Soul-rest.

_____

There’s rest for weary hearts down here,
And home for stainless souls up there;
I need not wear the chain till death,
I need not till my latest breath
In bondage go.

The pastures green are here, not there;
His love brings rest and peace, not fear;
Believing now, I share that rest,
For God is sure to give what’s best
His trusting child.

God asks no servile life from me,
I will his will, that makes me free:
What wonder, then, if all along
My lips and life are full of song,
For he is mine.

A life of worry, want and wear,
A life of discord, doubt, and care,
I may not, will not, live on earth;
It ill becomes the second birth
Of God’s own child.

Though others wear a yoke that galls,
A service which the soul enthralls,
I can be strong, I will be free;
God shall be glorified in me
In life and death.

Not in some envied store of wealth,
Nor in the blushing glow of health,
Nor in the favor of some friend,
Nor aught that with this world can end.
Is found my joy.

My joy, and O, this joy is mine,
That I may in his image shine,
That to my soul his will is sweet,
And I am sitting at his feet
To hear his words.

And he is king in this poor heart,
And I am glad to take a part
In any burden, work or cross,
Reproach or sorrow, pain or loss
That honors him.

Not what he gives is my chief bliss,
But what he is; and mine be this
To know, to love, to serve, adore
My Savior, king for evermore —
This is my heaven.

WHAT ABOUT THE ANIMALS IN THE NEW EARTH?

IN the letter at the head of these articles, the brother suggested that in the new heavens and the new earth, of his idea the animals would be restored to a state of harmlessness like before sin entered this earth. The scriptures cited are found in Isa. 11 and 65 chapters. Let us see what is meant; “The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and dust shall be the serpent’s meat. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the Lord.” Isa. 65:25.

These words, we freely admit, are associated with the new heavens and new earth and the new Jerusalem, spoken of in the same chapter. But they do not affirm that the wild animals shall be changed over the face of the earth. The lesson is to be understood in a spiritual light. “For they are the seed of the blessed of the Lord, and their offspring with them.” Verse 23. “And it shall come to pass that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.” Verse 24. This shows a holy and acceptable state of God’s people. The very state now enjoyed by the pure in heart in the dispensation of the Holy Spirit. Then follows the statement that the “wolf and the lamb shall feed together,” etc. “They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the Lord.” Not in … the earth, nor yet in the renewed earth, as the millennial theory would require. But in all God’s holy mountain, that dearly means his church. “And it shall come to pass in the last days, (i. e., “IN THESE LAST DAYS.” Heb. 1:2. And “WE KNOW THAT IT IS THE LAST TIME.” 1 John 2:18.) that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountains of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob, and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths; for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.” Isa. 2:2, 3. Any unperverted spiritual mind can see from this that the mountain of the Lord’s house is his holy church, from which goes forth the light of divine truth to the nations of the earth. Now it is only on this holy mountain that the lion and the wolf and the bear shall not hurt nor destroy. All through the Bible men and women are compared to animals. Christ called Herod “that fox.” Paul said, “beware of dogs.” In Eze. 34 we find a whole chapter in which sheep and cattle are used to represent men. “And ye my flock, the flock of my pasture, are men, and I am your God, saith the Lord.” Verse 31. Need any thing be plainer than this? Depraved men are compared to devouring beasts. Salvation makes them all docile and harmless. So it is only on God’s holy mountain, in his church that this scripture is fulfilled, and it is by a perverted imagination applied to the literal animals of the whole earth. The same idea is found in Isa. 35:8-10, where the figure is changed from the holy mountain to the holy way. This way refers to Christ. (John 14:6.) “No lion shall be there, nor any ravenous beast shall go up thereon, it shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there.” It were utterly ridiculous to think of literal beasts walking in the high way of holiness; and no less so to think of them dwelling on the mountain of God’s holiness. In both cases it simply means that men of unrenewed hearts and under the sway of low animal passions cannot dwell in God’s church.

Isa. eleventh chapter is also referred to as proof that the lower animals shall be changed in the supposed millennial reign. Beloved, take your Bible and read the entire lesson. The chapters begins thus: “And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots.” Ver. 1. This is a prediction of Christ. He was a descendant of David, and David was a son of Jesse. “And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,” etc. See Mat. 12:18 and Mark 1:10. “And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reign.” All this is true of Christ in his present reign. Then follow these words:

“The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fading together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice’ den.

They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.” Isa. 11:6-9. All this is simply a highly figurative lesson showing the radical change in the nature of men from the base animal to the holy and harmless. And observe it is here again confined to the church of the living God, “In all my holy mountain,” and not in all the earth. But does it not say that “the earth shall be full of righteousness as the waters cover the sea?” That would be well suited to the millennial theory, and by its advocates it is nearly always so quoted. But it does not read so. But “the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.” Under the law dispensation the true God was but little known outside of the Jewish tribes. In fact, the law was exclusively given to that nation. But the gospel era was announced by the angel of the Lord as “good tidings of great joy, which shall be unto all people.” And so rapidly did the knowledge of the Lord spread abroad in the gospel of his Son, that already in the apostles’ time, Paul said “the word of truth” is come “in all the world.” Col 1:5, 6. It is true that its glorious light was largely smothered by the darkness and machinery of sectism in the long apostasy of the middle age. But thanks be to God, many scriptures clearly promise that it shall go forth as brightness, and as a lamp that burneth in the last end of the last days. “This gospel of the kingdom must first be preached in all the world for a witness unto every nation, and then shall the end come.” Mat. 24:14. Daniel also says that in “the time of the end” “many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.” Chap. 12. Namely, the knowledge of the true God shall be published in all nations, and shall cover the earth as the waters the sea. The word of Isa. 11:9 simply refers to this dissemination of the gospel of God to all the nations of the Gentile world. This is intimated in the next verse: “And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.” Isa. 11:10. Under the law dispensation the knowledge of the Creator was confined to the Jews, but under the gospel it goes to all the Gentile nations. And by a wild flight of imaginations, this is made to say by the millennial advocates that all the earth shall be under the sway of righteousness.

