We Know.

_____

John 3:11.

_____

Thank God, there are some things we know,
In heaven’s gracious plan,
By Holy Spirit and the word
Revealed to mortal man.

We know in whom we have believed;
He’s faithful, true and just;
He’ll keep forever that which we’ve
Committed to his trust.

We know we’ve passed from death to life,
The Spirit witness gives;
And now by feasting on His word,
Our soul forever lives.

We know that carnal inbred sin,
Within is crucified,
And by the blood and Holy Ghost
We now are sanctified.

We know that those when born of God,
By grace are kept from sin;
And while in Jesus they abide,
There’s joy and peace within.

We know that by their daily fruit,
To all the world each proves
Which is the way they’re traveling in,
Which future home they choose.

We know God’s awful word is fixed
Eternally above;
And from it He will never swerve,
Tho’ heaven and earth remove.

Interpretation privily
To none is ever lent,
So ye who prophecy expound,
Be sure of God you’re sent.

Enough to teach the things we know,
Diverge not from this rule,
Or schisms you will generate,
Give heresy her fuel.

For of the doctrine ye shall know;
Teach it where’er you go,
And then as other things revealed,
In love your brother show.

We know that trying times will come
To all who godly live,
But He who is our constant friend
Sufficient grace will give.

We know all things shall work for good
To us while we love God;
Then we’ll be loyal to his name,
Obey his holy word.

We know whate’er we ask of him
In Jesus’ worthy name,
He’ll not refuse, but freely grant,
If we believe the same.

We know our labor’s not in vain
While we’re in his employ;
And winning precious souls for him
Becomes extatic joy.

We know that when this earthly house
Shall fall and pass away,
We have a house prepared for us
In everlasting day.

We know the time is drawing near,
Yea, even at the door,
When Christ shall come his bride to take
With him forever more.

We know we’ll see Him as He is,
For we like Him shall be;
And then through endless ages more
His wondrous beauty see.

Thank God for vict’ry o’er each foe,
As on through life we go.
By this we’ll triumph to the end —
“We speak the things we know.”

W. J. Henry.

OUR BODY THE TEMPLE.

_____

BEING led by the blessed Spirit of God, I will write a few texts showing by the word of God that the body is the temple of the holy Spirit, and that it must not be defiled. We read in i Cor. 3:16, 17. “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” I recently heard one poor soul say that people could not get perfect in this body, that this body is full of sin. Well we will read the next verse and see how be and the holy apostle differs on the subject. The word says, “If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy. “For the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.” Now dear readers, if you have not given your body unto God as a living sacrifice, holy, and acceptable unto the Lord, it is time you should be thinking of your own soul; for what will it profit you though you should gain the whole world and lose your own soul? What will keep you from losing your soul? Why, letting the Lord sanctify you both soul and body.

In Jno. 17:15, Jesus says, “I pray not that thou shouldst take them out of the world. But that thou shouldst keep them from the evil.” How were they to be kept from evil? By being sanctified. For he says, “Sanctify them through thy truth.” He also tells his disciples in 15:3, “Ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.” Then says for them to abide in him, in Christ the vine. And he says, “Every branch that beareth fruit he purgeth it that it may bring forth more fruit.” Now we find that there is difference between justification, and the purifying. For a soul must be clean, have forgiveness of sins, bear fruit, before he can receive the purging.

Now dear brother and sister in Christ, can we wonder why so many poor souls claim to be living in sin? They have followed their teachers who have gone astray and say they cannot be pure. They have not received this purging, and the old Adam nature is not purged out and they won’t come to the light. Why? Because their deeds are evil, and they love darkness rather than light. Glory to Jesus, this is what his word says. Now we are not our own; our body is Christ’s. For he says we are bought with a price, his blood. “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. Acts 20 28. We have crucified the flesh, and now let us glorify God in our bodies which are his. He gave his body to be crucified for us, and now dear souls we must not defile our bodies which are Christ’s, for they are bought with Jesus’ blood.

