Look unto Jesus.

Oh sinner look to Jesus,

__________

THE RIVER OF LIFE.

_____

THERE is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the Most High. — Psa. 46:4.

We find this same river spoken of in Rev. 22:1, 2. And he showed me a pure river of water of life (not death) clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and the Lamb. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the trees were for the healing of the nations.

This river is what I want to write about at this time. The question that comes to the mind is: What is this river? Where does it start? Where does it go, and what is it for?

1st. What is this river? Ans. The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. — Jno. 3: 63. Now this river proceeded out of the throne of God and the Lamb. Where and what is God’s throne? Ans. where God dwells and reigns. Where does he dwell? As God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. — 2 Cor. 6:16. So then God dwells in his people, and there he reigns, and they reign with him. Much more they which receive abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ. — Rom. 5:17. God’s word is his doctrine.

Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of mouth, my doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distill as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass: because I will publish the name of the Lord: ascribe ye greatness unto our God. — Deut. 32:1-3. Paul warned Timothy to take heed to the doctrine.—1 Tim. 4:16. And that the scripture is profitable for doctrine. — 2 Tim. 3:16. So we see that the word of God is called water (or as water) and doctrine. We see also that Apollos watered. — 1 Cor. 3:6. He could not water except by preaching the Word.

2d. Where does it start? As all streams have a head or starting point, so this river must have a head or starting point. Isa. 2:2, 3. — And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills: and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. This Jesus commanded before he left the earth. Luke 24:47. — And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Verse 49. But tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

A certain class of people have gone away from the fountain of living waters. The fountain is where the river starts. Jer. 17:13. — O Lord, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the Lord the fountain of living waters. Now we see what the river is, and where it starts, and what is its source, and now we want to see where it goes, and what it does where it flows.

Ezek. 47:1. — Afterward he brought me again unto the door of the house; and, behold, waters issued out from under the threshold of the house eastward: for the forefront of the house stood toward the east, and the waters came down from under the right side of the house, at the south side of the altar. Verse 2. — Then brought he me out on the way of the gate northward, and led me about the way without unto the utter gate by the way that looketh eastward; and, behold there ran out waters on the right side.

What is the house? Eph. 2:21. — In whom ye also are budded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. 1 Tim. 3:15. — But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. Heb. 3:6. — But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the cenfidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.

Now where does the river flow? and what for? Joel 3:18. — And it shall come to to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth out of the house of the Lord, and shall water the valley of Shittim. As this river flows through the valley of Shittim, and the shittim, or Acacia trees grow in that valley, the river flows through there to water the trees. The preaching of the word does that. Give a tree plenty of water and it will grow fast, and make a beautiful tree. So with the children of God, they grow fast and beautiful by the preaching of the word.

R. W. Swinburn.

__________

THE PROMISE OF HIS POWER.

_____

THE scriptures tell us of a time when God will pour out his Spirit upon his people, which was to take place in the last days of time, and the last days are those from the time of Christ, and prophecy is rapidly being fulfilled; and the time of the end is near at hand when the Lord will be seen coming in the clouds, declaring that time will be no more, and all will be changed in the “twinkling of an eye” at the last trump.

That which was spoken by the prophet Joel, has come to pass, wherein the Lord said, “I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: and on my servants and on my hand maidens will I pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy.” — Acts 2:17, 18.

In the last days also it was foretold that many should depart from the “faith once delivered to the saints,” and evil doers would wax worse and worse, and spiritual darkness, wars, and rumors of war, pestilence, famine, etc., reign throughout the land; but in the evening time the church shall receive her primitive power, and shine forth with the glory of God, and rivers of living water shall flow from those who believe on the Son of God; and his people shall be a “peculiar people, zealous of good works.” Thank God! that time has already come, and is now here. The great judgment day is near at hand, and the church — his bride — is arrayed in the glory of his power, ready to meet him at his coming.

RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Righteousness exalteth a nation but sin is a reproach to any people. Prov. 14:34.

IF righteousness exalts a nation, whence then cometh such a degenerated state, as our nation is in at present? And the Lord saith, because they have forsaken my law which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein; therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts the God of Israel; behold I will feed them even this people, with wormwood, and give them water of gall to drink. — Isa. 9:13, 15.

The reason the whole world is so engulfed in the abyss of darkness and sensuality is, they have ceased to obey the law of God which is his word, and have had no respect toward their divine and omniscient Creator; running after the imagination of their own heart, and that was only evil continually. Century after century, and year after year, step by step has this world sunk to such a degree of degradation, that when we wake from our slumbers, at the appearing of the blessed evening light, and shake the awful drowsiness off our souls, the realization of truth springs up before us and our very beings are filled with compassion, as we see our fellow creatures in gross darkness, bound by Satanic powers, and carried to a state of immorality, far below even the brute creation.

