LIVE OUT THY LIFE WITHIN ME.

_____

Live out Thy life within me,
O Jesus. King of Kings!
Be Thou Thyself the answer
To all my questionings.

Live out Thy life within me,
In all things have Thy way;
I the transparent medium.
Thy glory to display.

The temple has been yielded,
And purified of sin;
Let Thy Shekina glory
Now flash forth from within.

And all the earth keep silence,
This body henceforth be
Thy silent, docile servant,
Moved but as moved by Thee.

Its members every moment,
Held subject to Thy call,
Ready to have Thee use them,
Or not be used at all.

Held without restless longing.
Or strain or stress or fret,
Or chafings at Thy dealings,
Or thoughts of vain regret.

But restful, calm and pliant,
From bent and bias free.
Permitting Thee to settle,
When Thou hast need of me.

Live out Thy life within me,
In every detail;
O let Thy purpose triumph,
Thy glorious thought prevail.

I, like you stately vessel,
O’ercoming wind and tide —
Thyself the steam, the rudder,
The compass and the guide.

Live out Thy life within me,
O Jesus. King of Kings,
Be Thou the glorious answer
To all my questionings.

DIVINE HEALING.

_____

AMONG the manifestations of the power of God, next to the salvation of the soul, the devil detests divine healing. Nothing stirs him much quicker or makes him more uneasy, than for God to touch some one with his healing hand and raise them up in answer to prayer.

Satan has tried for ages to defeat the work of God, and destroy the plan of salvation, and to do so has exhausted many of his well laid plans, that apparently worked well for a time. During the dark reign of Catholicism he did not seem to have a very hard time to keep the people in darkness as long as the word of God was kept from the people. But a thousand years, or so, later, when the Bible began to be placed into the hands of the common people, it struck the enemy a severe blow, and a great reformation was begun. As the Word was preached to the people light shone forth, and the devil seeing his kingdom in danger, undertook to rally his forces and ordered the Bibles to be burned and the Christians to be put to death. Finding this nefarious work and great slaughter only kindled the fire of truth in the hearts of the people, he concluded it wise to pursue another course. His plan was well laid, and that was, to let the people have the Bible, but make them believe that most of it was for the apostles and the people of olden time, and of no use to people of later times. He well knew if he could succeed in getting people to believe that the principal doctrines of the Bible were for the time of the apostles only, then it would be an easy matter to get them divided into pens of sectism, as disbelieving the word would soon work divison, and only a small matter to consider another good portion as non-essential. But the time has now come that the Word of God is being preached in all its purity showing the evils of sectism, and the unity of believers and their privileges in Christ Jesus. As people accept Jesus as their Savior from all sin, and the healer of their diseases “the same yesterday, today, and forever,” it stirs the devil to work up new plans and inventions to deceive the people.

The point we wish to mention at present is that of divine healing.

Since that is being preached as the truth of God and privilege of the believer, Satan has sent out his counterfeits. Christian Science, or mind healing, is a deception of the devil, and many poor honest souls are being ensnared by its delusive web under the name of religion. Those who practice on that line generally charge so much a week, or for curing, but Jesus never sent such persons out nor gave them any power to heal the sick. Their power comes from some other source. Jesus said to those whom he sent out,” Freely ye have received, freely give.”

Spiritualism is another counterfeit for healing, and a work of the devil, and we do not hesitate in saying that every spiritualistic medium is possessed with devils, and persons placing themselves into the hands of such for healing, are almost sure to be bound by Satan.

There are others who believe in divine healing and not having the real experience of salvation, and power of God to back it up, teach only from a theoretical standpoint and thus bring a reproach on the cause of Christ. Although where the Word is preached straight by some one who is crooked, and only has the theory and not an experience, the Word will reach some honest soul occasionally who may be able to reap the benefit and have faith to be healed.

Some one may ask why there is not more of the healing power manifest among the children of God who claim to believe the whole word of God? The answer is easily given. It is principally because there is not enough definite teaching on the subject. It has been taught as present truth in a sense, or kind of a general way, but as a general thing has been kept too much in the back-ground. It must be preached with just as much positiveness as justification and sanctification, and backed by Holy Ghost authority. Let the people have the Word on these things and they will believe, for “faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word.” And in older for them to hear, the preacher must do his duty and give them the Word, and furthermore, he must be sent of God, and endued with power from on high, so that his preaching may be substantiated before the eyes of the people. It may require some humiliation and more earnest appeals to God to become a faithful servant of the Lord, than many imagine, but when preachers get to doing their whole duty on this line as God would be pleased to have them do, and the people have the Word given, line upon line, and precept upon precept, people will have faith, and the name of the Lord be magnified.

HUMILITY.

_____

Humility is one of the graces of the Spirit that has been hidden for ages past, even since man pretended to take upon himself the prerogative of God, claiming to be invested with the authority to lord it over God’s heritage. Man becoming vain and supercilious, casting away the real grace that was essential to the life of purity, becoming arrogant and puffed up in his own mind, God could no longer trust him, hence gross darkness bore down upon the inhabitants of earth, until every aspiration for the virtue of humility was lost. Man was no longer willing to take the lower seat but every heart seemed to be moved by a haughty spirit that yearned, yea even fought for the honor of worldly fame.

Look back through the darkness; search the records of history. Where do you find during the reign of Romish night, the meek, gentle spirit of Christ manifest? It cannot be found. Superstition and ignorance reigned supreme. Those vile dignitaries reached the zenith of human glory, when they could domineer over those less favored. Onward rolled the old earth. Time flew swiftly by, and all space seemed to be darkened by the togs that emanated from the infernal regions. The earth seemed to be heaving and groaning beneath the fearful load of sin.

But during this awful gloom, even when man was raised to the highest plane of’ human praise, the omnipotence of God interfered, and during the sixteenth century many rays of light were sent into as many darkened hearts. Many precious truths were disseminated throughout the universe. There was wrought a great reformation. Man became enlightened; the powers of hell began to recede before the glorious truth of heaven, in reference to justification by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Man began to realize his weakness in the eyes of God. Man drew nearer to God; God spoke to man. Man began to trust God, and God to trust man. Man gave God the praise; God gave man the power. Man glorified God; God exalted man until great power was manifest throughout the whole of Christendom. This has been known as the age of Protestantism, or cloudy day. Zech. 14:6, 7.

