Our Only Refuge.

_____

Thou art our only refuge, Lord,
We trust Thy mighty arm;
In Thee, the Clefted Rock, we hide,
Secure from all alarm.

Into Thy name the righteous flee
And safely there abide;
And though the power of sin abound,
No evil can betide.

Lord Jesus, help us trust Thy word;
To Thee we firmly cling;
Oh! shield us from the storms of life,
By Thy Almighty wing.

Oh! keep us from the strife of tongues;
Uphold us by Thy hand;
Forever keep us bound to Thee
By Love’s unyielding band.

Low at Thy sacred feet we bow,
Confess Thee Lord of all,
Acknowledge our own helplessness,
And for Thy grace we call.

When Satan’s fiery darts are hurled,
Be Thou, O Lord, our shield;
And as we fight the fight of faith,
Help us Thy sword to wield.

Our humble sacrifice we bring,
And on Thy altar lie;
Ourself and life we consecrate;
To all this world we die.

Tune Thou our hearts with grateful praise;
Teach us Thy holy will;
Our soul and body, mind, our all,
Now with Thy Spirit fill.

Inspire our life to holiness,
Humility and love;
Let hope and faith our portion be,
And wisdom from above.

Henceforth for Thee, in Thee we live,
Yea, Lord, to Thee alone,
To share on earth a life of bliss,
And glory ’rouud Thy throne.

W. J. Henry.

GOD’S ARMY.

_____

WHAT does it mean? Well, we look around about us in the nation in which we dwell, and see several classes. First we see are the volunteers, who only have the uniform on for a short while; then we have the regular army, the real soldiers who when they joined had to leave all and give up, so that their lives would be given up to their country, and stand and defend it at any cost. Dear ones, that is the class that God is calling out to be soldiers for him. Have you not heard the call, “If any man come to me, and hate not his father and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple; and whosoever doth not bear his cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.” “So likewise whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.” No person can misunderstand that call and say they did not know they had to give up this and give up that. They have to give up all; they will have to strip of every thing of this world before God will allow them to enter his barracks, where he will try them and fit them with the whole armor, before sending them out to fight.

But how is it so many souls find themselves only volunteers instead of real soldiers of God? It is because they have strayed into the wrong barracks; for there are hundreds of these sectish drill houses scattered about on the hills, and in these you cannot get on the whole armor of God, for it is in the command of men and not God. Dear oner, these are perilous times, and if you are going to stand, you will have to get on the whole armor, and get in the right barracks. I hear some cry, “Oh where can I find the barracks?” Thus saith the Lord; but in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established in the tops of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills, and people shall flow into it; and many nations shall come and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob, and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths. For the law shall go forth out of Zion, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. Now dear ones, the door of this house is Jesus Christ, so you see to pass through this door you must leave all behind, and when you have passed the door you become a child of God. That is your rightful name, and it is against God to take upon you a sectish name; but it is your privilege to go on unto perfection and present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto God, who will sanctity the gift, who then will entrust you with the armor, which consists of a girdle of truth, and a breastplate of of righteousness, and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, which will prevent you from sliding, and a shield of faith, also a helmet of salvation, and lastly, the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, and you will have to use it right and left; for the word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Then receiving the power from God you are sent to fight the good fight of faith, to lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called.

Now being sent out, what have we to contend for and defend? We have to contend for the faith which was once delivered to the saints, and we must stand fast in one Spirit, with one mind, striving together for the faith of the gospel; for Satan knows these are the last days and he is just raking the pit to contend against the saints; for he is at the head of all division. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places; that is, sectish drill houses, that are established on the hills. Their rulers step out to do battle in the name of their god, and wave their banner with the motto, “You cannot live without sin,” over their heads. But they have so many commands and so many orders from the Baal priests, that they cannot see eye to eye; so all is confusion, and their ranks are completely broken up when they are compelled to meet the sword of God. For God has said, his soldiers shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways; and they shall not break their ranks. — Joel 2:7. So you see God’s soldiers see eye to eye; they are all one; so it is impossible to break their ranks. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God, to the pulling down of strongholds, casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. — 2 Cor. 10:4. 5. So you see dear ones, God never loses a battle. So we must press the battle against all obstacles that Satan can bring to bear down upon us. But endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. Never mind the scoffs and jeers of your friends, and the persecution of sectish professors. For what glory is it if when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? But if when ye do well and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. For even hereunto were ye called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us example that ye should follow his steps. — 1 Peter 2:20, 21. Then as true soldiers let us follow all the way; for thus saith the Lord unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours but God’s. So it does not matter what great multitude Satan brings to bear down upon us; and although they look black and fierce, God has said, fear not their faces; and knowing the mighty power of our Commander, we stand firm. Although the whole world of darkness comedown upon us, they cannot break the ranks of God’s soldiers who have on the whole armor of God.

Now we read and hear of the army of the nation falling short of supplies, and being harassed and distressed through the want of the same, when on the forward march. But glory be to God, his soldiers never want, for he has promised to furnish all supplies. Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? Who planteth a vineyard and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock and eateth not of the milk of the flock? — 1 Cor. 9:7. But my God shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. — Phil. 4:19.

Well comrades, with these faithful promises we should endure all hardness for Christ’s sake. And some of the dear ones who are defending the faith ip foreign fields have found how true to his promise is our Commander. He has said, I will never leave thee nor forsake thee. Now if any of God’s soldiers have received orders for foreign fields, get on the armor and take the sword, and march in the name of the Lord, for he has to do a mighty work through you. For thus saith the Lord; and I will utter my judgments against them, touching all their wickedness, who have forsaken me and burned incense unto other gods, and worshipped the work of their hands. Thou therefore gird up thy loins, and arise and speak unto them all I command thee before them. For behold I have made thee this day a defenced city and an iron pillar and brazen walls, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, and against the people of the land. And they shall fight against thee, but they snail not prevail against thee; for I am with thee, saith the Lord, to deliver thee. — Jer. 1:16-19. When in the world, how many we have met who have received their discharge from active service, their time being up, and how many leaders in the hills are lying down at their ease, being discharged from duty by their division as worn out; is it so in God’s army? No. For thus saith the Lord, The oath which he sware to our father Abraham, that he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all the days our life. — Luke 1:73, 74. Praise God! no worn-outs in God’s army; no discharge, but a commission to press the battle to the end. Now to get out of God’s army we should have to desert and flee back to the enemy’s camp among the hills, and become a lost soul. And the children of Israel cried unto the Lord saying, we have sinned against thee, both because we have forsaken our God, and also served Baalim. — Judges 10:10.

