s organisms, between the body of Christ and the sects that men have created.

2D. Immediately after her descent, “I heard a great voice out of heaven, saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them and be their God.” This was the fulfillment of the promise of Christ. Jno. 14:23. It came to pass on the day of pentecost. That was the most marked speech of the descent of the new Jerusalem to earth.

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.” Rev. 21:4. This takes place when the pardon of all sins is realized in Christ. Then he gives the oil of gladness for the spirit of heaviness, and beauty for ashes.” “And there shall be no more death.’ In the light of God’s word we find this is already true in the “church of the living God.” One text is sufficient to prove it. “Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began; but is now made manifest by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.” 2 Tim. 1:9, 10.

To abolish is to wipe out and destroy. If therefore, the inspired apostle testifies truthfully that Christ has already abolished death, from his saints, then it is true that there is “no more death” in the church, or city of his habitation. The passage in Revelation, is no stronger than that of Paul to Timothy. But both must be received in their New Testament application and modification.

“Neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” Rev. 21:4.

A professor of religion who lives a wretched sinning and repenting life, and is daily pained at his sinful thoughts and deeds, and who blindly thinks there is nothing better for him in this life, can only hope for the fulfillment of the above in some future state. But he who has reached the plain of Bible salvation, where we “glory in tribulations,” “count all things joy,” and “rejoice evermore,” will readily recognize, in the above strong language, the perfect triumphs, and exceeding great joy and everlasting peace we now enjoy in the fulness of Christ. The words are to be thus spiritually applied.

“And he that sat upon the throne said. Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, write: for these words are true and faithful.” Ver. 5. This language surely refers back to both the new Jerusalem verse 2, and to the new heavens and new earth, Ver. 1. He makes all things new. Where shall we look for the fulfillment of this announcement? Let the scripture explain itself. “Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away: behold, all things are become new. And all things are of God.” 2 Cor. 5:17, 18. Who cannot see the concurrence of these scriptures. “Behold, I make all things new,” says he that sitteth on the throne; that is Christ, and it is in this time. “For he must reign till he hath put all enemies under his feet.” 1 Cor 15:25. The last enemy, death, shall be put down by the resurrection of all the dead in the last day, when Christ will deliver up the kingdom to the Father. So the making of all things new being associated with the new heavens and the new earth, and with the new Jerusalem, and also with the reign of Christ, which will terminate with his coming, it follows, that these things are now present, under the reign of Christ, and in the gospel dispensation. “Behold, I make all things new,” saith he that sitteth upon the throne. “Behold all things are become new” unto him who is in Christ Jesus. So the new heavens and the new earth are the new dispensation, new covenant, new heart, new spirit, new life, new joy, new church, new name, new hope, and entirely new man, we have in Christ Jesus. For old things have passed away. The old law, old covenant, old priesthood, old temple and old life of sin have all passed away. And a second Adam stands at the head of a new creation. How often we have heard men testify that salvation in their soul, caused all around to glow with a new and heavenly beauty, and gilded the clouds with a sublime glory in which they never before shone. Thus being made new ourselves, the heavens and the earth seemed new: “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision, but a NEW CREATION.” Gal. 6:15, as rendered by nearly all translations. Salvation is a new creation, and in Christ, behold all things have become new.

But let us continue to follow tie description of the new and holy Jerusalem. “Having the glory of God, and her light was like unto a stone, most precious, * * * clear as crystal.” Rev. 21:11. This glory is just what God’s church has in possession, it having been given her by her Lord and Savior. Jno. 17:22. Her light clear as crystal, is her holiness, her purity. “And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. Verse 23. Out of Zion the perfection of beauty God hath shined.” God and the Lamb shine out of his church.

“And had a wall great and high.” Ver. 12. This also agrees with God’s church. Her wall is salvation, great and high. Isa. 26:1.

The three gates on each side agree with this idea, that men and women, from all nations and in all conditions of life, have direct access into the church right from their several standpoints.

“And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.” Rev. 21:14.

This is also exactly true of the church of God. When presented under the figure of a building, she is “built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets.” Eph. 2:20. This fact that the apostles all occupy a fundamental place in the church of God, is which Christ alludes to in Mat. 10:18. It is true of Peter because tree of all the twelve. In the next verse the Savior proceeds to say, “And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven,” and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, etc. This same authority in dealing with souls is vouchsafed to all the ministers of the Lamb. See Mat. 18:18.

“And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and

Page 3

the gates thereof, and the wall thereof.” Rev. 21:15. This has reference to God’s ministers measuring and defining the church of the golden reed of truth.

“And the city lieth four square.” Verse 16. This beautifully conveys to our mind the consistency and symmetrical beauty of the church of God. All her ways are equal. She fills the measure of perfection on every side.

