The Two Experiences In Contrast.

—:o:—

The first gives back our innocence,
Brings peace to troubled hearts;
The second strikes the root of sin
And purity imparts.

The first work chains the old man down,
Gives vict’ry over sin;
The second deals the deadly blow,
That slays our foe within.

The first is holiness begun,
That’s wonderful indeed;
But then the second work of Grace,
The first doth far exceed.

The first one takes our guilt away,
And subjugates the will;
The first one makes us white as snow,
The second whiter still.

The first gives light when darkness reigns
And life unto the dead;
The second-with all darkness gone-
Brings nought but light instead.

The first one Egypt’s bondage breaks,
And says to souls go free;
The second canaan’s borders reach,
From whence our home we see.

The first gives us a ticket through
To Heaven’s border land;
The second fits us for our place,
Around God’s Throne to stand.

The first is Jesus come to bless,
To take away the past;
The second is our sabbath rest,
’Tis Jesus first and last.

THE BRIDE OF CHRIST.

Continued from last issue.

_____

If the faint gleams of truth in the cloudy day, under the preaching of John Huss and Martin Luther, made manifest the serpent antichrist, how much more in the last days when many are running to and fro and knowledge is being increased? If the whole truth were preached to-day, and nothing but the truth, it would have the same effect it has always had in making manifest the true Church and driving out the false. I feel very thankful to God for His kindness to me in committing to me a dispensation of the Gospel: and for the space of several years I have yet to see Christ fail to confirm the Word of His messenger, while preaching this doctrine among others, “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles; whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.’’ — 1 Cor. 12:13.

“For thus saith the Lord God: Behold I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out.”

“As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered, so will I seek out my sheep and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day” — Eze. 34:11, 12. The multitude of man-made pens, invented by shepherds who “served themselves of them,” have resulted in dividing and scattering God’s sheep, and mixing them unequally with other animals, such as goats, dogs and wolves; which mixture God has forbidden. “Lo the people shall dwell alone; they shall not he reckoned among the nations.” Hence God’s anger in Eze. 34, against shepherds who have been the means of this scattered condition of God’s Church.

“The dark places of the earth are full of the habitations of cruelty” says the Psalmist. And this word is truth when applied to these modem slaughter pens, called churches. As an M. E. holiness man — J. A. Wood — has said: “I have seen a sight sad enough to make angels weep and hell hold a jubilee, to see a young convert go into these iceburg churches to be surprised at first, then to sink down in spiritual death, to make another layer of the frozen strata.” This is the substance of the words of this witness, and this testimony is true.

“My people hath been lost sheep; their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains: they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their resting-place.” — Jer 50:6.

Although scattered in the fogs of babylon confusion, there are many precious promises which point to a time when they shall return again to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads; a time when a remnant of God’s scattered sheep will be brought into the one fold by the one Shepherd, and God’s Church again restored to her apostolic light, unity, and power.

“Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land: and I will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all: and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all.” — Eze. 37:21, 22.

“That in the dispensation of the fulness of times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth, even in Him.” — Eph. 1:10.

“Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing; for they shall see eye to eye when the Lord shall bring again Zion.”

Zion of course means the Church, the body of Christ. The prophets shall see eye to eye. They shall be perfectly joined together in the same mind, and in the same judgment. “For,” says Paul to the Corinthians, “whereas there are conditions among you are ye not carnal?” While one saith I am for Paul, and I for Apollos, and I for Cephas, and I for Christ.

Now’ the outward confusion and mixture of God’s Church in sect babylon is the result of inward confusion or mixture in the soul. Destroy the inward babel or mixture and the outward is also destroyed. But one condition of having the inward destroyed, is separation from the outward mixture of man-named churches, whether they be named after Paul, or Wesley, or Otterbein, or whosoever it may be.

Praise God! the mists of carnality in the soul have been washed away from my soul by the precious blood, and the day- star has arisen in the temple. See 2nd Peter 1:10.

“The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness” — Matt. 6:22, 23. Here we see the person who is in the light is unmixed in clearness, while the sinner is darkness. Nevertheless there is a place in the process of salvation, between clear noontide light and the sinner’s condition of darkness; that place is the justified relation.

“When the light in my soul with the darkness mas blent, ever longed for an unclouded day.”

“If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.” — Luke 11:36.

Thus we see there can he a mixture, “having part dark,” owing to remaining carnality — “the sin in which my mother conceived me.” The root of bitterness not being extracted at conversion, leaves elements of darkness in the soul, needing to be purged away by the second grace. This was the condition of the disciples when the vision of the kingdom was given them.

“And after six days Jesus taketh Peter and James and John His brother, and bringeth them up into a high mountain apart, and was transfigured before them, And His raiment was white as the light, and behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with Him.

“Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt: let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. While He yet spake, behold a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold, a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye Him. And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid. And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid. And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.”

Here we see the disciples with mingled light in their souls, and but dim views of Christ’s kingdom. And in the next verse Jesus commands them to tell no man the vision until He was risen from the dead. And not until Jesus was raised and glorified, and their souls purged from carnality by the cleansing blood, and had received the fulness of the Spirit, sanctifying them wholly, did they have a clear understanding of the kingdom of Christ, and see none save Jesus only, as the fulness of Him that filleth all and in all. At the time of the vision in their ignorance they desired to build tabernacles to Moses and Elias as well as to Christ. But is Christ divided? Thanks be to God for the unspeakable gift of the Day-star, which drives away all shades of night, and. enables us to see none save Jesus only.

The second grace extracts all roots of envy and jealous contention and party spirit. Entire sanctification “will destroy all sects and denominations,” says one writer in babylon, “for they are all either directly or indirectly the result of sin.

This witness is true. If differences exist, it is because of unbelief in appropriating His fulness of wisdom and understanding, “for it pleased the Father that in Him should all fulness dwell.

“Amazing grace, ’tis heav’n below
To feel the blood applied;
And Jesus, only Jesus know,
My Jesus crucified.’’

Thanks be to God, there are abundant provisions in Jesus and His blessed Word, (into which we are guided by the Spirit of truth), to do away with all sect legislation, and ecclesiastical machinery.

We are very grateful to God that He is bringing His bride up to the standard of unmixed purity and oneness in these last days. “He that is joined to the Lord is one Spirit” (1 Cor. 6:17) is the standard of the Word of God with the questions in the previous verses.

“What know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid. What know ye not that he which is joined to a harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall he one flesh.” God forbid that the members of Christ’s body should any longer be yoked in any such corrupt mixtures of harlot churches.

But some man will say, “Are not the tares to grow with the wheat until the harvest?” Yes, in the world but not in the Church. The field is the world There are no tares in God’s Church, in the shape of sinners, and every plant which my heavenly Father hath not planted shall be rooted up — the root of bitterness, original sin. I have just finished reading part of Fleetwood’s “Life of Christ,” and there we read in the life of one of the early Christians, where the doctrine first came into the early Church, which justified a mixed Church. It was brought in by a bishop, it says, (he being an old hypocrite), taken from a false view of the parable of the fares and wheat, in the year A. D. 220. This confusion is the result of an apostasy. Oh how God longs, and how Christ prays, for the oneness of the Church; and His holy jealousy against His bride being unequally yoked together with harlot bodies is great. God help all His little ones to see the separation He requires.

“Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers * * * and agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.”

