PHILIPPIANS 5:20.

_____

O talk to me of heaven
My soul is sick of earth;
Of idle conversation,
An hollow, giddy mirth.
I long to hear of Jesus,
I thirst for living streams;
My soul is faint with hunger,
It haunts my very dreams.

O let me feel thy presence,
My living, loving Lord;
Give faith to grasp each promise
That greets me in thy word.
I perish from starvation,
I pine for angel’s food;
Earth’s best is flat and tasteless,
In thee alone is good.

The blessed tongue of Canaan
Is speech I long to hear;
And Zion’s songs the sweetest
..hat fall on listening ear.
O talk to me of heaven,
Earth hath no charm for me;
By Jesus I was ransomed,
His blood doth set me free.

O talk to me of heaven,
Naught else hath power to please;
For naught can chain the fancy
As glorious themes like these,
Then let us speak of Jesus
Instead of things of earth;
Whose evanescent beauty
Betrays their mortal birth.

We have his sacred promise
That soon he’ll come again,
In clouds with wondrous glory,
Angelic hosts in train.
For this my soul is waiting
And watching day by day,
Unceasingly rejoicing,
And praying while I may.

O talk to me of heaven,
And sing to me of home;
For I’m a heart-sick stranger,
A pilgrim born to roam.
But earth will sometime vanish,
Its skies roll like a scroll,
And melody entrancing
Burst on the raptured soul.

Then talk of joys celestial,
Earth’s cares and trials o’er;
The transport and the glory,
The ever nearing shore.
Yes, talk to me of heaven,
Naught with it can compare,
For interest and sweetness —
Would God we all were there.

But now we’ve reached the Canaan
The heaven to the soul;
By faith our eyes are lifted
And see the heavenly goal.
The soul is tilled with rapture,
Without a weight of sin;
And as we near the heavenly shore,
All’s peace and joy within.

__________

BAPTISM.

_____

HAVING been requested to give a Bible definition of the word baptize, the mode of baptism, the object or the purpose of the ordinance, which I have done, I now send a few similar thoughts to the GOSPEL TRUMPET for publication. There have a goodly number of such articles appeared in the Trumpet in the past, but as the paper is rapidly circulating, many of its readers have not had this subject set before them. The following definition does not cover the corrupt apostate use of the word, but its entire usage as found in the word of God:

BAPTIZE (verb. Denotes action, and the action determines the mode and means.) — to immerse, to dip, to induct into. But as this word is used much in an accommodative sense, I will give an accommodative meaning; viz., to bring under a pervading influence of. The former three are plain English synonyms of the englicized word baptize, and really cover its, entire use, both direct and comprehensive.

The mode is clearly understood by the definition; but “buried * * * by baptism,” Rom. 6:4, confirms the definition. And in the context, ver. 3, 5, two similar acts are brought to our view; (viz., the literal act of baptizing, and the burial and resurrection of Christ) to teach the same spiritual truth; viz., death to sin, and resurrection to walk in newness of life. Burial is understood as Christ was buried before his resurrection. The similarity of these two acts also determines the mode, and baptism being a burial settles it beyond all contradiction, and entirely leaves out sprinkling, pouring, etc.

Now we take up the object or purpose of baptism as a New Testament ordinance.

1st. It is an ordinance of divine service; see Heb. 9:1; context, 8:13, and Matt. 28:19.

2d. This ordinance came from heaven. See Matt. 21:25; Jno. 3:27, and 1:33.

3d. It was introduced by John the Baptist. Mark 1:1-6.; Matt. 3d chapter, and 21:25; Luke 7:29. Christ practiced this ordinance, Jno. 3:25- 30, and 4:1, 2, but changed its object, leaving the mode the same. John only labored to prepare the way, Matt. 3:3; Luke 1:76; Isa. 40:3; Mal. 3:1; while Christ shouldered up the whole government, Isa. 9:6, and became the author of eternal salvation. Heb. 5:9 having obtained eternal redemtion for us. Heb. 9:12.

A question arose between John’s disciples and the Jews, and they said unto John, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth and all men come to him. Jno. 3:25, 26. Hear the conclusion: “He must increase, but I must decrease.” — Jno. 3:30. What was the object of John’s baptism? Ans. — And I knew not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with [in] water. — Jno — Jno. 1:31. John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is on Christ Jesus. — Acts 19:4. Under John’s ministry he that was baptized should believe on Christ. Acts 19:4. Under Christ’s ministry he that believeth in Christ should be baptized. Mark 16:16. Christ must increase, but John decrease. Jno. 3:30. And when they heard this they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. — Acts 19:5. The object of baptism being changed it was necessary to baptize them again The object of John’s baptism, as has been noticed, was to make Christ manifest to Israel. This being accomplished, John 3:26; Matt. 3:13-17, it was necessary to give the ordinance a new object, or to discontinue its observance.

Now we will notice its new object or its purpose during the gospel dispensation. Go ye, therefore, and teach all nations [or make disciples, or Christians of all nations] baptizing them. — Matt. 28:19. He that believeth and is baptized. — Mark 16:16. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized. — Acts 2:41. But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ they were baptized, both men and women. — Acts 8:12. And Philip said, If thou believest with all thy heart, thou mayest; and he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, * * * and he baptized him. — Acts 8:37, 38. Can any man [anti-ordinance or not] forbid water that these should not be baptized which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. — Acts 10:47, 48. Many of the Corinthians hearing, believed and were baptized. — Acts 18:8. This is sufficient proof that none but believers are eligible to participate in this ordinance.