In Hab. 2:14 the language is still stronger: “For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.” The passage in Mat. 24:14 has reference to the universal dissemination of this gospel in these last days, while the passage in Hab. speaks more definitely of the great holiness reformation that is sweeping over the earth. The “glory of the Lord” is the “holiness of the Lord,” and the knowledge of the same shall be, and indeed is rapidly being disseminated in all the world. And yet, with all this, the earth is not filled with righteousness; but sin abounds. As Daniel says, the wicked do wickedly. Accordingly, immediately following the above announcement in Hab. the saloon business, which is now cursing the earth, is spoken of as brought under the woe of the Almighty through the uplifted standard of the holiness, or “glory of the Lord.”

THE NEW JERUSALEM HAS COME TO EARTH.

We have seen in Rev. 21 its appearance is associated with the “Tabernacle of God with men,” which fully began on the day of pentecost. We have also seen that it is identical with the bride of Christ, and proved that Christ was married to his church from the days of John the baptist. But now let us turn back to one of our brother’s proof texts for the millennial new Jerusalem, i. e., Isa. 65, begin at verse 12; “Therefore will I number you to the sword, and ye shall all bow down to the slaughter.” Was not this fulfilled in the downfall and awful slaughter of the Jews? The curse of God upon them numbered them to the sword; and the reason follows: “Because when I called ye did not answer,” etc. He called them last of all by his own Son, and they refused him, and put the Lord of glory to death. “Therefore, thus saith the Lord God, Behold, my servants shall eat, but ye shall be hungry: behold, my servants shall drink, but ye shall be thirsty: behold, my servants shall rejoice, but ye shall be ashamed: behold, my servants shall sing for joy of heart, but ye shall cry for sorrow of heart, and shall howl, for vexation of spirit.” Isa. 65:13, 14.

The Gentiles were grafted in, became the servants of God, and were blessed, whereas the Jews were broken off and thus dejected. “And ye shall leave your name for a curse unto my chosen: for the Lord God shall slay thee, and call his servants by another name.” Verse 15. The Jews lost the name of God’s chosen and peculiar people, and became the people of his curse. And the new church, founded by our Lord Jesus, was called by a new name which was given by the mouth of the Lord. “That he who blesseth himself in the earth shall bless himself in the God of truth.” Verse 16. Here is the gospel dispensation. “The law came by Moses, but grace and truth by the Lord Jesus Christ.” “For, behold, I create new heavens and new earth, and the former shall not be remembered nor come into mind.” Verse 17. Here the new heavens and the new earth were created at the time of, and in connection with the change of dispensation when the Lord came, the Jews were rejected and slaughtered, and the new order was set up. Its appearance, therefore, is not a thing of the future, but of the past. And now we pass to the next verse: “But be ye glad and rejoice forever in that which I create: for, behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing and her people a joy.” Verse 18. The new heavens and new earth, as we have seen in a former article, are identical with the new Jerusalem, a new dispensation and church, and the whole were created nearly nineteen hundred years ago. Let men and women get filled with all the glory of the present Holy Spirit dispensation and they will not call our words an hard saying.

Rev. 3:12 does not point to the new Jerusalem as a future creation, but as that “which cometh down [present time] out of heaven from God.” This heavenly Jerusalem is also declared to be “the mother of us all.” Gal. 3:26. It was not the angels in heaven and saints who had already departed to be with Jesus, nor a city yet to be created who travailed in soul and wrought with God for our salvation, but the church of God on earth.

But in Heb. 12:22-24 we have the most unequivocal testimony that the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem had already come down from heaven; and the children of God had already entered the same in A. D. 64, at the writing of that epistle. Read and believe the inspired Word. “But ye are come” — [a form of expression often adopted in the word of God, having the same force of have come.] “Ye are come unto mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which is written in heaven, etc. To Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaketh better things than that of Abel.” We in Christ Jesus are come unto all these things. To deny, therefore, that we are already come unto this heavenly Jerusalem, is likewise to deny that we have come to the church of the firstborn; to deny that we have come to Christ, and to his precious cleansing blood. In other words, if this city of the living God is still a future creation, or yet to appear on earth, then the church of the firstborn is not yet on earth, Jesus has not yet come, and his blood has not yet been shed. For it cannot be denied that all these things are grouped together in the same grammatical relations to the verb, “are come,” and in the objective case to the preposition “unto.” And so it follows that he that has not come to the heavenly Jerusalem has not come to Christ, the mediator of the new covenant, nor to his church, and his cleansing blood.

THE GATHERING TOGETHER INTO ONE.

_____

The world — unsaved — has long since, with Bishop Foster, lost confidence in the “Pompous empty fraud” of sectarian formality, and of the substituting of the “form for the fact,” as the true church of God and way of salvation. Now if the blind lead the blind all will fall together in the ditch. And so have they woefully fell already. Sects have made, and are making a great deal out of the “Christian Endeavor, and the Young Men’s Christian (so- called) Association,” as means or centers for uniting of all denominations. To unite people is one thing, and to unite them to Christ is another. Take the Y. M. C. A., this week I see bills, or posters, out in large letters, “Prayer meeting every night this week.” The next week I see bills up for some dramatic performance or exhibition bordering closely on the theatrical to be held at the same place under the auspices of the Y. M. C. A. In Wilkinsburg the Y. M. C. A. own the Base Ball grounds where match games are played with the principal cities of the union. And on this inclosed ball-ground they have a tent put up for holding prayer meetings in and other religious services. The world, or unsaved people have no confidence in such.