Here He makes separation one condition upon which He receives us, and in the 2nd verse of this chapter (2nd Cor. 6) He makes faith the other condition, when He says, “Now is the accepted time, now is the day of salvation;” salvation from all inward mixtures, and liabilities to receive the grace of God in vain, by having roots of carnality in the soul. Hence the two conditions of faith and separation, for becoming perfect in holiness. “Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” — 2 Cor. 7:1. Our part is to cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh, and separate from all unholy mixtures, and God will cleanse the inside from all mixed elements. God promises to be the glory in the midst of His Church, but in order to be this to the members of Christ’s body, He must have them separated from all sinners. In Zech. 2:6, 7 He gives an exhortation to flee out of babylon or confusion. “Ho, ho, come forth, and flee from the land of the north, saith the Lord: for I have spread you abroad as the four winds of the heaven, saith the Lord. Deliver thyself, O Zion, that dwellest with the daughter of babylon.” God hates a mixture, and babylon means confusion and mixture; and the many who remain in her in these days of sevenfold light, are not keeping up with God. God is moving on, and those who do not keep up with the Lord will be left behind with the stragglers in the wilderness.

“Who is this coming up out of the wilerness leaning upon the arm of her Beloved? The Bride of Christ.

My people go ye out of the midst of her (babylon) and deliver every man his soul from the fierce anger of the Lord.” — Jer. 51:4, 5.

“And he cried mightily with a strong voice saying, babylon the great is fallen is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and the cage of every unclean and hateful bird.

And I heard another voice from Heaven saying, come out of her, my people that ye be not partakers of her sins and that ye receive not of her plagues.” — Rev. 18:1-4.

God has a people in sect babylon; hence the exhortation to come out of her. This harlot church, full of fornication’ and compromises with the world.

“She hath given her hand; forsake her and let us go every man to his own country.” This which biship Foster calls the so called church and which he says “is courting the world, fairs, festivals, nude and lude art, and having a time serving ministry, giving popular lectures, etc. has frozen spirituality to death.” Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them the members of an harlot?

O the wonderful oneness God is bringing about in His Church, in these last days. “He that is joined to the Lord is one Spirit.”

There is one body and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling. One Lord, one faith, one baptism.” Thus we see the oneness between belivers, Christ and His bride. The bride of Christ must be pure even as He is pure, and all elements of carnality cleansed out of the soul.

“No spots on her countenance in that day.”

“Thou art all fair, my love, there is no spot in thee.” Is the song of Christ to the Church in Can. 4:7. And this is the standard to which every member of Christ’s body must come in this world, in order to be “pure even as He is pure.” — 1 Jno. 3:3. “Husbands love your wives, even as Christ loved the Church, and gave Himself for it, that He might sanctify and cleanse it by the washing of water by the Word, that He might present it to Himself a glorious Church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

So ought men to love their wives, as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife, loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the Church; For we are members of His body of His flesh and of His bones. For this cause shall a man leave his Father and Mother and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the Church.” — Eph. 5:25—32.

“Sanctify them through thy truth, thy Word is truth. That they all maybe one; as thou Father art in me and I in Thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may belive that Thou hast sent Me.

And the glory that Thou hast given me, I have given them, that they may be one, even as we are one.

“I in them and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one: that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them as thou hast loved me.”

“Father, I will that they also, whom then hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory: which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.” — John 17:17, 21-24.

This prayer for His Church was answered in the sanctification of the early disciples, and God promises to have it fulfilled in a sevenfold sense, when the son of perdition, the man of sin, the representative of sect apostacy is revealed, and made manifest, when all the fogs and mists, which have obscured the oneness of God’s Church, is again made to sit in primitive purity and unity, with Jesus in the heavens.

“But it shall be one day which shall be known to the Lord, not day, nor night; but it shall come to pass, at evening time it shall be light.” — Zech. 14:7.

This refers to the time of protestantism, or day in which the lights of Christ’s Church were mixed or clouded, with a promise that in the evening time of this dispensation it will again be clear light.

“And there shall be upon every high mountain, and upon every high hill, rivers and streams of water in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall, Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be seven fold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the Lord bindeth up the breach of His people and healeth the stroke of their wounds.” — Isa 30:25, 26.

“Violence shall no more be heard in the land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls salvation, and thy gates praise. The sun shall no more be thy light by day, neither for brightness shall the moon give her light unto thee; but the Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory.”

Glory to Jesus! the Lord is my glory and I glory in Him. Thy sun shall no more go down: neither will thy moon withdraw itself; for the Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.” — Isa. 60:18, 20. Yes for all mourning has passed away, all clouds and dark seasons, all doubts and fears. This discribes the Church returned from the wilderness of babylon confusion into her own land. “Thy land shall be called beaulah;” that is married. Oh sweet relation, precious Christ! For I, saith the Lord, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her.” — Zee. 2:5. This is brought to pass, by the Lord filling the temple with Himself. Although the heaven can not contain Him, and, in the language of Stephen, Howbeit the Almighty dwelleth not in temples made by hands,” yet he condescends to fill us so full of His glory, that we are constrained to say with the prophet: “Thou art exalted above all praise,” and our poor language is too slow to keep up with the praises that press themselves out of the fullness of a pure heart. Glory to God!

And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come, and I will fill this house with glory saith the Lord of hosts.

“The silver is mine, the gold also is mine, saith the Lord of hosts. The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the Lord of hosts, and in this place will I give peace.” — Hag. 2:7-9. “Whose house ye are.” — Heb. 3:6.

Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God, and are built noon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner stone. In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord, in whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

NEW CHURCH TRACT.

—:o:—

WE have just printed a new tract by D. S. Warner, of nearly 40 pages the size of the Sabbath tract. It is carefully written, and very forcibly shows, the Divine origin, foundation, head, door, membership, organization, holiness, and unity of the Church, and the basis of unity. It also distinguishes between the True Church, and all sects. Shows the evil of Schisms, and proves the perfection and practicability of the Church, as founded by Christ, and set forth in the New Testament, without any man-made machinery, creeds, systems and manipulations. It refutes the falsehood that we have to be a sect, and nails every thing down to the Word.

Would to God that we could send it free every where. But it costs paper, ink, mailing expense etc. But we put it down just as cheap as we can, to cover expenses, and what we may give to the poor who cannot pay.

Camp and Grove Meeting List.

—+o+—

BANGOR CAMP-MEETING

JUNE 12-21. THE time is drawing nigh for this meeting. A glorious time is expected. The saints round about here are pretty generally aglow with the Spirit. Meetings are being held all around, with success at every point. The Lord seems to be at work about here. I hope the devil will not persuade so many of God’s children that they are not able to attend the meeting, and tent on the ground, as he so disgustingly fooled many last year. There should be three times the number of tents on the ground this year. Resist the devil, come up to the feast, and help to rescue perishing souls, pitch your tent in the name of Jesus, and get the great benefit.

A boarding tent will doubtless be on the ground. The building Bro. Palmer spake of is being erected. Some, we learn have responded, let others do so at once.

The Michigan Railway Association has granted one and one-third rates to persons attending the Bangor Camp-meeting.