False teachers who have gotten into a compromise with Satan, tell us the world is getting better, and they fight against holiness or righteousness, the very vitality of an elevated nation, and contend for sin the element that is a reproach to all people. But praise the Lord, the saints of the Most High are possessing the kingdom. — Dan. 7:22. And this kingdom is righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. — Rom. 14:17. The breech is repaired, and the old paths (of righteousness) are restored. — Isa. 58:12. And judges as at the beginning. — Isa. 1:26. It is true in the sect confusion of the past, where there was so much ignorance, and superstition, and where the pure gospel was hid from the people, erroneous doctrines and practices were so imbibed into the minds and hearts, from generation to generation that at last the precious law of truth and freedom was almost entirely forsaken, and its ways were not considered.

God at times winked at such ignorance, and where there was no law sin was not imputed, to a great extent the people were excusable, for, knowing nothing but sin and that taught them, they could believe nothing better. But again now the Lord commands all men to repent, and says all souls are mine as the soul of the father, so also is the soul of the son, the soul that sinneth it shall die. — Eze. 18:4. No longer is this proverb to be used the fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the childrens teeth are set on edge. — 18:2, 3. For every one shall give account of himself to God. — Rom. 14:12.

As the truth is again being preached all will have an opportunity to hear and accept it, and whatever be the former teaching, if purity be rejected or neglected we ourselves will suffer, and our souls will be forever lost. Although we may disregard our former teaching and know the truth, if all before us were ignorant of it and be free from sin if our parents die there.

As we look into the perfect law of liberty, we find there a remedy to deliver us from all the works of Satan, sin, and disease, etc., by obeying the laws of of God and nature. The carnal mind is not subject to these laws, but Jesus came to destroy that out of every obedient person, and He always fulfills his mission. This is accomplished in entire sanctification. Now the old man out of our way we can begin to search the deep things of God. In the morning or apostolic days a gospel was preached that elevated all who believed it. It taught men to be obebient to the laws of God and nature. In the evening it is as the morning, so we have the same gospel to-day. The nations have degenerated and fallen to a miserable condition indeed, but God’s righteousness is raising up a nation, yea a strong nation.

And now I say to the saints and especially to the parents as you perceive that the moral atmosphere of this world is so corrupt and a stench to everything pure and holy and that there is such a state of dissipation, what are you doing to exalt this nation; this holy nation?

I must say in the name of Jesus if we do all to the glory of God, we and our posterity will not degenerate, but every generation will grow stronger, both spiritually and physically. To have spiritual strength we must have faith in God and to have power to exercise faith, we must have mental strength and where these bodies of ours are out of nature’s order and bound by disease, it effects our mental capacities to such a degree that it is almost impossible to exercise the faith in God that he would have us do. So to be a strong and holy nation we must have strong and holy bodies and keep them so. Just look at the diseases and complicated diseases, that have accumulated and borne down on the human race, all through disobedience to the divine laws and more than that, these diseases and evil practices are from generation to generation, transmitted to the innocent propagation. How often the child when ensnared by the devil and led into evil practices, feels in his heart that such are wrong, but no one advises him to leave off such ungodliness, and his youthful mind cannot comprehend the danger, until alas, the truth dawns upon him and he is left a physical wreck, and by sad experience he sees the result of his folly.

I once heard a conversation between a father and son, as they were speaking of the crime of masturbation and the son said, “Father, if you or any one in the world had told me what would be the termination of such sins, I would to-day be out of their grasp, but you now see the result. Oh may God make the saved parents especially to realize the responsibility, that rests upon them in this great reformation, and parents, while teaching your children to beware of such evils do not forget yourselves, for such carnal desires are hereditary, so keep thyself pure. Procreation is the divine will of God, but in the name of Jesus use your bodies to the glory of God, and before many generations we will be a strong nation indeed, physically, mentally, and spiritually. And such things must be observed before we reach complete and apostolic strength. Parents, be deliberate, be holy and teach the children the fear of God, and how to escape the pits of sin and dissipation. Perhaps timidity keeps many from doing what they know to be their duty in such cases. Dear ones remember God uses means to accomlish his purposes, and you are one of the means. As the gospel was dormant for years, so were these warnings, for they are part of the gospel. As the gospel comes again, so do these warnings. And we will cry aloud against all sin for it is carrying this world to dark despair and endless destruction. O the multitudes that will be brought before the judgment to account for millions of precious lives destroyed, through the practices of ante natal infanticide, and many other hideous crimes, that fill our souls with horror to think of. So lift up the trumpet and spare not, sound warnings with tongue and pen. When Jesus comes he will find a people undefiled, a holy people, and a strong people. Let us be among those, and Jesus will give us a glorious reception into the bright eternal home. These words have been written in the name of Jesus, for our good and his glory. Be strong in the Lord. Grace and peace be with you.