Here again is a contrast between God’s church and man’s institutions. They are generally formed by a tenacious devotion to one or two elements of the Christian system, to the utter neglect of other more vital elements. Thus they are deformed and illshaped structures. But God’s church is complete on all sides.

“And the building of the wall of it was of jasper, and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass.” Ver. 18

The jasper wall shows the clearness and glory of divine salvation “And the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass. There are various figures employed in the scriptures by which the church is represented as pure gold. Thus the most precious and endurable metal, and stones art used to convey an idea of her purity, brightness, glory and of her salvation gifts and ministry, etc.

In verses 19-21, we are told how the foundations of her walls and her gates were garnished with all manner of precious stones. These were the excellent gifts which shone in the apostles. Twelve gates, three on each side, give ingress to the golden city. These very beautifully show that men of all nationality, and of all conditions have access to the church of the firstborn, directly from their present standpoint. That the Jew has no advantage over the Gentile, nor the moralist over the drunkard; and neither class need change over to the other class, or go around on some other side, but all may enter directly by repentance and faith in Christ. Amen.

“And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.” Ver. 22. Jesus Christ is himself the “tower of the flock, the strong hold of the daughter of Zion.” Micah 4:8. No towering steeples of men’s erection are the manifestations of God’s church. These are the mast poles of the crafts of Babylon. In the church only Christ is lifted up, only God is exalted.

The city had no need of the sun. neither of the moon to shine in it. Being a spiritual city it is not illuminated with natural lights. But the glory of God, and the Lamb is the light thereof. Amen.

“And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honor into it.” Ver. 24.

The saved of the nations shall walk in the light of it. When Christ returns, kingdoms and nations shall have an end: hence, this is now true before his second advent. It is true that the good and the noble of the nations enter this divine church.

“And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.” Ver. 25.

No night there, no darkness, corruption or sin. And the gates of this new Jerusalem shall not be shut at all. Not a moment’s delay is necessary on the part of God to save souls at any time the whole year round. Christ is the door, and “through him we both have access unto the Father.” John 10:9. Eph. 2:18. Vastly different this door is from the sect doors which are opened by preachers, and only at stated times.

“And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.” Ver 27.

The Lord adds the members to the church, and it is an utter impossibility to deceive him, or cover from his eyes any sin of defiling element in the heart. No person can enter the church of God on earth who does not meet the conditions of enrollment in heaven. It is not so in the various branches of Babylon. The mass of their membership written in the earth have no place in God’s church book in heaven. Thank God or the holy Jerusalem in which are no sinners. This agrees with 1 Peter 2:5. “Ye are a spiritual house, an holy priesthood.”

And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. — Rev. 22: 1.

In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. — Rev. 22:2.

Without any interruption or change of subject the description continues right on into the 22nd chapter. “In the midst of it,” etc., “was there the tree of life.” The little pronoun “it” refers directly back to the “holy Jerusalem,” “the bride, the Lamb’s wife,” of 21:9, 10 No other antecedent can be formed for it. They also harmonize in description, “The holy Jerusalem,” “In the midst of the street of it.” Streets pertain to cities. But very few persons have read this whole record and traced its connection and unity of subject all the way through. Though the lesson starts out with “the Lamb’s wife,” which is clearly seen to be the “holy Jerusalem,” its description is so high and sacred and glorious the reader soon forgets that he is reading the description of the divine church that came down out of heaven to this earth; and his thoughts are carried up to heaven, as the location of the scene. Though we sing of “Heaven come down to the sanctified wholly,” this is only true of its elements which compose God’s church. For heaven is in reality a fixed location, the abode of God and the angels. These facts prove that the new Jerusalem is the church, and not heaven; for heaven itself could not come down from God out of heaven.

“And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and the Lamb.”

All this is beautifully true of God’s church. The throne of God is his holiness. — Psa. 47:8. The pure river of the water of life is the stream of salvation which surely flows now in the midst of the fold of Christ: and it proceeds from God’s own holiness. We are made partakers of his holiness, and that is salvation into the image of God. That fountain which has been flowing in the midst of the street of the Beloved City, down through the ages, was “opened to the inhabitants of Jerusalem” when Jesus was nailed to the cross. See Zech. 13:1. We cannot take time and space to trace the glorious crystal stream as it is seen sparkling in prophecy. The reader will get a good look at the same in Isa. 32:1, 2. Eze. 47:1-9. Zech. 14:8, 9. In all the scriptures this healing cleansing stream of life is located right here in God’s church. In the above words of Isa. it applies to Christ himself; accordingly we hear him crying out to the people, saying, “If any man thirst let him come unto me.” — Jno. 7:37. Thank God! the stream still flows as clear as ever.

