CAST YOUR CARE ON JESUS.

_____

Cast your care on Jesus, trust Him now:
Stay your mind upon Him, humbly bow:
He will surely keep you to the end,
Praying, “Let my will with Thine over blend”.

Chorus. — Cast your care on Jesus,
Cast your care on Jesus,
Cast your care on Jesus,
For He cares for you.

Cast your care on Jesus, just believe:
Do not doubt His promise, you’ll receive,
He will never leave you, trust Him here,
He will surely keep you, do not fear.

Cast your care on Jesus, never yield:
When you’re weak take up the sword and shield,
Do not fail to conquer; obey and trust, —
Walking as the Bible says you must.

Cast your care on Jesus, suffer long;
Let your heart in heaven’s grace be strong,
Let your sorrows cease: and sigh no more:
Soon we’ll reach that happy peaceful shore.

Cast your on Jesus, soon we’ll be —
From all toil and pain forever free,
Where parting, sin and death can never come,
In that bright eternal, blissful home.

Importunity.

_____

A sermon taken by a reporter.

I FEEL that the Lord would have us to deliver a little message on importunity. Pray God that he will enable us all to understand it, for it is one of the great secrets of success in a Christian life. We turn to Isa. 62:6, 7. — “I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night; ye that make mention of the Lord, keep not silence, and give him no rest, till he establish, and till he make Jerusalem a praise in the earth.” Here God declares that he has set judges upon the walls of Zion, who shall not hold their peace day nor night. They are to incessantly preach the gospel, and give the people no rest. And while they are engaged in constant preaching they are also to engage in constant prayer; for the text says, “Give him no rest.” The antecedent of Him here is God; give God no rest until he make Jerusalem a praise in the earth. Give God no rest; what is implied in that? Why it simply means to keep bothering him with your prayers until he answers. If nobody prayed any more than some men do, God would have a great deal of rest, for some people don’t disturb God’s rest very much with their prayers. Now the commandment demands of us, that we be importunate. You know what importunate means, don’t you? It means continuous asking. It means to ask and ask, and ask, and ask, and ask, and ask, and keep on asking, and give God no rest till he answers. “Well,” says one, “I didn’t know we had to do that way.” Well, perhaps that is the reason God wants me to deliver this lesson this morning. Yes, my brethren, God wants you all to learn the lesson of importunity: for there are many of you too negligent, you haven’t got spiritual continuity though. A great many of you if you desire something of God will ask lazily, and if it doesn’t come you will be somewhat like a balky horse, push back, quit, and then conclude that the whole thing is in the hands of God. But brethren, you are mistaken. Sometimes you have to carry requests through a long season of difficulties before they reach the hands of God. “Well,” says one, “I didn’t know that the telegraph line from here to heaven was attended by so many difficulties.” Well, that is just why you do not have better victory than you have. You thought it was easier to get messages through than it actually is. “Well,” says one, “I have often got answers instantaneously.” Yes, so have I. God has even fulfilled this promise to me, “It shall come to pass, before you call I will hear, and while you are yet speaking I will answer you.” But he doesn’t do that every time. He makes me dig awhile sometimes, and he wants you to, and if you don’t do deep and continuous and thorough digging, you will have a great many dry wells.

Now I am going to show you one of the commandments of the New Testament, that some of you have not learned to obey, as yet, as you should. Eph. 5:17. — “Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.” Here God positively commands us to understand his will. But my brethren, how many times have you made petitions to God and received no answer at all? You have called on the elders when you were sick; perhaps you have been anointed; they have prayed for you; you have prayed for yourself, and you got no answer at all. Haven’t you had such experiences? Yes, you have, brethren, some of you. God answered nothing, neither by stretching forth his hand to heal, nor by the Spirit witnessing in your heart. In a day or two you threw the whole petition overboard, concluding that it was not God’s will to heal you, but you did not know for sure. God didn’t tell you it was not his will to heal you, and lazily you ceased to pray. Brethren, you did wrong. God commands you to give him no rest until you know his will. “Be not unwise,” says the commandment, “but understanding what the will of the Lord is.” It is your privilege, my beloved, to know God’s will concerning everything that pertains to your salvation and to your personal interests. When you offer a petition and receive no answer, it is your duty to ask again and again and again, until the answer is received.

But can we prove by the Bible that importunity is necessary? Let us see. I turn now to the 18th chap, of Luke and the first eight verses: “And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: and there was a widow in the city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. And he would not for awhile: but afterward he said within himself. Though I fear not God, nor regard man; yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith. And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? I tell you he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh shall he find faith on the earth?”