Oh beloved, how my soul does rest so sweetly in Jesus, to know that I am completely on the altar, which is Christ, and that his blood does cleanse me from all sin. Oh dear souls, we must let loose of our sect teachers, and look to Christ. For listen at the holy apostle in Acts 20. he says that grievous wolves shall enter in among you, and that men shall arise to draw away disciples after them. And he commends you to God and the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among the sanctified. Now dear souls, you who are committing sin, you must get forgivness before you can receive the inheritance, and to receive an inheritance you must get sanctified. Acts 26:18. For when you receive an inheritance you get possession of it, and as long as an individual lets sin reign in his mortal body, he cannot possess this inheritance. For Paul says, “Let not sin reign in your mortal body.” Now you that claim that sin is reigning in your body, let it not reign any longer, that you should obey it in the lusts thereof. But yield yourselves unto God, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. Then sin shall not have dominion over you. Rom. 6:12-16. If every soul that is burdened with sin and distress will meet the requirements of God, then they can glorify God in their bodies which will be the temples of the Holy Spirit. Now beloved, let us be up and working for the salvation of souls. For the harvest is ripe, ready to reap. Your brother,

Geo. W. Godbey.

TRUTH.

_____

“OF his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be kind of first fruit of his creatures. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.” James 1:18, 19. I wish to mention a few things here in connection with the above text, and especially in regard to this word of truth, by which we were begotten. In the first place I notice some are too hasty in making assertions, even in their testimonies, and do not stop to fully consider the real meaning of what they say. I believe we should fully understand the absolute meaning of every assertion we make. Now it is a very common thing to hear a brother or sister say: I am doing all I can for the cause of Christ, or I am doing or intend to do all in my power for the salvation of souls. Now dear ones, what a blessed thing it would be if we would all do this, and it is wonderful how the word of God would increase and how speedily the everlasting gospel would be carried to the uttermost parts of the earth. While it is right for every child of God to have an earnest and zealous desire to do all he can for the cause of Christ. I say we ought to do all we can. We should be very careful that we comprehend the full meaning of the term before making the statement.

Remember to do all we can or all in our power, means a great deal. Better not make the assertion than to make it and not live to it. How many who make this assertion are fulfilling it to the letter? Let me say to some of you who have made this statement, are you quite certain you are doing all you can, or all in your power? Carefully examine your past life, back for even one month, and ask yourself the question, Could I not have visited a few more sick, or a few more who are in need, or in distress? Could I not have spoken a few more words of consolation to those who are burdened, or downcast? could I not have done a little more in helping to feed the hungry, or cloth the poor? Could I not have spoken to a few more sinners about their souls? If you have faithfully done your duty in these and all other things the word requires of you, so that you could not possibly have done any more, you have testified correct. If not, you have proved false and have not lived up to what you profess, and thereby bring reproach upon the cause.

Now dear ones I do not speak against any body doing all they can; by no means. We should work while is it day, for the night cometh when no man can work. We should strive mightily to press the battle to the gates. But my object in writing this is to get you to act as you say you will, or else think before you speak. Consider well the real meaning of the words; live up to what you profess, and not dishonor the cause, and lose the confidence of the people, also lose confidence in yourself, and the grace of God out of your soul by not living up to what you profess.

Again, before we testify that we. are holy, sanctified, perfect in love, and free from all sin, let us be sure that we understand the full meaning of the words, and closely examine ourselves, and know of a truth that we have the experience. If we claim we are measuring up to the word, remember that means a great deal. It means a complete giving up, a complete obedience in all things, to be completely reconciled and satisfied with God’s dealings with us at all times. You should be quite certain you are filling the complete measure, and not violating one of the least of God’s commands! Yours in much love, and in defence of the truth,

D. C. Engle.

__________

WALKING IN THE LIGHT.

_____

“If we walk in the light as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ, his Son, cleanseth us from all sin”. 1 Jno. 1:7. “If” implies a condition, or, that the cleansing is promised on conditions that we walk in the light. What is meant by walking in the light, is briefly shown in the language of Jesus: “I am come, not to do mine own will, but to to do the will of him that sent me;” or in this: “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” “Thy word is truth.” And if the word conflicts with that we have been taught, the teaching must give place to the word, or unbelief takes the place of faith. The entrance of the word giveth light. It enters by believing it (For we understand it by believing it), then we have fellowship with all who are born of him. There is no getting away from this without getting into Babylon. This is the hedge which God has around his people; they are all inside, and the people of this world are on the outside. Now every error of judgement, every failure of understanding, every infirmity of the flesh or spirit, is under the blood. Glory to God!