These rates will probably be given only on the Michigan Central and Chicago and West Michigan R. R. Tickets will be sold so as to give ample time to reach the meeting, good until the 25th. We hope to see a host of saints from every direction. We have no great men to announce, to draw the people; but greater than all Jesus will be present on that ground throughout the meeting. “Come and see.” Saints coming from the east or west on the Mich. Central can stop here at Grand Junction, and there will be teams to take you out. From the north on the Chicago & West Mich., stop at Breedsville, which is but two miles from camp. From the south, stop at Bangor, also two miles from camp. Teams will be at trains the first day of the meeting — June 12th. Persons coming before or after then, had better write and inform Bro John Harris, Bangor, Mich. Persons coming from the west can come to South Haven, Mich.; from Chicago by the steamboat “H. W Williams,” of South Haven, for $1.00. Boat leaves Chicago at 9 o’clock at night, on Sabbath, Tuesday, and Thursday nights. Any one coming that way notify Bro. S. Michels at South Haven, Mich., and you will be met in South Haven.

The Lord bring out a great convocation of saints and hungry sinners. Come in strong faith that God will do a mighty work. Persons from afar who have not the means to pay board will be freely fed. Come, in the name of Jesus, all who love God, and all who would seek to know Him and His great salvation. We expect the best camp-meeting there has ever yet been. All glory to the King Eternal. Amen!

THERE will be a camp-meeting at Osawatomie, Kan. June, 26th. to July 15th, All are invited. We hope there will be many of the saints in Kan. to attend the meeting.

Yours in Christ.

W. A. Moore,

Westphalia, Kansas.

A GROVE MEETING

IN Johnstown, Barry Co., Mich., is called for by Bro. Y7. H. Merritt of Bedford, Calhoun Co., Mich. He says there are saints living at that place who desire the meeting. The time of this meeting will be June 25-30. Persons coming by R. R. will be met at Battle Creek, Mich., if they give due notice to Bro. Merrit. A general invitation is sent to saints.

About the same time there should be a camp-meeting in Gratiot Go. Mich. Wish we could announce it now, but have received no word that we know of. After the Beaver Dam Camp-meeting, you will see from the following notices, that the field forces principally march to the east and south-east. The next great feast will be,

BEAVER DAM, IND.

This meeting will be held the Lord willing, Aug. 1-8, ’89.

This beautiful camp is in the east edge of Fulton Co., Ind. Mentone on the Nickle Plate R. R., is the nearest station north. Akron on the Chicago and Atlantic is a few miles to the south. Rochester on the Lake Erie and Western R. R., is about 8 miles west. All coming to the former places, notify Bro. Geo. S. Bryant, Akron, Ind. Those coming to Rochester, inform Bro. David Leininger. Akron, Ind. State the time. The saints have a beautiful grove, good pavillion with comfortable seats. The person who is in fellowship with the God of the Bible, will find an extensive degree of heaven on this camp-ground. We rejoice in the prospect of enjoying that glorious feast before our company starts to the Atlantic coast. A boarding tent will be on the ground, and all who are poor, and worthy, will be provided for freely. We hope to see a large assembly of the “holy people” met there, and showers of blessings come down on all our souls. Amen!

JERRY CITY, OHIO. CAMP-MEETING.

At the close of the Beaver Dam meeting, the Lord wants one force, which will probably consist of Bro’s Palmer, Kilpatrick, and Speck, to go to Jerry City Wood Co., Ohio Camp-meeting, which will be Aug. 9-18, ’89. Address Bro. Wm. H. Miller, Jerry City, Ohio. More particulars in the future. From here the same messengers of the Kingdom to

RED LYON, PA. CAMP-MEETING,

WHICH will begin, the Lord willing, Aug. 20, and last nine days. Address Bro. Samuel Martz, Pittsville, Venango Co., Pa. More particulars in the future.

Then from the Beaver Dam camp another company of workers is called of the Lord to a campaign leading to the southeast, first to a

GROVE MEETING AT ROANOKE.

THE time will be August 9-15. The brethren there have secured a beautiful grove close to the town, supplied with good water. Roanoke is in Huntington Co., Ind., and on the Toledo, Wabash, & Western R. R., not very far west of Ft. Wayne, Ind. Just who the Lord will set on this line of march we do not yet know. Address Bro. J. W. Zent, Roanoke Ind. The same force will next go on to Randolph Co.

CAMP-MEETING NEAR DEERFIELD, IND.

August 16—25, In a beautiful grove, on the farm of Bro. Samuel Grow, a short distance east of Deerfield, Ind. Arrangements are being made to prepare the ground, and all desiring lumber tents, on the ground, can have them put up by stating what kind of a one is wanted, and make calculations, how much the material will cost, and send the money to Bro. H. C. Wickersham, New Pittsburg, Randolph, Co. Ind. and they will be erected free of charge. Saints from all parts are invited to come and tent on the ground. If you cannot tent, come any how, and you will be taken care of, in the name of the Lord.

GROVE-MEETING NEAR SIDNEY, OHIO.

AUG. 27 to SEPT. 2 ’89. Concerning which Bro. A. J. Fosnight of Sidney Ohio, writes: “We have a beautiful grove. We expect to build one large tent on the ground to accommodate as many as possible. We expect a number of the saints from all parts. We believe it is the will of God to send us some workers that have not been here before, but we welcome whoever He may send. The saints here are all very free, and we say, come all that can.”

AT RIDGEVILLE, HENRY CO., OHIO,

THERE is a call for a grove-meeting. A brother that can speak the German language is much desired there. We do not know when this meeting can be held. The Lord move some one to send the appointment. If any brother will say when he can go there, we feel assured that Bro. Spackey of Jerry City Ohio will go and deliver the Lord’s message in German. Some one please to respond this call, and in form us, and

Bro. John Brodbeck, Archbold, Fulton Co., Ohio.

GOD’S JUDGMENTS MANIFEST.

—@

“And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and His Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day, and shall consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body: and they shall be as when a standard-bearer fainteth.” — Isa. 10:17, 18.

“Behold, at that time I will undo all that afflict thee: and I will save her that halteth, and gather her that was driven out; and I will get them praise and fame in every land where they have been put to shame.” — Zeph. 3:19.

Last summer an ungodly sect priest on the Red Lyon Pa. camp ground, showed a hateful contempt for the Word of God which teaches that we should be free from sin, and live without commiting sin. Not long after he was engaged in hauling brick to build a house, when the hot bricks fell upon him and buried him; he was hardly rescued with his life, being burned in some places to the bones. He doubtless felt when roasting beneath the hot bricks, that he had better stop his life sinning daily in word thought and deed, as he had so boldly professed to live before. At any rate we heard that he confessed that if God had mercy on him and permitted him to recover he would try to live a better life, it would do many more sinful preachers good to get slightly roasted beneath hot bricks, lest they get in a still hotter place.

Another Masonic M. E. preacher in Pa. was an enemy of the truth, and of the saints. Last fall he was placed on a new field, where he was not even wanted by his sect. He walked over to the depot to see if his household goods had arrived, while walking on the R. R. track, a fast train came up. They whistled and rang the bell, but that moment the man seemed mysteriously deaf, and was dashed into eternity.

Another instance we quote from a letter. “I labored last with a brother in the extreme East part of Pa. who had been in the Dutch Reformed church, or sect, and had been put out for bolding revival meetings. When they put him out their council sat up a good part of one night, to try him, and he was in their midst like a lamb among wolves. Two of them hated him so that they wanted to live to kill him. But the Lord killed them. In a few days one or both of them died.”

Let all men who fight against God and His children, and breath out their wicked threats against the saints of God take warning. The Lord fighteth for His people, and He can soon lay the presumptuous low by the stroke of His judgment.

EVIL WORKERS.

—:o:—

Is it possible that the saints of God have not yet, in some instances, waked up to the fact that satan has sent forth swarms of evil workers to decive souls and hedge up the way of the pure Gospel?

“Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; speaking lies in hypocrisy: having their conscience seared with a hot iron.” — 1 Tim. 4:1, 2.

Read also 2 Tim. 3. 2 Peter; chapters 2, and 3. and Jude. It is now a rare case that men cease to profess religon when they lose all the salvation they ever had, and even become deluded or even possessed with devils. Such profess greater light and wisdom than ever, and insist on the privilege of living off the public, presuming to be teachers, and are filled with pernicious anti-christ spirits.

There is one C. G. Pierce, who is the victim of a deluded picking devil for some years, He is now using his mouth for satan in Denver, Col. He told the base and positive falsehood there that the cause of Christ is running down here in Mich, and has not prospered ever since the saints resorted to the law to protect meetings from interruptions. This we say is a base falsehood. The work is speading rapidly in every direction, and is deep and pure. It is a croaking spirit of the devil every time that picks and whines about the use of the law when it is used lawfully. About four years ago, the meetings in Willamston, Mich. were being rendered largely useless by the bad conduct of the wicked who were influenced by sectarians. The question came up, what shall we do? Shall we discontinue meetings, or shall we use the law. I took it to God. The first answer was, “the law is good if used lawfully.” Then we asked the Lord, “what is the lawful use of the law?” The answer came, “We are now under the law of love ourselves, and therefore whenever the civil law can be used in harmony with the spirit and principles of love, it is right to use it. Then came the clear conclusion, that the civilizations, and moralizations of such inconsiderate young men, who would not regard kind entreaties and admonitions, were in harmony with the motives of pure love. Also that it was according to the very spirit of love, to have meetings of public worship under the range of decency and order, that, the Spirit could work and souls be saved. We then proceeded in the name of Jesus and arrested two young men. A sabbath passed before the trial, in which there was good order, and that night two souls at the altar. Good order continued, and fruitful meetings. We gave this decision to the Churches elsewhere, where meetings had been disturbed, and it resulted in order, and salvation work in other places. In every place where the saints have prosecuted disturbers of meetings, after exhausting all kind means, God has blessed them in it, and made His cause to prosper. Of course God would not bless them if they were to prosecute men on the principles of retaliation, or in case of slander and personal persecution, even suffering violence for the sake of Christ. We ourself have been kicked, beaten with a chair, and twice mobbed, and slandered to the utmost of satan’s spleen, and it only moves us to praise the Lord; nor have we ever thought of the law. And we can take persecutions when it comes in the form of disturbing a meeting just as joyfully so far as ourself is concerned, but then, if nothing else will do, the law becomes a duty for the civilization of “brutish” men, and the maintenance of public worship as a means of saving souls.

When a man threatens to prosecute for his character and reputation, you may know he is of the devil: and when a man growls at good people for using the law in love to maintain order and decency, you may set him down as deluded.

Evil workers are plenty in the land, and, when a call has been made for some one to come and preach, very often the devils instruments are the first to run. Therefore when any one responds to your call do not bid them Godspeed, nor send for them, unless you know something about who you are sending for, Recently a brother in the West was hasty enough to send about $40. of the Lord’s money to one J. W. Wyrick of Kansas, to bring him there. The same man was exposed by Bro’s. Speck and Kilpatrick. The brother in the far West got word in the TRUMPET that the party, to whom he had sent the money was not of God; and he sent a dispatch re-

Page 3

manding the draft, and telling the man not to come. But he was too late. The ungodly man had got the money, and now coolly writes ‘‘Cannot return money.”

Let all God’s saints profit by this lesson. Never send for a man you know nothing of. God has a “flying roll” that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth; for every one that stealeth shall be; cut off as on this side according to it, and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it.” — Zech. 5:3. If a professed preacher is a stranger, you had better write to some one in whom you have confidence, who may know the party, and find out. We are sorry to mention and give place to the above name once more, but since rebuked by the brethren, satan has more fully entered him, and he is foaming out his own shame, and giving tongue to lies to the fullest extent. This information we have direct from holy men of God.

In this black list we give a few extracts from a letter, the writer of which we are thankful our readers will know, without the use of the name.

“My dear brother Michels and family, may God bless you all with the fulness of His love. Amen! I am thankful for the peace and salvation of God in my soul. All glory to His name!

Now I feel that I ought to write you as you are one of the publishers of the TRUMPET, and are responsible with the rest for what it publishes. Now I have been slandered, and my name published in connection with charges of practicing and preaching freeloveism, which is nothing short of criminal libel, and is calculated to prejudice the minds of the people, destroy my influence, and rob me of my living.” “I feel that I am justified now in taking some action in law to recover damages. Now I say positively and warn you that hereafter my name must not be printed or mentioned or I shall take action.”

This to enlightened minds needs no comment. Nothing can be more absurd and self contradictory than a testimony that a man has the salvation and peace of God, coupled with threats to sue for damage of reputation. Any person that needs to resort to the law to maintain sufficient influence to get his living, does not deserve a living in that way. A man that is backed up by a holy life does not need a court backing. The apostles cried aloud and warned the people of the “concision,” of evil workers, of false teachers, and said of certain false prophets, that their “mouths ought to be stepped.” It is a holy duty every man of God owes to his fellow men to warn them from every coil that would destroy their souls. And when God’s ministers can no more do this, we should cease to talk of a free country. The worth of immortal souls is too serious a matter for any true child of God, to keep silent and let them be blasted and destroyed, because some one wants to get his living in that line of work. We shall ever fear the Lord and do our duty toward God, and all men in the love of Jesus, and in the love of all souls.

WANDERING STARS.

—:o:—

Dear Saints of the Most High God Greeting: — I praise God for all things; and especially for salvation just now from all sin. Oh the wonders of His grace, that He has saved a poor sinner like me, who has merited nothing but divine wrath. The Lord is merciful and gracious; slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. He will not always chide, neither will He keep His anger forever. He hath not dealt with us according to our sins nor rewarded us according to our iniquites. For us the heaven is high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward them that fear His name. “But the mercy of God is from everlasting to everlasting, upon them that tear Him and His righteousness unto childrens children. To such as keep His covenant, and to those that remember His commandments to do them,” and not do as some do: teach that they are non- essential, that they are not for us to obey, but meant only for the Jews, but the Gentiles need not keep them, or only keep them spiritually. It may do for such as are unregenerated, or sinners to disobey, but they are in danger of hell fire. But those who are saved, who are made free, who are the seed of promise, who are made nigh by the blood of Jesus, and now are no more strangers, (Gentiles, sinners,) but are children of the living God, and we love to obey Him in all His commandments.

We met with one of those who teach the ordinances of Jesus are nonessential, that they only teach ns humility, or were given to teach the twelve apostles humility. If the poor soul would only practice what the Bible teaches he would have shown some good manners, in prefering his brother before himself, according to the Word; but he had not the grace to keep his tongue long enough to hear any thing, but let it run.

We are truly, in perilous times, in the times when men are lovers of their own selves, heady, high minded, puffed up in their own ignorance. While they imagine themselves wise, such knowledge exhibited is not of God, but is sensual, devilish. The same spirit hindered us in a meeting North of Bowling Green, when quite a number were under conviction he came in to oppose, but would do nothing to lead poor sinners to the Lamb of God. But said he was called to follow after and stir up. We believe he was sent of his father the devil, that deluded soul said he had sinned the sinagains tthe Holy Ghost, but was reprieved. Yet he and his followers claim more light then others. Truly “satan has transformed himself into an angel of light.”

