The Lost Soul.

_____

My Savior so cruelly hung on a tree,
The dear precious word did reveal him to me:
I was lying in darkness, so I could not see;
I ought to have seen him — but I did not.

His soft, tender voice ever whispered his love;
The Spirit did call me so kind as a dove,
Calling sweetly from sin to bright mansions above;
I ought to have heard him — but I did not.

The touch of his pleadings was earnest and bold,
His presence was awful as I could behold,
But oh dark was the scene, for my heart was so cold;
I ought to have listened — but I did not.

The call he repeated, so surely I know,
And bade me to him, just now I should go,
Lest my soul should forever be in endless woe.
I ought to’ve received him — but I did not.

The Spirit departed and called me no more,
His divine presence was not felt as before;
Oh how sad! for I felt I was lost evermore;
I would have received him but I could not.

G. R. Achor.

FREE HOLINESS.

_____

IN the twelfth chapter of Hebrews we find that the word of God teaches that without holiness no man shall see the Lord. Some get the idea that this state of holiness is reached just about the time a person passes over the river of death, but St. Luke tells us it is our privilege to obtain deliverance through the mercies of God, and to serve him “in holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.” — Luke i. 75. Not just at death but all the days of our life. The Word also teaches in 1 Thess. that “this is the will of God even your sanctification.

Notwithstanding all these scriptures, it is no uncommon thing to hear professed Christians denouncing holiness, or heart purity, in this life, and even teaching that a person cannot live without committing sin.

About all holiness fighters claim that they themselves sin more or less every day. in word, thought and deed, and at the same time claim to be children of God. Shame on such persons! The devil himself would not dare to make a broader assertion and carry it out. In 1 Jno. iii. 8 we read about where such persons belong. If you ever hear anyone pleading up for sin, and at the same time claiming to be a child of God, just turn to the above named scripture and find out where such a one belongs. It reads as follows: “He that committeth sin is of the devil,” and the next verse says: “Whosoever is born of God, doth not commit sin.”

Show me an opposer of holiness and I will show you a sinner every time; and if a sinner he is not a child of God, hut according to the scriptures just quoted is a member of the devil’s family.

When people give some of their own ideas and views concerning the scriptures, it is a very easy matter to open the Bible and show them where they belong, and who is their spiritual father.

There are a great many people in these last days who claim to believe in holiness, until holiness has become quite popular. But when the matter is brought to the Bible standard the masses of even holiness professors are “weighed in the balances and found wanting.” But why is such the case? It is because people seem to get the idea that God does not mean just what he says in his word.

While traveling in some of the western states not long since it was my privilege to meet with many professors of holiness, some of whom were up to the Bible standard, while others represented various phazes of the sham holiness throughout the land. Some were in holiness associations, which is something not sustained by the word of God, but is linked with sect holiness.

One very prominent enterprise of Satan, on this line, which has ensnared many honest souls, is what is termed “Free Holiness.” Those holding to this young counterfeit order of holiness are not slow to carry out the liberties asserted in the name, through the perversion of the real meaning of the same. What they mean by “Free Holiness,” is free to reject any part of the Bible that does not suit them. Many of the commands of Jesus are non-essentials according to their views. They consider the ordinances of baptism, feet washing, etc. unnecessary commands, and some even say these were the “carnal ordinances” that were nailed to the cross. But any one reading the Bible in the proper light would have to read but few of the many plain passages of scripture on this subject in order to see that it was only the old Jewish ordinances done away with, and nailed to the cross. And after his death upon the cross we find Jesus (Matt. xxviii. 19, 20) giving the command to his disciples to go forth and administer this ordinance, and all his ministers even to the present day have received the same commission. Jesus meant just what he said when he gave this commission, and also when he commanded all believers to be baptized.

Concerning feet washing he said, “If I then your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.” * * * “If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.” — Jno. xiii. 14-17. A holiness that does away with such plain commands would indeed be a “free” sham holiness. When people have to reject or twist any part of the word of God in order to sustain their Views, they are truly walking on dangerous grounds, and need to seek a more thorough acquaintance with God and his word.

__________

BEAUTIES OF NATURE.