Good Hope, Miss.

My Dear Brethren and Sisters in Christ: I am going to write my testimony to show what I have been and what I am now. I have been a member of the Baptist creed, professing for forty years, and a deacon of the same, and also an unbeliever of sanctification in this life. But bless God I have learned better. As we are found in death, so we will be found in judgment. And if we die out of Christ, we will be forever lost, for we know there is no sin in heaven. And by the grace of God I am determined to live in the beauty of holiness. My desire is to grow in grace and the knowledge of the truth until I am made perfect in the blood of the Lamb, and that I may be sanctified both soul and body, and be blest with all spiritual and temporal blessings that our heavenly Father will give me. Brethren I do desire that the dear saints would pray for me that the Lord will cure me of my infirmities, and deliver me out of my troubles. I am living in a heathen land so far as holiness is concerned. But bless God, we get some sweet comfort out of the GOSPEL TRUMPET.

Your brother in Christ,

W. B. Ranshur.

__________

Remember, that God forgives the repenting sinner, and also the brother or sister who is overtaken and overthrown, when such heartily repent, confess and renounce their sin. And when we see the fruits of genuine repentance toward God, and faith in Christ Jesus, we also should do as God does, namely forgive and even forget the past and confirm our love to such. And this will we do in the name and Spirit of Christ Jesus. But if men professing to be God’s children, and especially ministers, commit sin, and get crooked and of the devil, we shall never acknowledge such as of God until they honestly confess their deeds, and condition and show the fruits of a true godly sorrow, and thorough repentance and reformation. Do what else they please, until they do this we shall not receive them as children of God. Though they give all they have to the cause of Christ, and go out to preach the gospel, and practice ever so much self-denial, they cannot by any such means buy the fellowship of God’s people. And as God is our witness we dare not use any partiality. We have no favorites. The Lord knoweth we would not swerve one hair for the dearest friend on earth. Therefore if any person who has sinned, does not receive our fellowship and endorsement in the Lord, set it down that we have not sufficiently seen the fruits of repentance and restoration. And, upon the other hand, if you know of any person who has been overtaken in a fault, and even fallen into sin, and you know that we have knowledge of that fact, if we afterward receive that brother or sister as in Christ, let not the devil tempt you to think we cover sin, but rest assured, we have done our duty, and that person has given evidence of true repentance and acceptance with God.

ARKANSAS CITY, KAN. CAMP MEETING.

This camp meeting to be held by the saints of God at the Harmen grove, Sept. 1st and continue as long as the Lord wills. This beautiful park is situated on the Walnut river. We hope the Lord will send Bro. Byers, Geo. Cole and Co., Sister Fink and all the ministers who spoke of coming, or whomsoever the Lord may lead. Now brethren do not fail to come, and come filled with the Holy Spirit ready to work for the rescue of perishing souls. Surely the pure gospel is needed to be preached in this city. Bro. Willis will be needed a week or ten days before the camp meeting to hold some street meetings and go to the houses and invite the people out to the meeting.

Now dear brethren in general who intend to attend this camp meeting, and especially to those who are here, can we for once sacrifice a little time to work for Jesus and the upbuilding of his kingdom? I am going to have faith with my works that God will build up a work here that all the powers of hell cannot shake. Brethren our labors here at this meeting in the future, will shine brighter than the noonday’s sun. We will be rewarded double for our works. All the brethren who have tents and bedding bring them. I hope many will come from far and near to help carry on the meeting. Those who come on the train can find conveyance on the street car from every depot to the park.

Geneva, Ind., July 17, 1893.

Dear Brethren and Trumpet Readers: God bless and keep you faithful in the cause of Christ. Amen. We arrived at Columbia City, Ind. in due time and commenced a meeting in the name of Jesus Christ, with good success, the Lord working with us to his own glory and the salvation of precious souls. There were about nine consecrations for sanctification, some of them having been first reclaimed from a backslidden state. There were three baptized near the close of the meeting, by Bro. Carter. As the Roanoke. Ind. meeting was recalled it gave us opportunity to visit other places where they desired meeting, and sow some good seed in the name of the Lord, which if watered in due time will we believe, bring forth fruit unto God. We are now holding meeting in Bro. Heart’s neighborhood, about four miles west of Geneva, Ind., where the truth is received by some, and rejected by others, the full result of which perhaps will not be ascertained until the judgment day. We expect to commence a meeting at Praise Chapel, near New Pitsburg, Ind. July 20, the Lord willing. Pray for us and that the work of the Lord may run and be glorified.

Your saved brethren, sanctified wholly,

A. J. Kilpatrick & Thos. Carter.

THE ORDINANCES.

_____

Drum Valley, Cal., April 30, 1893.