Keep on the whole armor; do not lay any part aside; for just as you do the enemy will try and persuade you to break your covenant with God and desert, and the penalty of a deserter is death. But those that stand firm and fight for the faith will receive God’s promises. These are some of them. And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that has left house and brethren or sister or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for my sake and the gospel’s, but he shall receive a hundred fold, now in this time, houses and brethren and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the world to come eternal life. — Mark. 10:29, 30. But as it is written, Eye hath not seen nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. — 1 Cor. 2:9. I have fought a good fight; I have finished my course; I have kept the faith; henceforth there is laid up for me, a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. So you see what a wonderful bounty God’s soldiers receive, that keep faithful till the end, fighting under the banner with the motto, “Holiness to the Lord.” From your brother in the army.

S. E. London, Eng., Sept. 1, 1894.

Dear Bro. Warner: God bless you. I have felt for some time like writing to you of the work here. I have canvassed the city pretty well in the name of the Lord, going from mission to mission, only to be rejected when sectism was spoken against. Even people who claimed to be nonsectarians. Baxter’s little sect, head and all rejected me bitterly, and warned people against me. For months I went about seeking a people of God, rejected and despised of all men. Yet I did not lessen my zeal and courage for the work of God without any result seemingly; because I had no means to do anything, yet God most wonderfully supplied the means for our support in a marvelous way, when we knew of no friend on earth to look to, but trusted in God. There might have been much done before this could we have had means to secure a place to gather the people together. Some have been saved and accepted the truth but now are gone. We have only received $10.00 from America since we have been in England this last time. Praise God! the Lord has provided and we have paid four shillings per week, and had something to eat all the time for eight months in this wicked city among strangers.

Our experience here would be a history indeed were it written. Praise God! Some two months ago I fell in with some men claiming holiness, unsectarian, etc. I attended their meetings and was received gladly, and the Lord did most wonderfully bless me in talking to them, and they rejoiced greatly in it until I got to talking of the ordinances, Divine healing, etc. when they rejected and began to shut me off. Then God began to stir in my soul terribly. I got up and rebuked them in their own meeting, and the result was the meeting was captured for God, and we have been holding here ever since, and several have accepted the truth and got saved. All glory to God!

I then began to go to mission halls and God did wonderfully pour out his truth and glory on the people, and some accepted, but they began to rage vehemently. One place near here they accepted the preaching of the Word, and the interest and crowd began to increase, and the work revive, and some began to see they were not saved, and the leader, with a puffed sectarian heart turned against me, and I stopped there and went to another. The Lord still pouring forth his precious truth, the people accepted holiness, which they did not believe before. One dear man of the mission, a professor for years, saw he was not saved, confessed it publicly and got saved with a real experience.

A man fell and hurt his shoulder and for about a week could not use it. I visited him and God healed him, and he instantly raised his arm which was restored. All glory to God! It won them to the truth. The beast powers were so strong and the openings so great, I felt I needed help, and I wrote for Lena to come, and she came and God is moving things gloriously here in London. There are several calls and opening now. We cannot meet all. We have meetings here Tuesday and Thursday evening, and Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday evenings at the mission. A grand work is being done.

Saturday eve I have Bible reading in a very popular part called the Gardens. They requested it so they could get light on holiness, etc. Monday eve at a mission hall in a very busy part, Peckham R’d, by invitation. The workers there are out of sectism and believe in holiness, divine healing and unity of God’s people.

A few days ago I recieved a letter from a man at Stratford, East London, about seven or eight miles from here wanting me to come, as soon as I can and preach, but I cannot now leave the work here. I received the addresses of two or three other missions where we hope God will do a work in calling his people out. Southern London seems to be very ripe for harvest.

LATER.

Sept. 4, 1894.

Sunday night, wife and I went to Peckham to the hall and God did wonderfully bless the meeting. Quite an interest was manifest. The mission workers are much delighted and encouraged. Pray much for us and the work. Sister Lena is going on with the work here, and I am going from mission to mission hunting for God’s sheep. God is wonderfully providing for us. He has furnished us a home here that we do not have to pay rent nor buy anything to eat only as we wish to. Also, he has furnished us with clothing. I received a letter last night with five dollars. I feel God wants me to learn French and perhaps go through France and open the work. I do feel a desire to hasten to India as soon as possible. I would love to see my children, but I do not feel I can come now. I desire to follow the Lord. It will require some means to go anywhere. Well I am praising him for complete victory. Pray for us. Yours saved.

Dear Saints of God: I do praise dear Jesus for so great salvation. I am sweetly saved and wholly sanctified, and am kept by his mighty power. “Many shall be purified, made white and tried.” Praise Jesus! Every trial just sinks me deeper into Jesus, and makes me feel and know my need of him, and that without him we can do nothing. It is a constant stream of blessings flowing down from above since dear Jesus has sanctified my nature. I ask the prayers of all the saints that I may ever stand firm for Jesus. Your brother in the one body,

Eugene Crow.

The Christian Sabbath.

_____

This new book is now ready to send out. It contains nearly two hundred pages. It is a very thorough investigation of the whole subject, of the law, and its obligations, the Seventh- day Sabbath, its object and terminus at the cross. Late refugees and reasonings of Adventism are exposed. The perfect law of Christ is vindicated, and the first day proved by prophecy, shadows, history and the New Testament, the Lord’s day, and Sabbath of the Christian dispensation. Upon the one hand it masses an extensive and invincible array of Bible and historic proof; on the other hand it sets on fire and consumes a large heap of legalistic rubbish. It is virtually a new work, and for the merciful deliverance of all who possibly can be brought out of the dark pit of legalism, and materialism, as well as the rescue of others who are exposed to the soul-destroying snare. It is offered at the low price of 10 cts. per copy, $1.00 Per doz.

ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS.

_____

  1. “In the fall of man is he totally depraved? And in obtaining salvation must he have the seed of God planted in the soul? or is the seed of God left in the soul, and when the evil is destroyed in the man the good will develop into a child of God?