_____

THE works of the Lord are great, sought out of all them that have pleasure therein. His work is honorable and glorious: and his righteousness endureth forever. He hath made his wonderful works to be remembered: the Lord is gracious and full of compassion. He hath given meat unto them that fear him: he will ever be mindful of his covenant. He hath shewed his people the power of his works, that he may give them the heritage of the heathen. — Psa. cxi. 2- 6. It has often been a wonder to me when I look around me and see all the lovely works of creation, and the things that God has provided for the welfare and happiness of his people; why so many are so thoughtless and unthankful, and do not appreciate his kindness and wisdom; but go on in their blindness, living in sin and open rebellion against God. The great book of nature is one of the grandest evidences of God’s love and wisdom. O how it thrills the soul of a Christian with joy and wonder, and what thoughts of purity and holiness enter the mind as he looks over the beautiful fields and woods on a lovely day in mid-summer, when all nature is clothed in robes of living green, and hears the sweet songs of the binds, and realizes the love of God in every tree, plant and flower, when all nature is united in uttering praises to the Creator. When the heart is made pure and free from sin, how sweetly we realize the love of God in all nature. The mountains, the hills, the valleys, and streams all show forth the wondrous works of God in such scenes of love and wisdom that it fills the heart of a child of God with joy and praises to God. The great book of nature itself as she presents herself to our eyes in all her loveliness, reveals to us the pure love and wisdom of God better than can be done by word or pen. If we pluck a flower and smell its sweet perfume and realize its beauties, we are made to exclaim, How wonderful are thy works, O Lord! The sun. moon and stars, some of them probably much larger than the earth itself; and the power by which they are held in mid space, high in the heavens, and which holds them to their orbit and controls their every movement, is beyond the power of the human mind to comprehend. With all the knowledge and wisdom which has ever been attained by the arts and sciences of men, in order to determine the cause and effect of material things, they are compelled to acknowledge that nothing but the miraculous power of God is able to create worlds, set them in mid space, govern and control their motions and seasons; so that all things work together in perfect harmony and for the good of mankind. Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him all ye stars of light. Praise him, ye heaven of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens. Let them praise the name of the Lord: for he commanded, and they were created. He hath also stablished them for ever and ever: he hath made a decree which shall not pass. — Psa. cxlviii. 3- 6. As we step out on a beautiful morning and behold nature in all its glories, what a feeling of holy joy fills the soul as we see all nature praising God in fulfilling its mission, in contributing to the happiness of man: and the calm sweet peace that it brings to our souls. It inspires us with a still greater desire to continue to work in the Master’s vineyard, and to use our influence in trying to bring light and sunshine into the hearts of those who are bowed down in care and sorrow, and whose lives are filled with gloom and despair. Who does not remember in the days of their childhood how sweet the birds appeared to sing in the trees, how lovely the flowers looked, and how beautiful were all the scenes of nature? But as they became older and wandered away in sin and vice, and the soul became corrupted with sin, the beauties of nature failed to create the feeling of peace and love in the heart, which he had experienced in the days of his childhood. Not until he becomes a child again, a child of God, born of the Spirit, free from carnality and worldly lusts, will the beauties of nature thrill the soul with a far greater feeling of joy and peace. Then will nature shine forth in all her loveliness and elevate the soul to a higher sphere of love than had ever been experienced before. By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. He gathered the waters of the sea together as a heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. For he spake, and it was done, he commanded, and it stood fast. — Psa. xxxiii. 6-9.

STOP AND THINK!

_____

CARELESS, Christless, hell-bound sinner, before you go any further, stop for a moment and think! Can you afford to sport yourself on the brink of an eternal hell? Remember, “vengeance is mine” saith the Lord, and soon your brittle thread of existence will be snapped, all your sport and pride will be stopped. Death will soon come and summon you to appear before the judgment bar of God. Soon you will hear your awful doom, “Depart ye cursed into everlasting fire,” etc. Then you will be filled with despair and remorse; all your sins — all the mean things you ever did — all the black part will come up before you and stare you in the face, all loudly crying for vengeance. What will be your reply? Ah! then you will want salvation, but it will be forever too late, the day of grace will be forever gone. But as yet there is hope; you may know God’s mercy. Although the sword of justice is raised to cut you down, he in love forbears the blow and gives you one more opportunity to get saved. Oh dear sinner, it was for you that Jesus died on Calvary’s cross. It was for you he shed his precious blood. Now, just now he invites you to come. None who ever came to him were denied. To you he says: “Come now, let us reason together. Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” — Isa. i. 18.

__________

UNCOVERED MASONRY.

_____

To the Household of God, Greeting: For some time I have felt led to make a few remarks for the encouragement and strengthening of clear Bro. Husted, by way of endorsing him in the exposing of Masonry. Now while I was a Methodist I was also a Mason. While I was but once in the lodge room as an E. A. yet my heart was with them. But when I got salvation by a second work of grace it sanctified or cleansed me clear out of Masonry, Alliance, Methodism and all ism and doctrines of men. Praise God for salvation that makes us free! I took but one degree E. A., but I read the exposition of Elder Bernard, published by the U. B. publishing house of Dayton, Ohio, which gives thirty-three degrees of Masonry and five of Odd Fellowship. Masons told me the work had all been changed, so that Bernard’s exposition was not correct, but I tell you the truth and lie not, I found the first degree verbatim with the exposition insomuch that I knew part of it better than my guide that was leading me, neither clothed nor naked, neither barefoot nor shod, hoodwinked, a cable tow about my neck, etc. Sometimes I could scarce keep from telling him how it was. Talking with my brother in-law a Baptist preacher, he shuddered at me for violating the oath and risking the penalty (having my throat cut from ear to ear, my tongue torn out, etc.). But dear ones it was the old man of sin that took upon himself that awful oath and penalty, not the new man in Christ Jesus. So whilst God uses my tongue for his glory, it is in no danger at all. Glory to Jesus! He is able and will keep me as long as I am in his will and order.

Wherefore come out from among them, and be not partakers of their sins and blasphemous ceremonies; be not yoked up with unbelievers and atheists. The Baptist preacher said to me that none but believers in the Bible can become Masons. Says I, When I was initiated the worshipful master was a deist and went through the solemn awful mockery of mock prayer. God have mercy on his soul, also on the Baptist that upholds Masonry. Now just imagine for a moment Christ or Bro. Paul divested of all clothing except an old shirt, the left arm and breast bare, a pair of drawers on one leg, bare to the knee, a slipper on one foot (neither clothed nor naked, neither barefoot nor shod), blindfolded, led by a string about the neck, kneel in this half naked condition, the open Bible between his hands, one hand below, one above, listening to a mock prayer by perhaps an atheist, then taking upon himself the awful obligation or binding penalty. Oh shame on the devil to think of professing Christians and preachers taking part in such blasphemous ceremonies! In the Alliance they profess to take the Bible for their way bill through life, yet while I was in that order the secretary was a deist. We also see such persons in sectism, the thief, the murderer, the deist, etc. Just so they pay the preacher, they are received in the front ranks.

I am your brother, translated from the kingdom of darkness (Masonic more light) into the kingdom of His dear Son, delivered from all doctrines of devils, free from all organizations of men. Whom Christ has made free is free indeed. Praise God!