BRETHREN CONSIDER THIS.

—:o:—

THE liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself. — Prov. 11:25;

Our spiritual condition depends on our obedience to the voice of the Holy Spirit. It is not enough to be obedient to the stated duties, that would only be legal bondage. We are not to see how little we can do for God and get to heaven; but be always seeking opportunity to glorify God. Souls that have not yet received the clear light of their privileges, and blessedness in giving, will only become barren in their souls; while those who have had the light, will back-slide if they do not walk therein. Our Heavenly Father enjoys the blessedness of giving us all things freely, because He says: “it is more blessed to give than to receive.” Any one that does not enjoy giving, cannot do it fully unto the Lord; for God loves the cheerful giver. How many opportunities pass unimproved, all because the Scriptural rule is not observed.

Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come. — 1 Cor. 16:2;

Dear saints, can you testify that you live by every Word of God, and still pay no heed to this, and many similar Scriptures? Some may say: my income is so small. It is less than the widows 2 mites, which is less than one cent; yet it was sufficient to obtain the approval, and bring a blessing to her soul. Doubtless many who are in limited circumstances have all that the Lord can trust them with. For if we “with-hold more than is meet, it tendeth to poverty.” This can be applied both temporally and spiritually. We might just as well expect a harvest without ever sowing the seed, as to expect our souls to prosper when we devote our time and means to our selves, and our families.

“And He said unto them, take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. — Luke 12:15. Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affections, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry. — Col. 3:5. We do not wish to keep back any thing that is profitable, though some might judge that we had some selfish motives; nevertheless we will speak the truth, “that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.” There are glorious opportunities now for sending forth the glorious truth in books, tracts etc., which are now ready, and much more would be prepared if means were at hand. Many homes can be entered by a tract or TRUMPET, and afterwards the way is opened for God’s children, and for Jesus to enter their hearts. Many think if they pay their subscription for the TRUMPET, they are free. And praise God for the great blessing the paper has been to them not thinking it could be as great a blessing to others, if it could be sent to them. I know the Lord is hastening the day when the TRUMPET OFFICE will be more freely furnished with means to carry on the great work.

Brethren we believe this is the Lord’s last call to the gentile, and that this is the evening light and the Lord’s coming is very near. Let us show our faith by our works. One mistake the children of Israel made when they came back from babylon, and were building the wall of Jerusalem, was: they exacted of their brethren, loaning them and taking a mortgage on their lands, their homes and vineyards, until their brethren were embaressed and the great work was hindered and the reproach of their enemies were increased, until rebuked by Nehemiah. Then they released their brethren and refused their wages, or to buy land; then the work went on. Let each one be careful to take time to read Nell. 5th Chap. for it is a type of the REBUILDING of the spiritual Jerusalem. And as the time is short, and much rubbish in the way, and the laborers are few. Let each one build his part of the wall for the safety of his own family, and the glory of God. I praise the Lord that He has laid the great importance of the work on so many hearts, and I believe many that have not seen their duty, will become faithful stewards, and put their talents to work where they will gain others, and use their money where nearly every dollar will be blessed in the salvation of a soul.

Yours in the work of salvation.

G. T. Clayton.

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

—:o:—

The dear brethren having written for us to come to Tekonsha, Branch Co. Mich. we did so on Satuarday June 1st. Though the weather was cold and rainy, quite a good congregation were assembled at the school house, that night. The next morning it was still rainy, nevertheless many of the dear saints cams several miles, and the Lord was with us in glorious melting power. One soul was joyfully converted, and four wholly sanctified. The house was well filled at night, and the Word of God was listened to with much interest.

Monday P. M. about 30 dear saints met at the house of dear Bro. and sister Cook, and the Lord being also in the midst, we had a glorious meeting. Several more consecrations to God. Some were wholly sanctified, and others refreshed in the Spirit, and others who needed much of the Lord, we fear went away without getting to the point where God could bless their souls.

With few exceptions the Church is in sweet union, they have for some time felt themselves cut off. O may they sink into God and find the end of ail their troubles.

We greatly enjoyed this short visit with those saints. Found very precious brethren and sisters, most of whom we had never before met. God bless them all for Christ’s sake, and especially give grace to those whom He has called to His Gospel work.

Amen!

Melrose Ohio, May 27, ’89.

Dear Brethren: — God bless you one and all. May you be kept by the power of God. May your faith grow exceedingly; love and peace be multiplied unto you.

We praise the God of all grace for the wonderful victory God has given us at this place. Glory to our God! Our last report was from Portland, Jay Co. Ind. from there we came to Sweetser Grant , Co. The saints procured a babylon meeting house for us to preach in but one sermon was too much for them, and the second night they closed the house. There was great interest in those two meetings, and surely if we had had a house much good would have been done. We had an ordinance meeting there. God was with us in power. One soul who was deceived, was awakened, made confession and we trust was saved. The dear saints had compromised and toned down to some extent, and had lost power. They were wonderfully delivered and made radical against the worlds of the devil.

We came on from there to Roanoke, Huntington, Co. where we stopped two nights, and held meeting.

We next came to Melrose, Ohio. Glory to God! Bro’s. I. Porter, Wm. Fowler, Sisters Burgess, Benn, my wife and myself, came here, began meeting the 21st. in the name of Jesus. God was with us in mighty convicting, and saving power. Souls were saved in every meeting. We closed yesterday evening the 26th. yesterday and last night there were 17 consecrations for pardon and purity. During the meeting there were about 40 consecrations, for pardon and entire sanctification. The meeting was one of wonderful profit. We were made wonderfully happy, by the coming of Bro. A. J. Kilpatrick, and J. N. Howard from Payne. They did splendid work in preaching the Word. God bless those two brethren. O what sweet fellowship we have with the true saints. Glory to God! The saints here are established on the Word of God. May God bless and keep them from the power of satan.

J. P. Haner.

LATER.

AUBURN IND., June the 4, ’89, we closed meeting last night at Payne Ohio, which continued 8 days. We left Melrose, for Noble, Branch Co Mich. We cam to Payne, and it pleased the Father to prevent us from going any farther by sending much rain, for which we praise Him.

We were not permitted to go to the Grovemeeting at Noble Mich. We had meeting in a private house which room was small, but the Lord was present in every meeting; much good was done in name of Jesus. Souls were saved at every altar service. During the meeting there were about 40, came to the altar, some for pardon and some for purity. Nearly all of them made the consecration, claimed what they came for. Glory to Jesus, many more souls might have been saved, had we a house to accommodate the people who came. The saints are going to build a house there soon.

God bless the dear saints at that place. May they be kept in perfect harmony and fully saved in Christ; may nothing be able to bring division among them. We remember them in our prayers. God bless you all, your Bro. saved in Jesus,

J. P. Haner.

Croton Mich., Apr. 14, ’89.

Dear Saints: — May God keep you all walking in the light as He is in the light. We are all praising God this morning for this wonderful salvation that keeps us free from sin, praise God! We live in the Spirit, we are kept by the power, walking with Jesus each moment. O it is so glorious to follow Jesus everywhere He leads. I have stepped out on God’s platform to declare His precious truths as they are in Christ Jesus, and praise God! I will not compromise to please men or devils, nor draw back the sword from shedding blood. There is a balm in Gilead that will heal every wound if they will let the Great Physician apply it to the wound but if not it will prove death unto their souls here, and damnation through all eternity. Many are crying out to me, “You would be a great deal more successful in winning souls to God if you would let the sects alone. Praise God! those who preach the straight Word of God, cannot let the sects alone any more than they can let the Word of God alone; because it is the Word that cuts them off.