Dear Saints of God: I do feel led to write my testimony and also ask for a little information in regard to the ordinance of the Lord’s supper and feet washing. Will some brother or sister, that is led by the Holy Spirit and is learned in the Bible, please give us all the light they can in regard to these ordinances and if they are a duty? There is quite a number of God’s children here, but there are only a few that will take part in the ordinance of feet washing, and as we are not very well learned in the scriptures, we cannot convince them that it is a saint’s duty, although we ourselves feel that it is. Our testimony is that we are praising God for salvation that keeps us every moment of our lives. O praise the Lord for all his goodness. We are fully consecrated to the will of God. Pray for us, dear brothers and sisters, that we may ever be found faithful and ready to meet our Lord at his coming. Hoping to hear from some of the saints soon we remain

Your saved brother and sister in the Lord.

THE LORD’S SUPPER.

‘For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you. That the Lord Jesus, the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread: and, when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat; this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the New Testament in my blood: this do ye as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.” — 1 Cor. 11:23-25. In this text, Paul shows very plainly what constitutes the Lord’s supper. Namely: The bread, and the wine which symbolizes the body and the blood of the Lord. Not a word is said about anything else. This the apostle says he got from the Lord. Some sects of the Baptist family, seeing in the 13th chapter of John, that Jesus, the night of his betrayal, ate with his disciples, a supper served in dishes and being too blind to see in the word of God of what it consisted, conclude that the Lord’s supper consists of more than bread and wine. They see also that sop was one of the articles of food. So, they conclude they will kill a beef, and make a kettle of soup, and supper first upon that, and then partake of the bread and wine. Let us now see what the apostle Paul says to these poor blind people. “When ye come together, therefore, into one place, this is not to eat the Lord’s supper; For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper.” — 1 Cor. 11:20, 21. Is this not precisely the way these modern Corinthians do? Do they not eat first their own supper? Namely, the soup supper, and afterward the bread and wine which constitutes the Lord’s supper? The apostle goes on to say: “What! have ye not houses to eat and drink in? Or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that hath not? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you in this? I praise you not. — Ver. 22. And if any man hunger let him eat at home.” Ver. 34. These people in order to more perfectly establish their heresy, affirm that “the supper mentioned in the 13th chap. of John was not the Jewish passover, for it was eaten a day before the regular time to kill the passover.” This assertion is without New Testament backing, and contrary to its teaching. Notice the words of St. Mark: “And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, His disciples said unto him, where wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the passover? And he sendeth forth two of his disciples, and said unto them, go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him. And wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the good man of the house: The Master saith, where is the guest chamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? And he shall show you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us. And his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover. And in the evening he cometh with the twelve: and as they sat and did eat, Jesus said: Verily I say unto you, one of you which eateth with me shall betray me.” — Mark 14:12-18. This was the same evening that Jesus exemplified and commanded the eating and drinking of the bread and wine, and was betrayed of Judas. See verses 22-52. No one reading these scriptures can fail to see that the supper Jesus ate with his disciples the night of his betrayal, was the passover, except he be too ignorant to comprehend plain English. This passover was a lamb of the first year, roast in the fire, to be eaten with unleavened bread and bitter herbs, the evening of the 14th day of the first month in every year by every Jewish family, except when the lamb was too large for one family, when it was to be divided between two families. See Exod. 12:1-24. Jesus therefore in keeping this feast, considered himself and the twelve as one family. The sop mentioned in Jno. 13:26, 27 was unleavened bread dipped in the broth of a lamb procured by roasting it in the fire. The Jewish passover was antityped by the crucifixion of Christ our passover, 1 Cor. 5:7, and occupies no place in the New Testament. Therefore the Lord’s supper includes the bread and wine only. * * *

FEET WASHING.

