The School of Christ.

—:o:—

“There is a school on earth begun,
Conducted by the Holy One;
He sets His students all to prove
The principle of perfect love,

“Come all my friends wher’ere you be;
Say will you go to school with me?
Christ Jesus is my Master’s name,
To day, as yesterday the same.

“My Master learns the blind to see,
Come all ye blind, the school is free;
My Master learns the lame to walk,
He likewise learns the dumb to talk.

“He learns the swearing man to pray,
Come ye profane without delay;
He’ll change your tongue to praise His name,
And spread abroad your Masters fame.

“My Master learns the deaf to hear;
Come all ye deaf and lend an ear
Unto my Master’s pleasant voice,
And He will make your soul rejoice.

“The Scripture is our school book true;
Its lessons are for ever new.
The scholars all are well agreed
It is a blessed school indeed.

“Come brethren, sisters dear, we are at school.
Attention pay to every rule,
And soon we’ll have that holy art,
Of loving God with all our heart.

When these frail tenements must die,
Then we must lay our school books by,
And reign with master Jesus then,
Glory to God! Hallelujah! Amen!”

THE ISRAELITES RETURN TO GOD.

—:o:—

Jesus foretold that “Jerusalem — the literal city — shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the time of the Gentiles be fulfilled” — Luke 31:24. And Paul, by inspiration of the Spirit, “that blindness in part is happened to Israel — the Jews — until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in — Rom. 11:25.

Those two texts stand as two lighthouses signalizing the end of the Gentile age. If their predictions be true, they must come to pass coincidently. For two events that were to occur at the time of the same event, must concur with each other in point of time. Now what are the facts in this case? Christ’s words really imply that the Jews should not dwell at Jerusalem during the time that the Gospel should be specially blest to the Gentile nations. And He who uttered the very unsupposable prediction, disposed the hearts of kings to debar the Jews from that place of their greatest attraction, during all these centuries. But in 1879 a treaty was made between Rothchilds, a very wealthy Jew, and the Turkish Government, in which he secured privileges for his nation to return to Palestine. From this time forth, the Jews have been going back to their ancient home; colonies have settled at various points, and Jewish institutions have been established. Every year the number of Jews that return from all parts of the world to the ancient holy land are increasing. And Jerusalem, so long beneath the feet of the Gentiles, is fast becoming an Israelite city. And true to the Word of God, from about the same time Palestine was opened to the Jews, the blinded eyes of that long distressed nation began to be opened; and it is a remarkable fact that Jews are receiving Christ as their long expected Messiah. Jewish christian missions are established in about every country, and Israelite missionaries are preaching Christ all over the world. A few extracts from the Hebrew Christian, a paper published by Jacob Freshman, a converted Jew in N. Y. will interest our readers, and give you an idea how the great God of the Bible is moving forward to day in fulfilling His own precious Word.

A HEBREW-CHRISTIAN IN BRAZIL.

Our hearts have been filled with joy and thanksgiving over one of our dear young Hebrew brethren who has lately entered upon mission work in San Paulo, Brazil, as we learn from “Brazilian Missions.” A missionary there has been led to pray earnestly for “present awakening” among “God’s ancient people Israel.” He was burdened as never before for their salvation.

“I cannot tell you how great is the fortune I have found in this religion. In my old Talmudic Hebrew religion I always used to expect the Messias; but since I left my old belief I find the Messias is always with me; and I am glad that He sustains me in every need.

A HEBREW CONVERT.

Dear Brother Freshman: — When in Niagara last summer, I promised to write you about my father’s conversion from Judaism. He was an English Jew, born in Brighton, came to this country as one in the English eleven. He was very fond of athletic sports. Coming to Toronto, when Rev. Jas. Caughey was holding revival services in the old Richmond Street Church. He with three other Jewish friends entered to hear what the man had to say, who was then shaking the city from its center to its circumference. All hearts were moved, and as he spoke of the promised Messiah, and quoted and read from the Old Testament, words that were very familiar to Jewish ears, and showed how they were fulfilled in the person of Jesus, the Christ, my father’s mart was broken, subdued, and with trembling love and gratitude he came to God the Father, through Jesus the Son, and was accepted in the Beloved.

O with what joy he received the Messiah! Old things had passed away; all things have become new. He changed his course of living, gave up parties, dancing, etc., and lived only to glorify God.

He was in business; and one morning while going to the boat to receive goods, he was instantly called into the presence of his Elder Brother, Christ the Lord.

Before leaving his young wife he gave her sweet consolation; as if he had a presentiment of speedy separation from her, and spoke much of Christ’s love for him and of his love for Christ.

I am his orphan daughter, born after us death. I never knew an earthly father’s love, but my Heavenly Father has made up for all.

I might say that the other Jewish friends of my father all accepted Christ before those services ended.

Your friend in Him,

E. Y. S.

Jaffa is to be the head-quarters of the Mission, “as a focus from which Gospel beams may radiate all around.” Jaffa contains a Jewish population of some 2,000 souls. At no great distance from it are several agriculture colonies of Jews; and it is reported that almost every steamer coming down the Mediterranean lands a number of Jewish families, returning to the land of their fore-fathers for good and all. And there is Hebron, containing the sepulchres of the Hebrew patriarchs, with its growing Jewish population of perhaps another 2.000, and no settled messenger of the Gospel in it!

For long years the whole of Palestine has been relegated by the Protestant world almost exclusively to the Episcopal church. The London Society for promoting Christanity amongst the Jews, and the Church Missionary Society have done much blessed work, for which all should rejoice and thank God. Now, however, that the Jewish population of Palestine has more than doubled within a few years, and is constantly increasing, non-Episcopal churches and societies could not honorably abstain any longer from sharing in the work.

REPORT FROM OUR MISSIONARY IN CHICAGO.

In general the Jews that now come to our meetings axe earnest people inquiring into the way of truth. In our reading- room they find tracts in Hebrew, German and English, from which they can learn that the Messiah has come and that in Him all things are accomplished which are written in the law and the prophets. We distribute tracts and Hebrew New Testaments. We need a large supply of these.

From time to time a Christian worker will come and ask for a Hebrew New Testament to give it to some Hebrews who are inquiring where they can get one. There are other Jews who are not able to read the New Testament in Hebrew; they are reading tracts etc;

One Jew lost his position because he was found reading the New Testament. This Jew was a teacher of Hebrew, he was reported to the rabbi and dismissed. He came to see us quite often and seemed to receive more and more light.

Another whom we believe to be truly converted, only four weeks ago, was the leader in the opposition in our meetings.

We have now a Bible class and next Friday, the Lord willing, we shall have our first prayer meeting. We shall then have an opportunity to pray for each other on the same evening. My wife is doing good work among the Jews. She visits many families and begins to understand Hebrew.

Please send me a few copies of the HEBREW-CHRISTIAN.

Yours in Christ,

B. Angel.

JEWS ON THE CONTINENT. — On Monday last Mr. David Baron, accompanied by Mr. Barnett, started on another three months, mission tour. They go through to Vienna, and hope to visit many places in Hungary, where they have not been before, and then proceed to Roumania, where they hope to spend most of the time. Their work will be chiefly directed to the distribution of the Hebrew New Testament, and they desire prayer for a rich blessing on their efforts. — The (London) Christian.

