No Sects in Heaven.

—:o:—

Talking of sects till late one eve,
Of the various doctrines the saints belief,
The night I stood in a troubled dream,
By the side of a darkly flowing stream.

And a “Churchman” down to the river came,
When I heard a strange voice call his name;
Good father, stop; when you cross the tide,
You must leave your robes on the other side.

But the aged father did not mind,
And his long gown floated out behind;
As down to the stream his way he took,
His pale hands clasp a gilt edged book.

I’m bound for heaven and when I’m there,
Shall want my Book of Common Prayer.
And though I put on a starry crown,
I should feel quite lost without my gown.

Then he fixed his eyes on the shining track,
But his gown was heavy and held him back.
And the poor, old father tried in vain
A single step in the flood to gain.

I saw him again on the other side,
But his silk gown floated on the tide.
And no one asked in that blissful spot
Whether he belonged to the “church” or not.

Then down to the river the Quaker strayed,
His dress of sober hue was made.
“My coat and hat must all be gray,
I can not go an other way.”

Then he buttoned his coat straight up to his chin,
And steadily, solemnly waded in;
And his broad brimmed hat he pulled down tight,
Over his forehead so cold and white.

But a strong wind carried away his hat,
A moment he silently, sighed over that.
And then as he gazed to the further shore,
His coat slipped off and was seen no more.

As he entered heaven his suit of gray,
Went quietly sailing away, away.
And none of the angels questioned him
About the width of his beaver’s brim.

Next came Dr. Watts with a bundle of psalms,
Tied nicely up in his aged arms,
And hymns as many, a very wise thing,
That the people in heaven all round might sing.

But I thought that he heaved an anxious sigh,
And he saw that the river rah brood and high
And looking rather surprised as one by one,
The psalms and hymns in the waves went down.

And after him, with his M. S. S.,
Came Wesley the pattern of godliness.
But ho cried, “Dear me!” what shall I do
The water has soaked them through and through.

And there on the river far and wide,
Away they went down the swollen tide.
And the saint astonished passed through alone,
Without the manuscripts up to the throne.

Then gravely walking two saints by name,
Down to the stream together came;
But as they stopped at the river’s brink,
I saw one saint from the other shrink.

“Sprinkled or plunged? may I ask you friend,
How you attained to life’s great end?”
“Thus with a few drops on my brow,”
But I have been dipped as you see me now.

And I really think it will hardly do,
As I’m Close Communion to cross with you.
Your bound I know for the realms of bliss,
But you must go that way and I’ll go this.

Then straightway plunging with all his might,
Away to the left, his friend to the right,
Aparting they went from this world of sin,
But at last together they entered in.

And now when the river was rolling on,
A presbyterian church man went down.
Of women there seemed an unusual throng,
But the men I could count as they passed along.

And concerning the road they ne’er could agree,
The old or the new way which it could be.
Nor never a moment stopped to think
That both would lead to the river’s brink.

And a sound of mourning long and loud,
Came ever up from the moving crowd.
“Your in the old way and I’m in the new,
That is the false and this is the true”
Or I’m in the old way and your in the new,
That is the false and this is the true.

But the brethren only seemed to speak:
Modest the sisters walked and meek,
And if ever one chanced to say,
“What trouble she met on the way,
How she longed to pass to the other side,
Nor feared to cross o’er the swelling tide,

A voice arose from the brethren then,
“Let not one speak but the holy men,
For have ye not heard those words of Paul,
O, let the women keep silence all?”

I watched them long in my curious dream,
Till they stood by the border of the stream,
Then, just as I thought the two ways met.
But all the brethren were talking yet
And would talk on till the heaving tide
Carried them over side by side.
Side by side for the way was one;
The toilsome journey of life was done,
And all who in Christ the Savior died,
Came out alike on the other side.

No forms, or creeds, or books had they
No gown of silk or suits of gray
No creed to guide them or M. S. S.,
For all had put on Christ’s righteousness.

NO SECTS IN HEAVEN.

—o—

THERE is a good deal of truth in the above poem. It is a fact that men have to cast away all their sect badges and idols, and all that enter heaven are of one heart and of one mind. But while the author saw clear enough that there would be no sects in heaven, he made a very great mistake in locating the point at which the sect appertenances are swept away. The poem pictures all the various isms carried through life and down into the stream of natural death, and merging therefrom all alike. Had the author used his river to denote the Jordon of death to inbred sin with the Canaan of holiness beyond, instead of heaven, the picture would have been Scriptural. Natural death does not unify, but “He that sanctfieth and they who are sanctified are all one.” It is disgusting to talk of souls differing and disunited until they pass into natural death and then coming therefrom all united on the shores of Eternity. They who go down into the throes of death divided, will merge into the nest world divided, and consequently unfit for Heaven. Excepting where the division lies between holiness and unholiness, in which case they on the side of holiness will enter Heaven, not however being in the hour of death qualified, but by the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. It is sickening to talk of men “attaining unto life’s great end,” by either baptism, or babylon sprinkling. And the idea that men have not fellowship, and can not walk together in this life, but blend together after passing death’s door is a falsehood. With much error the poem teaches however this truth, that sectism has no place in Heaven.

THE CHURCH OF THE GOD OF THIS WORLD.

—:o:—

WE once spake of our unwillingness to call a class of people Winebrennarians out of respect for J. Winebrenner, a departed good man; and yet we dared not call that sect the Church of Cod, out of reverence for Cod, not willing to ascribe to the Holy Ghost such an unholy thing. But we recollect the Word says that “there are gods many, and lords many.” These are the gods of this world, and to some of these gods, the sect calling itself the Church of God, appertains. But the Church of God set forth in the New Testament, is the body of Christ, the fulness of Him that fitteth all in all. — Eph. 1:22, 23. Col. 1:18, 24. Into this holy Church “Now hath God set the members every one as it hath pleased Him.” “And the Lord added to the Church daily such as should be saved.” Thus saith the Lord, “I am the door, by me if any man enter he shall be saved.” Christ is the door, and salvation the process of induction. But let us look at the sect of the Cod of this world. I quote from Church Advocate of Feb. 22. 1888.

“Six persons professed faith in Christ and five were added to the Church of God.”

“There was a mighty awakening of the Church, and truly the Spirit of God was felt. There were several shouts heard in the old bethel once more, which have not been heard for a period of four or five years. Fourteen made the good profession, eleven came into fellowship with the church.”

“The meeting lasted about four weeks, and it resulted in the hopeful conversion of twenty-two persons; accessions twenty- nine.”

“I have just closed a meeting which resulted in eight conversions, and four additions to the church.”

These quotations are suficient to exhibit the confusion and deception in the sect of the God of this world. They falsely call it “the Church of God,” but every feature proves it a base counterfeit. God does not set the members into it at all. When men are converted they are by that experience added to the “true vine,” or “Church of the living God.” But after souls are taken into God’s Church by the process of salvation, these false teachers’ spread their net and draw in as many as possible. In one place six professed faith in Christ, and five were added to the Church of God. In another place eight were converted and only four added to the church. And in still another, fourteen were converted and only eleven came into fellowship with the church.

