NO RESPECTER OF PERSONS.

_____

A sinner once to Jesus came,
Pressed down with fear, with guilt, and shame;
Although he was by sin depraved.
He gave up till, and now is saved.

Cho. — Jesus will do – – the same for thee – –
Bass: Jesus will do                      the mine for thee.
He’ll break your bands – – and set you free,
He’ll break your bands          and set you free.
And give you per – – feet liberty.
And give you perfect liberty.
Oh come, and pardoned be.

One time a wayward son did roam
From father’s love, from friends and home;
When he returned, a ragged slave,
His father all the past forgave.

There’s many have we known appealed
To Christ by faith, and have been healed
Of all afflictions and all pain,
When earthly help they’ve sought in vain.

Then sinner, come, just as thou art,
Repent of sin, give God your heart:
A river, then, of peace will flow,
I’ve proved it, and I’ve found it so.

__________

SPIRITUAL ADVANCEMENT.

_____

MUCH is being said about spiritual advancement, in this last dispensation of time, and its great need is to be seen on every hand. Many are desiring apostolic faith, and this can only be attained to by first having an apostolic consecration, which fully measures to the New Testament standard. Jesus says. Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my savings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: he is like a man which built a house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it; for it was founded upon a rock. Luke 6:47, 48. So according to the Word, DEEP digging is absolutely necessary to reach the rock.

When we have the conscious evidence within our souls, that our consecrations have reached the deepest depths until there is no lower depths that we are capable of consecrating to, in compliance with the gospel, when we have done our utmost, how quickly God responds with a faith that reaches up through the mighty Word, into heaven, and back again into our souls. And when we live true to such a consecration moment by moment, and hour by hour, an unwavering faith is INFALLIBLY THE RESULT. And yet how small a thing contrary to the will of God will destroy the divine union of the soul with God, until the faith cannot cling to the promises recorded in his precious Word. Oh dear ones, when no veil of displeasure hides the smiling face of Jesus from our spiritual view, faith is always the result. Praise the dear name of Jesus! Jesus says, “Be ye perfect even as your Father in heaven is perfect;” and we are commanded to be holy as he is holy. This means much more than many of his professed followers realize. We read in Isaiah, I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded. I have raised him up in righteousness, and I will direct all his ways: he shall build my city, and he shall let go my captives, not for price nor reward, saith the Lord of hosts. Isa. 45:12, 13.

So God has pledged himself to direct a man in all his ways. This scripture may not only be applied to our going and coming, but also to every outward action of our lives; for in a wholly sanctified state, every act, thought, and look must be holy. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth; for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall … … and he will shew you … … ..e. St. Jno. 16:13.

And the truth teaches perfection in holiness. Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and justly and unblameable we behaved ourselves among you that believe: as ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children, that ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory. 1 Thess. 2:10-12.

Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless. 2 Pet. 3:14.

Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy. Jude 24.

Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed. 1 Sam. 2:3.

Evil imaginations and thoughts are forbidden. And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart. Zech. 7:10.

For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. 2 Cor. 10:4, 5.

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Phil. 4:7, 8.

Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established. Prov. 16:3.

We read in God’s word, also, that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man. Col. 4:5, 6.

But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strife. 2 Tim. 2:23.

Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God. Psa. 50:23.

Thou hast proved mine heart, thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast tried me, and shalt find nothing: I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress. Psa. 17:3.

The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed and lie down, and none shall make them afraid. Zeph. 3:13.

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil. Eccl. 1-2:13, 14.

May the dear Lord bless all his dear children and enable them to walk in all the truth. I am happy to report sweet heavenly victory in my soul, and now have a deeper experience into God, than I have ever known before. To God be all the glory and praise forevermore! My soul is basking in a heavenly rest and deep unwavering faith in the precious promises. I have learned some precious lessons in the furnace, but count all joy for Christ’s sake; for all has proven a glorious benefit. In the advance movement it may seem like an ineh-to-inch fight with the enemy; but in God’s word we read, There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. 1 Cor. 10:13. Yours humbly in Jesus, saved and sanctified,

Birdie E. Fink.

__________

RESPECT OF PERSONS.

_____

The Word says that we are coworkers together with God. Now when we as his children go to work we must work just as God works, and as his word tells us. Now God’s word tells us not to have respect of persons, and if we do we commit sin. Jas. 2:1, 9. How many ways we can have respect of persons! The Word teaches us to be doers of the word and not hearers only. Now in some cases it may be that the workers in God’s vineyard neglect their duty on this line.

