Truth and Freedom.

_____

On the page that is immortal,
We the brilliant promise see,
“Ye shall know the truth, my people,
And its might shall make you free!”

For the truth, then, let us battle.
Whatsoever fate betide;
Long the boast that we are freemen,
We have made and publish’d wide.

He who has the truth, and keeps it,
Keeps not what to him belongs —
But performs a selfish action,
That his fellow-mortal wrongs.

He who seeks the truth, and trembles
At the dangers he must brave,
Is not fit to be a freeman —
He at best is but a slave.

He who hears the truth, and places
Its high promptings under ban,
Loud may boast of all that’s manly,
But can never be a man!

Friend, this simple lay who readiest,
Be not thou like either them —
But to truth give utmost freedom,
And the tide it raises stem.

Bold in speech, and hold in action
Be forever! — Time will test,
Of the free-soul’d and the slavish,
Which fulfills life’s mission best.

Be thou like the noble ancient —
Scorn the threat that bids thee fear:
Speak! — no matter what betide thee;
Let them strike, but make them hear!

Be thou like the first apostles —
Be thou like heroic PAUL;
If a free thought seeks expression
Speak it boldly — speak it all!

Face thine enemies — accusers;
Scorn the prison, rack, or rod;
And, if thou hast truth to utter,
Speak, and leave the rest to God!

PARENTAL DUTY, AND HOUSEHOLD SALVATION.

_____

Dearly Beloved Fathers and Mothers in Israel: — Let this humble exhortation enter into your hearts, and quicken your conscience in the presence of God. The God of Heaven and earth commands you bring up your children in the nurture rand admonition of the Lord. That is, set God before them, and exhort, yea, command them to fear and reverence their Creator. When they do wrong, speak not so much of their disobedience to father and mother, but make them remember that God who gives them life and breath, and all things, is offended and grieved by their bad actions. As God is infinitely greater than men, so it is far more effectual to set God over against all their evil tendencies than to set up your authority without God. If they sin, command them in holy reverence to kneel down and ask God to forgive them. Thus will their conscience be quickened into action before God, and they will early be saved. O ye fathers and mothers, have all your little ones take part in family worship from the time they are old enough to lisp words. Impress the thought of awe and reverence before God upon their minds and little hearts from infancy, and it will be just as natural for them to serve the God that yon do, provided your whole life is holy and consistent before their eyes, as it is for them to eat the food they see you eat. And this strong impetus in the direction of virtue and piety, Heaven and eternal life, will early lead to their conversion to God. We must confess that it is hard for us to pray in the family altar where the children, big and little, are permitted to sit up during prayer. It looks so irreverent, and we must say, heathen like, that it grieves the Spirit of God in our heart. O parents, in the name of Jesus Christ, you must in love command your household to bow the knee before the God you serve, or, if you do not you permit the devil to fill their hearts with irreverence and contempt for their Creator. We have heard of men in whose hearts the devil has put the abominable idea that if a person is not a real Christian it is wrong to kneel when others offer prayer. This we do not hesitate to affirm is a satanic notion. If a person is not in a saved state that is no reason he should act like a heathen, void of all good manners and courteous respect towards Christians, and reverence toward God. If a person has no respect for the Bible or its divine Author, and utterly no regard for those that worship Him; in other words, if a person is wholly oblivious to the Christian religion, and is an ignorant worshipper of some other God, some idol of the heathen world, we might expect such a person to sit up in the presence of others who kneel in adoration to the God of all creation. But it is different with persons who believe the Bible is true, and have respect for those who worship the Almighty. In Canada, and in many places of the South, about the whole congregation kneel down while public prayer is being offered. This looks becoming. Even in the public sanctuary all should kneel, or, at least, bow their heads in reverence while the God that gives them their breath is being addressed in solemn prayer. Much more should every soul kneel down in the sacred family altar. Especially the children of the household. To do otherwise is to show contempt for your parents, and shameful disrespect for their devotion, as well as for the Divine object of their worship. Therefore we charge you, O parents, in the name of Jesus, see that God is not insulted by such dreadful irreverence in your house. To kneel while others pray is not hypocrisy on the part of an unsaved person, as some would foolishly argue, but it simply shows that you have good manners and decent respect for the God that others worship. Even sinners should fear and reverence God, and “Be courteous to all men,” and every principle of refinement and politeness requires you to bow down while the family sacrifice is being offered; Much more should children do so, who are commanded of God to honor their father and mother.

Some parents go to the house of God on the Lord’s day, and let their little boys and girls stroll about wherever the devil and his allurements may incline their feet. Be assured that God will hold you accountable in the day of judgment for their life of sin, should He not in mercy use other means to pull them out of the fire of perdition, into which you, through your base neglect of parental duty, were leaving them run.

Others take them along to meeting and let them sit back wherever they please in the company of the wicked and learn to serve the devil, while they pretend to serve God. Shame on such stupid indifference to the well-being of your children, and to the awful responsibility you have brought upon your own souls in assuming the parental relation. Now we say in the presence and in the love of God, that it is the duty of all Christian parents to order your household in the fear of God to bow with you in family worship, to sit with you, or under holy influences in the place of worship. And if you are saved before your children have grown up to young men and women, we are constrained to say in the light of the Bible that it is your solemn duty to have those children saved in early youth, and grow up in piety before God. This is true, as a rule, though there may be some excusable exceptions. But when the Savior said, “I come to send division, for from henceforth there shall he five in one family, two against three, and three against two,” He had more especial reference to the effect of introducing His “New and living way” into families that were grown up and married off. Some of whom receive Christ, while others cling to their former religion. “The son against the father, and the son-in-law against the father-in-law,” etc. But when families have not been grounded in a previous religion, or are all yet young and under the control of the parents, it is in accordance with the very genius of the true Christian faith, that, when embraced by the parents, it should sooner or later leaven the whole family. Accordingly, Peter said on the day of Pentecost, “The promise is unto you, and to your children.” — Acts 2:39. Paul said to the trembling jailer at Phillippi, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. And they spake unto him the words of the Lord, and to ail that were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes: and was baptized, he, and all his, straightway,” and it is farther said that he “rejoiced, believing in God- with all his house.” — Acts 16:30—34. Doubtless, he had his family under good subjection, therefore they respected and honored their father and mother, and immediately followed their steps. How many parents on embracing Christ, let their children go right on in sin. If parents, on being converted, or on being convicted of duty neglected in the past, would call their children together, and say unto them, “My dear children, your Father and Mother have now given our hearts to God, of whom we have been ignorant in the past And this merciful God has given us all things we enjoy, even the breath we draw; and He now requires us to “command our children” to fear and love and obey Him. So you must all repent of your wicked doings of the past, and serve Him all the days of your life. Where we have not done our duty in the past we ask you, our children, to forgive us. But now the God of heaven is the God of this our family. So every knee must how to Him, and every heart must be given to Him.” Then let them kneelin prayer, call on God to save their children. Command those having come to the years of discretion to repent of all their sins, and God will work with you, giving them repentance, and they shall be saved. Teach the smaller ones to offer little prayer, and thus bring all under “the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” If my child who is approaching ten years of age were to lose the grace of God out of his heart, I should, in the light of the Bible, regard myself responsible for his life of sin, if I did not command, and positively require him to repent, and be restored to the favor of God. And this responsibility I regard as resting upon my soul while the child is under age, and subjected by the laws of God and man to our control.