Dearly Beloved: I am so thankful for salvation full and free. I love to be continually meditating upon the goodness of God. Jesus saves me and keeps me from all sin. Praise his holy name! We are but few in number, but we keep up our prayer-meetings, and the Lord blesses us wonderfully. Praise the Lord! There are so many who are being deceived. Dear Trumpet Readers: I can say to the glory of God, that I am saved to the uttermost. Glory to God! I am reigning in this life with Christ. Our little girl was very sick; her tongue was coated stiff so she could not talk, and people came in to see her die. They would say I should be doing something for her. I said I would not give her medicine; I will trust the Lord. Though he slay me yet will I trust him. And said if the Lord takes her it is his will, and I will not do anything only what the Word says. We called in the elders and had them to anoint her in the name of the Lord and she got better then got worse than ever. Then we wrote to the Trumpet Office for prayer for her and all at once she was healed. The coat went off her tongue, and the fever left her all in one day, and she has begun to gain. Now she can go out doors and play. She was just as bad as she could be and live. I give God all the glory. I know it is not any good thing that I have done that caused him to heal my little girl; It was love that he has for them that trust in him. They that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Zion which can not be moved, but abideth forever. Praise the Lord!

Salvation has a greater meaning than most people have an idea that it has, yet no one can get to heaven without it. To have salvation, means to be saved from sin, to live a sinless life. The converted person, or babe in Christ, must live a life free from sin, because God does not justify any one in committing sin. Conversion causes a person to live a life free from sin. Sanctification takes out the sinful nature and brings a person into the standing grace.

Let all who are interested in spreading the pure gospel among the German people, send up earnest petitions in behalf of the work here, also that the Lord may speedily equip and send the proper person for the place.

__________

REMOVE THE CAUSE.

_____

A great many people have to be repeatedly scourged with afflictions, trials, calamities, distresses, etc. before they will yield to the will of God. Some must have a good portion of Job’s experience before they will obey, others try Jonah’s plan. Some try to hide from the Lord as Adam did in the garden of Eden. This one has one excuse, and that one has another, and so on, and the Lord often has to let the devil loose on them, as it were, for a while in order to bring them to time.

There are many who seek, seek and seek, and seem never to get a settled experience nor get healed of their diseases and have their scourgings removed, because they will not square up to the Word on what they consider very small matters. For instance, some one is not just willing to make the complete sacrifice on the line of dress, and lays away a goodly number of stylish clothes in the wardrobe, in case of an emergency, that should they backslide it would save much extra expense and time in stepping out into the worldly, circles.

Such ones often insist that they are willing to square up to the Bible in every thing, and declare that they are as plain as they can be, while at the same time were the unnecessary extra bunches of ribbons, etc., clipped from their hats or person, or their injurious corset removed it would touch a tender cord of their heart. No wonder such ones suffer a scourging and cannot bring down the blessings of the Lord for soul and body. The Psalmist says, “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.” Many would be much better off spiritually and bodily if they were to as earnestly plead for the will of God to be done in and through them, as they have been in the past pleading for their idols, and then see to it that nothing on their part is left undone.

QUESTIONS.

_____

  1. Is it right and proper for white preachers to preach to the colored people?

Answer. — Jesus said to his disciples, “Go ye therefore and teach all nations.” He did not say for them to preach to the white people alone, or to the colored people, or to one nation, but to ALL NATIONS. And we find that on the day of Pentecost the preachers were all Galileans, but they preached to almost a score of different nations, (Acts i. 1—13) and these nations were composed of white and colored races. We do not remember having ever read in the Bible where the Lord ever changed this commission. He gives the same spirit to a colored person that he does to the whites, and makes them all one in Christ Jesus. The Lord is no respecter of persons in regard to salvation work, all have to meet the conditions of his word. And “whosoever will may come.” If the Lord sends a white preacher to preach to colored people it will be right and proper.

  1. When an invalid is so afflicted that baptism by immersion is out of question, what must be done?

Answer. — God requires no impossibilities of anyone. In such a case He will accept the will for the deed, until they become able to be baptized, then he requires the deed to be performed. We have known invalids being carried into the water and baptized, and God honored the obedience by giving them a touch of his healing power and they were made whole, and their afflictions removed by the mighty power of God.

Dear Brethren: The grove meeting at this place closed last night with good results. Sunday three were buried with Christ in the symbolic grave, after which we had a precious ordinance meeting. During the meeting there were five consecrations for justification and six for entire sanctification. Several attended the meeting from Anderson. Two sisters from that place consecrated during the meeting and renounced their sects, the Methodist and Heavenly Recruits. They desire some one in the near future to hold meeting there. Bro. High with several others from Curtisville attended the meeting. Bro. H. C. Wickersham was in attendance most of the time, also his wife during the whole meeting. Both of them were much used of the Lord, also Bro. Kaumeyer from Canada. We feel led to the East, so any one living between here and Pa. desiring meeting, please notify us. Direct to Grand Junction, Mich.

Dear Saints of God: May God bless you all. The Big Creek camp meeting closed Aug. 27. Bro. Bolds and family were with us the first week of the meeting. It was the first evening light holiness camp meeting that had ever been held in that part, and owing to mixed elements of professed holiness teaching, the visible results we might say, hardly reached our expectation, yet the meeting was a success, several being saved. Methodist holiness, “Good Way ism” and anti-ordinance all had to be met and refuted by the Word. Many of those professing to be sanctified wholly, used tobacco and drank their coffee, and some of them claimed it was necessary in some cases to resent evil by carnal means. But God is raising up a church here that loves the whole word of God. Yours in Christ.