Now the case may be that some of the saints have been blessed in this world’s goods more than others, and some may give more to a preacher than others, and supply all they need and sometimes more than they really need, and at the same time some of the poor around home are not paid any attention to. Lev. 19:5. And I have seen some preachers who would show respect of persons in this way. Because some professed saint would give a great deal of his means and time, he would take that person’s word quicker than any body else, and at the same time the person trying to pass through on his liberality. Brethren, this ought not so to be. Deut. 1:17. 16:19. It is not good to have respect of persons in anyway. Prov. 24:23.

And sometimes it has been the case that a brother preacher would come to a place and have his family with him and hold meetings, and the brethren would pay all of their attention to the preacher, and finally get married to the preacher and worship him and not God. And the same case with the sisters; they will go to meeting and every one coming in the meeting house run and greet the preacher’s wife; and at the same time some of the saints at, home sitting by, but they are not noticed. And some of the sisters will pay all their attention to woman and not to God. This is respect of persons. The Lord had no respect of persons. Mat. 22:16. Bless the Lord, he left us an example that we should follow his steps. Sometimes it has been the case that any poor person making a misstep would be noticed a great deal quicker than some one that has plenty. And the poor would be admonished at once and brought up to time, as some call it, and the one that does the admonishing will boast about it, and say when they are in company with some one or in a crowd, “I straightened this one, or that one, and brag about it. This is not the right spirit. And then some one that has plenty and always has a freewill offering slide along on his or her good deeds. Brethren, is this not the case ? If so, let us move out of the old ruts and get on solid ground. And let all of us that profess to be saints have on the wedding garment and get married to the Lord first and not to man. Then the Lord will not lead us to have respect of persons.

How many ways that we can show respect of persons, and how many ways we could offend some one, in having respect of persons! We can offend some one. Read Mat. 18:6. Now we know that some of God’s children are more spiritual than others and some are weaker, and we should be very careful and not lay a stumbling-block in showing respect of persons, and cause some one to backslide. It is the duty of all of God’s children when they see some one weak or discouraged, to deal with them in love and kindness and show a hand to lift up and try to get them up higher on the walls of Zion. Bless the Lord!

Now beloved, we know that there is nothing done in word or deed but what God knows all about it. We all know that it is the duty of all saints to examine ourselves, and when we hear what God says about respect of persons, and our conscience smites us, let us get down and pray God to remove all guilt. Beloved saints of the Most High God, God’s word is just a way built from earth to glory, and there is a crown awaiting for us there. But in order to receive a crown we must obey God. By the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established. Whosoever shall keep the whole law and yet offend in one point he is guilty of all. Jas. 2:10. Now we see that if we obey God in every way, yet offend by having respect of persons we commit sin, and become transgressors. May God help us to obey in all points.

I believe it will glorify God to write my testimony. It has been about five years since God for Christ’s sake forgave my sins, and afterward sanctified my soul. I do praise God for bringing me unto the light of the gospel. Glory to God for the sweet peace and joy that still flows in my heart like a stream of water springing up unto everlasting life! Praise his dear name for his healing power! Mal. 4. 2. Your brother saved in the one body,

Geo. W. Myers.

Dear Saints of God: The Lord still keeps me saved by his mighty power. I realize as never before that it so sweet to trust Jesus for all things. I have been going through some very trying times lately, but praise God, I know we are to be purified made white and tried; and the more trials the more glory of God in our hearts. The Lord healed my little girl and boy. O praise God for his wonderful goodness to his children! I am earnestly asking God to open the way for me to send my children to the saints’ school this winter. It makes my heart ache to send them to the schools in this wicked place. My husband has wandered away from God. I ask you all to pray that he may return, and pray that I may ever stand firm for God. Your sister all on the altar,

Laura Pickett.

_____

St James, Mo.

Dear Saints of God: This evening finds me still saved and enjoying salvation. O how I do praise God that he ever shewed me this way. I find that there is so much to thank God for. We have a little band at the Matlock school house that is all on fire for God. We meet every Thursday night and Sunday and sing and pray together and the work is moving along. Will say to all of the dear saints who are aiming to come to the Vichy camp meeting to begin at once to ask God to give us a wonderful harvest of souls, and if you have any straightening up to do, do not wait till camp meeting to get straight, but begin at once and ask God to give you a clean heart, then when camp meeting time comes on you will be ready to go to work in the vineyard of the Lord for the salvation of other souls. Your brother in Christ, saved and sanctified,