But alas! as persecution began to subside, that evil spirit took hold of man again; priestcraft appeared, self- exalted spirits arose frrm every side, saying, Lo here, and lo there is Christ, until a great multiplicity of satanic creeds have been invented, all clamoring for the pre-eminence. And as soon as the teachers lost sight of the real humility of Christ, a sectish spirit took possession of them. As they began to look for and search after popularity, God delivered them over to delusions, at the same time sending in thundering tones a proclamation throughout the earth declaring the fall of Babylon and her utter destruction. Rev. 18:1-5. God is searching out his sheep, Eze. 34:12, bringing them to Mount Zion, Isa. 35:8-10. The two dark days or ages are past. We are raised to the plane of purity and oneness. And His going forth among his people is just as in the morning light or apostolic age. Hosea 6:1-3. And at that time they had Christ for an example, who being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Phil. 2:8. If Christ is our example that we should follow his steps. Pet. 2:21-22, “Let all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility; for God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.” 1 Pet. 5:5, 6.

Advancement, increase, a forward move, is heard from every obedient heart. But all who desire an increase in the power of God, will greatly miss their expectation unless they first humble themselves under his mighty hand. And when all such get where they can be trusted, God will exalt them in due time, or just as soon as they are prepared to receive an increase. May the God of love enable every honest soul to comprehend that, “The fear of the Lord is the instruction o£ wisdom; and before honor is humility.” Prov. 15:33. Professed ministers sometimes wonder why they cannot preach like some one else, or have an experience like others. Let me tell you, that you have advanced just as far as God can trust you. There are those who if God does give them some liberty in preaching, and after services some one is heard to remark, “Was not that a good sermon?” they are raised several degrees in their own estimation in a moment’s time. And often we hear such statements as these, “Did I not pour it onto them, though?” “I tell you I opened their eyes.” “Don’t you think I done well?” “How did you like that sermon any way?” and the next time they undertake to preach they are just as dead spiritually as can be. Then after meeting they begin to ask, “Well I wonder what was the matter of the meeting to-night?” Let God Almighty tell you what the trouble is. “Whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased.” Luke 14:11. You get yourself in the way of God, he cannot trust you. You took to yourself the praise; you were not a fit temple for the power of God to dwell in. You became proud of your vain self; God knew you afar off. What you need is the real baptism of fire which if you do get will destroy all self. When a person gets into this dreadful self-exalted position they are continually dictating to others how they should do; but just give them an admonition that they need, and you will see self-justification coming to the front, after which they do not feel like even saying, Praise the Lord, or even Amen, when some one else prays or preaches. To all such let me say, you have not yet attained to the standard of the Old Testament justification, much less New Testament sanctification. David said, “Let the righteous smite me; it shall be a kindness, and let him reprove me; it shall be an excellent oil, which shall not break my head.” Psa. 141:5. If an admonition or reproof breaks your head, insomuch that you cannot use your mouth to the glory of God, you had better get down before God and get salvation. Oh in Jesus’ name get down, down into the depths of humility! Your soul and thousands of others are at stake. You are nothing; then why let the devil get you filled with an exalted opinion of yourself? It is far better to sit still and not say anything at all than to be continually telling others what you have done. People do not want to hear it; it disgusts sinners and then you have no influence over them. “Let another man praise thee and not thine own mouth.” Prov. 27:2.

Humility is a most excellent grace. Through it the soul is transformed, and every barrier taken away, preparing the soul to receive the faith of God. It is one of the constituent principles of salvation. It was what characterized the lovely Lamb of God, and is just as essentially requisite now to complete our salvation as it was for Christ to be a perfect Savior. When Christ performed any good work he did not go forth sounding a trumpet, and calling the attention of people, that he might have glory of men, but he says the hypocrites do thus. Mat. 6:2. So let all beware that they be not tainted with hypocrisy. Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, long-suffering, Col. 3:12, and God will exalt you in due time. Your humble brother,

W. A. Haynes.

Dear Saints: I praise the dear Lord for a full and free salvation which keeps me free from all sin. I praise his name for his mighty healing power, for he has healed me of a very bad spell of sickness, and I give him all the glory. There are no saints in this part of the country except wife and I. And we take the Lord for our physician for both soul and body. The dear Lord has manifested his healing power in our family several times. Since we got saved I promised the Lord it he would heal my body I would write my testimony and send it to the Trumpet office. Praise the Lord, I am well, and I desire the dear saints every where that read this to pray that I may be sanctified wholly, given up to the Lord to do his whole will.

Dear Saints: I am glad I read the Gospel Trumpet. My eyes have been opened since I have searched your papers. I am now a member of the M. E. church. I have been in darkness, but your works have brought light to me. I have a great interest in your publications. I desire the prayers of all the saints, that I may be able to lay hold of the gospel of Christ and become a real saint. I am willing to do just what ever the Lord has commanded. I am caused to believe that the church of God which you teach, is the only church that Jesus established on the globe. Quite a number of the people in this vicinity are reading your papers and are believing what they read. I desire all the dear saints to pray for me that I may be cleansed from tobacco.

Dear Ones in the Lord: By God’s grace I am still fully saved and healed, and rejoicing in the love that has purchased me. How our hearts should rejoice in the Lord when we remember his continued presence with us and his constant care over us. “He that keepeth Israel doth neither slumber or sleep.” Oh how much his children have to be thankful for! And how our hearts should praise him for the wonders of his grace! Among the unnumbered blessings how thankful I am for the salvation of divine truth! I have been made to see that Jesus not only saved my soul because he loved me, but he saved my soul that I might be the means in his hands of saving others. Oh the solemnity of life, and the fearful responsibility resting upon every saved soul! Dear Jesus, help us to be willing to help others as thou wast while here on earth. Our lives and all we have belong to him, so then we should honor him in all we do. How necessary to keep all on the altar, then our every want will be supplied. There is not a blessing we need, but is found in the blessed Son of God. We honor him most when we trust him fully. We honor him when we seek to imitate him in all we do. We honor him when we speak of him. We honor him when we are willing to walk with him here below. Oh blessed Spirit, live in our hearts and help as to make this the whole aim of our life. Because his word says, “Them that honor me I will honor.”

