A Prayer Song.

_____

There is a God, I now believe,
There is a devil too;
There is a hell, there is a heaven,
Then whither will I go?

There is a land, where crystal streams
Flow through the flowery plains,
There God the Father giveth light,
There Christ forever reigns.

In these blest fields I want a home,
A home beyond the sky,
Where all is peace and happiness,
And love will never die.

Then fill my lamp with oil, O God,
And may it brightly shine,
As I go to the marriage feast
With joy and bliss divine.

I want to wear a spotless robe,
Washed clean and free from sin,
And hope to gain a starry crown.
Then heaven to enter in.

E. T. Tillapaugh.

OUR WALK ON EARTH.

_____

LOOKING out over the world, and seeing precious and immortal souls running, as it were, with a mighty rush to meet their doom, which we see without doubt is to be eternal destruction; and even many of God’s little ones being deceived and drawn away by the enemy of their souls to walk in ways that are not good, it makes our heart ache within us, and causes us to feel that a few words on this subject would be encouraging to some that might be almost persuaded by the enemy to give way, and cause them to renew their covenant and to start out with renewed energy to run the Christian race. God is so kind; he has promised to teach us.

“And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow into it. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. Oh house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the Lord.” Isa. 2:2, 3, 5. “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.” Eph. 5:8-10. Now we see something on our part to be done in order to have the approval of God; and let us not think for a moment that God will overlook our slothfulness and wayward walking. Paul says, “See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Eph. 5:15, 16.

Brethren, can we not see that the devil is in the land to day, and is doing his utmost to deceive and to overthrow? If we can, then let us be wide awake and doing with our might what our hands find to do, and not forget that God sees us. Paul again says, “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.” Col. 2:6, 7. So you see, we are not only to walk in him but we are to increase and abound more and more. And John says, he that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. 1 Jno. 2:6. But how is it, if we say we are of God and are walking in the light? does not Paul say to hold fast the profession of your faith without wavering? True, the Bible teaches that, but if we have none, we had best get faith and fellowship, and then profess it with all our heart. John says, 1 Jno. 1:6, — “If we say we have fellowship with him and walk in darkness, we lie and do not the truth.” Again 2:9-11, — “He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.” “But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.” Jno. 11:10. To walk in darkness or night means anything but straight for God, for darkness represents sin, and the wages of sin is death.” Rom. 6:23.

Oh brother and sister, let us live and walk with God; let us strive to have it said of us that the world has been benefited by us having lived in it. Remember we are continually sowing seed of some kind and will bring forth fruit of some sort, either good or corrupt; so let us so walk that we may bring forth fruit unto God, lest darkness come upon us. Jesus, said, Jno. 12:35, — “Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you; for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.” We understand by this that when the enemy gets the mind blurred and the understanding darkened, we are apt to take bitter for sweet, and light for darkness, etc.; and when we get in this condition we begin to imagine great revelations from God, and that he is going to make some spiritual wonder of us, and every one is crooked but ourself. How what’s the matter? Ah, what saith God? “Let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.” “But if we walk in the light as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” 1 Jno.1:7. How do we get these blessings? By keeping the commandments. John says “He that saith, I know him and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar and the truth is not in him.” 1 Jno. 2:4. And Jesus says, Jno. 12:50, “And I know his commandment is life everlasting.” “Here is the patience of the saints; here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth.” Rev. 14:12, 13. “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.” Rev. 22:14. Yours and Christ’s,

John O. Moore.

SCRIPTURE EXPLANATION.

_____

I am requested to ask you to explain Rom. 7:8-13. Your brother in Christ,

C. C. Knight.

There are two chief objects contemplated by the law. First, to hold sin and violence under restraint. “It was added because of transgressions.” Gal. 3:19. “On account of restraining transgressions.” — Jas. MacKnight.

Second, The law was designed to make manifest the malignity of sin, the depravity of the human heart. Hence we read, “The law entered that the offence might abound: but where sin abounded grace did much more abound.” Rom. 5:20. This explains the verses in question. “Sin taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin is dead.” Rom. 7:8. When no law is set over against evil dispositions, men are not conscious of being so evil. But when law interdicts, inward evil chafes under it, and sin seems to abound all the more in the consciousness.

“I was alive without the law once, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died.” Ver. 9. This must have been when he was a child. At the age of responsibility he became conscious of the moral law; and breaking the law through the conscious bent to sin, now revived through the knowledge of right and wrong, he died, and became a guilty sinner.

“And the commandment which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.” Ver. 10. The law, if obeyed, would retain life to the soul, but because of the inward bent to sin, it was violated, and death ensued. And in verses 12 and 13 the apostle informs us that sin was not made a necessity because of any extraneous or unjust demands of the law, but because of the carnal mind which is not subject to God neither indeed can be. Nay the law was holy and just, “but sin that it might appear sin” worked disobedience, and consequent death. In short the righteousness demanded by the law, and the unrighteousness of man, made the two incompatible. But he vindicates the law, notwithstanding it made sin show up the more.

QUESTIONS.

Zanesville, Ind.

A brother from this place who seems to have forgotten to sign his name, asks us:

  1. Was there any sin in Christ?
  2. What was his sanctification?
  3. In what order do you observe the washing of the saints’ feet and the Lord’s supper.