T. A. Miles.

Dear Saints of God: I feel led of the Spirit to testify that I am one among the little ones. I feel so free and happy. I can say what I never could before, The whole beautiful good will of the Lord be done. I commenced, seeking heart purity about two years ago, and it took just that long for me to come to the point where I could say, the whole will of the Lord be done, and give up all for him. My family was the hardest thing to give up but I was held under the power of God until I submitted. Praise his dear name! I am wholly consecrated to his will. I am completely dead to the world and its amusements and alive to God. I am in his hands to be used in any way he seesfit. He has me a pure and clean heart, and is given healing my body. I have been afflicted eight years with female trouble; I have been treated by different physicians with but little or no relief, and have taken so many kinds of patent medicine and was always reading advertisements in papers for female trouble, thinking I could find something to help me. About a year ago I quit taking medicine and commenced trusting in the Lord for health and strength and he has touched me with his healing power. When I feel the symptoms of my old disease coming back I go to God in prayer and fasting and he sends the healing balm and takes them all away. Oh praise his dear name! I am so glad I have found the great Physician. It was in Bro. Keeling’s and Bro. Moore’s meetings that I laid hold of the faith and claimed the promise. Praise his dear name for sending them here, and hope the Lord will soon see fit to send them back to this place again, as there are a few honest hearts ready to receive the true word of God. Your sister in Christ,

Lucy Marshall.

There will be a camp meeting held by the saints of the church of the living God five miles east of Hartsells, Morgan Co., Ala., beginning Aug. 8, and continuing over the 18th, and longer if the Lord leads. Preparations will be made for camping on the grounds, and for cooking and eating. However it will be expected of those who can, to bring provisions and those who are able to help care for themselves and others, as it will not be a place of leisure and feasting the body, but of labor to save the perishing, and feasting the soul on the good things of God. Those who are poor and unable to bring provisions or provide for themselves will be gladly cared for. All who can should be sure to bring bedding, and if you cannot bring provisions, and you are able, bring a contribution to cast into the Lord’s treasury and help to bear the burden of the meeting. Let there be a general gathering of the saints in the South at this meeting. Cannot the dear saints from eastern Tennesee and Kentucky attend this meeting, also from Mississippi? Hartsells, on the L. & N. R. R. is the nearest station. Provisions to meet you there will be made. Let all truth seekers and hungry souls who desire salvation come to this meeting and hear the pure gospel and get salvation. We will announce who will assist in preaching at this meeting, as soon as we can. An able minister of the New Testament whom God has qualified with an understanding of prophecy will be much needed to help in this meeting. For any particulars inquire of Mr. R. G. Sharp, Hartsells, Ala. Let us all pray earnestly for this meeting. Your saved brother,

Otto Bolds,

Directions for coming to the D wight, and Bliss meetings, etc., also to other camp meetings, should be published immediately. Do not neglect this, brethren.

By suggestions of brethren at St. Louis, Mich., a slight change has been made in the time of the meeting there, and at Bliss; in order to avoid closing the former on Lord’s day.

Bro. M. H. Long, Auburn, Neb. requests that any one desiring a tent at the Auburn camp meeting, write to him at once, so he will know how many tents to order.

DEAR SAINTS, BEAR WITH US.

_____

During Bro. Byrum’s absence a larger portion of the mail than usual is necessarily sent over to our place. And here we are expected to make a tour north to camp meeting at Dwight, Bliss. St. Louis and Grand Rapids, before which time, we have all we can possibly do in tract work, to furnish the press with matter that the Lord would have go forth as soon as possible. We have written a small tract on the ‘‘Evening Light,” and revised the “Marriage and Divorce” tract, since our return from Ohio, and are engaged in a revision of the “Millennium” tract. We had expected to abridge it, as our large work on the Sanctuary will thoroughly cover all points relating to that subject. But we find it the will of God we should make it more complete, by the addition of a few chapters that are very essential to the full understanding of the matter. The work we began last spring on “Salvation,” we must by all means complete before we leave home. So, dearly beloved, if we cannot answer all your letters, that indeed ought to be answered, please bear with us. We feel our calling is to write for the thousards rather than for the eyes of one. But how greatly we love to hear from you personally, and answer personally. We will do all in our power; but to furnish the tract matter needed some letters must go unanswered. Oh, beloved, pray God to help us.

THE CHILDREN’S HOME.