Your sister saved and trusting all in his hands.

GOD’S WORK IS MOVING.

_____

For the past few months the dear workers here at the Trumpet office have felt very much impressed that the time has come when God would be pleased in giving us a Paper Folder, for we as workers here can see the great need of such a machine.

In order to give the dear brothers and sisters an understanding of the need of this purchase, it will probably be necessary to tell you a little about the work here.

Eight years ago when my brother and I came here to work for Jesus to help in sending forth the gospel truth over this darkened earth, there were just six of us as workers in the office at that time. Only one paper was then printed, and that was only issued every two weeks. Only two or three tracts were then issued, yet each of the workers were kept busy and had all they could do. God had been raising up holy, men and women in every direction and sending them forth to proclaim the glad tidings to lost souls; and as the work kept spreading it was soon made manifest that good holy literature was needed to give the people. God put it upon some of the dear ones to write some tracts, and later on, books were written. We did the best we could in getting them out with the press we then had. As the work kept increasing, God would send in other workers, and we soon saw that we could not do the work with the press we then had, so the Lord opened the way for us to purchase a new press, and since that time other new machinery has been added, as the Lord saw we needed.

In order that you may see how the work has been on the increase, it might be well to state the number and amonnt of publications issued at the present time. Each week 7,500 GOSPEL TRUMPETS are printed, and sent to all parts of the United States and Canada, and many of them cross the waters to foreign lands. Many reach homes where God’s dear ministers have never been, and are the only source, outside the Bible, from which they receive their spiritual teaching. Of the number of Trumpets printed, 3,000 are sent to paying subscribers, and 1,500 are sent free to those who are too poor to pay. The remainder are sent out for free distribution to the workers in the field, to missions and other places wherever good use can be made of them.

3,500 copies of the SHINNING LIGHT are sent out every two weeks, and about one-half of them are for free distribution.

850 copies of the EVANGELIUMS POSAUNA, are printed, and go forth on their mission every two weeks to cheer the hearts of the dear German people. A greater part of them are given out free, as it has not yet been a year since the publication of them was commenced.

Besides the three papers which we print, we now have over sixty different kinds of books and tracts on various subjects and doctrinal points; and a number of them are printed in the German language.

Now all this advance and increase in the work has not been without some effort. Many times the enemy would rally all his forces and try in every way possible to overthrow the work which God had planted here, but he never could succeed, for God was able to care for his own. By much labor and prayer, and free-will offerings which God has put it upon his children to send, he has brought the work through thus far, and God’s name is being glorified and the blessed Evening Light is being brought to many a poor soul from the literature that leaves this office. It would encourage many of you if you could but read some of the many letters which we receive here at the office, about how so many have been brought to see the light on the Scripture, through a tract or a paper which some one had handed them. And in many instances these little messengers that go forth from here are the means of opening up the way for God’s ministers to enter into a community and hold a meeting.

But all these tracts and papers are not sent out without much labor in getting them ready. The type is to be set, and then they are printed, and afterwards folded up and got ready for mailing. Each sheet of paper is folded separately, by hand, and thus you can plainly see the amount of labor required in folding. We now have enough tracts printed to keep a number of hands busy at hard work for several months, which work could all be done by one person with a Folding Machine, and thus put the extra hands to other much needed office work.

Now we do not feel that God wants us to buy a Folding Machine and go in debt for it, for our paper bills now are quite heavy, and besides this we expect to build a new press room this fall, as we are very much crowded for want of space. This will take a few hundred dollars, and we do not feel like going in any deeper for the purchase of a Folder.

During the June camp meeting Bro’s B. E. Warren and W. G. Schell were here at the office helping to mail an issue of the Trumpet, and they saw the great need of such a machine being put here at work for God. They were intending to present the matter at the camp meeting, but for some cause or other it was not brought up. The day the brethren left they stated that they would gladly do their part. And now if all the other dear workers in the field will do the same and present the matter to the different churches, and then by all of God’s people doing their duty, we know that God will supply the means with which to buy this machine.

The Folders range in price from $200 to $2,000, and for three or four hundred dollars a machine could be purchased which would fold papers, but one that will also fold books and tracts will cost between five-hundred and one thousand dollars.

We often hear the report that the workers at the office are getting rich. If such were to come and live with us awhile they would soon change their minds. There are now thirty-five of us here at the office, and each one is giving their whole time free to the service of God, and all they receive is their board and clothes. Last month thirty-five of us lived off of less than $4000, in order that payments could be met on the bills. But we can praise God that we are willing to sacrifice and deny ourselves of the luxuries of this world, that we may be able to send forth rich feasts of spiritual things to the many hungry souls who are starving on every hand.

This is God’s work here, and each of his children should feel just as much under obligation to help bear the burden as those who are working here. Now let each one take this matter earnestly to God, and see if he will not show you a duty to do.

By the 15th of October we will give you a statement of the amount sent in for the Folding Machine.

Dear Saints of God: We have just closed a glorious meeting near Sandersville. A good many were re claimed, and others saved that had never been, and many opposers of holiness convinced of the truth. The meeting lasted over first and second Sundays. The crowd and interest increased to the last; the saints were wonderfully built up. We left many seeking God, and sad hearts because we had to say good bye. Bro. Jones and Sister Thomas helped in the meeting. Sister Underwood that was not able at first to go to meeting was healed of the Lord and made able to go out and enjoy the meeting. I preach here in the court house tonight and then go to La. I want to ask all to pray for my babe, that it may be healed. Love to all. Your brother and sister in the one body,

