Labor.

“Son go work to-day in my vinyard.” – Matt. 21:28.

With its long thought my toiling brain was weary,
My pen held idly at the close of day,
Without, the wind was shrill, the eve was dreary,
As in the solitude I knelt to pray.

For all my toil had seemed but thankless labor,
My efforts wasted, made for others good;
My earnest words to worldly friends or neighbor
Seemed all in vain, or poorly understood.

And so I knelt, feeling so weak and lowly,
Feeling how thankless had my life-work been,
Praying to God the Sinless and Most Holy,
To give me strength, and keep me pure within.

And then it seemed that from some unseen spirit —
Some gentle presence — came the words to me:
“Thy prayer is selfish, thou no crown dost merit,
’Tis thine own sorrows that have troubled thee.

“While all around thee groan the sick and dying,
On every hand are sad weary eyes.
Up, then, to labor; be not id’ly crying,
For love of self hath prompted all thy cries”

“Lift up the bowed, undo the heavy burden,
Feeding the hungry, bread sent down from God,
Repeat the story of His love and pardon,
And scatter flowers where weary feet have trod.”

“Nor weakly bow in thine own desolation,
Brooding o’er thine own sorrows and thy loss,
But follow Him who trod for thy salvation,
The winepress lone, and died upon the Cross.”

“All, all around one souls in darkness lying,
Grieve not, thy joys from out thy path are riven;
Go with the name of Jesus to the dying,
And thou shalt find a rich reward in heaven.”

The sweet voice ceased, the silence was unbroken;
Without, the wind and darkness covered all,
But in my spirit still remains the token
That I must labor at the Master’s call.

Now, not for self I ask for life-ways pleasant,
Not for myself to wear loves diadem;
For souls unsaved with me are ever present,
My labor and my prayers are now for them.

The Snow.

“He giveth snow like wool: He scattereth the hoar frost like ashes.” — Psa 147:16. “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be made white as snow. — Isa. 1:18.

How beautiful the snow-flakes!
With heaven’s brightness blent,
Divine the hand that wrought them;
And hath them lustre, lent;
Their peaceful angel footsteps,
Fall on the earth “like wool,”
Enfolding it in whiteness,
So soft and wonderful.

Thy rapid, white winged passage,
Down through ether’l space,
To nether world, all sin-girt,
Bears messages of grace —
Thy light from Father’s window,* *see Jas.1:19.
Both welcome and sublime,
Into our heart flows gently —
Its smiles our lives refine.

Thy purity not earth-born,
Inclines our minds above;
Inviting us to Jesus,
Who fills us with His love
In streams of joy and gladness,
From heaven’s dome let down,
Thy charms deep in our bosom,
Ascribe to Christ, renown.

O, beaut’ous, beaut’ous snow-flakes,
Thy MAKER WE ADORE;
For He came down to save us,
We’ll PRAISE HIM EVERMORE.
Dear Lord, Thy gifts, so precious,
With rad’ant splendor glow —
Partaking of THY nature,
WE’RE “WHITER than” the “snow.” [Psa 51:9.

Who was Melchisedec?

Please answer in the TRUMPET:

Thomas Raker

ANSWER.

He seems to have been a distinguished character, yet has but a very short History. It is all summed up in the following Scripture.

Gen. 14:18—20. Psalms. 110:4. Heb, 5:6-10. 6; 20. 7:1-17.

By the above passages in Gen. we see he lived in this world 1913 years before Christ. The primitive name of Jerusalem was Salem, which means peace, He was both king and priest in Salem which made him a very striking type of Christ. Melchisedec was not made priest through natural descent from his parents neither Christ, not being of the Aaronic tribe, Hence the former was typical of the latter. Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life.” etc. Heb. 7:3. Simply means that his priesthood was not derived from Father and Mother, nor was it limited to a certain age and period of years like the Levitical, see 7:6. Hence he was continuously a priest, being therefore a perfect figure of Christ, continuous priesthood.

MUST WE SIN?

__________

SECOND CONVERSATION.

>:|:+:|:<

BRO. LIGHT. Good morning Bro. Foggy, how do you do to-day?

BRO. F. I am well as usual, how are you?

BRO. L. Thank the Lord, I can say I am well and saved soul and body. I thought I would call and see how you succeeded in finding that Scripture.

BRO. F. Well I must confess I could not find just what I looked for; but this text comes pretty near to it: “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” — 1 Jno. 1:8.

BRO. L. There is quite a difference between this and your supposed scriptures. Notice John does not say, if any man says he sinneth not he is a liar, “But if we say that we have no sin we deceive ourselves” etc. Now let us see just who are meant by the pronoun “we.” Who does he write this to? Ans. “I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his names sake.” — 1 Jno. 2:12. So he simply means young converts whose sins were forgiven, but who were not yet wholly sanctified. Now let ns notice what the special object of this epistle was. It is thus announced, “That ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son.” 1 Jno. 1:3. “And these things write we unto you that your joy may be full.” — ver. 4. “My little children these things write I unto you that ye sin not.” — 1 Jno. 2:1. We see the Apostle wrote this epistle for the purpose of teaching them the glorious fulness of joy he enjoyed, so that they also would have fellowship with him. And one object of this higher grace was that they “might know how to possess their vessels in sanctification and honor,” and “sin not.” Would the “Beloved Apostle” write a letter for the purpose of advancing young disciples to a plain where they would not sin, and in the same letter tell them that no one ever attained unto it? Nay, but he shows these little children just how to obtain this second grace of entire cleansing.

“But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” — 1 Jno. 1:7.

In the next verse, he simply refutes the idea that a person is made perfectly pure in their justification, “If we say we — namely “you little children” — have no sin we deceive ourselves.” Of course they were not yet purged from inbred sin, or else they would already have had the “fulness,” and perfect fellowship he wished to teach them. After thus admonishing them not to think themselves free from inbred sin in their first experience of grace, he tells them in the next verse: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 Jno. 1:9.

This makes it all plain. The 7th and 9th verses positvely teach that the blood of Jesus Christ, “cleanseth. us from all sin,” and from “all unrighteousness,” if the young convert will but confess his need of it; while the intervening verse, simply guards “little children,” from saying that they “have no sin;” prior to this all-cleansing work of grace.

The tenth verse refutes another false position, namely, that they never have sinned. Such an assumption makes God a liar; because both facts and His Word declare “we all have sinned.”

BRO. F. Indeed! I am compelled to think that John did not mean to say in that 8th. verse that no body can be free from sin, when in the verses just before and after, that the blood of Jesus Christ “cleanseth us from all sin,” and “from all unrighteousness.”

BRO. L. You are right in that conclusion; besides let us read farther on in the same epistle. In the 2nd chapter and. 6th verse he says: “He that saith he abideih in Him ought himself also so to walk, even as He walked.”