Next we will give the experience of Bible believers. Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God. — 1 Jno. 5:1. He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life. — Jno. 3:36. Whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. — Acts 10:43. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. — Rom. 10:10. Sins remitted by faith. Rom. 3:25. Justified by faith. Rom. 3:28, and 5:1. All the children of God by faith. Gal. 3:26. But as many as received him to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believed on his name. — Jno. 1:12.

Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God. — Jno. 5:1. What is the standard of the experience of one born of God? Ans. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin. — 1 Jno. 3:9. We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not. — 1 Jno. 5:18. They love God, 1 Jno. 4:19, and keep his commandments, Jno. 14:21, 23, 24, and bear fruit, Jno. 15:2. Then baptism is not in order to, but because of, the remission of sins. — Acts 2:38. Hence the object is plain; viz., because of the remission of sins; and baptism being a burial, we bury the dead. For by the cross of Christ we are crucified unto the world and the world unto us [ready for burial]. — Gal. 6:14. Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we being dead to sins should live unto righteousness. — 1 Pet. 2:24. Hence the doctrine of baptism is death to sins and life unto righteousness. Consequently a sinner cannot fill the description, for by the act he would say he was dead unto sins, when facts declare he is living in sins. Baptism inducts the believer into the water and not into the church. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body. (Not by the preacher nor by the congregation but by the one Spirit). It is true many sects make baptism an aqueous door into their sects, but this is perverting the ordinance. Christ is the door. It does not commend the believer to the fellowship of the church of God. The believer has fellowship with the entire body the church, by the Spirit. — Phil. 2:1; 1 Jno. 1:6, 7. Fellowship is of the Spirit, and exists between all that have the Spirit of God. This ordinance has never been transfered from the body to a sect, but it belongs to the body the church as a whole. Any organism that excludes a child of God, or does not include them all; or that includes any person that is not a child of God, is not the church of God, but a sect. And God’s church is not composed of sects but living members of men and women. — Rom. 12:4, 5; 1 Cor. 12:18, 27; 1 Pet. 2:5. Baptism does not wash away sins really but metaphorically. — Acts. 22:16. The real washing away of sins is the washing of regeneration. — Tit. 3:5; Rev. 1:5. Those who are born of the Spirit need no comment on this point. Therefore baptism is salvation in a figure, 1 Pet. 3:21, while salvation in substance is death to sins and induction into Christ. We may add three scriptures to prove baptism a command. First, in the commission, Matt. 28:19. Second, Acts 2:38. And third, Acts 10:48. If any one doubts Peter’s authority, read Matt. 16:19.

Conclusion. If ye love me keep my commandments; and I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever. — Jno. 14:15, 16. If ye know these things happy are ye if ye do them. — Jno. 13:17. Amen.

HOW striking is the picture of the last judgment presented in the 25th chap, of Matt.! How it should lead us to examine ourselves to see if we are likely to stand the test and hear the “Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world,” or whether “depart from me” will be the words to us, because “Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.” Let us note the words, did it not to one of the least.” God would teach us that the least are not beneath his notice, and should not be beneath ours; and to help and encourage in every possible way each toiling pilgrim on the highway of life, is what Christ demands of every one who has named his name and professes to follow him.

We see around us each day the lonely hearts to cherish,” the weary souls who indeed will perish unless they are led to him who alone can give them rest, and save with an everlasting salvation; and yet the masses of people move on, careless, indifferent to the sighs and groans of suffering, fallen humanity, never embracing the opportunity of doing the little things, which might seem great to the one for whom they were performed; never lifting a burden from shoulders just ready to sink beneath their weight; thinking only of self; living only for self, yet professing to be a follower of Him who spent and gave his life for others, going forward to meet that day when the verdict rendered sentence will be pronounced perchance vastly different from that anticipated. While opportunity presents, while we mingle with the sorrowing ones of earth, may we realize the truth of the poet’s words, that

“The world is fall of sighs, —
Full of sad and weeping eyes.”

And not only in the strength of God “help our fallen brother rise,” and be ever watching for an opportunity to do something even for the least of them for whom Christ died, and whom the king delights to call his brethren, remembering that it is the little things that make life joyous or sad. Waste no time in judging how the good will be received; whether the favors will be appreciated, or the seed bring forth an abundant or scanty harvest. That is a matter between the ones we seek to help and God. But renew the smiles that have faded; wipe the tears that are falling; bear the little burdens, which may prevent the greater ones, knowing

That the seeds of good we sow,
Both in shade and shine will grow;
And will keep our hearts aglow
While the days are going by.

And when the last one has gone by and we stand in the presence of the Judge of all the earth “Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me,” will not be said to us.

TESTIMONIES.

Thy Testimonies are Wonderful.
Psa. 119:129.

__________

Pawnee, City, Neb.

Dear Saints: Grace be unto you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. I pray for you alway that God will keep you ready to do his holy will; as potter’s clay in his hands to be moulded by him who is the author of all perfection. As I grow in grace and in the knowledge of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, I find my only way to please God is to have implicit confidence in him, and not be governed by self in anything. May God keep all the saints as I would ask him to keep me. I pray that I may be a most humble servant in the work of my Master, ready to do whatever he has for me. By his grace and through a knowledge of his word I hope to be able to present the gospel to the world as God would have it preached. May God bless you all.

Your humble brother,

Harry J. Lambert.

_____

Dear Saints of God: I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony, that the world might know what precious things the Lord has done for his people. I am praising God this morning for full and free salvation. Glory to his dear name! I am so happy all the day long; I am sinking deeper and deeper down into his will each day. The dear Lord has wonderfully led me out of Babylon, and has healed my body several times, he healed me when all earthly physicians had given me up. They said I could not be cured, but praise the dear Lord, the great Physician healed me both soul and body. I was afflicted about three years. For eighteen months I was very helpless most of the time. Tongue cannot express the peace and joy I have in my soul. I am dead to this world and its pleasures. What I once loved I now hate, and what I hated I now love. Oh, how anxious I am to see precious souls saved! I am praying God to send some of his holy ministers here to preach the evening light that souls might be saved. Your saved and sanctified sister,

Mrs. Matt Heller.