We see that these writers make conversion one thing, and accession to the church, another thing, which proves that what they call the church, is not the divine Church, but a sect of this world. Why do they count so many converted, and a less or greater number taken into what they call the church? This is a clear confession that their so called church of God, is nothing but a sect of man. In the Church of God conversion is accession to the Church. And the number converted at any given place is the number added to, or received into the fellowship of the Church at that place. Babylon reports fourteen converted, and only eleven of them received into fellowship. Why not fellowship the other three? why make a difference? does this read like the record of God’s Church? Not at all.

Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. — Acts 2:41, 42.

Nothing is said about so many being converted, and a less or greater number taken into fellowship. But as many as received the Word, and were converted, were added to them, and the same number continued in the apostles’ fellowship. They were not first converted, and afterward some added to the Church, and fellow- shipped, and others left out. Fellowship is not some formal handshaking, but is “of the Spirit” — Phil. 2:1.

The Church of God is the whole body of Christ. And the Church in any given locality includes all the members of Christ in that place. A sect, is a separated faction or division. Sect is from sectum, a section or part. This Church of the little — g-god is nothing but a sect, from the fact it only gets a part of the converts, even of their own meetings. It is an organization that is not constituted by the salvation of souls. According to their own language, many souls may be saved in a place, and yet their concern may have no existence at all. Its existence does not co-exist with the salvation of souls; but depends upon the good luck of their fish-net to inclose men alter they are already saved into the Church of the Living God. They clearly acknowledge their misnamed, man-rigged craft is a sect when they confess that men are truly born of God, and still remain out of it’s pale. And to call it the Church of God, is blasphemy. It is not created by the salvation of souls, nor does it increase by the increase of God. But it takes its existence by inviting men to take a seat on a certain bench, give their hand to the preacher, and suffer their names to be written down on earth according to prophecy in Jer. 17:13. No matter how many children of God may be in that place, — and all such are in the real Church of God — If any one responds to the invitation, takes that seat, and gives his hand and name, that thing called the “Church in North America” is without existence in that place. No church is reported by them as organized there, no addition swells their numerical strength. Their enrolled membership is not a copy of the Lamb’s book of life in Heaven, which is the class-book of the Church of God; but is simply a list of christians and sinners who were willing to be bound together under a man-made system of co-operation, and be loyal to the machinery of that sect. These facts can not be gainsaid. The Church of God “increases with the increase of God.” But a whole district may become saved, and filled with God, and that organization falsely called the Church of God, in America has no existence there at all. The Church of God proper includes all saved men in any locality; the little g. sect confesses that many saved men in the vicinity of their operations are not in their fold, hence they are not the Church but a sectism.

The distinction between this young proud sect, and the Church of God is most strikingly seen in the difference of their moral character. The Church of God into which God sets the members, is “without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but is holy and pure. — Eph. 5: Rom. 11:16. But the sect that has disgraced the same name is cursed with pride, largely soaked with tobacco, sectish and carnal.

The editor in the paper above quoted says, “So does every christian carry with him some sort of a thistle plucked from the old man, or honey from the new man with which to bless or curse men. Both the new man and the old man are acknowledged as representing the christian character, and all christians are either spreading thistles from the old man in him or honey from the new man. Doubtless he speaks from his own experience, the old man being prominent in him: but he should learn how to go on to perfection, and have Bible salvation, in which “the old man is crucified, and the body of sin destroyed.” But he thinks every christian carries a thistle. This is not real christianity, but babylon religion.

But the sons of Belial shall be all of them as thorns thrust away because they cannot be taken with hands. But the man that shall touch them must be fenced with iron and the staff of a spear; and they shall be utterly burned with fire in the same place. — 2 Samuel 23:6, 7.

But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned. — Heb. 6:8.

That they may do evil with both hands earnestly, the prince asketh, and the judge asketh for a reward, and the great man, he uttereth his mischievious desire: so they wrap it up. The best of them is a brier; the most upright is sharper than a thorn hedge: the day of thy watchmen and thy visitation cometh; now shall be their perplexity. — Micah 7:3, 4.

This thorn, brier and thistle religion is a good description of the leading elements of the sect that has stolen the name of God’s own Church. The ministry in general are a lot of selfish, camel backsliders. Some of them even possessed with devils, and as destitute of righteous principle as satan himself. As God desires to save honest souls out of that cage as well as out of all other babylonish enclosures, we will just let a little light on the unclean birds in her.

Years ago a meeting-house was built by the people near Yellow Lake. Kosciusko Co. Ind. About twelve years’ ago there was a split in the so called Church of God in Ind., on the Secret Society issue. The congregation at that place took their stand against secret bad worship, and the house being deeded to the church in that place, and not to the Eldership at large, they held and used the house, not however refusing any other the privilege of occupying the same also. When God led us to renounce the sect rigging entirely, many refused to walk in the light, and lost salvation. The little new canoe sank, and the old house stood unocmpled, and rotting down. But a year ago last Winter the present truth, and Holy Ghost fire was received there, and the former desolations were raised up. Saints went to work and made the house almost as good as a new one, from roof to foundation. Now conies a devil possessed priest of the old filthy cage and requests the privilege to occupy the house to hold a meeting. The saints knowing he was unfit to take the name of Christ in his polluted lips nevertheless, concluded that the best way to get rid of the nuisance was to let it show up. So they gave the key. A protracted meeting was held, of course with no success. The preacher then locked the door, drove wood into the keyhole of the other door, took the key with him home, a distance of about twenty miles. Forbid the saints the privilege of worshipping God in their own house. Pretended to organize a church of a few sinners, elected some of them trustees, all unsaved sinners, and one of them the most profane man in the community, and pretended to claim the property. The saints however continued to worship there; and the representative of the beast finding he could get no lawful clue on the house abandoned his cluster of thistles.

He put up a notice that on the last Saturday of March 1888, a meeting would be held there to try the rights of property. About forty saints went there. In regular babylon style a chairman was appointed by the beast spirits, the saints were utterly refused a word. After the pandimony went on some time, the saints struck up and sang “Now the great king of Babel,” etc., when the babel crew all arose and left the house to Zion’s sons. Hallelujah!

—:o:—

WINNING SOULS.

—:o:—

“Are you winning souls to Christ?” were; the words a brother wrote to me a few days ago. We are told in the book of all books, “He that winneth souls is wise.” This work is assigned to every true child of God, and to neglect it is to disregard the Divine command, go and work in my vineyard. The time is short and the devil is busy doing his work of wickedness; hence there is no lime to waste. But are we really winning souls to Christ, or to some creed or sect? or to some opinion or doctrine of men?