In 1 Jno. 3:2, 3. he says; “Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is. And every man that hath this hope, in him purifieth himself, even as He is pure.”

Surely the inspired Apostle is very far from teaching that we must all be sinners in this life, when he commands us to walk even as Christ did, and declares that we shall be like Him when He comes, even “pure as He is.” But he does not stop here.

“And ye know that He was manifested to take away our sins; and in Him is no sin. Whosoever abideth in Him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen Him, neither known Him. Little children let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous. He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested that He might destroy the works of the devil. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in Him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil.” — 1 Jno. 3:5—10.

This does not sound much like the false saving: “If any man says he lives without sin he is a liar,” does it Bro. Foggy?

BRO. F. Well I must say it makes out quite a different case.

BRO. L. It is truly very strong language, but it is the very Word of God. The man of God is righteous even as He is righteous who was manifest to take away our sins; and in Him is no sin at all. It tells us that, “Whosoever abideth in Him (Christ) sinneth not, and whosoever sinneth hath not seen Him, neither known Him.” This is an awful fact when we remember that it is written that Christ will “come in flaming fire taking vengeance on all that know Him not. That surely includes all who practice sin. And in this very thing we are told “the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil.” Namely in that the first class do not sin, and the latter do. And the Apostle is very sure he is not mistaken in this matter, for in chapter 5: verse 18, he emphatically reaffirms it: “We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not.” Also in 4:17 he says: “Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as life is; so are we in this world.” So unless we are like Christ in perfect love, we will not have boldness to stand in the day of judgment

BRO. F. I do say it seems awful. I never saw it in that light before. But while I was hunting the Bible through I found some other texts that seem to teach that no one can live without sin in this world.

BRO. L. Well let us have them.

BRO. F. The first is in 1 Kings 8:46, and reads as follows: “For there is no man that sinneth not.” The next is this: “Who can say I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin.” — Prov. 20:9.

BRO. L. Certainly no person can say, he has made his own heart clean; for it takes the blood of Christ to cleanse our hearts, by the sanctifying power of the Spirit. Only Christ can save from sin, but have you any other texts!

BRO. F. Yes, here is one more that is very strong: “For there is not a just man upon earth that doeth good and sinneth not.” — Eccl. 7:20. What can you say to this, I would like to know?

BRO. L. Truly this is a sweeping assertion. But I am not going to give up my salvation on account of these texts. I know the blood of Christ Jesus cleanseth me from all sin, and the power of God keeps me every moment. But now I wish to say that the Old Testament, as well as the new, teaches that men should, and did live free from sin, “perfect before God,” and did even “walk with God.” Therefore the above texts must be understood as simply teaching the universal fall and depravity of the human family, and that all men have more or less been sinners in their life time. They only show us where the fall has left the whole race of mankind, but make no allusion to the grace of God that lifts, and preserves the humble trusting soul above this low plain. Any other interpretation would ignore salvation, and conflict with the rest of the Bible. But, to give you all the advantage those texts can afford, let us suppose that in Solomon’s time there was no man that sinned not, “not a just person on earth that did good and sinned not;” we could allow all that and still sustain our position of freedom from all sin very easily.

BRO. F. I would like to know how.

BRO. L. Why brother we have but to open the Bible and read what God has done for the human family since Solomon’s day. Have you forgotten that we live in a far more favored dispensation and age of the world than he did? Did not the angels come down from heaven and pronounce “peace on earth and good will to men?” and anounce glad tidings of great joy unto all men,” because a Savior, Christ the Lord was born in the world? What was all that for if the world is no better off? Christ says: “I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in: darkness.” — Jno 12:46. “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” — Jno. 8:12. He “is the true light which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.” — Jno. 1:9. Can-not we avoid running into the slough’s and pits of sin now since light has come, far better than when “darkness covered the earth and gross darkness the people?” All through the Old Testament the present was looked forward too as the great dispensation of grace, mercy, and freedom, of holiness and victory over all sin; and shall we now fall short of holy men who walked with God in the dim ages of the past? The Jewish types but faintly pointed forward to the great sacrifice for sin on the cross. But now “Christ our passover is sacrificed for us,’ and “how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the Eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God.” — Heb, 9:14. “For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did.” — Heb. 7:19.

“By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better Testament.” — Heb. 7:22. “But now hath He obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also He is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.” — Heb. 8:6. “Now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.” — Heb. 9:26, Speaking of the ancient holy men, it is said: “And these all, having obtained a good report, through faith, received not the promise: God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.” — Heb. 12:39, 40.

All these scriptures show that God has provided infinitely better things for us than Solomon or any one else in his day ever knew; hence we can live more holy than they. The great “kindness and love of God toward man hath appeared” in these last days, yea the “Grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men.” See Titus 2. 12-14; 3:4-6.

The great salvation we now enjoy, the prophets never received, could not comprehend, and even the “Angels desired to look into” — 1 Peter 1:8-12. Jesus declares that John the Baptist was greater than the prophets, — in point of privilege, or advancement in light, — and yet he that is least in the Kingdom of heaven — since the outpouring of the Holy Spirit — is greater than John the Baptist.” That is he has a more perfect experience of salvation. See Luke 7:28. All these, and many other Scriptures teach us that we are living in the great day of Heaven’s highest blessings; the glorious time of redemption from all sin and the revelation of God’s love and power to constantly keep us pure and holy, and triumphant over all sin and the power of satan. Hence we have no excuse for sin at all. Thus saith the Lord “If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin; but now they have no cloak for their sin.” — Jno. 15:22. No cloak for your sin. “No excuse” in the margin. A salvation that is perfect, in all respects is offered us now, therefore we cannot weave a cloak out of the dark sayings of the Old Testament, and cover ourselves with it. Jesus is “able to save them to the uttermost that come to God by Him,” and we are “kept by the power of God through faith” free from all sin. So there is no cloak for sin now. No excuse for any man to commit the least sin. Even “where sin abounded grace did much more abound.” — Rom. 5:20. Jesus said to the man that was healed at the pool, “Sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.” — Jno. 5:14. To the woman He forgave, He said, “Go and sin no more.” — Jno. 8:11. Hear this call from Heaven, “Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God, and I speak this to your shame.” — 1 Cor. 15:34. Jesus says that “just persons need no repentance.” — Luke 15:7. If you ask why, the Psalmist will tell you, namely became “They also do no iniquity: they walk in His ways.” — Psa. 119:8. So you see Bro. Foggy that Jesus did not come into the world, to gather a Church of sinners, but to “redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto Himself a peculiar people,” without spot and blameless. And He is able thus to save and keep us holy in His sight,” Right in this sinful world.

BRO. F. Yes Bro. I confess I see it as I never have before.