So let all the nations fear before God. Let the Jews receive their real Messiah, the Christ of the Old and New Testament. And let all Gentiles that hope to escape from the wrath of God seek mercy with all their heart, for the Spirit of God is being grieved away from the Gentile nations, by the sect administrations; and darkness and gross delusion is settling down upon the Gentile world, and it has rested upon the Jews in the past centuries. The Jews crucified the Son of God, the second person of the Trinity, and thereby filled the cup of their iniquity, which was poured out upon them in great wrath.

The Gentile sects have crucified the Holy Spirit, the third person, by rejecting sanctification; and all who really possess the sanctifier, and utter destruction is coming upon them. Let all nations prepare to meet God, for He cometh in wrath to judge the people, to judge all men by His awful Word. Amen! Come Lord Jesus.

THE YARN LINE’S REPLY.

—:o:—

THE little paper, inappropriately calling itself the “Plumb Line,” pretends to make a reply to our article some months ago, exposing its false doctrine. The Editor first makes the following note of us.

“Two replies to ordinance advocates, one to H. Minsker, of this state, and another to preacher Warner, Editor of a modern hallelujah-holiness, holy kiss, oil-anointing and wild-fire publication in Mich, have been crowded out of this issue.”

This is a very good sample of the ancient pharisees who were annoyed by the people’s shouts and hallelujahs to the Messiah, and desired Christ to hush them up. And it is a perfect fulfillment of the latter day apostasy, wherein it was predicted that the people “have a form of godliness but deny the power thereof.” The beast took away the “daily sacrifice” — Daniel — which is “the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.” — Heb. 13:15. And now since God has brought His holy people back to Mount Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads, this babe teacher, with all the rest of frigid religionists, thinks it smart to characterize us by “hallelujah holiness.” He imagines that he has come out of babylon, but he is far from it, he is yet where “all joy is withered away from the children of men,” and has no part with those who have obeyed the voice of God, “and come out of her,” who are described in Revelations 19:6-8 as follows:

“And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honor to Him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and His wife bath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.” Are you so blind as to think you can see God without holiness? And do you foolishly imagine that you can have. God’s holiness in your soul, and not have joyful hallelujahs on your lips? Should we not, in this glorious dispensation of the Holy Spirit, at least measure up to David’s resolution when he said, “The praises of the Lord shall continually be in my mouth?”

We are also characterized as believing in the “holy kiss,” and oil-anointing.” Very well my dear erring brother, we have no apologies to offer for believing and practicing the New Testament. Before you are so free in stigmatizing us, as you suppose, you had better stop and read your Bible first, lest you find yourself flinging contempt at the Word of God at the same time. We invite your attention to the following New Testament Scriptures, Christ said to the cold hearted hypocritical pharisee:

Thou gavest us no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet. — Luke 7:45.

Thus saith Christ, by His inspired apostles, to the Church.

Salute one another with an holy kiss. — Rom. 16:16.

Greet ye one another with an holy kiss. 1 Cor. 16:20.

Greet one another with an holy kiss. — 2 Cor. 13 12.

Greet all the Brethren with an holy kiss. 1 Thess. 5:26.

Greet ye one another with a kiss of charity (love.) — 1 Pet. 5:14.

We also recommend to your consideration these Scriptures.

And they went out and preached that men should repent. And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them. — Mark 6:12, 13.

Is any sick among you let him call for the Elders of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. — James 5:14, 15. This command of the inspired apostle was given A. D. 60, and is just as much in force to-day as then. But in these corrupt apostate times, men think it a reproach to believe and practice the Word of God. They “can not endure sound doctrine,” they “turn away their ears from the truth, and are turned unto fables.” We are perfectly willing to have our character reproached by every sentiment and doctrine of the New Testament, if believing and doing its words, is thought by men to be deserving of opprobrium.

He also ascribes to us “wild fire.” Well Jesus says: Every one of you shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt. — Mark 9:49. On the day of pentecost when this Scripture was fulfilled, the Spirit like tongues of fire sat upon them who received the Holy Spirit. The pharisees thought it was a wild fire intoxication of some kind, and actually pronounced them drunk. So it has been ever since the dispensation of the Holy Spirit began; dead, blind formalists never can understand nor appreciate the power of the Holy Spirit in them that possess Him. In Isaiah 32:1-3 is a glorious description of the primitive power and glory of the Church: verses 9-14, describe the desolate apostasy that has nearly eclipsed the true light of the Gospel for so many long centuries, when “thorns and briers came up on the land of my people.” This desolation was to continue “until the Spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest.” — ver. 15.

So nothing but the outpouring of the Holy Spirit from on high changes this barren babel state into a fruitful field. But when He comes, all kindred spirits to the ancient pharisees, “count the fruitful field for a forest.” They cry out confusion, etc. and ascribe the mighty power of God to some inexplicable “wild fire.” And the more lost sinners are redeemed, the more drunkards are made sober, righteous and godly; the more cruel hard hearted sinners are turned to righteousness, and become virtuous God-praising Christians, the more cursing is turned to holy shouts of praise, the more they writhe, “gnaw their tongues for pain,” and denounce the work as of the devil; simply because God has left them to their vain jangling, and is using such as have His Spirit, and obey His commandments. This is the very spirit of false religion manifest by all these quakerized opposers of the commands of Jesus Christ.

But what is the Editor’s reply to our article. There is very little in it that deserves notice. A large portion of it is devoted to republishing base lies and slanders which satan has put in print against us in times past. While we regret that the Editor has taken upon himself the responsibility of answering before the bar of God for publishing, as unqualified facts, slanderous falsehoods, without knowing whether they are true or not; we ourself can still rejoice and leap for joy when men thus cast out our name as evil. At other principal part of the article is a large number of Scriptures that renounce evil workers, false teachers etc., which the Editor finds much easier to set up in type, and assert that they apply to us, than to answer the large unanswerable array of Scriptures that rebuke his anti christ doctrine. One of the Scriptures he recites is this: “Clouds they are without water, carried about by winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit.” etc. May God pity the barren hearts who comfort themselves by crying, “Without fruit,” to others. In the love of Jesus we say to the Plumb Line editor & L. H. Johnson and Co., show us your fruits. God pity your poor fruitless lives. If ye were not utterly blind you could not help but know that thousands to day are praising God for full salvation from all sin, sectism, tobacco and all other works of the devil, through our labors, directly and indirectly. Directly through our ministry, and indirectly through the efforts of laborers that God has called into the vineyard of the Lord. In the name of Christ we ask you what you are doing? L. H. Johnson has been throwing hail on the sects without any fire and blood for twenty years, and we have yet to see in his columns the testimony of one soul saved through his labors. We have never yet known a soul that had the Holy Spirit of God, to embrace your doctrine without thereby becoming fruitless, withered and lifeless. In one meeting last winter, two souls brought up in quakerism, came to the altar and received forgiveness of sins; and afterward tried to consecrate for entire sanctification. They were blessed with the witness of adoption at least, and rejoiced in the Lord. But just as soon as they understood that we were going to “teach the people to observe all things whatsoever Christ hath commanded us,” they began to lose their testimony, and the joy of the Lord out of their hearts. And when we read the Word of God upon these duties they treated it with contempt. They went right over on the side of the devil, and one of them began to circulate lies before the meeting closed, and kept it up afterward telling even base falsehoods against the saints of God. This we can prove by a number of saints. Such then are the fruits of the Stumbling Slone and Plumb Line doctrine. What the fruits of the truth we preach are; let the hundreds of testimonies in the TRUMPET and the holy congregation of happy men and women who have been saved by the power of God from all the works of the devil, testify. “For they themselves show of us what manner of entering in we had unto them, and how they turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God.” — 1 Thess. 1:9. L. H. Johnson related to us himself how certain ones who held to him, could not be induced to abandon their tobacco.