ANS. TO 1ST. No. Christ was absolutely pure and free from sin. Always was perfect in that respect.

ANS. TO 2D. His sanctification perfected him as a Savior. He was sanctified by his own blood. Heb. 10:29. “Made perfect through suffering.” Heb. 2:10. His suffering and death met the conditions of a perfect Savior; therefore he is able to perfectly save us. “Jesus Christ that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.” Heb. 13:12. Therefore he said. “For their sake I sanctify myself that they also might be sanctified through the truth.” He always was morally pure. But man is morally impure. He became a perfect Savior that we could be perfectly saved in him.

ANS. TO 3D. In John 13 it is clearly seen that Christ washed the disciples’ feet before he exposed Judas as traitor. In Matt. 26:20-30; Mark 14:17-26 it is equally clear that he exposed Judas before he instituted the Lord’s supper. So the order of that night is clearly recorded as follows: first, washed their feet; second, pointed out the traitor, who immediately went out; third, gave the bread and fruit of the vine. Right after which they sang a hymn and went out. So the feet washing was at the beginning of the Jewish passover meal. Jno. 13:1, and the Lord’s supper at the close of that meal. This brings the former first in observance, the latter second, and so we practice. “And supper being ended,” Jno. 13:2, does not refer at all to the Lord’s supper, but to the passover, as we see in verse 1. Nor does it mean that the meal was finished, which would conflict with the former verse, which says it was “before the feast of the passover.” But the words in verse 2 simply mean the preparation was ended. It is more correctly rendered by other versions, “Supper having come.”

MODERN SECT REVIVALS.

_____

Elk Dale, Mo.

Dear Saints of the Most High God: The word of God teaches us that we are to repent of our sins, so that we can exercise that living faith which comes from God. Matt. 21:32 — “For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not; but the publicans and harlots believed him, and ye when ye had seen it, REPENTED NOT AFTERWARD that ye MIGHT BELIEVE.” So we see that it takes repentance to bring us to that condition where we can exercise faith to the saving of the soul.

But we find the facts are not so, in modern sect revivals. They seldom, if ever, preach as Paul did, that “Godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of.” — 2 Cor. 7:10. But their great theme is, “believe, believe, believe.” “What shall we believe?” they say. “Why, believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God!” But we find that a great many people believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and yet they do not claim to be saved. Besides, James tells us that the devils also believe and tremble. Jas. 2:19. Oh, how many have this assenting, or brain faith! How sad to think of the awful deception that’s carried on in Babylon to day! Hundreds, nay thousands of precious souls are made to believe that all they have to do is “believe, believe,” and even some that are the loudest at this brain-faith preaching, are also the most radical in denying the “indwelling Spirit” of Christ, or the Holy Ghost; when the scripture plainly says, “that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.” 1 Cor 12:3. And yet these same blind guides, that deny the glorious presence of the Holy Ghost, in the true believer, will tell the people, “Oh just confess that Jesus is the Lord, and be baptized, and I have no doubt all will be well with your soul; God will eventually save you in heaven.” Yes and some that can not make “the confession” themselves, the preacher will do it for them. I saw this only a few weeks ago.

The St. Louis, Mo. “Globe Democrat,” speaks of a “great Religious Wave” that is passing over this state at the present time. In sixty-one counties it reports 20,216 conversions (?). Of this number the Methodists drew into their net 6,844, the Baptists 3,614, the Campbellites 3,183, the Presbyterians 1,107; and now the question arises in my mind, how many of this number are really saved of God? Surely not many, if the work has been the same elsewhere as at this place. Jo. J. Jones (brother to the world-famed Sam Jones), has been holding meetings in this and joining Co. His talk consisted of slang, comical expressions, death-bed scenes, and grave-yard stories. In the wind-up of his harangue, he would tell some great death-bed story, getting the people’s sympathies worked up so they would shed tears. This was what he was after, then he would call for joiners, or in his own words, “give me your hand and name, and you can join any church you want to.” The result of a twelve days meeting at Craig, Mo. was 125, Rock Port, 145 conversions (?), for which he received $675.00. I give this, not to advertise J. J. Jones, but to show the rottenness of sect machinery, the shallowness of their work. And then they report great numbers of their spurious conversions, and accessions to the church. Instead of thundering forth the word of God, “The soul that sinneth shall die,” letting real Holy Ghost conviction get hold of the people, whereby they would be enabled to lay hold on that living faith, that they can believe to the saving of the soul, they must resort to other methods. “The preaching of the cross is not popular enough for our advanced, enlightened age; it did well enough for Paul and our grandfathers’ day, but you see we have changed so much, progressed so far ahead of our fore-parents we must have a progressive way of getting saved; the old Bible way that Paul taught is altogether out of date with us;” — thus we seem to hear sectism say.