And on either side of the river was the tree of life which bears twelve manner of fruit, and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. Christ in us produces constant fruit the whole year round. Christ is the only healer of the nations. In heaven there will not be nations, only one, the “holy nation,” the redeemed. Neither will there be any healing done there. But “now is the accepted time, behold, now is the day of salvation.” Now or never men must apply to the great Physician and be healed of the malady of sin. All scriptures show that Christ is the tree of life, and now is the time to be healed by the leaves of this tree, by the gospel. We are told that wisdom is a “tree of life to them that lay hold upon her.” Prov. 3:18, and Christ is our wisdom. 1 Cor. 1:24, 30. Therefore he is the tree of life. How do we lay hold upon it? Answer. By faith in Jesus Christ, and through his blood, his Spirit and truth, overcoming all sin, the world and the devil. Therefore “hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.” Rev. 2:7. “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.” Rev. 12:11. “Who is he that overcometh the world but he that is born of God?” “And this is the victory that overcometh the world even our faith.” We believe now and here, the blood is applied, we testify and are overcomers now and here; hence, we take of the tree of life now and here, therefore also we dwell in the holy city new Jerusalem now and here.

And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him. And they shall see his face: and his name shall be in their foreheads. Rev. 22:3, 4. The curse of God rests upon defiled Babylon, and upon all sin; but in the preceding chapters we have the record of God’s people being called out of Babylon, and they are now arrayed in fine linen clean and white, even the righteousness of the saints. Therefore there is no more curse upon them.

“The throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it.” His throne we have seen, is holiness, the same in heaven and in earth; and holiness becometh thy house. God’s church is holy, hence in her is the throne of God, and of the Lamb. It is true that Christ reigns supreme over his church.

“And they shall see his face.” Yes, “we look not at the things that are seen, but at the things that are unseen.” 2 Cor. 4:18. Yea, saith the apostle, “we see Jesus.” Heb. 2:9 And indeed he promised to manifest himself unto us as he does not unto the world. Jno. 14:21, 22. Though we do not see Jesus as we shall see him, in a sense we do see him now in the midst of his holy church, and therefore we need not go to the future for a fulfillment of this text.

“And his name shall be in their foreheads.” Hear again what the Spirit says — not to a future age, but to the churches here on earth: “Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out; and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.” Rev. 3:12. On each holy overcomer is written the name of the city of God, which is new Jerusalem. So he carries the name and marks of the city to which he belongs, in the open view of all men. Moreover, he is also branded with the new name of Christ our sanctification, and all such are therefore epistles of Christ, known and read of all men. Two kinds of marks are spoken of in the the word. First, I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus.” As the marks of his crucifixion proved him the identical Christ risen from the dead. So every mark of our crucifixion and death, to sin proves that we have died with him, and with him risen to walk in newness of life. Second, there are the marks of’ the beast spoken of in Revelation, which comprise all signs, badges, doctrines and modes of expression by which men indicate their sect relation. The marks of Christ, show that we belong to Christ alone, and only glory in his cross. The marks of the beast prove that men belong to man organized and beast governed sects of confusion. All the inhabitants of the new Jerusalem bear the name of that beloved City, and of Christ its Lord. Praise God! this is all true in the church of God.

And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever. — Rev. 22: 5.

Literal cities pass through a night of comparative darkness every twenty-four hours, but God’s church being a spiritual city is not dependent upon the literal sun for her light. God and the Lamb are the light thereof. And this speaking of the church after coming out of Babylon, her glory shall never again be obscured, nor her light smothered.

And they who inhabit it, “shall reign forever and ever.” Amen! This also is true of all the sanctified host of God here on earth. We shall prove that it was true of the church in her primitive purity, and is again true of the white bride that has come out of Babylon. Peter calls the church a “royal priesthood,” which means a priesthood of kings. 1 Pet. 2: 9. Paul said to the Romans, (5:17) “They that receive abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness shall reign in this life by one Christ Jesus.” John writing to the seven churches of Asia breaks forth in praise, “unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, and hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father, to him be glory.” etc. — Rev. 1:5, 6. So John and the holy people who dwelt in Asia in A. D. 96, were already kings, and all who abode in the faith, to the end of life are reigning with Christ forever and ever.

The plan of redemption is symbolized in Revelation by a book having seven seals; and as soon as the same was opened to lost men, and the blood of Christ was applied to the hearts of men, “They sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood, out of every kindred and tongue, and people, and nation; and hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.” Rev. 5:9, 10. Thus at the very opening of the kingdom of heaven on earth men who entered the same were made kings as well as priests. They reigned on the earth. And we are told in Daniel that after the long apostasy the saints of the most high shall again “take the kingdom,” and even the “greatness of the kingdom under the whole heavens.” Amen!