After the baptizing of the little Church at Hesperia, and also at the Lattin neighbor-hood, I returned home and will commence meetings in our school-house soon. They are having sect meetings all around us; the people tell me that there is so much wickedness carried on in the sects, that they are disgusted with everything in the form of religon.

Oh! may God move in mighty power, as to overthrow all the works of the devil, and setup His own pure Kingdom in this place, which will shine brighter than the sun at noon-day. Oh, dear brethren, pray for us, I expect to be alone in the work of God here, as my husband is not expected to be home; but I have the mighty God of Israel on my side, and if God be for me, who can be against me. Though a host should encamp against my soul, I will not fear; hallelujah to God, and the Lamb forever! Your sister, saved and sanctified, to do the whole will of God.

M. A. Stowell.

Walkerton, Ind.

Dear Saints: — I feel led to write what the God of our salvation is doing for us in this place. We are having glorious meetings and God is keeping the little ones filled with the Spirit, and knit together in love. Last Sunday we had baptismal service which the Lord witnessed by His Spirit that He was well pleased. Six souls were buried with Christ in baptism. Some of the young folks around here, believe this is the right way, and earnestly contend for it, yet they are unsaved. Truly we are in perilous times. Men are deceived and being deceived, and are waxing worse and worse, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.

Bro. Leininger and Bro. & sister Gast, were with us. In the evening our hearts were melted together in love as we observed the ordinance of washing the saints feet, I do praise God that He has enabled me to walk in the light as He is in the

I light. Though I am poor in this worlds goods, I am rich in faith. Your Bro. saved and sanctified to do His will in all things.

S. P. Strang.

We left Grand Junction, for Kendall Mich., May the 18, commenced meeting that evening in a hall; had good order, and attentive listeners to the Word of God which came by the Holy Spirit.

We were thankful indeed for the privilege of meeting the dear brethren and sisters in Christ, at Kendall, Mich., for the first time. Surely we had a happy time in the Lord; a number of souls consecrated their all to God, during the progress of the meeting; among whom was Bro. Frank Schoolcraft’s sister, Nellie, and others. We pray God to keep her from this vain, and proud world. One sister’s husband came to the Lord, determined to serve Him with her, the remainder of his days. May the God of all grace, preserve him from sin, is our prayers. Some three or four sinners were saved, and a number of consecrations for entire sanctification.

Some devil-sent preacher had formerly been among the flock, trying to divide them, but to no avail; he, however, succeded in drawing certain ones after him, winch came out of the erronious doctrine, to the Lord; and confessing their mistake, were made free, hallelujah amen! We closed the meeting on May the 24. Bro. Frank, took us to Cheshire Mich., where we met with the saints; preached three times and returned to the TRUMPET OFFICE.

We also met with our Father, Mother, Bro’s and sisters at home, from whom we had been absent for about a year. God bless and save all who are unsaved is our prayer, amen!

OBITUARIES.

>:o:<

IN EVELINE, Charlevoix Co., Mich., on the 5th of May, 1889, Mr. Alanson Campbell, son of our aged sister Campbell, was suddenly called from earth to eternity. Mr. Campbell had been troubled with heart disease for some years, but not to any alarming extent, and his sudden death was wholly unexpected by friends and neighbors, and was a terrible shock to all. He had been to East Jordan on Saturday evening, and returned home feeling as well as ever. On the following morning about ten o’clock, he and his wife got into the buggy with the intention of going to the villiage of Charlevoix, and after they had driven out into the highway and stopped for a hired hand to close the gate, he spoke to his wife and said, “O I am so faint,” when his head fell backward and he instantly passed away. Had he lived until the 16th inst-., he would have been 35 years of age. He leaves a wife, one child, a lather and mother, two brothers, and one sister who mourn his loss. Funeral services were held at the house, after which the remains were taken to the Charlevoix Cemetery, and placed to rest in the city of the dead. We pray our Father to let His blessings rest upon those sad hearts, and may they all be prepared; “for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.”

AT Jerry City, Ohio, April 28, ’89, Ethel Cupp, daughter, of Bro Ulyssus, and sister Cora Cupp, was taken home to be with the Lord; aged 3 years, 9 months and 14 days. “The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh a way, blessed be the Dame of the Lord.”

’Tis oft that we stand at the couch,
Where our dear ones are passing away;
We see them enter the vale,
Forever at home to stay.

We lay them away in the grave,
With our tears and our tokens of love;
We think of them often, but know
They’re gone to realms above.

The ways of our Father are right,
Tho’ He sends us oft sorrow and pain;
He giveth, He taketh the dear ones back,
Oh, blessed be His name!

DIED in Wilson, Charlevoix Co., Mich., at the home of Jasper Warden, on May 3, ’89, Mrs. Anna a Deets, wife of Cornelius Deets, aged 62 years, 11 months, and 19 days. The funeral services were, held at the Wilson school-house where a large company of friends and acquaintances had assembled for the service; after which the remains was taken to the Wilson Cemetery and placed with the dead. A husband and nine children remain, to mourn the loss of wife and mother; God bless and save them all.

(Contiued from 1st page.)

— Eph. 2:19-22.

Ye also as lively stones; are built up a spiritual house, a holy preisthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable unto God by Jesus Christ. — 1 Peter, 2:5.

“And I, John, saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven, saying; Behold the tabernacle of God is with men. And He will dwell with them and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God.” — Rev 21:2-3.

Thus we see the Church of the living God, the body of Christ, is filled with God Himself. For we have the mind of Christ: saith the Apostle.

Hereby know we the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesseth Jesus Christ come in the flesh is of God. And every spirit that confesseth not Jesus Christ come in the flesh, is not of God. (Dean Alfords version). And this is that spirit of antichrist, whereby ye have heard that it should come, and even now already is in the world, God, the Father, and Jesus Christ the son: dwells in our flesh to-day, through the Holy Spirit.

Therefore in the name of Christ that dwelleth in us; we council all sectarains to put away their carnal strife, and sect idols, and perfect holiness in the fear of God, or they will be found anti-christ against God and His truth.

The Church of God agrees to disagree no longer, but takes to herself her God-given gift of truth unmixed, and demands of our rebelious world, unconditional surrender, and of all temporizing religionists complete conformity to the whole realm of truth.

Truly the Lion and the lamb shall lie down together in the same breast. Christ is the Lion of the tribe of Juda when contending for truth, and the Lamb of God, when reviled and persecuted. Now behold the Bride of Christ; how beautiful she appears as she sits at the feet of her Lord; sitting at the feet of Jesus. Oh who can turn away the loved one, whose every smile is full of love; there she loves to weep and pray; there she loves to do his commandments as she follows the example of her Lord in washing the feet of Christ’s spiritual body. “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren ye have done it unto me.” We see in her no longer any contentious wrangling about the duty of following the Lamb in the ordinance of baptism. Being buried with Him by baptism into death, and risen with Him to walk in newness of life. In all the gifts of healing, discernment or prophecy she partakes of His fullness, and stands completely filled in all the will of God.