It is just and right that we should say a few words at this time about this institution. It is evidently the case that many of God’s children came to the camp meeting with some of the Lord’s means with them with the intention of helping this work. They were asked for thirty-one dollars to pay interest then clue on the home land, and fifty dollars was promptly handed in, all of which was applied on the land. After that the missions in Chicago and Milwaukee were quite liberally aided. Dear Bro. Michels felt it his duty to present the financial condition and needs of the home, but a favorable opportunity not having presented itself, it was never done. Doubtless many deposited in the treasury box with a view to help the home. Some we have been told so remarked. But the word having gone out that the table expenses of the camp meeting had all been met, the trustees divided the contents of the treasury box among the ministers, as they thought proper. Now while we all rejoice and thank God for the aid to the missions and ministers, it is evident that some, of the Lord’s means that were brought here to help meet debts incurred in the erection of the large home building were turned in other channels, because calls were made in those directions. Yet we cannot help but feel that our dear Bro. Michels who labored so hard to supply the needs of the home and camp, and who has actual debts

Page 3

pressing him for material purchased for the home building, should have been remembered in the Lord’s liberalities. He had said at the close of the camp meeting, that all his grocery bill was met, but since then bills have come up that were not thought of, leaving him short on that. Besides other expenses not taken into consideration at all. We believe that a mere statement of these facts is sufficient to stir many of the beloved saints to show the same cheerful liberality that responded to other calls made here at the camp. Beloved let us “bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Whoever can send aid, much or little, address the same to S. Michels, Grand Junction, Mich., and it will redound to the glory of God, and occasion much thanksgiving. Dearly beloved brethren, for two important reasons we humbly ask you to send help to the brother soon. First, because pressing demands are upon him; second, because he expects soon to take a company of the little ones and go out holding meetings for a month or two; and what a great blessing it would be if he could go out free of present financial responsibilities! May the Lord grant it for Christ’s sake. Amen.

Dear Saints of God: The work is moving on in this country. As the time for the general camp meeting at Auburn is near at hand, we wish to urge the saints over the West to come. There are. hundreds of precious souls that need the benefit of this meeting. Many of us will have to deny ourselves, but God will reward us richly in the world to come. My prayer is that God will open up the way for you to come. Yours in Christ,

The Lord gave us a good meeting here. This is a new place. There were six consecrations. One sister had been a member of the M. E’s, for twenty years but says she was never converted till this meeting. Sire ignored her sect baptism and was buried beneath the waters of the Ohio river, which created quite a stir among the sectarians. There is considerable grumbling by sect processors, and tobacco users, but a large number endorse the truth. Your brethren,

Dear Holy Brethren: We are still in Loup Co., Neb., sending forth God’s eternal truth with the power of the Holy Ghost which falls like hail upon the heads of the wicked. We have held meeting in several places. God has manifested his mighty power in saving souls and also healing the body. There has been a glorious church raised up here for God. In the church at this place we have baptized several and there are more to follow. We are still trusting the Lord to open the way for us to get to the Oregon camp meeting. Yours in Jesus,

On Sunday we had a precious ordinance meeting, in which 17 dear saints of God took part. Now brethren, if any of you feel led of the Lord to come here and work for him in Jesus’ name, you will find a people here that are hungry for the until. If you come on the Sou. Pacific R. Dear Saints: We are praising God for complete victory in our souls. This is a beautiful country. We came here in the name of Jesus and commenced meeting in the hall. Had good attendance part of the time. God did bless his Word and it found its way in honest hearts. A number consecrated, yet some did not stand the test; but others stood firm on the Word. Two followed Christ in the ordinance of baptism. We visited homes and found hearts quite willing to receive the truth, and believe they will walk in the same. We are going to join Bro. Randolph in the battle of the Lord. Many are the calls; come and help us. Pray that we may be kept humble. Your saved sister and brother,

Dear Saints of the Living God: We are happy in God to report victory in our souls. The meeting at Big Bend, Pa. was a glorious victory. One soul was reclaimed and made happy in the love of God and one dear soul was delivered from unclean spirits, and then justified through the grace or God. God taught me a lesson of our duty in rebuking evil spirits when we come in contact with them. The work we report is not large in numbers but we want it deep and thorough so it will stand the judgment or the great day. Bro. Stowe and company were with us in this meeting and was much used of the Lord in preaching and in singing the pure sweet gospel of Jesus. Bro. Latshaw wants a meeting again there in the fail. Bro. Stowe and company go to Indiana Co., Pa. I have heard from Bro. I. S. McCoy, who will join me in the work. I ask all the saints to pray for us.

Dear Saints: Help us to praise God for what he has done for us. O how precious his word is to my soul!

We are having a very glorious meeting here. The Lord is working in a marvelous way, and many precious souls have been saved and delivered out of the delusions of the devil. Truly the work that God is doing here is wonderful. It is beyond our comprehension. Stouthearted men are being broken up, by the power of the Spirit of God; and they sit and weep as the word of the Lord goes forth.