To win souls to Christ we must be qualified by the real baptism from the throne. Without this the work will be a failure. Every child of God needs the unction. We may talk, sing, pray, and persuade, yet without the Holy Ghost it will be like chaff that will be burned with unquenchable fire. It is mockery to attempt to work for God without first being qualified. The disciples were commanded to tarry in Jerusalem until they were endued with power from on high. — Luke 24:49. If Jesus required this of them, surely He requires it of His children now. To win souls signifies to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of satan unto God. That they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheiritance among them that are sanctified. — Acts 56:18. Many souls who are claimed to be won are walking in the same darkness that they always had. With others their darkness is even greater than before the attempt was made to win them. Why is this? because they were never won to God, but to man, or to some sect or creed. A soul that is truly won to Christ, passes out from under the power of satan unto the power of God, and seeks an inheiritance among them that are sanctified. How many so called won souls to Christ cease to walk according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience. — Eph. 2:2. They live like the world, dress like the world, and do as the world does; wearing jewelry and costly apparel, which things are positively forbidden in God’s Word. Smoking and chewing tobacco, (yes and frequently their pastors are guilty of the same wickedness;) indulging in foolish talking, jesting, and corrupt communication, going to parties, dances, county fairs, taking an active part in all the worldly institutions, festivals, socials, politics, (and some of the lowest grade) even connecting themselves with the ungodly secret societies. God says in His Word that He will have a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

I Now if they are truly won to Christ they will be so peculiar they will separate themselves from the world, neither will they have any fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness. Thousands of souls are gathered in the abominable sects, their names registered on some sect record and the preachers vainly imagine that they are won to Christ. When a true child of God going in their midst can plainly see that they have no fellowship what ever with God or the saints of God, with all their trappings and fixings of the world on them; with all their sect machinery in operation they have nothing but a form of godliness denying the power.

A truly won soul to Christ will put away all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. — 2 Cor. 7:1. A soul that is justified and sanctified is fully won to Christ. Without holiness no man shall see the Lord. It is not an unfrequent thing that young converts who are gathered in the different sects will fall in line of fighting holiness when it is preached. Now it is not at all consistent for a child of God to fight any of the blessed truths that are taught in the Bible, or to refuse to follow any command that God has given. When a soul is won to Christ he will take Him as His Savior in the fullest sense, and will stand in Him alone, free from all straps and bands of sects, and sectarian principles. Yes glory to God, they will free themselves from babylon and the confusion thereof. Yours in love, sanctified wholly.

CONNECTION WITH CHRIST.

—o—

BLIND sectarians tell us that we must have some organized form in order to keep us together, and to keep us from backsliding. Praise God, we have more to keep us together, than the sects, creeds and worldly ties, that man can bring to bear upon the people. God is our keeper, and not man. God is our head; our salvation and our stay. The sects have chosen man for their head; and man has become an instrument in the hands of the devil, to make forms that are contrary to the will of God, and are thus leading thousands of souls to hell. They have man for the head; man for the body, and man for the members of the body; what have they got? They have a carnal institution operated, encouraged smoothed over by the powers of satan. God is left out of their forms until they have all things arranged to suit their worldly taste; Yet they call upon God to shower blessings down upon them; and if He would answer some of their requests they would really be surprised, for they ask merely through a form. They have the impudence to call these sects, the Church of God. Truly we have a long suffering and loving God to bear with such works. What has become of the Body of Christ? Has it become so inferior to that of man, that it has been rejected? Is not the salvation of Jesus Christ good enough? Why do so many misconstrue the Words of life everlasting, and how so many neglect so great a salvation? God the father made His Son Jesus Christ the head of the Church, and he is the head of the body, the Church; who is the beginning, the first born from the dead; that in all things he might have the pre-eminence. For it pleased the Father that in him all fulness dwell. Col — 1:18, 19.

We have Christ for our Head and Body, and we are members of His Body. Then if we are members of Christ, how can we be members of the U. B. or M. E. or any other sect or order that is not of God? Paul said: ‘‘Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them members of a harlot? God forbid. — 1 Cor. 6:14. But has not men of to-day taken upon themselves the things that belong to God? The parson in charge opens the door of his sect, and makes the young converts members of a harlot, thus dragging their souls down, to endless torment. But God is raising up a people clothed with while robes; and who are pure “even as He is pure” to worship Him in Spirit and truth; having washed in the blood of the Lamb, they can worship God in the beauty of holiness. We are framed in a great temple, and God is the builder and founder of this temple. In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto a holy temple in the Lord: in whom ye also are builded together for a habitation of God through the Spirit. — Eph. 2:21, 22. We are framed together, then builded together upon a sure foundation. “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid which is Jesus Christ”. — 1 Cor. 3:11. We being framed and built together by the Spirit of God. we become the temple of God. And when He enters, our hearts are filled with love and become knit together in one body, with Christ as our head. We are not knit together with sectarian creeds, forms, and class books; but “We are knit together in love,” — Col. 2:2. Does a child of God need any more than this, to keep him unspotted from the world? Are we not complete in Christ? Certainly we are if we have been washed in the blood of the Lamb, for to such is the promise of life everlasting. Then let us run with patience the race that is set before us.

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

—:o:—

VICTORY IN PA,

—:o:—

AFTER constant labors and travels for weeks we landed in this hill country of Pa., on the beautiful camp-ground, near Rockland Station Venango Co., about noon Aug. 23. The meeting began that evening with a very good congregation. Praise God! we were all fresh and well, with voices clear to shout His praises on the kill tops, and blow the trumpet on the holy mountains. O praise God for His wonderful goodness and mercy! How marvelous His preservation of our lives, our strength, and health, and above all our salvation. We had the happy privilege of meeting dear Bro. Clayton and companion, Bro’s. Evans and Koontz, fellow messengers of the Lord Jesus Christ. We were also happy to meet some dear saints we had met before, and a great many beloved ones in Christ Jesus we had never before seen in the flesh. O praise God! the glorious work is spreading quite well in this state. When here the last time three years ago, there was really only one Church of saints in the state; now there are little groups of martyrs for Christ in all directions. The work of salvation did not move so freely and easily as at other camp meetings, but the Lord put a great burden on our hearts for souls, and we went to work in determinate faith. Glory to God! hearts and wills began to yield, and about every meeting souls were delivered from the plagues of sin by the mighty power of God. No record was kept on earth, but there were probably about fifty souls saved. A number of believers were wholly sanctified, and all the saints much advanced in the Spirit. The attendance was good every day, and the large auditorium which seated a thousand people, was nearly filled in the night meetings. Doubtless three thousand people were in attendance on the Sabbath. To the credit of the people of that country, we must acknowledge that the order was the best we ever saw in our life at such a meeting. It was perfectly quiet during all the services, and the large crowd went from the ground night after night in beautiful decorum. There was general respect shown the cause on the part of all the unsaved, and many indeed manifested no small degree of interest in the good cause, and cheerfully done what they could to bear the burdens of the meeting, and showed no small kindness to the saints and ministers of Christ. The Lord bless and save them for His names sake. There were twelve happy saints that proved the blessedness of following Christ in the glorious ordinance of baptism. On Tuesday evening all the happy dwellers in the land of Beulah present, engaged in observing the sacred ordinances of washing one anothers feet, and the communion of the body of Christ, as commanded by Him whom we love. Out was very glorious to our souls, and Jesus the lowly Lamb of God was truly in the midst.