  2. Is it wrong for a child of God to attend a fourth of July celebration?

A. Willis.

Ans. to 1st. The phrase, “totally depraved,” not being in the Bible, is undefined by the Bible. Therefore people attach vastly different ideas to it, and whether man is or is not totally depraved depends upon what is included in the terms. We deem it best not to use the language at all, but describe the condition of fallen man in scriptural terms. In obtaining salvation must the seed of God be planted in man? Ans. “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but incorruptible, by the word of God.” The word is the seed which produces the new life. That is not something inherited in man, but it is the truth that comes from heaven, and is planted in the heart. Salvation, or to become a child of God, is not the result of the growth of good after the destruction of the evil out of man. Were that the case salvation were only a negative work, the removal of evil out of the heart. But in both regeneration and entire sanctification there is both a negative and a positive work of God, the removal of sins and sin, and the infusion of life and holiness. If sin were only a disease its purging would leave the soul to develop into a child of God. But sin has already put to death the sinner. The extraction of the fatal disease from a corpse would not leave the body to develop into health. Nay, it is dead, and a positive miracle can alone restore it to life. So is the sinner dead in trespasses and sins, and the removal of the cause of his spiritual death cannot restore him to life. A positive miracle must take place, the infusion of life from God through our Lord Jesus. Spiritual life is therefore not a development, but a new creation. “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works.” “New born babes desiring the sincere milk of the word grow thereby,” but it is the new birth that makes him a child of God, and not the growth.

Ans. to 2d. A true child of God has no inclination to go to such places which are gathered and infused by the spirit of the world, neither does the scripture uphold a Christian in mingling with such worldly gatherings since we are “chosen out of the world,” and not of the world, even as Christ is not of the world. For a professed Christian to be found at such places is a testimony that he loves the world, and in such the love of the Father does not dwell. Hence to be seen there is a contradiction to his testimony that he loves God.

A CONFESSION.

Mc Grath, Mo.

To all the Dear Trumpet Readers and Saints of God Everywhere: I want to state to the glory of God in justice to his cause, and in behalf of my salvation, and that of others, what the dear Lord has recently done for me. Praise his dear name forever! I attended the camp meeting at this place held by Bro. Bolds and Co. in which the power of God was wonderfully manifested, reclaiming backsliders, coverting sinners and sanctifying believers. My eyes were open to the fact that God had rejected me. I now confess I had a free love spirit, a spirit of adultery. Oh how I do praise God this morning for deliverance from the awful powers of hell! The evil spirit had led me to speak evil of Bro. Warner, and other saints of God, also to false letter writing.

When God showed me my condition. I went in secret to pray, but had no spirit of prayer. I sought repentance and found no place of repentance. I began to examine myself by the Word, and God unfolded my inner life as I never had seen it before. I had an absorbing desire to pray but could not. I seemed to be left alone. I saw that I had been resting on a delusive hope that I was saved. I was being led captive by an almost irresistible influence. I had but one hope, that was in the prayers of the saints. God pity the poor souls who are in the deadly coils of this awful delusion.

Glory to God he has set me free! The devil was cast out in answer to prayer. I was allowed to repent and the Lord in mercy saved my soul. I am in his hands to day to do his will from this time forever more. I ask the forgiveness of all I have wronged, and I earnestly ask the prayers of all God’s saints that I may be enabled to walk in all the will of God.

J. W. Sickles,

Lebanon, O.

NOTE.

I met the above brother at a camp meeting in Kan. a few years ago. He has met with the saints at a few other places, but we have all felt there was something seriously wrong with him, and have labored with him; but no real deliverance was reached. We sincerely pray that henceforth he may show the fruits of an entirely new life in Christ Jesus. We pledge him our love, sympathy and prayers, and we sincerely hope that the fruits of righteousness may show forth themselves in him, that he may also have the confidence of all God’s people, yea, and “a good report also from them that are without.”

O my dear brother, flee from all the works of the devil. Determine to live honest in the sight of God and men. Take sides always against yourself. If some are long in reposing confidence in you, be not offended. Confess in your heart before God that you do not deserve the confidence and fellowship of God’s people, nor any blessing from God. Be patient, if in an actual new life, some for the want of clear discernment, seem to yet view you as under the shades of the old life. Be patient, and endure as seeing him that is invisible, and if you are really humble and true to God you will in due time compel the confidence of all good people.

We humbly advise you to not be in haste to assume the position of a public teacher. Let God first try you and prove you in a holy life. Keep little and silent before him. Wait on God. Let him bring forth your righteousness as the light of heaven. May God indeed show forth in you the true life of a pure and holy man Resist the devil, and fight the fight of faith. We accept your confession as sincere, and pledge you pardon, from our hearts, there having been nothing there held against you. O pray much my brother, and live very near to God. Amen.

Dear Saints: Bro. Charles Oglesby and myself, together with a number of saints from this place, went to Brown’s Hill, S. C. The people received the word gladly. We found a goodly number of honest souls, who were willing and anxious to hear the word of God preached in its purity. Many were convicted but would not yield to the wooings of the Spirit. One converted. Pray much for the church here and at Brown’s Hill, S. C.

Dear Saints of God: We have just returned home from the camp meeting in Ripley Co., Mo. That meeting will long be remembered on account of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. There were about eighty-five consecrations. Praise our God! We begin a meeting tomorrow night in the name of Jesus, at Valley Star school house. We are both young in the work, and I ask all the saints to pray for us that we may open our mouth to the furtherance of the gospel. Amen.

The Bushong meeting was moved to Allen, five miles east of Bushong, and was not attended as well by the saints as was expected although those who did attend were much benefited. We closed and took down the tent Sept. 3, and went to Brother Hazzard’s house and had a precious ordinance meeting. We came on to this place, and the Lord sent in many saints from different parts, and set the battle in array against the devil. Victory was soon manifest and the praises of God began to increase. God is sending forth his word with power, and is helping the dear ones to measure up. Yours saved,

Dear Saints: We are praising God for full salvation. All the members of the body in this wicked city are enjoying the sweetness and completeness of redeeming love. Some try to hang on, but the Word cuts them off. We had a glorious ordinance meeting at the residence of Bro. and Sister Wahgren’s yesterday P. M. God did flood our hearts with his blessed Spirit. Wife and I were over to Louisville, Colo., two weeks ago, and read the Word to a small congregation. Some honest souls there, but they need the Word more frequently, which they shall have, Lord willing. Your brother and sister all on the altar,

Dear Saints of God: May the dear Lord richly bless you all. I am glad to report victory and salvation in Jesus’ name. According to the call in the TRUMPET for a meeting in Rathdrum, Idaho, dear Bro’s Peterman and Moys, in company with the writer, were used in holding a two weeks meeting there with victory on the Lord’s side. There were five consecrations for a clean heart, and they declared their freedom from Babylon. A sister who was a sufferer for about eight years, was healed and is now able to attend to her household duties. May the Lord bless and preserve her soul and body blameless and healed for his praise and glory. There were other cases of healing also. Praise the Lord for this wonderful salvation complete in him! The Lord helped and blessed us in presenting his word. To his name be all the glory. I am consecrated to go wherever the Lord leads.

Pray for me. Your brother, saved and sanctified,

Geo. Martin.

Marquand, Mo., Sept 4, 94.