The editor referring to Paul’s words in 1 Col. 11:2, “Keep the ordinances as I delivered them unto you,” asserts that “not a word is said about a supper.” This is a fiat contradiction of the truth, for in the same chapter Paul reproves the Corinthians for eating a whole meal, and asserts that “this — their pratice — was not to eat the Lord’s supper,” but he proceeds to tell just what is. “For I have received of the Lord that which I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus, the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread:” etc. Here Paul describes the very same institution Christ enjoined upon His Church the same night He was betrayed, as we find in Matt. Mark and Luke. The fact that Christ in giving the bread and wine, and command

A CHILDREN’S PAPER.

—:o:—

Dearly Beloved Saints of the Most High God: – Quite frequently brethren write us asking us if we cannot publish a children’s paper. There seems to be quite a general demand, but whether this demand is sufficient to justify the undertaking or not, we cannot tell; and the object of the present notice is to ascertain. One thing of which we are well convinced and that is that much more should be done for the children than is being done. Because babylon worldly Sabbath Schools are schools of pride and error, some seem to think we should do nothing at all to interest, teach and train our children in the ways of the Lord. This is wrong reasoning; the saints of God should be careful to do their duty to the children; they should teach them at home the fear of the Lord, and none the less have meetings or Sabbath Schools to teach them the rich lessons of the Word of God. In order to do so successfully, the schools should be so classed as to have the children of about the same age brought together, so as to make the instruction suited to their capacity. Brethren write us from different localities stating that they have good successful Sabbath Schools. Many more should be started. One important feature, is the instruction of children whose parents are irreligious, and who have, no opportunity to learn of Christ, the children’s Friend and Savior. Such should be gathered on the Lord’s day, and taugnt in the ways of God’s love and truth. Where schools can be formed, a childrens paper will be a great help to keep up the interest. And where the children have not that blessing, the paper is even still more needed. Now therefore you dear brethren who have written us asking for suck a paper, and all others who love the souls of children, whom Jesus our Savior so much loves, will you please ascertain as soon as possible how many papers will be taken in your neighborhood. We suggest a paper one fourth as large as the Trumpet, semi-monthly, for about 25 cents per year; cheaper if the circulation will enable us to make it so. Please attend to the matter at once, and send in your reports in the name of the Lord. Amen!

We do not now call for subscriptions, but a report of the possible number of papers you will want, which is necessary before we can know whether the enterprise is practical or not.

STATE OF THE CHURCH.

_____

BY B. S. FOSTER, BISHOP OF THE M. E. CHURCH

_____

The Church of God is to-day courting the world. Its members are trying to bring it down to the level of the ungodly. The ball the theatre, nude and lewd art, social luxuries, with all their loose moralities, are making inroads into the sacred enclosure of the Church, and at a satisfaction for all this worldliness, Christians are making a great deal of Lent’ and Easter and good Friday, and Church ornamentations. It is the old trick of satan. The Jewish Church struck on that rock, the Romish Church was wrecked on the same, and the Protestant Church is fast reaching the same doom.

Our great dangers, as we see them, are as similation to the world, neglect of the poor, substitution of the form for the fact of godliness, abandonment of discipiline, a hireling ministry, an impure gospel, which summed up is a fashionable church. That Methodists should be liable to such an outcome, and that there should be signs of it in a hundred years from the “sail loft,” seems almost the miracle of history; but who that looks about him to-day can fail to see the fact?

Do not Methodists, in violation of God’s word and their own dicipline, dress as extravagantly and as fashionably as any other class? Do not the ladies, and often the wives and daughters of the ministry, put on “gold and pearls and costly array?” Would not the plain dress insisted upon by John Wesley, Bishop Asbury, and worn by Hester Ann Rogers, Lady Huntington, and many others equally distinguised, be now regarded in Methodist circles as fanaticism? Can any one going into the Methodist Church in any of our chief Cities distinguish the attire of the communicants from that of the theater and ball goers? Is not worldiness seen in the music? Elaborately dressed and ornamented choirs, who in many cases make no profession of religion and are often sneering skeptics, go through a cold artistic, or operatic performance which is as much in harmony with spiritual worship as an opera or theater. Under such worldly performance spirituality is frozen to death.

Formerly every Methodist attended class and gave testimony of experimental religion. Now the class-meeting is attended by very few, and in many churches abandoned. Seldom the stewards, trustees and leaders of the church attend class. Formerly nearly every Methodist prayed, testified or exhorted in prayer-meeting. Now but very few are heard. Formerly shouts and raises were heard, now such demonstrations of holy enthusiasm and joy are regarded as fanaticism.

Worldly socials, fairs, festivals, concerts and such like, have taken the place of the religious gatherings, revival meetings, class and prayer meetings of earlier days.

How true that the Methodist discipline is a dead letter. Its rules forbid the wearing of gold, or pearls, or costly array; yet no one ever thinks of disciplining its members for violating them. They forbid the reading of such books and the taking of such diversions as do not minister to godliness, yet the Church itself goes to shows, and frolics, and festivals, and fairs, which destroy the spiritual life of the young as well as the old. The extent to which this is now carried on is appalling. The spiritual death it carries in its train will only be known when the millions it has swept into hell stand before the judgment.

The early Methodist ministers went forth to sacrifice and suffer for Christ. They sought not places of ease and affluence, but of privation and suffering. They gloried not in their big salaries, fine parsonages and refined congregations, but in the souls that had been won for Jesus. Oh, how changed! A hireling ministry will be a feeble, a timid truckling, a time-serving ministry without faith, endurance and holy power. Methodism formerly dealt in the great central truth. Now the pulpits deal largely in generalities, and in popular lectures. The glorious doctrine of Entire Sanctification is rarely heard and seldom witnessed to in the pulpits.

Methodist Exchange.

NOTE.

What an awful description of babylon! The writer of the above words, Bishop Foster, is the oldest and most revered bishop of the Methodist sect. He shows the dark confusion of sect education when he confounds the “Church of God” with the “Protestant Church.” With all their education, sectarians never see the body of Christ, which only is the Church of God. How preposterous to talk about “the Church of God courting the world.” How can two court each other that have no affinity whatever? Any person who is of the world is not of the Church of God at all, and Christ testifies that the world hates those who are not of the world, but in the Church. By the Word of God, and experience, we know that we are crucified to the world, and the world is crucified unto us. How can the Church and the world, being dead to each other, conduct a courtship together? The world hates the Church, and the Church hates the evil spirit and sinful works of the world. Can these court each other?