But one thing was lacking to make this one of the most pleasant and successful camp-meetings of this season, and that was the fewness of actual tenters on the ground. The saints there are young in experience, and seemed to have fool an idea that only people from a distance need to tent on the ground. A few good tents were there, and abundance of every thing was brought into camp. But many of the saints, one two and three miles away lodged in their homes, whereas they should have pitched their tents on the ground. I hope the Lord has chastized them enough about this matter, that they will not forget it by another year. The Lord bless His dear kind hearted saints in this country and multiply them greatly in Christ Jesus. Amen!

Having closed on Thursday evening, on Friday Ang. 31. dear saints took us over the Alleghenny River about fifteen miles to a grove that has been prepared a few years ago, on the land of a kind friend of the cause, by the name of Sutton. Here two large tents were pitched, and meetings were held until ever Sabbath Sept.. 2nd. A good many saints gathered from every direction, and the Lord wonderfully blessed His people, and our souls enjoyed a real feast of the rich things in the Kingdom of Heaven. … great deal of prejustice was removed from the minds of the people, many honest hearts received light, and we doubt act that much real good will result from the glorious Gospel of Christ that was listened to with much interest. There was a large crowd of people on the ground, and the order was good. Doubtless many souls would have been saved, had the meetings continued. But the harvest will yet be reaped in the future. After meeting Sabbath night we name home with the Hendersonville saints about ten miles, where we landed about 12 o’clock at night. Thank God for His marvelous grace that has kept us up during a long and constant series of meetings, and labors. We now take a few days rest, and then resume the great battle for the rescue of perishing sou’s. When we came to this state we thought we should remain long enough to hold about two meetings, but there are so many doors open, and such begging for the Gospel of Christ that we shall have to remain longer. But yet we feel the hand of God upon us to hasten as much as possible and return home, to do some work for Him with the pen. O that God would send more laborers into the vineyard to feed the hungry perishing souls, that are dying for the bread of life. “Go ye therefore in all the world and preach my Gospel to every creature.” O who will help to save the dying? what is done must be done soon. O Jesus send out the light and truth!

Sweetsfr, Ind,

Dearly Beloved Saints: — Grace mercy and peace be multiplied unto you through God the Father, and Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen! I pray God that ye may all stand perfect and complete in all the will of God, ever having perfect and constant victory over all things, through our Lord Jesus Christ. That ye may be fat and flourishing in the courts of His holiness unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ who is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy. Through the kindness of my heavenly Father I was privileged to attend the glorious Beaver Dam camp-meeting, which was a great feast of fat and glorious things to our souls. Hallelujah to Jesus! Truly He is able to do for us exceedingly above all we are able to think or ask. This meeting was indeed a glorious success, and the glory, love, and victory with and among God’s people was indeed wonderful. God bless the dear loving saints at Beaver Dam for their kindness toward the saints during that glorious heavenly feast. Daring this meeting I felt impressed of the Lord to go and labor for Him in Randolph Co. Accordingly about the close I went with the dear saints to Sweetser. where I held one meeting on the evening of Aug. 10th. The next morning took train for Deerfield, and on Subbath morning met with the dear saints at that place in Bro. Grow’s grove, where a large congregation had assembled to hear the Word of the Lord which had its effect on the people. In the afternoon it being rainy we met in Bro Grow’s barn where we had a precious salvation meeting. God convicted souls by the Word of life which we spake unto them by the Holy Ghost. Hallelujah! On giving the invitation four raised up for our prayers, and three came and const crated themselves unto the Lord and were blesed of Him by receiving the desires of their hearts.

During that week the Deerfield grove meeting commenced which was a glorious success. After its close we continued the meeting in Praise Chapel where souls were saved or sanctified in nearly every meeting. Hallelujah to Jesus the Captain of our salvation! On the evening of Aug. 26, we again met in the name of Jesus, where we had a glorious victory and success in the name of the Lord.

On giving the invitation, nine responded to the call and bowed at the altar. Bless the Lord for His willingness to accept and save all who turn unto Him with a whole heart. O praise His name for His love and mercy to the children of men! At this meeting satan tried hard to interrupt the meeting, but we rebuked him. and had the victory in the name of Jesus.

During my labors in that county before and after the grove-meeting, there were between twenty and twenty-five consecrations in all. Poor sinners who had never known the mercies of God were happily saved through His love. Backsliders were happily reclaimed, and believers wholly sanctified, and the Church much edified, united and built together in love and in the Spirit and bond of peace. The Church at New Pittsburg is now in a better condition than it has been for a year. We hope true humility and love will continue to abound more and more among the dear saints at that place. Then believers will be the more added to the Lord in spite of the devil.

On the evening of Aug. 26, we met and observed that precious ordinance of the Lord’s house, in which there were between forty and fifty saints participated. It was a solemn and precious time to our souls. O if all anti-ordinance fighters would only ground the weapons of their stubborn rebellion, and yield to the command of the most high God, then they would realize with us the happiness in doing the Lord’s will.

We bade the dear saints farewell and in company with Bro. Philip McFarland and Bro’s Hiram and William Fowler, we took train for Sweetser, to labor for the Lord. Let all the saints pray that we may accomplish much good for the Lord. Your humble and fully saved servant in Christ.

Any saints wishing to write fo us, please address us at Grand Junction Mich. from thence the mail will be forwarded to me at 0nce.

PIEDMONT, KAN.

Dear Brethren: — May the eternal God of all grace fill you with joy unspeakable and make you abound more and more in the love of Christ Jesus. May your faith grow exceedingly, and love and peace be multiplied unto you all. Amen!

We closed meeting at Piedmont the night of the 19th with good results and a wonderful victory in the name of Jesus Christ for holiness. O glory to Jesus for ever and ever! When we came there the people were very much prejudiced; they would have nothing to do with us in the beginning. Our faith was very much tried the first evening we were there, there was a very heavy storm came up blowing down the tabernacle and our small tent. The storm drove us some distance from the tent; the first of it was filled with dust, as it had been very dry for several weeks, so we did not get wet; while in the midst of the storm we looked to God for shelter and protection, and also to show us what to do and where to go; and the storm drove us to a small empty house where we camped that night (it being 8 o’clock p. m.) Then we went and hired the house for $1.00 per week, and was there two weeks. The next day we fixed up the tabernacle, for in blowing down there was a hole tore in it about ten feet long, which we mended very easy and was ready for meeting the next night; but the Republicans had a big rally and all the town was there, professors and all; this was Saturday night, then Sunday morning the wind blew the tabernacle down, breaking the center pole, and we began to feel as though the Lord did not want us there; so we concluded Monday we would box the tent and go somewhere else; so we asked the Lord what this meant, telling Him we felt He led us to come to Piedmont, and now if this was all we were ready to go or stay just as He willed about it.

On Sunday we were praying and singing the blessed songs of victory; the people gathered to hear us sing, there being seven of us; while singing the Holy Ghost got hold of their hearts and they wanted us to stay and preach to them. The constable told us if we would stay, they would splice the center pole, set up the tabernacle, and begged us to stay; we told them to go on, and they spliced the pole, and about twenty men, old and young, raised the tent. After they had it up they made up a collection, and bought three hundred feet of new rope, and put on new guy ropes and then made up fifty-five cents to buy oil. That night the tabernacle was well filled with men and women eager to hear the Word of God; so on every night we had large congregations; God most wonderfully worked upon the people’s hearts. Glory to Jesus! some yielded to the mandates of Jesus bowing themselves in obligation to a holy life; consecrated themselves to God, a living sacrifice and was sanctified wholly, while others were deeply convicted for salvation. One old Irish Catholic confessed it was the only way, and attended the meeting every night. People came to the meeting for fifteen miles, and many from eight to ten miles. The Holy fire was scattered for miles every way. God most wonderfully anointed us from time to tune to preach the Word with the Holy Ghost sent down from Heaven. Hallelujah!