“All that pass by clap their hands at thee; they hiss and wag their lead at the [professed] daughter of Jerusalem, saying, Is this the city that men call the perfection of beauty, the joy of the whole earth?” Lam. 2:15. Oh, no: they know better; they know it is no better than the non-professing world. This is man’s way of bringing together into the broad way. The perfection of beauty — the beauty of holiness — comes down out of heaven not made by man. “And I John saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem coming down from God out of heaven.” Rev. 21:2.

To “gather into one” is to gather “even in him.” Eph. 1:10. He is the head over all things to the church, which is his body. “That in the fulness of times he might gather together in one, all things in Christ. Eph. 1:10. Man’s attempt to gather factions (sects) together and make one body out of pieces made up of unsaved men, and so think to take the work out of God’s hands, is a blindness that is equaled only by men organizing sects to complete the work for the salvation of men, as though Christ had not finished the work that the Father gave him to do. See Acts 17:24, 28. God needs no such help or union.

None but the pure in heart shall see God in peace. If you would be among the blood-washed throng when he cometh to gather his elect unto himself at the last day, then make haste to make your peace with God and let him give you a pure heart. There is an awful woe pronounced upon every sinner, and, oh, what a pitiful, sorrwful time it will be when the great day of reckoning comes and the wicked are ushered into their abiding place in a burning hell. Among them will be found every holiness fighter, the unholy religious professors, the self-righteous, those who tried to slip through with a mere moral life, not heeding the words,” Ye must be born again,” the drunkard, gambler, thief, liar, tattler, the proud and haughty, abusers of themselves, and all the other evil doers, with a host of preachers who have failed to preach the whole word of God. Highland, O., Dec. 13, 1894.

EDITOR GOSPEL TRUMPET.

Grand Junction, Mich. — I feel it my duty to write to you for information. There has been a man in our town selling Bibles and taking orders for a paper. He said he was traveling for your firm, and had been for years. He has been here canvassing for a week or so and collected considerable money and has skipped with no signs of his return. His name is Harry Worley, and says his home is Shenandoah, Iowa. Have you such a man working for you?

Miss Mary Cobaugh.

ANSWER: — No: we have no such man in our employ. He is undoubtedly a fraud, and will doubtless try the same game somewhere else unless exposed or brought to justice. We make an open letter of this that the brethren elsewhere may be on the alert.

Since receiving the above letter we have just received the following letter:

CASTING OUT UNCLEAN SPIRITS.

_____

When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then geeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation. — Matt. 12:43—45.

This is a passage of Scripture that should be understood, especially by those whom God has sent forth to preach his word and given power and authority to cast out evil spirits. It should be remembered that casting devils out of a man does not save his soul. It only places him in a condition where he can repent. To neglect this important step immediately after the unclean spirit has been cast out, leaves the soul in great peril, because the evil spirit is sure to come back to his old dwelling place, and if the place is found empty — swept and garnished — without the Spirit of God or any power of resistance to keep back the power of the enemy, it is just what he wants, and goes and gen other spirits worse than himself and comes and overpowers the man and takes possession of him, and truly the last state of that man is worse than the first. But if the unclean spirit returns and finds the man saved, having the Spirit of God to resist all opposing power, it is impossible for such evil spirits to enter.

The devil is very shrewd sometimes, and with persons whom he has floundered about for some time, he will tell them that he has already taken possession, and thus try to make them believe a lie so he can destroy their souls, or have a better chance at them.

While there are many in these days who are possessed with legions of devils and unclean spirits, there are many others whom Satan is buffeting about, making believe that they are possessed of evil spirits, when it is only a mere accusation of the devil, who needs to be soundly rebuked and resisted “steadfastly in the faith.” “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Shout a victory over him, and trust your case in the hands of Him who is able to keep in perfect peace and safety all that we have committee in his care, and all will be well, though Satan may roar and come with a flood of accusations and persecutions, let your will be subject to the will of God and the enemy cannot touch you. Often persons who are not possessed with evil spirits are, in a sense, bound by the devil. Others are harassed almost to death with accusations and doubts. Such ones need to rebuke the adversary of their soul and take the Word of God and believe it, instead of believing the whisperings of Satan.

When Satan has taken full possession of a man he is not apt to tell such a person that he is possessed with devils, but keeps still about it unless exposed by the Spirit of God, then he will make a desperate effort to hold his own. If the devil can keep a soul under continual accusations, even though such a one may be free from sin, he is not caring so much whether he has possession or not, just so he can keep one in a doubtful condition.

Thank God! there is victory and deliverance for all who will obey God, and who are willing to follow whithersoever he leads.

GOD IS CALLING.

Manning, Mo., Dec. 9, 1894.