Dearly Beloved Saints: — I praise the Lord for salvation full and free. I shall ever give God the glory for putting it in your heart and mind to write the article entitled “Wandering Stars.” It seemed to fit my case so well that I doubted that there was any mercy for me. I sought God earnestly to find out, and I praise God to-night that I am saved to the uttermost, The devil made me believe it was impossible for me. to praise God before all people, or where God,s Spirit dictated. So you see I believed the devil instead of God. Now I see in Jesus courage, strength and my all; for which I can never thank God enough. We are having meetings at Bro. Montgomery’s for a few days and nights. The Lord is with us and some are seeking to know more about this way. Pray for us that we may know what is that good and acceptable, and perfect will of God. Pleasing God in all things, doing the will of God from the heart. Praise the Lord for salvation full and free! My wife is saved also. Pray that God may keep us in His sweet will. Amen! Praise the Lord!

Dear Saints: — I will write a little that Jesus has done for me. I am willing to be the least of all his saints for he always hears me when I pray. I am standing on his Word which I know is sure as heaven. Rejoice with me in Jesus for he will come soon to gather the faithful home. Dear ones never neglect the knowing will of God; but be instant in season and out of season reprove, rebuke with all long suffering for the soul that sinneth it shall die. I ever said: be of good cheer. I have overcome the world through the merits of Jesus. This is a great field of labor; many souls needing light. The Lord is fitting us for the work; any one feeling the Lord leading them to come out here, come filled with His Spirit and He will care for all your wants. Amen, I am saved.

Dear Brethren: — I am sweetly saved in Jesus this evening. Praise God forever and ever! I never before felt so dead to the world. This world’s a wilderness of woe; this world is not my home. I am so glad that I am free; free from sin and confusion of sect Babylon. O how it makes my heart ache to see those that profess to be the children of God, and so proud and walking with the world; spending all their time and money for fine clothes, instead of spending it to honor and glorify God, and trying to keep poor souls from sinking down into hell. Shame on such cold heartless professors. May God have mercy on such deluded souls. Your sister saved, sanctified and tried.

And we will pay all expense of delivering the books, either by mail where only a few names are taken in one place, or by express to the agent, prepaid. A hundred and ninty dollars paper debt, and over another hundred type and other bills pressed our hearts with earnest prayer to the Lord. He said: “We are still saved and trusting in the Lord. I feel it my duty to send you some means, not knowing where God wants it used. I have confidence in God that He will direct you to use it to His glory.”

O let the saints of God keep their ears open to our Heavenly Father’s call for means. If you feel the Spirit stirring your hearts, remember that the Master has need of these things, which are all His. Amen!

THE LOW DOWN BROAD WAY.

—+o+—

POOR Isaiah Reed, is still “a reed shaken by the wind,” and getting deeper down in the mire and filth of this world. He publishes a professed holiness paper in Iowa. When he used to have some holiness light in him, he was cast out of his sect for teaching sanctification But when the Lord moved on in the order of His plan, and called His saints out of babylon, Reed did not stand the “grand holiness shock” he had predicted, but compromised with sectism, opposed the truth, and joined one of the worst pride cursed, and secrecy bound sects on earth, and now he sends out his circulars offering as a premium for every new subscriber, a newly invented “hand embroidering machine. Says “It is specially designed to work fine silk and other embrordiery threads.” And this professed holiness preacher in his gray hairs has actually added to his holiness business that of embroidery. He says, “We have samples of the beautiful work done on the hand embroiderer for sale. We will send A NICE LARGE ONE POST-PAID for 75cts.”

God pity the poor backslidden preachers and editors who still cary about in babylon their profession of holiness. Have such lost all good sense, as well as all spiritual light? How it must tickle the devil to see on the market street of Soul Cripple City a stand where these three articles are offered to the public, namely a worldly hooped tub, labeled, “The Highway,” containing holiness self reverence, advertizements, and the whole contents labelled HOLINESS, on one side of which is a stack of machines to make fine silk embroidery, and on the other side a pie of embroidred work offered for sale. O shame, shame, on such abominable mixture. Surely this highway is low down on the plane of the world.

__________

HIGH-PRIESTLY IGNORANCE.

—:‡:§:‡:—

A SECTISH, self-reverenced preacher by the name of J. E. Ervine, comes out with a mess of confusion against God’s free children in certain Canada papers, a few points of which we will weigh by the Word of God. He says, “The early christian Church was a sect organized by Christ and the apostles.” In this assertion he has either shown ignorance of the meaning of the word sect, or else in his lust for the friendship and applause of the corrupt schisms, idolatrous devotion to that god, he has willfully slandered the Church of Christ, and belied the Son of God. To prove this charge we appeal in the New Testament, and the Unabridged Dictionary. This word sect in every instance in the New Testament is from the Greek word Heresies. That word only occurs ten times in the New Testament. In the following sentences it is rendered sect in the common version.

“Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him, (which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation.” — Acts 5:17.

“But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, that it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.” — Acts 15:5.

“For we found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.” — Acts 24:5.

“Which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most straightest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.” — Acts 26:5.

“But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against.” — Acts 28:22.

It is transfered, without translation, with a mere English termination, in the following instances.

“But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets.” — Acts 24:14.

’’For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.” — 1 Cor. 11:19.

“Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies? — Gal. 5:20.

“But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.” — 2 Peter 2:1.

“A man that is a heretic, after the first and second admonition, reject.” — Titus 3:10.

In the 1st, 2nd and 4th instance, it is applied to the bigoted factions of the Jews, whose existence were a corruption of the Jewish religion, and not one of them was founded of God.

In the 7th 8th 9th and 10th instance the Word is used with regard to the idea of sects, schisms and parties in the religion of Christ, and the Church of God. And in each case such things as a so-called christian sect, is forbidden and abominated as the works of the flesh, and a “damnable” thing. In 1 Cor. 11:18, 19, the words “divisions” and “heresies,” are used interchangebly as meaning the same thing. And in the margin the word division is rendered “schism,” and the word “heresies,” is rendered “sects.” This makes the matter plain. A sect is a heresy, a schism, or cut off faction from a general body. In Galatians 5:20, “heresies’’ are declared to be the “works of the flesh,” and are classified with “adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, strife,” and all the rest of abominable works of the flesh, and the Apostle amphatically declares that “they which do such things shall not inherit the Kingdom of God.” In this instance the Emphatic Diaglott, translates the word heresies, “sects.” And this babylon priest Ervine would have us think that Christ was the organizer of one of these works of the flesh, which exclude men from the Kingdom of God. Says Ervine. “When the Jews at Rome said to Paul, ‘For as concerning this sect, it is everywhere spoken against.’ Paul tactile admitted the term “sect,” as applying to the whole body of christians at that time, without objection.” This assertion is without Scripture warrant, as any one call see by reading Acts 28:22, and context. Paul made no such an admission. There is simply nothing farther recorded of the conversation at that time. Had Paul’s reply been put on record, and he had taken no exceptions to the word sect, it might, wit it some show of consistence, have been construed into a tacil admission. To say that Paul confessed the “whole body of christians, a sect.” is simply ridiculous. Paul knew the meaning of the Greek language, he knew that sect meant a split off part, and to call the whole body a split oil fragment of the body is a senseless contradiction.