Dearly Beloved in the Lord: May grace, mercy and peace be unto all Israel ever more. Amen. The camp meeting at Fenwick, Ont. was really refreshing to our souls, because of the glorious liberty of the Spirit given to us, and for the salvation of souls and sanctification of believers. Truly we felt the force of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, 4th chapter, 11 and 12 verses. Surely God sets the apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers in the body for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ. A few sectarians broke loose from the bands and straps and came into the one fold. Four were buried with Christ in baptism. On Saturday, the 2d, Bro. S. E. Birdsall and Bro. David Moyer were ordained as ministers to preach the gospel, and Bro. Wm. Thomas was ordained deacon for the church at Fenwick. After the close of the camp meeting Sept. 3 we held meeting Monday and Tuesday at Font Hill; the people were very attentive and orderly all through both meetings. Many calls came in for meetings at different places. Some companies ought to go to Canada to spread the gospel in the evening light. Also I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Who will say, Here am I send me. Go ye therefore. Yours in much love,

A. B. Palmer and S. L. Speck.

meeting. From there wife and I went to Era. The first Sabbath in Aug., there were five buried with Christ in baptism, after which Brother and Sister Murphy joined us. We went to Coy’s, staid over Sabbath, there were two professions. While there we stopped at Wade Station: had a few services. One stepped out into the evening light and was baptized. Then wife, daughter, myself and Bro. Murphy on the 19th of Aug. came to this place where the Good Ways were holding tabernacle meeting. We did not know it till we were near the place. So we moved out to the school house near by and began in the name of Jesus to give the truth to the people. The truth found its way to the hearts of the people. Some seven or eight professions, while some that rejected were cut off. For two weeks we have been pouring forth the truth to large crowds of people and have wonderful good order. We closed last night with a precious ordinance meeting. Twelve dear ones look part in washing each other’s feet. Praises of God rang out from the happy throng. To night we will go seven miles to a school house in Arkansas for a few services. From there we go to Frisco, Ark., the Lord willing. May God bless and keep all the dear saints true. Pray for us. Dear Brethren: The Lord bless you all. As it has been some time since I wrote to the TRUMPET, I feel it would be to the glory of God to write my testimony. I have been engaged in the Master’s service almost all the summer. We can report victory over the enemy. Glory to Jesus for victory just now! The Lord has given us some very precious meetings this summer. We had a precious time when we were at Richardson, Tex. with Bro. Slate and family, who are wonderfully saved in the Lord. Our last meeting closed last Sunday night out in the country in what is called the Arkansas neighborhood. There we had a wonderful meeting. About twelve were saved; two backsliders came home to Zion; nine were buried with the Lord in baptism. Oh may God ever bless and keep them true. Pear ones, pray much for me. The Christian people here in this town have given me their house to preach in. If the Lord wills we will soon preach in this town. Pray much for me. He saves me soul and body, and keeps me from sin. He is my physician when I am sick; he is my all in all. The people love the truth here in Texas. Oh may the Lord send some one here to help us to preach the word. Would be glad if Bro. Bradley or Bro. Creel, or Bro. J. Cole could come here to Forney if the Lord wills. I am going to Mississippi in December. Want to meet the saints at Watkinsville, Ellisville, Edinburgh, etc. Pear ones, pray much for the work here in Texas, for I have much to bear. From your humble brother in the Master’s service,

Dear Brethren in Christ: May the grace of God ever abound in your souls. After an absence of five weeks it is again my privilege to meet the dear ones at home whom I found busy at work for the Master and happy in the love of Jesus. Truly the dear Lord had marked out the way and ordered my steps as was most to his glory. During the six camp meetings visited in that time we were permitted to witness the salvation of many souls. Evil spirits were cast out of some, and others were healed of various diseases by the power of God.

From Neosha Falls, Kan., I went to the camp meeting at Vichy, Mo. where quite a number of the children of God had assembled, and together with a number of his faithful ministers were enjoying a blessed season of heavenly showers from the hand of the Lord. There was much to do at this place but the truth of God has won many hearts and the Ozark mountains were made to resound with praises of God, notwithstanding the many snares and deceptions Satan has devised throughout that country to deceive souls. May God bless the dear ones at that place and keep them filled with the Spirit. Our next meeting was at Arkansas City, where we were permitted to meet with many more of the true children of God and also many companies of his faithful workers who did not fail to declare the whole counsel of God, and were true to souls. There were a number of consecrations and the outlook for a good work to be done, as the meeting was to continue several days.

Dear Saints of God: The Vichy camp meeting closed the 3d with a precious victory on the Lord’s side. God manifested his power during the entire meeting. Quite a number were brought to God and saved from their sins. Bro. J. W. Byers arrived on the camp ground the first day of the meeting. God blessed him in giving some very precious lesson to the people, and we are glad to say that the saints were greatly benefited by his preaching. On the 5th day of the meeting our souls rejoiced at the coming of dear Bro. E. E. Byrum; the Lord used him during his short stay, He gave some very precious lessons on faith and divine healing. Bro. Byers went from Vichy to the camp meeting at Arkansas City, Kan. God bless him in his labors wherever he goes. Bro. Bixler and wife were present at the meeting. God is blessing their labors for him. The meeting was largely attended on Sundays and at nights. Many shouts of praise ascended the throne because of the mighty work God Avas doing. Quite a number applied to the great Physician and were made whole. Praise our God! Twelve children of God followed the Lord in the sacred ordinance of baptism. On Saturday evening we enjoyed a most precious ordinance meeting: eighty of God’s children humbly participated. We were happy in obeying God. Truly the windows of heaven were opened and we received a wonderful blessing. Hallelujah! We are glad to say that the saints at that place are left in better condition than ever before We pray God to keep them true. Our next meeting will begin the 15th of Sept., nine miles from this place. Our address will be Brownstown for the next thee months. We humbly ask your prayers that God will use us to his own glory. Yours in the gospel work,

Geo. E. Bolds and family.