Oh! may the Lord have mercy on the poor deluded souls that are run through the sect mill. I saw one soul that I really believe was under Holy Ghost conviction; but they daubed her over with “untempered mortar.” The wound was “slightly healed,” and she too went with the multitude, conformed to the world, the flesh and the devil. O brethren in Christ, preach the whole Word; let the word of God thunder forth as it did from Mt. Sinai, that the people will quake and tremble, and say, “I greatly fear.” May the Lord bless you all. Your brother, saved, sanctified and happy in Jesus,

J. G. Neff.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I feel led of the Lord to tell what he has done for me. I am saved and sanctified by a second work of grace, and I give God the glory. I am healed of the catarrh, which I have had for many years; and I have used a great deal of earthly remedies but found no relief, until I gave myself to God to be used to his glory, then he did wonderfully heal me. Praise the Lord! I am enjoying good health to day, walking in the light with God. I do praise God for the cleansing of my soul and body. I have not tasted any medicine since I have been saved. I have given up all sects and worldly pleasure. I find all pleasure and comfort and joy and happiness in traveling the narrow way with Christ to glory. Praise God for a full and free salvation! Your saved sister in Christ,

Laura B. Meckley.

_____

Hadley, Ind.

Dear Children of the Living God: To day finds me completely saved in Jesus and trusting him for everything. Praise the Lord! He is my strength. How wonderful are his blessings! I love to serve God. I don’t find it a burden. It seems like I get my greatest blessing when I am with God in secret prayer; God blesses me so at these times that I just want to stay down on my knees and talk with him. Dear ones, go to God often in secret prayer. One dear brother has just “come out from among them.” Oh how Satan does howl when a soul sees the light and walks in it! They say we have a delusion of the devil in believing such a doctrine. Dear ones, we must look over such persecutions and not get discouraged. And we should live such pure lives that the world cannot find any thing within us contrary to the word of God. If we disobey the word of God in the least, God will know it and the world will see it, and then we will slip back and get in some one’s way and be a stumbling block. I can praise God to day that he saves me above all the trials and persecutions of this world. What are they compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us? Our little boy one year and a half old was taken very sick; had high fever and sore throat. We took it to the Lord and God healed him in his own good way. Praise the Lord! Your brother in Christ Jesus,

L. W. Stuart.

The last meeting we had was in the Court House in Bolivar, Mo., a place where truth had long been rejected. All former efforts to get the people out to listen to the teaching of holiness had failed, but this time the house was much crowded from night to night, and many acknowledged the truth. Quite a number were brought to God. Some were pardoned and several sanctified. Meeting closed the 7th. At the close of the meeting a few dear souls were buried with Christ in baptism, after which the little church obeyed the Lord in the glorious ordinance of washing the saints’ feet. The work was very much blessed of the Lord. A few afflicted people were healed. We do praise God for delivering souls in that town. Will begin meeting near here to night. Pray for us. Yours with victory in our souls,

G. E. Bolds, O. B. Wilson and Co.

Unto all the Elect of God: May grace and peace abound through Jesus Christ. Amen. I rejoice to report victory again on the side of our great Commander. Soon after we came here we begun meeting in Jesus’ name east of town; held some over a week and the Lord did reward us abundantly. There were six consecrations, some for pardon, some purity of heart. From there we went to Slate where we lifted up Jesus to the people, and the dear Lord did wonderfully reveal his almighty power. The little band there had been tried much in different ways; the devil had tried in divers manners to sow discord, but the dear ones were brought out brighter than before, and were settled down deeper in God’s love. During the meeting there were seventeen consecrations in all. Among those there were, a dear old father, mother, son, daughter and daughter-in-law that had been bound in the darkness of the Mother of Harlots, Roman Catholicism. Three of them were buried with Christ in baptism. May the blessed Lord keep their dear souls free, as they have confessed their sins to Jesus and he has made them free; may they stand aloof from the darkness and superstitions of those who are bound by Satan. The number that were baptized was six, and there are several more to follow. The devil tried to stop the work of salvation by afflicting the children so the parents could not go to meeting, but all that worked out a far m ore exceeding and eternal weight of glory. Bro. Gilliland’s little boy was healed of croup and fever. Bro. Drotts’ baby was healed of lung fever. He was instantly healed once, but afterwards the fever returned; but God did give such trust and faith that he was soon raised up again, and the dear parents have learned more of the sweetness of trusting in Jesus. Others were healed, for which we praise the living God. May God bless the little ones there and keep them true. Amen. Your brother saved to the uttermost,

W. A. Haynes.

To the Saints of God, Greeting: Our last report was from Cape Girardeau, Mo. From there we came to Ava, Ill., where the whole gospel had never been preached. We found a high wall of prejudice already built to keep the truth out. The sect preachers had publicly warned their flocks against us and said we were of the devil. They warned the people not to have anything to do with us. The Lord moved on an unsaved man to open a hall free of cost, and we held meeting for a week. Three souls claimed pardon and two others who belonged to the “holiness band” declared their freedom from sectism. An old lady eighty-four years of age was delivered from the tobacco habit by the power of God. She desires the saints to pray that her eyes may be healed. Please pray earnestly for her. She is saved and out of sectism. The Lord awakened quite an interest among the people in spite of the preachers, who would not come to hear the truth, and there are many friends to the truth there now, some of whom we believe will come into the light soon. We came on to this place where we found Brother Keeling already battling for the truth, with good interest among the people. We are making our way toward north-eastern Indiana as the Lord leads, and we want to hear from the saints who are on or near our line of travel. We want to stop and see them whether the way is open for meeting or not. We are now about the center of Illinois. Let all who live northeast of us in Illinois or Indiana write to us here, and tell us where you live. We travel with horse and spring wagon. Yours in the love and fellowship of the gospel,