Four were buried with Christ in the holy ordinances of baptism. Bro. Carey was ordained to the work of the Lord; he has formerly been a U. B. preacher, and they silenced him for preaching holiness.

He came out of the sect with all the sect in him; and came out on the line of come- outism, was a real come-outer fighting the sect and the commands of Jesus. When we turned the light on him he found he was not sanctified, and consecrated himself for all the will of God, and was filled with the Holy Ghost. Then when we showed him the light in reference to baptism, he wanted to hold on to pouring as baptism, and the Lord so convicted him that he could hardly wait till we could go to the water. God bless Bro. Carey and keep him low at Jesus feet. He is a wonderfully gifted man, and may God use him in the salvation of many souls.

There was a wonderful work done in and around Piedmont. Eternity will only tell the result of this meeting; and if we could have stayed two weeks longer I believe many more would have been saved. The people were very kind; they brought us all the provisions we could possibly use, paid our house rent, and gave us things out of the store and some money when we came away.

Monday morning we were preparing to start when they came to our house, about twenty unsaved men begging us to stay, while some, their eyes were filled with tears; we told them the circumstance of the meeting we had already advertised, and they bid us farewell; then some came back the second time. I want to say dear brethren in all my travels I have never met such kind people. May God bless and reward them for their kindness. They done every way to get us to stay, offering me a sum of money to stay one more week. I never will forget these dear people.

There is a large field there for holiness, and any of God’s ministers will find a welcome there. I am your free brother saved.

Albany, Ill.

Dear Saints: — We are impressed this morning by the Spirit of God to write up the effects of the two meetings held in Ill., beginning Aug. the 10, and continuing until the 26th. On the evening of Aug. the 9, Bro. J. and sister Mary Cole, sister McCormack, Bro’s. John Bryant, A. J. Kilpatrick and myself took train at Rochester, Ind., for Union Grove, Ill., near where the meeting was held in the name of the Lord. We were met at the station by Bro. Daniels two sons who came with teams to take us to their homes.

We began meeting in the School-house, the weather being to damp and cold to hold in the grove which bad been prepared for the meeting. We held all our meetings in the School-house except on Sunday, and we had continual victory in every meeting, also good order. There were a number of souls saved from all sin and sectism. The meeting closed Aug. 16, and on the 17, we were conveyed to Bro. Byers’ neighborhood, on whose farm we began meeting that evening in the name of the Lord. Bless the name of Jesus! He was with us in wonderful power during the entire meeting. We had two meetings each day, and the meeting continued ten days, during which time there were about twenty or twenty-five saved in God from all sin; also a number were healed by the laying on of hands in the name of the Lord. This meeting was one of the most profitable little meetings we have been in for some time. On Friday we went down to the Mississippi River where we witnessed the burial of eleven in the liquid grave; also on Saturday three more were buried with Christ, in babtism, making fourteen in all. On Saturday we met at 4 p. m., to observe the ordinances of God, and there were present about forty of the saints to commemorate the death of the Son of God. We left the saints in the aforesaid places in real working order. Dear father Byers said after be came up out of the water, “I am now ready for work.” May the goodness of God ever follow him in all his efforts to promote the cause or God. Amen!

Thank God, we can say that we are still in the love of God, and enabled to do His whole will.

Your sanctified brothers.

Hayesville, Ia.,

Dear Brethren: — We are happy to testify through the columns of the TRUMPET, that we are still saved and in the work of the Lord enlisting the pure that are able to stand.

We closed the Hayesville camp or grove meeting last night Sunday Sept. 2nd., with good success and interest manifested especially on the last day. In this place we found much false or sham holiness, but thank God a few who had the real fire in their souls were there. There were about twenty consecrations and four were buried with Christ in baptism on Sunday after the close of the afternoon meeting. We did not stay on the grounds to help in the meeting on Sunday night; to day we leave for Waco, Neb. to help in the camp-meeting commencing Sept. 5, and also Bro. and sister Cole who were assisting us in the meeting, leave for Windsor, Mo.

We ask the earnest prayers of all the dear saints of God that we keep the victory in our souls at all times. Amen Your Bro’s. in Christ, sanctified wholly.

Brushy Prairie, Ind., Dearly Beloved Saints, Greeting: — After the Randolph Co. meeting, companion and I in company with Bro. and sister Howard went to a place about three miles east of Auburn, where we opened fire on the enemies ranks in the name of Jehovah on the evening of Aug. 24. We remained there until Aug. 30. and dealt out the pure Word of God to the people. And the common people heard us gladly, and a few souls were saved, and others convinced of the truth. From there we came to Brushy Prairie, Ind., and met with the saints in those parts on the evening of Aug. 31, and we had a glorious meeting. God was with us in mighty power. From there we went to a place near Noble, Mich., where we held a meeting over the following Sunday, and thence back to this place and began a meeting at Mongo, a place about four miles from here. Our earnest prayer to God is, that many souls may be saved during this meeting.

All those desiring to write to us will please address us at Grand Junction, Mich., as that will be our permanent address in the future. Your brother saved in Jesus.

Dear Brethren: — I am saved and free in Jesus. Praise God for willing hearts to receive the Word of God in its fulness; but we find a great number of persons in these latter days who cannot stand the straight Word of God and yet they claim to be children of God. Christ says: He that is of God, heareth God’s Words. — Jno. 8:47. Oh! how true it is that “babylon is fallen, is fallen and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. — Rev. 18:2. May God help all the dear saints to pray for the deliverance of poor souls from the bondage of sectism for so many are kept in darkness by the false teaching of babylon priests. For we find in Isa. 56:10, 11. “His watchman (babylons) are blind, they are all ignorant; they are all dumb dogs; they cannot bark, sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber. Yet they are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand; they all look to their own way, every one for his gain from his quarter.” We find they worship their sect more than they do their God of heaven. We know this, because they will turn on you quicker if you say anything about sect babylon, than they would to hear the worthy name of Jesus Christ rejected. May God help all who claim to be saints of God to live straight and show forth a Bible salvation in their daily walk and conversation, that your light may so shine and sinners see that you are living for for Christ alone. Do you read your Bible and obey its great commands? or will you obey the sect teacher and the devil, and let them lead you down to hell, and thus be found wanting in that great day? Oh! now obey the Bible and take its teaching only, that you may be ready, and have on the wedding garment when the Savior comes to call His children home. Your Bro. saved though the precious blood of Jesus ready to do His bidding at all times.