There was one man living eight miles away and had not been to the meeting. One morning he went out to his work, but when he got out in his field, the Spirit of the Lord took hold of him, he began to weep and pray but could get no relief. So he went to the house, got ready and came to the meeting. He arrived just in time for the afternoon service. He was ready to seek God, and found deliverance in Jesus. O praise God forever! Your humble brother in Jesus,

Dear Brethren: We are glad to report victory through Jesus Christ our Lord. We came down to this place yesterday, having closed a meeting in New Cumberland, W. Va. which lasted about two weeks. One came to the altar and repented of her sins and found deliverance through the blood of Jesus. Praise the Lord! We met much prejudice against the work of the Lord in that place. Oh how much will be required at the hands of sect preachers who speak not according to the word of God, but prejudice some who would no doubt, were it not for these false shepherds, accept the truth. The 4th of July was a refreshing from the presence of the Lord. Several of she brethren were in from different places. Bro. Ward preached the Word on the street in the evening. The Lord is making the street meetings a blessing to many who would not otherwise hear the Word. Here in Toronto there are a number of saloons but they are not doing as great a work for Satan as the “destructive sects” are doing. Pray for us, and the salvation of souls here. Yours in Christ,

L. A. Kauffman, C. H. Tubbs and Co.

Dear Saints: We have just closed a successful meeting here; this was a new place. The Lord sent me here May 9, and commenced meeting in the Episcopalian house of worship, and continued until the 26th. Then I was called to Thompson, Nebraska. I held meeting there over Sunday. Three were sanctified and four baptized We closed with an ordinance meeting; three were anointed for healing. The Lord was with us in power. On June 14, I went to Seward, Neb., also a new place. Commenced meeting in a grove; afterwards we moved into the Baptist house of worship. Here the Lord blessed his Word, and some souls were saved and sanctified, others convicted, and the Lord established his church with a few members. On June 28, I came back to Ulysses, and the Lord has raised up a glorious little church here. Last Sunday three were baptized, and others will follow soon. In the afternoon we had a glorious ordinance meeting. Any of God’s ministers passing this way will be welcome to stop off and feed the flock. The Lord sent Bro. and Sister Kriebel to assist in this meeting. Also Bro. Willis came over on Lord’s day. I expect to go to Table Rock, Neb. to day. Bro. and Sister Kriebel will go to Grand Island, Lore willing. Yours in Jesus, all on the gospel altar,

Darlington, S. C.

Dear Saints: The assembly meeting at Darlington was a precious season of divine favor to us all. Owing to backwardness of the crops the attendance was not what we hoped it would be, but it was a glorious time of consecration and moving forward into the deeper things of God. Dear Bro. E. B. Haynes was ordained elder in the church of the living God. Oh how sweet is the precious Word to those that know and love the Lord! Bro. Haynes was much used of the Lord in feeding our souls of the rich things of the everlasting gospel. Oh praise his name! Five ministers were present. We held two open-air meetings on the public square during the assembly meeting. The Word preached and the sweet songs that were sung carried the truth to many hearts. Victory! Victory! was the feeling in all our hearts over prejudice, error and the power of Satan in this town as never before, while we continually lifted our voices in praises and thanksgiving to God from whom cometh all our help and who causes us to triumph in every place. 2 Cor. 2:14. We are now near Lamar, holding meeting with good attendance and glorious success. The Lord willing, we are to close to-night and go to Lucknow, S. C., and hold a meeting and from there to near Ionia, S. C. Pray for us. Yours in Jesus only,

San Francisco, Cal., July 8, 1895.

Dear Saints of the Most High, Greeting: The Lord has wonderfully been with me since my last letter. As I wrote you last I felt that God wanted me to take a hall and conduct meetings every evening during the week. I did not see the way clear to get the hall as I did not have means enough to pay for the rent, but when I realized the call of Him who knoweth how to provide for his little ones, I said, “Yes, Lord; speak, for thy servant heareth.” So yesterday one week ago I announced that the meetings would be held in the future at 130 Golden Gate Ave., then I had cards printed and distributed, announcing the meetings to be conducted every evening and three times on Sundays. And about two days after, the Lord opened the way for me so I could get some money that was coming to me. So I paid the rent and opened up for the Lord. And how good he is to us! He has given me victory and has confirmed his word. The first day’s battle closed with victory through the name of Jesus, and one soul added unto Him. Bless his holy name! Since then two more have been converted and three have been sanctified. Last Sunday afternoon I preached on God’s power to heal the body, and a poor Catholic woman who came into the meeting walking on her crutches, after being anointed and prayed for, walked out of the meeting and left her crutches in the hall. Hallelujah for such a mighty Savior! Pray much for me and the success of the work for which he has chosen me. Your brother in Christ,

Dear Saints: Praise the Lord! After a long silence I believe the Lord wants, me to send in my testimony. I am holding forth the word of life in the vicinity where I live, to the best of my knowledge. There are only a few that are standing in defence of the whole truth in this locality. And we are growing in grace, but not as fast as we might; but as the light makes manifest, the cause can be seen. Praise the Lord! I am saved from all sin, in the one body.