Dear Saints of God: We just closed meeting near Cape Girardeau. We found some division among those who claimed to be in the light. This was caused by some of the saints receiving a crooked spirit who came in the garb of a holiness preacher, and drinking in his doctrine. After much earnest prayer and fasting on the part of the children of God the Lord did move wonderfully, and nearly all the little ones got free from the false spirit. Our God did a good work, and most of the little flock made a real advance in the grace of God. Some yet need to get down before God. There were several consecrations for pardon, and fifteen were baptized, most of whom lately made their escape from the dark cage of Lutheranism. God has some very precious saints there. God keep them firm and increase their faith. We had a precious ordinance meeting in which thirty-seven children of God took part. God is mightily stirring all this river country in southeast Mo. and southwest Ill. Many places are now open for the truth, where it has never before been preached in its fullness. We are now at Marquand, in the name of Jesus, and God is working. We desire the prayers of the saints for the work here. Yours in the love and fellowship of the gospel,

R. M. and Lizzie Haynes.

Vichey, Mo., Sept. 10. 1894.

Dear Children of God: We are glad for the privilege to tell you of the goodness of God unto us, and to the people of this country. Bro. Bolds & Co. and myself left the Doniphan camp meeting a few days before it closed and went to Vichey. We found quite a number of honest truth seekers but not very many saved people. The fact is, the devil has defeated some of them so often that he has found their weak points, and they (not getting to the point of consecration where God could really work through them to defeat the devil) would fall into condemnation. Nearly all of these dear ones got down before God and confessed to him, confessed to each other and asked forgiveness, and then asked God to forgive them, and got in line with God seemingly as far as they knew how, while some failed to get back. Bro. Geo. Keeling came and was with us through the latter part of the meeting and helped us greatly. Now I believe it would be to God’s glory for some old experienced worker to go into these parts and work and get the people settled on the Word. One Bro. Jas. M. Bell who has just recently escaped out of the Methodist sect where he had been a preacher for a number of years, attended the meeting. We pray God to sink him down and prepare him for preaching in God’s true church. God bless all the people and reward them for their kindness to us. We ask the prayers of God’s people.

Yours in Jesus,

C. E. Hunter, Geo. E. Bolds & Co.

Dear Brethren: God bless you all. We have not written to the TRUMPET for some time, and as we have a short time to stay here before going to the W. Virginia camp meeting, I thought I would write and let the saints know where I am and how I do. I left the Melrose meeting for Smithport camp meeting where I arrived the second day after leaving Melrose, and found Bro’s Riggle, Clayton and others engaged in a good lively meeting, the result of which has been reported by Bro. Riggle. From this place I went to the Mc Connellsburg camp meeting in company with Bro’s Riggle and Wolf and wife, where we arrived in due time, and found a grove seated which accomodated all that were in attendance.

Well we did not find all, that professed out on this narrow way, in as good a condition as they might have been, nevertheless God blessed his word and a few souls were saved and were added, by the Lord, to the church. May God bless the little company of saints in and near Mc Connellsburgh. When the time came for our departure from this place, Bro. Raker carried us over in a hack to Three Springs, where we took train for Venango Co. camp meeting, where we arrived at the appointed time and found a beautiful grove prepared in which the saints of God pitched their tents, and the Lord granted them a glorious time of refreshing from the presence of the Lord. This camp ground is situated about two miles from Emlenton Station on the A. V. R. R. There were a good number of consecrations, and during the camp meeting there were about twenty buried with Christ in baptism. The last Saturday evening of the meeting, the saints showed the Lord’s death. There were about one hundred saints present on this solemn occasion. We left the Venango camp ground with Bro. Clayton, enrout for Mole Hill, W. Virginia. Let all the dear saints remember us in your prayers. Your saved and sanctified brother in Christ,

North Platte, Neb. Sept. 12, 1894.

Dear Trumpet Family: We are glad to report victory for King Jesus. The work is moving oh hear gloriously and souls are being saved. The devil thought at first that we were nothing but “feeble Jews” and would accomplish nothing, but he was disappointed, and when his domain began to tremble under the mighty word of God, he sent around his priests to try to effect a compromise; but we stood and still stand, on the immutable word of God, and can not give one particle. Failing in this he then began to publish lies in order to defeat the work. But the devils are subject unto us in Jesus’ name. Hallelujah! The devil has even threatened to starve us out, but we “fear no evil,” for he that is for us is more than all they that are against us. God is supplying all our needs according to his riches in glory. We are holding two meetings every night, one on the street up in the central part, and one in the north part, although we have no light but that of the moon, no shelter but the starry heavens, no seats but the grass, sidewalks, and a few chairs that some of the older people bring along. Yet as we see the people assembled around and seated, and as we begin to sing the songs of Zion, to see them coming from all directions, it fills us with a mighty zeal, and thrills our souls with joy as we proclaim the words of eternal life as the Spirit giveth utterance. There have been four consecrations at these open air meetings, and several have asked our prayers. The country is stirred up for twenty-five miles around, and we have ten or twelve calls ahead. The country is being well sown with literature; people come every once in a while asking for tracts. We are now laboring with our hands to pay for rent, and are glad to do anything we can for the salvation of souls and be as little burden as possible. Times are hard; every thing is burned up, except some few fields that were under ditches. There will be lots of suffering here this winter; but it is a grand time for soul harvest. We ask all the dear ones everywhere to pray for us. Yours in the gospel work, saved and kept,

Master, Randolph and Co.

Dodge, Kentucky, Sept. 6, 1894.

We wish to report to all the household of faith, our labor in the Lord since the Grand Junction camp meeting. On July 3, we, in company with Bro. W. Merritt and wife came to Benton Harbor, Mich. and began meeting in Union Chapel. So far as was apparent, but little was accomplished. A very few who had become careless renewed their covenant with God, but very few came out to the meetings. July 19 we came to Buchanan, and soon had the large tent up and ready for meeting. Here the meetings were well attended and many were won to the truth, and the Lord saved unto himself a precious company of saints who if properly taught and cared for by those who have longer been in the way of truth will settle upon the word so as to be able to stand. Great responsibility rests upon those whom God has left in charge there in caring for this flock. May the Lord give them wisdom.