We have now traced the new heavens and new earth, the new Jerusalem, to the end of its description in this lesson. It cannot be denied that there is one continued city described from Rev. 21:9, to chapter 22, verse 5. Therefore all that is here affirmed of the holy city applies to the bride of Christ, the church, and we have just seen that every specification of the city, is true of the church of God, according to the word. It must be seen by all reasonable minds that so many things that are affirmed of the new Jerusalem would not all agree with the Biblical characteristics of the church, if the two were not identical.

St. Louis, Mich., Dec. 3, 1894.

Dear Brethren: Our testimony is we are saved by grace through faith and kept by power divine. Since we returned from the assembly meeting we held three week’s meeting in St. Louis. The brethren, Warren, Reeves, Cox and C. F. Wright assisted in breaking the bread of life. This meeting truly was a blessing to all of God’s little ones who love the truth. Many of the little ones were made to see by the Word through the Spirit a deficiency in their past experience, and were willing to measure up to the Word. To God be all the glory! To morrow evening, the Lord willing, we will commence a series of meetings at Alma. Bro’s Warren and Reeves are expected to carry on the meeting, as we are getting ready to start on our winter campaign by the 14th. The Lord willing, we will commence meeting m Owosso the 16th. From there we will go through to Ohio. We have many calls from Sandusky, Wood, and Seneca counties. Pray for us that we may understand the whole will of God, and be successful in winning souls. Yours in the gospel,

Dear Brethren: Knowing it to be the will of God we began meeting in Pettisville, Ohio Nov. 10, and held meetings over two Sabbaths. This was a new place as meetings had never been held there in the evening light. There was a good attendance and good interest in the meetings; also comparatively good order, as his place has been known for bad order in other meetings. It was largely a seed sowing time. One came to the altar and received the forgivenes of his sins. Bro. and Sister Wilson from here were over to the meeting, and were used of God in sending forth the truth. Others were there from near Ottokee, and helped in the meeting. We are now on our way to Penn. Blanco will be our address. Pray for us. Your brother and sister, sanctified wholly by a second work of grace,

Dear Saints: We are still saved. Hallelujah! We hereby make a call for a letter from as many as the Lord leads to write, giving a full testimony of how God by his Spirit led you out of Babylon into the light, and how he keeps you in this perfect love. We desire to use these testimonies for the benefit of others. Those never having been in Babylon will please testify to his saving and keeping power. Now, dear ones, direct your letters to me at Grand Junction, Mich. Hoping to hear from you soon. I am yours in him.

Dear Trumpet Readers: “The blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth me from all sin.” Through the reading of the “Biblical trace of the Church,” I have lately renounced Methodism. If there be any of the saints in my locality, I would be glad to communicate with them. I desire here to render praise to God for curing me of neuralgia on the 25th of Oct. in answer to prayer. The cure was instantaneous. Oh it is blessed to feel the healing touch of the great Physician in the body as well as the spirit.

Your sister, saved to the uttermost,

Love’s Lake, La,

Dear Saints of God: I feel led to write my testimony for publication. I have been living in sectism for twelve years and did not know what salvation was until I heard the evening light preached last winter by Bro. Owens. Thank God! wife and I are both saved and walking in the light. We have the Spirit of truth which the world cannot receive. Sanctified by the Holy Ghost and kept by the power of God. Pray for my wife the 25th day of Dec. at 8 A. M. that she may be healed of heart trouble. I believe in divine healing of the body. Your brother in the one body,

I am so thankful to my blessed Savior for this wonderful salvation that saves me just now, and keeps me day by day, and for the Holy Spirit, the spirit of truth that sanctifies my soul. I praise the Lord for his healing power, and for delivering me from all sectism. I pray that God may send some dear ones here who will not shun to declare the whole counsel of God, as the people of this place have never heard the pure word. If any of God’s little ones go through here and can stop, my house is open, though it be small. If only some one sent of God would come here much good might be done. The Lord’s will be done in and through me. Yours in perfect love,

with such suavity and cunningness, as might excite the envy of the most ardent seventh day Adventist, as well as to expose the cloven foot of her master, the devil, in nearly every sentence of her literary works.

But some one may say, “They do heal the sick.” So do other physicians — some cases. Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and it became a serpent. The magicians of Egypt, also in like manner did with their enchantments, but Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods. They also turned waters into blood, caused frogs to come up from the water, turned dust into lice as did Aaron and Moses, but “they could not stand before Moses because of the boils,” and they disappeared. In like manner these latter day magicians cannot stand before God’s true ministers, who are bold enough to administer a rebuke in the name of Jesus, and command the evil spirit to come out of them, as did Paul the damsel possessed with a spirit of divination. Acts 16. God has given his ministers power over all the power of the enemy. Luke 10.