R. M. and L. Haynes and R. B. Hicks.

Dear Saints of God: God bless you all. In the name of Jesus I can report again perfect victory over all the power of the enemy, with an abundance of grace and glory. Since last report the Lord has kept my tongue as the pen of a ready writer, and my heart also inditing a good matter. Praise God for his satiating power that satisfies to the uttermost. I went down to Malpas, Cheshire, a few weeks ago to see how the saints were getting on, and was joyful to find them not only standing firm, but making rapid advancement, in learning the songs of Zion and the language of Canaan, and ready to take hold in meeting. So we had a little meeting which resulted in quite a refreshing of Zion, and the Lord added such as met the conditions in the Word. God bless the dear saints there for their kind offerings. Many others were under conviction, some of whom I believe will yet get saved; others were so joined to their idols that the god of this world hath blinded their minds. There are those who lavish all their affections on the transitory things of this life, and therefore cannot experience the mighty love and power of God. Oh that the children of men would lavish all their love on the only worthy object, even the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world, and receive in return an abundance of grace to reign in this life and the life to come! Praise God! The work is moving on in England in spite of all the pernicious spirits the devil can rake up. For those that do know their God shall be strong and do exploits. Oh how weak some people are because they don’t know our God. I would just say to those, you had better quit your professing and go to confessing, and return and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon your heads, and your leanness shall flee away, and you can be fat and flourishing, to show that the Lord is upright. I expect to go to Scotland soon, the Lord willing. I don’t know why the Lord counted me worthy to be a messenger in this glorious eve of time, but I know he has, and I ask all the saints of God to join me in your prayers that God may get the best out of me he can at any cost for the salvation of souls. Your brother contending for the faith once delivered unto the saints,

J. W. Daugherty.

Dear Saints and Trumpet Reders: Bro. Swinburn and I held fifteen meetings in the name of Jesus, at and near Falcon, Colo., beginning Saturday, Feb. 17. This state is ripe for the harvest and harvest time is here. The waters of the great river Euphrates are dried up, and the way of the Kings of the east is prepared. See Rev. 16:12. Consequently, precious souls are fainting in Babylon for want of the water of life. I pray God to send more of the “kings of the east” to preach the gospel to them, ere they perish. The honest souls are finding out that “Truly in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains.” Jer. 3:23. Free Methodism has some disciples there, but when the two- edged sword was wielded by the Holy Spirit, at least one Free Methodist escaped and returned to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon his head. The F. M’s had quite a time during our stay there, crying with a loud voice, “O Baal, hear us.” Surely this is the denomination mentioned in Jer. 50:11, 12, for they certainly “bellow as bulls.” Having been organized in 1860, it is also one of the “hindermost of the nations and a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert.” One of their preachers testified to having seen a vision, and in it the letters “P. C.” were constantly before his eyes. So he concluded that he must go and “Preach Christ.” But a sinner who had heard the evening light preached, said that he had made a mistake, and that God was trying to prevail upon him to stay at home and “Plow Corn.” The Lord sent Bro. and Sister Shore to Falcon last summer, where they have a ranch, and they have scattered tracts and opened the way by teaching the one church and holiness, until many are enquiring the way to Zion. These meetings were one continuous victory for God. The devil was defeated at every turn. Three precious souls saved and the Word sown in many honest hearts, to be harvested in the near future. God bless dear Bro. and Sister Shore and family for their loving care for us while we remained there. Your brothers under the blood,

Jno. E. Rorerts and R. W. Swinburn.

the children of men. Jan. 28, we commenced meeting at this place. The attendance was rather small in the beginning but increased rapidly, the house being filled from time to time. Conviction rested upon the people and souls began to make their way to the altar and cry for mercy. Bro. Orr assisted a few days, whom God used in tearing down the strongholds of Satan and building up the kingdom of righteousness. We labored faithfully night and day, and the devil also labored seemingly just as faithful. But greater is he that is in us than he that is in the world. Some that had been making a loud profession for many years, we found to be in a deceived condition, whom we faithfully labored with, yet to little or no avail. The devil has tried every conceivable means to overthrow the church at this place, but in spite of all his cunning devices, God has a church still. Hard-hearted sinners were compelled to acknowledge of a truth that Christ was here, and many came humbly confessing their sins to God and received pardon. But the sectarians were farther alienated from God than the vilest sinners; at least they were more difficult to reach. Bro. E. E. Byrum, accompanied by Bro. Wm. Graves of Mason Co. were also with us a short time. Apparently the meeting came to a close after being held two weeks, but we continued almost four weeks longer, which resulted in about forty consecrations in all, of which number about twenty- eight obtained a real experience. Mar. 8, Bro. Warren baptized five of the saints in a beautiful lake, and the presence of God witnessed to those that obeyed the command. May God bless the church at Kendall, and build them up in the most holy faith. And we trust that they may keep a deaf ear to the whispering of Satan, but an open ear to the still small voice of Jesus. Wife and I are now holding meeting in the Bell school house, three and one-half miles southwest, from Gobles. Bro. Warren goes home to his family from here. Dear brethren, we need your prayers that we may be kept humble and obedient to His call. Yours, sanctified wholly,