But by reading on we perceive that the Bishop is speaking of the babel of protestantism, and more particularly of the Methodist sect, which only set sail a hundred years ago.

But it is still a mistake that the Methodist sect, and protestantism generally are courting the world. Nay the courtship is over long ago, and has resulted in a marriage of the two. They have taken each- other by the right hand, and stood up before the devil who worked up the “match,” and officiated on the nuptial occasion, and have taken upon them the marriage vows, and bound themselves under a great curse, that they will ever hail each other, in bonds of union. That they will “ever conceal, and never reveal” their dark sins. And that they will ever protect, defend, screen and help each other in all the works of the flesh, the world and the devil. And now since the marriage of the world and the sects has taken place, they are living in their gay honeymoon, and reveling in their nuptial festivities. Every festival and social given by the sects, is on the occasion of their marriage to the world. The marriage seems to be on a very low plain of the flesh, giving rise to even “nude and lewd” frolics. Nude means naked, lewd is “licentious, indulging in lust.” Thus the Bishop, it would appear, uses the lowest, even naked, theatrical performances to describe the works of darkness creeping into his sect.

Under these corrupt performances he says: “Spirituality is frozen to death.” Then they must have been spewed out by the Lord a good while ago, even when they reached the temperature of lukewarmness.

It being even true that the Bishop says, that “worldly socials, fairs, festivals, concerts and such like, have taken the place of the religious gatherings, revival meeting, class and prayer meetings of earlier days,” it is evident that the devil, who is the god of this world, must have taken the place of Christ in that sect. Hence “worldly doings have supplanted the “religious meetings.” Can a real child of God remain in fellowship with such a corrupt institution?

Worse still, he truthfully says, The church — meaning the Methodist sect — itself goes to shows, and frolics, and festivals, and fairs, which destroy the spiritual life of the young as well as the old. The extent to which this is now carried on, is appalling. The spiritual death it carries in its train will only be known when the millions it has swept into hell stand before the judgment.” Here is an awful description of a wholesale soul destroying influence. Is that the “Church of God?” The Bishop’s mistake in calling such the Church of God, is probably only equaled by his blindness in remaining in the soul devouring institution.

If the influence of Methodist attending frolics, shows, fairs &c, is so appallingly fatal, what increased millions of souls must there be stumbling down to hell over the “frolics, shows and fairs,” that are actually gotten up, and held by that sect itself, to make money?

The Bishop records the … … … …

Page 3

Methodism with “a hireling ministry, an impure Gospel, which summed up is a fashionable church.” And we may safely add that a fashionable church is the devil’s institution. For God’s Church is not of this world, and never can be conformed to the fashion of this world.

In noting the great degeneration of his sect, the Bishop exclaims, “O how changed!” Ah yes! thus saith the Lord: “How has the faithful city became a harlot,” as the prophet describes. If any one has doubted the fact that babylon the great has fallen and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every hateful and unclean bird, we think Bishop Foster’s description of the fall of his own sect should be sufficient to open your eyes. Yea she is fallen, fallen. “And I heard another voice from Heaven, saying, Come out of her my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto Heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.” — Rev. 18:2, 4, 5.

May God help every honest soul to come out of such corruption, and never again insult God by calling such a soul reprobating institution the Church. God’s Church is not sending millions of souls to hell, but is the body of Christ, and His means of saving the lost. If you would escape the wrath of God, make haste to abandon all such apostate daughters of the mother of harlots. Leave all to follow Christ. Take refuge in Him only. “And ye are complete in Him.” Amen!

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

—:o:—

A GLORIOUS MEETING.

—:o:—

We left the dear saints at the TRUMPET OFFICE May 15, in company with brother Samuel Speck and sister Nannie Kigar, and came to Fulton Co. O., to hold the Grove Meetings, announced in the TRUMPET. On the way we were happily joined by sister Frankie Miller who had been making a call at home in Battle Creek.

The weather was not favorable for Grove Meeting, so we held the meeting in Bro. and sister Spray’s house near Ridgeville, except on Sabbath, we had it in the grove. Bro. Kilpatrick. Bro. Howard from Payne, O., and dear Bro. and sister Miller and Bro. Spackey from Jerry City, my home, came to the meeting. O, what a heavenly feast to meet those dear saints again! Dear sister Carrie Hitchcock from Fayette, and sister Clara Kinney from Archhold, O., we wore also very happy to meet.

Praise God this meeting will never be forgotten. It was a meeting of wonderful power, of joy and of salvation. A few souls were gloriously saved and sanctified wholly, filled with the power of God, and were made to speak with new tongues. One sister came from Fayette, O. She was a member of the M. E. sect and thought we should not say so much against the sects. But she had an honest heart, and when she saw the pure light of the Gospel, she received the truth and the Lord saved and fully sanctified her by the Holy Spirit.

She testified that she never had such sweet peace and love in heart before in her life. The weather not being fit for out door meetings, the announcement for meeting at Archbold was not fulfilled.

The Lord having provided a way for me to go home with Bro. and sister Miller and Bro. Spackey, I am thankful to improve it. I expect to return to Payne, June 1st to help in the meeting there. Your sister saved with an everlasting salvation.

A LETTER FROM THE SOUTH.

—:o:—

Columbia, S. C. May 22-1888.

Dear Bro. Byrum: — Praise my blessed Master for this privilege of writing, and for this morning’s blessings. He is still leading me and lending His aid and assistance, for which I thank and bless His holy name.

I received your most cheering letter which gave me much comfort; and was glad to hear from you as your letters always give me great encouragement. My good Master has destroyed all my desires and thoughts concerning babylon and her fine pleasures; and each day of my life I am growing farther and farther from her and I never will return, though the whole world should renounce this true way of holiness, and reject all who follow in the footsteps of Jesus, for I have forever escaped from the clutches of such confusion and am now living in peace with God.

We are going to have a grove meeting here, the good Lord willing, commenceing June 21 ending June 24. Brethren please remember us in your prayers. The babylon priests are raging against us, but Jesus is standing at the helm of our ship and guides it in the way He will have it to go. We are not afraid of the storm of their threatenings; neither are we uneasy for fear of running against any thing they may put in the way, while our captain is on board; captain Jesus. Pray for us. Your saved and sanctified Bro.

Payne, O.

Dear Brethren and all Trumpet Readers: — God bless you with all spiritual blessings in Christ Jesus. Praise our God! I am saved through and through by the precious blood of Jesus which makes me whiter than snow.

We left Henry Co. O. on the 23rd of May, and on the evening of the 24th we commenced a meeting in Paulding Co. O. at the Log meeting-house in Washington, Tp. The meeting lasted only a few days and the Lord was there in power. Several consecrated during the meeting, some for pardon, others for sanctification. We have reason to believe that some received an experience which they never had before. From this meeting we went to Payne, O. where the saints came in from all directions and the Lord gave us a feast of fat things. Some came to the meeting wonderfully warped and twisted by the devil; but all that would be made straight the good Lord straightened, and they went on their way rejoicing.

At the Payne meeting there were saints from Sandusky. Medina, Shelby and Vanwert Counties Ohio; and Whitley Co. Ind. Praise our God! The Lord wonderfully blessed the people and there were over forty consecrations in all during the four days the meeting lasted. Praise our God and to Him be all the glory. Amen!