“And the Lord said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do; Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment: that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.” — Gen. 18:17—19.

God chose Abraham to be the father of a great nation, and all the nations of the earth were to be blessed in him, because He knew that faithful patriarch would “COMMAND HIS CHILDREN and his household after him,” and as a result “they shall keep the way of the Lord.” Abraham did not believe in serving the Lord, and then let his children do as they pleased, hut he commanded them to “keep the way of the Lord.” This was so pleasing to God that He highly honored him, made him even the “father of all the faithful.” Therefore let no person think youself one of the “faithful” unless you follow the good example of Abraham. Do you think that God has changed His mind respecting the duty of parents? Does the law say, “Children, obey your parents,” and the Gospel, “Parents, obey your children?” If we were to judge by the way some families are managed we would think that such a change has been made in passing from the old to the new covenant. Some are ready to say, “I believe in admonishing our children and giving them good advice, and if they will not heed we are clear.” Ah, beware how you lightly treat the responsibilities that rest upon you! lest in the day of judgment God will hold you to account for the damnation of your children. Eli was just of your opinion. “Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the Lord. Wherefore the sin of the young men was very great before the Lord.” — 1 Sam. 2:12, 17. Did not their father admonish them? Yes: “And he said unto them, why do ye such things? for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people. Nay, my sons; for it is no good report that I hear: ye make the Lord’s people to transgress” — “or to cry out.” — verses 23, 24. In verses 27-35 we read: “There came a man of God unto Eli, and said unto him, thus saith the Lord.” Then follows the Lord’s rebuke, and declaration that his sons Hophni and Phinehas should both die in one day, which came to pass. What did the Lord have against Eli? Thus saith the Lord:

“For I have told him that I will judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not. And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering forever.” — 1 Sam. 3:13, 14.

O may God help all yon parents who are slack in governing your household to hear this. Eli admonished his sons, but did not restrain them. He did not like Abraham, command his household. O the sad, sad picture so often witnessed in these last days, when children are disobedient to parents. O dear parents, turn over a new leaf. Call your children together, confess your faults to them, tell them that God holds you under a solemn command to control your family in righteousness. From this on put them under righteous discipline, be very firm, but deal in great love and tenderness. Take your children to the children’s meetings, Sabbath school and divine worship; command them in the name of Jesus to repent and seek after God, and He will bless your command with glorious results if you are fully saved and perfected in the love of God yourself. Have them present and kneel with you in family worship, teach the smaller ones a little prayer. Restrain the older ones from all vices, such as tobacco, swearing, etc. Be a good father as well as a faithful father; talk to your children much about God, and how He demands of you to rule them, and trust God with all your heart to save your children and He will bring it to pass. Fast and pray to God until you obtain a promise.

CHILDREN’S MEETING.

_____

Dear Bro. Warner: — I like the Gospel Trumpet very well, excepting it being in favor of Sunday schools. Can you give me some New Testament authority for them.

Respectfully, Your brother.

Newton Ayers.

Answer. We do not believe in Sunday schools as usually carried on in the world and formal babylon. A mere routine of formality, and official machinery, and a dress- parade of pomp and vanity. Yet children and older people can doubtless assemble on the Lord’s day, and read, teach, and study the Word of God with profit, if the superintendent and teachers are all saved in God, and teach in the spirit of Christ. The only authority we know in the New Testament to sustain Sunday schools, are the commission, and other Scriptures, which requires us to teach the Gospel of Christ to every creature. That children need the Word of God taught to them by other means than the ordinary preaching is very evident. They need the truth presented to them in such simple words, and by such illustrations as come within their immature comprehension. Hence to preach the Gospel to every creature,” these little creatures must have it adapted to their young minds. Hence we would not call in question the wisdom of Sabbath schools, if they are so conducted as to come under the head of spiritual devotion to God, and real salvation services. In formal sects, where salvation is scarcely known, and religion is a mere matter of of culture, the Sunday school is largely depended upon as a “nursery for the Church.” They only hope to so incline the character, that the persons will join the sect, and by a life of good morals, and some good works, ultimately obtain salvation. But God’s way is that we bring His Word to bear upon the heart of old and young, with a faith that looks for immediate fruits of salvation. Hence all Sabbath schools, and Gospel meetings for children, should with the proper teaching, couple altar services and testimony. Salvation should be the first object aimed at. Instead of inducing a mechanical recitation of Scriptures by the incitation of rivalry and prizes, get children saved, and the love of God will implant a relish for the study of the precious Word of the Lord.

In many localities, where a sufficient number interested and gifted in this work for the little folks seem to be lacking, children’s Gospel meetings can be held by one brother or sister. These meetings have been wonderfully owned and blessed of God in the last year. Singing precious Gospel hymns suited to little folks, plain forcible lessons in the way of salvation and all needed truth, followed by altar service, and sweet little testimonies, will bring down the blessings of God, and oft in a single meeting result in more real good than a whole summer’s routine of Sabbath schools where direct salvation work is lacking. We have written some precious hymns for the children’s meetings, and we will print some, and they can be procured at the office. We recently had some precious children’s meetings at Tampico, Ind. We had a few of the songs with us, which they soon learned, and made them ring, and we felt it our duty to have some printed for the use of the children’s meetings. I believe we have plates for five songs, with music. We can furnish the set for five cents, and ten sets for about thirty- five cents. Put ten in the hands of a congregation of children, and they will all learn them in a short time. In one of them is this verse:

There is something for children to do,
In the vineyard of Jesus to-day;
They can speak gentle words as they go,
They can preach little sermons and pray.

So when we asked the children questions and they answered them correctly, we remarked that good little preachers must prove by the Bible all they preach. So we turned to the Scripture in proof and the little preachers enjoyed standing up and reading it to the people, thus establishing what they preached. This proved an interesting exercise, and made the little boys and girls feel quite confident. We suggest this to other brethren. O, let there be meetings of some kind held for the children in every town and community, where God has His lights stationed, and teach the children the saving truth of heaven, looking for immediate results. Amen!

QUESTIONS.

_____

1st. Is a man fit to be an elder who is married to a divorced woman under any circumstance?

2nd. Is there any difference between a Bishop and an Elder?

3rd. Should not these things be diligently enquired into before we ordain people?