Now we have before us a parable. All the parables of Christ teach us a lesson, and what is the lesson intended to be gathered from this one? The first verse tells us it was spoken to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint. In the parable a certain widow went to a certain ruler to have a certain man arrested, an enemy of hers who had wronged her in some way. He gave her no law, but she was not easily discouraged. She brought her case into court again and asked a second time for the arrest of that wretch. The judge refused the second time, and she brought her case the third time. He refused again, then she brought her case the fourth time. He refused to give her law again, and again, and again. But she still kept bringing her case into court. Finally the judge concluded that though he neither feared God nor man, for his own personal interests, and for the sake of a little peace he had better have the man arrested and get rid of the woman. So he avenged her of her adversary. What moved the judge to do it? Continuous asking. She was determined she was going to have all the law upon it, and she did’t receive a denial. She asked again and again and again and again, and finally to get rid of her the judge had her adversary punished. Now remember this parable is to teach us to always pray and not to faint. We can get no lesson from it except the lesson of importunity; the lesson of repeating our petitions to God until he answers either affirmatively or negatively. Then after Christ told the parable he says, “Hear what the unjust judge saith.” Well what did the unjust judge say? He says, “I will avenge her, lest her continual coming here weary me.” Christ wanted us to learn a special lesson from that saying of the judge. This is the lesson he wanted us to learn: “And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him; though he bear long with them?” Mark, it is those who cry day and night unto him who get the answers. Now God teaches here clearly that we don’t get answers to our prayers every time when we have offered the prayer the first time. God withholds the answers sometimes for awhile to sink us deeper into humility, to develop our faith, and to test our importunity. And m such cases if we do not continue to repeat our petitions we will not get an answer at all.

Now I turn to Luke 11:5-10 — “And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves; for a friend of mine in his journey is come unto me, and I have nothing to set before him? And he from within shall answer and say, trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give as many as he needeth. And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh, findeth; and to him that knocketh, it shall be opened.”

Now we have a lesson here just like that we have read in the 18th chapter. This time it was a man who wanted to borrow three loaves of bread of his friend at a late hour at night. It was midnight. He asked his friend to arise and lend him three loaves. “No,” says his friend, ”my children are in bed with me, it is late and everything is quiet; the door is locked and I can’t get you any bread to night. Come down in the morning (doubtless he said); it is so late, if I arise I shall awake the children, and they will set up a cry. I cannot give you any bread at this late hour.” “But please do,” says his friend on the outside. “A friend of mine in lis journey stopped with me this evening and I am out of bread. I have no bread for his breakfast and le must be off at an early hour. I shall not have time to bake biscuits, and I will not have time to run clear over here before breakfast. It will delay him in his start on his journey. Please get up and lend me three loaves.” “No,” says the man within, “it is late, I can’t get up. You come over in the morning. You should have come sooner.” And who knows how many such excuses he would have for not arising and giving him bread. But the friend knew no denials. He did not accept such answers. “Please arise,” he said, “give me three loaves. O please do.” How did it finally end? Listen! 8th verse says: “I say unto you, Though he will not arise and give him because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.” Friendship would not raise that fellow, but importunity would. For the sake of rest, and to get rid of him, he arose and got him his bread. Now what is the lesson to be learned from this? Simply this, that if we continuously cry to God in our prayers, he will finally answer. Right here, brethren, is a great key to success. Many of of you have been defeated by the devil, simply because you did not drive your petitions with repetitions to the throne of God. Listen! 9th and 10th verses show us the lesson to be learned in this parable. I read: “And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.” Here is the lesson of this parable. How many quote this promise with very little understanding of its depth! What did Jesus mean in this place where he says, “Ask, and ye shall receive.” Many think he meant simply to say, “Lord, give it to me,” that is all. But the context shows that it meant to ask and ask, and ask importunately, and if you keep on asking you will finally receive. That is what he meant. For he preceded this promise with just such a lesson of importunity.

TESTIMONIES.

“Thy Testimonies are Wonderful.” – Psa. 119:129.

Woodburn, Ore.

Dear Saints: I can say from my heart that I am completely hid away in Christ, from all cares of this life, soaring over the world, flesh and the devil, justified freely, after that sanctified wholly by a definite second work of grace wrought in my soul by the Holy Ghost. I am healed and kept by the power of God, ever praising God for salvation full and free, and trusting Jesus for all things and in every hour of trouble.

Your brother sanctified and kept,

Dear Saints: I feel it my duty to send in my testimony. I praise the Lord for salvation which makes me free, and praise him for his prayer that not only the disciples should be sanctified, but he prayed for them also which should believe on him through their word. I praise the dear Lord for sending Brother and Sister Randolph here last Spring to preach the Word to us. I gave all to the Lord and now I am his, saved and sanctified in the blood of the Lamb. Pray for me, and my wife, who is yet in the sect.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: I am still praising the blessed Lord for saving me from all the sins of this world, and also for the healing power. He has healed me, soul and body. Praise his dear name! I was raised in the M. E. sect and was taught that the Lord did not heal the body, but that he only forgives sins; but praise his name, he has healed me of liver complaint and also of the dropsy, of which the doctors said that I never could be cured. I am not afraid to trust him for my physician. I hope that the Lord will send some of his ministers to the Soldiers’ Home at this place. There are none of the saints here but my husband and myself. Your sister, sanctified and kept by God’s power,