Dear Saints: — I feel moved by the Spirit of God this morning to write to you, and to tell you that I am filled with the Holy Ghost and the power of God. While reading the 6th chapter of Mark for instruction, which I beg all readers of the Trumpet to read, for it may add strength to the readers as it did to my soul. This morning at family worship God seemed to open to me the windows of heaven, and let His Holy Spirit down upon me. I love to read His holy Word, it is the bread of life to believers. Thy Word have I hid in mine heart that I might not sin against the. — Psa. 119:11. I understand for myself that God is love and the Word is God. He that rejecteth me and receiveth not my Words lath one that judgeth him; the Word that I have spoken the same shall judge him in the last day: — Jno. 12. 48. Dear brethren in Christ I love to walk in His glorious light and liberty wherein the Son of God hath made me free to act and work in His cause. Like Elijah in the cave, sometimes I feel like a lone pilgrim simply because I stand alone in Christ Jesus free from all sects. But I am so glad that I can have correspondence with those who take God for their spiritual and bodily physician, for God tells us not to trust in man but the true and living God, and may the Lord God help all readers of the TRUMPET to read God’s Word and meditate on it and do His will, for He is a jealous God. We cannot serve two masters for God has chose

and separated us from the world and is able to take care of His own without any aid. Glory to His excellent name forever and ever! and by God’s assisting grace I mean to see what lies at the end of a praying life. Pray for me. Your brother saved and sanctified and made pure by the blood of Christ.

Nashville, Kan.,

Dear Saints of God: — My testimony is that the Lord does save to the uttermost both soul and body. Since my last letter I have felt the wonderful healing power of the Lord in my body by the curing of disease. It is wonderful; I was so low I could almost feel the cold waves of death sweeping over me; but the gracious God carried me back into a safe and sure place and my feet are stayed on Him. I am as well apparently as I have been for five years, but do not gain strength very fast this hot weather, and the enemy of souls uses that to buffet me and weaken my faith. But glory to God who giveth the victory, I am able to conquer every time through His name. A few days before I was at the worst, I was speaking to a friend of the reported healing of a young man in another part of the state, when the remark was made, “The day of miracles is past.” And afterward the good Lord used that as the basis of a promise to me in what seemed to me an audible voice; “They say that I can not heal you, but I will.” Now pray for me dear saints that my faith fail not, and that He will spare me yet a long time, if it is His will, that I may testify to His goodness in healing and saving me, and those that came unto Him believing. Pray also for the little Church at this place, that they may ever keep low at the feet of Jesus, where He can use them to His glory. Bro. J. M. Robinson baptized two, on June the ninth, and others are inquiring the way. We are praying the Lord of the harvest to send some of His fire baptized ministers here. Five or six sects have organizations here, but not a visible sign of salvation. Oh what a coming to judgment there will be soon, when the Lord, the righteous Judge shall appear. Your Bro. purified, made white and tried.

Dear Brethren: — My prayer is that God will keep us in the unity of the Spirit and love; and ever willing to bear with each other in the work of the Lord. Oh praise the Lord forever! I am still trusting my blessed Jesus for He is the Rock of my salvation. Glory be to God! He has promised to be my friend in every time of need, and He never leaves nor forsakes me. Glory to Jesus! when I become weary in faith I lean upon His breast and find sweet peace to my soul, that is far above the pleasures and foolishness of this world. The Word of God is true and by the assisting grace of God, I will stand the trials of this life, and by and by will go home to dwell with Jesus forevermore, where it will he all joy and peace around the dazzling Throne. O let us be careful how we talk to those who have just commenced to work in Father’s vineyard. If any have been overtaken in a fault, let us go to them in a spirit of meekness according to the Word of God, and having the love of God in our hearts, and go in the name of Jesus we can do much in restoring such ones. Christ died upon the cross to rescue the human family, not to save us in our sins, but, glory to God, to save us from our sins. Your sister saved, sanctified and redeemed by the blood of the Lamb.

St. James, Mo.

Dear Brethren: — I feel led of the Lord to speak again through the pages of the TRUMPET as a witness to the power of God in saving me from my sins, for which I give God all the glory. I feel so glad and thankful that God ever gave me a willing heart to accept the truth. I have been in this blessed way, which is the way of the Bible, for four years. And from this blessed Book the dear Lord has been teaching me. But during this time I passed through some dark rugged places spiritually, which after all proved to be good lessons for me, as all things work together for good to those who love the Lord. When I first started in this way, being fully persuaded that this was the only way of truth, it made me the more earnest to seek the Kingdom of God. The Lord knowing my heart, suffered several things to come upon me for some good and wise purpose. The Lord has delivered me out of them all, and He has taught me how to resist our wicked adversary, the devil. Steadfast in the faith for the God of all grace who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus after that we have suffered awhile, make us perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. I know by faith in the Word that I am a child of God, for I have confessed my sins to Him, and He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, and I believed the Word, and through the belief of the truth my sins are forgiven, and I am cleansed from all unrighteousness, and I am kept in perfect peace by His mighty power. Praise the Lord for faith that just takes God at His Word! I take the grace of God for my all sufficiency for both soul and body. He has promised to save us from our sins, and Himself took our infirmities and bare our sicknesses. O I have such a wonderful Savior who is able to do so much for me!

I am decided to obey God and live up to all the light He gives me. Pray for me that I may prove true to the end. Your sister free in Jesus.

Dear Brethren: — I feel to rejoice this morning to know that I am saved by the power of God. I am glad that I ever found out the ways of the Lord for it brings peace and joy that the world knows nothing of. It pays to serve the Lord for He gives us the victory over this world. I am justified and I ask all the prayers of the saints that I may be sanctified through and through. From your brother in Christ.

Scipio, Ind,

Dear Saints: — I do praise God this morning that I am saved and kept by His mighty power, and am ever looking unto Jesus. For twenty years I belonged to the sect, and now I can look back and see what a wretched condition I was in; I was stumbling along trying to get saved some way, I did not know how, I was a stranger to salvation; but I do thank God that I can see the abominaton of the sects; and I am so thankful that I am free from babylon. I now live for God alone regardless of what any one may say; I am dead to this world and all else but God.

If the Lord is willing, will some of the dear brethren come to this place and preach the straight Word? I do thank God for my salvation, and for the privilege! I had of attending the saints meeting at Beaver Dam, Ind. I am saved just now and kept by the mighty power of God, sanctified wholly, ever ready to do His will.

Scipio, Ind.

Dear Saints: — May the very God of love and peace keep your hearts and minds till His coming. Glory to God! I am saved from all sin through the truth, and sanctified wholly through the precious blood of Jesus my loving Savior. I feel the fire burning in my soul while I write. Hallelujah to the Lamb of God forever and ever! There are some honest souls here who would be glad to hear the straight Word preached. Some are out of babylon, but babylon is not out of them, for they follow after the fashions of the world and are not valiant for the truth. Wife and I are the only ones near here who are out on the sea of glass mingled with fire, and on the blood and fire line for God.

Now if any of the saints feel led to come to this place, we would be very glad, and will care for them the best we can; for we realize all we have belongs to the Lord, and it is free to the saints. We are saved from all sin, and from every thing that is not of God. Hallelujah to God and the Lamb forever and ever. Amen!