ANSWER TO THE

1st. While the Word of God forbids men entering into such marriages, we believe there are circumstances under which it has been done ignorantly, in which God may forgive the parties. Such may be fit for the office, so far as relates to moral and Christian character, and to the neccesary gifts. And such may even be used of God, if He sees fit, to warn men to flee from sin and the wrath of God, and while they present the real fruits of the Spirit of God in a holy life, should not be hindered in whatever good work God may see fit to use them. But moral and intellectual fitness for a position is one thing, and Scriptural eligibility for that office is an other thing. On the latter point we can only say as the word does, and cannot advise any one to act contrary to its obvious import.

“A Bishop must be blameless, the husband of one wife.” — 1 Tim. 3:2.

“If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children, not accused of riot, or unruly.” — Titus 1:6.

Namely, must not have more than one wife, and if the parent of children, they must show their governing ability by having their children in subjection.

Answer to 2nd. Yes, they are the same See Titus 1:5, 7.

Answer to 3rd. By all means.

EDITORIAL NOTES.

We recently received a letter from Lucy J. Sims, the colored evangelist, stating that she now has a large Gospel tent erected at Riverside, Cal. May many souls be brought into the fold of Christ.

__________

Bro. B. F. Armitage of Kenesaw, Neb has recently visited Buckingham, Kankakee Co. Ill., and reports that a good work could be done there if a holy preacher could go there and hold meeting. A Mr. Beardsley in that place offered a hall free of charge. O that God would raise up and send forth more ministers, so that all such doors could be entered. At Gardner in the adjoining Co., the Lord has a good little church, who could be visited in connection with the above place. Amen!

CONCERNING DRESS.

A Bro. writes us, doubtless in all sobriety and conscience toward God, stating that he had a vision in which he was shown that God does not want His children to wear ‘‘white shirts, stand-up collars, cuffs or dude hats.” As to what is meant by the latter we may not know exactly. But certainly God’s children should purchase hats as far as possible that are of a plain appearance, for comfort and durability, and not to conform to any special style of the world. And we would say that we find it much more convenient and healthful to wear one good heavy woolen shirt in the winter, and one light woolen shirt in the summer. This avoids much labor of washing, and reduces our baggage a great deal, having only one change with us at a time. But as to making it a matter of conscience, an item of our religion, we have no thus saith the Lord for saying it is wrong to wear a white shirt, no more than a shirt of color. A brother told ns that the old Mennonites used to church their members for wearing colored shirts. They had as much authority for so doing as any has for judging a brother for wearing a colorless shirt. Nothing should be worn for pride, whether white or colored; but the Word of God gives no person room to judge another on the color of his shirt. As to the vision that forbids the use of collars and cuffs, we have too correct an idea of neatness, cleanliness, and decency than to think that we should go without such things to protect our clothes from becoming greasy and slovenous from sweat, etc., about our neck and wrists. If a persons ideality is so flat that the utility and principle of cleanliness involved in these things is not discerned, such an one would most likely ascribe their use to pride, but it is not the case with such whose finer feelings would create a sensation of shame and indecency without such shields to our clothes. We cannot claim absolute authority for visions. They sometimes arise from an excited imagination. Some years ago a sister in Mich. who had been very proud and vain gave her heart to God, and consecrated to live unto all pleasing in His sight. She prayed the Lord to show her how to make her clothes. The Lord appeared to her in a very sublime vision, and across His arm He held to view a dress made perfectly plain, and from the sleeves slightly projected plain white cuffs, and a white collar from the neck. Now if the aw of cleanliness sanctions such for the sisters, why not for the men? And if the Lord endorsed it several years ago, would He condemn the same in a vision now? Whether a collar is single — called stand-up — or double there is no difference except that the former is more simple and pliable. But in either case they should not be worn for any thing but to protect the clothes; therefore the collar should not stand high above the coat collar, nor the cuffs project in vain display. Gold or silver or any thing resembling them should not be worn in cuff or collar buttons by the saints. But in all matters of clothing the Scriptures give no one grounds to judge another, save on points of cleanliness, neatness, — “decent and in order” — and on plainness. In dress, as well as in all things, this is the law of our God: Do all things to His glory. Amen!

Bro. J. W. Byers, we are informed, is studying the Chinese language. We should not be surprised if God would send him to the ancient empire to publish salvation. Bro. Schroder is a native of Scandinavia and has been preaching to the people of his mother tongue in Cal., and expects to publish the glorious Gospel in his native country. For some time the fire has been burning in our heart to have the pure unsectarian Gospel of God sent to every nation. It must be, it will be done in the name of Jesus. A leading missionary in India some ago confessed that the poor heathens need and want our Christ, but not our sect and creeds. The latter are a stumbling block to them. O God, send them the pure Gospel. Amen!

The St. Louis, Mich. camp meeting will begin the Lord willing June 24th 1891, and continue about 9 days. The holy people have procured a beautiful new camp ground for permanent use only two or three miles from St. Louis, Gratiot Co. Mich., and we hope a great number of good substantial tents will be erected. The camp is pleasant, dry and shady, and well watered by both a creek and strong springs. This permanent and suitable encampment was much needed there, and we hope God will abundantly bless and reward whom He has moved to give the same. I hope the saints will not be slothful or neglectful to turn out and help prepare the ground, watering place etc. Bro. and sister Walters, appoint a time and call all willing hearts to the work

The camp ground is between St. Louis and Alma, both quite large towns. St Louis is on the Toledo & Ann Arbor R. R and the Saginaw division of the Detroit Lansing & Northern R. R. We hope to attend the meeting at that place, and may the Lord send an army of baptized workers. Every body that loves God and wishes to seek His favor is invited. For any particulars address Bro. A camp meeting is called for by Bro. E, Barker at Onekama, Manistee Co. Mich. in Aug. or Sept. The Bro. writes that a good work of grace has been wrought there and quite a number of souls are standing in Christ only, but needing more teaching on the way of Divine truth they are exposed to sectish snares. He says, “Here is as good a field for the Gospel to be preached as I know. Onekama is a summer resort.” The brother is praying that God may send some one there soon filled with the fire of God, to teach the people the true way of God. Cannot Bro. Grover or Bro. Sheldon visit that place soon. And also arrange for the camp meeting.

NEWS FROM THE FIELD

Welland, Ont.

Dear Saints: — Since our last report the Lord has been with us in saving power. The work never seemed more precious than now. There has been a good many consecrations, and the Lord is moving in Buffalo and Ft. Erie. We are trusting the Lord to send some German help for the meeting it Buffalo, N. Y. I trust the Lord will send Bro’s. Martz and Gilger of Pa. A company of holy workers could find a good field here. The work of the Lord is in a prosperous condition. Ten or twelve saints came to Candasville, where we were holding a few meetings, and the little ones were greatly strengthened. There were five baptized, and twenty saints took part in the ordinances at that place. Praise the Lord! We then came to Bro. Kennedy’s, where about twenty live saints assembled.