Dear Readers of the Trumpet: I am saved this morning and kept from all sin, and the Lord has healed me time after time, and the Lord has healed my family from bodily afflictions. I can not praise the Lord enough. Glory to God forever! The Lord took the use of tobacco away from me, that I had been a slave to for over nineteen years. The worst of all, I was a drunkard. The Lord took the appetite of strong drink away, and by the grace of God I expect to stand firm for the Lord forever and ever. I would not give one hour of this blessed salvation for all the time I served Satan. The Lord is my physician for soul and boby. Glory to God forever! Dear saints of God, pray for our family. Dear Saints of God: I can say that I am saved unto the uttermost, and kept by the power of God; who has brought me out of all worldliness and sectism, into the glorious light and liberty of the gospel, and has made me free indeed. Bless his holy name! He is leading me and teaching me daily, and I am walking in the light as fast as he leads me out. I know he is able to do all that he has promised. I had never heard of the evening light, until this summer. I went to visit my son, near Elwood, Ind. who had come out of everything that was not of God, and had been made a new man in Christ Jesus, and was living a godly life right along, every day and hour with his family, that were following in his footsteps. I watched them closely, to see if their life corresponded with their profession, but could find no fault in them at all. I could see that they lived a different life from what I did then. But I knew there was a holier life to live, but now I was living a cold formal life; but after I had seen how wonderfully God was dealing with his people, I felt that I must have all that God was willing to give me. I sought and found peace to my soul. Glory to God! It was a severe trial to give up all and do my first works over again; but glory to God who giveth us the victory, I am all the Lord’s now, and the life I now live I live by faith of the Son of God. I am alone in this city so far as I know; but if there are any saints in this city or surrounding country, I do want to hear from them or what is better still, see them and talk with them. I want every saint that reads these words to pray for my unsaved husband and children, and for myself that I may live so that by my example many may believe and be saved, for my whole desire is to live for the honor and glory of God and the upbuilding of his kingdom. Amen.

A Saturday worshipper writes that, “It Christ had changed the day he would have made it so plain that a child or even a fool would have understood it.”

We answer that it is so plain that a child or a fool can easily understand it; but of course a subverted heretic, an idolatrous law keeper cannot do so, because they are all blinded by the god of this world, and the latter have the veil over their face while they continue to read Moses. “Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord the veil shall be taken away.”

THE GOSPEL ARK

_____

Is now anchored at Hazel, O. Bro. Mast writes us that holiness is a new thing to the most of the people there. But a good interest is taken. Large attendance, and many acknowledge the truth.

It is justice to Bro. L. C. Mast a rift consecrated crew on board the Ark to say to the dear brethren, especially in Pennsylvania and Ohio, that $100.00 is needed to put the craft in condition to occupy in winter. Now since the brother has invested $800 00 in this good boat, and has involved himself and left the comforts of a pleasant home, for the cause of Christ, is it not, dearly beloved, reasonable and just that some brother, or a few together, just supply the small amount needed to make the family comfortable? Surely God will move some dear saved soul thus to show the love of God. Amen.

__________

THE PAPER FOLDER.

_____

In the issue of Aug. 22 we presented to the dear readers of the TRUMPET a little sketch of how God’s work was increasing and moving forward and also about the need of a Paper Folder. We promised to give you a statement the 15th of Oct. of the amount of money sent in towards the purchase of this machine. One hundred and ninety-four of the TRUMPET readers have responded to this call, and the amount sent is $297 84. We now extend our thanks to these dear ones for their kind offerings, and pray that God may bless and richly reward them.

We have not yet sufficent means to make the purchase, but we are earnestly calling upon God to supply the needed amount and we believe he will do it. It will cost between $500 and $1ooo to buy a machine that will do all of our work. We now have on hand enough tracts and books, that are printed and not folded, to make a stack of paper 150 feet high, and more are being printed each week. Several hands are kept busy folding all the time, but are not able to fold them as fast as they are printed.

Many of the readers would be glad to know something about the amount of work done here, so we will give you a few items that will give you some idea of it. We now have about forty persons in the family and all are giving their service free. Within the last year we have printed 1,670 615 tracts, books and papers on our large press, and 449 740 sheets of paper have been printed on cur job press. During this length of time we have paid out for paper alone $2,957.57, and our postage bill has reached the amount of $1244.40. From this you can see that thousands of papers, tracts, etc. have gone forth over this land to cheer the hearts of j honest souls, and to feed those who1 are starving for spirit ual food. Each week these publications find their way into new localities, and many poor souls are reading the pure gospel for the first time. The circulation of this amount of literature brings many letters of inquiry, requests, testimonies, etc. Within the past eleven months we have received over 21,000 letters, and many of these we have had to answer. With the increase of the work our office has become too small, so we are now building a two-story addition, and Bro. G. B. Collins and others are busy at work laying the foundation. This will take a few hundred dollars besides our regular expenses, but knowing that we are in God’s order and what we are doing is only to glorify his, name, we believe that he will supply all things. We would be glad to buy the Paper Folder by the time the building is completed.