In Acts 21:14, Paul says; “After the way which they call heresy (sect) so worship I the God of my Fathers.” This language clearly implies that God’s saints did not call themselves a sect. Therefore Paul spake of that term as only applied to them by their enemies. There were already several sects of the Jew’s religion, and as the first Christians were principally Jews, it would be natural for the people who were ignorant of the Body of Christ, to think it was simply another Jewish faction arisen. Thus we see that no one but old blind Jews and modern Pharisees and hypocrites have the impudence and sectish ignorance to call God’s Church a sect, or heresy. God’s Word always defines the Church as the Body of Christ, the whole body, but a sect denotes a cut off part of fire general body, I would like for Mr. Ervine to answer this question: If the Church which Jesus founded was a sect, what was the whole? In other words, of what general body was Christ’s Church a split off faction? Not of the Jewish nation; for “He made of twain one new man,” a new body, including all who are saved of God, whether having been Jews or Gentiles, yea “one family in heaven and earth.” This sect apologizer Ervine tells us that Christ organized the first Christian sect, and each subsequent reformer organized another. So they were all equal with Christ, would be the natural inference. But, Mr. Ervine, will you please tell us what has become of the body that Jesus founded? Has it perished and become obsolete? If so, the “Gates of hell” have utterly prevailed against it, and Christ’s prediction that they should not prevail, was a failure. But if the Church He founded (not to say sect; for He is not the author of a heresy) is still in existence, pray tell us what necessity was there for men in later years to organize other bodies and call them churches? Did these modern sect founders conclude that the Church Christ founded was not practical, and that they were more wise than He, and could produce a better Church? One of three things is evident. Either the Church Jesus founded has ceased to exist, or it has proved defective, and is insufficient, or the late sects are rivals of the body of Christ, the Church, and abominable counterfeits upon the same. Neither of the first propositions no sane, God-fearing man dare assert, hence the latter conclusion is inevitable, and we defy all the wisdom of sect babylon to evade the premises and deduction.

Mr. Ervine says that the Lutheran reformation “was a sect movement.” Likewise the Wesleyan and all the rest. These statements are without foundation in history.

Page 3

Both Luther, Wesley, Fox, and others deplored the very existence of the sects of Christendom. Wesley was unwilling to organize another sect, and said there were already too many sects and divisions. Luther said about the same. It is a fact clearly seen in history that every effectual reformation in which God displayed His power, was an anti-sect movement, a stunning blow against all existing sects. But it is true that while they shook all sects of their time, and were opposed by all the sects, as destructive to their interest, these same reformers or their followers were not sufficiently delivered from sectarian education to resist the devil’s temptation to form another sect. And it is also true that from the time any true reformation was cooped into a sect enclosure its power, and glory, and purity, gradually disappeared, and ecclesiastical machinery making and tinkering, succeeded salvation power and holy living.

The honest way to refute error, is to take the doctrines, and deductions of false teachers, in fair quotations, and then overthrow them by the Word of God. This, our enemies never have attempted to do. We send out foom 3,000, to 5,000 papers semi-monthly, and many thousand tracts, all filled with Scriptures, principles, and deductions we conscientiously know to be the truth. At this the sect devotees rave at and pronounce it of the devil, and yet dare not take a whole paragraph, or scarcely a sentence of the same and attempt to refute it by the word of God.

But the enemies of God’s sacred truth always put it in a false and perverted light and many times wholly manufacture their own false ideal, ascribe it to the parties they oppose, and then fight the product of their own hypocritical imagination. According to this unscrupulous wresting of things, Mr. Ervine assumes that we renounce as of the devil, all the salvation work that has been wrought by men adhering to sects. This we never have done. We confess that God has, and yet does bless the earnest and sincere labors of men who are in organized seisms, and who are walking in all the light they have. God uses good, honest men in sects, but God forbids, abhors, and consequently does not use sects in the salvation of souls. Hence it is a fact that cannot be denied, that the more of Christ, and less of sect any man possesses, the more God can use him; it is equally true, that the more sectish men are the move abortive their religion.

Mr. Ervine says: “he must always have a thus saith the Lord, before he embraces any new faith.” In this same article he gives a certain sect the credit for his salvation; and lavishes upon that sect no small praise. Now I wonder where he finds a “thus saith the Lord’’ for a “Wesleyan Methodist church.” When he demanded Scriptures to sustain the “present truth” of certain brethren, he says “one got his Bible and read some passages from the Old Testament, and a few more from the book of Revelations about coming out of babylon.”

But the self-“Rev.” gentleman thought these insufficient to prove the point. Well Mr. Ervine, suppose you get your Bible and give us a few Scriptures, even out of the Old Testament, and Revelations, that set forth the Wesleyan Methodist church.” Bless your soul you cannot find Methodism even in the apocryphal writings much less anywhere in the Bible. Nor can you find any of the modern sects there, except by the general term of “mystic babylon.”

Webster’s Unabridged, defines sect thus, “To cut off, to separate,” “A part cut off,” a cutting.” “Specially, a denomination which dissents from an established church,” both sect, and section are from the same Latin root, “Sectism, to cut off, to separate.” Jesus did not produce a schism in an established religion. But founded His own Church, which is “one body in Christ Jesus,” and thank God is still extant on earth, and the only Church God’s Word recognizes. And all other so-called churches are counterfeits and frauds. In honor of Jesus the head of the body the Church, we must say this.

One point more. This sect lover says of such as have come out of her, “They live mainly by sheep stealing.” Well Jesus says,” my sheep hear my voice and they follow me.” The above complaint proves that God’s ministers who are out of babylon “speak the words of Christ.” It is also a proof that they are true shepherds of Christ, for His sheep will not follow a stranger This is also according to Rev. 18:4. God does not call the goats out of babylon, but says: “Come out of her my people.” He only calls out His own sheep, and His sheep hear His voice and obey. Amen!