Dear Readers: I wish to testify of what the Lord has done for me. I lived in sin eighteen years but I thank God he has saved me from hell. O praise his holy name forever! Pray for me that I may know more of the wonderful love of God. Oh I cannot tell what great things he is doing for me since I have accepted his blessed Word. Dear Sisters and Brothers: I will write my testimony. May be it will help some poor weak soul like myself. It does my soul so much good to read the testimonies in the Trumpet. It is food for me. I do feel sometimes like I had more trials than I could stand, but by the help of my blessed Savior I am more than conqueror. I do trust my all with Jesus. I am justified and purified in the precious blood of Christ. I have a great struggle in this life to serve God, but I will serve him whatever comes. He is my all in all. I have been serving the Lord for two years, although my husband has been bitterly opposed all the time. But praise be to God, I will serve him, no difference how hard the trials. Glory to God for victory over sin and the devil! I cannot praise my dear Savior enough for his tender mercies and kindness to me.

Dear Saints of God: This morning finds me sweetly saved in God. Praise his holy name! I do give God all the glory for saving my soul. We have a Savior that saves us every moment, and we can trust him in every thing. I am consecrated to do his will. I am here alone with no one but Christ. He is my shepherd; I shall not want. He has redeemed me from all sin. Glory to his name! The more the people deny God’s word, the plainer God makes his word to me. Christ suffered for us, leaving us an example that we should follow his steps, who did no sin neither was guile found in his mouth. That is the way we will have to walk in his steps. When we get out of them we leave the narrow path that leads to heaven. That is why so many people miss heaven; they get out of Christ’s steps. “Enter ye in at the strait gate, for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat. Because strait is the gate and narrow is the way which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” I am eighteen years old and how thankful I am that I am in the Lord. Pray for me. Dear Saints of the Living God: I am praising God for a saving grace, that saves and keeps me unspotted from this world. I know that he has forgiven my sins, and cleansed me from all unrighteousness. Blessed be his name forever! I do love to sing his praises aloud, and tell to my friends such sweetness there is in trusting a true and loving Savior. Oh I do praise his name that he has lifted me out of Babylon darkness into this precious true light of his Word, and I can truly say, where he leads I will follow. I do love to testify that I am dead to the world and alive in Christ Jesus. My little four-year-old boy, was taken very suddenly with severe attack of croup and tonsilitis. And my husband being unsaved, we gave him a dose or two of medicine, which failed to bring any relief. Next evening as he grew worse my husband decided to take him over and let the doctor see him. All this time I had prayed earnestly, but could only say, God’s will be done. When all at once there seemed to burst upon me such a light from heaven and a voice said unto me, “Trust your child with me, I will heal him.” I stood and trembled, but did not fall, for the strong arms of Jesus were encircling me. Praise his name! And again I heard the same sweet voice, and it seemed as though the very heavens were opened over me. I said, I will try it by the Word, but before I could turn to go in after my Bible, Mark 16:18 flashed through my mind, and other corresponding scriptures, and I said “Lord, I hear thee; I’ll do it,” and I then knew the work was done. And I did testify, and he improved rapidly. It has often troubled me about giving my little ones medicine, and declining to take it myself. But he has taught me to trust all away with him. Dear friends, may his praises be continually upon our lips, for he that offereth praises glorifies God. Amen.

Your saved sister all on the altar,

Mildred Moore.

BALASTER. — Died June 8. Sister Sarah Balaster. She was a sufferer with consumption for a long while, and about a week before she died, when she saw that there was no hope of recovering, she was convicted of her sins, and realizing her lost condition, she called on God, and on June 1, the Lord saved her soul, and from that time until she died she was fully satisfied, and testified she was ready to go and be with Jesus, and with tears in her eyes praised God for her soul’s salvation; and so passed from this earth and suffering to rest. All she said during her sickness was that she felt sorry that she did not seek God sooner. Her age was about fifty-four years. May God bless her companion, who is unsaved, and help him to seek Jesus. Funeral services were conducted by the saints here.