__________

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY MEETING.

_____

This annual convocation was a very precious and profitable occasion. Quite a goodly number of dear saints came from Indiana, Illinois, and from various localities in this state. Very deep and thorough gospel plowing was done, and much follow ground turned up. The battle cry from heaven was, “Speak unto the children of Israel that they go forward.” To such as lingered in the wilderness, the holy land was set forth, and they were earnestly admonished to take their inheritance in Christ. Many were sanctified wholly. Backsliders and sinners were restored and pardoned. And no doubt every saint of God realized a glorious advance down in the sweet valley of humility and self abandonment, and far up on the mountain of spiritual knowledge, faith, power, and victory. Glory to Jesus! Truly a real increase of God is manifest in his holy people. But from the standpoint whereunto we have already attained, we see wonderful heights of glory and divinity yet rising up before us. O praise the living God! Behind us lies the the dark, deep, doleful region, of the apostasy, while before us looms up the “blessed.” Dan. 12:12. It occurred to our minds what a sad shade it would cast over our minds if the word of God revealed before us a coming declension, and the spoiling again of God s beautiful Zion. How such an unwelcome anticipation would necessarily weigh against cur zeal. To think that the cause we are laboring hard to build up must pass under the dark shades of sin and confusion. Oh praise God for this fact, — the apostasy is past. But just such a state of things stood before the eyes of the apostles and primitive Christians. But with all that they labored faithfully and laid down their lives freely for the cause of Christ. Should we not much more devote ourselves to the work of building the house that was builded these many years ago, which a great king of Israel — Jesus Christ — builded and set up? See the type of our work, Ezra 5:11. Seeing indeed this glorious church of the living God shall never again be marred, defiled or broken down, but shall stand forever, Bro. Cole said, “This is the only reformation that is destined to go through to the end of time, because it is a revival of the whole truth.” Amen.

Ministers present: J. Cole, Sheldon, Merrit, Collins, Rosenbery, Tufts, Palmer, Fidler, Michels, Nauta, Philips. Jas. Kriebd, and Sisters Fink and Fry.

The Lord stretched forth his Hand to heal the sick.

Bro. Jas. Kriebel and Sister Della Fry were ordained with fasting and prayer and the laying on of hands, to the ministry.

Dear Bro. Wm. Nauta of McBride, Mich., a Hollander by birth, is called to go to his native country to publish the glorious gospel of Christ. Through the kindness of a consecrated sister the Lord opened the way for him by providing the means, and he expects to go on his way soon. Let all the saints of God pray for his safe arrival, and extensive usefulness. The Lord bless him abundantly, and make him wise to win his countrymen to Christ.

A few souls were buried with Christ in baptism. We also enjoyed a very sacred and holy communion service with the blessed Master, in his divine memorial ordinances. It was very glorious. How sweet and heavenly to see the long row of dear saved children on each side of the house joyfully following their Master in these holy ordinances! Thank God for a saved school! Thank God for the fellowship of his saints. Amen.

ROMISH AND PROTESTANT UNITY.

_____

Special to Chicago Record.

St. Paul. Minn., Oct. 6. — Archbishop Ireland’s rosary Sunday sermon at the cathedral to day was a plea for reunited Christendom.

“A divided Christianity is a weakening of forces, a terrible misfortune, a plain contradiction of the gospel. It is evident beyond all possibility of doubt that all Christians should be one. It is the duty of all who love Christ and his truth to desire and work for unity. It is well, then, that the work for unity be spoken by the old church — the mother church. The road to unity is through sweetness and charity. Wherever Christ is loved and worshiped there good is done. In this age of agnosticism and unbelief let us salute in brotherly love all who call Jesus their Savior. The bells of any Christian temple calling men to worship God and the Savior bring sweet music to my soul, although again, as I must in obedience to the gospel, I cry out: ‘One Lord, one faith, one baptism.”

Here again we see the drifts of the two beasts to gather into the image of the first beast. Time was when Rome declared all sects dissenting from them as cast off and lost. But now, the old mother gathers all her corrupt daughters into her lap, and encircles them within her arms of Christianity. And all the bells of Protestantism, formerly hated by the old mother, now “bring sweet music to her soul.”

A Rev. John Rusk has in the city of Chicago, recently organized a new worldly concern called the Church Militant, which excited quite an extensive interest. Rusk, the head of the new institution, says, “It and the Church Triumphant should be one.” But God’s Church Militant on earth is one and the same with the Church Triumphant on earth and in heaven. In this new broad- gage, “Creed is to be a secondary matter in this church. Jews, Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics are to work side by side, and it is said that the aid of the atheist will not be scorned, nor will an infidel receive less help than a Christian.”