NEWS FROM THE FIELD

—§-o-§—

WE had the happy privilege of visiting the saints once more in the vicinity of Beaver Dam Ind. a privilege that is always very refreshing to our hearts. We remained about two weeks holding meetings in the Hahn School- house, and in private houses. The powers of hell had been very busily engaged in subtle and pernicious plots fo attract the eyes of God’s children from Christ and over throw their souls. His evil works were exposed and rebuked in the name of Jesus Christ, and many who had become crippled and some backsliden, were restored by the grace of God, while a few who allowed the devil to puff their hearts up, refused admonition and went into outer darkness. Oh that God may deliver them from the snares of the devil. The last few meetings God was working powerfully on the hearts of the people, and from four to six came to the alter daily, and were saved of the Lord. The dear saints continued the meetings after we took our departure, and we hope to hear of many more souls being saved. As soon as the protracted services close there, a few of the Lords fire brands expect to set the battle in array over in Marshall, Co, and elsewhere. May the Lord give them a glorious victory and a harvest of souls. Dear Saints of God every where, are you improving the precious opportunities to work for God this winter? perishing souls are at stake in every direction, Who will help to save the lost? The time is short let us do what we can. The awful end is nigh, when mercy shall no longer plead and sudden destruction come upon all who are in sin.

Thank God, we find the publishing work moving on rapidly. The press running nearly every day, on either book work or the paper. The last issue of the Trumpet five thousand papers were published. The issues usually ran from three to four thousand. A brother who summed up the large meetings noticed in the Trumpet during the last season reports 25 grove meetings, 14 camp meetings, and several general assembly meetings. The work nearly doubles itself annually. But whether it spread fast or slow let every soul determine this, that it must only increase with the increase of God. Amen?

Urbana, Kan. Jan. 8 1890.

My Dear Brethren: — May the dear Lord bless you one and all. This leaves us all well and wonderfully saved from all sin. We are having meeting at or near Urbana and the Lord is giving real victory. Bless His name forever! O Hallelujah! souls are being delivered from the power of the enemy. Some who had been ensnared by the enemy have been reclaimed, and brought back to the Lord. O glory to Jesus? Bro Lundy, from Mo. is here with us and God is wonderfully using him in preaching the Word. Bro and sister Houghton, also, are with us. O that the Lord will awaken the people of this community and bring them into His precious fold. The Lord willing, I expect to start to Gresham Neb. and probably stop on my way and visit the Church at Table Rock. Let all the Saints pray for me. I remain your free Bro sanctified wholly.

Glory to Jesus.

West Liberty, Ohio Dec. 27. 1889.

Dear Brethren: — God bless you all with an abundance of grace at all times. We are happy to report to you this morning that we are fully saved in Jesus’ praise the Lord. We closed meeting at Mc.Key’s brick meeting house, about three miles north of West Liberty, last night after continuing about 13 days, during which time quite a number of souls were saved from their sins, by repenting of all their sins and making all wrongs right who then presented themselves a living sacrifice, and were purged from every impurity of their souls. Praise the Lord? here is a new field, but we find many souls who want to know the truth. We expect to commence meeting to night at Kennard station about 9 miles south east of here, and continue as long as the Lord wills. Pray that God will use us to the salvation of souls. Your Bro- fully redeemed by the precious blood,

Amen.

Mier Ind. Jan 2. 1890.

Dear Saints: — Grace mercy and peace be multiplied unto you abundantly through the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ Amen, We just closed meeting at this place last Sunday night with victory for Jesus. Meeting continued nearly three weeks during which time there were nine consecrations for pardon all which testified- that their sins were forgiven. Six consecrations for sanctification all of which testified to the fullness. Saturday before meeting closed we had meeting at my house after which nine were buried with Christ in baptism; all came up with shining faces and praises of God on their lips. Then on sunday night we observed the ordinance of feet washing and Lord’s supper, (twenty partook) which was a glorious feast to our souls. The last week of meeting being much fatigued in body we asked Father to send help which He did in the persons of dear Bro,s George Marsh, Joseph Courtney, H. C. Key, Enos, and sister Mary Key, all of Randolph, Co. which comforted our hearts and helped in the work. During the meeting here much prejudice was removed, and sectarians were convinced who said they were going to get free and assemble with the saints in our regular meetings. For seven weeks before the protracted meeting nearly every meeting there was some one saved. Four were clearly justified, six restored. Men and women up in years who had never been born again, were saved; some bad never belonged to any sect, or made any profession at all ‘the Church at this place is in good spiritual condition; being bound and knit together in love. Some remarkable cases of healing have been wrought here, through faith in Christ. We give God all the glory for all these things, knowing that Jesus has truly said without Me ye can do nothing.” We are only vessels for the Master’s use. Pray for us and the work at this place that we may be kept very humble and obedient to the faith of the Gospel. Your humble Bro. in the tribulation and patience of Jesus.

Elihu Key.

Bravo, Mich., Dec. 31, 1889.

To all the Family of God, Greeting: — I praise God this morning for a present experience of full salvation in my soul. Truly the Lord leadeth us by still waters, and in green pastures. The meeting closed at Hoppertown on Sunday evening with a glorious victory in our souls; although we found the little ones there very much depressed, and somewhat lacking in their souls, yet they all seemed to be honest, and willing to measure themselves by: “Thus saith the Lord.” So the result was, those who were lacking got down before God, who hath promised to supply all our needs, and by so doing they were soon united in the bonds of love and fellowship. Some whom the enemy had beguiled into mixing up with babylon, thinking that if they went to sect meetings, they would come to their meetings, found that it was the old trick of satan to beguile unstable souls. Oh dear ones for what purpose can we desire to mix up with the unfruitful works of darkness? In every instance that has come under our observation it has brought leanness to the souls of those who practiced it. God also witnessed to the truth in the conversion of quite a number of souls who had never seen the evening light before; also in removing prejudice from many that we hope to see come into the fold before long. The attendance was very good, considering the bad weather, and deep conviction rested upon many that would not yield to the influence of God’s Holy Spirit. May God bless them and help them to yet come to Christ. On Sabbath we went to the water and two were baptized according to divine command. After the baptizing we again met for the purpose of observing the sacred ordinances of the Lord’s house. About 24 were present to partake in the washing of the saint’s feet, and eating of the Lord’s supper. Bro. Henry Burch was ordained Elder of the Church at Hoppertown. May God bless and help him to be faithful and feed the flock over which the Holy Ghost hath made him overseer.

On Monday we came on to this place, and commenced meeting last evening at the School-house. This is a new place where the evening light has never been preached. In fact there are only two or three persons here that profess anything, so we have hopes that God will do a work here. There was good attendance for the first night of the meeting, and deep interest manifested. Dear ones, pray for us and the work at this place.

Your Bro. in Christ saved, sanctified and working in the vineyard of the Lord,

Henry C. Sharpnack.