A. J. Kilpatrick.

Payne, O.

Dear Brethren: — The meeting near Ridgeville O. was a glorious victory. The meeting was held in the Grove only on Sunday 20th. There was a large congregation out to hear the Word of God, and thank God, there were some present that endorsed the truth as it is in Jesus Christ. During the meeting a few souls were made free from all sin by the blood and Spirit of Christ. Sister Lederer from Fayette O., who came with sister Hitchcock to the meeting, was gloriously saved by the power of God. The devil did try hard to make the sister go against the truth. But thank God, he did not accomplish it. Sister Kinney could not stay for the night meeting, and had sister Hitchcock take her home with horse and buggy; and on their way the horse became frightened, and began backing into the ditch; the sisters jumped out, and sister H. broke her limb. She was taken to sister Kinney’s. On Sabbath sister K. came to the meeting and informed us of the accident, and desired that would come and pray with sister H.. On Tuesday the 22nd, a load of the saints went in the name of the Lord, and had prayer with the afflicted sister. While on our knees the Lord impressed us that sister Lederer should apply for healing, and that He would heal her. When we so informed her she said she knew it. O hallelujah to God! That moment the power of God seemed to fill the whole house. We anointed her with oil, in the name of the Lord, laid hands on her, and in less than two minutes she was healed, and went about the room shouting the praises of the Lord. We heard her tell sister H. that her accident was all to the honor of God, and the salvation of her soul and healing of her body. Well bless God! we read in the Word of God, “All things work together for good to them that love the Lord.” She also remarked that likely the devil would have driven her home from the meeting if the way had not been hedged up by the accident. We left the three sisters happy in the Lord, and had one more meeting, then took train for Melrose O., where we filled up the time of the proposed meeting at Archhold O. There were present at the Ridgeville meeting, from a distance, Bro’s A. J. Kilpatrick, J. N. Howard, Philip Spacky, and dear Bro. and sister Miller of Jerry City Ohio.

We look for a harvest of souls in that place in the near future. We are still saved by the blood of the Lamb.

S. L. Speck.

Seybert, Mo.

Dearly Beloved op the Lord Greetins: – May the dear Lord bless and fill you with His blessed fullness. Amen! We closed meeting near Shady Grove, in the Bethel neighborhood, last night and came here to day! We came to Bethel and found the professors of holiness badly divided and somewhat confused. Little could be done for them, as the most of them were anti-ordinance putting away the Word of God. Some of them were so much deluded that they claimed it would be sin for them to even see any one baptized; such is caused by abominable, crooked teachers and hypocrites. We found there men, professing to be holy men of God, who fought the ordinances of the house of God, chewed the abominable tobacco and were living in adultery with second wives, not knowing but what their first wives still lived. God have mercy on such poor deluded souls, still crying out, “Sanctified wholly, just as good as any body.” There were a few who wanted to be straight for God; good honest souls. God bless them and lead them out more and more, and keep them from the evil of the world. Two young men were wonderfully converted to God yesterday; God bless and keep the lambs of the fold.

We found that entire neighborhood very lard to reach; our little company preached the awful Word of God nine days, and only a very few seemed to receive the truth. We came here to day, stopped with a precious sister who had been converted some time; we had prayer with her, and she placed herself on the altar; and the altar sanctified the gift. Glory to God for ever and ever! God can work and none can hinder. We expect to commence meeting near Seybert, tomorrow night. Pray or us; we all have victory in our souls, praise God! our little company are all well, and send love to all the dear ones. God bless you all and keep you in the bonds of perfectness. Your sister under the blood, sanctified wholly, free in Jesus. Hallelujah! Amen! much love to all.

Dear Saints: — I praise God to-day for a salvation that saves to the uttermost, and keeps us every moment. Praise the Lord! I know I have complete victory in my soul over everything. Dear Saints: — I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony. I know that Jesus saves me just now, and is leading me by His Spirit. Pro’s Whitcraft, Basore and myself, came to spend a few days with Bro. Hevels; we had a good time with them reasoning on God’s Word.

From there we went to Waterloo and had one meeting. The Lord was with us in power in teaching His Word. We held a few meetings four miles east of there. Many were convicted of sin, but on account of the power of the beast they would not yield to their conviction. From there the Lord led us four miles east of Auburn, Ind. where we met with Bro. Joseph Miller, and the rest of the saints. God blessed the work; and souls were saved, and the saints were strengthened, and the church established. The Lord ordained Bro. Miller Elder, and Bro. Will Meginas Deacon. May God keep the dear ones in that place, is my prayer. From your brother saved, sanctified and under the blood.

To all the dear saints of the Most High God Greeting: — I can say with the rest of you that I am saved, and sanctified, and kept by the mighty power of God. I do thank my God that I ever did come out of old babylon. I am free to do the work of the Lord, whatever it may be. I thank Him for healing my body; I do not take any medicine of any kind, I trust God for everything. Praise His holy name forever! I do not drink any coffee nor tea; it was injuring my health, and I asked God to take the appetite away. I thank him that He did answer my prayer. I want all the saints of God to pray for me that I may hold out faithful till the end, and meet you all in Heaven. From your sister in Christ. God bless you all, is my prayer.

Dear Brethren: — I feel led by the Spirit of God to give in my testimony with yours in honor and glory to God. I am still enjoying the comforts of a Savior’s love shed abroad in my heart. Like poor Peter, I can say blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to His abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. — 1 Peter 1:3.

Blessed be the name of God who giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ over the world, the flesh, and the devil, that old serpent who goeth about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. I thank God that He ever showed me by His wonderful working power, the depth of satan to destroy. Bless God for these encouraging words: “He that is in you is greater than he that is in the world; and if I be for you, who can be against you.” O bless God! Dear ones if we are not permitted to meet on earth to greet one another, if we are true to God our hearts and minds are one; and by the grace of God we will one day meet, and greet one another in the heaven of glory and bliss. O my prayers to God continually are for you who are called according to his purpose to preach the Gospel news, and to preach the everlasting Gospel to dying mortals. I cannot express the feelings of love in my soul. O how much we ought to thank God for the consolation we have through His Son Jesus Christ. God being so good in revealing His Son to us by His mighty power to save. Your Bro. ready to be revealed in the last time.

Dear Brethren: — I feel led to write a few lines to you all, that I am rejoicing in a Savior’s love. I praise God I have power over the world, the flesh, and the three unclean spirits that came out of the mouth of the dragon, and the beast, and the false prophet that is, sectism, free-loveism, and spiritualism. Two years ago this spring I was called out of babylon; the Lord gave me the victory over the beast and his image and the number of his name. Hallelujah to our God! The Lord showed me a vision, after which I picked up God’s Will and opened the Book at Rev. 6:5, 6. Then the Lord let me see the awful sin of sectism, and gave me the spirit of prophecy against mystery babylon, and her harlot daughters. We find it prophesied in Zech. 6. concerning Rev. 6:5, 62.