Mr. Rusk’s lieutenants in the various lines of work the church will undertake are as follows; namely, eight different wings of work are provided with as many officers. There is in the organization a corps of twenty-five lawyers to attend to the legal interest of the body. And a corps of twenty-five physicians. A very different institution this is from the one Christ gave us.

study, preparatory to labor in the vineyard of the Lord. A few days ago our heart was stirred very much with the duty of making an effort in this direction. Last Lord’s day we confessed our convictions, and a general impression has since then rested on the hearts of many of the brethren here that we ought to make a beginning of some kind. We have had a consultation before the Lord, and find all of one mind. And so we are safe in saying something will be done in this good work.

Dear Bro. Michels informs us that the Home building is full, so that we are unable to extend an invitation for pupils from abroad at present. There is, however an upper chamber to the home which is not finished, which, if completed, could be occupied for the little boys’ sleeping quarters, leaving rooms vacant for about twelve students. But several dollars are needed to purchase lime and lath, and if the Lord leads a few who wish the benefit of the thorough Bible drilling, to assume this little expense, and also furnish their rooms, and more if able, this good work could, in this manner, be extended.

But we feel it right to say that no person will be allowed in the school but such as are thoroughly consecrated to God, dead to sin. utterly dead to “youthful lusts,” and whose life in Christ is established and blameless. The Lord will need about three teachers, who will divide the work into,

1st. Bible history and perhaps archeology.

2d. The critical study of the New Testament, and lectures on prophesy.

3d. Experimental and spiritual truth. It is also hoped that music and elocution will be added.

We are not prepared to say how much time can be devoted. But it is possible the recitations will be confined to the nights, or early in the morning. This will allow such as wish to attend the regular day school, or labor part of the time to do so:

What we have said about this matter is to enlist the prayers of all God’s people. The will of the Lord be done.

__________

THE PRAYER OF FAITH.

_____

Grant Junction, Mich.

God is on the forward move with his church, and wants us all to move in line with himself, as “workers together with him.” And yet there is a great lack in many of praying the real prayer of faith that takes God at his word and receives the answer according to promise. “What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.” — Mark 11:24. Let all honest souls use what faith they have in praying the prayer of faith, and make it a real business, and God will increase your faith to use for his glory. Not only pray for yourself, but also for the real advancement of God’s cause, and especially for God’s ministers, that God speedily bring them up to the New Testament standard, in all its fullness and glory. Amen.

I would say to those who are in deep earnest and praying the prayer of faith to the best of your knowledge and ability and still need a few words of help on that line, and especially if you mean by the help of God to be a life-time faith worker for God, and the Lord so leads, you may send us a few lines plainly? written, with your address in full, so that we can assist you by our prayers and by private letter or in “TRUMPET” if necessary. And to all who are living near enough to the Lord to be fully agreed with him, and with those who are agreed with him in faith, will you in the name of Jesus and on the line of God’s truth join with us in praying for all the needy ones, and especially for all who are praying for the needy ones daily. Amen. Your brother in the advance move for God, agreed with all who are agreed with God for all that is for God’s glory.

Keep The Unity.

_____

“AGAINST an elder receive not an accusation,” but before two or three witnesses. — 1 Tim. 5:19.

Dear brethren, the time has come that we as children of light must keep on the whole armor, and steadfastly resist the devil and give him no place. He is a cunning and wily old foe and is constantly seeking some way to attack God’s people. One of his strongest holds, and best ways to hinder the work is to wedge in between God’s people and cause them to lose confidence in each other, and cause a misunderstanding to arise and thereby cause a division, or break the unity which the Word demands. “Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind, and in the same judgement. 1 Cor. 1:10. It means much, dear ones, to be perfectly joined together, and the devil knows very well that if he can only succeed in getting a little misunderstanding among us or a little lack of real confidence, that it will break the real unity of the Spirit and therefore hinder the work of God. In many places where I have been I have found that the devil has taken little things and misrepresented them and caused a real split or division in the congregation. Brethren, this ought not to be. When you feel that the enemy is trying to cause division or accuse one of the brethren to you, resist him at once, and should you feel that a brother or sister has taken a misstep or needed an admonition, go to such a one at once in the spirit of love and meekness before the enemy magnifies the thing and causes you to distrust or lose confidence in the brother. Sometimes the thing which seems so great in our eyes may not be so great after all, or while some one may have done something which we would call a great sin, may not have been done willfully. The devil is doing all he can to rob God’s people of this blessed heavenly unity; and oh how many times he tries to get between brethren and sisters by bringing up every little thing he can and then misrepresenting it, and trying to get us to lose confidence on each other and condemning each other. God help us all to be on our watch in this line as never before.