Dearly Beloved Saints: — Mercy and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord. It seems the Lord’s leading that I should write to you how the Lord has been leading me the last few months. I started on Thanks-giving day with six of the dear saints from Girard to do the Lord,s work in Indiana as He should lead. We went in two carriages over very bad roads; we were seven days and a half on the road, but the Lord kept us sweetly saved and wonderfully sustained our bodies. We first went to Auburn Assembly meeting where we had a glorious communion with other dear saints. Father and mother Pepple being among the number, by whom we were kindly sustained; may the Lord reward them. From there we went 26 miles south of Fort Wayne where we held meetings over two weeks; from there we went to the home of sister Cook’s son who was a member of the Friends church, who readily obtained the use of their house of worship. The attendance was good from the first; and much interest manifested, when some became alarmed because the truth was taking hold of the people, and were afaid they would lose some of their members, so they said they would have to turn us out as they must have it to practice for a Christmas tree. Many were indignant at this and sister Cook’s son and several other members came out straight for God. And we said: “praise the Lord,” and went away blessed of God for our efforts there; we then went to a Christian Union house 3 miles from there and commenced meetings with good attendance, many of the friends following for there were many good honest souls among them who knew we preached the pure word of God. All went well until we preached the secret society and tobacco question. When satan became worried and rallied his forces against us so that they sent for their sect minister and he turned us out, but the power of God held satan in check so all could see how wonderfully God could work and could see the difference between believing and professing and possessing salvation. The Lord did so help to preach the truth, giving us perfect freedom. His name be praised! The leader of their class came out straight for God. The homes were then opened and we had some good meetings. And there is a good little church established and the whole community stirred. Brother Cook’s wife with others were gloriously saved. The Lord willing we shall go there again in the near future at their request. It was a glorious victory all the way through. To God be all the praise. May God ever keep them saved is my prayer. Amen! Your Bro. in Christ.

Auburn, Ind. Dec. 28, 1890.

Dear Saints of God: — We begun meetings in the name of the Lord Dec. 5 in Bro. Randolph’s neighborhood in the vicinity of Adrain Mich. The truth was preached in its parity, up to the standard and in love. Some said we were too strict and exacting, because we preached against socials, parties, pride, etc. O may God save their souls before too late and prepare them to meet him in peace. However there were about 5 consecrations; some for pardon, others for sanctification which separated them from babylon. They are free and rejoicing in the evening light. We thank God for the return and salvation of Bro. Corwin. O may God ever keep him. From there we went to Bro. Corwin’s neighborhood where we had a blessed time; 4 were buried with Christ in baptism. It was truly a Holy Ghost time; all felt and received the witness, and power of the spirit. In the evening we met and had a solemn meeting, and truly happy time during feet washing, and felt and realized the heavenly presence of our example, Jesus. Hallelujah! Bro. Jno. Randolph was chosen and ordained elder of the Church. Bro. Wm. A. Randolph having been called of God to the ministry, and had labored for the Lord, was ordained to to the ministry by the laying on of hands. O may God ever preserve and qualify him for every good word and work. We are here in the name of Jesus. The saints are being refreshed and conviction is upon the people. Praise the Lord! From here we go to Roanoke to begin meeting Jan 6. Pray for us and the work, that we have a rich harvest of souls. Your Bro. in Jesus.

Dear Brethren: — We are praising God for His great salvation which He has given to us; and many others are daily accepting it also. Praise the Lord! God has, been with us in mighty power since we came to this northern country and has many souls. Bless His mine! On Christmas we enjoyed a wonderful season with the Church at Wilson. During the day there were twelve souls who came forward and sought freedom, all claimed the witness of their acceptance of God. We praised God with a loud voice at the deliverance of some of the M. E. convicts, who had been held captive for a long season but who came forth from the darkness shouting and praising God for the light and freedom of salvation. Hallelujah! Babylon is raging, saints are shouting, and God is working. Bless His holy name! In the evening of Christmas day we observed the ordinance of God’s house, that of breaking bread and washing of the saints feet in which all took, part and thanked God for the privilege.

On New Years Day we came to this place, found the Church in unity and in a prosperous condition. We also observed the ordinances with the Church here which was a precious season to all. There were 31 who took part. We are continuing the meeting here, and shall as long a the Lord wills; God is working mightily and sinners are coming to God, backsliders are being reclaimed. There has been about 20 already, and we look for many more to follow. The Lord is on our side, blessed be the name of Israel Oar dear Bro. Sheldon is with us, whom the Lord is using mightily to exhort sinners to come to Jesus.

Pray for us that we may be kept humble and obedient servants to the Lord.

OBITUARIES.

FATHER. Chrisman near, Payne, Ohio, departed this life to be with Jesus, Dec. 1st 1889; Aged 79 years, 9 month and 18 days. Father Chrisman was among the first to accept the Gospel truth of the evening light in this place. He was sanctified wholly several years ago, and retained this glorious experience to t he end. A few years ago the Lord wonderfully healed him of dropsy, and at different times since he has been healed of the Lord of various complaints, He had an unshaken confidence and faith in God. During his last affliction of several weeks, in winch be never complained nor murmured, the saints often met at his home to worship God, in which he always took an active part, testifying and exhorting all the saints to faithfullness, telling us that the Bible (as he pointed to it) was his compass and never pointed wrong, nor mis-led him. He leaves a son and four daughters and many friends to mourn. Though he is missed in the assembly of the saints here he has joined that Part of Father’s family in Heaven. May the Lord bless the bereaved children, and may they seek the Lord while he may be found. The power and presence of the Lord was manifested and felt in the solemn funeral service. Our dear Bro. Wm L. Kilpatrick spoke the Word as the Spirit gave him utterance. God bless the undertaker who gave such interested attention to the Word.

Our Father now so sweetly rests
In his bright home with all the blest;
Prepare to meet him children dear,
In that bright, world so free from care.

Grandfather’s gone, grandchildren dear,
Remember what he said, while here,
Seek Jesus while you’re in your youth,
Give up your sins, serve Him in truth,

Children and grand-children all,
Will you hear the Spirit’s call.
Eternity is just at hand,
Get ready for the better Land.

Now is the time. The Word says now,
How shall you escape pray tell me how?
If you neglect salvation great,
O seek the Lord before too late.