Dear Saints: I feel it my duty and exalted privilege to write you my experience and glorify the Lord Jesus Christ for what he has done for me, that God may be glorified in him. I was justified through faith and received the witness of it through the Spirit in autumn of 1857 in the M. E. church, corner 5th and Brady St., Davenport, Ia.; and was sanctified at Laporte City, Blackhawk Co., Ia. in autumn of 1879. Called to preach the gospel the fourth time, I believe, at Spirit Lake, Dickinson Co., Ia. while putting down a well for B. C. R. & N. Railway Co., on the isthmus near Hotel Orleans, and then and there began to preach. March, 1883 on the 4th of July I ended a fast of three days and nights, and prayer, that I might conquer principalities, powers, and spiritual wickedness in high places. Then the commandment — the law — came, and sin revived and I died. And I commenced to observe Saturday as the Sabbath day. I was redeemed Sept. 29, 1891 here in Colo., and am no longer under the law, but under grace. And the blood of Jesus Christ the Son of the true and living God doth cleanse me from all sin and unrighteousness. I fully believe, and I have peace with God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Babylon is fallen, is fallen, Her priests, ministers, lawyers, doctors and scribes have taught the people rebellion, stubbornness, lies, deceit and robbery. Behold, behold, behold this, ye ministers and people that do the Lord’s pleasure, come out of her and be not a partaker of her plagues that shall come upon her. Make no delay.

From your friend and well wisher, a true and tried friend of the Lord Jesus Christ’s,

Azariah Moore.

P. S. I am ready to come or go anywhere and preach the gospel, by an experience and knowledge that I have received of the Lord.

DIVINE HEALING
—OF—
SOUL AND BODY.

A New Book,
—by—
E. E. BYRUM.

_____

This book is just fresh from the author’s pen, and a glance at the contents is enough to convince any one of its interest and value to those seeking a more thorough khowledge of the Divine Being, and his dealings with people at the present time, as well as in days past.

The first part of the book very plainly marks out the way from sin unto full salvation, according to the teaching of the sacred word.

It presents the gospel truth in such a way as to throw a gleam of light into the pathway of the sinner, and enable him to see that there is hope beyond, through the mercies of a blessed Redeemer.

The BELIEVER is led to see the beauties of full salvation, and the joys in a life of Christian perfection.

THE HEALING OF THE BODY

constitutes the second part of the book. This consists of twenty-six chapters on doctrinal subjects, exposing and overthrowing false ideas and theories concerning the healing power in these last days, showing when, how, and under what circumstances and conditions God heals the sick and afflicted at the present time.

It gives a history and testimonies of healing from the time of Abraham, through the different ages, up to the present time.

The third part of the book consists of the

WITNESSES OF TO DAY.

These are wonderful testimonies of persons who have been healed within the last few years by divine power; such as being instantly restored to sight after having been blind for years; the lame throw away their crutches; broken bones are instantly healed; invalids who have suffered for years immediately arise and walk, after the prayer of faith is offered, etc. The author is personally acquainted, with nearly all the parties who have herein given their testimonies, and gives their names and addresses in the book, so that persons doubting the truthfulness of the same can write to the parties themselves.

It will be a precious volume to those who are afflicted in either soul or body. The chapters on faith, and also other subjects, will strengthen the faith of the reader, and aid in a closer walk with Him who is the “giver of every good and perfect gift.”

It contains 248 good-sized pages; good, plain print, on heavy paper. Neatly bound in cloth, $ .75. Library (half morocco), marble edge, $1.10. Send two cent stamp for special terms to agents. Address,

LOVE, A NEW COMMANDMENT.

_____

“IF you love me keep my commandments.” He that hath my commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me. If ye keep my commandments ye shall abide in my love, even as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. This is my commandment that ye love one another as I have loved you. And hereby we do know that we know him. if we keep his commandments. And whatsoever we ask we receive of him because we keep his commandments and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. And this is his commandment, that we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

The first commandment is that we must repent and believe on the name of his Son, then we must love one another, as he gave us commandment. And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him and he in him, and hereby we know that he abideth in us by the Spirit which he hath given us. And this commandment have we from him. That he who loveth God love, his brother also. Glory be to God! Dearly beloved in the Lord, how can we help but love one another when love is of God! And if there is any other commandment it is briefly comprehended in this saying: namely, thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbor. Love is the fulfilling of the law. So love is the great commandment. Do you love Jesus? If you do, he says you shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him and will manifest myself to him. Owe no man anything, but to love one another, for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. For this reason love is the fulfilling of the law. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, against such there is no law; so love is the commandment which Jesus says, A new commandment I give unto you. that ye love one another as I have loved you. When do we know that we love one another? Why, when we pass from death unto life. How do we know that we love one another? By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments, and his commandments are not grievous. O dearly beloved, I do bless the dear Lord for the melting love of God in my soul for my brethren. If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar; for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? We have passed from death unto life because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. He that saith he is in the light and hateth his brother is in darkness even until now. He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is no occasion of stumbling in him. Let us not love in word, neither in tongue, but in deed and in truth. Let lore be without dissimulation. Glory be to the God of my salvation! The love that I have received in my soul prompts me to keep his commandments; for when you receive love you receive God; you receive a consuming fire, and the fire burns up all the dross and leaves us holy, harmless and separate from sinners, and gives us perfect liberty in our souls. It takes out all malice and guile, backbiting, envy, strife, hatred, selfishness, bigotry, and gives us a meek and humble spirit to obey God and do his will.