I have already proven that God is a person, and not mere mind. “Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones: for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.” Mat. 18. “And they shall see his face.” Rev. 22. “He that hath seen me hath seen my Father.” Jno. 14. “God was manifested in the flesh.” 1 Tim. 3. Stephen “being filled with the Holy Spirit looked up steadfastly into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God.” Acts 7. “I speak that which I have seen with my Father, and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.” Jno. 8.

PROP NO. 2.

“God is mind, he is divine principle, not person.”

DISSECTED.

“And God said unto Moses, I am that I am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.” Ex. 3:14. “I” is a first personal pronoun. “Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it. and will glorify it again.” Jno. 12.

PROP NO. 3.

“God includes all, and is reflected by all that is real and eternal.”

DISSECTED.

“Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ fie is none of his.” Rom. 8. “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do.” Jno. 8.

PROP NO. 4.

“There is but one Spirit because there is but one God.”

DISSECTED.

“But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land.” Num. 14. “Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: and every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God; and this is that spirit of antichrist.” We are of God: he that knoweth God, heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error. 1 Jno. 4.

PROP NO. 5.

“Spirit is the only substance.”

DISSECTED.

SUBSTANCE. The permanent subject or cause of phenomenon, whether spiritual or material; body; matter. — WEBSTER. Matter. Substance. Material or substantial part of anything. Matter is divided into three kinds. Solid, Liquid and Aeriform. — W. Not satisfied with wresting the word of God, scientists would fain wrest the English language to further their diabolical scheme for deceiving souls.

Mrs. Eddy says, “Mortal body and material man are delusions that spiritual understanding destroys.” Paul says, Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body. My acquaintance with Mrs. E. and the apostle Paul forces me to the conclusion that Mrs. E. is deluded, and not Paul.

Mrs. E. further declares, men say, “The body is dead;” but this death was the departure of a mortal illusion, not of matter. To show the utter fallacy of such teaching let us put Mrs. E’s version on Gen. 2:7. “And the Lord God formed mortal illusion of the dust of the ground.” Oh what an instrument the devil has made out of Mrs. Eddy and other “Mortal bodies” to carry on his work on this earth. Peter did not say, “Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this “Mortal illusion” to stir you up by putting you in rememberance.” 2 Pet. 2. And I praise the Lord for it.

PROP NO. 6.

“God (mind) is the only life. When Christ, our life, shall be manifested, then will ye also be maifested with him in glory; man will be found in God’s image and likeness, perfect and eternal.”

DISSECTED.

That God is the only life we know to be truth, but to assert that mind is that God is to utter a lie in the face of God’s truth. Christ will never be manifested to scientists, for Jesus himself says, “He that hath my commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.” Jno. 14. This applies only to God’s church, who “follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth.” But scientists and all other ists are excluded unless they repent, and forsake their whitewashed crafts.

PROP NO. 7.

“God is mind; and there is but one mind, because there is but one God.” [Reader, the devil is hiding] here, but his cloven foot is sticking out.]

DISSECTED.

In dissecting No, 2 it is proven that God is a person, and not mere mind. James speaks of a double minded man, thus refuting the “one mind” heterodoxy. See James 1:8 and 4:8.

PROP NO. 8.

“Mind is deathless, limitless, eternal and never enters the finite. * * * Mind is never within matter. * * * The eternal cannot be in the temporal, nor the immortal in mortality.”

DISSECTED.

The God of the Bible is eternal, and enters the finite or the temporal or mortal. For ye are the temple of the living God: as God hath said, I will dwell in them.” 2 Cor. 6. The “Spirit of truth, whom the world (sinners) cannot receive * * * dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.” Jno. 14. “He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.” Rom. 8.

PROP NO. 9.

“God is soul or spirit, and spirit hath no outline. Soul is neither a limited body, nor a limited mind: therefore it cannot be a person, * * * Nothing but spirit can contain spirit because spirit is larger than all else.”

DISSECTED.

The scriptures refuting No. 8 prove that Spirit enters our mortal bodies.

Here are some more to prove that soul is “limited,” and that it can be a “person.” “And the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.” Acts 2. “Elijah cried unto the Lord and said, O Lord my God, I pray thee, let this child’s soul come into him again.” 1 King 17.

PROP NO. 10.

“Man was forever in God, or mind. Therefore mind can never be in man. * * * A portion of God could not enter man, or that portion would become finite, losing the character of deity and becoming less than God.”

DISSECTED.

Every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of anti-christ, whereof ye have heard that it should come, and even now already is it in the world. 1 Jno. 4. This means that Jesus Christ abides in our flesh, because infidels and scientists admit that Jesus Christ, a man by that name, once lived here in the flesh; but “If a man love me he will keep my commandments: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.” Jno. 14. But scientists do not love him because they do not know him, nor keep his commandments, and are therefore dead in trespasses and sins; but “He that hath the Son hath life, and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.” 1 Jno. 5.