THE NARROW WAY.

_____

Dear Saints of God: I feel led to write my testimony again. God saved my soul seven years ago and still keeps me by his mighty power. I praise God for an entire separation from the pleasures of this world. My heart was once filled with the pleasures of this world, such as picnics, fourth of July gatherings, balls, theaters, and all worldly revellings of different kinds. But I have obeyed the gospel and these things have all left me, by the washing of regeneration and the renewing of the Holy Ghost. Praise God forever! “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eye, and the pride of life, is not of the Father but is of the world.”

[1] Jno. 2:15, 16. “Be not conformed to this world but be ye transformed, by the renewing of your minds, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Rom. 12:2. “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affections on things above, not on the things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.” Col. 3:1-3. Praise God! that cuts off all these worldly pleasures that are to day, and to morrow fade away. But I have taken Jesus for my satisfying portion. When we get Jesus in us he soothes the aching void, and gives the peace and joy that the world cannot give, nor take away. Jesus says in Matt. 28:20, “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” Can you my dear readers, find where Jesus said to engage in any worldly amusements? But there is a class of people spoken of in 2 Tim. 3:1-4. “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come, for men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God.” I find these words are true to day. Some who make a profession of sanctification will go to picnics and be on the committee, will mix in with all manner of wicked and sinful people, and walk arm in arm with an infidel, and then lean on the Lord and say, The Lord is with us. Shame! such a man’s religion is vain. “If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, meet for the Master’s use, and prepared unto every good Work.” 2 Tim. 2:21. “But evil men shall wax worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.”

A short time ago I went to see a brother who claims to be out in the evening light. While talking to him on revelling, he said, “You are too narrow in your views of what constitutes a Christian.” He believes in being broad in his Christian view. He thinks that if a man is a good neighbor and a good moral man, he is all right. We must take him along with us. But Jesus says, Except ye repent ye shall all likewise perish. And Jesus teaches that strait is the gate and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. So we must be careful and not get ahead of Christ, who is our example. Christ says, For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat. I ampraising God that he has shown me the narrow way and gives me grace to walk in it. Praise his dear name that the way is so narrow that no sin or sins, or the very appearance of evil can get in. And the way is broad enough for all who will live godly in Christ Jesus. For the grace of God that brings salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously and godly in this present world, looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ; who gave himself for us, that he might redeem from all iniquity and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. Oh praise God for this beautiful narrow way that he has prepared! I thank his dear name I am one of his chosen ones. He says, But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people, that ye should shew forth the praise of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light; and hast made us unto God kings and priests, and we shall reign on the earth. Your brother saved and kept by the power of God unto salvation. Amen. All the saints pray for me and my family.

Shermansdale, Pa., Aug. 13, 1894.

I Dear Friends of God: Please pray for me Aug. 26th at 10 o’clock. I am a poor helpless cripple, afflicted with curvature of the spine, body paralyzed all below my arms, bones and joints drawn crooked and out of shape, my knees are drawn up against my abdomen, my knees and hip joints have grown stiff, and I cannot straighten them out. I have been a poor wicked sinner and desire to be saved and wholly sanctified, and raised up for the glory of God.

Two years ago the dear Lord put it into a sister’s heart to take me to the Berachah home at New York City tor three weeks. I thought it a great undertaking, but she and the Lord got me there without any trouble. While there the Lord put in my lower limbs his divine healing power, a strange feeling which is still working in them. He promised to restore me to health Jer. 30:17, and again when discouraged, in Hab. 2:3, “Though it tarry, wait for it, because it will surely come, it will not tarry:” then in Heb. 10:36, 37. Jas. 1:4. Psa. 37:7.

When I was anointed according to Jas. 5:14 these words came to me, “Thou art made every whit whole.” I said then I was healed When asked why I didn’t get up, I said, “I can’t,” even before trying; when I did try I could not, but still expected the Lord to raise me up soon. I am disappointed and am afraid I am doubting. I have given myself all to him to do what he will with me. I am afraid I have not yielded the property, but only signed it to him. Oh pray specially that I be made right, wholly in all things like Jesus.

Yours,

Alex. W. Smiley.

AN EVIL WORKER.