If you ask where this fairest among woman is to be found, I would refer you to Jesus who is able to give you an inheritance among them that are sanctified, and there you see her. If you are joined to the Lord you are already in the Church, and man cannot turn you out, neither can you turn yourself out, except by sin. If your name is in the book of life, that is all that is nescessary. The two and three or many who meet in the name of Jesus only, comprise the Church in every place Who recognize Jesus Christ as the only head of the Church. And although every one is clothed with humility and subject one to another, the younger to the elder, and they recognize divinely ordained ministers, yet they fellowship no sect and are subject to no beast given authority.

But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountains of the house of the Lord shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills, and all people shall flow into it. And many nations shall come, and say: come and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the God of Jacob: and He will teach us of His ways, and we will walk in His paths: for the law s all go forth out of zion, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. — Micah 4:1, 2. Amen!

W. J. Evans.

New Hope, Pa.

Dear Brethren: — I praise God for a true Bible salvation; although we do not hear much true Bible doctrine preached. My prayer to God is that He will send some of the saints to our vicinity to preach the evening light. I love to read the Trumpet, for it is nourishment to my soul.

MODERN HEATHENISM.

_____

Dear Brethren: — We respectfully call your attention to the following FACTS in respect to Freemasonry, an institution which has obtained and is now exerting a wide and powerful influence in all our churches, in all our civil institutions, and on all social relations.

First. FREEMASONRY IS A DISTINCT AND POSITIVE RELIGION. This appears (1) from the fact that it has temples, priests and altars, not those of some other religion, as Judaism or Mohammedanism, but peculiarly its own. “The Master of the lodge is its priest.” — Web’s Monitor, by Rob. Morris, page 231. (2). Its rites, as discalceation, darkness, shock of entrance, perambulation, entrusting, investiture and aphanism, are all religious rites, each having a deep religions meaning. For this, see under these several heads in the Lexicon of Freemasonry by A. G. Mackey, who bears the title “Past General Grand High Priest,” etc., a standard Masonic author. (3). It promises salvation by Masonry alone; e. g. in the first degree the candidate is told that the “Gavel is made use of by operative Masons for the purpose of breaking off superfluous corners of stones, the better to fit them for the builders’ use. But we as free and accepted Masons, are taught to make use of it for the more noble and glorious purpose of divesting our hearts and consciences of all the vices and superfluities of life, thereby fitting us as living stones for that spiritual building, the house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” Again in Mackeys Lexicon, page 16, we read: Acacian. A term . . . . . . signifying a Mason, who by living in strict obedience to the obligations and precepts of the fraternity is free from sin.” Again, same work, page 298: “It (the Master Masons degree) inspires the most cheering hope of the final reward which belongs only to the just made perfect.”

If other authority is needed. General B. F. Butler, a Mason of thirty-three degrees, said in a speech at a Masonic fair at Lynn, Mass., Nov., 3, 1878: “Masonry is a RELIGION OF THE HIGHEST AND NOBLEST TYPE.” The noted Albert Pike, also of the 33d degree, “Past Sovereign Grand Commander,” etc., in an address, Sept 11, 1879, near Harpers Perry, Virginia, is thus reported by a correspondent of the Baltimore Sun: “Masonry, said he, is a religion, for every man before becoming a Mason, must express his belief in a deity, and in the continued existence of the intellectual portion after death. The trouble with the ministers of religion now is that they want us to believe TOO MUCH, while the Ingersolls and others want us to believe nothing at all.” That is, Freemasonry as a religious system is distinct from either Christianity or atheism.

Second. FREEMASONRY UTTERLY REJECTS THE LORD JESUS CHRIST AND HIS NAME. The rejection of Christ and his name from its rites is almost universally admitted, and is quite apparent from the following extracts from Web’s Monitor above cited, page 305: “In ancient times Masons were charged in every country to be of the religion of that country or nation, wherever it was’ yet it is now thought more expedient only to oblige them to that, religion in which all men agree.” And again, page 285, “So broad is the religion of Masonry, and so carefully are all sectarian tenets excluded from the system, that the Christian, the Jew, the Mohammedan, in all their numberless sects and divisions may and do harmoniously combine in its moral and intellectual work, with the Buddhist, the Parsee, the Confucian and the worshiper of Deity under every form.” Prayer, in Masonic lodges should be of a general character, containing nothing offensive to any class of consciencious brethren.” And still again, Mackey’s Lexicon, page 404: “The religion of Masonry is pure theism, on which its different members engraft their own peculiar opinions; but they are not permited to introduce them into the lodge, or to connect their truth or falsehood with the truth of Masonry.”

Third. The rites practiced and principles taught in Masonic lodges, according to standard Masonic authors, ARE ALL TAKEN FROM THE ANCIENT HEATHEN MYSTERIES, in which the sun, or the vis genetrix in nature was worshiped through the intervention of the sun-god, Osiaris, Bacchus, Baal, Adonis or Tammuz. For this see Mackey’s Lexicon, page 35: “The philosophers and sages . . . . . . taught in secret what they are afraid to inculcate in public, and established for this purpose the ancient mysterys, those truly Masonic institutions.” Again on page 320, after a detailed account of the mysteries, he says, “These ceremonies were afterward adopted by the Freemasons.” Again in his Ritualist the same author after an account of the rite of perambulation as used by the Hindoos, Greeks, Romans, and Druids, says, page 27: “Hence we find in the universal prevalence of this ceremony and the invariable mode of passing from the east to the west by way of the south, a pregnant evidence of the common source of all these rites, to which Freemasonry is also indebted for its existence.

We could fill a volume with extracts of the same tenor, showing as these have shown, that Freemasonry is a distinct and positive religion with the promise of salvation; yet rejecting and denying the Lord Jesus; a religion which claims to have borrowed its principles and rites from those heathen institutions so abhorrent to God and corrupting to the soul of men. And observe also that from its boasted benefits for this life and that which is to come, it excludes by law the great mass of mankind.

As another example of the denial and rejeection of the Lord Jesus by Masonry, we notice the rejection of his name from passages of the New Testament actually employed in Masonic ceremonies. Thus in 2 Thess. 3:6 we read, “Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly,” etc. But in the formula for opening the Royal Arch chapter in Webb’s Monitor by Rob. Morris, page 120, we find: “Now we command you, brethren, that you withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly,” etc. Many similar passages might be cited.

May, we ask you, dear brethren, to examine and weigh these facts? “Prove all things, hold fast that which is good.” (1 Thess. 5:21). Nay, aside from the corrupting influence and practical workings of the order, and viewed only with regard to the dishonor which it offers to the Lord Jesus Christ, when we see “what they do in the dark, every man in the chambers of his imagery, may we ask again, “Is it a light thing to the house of Judah that they commit the abominations which they commit here?” (Ez. 8), We hardly need to inform you that Freemasonry is entirely revealed and accessible to you all. But the above extracts are all from Masonic authorities,

TRUTH IS WHAT WE WANT.

—:o:—

Thou art my battle-axe and weapons of war: for with thee will I break in pieces the nations, and with thee will I destroy kingdoms. — Jer. 51:20.