Dear Bro. Byrum and all the Dear Ones of the Trumpet: God bless you all. I feel the hand of God upon me for the missionary work, and I want the prayers of the saints that God may fit me for it. A few weeks ago I felt a real inspiration to study the German language. I got a German grammar and begun, not knowing why I was to learn it. A few nights ago Father kindly showed me his will in it by a vision, or dream, as the case may be. As I slept I felt myself moved out to preach the truth in parts far distant from home. I moved out and found myself alone in China. I met with a native who seemed to understand what my mission was, and tried to talk with me, but I could not speak his language. He was deeply interested in me and took me to a room where a number were gathered together. It seemed they were taking instructions from a missionary. When my guide informed them that I was a messenger sent to teach full salvation, all were at once deeply interested and tried to talk to me, but I could speak but a few words in German, and none in Chinese. I was told to speak in German, as they could understand that. I told them that I could not speak much, but was earnestly studying it, and would soon be able to speak it. At this one of the number who seemed to be a German missionary, whose face shone with the glory of God, said. Praise the Lord! with ring as clear and hearty as I ever heard in a camp of saints. They seemed to be earnestly waiting till I could learn the language enough to instruct. While there a messenger arrived from the emperor of China with the promise of the emperor that all the missionaries in his domain would be protected at all cost. This last I took to be a token from the Spirit of God that China is now ripe for the pure gospel. This part of the vision ended, and I again found myself standing on the eastern shore of our own land ready to embark as a missionary. Oh how I felt the depth of the consecration I had made for Christ, and the lost and Christ were all to me. As I faced the ocean I felt that behind me lay all that had ever been dear on earth, and before me lay the waters of the mighty ocean, and beyond this the dark land where lay my life-work for Jesus. As I started out on the water I thought of its great expanse and of the possible shipwreck there. Then I thought of the tender love of him who numbers all the hairs of our heads, and I put all fears aside. As I left the shore of my native land my soul by inspiration received some lines that I had not read or heard before, and I sang them in a tune sweet and heavenly, my soul being melted with a sense of God’s love and my full submission to him. At the close of the lines I awoke, but the lovely music is gone. I cannot recall it. The first few lines are also gone. The first of the lines expressed the sense of my unworthiness, the next, my trust in God, and the last, my consecration.

These are the few lines that I can recall and about as the Spirit gave them to me:

I’ll doubt his tender love no more,
Though I sail the sea from shore to snore;
I’ll gladly cross the rolling wave
If I may some dying mortal save.

Whether God will send me to Germany or to teach the German missionaries in China I am not sure, but the latter seems to be the burden of the Spirit. I know not when he will send me, but am sure that his hand is strongly upon me preparing me for the work. I am learning the German quite fast, and God is helping me. But as I must give my time to the work of God herein the South I need your prayers that he will speed me in learning. Dear ones, agree with me that he make my understanding wonderfully clear and enable me to get hold of the language rapidly. Yours in Christ,

R. M. Haynes.

Dear Brethren: I noticed a mistake in my last news. It was in regard to the lady that was healed at Canby. She was nearly blind instead of totally blind. I desire you to correct it in the next paper because I do not wish to have it exagerated. The mistake may have been mine. Please address us at Harbor Springs. Dear Brethren: May great grace and peace be multiplied unto you through Jesus Christ our Lord. Through the providence of God I was permitted to attend the assembly meeting at Holiness Chapel, Clark Co., O. This assembly was not extensive, but of those in attendance, the greater part was attentive to the word of the Lord administered by his servants. Several who had formerly obtained the remission of sins, and were adopted into the family of God, went on to perfection being sanctified, while there were a few who followed the Lord in regeneration, being by him added to the church; The ministers present were Bro’s. Speck, Schell, Warren and Yoder. There were three or four buried with Christ by baptism near the close of the meeting by Bro. Schell. We are now at Payne, O. engaged in a protracted meeting with the brethren of this place, and we desire the united prayers of the saints in behalf of this meeting. Your brother saved and sanctified,

A. J. Kilpatrick.

Dear Trumpet Readers: May the rich blessings of our Father be with you all. Amen. I feel it is the will of God this morning for me to write a few words to inform all the dear ones of what the dear Lord is doing for us in these parts. First of all I wish to say, Praise the Lord! I know I am saved to the uttermost and kept each day from sin. A few days over a year ago the evening light was preached here first by Bro. and Sister Jacobson & Co. Quite a number accepted it at once and stepped out straight for God. Others hesitated for a time, not being clear on some points as taught by the Co., but since have come out fully for the truth and are now rejoicing in God’s great salvation. Truly God has been with us in mighty saving, sanctifying and healing power. Praise his dear name forever! Since the Co. came to this state there has been about one hundred souls brought out into the evening light, and still the good work is moving on. Amen. Your brother sweetly saved,

E. C. Moys.

Dear Saints of God: I am happy to report that I am fully saved. We have just closed a meeting in Alma, Mich. which continued ten days. In this meeting three souls made their way to God. Among the number was Sister Erwin, formerly from Ark.

Page 3

God’s Spirit strove with her during the meeting, and the last night as I was about to dismiss the assembly, she arose and said, “I can’t leave this hall until I get saved.” Praise God! we soon got on our knees, and her soul was restored to the favor of God.

We were much strengthened in the fore part of the meeting by Bro. and Sister Walters, also Bro. and Sister Wagner, and dear Bro. Reeves, whom God used in preaching his holy word. On account of bad roads we were obliged to close. Our prayer is that the seed sown may be as bread cast upon the waters. Sectism is trembling in these parts; surely the judgments of God’s word shake her sandy foundations, and she must fall. May God bless those who so kindly shared with us of their hospitalities, and reward them with a crown of life. Any one desiring us to hold meetings can notify me at the above place. Pray for me. Your humble brother,

To all the Saints, Greeting: We are happy to report unto you in his name, that the work is still prospering gloriously and increasing in these parts. Light and truth are rapidly spreading and precious souls are being saved. But this is only as a small drop in the ocean, to that which yet ought to be accomplished for God. Dear ones, Christ the Lord is verily indeed at the door. For already the world of Sodom is looking squarely into the threatening face of eternity and trembling under its coming. O the awful catastrophe now nigh at hand! Then, O ye sons of men, flee to the mount of holiness and be safely housed in the everlasting ark, Jesus. Dear ones, be up and be doing, for the time is nigh at hand, when he shall come to reward all men according to their works. Pray for the success and support of the Pacific saints’ school and home. Yours in deep love and pleading for precious souls,

Dear Brethren in Christ: Greeting in his dear name. We are well and saved, bless the Lord! Nov. 10th I started for Kentucky. On the evening of the eleventh, met with the church at, or near Groons P. O. and found quite a number saved, and also some that were not right trying to profess holiness. But the mouth of the Lord kept not silent day nor night tor one week. The precious were taken from the vile, and many who saw their condition confessed their sins and got right with God, while others like icicles were melted off.