Dear Ones in Jesus: Since my last letter I can report victory in the name of Jesus. Some have been converted and some sanctified through the power of God, and the Lord is steadily Increasing the interest in the meetings, and quite a number are coming out clear in the light as fast as it is being revealed. The Lord has a good many honest sonls here who are praising him that he has sent his pure gospel to San Francisco. During the past week the Lord chose to strengthen the faith of his servant and others mightily by sending dear Brother and Sister Brunner of Kansas to visit us. They came directly from the Elberton camp meeting and confirmed verbally the report of the mighty works done there through the name of the holy child Jesus. The Lord is sending me some consecrated workers who are assisting me much in the Lord. We hold street meetings every evening, also meetings in the hall. Commencing with next week we will devote two meetings in the week to preaching in the Swedish language. Pray much for us here that the Word may have free course to the people’s hearts, and that they may be willing to follow Him. Your brother in Christ, separated unto the gospel,

Dear Saints of God: After we left the June camp meeting we went to Hope and held an eight days meeting with good results. The little ones were settled down much in God. Before we left there fourteen happy saints followed the Lord in the ordinance of baptism. Before we left, Bro. Sheldon joined us, and we went to Johnstown and held a short grove meeting; there were a few consecrations. From there we went to the Tekonsha camp meeting which was truly a feast to our souls. God began working from the first and gave glorious victory from the first to last of the meeting. Souls came flocking to the altar and in most cases received benefits from the Lord. Bro. and Sister Eldridge were there, whom God used much in sending forth the judgments of his Word. God did wonderfully back his word by signs following. The sick were healed, the deaf ears were unstopped. To God be all the praise and glory. From there we came here, found the meeting commenced already. We expect a glorious time here, God is at work; a number of souls at the altar this afternoon. From here we go to Grand Rapids. We ask all the dear saints to remember us in your prayers that God may use us much to his glory. Amen.

But we esteemed it a very great pleasure to preach the word of God to the dear saints and those who wished to know the truth. And certainly those who were not too bitter to come had no evil to say. Six followed Jesus in baptism, and a goodly number participated in the washing of the saints’ feet, and the Lord’s supper Sunday evening July tweny-eighth.

We came on next day to Auburn camp meeting. The attendance was about the same as last year, Salvation work went on gloriously from first to last, especially in the day services, and good attendance at nights from town and the surrounding country. Interest is rising concerning this reformation in this part. A large box of tracts was eagerly received yesterday and last night by the multitude of earnest listeners. We kept no account of the consecrations and cases of healing. Nine were baptized and about eighty observed feet washing, and the loaf and cup. A goodly number of ministers and workers present We go to the camp meeting near Thompson. Neb. Yours ail for God,

Geo. L. Cole and Co.

Dear Brethren in Christ: I wish to give a brief report of the three meetings held in Iowa of late. The Fairport camp intuiting was a blessing to our souls and the souls of many others. A few found God and also a few sanctified. The meeting continued almost three weeks, and the last week of the meeting was much hindered on the account of the much rain that fell. Our next meeting was Buffalo. At this place God most wonderfully helped us in dealing out the real truth. A few souls were made free in Jesus and about ten or twelve baptized. The meeting continued about one week. We then moved to Lime City where we pitched tent in the name of Jesus and began meeting the night of Aug. 2d and held nine days. A few souls made free. The helpers in the meeting were Bro. and Sister Bunn, from Kingston Mo., Bro. C. Akers of Ia., and Bro. and Sister Warren and my wife. Bro. Warren took sick at the close of the Fairport C. M. and was not able to preach the Word, until the last night of the Lime City meeting. God helped me wonderfully in the preaching of the Word. Bro. and Sister Warren and my wife and I returned home to attend the Beaver Dam camp meeting, while Bro. C. Akers remained in those parts to do baptizing and Bro. Bunn and wife went to Center Point, Ia. to visit relation. We now are in the midst of a most precious camp meeting at Beaver Dam. God is blessing us and souls are coming to the altar. At the close of this meeting I will pitch the tent in our town (Burkett), then at Palestine, thence near Lafayette, Ind. Brethren pray for us and the work. We remain as ever, your brothers and sisters all the Lord’s.

Hebbardsville, O., Aug. 15, ’95.

Dear Saints of God: After leaving Grand Junction camp meeting, we came to Richwood, where we held a ten days meeting which was a glorious seed-sowing time. Several souls were saved, and my dear aunt Angie Evens came out of sectism

and received a glorious experience. We preached at Prospect twice in the Baptist house and once on the street and sowed good seed. We then came to Hebbardsville, our old native home where we were born and raised, and held about ten days grove meeting. My dear old grand father renounced sectism and got down before the Lord for a clean heart. People were wonderfully awakened to the truth. We then went to “Peach Ridge,” three miles east of Athens where a beautiful grove was seated and all prepared for work. The first night a large attentive audience greeted us, it being a place where the evening light had never been preached before. God gave us sweeping victory. We had two and three meetings a day, and the attendance was good throughout. The meeting closed Monday night, resulting after two weeks labor, in the salvation of between twenty-five and thirty souls. On Monday we went to the river where eighteen dear souls were buried with Christ, one of which accepted Christ after coming to the water. And one among the eighteen was my dear father. Praise God! To God be all the glory! There are several more that want to be baptized soon. And now as I feel that I shall not be in this part of the state or country long, I want to urge on the brethren or workers in these parts to call on the dear saints at Athens whenever you can. Address Bro. C. C. Robinson or Sister Jos. Love. I expect to go to Beaver Dam camp meeting and get my boy to Grand Junction as soon as possible. I would love to hear from the dear saints in Ohio that were expecting me to come to their places, because I have more calls than I can fill and I want to fill as many as I can and travel as little as possible. It you are expecting others that are nearer than myself, I feel that God would be glorified in me filling calls nearer home,

I would like to say to those that are wanting the music of those songs of mine, that I have not had time yet but as soon as the Lord opens the way I expect to get them published I have the words printed, or you can get them at the Trumpet Office. Your humble brother saved, and in the one body,