A. M. Bixler and Wife, and W. E. Warren.

Dearly Beloved Saints: We are praising God for perfect salvation. Hallelujah! While holding a meeting at the Pendle school-house, we received an urgent call from the M. E. class leader and friends to come and labor among them, north of Colfax; but as we were earnestly engaged in the gospel, we encouraged Brother Bailey to go over there and begin the meeting in our stead. Accordingly he went and commenced the meeting about five miles north of Colfax, which lasted about two weeks. A few consecrations were made to the Lord and one was sanctified. The people were quite interested, but when the sin of secrecy was lightly touched, they were wonderfully stired and rather took a stand against this straight way. The meeting then closed for a week, when the Lord sent us to them to renew the battle. The Lord met with us in power, and the work of salvation and healing went forward in his name. Several obtained the experience of entire sanctification. A few were justified, who also went on unto perfection in holiness. The M. E. class leader and his wife, were among those who were sanctified wholly. There were eight or ten cases of healing; some of these were of long standing and grievous affliction, but they were gloriously healed by the power of God. They were saved out of the M. E., F. M., and U. P. sects, also a few backsliders were saved. Many were truly convicted but they would not yield because they would not give up all their idols. We hope some of them will yet be saved. Ten happy saints were immersed by dear Brother Tubbs. Dear Brother Martin of Colfax was also present in the meeting, and he was also used of the Lord. On Feb. 25, we met at the house of dear Bro. Cochran to observe the holy ordinances of God’s house. Seventeen saints participated in this glorious service. Meeting closed the 27th, with victory. Dear Brother Bailey went to Oaksdale. From there he will go to other points. May the dear Lord bless and reward all the dear ones for their kindness to us all. We are now holding a meeting in the Hickman school-house, about twenty miles southwest of Pullman. The Lord is settling conviction on the people and good is being done. About the 16th, I go to Pullman to rest up, perhaps, a short time, then we may go to Idaho. The Lord is prospering his work gloriously in Washington. To him be all the glory forever. Pray on beloved, for us and our constant success in the gospel of Christ. Yours in perfect love and humility of Jesus,

Dear Ones of the Household of Faith: We gave our last report as we were beginning a series of meetings at Benton Harbor, Mich. The meeting continued for eleven nights, and resulted in the salvation of several precious souls, which was very encouraging to us. One man yielded his heart to God and was saved and filled with praises, as the first song was being sung at the beginning of an afternoon meeting. A sister near eighty years of age, and who had been using tobacco and morphine for thirty years, was saved in a former meeting we held at that place, and still reports a glorious deliverance. She can neither write nor read, and her language is a far departure from the correct usage, yet her testimony given from heaven is edifying and convincing. The Lord has a glorious church there which we were loth to leave. May the Lord ever keep them pure. The Holy Ghost has chosen Bro. Wm. Koch as overseer of the flock.

We came to Chicago Mar. 5, expecting to remain in the city only over night, but the Lord held us here in a meeting for one week. There were five consecrations, which seemed to get clear experiences, and others were advanced in the true light that now shineth. The Lord has gathered together from the different parts of the city, the African, the Dane, the Swede, the German, the English, and made them all one in Jesus which meet together once a week in the one Spirit, glorifying God. On Sunday afternoon the church met on the lake beach on the World’s Fair ground for baptismal purpose. A throng of pleasure-seekers were strolling through the grounds, and while a song was being sung, quite a large crowd had gathered to witness the scene. One brother was buried with Jesus and arose praising God. As we went down into the water with a sister, a policeman appeared upon the scene and called unto us to return, but we knowing we were where the police did not care to follow, baptized her in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. He forbade further baptism, whereupon we began to preach Jesus unto the people, but of this too we were stopped. We then proceeded to distribute tracts, which were received with eagerness by the people. We moved farther down the beach, some of the crowd following, and baptized the other remaining applicant. Amid all of this a halo of glory was round about us all. We then went to the home of dear Bro. Simons, where we washed the saints’ feet, partook of the bread and drank of the cup in the remembrance of Jesus. Here there was some interruption, but the Lord gave victory and all rejoiced in his glory. Near eleven o’clock we took leave of the dear little band and came to this place, where we are in Jesus’ name, expecting by his grace to lift him up to the people here. Assist us by your prayers. We expect to remain in Iowa or Missouri for a few months. Any one desiring meeting, address us at Allerton, Wayne Co., Iowa. Your brother and sister, fully saved,

Chas. and Minnie Orr.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I believe it would be to the glory of God to write my testimony to night as I never have written one for the TRUMPET yet, and it has been nearly a year since the Lord gave me the evening light. I first became interested in the saints by reading a book on Divine Healing which a dear sister lent my mother, and last June the Lord led me to go to Grand Junction to the camp meeting, where I felt that I had met with God’s true people. I was sanctified and made to know the love of God towards me. He has healed me many times of late, and it is just wonderful how he keeps me trusting in his Word. He is my physician: I take no other medicine. He has also taken away the appetite for tea and coffee, and I feel that he is sinking me down deeper in his love every day. And I ask you, dear ones, to pray for me that I may be fully prepared for whatever work he may call me to do. Your sister, saved and kept by power divine,