May God bless the little ones at that place and keep them free from every yoke. On the 19th, four were baptized, and the same evening the meeting closed with a precious ordinance service, twenty-six taking part. On the 20th, in company with Bro. May, we went to Stanton, Ky. and held two meetings; some few seemed pleased with the truth. Feeling that the Lord wanted us at Stony Point, Ky., we went there the 21st of Nov. Here we had a glorious meeting with the saints. The little ones, were much strengthened, and some who were not clear confessed their faults and were reclaimed. Several sinners were saved and believers were sanctified. May God bless all the dear ones and reward them for their kindness.

Meeting closed at this place Nov. 25th. There is quite a large field of labor in Kentucky. We hope to return in the future. I am working with my hands at present. Will go to Crothersville, Ind. soon, the Lord willing. Pray for us and the work. We are saved, sanctified and satisfied. Your brother and sister,

Dear Brethren in the Lord: Praise the Lord, oh my soul, and praise him all ye his saints! For his mercy endureth forever and his faithfulness never changeth! My heart is full of rejoicing, for ere we yet called upon him last night, he had answered in the case of two of the dear ones that we set ourselves to pray for jointly. The one possessed was delivered on Monday; yet Satan kept up a semblance of former appearances for a short time, owing to the extreme exhaustion of vital forces. The cause of this piece of deviltry was, as I suspected, secret vice; the object of his oppression as I told in my letter of 12th, a young man, twenty-two years old. The deliverance is complete and glorious, two sound conversions and bright experiences being the result. This all serves much to the discomfiture of the observing sectarians, who stand aghast at this work of the Lord. The other case mentioned in my letter Dec. 12th, was that of the young married woman, who, owing to her marriage, five years ago to an utter scorner, whilst she had been already converted to the Lord, got under the power of the devil and had frequent epileptic fits. The more earnestly her believing mother prayed, who yet was in obscurity and sectism, the more frequent these fits became, until they came now once or twice a day. The woman was brought by her mother to the home of the young man above mentioned, last Monday afternoon, where I met them by appointment. The leadings of God were clear to me and the blessed Spirit of grace enabled me to deal with these dear oppressed souls in faithfulness, and God’s blessings rested so wonderfully upon the work of his servant, that both these souls yielded to the wooings of the Lord and the devils were cast out. The seal came to both on Thursday clear and bright. The woman testified boldly in meeting yesterday evening to her healing in spirit, soul and body, and the young man is gaining strength rapidly and is already planning to rescue some of his former companions in sin and misery. Oh praise the Lord for the power of the full gospel! I have no news yet concerning Mrs. Clemeson, the third person I asked your prayers for, but trust that ere long she will receive the healing touch, as the work in her soul is going on graciously. The German brethren to the number of eight, came to the meeting in her house last Wednesday evening and enjoyed her testimony to her salvation greatly, and she got very happy over the incoming of the Lord into her heart and home. Now, will the dear saints everywhere pray for the establishment of these saved souls, and rendering praises unto God. Ask him to restore the mother of the boy reclaimed from the way to the insane asylum where she has been confined for eight years already, also for the conversion of the husbands of the two women mentioned? We are bold enough to ask the Lord for just these things here. I would like to say more about the work here, but fear it will prove too long for this time. Saints everywhere that have been praying for me, and the work the Lord has laid upon me, oh give thanks unto the Lord and keep praying, for he is listening to your request! To him be all the glory. Amen! Your brother,

Fred L. Hahn.

Here is part of a letter received by me from a dear young friend, a pastor, who has lately come out:

Merrill, Wis., Dec. 11, 1894.

Dear Brother Hahn: Sunday Dec. 9, the dear Lord delivered me from the last bands of sectism. Praise the Lord with me, for he is worthy to be praised for such deliverance! Hallelujah! The word of God is quickened, and the power and Spirit of God are pouring through my soul as never before. I never would have believed that such glory is hidden in the obedience to the word in 2 Tim. 2:19-21. Glory to God and the Lamb for time and eternity! Dear brother, spare not to preach the word with divine unction, for it redeems from sin, world and all the loads of Satan, and I see that sectism is one of heaviest and strongest chains that he binds about the children of God. May the Lord also give me that hallowed firmness, not to spare.

Fred Sckwieger.

Was very much blessed by the Trumpet of Dec. 6, especially the article on the New Jerusalem. Praise the Lord for the lightenment of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Fred L. Hahn.

To all the Saints, Greeting: It has been some time since I have written anything for the Trumpet. I refrain from it many times because of so many testimonies and articles from other dear ones that live so far away and do not have the privilege of seeing the Trumpet family and office and visiting them as I sometimes do, for which I give God all the glory. But I feel it my duty at the present time to drop a few lines in regard to the work in this part of the country where I have been of late. At the assembly meeting Bro. Lundy and I felt it the Father’s will that we should work together as co-laborers in the gospel again this winter, as the dear Lord did so wonderfully crown our labors with success last winter, for which we give God all the glory. Dear Brother Lundy left Michigan before the assembly meeting was over for the South where they so much need the gospel, and where we spent our winter last year in Tenn. and Ala.