Dear Saints of God, Greeting: We are praising God for complete victory over all the power of the enemy. After the Center Point meeting we went to Kingston, Mo., where we had a precious meeting in the name of the Lord. A few consecrations were made, and one poor soul delivered of devils. The meeting was one grand victory! Near the close of the meeting, we wended our way to a small stream, where we had the privilege of burying four precious souls in baptism, which scene was witnessed by the Holy Spirit. From there we attended the Granby camp meeting, after which we returned to our home at Carthage, where we had a very precious meeting with the saints and with our loved ones. A few consecrations were made and the church was much strengthened. Bro. Warner met with us a few times and was used of God in building up Zion. Oh how our soul feasted on the word as it Avas presented in all its purity. We held a few street meetings, and many earnest souls gathered to hear the truth, of whom were many of my former friends. There was quite an opening for a meeting in the main part of the town. Oh how we longed to get the pure gospel to them, but God was hastening us to other places, and Ave closed the meeting Aug. 13, bade all good by, and on the 15th left our dear parents and brothers and sisters and went to Neosho Falls, there held the grove meeting, which was a glorious feast to our soul to meet many of the dear saints of the west. There were only a few consecrations. We closed the meetings, with real victory on the Lord’s side. There was an immense crowd present and it being a grove meeting, good order prevailed and we know the word will bring forth fruit in the near future. Oh the West needs many good straight workers. We left Neosho Falls, for Arkansas City, which place we reached Sept. 5, found Sister Cole and company and others busy working for God, and as our company had just arrived, we found plenty to do for Jesus. But while there we had the call from God to go to England. Some time ago God gave me a very definite call to foreign fields, and expected the call to be accompanied by a send ere long. So while there we received word from leaven that we should go, so we left the dear company that we had loved so much, and all the dear saints and are at this place getting ready to sail. So we say farewell and the God of all comfort, grace and love be with you all. Amen. Faithfully your sister separated unto the gospel,

Dear Saints, Greeting: I feel led to report to the dear readers of the TRUMPET about the work in this country. We arrived here July 12, found Bro. Henry much rejoiced in our coming to join in the work. Also a good home open to receive us, for which we were very thankful after our long voyage across the sea. We went forward in the name of Jesus, laying judgment to the line and righteousness to the plummet, and the hail of God’s word sweeping away the refuge of lies, and the Spirit of God overflooding the hiding places, and honest souls being delivered from sin. Others who were justified, being convinced by the word, of the darkness of sectism and that there were no schisms in the body of Christ, have got sanctified, which breaks down all partition walls, and God’s people all flow together, for which we do praise God. There is quite a little church established in this place; some have not got the fulness yet. There were eight followed the Lord in baptism and others soon to follow in that ordinance. The word of God is also being fulfilled in the casting out of devils and healing the sick. Several have applied for healing according to James v. 14, 15, and have been gloriously healed, and God still continues to manifest his power in the meetings, and souls are getting saved. We expect the way to open up soon for the gospel in other places. We held one week’s meeting in Warrington, a town about twenty miles from here with good results. Two got sanctified and one dear sister made her escape out of sectism. Others were very much in favor of the truth. We expect to go back soon and think we shall reap a harvest for the Lord, as there are many honest souls in that place. There is much work to be done in this country. Truly the harvest is great and the laborers few. We are praying God to send forth the heralds he has laid his hand upon to come to this place and other countries, as we very much feel the need of this reformation going to all nations. For to day the Gentiles are rejecting the Holy Ghost just the same as the Jews rejected Jesus Christ when he was on this earth. I do feel encouraged to work for God and the rescuing of perishing souls. If many of the dear saints could see the sin and the degradation there is in this world they would not be resting at ease in their homes with their plenty and abundance of this world’s good, while millions of their fellow men are void of the necessaries of life and the blessings of . hearing the gospel. Oh dear ones, wake up to the signs of the times, and ask God, What can I do to help rescue souls? I mean by the assisting grace of God to obey the scripture in 2 Tim. ii. 3-10, Endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. Also, therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sake, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. Pray for us and the work in this place, that we may not look back but ever press forward and at last win the prize that lieth at the end of the race. We do praise God for sending Bro. Daugherty to this country, whom the Lord is using very much in executing the judgments that are written in the word. May God have his own way with all of us, is my prayer.

Your sister, justified and sanctified,

Hattie Rupert.

Dear Saints and Readers of the Trumpet: We are saved to the uttermost, and rejoicing in a perfect salvation. The way of the Lord is sweet to us and we love to do the Master’s bidding. Truly, “the pathway of the just is as a shining light, which shineth more and more until the perfect day.” And although we enter more and more, yet it is better on before, and the waves of glory still increase. O praise the Lord for this perfect and constant peace which we enjoy.

We did not report the Three Rivers meeting as we should have done. The meeting lasted five weeks and was a glorious success with a sweeping victory on the King’s side. Quite a number were gloriously saved; some brought out of Babylon. Believers were sanctified and sinners converted, backsliders reclaimed. Praise the Lord! Quite a number were baptized and took a decided stand for Jesus. We pray God to richly bless the church at Three Rivers, and may they always remain in peace and unity, is our prayer. Amen.

THE GRATIOT MEETING.

This glorious assembly of the saints was held two miles east and one-half mile north of St. Louis, Mich, on Bro. Walters’ farm, as he had donated four acres to the church for the purpose of meeting as long as they should want it for that purpose. So a large pavilion was erected which would seat nearly one thousand people; also quite a number of good- sized two-story tents so that all who came upon the grounds from a distant were freely provided for with food and lodging.