In the 13th chap, of St. John, we read that Jesus laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. After that, he poureth water into a basin, and began to wash his disciples feet, and to wipe them with the to we wherewith he was girded. Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? Jesus answered and said unto him: what I do, thou knowest not now: but thou shalt know hereafter. Peter saith unto him, thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him: If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was sat down again, he said unto them, know ye what have done to you? Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. If I then your Lord and Master have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. Vers. 4-9-12-15. The above is so plain that any teachable man or woman can see in it that feet washing is an ordinance of the New Testament. Some affirm that it belonged to the Old, but Jesus’ words to Peter in ver. 7 shows the contrary to be true. He said: “What I do, thou knowest not now, but thou shalt know hereafter” Peter was a Jew, and had this been an Old Testament ordinance he would have known all about it. Besides the Old Testament nowhere gives account of such a practice. In every instance recorded, the individual washed his own feet. See Gen. 18:4; 19:2; 24:32; Ex. 30:19. 21; 40:31; 2 Sam. 11:8. While this ordinance is the washing of one another’s feet. See ver. 14. Another objection offered by some is, that “Jesus did not enjoin this practice upon us as a Christian duty.” God pity the one whose eyes are so blinded by the god of this world, that he cannot see a duty when Jesus binds it with OUGHT and SHOULD, two of the strongest words in the English language. See ver. 14, 15. Webster says, “both these words imply obligation, * * * SHOULD denotes an obligation of propriety, expedience, etc.; OUGHT denotes an obligation of duty.” If this does not show a duty in Jno. 13:14, 15, there is none in the Bible. The apostle Jno. says: Beloved, if God so loved us, we OUGHT also to love one another.” — 1 Jno. 4:11. James says: “Go to now, ye that say to-day, or to-morrow, we will go into such a city, and continue there a year and buy, and sell, and get gain: For that ye OUGHT to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.” — James 4:13, 15. Everybody acknowledges a duty in these texts; but when we turn to John and find the same language applied to the ordinance of feet washing, man cries out: “Nonessential! Nonessential!” O shame on such people! Let all who think the word OUGHT is not binding turn to Matt. 25:14-30, and see what became of the man who neglected to do what he OUGHT to have done. The ordinance of feet washing was practiced in the primitive church (see 1 Tim. 5:9, 10) and is in vogue still. And we observe it, and Jesus verifies unto us the words in Jno. 13:17: “If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.”

Besides these three ordinances there are two other scriptural commands, which, though not classified by common use as ordinances, are nevertheless enjoined in the word of God, and which, because generally neglected, we also here set forth; namely, the holy kiss, and the lifting up of holy hands.

MT. ZION.

_____

GLORIOUS things are spoken of ther, O city of God. Psa. 87:3. We find when we get saved of God, with an everlasting salvation, that eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit. For the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. God’s word says, Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth is Mount Zion.

Some might ask how is it situated? In the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established in the top of the mountains and it shall be exalted above the hills. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be removed and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea. Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the Most High. God is in the midst of her. She shall not be moved. God shall help her and that right early. For the Lord hath chosen Zion. He hath desired it for his habitation. This is my rest forever; here will I dwell, for I have desired it. I will abundantly bless her provisions, I will satisfy her poor with bread, I will clothe her priests with salvation and her saints shall shout aloud for joy.

Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God. Awake, awake, put on thy strength, O Zion, put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city, for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean. Isa. 52:1. Ye are come unto Mt. Zion and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem and to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the judge of all, and to spirits of just men made perfect. Heb. 12:22, 23. And there shall be a highway for the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria; like as it was to Israel in the day that he came up out of the land of Egypt. Isa. 11:16. And in that day thou shalt say, O Lord, I will praise thee: though thou wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me. Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid: for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation. Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the well of salvation. And in that day ye shall say, praise the Lord, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted. Sing unto the Lord; for he hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth. Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee. Isa. 12.

Therefore thus saith the Lord God of hosts, O my people that dwellest in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian: he shall smite thee with a rod, and shall lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt. Isa. 10:24. Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him. For with him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the Lord our God to help us, and to fight our battles. 2 Chron. 32:7, 8. No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord. Isa. 54:17.

For the Lord taketh pleasure in his people, he will beautify the meek with salvation. Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds. Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two- edged sword in their hand; to execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people: to bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron. To execute upon them the judgments written: this honor have all his saints. Praise ye the Lord. Psa. 149:49.

Dear Saints of God. I feel led this morning to write a few lines and you will bear with me. I do Jove to read the book on Divine Healing; it brings tears to my eyes to read the testimonies of so many being so wonderfully healed both soul and body. I have had some Gospel Trumpets sent to me which l love dearly to read. Oh how precious are all the promises of the blessed Savior. I read my Bible and pray, yet it seems as though my faith is too weak to grasp those precious promises. I try to cast myself all on the altar, yet some way I do not feel altogether satisfied. I want you dear saints to pray earnestly for me that I may receive my Saviour in my heart and that I may be adopted truly in the family of God; it is my earnest desire. May God bless you all.

It gave me a better chance to study God’s word while lying in bed. God showed me wonderful things for which I give God all the glory, and I am trusting him all the time and realize that I am healed. I have been walking around on crutches for some time, and my hands and arms became paralyzed so I could hardly help myself. But God has healed me by the laying on of hands. Praise God! AND SATAN CAME ALSO.

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them. Job 1:6.

Truly in these last days souls are in peril on every hand, while the devil is going about “as a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.” It seems that every possible way is used to deceive souls and hinder the work of the Lord. And for this reason the children of God should be loyal to the Word and give no place to heretics and deceivers. We are instructed in the Word to use every possible means to rescue the lost and perishing, and in so doing God’s messengers are duty bound to expose such as persist in their wholesale work of deceiving souls.