I left my home, Allegan, Mich., Nov. 5, and at the time did realize what it meant in the Scripture to forsake all for Jesus: father, mother, houses and lands, and wife and child for the sake of the gospel, and this I know I have to do to be his disciple. My first stopping place was Danville, Ill. Oh, dear ones, how I did dread the work there at that place! to go into such a place of so much darkness, and that without any help of any other brethren, and had to go alone except the Lord with me, but found him a present help in every time of need, for he was with me in mighty power to do the work. And I also found that the Lord knew his own business best, and he did so wonderfully work things out to his glory in that place that all I seemed to have to do was to stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, although I kept at work in my weak way, and doing what the Lord showed me to do. There were a number of consecrations, for which we give God all the glory. Devilish spirits were rebuked and would go out foaming as they went, for it was so badly mixed that none but God could separate it, but it was separated in the name of the Lord, and a good church established upon the rock, which is Christ Jesus. There are three preachers more now added to God’s host for his church, and all are attending to their duties, dear Bro. Buckellew and Bro. Smutz and also Bro. Wigland, who are out on the fire line for God, and a good church built up for God in that place.

The church was set in order by acknowledging what God had already done, in the laying on of hands and ordaining dear Bro. Smutz as elder of the little church in Danville, which perhaps will reach thirty dear souls or upwards.

I left Danville on Nov. 17, in company with dear Bro. Buckellew and Davison for a place about twenty miles distant called Potomac. We found but very few there at that place that are standing firm for the Lord. We held meeting here about one week, which was a general seed sowing time. They were made to confess it is the truth, but were not ready to accept it in their hearts. We found many warm friends for the truth in that place among the sinful class of people. May God reward them with salvation for their kindness to us.

Saturady Nov. 25, we took our departure from Potomac for Danville once more in the name of the Lord and had one more precious meeting with the dear saints there. On Tuesday Nov. 27, we took train for Todd’s Points, in company with Bro. Davison and wife. Found dear Bro. Mast waiting for us at the depot, for which we praised the Lord, and he took us to his home. We found all well, and found a large meeting house in which to hold meetings. The rain put a stop to some of the meetings in the beginning, but soon the meeting went on with a good attendance, and the number kept increasing until the large house was filled with eager listeners; and such good order prevailed, which is a rare thing for that place. There were a number of consecrations at that place, and a good little church built up, for which we give God all the glory. On Sunday Dec. 9, we attended to the ordinance of baptism, after which we went to dear Bro. Masts and attended to the ordinance of the Lord’s house in washing of the saints’ feet and partaking of the Lord’s supper. Quite a number took part. From here we go to Carmi, Ill., the Lord willing. We ask the prayers of all the saints that we may be kept by the power of God doing his will.

J. L. Pike and W. A. Davison.

Dear Saints: I am saved and kept by the power of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to whom be glory, honor and power forever. I have been made clean by the word. I was in a most miserable condition, but I now give all glory to God that I am delivered, but not of all the effects and disease which sin brought upon my body, which only the great physician can cure. I believe the Lord will heal me. Pray for me, you who have the gift of faith. Your brother in Christ,

To the Gospel Trumpet: May much grace and peace be multiplied to you all. As this is my first testimony I can say by the grace of God that I am saved to night and kept by the wonderful power of God. Oh it is so glorious to follow in the footsteps of our dear Savior, and to be led by him in all things. Pray for me, my dear brothers and sisters in Christ, that I may be kept pure and low down at the feet of my Master, always under the blood, that I may do the will of my Father which is in leaven at all times, in all places, and under all circumstances. Dear Saints: I begun reading your paper some weeks ago, as my mother takes them. I at first thought they were queer, but I kept studying them and when I went to read one I took the Bible and sat down and looked up what was said, and I begin to see as I ought to see. For some time I have been going to different churches and am not satisfied with them. I want all of your prayers that I may come nearer to doing my Master’s will as I am very weak, and that I may see the way clearer and understand the right way better. But I have no drawback and know if I start to do as I should that my husband will follow. I want all of your prayers that I may have a lighter heart and not be a stumbling block to others.

I will write a little testimony. Much greeting and great peace be multiplied unto all the Trumpet readers. I am still praising God for an uttermost salvation. The Lord keeps me saved so sweet and fills me with the joy of salvation that is unspeakable and full of glory. Praise God for the abiding Comforter in my soul. The Lord is so good to me and keeps my body well. I have no pain of any kind, and the blessed light of the gospel of full salvation is shining in my soul more and more as I walk in the light, and in him is no darkness. The night is all driven from my spiritual sky by the glorious sunlight of the blessed gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Hallelujah! Oh, dear ones, let us be established in the grace of God. It will not do us any good to starve our souls by a mere profession and not live up to what we profess. Get settled in Christ the rock of our salvation. I find the grace of God will bring us where we can live holy and without blame before him in love. Christ said we must be holy, and without holiness no man shall see God. Praise God! it is natural for us to live holy and without blame before him in perfect love when all the elements of sin are destroyed out of our hearts. Praise God forever!