Praise God for the TRUMPET, and I praise Him that He has some ministers who have wildness to rebuke all evil doings. One year ago this spring the spirit of sectism, and the second beast religion and mormon free-loveism was reigning through this country. At this time I was reading a look called the Flying Rod, and not having an understanding on this spiritualism I was led away by this error, but not so far that when I heard the voice of God when Bro. John N. Slagle, and Bro. Warner rebuked the spirit through the TRUMPET. I was in error, and I prayed the Lord that this thing would depart from me, and he said my grace is sufficient for you. I praise Jesus that His blood cleansed it all away by the acknowledging to the truth; and God shall have all the glory. Therefore my beloved brethren be ye steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord; for as much as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. I am in the true church in the city of our God. All who have come unto Mount Zion should not be unwise; but understanding what the will of the Lord is. After ye have been risen with Christ, place your mind on things above, and not on things of the earth. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace, If we have become spiritually minded we should be careful not to carry the body with the mind. If Christ be in you the body is dead because of sin; but the spirit is life because of righteousness; but the spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you; He that raised up Christ from the dead, shall also quicken your mortal body by His spirit that dwelleth in you. — Rom: 8:6, 10, 11.

Here are the two resurrections. We are resurrected in the spirit but not in the body in this life. There is a city of God that came down out of Heaven, the spiritual kingdom of Christ set up here on earth. And there is a celestial city where God and Christ dwells; and when Christ comes to make up His jewels then our vile bodies shall be changed; then we shall have our celestial bodies to dwell in the celestial city. Your Bro. saved and sanctified by the Holy Ghost.

Dear Brethren: — I feel led to write my testimony. O I just glorify God for saving my soul, and for the spirit of love I do enjoy. O I do bless God for a salvation that saves to the uttermost. O praise God forever, for this evening light that now shines in our soul. Dear saints of God, I was saved and sanctified about three years ago; and glory be to God He has kept me ever since; and I know that He will keep me if I do His will. O how my soul rejoices to read the testimonies of the saints scattered over this land. O my God ever keep us faithful to the end; for we must be in the last days. Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished. — Daniel 12:10, 7.

Dear Brethren: — My testimony this morning is I am saved from all sin; glory to Jesus! I am no preacher, but praise God we all have a place in the body, and each of us have a work to do; and I praise God that He has showed me what my work is, and glory to Jesus I obey God in doing His will. The Lord wonderfully uses companion and I in conversing with people on the Word of God and the plan of salvation. Oh it is wonderful to know the will of God and obey it. I ant doing God’s will every day of my life. Pray for us that we may continue to do God’s will. Oh praise God for this sweet fellowship that cometh from above. May God’s blessings ever abide with you all. Amen! Your saved Bro. under the blood.

Dear Trumpet readers: — I would like to send a word through the TRUMPET to the dear friends of Beaver Dam. I thank them for their kindness to me, though a stranger among them. Yet to the glory of God and honor of Jesus, I will testify, I have been, since the meeting, kept by the power of God soul and body, blameless to this present time. I am sorely tried every day; and every day come out victorious in Jesus, sanctified by the truth. I still have a distressing cough, and I know I can be entirely made whole by the power of God. My voice is not very strong to sing the songs of Zion which I love so well. Will all the saints pray, and continue to pray until the Lord grant health and strength to glorify Him. I would like very much to be in the meeting with you this year if the Lord is willing: I am content with His will. Grace, mercy and peace be multiplied to all the dear saints.

TENTS.

Bro. Henry Latshaw announces that persons wishing to have tents erected on the Big Bend Camp Ground, near Rockland Station, Venango Co. Pa., can be provided with the same, by addressing him at Big Bend, Venango Co. Pa.,

He says: “I will give the ground free to the saints, for five years or longer to hold camp meetings on. I will put up the tents for all that wish them; the lumber will cost $8.00 for a tent 10*12 with floor. I will haul the lumber and find the nails for $10. Larger tents in proportion. Send me the money, and state the size you wish your tent, and you will find the tent according to your order. Order in time, so I will have time to build them. If any one has not the money to send in advance, I am willing to wait on you a reasonable length of time. Be free to write to me about the matter, and tell what kind you want. Come every body that love the Lord, and let us have a glorious meeting; come all and work for Jesus.

I thank God that He has saved me from all sin, and is leading me straight through. I can praise Him for salvation full and free. Address all letters to Big Bend. If money is sent, register the letter. From your Bro. in Christ.

Page 4

ing its observance, did not call it the Lord’s supper, he uses as an argument that Christ instituted no Lord’s supper. This is another artful dodging of the truth. O how rebellious hearts display their ingenuity in evading God’s Word. Can any man, but an awful infidel and a quaker, deny that the Son of God gave the disciples bread and wine, which he told them was his broken body, and “His blood of the New Testament,” and told them to eat this bread and drink this cup thereby showing forth His death till He come? Who does deny this but men who deny the Word of God? Again, who but quakers and infidels deny that Paul received exactly the same command from Christ, enjoins it upon the Corinthian Church, and there calls it the “Lord’s supper.” What difference does it make to honest hearts whether Christ called it the Lord’s supper or not? Just so he clearly described the act, and positively commanded its observance. It cannot be denied that Christ said, “this do.” And it cannot be denied, except by men desperately determined to fight for their babel creed, in the very face of the Word of God, that the inspired Apostle of Christ, describes the identical thing that Christ said we should do, and denominates it the “Lord’s supper,” enjoining the same upon the Church, and asserting that he “received it from the Lord.” That, we say, is all plain enough for any man who wishes to know and do the will of Christ. But a heart that is badly diseased with “rebellion (which) is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubborness (which) is as iniquity and idolatry.” — 1 Sam. 15:23. Such a heart cannot believe the words of our Lord Jesus Christ. Such have not the commands of the Lord. “But he that hath my commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me,” saith the Lord.

The writer observes that “In the the Greek word ordinance as given here in 1 Cor. 11:12 is paradosis, meaning oral teaching handed down by word of mouth.” Again he says, “The commandments of Jesus are not called dogma or dikaroma, but paradosis, entoleh, or a term which signifies example, precept, or instruction.” The reader will observe that he admits that the word rendered “ordinance” in the above text, is the regular word that Jesus uses to enjoin His positive precepts and examples. What was the Lord’s supper but an institution set forth by the example and precepts of Christ? What was Christ’s command to Paul but a paradosis — oral teaching? What had been Paul’s command to the Corinthian Church, to observe the Lord’s supper but a paradosis, an oral teaching, precept and example of Christ Or does the Yarn line editor imagine that Paul instructed the people by written sermons, like babylon priests. Thus his admissions only prove the apostolic position true, the Lord’s supper was taught by precept and example both by Christ and His apostles. The man asserts the same falsehood over he did in his former article, that Paul spake “not favorably of” of the Lord’s supper in 1 Cor. 11:20. I do pity men who expose their souls to the wrath of God, by gainsaying and subverting His awful truth. That man is certainly capable of reading plain English, therefore he certainly knows that what Paul spake against was not the Lord’s supper at all, but their own meals. But he tells them plainly what is the Lord’s supper, what he did receive from the Lord, namely the bread and wine only, and no honest man in his right mind dare say that Paul spake against this.

This blind priest says: “We understand that D. S. Warner is an able and eloquent pulpit orator, as indeed, are the majority of the ‘dumb dogs’ which the prophet Isaiah so graphically describes.”