SARTIN. — Mrs. Nancy J. Sartin died at her home near Cedar Vale, Kan., June 28, 1895. She left a husband and eight children to mourn her departure. She was born in Monroe county, Kentucky, Mar. 19, 1843. Was married to H. C. Sartin in 1866. In August 1870, she moved to Cowley county, Kan., where she has resided until her death. Mrs. Sartin has lived a faithful and consistent Christian for twenty years and left a bright testimony behind her. Her life had been one of adversity but she had borne it all calmly, patiently and without murmuring. She was loved by all who knew her and as a consequence left many sorrowing friends. The illness which took her away had been of long duration yet she had complained so little that but few persons knew of it. While conscious she asked her family to meet her in the glory world and when dissolution finally came, she closed her eyes to open them again to brighter and more beautiful scenes than she had ever known. Bro. Defore conducted the funeral services at the cemetery.

GO (Mark 16:15.)

WHAT IS NECESSARY IN ORDER TO GO?

MUST FORSAKE ALL. Luke 14:33 — So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

TO WHAT EXTENT? Luke 5:1-11 — And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, and saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. And when they had this done, they enclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: and so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.

2 Tim. 2:4 — No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

SHALL WE LOSE ANYTHING? Mat. 16:25 — For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.

Mark 10:28-30 — Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee. And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s, but he shall receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.

Luke 22:35 — And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye anything? And they said, Nothing.

1 Cor. 9:14 — Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

WE MUST HAVE POWER AND AUTHORITY. Mic. 3:8 — But truly I am full of power by the Spirit of the Lord, and of judgement, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his transgression, and to Israel his sin.

Jer. 5:14 — Wherefore thus saith the Lord God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.

Luke 24:49 — And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

Acts 1:8 — But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

2 Cor. 10:4, 5 — (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds;) casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.

Tit. 2:15 — These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

1 Pet. 1:12 — Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.

MUST HAVE POWER OVER ALL DEVILS AND DISEASES. Mark 6:7 — And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits. 13 — And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them.

Luke 9:1 — Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.

MUST HAVE WISDOM FROM HEAVEN. Mat. 10:16 — Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

Jas. 3:13—18 — Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him show out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

MUST HAVE HOLY BOLDNESS. Deut. 20:1—8 — When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the Lord thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. And it shall be, when ye are come nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people, and shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye approach this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your hearts faint, fear not, and do not tremble, neither be ye terrified because of them; for the Lord your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.

And the offcers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it. And what man is he that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not yet eaten of it? let him also go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man eat of it. And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her. And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren’s heart faint as well as his heart.

Judges 7:3 — Now therefore go to, proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand.

Acts 4:13 — Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. 29 — And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word.

MUST FEEL THE CALL, AND THE HOLY IMPULSE TO GO. Isa. 6:6-9 — Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: and he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched my lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged. Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.

And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. Jer. 1:6-10 — Then said I, Ah, Lord God! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child.

But the Lord said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak. Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord. Then the Lord put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the Lord said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth. See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant.

Rom. 10:15 — And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things.

Acts 1:8 — But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

HOW SHALL WE GO?

Acts 13:4 — So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus.

16:6-10 — Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and Were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the Word in Asia, after they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not. And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us. And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavored to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them.

Mat. 10:7 — And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Jno. 3:34 — For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.

17:18 — As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

7:16-18 — Jesus answered them, and said. My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

2 Cor. 4:5 — For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’s sake.

WHERE SHALL WE GO?

Mat. 28:19 — Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

Luke 14:21, 23 — So that servant came, and showed his Lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind. And the lord Said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.

Mark 16:15 — And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Acts 8:26 — And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south, unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.

Mat. 10:11 — And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, inquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence.

WHAT SHALL WE PREACH?

Jonah 3:2 — Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.

Luke 9:59-62 — And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

2 Tim. 4:1, 2 — I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

1 Cor. 2:12, 13 — Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

Tit. 1:9 — Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

2:1-10 — But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: that the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; that they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. Young men likewise exhort to be soberminded. In all things showing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. Exhort servants to be obedient unto their masters, and to please them well in all things, not answering again; not purloining, but showing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things.

EXAMPLES OF OBEDIENCE.

Mark 6:12, 13 — And they went out, and preached that men should repent. And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.

Acts 5:41, 42 — And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name. And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.

8:4, 5 — Therefore they that were scattered abroad went everywhere preaching the Word. Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them. 35 — Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same Scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

20:27 — For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.

NECESSITY OF OBEDIENCE.