J. N. Howard.

HEALED OF THE LORD

—:o:—

TO the glory of God I will tell of God’s wonderful love and power to us-ward. On the 9th, of Oct. I started for Galesburg C. M. 30 miles from home. Taking a very sick child with me, and leaving one sick at home. When we arrived at Galesburg we called the elders. Bro. Warner, Bro. Achor, and mother Smith laid on hands, and in answer to prayer she was healed of inflamation of the stomach. She was instantly healed and had not another pain. At the close of the camp-meeting we started for home. We found that God had also healed the one at home. But the affliction of the one healed at camp returned. I tried to hold on by faith, but she grew worse and suffered intense pain. We anointed her and prayed. She got easy for a while then suffered as much as ever. Then a physician was called, and she got better of that disease: inflamation of the stomach. But soon inflamation of the bowels took place; she suffered untold misery. Then she got better of that, but took Rheumatism. Another attack of inflamation, then neuralgia all through her body. So she suffered first one thing then another for one month. The last two weeks we gave her a great deal of morphine to relieve her awful sufferings. I do not think any one that saw her thought she would ever recover. I had no hopes. Well glory to Jesus, on the morning of the 16 of Nov. I felt impressed to quit the medicine and physician. I spoke of it and Bessie felt so too, she said she believed the Lord would heal her. I done so, left her in the hands of God, gave no more medicine About 3 in the after-noon she appeared much betters little later she saidunamma I am healed. She called for something to eat. Said it would not hurt her, for said she, I am healed. She was almost starved much of the time the whole month, she could not taste food; I gave it to her in the name of Jesus, she sat up and ..ate and the food did not hurt her from that day to this. God, by His mighty power did heal her of all these diseases. She said she thought the devil shook her around almost equal to Job, and the Lord took care of her. She is 9 years old, and gave her heart to God last spring. I know some of the saved ones thought that Bessie ought to have been healed at first. We felt that we were judged so, and were very much tried under the awful affliction; I do not think it was God’s will for her to be healed at first, but it was for our spiritual good in different ways. Let me say to all the saints, when your brother or sister is in trouble do not be too ready to blame them. Some-times it is most to the glory of God for one to suffer. I know that we have learned some things through this trial that would not have been learned otherwise. God always knows what is best. And when it was His will to heal her He let us know, for which I give God all the glory now and forever. “Whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom He receiveth.” I am thankful to God for His dealings with us; for He knows what is best for our spiritual wellfare. His will not mine be done in all things. To-day I am consecrated to God for time and eternity, determined by the grace of God to be true to Him at all times.

The Lord also healed me of an inward tumor of almost ten years standing for which I praise Him and give Him all the glory.

Your sister in Christ, saved and sanctified.

I feel led to write a few lines of praise for the Lord. I am still holding to the light that God gives me. I believe His Word, and also that if I am a true child of God, and if another one of God’s children testifies, I shall witness to their Spirit. Oh, the counterfeits there are today, and how they try to mix the true Gospel of Jesus Christ. but thank God, it cannot be mixed. It was the broken bread that fed His children. Halleluah; I have been told by some that I ought not to take that paper: and the editor was a fanatic. They also say there is danger of getting too much religion, but it seems to me that it is an impossiblity to have much of the religion of Jesus Christ, and support the devil or any thing that belongs to him. And for the Gospel Trumpet I can say, I have never seen any worldly advertisements in it and thank God for a paper that is for God alone.

Yours in the love of God.

Dear Brethren: — I love to testify to all the goodness of God to me. He has saved my soul from all the carnality of this world and sanctified me wholly to do his blessed will in all things, and enables me to understand the deep revelation of His Word; and also to rebuke, in the name of the Lord all the works of the devil and his ministers which surround us on every hand in this wicked little city. But I find in the Word of God that He tells me to stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ has made me free, and not be entangled, again with the yoke of bondage. Dear readers, when the Lord sanctified my soul I was placed upon the sea of glass mingled with fire; this happened five years ago and this Chrsitmas finds me in the same place yet wish a harp of praises in my heart for my deliverance from the mother of harlots and all her harlot daughters. Oh what terrible deception of the devil, for christians to think that they can keep saved and belong to any of these abominable human organizations when the pure Word of God tells them to “come out from among them” and also that it is impossible to be saved and have the mark of the beast, Rev. 11:9, 10. The prophet Jeremiah tells us when they depart from the Lord they shall be written in the earth. — Jer. 17:13. 5. and still we hear most every day of some kind of new institution gotten up by man. Even among us in our state, a few days ago we saw in the socalled HOLINESS RECORD a new organization invented by Mr. Shaw, and a few of his followers. They call themselvs the PRIMITIVE HOLINESS MISSION and claimed to be perfectly free. Still they will fight those who heard the voice: “Come out from among them.” I praise the Lord with all my heart that I heard and obeyed the voice which called me cut, and have no fellowship whatever with the unfruitful works of darkness, but my delight is to do the will of my Lord who has redeemed me unto himself.

Your brother in Christ.

Dear Saints of God: — We are fully saved and rusting in Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. Bless His holy name, Oh it is blessed to be hid away in Christ continually. We are moving out farther and farther in the ocean of His love. The lion of the tribe of Judah has given us the victory and we are more than conquerors through Christ Jesus. We count our selves nothing and Christ all and in all. We have a glorious Sabbath school here, led and conducted by persons filled with the Holy Ghost, and we know that it is good and pleasing to the Lord, for He wonderfully blesses our souls in the work and aids us in explaining the Word. The good fruits can already be seen, and we hope the saints every where will engage in this good work of rescueing souls of the children, and teach them the will of God concerning them. Pray for us that we may always be useful for the Master.

Dear Brethren: — may God ever bless you all. Oh how it fills my soul with glory to read the pure testimonies in the Gospel Trumpet. I have not met a saved soul since I came here, but I have a real victory in Jesus, and just take Him at His Word. I praise Him for the sanctifying and healing power and for the way He keeps me filled with His glory day by day. I thank the Lord that He permitted me to attend the Carthage Campmeeting I have a better experience than before; to Him be all the glory. Dear saints pray for me that I may ever have on the whole armor of God; and be true to Him in doing His will at all times, and be used in winning souls to Christ. May God send some holy baptized souls here with a tabernacle next summer. Your sister saved and built in the Church of God.

Dear Trumpet Readers: — To-day finds me enjoying full salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord. I am saved, healed, and kept hid in the Rock of Ages. I am very happy in the thought that Jesus doeth all things well, and that He will never leave nor forsake us. What a holy, peaceful, and glorious rest. O what infinite love is showered down upon us. Body, soul and spirit purified through the all atoning sacrifice. For if there is anything Jesus is anxious to give us, it is a clean heart. Dear Lord, deepen the love thou hast implanted in our soul, that they may he stamped with the image of the man Christ Jesus. Our lives sustained and made more sublime by the glory of the cross, let us remember God is guiding these lives of ours. God forbid we should obstruct Thy work.

We are creatures of a day. Rapidly we are voyaging toward the shining shore, and sweetest of all knowledge will be, we have a Saviour to welcome us to the shining portals of glory. The Word of God re veals to us that to enter there, our hearts must be complete and constant, we must obey the commands of our great Captain. We have enlisted under the banner of the cross, and must follow whithersoever that victorious banner leads. We must not be ashamed of Bethlehem’s star rising in the east, of the descending dove, nor of the royal inscription “Holiness to the lord.” For that banner we must stand, march, suffer, fight, endure the loss of all things and if need give up our lives. We must not grow impatient. There are no furloughs in Christ’s war, hut the King of Saints in His own good time, grants a discharge and calls His faithful servants home. I am not my own; I belong to Jesus; I have no life but in Him, though in the world yet not of the world; I do praise God He has set me free. Where shall thy praise begin? This perfect love is indeed a pearl of great price.