But especially I would speak a few words of warning to all God’s ministers. Brethren, God demands us as his watchmen to see eye to eye; but just as long as the devil can keep 11s censuring, mistrusting, doubting each other, and just as long as he can get us to pick up or receive every little thing that is brought against each other, just so long he will succeed in causing a lack of confidence and real unity. Now I speak from experience, and fully believe that all of God’s ministers have had more or less experience on the same line. It seems that the devil is doing his very best to hinder this reformation, and is doing all he can to cause a feeling of distrust or lack of confidence between God’s ministers. As I have traveled some I have found in many places where I have been a few that were filled with a real picking, faultfinding spirit, and were telling what this and that one had been doing, and generally have something to say about God’s ministers that had been there before. They sometimes approach us with, “What do you think of a minister that does so and so,” or “what do you think of a preacher that preaches so and so?” or, “Bro. — does this and that, and if possible they will get us to give our decision against the brother or condemn him with only hear-say, then if the devil can succeed in getting us to receive the accusation and in our hearts and minds condemning him, he will next get us to insinuate or condemn him from the pulpit. Oh may God help us, dear ones, to be wise on this line. While it is true that we are to condemn every thing that God’s wore condemns, and reject every one that God rejects or does not walk in harmony with the Word, it is also a fact that we are to judge righteous (or right) judgement, and it is surely very wrong and a very unmanly thing for us to judge or condemn from hear-say or appearances. In the first place we are not to take up a reproach against our neighbor, much less one of God’s ministers. Second, we are not t0 imagine evil against our brother. Zech. 7:10. Again as we read in Timothy we must not receive an accusation against an elder, but before two or three witnesses. And then should we take their witness and condemn before giving him a fair trial? Certainly not. When an accusation is brought against a brother, no matter how great the evidence, it is our duty to fully understand both sides before we pass judgement. We are to hear both sides before we can judge; we are to hear “the smallest as well as the great.”

Now there was a time when the devil got me to take a look through his glasses, not at myself, but at all of God’s ministers, and as sure as I write these words I could see defects and mistakes in every one, and like Elijah I was made to cry out, “I only am left to escape;” and the enemy tried to make me believe that I was about the only one that was right, and then I began to feel the weight of the whole church of God coming down on me, and it nearly crushed the life out of me before I awoke and rebuked the devil; and behold, when I got shed of the devil’s glasses I found that the things I thought I saw in my brethren were only specks and spots on the glasses. Thank God for deliverance, and the precious lesson. And now I haven’t time to listen to what the devil or his agents have to say against my brethren. God has given me grace enough, so that when I feel that a brother or sister needs an admonition, to give it in the fear and love of God. May God help us to do our duty, and be true and loyal to God and each other, and rebuke and resist the devil on every hand, and give him no place, and I pray God to move out every thing that would tend to cause any lack of confidence, or break off unity or perfect fellowship, which binds, knits and compacts all our hearts in the pure fervent love of God, that there may be no breaks in our ranks, but that this glorious reformation may leap forward as never before.

Brethren you have my earnest prayers and sympathy and co-labor, and with Jesus as our great Commander I am with you, heart and soul. Let us be true to each other, let us as never before be more humble and submissive to each other, and let us pray God to increase the holy burning love of God in 0ur hearts for each other, and forever shut our hearts to all the whisperings of the devil. Let us all keep in our place, and do what God gives us to do, and commit each other to God, and let him do all the dictating, and command his own army. Yours to the end of the battle,

W. J. Henry.

News from the Field

__________

Hebbardsville, O., Oct. 10.

Dear Saints: Since our last report we have been learning some precious lessons from God and have been used for the salvation of souls. When we arrived here again we found all the dear ones anxious for meeting, and we began in the grove near Peach Ridge school house, three miles north of Athens. Several souls made their escape, and six were buried with Christ in baptism, one of whom was my dear old grand father, who had been a leader in Babylon for forty or fifty years. But when the light of God’s word shone he walked in the light and left Babylon mourning their loss. We expect to begin meeting on Sand Ridge soon, and are still looking for the Lord to send us a co-worker for the winter. Father starts back to Nebraska to-morrow, and we are much in need of some one filled with fire to help in this work here. Pray earnestly that God may use us to his glory.

Your saved brother in the one body,

E. G. Masters.

South Chicago, Ill., Oct. 12.

Dear Saints of God: We came to South Chicago about the 24th of last month; found the work not prospering as it should, some of the little ones had gotten their eyes off from God, and on one another, and have lost salvation by so doing. But praise God, some are standing true to God and some are coming back to the fold again. We have large crowds at the street meetings, but not very large congregations at the house. Dear saints, pray much for us here that God may save many souls. And I want you to especially pray for me that there may be a way opened for us to move to the children’s home. I have a young team that I will have to sell before I can move. They are coming four years old next spring, and I offer the team, harness and wagon, for one hundred and ten dollars. I expect, the Lord willing, to remain in the field working for lost souls. Any one desiring our help can write us at Teegarden, Ind. Pray that God may keep us saved and in his order all the time.