Dear Trumpet Readers: I feel it my duty and a great privilege to add my testimony to the goodness and power of God to save and keep. I have been a class leader in the Methodist sect for over twenty years, and often during that time I have been disgusted with the formality and worldliness among the professed people of God. Often when honest souls were converted I was ashamed to have their names written on a book with so many ungodly professors; but I could see no way to avoid it. But praise the dear name of Jesus, he has led me in a way I knew not. About three months ago when Bro. Jacobson and Co. came here I had very much prejudice against them, thinking it was another sect, but after I had heard them a few times I began to see the light, and partly accepted it, but I listened to the tempter and turned against it, and I had about made up my mind to go out and lecture against it. But the dear Lord used his own means in turning my my case, and opened my eyes to the true light; and then I opened my heart to the truth. I came to God as a sinner, and then for cleansing. Praise the name of Jesus! He saved me and then cleansed me through and through, and oh he keeps me so sweetly saved. Jesus is my all in all; he has healed me and I feel it safe to trust him for all things. Yours, sweetly saved and kept,

She urged a mother’s prayer, and with her, the saints of God sent their petitions to the throne. There was a change in her life. At times she seemed almost to claim her Savior’s promises, but did not become entirely satisfied until a short time before her death. Then peace entered her soul and she was enabled to meet death without a fear. One by one she took the grown members of the family by the hand and requested them to meet her in heaven. BOW LOW.

_____

FOR some time past we have felt moved to write upon a subject that has weighed heavily upon our mind. Eze. 2:3-6. We have seen a tendency upon the part of some professing entire consecration, and sanctification, to have a preference of some things, rather than to be subject to the will of God in all things. Only such can the Master use; only such will be blessed in their deeds, utterly without preference as to his leading. Thus the mind of Christ, “Father, thy will be done, not mine.” God chooses those whom he will send. We are to try the spirits, but always remember that probably the very one God desires to send among us to declare his truth, may be just the person we do not care to hear. But if such a one has truly been born of God, and the fruit of the Spirit has been, and is being made manifest through him or her unto the edifying of the saints, we must be careful lest we offend. Matt. 18:6. We are aware that there are a great many false teachers, who do not the truth; these we can easily detect. But there are many whom God has separated unto the work, who BOW LOW, as Gideon’s band at the well of Harod. So he brought down the people unto the water: and Lord said unto Gideon. Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue as a dog lappeth, him shall thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth upon his knees to drink. Judges 7:5. These we must not reject simply because we have become carnal, 1 Cor. 3:4, 5, but rather be willing to be subject to all things.

Again, how often does it happen, yea, even those who are called of God, that a stranger in the flesh comes among us, and because we have our preference we give him no encouragement, but are ready to discountenance him or her! How often because they do not just talk or act just as some one else whom we prefer, down goes our heads into our hands instead of holding up their hands by lifting our hearts to God in prayer, that he might speak through them to the edifying of the saints, and the conversion of sinners! More than this, the harm does not stop there. Those whom we thus exalt are apt to become puffed up, through much flattery, and God in due time moves them out of the way. We might cite several cases, one in particular, but we forbear. Now little ones, do you think this is right when sinners in your community, yea, even your own children, and those of your neighbors are sinking down and becoming serious in their souls, and you, even you, a professed saint of God, are saying, “Well if we cannot have Bro. so and so we don’t want anybody.” May God show his people their error. Look about you, for there is much to be done; and remember God’s ways are not our ways; his thoughts are not our thoughts. — Isa. 55:8, 9.

Again, we find in our travels, by our experience and by actual observation, that in general, those that are foremost in desiring certain ones, have gone astray after the gods of this world; are the farthest from God. Now dear ones, I sincerely hope, and my prayer to God my Master is that this may be received in the same spirit in which we give it, that of love, and a desire of doing good, that we may remain in line, just a meek and empty vessel at his feet, ready to be filled for his use at any time. We will be tried as by fire. The refiner of gold places the crucible upon the fire, puts in the metal in the lump; makes the fire hotter and hotter until the dross begins to rise to the top. This he skims off and throws away; and as the fire becomes hotter and hotter, the dross continues to rise; finally it ceases to come up, and the refiner looks down into that metal and sees his own image there, and he knows it is pure. So God must see his own image in our hearts, before he can use us. Now dear saints of God, let none hinder the work of the Master any longer, but let God’s servants everywhere feel free to work for God. If you have calls that you cannot, fill, remember that there are laborers that God would use among the people to his glory, and it is our bounden duty to see that they are notified of these things. As for us, ever since we were saved, we have always had enough to do for God, plenty of work in the vineyard of the Lord. I would not give much for one who had to go a hundred miles from home to begin work. God has a work for us right where we are. Let us take it up at once. If we cannot preach or exhort, we can do our part by supplying the needs of those who can, and have forsaken home and a great many, even their children, that they might go.