Auburn, Ind. May 25, 1891.

To all the Saints Greeting: — May God bless you all with the riches of His grace and glory. Amen! On the 13th we met with the church in a blessed prayer meeting in Cramer’s house two miles east of this place, where we held four services, closing with a glorious ordinance meeting on the 7th. O the showers of blessings and heavenly love were indeed preci0us to all. Hallelujah! Bless the Lord! It resulted in a precious settling and advancement of the saints into the deeper fulness of the Spirit and glory of God. The ordnance meeting was the most glorious and heavenly we have attended. All seemed blessed and refreshed. Though the school house was filled and crowded with people we had the best of order to the last. All seemed awe stricken and spell-bound because of the glorious presence of Him who said, “If ye know these things, happy are ye if you do them.” The attendance was good, and a good impression made on the minds of the people. The evening of the 24th we preached the Word in the power of the Spirit in the grove bethel meeting house about four miles south east of Auburn. In this neighborhood the Gospel of Christ had not been preached in all its purity before. The Word had good effect on the people who were assembled in a very large congregation, and clouds of darkness and prejudice were broken and rolled away. We doubt not that if a series of meetings could be held there souls would be saved. Praise God for the triumphs of His truth and perfect salvation. The 28th we leave for Kendall, Mich., and meeting the 30th to last till the Bangor camp meeting, which we expect to attend D. V. Love to all the holy people. Pray for us and the success of His work of salvation and truth. Amen.

Yours sanctified wholly, sitting at His feet.

Galesburgh, Kan. May 25, 1891.

Grace, mercy and peace be multipled to all God’s dear children. Our last report was from Humboldt, Kan. The dear Lord gave us a precious meeting in that part. A few souls were sweetly saved and sanctified. To God be all the glory. Five dear ones followed their Savior in the ordinance of baptism. It was a precious scene on account of the melting power of God present. There were also a few cases of healing by the power of God. The saints were strengthened and built up. From there we went about eight miles and held a week’s meeting in a school house where the evening light had not been preached before. Good seed was sown, but no souls yielded. From there we went about five miles and held a week’s meeting in another school house two miles from Chanute. Had good success. Some dear souls were reclaimed and made free in Christ, and one sanctified that had never been clear before. Praise the Lord! There was also a wonderful case of healing. Dear sister Sweeny got her ankle sprained very badly and a bone in her foot dislocated, which made her deathly sick. Hands were laid on at once, and prayer was made for her recovery. The sickness all left her immediately, and the bone soon went back to its place, but her foot swelled up and she did not walk alone on it until the next day. The Lord gave her the promise: “And immediately bis feet and ankle bones received strength,” Acts 3:1, and she applied the words to herself, got up and put on her shoe and walked around, went to meeting that evening, and has been well from that time on. Her husband being a doctor said, just before the Lord healed her, it would be three or four weeks before she could walk. O praise the dear Lord! Meeting closed with a precious little ordinance meeting. Seven saints present and took part. We would love to be with you at the Bangor camp meeting, but the way is not open for us to come, therefore remember us and God’s work in these parts at the camp meeting.

Yours in the bonds of perfect love, saved and kept by the power of God.

Payne, O. May 26, 1891.

Dear Brethren: — We gladly report to you all that prosperity of both soul and body through the blessings of God is granted unto us. Amen! Bro. A. J. Kilpatrick and our company have been together for some time in the Master’s vineyard. God has been accompanying the Gospel, making it a “Savor of life unto life, or of death unto death.” We closed the meeting at Hannah Kilpatrick’s with four consecrations, some for pardon others tor sanctification. God bless them with fidelity to Him. One merely went through the form of consecration without paying the price or receiving anything.

Bro. A. J. Kilpatrick and myself held a meeting at Jerry City, O., which proved a great success to God’s people there; fortifying them against the assaults of the devil, and paving the way, we trust, for much good to he done in a future grove meeting, D. V. Returning to Payne Bro. Andrew Byers and Frankie Miller joined us, and we opened an engagement on Satan’s fort over on the river near Antwerp, O., in which meeting some were justified and sanctified. Praise the Lord for all that was accomplished. God bless the few chosen and faithful saints there. Bro. A. J. K. starts to Decatur, Mich. Friday the 29th, and we go to Allegan, Mich. the same day, D. V. So we shall be with you at the camp meeting, God opening the way. We are truly anxious to greet our brethren at the office and elsewhere in Mich.

News From the Foreign Field

Liberia, West Africa, Apr. 28, 1891. Greeting to the Editor of the Gospel Trumpet and all its honest Readers: — And many thanks to the one whose heart the Lord inclined to send some copies to Africa to one the least of all saints.

Thanks be to God! I live, am well,
Good news from Africa’s soil I tell,
On the way to heaven I am,
I’ll work for God while I can.

I have nothing in the dark, I belong to no oath-bound secret combination. To the Trumpet and all those papers that come out so bold against the popular sins of the corrupt churches, we say, look out for a general persecution from the beast. That is what is wanting to bring the saints of the Most High closer into one visible fold, and leave no room to say, “our church,” but as Christ said, “My Church.” Great care should be taken on the part of those to whom God gives light not to condemn or judge too rashly. It might happen to us as it did to Elijah, when he honestly thought he was the only one belonging to Israel’s God. But there were 7,000 which he did not know had the light of God in them. But it is the duty of all true saints to walk and talk for Jesus. Such a walking in the light as Christ is in the light not only brings us in fellowship with the Father and His Son Jesus Christ, but with the saints, who have the mind and Spirit of Christ, and have the prayer of Christ answered, which He prayed to His Father, that all whom He gave Him might be one as He and the Father are one. I shall use my influence in favor of such a prayer. May God hasten the time when all the partition walls built by men’s opinions and the devil’s devices may be broken down, and every true saint take a firm stand for the Master, without partiality or hypocrisy. Amen! and amen!! I have been in Africa since Dec. 9, 1890, according to the revelation God gave me years ago. This God filled out for me so honestly and perfectly it left no room for imagination. I have been led by my divine Master to preach in the Gail in Monrovia, capital of Liberia, in different houses of worship built by different names, and to the naked heathen under the open heaven. O how pitiful to look upon these poor creatures unclothed both soul and body. Thousands in America dress very stylish for show on the outside, while inside the soul is naked. They refuse the robe of righteousness and the garment of salvation on the easy terms of the Gospel, not willing to come down with Mary at the feet of Jesus. O what a pity! Thousands of such profess Christianity.

I had my work for some months among the heathen and Mohammedans. I teach the Mohammedans the English language.

My scholars, the chief 62 years old, down to five and six years. You should see the little naked boys come running and leaping, rejoicing to shake the white man’s hand. I am the only white man within 14 miles of their town. It takes much grace to be a regular laborer among these colored people. Yet Jesus said, “Preach the Gospel to every creature.” I am laboring in nine native towns besides the Mohammedan towns. In May, when the rainy season comes, I may be hindered in getting through the woods in the low places. My services are all under the open heaven among the heathen.