Your saved and sanctified brother and sister,

S. P. and M. J. Strang.

Dearly Beloved Saints: I am happy to testify that I am saved and kept by Christ alone. Praise his name! After leaving Pierce, Neb. we came to Albion, Neb. where we had a precious meeting. The Lord has a few there who do not bow the knee to Baal. From there we came to Loop Co., found a few precious souls saved through Bro Randolph’s labors. From there came with Bro. Randolph to the Thompson C. M. It was a precious meeting to our souls, and from there to the Philipsburg camp meeting which was also a precious meeting. Many souls were saved, the country much stirred up for miles around; many came from a great distance to hear the pure gospel, and received the desire of their heart. We are now holding meeting four miles east of Stockton. The Lord is with us; some have humbled themselves and have been saved. Expect to remain here as long as the Lord wills. We are seeking deeper humility and meekness. We ask the prayers of all the saints of the living God that we may gain the desired end.

Yours in the one body and one faith of the gospel,

Wm. N. and S. J. Smith.

Dear Saints of God: The camp meeting in this city ended yesterday with victory for the Lord. It has seen a real melting time to myself, and I believe that I can speak for all the saints that are here likewise. Many have been justified and sanctified wholly, and many have proved the Lord mighty to deliver from bodily affections. Some have had their sight restored, others have received their hearing, and others have seen healed from various diseases through the name of Jesus. Truly my heart has been filled with the heavenly glory, and my eyes have been made to realize more than ever the grandeur of the reformation which the God of hosts has commenced among the nations. This meeting has been a very precious season for God’s remnant here in this place. Last Lord’s day the ordinances of the Lord’s house were observed, in which about seventy-five saints partook. It made our heart to rejoice to again meet our dearly beloved Bro’s Byrum, Daugherty, and Byers, and also to meet and make some new acquaintances among God’s holy messengers. Pray much for the work on the Pacific Coast, and that the Lord will send out more laborers into this part of the harvest field.

Your brother saved, sanctified, and separated unto the gospel,

Ludolf Schroeder.

Dear Brethren and Friends: From the Woodburn camp meeting we moved to the city of Salem, set up the tabernacle in the north part of the city, and began meeting Aug. 30 in His name, which lasted about ten days with good effect on the people. Dear Bro. Byers was with us in this meeting, whom the Lord also used in preaching the Word. He left us on the 9th for Roseburg, which left wife and me all alone with Jesus. The tent was then moved to South Salem where we continued about ten days, closing with victory. The attendance was small in both meetings, owing to scores of people having left the city for the hop fields. About eight or nine in all professed justification, whom we pray may be kept free and go on unto perfection in holiness. Two were healed by faith in His name, one of these was a Mrs. King, who had her hand bruised and badly poisoned in the hop fields. Now her whole family is saved in Christ. God bless the friends who so kindly administered to our wants. From there we returned to Woodburn and tarried with the church over Sabbath, Sept. 29. Had a precious and profitable time. One was saved in Jesus, and one healed. We are now holding meetings at Latourell Falls.

Yours saved to the uttermost,

Dear Saints of God: We are glad to report victory on the Lord’s side. We left Fresno, Cal. July 1, and got to this place Aug. 13, after a long hard trip, a distance of about one thousand miles. But the Lord was with us. The people here were anxious for a meeting. So we put up the tent and commenced in the name of the Lord. Dear Bro’s Byrum and Daugherty came through on their way south just in time, to preach the first time in the tabernacle, which was highly appreciated by all that heard them. We were sorry they could not stay longer but they felt the need of pressing on. So we continued to hold forth the pure word of God. And victory was on the Lord’s side from beginning to end. This was a new field where the pure word of God had never been preached. And many of the people seemed hungry for the truth. Several consecrated for the second work of grace, and we have good reasons to believe they obtained it. There were fifteen renounced sectism and came out in the pure light of God. Seven followed the Lord in baptism, and nineteen participated in the other ordinances. When the tabernacle meeting closed the saints rented a hall and still have their meeting three times a week, and the Lord is blessing their laborers. We had dear Bro. Byers with us during the last week of the meeting, and he was wonderfully used in preaching the Word and setting forth divine healing, and several were healed during the last week of the meeting. We are now holding forth the pure Word at Looking Glass Valley, a small place about ten miles from Roseburg. This is a new place for the evening light. Our P. O. will be this winter, Roseburg, Ore. Oh dear ones, pray much for us and the work here in Oregon. Yours set in defence of the gospel.

Faith and Works.

__________

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration and the renewing of the Holy Ghost.” Two works of grace. Titus 3:5. Praise our God who has forgiven our sins and sanctifies us by his own precious blood, and healeth all our diseases! He has healed wife and I of La-grippe, and restored our little girl to health when she bad spasms. And when she was hurt, he removed the pain, and keeps us in health, so that we can boldly say the Lord is my shield; of whom shall I be afraid? James says, What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?” We often hear people praying for God to bless the Trumpet family,” and not allow any clogs on the gospel wagon; and yet take two or three or more papers such as “Guide to Holiness.” I believe the Bible is all the guide to holiness weneed, in fact the only true guide there is; for you look in those papers and you find Rev. attached to the names of the writers and worldly advertisements. One of them was an advertisement for baking powder. That is a poor guide to holiness.