To ALL THE DEAR SAINTS, GREETING: — I am happy to tell you through the Trumpet that I am rejoicing in the fulness of His grace. I wish to say that song of mine which you will find on the first page of the September 1st paper has one mistake in the first verse; the fourth and fifth lines are not set right. The fourth should be the fifth and the fifth should be the fourth. I came too late to correct it before the first side of the paper was printed. I hope to remain in Mich. for some time; pray for me. Pawnee City, Neb.

Dear Brother: — Your favor of the 17, inst. is received, and contents noted. In reply I would say that I have severed all connection with the Baptist denomination, (or church as it is called.) My reasons for so doing are simply the following. I was converted in the Reformed denomination many years ago; then I commenced reading the Bible, and took it for my guide; and by studying it I found that I could not obey Christ and remain in that sect. So I left it and united with the Baptist church (sect) and was buried with Christ by baptism; and I still take God’s Word for my guide, which makes it my duty to sever my connection with the Baptist sect as well as with all other sects. Doing the will of my Father in Heaven constitutes me a child of His, and a brother of Jesus Christ and all God’s children; and an heir of God, and a joint heir with Christ and all His followers. It makes me one with Christ and all that are one with Him. It makes me a member of the Church which constitutes the body of Christ, whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life. I ask, is not this enough? do I need anything more to admit me to the fellowship of God’s saints? There is no need of belonging to any sect pen to be a child of God; but it is all wrong, for these pens keep God’s children divided. I believe that God has some children in all these sect pens, though few they may be in some of them. Christ prayed that His people might all be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are. I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me. — John. 17:21-23.

“That the world may know that thou hast sent me.” O, how can the world know when God’s people (or sheep) are fenced off in so many different pens, and all speak different and do different and believe different, when Christ says there shall be one fold. Is the body of Christ divided? the Church is His body — Eph. 1:22, 32. No, Christ is not divided, and neither is His Church or body. But these sect pens are all human organizations, and are no part of the body of Christ. Then I ask again, why should I belong to any of them? God is calling out of these different pens. Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighiy. — 2 Cor. 6:14-18. Then God wants His people to be a separate people from the world; and be of one mind and of one heart. Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisons among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. — 1 Cor. 1:10. Christ teaches this oneness all through the New Testament, and the apostles leach it, and why should God’s people be otherwise. We are commanded to love one another; do the sects love one another? No, some of them hate each other, and consequently are murderers. And ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. — 1 John 3:15. If we love one another God dwelleth in us and His love is perfected in us. Christ said, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. — John 14:23 Again, “Love not the world neither the things that are in the world; if any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eye, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. How is it with the so called churches of to-day? are they not going hand in hand with the world? Worldly socials, festivals, concerts, society meetings, and a number of different games are indulged in. All these have taken the place of the spiritual meetings of former years. I well remember when the world had to get up their own parties and frolics, and the church members had nothing to do with them; but now it is different. The church members get up the parties under the name of religious social festivals, concerts, etc., and invite the world to come and join them and have a good time together; and for what? to make money to support a hireling ministry, and impure gospel, a form of godliness without the power, fine and costly buildings called churches, elaborately dressed choirs who in many cases make no profession of religion, and who go through with a cold performance which is as much in harmony with spiritual worship as an opera or theatre. Go into such a church, and with few exceptions you can not distinguish the communicants from the ball and theatre going people. Bishop Foster truly said, “The extent to which this is now carried on is appalling. The spiritual death it carries in its train will only he known when the millions it has swept into hell stand before the judgment.” Know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. — James. 4:4.

Church members have their idols, and think more of them than they do of the God who created them. They have secret societies for their mutual benefit, in which they trust, instead of trusting God, and giving Him their whole heart. Even the preachers belong to them, and try to justify themselves by saying they are charitable institutions. They are gotten up by man, consequently of the world, and not of the Father. Jesus said, “No servant can serve two masters. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God. — Lake 16:15.

I thank God that I have found a salvation that saves me from all such works of the devil; I have no thirsting for worldly pleasure, for I find all the pleasure in Jesus that I want.

I was member of a secret society and God showed me the abomination of it. I was also a user of tobacco for over forty years, and when I asked God to help me, He instantly took away all appetite for tobacco. Glory to God! in less than a week it was nauseating to me to smell a man’s breath that used it. Himself took our infirmities and bare our sicknesses. — Matt. 8:17. It affords me much pleasure to do the will of my heavenly Father, when I have the blessed assurance that I walk every day and every hour, yes and every moment to please Him. O, what glory fills my soul continually to know that I am walking in the light even as He is in the light, and have fellowship with the saints, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth me from all sin. Glory to God forever and ever! I have no more use for any sect pen, for I am free. Christ has made me free. Hallelujah! I have made a full consecration to God of myself my time and my all; everything is on the altar, and the altar sanctifies the gift. — Matt. 23:19. I have put on the new man, which alter God is created in righteousness and true holiness. — Eph. 4:24. “For both he that sanctifieth and they that are sanctified are all of one; for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren.” Christ is my brother and God is my Father. I shall not want. Praise the Lord!

Dear brother McConnell, I ask in the name of the Lord Jesus that you read this letter to the Baptist church at Pawnee City, or cause it to be done, so that all may know where I stand; after which please hand it to the editor of the Pawnee Press for publication. Yours in Jesus.

WAITING UPON THE LORD.

—:o:—

“BUT they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

This sublime language is found in Isa. 40:31. The Lord in these verses recalls our attention to the source of our strength: “for once have I spoken, yea twice, that power belongeth unto God.” “The glory of the young men is their strength. But even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young man shall utterly fall.” How utterly powerless are the strongest, independent of God, to save themselves or work efficiently for God, “without taking hold of His strength.” A good swimmer can save a drowning man after he ceases his struggles. A sinner struggling in the quicksand and miry clay of the horrible pit of sin is saved when he realizes his lost condition and cries to God, “just as I am without one plea” Our strength unfits us for taking hold; “when I am weak then I am strong.” Our extremity is God’s opportunity, and the end of all our resources; “He giveth power to the faint, and to them that have no might he encreaseth strength.”

Now we will examine and see what the Lord means by waiting. The first verse of the next chapter (Isa, 41) coutinues the subject. “Keep silence before me, O islands, and let the people renew their strength: let them come near; then let them speak: let us come near together to judgment.” Here we see the Lord uses the word “silence before him” as the condition for drawing near and increasing their strength. O this blessed holy stillness! so holy, so calm and still is my rest in the depth of His will. “Be silent O all flesh before the Lord, for He is raised up out of His holy habitation.” Now we turn to Psa. 37:7. Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him: fret not thyself, etc. In the margin we read, “be silent to the Lord.” Oh what a babel of spiritual unrest the eyes of the Lord of Sabaoth coninually beholds. The wicked are like a troubled sea continually casting up mire and dirt, which cannot rest. Isa. says, “The effect of righteousness shall be quietness and assurance forever.” But “no we will flee on horses,” going to run away from the Lord, but He arrests them. In the previous verses He says, “But their strength is to sit still.”