There has been war among the colored and Mohammedan tribes. They had a bloody fight eight miles from where I preached. Reported 19 killed. I met the men in the woods with swords and spears, the women with butcher knives. As I pass them I say, “how do,” some say, “how do dady.” They call the white man dady. I am well prepared, a little pocket knife which I need when I eat, and Jesus in my heart, and remember what the Lord said, “one shall chase a thousand and two put ten- thousand to flight.” I walk on and sing through the woods, “Jesus, Jesus, all the way long with Jesus.” The third Sunday evening in April after filling my 9th appointment in the 9 small towns, I went to bed very tired. About eleven o’clock there was a knock at my door, I said, what is wanted? The answer was, “a man came and gave warning that none should go to bed all night, the war enemy was coming.” I said, do not be alarmed, I will get upon my knees and pray that God may keep them back. I did so, then went back to bed again. The most stayed up nearly all night. Daylight came, I got up and thanked the Lord for the good rest, and having answered my prayer. “Ask and it shall be given you.” Christ never told a lie. God willing I shall celebate to His glory my 50th spiritual birthday in Africa next August 17th. Then when I shall be justified between me and God, leave those heathen with more tears then when I left Home. Then I had hopes to return, but when I leave these dear saints I never expect to come back with my hard worn body. I believe God has work for me yet in America, and Ontario. It I was 25 years younger I would not think of going back so soon. But O I get so tired, no horse here, nor railroad. Yet I am very thankful to God. Four months and 19 days in Africa, not one day in bed sick yet.

O what a mercy shown to me!
God’s providential hand I see.
I’ll trust Him still for future days,
While walking in true wisdom’s ways.

The devil has his work already in some of the African churches. Pride, secret societies, and ungodly picnics. I reprove such ungodly works in public. Some preachers sided with me, gave me credit. I had to clear my conscience or feel condemned. I find it is best to finish for God as we go, then we realize perfect love as we go. If all the true Christians would unite in love to Christ and use their undivided efforts to win souls for heaven, the gospel might soon be preached to every creature. Then the end shall come.” So Christ said. I will now bring my weak lines to a closed- questing all the tree saints to remember me and all the honest missionaries in their prayers. If God will ever bring me again to Michigan, I shall, if God so directs, go to visit the Christians at Grand Junction.

Dearly Beloved Saints: — This is my first testimony to the Trumpet. When I was unsaved I would read the testimonies of the saved in the Trumpet, and of their joy and peace in Christ. It filled my soul with such an intense longing that I knew no rest until Jesus saved and sanctified me wholly. I am mow able to shout the praise of God for salvation, and a soul filled with glory. How I do praise the name of Jesus for leading me out of darkness into light

“I’m on my glorious way,
I’m walking in the road,
Where faithful pilgrims never stray
While trusting in the Lord.”

Your sister saved and sanctified.

Dear Saints: — The Lord healed me of La grippe last January. To God be all the glory. My faith used to be strong on the line of healing, but I let the adversary get the advantage of me by listening to others. When sister Miller came here last winter I was taking medicine, and all my old diseases were coming back on me as soon as I let my faith fail. While sister Miller was stopping here a few days, a voice whispered to me: “God would heal all our diseases if we would trust Him.” I gave up all human aid, and fell at Jesus feet, and asked sister Miller to help me pray God to heal me again. Praise the Lord! I am a great deal better, but not healed of all my troubles yet, and want you to pray that I may be made every whit whole. There are many who doubting ask:

“But can He from inbred pollution deliver?
Yes, glory to Jesus forever and ever!
Believing the promise I know it, I feel it,
The blood and the Spirit now witness and seal it.

But they ask again:

Can we live in this world without sinning?
Yes, perfect salvation my heart is e’er singing.
We live in the Spirit, are kept by the power,
Just walking with Jesus each moment and hour.”

O glory to God! Sinner friend, bear in mind we must have a holy heart if we ever get to heaven. For without holiness no man shall see God. Pray much for me, and my dear family.

Your sister saved now.

Dear Saints: — We are still in the line of duty, keeping up prayer meetings and spreading the glad tidings of true Bible holiness. Glory to God! “Wherefore Jesus that He might sanctify the people with His own blood suffered without the gates.” — Heb. 13:12. Some teach that we attain this holiness at death. But my Bible does not teach me any such doctrine. See Luke 1:14-75. “That he may grant unto us that we being deliverd out of the hand of the enemy, might serve Him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life.”

“If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ and to the doctrine which is according to godliness, he is proud knowing nothing.” But God is not the author of confusion, but of peace; therefore He calls to His people to come out of babylon, and be not partakers of her sins.

Dear Brethren: — I will add my testimony this morning. I am saved and trusting in God with all my mind, heart, and strength. Praise God forever and ever! I take the Lord for my physician. He is my helper in ever time of need. Glory to Jesus! The Lord justified my soul, ant afterwards sanctified my nature, by a second work of grace, to do His will. Praise God! Dear saints pray mightly for us here. There are only three shining lights here. Pray much for me as I am the only one in my large family that is saved. Pray for my husband, he believes the way of Jesus.

Dear Saints: — I am led of the Spirit to testify for Jesus. He has forgiven my sins and cleansed me from all wickedness, and the Holy Ghost has sanctified me through and through, soul, body and spirit, and I am never left without the help of our blessed Master. We find in the holy Scriptures that “Faith without works is dead,” and “Without faith it is impossible to please God.” Then we must have both faith and good works. If we go and preach to the people that they must keep the command, have faith in Jesus, and yet take medicine when unwell, where is our faith? Do not forget that Jesus said, “As thou believest so shall it be done unto thee.” Are you sick, ask the Lord to heal you with a hearts desire according to His holy will, and it shall and must be done. If we are poor and needy do not complain. There is a far better way than this. We should get down on our knees and praise His holy name that He has kept riches from us, which would be a snare to our souls. And He has made us rich in His blessed Son Jesus. Now if we have the standard of the Gospel too low, sinners will sink into darkness. We never get it too high if we remain by the words of our blessed Master Jesus. So cry aloud, and spare not. These words we find in the holy Scriptures: “Be ye holy for I am holy. “Without holiness no man shall see God.”

Dear Brethren: — I feel led of God to write my testimony. I am kept by the power of God free from all satanic influences. I have not been living at this place long, but the Lord has made a way for me to preach to the people. They are becoming very much astonished. Some think my Bible is not like theirs till they read their own. Then they wonder why they did not see these Scriptures before. I told them that when they turned to the Lord with their whole heart the veil would be taken away, and they could see clearly. I do praise God that I can teach without teaching my own way, which I could not do when I was in the sects. I thank God from the depths of my heart that there is none of the leaven of the Pharisees in my heart or mind. I am so glad to see all the testimonies of the dear saints. Pray for me, all ye saints.