Now brethren let us lay aside every weight and do all for his glory. How can we pay one and two dollars a year for Babylon literature, when we can get the TRUMPET for one dollar a year, and when it is weighed in the balance it is not found wanting? “If a brother or sister be naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body, what doth it profit? Even so faith without works is dead.” Jas. 2:1-7. So when we give one dollar for the TRUMPET and three dollars for Babylon literature we are pulling down more than we are building up When God saved my soul and brought me out of Babylon he shewed me it was man made machinery, and as I was paying $10.50 a year for newspapers I said to wife, “I will stop three papers, as I haven’t time to read the Bible and them,” and the Bible seemed a new and interesting book. But by and by I neglected the Bible for the daily newspaper; and I heard a small voice say, “Stop your paper,” but did not think it was the Lord (like Samuel was when he was a child, I did not know his voice). Then darkness gathered around and I asked God earnestly what was wrong; and he said just as though someone had whispered to me, “Stop your paper,” and for nearly two years I have not paid a nickel of God’s consecrated means for any worldly papers or books. I believe that more should be said on this line, that Satan may be defeated and that we all come together in the unity of the faith. Eph. 4:13. Now while I was paying $10 50 for worldly papers I was only paying ninety cents for one little paper that I thought was religious, and that one caused me to lose twenty-two dollars through an advertisement for rooms at the World’s Fair. Hoping some one will be helped by reading these few lines, I leave it with you, asking God’s blessings upon it. Yours in Him,

A. F. Adams.

__________

Part of a Letter on Insurance.

_____

Dear Brother: In answer to your letter, would say, the whole tenor of the word of God is against a child of God having his life insured in a worldly company, to secure his family against want.

First, the Word says, Be not unequally yoked together with unbelievers.” 2 Cor. 6:14. This text forbids membership in a sect or secret order; and equally forbids joining into a partnership or any mutual standing arrangement with sinners, so as to be in compact with them for worldly ends. Every scripture which teaches us to trust in God for all things we need in life virtually forbids us to trust an Insurance Co. and pay the Lord’s money into the same continually, to insure our families against want. God says, “I will be a father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters.” In this relation he assumes the responsibility of caring for us, feeding and clothing us and ours.

And he places himself under the same obligations by promise. “Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” — Matt. 6:30-34. This word of the Lord is directly against your insurance policy. It takes thought for the future, what your family shall eat, etc., after you are dead and gone. In this you do as the world who know not God, as the Gentiles — sinners — who seek after these things. But our Father knoweth that we have need of these things. We have a better Father than sinners have; hence we need not seek after what they do. It is written, “In everything by prayer and supplication, make your requests known unto God.” And, “Our God will supply all your needs.” And is he not also the God of the widow and fatherless? Now to join an Insurance Co. to guard against want in your family is practical unbelief of those precious words. It dishonors God before the whole world, and virtually says, his promises cannot be relied upon. It is going to Egypt for help, instead of the Lord. In effect it says that a company of sinners can be trusted with the future wants of your family better than our heavenly Father. “He that giveth to the poor lendeth to the Lord.” “Give, and it shall be given to you again, good measure.” But the insurance policy says, “It is not safe to trust in the Lord, and put your spare means into his treasure; he may not repay when under future wants. Better pay it into the hands of sinners, then you are sure to get it out again.”

If it is wrong to take thought for the morrow, is it not more so to take thought for the time to come after you are dead? God wants us to live for him in the present moment; do with our might what cur hands find to do to day, and trust God for the morrow. “Trust in the Lord and dwell in the land — holiness — and verily thou shalt be fed.”

The insurance business is against the principles of a holy life unto God, because it is binding yourself for life under an agreement to pay continually from year to year, either a certain amount or as assessments demand. So it puts the Lord’s means under bonds to the world. We are acquainted with one unsaved friend who carried policies in two companies. In the course of a number of years paid out perhaps not less than a thousand dollars. Finally one company or society broke up, and after awhile his assessments in the other company became so frequent and heavy he got tired of carrying it and throwed it up; and so all those hard earnings of years were lost. Better lay up all your spare money in the one old and only reliable Insurance Co., the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. His capital, the universe, his faithfulness unto the clouds; his policy, “All things are yours,” and, “No good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.” Amen.

It is true we must labor faithfully with our bands in our several callings. But with all that, “God giveth the increase,” and it is of his bounty that we are fed.

It is also true that we must more or less deal with sinners, but we need not join ourselves to them nor be yoked up with them. Therefore, “seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these — earthly — things shall be added unto you.” Amen.

  3. AGAINST ACCIDENT AND SICKNESS. — Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flyeth by day; nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