From there we came to the Beaver Dam camp meeting. This meeting we enjoyed so well, and were so greatly benefited, that as time rolls on we can only look back to it in pleasure. But here we were called to endure the pains of separation from our beloved brother and sister Merritt, the Lord sending them to Columbia City, and ourselves in company with Bro. E. E. Byrum to the Floyd’s Knobs, Ind. camp meeting. Here we met with Bro’s Keeling, Moore, and Schreiber, and Sisters Fink and Fry, all engaged in the gospel work. The saints came in from Jennings, Jackson, Washington and. Crawford counties, until quite a large company had gathered on the ground. We never attended a meeting where Satan endeavored to hinder the work as he did here, in the way of sending in evil spirits, spurious holiness teachers, clairvoyants, and two demon spirits representing Zion’s Watch Tower of Pittsburgh. The battle however, was the Lord’s, and he in this as always, gains the victory. Many precious souls were saved. This meeting was an opening for meetings in the city. The tabernacle will be pitched in New Albany this week and meeting begun. Wife and Sisters Fink and Fry, and Bro’s Moore and Schreiber expect to assist in the meeting.

I came yesterday to this place (Dodge, Ky.) to assist Bro. Carter. I find a large field open for the gospel here, and calls from every direction. Let us pray the Lord to send more workers into the vineyard. Who can come here and labor this winter? It is quite probable we will labor most of the winter in Southern Indiana. We are on the advance continually, reaching greater depths of humility, and greater degrees of faith day after day. Do not forget to pray for us. Yours separated unto the gospel,

Chas. and Minnie Orr.

Jerry City, O., Sept. 13, 1894.

Dear Saints: I am still sweetly saved in my blessed Redeemer. I arrived home from Virginia, July 25. Met with the dear sainis of God near Springfield, Ohio. Had a good time with them praising the Lord. Left home the seventh of August. Came to New Washington, O., held meeting with the little ones there, the Lord meeting with us in power. Taking leave of the dear ones, I came on to Brother Wm. H. Miller’s. Was glad to meet the dear ones. From there went to the Jerry City camp ground and helped to get things in shape for meeting in the evening. During the day our hearts were made glad by the coming of Brother Worden and Co. and the dear saints from various parts of the country. I believe this was one of the grandest camp meetings ever held on this ground. Some of the dear ones found that they were not in line with the Word as it went forth, but while the Word discovered unto them their true condition, they were willing to make the consecration, and get the real desire of their hearts. The Lord was with us in mighty healing and saving power. It was a grand settling down in God. On the seventh in company with Bro’s Miller, Lea, and Mother Smith, we went about five miles west of Findlay, O., and held a five days meeting at Brother Longbrake’s house, as the Union meeting house was closed against the saints of God. Well did Jesus say, My word has no place in you. The way is straight; who can walk in it? Ans. The redeemed of the Lord. The word went forth in power. Praise God! Four dear ones consecrated; one baptized. Praise the Lord for honest souls! Among those that consecrated was a dear old mother eighty-one years old. God bless those dear ones near Findlay. They desire our prayers. Bro. Miller and I are now making arrangements to go to Virginia in the near future. Pray for us. Yours in him.

Waynesfield, O., Sept. 7, 1894.

Beloved Brethren in Christ: In the name of the Lord we began June 23 to hold a series of meetings one and one-half miles northeast of Wyandott, and continued two weeks. A few saints are found in this vicinity. This meeting including three evenings at Wyandott in the town hall, resulted in four or five consecrations. From there we went five miles west to Little Sandusky, and commenced meeting in the town hall July 11, and continued twelve days. This was a new place. Conviction rested upon many, until some would sit and weep; others sanctioned the truth freely, yet would not give up their sins, and sects. There are prospects of a harvest of souls at that place, as there were many friends toward the truth, and sinners were disgusted at the sects. From there we went over to the Marion Co. meeting, at which place Brothers Schell and Warren imparted unto us many precious lessons. After the close of this meeting, we began the battle for the truth Aug. 9, at Pleasant Grove union meeting house, about six miles north, at which place one of the most deceptive sects hold regular services. It is called “The Church of Christ in Christian Union.” They preach very radically against all sects and classify them as part of Aabylon, and they are one of the worst sects themselves. God did use us in exposing this deceptive counterfeit. We continued there ten days. Five came to the altar. From there we commenced meeting at Peasant Valley school-house. Here we announced meeting for two evenings, and on the second evening, souls began to come to the altar. The Lord held us at this place fifteen days, with some body at the altar almost every service. Glory be to God forever! Nineteen were buried by baptism. In the evening about forty assembled at the school-house to obey the divine command of washing the saints’ feet, afterward commemorating Christ’s death and suffering by partaking of the bread and wine. The meeting closed the next evening. We wish to thank the saints and kind friends for their supplying our needs. From there we returned home. We will probably hold a meeting or two in this vicinity and then wherever the Lord directs. Any wishing to write to us, address us at Waynesfield, Ohio. Your brothers under the blood.

Wichita, Kan., Sept. 3, 1894.

Dear Saints of God: After the Grand Junction camp meeting, wife and I and our son Wesley took our journey through Illinois where we stopped at one of my wife’s brothers, near a station called Shinkle, on the Illinois Central R. R. Here we commenced a meeting the same day at evening in the southern M. E. house. Preacher in charge present made a good many amens to the truth, and the people were much interested and desired us to continue the meetings, as we had told them we were ready for service. But the M. E. preacher forestalled the matter by saying that the presiding elder had given strict charge not to let any one into the house to hold a series of meetings. But the trustees present thought they had the power to open the house, and for the first time found out that they bad no power to do so, though they had paid the money for the building. They are wiser now, as they found out that the bishop and the preachers he sends there, own the house, and the people are the slaves of Babylon. One of the members took it in hand and had the school house, a mile away opened up for the preaching of the pure gospel a few nights. We had a very good attendance. It was a seed sowing time. If some of God’s baptized firebrands could shortly go there with a tabernacle, they could gather in a number of souls. If any feel led to go, write to John Hamblen, Shinkle, Fayette Co., Ill.

We went on to St. Louis, Mo., and attended what is called the Mrs. Woodworth meetings. In their testimonies they testified to the two definite works of grace, and of the wonderful healing of their bodies. They claim in their teaching and work that they do every thing very much as we do. But I notice in their dress they are very much like the sects. Also another peculiar thing, some of them took fits of jerking and shaking of their limbs, and their whole body. They think it is the power of God, but the minister said there is a marked difference in God shaking the people and the devil shaking them. As we have no evidence of such demonstrations of the power of God either by precept or example in holy writ, my conclusion is that all such jerking and shaking is from Satan, and that these people pretty well mix up in the enemy’s lines.