Dear Saints: — I am glad this afternoon that I can testify to the goodness of God. He saves my soul and gives me that peace which the world cannot give, neither can it take away as long as we trust in the Lord. I know this afternoon that I can offer a complete sacrifice of praise to God for what He has done for me. He gives me victory over every thing. I am nothing only what God makes me, determined to serve God in spite of all things else. I have been reading a good deal of late how God led Moses and the children of Israel, and it was through strict obedience to the Word of God through His servant Moses that they were able to accomplish any thing. Now Jesus is to us what Moses was to the children of Israel. And we have His Word as a lamp to our feet and a guide in our pathway. And He has promised that His Spirit will lead us into all truth. Pray for me that I may keep under the blood and forevermore do the will of God.

Dear Saints: — I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony and a little of my experience. I realize this morning that the very God of peace saves and sanctifies me wholly by and through the blood of the Lamb. I am praising God that I ever heart, the truth preached in its purity, and that I had humiliation enough in my heart to accept the grand doctrine of Jesus Christ. Oh praise His holy name!

I was converted in 1874, and not having the light of sanctification, I attached myself to the Baptist sect. Not being taught that there was a higher plain of Christianity than I had already attained, and being taught by the sect preachers that there was a principle within the hearts of God’s people as well as in the hearts of all men that would bring forth sin, I concluded from such education that I was a Christian sinner. The only consolation that I could gather in this dreadful state of affairs, was our blind leaders would tell us that Jesus was ready to atone at night for the sins we would commit through each day of our lives. I, of course, as a great many others do, drifted back into sin, and often rebeled against God. I was then chastised by the hand of the Lord by affliction in my family, and by taking from us our darling little ones, until I was made to see that I had brought on these sad afflictions by disobedience to God. So I went to the Lord and repented. I still being in benighted darkness in regard to the truth, joined the Cumberland Presbyterian sect in 1885. So I dragged along with them in their dead formalty until 1889, when the blessed evening light was preached in our midst. I then saw at once that that was just what my soul was hungering and thirsting after. So I began seeking the blessing at once, and the Lord saved my soul and made me happy in His love. Glory to God for salvation that saves me from sin and frees me from sects, and all earthly organizations. I thank God that I feel free, just as free as the Book of truth records. Jesus in speaking to those Jews which believed on Him said: “If ye continue in my word then are ye my disciples indeed, and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” — Jno. 8:31, 32. These precious words fell from the lips of our Savior to those Jews that believed on Him at that time, and not only them but all that would believe throughout the world. Being so deeply impressed with this free dom, thank God, I began to search the Word, when these precious words came under my observation in a different light than they ever did before: “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers; for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness, and what communion hath light with darkness? — 2 Cor. 7:14. Praise God! I could then see the great contrast between the two; and glory to God! I now feel deep down in my heart the freedom that the Son gives. I am free indeed. Dear saints, pray for me that I may always he found faithful, and low down at the Savior’s feet.

Your brother in Christ.

George H. Lull was born in Lyle, Boone Co. N. Y. Feb. 4, 1812. Came to Mich. in 1840. Died near Lacota, Van Buren Co. Mich. May 31st, at the ripe old age of 79 years, 3 mo’s. and 27 days. How early in fife father Lull began to serve the Lord we have not been informed. But for several years we have known him as one of the faithful saints that met with the church at Bro. Smith’s as long as he was able to attend. He suffered much during the last winter. As the dear ones at the Trumpet office oft staid with him, he expressed a desire to five until we came home. Thank the Lord! We had the privilege of visiting him several times after our return, and we always found him trusting in the Lord. And on every inquiry he expressed himself fully ready to depart and be with the Lord. His prospects were all glorious, and death had no sting or dread to him. By his request we spoke to the people on his funeral occasion of this glorious grace of God that robs death of its sting, and the grave of its victory. He leaves a wife and a large circle of friends to mourn his departure. May God bless and comfort sister Lull, who is saved in the Lord. And may Heaven’s love incline the children and many friends to follow the peaceful path of the righteous that so blest the life and closing scene of our departed father in Israel.

Bro. Edward W. Mosher died May 20th 1891, aged 21 years, 10 mo’s, and 21 days. Edward made his peace with God a few hours before he died. On the Sabbath before he passed away he was anxious to be brought to the meeting which we were then holding in Crammer’s school house two miles east of Auburn. But because of his weakness he was not brought. He was very low with consumption, but the Lord had mercy on him and saved him at home. Mother Mosher is a blessedly saved and redeemed sister in Christ and in the evening light. May the dear Lord bless and save his father and the rest of the unsaved members of the family. Amen! THE CHRISTIAN vs. FALSE TEACHERS.

A DIALOGUE.

_____

“FOR there shall arise false christs and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders, insomuch that it possible they shall deceive the very elect. Behold I have told you before.” — Matt. 24:24, 25. The counterfeit nearest resembling the genuine is always the most dangerous, because more difficult to detect Nearly all articles of high merit are counterfeited. The greater the merit of the genuine, the more numerous are the counterfeits. All counterfeits are of the devil.

God’s plan of redemption surpassing in merit, in love, mercy and immensity of conception all other inventions, and schemes and conceptions, satan the counterfeiter has never since the memorable day, when the great plan of God’s eternal salvation matured upon Mount Calvary, allowed his counterfeiting machine to rest; but as fast as one of his spurious productions was detected and exposed, he proceeds to invent new molds, and puts in circulation a new laced counterfeit. Thus after nearly nineteen hundred years of practice of counterfeiting, he is an adept now, and quick as thought he also calls some of his people “out of her” in form, because, he says, some of those who used to meet with us have had their eyes opened, and have seen through our “sect” schemes of deception; so we must interrupt them, and “if possible” deceive them in some other way. We’ll send some of our teachers among them. 2 Pet. 2:1. So satan issued his last achievement in the counterfeiting line, and branded it “The Holiness People, and wherever God plants His Church the devil plants his.

Now the question comes, is it possible to deceive the very elect? The Lord saith, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: and I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” — Jno. 10:27, 28. How do we follow Him? “Ye are my Mends if ye do whatsoever I command you.” — Jno. 15:14. Then we understand that if we keep His commandments we shall never perish, nor be deceived. The commandment to be obeyed when we meet with “Holiness People” with whom we have no fellowship, is found in 1 John 4:1 — Beloved believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God, because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” How are we to try them? “For the Word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” — Heb. 4:12. Now by the help of the Holy Spirit and Word of God, we shall try the professed “Holiness People” spirits. No one. sect believes all the Bible; neither do the devil’s “Holiness People,” because they are sectarians in disguise.

CHRISTIAN. Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost” — Acts. 2:38.

FALSE TEACHER. That means to be baptized with the Holy Ghost.