Your humble brother,

R. P. Gooding.

MUZZLE NOT THE OXEN.

“Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should five of the gospel.“ — l Cor. 9:14.

WHILE the command to God’s ministers is: “Go ye therefore,” it is the duty of the saints to help them to go. For we are laborers together with God. 1 Cor. 3:9. While we learn in 1 Pet. 5:2 that God’s ministers arc not to “feed the flock of God” for “filthy lucre,” we also learn by our text that they are to live by the gospel. If a man called of God to preach is kept out of the field a great portion of his time to support his family, who is to blame? We read in 1 Tim. 5:8, “But if any provide not for his own, and especially they of his own house, he hath denied the faith and is worse than an infidel.” Does not this scripture exempt those preachers from all blame that leave the gospel work go until they have provided for their families? As the gospel is to be preached in all the world, and there are so few at it, some one is certainly to blame in such cases. Is it not those who are able and do not support the minister’s family? If you desire to see souls saved and are not called to labor in the “word and doctrine” you can help the work on by giving to their support. “Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn.” — 1 Cor. 9:9.

“Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things.” — Gal. 6:6.

Undoubtedly all who feel called to preach should make Paul’s consecration if they have not already. He said he was willing “to spend and be spent” for his Corinthian brethren. Some that feel called to preach are staying at home trying to pay their debts and are stewards over real estate and personal property enough to pay their debts twice over. Such (if they are really called of God) ought to make Paul’s consecration, and sell property enough to settle their debts and get out in the field. Let all remember that no true child of God owns any property in this world. Luke 14:33. He is simply steward over it. And the time is coming when we will have to give an account of our stewardship. Now a steward has no right to dictate, but he must obey the dictates of the owner. And who is the owner? “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof; the world and they that dwell therein.” — Ps. 24:1. “Will a man rob God? yet ye have robbed me. But ye say. Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse; because ye have robbed me even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven and pour you out a blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it.” — Mal. 3:8-10.

While the tithe system passed away with the rest of the Jewish law, the earth still remains the Lord’s; and to fail to use property according to the dictates of his Spirit and word is robbing God. So. dearly beloved, let us “render unto God the things that are God’s.” “But whoso hath this world’s goods, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?” — 1 Jno. 3:17. This of course applies to all the poor saints, whether preachers, preachers’ families or others. So, dearly beloved, let us “render unto God the things that are God’s.”

Yours in the bonds of love,

B. F. Roe.

A FEW THOUGHTS.

_____

Sigourney, Ia.

Dear Saints of God: It is with much love and gratitude to God from whom all blessings flow that I write those few lines.

“Jesus keeps I know not be..,
In the shadow of the Highest
I am resting, hiding now.”

I have been greatly impressed this summer with two thoughts in regard to the work of the Master. First, charity is not rash: second, him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations. The strong shall support the weak. Christ, says, Be ye wise as serpents and harmless as doves. Paul tells Timothy, Study to show thyself a workman thoroughly approved unto God. O dear ones, how much does this mean to be a workman thoroughly approved unto God at all times! To be just where Christ can say of each act, Well done, etc. What a painful thing it would be if in our honest zeal by rashness or doubtful disputations, we through an error of our judgment would cause some poor weak babe for whom Christ died to become discouraged and turn back, thus robbing Christ of one of his royal diadems. Paul teaches us to have zeal according to knowledge. Let us consider these things carefully, ask God for his wisdom, lean not on our own understanding, and ever be careful that neither intentionally or unintentionally while we are gathering for him we do not scatter abroad.

Your saved brother in Christ, low at Jesus’ feet,

U. D. Todd.

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

__________

Wichita, Kan., Oct. 10, 1892.

Dear Saints: God bless you all everywhere in Christ Jesus. Praise his excellent name! I am well and filled with the precious fullness of God. Came back here Tuesday and found the brethren still holding forth the word of eternal life to the few hearers who could stop the rush for greed and vanity long enough to come to the place of gospel meetings. Bro. Whitfield preached daily on the streets to many interesting hearers. We enjoyed this precious privilege last Saturday, and was blessed in speaking to the people. All seemed to hear with interest, some with much concern, even with tears.

While we were in Mo. last week some were saved in the meetings, and three baptized. And a few more were saved since our return. Four at the altar last night. The meeting still continues. To day we start on our journey over the mountains. All pray God to bless our campaign to the sea.

We leave here quite a number who have received the pure truth, some in the city, others scattered about in the country. But the camp meeting did a great work even if no church had been established in this place. Dear Bro. Whitfield has declared himself out of everything but Jesus, and he is free in his soul. He expects to remain here some time. We should have said in our former report from here that Brother and Sister Smith and Bro. Houghton went to Cedar Vale; Kan. to labor in the Lord. We hope to hear of a good work there. Amen.

Dear Trumpet Readers: May the peace and blessings of our Lord Jesus Christ abide with you forever. Amen.

We arrived at Johnston, Sept. 29, in company with a number of dear saints. Meeting began the night of our arrival. Although much darkness existed, perfect victory and heavenly triumph reigned supreme over all the powers of the enemy. Our souls were filled with the glory of God. Praise his holy name forever! Bro’s Eldridge and Pike were much used of the Lord, and precious truths found access to hungry souls, convincing them of their lost condition. A precious ordinance meeting was held at Bro. Swanson’s residence, which proved to be a glorious pentecost. The cries of convicted souls rang through the house. A number of consecrations were made, for which we were made to rejoice with the angels in heaven. Dear saints from Battle Creek attended the meetings, also Sister Mary McCormick was with us. We are also glad to report that we are still saved, and reigning with Christ over all this world of sin.