For the sake of the salvation of souls we feel it a duty to warn the people against one J. W. Wyrick, of Geneva, Ill., who is going about pouring out his venom in various communities and with his slimy spirit trying to turn many away from the truth and injure the cause of Christ, by reporting base lies against God’s ministers. He is also guilty of using the U. S. mail in sending out his scurrilous writings, on postal-cards to post masters, urging them to read and distribute the same. We here give the postal law on the matter, that post masters, as well as such instigators of unrighteousness may know the penalty of such, and we admonish all who have thus aided in hindering souls, to repent, lest they receive the penalty of Matt. 25:41.

See. 3. That all matter otherwise mailable by law, upon the envelope or outside cover or wrapper of which, or any postal card upon which, any delineations, epithets, terms or language of an indecent, lewd lacivious obscene, libelous, scurrilous, defamatory, or threatening character, or calculated by the terms or manner or style of display and obviously intend to reflect injuriously upon the character or conduct of another may be written or printed, or otherwise impressed or apparent, are hereby declared non- mailable matter, and shall not be conveyed in the mails, nor delivered from any post office, nor by any letter-carrier, and shall be withdrawn from the mails under such regulations as the Postmaster-General shall prescribe; and any person who shall knowingly deposit, or cause to be deposited, for mailing or delivery, anything declared by this section to be non-mailable matter, and any person who shall knowingly take the same or cause the same to be taken from the mails, for the purpose of circulating or disposing of, or of aiding in the circulation or disposition of the same, shall, for each and every offense, upon conviction hereof, be lined not more than five thousand dollars, or imprisoned at hard labor not more than five years, or both, at the discretion of the court.

– Chap. … Postal Laws

Some time age this man wrote to a post master in Ohio, a postal card of a slanderous nature and false reports against some of the brethren in the ministry, telling the P. M. to read and hand to others, which was done, laying both parties liable to fine and imprisonment. The same has been done in other places. At Reddick, Ill. he was not satisfied with sending such reports, but appeared in person at the meeting to foam out venom there, but the Lord over-ruled such work and exposed the dark spirit of the man. In the last few years this man has gone under-several different names, as many who know him can testify. We also have letters from him, wherein he tries to pass for another person by signing some other name. At one time he wrote us, signing his own name and made the statement that, if he knew God would forgive a willful murderer, three of the ministers whom he named would be lying in their graves and he a murderer. And in the same letter he told about how he could leap and shout praises to God.

Can you wonder that we feel like warning souls against such pernicious spirits? May the Lord help all who value their souls, to seek no fellowship with any such persons.

E. E. Byrum.

Dear Saints of God: We closed meeting here last night. A glorious work was done at this place. We held the meeting in the sect house, and in the midst of the battle they closed the house against the pure gospel, but thank God the people did receive the word. Souls were saved and sanctified, and God has a prosperous church now at this place. Bro. Warner, Dillon, Hunter, and their Co. arrived here on the fourth of July, and the Lord did use them mightily in the street meeting. There were large crowds in the street with perfect order. I never was in a city before where the people received the pure word so well, and most every one seems so kind to us. Now the church wants a tabernacle meeting here in September, and we believe there will be a great many saved. Baptismal services were held on Sunday; it was one of the most powerful meetings lever witnessed by the river. Praise God forever for his power. We go west from this city. Pray for us that may God direct us in all things.

East Liberty, O. July 10,—93.

Dear Brethren and Trumpet Readers: We are glad to report for Jesus, that we had victory in our last meeting in Darke Co., but we did not have victory until we executed the “judgements written,” upon some crooked and fanatical spirits. When this was done eight raised their hands for prayer, and the next day seven consecrated themselves to God; some for pardon and some for sanctification, and before the meeting closed three other consecrations were made. A part of this number came out of sectism. Some from methodism, and some from new-light-ism. A Methodist class-leader was one of the number. May God help them to be true in the integrity of their hearts, and stand on God’s word. Much and lasting good was done. Large crowds came out to hear the gospel, which they never did before. God help all who consecrated to go deeper down into God and his word and be “established in the present truth.” God bless the brethren and add to their number such as shall be saved. Bro. John Obry was left to administer baptism as we came to this place on account of previous appointment.

May the Lord bless all the dear brethren in Christ: This memorial day, thirty years ago at Helena Arkansas, I went into battle at 5 o’clock A. M.; with forty rounds of cartridges and no breakfast, where was fought a desperate hard fight of carnal warfare and bloodshed. Thirty years ago to-day, July 4th it was a war of bloodshed, but now thanks be to God, it is a different kind of war. Spiritual, not carnal. Hallelujah! O how the fire of love now burns in my soul today; such a different life I now live, and the happiest of all my past life. The Lord Jesus has now taken up his abode in this temple; old things have passed away; behold all things have become new. We have been here now nine days and nights holding forth the pure word of God; and it has been received by some in good honest hearts, and others are hungering after righteousness. Morning services 11 o’clock, A. M. It was a glorious feast to our souls. And we met again at S o’clock P. M.. Have good order and from fifty to sixty persons in regular attendance.