C. No, but it reads, be baptized and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

F. T. I read in Eph. 4:5, that there is but one baptism, and in Matt. 3:11, that He (Jesus) shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and I know just when I received the Holy Ghost, and to preach water baptism is to preach two baptisms.

C. But the one baptism is water baptism, for the Lord was baptized of John in Jordan. Matt. 3:13-15. But God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost. Acts 10:38.

The Lord “straightway coming up out of the water,” after He was baptized, “He saw the heavens opened and the Spirit descended like a dove upon Him.” — Mark 1:10. The Lord said, when He came to Jordan unto John to be baptized of him: “Suffer it to be so now, for so it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness.” — Matt. 3:15. Now if you were of God, and had received the Holy Ghost as you say you have, you would fulfill all righteousness by following the Savior in water baptism, because the Comforter which is the Holy Ghost, shall teach you all things,” — Jno. 14:26, and will guide you into all truth. Jno. 16:13. The Lord does not say that water baptism alone fulfills all righteousness, but because we are told to observe all things whatsoever He commanded us — Matt. 28:20, we ought to obey Him. The apostles were commanded to baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost (not with the Holy Ghost). Matt 28:19. “Can any one forbid water that these should not be baptized which have received the Holy Ghost, as well as we? And He commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord.” — Acts 10:47, 48.

F. T. Yes: but water baptism is not essential to my salvation, and I am glad that I am free from all things that gender to bondage.

C. It is written, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” — Matt. 4:4. “Every word” means that there are no nonessentials in the Bible.

F. T. O well, the Lord has saved me from hobbies. They used to baptize before the reformation, I know, but that was done away with, for St. Paul says in Heb. 6:1, 2. — “Therefore, leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection: not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of the resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.” You cannot get over that.

C. That Scripture overthrows your theory; for it speaks of the doctrine of baptisms as one of the things that is associates with perfection. One of the things to go on to, and not to leave. Baptisms includes both the literal and spiritual baptisms, while Eph. 4: 5, only the literal.

Here is also some very interesting reading: “And He took bread, and gave thanks, and break it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body, which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the New Testament in my blood, which is shed for you.” — Luke 22:19, 20.

F. T. O, that was the feast of the passover.

C. No, but it reads, “Likewise also the cup AFTER supper.” The passover was a feast of the Jews, but this. is the Lord’s supper.

F. T. He that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to his soul, not discerning the Lord’s body. For this cause many are weak among you, and many sleep. — 1 Cor. 11:29, 30. And I do not propose that any man shall convince me into losing my salvation or put me to sleep either; another thing, it is not essential to my salvation.

C. May the Lord bring you into a condition which will enable you to discern the Lord’s body, and quality you to obey the commands of Christ in sincerity, as God’s true saints love to do, and as primitive Christians did, for “they continued stadfastly in the apostles doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread and in prayer. — Acts 2:42. Do you believe in washing the saints feet?

F. T. I believe in it as a lesson in humility, it means that we are to be humble. The Lord just took that way to teach it, because in old time, it was a custom in those hot Eastern climates, where they wore no shoes, to wash each others feet as a mark of deference.

C. Well let us see. I read in 2 Cor. 5:17. Therefore, it any man be in Christ he is a new creature, old things are passed away; behold all things are become new. If all things are become new to them that are in Christ, then there must have been a change in respect to washing of feet. Let us see if the custom among God’s people of old (the Jews) has been changed or not. Did they of old wash one another’s feet as you assert they did?

“Let a little water, I pray you fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. — Gen. 18:4. They washed their own feet in Canaan.

“And the man brought the men into Joseph’s house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet.” — Gen. 43:24. They washed their own feet in Egypt. “And the man came into the house: and he ungirded his camels, and gave straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet and the men’s feet that were with him.” — Gen. 24:32. They washed their own feet in Assyria, so you see you are wrong, for the Bible does not give a single instance where they washed each others feet before the coming of the Saviour. And the Lord said, “if I then your Lord and Master have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example that you should do as I have done unto you.” — Jno. 13:14, 15. And I, being a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ, intend by His grace to follow the Lamb whithersoever He goeth, whether in baptism, or in breaking of bread, or of washing the saints feet.

F. T. Are you carried away by those foot-washers? Well, they did not catch me, and I do not intend they ever shall.

C. The Lord God sent some of His messengers through here preaching the everlasting Gospel and calling His people out of babylon, and I accepted the truth, and God saved my soul, and I now love to obey God.

F. T. Well, I have no use for foot washers, nor those that tear down the churches. I believe they are a set of fanatics.

C. Then you have no use for Christ, for He was a foot washer, and the author of the ordinance. I praise the Lord for this kind of fanaticism. The Lord Jesus Christ also teaches the unity of His one body and forbids sects. For such sects which you call churches caused Him to be put to death. Stephen was one, and those who professed to be God’s people stoned Him to death. James was another, and he was killed by Herod, and it pleased the false professors. Then he would have killed Peter also to please the Jews, but the Lord delivered him out of prison. John was banished on account of this blessed fanaticism, as you call it. Paul also was beheaded by professors, no doubt, also Peter. The martyrs of the 16th, century were put to death by professors, and they are still so doing where the law does not hold them back, and I do thank God lor a martyr’s consecration and an uncompromising spirit, and a determination to earnestly contend for the faith once delivered to the saints. Amen!

There are many other commandments, but we need not mention them, because a spirit that rejects the least commandment, will reject all, because it is anti-christ. Yet some of those who are out in the light in Denver are gone from God, and return ed to their wallow in the mire.

The saints are very welcome at these antichrist meetings unless they do their duty toward God, by testifying to His cleansing power from all sin, and try the spirits by the Word of God.

THE FINAL SEPARATION.

AND before Him shall be gathered all nations; and He shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats. — Matt. 25:32 What are the sheep? “But ye believe me not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me. — Jno. 10:26, 27. But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. — Jno. 10:2, 3. And ye my flock, the flock of my pasture, are men, and I am your God.” — Eze. 34:31. He calleth them by name. What name? And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the Lord shall name. Behold, the Lord hath proclaimed unto the end of the world, say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh, behold His reward is with Him, and His work before Him. And they shall call them the holy people, the redeemed of the Lord: and thou shalt be called sought out, a city not forsaken. — Isa. 62:2, 11, 12. Sought out from whence? As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among Ms sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day. — Eze. 34:12. What is the cloudy and dark day?

1st. The dark day, is the reign of Roman Catholicism, 1260 years from the decline of spirituality 270 A. D. to 1530 A. D., when the first protestant sect was formed.