Now may the saving grace of our great Redeemer, the High Priest and Bishop of our souls, protect and keep all the true saints of God, wherever you may be scattered throughout the land. Your saved brother,

G. B. Collins.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I take this opportunity to tell you how Jesus has blessed and saved me from sin. I gave myself to the Lord about three years ago, and by his help, lived a faithful Christian for about one year. I was then called off in company with wild associates, and soon became cold spiritually, and fell back to the world. But as I could not find peace nor pleasure in the world and sin, I came back to God, and consecrated to his service for lifetime, whether long or short. Oh, I do ever praise God for salvation full and free! Brethren and sisters, let us press onward and upward, and not backward, for the prize that is for the faithful. God forbid that any of us should be stumbling blocks in the way that would cause some poor soul to stumble over us into torment. I desire an earnest interest in the prayers of God’s people. Your saved brother in Christ,

A. J. Watkins.

I live on the beautiful mountains, banished by those who ought to love me. I feel truly thankful for the interest some kind Christian friends are taking in sending me some religious reading. Pray for me that I may be more humble, more meek and mild, more like Christ who is our example. I never did feel that I wished to retaliate evil for evil; no, but contrariwise give a blessing. This spirit I owe to Jesus, for I was converted at nine, having truly religious parents, and I never got into the way of grievous sins. Let us keep our lamps trimmed and burning. Pray for me that I may be one of those happy ones when the king shall say unto them on his right hand, Come ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. I am a Jewess, a Hebrew.

Dear Saints: I rejoice in a present salvation. I do praise God so much for his loving care and protection over me, and the way he is hearing and answering my prayers. Glory and praise to his dear name! I love God with all my heart. He is my staff and shield, and all in all. I am sinking deeper and deeper in his holy will. I do feel so grateful to God that he has been so merciful as to spare my life, and had so much patience with me when I was sinning against him. He has saved my soul and sanctified my nature. Where once was envy and strife, all is peace in my soul. I thank God he has given me that love in my heart that I can pity those that are overcome by the enemy of their souls, and pray that they may get right in the sight of God. I realize it means something to live salvation. I started to serve God aright, and by the grace of God I am determined to do it. My constant prayer to God is, oh God help me to bear all things, suffer all things, for thy dear name’s sake. Dear ones, pray for me. Your sister in Christ,

Amy S. Foote.

Dear Ones in Christ: I have a desire to testify through the GOSPEL TRUMPET to the glorious salvation of Jesus Christ, I possess in my soul. Praise the Lord forever! How glad I am that I have learned to live for Jesus while young! My heart melts down in humble praise to God for saving me from all the foolishness of this world. Christ has broken the power of sin, and set my captive soul at liberty. He first pardoned all my sins, then sanctified my nature by a second, definite work of grace. I indeed realize that it wasn’t by works of righteousness which I have done, but all through the precious blood of Christ. The sweet nature of Jesus fills my soul. God is giving me grace to live a holy life before this world every day. Oh praise the Lord for Bible salvation! He keeps me continually by his mighty power. I am dead to the world and all of its pleasures, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. He is dearer to my heart than all else. I am living on the “mountains of God’s holiness,” redeemed and brought up out of all the slums of sin, with my feet on the solid rock, Christ Jesus. Jesus is teaching me many precious lessons, for which I give him all the glory. I desire all of God’s little ones to pray for me.

Dearly Beloved Saints: I feel that the dear Lord would be pleased for me to write a few lines in the name of Jesus. I do know that I am dead to all sin and self, and hid in Christ alone with all the redeemed; first justified, then went on unto perfection which is sanctification or cleansing out of all bitterness, malice and hatred. I love all good and hate all evil. I praise God I am sunk down deeper in the heart of my God. I was at Red Lion last Sabbath and they had a sect meeting, and sinners to do their singing, and I learned that one of the men that professed holiness was the means of getting it started; and this man told me that the preacher preached holiness as plain as any saint he had ever heard. I went to hear him and I found he preached only one side of the picture, and that pleased the people. He left all sects alone, all pride and fashion and tobacco; those things were left out, also I saw the people get up and testify, and had on all the pride they could afford. God pity the poor blind souls, to be led away to serve that hard old master, the devil. But I do praise God that he has a few saints over at Red Lion yet. Your brother, saved to the utmost,

Henry Latshaw.

Dear Ones in Christ Jesus: I am so glad I can testify to the wonderful saving and keeping and also healing power of God. I am saved and sanctified, and walking the light of heaven. Oh how sweet! all is peace and calm within. Although the storm beats without, all is sunshine within. What a grand thought to know our house is built upon the rock Christ Jesus! Jesus has been my physician ever since he saved my soul, and also for my family. I want to tell what a wonderful physician we have found in him, so that all the world can hear and especially those who are suffering in like manner as I was.

When my second child was born it was found that laceration had occurred in first confinement and my blood had become poisoned and my nerves all gone; and I found myself a perfect wreck in both body and mind, and the worst of all, no hope in Christ. Dear ones, my heart stood still and I became cold when the Lord shewed me my condition, death staring me in the face. It was a terrible moment.

I shudder to think of how near I was on the brink of eternity, and would have been lost forever if God in his great love and mercy had not spared.