Dear Saints of the Most High: At the close of the grove meeting at Tekoa the Lord put it on us to come here. Not stopping to ask why, our hearts responded amen to the sweet will of God. We had been planning to go to the Oregon camp meeting, but keeping our ears open to the voice of the Lord our faces were turned toward Spokane. Bro. Byers and Bro. Byrum had been here about two weeks opening up the work and seeking out some of the hungry and needy souls, and felt it would be God’s will to pitch the tabernacle and hold meetings as long as circumstances would permit in the order of God. Meetings have been held in the tent a little over two weeks with good results and the work is only begun. Bro. J. W. Daugherty was with us and was used of God with much freedom in presenting the Word. Bro. Byrum left the fifth for Woodburn and other points on the coast. Bro. Byers remained with us and carried on the work until the night of the twelfth. He took his leave for the South aiming to stop off at the Woodburn camp meeting and from there go to his home in California. Now we are left here to carry on the work. We feel very little and weak for such a great work, but we praise the Lord the work is started in Spokane. It is a needy place. The picture cannot be overdrawn. We find many that have left the sects in search of something better, the most of which are foreigners, and the larger per cent of them are Germans, some Swed.. some Danish people. The … … need of a German preach-.. ..y on the work among them in teaching the pure gospel. The Spirit of God will talk to some one. “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear what the Spirit saith.” We feel God leading us to carry on the work in the public distribution of tracts and selling books on the various Bible subjects ect in addition to the gospel work in the tent. Any one feeling led to help by their means in that work, God will reward them and the truth will get to the people. God has opened up the way and has given us favor with the city authorities to distribute and sell the gospel literature and books in the city. And the Lord has furnished us with a neat case for that purpose, and hope to receive soon a full supply of books and tracts. Pray much for us and the work here.

Anderson, S. C., Aug. 15, 1895.

Dear Saints of God: The camp meeting commenced Aug. 1, as announced. The mighty presence and power of God was felt from the beginning. Not many souls were saved, but a general cleaning up took place. Much threatening was made and at one time seventy-five or a hundred men gathered in the woods abont a mile away and sent for some of the brethren and tried to force them to submit to the will of the community in conducting the meeting. The great opposition came up nominally over two colored saints, one from Charleston, S. C. and the other from Augusta, Ga. These saints with a few colored people from this neighborhood occupied seats in the rear of the room. All they did was to sit peaceably in the room and testify to salvation when opportunity afforded. The general custom of the country is to extend to the colored people the privilege of seats in the back part of ail meeting houses. The only difference between God’s way of doing business and sect machinery was that in the saints meetings they testified when the Spirit moved, but in Babylon, after all the whites had spoken. Because of this the country for many miles away was aroused and everywhere the cry went up. “Negro equality!” All admitted that we violated neither the laws of God nor yet of man, but feared it would finally lead to equality between the races. God most wonderfully used this thing to purge the assembly of the people. Quite a number were professing entire sanctification at this place, testifying that nothing could ever move them, not even the burning stake. But when this little test of their reputation in the estimation of the people came up, although it was far short of the flames, it showed up several who were not where they testified to be. The devil had run in a compromise policy and God was not pleased. He knew that there were too many here for God to get glory, many professing to be saints, who were not right at heart; hence the purging. See Judges 7:1-8. The remnant with victory in their souls and the swore in their hands are now marching forth against the enemy. The beast is dying hard, nevertheless his death is sure, and the church is established in this place. Truly God is here. Bro’s. J. M. Campbell, J. D. Gillespie, C. A. Kay and Bro. D. R. Brown, (who lately escaped from the folds of sectism and was baptized) go forth to carry the news of salvation to perishing souls as the dear Lord may direct. Bro. R. J. Smith of Charleston, S. C., and Sister Jane Williams of Augusta, Ga., both colored, go forth full of the fire and Spirit of God to publish salvation to their people. May God direct every one by his Spirit and may their example testify to the gospel they preach. See 1 Tim. 4:12. This meeting was one of glorious victory. Some dead branches were purged out and now the church moves without these hindrances. This test on the color line showed the difference between sanctified souls and professors of such. Some were filled with malice and prejudice and yet professing to

be sanctified, whereas they were not even justified. See 1 Pet. 2:1-2. Jas. 2:1, 9. God will not justify the wicked nor by any means clear the guilty. Ex. 23:7. 34:7. May God wake the people up to the Bible standard. Ten were baptized in all. Bro. D. R. Brown was ordained elder in the church of the living God. At this place, like many others in the South, sect preachers warn their members against attending the meetings of the saints, Even threaten to cast them out of church (sect). They know that if the people hear the pure gospel they are no more sectarians. Their only hope is to keep the people ignorant of God’s word. Pray much for us and the work in the South. Yours in the love and fellowship of Jesus,

J. F. Lundy and Co.

TESTIMONIES.

“Thy Testimonies are Wonderful.” – Psa. 119:129

__________

Fair Haven, Ill.

Dear Saints of God: I feel led to testify of the goodness of God to me, for truly he is a present help in every time of need, that is, every hour of my life. Oh I do praise God for the abiding Comforter. Though surrounded by many cares and trials, I know that if this earthly house were to dissolve I have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. I do praise God for the way he is leading me day by day. And he gives me grace to trust him for all things. Our hearts were cheered to day to have dear Sister Byers come to our little prayer meeting. There were five of us in all, enough to claim the promise, and his word is true. He does cheer and bless our waiting souls, and gives grace and glory, and withholds nothing that is for our good. Pray for us here that we maybe kept up upon the rock, and doing all the will of God as fast as it is revealed to us. Your saved sister,

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: I have been impressed for some time to write my testimony. I praise God this morning for leading me out of sectism and placing me in the church of the living God. Glory be to Jesus, I am sweetly saved and resting on his promises. When I was eighteen years of age I was led to God and I know he pardoned my sins, but never hearing the gospel preached in all its purity I joined the Baptist sect, thinking I was doing right, and lived in that faith most of the time. But when I would hear any of them say the time of divine healing was past I could never say amen, for I truly believed in divine healing of body as well as soul. So I wasted sixteen years of my life trying to believe I was where God wanted me to be, and still I knew his word promised us many rich blessings which we never called for. I thought I could not live without sinning more or less every day. But praise the Lord, I heard his blessed word preached in all its purity, and now I am living for Jesus, trusting him for everything, for which I am richly blessed. We are living in a very wicked place. Pray for us that we may have grace sufficient for all our wants. Your sister in the one body,