From this place we went to St. James, Mo., and out from town to Bro. G. W. Beckham’s, where we held forth the word of truth for a week. Brothers C. E. Hunter and Carter came to us on Saturday and labored over Sabbath. Three consecrations, and deep conviction rested on some of the people. We went back to St. James and held two meetings. From there we went to Rolla twelve miles west, and preached on the street at night to a good audience. That night after meeting I was taken violently sick; It seemed I could not live, but praise the dear Lord, by the laying on of hands and prayer and faith, was instantly healed, and next day had a meeting at Sister Light’s. Had a precious time. From there we went on to Leabnon to the Mc Grath C. M., some twelve miles, on the beautiful (Bennet) Spring branch, where we met quite a number of the saints and workers, had a glorious meeting.

From there we went on to Carthage, Mo., and held a meeting for nearly two weeks. God manifested his glorious power in converting, sanctifying and healing, yet only in a few instances. The church was much strengthened. One brother who had got very much mixed up in sectism, got fully delivered. At the close of the meeting we had a very precious ordinance service. Afterward returned home where we are resting up awhile, as we are very much worn out. After resting a while we will be ready to go wherever the Lord leads. Yours in Christ,

A. Markwell, Wife, and Son.

Three Hundred Scriptures an the Church.

FOR YOUNG CONVERTS AND OTHERS.

_____

THE BODY OF CHRIST.

He (Christ) is the head of the body, the church. Col. 1:18. There being but one head, there is but one body. Eph. 4:4. 1 Cor. 10:16.

We (who are saved) are the body of Christ. Rom. 12:5. God places us in the body. 1 Cor. 12:18. Being baptized into the one body by one Spirit. 1 Cor. 12:13.

There is no sinner in his body. Eph. 5:27. Nor any sin. 1 Jno. 3:5. 1 Cor. 6:18.

The body receives nourishment from Christ, the head. Col. 2:19. Eph. 5:29.

All the members of the body love one another. 1 Cor. 12:25, 26.

The body is fitly joined together. Eph. 4:16. Tempered together. 1 Cor. 12:24. Knit together. Col. 2:2, 19. There are no schisms or divisions in the body. 1 Cor. 12:25.

Christ is the Savior of the body. Eph. 5:23. We are members of his body, his flesh and his bones. Eph. 5:30. Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid. 1 Cor. 6:15. Babylon the great is Romanism the Mother of harlots, and her daughters, the Protestant sects. Rev. 17:5. Know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? 1 Cor. 6:16.

The church, the body of Christ, has but one head — Christ. The sects have many heads. See Micah 3:11. The pope, cardinals, bishops, etc., are the heads; the priests and preachers, that preach lies, are the tail. See Isa. 9:15. But in the body of Christ, one is our Master, even Christ, and all we are brethren. Mat. 23:8.

THE CHURCH OF GOD.

And thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the Lord shall name. Isa. 62:1, 2. What is it? See Acts 20:38. 1 Cor. 10:32. 1 Tim. 3:5. Yes, but there are gods many. 1 Cor. 8:5. But this is the church of the living God. 1 Tim. 3:15. For us there is but one God. 1 Cor. 8:6.

The church is composed of living people. 1 Cor. 14:23. There are no contentions among them. 1 Cor. 11:16. Because God is not the author of confusion. I Cor. 14:33. All the churches everywhere suffered Paul and others to teach them, and to ordain elders among them. See 1 Cor 4:17. Acts 14:23. Titus 1:5.

The Lord “receives” the members (see conditions). 2 Cor. 6:17. The Lord adds to the church. Acts 2:47. We go in at the door, which is Christ. Jno. 10:9. The preacher cannot open nor shut the door. See Rev. 3:8. You cannot join God’s church; some tried it once. Acts 5:1—13.

Her creed or articles of faith, are found in Rev. 10:10. Mat. 4:4. Her discipline or rules of government, are given in 2 Tim. 3:16, 17. Jno. 17:8, 14. Psa. 119:105.

She was built by Jesus Christ. Mat. 16:18. You will learn the name of her organizer in 1 Cor. 12th chapter. She was builded on the day of Pentecost. Acts 2:47.

She has a class book. Phil. 4:3. It is kept in heaven. Luke 10:20. The Lord writes and counts the members. Psa. 87:6. It is wrong to have your name written in earth. Jer. 17:13.

The Holy Spirit calls the ministers. Acts 13:2. And sends them to preach. Acts 8:29. Gal. 1:1. Here is the preachers’ “circuit” — Mark 16:15. They do not prefix “Reverend” to their names. God alone is Reverend. Psa. 111:9. Jesus said: Render unto God the things that are God’s. Mat. 22:21. They do not preach on salary, for the hireling careth not for the sheep. Jno. 10:12, 13. Salaried preachers only care for their money. Isa. 56:11. If you wish to know how God’s ministers live, read Mark 10:29, 30. They all understand the Bible alike. Isa. 52:8. Joel 2:1-8. Because the Spirit guides them into all truth. Jno. 16:13.

The gates of hell shall not prevail against the church. Mat. 16:18. (The word “hell” here is from the Greek word hades, the “unseen,” or the place where the souls go at death.) Death is the gates to the unseen. The reason that death does not prevail against God’s church, is, because we are one family in heaven and in earth (Eph. 3:15), and when a saint leaves this earth, he merely passes from the church visible, to the church invisible to us here.

But how about the man or woman who “sins a little every day,” and who is a member in good standing, or perhaps a bishop, or an “evangelist” in one of the modern so-called churches that men have founded? When he dies there is one less in his sect. But did he or she, a sinner, become a saint at death? No! See Rev. 22:11. Death the gates of the unseen hath prevailed against his sect.

God’s church is triumphant. 2 Cor. 2:14. Poor sectarian and sinner, repent and enter into the church of the firstborn which is written in heaven. Heb. 12:23.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CHURCH.

The church of the living God was builded, organized, and established, in A. D. 33, by our Lord Jesus Christ. The government of his church is upon his shoulders. Isa. 9:6. To become a member of the church, God’s family, one must be born in her. Psa. 87:5. And in order to remain in her we must be obedient to all the commands of Jesus. Man lost the image of God through disobedience; it is restored to him through obedience. It required two steps on the part of our foreparents to become sinners. — They first conceived the sin. and secondly they committed it. See Jas. 1:15. As it required two steps to fall, so it requires two steps to return to their original condition. “We are changed into the same image from glory to glory,” 2 Cor. 3:18. The washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit. Titus 3:5.

David says, “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.” Psa. 51:5. This is the “inherited sin” or “carnal mind” which every child that is born into the world possesses. This is a plant which our heavenly Father hath not planted. Mat. 15:13. The sin which doth so easily beset you. Heb. 12:1. Therefore David saith again, The wicked are estranged from the womb. Psa. 58:3. This is the sin which inclines us to commit sins as soon as we attain to the age of accountability, and become sinners.