1 Cor. 9:16, 17 — For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel! For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me.

HOW LONG SHALL WE PREACH IN A PLACE?

Mat. 10:11—15 — And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, inquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence. And when ye come into a house, salute it. And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you. And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for that city. 23 — But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.

Acts 13:46 — Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. 50, 51 — But the Jews stirred up the devout and honorable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts. But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium.

14:5, 6, 7 — And when there was an assault made both of the Gentiles, and also of the Jews with their rulers, to use them despitefully, and to stone them, they were ware of it, and fled unto Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and unto the region that lieth round about: and there they preached the gospel. 19-21 — And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium, who persuaded the people, and, having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing he had been dead. Howbeit, as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up, and came into the city: and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe. And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch.

EXAMPLES.

Paul at Corinth. Acts 18:11 — And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.

At Ephesus. Acts. 20:31 — Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.

At Rome. Acts 28:30 — And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all who came in unto him.

HOW GOD DELIVERED ME OF DEVILS.

_____

Jeffersonville, Ind.

Dear Family of God: It is with a heart that has no other desire than to glorify the great God of heaven that I attempt to write my testimony through the Trumpet. Hoping that it may be the means of helping some other poor soul who may be bound in the clutches of the devil. I have been a wretched sinner all my life, and when I look back over the past I wonder how God could bear with me so long; and then when I was willing to turn from my sins he was so willing to receive me. O praise his name! praise his name!

About a year ago this coming July God permitted me to met with a dear precious soul who took me to her home and was as a mother to me (I was an invalid). She talked to me of Jesus and pled with me to give him my heart, I did, and was saved up to all the light she gave me on the Word. But her teaching did not show me that I had to make every crooked thing straight; but my understanding was, I had to confess everything to God, and then Christ’s blood stood good for all. But oh praise God, Father knew I was deluded and sent the word which is sharper than a two-edged sword. Along in September Father sent two of his dear children to my bed side (Sister Orr and Sister Myers) who were then holding a meeting at Louisville, Ky. They talked to me about my soul, and their talk was all so plain and simple and so easy to be understood, that it put me to deep thinking and as soon as I was well enough I returned home, began to study the Word and ask God to give me a real experience of the same, deep down in my heart. Having learned that Sister Myers resided at Louisville, I desired her to come and see me, and she came, and oh how God did send the truth of his plan of salvation! I saw that I was weighed in the balance and found wanting.

And it was then the devil began to work and usurp his authority over me. I wanted to do God’s will, as his word taught me to restore the pledge, etc., and make every crooked thing straight, I promised God I would do his will but when I would try to begin the work the devil would get me to put it off and wait, and Father was so patient with me. Bless his dear name! He gave me one opportunity after another, but it seemed I could not. So Father just dropped me, and the devils took possession. And oh my pen would fail to describe the awful tortures I went through. The devil seemed to come and put his chain about me and let me down into the very depths of hell. I lay like one dead, yet was conscious of all that was said and done. Sister Myers was sent for and two other children of God came with her. My jaws were set and I was not dared to speak, and with all her efforts to arouse me I was not permitted to open my eyes nor speak. I was bound by the devil. She fell upon her knees and prayed God to take full charge of the case, surrender all into his dear hands for him to do the work. I could hear the prayer but dared not move. So they laid hands on me for the casting out of devils and with a mighty faith in God and holding on to the precious promises in his Word, I was delivered. But oh what a struggle I had. The devils were so mad; my past life was so completely the devil’s that he was determined he would not give me up. But oh, praise God, all hell has to surrender when God says its enough.

Now dear precious souls let me plead with you, never try to Jew God down to your ways. I have learned by a sad experience that he will not Jew an inch. Praise his dear name! and I am so glad he won’t, for his ways are so sweet to me now, since I have yielded my all to him and meet the conditions of his Word and have the assurance deep down in my soul that I am redeemed through the blood of his only Son. Oh how unworthy I am of such a Savior! I can never praise him enough for sending the pure gospel in the evening light to my dark sin-cursed soul. I have taken him for my physician for soul and body, and it is just wonderful how he has been guiding me. Pray that I may be strong and a bright light for Jesus. I want to be completely dead to self and the world, hid away with Christ in God. I am praying for the perfecting grace; I want to be wholly sanctified, for the word of God says, “Without holiness no man shall see the Lord.” Pray for my husband that he may give up all and be saved.

“Soon the conflict will be over,
Crowns await the firm and pure;
Forward, brethren, work and suffer,
Faithful to the end endure.”

Your humble sister, saved and kept,

Libbie Cox.