To all of God’s Dear Children: We are all well and joyful in glor. It has been some time since we sent in a report. But we have been very busy for the Master as quite a number of precious souls have been saved. The next place we held meeting after our last report was attended with good success. We kept no account, but a goodly number were saved, and most of them went on unto perfection. Fourteen were buried with Christ by baptism. Also we had a precious ordinance meeting; over 30 took part. From there we went 3 miles farther and held another meeting. It was mostly seed sowing. Then we went 6 miles the opposite direction, and held another meeting in a schoolhouse for nearly two weeks. Bro. Philips from Kansas came with his tabernacle and it was pitched in a mile of that place, and the dear Lord has given us precious meetings. The first, last Sabbath and the fourth, we had meeting all day, souls at the altar, most every time the call was made, and consecrations yesterday and last night, most of them received what they came for. Nine followed the Savior in baptism yestaday afternoon and came out of the water shouting the high praises of God. We close here to-night and go from here to Guthrie 25 miles distant to hold meeting. It is a new place. Pray much for us.

Yours in Christ sanctified and kept.

Beloved Saints and Friends: May the abundance of peace and glory be multiplied unto you all. Two years ago we desired to visit Wisconsin, and the Lord has at last opened the way for us to visit this state. Meeting begun here the 23d ult., and the work is moving on gloriously here. The blessed truth of Christ is taking deep root and strong hold among the people, many of whom are being won over to and convinced of this glorious way, and accepting the truths of God. The first week of the meeting the attendance was indeed small; and the interest very poor because of the shyness and the timidity of the people toward us, but we held on to God by a firm faith and the spirit of God begun to move on them, so now the interest and attention in the meetings are good. We are now having our first experience in street meetings, I must say that they are blessed and owned of God. We hold them every evening, and have on an average a hundred to a congregation. Thus far there have been about twelve or thirteen consecrations, first for justification and most of these have gone on unto perfection, and been sanctified by the Spirit of God. Many under conviction and others are seeking, Truly the Lord went before us to this place and prepared a people for himself. Last week six were buried with Christ by baptism and came out of the water praising God for joy, and still the work is moving on in the spirit. The meeting will last this week, over next Sabbath. Yesterday we held five meetings including the street meeting. We are still receiving calls to hold meetings. We have an urgent call from Boise City, Idaho, saying, O do come and help us in the service of the Lord. We long in the Spirit to visit the dear ones there, and are praying God to open the way for us to go unto them. Pray earnestly for us and the work in the North-west. The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you all.

Dear Saints: We do not cease to give thanks to God tor the blessed privilege of attending the Grand Junction C. M. Praise God how wonderfully he is teaching us to hold still in his hands, neither are we able to move without his command. After leaving the camp-ground we felt led to go to my brother’s house at Jackson, Michigan. He had written us of the long illness of his daughter of eighteen, who had been sick nine months with the consumption, and was expecting her death at any time, Had been given up by five doctors, as a hopless case. We had looked the matter over carefully, the element of sectism that we must meet, and having only just made our escape from Babylon we felt more like staying with those who were stronger in the doctrines of Christ, but God pushed us out and we felt sure he would fortify us against every attack of the enemy. We do want you to praise God with us for victory. Amen, bless God forever! We began to fortify ourselves by preaching the blessed “Evening Light,” of full salvation, and healing for soul and body, the oneness of Christ’s body, and through rebuffs, and groans, and reproofs, we have held on to God for victory. In eight days the sick girl was reclaimed from a backslidden state. She professed to be all right when we went there. On the tenth day she asked to be anointed, and after fasting and prayer, we took her through the consecration. Some tests seemed severe; when we mentioned her medicines which she sometimes felt she could not live without, but she said yes to all, and in the name of Jesus Christ we anointed her with oil and laid hands on her telling her that according to her faith so it should be done. God has enabled her to sweetly trust and wait for his coming. She is holding on to Jesus for perfect deliverance. Pray for her that her faith be increased, and that God may get great glory through her healing in the salvation of many souls. We also desire you to pray God to lead us in the field of usefulness he would mark out. We are led to turn toward the Junction again, although, it seems a great trial of our faith in behalf of our family at home. Pray for us.

Yours in the one body.

Dear Saints: The dear Lord is wonderfully blessing us and keeping us by his power divine. Our souls are indeed joyful in glory. April 11th we took train from Nishnabotna, Mo. for Plattsmouth, Neb., where we joined Bro’s. Neff and Harrington in a meeting in that place, and found a people who were bound down by the enemy, and had never heard the pure gospel preached before. The hailstones of God’s truth swept away the refuge of lies, and quite a number confessed that although they had belonged to a sect, they had never known anything about salvation. There were quite a number who got saved, others were not willing to pay the price and therefore were left to their own ways. We met with one old lady who had been living a Christain life for forty years outside of sectism. When she heard the word of God she was able more fully to discern the body of Christ, and said the light shown as clear as day, and now she could see why the Lord had never permitted her to join a sect.