Jesus came to save his people from their sins, Mat. 1:21, and to take away the sin of the world. Jno. 2:29. When we repent of our sins, and forsake them, and confess to God, and cry for mercy, God for Christ’s sake forgives us, and we become as little children. Mat. 18:3. We are no longer sinners, but the “inherited sin” remains. As we did not commit it, it could not be forgiven.

The forgiveness of our sins was a complete work, but another complete work is necessary in order to be “free indeed,” for as long as the old “root of bitterness,” Heb. 12:15, Remains, we are liable to get angry and be quarrelsome, and “divide,” as the sectarians have done, also to dress stylishly; and like Paul before he was sanctified, we are liable to “do the evil which we would not.” Rom. 7:19. It was the “sin” that dwelled in him that caused it. Verse 20. He found deliverance from it in the 25th verse, and testifies to it all through the 8th chapter (see Gal. 2:20). The Son of God was manifested to destroy the works of the devil. 1 Jno. 3:8.

These two works of grace are taught all through the Bible. I will here give a few texts: Psa. 51:2, 7. Zech. 13:1. Isa. 26:12. Rom. 5:1, 2. 2 Cor. 7:1. Titus 3:5. 1 Jno. 1:9. Rev. 7:14. Also Paul’s epistle to the Hebrews. Paul said to the Hebrews, after their sins were forgiven, “Go on to perfection.” Heb. 6:1. He well knew they could not be perfect as long as the works of the devil remained in them. He said to his “brethren” the Thessalonians, “This is the will of God, even your sanctification.” He told the Corinthians, “I was minded to come unto you before [i. e. the time before this], that ye might have a second grace [margin].” 2 Cor. 1:15.

Jesus prayed that the apostles who had been regenerated or born again (Mat. 19:28) might be sanctified. Jno. 17:17. He also prayed that we might be. John 17:20. All the teachers, sent of God, in the primitive church, taught two works, or heart purity. Here are some extracts from the teachings of Jesus, the apostles and others: “Be ye perfect.” “Everyone that is perfect shall be as his Master.” “Serve God without fear, in holiness and righteousness all the days of our life.” “Purifying their hearts by faith.” “Blessed are the pure in heart.” “Let not sin, therefore, reign in your mortal body.” “Without holiness no man shall see the Lord.” “Be ye holy for I am holy.” “He hath perfected forever them that are sanctified.” “Purify your hearts, ye double minded.” “Walk as he walked.” “Pure as he is pure.” “Righteous as be is righteous.” “As he [Christ] is, so are we in this world.” “Arrayed in fine linen,” etc. These are only a few of many.

The “white horse” under the first seal, Rev. 6:2, denotes the purity and holiness of the primitive church. But Isaiah complains that “the people of thy holiness possessed it but a little while.” Isa. 63:18. History verifies the fulfillment of this and many other prophecies concerning the church of the living God. The same prophet predicted an awful night to follow the bright pure “morning” of the church. “Watchman, what of the night? watchman, what of the night? The watchman said, The morning cometh and also the night. Isa. 21:11, 12. The watchman’s answer is one fraught with dark forebodings and gloomy portent. As also the words of Jesus (Jno. 9:4), “The night cometh when no man can work.”

Dear saints, let us sing praises to God that we are in the “evening light,” and that the awful night of the apostasy is in the past! Yes, “she that hath borne seven languished, she gave up the ghost, her sun went down while it was yet day. Jer. 15:9. The earth was darkened in the clear day. Amos 8:9. But whence this awful darkness? Paul said (A. D. 54), “The mystery of iniquity doth already work.” 2 Thes. 2:7. John, the beloved apostle, said (A. D. 90), “Even now are there many antichrists.” 1 Jno. 2:18. The enemy had sown the tares of apostasy (Mat. 13:24.) among the wheat (God’s church). Then came “the mystery of iniquity” — Mystery Babylon the great, the mother of harlots and abominations of the earth. Rev. 17:5. The tares fast multiplied and increased. “The living church retiring gradually within the lonely sanctuary of a few solitary hearts,” until in the year A. D. 270, gross darkness covered the earth.

Her sun had gone down. “As long as I am in the world I am the light of the world.” Jno. 9:5. But the Sun of righteousness was now discarded and papal darkness reigned supreme. The pope was declared the head of the apostasy, which they also called the church. He as God, sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. 2 Thes. 2:4. The woman (church) fled into the wilderness where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days, Rev. 12:6, — 1260 days. A day for a year, Num. 14:34, — 1260 years. A long night, lasting from A. D. 270 to 1530, when the Protestants ratified the Confession of Augsburg. The holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months. Rev. 11:2. If you multiply 42 months by 30, the number of days in a month, you have 1260, which denotes the same period as that in 12:6. See also 11:3. The first beast (popery) of Rev. 13:1, was given power to continue forty and two months — 1260 years. Rev. 13:5.

In 1530 the reformation triumphed over Romanism, and the beast was wounded. See Rev. 13:3. Thousands separated from the Mother of harlots and joined the Protestants. And to the woman was given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness (from one wilderness into another, Romanism into Protestantism) into her place, where she is nourished for a time, times and a half a time (one hundred, two hundred and half a hundred years), from the face of the serpent. Rev. 12:14. Protestantism continued from 1530 to 1880. The Protestant sects are the “harlots and abominations of the earth,” because they came out of Romanism, the mother. This second wilderness is identical with the second beast of Rev. 13:11. The two witnesses (the Spirit and the word of God) lay dead in the streets of the great city (Babylon) three days and a half (three centuries and a half). Rev. 11:9. Why? Because they had the form of godliness and seeking the power, as the Methodist discipline has it. But Paul makes it plain in 2 Tim. 3:5, “Having the form of godliness, but denying the power thereof.” And how many professors to day, declare, as they always have done throughout the dark ages, that the days of miracles are past, while the Word declares that “these signs shall follow them that believe,” “and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world!” It is because they had not the power, but denied it. Ye shall receive power after the Holy Spirit is come upon you. Acts 1:8. But the two. witnesses lay dead in her streets. The word of God is a dead letter there, for they refuse to obey it. Nor do they understand it. See Micah 3:6, 7, and Isa. 29:9-14. Also Isa. 59:1, 2.