What utter nonsense. The prophet says these “dumb dogs” “cannot bark.” But this teacher, to include us with dumb dogs reverses his description and says they are “able and eloquent.”

The man has not been able to answer the Scriptures at all that we adduced against his false theory. Neither has he pointed to one verse in the Law that sets forth any one of the three ordinances of the New Testament. Neither he nor Lyman Johnson have ventured to accept our proposition to jointly investigate this subject, and send both sides to both their and our readers. They know very well their theory cannot stand the scrutiny of God’s Word, and the being of the spirit of error, are necessarily cowards and unwilling to let us lay the Word of God before their readers, and expose their heresy. They do not even dare to put the address of their correspondents in their paper for fear some one will give them too much light to longer hold their errors. The following extract from a little paper called the “Messenger of Love,” published at Decatur Kan., will do them good to read and consider.

“In an exchange that is in most points free from sectarianism we are recently surprised to see given as a reason, for not giving the name in full of its correspondents, the statement that were they given, a flood of other papers unorthodox in doctrine, would be sent in upon them. Well, if we lad any pet doctrines, or idolized, but tender theories of our own to advocate or defend, we should act in just that way.

God says in His Word, ‘Judgment will I lay to the line and righteousness will I ay to the plummet, and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies etc.’ If we mistake not the import of eternal truth, no man need to, fear but he who is conscious of having sand beneath his feet. God promises again to shake Heaven and earth: and the purpose is that the things that are shakable may be taken away. Now it is the characteristic of most of those who begin to feel shaky to build at once a creed sect wall to keep intruders out. We must confess however that we can see little difference between building a creed wall and building a secrecy wall when the object of both is the same, namely, to instill our own teachings into a certain class of people and to exclude other people from all access to them. Now, beloved, if the Messenger teaches erroneous doctrine, turn upon it the hail stones of the divine Word. Rest assured, God’s eternal, unchangable truth is invincible; and though seemingly trodden in the dust will prove victorious even in defeat, and like the omnipotent God whose it is, sweep on victorious until every vestige of error is swept away. We are not afraid of your doctrines, and do not fear to publish our mailing lists in full. We have no doctrine that we are not sure is sustained by God’s Word, and none that we will not gladly see overthrown if not so sustained.

Beloved, let us dismiss our fears and our prejudices, come up to the plain of candid, honest, impartial investigation of the Word of God, with our motto, not theory, creed, or opinion, but truth.”

ROMANISM EXPOSED.

—:o:—

Dear Readers of The Trumpet: — Grace be unto you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ according as He hath chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love. I have had the desire to write a few words of testimony for some time on this most glorious light which the Lord has bestowed upon me, both by reading and personal experience; as I have said before in my testimony, my deliverance from the old mother Rome which the Romans call the Catholic church. I feel it is to the glory of God to tell the difference between the holy Catholic Church and the mother of Rome. I will first give you the explanation of the Catholic Church, which was established by Christ Himself, and then He left it to His Disciples and they had charge of it until the mother of harlots came out who blasphemed against God by destroying the holy ones of God and establishing her kingdom in place of it. The holy Catholic Church is that company of people who profess and believe in the true God, and worship and serve Him according to His will. God chose such a people in Abraham and his family; the Jewish nation was the Church of God until the time of Christ: but now the Church is not one nation only, but is Catholic, that is, general, universal, spread over the whole earth.

Oar Lord told His Disciples to teach all nations and bring them into the Church by repentance and baptism. Matt. 28:18, 19. Acts 2:41. Mark 16:16. So that now the Catholic Church consists of all those that are sanctified, that are made holy in Christ Jesus; this is the Church which outside of her, God promises no salvation, but great condemnation to all those who have their name written in the books of this world, which is the mark of the beast. Rev. 13:16-18. This Catholic Church is holy because it teaches holy doctrine, publishes holy laws, performs holy worship, administers holy sacrament, requires all its Members to be holy, and above all, because of its most holy head, Jesus Christ. Eph. 5:23. All its members called to be saints, Rom. 1:7. The Scripture teaches us this Church our Lord has purchased with His own blood. Acts 20:28. And He looks upon it as His own Body which He as the head, Col. 1:18, guides by His Holy Spirit, by the work of the ministers He has ordained and by the sacraments John 14:16, 17. 1 Cor. 2:10, 11. Eph. 4:11, 12. 1 Cor. 12:28. In this Church there is a communion of saints; we believe that all who are made holy while they live among men and struggle with the miseries of this life have fellowship with God the Father, 1 John 1:3. 2 Peter 1:4. 1 John 4:13-15, with God the Son, 1 John 1:3. John 17:20-23, and with God the Holy Ghost. Phil. 2:1. 2 Cor. 13, 14. John 14:17. 1 Cor. 3:16. As dwelling with them they partake of the care of the blessed angels who are sent to minister to those who shall be heirs of salvation Heb. 1:14. Matt. 18:10. Luke 15:10. And besides the outward fellowship which we have in the Word of God, and the ordinances which Christ has commanded us to keep in remembrance of Him, and all the saints to have a close and inward union with each other as members of Christ’s body. 1 Cor. 12:12-27. Col. 2:19. A union that is in no way broken by distance nor death. Christ is the bond of union, which binds all together in one so that the closer we walk with Christ in real holiness of life, the closer is our fellowship with Him. Dear readers there are many things more could be said on this subject, which by the grace of God I shall be able to continue. I just now want to say a few words regarding the corruption of mother Rome. Our Savior says come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Matt. 11:28. The priests of Rome say “come to our confessional boxes and tell us all that you have done in your life and your sins shall be forgiven you. And also we find in the Scripture that there is only one mediator between God and man. The man Christ Jesus. 1 Tim. 2:5. The Pope of Rome tells his people that he stands in the place of our Savior in this world; whatever he says must be done or else they will not be accepted by God.

What a terrible lie of the devil, to make his poor ignorant people believe such stuff as this, when he knows himself that these things are contrary to the Word of God.

The Pope and his host of priests shut up the Kingdom of Heaven against their people, for they neither go in themselves, nor suffer any that are entering to go in Matt. 23:13. We read in the Scripture that the gifts of God cannot be bought with money, Acts 8:20, but the priest will tell his people that they cannot do anything without money; they will not pray, say mass nor baptize: and they will not pray the souls of their poor ignorant people out of purgatory, which is another trap that the devil and the Pope of Rome have invented to deceive the people, and get their money away from them, and scare them out of the righteous way and to open the doors of hell before them.

Many other things in Roman performance has to he bought with money, which has nothing to do with the will of God; and also the Scripture forbids us to bow down before anything of this world, or beneath or above; nor make any offering of prayers to any thing but God only. Ex.20:4, 5. Rev. 22:8. Acts 10:25.