PROP NO. 11.

“Divine science shows that matter and mortal bodies are the illusions of human belief. * * * It is obvious that matter has no divine principle or proof.”

DISSECTED.

“Divine” and “Christian” are titles stolen by scientists from God that they may be better able to trap the unwary under the cover of these stolen guises. Divinity pertains to God alone, and scientists have no right to the property of the God whose existence they deny. Divinity is eternal. Mrs. Eddy’s science was only “discovered in 1866.”

The apostle Paul had partaken of the divine nature through obedience to the word of God, and he says: For we which live are always delivered unto death for Jesus’ sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. 2 Cor. 4, thus refuting Mrs. Eddy’s claims for her newly discovered “Sceince.” “Besiege sickness, sin and death with the scientific rule of health and life, * * * for it heals the sick and sinful,” says Christian Science.

“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved,” saith the Bible. The apostles nor Jesus make no allusion to Christian Science as the means of salvation. They say not a word of the “Scientific rule of health.” But Paul does tell us to “avoid the oppositions of science, falsely so-called,” 1 Tim. 6. This so-called Christian Science is all opposition to God’s word and plan of salvation. For instance: Mrs. E. says, “The belief that man has beginning and end, that he is both soul and body, both spiritual and material, sensual; sick and dying — terminates in discord, in the error that is met and destroyed by truth.” Jesus Christ “the way, the truth and the life,” contradicts this false teacher and says, “Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul; but rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Mat. 10.

PROP NO. 12.

“God never created matter, for there is nothing in spirit out of which matter could be made.”

DISSECTED.

MATTER. Substance; constituting bodies — Webster. Fo.. ..im were all things created that are in heaven, and that are on earth, visible and invisible whether they be thrones, or dominions or principalities or powers: all things were, created by him and for him. Col. 1.

PROP NO. 13.

“In Christian Science the rule is that none but the pure in heart can see God, in proportion to his purity is man in the proper order of his celestial being.”

DISSECTED.

In No. 1 Mrs. E. declares that no eye hath seen God. Here she declares the contrary to be the rule. But instead of being the rule of Christian Science, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God,” is God’s ultimatum. A scientist can never become pure in heart unless he first renounces Christian Science and its mind-god, and accepts the living God, the personal God, “which knoweth the hearts” and who “purifies the heart by faith.” Acts 15. I will state that the word “Pure admits of no degrees of compassion or “proportion of purity,” as this false teacher would have us believe. Any thing short of pure is impure.

PROP NO. 14.

“There is but one true Spirit; and neither spirits many, nor gods many.”

DISSECTED.

For though there be that are called gods whether in heaven or in earth (as there be gods many and lords many). 1 Cor. 8. Paul speaks of “wicked spirits in heavenly places.” Eph. 6:12 (margin).

PROP NO. 15.

Here she reiterates the falsehood that mind is infinite the only ego (I), and that mind formed man.

DISSECTED.

Remember this and shew yourselves men: bring it again to mind. O ye transgressors, remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me.” Isa. 46. These words are uttered by a living, personal God. The Lord God who “formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul.”

PROP NO. 16.

“Since God is omnipotent and omnipresent, there is no room for his opposite; divine pardon destroys sin. Life destroys death. Truth destroys error, and love destroys hate. Being destroyed, sin needs no forgiveness. Only those who forsake sin can understand its unreality.”

DISSECTED.

Here she flatly denies the existence of the devil, because there is “no room” for him. Although in Job’s time he found plenty of room to walk up and down the earth. Job 1. Why! he told the Savior that he owned the kingdoms of the world. Mat. 4:9. In Peter’s time he had plenty of room to walk about seeking whom he might devour. 1 Pet. 5. In Rev. 12 we find that he and his angels have been cast out of heaven into the earth, and that right now he is making war with the remnant of God’s people which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ;” and I am told in Rev. 20 that he is soon to be cast into the lake of fire and brimstone. But he does not trouble scientists: he thinks too much of them. “Only those who forsake sin can understand its unreality.” It would be simply impossible for any one to forsake something unreal or non-existing, unless it be those who are “Metaphysically Scientific;” but they can do almost any thing in their mind. This, “No devil, no sin” doctrine is the devil’s “trade mark:” any of his institutions can make use of it without in fringing or incurring the risk of being prosecuted. Spiritualism says, “There is no God, there is no devil; sin is a lesser degree of righteousness.” Pantheism says, There is no God but nature; Infidelity says, “The scriptures are not inspired; Christ was not the Son of God; there is no God but nature.” Christian Science says, “There is no God but mind; there is no devil. Sin is the unreality of being,” and wrests the scriptures from Genesis to Revelation.