AN EXHORTATION

_____

To the Elders and Deacons of the Churches of God. There are repeated just and benevolent calls in the TRUMPET for means, food or clothing, etc., to help provide for the sick and afflicted, or for the worthy poor and needy in various parts of the country; which is all right, and they should be carefully looked after by the above named officers especially, yea, by all saints, with an untiring Christian love and benevolence. We advise and exhort all these named officers in the church, that, in the future any persons sick, afflicted or needy, in your community, county or state, is needing the help or support of the saints; if the elders locally, or evangelistic elders laboring among you, are aware of such needy ones, or any of the saints, to report the same to the deacon of that local congregation, or to the nearest congregation of saints, where such help is needed; that he take the matter in hand at once and see to it in the love of God, that such are at once cared for, by calling upon that congregation, or upon the congregations in his reach, for the needed help. And if this is not sufficient, then let him at once communicate the wanted help to any or all of the deacons known to him, or to the elders of the various churches of the saints in that county or state, by private communication, and thereby relieve the GOSPEL TRUMPET office of publishing such calls to the saints and church in general. But should the above steps of private callings for help thus fail, then let the matter be reported to and published in the TRUMPET. All such matters should be as far as possible attended to by the deacons, and thereby each congregation or the neighboring congregations of saints, take care of and support their own. Let not the flying angels of the Lord and their helpers attend to duties in this matter, which are strictly your own and within your calling. Dear ones, let the Lord’s flying angels have as much time as possible for the study and ministry of the Word. It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, to serve tables. But we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the Word. Act 6:2, 4. It is true that the Lord’s ministers and field workers, are ever willing and consecrated to attend to these or to any other of Christian duties, and so is also the G. T. office. But dear ones, we should ever consider and do all we can, to help them along in their own and special calling; and yet, if any of the ministers are among you laboring or visiting in the gospel, any congregation of saints wish to make and send a contribution to any of the poor or needy, or to the TRUMPET office, by their hands, it is right and proper, and in the New Testament, Apostolic order. Let the deacons carefully and frequently study and read Acts 6:1-5. 1 Tim. 3:8-15. Let all the saints in any state or community, see that you all do your whole duty by all poor and afflicted men, especially those of the family of God. And let none among you suffer want or be in need, but faithfully inquire into the state or condition of the needy ones, or those who may be in need among you, or within your reach in any respect. Let all of the saints read in the fear of God, Mat. 25:31-43, and let us all apply it to ourselves individually. Amen.

Dear Saints of God: I feel led of God to testify what the Lord has done for me. I am saved and trusting him ever day. Praise God for salvation! Last February God in his goodness and mercy sent some of his ministers down my way and they preached the true light. And the more I heard them preach, the more I felt my sins burden me. But thank God for his loving kindness to me, I can say to day that I stand all for Jesus. Therefore my heart is glad and my glory rejoiceth. Pray for me that I may always be found standing for God and doing his will. Your saved sister in Jesus,

Dear Saints: I feel that God would have me to tell you what he has done for me. O praise his name! he first showed me that I was a sinner. I had so much of the love of the world in my heart that I held to my pride and would not yield. The Lord showed me that I would be lost if I did not give up. Then I said that I would, and the devil said if I would the girls would all forsake me. So the devil had me hardened till I was afraid to close my eyes at night. I went on that way for a month. It was a terrible way to live. I did not have rest with the world or saints. So I told the Lord I would surrender, if it took every friend I had. Oh I do praise the Lord that I ever did come to him. It is so sweet to live at his feet. I can say the Lord has healed me many times. Oh praise the Lord! we have good meetings here Sunday and Sunday night, and once through the week. The Lord is with us, and we have perfect victory in the meeting. The devil has no hand in it. Praise the Lord for salvation! Pray for me that I may stand for Jesus. Your saved and sanctified sister,

Minnie B. Defore.

Dear Saints: We do praise God for salvation and for the sanctifying power that keeps us hid away in God. I feel deeply impressed to write about what the Lord revealed to me some time ago. We had laid all medicine aside, except some grease that we had to rub on when we had colds. Our baby took sick with cold and fever. We greased his breast, laid hands on and asked God to heal him, and went to bed trusting God to do the work as he ofttimes had healed us before. But the fever continued all night. In the morning while lying on the bed, seeking to know the will of God, there appeared one large eye at my right side. I could see it very plain. A whisper came, “That is the all-seeing eye.” Something told me that I was trusting in grease, that I had greased the child. I told God if it was against his will to use grease, we would not use any more. And when I was willing to give up the grease, the eye came directly over me, and a whisper said, God is a zealous God. and when we apply the grease God does not get all the glory. At once the fever was gone; the child got well. To God be all the glory. And I want to say, from that day to this we have never applied any thing, but take God at his word. Praise the Lord! Is any among you afflicted? Let him pray. Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up. James 5:13-15. Praise God for faith! What a privilege God has given to his people, to obtain the faith which was once delivered unto the saints! Jude 3. Your humble sister, saved and kept by the power of God,

Rachel M. Stauffer.

Dear Saints of God: I feel led to write my testimony to the TRUMPET. Though I have never heard the evening light preached, I am out of sectism and it is out of me. Praise the Lord! I was a member of the M. E. North sect for nearly three years, and lived a Methodist after the strictest order of my sect, attending socials, fairs, and suppers, and reading funny papers to them to make the people laugh and have a good time, as the world puts it. I knew no better and thought it was just the thing to do; but thanks be to God, I loved my Bible, and I began to study it and it only took me a short time to see how inconsistent such actions were with its teachings. So I must do one of two things, give up such vanities or be lost. Thank the Lord, I gave up church entertainments and told the people that I would never take part in another church entertainment. By the grace of God I have kept my word. They have no attraction for me at all; I once loved them, but now I hate them. Soon after I opposed socials and began to read scripture condemning it, most of my old M. E. friends began to forsake me and falsely accuse me, and get up publicly and try to contradict something that I had said. This puzzled me, and I began to study my Bible to find out the cause. I soon learned that God’s people were all of the same mind and of the same spirit, and that there were no contention, strife or divisions among them. So I came to the conclusion that they were not God’s children. So I heard the call sounding from the Word, “Come out from among them and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and I will receive you.” And I obeyed the call and went to the minister and told him to look on me no more as a member of his church, and to take my name off his class book. He refused to do so, saying he could not, and that I was a good man, etc., and just to stay where I was. But I did not stay; I came out, and in a meeting told the people how I had been led out of Egypt and spent one year in the wilderness (on probation), two years a captive in Babylon (sectism), but now I had crossed Jordan and had reached the land of promise, but I had many enemies to conquer, and much hard fighting to do yet. And I find that these words have come true; but I find a great consolation in 2 Chron. 20:15. Read it. And dear readers, is not this a wonderful good reason for not being afraid! Here we have it again, in the 17th verse. — Ye shall not need to fight in this battle; stand still and see the salvation of the Lord with you. The Lord with us is the secret of our strength. Go ye therefore and teach all nations to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you, and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

J. R. Daniels.