Yours in Christ,

Birdie E. Fink, Lena L. Shoffner.

Dear Saints Of God: May the Lord richly bless you all for Jesus’ sake. Amen. Our last report was from the work at Thompson, Neb. From there we went to Gaskell, Kan. The Lord gave us victory at that place. Six or eight souls came out straight for God. This was partly the result of seed sown by Bro. and Sister Hewitt who have been preaching the truth there since early spring. God bless the little church there and keep it free and pure. From there we came to the Robinson camp meeting, after which we began meeting in Hiawatha. We met an awful wall of slander and prejudice here. People were afraid to come near the tent. Cries of Mormon, free love, etc. had gone before us. We begun in the name of Jesus and the people learned that we were not so terribly wicked as had been reported. Sectarian prejudice held out strong and did all in its power to oppose. We were told that fourteen different sects held forth in that small place of three thousand souls. One soul came out clear. A number are convinced of the truth. God help all who see the sin of sectism to get clear from all isms, fanaticism included. We are at this place to begin the battle in the name of Jesus. Let all the saints pray for the work here, for this is indeed a hard place.

Yours in the one body,

Dear Saints of God: The Lord bless and keep you all by his mighty power from all sin, and fill you with his Holy Spirit. Amen. Praise God, we are still in the field, with the victory in our souls this morning over all the works of darkness. We visited the saints at or near Nishnabotna, Mo. on the first Sabbath in Oct., and we had a glorious meeting in the name of Jesus. Five dear saints were buried with Christ in the solemn ordinance of baptism, and came forth from the water rejoicing and praising God for salvation. From thence we went to Milton, Mo., and met with the saints on Thursday night, and the Lord gave us the victory. There were four consecrations for full salvation, and they praised God for the work that he wrought in them in purifying their hearts. From thence we took our leave of the saints and went to Forest City, Mo., where Bro. McDaniel is holding meeting, and we were glad to find the work prospering in these parts. We preached Saturday night and Sabbath at 11 o’clock, and one dear soul came to the altar and made the consecration, and the Lord sanctified her wholly. We trust that the dear ones all may live true to God, and fight the good fight of faith. Amen.

I remain your humble brother in Jesus, saved and sanctified wholly.

Dearly Beloved Saints, Greeting: I am glad to report the work that has been done in the name of the Lord of late. I have been visiting the church in different places, and have found a goodly number of saved ones. On Sept. 18 held meeting at Belknap near the lake shore at Sister Fry’s. Had good attendance; one soul saved, and one sought a second work of grace. We all enjoyed a blessed season with the Lord. Sept. 25 was at Blendon. Bro. and Sister Tripp were with us. Had a refreshing time in the Lord. Sunday, Oct. 2, Bro. and Sister Tripp, my companion and I visited Johnstown, where a grove meeting was being held. Met some of the workers at that place, Bro. Eldridge, Sister Shoffner, Sister Fink, Sister McCormick. Was glad to see them all. Oct. 9 met the dear ones at Kalamazoo. Was glad to see them so zealous for God’s cause. We had a good meeting in the day time, and in the evening we listened to the word as Sister Fink presented it in might and in power. There were two consecrations in the evening, Bro. Knowles and daughter. Oh, may God bless and keep them saved. The church in Cheshire is in good working order as a whole, and well consecrated down to the Lord’s will in almost every line with but very few exceptions.

From your saved brother in Christ, separated unto the gospel,

To all the Saints, Greeting: Great grace and peace be yours, and victory through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. I am so glad and thankful to God that I can report perfect victory and salvation through him who loved us and gave himself for us. Praise the good Lord forever! Who keeps us in perfect peace who trust in him, and causeth us to triumph always. It seemed to please the Lord to send me to this part of his vineyard, after the meeting at Lewistown, O., which was very fruitful. Souls were saved at nearly every coming together. I came to Sidney and staid over Sabbath, and found that a glorious work had been done there during their last meeting. God bless the dear ones at that place, and keep them faithful is our prayer. On Tuesday the 4th I started southward, arrived safely at Hartsells on Wednesday, was conveyed out in the country in the neighborhood of the saints, had meeting the same night (being prayer meeting night). The Lord blessed us in teaching the people the way of salvation, although some knew it and were established in the present truth. I was truly glad to find a lively company of God’s people at that place. We had a precious season of rejoicing together. We also had meeting the next night; the Lord was with us in saving power. Praise his name! Two were added to the church by the Lord himself for which we give him glory and praise. On Friday I was conveyed a few miles farther east, where I met dear Bro. Lundy, whom the Lord has been using in doing a good work in this part. I expect to stay with him as long as the Lord wills, and we will, no doubt stay in the South the greater part of the winter; for truly the harvest is great and the laborers few in this part of the country especially. Many urgent calls for meeting, perishing souls hungering for the truth. There is a great famine in the South, not of bread, but of the word of the Lord. Let all saints pray for us, and the work in this country. ,

Yours and Christ’s, sanctified wholly.

Norman, Mo., Oct. 10, 1892.

Dear Saints, Greeting: We came to this place two weeks ago and began meeting in the name of Jesus. The powers of darkness were almost overwhelming, but we cried mightily to our God who always gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be his name! We found some that had been deceived into the anti-ordinance doctrine, and from that into almost every delusion of the devil, and have overthrown the faith of some; and under a cloak of religion, have led some poor unsuspecting souls (one at least) even into adultery. Oh, the horrible things that have been done, and the trouble that has followed and will follow! How true, they that will not receive the love of the truth, God will send them strong delusions that they may believe a lie and be damned. When will people learn to accept God’s word as truth? After we had laid hands on one for the deliverance from evil spirits and anti-ordinance delusions, the devil tried seven times in one night to overpower us. The struggle was so great that my own bodily strength was nearly exhausted; but praise God, we stood by faith, uncompromising, determined she should be delivered, still holding meetings until the victory came. O the glory of God that filled our souls, and the house! We had meeting almost all day; and the waves of glory and the mighty power of God did not cease to be manifest to all the people all that day, and to ourselves until next day. I had never realized the depths of salvation and perfected holiness as I did then for twenty-four hours. O praise God! Several were deeply convicted.