A Roman priest told me recently that the Bible is not the word of God. Protestant preachers declare that if God will permit the wicked to go to hell, they have no use for such a God. Yet God is still calling, “Whosoever will.” What an awful bedlam hell will be, where all the religious soreheads, hypocrites and unbelievers are doomed to spend eternity, where distinction can not be bought. “The wicked shall be turned into hell with all the nations that forget God,” is the fiat regardless of creed or profession, or previous condition, financially or morally.

The moral unbeliever must there mingle with drunkards and murderers. The prince, the peasant and the pauper are doomed to spend eternity devoid of weal: where all is woe and wailing. The millionaire is on a level there with the meanest serf and slave. The maid on whose brow shines beauty and pleasure, who enjoys all the pleasures and luxuries of a palatial home, and upon whom her parents lavish their wealth and affections so freely, and at whose commands are servants to attend to her every wish and to satisfy her every whim; who is wasting her days in idolence, and pandering to her lusts, will take her downward march on doomsday, with those who have been reared in dens of vice amid filth and wretchedness, poverty and destitution; and worst of all, these careless ones, who made no profession, who deceived no souls, and who neglected their souls salvation during their sojourn here, are doomed to pass an endless night with demons and devils. Priests and preachers of whom God saith, “They are greedy dogs, they can never have enough,” with spiritualists, sectarians and Christian scientists. God in his word says, “avoid them,” and the only way to avoid them is to seek salvation, find salvation and live salvation. When Satan’s intercessors, false teachers and professors shall have met in pandemonium by and by, they will find, with their successors, and all their predecessors, that the devil had stuffed their cranium with a lie.

PROP NO. 17.

“Jehovah pronounced matter accursed, from whence error sprang and blessed the earth “for man’s sake.”

DISSECTED.

This is another perversion. Jehovah pronounced the serpent accursed. Error sprang from the serpent. “And the Lord said unto the serpent, because thou hast done this, thou art accursed above all cattle.” Gen. 3:14. “That old serpent called the devil and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world.” Rev. 12. Jehovah did not bless the earth for man’s sake. “Cursed is the ground for thy sake: in sorrow thou thalt eat of it all the days of thy life: thorns also, and thistles shall it bring forth to thee.” Gen. 3.

PROP NO. 18.

Here Christian Science, she claims, is preeminently scientific being based on truth.

DISSECTED.

As I have by the help of God proven to all fair minded Bible students and believers that this sect is based on the blackest falsehoods from beginning to end, I feel perfectly at liberty to reverse the statement of Mrs. E. and truthfully say that Christian Science is preeminently unscientific being based on falsehood.

PROP NO. 19.

Life, truth, and love, constitute the triune God, or divine principle, mind.

DISSECTED.

The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit constitute the triune God of the Bible, whom God’s people worship, Matt. 28 and I Jno. 5:7. There is no life in Christian Science. “He that hath the Son of God hath life.” There is no truth in Christian Science: Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth and the life.” There is no love in Christian Science: “God is love” and love is of God. Scientists do not believe in God. Therefore the love of God is not in them.

PROP NO. 20.

“Our baptism is a purification from the flesh. Our church is built on Christ the divine principle of the man Jesus.”

DISSECTED.

This twentieth and last prop supporting their platform embodies all the brass that Satan has accumulated during the 6000 years of his business career. In A. D. 32 Jesus said, I will build my church. And in A. D. 33 after the day of Pentecost, the Lord added to the church daily such, as should be saved, (Namely, all that believed. Acts 2:47.) which proves that the church of Christ, “the church of the Living God” was already built, and now in the nineteenth century comes the false teacher and says, “In 1866 I discovered metaphysical healing and named it Christian Science,” and our church is built on Christ.” I have shown that Christ only built one church, and that that church is not named Christian Science. I will add also that “there is one baptism, and this is not the putting away of the filth of the flesh” as this scientist claims her baptism does, “but the answer of a good conscience toward God.” 1 Pet. 3. But it is expected that a false church is equipped with a false baptism.

There is also one faith.” Eph. 4. It was delivered to the saints, Jude says, not to scientists; and the saints are still in possession of it. How can a scientist have faith in a God whose existence they deny? James says, Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up. But what saith Christian Science? “Maintain the facts of science: that Mind is god, and therefore cannot be sick; also that what is termed matter cannot be sick; that all causation is spirit, acting through spiritual law. Then hold your ground with a lawyer’s skill, and you will win.” “If you believe in inflamed and weak nerves, you are liable to. an attack from that source. You will call it neuralgia, but I call it illusion.

Now why do scientists stick to the commandment, “heal thesick,” and ignore all others? Jesus said in his commission, Preach the gospel, cast out devils, cleanse the lepers, etc. Paul asks, How shall they preach except they be sent? And I ask how can they cast out devils who declare in the name of their master, the devil, that there is no devil, and that there are no evil spirits.