Dear brethren, by reading the Word of God we understand that God’s sanctified ones are the weapons of His indignation. Let us not shun what God wants us to be. Some men claim to be called of God to preach, but they fear to preach the whole truth, and think we should not speak so plain against sectism and tobacco, for they say it hurts peoples feelings. Dear brethren if there is anything in the world that will open the eyes of the people it is straight preaching. Oh for a Holy Ghost baptized man of God, who is not ashamed of the Bible. We are commanded to preach the Word. I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and dead at His appearing and His kingdom; preach the Word, be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. — 2 Tim. 4:1, 2. The reason why we should be plain in our preaching, is because “straight is the gate, and narrow is the way, and few there be that find it.” So we see very plain the people need the straight truth preached to them, so they can see the narrow way. Honest souls love to have the truth preached in its fullness while ungodly professors oppose it. Let us uncover the wickedness of this world and expose by the truth the evils of sectism, and hold up to the people the true Church, against which the gates of hell shall not prevail. We love the description of this Church in, Eph. 5:25-27. When men deny the body of Christ, they generally organize to themselves sects, and get up creeds, and teach for doctrines the commandments of men. They pray for unity, but want all to be united in their own little cage of deception. We know all such men are not of God. Let us all obey the command in Matt. 28:19, 20. We are not commanded to do a few things, but all things whatsoever He hath commanded. If we fall short, we are not included in the faithful promise, “lo I am with you always even unto the end of the world.”

Your Bro. in Christ, saved from all sin.

BE DILIGENT IN ALL THINGS.

—:o:—

In the name of the Lord we wish to speak a few words concerning the workers in the field of the master’s vineyard, especially for the sisters. We learn that a company traveling in the work, some time ago, made themselves burdensome to the families where they stayed, because they would not make their beds in which they slept, nor help wash dishes or do house work which is a perfect shame, and a reproach on the cause. Shame on all such persons! all such young and strong women claiming to be called of God to work in the field are mistaken in their in the calling, for God will not and can-not use a lazy person. Read 2 Thess. 3:10. Paul’s command is: if any will not work neither shall he eat.

Paul did not make Himself burdensome, but worked with his hands. A person that is too lazy to work is too lazy to keep saved, or do any good for themselves or any body else. They are stumbling blocks to the world, and sinners have no confidence in them.

We found much prejudice existing among the people in some places where such persons have been. God does not delight in a slothful person. We should make ourselves useful, and whatsoever our hands find to do, do it with our might; and a child of God will do it cheerfully.

Sarah Smith.

MODERN HIRELINGS, AND CHRIST’S APOSTLES.

I HAVE been impressed for some time to write to you through the TRUMPET, as it may be interesting to some of the brethren to know about the big salaries received by some of the hirelings in New York City; and other topics which I have not seen published through the TRUMPET. In the first place we will give the names and salaries of these hirelings. The best paid man in New York is (I write the same as is published) Dr. John Hall, a brainy man from the north of Ireland, who preaches to 2000 every Sunday. His is the smallest church in town. He owes his rise in life to Robert Bonner, of the Ledger, who found him preaching to a small congregation in Dublin, and induced him to come to America. He gets a salary of $20,000. a year, and makes $5000. by his newspaper and magazine articles. He is given a luxuriously furnished house as well. Dr. Morgan Dix, the chief pastor of Trinity church corporation — the wealthiest in America — receives $15,000 yearly. Dr. William L. Taylor, of the Broadway Tabernacle, gets the same amount. He does literary work and lecturing that brings his income up to $20,000. Dr. Charles Hall, of the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian church, is paid $15,000. He is very eloquent, and his church is crowded at all services. Dr. Parkhurd of M … … square church, gets $12000. He has a large and distinguished congregation. Dr. Paxton, who preaches to Jay Gould and others less wealthy, is paid $15,000. The Rev. Robert Collyer, the blacks with preacher, is paid $10,000.

Want will become of these hirelings at the day of judgment? If they were to get salvation they would do as the apostles did, and teach the same doctrine. But they choose earthly pomp and glory instead. “The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money; yet will they lean upon the Lord and say, is not the Lord among us? none evil can come upon us. — Micah 3:11.

How different the humble, self-sacrificing life of the apostles! Doubtless the whole twelve did not receive in their lives as much as one of these hirelings gets in one year. They lived, labored, and died for the good of others. St Matthew is supposed to have suffered martyrdom, or was slain with the sword at the city of Ethiopia. St. Mark was dragged through the streets of Alexandria in Egypt, till he expired. St. Luke was hanged upon an olive tree in Greece. St. John was put into a cal..ron of boiling oil and escaped death. He afterward died a natural death at Ephesus, in Asia. St. James the Less vas thrown from a pinnacle or wing of the temple and then beaten to death with a fullers’ club. St. James the Great was beheaded at Jerusalem. St Philip was hanged up against a pillar at Hicapolis, a city of Phrygia. St. Bartholomew was flayed alive by the command of a barbarous king. St. Andrew was bound to a cross, whence he preached to the people till he expired. St Thomas was run through the body with a lance at Coromandel, in the East Indies. St. Judo was shot to death with arrows. St Simon Realot was crucified in Persia. St. Matthias was first stoned and then beheaded. St Barnabas was stoned to death by Jews at Salania. St. Paul was beheaded at Rome by the tyrant Nero.

Blanco, Pa.

Dear Trumpet Readers: — May the rich blessings of God rest and abide with you. Amen! O dear saints, we only know how sweet it is to be the Lord’s. Just to know that we have a loving Father and a dear elder Brother.

The meeting held here and at Shelhammer’s, by dear Bro., Warner and Co. was a blessing to my soul.

O dear ones! we have such sweet communion with our blessed Saviour, and with each other. O dear saints! it is so blessed to live so low and humble at the feet of Jesus. The more we meditate on the sweet life of Christ, richer beauties unfold. All Glory, honor, and praise be given to the Lamb forever! O dear saints! let us be true to God. May we watch and pray and live beneath the blood. And dear unsaved ones, who read the GOSPEL TRUMPET, may God bless you with salvation. If you only knew of the unspeakable riches of Christ that wells up in the soul, as a well of water springing up unto everlasting life, you would not stay away from Christ. Dear ones take the Cross and bear it for Jesus sake, and you shall wear a crown.

Christ will take away your fears
And cleanse you from all sin,
He’ll plant His Kingdom in your heart
And reign supreme within.

O ’tis glorious to us
Who dwell in Christ below,
And for sinners who will seek,
Our Redeemer’s love to know.

The narrow and despised way
That our Redeemer trod,
Is the only shining way
That leads us up to God.

This, the way of holiness.
Of joy and perfect peace
And all who seek this way to know,
Our God will bless with grace.

Your sister hid away with Christ, in God.

Dear Brethren: — May God bless you all and keep you true to Him. I am praising my heavenly Father for full salvation that saves us from all sin and gives us standing grace.

I pray God to send some holy baptized minister here this summer to hold a meeting; they will find a welcome home at Wm. R. Rutherford’s, also ground on which to set the tabernacle. We want some one that will stand to the Word.

There was one dear sister sanctified, and another requested our prayers at our last meeting. Praise God! we had complete victory in our souls. Pray for us!

Your sister in the love of Jesus, sanctified wholly.

S. A. Rutherford.

Dear Saints: — I do praise God that He saves me from all sin. Glory to His name! praise God for the sanctifying power of Christ that I have in my soul just now. I do praise God that I am where the truth does not hurt me. Praise His holy name!

Your sister saved and sanctified by the mighty power of the Holy Ghost.

M. M. Shellhammer.

—:o:—

St. Louis, Mich.

Dear Saints: — Our testimony is that we are saved and sanctified. Praise the Lord for salvation full and free! Dear saints pray for us here that God’s work may go on, souls be saved, and His Church revived. We realize that these are perilous times, but praise God He is with us, and has promised not to leave nor forsake us. Praise His holy name!

From your Bro. and sister in Christ