We moved the meeting then to the Hale school house, about three miles from there, and began battle in Jesus’ name. At first the pressure was great, but gradually the darkness gave way as we continued to pour out the truth upon the people. And Satan put impudence enough in them that had been exposed and told to their faces of their awful crimes, to come to the meeting and try to put on Christian before the people, trying to make it appear that we accepted them together with us as worshipers of God. But glory to Jesus! we rebuked the slimy devil, and God continued to give the word so scorching that it made them ill at ease. The Lord gave victory again on Sunday, and he did indeed spread a table for us in the presence of our. enemies. O glory to God! we had the best of the wine at the last of the feast. We go from here to day to the Highland school house to begin meeting. Who will come over and help us? We are only women, three of us in company, and we are where Satan’s seat is, but two or three there straight for God that we know of. Continue to pray for us and the work here, and may God’s richest blessings be with you all. Amen.

Dear Saints: I feel it my duty to witness for God once more through the GOSPEL TRUMPET. I do bless God this day for salvation in Jesus. And I am living to glorify him in my body and spirit which truly belong to him. Glory to his excellent name! I am truly trusting in him, the Mighty to save, and the strong to deliver. I read in Psa. 125, They that trust in the Lord shall be as Mt. Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth forever. As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the Lord is round about his people from henceforth even forever. O glory to God! I do know that he is with all those, that trust him. I know he is with me and blesses me, and so wonderfully floods my soul with his glory. I feel like starting out to tell it to the world around what a dear Savior I have found. I am willing to stay where he would have me stay, and go where he would have me go, so that I know that he leadeth me. I praise God that I was permitted to attend the Red Lion camp meeting, although there but a short time. O how I do love God, and I know he does love me! O praise the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.

The Lord is still with his little ones at Henderson, blessing their souls with rich showers of his grace. Glory to God for his wonderful works to the children of men! Some months ago I bought Bro. E. E. Byrum’s book on Divine Healing. I have read and re-read it, and I just feast upon it. Glory to God! it is food to my soul. I ask the prayers of all God’s little oues that I may ever be found walking in the King’s highway of holiness, serving him with a perfect heart and a willing mind. Amen.

AN EXPERIENCE.

_____

BELIEVING God desires me to give a little of my experience on the line of diet, therefore I write this to his glory and praise. In my early Christian experience, about nine years ago, I was suffering intensely with indigestion and other stomach ailments, so that a physician said I must take a course of treatment. But after a short trial of his remedies God showed me I was not acting wisely, and the medicine was poured out and my case given into the Great Physician’s care. He did wonderfully heal and keep me well for several years. Then very often I would have bilious attacks, and in each the Lord kindly manifested his healing power. But I wondered why I was not fully delivered from them. At this time my convictions were that I ought to eat like any one else free from digestive troubles. And if my life was to be one of home care surely I should enjoy earthly good, giving God praise for his blessings. Unconsciously I drifted into very careless habits, eating at any time I felt like it, and just as much as I wanted, not distinguishing between need and pleasing the palate. Indeed some pleasure was taken in preparing dishes which were only fit for that purpose; and when conscience remonstrated it was silenced by the thought that it seemed to be my lot to try to please my family in serving them. Still God bore with me, healing my afflictions and comforting me in my home cares. Then to the delight of my family my weight increased about thirty pounds. This only was a burden as I was not so strong, had less energy and ambition, and active labor was a hard task. After eating I felt great oppression, and often wished I had not eaten, but was so hungry surely it was right, wondering why God did not heal me of this affliction as of others.

When the articles on health appeared in the paper they were read carefully and went right home in self application. Saw I was overeating and adopted the two meal system, fasting before the Lord the third meal, which prevented the great longing for that meal, which I found was a false appetite caused by the uneasy condition of the digestive organs. In a short time a great change was apparent. I felt so free, so much more active in thought and motion, and oh, so much more spiritual. And had a consciousness of pleasing God in preparing food for our good instead of pleasure. I wonder now how I could have been so blind and forgetful of what I really knew from school study. Surely Satan used this wile to ensnare my soul and body, and but for the opportune teaching might have succeeded. Therefore I feel to praise God for giving me faithful teachers, and “esteem them highly in love for their works’ sake.

Now I can testify to the glory of God that I am free from all digestive disorders or disease. That appetite is under control. No eating between meals, and no longing for forbidden articles of food — those that cannot be used to the glory of God. Even my unsaved friends see the wisdom of my course of action and advise it to their friends who are troubled as I was. May this little testimony be blessed to the good of some soul is the earnest prayer of

Your saved sister, with victory through Jesus over all the powers of Satan, just now sanctified by the Holy Ghost,

Jennie C. Rutty.

EXPERIENCE OF SALVATION AND HEALING.

_____

Dear Trumpet Readers: As God has used the experience and lives of others to bring me into the light and liberty of the gospel, so may he use me in his own way to let the light from my life shine out into the hearts of other precious souls. Thus then he leads me to testify to the dealings of the Lord with me, it is done alone for his honor and glory.