This was one of the most glorious assemblies of the saints that we were ever permitted to enjoy in our experience. The power and glory of God came down in such great showers and deluged the altar and the saved until it scattered all division and strife before it, and all of the deceived came together under the blood, and were cleansed, and received the Comforter. O praise the Lord! how the mighty Spirit of God worked upon the hearts of the people. Many who had claimed the grace of sanctification for a number of years saw that they came short of that grace and glory, confessed their condition, went down for the cleansing and sealing. O hallelujah! The Lord set his mark upon them and the glory shone out of their faces while they shouted their freedom. Well said the Psalmist, that the Lord “giveth wine that maketh glad the heart of man and oil to make his face to shine.” Bless the Lord, we saw this fulfilled here, while God’s presence was so wonderfully felt in this camp. O how our hearts melted to hear the deep confessions made by those who had been deceived by the enemy. But praise God, the works of Satan were exposed, his kingdom torn down, while these dear souls were set at liberty and felt the mighty Spirit of God upon them. O may God forever keep them free from all nets of the enemy hereafter, is our prayer. Our dear Bro. George Wilson of Morley, Mich, melted every heart in camp as he exposed the devil and confessed how the devil had deceived him, asked forgiveness of all saints, went down before God and was completely delivered and left the grounds praising God. Oh how our hearts flowed together in holy love! We pray God to ever bless this brother and may he ever keep his covenant which he has made, for truly we believe God has called him to work in the great harvest field.

During the meeting there were a great many who came to the altar who had never started to serve the Lord before, also a great number of those who had gone away from Father’s house and wasted Father’s property, but now they came weeping back and were received by Father, and he gave them the robe and ring amid much rejoicing in the house of the Lord. O I pray that they may take warning by their past experience, and remain obedient children in Father’s house. During the meeting there were one hundred and sixty- eight consecrations in all. At every service, with the exception of twice, the altar Avas filled with earnest seekers, nearly all of whom received a glorious experience. Upon each Sabbath day a great crowd gathered to both the morning and afternoon services, and although there was not seating-room for more than one-half of the people present, the order was good. People seemed to be very anxious to hear what God had to say out of his word regarding this glorious evening light. We pray God to bless the precious truth spoken to this people. Amen.

Upon Wednesday afternoon nearly the entire encampment went down to the river at St. Louis, where several hundred of the town people had already gathered to witnesss the services there. O what stillness reigned over this vast throng as they looked on in silent awe while the dear children of God went down into that watery grave, and were buried with Jesus in baptism, and came up again with the glory of God stamped upon their faces! We pray God to bless that service to the good of that vast throng for Jesus’ sake. Upon Saturday afternoon again many went to the water, and quite a number were buried with Jesus in baptism, after which all gathered in the large pavilion toward evening, while the sacred ordinances of feet washing and breaking bread were observed, there being nearly one hundred of the saints that took part. O how sacred and precious are those moments to our minds. Dear Lord, how we love to follow thy commands, Truly we say with John the beloved of the Lord, “they are not grievous.” We pray the Lord to richly bless and keep those dear saints with whom we parted at this meeting. Bro’s Michels, Wooden and Pike, also Sister Walters of St. Louis, were present during the meeting and administered the Word in power. God richly bless and keep these dear workers for Jesus’ sake. Amen. Your humble brother in Jesus,

W. B. Grover.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I feel led to write my testimony this evening. I was saved in the Granby camp meeting and sanctified. I was saved once before and was baptized, but went back into the world. Oh how sweet to know that Jesus will bring his wandering ones back into the fold! There are only five of the true saints of God here, and we are thirsting for more of his pure word. “I’ve no thirsting for life’s pleasures,

For I’ve found a richer treasure,
One that fadeth not away.”

Bless God for this salvation, that is free to all. I want all the saints to pray for my dear wife that the Lord may sanctify her soul. She has been seeking sanctification for some time but has not obtained it yet. Your brother sanctified,

Dear Saints of God: I feel led by the Spirit to testify through the Trumpet of the grace of God, for his glory. He gives us glorious soul victory and sweet peace. I cannot express it; it passes all understanding. Praise the Lord forever! It makes us so free in him; his yoke is so easy. O how we love to obey his holy commands! Thank the Lord, we are redeemed, bought back by the precious blood of Jesus, sanctified by the Holy Ghost as a definite second work of grace, and we belong to the Lord. We gave our all to him in consecration (Rom. xii. 1); he has accepted the living sacrifice and he fills our souls with perfect love, and we are happy all the day. I feel the invitation to go work in his vineyard to day. Pray for us, all ye saints, that God may have his way with us.

Dear Saints: May everlasting peace abide. Amen. While I glory, not of myself, but by grace, and give thanks to God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Elder Brother for a full salvation, I would not have you ignorant of what the Lord has done for me, and how he saved me by his grace. Thank God! I was a so called preacher of the Baptist sect, ordained from this man-made institution for the purpose of teaching Baptist faith, without any difference between us in the least. I was led out of Babylon, praise God, but did not know anything of a full salvation for a number of years, but went into business, and traveled on the road for six years, doing as the world does, until God saw fit to use me. He first stripped me of all this world’s goods, led me from my Ohio home to this great and wicked city, and here, praise his holy name, right among every work of the devil, he has saved me. I was led into a meeting on State St. one Sunday afternoon, conducted by Bro. Decker and his wife, saints of God. They were preaching “no sect,” and a full salvation. The word of truth went home to my heart. I began again to search the scriptures, but different from the way that I used to read them. I was now looking for light. I went back to the same place; had some talk this time with Sister Decker. During our conversation she saw me take a chew of tobacco, and gave me one of the Trumpet tracts on the tobacco sin. I read it, it opened my eyes. I began to seek for a clean heart, and thank God, to day I stand a redeemed man, saved by the blood of the Lamb, sanctified. O glory to God for what he has done for me! I am now preaching a full salvation every evening except Monday evenings in a tent, at the corner of 39th Street and Wabash Avenue. But the Mother of Harlots has got this city under her control, assisted by her children — sect Babylon — to such an extent that they will not hear the truth. God help. To the saints of God every where, I hereby announce that I am his to be used to his cause, both with pen and tongue, and pray God he may open the way so that I may travel to all parts, that the knowledge of the truth as it is in Christ Jesus may spread. Yours in Christ,