2nd. The cloudy day, is the mystified confusion of the Gospel light that Luther and his co-agitators tried to shine through the remaining clouds of error that so thickly enshrouded the moral sky. The light in glimmering rays pierced the lingering darkness, but dimly. For 350 years until the fulness of time when God by Has Word dispersed the clouds, and the evening light is now shinging without a cloud to haze the sky of heaven’s pure sanctury. He will go before Hie sheep, and when He putteth forth His sheep, He goeth before them, and the sheep follow Him for they know His voice. I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd giveth His life for the sheep. — Jno. 10:4, 11. He never requires His own to go where He does not go before, but always prepares the way before.

Who shall make the separation?

“And as for you, O my flock, thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I judge between cattle and cattle, between the ram and the he goat. — Eze. 34:17. What are the goats? Those who do not obey and follow God. “And I will purge out from among you the rebels, and them that transgress against me: I will bring them forth out of the country where they sojourn, and they shall not enter into the land of Israel: and ye shall know that I am the Lord.” — Eze. 20:38. They are rebels against God and His Word. He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not My word, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.” — Jno. 12:48. Also, rebels against His servants. “He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me, and he that despiseth me despiseth Him that sent me.” — Luke 10:16. Verily verily, I say unto you. He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and be that receiveth me receiveth Him that sent me.” — Jno. 13:20. The goats that are to be finally placed on the left hand are those who reject God’s Word as it is preached by His holy servants, ordained and sent forth by the Holy Ghost to declare His love, and His whole truth and the unsearchable riches of His salvation. Woe unto them who teach for doctrine the traditions of men for filthy lucre’s sake, who are blind leaders of the blind.

When will this separation be? When the Son of man shall come in His glory, and the holy angels with Him, then shall He sit upon the throne of His glory: and before Him shall be gathered all nations: and He shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth His sheep from the goals.” — Matt. 25:31, 32. What is the throne of His glory? God reigneth over the heathen: God sitteth upon the throne of His holiness.” — Ps. 47:8. God’s throne is holiness. Where do we find His holiness? “Thy testimonies are very sure: holiness becometh thine house. O Lord, forever.” — Ps. 93:5. What is His house? But if I tarry long, that thou shouldst know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the Church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.” — 1 Tim. 3:15. Where do we find the throne of His holiness? Cry out and shout thou inhabitant of Zion, for great is the holy one of Israel in the midst of thee. — Isa. 12:6. He will come with all His holy angels at the time when it shall be light in the evening. Then shall He separate them as the shepherd divideth the sheep from the goats. The righteous and obedient from the wicked and disobedient. How? By the awful Word of God. The word that I have spoken shall judge him in the last day. — Jno. 12:48. And the Word says whosoever abideth in Him sinneth not. — 1 Jno. 3:6. He that commiteth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifest that He might destroy the works of the devil. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for His seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil. He that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous.” — 1 Jno. 3:8-10. In what are the children of God manifest, and the children of the devil? Here God draws the line on which the final separation will take place when the secrets of all hearts shall be made known in the presence of the great judge. “But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment; for by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.” — Matt. 12:36, 37. But fornication and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you as becometh saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient, but rather giving of thanks. — Eph. 5:3, 4.

We will now draw a line of demarkation, and write GOD on the right hand and SIN on the left hand, and let you see which side you are on, the left or right,

SIN.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that committeth sin is the servant of sin. — Jno. 8:34. He that commiteth sin is of the devil, etc. — 1 Jno. 3:8. Ye are of your father the devil and the lusts of your father ye will do. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar and the father of it. — John 8:44. Ye do the deeds of your father. — 41. For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. — Rom. 6:20.

GOD.

Whosoever abideth in Him sinneth not. — 1 Jno. 3:6. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin, for His seed remaineth in Him: and he can not sin, because he- is born of God. We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not. 1 Jno. 5:18. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness and the end everlasting life. — Rom. 6:22.

In this the children of God are manifest and the children of the devil. — 1 Jno. 3:10. Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness. For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, sorcerers, and whoremongers, and idolaters and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. — Rev. 22. 14, 15. And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, saying with a loud voice, fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of His judgment is come, etc. — Rev. 14:6, 7. Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world, and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? — 1 Cor. 6:2. The saints judge the world by the Word of God, and those who reject the Word of God by the saints reject God, are placed by the Word of God on the left hand, and go into outer darkness where there is weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth. O, ye professor, which side of the line of God’s Word are you on, the right or the left. We have given the likeness of every one by the Word of God. The Son is now reigning on the throne of His holiness and the separation is begun, and will be finished in the last great day.

THINK IMMERSION.

_____

A writer in the Gospel Messenger, an advocate of the above practice, answered our recent remarks on this subject. He makes four quotations from history in support of the practice. But all his witnesses were between the middle of the third, and the beginning of the fifth century. The last quotation reads as follows:

“The doctrine of our holy mother, the Catholic Church, has always, my brethren, been with us, and doth still abide with us, and especially the article of baptism, and the trine immersion wherewith it is celebrated.”

This simply proves that trine immersion was at that time a practice of the Catholic mother of sects. Though that apostate institution had not then reached the climax of popery, we can prove by history that the mystery of iniquity had already developed into actual existence at that time. That they claimed primitive authority for the practice amounts to nothing; for every new and superstitious rife they created, — and they were many — they foisted upon Christ and the Apostles. This any student of ecclesiastical history knows. Thus says Mosheim, one of the most reliable historians: “Of the rites and ceremonies used in the Church during this (the third) century.” See page 69. “All the records of this century mention the multiplicity of rites and ceremoies in the Christian church.” And he goes on and says that the passion which then reigned for exorcism, or formal superstitions, casting out of devils, which was practiced in close connection with baptism, which the Christians had borrowed from the Platonic philosophy, or heathen superstitions, was a leading cause of this new addition to rites, and ceremonies. No wonder they then began to give men three dips. At the same time, says Mosheim, “The use of incense was introduced.” And, “several alterations were new introduced in the celebration of the Lord’s Supper.” And, in fact, nearly every element of the Divine Church was more or less subverted, and supplemented by human ceremonies. It is a very had case, when our trine immersionists must pass over the inspired history of the church, and two hundred years later before they can find one plain proof of the three dip practice. But their citations of history from the third, fourth and fifth centuries may be taken as an evidence that no earner records can be produced that will help their cause. We can however give them one earlier historical reference. Our readers remember that we remarked that the first mention of trine baptism, was followed by a remark that it transcended the command of Christ. The passage was put on record by Tertullian, who lived at the close of the second and in the beginning of the third century. Here are his words:

“We are immersed three times, fulfilling somewhat more than our Lord has decreed in the Gospel.” This writer, living in age that triune baptism took its rise, confessed that it was an innovation, one of to the many superstitious additions and ceremonies, history informs us that men had a mania for inventing at that time.

The writer also based an argument the rigid enforcement of our rules of Grammar upon Mat. 28:19. But who does not know that the Scriptures abound in idioms that cannot be resolved within the rules of English Grammar, especially is this true where the trinity of Divine persons is spoken of.