I had never been taught to pray and had never read the Bible scarcely any, and did not even understand justification, and all I could say was, “O Lord if thou wilt just spare my life I will serve thee all my days.” It was only a few words, but my whole heart went out to God, and just at that instant I was assured that I should not die then, for God truly had heard and answered. After I got able to get up and around I remembered ray promise and began to search for God in earnest. Not knowing just how to find him, I was in such darkness, but when I found him he wonderfully blest my soul, and forgave all my sins. I did not know anything about standing by faith, but thought I had to stand by feeling, and not knowing about the tricks of the enemy, he came at me full force, and my body being weak, I got into terrible trouble and darkness. The enemy had me bound so I was afraid to say anything or speak to any one about my soul, not even to my companion. I suffered it seemed a thousand deaths with doubts and fears. Although he had me bound, I never gave up my confidence in God. I wasn’t able to do scarcely anything for years, doctoring all the time. I doctored with six different doctors besides patent medicines. I feel like the woman in Mark 5:26, that suffered many things of many physicians. I suffered six years in both soul and body, and a year ago last spring when I again came to God and he saved and sanctified me wholly, and when he saved me he partly healed me. So when I was at Grand Junction camp meeting last June he made a complete healing, and now to day I can say that I am healed and have a strong mind in Christ Jesus. I can safely recommend my Physician to any one who is willing to obey his direction. I write this to glorify my Master. The Lord has also healed my bady boy nineteen months old. He had an abcess on his back three months. I took him to God in faith and we anointed him and layed on hands and also had the Trumpet family to pray for him, and we believed Father did hear and we claimed his promise by faith. But it grew worse all the time; but as it grew worse my faith increased more and more, and God gave me grace to bear and even rejoice through all the persecutions (which were not a few) and trials, and when my faith had been tested long enough the work was quickly done. He was healed instantly and my faith wonderfully increased, and God shall have all the honor and praise, for he is worthy. I ask all the saints to remember me in your prayer. Yours in Christ,

Nellie Tatman.

Dear Brethren and Sisters in Christ: It is now about three months since I read for the first time, a copy of the TRUMPET, which was handed to me. Since that time I have had the privilege of reading a copy almost every week, which has been a great blessing to me. As I read the testimonies of my brethren, indicating the power of God to save from all sin, I am made to exclaim with all my heart, Amen and amen.

I was converted to the Christian religion a long time ago. It was a good time; I will never forget it, nor will I ever forget the place and the circumstances. It occurred to me I should never have any more trouble, I would always be happy. Finally I was made to believe all was not right within my heart. Anger would originate, impatience would manifest itself, a love for the things of this world was a natural characteristic, a conforming to the world was a natural consequence. I was taught that I must grow in grace, that I must become strong through service to God. Up to this time I had not heard a sermon on the doctrine of sanctification from a Bible standpoint. Subsequently, however it was my pleasure to listen to the preaching of the whole gospel. This set me to reading my Bible and searching for truth. I was not slow to find that sanctification was a Bible doctrine and distinct from justification and might be obtained and enjoyed in this life. But I found it was not popular; that those who professed it (they told me) were fanatics, and a great many hypocrites. These and similar statements confronted me upon the right and upon the left. I seemed to comprehend the fact that I had not attained to that experience spoken of by the prophet Isaiah. I knew I was not in the highway, the way of holiness, for there were lions and ravenous beasts which seemed to confront me also. But I tried to grow into this grace, and preached it to my congregations as being attained through this medium. This growth was impeded by thorns and thistles. Having had some experience in my early life in growing corn and potatoes, etc., I learned that these must be taken up by the roots in order that the corn might grow, after which, by aid of the rain and sunshine a wonderful growth was manifested. I reasoned upon this line. In the meantime I looked for those who had attained this grace by growth and I could not find them. Then I sought it, during which the enemy of my soul seemed to suggest, “Horn, the course you are taking will ruin you, it will destroy your influence in the church and you will be regarded as a fanatic; your friends will disown you; your wife will be ashamed of you.” These and kindred suggestions were brought to bear. Oh my brethren, I cannot begin to picture the fight. It was a long one, and hard. I had fought for three years for my country, and in this I don’t remember to have displayed any cowardice. In my heart I said, I will never give it up, I read, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” The cleansing seemed to impress me. This was what I needed, yes it was just what I wanted and what I must have. I read again, “The Son of God was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil.” The effects of sin appeared to impede any progress to a higher life. There was too much conforming to the world. Carnal desires and carnal appetites wanted to predominate.

I now had the consent of my own mind that I should present my body a living sacrifice (yea, living), holy, acceptable unto God, I took with me burdens, cares, anxieties, friends, family, and blessed be God, got on the altar, and the conditions were met and the work was done. The consequence, dear reader, is that I have been free since that time. Peace reigns within. I sing, “Yes, bless the Lord, I’m happy on the way.” While I write these words at this late hour at night, alone in my room, fifty miles from home, the blessed Lord is with me to cheer me. If I would reach forth my hand I might even touch the hem of his garment. Glory be to God for such a blessed experience! The apostle prayed that we might be able to comprehend with all saints, what is the breadth and length and depth and height; and know the love of Christ which passeth knowledge, that we might be filled with all the fulness of God. Eph. 3:18, 19. Dear reader, this is not all. The apostle says further, It is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 1 Cor. 2:9.

Now dear reader, I am happy to testify that I am growing in grace. Yes, the very dews of heaven seem to be falling upon my soul, and the Son of righteousness is wonderfully lighting up my pathway, so that I appear to see the road widening and plainer and plainer until heaven is very near.

God bless the GOSPEL TRUMPET, and may it live to accomplish much in saving souls and sanctifying believers. Pray for the writer, that God will bless his efforts in advocating a full and free salvation, a salvation from all sin.

T. B. Horn.