’Tis not by worldly wisdom, but by my spirit, saith the Lord. I praise God for an heirship and for establishing me in righteousness. What comfort His children find in His holy Word. I have seen such beauty in studying His dealings with the children of Israel. He has shown me that the pillar of cloud that went by day and the pillar that went by night was nothing more than His presence. And it was darkness to the Egyptians. How typical to the saint and sinner. Light to one, and darkness to the other. In all their journeyings, God’s presence was with them just as He will direct His Israel of to-day. I know the Lord is leading me. He gave me a dream which filled my heart with joy. I will give it in a few words: I dreamed a cousin and I were out in a large open field in the dusk of the evening; all at once the earth seemed to lighten up, and as I lifted my eyes to apprehend the cause, my attention was drawn to a bright place in the sky, the whole length of the firmanent

At first, only about six inches in width; but white gazing upon it, the space began to expand, and in a few moments it seemed a yard in width; and then it began to glitter like rain drops in the sun, and as it continued to expand the place seemed to be filled with the glory of God. The grandeur can not be described. Then in a few moments I could see a host of sinning angels, and then just behind them I saw my Savior coming; I turned to my cousin and said: There comes the Savior for us. And what a look of sorrow and fear came over her face, and she began to run back. My whole heart went out to meet Him, and I awoke running to meet my dear Lord. For days my heart was full of joy to know He had made me ready to meet Him. This cousin has been a strong opposer to my blessed experience. I will close by wishing you all a happy Christmas bringing you best gifts which our Father has in store, even the peace of God which passeth all understanding and a constant growth in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Your sister saved and sanctified by the blood of Jesus.

Dear Brethren: — My testimony is that I am saved through the precious blood of Jesus: and I do thank God for a present salvation, bless the Lord. He saves me from sin and I am on the blood and fire line for glory. Dear saints pray for me that I stand firm for the Lord, your saved Bro.

Dear Brethren: — I feel led of the Spirit to write my testimony. I am resting in the promise of God, and praise His blessed name for the precious evening light that fills my soul. I am deprived of the privilege of hearing the pure Gospel preached, and wish that God would lead some true Holy Ghost man to come here and spread the holiness doctrine. I believe much good can be clone here. People in general are hospitable and land, and Snake River is thickly settled; but it will take one filled with the Holy Ghost to melt their hardened hearts. I am a widow with two children, and limited in means, but my home is a home for any child of God. I earnestly ask the prayers of God’s Children that I may overcome all temptations. I have many sore trials to overcome since in this wicked country. Praise God! His grace is sufficient, if we trust Him. I send yon the widow’s mite in support of the Gospel.

May the God of all grace keep you saved. Yours in Christ.

Dear Saints: — As we are but few in number here and have no place to worship only in private houses, we are indeavoring by the help of God, to build us a place of worship. We would invite the dear saints that are able and feel led of God to help us in this effect. We are locked out of all sectarian houses unless we compromise and mingle with them, and that we know is contrary to the Word of God. If any one feels led to help, us send the means to.

Dear Saints: — I am led of the Spirit to testify of Christ, and His keeping power. Oh, how sweetly I am kept each day of my life, though severely tried of the devil, yet I can smile at his devices. The Lord has seen fit to send me out to work for Him, and I gladly accept the task knowing this, that He will give me all needed strength to do His work. Pray much for me that I may stand firm unto the end. Your humble sister in the Church of the Firstborn, whose name is written in heaven.

Dear Saints: — I am still saved and kept by the mighty power of God. Oh I do praise Him for saving me from all sin, and keeping me and my companion. I have not been living here long, but praise the Lord, there are a few saints here, and we have our little prayer meetings, and God is with us, and that to bless. Praise the Lord, some have come out of babylon since we came, and they testify strong for the Lord. Your brother saved and kept by the power of God.

Dear Brethren: — Knowing that we overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony, I desire to add my testimony of the power of Christ to save. Jesus has given me complete victory over the devil and all his powers. He gives me sufficient grace to endure all the frowns and scoffs of the world, and O halleluah! I praise the Lord, for every step I need to take. He keeps me saved sanctified soul and body, and gives me glorious victory. He makes the way very plain before me and by walking in the light and obeying Him, I am made more than conqueror. Yours in the love of God, built in the Church of God. Sanctified and made meet for the Master use.

Dear Brethren: — I have just arrived here and found my friends in great faith in the true Church of God and longing to have some of the Holy Ghost ministers come here to preach the true Word of God. We would very much like to have Bro. GROVER come, if the Lord wills, to preach the truth, and I think there would be a great work done. I Have an invalid sister who desires the prayers of all the saints that she may be healed; she also wishes to he baptized. I can say this morning that I am wholly given up to God, redeemed and sanctified through the blood of Jesus. Pray earnestly for us here in this place. Your sister in Christ.

Dear Trumpet Readers: — Our testimony just now is that we are fully saved out on the sea of glass, obedient to do the whole will of our blessed Lord the best we know. O praise the name of Jesus for ever and ever. There are only a few here, but I believe we are fully persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Five weeks ago we went to an ordinance meeting at Bro, Coggins place, and had a glorious time; saints rejoiced, and the unsaved wept. O praise the Lord, for ever. We all returned, feeling greatly blessed and strengthened for the work given us to do. May the Lord bless the dear laborers in the field, and all the dear saint: every where. Me are trusting Jesus our Savior for the salvation of souls here, and for all things, and are receiving from His hand as our needs demand; praise his name forever! Your sister saved, sealed and kept through the blood, Amen

Dear Brethren: — My testimony is that I am saved, praise the Lord, and wholly sanctified to God to do His will. I am so glad that God did ever save my poor soul. Then it seemeth good in His sight to say; go preach my Gospel. All I can say is: the Lord’s will be done in this heart of mine. I do praise God for this wonderful salvation that keeps us from sin. I thank God for the way He leads His dear children. I am all sold out to God to do His will. His precious blood has bought me. I have nothing that I can call my own. Praise the Lord! My greatest desire is to see poor souls come into the kingdom of God. My cry is daily: Lord what can I do? and He says: I must work the works of Him who sent me. while it is day. The night cometh when no man can work. While the dear saints gathered in at sister Hilliards for prayer-meeting last Sabbath, the fire from God filled each soul, and sinners were made to weep. One brother was reclaimed and received the witness that his sins were forgiven. I praise God for His wonderful saving power. Your Bro. saved and sanctified,

Dearly Beloved: — I praise God that I am saved and sanctified and kept by the power of God. The blood of Jesus cleanses me from all sin, and I am out of babylon: out of secret societies, and from all wicked company. Praise God! He healed me both soul and body. I was sick for a month or more, with a fever but I took it to Jesus for my healing, and He so wonderfully healed me. Praise God this morning for victory. Your sister in Christ