I. N. Kretzer.

I feel that the Lord wants me to add my testimony in the Gospel Trumpet for his glory. Fourteen years ago the Lord for Christ’s sake forgave me of all my actual sins while working in the back woods near South Haven, Mich. Praise his holy name! I knew, that the Lord had done his work, for truly I had found peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, and my neighbors soon found it out too. I was soon invited into the M. E. sect, but I told them I had given myself to the Lord and if he led me in that direction I would join them. Soon after I heard the evening light taught, then I could see the confusion in Babylon as never

before. I went to a Free Methodist camp meeting and heard sanctification taught by one of their ablest men. The next morning while sitting just out side of the woods reading the Word, the man came along that I heard the night before. I ask ed him what sanctification meant; he gave me no understanding of that state of grace. Soon after I heard the saints preach the Word in the fullness of the gospel. I felt there was more for me. Still it was sometime before I could see clearly what I should do, but truly I was hungering and thirsting after righteousness, and the Lord did fill me, Sunday May 19, 1895. I could never doubt the second work since that time any more than I could the first. Praise the Lord! Last spring the Lord sent Bro. Jacobson and wife here to preach to the people. The Lord did teach me some wonderful lessons through the brother and sister. I renewed my consecration and the Lord has wonderfuly settled me down in his truth. Praise his name! When they started for the camp meeting at Wash, the eleventh of June my wife went with them! I felt the Lord wanted to test my consecration. I do praise the Lord for the test. We have throwed away medicines of all kinds in the name of our God, and since my little boy and I have been alone he was taken sick. I told him the Lord wouldn’t have him sick long. The Lord led me to kneel by his bed side and pray for him. When the Lord gave me the witness that Eddie was healed, I arose from my knees and he looked as well as ever. I told him that the Lord had healed him, he testified to the same; and we give God all the glory. Oh dear ones, live humble and the Lord will give you showers of blessings, while you are at work in the field or in the shop, or elsewhere. I stand all redeemed by the blood of Christ, justified, and sanctified by a second work of grace. Amen.

Dear Saints of the Living God: I feel led to write my testimony to the glory of God, as it is my first. I will tell you of the saving and keeping power of Jesus with me. Thirteen years ago I was converted in a Methodist camp meeting. I had been sprinkled when a babe; but as I grew to womanhood I could not understand that as the mode the Savior said we should follow. So I became dissatisfied with it, and wishing the minister to immerse me, he said he would do as I wished, but he did not believe in it. (How could any child of God do what was contrary to his will? Oh such blindness!) But having received light from God I refused. Praise his holy name! Shortly after this I was united in marriage, and my husband being a Baptist, I joined that sect with him and was baptized, as we were taught we must join some church (as they call it). May the Lord have mercy on them and bring them out of Babylon is my prayer. I went on in this state for eleven years and lost all the salvation I ever had. But being blinded, I thought I was still a Christian, and when God sent one of his flying messengers to our part of the country two years ago and the message was delivered in its purity, the holy Spirit settled its conviction on me as I thought, for sanctification, and so I prayed for it. But I knew I had sinned against God, and was begging forgiveness for that at the same time, and for two days and nights my burden was almost more than I could bare. But when I payed the full price it was then my burden rolled away. Glory to his holy name! Oh how happy I was, for the dear Savior had kept this promise with me, and had taken my burden on himself. Glory to Jesus! So I went on for a year or more, then it came to me that I was only justified. But I tried to think it was the devil; but it kept coming, so I thought the way to have it fully decided was to take it in earnest prayer to the Lord; so I did. He clearly showed me I was only justified, so I decided to not put it off any longer, and I prayed earnestly for the blessed Savior to sanctify my soul. And I am praising God to-day for answering my prayers. Glory to God for his goodness to me! God saves me and is keeping me each day of my life. He has completely taken the love of the world out of me, and pride out of my heart. All I care for is doing the will of my Father. Husband and I do all we can for the Lord, in talking and giving out tracts and Trumpets. We are alone here, but there are a few of the saints about twelve miles from us. Many are the persecutions we receive, but Christ is our strength. He is our physician for both soul and body. Oh how sweet to trust in Jesus!

Yours in the one body,

Alice Dunning.

HEATH. — Edward J. Heath departed this life Aug. 14, 1895; aged twenty-four years, three months and eleven days. Deceased was a brother of Bro. Carlos Heath, of German Hill. His suffering was long and severe, but he bore it patiently. A few months ago he repented of his sins, and realized the blessed saving power of Jesus. At his request we with some of the brethren went and prayed for his healing. But he was not healed, though the good Lord eased his pain to some extent. His brother then called for prayers through the Trumpet. But God saw it would be better to take him home than to heal him. Anna, daughter of Bro. Jesse Spurlock and wife, died Aug. 10; aged eighteen years, ten months and twelve days. Sister Anna was only ill about two weeks. Although most of her life was spent in sin, yet she left glorious and heart-cheering evidence of being saved. She was earnestly entreated during her illness to make preparation for to meet God, which she took good heed to and in the very evening of her life she was converted. She repented and claimed the promise the day before her death, but did not manifest a real satisfaction that she was accepted of God until a few hours previous to death, when she received the witness from heaven of her acceptance, and for about an hour she praised God with shouting and clapping of hands which she continued almost until the last breath. She informed the family that she did not care to stay here and for them not to weep for her but rejoice. Her last words were “Good-by mother,” and then sweetly fell to sleep in Jesus without a struggle. May God comfort the family, and may those that are unsaved not wait until the eleventh hour. ZYLLMAN. — Bro. Fredrick J. Zyllman was born in Friesland, Holland, Europe, Feb. 4, 1858, and moved to this country at the age of thirteen. Was married at the age of twenty-five to Clara Anders. He was an infidel for a number of years because of the unrighteous living of others, but was converted to God Sept. 7, 1894, after five years of decline by the dreadful consumption, and sanctified wholly Feb. 2, 1895. Although he belonged to the Baptist sect, he lived a very holy life and had marvellous faith in God. On hearing of the evening light he joyfully accepted it and renounced all sectism and took the holy way of God. He was always open and ready to drink in the present truth. Whne seemingly near death, with the death palor, he sent for ns and we went and anointed him in the name of Jesus and God wonderfully healed him and he gained in flesh and strength for over two weeks and breathed through his lungs well. Lying on his left side broke his right lung and he bled till he was too weak to rally. He died with triumphant faith in Jesus praising God till near the last. Frequently I would say, “Praise the Lord Bro. Zyllman,” and he always responded. Three were, justified by his bedside. They said they wanted to live as he did and die as he did. The funeral was held in the large Baptist chapel, where we had the privilege of preaching the gospel to a large congregation of attentive listeners. The whole of the services was with the sacred presence and approval of the living God. Heaven seemed so near all day. I believe his death and funeral services has been to advance the cause and glory of God wonderfully. He leave a wife and one son who are saved, God bless them.