When I was about fifteen years of age I was converted, and became a member of the Baptist church. I had a wonderful experience at that time, and was very happy in Christ’s love. All these past years from that time lived what I then supposed was a devoted Christian life, and I cannot remember an hour when I ever lost sight of a hope in Christ, but at times I felt drawings of the Spirit to launch out into consecrated service for Christ; but the things laid upon me to do seemed greater than I dare undertake, not knowing the blessedness of laying self aside and living only in Jesus. So in this way I repeatedly grieved the Spirit, and during this time I drifted along with the church, but tried so far as I had light to be an active member, and to be consistent in all my Christian obligations.

For about two years the Lord used me quite successfully in home mission work, but the last year, as I think of it now, seemed to have been almost a blank; and near its close I began in earnestness to search my heart to know if I was living in a way that was pleasing to God, and continually prayed, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my thoughts, and see if there be wicked ways in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” On New Year’s day 1891, I made this one new resolve, to walk in the path of obedience to Christ, and to seek his honor and glory in all that I do. But when I came to attempt to live this, as I was determined I would do faithfully before God, I found without a doubt that I was in trouble; and I became discouraged and was sick in both body and spirit. At this time the church was holding a series of meetings, but I was unfit for work. Nearly the first sermon extoled the beauty and nobleness of the Christian life; “Yes” I said, “but we don’t all possess what you represent it to be, but it is just what I longed for.” A few days later as we met in an afternoon meeting to pray especially for the descent of the Holy Spirit upon us, I knelt three times to try to offer prayer audibly for the fresh baptism that we desired, but it seemed as if my mouth was closed, and I could not pray. Again I asked myself, What can this mean, or why is God dealing with me thus? From this I went to a careful searching of my heart, applying the word here and there, and my conclusion was, I don’t wonder that I cannot offer up the fervent petition of the soul for the entrance of the Holy Spirit into my heart. First, I saw that my body was no fit temple for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and I had never been given “a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto the Lord.” Neither had I ever made a full consecration, laid all upon the altar. I had been holding so much of self in reserve, and still retained so much of the world in my heart and life.

For a little time I was sick and wretched. An old lingering ailment that I had suffered with for years aid me aside bodily, so that my burden seemed more than I could bear. At this time, very unexpectedly, a sweet Christian friend came in one afternoon (from another part of the state). Immediately after I had greeted her she said that the Lord had told her to come to see me, but did not give her the message she was to bring. I replied, “I believe that He has sent you to talk to me from the Word, and to pray with me. She read and talked to me how Christ was an able physician for both soul and body. The dear Lord gave me new light, and my soul feasted on his Word. After this we had prayer, and in humility of heart I then and there consecrated everything, all I knew, and all that he might thereafter reveal unto me. unto the Lord forever. Then the sister pled in my behalf, that God would accept the offering of myself unto him. and that he would touch my body and make it every whit whole. After her simple but fervent prayer in which we had been agreed, we arose from our little altar, which had been a very “Bethel” to my soul, and my body was free from all pain and suffering. But my mind was not wholly at rest, it was so different from all the teachings of my past life, and my faith did seem so little to grasp it all at once; but I continually offered up the prayer, “Lord help my unbelief, and grant me grace not to doubt thy power, nor let me dishonor thy name.” As an act of obedience to the faith I had, I then threw out the medicine I had been taking. While I asked God to cleanse and make well the body, I was also desirous that the chamber of my heart be thoroughly swept and garnished and made ready to receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. After this I was much in study and prayer, and it seemed as if the dawn of a new life was near, but I was not yet set at liberty spiritually, but was confident that my body was thoroughly healed.

The next week one evening in meeting the text seemed a message from God direct to me: “For he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with a robe of righteousness.” The following day near noon I was suddenly- taken with such a strange feeling; it nearly overpowered me, and I said to myself, I don’t know what ails me, but I will lie down a bit and I guess I shall soon overcome it, supposing that I was sick, yet up to this I had been so well and strong. I went to my room and suddenly I seemed unconscious to everything except to what was shown me. I saw myself set apart from the earth, and from all that I had ever loved that pertained to earth, and such a feeling of loneliness came over me, and I felt so utterly stripped of everything which I had loved and felt to be mine, that I seemed to comprehend the words of Jesus, when he said, “The foxes have holes, the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.” But it seemed as I looked back toward them that they all seemed so changed and of so little consequence, that I said, Can it be that these could stand in my way between me and Christ? And then I seemed to see my own worthlessness, and I looked even smaller than all the rest. As this passed by I saw only one form in the distance coming toward me, and at first I thought was the one who prayed for my healing, but as it came nearer I said, Not she but the form of one clothed with majesty, with power, and with healing. And as he drew near I saw him encircled in a long crimson “robe” as it had been dyed with blood, and I said, It is “the garment of salvation, and the robe of righteousness.” And as he neared my side he took one arm outstretched to put it around me, and said, “Will you wear this robe and follow me? Oh such love and sweetness as was in his voice, and that patient, pleading look! I shall never forget it. I looked at it longingly, but I said, “Lord I have no fitness for its comeliness.” He replied, “All the fitness you require is to feel your need of me.” This was all I saw or heard, but I got up feeling perfectly well, but lost to everything except to the reality of what had been shown me. I could not understand it, but I was calm, rested and free, every fetter seemed severed. I sat down and thought it over carefully, and said, “It is the Lord, and he is waiting my answer.” I felt that I must then decide as it had been shown me what the cost would be, I remembered my consecration vows, and I went to my closet, and on bended knee, I repeated, Yes Lord, I will wear the robe of Christ’s righteousness, and I solemnly renounced the world to leave all to follow him as his sanctified child. I realized that these were solemn vows, made to an almighty God, but I never knew before what it was to fully possess “The peace of God that passeth all understanding.” And this I know, that I have been as an emptied vessel, but also feel as if I had been graciously filled, emptied of self and the world, healed of disease, cleansed from sin, and filled with the fullness of Christ’s love.