Dear Saints of God: I have been feeling that the Lord wanted me to write my testimony for some time, to tell the wonderful dealings of God with us. We are still praising his dear name for salvation and his keeping power, through the sorest of affliction, persecutions and trials; but he is able to bring us out more than conquerors, and I feel that the dear Lord is going to give us real victory over all the powers of darkness; for husband is improving as fast as could be expected, but can’t sit up any yet. But the people have been real good to us, and we praise the Lord for what the dear saints have sent in. It was thankfully received with all the glory to God, for it was a great benefit to us in our straightened condition, as it has been seven months since husband was burnt. We can praise the dear Lord for the salvation of our oldest daughter, who was permitted to attend the Granby, Mo. camp meeting and was sweetly saved in Jesus. Glory to his name! Sister Lena Shoffner and company stopped and called on us as they went through to Neosha Falls, which was a real feast to our souls; and we obeyed the word of God and they anointed husband with oil, laid on hands in prayer and our faith was greatly increased. We are only few in number here and have no meetings to go to. Oh we are so hungry for a real Holy Ghost meeting. Your sister saved in Jesus,

Dear Brethren and Sisters: I am glad that salvation is free. If it had not been free I would not have got any, for I am very poor in this world’s goods. But all glory to God I am saved from all sin. Praise our God! I can say that I am saved and sanctified wholly unto the Lord to do the will of God. I went to the Hollenberg, Kan. camp meeting, I learned many things. All glory to God! I came out of the world, or the Baptist sect, which is all the same. Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. So I just saw my condition, obeyed the command in 2 Cor. vi. 17, 18. — “Wherefore come out from among them and be ye separate saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing, and I will receive you; and will be a father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.” Well I know he is my Father and I cannot praise him enough for what he has done for me. He has cleansed me from the great tobacco sin, and from all foolish talking. O praise the dear Lord for salvation that saved me in this life! Pray for me. Your brother all on the altar,

Dear Saints in Christ: It is impressed upon my mind that I should write my testimony for the TRUMPET, and I know this is the Lord’s will, for he has proven it to me. I promised the Lord I would hereafter testify to holiness and not be ashamed or afraid, if he would only heal me, knowing that it would be the Lord’s will if he did heal me; and so he did. I have felt like a new person ever since. When I read Mrs. J. E. Courtney’s testimony it helped me wonderfully. I have been seeking sanctification for about seven months, and have thought sometimes before, that I was sanctified, but other thoughts would come up, saying I had too much foolishnesss and would feel burdened at times, which caused me to think so many times the Lord had forsaken me. Therefore I could not say with truth I was sanctified; but I can say now as I have never said before that Jesus saves me from all sin. Praise his name forever! Now I realize those thoughts were only trials. Now I leave foolishness and all in the hands of the Lord, for I have tried to quit it all myself in my own weak way, and could not. Now I trust it all to the Lord which is my only help and strength. Pray for me, dear saints. I need your prayers to help me to stand firm on the solid rock; and also pray for my husband.

Dear Saints of God: I am happy to say that I have victory over the world, the flesh and the devil. I can praise God that I am saved, and I know it and the devil knows it, but glory to God, I feel that a wall of salvation is around me and it is devil proof I am free from Babylon. I will give a little of my past experience in regard to salvation. It may be that some poor souls are in the fix that I was in, and I praise God that I got out of the bondage of the devil. When I heard the evening light and the standard was lifted up I soon saw I was not what I could have been; yet I had been converted about eight years and had lived the best that I thought I could, yet I was like most of Babylon’s people, I thought it was honor to repent every day and I seemed to praise myself for repenting, thinking it was an honor to God When I heard the pure gospel preached I saw my daily repentance was not a Bible repentance. When I went out to Babylon, about the first I heard was, some good brother as I thought would get down to pray, and about the first thing he would say was, “Lord forgive our sins,” and I thought that was all right. Lord God help people to see that he that committeth sin is of the devil. 1 Jno. iii. 8. Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not. John iii. 6. I am sorry to say that I was a backslider and did not seem to know it. When I heard sanctification preached I saw that I was not on the standard; and I set out to seek sanctification. I soon saw that I was after the wrong work of grace; so then I got down on my knees and repented of my sins, and I got a clear conscience. So afterwards I got sanctified by faith. Glory to God! I stand redeemed by the blood of Jesus. From your brother saved and sanctified,