ANTIORDINANCE-ISM.

_____

A BROTHER writes that an antiordinance preacher is laboring in Rolla Mo, by the name of Staton. “Some have gone to the altar, and they would offer a prayer, then get up and he would say he knew they were saved. One man rose in the congregation and asked an interest in the prayers of God’s people; said he wanted to live right. The preacher said, ‘You are all right now if you will just say so,’ teaching a mere reformation without repentance. They collected at a sister’s house last Monday night to go around and collect money on the streets, and I don’t think that is according to God’s will. There are some of the saints take part in his meetings. What do you think of it?”

In answer would say that in this matter as in all others we think just as Jesus thinks, that “he that loveth me keepeth my commandments.” “He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings.” Again, Jesus says, that the Holy Spirit he would send would guide us into all truth. But every antiordinance man rejects some of the most precious commandments, and rejects the truth. Therefore no antiordinance man truly loves Christ, nor is led by the Holy Spirit.

We also think of such men just as the apostle Paul expressed himself in 1 Tim. 6:3-5 — “If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; he is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.” Did not the very words of the Lord Jesus enjoin in the commission that all who believe in him should be baptized by the hands of the minister? Did he not give the bread and the fruit of the vine, and say, “This do in remembrance of me?” Did he not wash the disciples, feet, and say to them, “I have given you an example that ye should do as I have done unto you?” Do antiordinance men consent to these wholsome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ? No, they utterly discard them. Why do they do so? What ails all such men? Here is the plague of their hearts: “He is proud, knowing nothing, and doting about questions.” Then to sum up the conclusion, antiordinance men love not the Lord Jesus Christ, and are proud, and spiritually ignorant, and are contentious; all of which shows a pernicious spirit of the devil.

There may be innocent converts in this antichrist doctrine, who had been educated into the same, and have not learned better. But we confidently affirm by our knowledge of God, and the leading of his Spirit, that no person can be converted to God long enough to become a preacher of the gospel, and not be taught by the Word and Spirit that it is his duty to follow the steps of Christ in his ordinances. Therefore every antiordinance teacher and preacher is a “heretic, subverted and sinneth.” They are destitute of the Spirit of God. If an angel from heaven were to come down here and teach us that we should not follow the ordinances of Christ, in the name of Jesus we would know he were a fallen angel, and we would rebuke him in the name of Jesus. And so all who really know and follow Christ have no fellowship with these false teachers. For your soul’s sake, do not go to their meetings, nor bid them God’s speed. They are all transformed angels of the devil, and your soul will get tainted and clouded as sure as you take them into your fellowship.

__________

QUESTIONS.

_____

Did all the disciples fall from grace to a backslidden condition on the night of Christ’s betrayal?

There is no proof that they all really backslid. They were all discouraged, and their faith largely failed; but no doubt the attitude of their hearts were the same; therefore as soon as they learned that Christ was risen they all found their hearts cleaving to him just as before. One of the abominable tricks of the devil is to get brethren to agitating such questions that do not concern us in the least. What difference is it to us whether those first disciples all backslid or not? How the devil laughs to get brethren to break the unity of the Spirit and backslide themselves, debating over the question whether the apostles backslid or not. We solemnly warn all God’s children to watch and pray, and never harp over any question of no profit. And we must say in the name of Jesus that any person who is disposed to raise such unfruitful questions, and harp on them, is lacking the Spirit of God.

Is it right for a child of God to loan money and receive interest?

This is another question the New Testament does not directly legislate upon. For a brother in good circumstances to oppress the poor, and especially his brethren, with interest, when able to loan them without usury, would doubtless be wrong, and tend to spiritual death. But men may be so situated in business that their money is their stock in trade, and it would therefore be no more reasonable to refuse them interest than it would be to demand of store keepers to sell all their goods at exact cost prices. If you have money to loan, put it into God’s hands and let him direct you in its use. If you have none to lend, then let others attend to their business, and let us see that we meet the responsibilities that rest upon us, and do all things to the glory of God.

Can a man go to the poles and vote to the glory of God? would it be right to do so?

All voting in the elections of this world is below the plane of Bible holiness. We are not of the world even as Christ is not of the world. John 17:14. And like Christ, we accept what favors, and endure what wrongs, governments bestow on us, without complaint; pray for them in authority, but do not help to run the affairs of this world. However a person may sincerely think it is a duty to vote, consequently not sin in doing so. It would not be sin to him nor should we regard it as absolutely a sin for any one to do so, it not being directly forbidden. But the soul that walks with Christ in holiness simply has no inclinations in that direction.

In Mat. 10:28, who is the one to fear? is it God or the devil?

Neither here nor in the parallel passage in Luke 12:4, 5 are we plainly told who the one is we are to fear. Since it is true that God does not destroy soul or body in the sense of blasting their hope, and the devil does really destroy both by leading them into sin, it might be inferred that Satan is the one we are to fear. But that it is God we are to fear is evident from these facts; first, the Word nowhere tells us to fear the devil, but, “Sanctify the Lord of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.” Isa. 8:13. Second, Though God does not destroy soul or body in the sense of receiving them, he does nevertheless destroy both soul and body in eternal hell, in the sense of banishing and punishing them, after men have destroyed themselves by sin, as we read in 2 Thess. 1:9.

Is it right for saints to marry sinners?

No; it is positively forbidden in the word of God. 1 Cor 7:39. 2 Cor. 6:14. While the latter text also forbids yoking up in earthly associations, it must necessarily include yoking up in marriage with a sinner. There is no real adaptation or good sense in such a union.

__________

The Punishment of Sin.