“Long did I toil, and know no earthly rest;
Far did I rove and know no earthly home;
At last I sought them in his sheltering breast,
Who opens his arms and bids the weary come,
With him I found a home, a rest divine!
And I since then am his and he is mine.”

I had also asked the Father for a real, live baptism of the Holy Ghost. And just four weeks from the day of my healing while communing with the Lord I seemed to feel a going out of the last vestige of Satan’s power, and such a filling up of love that it seemed to reach out to everybody, and to cover everything, and all at once the room became filled with a radiance of light and glory, and the power of God seemed resting upon me, until I shouted “Glory! glory! glory!” And it seemed all I could contain and remain in the body. After this such a sweet tranquil calm rested upon me, the same voice like stilled the Gallilean waters in the tempest, had given the same command, “Peace, be still,” to my weary, tempest-tossed soul.

From this time on for about a year I was mostly alone with Jesus and with the Word. I at once sat down and wrote to my pastor, giving him my experience in full, and asked for his counsel and prayers, as I had never heard any one relate such dealings with them from the Lord, and had not been taught it from the pulpit, and felt that I must open my heart to some one, but he never mentioned it to me, and I felt such a separation between us, and when I went to church, I felt as if I was all alone, and forsaken, and despised by everyone. And the sermons were no food for me, and I would wish that I was at home with my Bible. And it was not long until I saw that I had to renounce sectarianism, for as I received the light upon the word I saw that it was not of God. I then wrote to the church clerk and told him to see that my name was cancelled from the church book, as I could no longer keep my covenant with them, and that I was satisfied to have it enrolled only in heaven. This brought the pastor to see me and he labored long and earnestly to convince me of my errror, but the Lord kept me firm in my conviction and I was willing to give it all up, but the privilege of meeting with them that had been so dear to me, and this nearly cost me all my soul was worth, to come out and separate myself from them. But the Lord was very patient with me, and I prayed earnestly that he would choose a people for me with whom I could worship. And in answer to that prayer he directed Brother Eldridge one day to come and talk with me, and soon after to my home to hold meetings and in this way I received the truth, accepted it, and was baptized by Bro. Dillon at the Tekonsha camp meeting.

To take this straight way has cost me nearly everything. Loved ones have chilled me with their coldness and rejected my testimony and called me fanatic over the subject of salvation and healing. But praise the Lord, I do know that I am saved, and that my body which was a perfect wreck of disease even to the misplacement of internal organs has been restored and perfectly healed. And to God be all the glory, for I have never tasted a drop of medicine since I took Jesus for my all and in all. Praise the dear Lord! I have found him sufficient for all things, and I am daily learning to bear the persecutions with patience as I hear Jesus say, “Whosoever will not deny himself and take up his cross is not worthy of me.” I praise him for the victory which he has given me. I praise him for my sweet confiding trust in his promises. Yes, I praise him for everything which has led me

to know his great love for lost sinners. I am trustingly abiding in the vine, and it has become my delight to know and do his will.

Dear Saints: I do praise the Savior to day for salvation full and free, and I can shout hallelujah, Jesus saves! Wonderful things we find in the book of God. Glory to his name! We know that heaven and earth shall pass away, but his word shall stand when the earth shall be dissolved with fervent heat. Oh, who shall stand in that day? Who shall stand on the sea of glass mingled with fire? The faithful ones who have remembered the commandments and kept them. The Shepherd knoweth his sheep, and a stranger they will not follow.

Your sister saved to the uttermost,

Dear Saints: As it has been some time since I wrote to the dear Trumpet readers, I feel it would be to the glory of God for me to write some.

I thank the Lord I have not backslidden. I am praising the dear Lord for keeping me saved, although I have trying times. It is so wonderful to have salvation and good health, Praise the Lord for his goodness to his people! “Many sorrows shall be to the wicked, but he that trusteth in the Lord, mercy shall compass him about. Be glad in the Lord and rejoice ye righteous, and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart” — Isa. 32:10, 11. The Lord’s teachings are glorious. Oh praise the Lord! This is a blessed way to live. I renounce Satan and all his works. I was one day very self-willed and know that while I loved my Savior, truly I failed to see and know my duty as I should. I was young, and the world with its pleasures invited me to enjoy myself. Selfishness looked out of most that I did and vanity clothed my charities with alluring drapery. But praise the Lord, I got out of that. He gave me strength; he gave me comfort; he helped me search my heart and know my duty and place. I am saved and washed in the blood of the Lamb. All around me is sin; but just to illustrate, we need not go to the show because some one buys us a ticket and says, Let’s attend. Pray for me.

Your sister,

Kenton, Ohio.

Dear Brethren and Sisters in Christ: May the richest of God’s joys and grace rest upon you all for the sake of Jesus. Amen. Having no other way of testifying to the saints we feel like testifying to you through the Trumpet. We have moved to this town and there are no saints closer than fourteen miles, but we find that the grace that God has promised is sufficient to keep us, and as soon as circumstances will permit we expect by the help of the Lord to have the pure gospel preached here as it has not been taught in this town. We feel confident that God has a remnant in Kenton. On Sept. 22, I was taken with a hard chill which was followed by a very high fever, which lasted thirty-six hours. I had all symptoms of typhoid fever. This was Wednesday, and on Friday the police was coming to see me and make me have a doctor (but I had one all the time). But Friday the Lord had me up and able to go up town. There was a great deal of talk about me, some came in to question me concerning my faith. I testified to them that I had taken God for my physician for nearly four years.

Well we are saved and trusting God for all things. If any of the saints go through or change cars at Kenton, we would be glad to have them stop with us, at cor. R. R. and Wayne St., opposite creamery.