Dear Trumpet Readers: I wish to add my testimony, and by the grace of God will make an open confession through the GOSPEL TRUMPET, and let it give the people a warning sound when they hear God’s voice whispering, and if it does not come in whispering tone it will come in thundering tone. Now it is weight years since I was saved and wholly sanctified by a second work of grace, and was called to preach the gospel, and not of my will, but my heavenly Father’s will. I strove against the Spirit for about six months and finally I yielded, with a grand blessing. Then God set me at work and gave me what he wanted me to preach. He had led me in mysterious ways to manifest his power. He also showed me the evil in the sects and called me out of them; then I was free indeed. Praise God for evermore! Now the battle commenced with me. Some three years ago my father died, leaving a will, and in that will it was found recorded that I was to be administrator of that will. Now the Lord spoke plain to me through his word and Spirit, and said I should not, that it would cause trouble; and I am sorry to say that I was persuaded of man and yielded; and through disobedience great afflictions were brought upon me, so that no one but myself and family and God know what I have suffered with epileptic spasms. I have not been able to preach much since then, and I truly have sorrowed with godly sorrow, and bitterly repented and have the witness of God that I am his child. O blessed be the name of the Lord, which is a strong tower, a rock and a sure foundation, my shield and hiding place. Praise ye the Lord! Now I must confess that I have been healed a number of times, but. for some reason I cannot retain it. I know that an open confession is good for the soul. I have given up the settling up of the will and all worldly conformity, and am ready to do the will of God only from henceforth. Now in the name of Jesus I would ask all the dear saints who read this to pray earnestly for me, that the Lord may reinstate me in the healing of my mind, that I may go out and preach the unadulderated word of God to this dying world. Oh I see so much how the devil is trying to lay traps and snares to deceive God’s little ones. But nothing shall be able to pluck us out of out heavenly Father’s hands. I know that God has all power both in heaven and in earth, and I believe that God will give me the right use of my mind and a strong body, and not for anything only for his glory. Now may the grace of God be with you henceforth and forever! From your brother in the body of Christ,

David J. Lytle.

Dear Readers of the Gospel Trumpet: In the name of Jesus I can testify as a witness of the saving power of Jesus. I was brought up under the teaching of that abominable harlot Romanism, in ignorance and superstition, prejudice and idolatry. And I did believe it all right as a little boy, to answer the priest in Latin in so-called prayer, and hand up the wine and water, and carry the book from one side to the other, and ring the bell; and as I grew to be a young man, it suited me very well to go with my company, out of church into the dancing hall or drinking saloon, or playing room, after having been reading some formal prayer in the prayerbook. Once in a while I would go to confession to the priest; and to do some penance. I praise the Lord for the gospel which did shine as a light in my heart. Glory to his name! He is the way in which I stand; he it is in whom I live and have my being. I accepted his truth after entering in the service in 1863. Praise the Lord! But I am sorry to say that when I came home from the war I became worldly; all my good desires did not stand; my old desires to have some of this world’s goods came back, but left a little spark in my heart, and sometimes during revival time, it would burst out into a flame. The Lord put me in the fiery furnace of affliction, and brought me back to his loving heart, and fashioned me to his own will. Praise the Lord forever! Sometimes I could not understand his guidance, but it was always to my best, and under many afflictions he has been my healer. He has converted me and cleansed me through his precious blood, and is guiding me, and preserving me, and has healed me at different times. I have been very sick this spring. I got acquainted with some of the saints, and as we now have a Trumpet to read, I found the advertisement of the camp meeting at Topeka. I went to Topeka, but took sick again. After struggling for a couple of days because I did not want to come publicly before the elders of the church, I found it was God’s will for me to do so. While the brethren prayed over me, and anointed me in the name of the Lord, and laid their hands on my head, Glory to His name, there was an electric shock going through my body, and all my misery and pain and bad feeling went away. I praise the Lord, for such a complete and loving Savior, who has compassion and heals all our diseases. Pray for me, that I may be strong, while I have to stand amidst infidels and scorners. Your unworthy brother,

Dear Saints of God: I feel it would be to the glory of God to write my testimony. I was raised up in the Baptist sect. When quite young I united with them. I lived as they all live, and did the best I could with what light I had on the scripture, but never felt so happy as some professed to be. I was telling an old Baptist minister about how I felt. He says, My sister, what better do you want? and at the same time I was a sinner. Oh may God open the eyes of the blind! I went to Chautauqua Co., Kan. in 1890. There I first heard the true light preached. I thought they had a different Bible from mine. I had been taught that all saints were in heaven and that there are none here but what sinned. I went to the Baptist meeting. There were none humbled themselves enough to kneel in prayer. I thought they were about as cold as I was, and know, had no salvation, but they had me drunk on their sect wine. The saints held a meeting at that place. I attended the meeting; I felt that I was a sinner; went to the altar, was saved, and presented my body a living sacrifice unto God. He accepted the gift and sanctified me wholly. Praise his name! I walked in this glorious way but a short time, got my eyes off the Lord and fell. I went to the Lord and repented and he saved me. Praise his name! Now I have been sick since May 1st. I was first taken with LaGrippe; it affected my throat. I wrote a notice to the Trumpet Office asking all God’s saints to pray for my healing on July 17th. My notice did not reach the Office in time for publication, but the saints at the Office granted my request, and I felt the blessing of God’s healing power. I got up, dressed myself, rode five miles to visit a friend, sat up all day and ate a hearty dinner. I had kept my bed most of the time for the last month and had eaten scarcely anything. On the 20th my husband and I went a distance of seventeen miles to a neighboring town in a spring wagon. I took care of my baby part of the way, feeling well when we arrived there; but here the devil had his trap set for me. I met a lady that I was acquainted with. The first she said was that I had consumption and that I must have a doctor to examine my lungs. I told her my lungs did not hurt me; but she kept insisting until I gave my consent without taking it to the Lord. I sat down and he examined my lungs and throat. He said my lungs were not affected, but my throat would need some very strong medicine. He insisted that I should come to his office at once to take treatment. Now I had taken my case out of the Lord’s hands and was consulting a doctor, after I had been healed by His mighty power. But I suffered for it; when we got home I didn’t feel so well; grew gradually worse until the third day I was bedfast. My old disease returned and new ones with it. I cried mightily to the Lord and he heard me. I am trusting the Lord for my healing. Praise his holy name! I do praise God that I am free from all sects and am hungering for the pure gospel. I do ask all of God’s saints to pray that I may be healed and be able to attend the camp meeting this fall if it be his holy will. If any of God’s true ministers should be passing this way west on the Sante Fe road, would be pleased to have them stop. From your saved sister, but not sanctified,

Annie Holmes.