But our subject applies more particularly to those who need to have their spiritual strength renewed; hence the exhortation, “fret not thyself.” We are naturally like an animal unaccustomed to the yoke, and so we fret, and when our Maser chastises us we are apt to chafe. “I was so dumb I was as a beast before thee.” Like a willing but ignorant employee, we run to do the work of the Master without waiting to get a clear understanding of the work and the employers will. “Wait I say on the Lord.” Oh for men who will go aside in the quiet places like Paul in Arabia, until their soul becomes filled with God; they then come forth baptized messengers to preach like living flames of fire, the salvation of the Son of God. This silent waiting makes manifest any lack in the soul. The foolishness of man perverteth his way, and his soul fretteth against the Lord. To much whimpering and murmuring under the chastening rod; to much talking back to God and defending our own righteousness. Be silent to the Lord; commit thy way unto Him. Let Him finish His own work, be passive in His hands; let the potter handle his own clay. God allows various providences to try His people, and chasten them. Perhaps some holy person points out some lack, then people fret; but I say it is not man, it is the Lord who judges me. Do not be too sure that every providence is by His direct or permissive will; and when they come we should say, “It is the Lord, let Him do as seemeth Him good.” Bow our leads, take sides against ourselves for God. “Thou art righteous but unto us belongeth confusion of faces.” When your husband fails you and your relatives despise you, or the saints judge you, then it is good to say with the prophet, “Therefore I will look unto the Lord, I will wait for the God of my salvation; my God will hear me. Rejoice not against me, Oh mine enemy! when I fall I shall arise, when I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a light unto me. I will hear the indignation of the Lord because I have sinned against him, until He plead my cause and execute judgment for me; He will bring me forth to the light, and I shall behold

His righteousness. He will bring forth our righteousness as the light and our judgment as the noon-day. Then she that is mine enemy shall see it and shame shall cover her, which said unto me where is the Lord thy God.”

Oh for more men who will wait on God! saints that will go with Jesus to Calvary. Men that will give their cheeks to the smiters, and withhold not their face from shame and spitting, but commit themselves to Him that judgeth righteously. “The Lord is good to them that wait for Him, to the soul that seeketh Him, it is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.” “It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth, he sitteth alone and keepeth silence because he hath borne it upon him. He doth not afflict willingly to crush under him the prisoners of the earth.”

“Why should a mortal man complain at trials in this wicked world? Nay let us thank God’s holy name for all His love o’er us unfurled.”

After the chastening then comes rest, sweet rest, power with God: our strength lost, God’s gained, self dethroned, Christ reigning.

Waiting on the Lord is sweet, sweet for workers tired in mind and nerves. “Come aside into the desert place and rest awhile,” said the Savior. Waiting till the flood gates fill up with new supplies of God’s grace, then to be poured out with an irresistible force, that moves every thing before it. Dew falls on still nights, “the dew shall rest all night upon his branch.” So the grace of God falls on the heart that waits in silence and holy repose before Him.

Dear Saints of the Living God: — Grace and peace be multiplied unto you. This morning finds me saved and satisfied. Praise the Lord, oh my soul! God is filling this temple with glory from above. The Word says: “They are not of the world even as I am not of the world;” that is they are not of the ungodly, and those who love not the truth, who have pleasure in unrighteousness and do not the truth. We I bless God, the world knows me not. Praise God, I have a discerner, and am walking in the light of God’s Word. The Spirit tells me to preach the whole truth, which I expect to do by His assisting grace. I am saved from all babylon and sin. Dear saints pray for me, for I need your prayers; the will of the Lord be done.

It has been only about a year since I started in this glorious cause, and I do bless God for what He has done for my family and myself during that time. Praise God I feel this morning that I am walking in the light, as He is in the light.

Yours in Christ.

Dear Saints of God: — I feel led by the Spirit of God to write my testimony for the glory of God. I want to say that I know better than enything else that I am one of the little ones of Christ, that has chosen this way to follow Him. I was converted and sanctified the 27, of last December, in one of Bro. Haner’s meetings. Praise the Lord for salvation full and free! I am drinking at the well of salvation that never runs dry. His Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my pathway, glory to His holy name! I just realize that Christ is the solid Rock, all other is sinking sand. Your free brother in Christ.

Dear Saints: — My testimony this morning is that I am saved with an everlasting salvation that keeps me walking in the light of Jesus every day. Glory to God for His precious promises to the children of men. O I praise God for the love I feel in my heart for Jesus and all the redeemed. O it’s glory in my soul to know that I am kept by the mighty power of God, from all sin, living and walking with Jesus each hour and moment. He is keeping me pure and white glory to His holy name! I am an old lady sixty-six years old, I lived in the Baptist sect twenty years trying to serve God, but He has called my companion and I from them. Glory to Jesus for ever and ever! a year ago last fall the Lord sent brother and sister Drowley here to teach the straight Word and there were quite a number came out for the Lord. Pray for us that we may be pure and spotless through life that we may enter through the pearly gates into the city. My prayer is that God may bless and keep you all. From your sister under the blood.

Dear Brethren: — Oh how glad I am that I can say before God and all men, that the Lord has shown me the true light of the Gospel, and that I am now walking in that light. O, praise His name forevermore! He has called me from the dark path of sin and set my feet upon the Rock that shall stand, and put a new song in my mouth, even praises unto our God.

“Thou art my portion, O Lord! I have said that. I would keep thy words. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. I hate vain thoughts, but thy law do I love. Thou art my hiding place and my shield; I hope in thy word. Depart from me ye evil doers, for I will keep the commandments of my God. Uphold me according unto thy word that I may live, and let me not be ashamed of my hope.” Praise the Lord O my soul!

The Lord has shown wonderful kindness unto me, in sending His servants to proclaim the truth to a people who stood in darkness. This glorious plan of salvation is given unto those who will come and accept according to the Gospel. Dear friends He has saved me from all sin and made me a new creature in Christ Jesus.

There were some of the brethren sent by God to Pleasant Grove about six miles from our home. I found they taught God’s Word, and that I bad not given myself fully to do His will, and that I could not say that I was saved; I saw Eternity before me, and knew that time was short; therefore I gave myself to God to use me as He saw best; and as I did this I was wonderfully blessed. I praise God that some are receiving the light and are happy in Jesus. Yet as I look around me I see poor souls in darkness and sin, and we are nearing the grave, and where shall we all spend Eternity? in Heaven or Hell? The people about here have not heard the true Gospel preached, and my prayer is continually to God that He may open the way that they may see the light and be saved. Well I can say that I am saved through the blood of Jesus, and I ask the prayers of all God’s children that I may be ever ready to do His will. Your sister in the love of Christ.

Dear Brethren: — May God bless you all for Jesus’ sake. Amen! Well I am praising God this morning for full and free salvation, and for redemption through the blood of Jesus. Well I can say to the glory of God that I never had in all my life such a settling down as I have had since the assembly meeting in Gratiot Co. Mich. May God bless Bro. Warner and company and brother Speck for the awful ford that they preached to the people. Bless God! it done me good; I saw where I was. Well it will be to the glory of God to tell that I have an experience that I never had before in my life. I can say that I have been redeemed and wholly sanctified to do His will when He makes it known to me. Pray for us. Your saved brother and sister.

William & Mary Flegel.