Dear Brethren in Christ, if I may have the pleasure of addressing you as such, for we are as yet strangers to each other, yet in confidence I write. I received a few tracts from your place, and find their sentiments are like unto my own convictions which I have had for a few years back. While living in Ohio I was saved, sanctified and healed during a holiness meeting, and was made consciously, without a doubt, a real member of the body of Christ. I joined the Methodist sect, and have felt from that time under a strange kind of bondage, which I could not account for until very recently I felt it must come from being yoked together with unbelievers. “How can two walk together except they agree?” or how can two being yoked together make any lead way while each are pulling in opposite directions? Now, brethren, I feel for myself I must come out from among them and be separate. I had gone so far as to accept the office of local preacher, thinking perhaps I would feel better satisfied, but only felt the greater condemnation. Beloved brethren, pray for me that I may be fully restored soul and body a lively member of Christ’s sacred body. Wife joins me in the same request for herself. Also pray for our children. Yours hungering,

O. N. Cripps.

Although the above accusations were false, they point plainly to the fact that their accusations were based upon a knowledge of such devils. That Christ speaks of the proselyte of the Pharisees as being two-fold more the child of hell than themselves, also conveys a vivid meaning when the Pharisaical practices, fasting, etc. are considered, that there are such cases to day needs no proof. Briefly, any one who follows after any lust until he is sold soul and body to his desires and cannot of himself abstain, he is possessed with lust devils. Maniacs are made so by setting up some idol in the heart, letting the whole mind and soul go out after it; losing the same by the judgments of God for idolatry; a poor devil-possessed maniac is the result. The asylums of pur land are sad reminders of this tendency of mankind.

Some one whom God has given a mind of great comprehensiveness, great retentive capacity pushes forward to the goal of great learning, forgets the God who created the giant intellect, pushes on when warned of God by a tired brain, aching limbs, and head; sees the phantom of fame

almost in his grasp, and something snaps — over study, softening of the brain. God’s warning rejected, Satan entered, captured the soul and crushed the mind, and the wreck remains. Let every one be careful how we worship intellect, mind, riches, loved ones, fame, or power. God will punish all such.

A list of persons who work by the power of Satan, some of whom are directly mentioned as being possessed with unclean spirits.

Deut. 18:10, 11. (1.) Diviners. Acts 16:16.
(2.) Observers of times.
(3) Enchanters.
(4.) Witches.
(5.) Charmers.
(6.) Consulters with familiar spirits. 1 Sam. 28:3-9.
(7.) Wizards. ” “ “
(8.) Necromancers.
Isa. 47:13. (9) Astrologers.
(10.) Stargazers, [gators.
(11.) Monthly prognosti-
(13.) Soothsayers.
Acts 13:6-8. (14.) Sorcerers.
“      19:13. (15) Exorcists.
Deut. 13:1. (16.) Dreamers.

NOTE. Many of the above are synonymous terms. See Webster’s dictionary, or Bible references. Many of these have changed their names to suit modern times, and are now known as mediums, no’s. 6, 7, 13, 14. Fortune-tellers, no’s. 1, 4, 6, 7, 9. 10. Clairvoyants, 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 13. Forecasters, same. Mind readers, second sight, 1, 3, 9, 12,13, 14. Faith doctors, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. 8, 14, 15. Those charmers, wizards, etc., who measure children for flesh decay as it is called, blow in children’s mouths for throat trouble, cause persons to pass under table legs for enlargement of liver (so called), or use such and other charms or enchantments far all diseases of man and beast, simply work by the power of Satan. Scripture plainly tells us that those who make this a profession are possessed with spirits of divination. Acts 16:16. Familiar spirits. 1 Sam. 28:3-9. Wizards, same, and from the fact that all the above named, and the list given, work by the unclean spirits that are in them.

That these persons actually remove affliction or cause the same to no longer effect persons is true. See lying signs. 2 Thes. 2:9. People have been inclined to laugh at these things as absurd, and have thought that there was nothing in such charms, enchantments, witcheries, etc., but the Bible plainly declares that the devil is in them.

In order for God to heal a person he must be given into God’s hands exclusively. Satan counterfeits these works of God and also requires the subject as a reward of his work. Have you had children measured or placed under any charm, then remember that Satan has that child bound. In Jesus’ name have hands laid on, and the prayer of faith offered for its delivery from Satan’s hands.

We cannot say at the present that all those who have been so healed are actually possessed with devils, but one thing is sure, they are all bound, and the spell must be broken in order for them to get saved. How can it be broken? Renounce the healing and the devil who did it; consecrate to go through any ordeal that may be necessary, and proceed to lay on hands, offering the prayer of faith, and commanding Satan in the name of Jesus to withdraw his power, or his agents as the case may manifest itself.

INSTANCES; — Many of the children of Wilshire, Ohio have been thus placed under incantations of witches, etc., and some are known to be possessed with devils. One case of a young person who has often consecrated with apparent earnestness, and never getting anything, has come to light and the fact that the party had been measured years ago has just come to hand. Another case of a child that has puzzled brethren who have been here (Wilshire, O.) is traced back to the same. Some of the professing saints here were also in the delusion, and even had been practicing the same; but confession, renouncing and consecration at the public altar, with united agreement and faith in God has delivered them. This is undoubtedly, the cause of much of the sleepiness in this place for years past. Those who have had children charmed for disease will have hands laid on for their deliverance. All are advised to take God’s way. Jas. 5:14.

OBSERVERS OF TIMES.

We wish to call attention to this class. Deut. 18:10. God commands that there shall be none of them found among the children of Israel, and consequently also among the people of God. To this class belong those who regard lucky and unlucky days, numbers, signs, etc; those who will not kill hogs or butcher in the dark or new moon; those who eat no meat on Friday, commence no work on certain days, plant potatoes on good Friday, and no other day, etc., with multitudes of other lucky and unlucky signs, finding horse shoes, spilling salt, seeing new moon over your shoulder, etc., etc. Now, brethren, the time has come for all to wake up to these things and renounce all such stuff as of the devil and get free. Refuse profane and old wives fables. 1 Tim. 4:7. To the law and to the testimony, if they speak not according to this word there is no light in them. Isa. 8:20. Walk by the same rule. Act by the same rule. Jas. 5:14. 1 Tim. 4:7. No man exercises, or can exercise faith unless he does so according to God’s word, and that does not recommend any signs or charms, etc.