A few words upon “Non-Eternity.”

_____

Can a sinner atone for his sins, either in this life or in the next? “Without shedding of blood there is no remission.” Heb. 9:22. “It is the blood that maketh atonement for the soul.” Lev. 17:11. Our sin and iniquity have separated us from God. Isa. 59:2. How can they be put away? Can any amount of work or suffering on our part blot them out? “No,” must be the answer of all who allow the authority of God’s word. Eph. 2:9. Christ alone could meet God’s claims on the sinner, on account of his sins, and that could be done only by dying in the sinner’s stead. 1 Cor, 15:3. His blood was shed. What a sacrifice! How great the debt to need such payment — the life of God’s dear Son! But what is taught by the doctrine of non-eternity of punishment? Simply this: That a few years (more or less) of the sufferings of hell, will meet God’s claim on the sinner on account of his sins. They allow that the sinner does suffer; but why, I ask, unless it be to meet God’s claims, is he found in hell? “The wicked shall be annihilated,” they say. But are his sins annihilated? Are they atoned for? If not, they are still joined to him; they are not put away. Their estimates of Christ and His atoning work on the cross must be very low, who would attribute a like result to the sinner’s torment. It is a denial that the cross of Christ is the only way of putting away sin; and if the sinner in hell by suffering, meets God’s claims against him, does not justice demand that he should be restored to the condition that man occupied before the fall? When Christ met the claims of God on account of our sins, God raised Him from the dead; whereas the sinner, when he has suffered for his own sins to God’s satisfaction, is according to them, to be obliterated. They say, “Sin has made man what he is — a sinner.” How can all the righteous claims of God be met in the case of any one sinner? Christ on the cross has fully satisfied God, and those who have condemned and loathed themselves, and justified God, can now see in Him the One who redeemed them, who has paid their debt to the uttermost. But the unbeliever is found in hell, where those go whose debt has not been paid. “What saith the scripture?” “Verily, I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence until thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.” Luke 12:59.

CAN HE PAY IT? CAN HE SUFFER IT OUT?

From whence does a sinner get existence beyond the grave, if he has a soul that never ceases to exist? From God, they say. What is this existence given for? I ask. It is that the sinner may settle the account standing against him by suffering for a time? What is this but atonement, AND WHERE DOES SCRIPTURE SPEAK OF THE ATONING WORK OF THE SINNER, BESIDES THE ATONING WORK OF CHRIST? Alas, that any should contend for such a doctrine! Satan would have men think little of their sins, and still less of Christ and his atonement for sin.

Are you prepared to bear the weight of God’s fearful judgment? Are you satisfied to dwell forever — yes, forever and ever — in the torments of hell, with the smoke of your torment ascending up forever and ever? Rev. 14:11.

IN HELL THERE IS NO RANSOM,

but now God is calling, “Save from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom.” Christ died for the ungodly, helpless sinner. Rom. 5:6. Own before God your true condition, as “lost” and “helpless,” then you could say: Christ died for my sins, and did all that God saw necessary to deliver from eternal punishment (Mat. 24:46.) and save to eternal glory.

TESTIMONIES.

“Thy Testimonies are Wonderful.” – Psa. 119:129.

Dear Saints: I feel that Jesus has made me free and his blood cleanses me from all sin. I feel that he is calling me to work in his vineyard for the rescuing of perishing souls. I

have been much interested in the work of rescueing the fallen girls in the cities; and believe it would be well if there could be country homes where a number could be taken, away from the wicked influence of city life. Some brother may have a small farm to consecrate to the service of the Lord in that way, which would make a comfortable home where such ones may find employment, and also be taught the ways of truth and righteousness. I would like to have any of the saints who pass through here, to stop and see me. Yours in Him,

Emma Beaird.

Dear Saints: I feel led this blessed Sabbath evening to write a few lines for the Trumpet. I was reading a Trumpet when God showed me the true way and that the saints were right. I did not care about having much to do with the Trumpet till then, but since that I have loved it. Oh I do praise God for salvation that saves and sanctifies me and keeps me free from sin as I go along in this wicked world! I do thank him for this blessed evening light; and for bringing me into it. I am so glad he spared my life to see the light and walk in it. It is so glorious to my soul. I would not go back in sectism for all the world. When God brought me out of sectism he took it all out of me so clean I could truly say I was free. And I am still free from it and expect to remain so the rest of my life. Pray for me that I may always live to please God at all times. Oh praise God forever and ever! Your sister saved and sanctified and kept by the mighty power of God,

Florence Blue.

Dear Ones in Christ: God has given me health, strength, and above all things, salvation, which gives me perfect peace in my soul. I have given myself entirely to God and am trusting him for all things. I take him for my helper in all times of trouble, and he just brings me out victorious every time. I feel so thankful to the great God of heaven for redeeming my soul, for taking me out of the miry clay and placing me on the solid rock which is Christ Jesus. Oh we can never thank him enough for his mercy and long-suffering toward us! Let us all be faithful soldiers, standing firm on his word, and lay aside every weight, and the sin that doth so easily beset us, and run with patience the race set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith. I do praise God for his saving and keeping power, which keeps me every day of my life. It has been five years since he wrought a great miracle on me, which I know he did for some good; for he is good and all he does is for the best. I was struck with lightning five years ago, and I know it was a chastening to myself. It was for two or three weeks I was unconscious, not knowing anything at all in this world. But while I knew nothing about things of this world, my mind was centered on things above. I know that God was with me and comforted me in my afflictions. I saw angels flying around me, and they were singing to me, trying to cheer me up, but I wanted to go with them. When they started it seemed like this world was nothing to me, although it did not seem like I was on the earth. But I did not want to return; I longed to go on to that home where my dear Savior and the holy angels are waiting for me. But the dear Lord wanted me to stay awhile longer. At that time I saw the power of God manifested. I suffered very much, but when I think of the pains that Jesus bore for us I could bear it without murmuring, for I could say that with his blessings pain was pleasure. God help us all to pray for the world everywhere, for the poor lost souls that are going on to destruction. Pray for me that I may be kept low and humble at the feet of Jesus. Your sister in Christ,

Sallie Epps.