And this great mother of evil tells her people to bow before man to ask the forgiveness of their sins, and also bowing before pictures of God and saints, and pray before them so that saints which the pictures represent will intercede for them before God, for what they are praying to obtain. The priests and saints, and pictures of al descriptions is their worship; so they pray to the Almighty and true God only when they have no one else to pray to. We are told to search the Scriptures for in them ye think ye have eternal life, and they are they who testify of me. John 5:39. Acts 17:11. The priest of the mother of harlots teaches her people that no one has been converted since Christ departed from this world; they also forbid their people to read the Scripture except in their own translation. If any doubt these things are not as they are represented they can read Dr. James Butler’s Catechism. The Scripture says, He that commiteth sin is of the devil. 1 John 3:8. And the priests teach their people that no one on earth except the Pope of Rome cau live free from sin; at this rate their bishops and priests are sinners and they of the devil and spiritually blind. Now let us see what the Scripture says about this: If the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch; Matt. 15:14, which is the pit of hell, God has prepared for the devil and his angels.

Dear readers, let as many Romans as possible read these few words so that it may be a help to them, in opening then spiritual eyes; then they will see the difference between the Church of the Living God, and the darkness of the mother of harlots. I know how to sympathize with all her people, for I have suffered for many years, under the bondage of Rome; and I have seen by long years experience, that it is nothing but the cage of the devil, filled with all kinds of filthiness of the flesh and spirit of blasphemy. They are without God, and without hope in the world, and hell is wide open waiting for them. But now I praise the Lord for a happy life and a salvation that gives us victory over the world, the flesh and the devil, which I found through the atonement of the precious blood of my Savior. Your Bro saved and sanctified through the precious blood of the Redeemer.

FOLLOW THE SPIRIT.

MAY the blessings of God rest and abide with all the dear saints of God forever. Truly the Holy Spirit leads by impressions on the mind. The Lord has clearly shown me many times a duty to do; I would think it was possibly of my own mind, but lately there has been some things before me and I did not heed the impression, and the Lord chastened me. I was so sick that I felt as if the Lord had left me; He brought the impressions before me and I was very restless all night. But the next night I said, it is enough I will go and do His will. Then I began to feel better, and I started. The first was to visit a sick woman; once before for four months it was before me to visit a sect brother, and when I did go I got the victory. The Lord has clearly shown me in this way what my work is for, when I would go to some place, where impressed to go, the Lord would bless me wonderfully.

The Word says, “He will put His laws in our minds, and write them in our hearts.” So when anything continues to come up in my mind and I do it, I have the victory. O, I praise God for His rich blessings to His children! If we are in earnest in the matter, He will manifest Himself to us. I am saved, sanctified and under the blood continually; may the Lord send some one here who is a firebrand for God. There has never yet been any one of the saints here to preach, and I believe there could be some good done here. Your Bro. and sister in Christ Jesus.

Praise the Lord and bless His holy name. To the dear brethren in Christ Jesus and all the dear saints that are living in the faith and to all that are lifting up holy hands to the Lord, greeting. Praise God for the glorious work of God’s free people! What God has made free is free indeed.

Glory to God and the Lamb, who died to redeem my soul! I was for some years bound by a sect tribe who called themselves, River Brethren. They boast of their righteousness and forms; thank God for opening our eyes to see them before too late. Dear brethren, they put five of us out of their sect, for not bowing down to their rules and forms. Thanks be to God, He never leaves His little ones; nothing shall pluck them out of His hand. I am done with al sects, creeds and their forms; I want to be all for Christ and nothing for man. Let God be true and every man a liar. I praise God for His commandments, and that He gives us new grace and love to do His will in all things. Thanks be to God for the good news from the field, and for the encouraging words that come from our dearly beloved uncle and aunt, A. Byers, who live near Albany Ill., Pray for me that I may keep my eyes on Jesus. Yours in Christ.

Dear Brethren: — I have for some time thought of writing my testimony. God called me to repentance, and for Christ’s sake forgave my sins, which is the end of the law, to every one that believeth for righteousness. When I presented my body a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto the Lord; after which the sanctifier was put in my heart by the baptism of the Holy Ghost and fire, and as a witness to my perfection. I was resting beneath the cherubims of glory when this witness came to me. Glory to Jesus for a complete deliverance. It is only when the eye is single that the body is full of light, and it is only when the eye is single the vessel is meet for the Master’s use.

God showed me the abomination spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place which is human organization. The Lord has revealed babylon to me, and her abominable works; and there is all manner of deceived spirits in her handling the Word of God deceitfully, which has caused a spiritual famine; satan has entered the sects, and there he lies in glory, and causes people to eat forbidden fruit: which is all manner of unbelief. The reason of this trouble is, man fails to get into the cleansing pool, that will destroy the old heart root, that venomous old serpent, that lies buried out of man’s sight in his heart, at which nothing is able to extract but the sanctifier.

Hallelujah for victory over death, hell and the grave. God makes His ministers by the baptism of the Holy Ghost and fire, of which the gates of hell shall not prevail against. I see this is the feast of the ingathering.

The powers of darkness is so thick in this place, there seems to be a place for every thing but God’s people; they are the despised little band. They do not dare to buy or sell, save they have the mark of the beast. Well glory to Jesus! the Son of God is the good Shepherd, and His sheep hear Has voice, and a stranger will they not follow. There are only three of us here that are delivered from the beast and his works. A prophet in his own country is not accepted. There will be a general awakening, when every knee shall how, and every tongue shall confess; and then it will be manifest who the blind idolatrous worshipers are. Oh praise God for power over all unclean spirits. I have found His grace sufficient for every obstacle that comes in my way: but it takes a complete faith. I know God has power on earth to deliver us out of the hands of our enemies. And there is nothing able to pluck us out of the Father’s hands only our will. I ask all the saints to pray for me. Your sister under the blood.

Dearly Beloved Saints: — I feel led by the Spirit to testify to what the Lord has done for me. Bless the name of Jesus! I was sick and He healed me. Oh praise God for the healing power He gives to all who firmly believe on Him. My soul is filled with the love of God. I do praise His holy name that He ever put it in the mind of my son to send me the GOSPEL TRUMPET, which sent a gleam of light along my pathway; for I had long felt there was something better surely than my past experience, and was made to realize that the Lord will provide for those who trust Him. Oh how I do praise His holy name for this blessed evening light. I am sixty years old, but the Lord has wonderfully spared me to see the true salvation of Christ Jesus.

“This is the way I long have sought,
And mourned because I found it not.”

But the way is bright and glorious now. Oh that a wave of salvation may roll over this place that will shake it to its very center, and cause sinners to cry out: “Oh what shall we do to be saved?” but I will trust in the Lord; in His own good time He will provide a way that we may hear the true Gospel of Jesus preached as it was by the Apostles.

May God bless all the dear saints; may they be filled with the power of God, and the Holy Ghost every day; giving God all the glory. I would ask the dear saints to pray for the people at this place; and pray for me that I may never do any thing to lower the blood stained banner of Jesus; but ever striving to raise it higher, and do the will of my heavenly Father. Your sister cleansed and healed through the blood of Christ.

Dear Saints: — I believe it will glorify God if I write a little of my experience.

Praise the Lord I have the Holy Spirit in my heart just now. I am continually under the blood. Glory be to Jesus for the sweet rest in my soul. The Lord has healed my eyes, by laying on of hands, anointing with oil and prayer, by Bro. Warner and company. Oh praise the Lord for His goodness to the children of men. I am out of babylon and babylon out of me; and am kept free from sin. Hallelujah!

Andrew Byers.