We trust to be able to report farther as matters are investigated. It is believed that this is a wide spread evil, and as God commands us to be free from all works of darkness, let all saints examine themselves and see whether Satan has any such straps or bands on them. This matter has been bearing on us for some time and we feel that God will be glorified in this exposition as far as it goes. Pray for your saved brother,

Fred Husted.

IS GOD’S TRUTH TOO STRONG FOR YOU?

_____

If any person is not sufficiently enlightened upon the purity and divinity of God’s heavenly church, and upon his abhorrence of the abomination of schisms, heresies, to appreciate what has been written concerning the ignoring of heretical baptism remember we bind no person’s conscience. You follow on to know the Lord, and when you comprehend his present truth and mind in this matter it will be time enough to walk in the same. Then you will do it unto the Lord, and not unto men. The following objection has been sent us: ‘‘Would it not be well for those who have been married by sect preachers, and now lust after some other man or woman to ignore their marriage? If the baptism by a sect preacher was not right in the sight of God, then the marriage ceremony was not right.”

But, my friend, in such comparison you do greatly err. Baptism is an institution that is all of God, and the world has no jurisdiction over it at all, or anything pertaining to it. The command, its form of administration, and its administrator are all prescribed and commissioned of God. But it is vastly different with marriage. The institution is of God, he joins man and wife to leave all and cleave to each other. But as to the ceremony by which that union is made legal in the sight of the law, that is wholly man’s enactment. God’s word lays down no ceremony for marriage, nor does it point out who shall officiate in the legalization of the rite. The laws of the land have seen fit to empower magistrates and ministers to legalize the marriage rite, and it is al right that God’s people conform to this, first, because it conflicts with no Scripture legislation; second, because the Scriptures counsel us to be subject to the laws of the land. In short, the ordinances are divine both in the command and the administration. Marriage is only divine in the former. But its administration or legalization God has left to man’s leisglation.

THY TESTIMONIES ARE WONDERFUL.

Dear Saints of God: I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony for the first time. We are praising God for salvation. Blessed be the name of the Lord for sending us the true light. I belonged to the Baptist church about eight years and never knew what salvation was, but I do not belong to any sect now. I can claim the Lord for my Savior now. It is a great pleasure to me to read the Trumpet and hear of the good meetings they have. I wish we could attend some of them. I want the prayers of the saints that I may be healed of heart afflictions. I am trusting in God to heal me, and am willing to submit to any of God’s laws. Pray for us that we may let our light shine to the world. Your sister in much love,

Dollie Thomas.

Dear Saints of the Most High: I feel led this morning to write ray testimony to the Trumpet. I am glad that I can testify to the glory of God that I am saved from all sin and sanctified to do his will, and that I ever learned to trust in one who is able to save and keep me from sin amid all the trials and temptations that the evil one may bring up before me. When I look back over my past life and see how unworthy I have been, I cannot praise him enough for bringing me out of so great darkness into this marvelous light and liberty of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I love to read the Trumpet very much. It finds a hearty welcome in our home. We would be glad to have some of God’s holy ministers who feel led of God to come here and hold a meeting. I have been afflicted most of the time for over three years. Pray that I may be entirely healed. James says the prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Pray that I may sink deeper into the will of God. Your sister in the love of Jesus,

Sylvia Montgomery.

I know that Jesus saves me just now, and keeps me from sin each day that I live. Glory to his excellent name forever! ‘‘I know I am walking in heaven’s own light, above this world of sin, with heart made pure and garments white, and Christ enthroned within.” I do praise God for the King’s highway that is cast up for the ransomed of the Lord, and whosoever will may come and walk thereon. Praise our God!

The Lord has done a good work at Henderson of late, many souls have been saved. The Lord has done much whereof we are truly glad. The work is still going on. Praise our God! Pray for us.

Dear Saints: I am gloriously saved and kept in his divine power day by day. Praise the Lord! My dear husband and I are living here alone in this deserted place, yet we do rejoice in a full and free salvation, and feel his sanctifying power to both soul and body. Glory be to God in the highest! and is the whole light of our salvation, and our heart’s desire is that we may so shine as to be of some use in the service of our Master. He has no idol members, and if we hearken to the voice of his divine Spirit he reveals his will and truths unto us, and oh the rich blessings there are in doing and fulfilling the will of our Lord, and experiencing his precious love daily.

As I have just been reading the Trumpet and seeing what glorious things have been done throughout the world by his divine power in saving souls, and how they have been sanctified and healed from all infirmities and diseases, etc., my heart was filled with exceeding joy and happiness to know and realize God is yesterday and to day and forever the same. I earnestly ask God to bless his workers that many souls may give themselves up to his tender care, and also to send some of his messengers here to this place, so full of false doctrine, sectism, etc. And I firmly believe he will, for his promises are to us, and “Whatsoever ye shall ask in my name that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” John. 14:13. Surely he means exactly what is written, and we also have proved him true to his promises. And let us not be deceived by any false doctrine or what any one says; but let us always stop and see what Jesus says, and if we are in earnest we will soon have our mind settled, however troubled it may be.

Dear saints, pray for me that I may sink deeper in the love and will of my Master, and always be willing to follow in his footsteps, that his name may be glorified through me, and I be enabled to set forth an example worthy of following. Your sister, sanctified in Christ,

Mrs. J. P. Rasmusen.