From here we took train for Langdon, Mo. April 26, and had two very precious meetings with the saints, but on account of the rain we had to close the meeting. May 2d. we came to Nisnnabotna and continued with the saints over Sunday. The Lord blessed his truth, and the saints were edified. After the eleven o’clock meeting, Sunday, twelve were buried with the Lord in baptism. From here we returned home and remained a few weeks. June 18th we went to Fortescue, Mo. where we had three services and four dear souls followed the Lord in the ordinance of baptism. We have visited the saints at different places since, and have quite a number of calls for meeting, but have not sufficient means to purchase a tabernacle. We have not yet received all the money that was promised at the Robinson C. M. Those who promised please send in your offering at once, also as many others as feel led.

We have a tabernacle in view, the price of it is $110.00.

We have located, at Craig, Mo., which will be our permanent address. Anyone wishing to correspond with us address us at that place. Anyone sending money for tabernacle, send either to A. A. Kinzie, Craig, Mo., or J. F. Howell, Nishnabotna, Mo. Pray much for us.

Dear Trumpet Readers, Greeting: May the dear Lord bless you all. We are glad to report victory in the name of Jesus. From the Grand Junction camp meeting we wended our way to Center Point, Linn Co., Ia., June 24 and began meeting in the name of the Lord in the Congregational building, where crowds of earnest listeners were present night after night. Truly it was wonderful how the dear people drank down the word of God as it was preached in its purity. There were about eleven or twelve consecrations; most all for pardon. The Congregational people had no priest or preacher in charge, so God had his way. One of the deacons and his wife made their escape and the other one was wonderfully wrought upon by the Spirit of God. We pray that he may walk in the light. He with many others threw open their doors to us. God bless the dear people of Center Point. It is a small place, but God wonderfully shook it up. One poor soul said that if we would leave secret societies alone we would be more successful and we said, yes, if we would cease to cry out against sin we would have many followers, but the word of God teaches us to cry aloud and spare not and lift up our voice like a trumpet, and by the grace of God we will blow the trumpet in Zion and let the people hear that our God reigneth. Hallelujah!

The M. E. preacher was present during some of the meetings. He had just returned from the World’s Fair. Although we did not know he was present, yet God knew he was and judgment went forth with power and authority, for truly God did let the unction rest on his handmaidens and to him be all the glory. We visited from house to house with tracts, sang and prayed, had street meeting which were owned of the Lord by his presence. There is a dear little church there that will need teaching and help in going on to perfection. We trust God will shortly send some of his ministers there. Cannot Bro. J. W. Byers make them a visit for a few days? Meeting closed the 11th. We left at eight in the evening and changed cars at Columbus Junction at near midnight, where we had the privilege of telling some souls about Jesus, and sang a few precious songs of Zion, while the R. R. men, who are a class of men so seldom spoken to about Jesus, looked and listened as though some unseen power had taken hold on them. We then gave some tracts, remembering, blessed are they who sow beside all waters. We arrived here safely and will begin meeting to-night in the name of the Lord. The saints have rented a cloth tabernacle 30×60. Let all the saints pray for us and the work here. Dear Bro. and Sister Bunn are still with us attending the meeting.

Faithfully yours in the gospel,

Lena L. Shoffner, Birdie E. Fink & Co.

Dear Saints of God: I feel led of the Spirit to say that I am living for the Lord, and for him alone; and feel strengthened each day both soul and body. Praise the Lord, he keeps me free from all sin by his all saving power. I am so glad that Bro’s Lundy and Carter came here to preach the truth. My spiritual eyes were opened. Bless the name of Jesus! He brought me out of darkness, and I saw the true light. Glory to God, for he doeth all things well. I had been trying for many years to be a Christian, sometimes would think that I was a child of God; but yet I felt there was something lacking. When the blessed light shone, I then could see that it was the second work of grace that was wanting. I then determined to do the whole will of God and bowed in as humble a manner as I knew how at the feet of Jesus, and begged him to look in pity on me. I had always felt the cross a heavy burden. Satan was ever ready to drag down, but now, glory to His holy name! the cross is none too heavy. Friends may forsake, people may say what they will. By the grace of God I am determined to follow my Savior.

He has made straight paths for our feet. He is the light of the world and they who follow him shall not walk in darkness but shall walk with him in white. Praise the Lord, we have the blessed promise, As many as are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. I have sweet peace in my soul. I do pray that many dear souls may yet get their eyes opened and come out of darkness into light.

Your sister in Christ,

Naomi McCarley.