Now, what induces these messengers of Satan to heal the sick? They do heal in some cases; otherwise, they could not deceive. The Bible speaks of signs and lying wonders.” 2 Thess. 2. Also of a certain beast who “deceived those that dwell on the earth by the means of miracles, Rev. 13, and of certain “deceitful workers transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.” 2 Cor. 11. Perhaps there may be some influence that induces so many to become Christian Scientists and “heal the sick.”

Mrs. Eddy writes: “The following is a case of heart disease, which I cured (Peter said Jesus did the healing. Acts 4:10.) without having seen the patient: — Please find enclosed a check for five hundred dollars in reward for your services.” Who would not heal the sick?

Another writes: In union there is strength, and only through union, with that infinite truth and love which is omnipotent, can we heal as Christian metaphysicians, and we do have great blessings in healing. My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. Classes will be formed for the first of each month. Fifteen lessons for class course, twelve dollars; for private instruction, twenty dollars.

Jesus said, “Freely ye have received, freely give,” and the saints of the living God obey him — “cast out devils, heal the sick, cleanse the lepers.” “Preach the gospel,” and practice what they preach. But “sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again.”

The doctrines of Christian Science briefly stated are these:

God is mind, not person.

“Spirit is God, soul; and soul, or spirit is not in man.

“There is but one God. The spiritual He, She, and It are mind, and mind’s ideas.

“Jesus’ spiritual origin, entitled him to sonship in science, God the Father, Jesus the Son, divine science the Holy Ghost.”

“The only evil or devil in the universe is made up of erroneous beliefs.”

“Satan is not a person, but an illusion.” “A lie is the only satan there is.

“Sin needs no forgiveness.”

“As long as we believe that the soul can sin, or that soul is in body, we can never understand the science of being.”

“It is the sense of sin, and not the sinful soul, that is to be lost.”

“The only reality of sin, sickness, or death, is the awful fact that unrealities seem real.”

“As death finds mortal man, so shall he be after death, until probation affects the needful change.”

“Perfection is gained only by degrees.” “Each sin and error possessing us at the instant of death, ceases not with the disolution of the matter, but endures till the death of the error.”

“There is no death,” “things are not what they seem.”

“Man is neither young, nor old; he has neither birth nor death.”

“If man did not exist before his material organization, he cannot exist after the body is disintegrated; if we live after death, we must have lived before birth.”

“Now is the accepted time, behold now is the day of salvation, means not that now men must prepare for a future world, salvation, or safety.”

“Matter has no life to lose, and spirit never dies.”

“Mortal body and material man are delusions.”

“Man is never sick: for mind is not sick, and matter cannot be.”

“Every sort of sickness is a degree of insanity; that is, sickness is always a hallucination.”

“In healing the sick remember that all is mind, and there is no matter.”

“Jesus and his students gave the divine demonstration of mind-healing.” (“Private instructions, twenty dollars.”)

“In Latin, the word rendered disciples, signifies student.” “Had my students (“Fifteen lessons for class course, twelve dollars.”) abided closely by my teaching, not one of them could ever have shamed my system by malpractice, or turned from Christian Science to mesmerism.”

“Heaven is not a locality, but a state,” “No final judgment awaits mortals. Angels are God’s importations to man, not messengers,” My angels are exalted thoughts.”

“Error theorizes that whatsoever is born of the dust, returns to dust, and has a resurrection from the dust.”

“A Christian Scientist requires ‘SCIENCE AND HEALTH” (Mrs. Eddy’s book) for his text book, and so do all his students and patients. Because it is the standard work, the first ever published on Christian Science.

I have seen scientists going to meeting Sundays carrying not a Bible but Mrs. Eddy’s “SCIENCE AND HEALTH.” They have discarded the Bible because, they say they are advanced beyond its teachings. Now, dear reader, every one of the-fundamental doctrines of Christian Science are reduced to nothing by the word of God; and by searching your Bible you will find a number of passages that destroys each of the above theories. “All scriptures, divinely inspired, is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” 2 Tim. 3.

Hundreds of falsehoods might be cited and met by God’s word. Christian Science literature teems with the devil’s finger marks through and through; but why waste precious time and space on such a mass of corruption? Sufficient has been written to convince and warn the honest soul. Heed the warping! Beware of Christian Science — a name of blasphemy, and shun the devil’s fondest pet, based on nonentity:

No heaven to gain, no hell to shun,
Theu what’s the use to pray;
No God, no devil, no sin, they gay,
Just “HEAL” and get your pay.

The devil is busy setting traps for human souls to day. There seems no place of safety outside the “narrow way.”

I’ll cling to Father’s Bible, it is good enough for me:
And defy the devil’s delusions; for the truth hath made me free.

Jno. E. Roberts.