_____

Bro. and Sister R. M. Haynes write us from Cape Girardeau, Mo. warning the saints against one John D. Ashbaugh, “who is passing from one community of saints to another: he begins by preaching a good deal of good doctrine, and thereby gets the confidence of some who are weak, after which he shows the spirit of the devil in speaking against the saints of God and the Gospel Trumpet. Says you can be fully in God’s order and belong to Masonry. He is a member of the G. A. R. and is reported an Odd Fellow by some who are in the lodge. He also carries recommendations from sectarian preachers. He caused division among the weak ones of this place. We warn all not to receive him as a man of God until he shows fruits of repentance.”

About the same fruits were reported to us of this man at another place, and to do our whole duty we wrote him stating the charges against him, one of which, if we remember correctly was delivering a speech for the G. A. R’s. The man, to our knowledge, made no reply, and we have all reasons to accept Bro. Haynes’ statement, and say to all, do not receive him, nor go to hear him.

GOOD NEWS FROM GERMANY.

_____

We have just received a letter from dear Bro and Sister Rupert, who are still in Hamburg, Germany, and we join them in thanks to God for his blessings upon their labors. Because of a debt that was left behind in Pa., they thought it necessary to borrow money to return on and then go to work with their hands to get means to pay the debt. Our soul was much burdened for the cause of Christ in the foreign field. We saw that their return would largely increase their debt, and it might take two or three years out of the vineyard of the Lord before they could accumulate the money. And such a course would also leave their work to perish in Germany, and discourage the appropriation of means for the foreign field in the future. So we wrote to them in the love of Jesus to stay by their post of duty, and we would endeavor to raise the money and pay the debt. We have now received answer, from which we make these extracts;

“Wife and I have been contemplating going home for some time, but never could get a clear answer from God to go. We had two matters before us. One the duty of straightening up our matters with the world, which have been a great burden for a long time. The other, the great cause of God. When we thought of leaving there would a sad feeling come to us. Seeing how God has raised up a church here, and they being so young, to leave them now would give the enemy a sure chance to destroy the work, and to bring reproach upon the cause in the future. But since receiving your letter, dear wife and I have concluded to stay ip the name of the Lord, and trust him to fix up matters as per your suggestion. Praise our God for his goodness to us! God only knows what we have come through since coming to this dark land. But praise God, it has been worth more to us than gold. And now he is rewarding us with dear souls. I can now see why Satan tried so hard to hinder the cause here; he knew very well the truth would be a thunderbolt against his kingdom. For it seems that the German people are waiting for something better than sectism; and when they get the light, they are as firm as a rock. One sister had been saved only one week when she took very ill with a dangerous sickness. All wanted her to have a doctor brought, but she refused, and wished us sent for. We went in the name of our Lord, and he did heal her, and the heart of her husband was much touched.

The Lord has raised up a couple companies of workers. A Salvation Army Captain, his wife and Lieutenant have received the truth, and the Lord has shown them to work with us. I am praying God to send laborers into the harvest, and those who have means, to give of the same, for it takes means as well as faith, to carry on the mission work. We need the TRUMPET in German so much, and German tracts. We are thinking of going to Berlin. That is the capital of Germany, also headquarters of the S. Army. One of the brethren is anxious we should go there because he says there are sincere souls there who will doubtless receive the word. If the Lord opens the way we will go.

To day my soul doth magnify the Lord for the way the work is prospering, and for the outlook of a mighty work being done in Germany. God has most wonderfully helped us in singing and preaching the word in German. We are not in the least discouraged. The hardest of the fight is over here in Hamburg. Pray much for the work in Germany and in England, and for the workers. Truly we would love very much to see you all, and I hope it may be so we can in Father’s good time. Our address will be Gruenerdeich 25, part L. until further notice. We close with much holy love to all. Your brother and sister,

J. H. Rupert.”

Now dearly beloved saints, we have written and sent word to some of the camp meetings for the dear saints to give as freely as God has prospered you to lift this burden from the hearts of these dear ones. Oh beloved saints, is it not enough that they have denied themselves of the comforts of home, and have subjected themselves to all the privations of a foreign land, to trust God alone for their living, and a place to lie down at night? Shall we be so neglectful of the fruits of love and fellowship, as to allow them yet to bear this burden of a debt here at home, where there are thousands of saints, all under command of God to bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ? Dearly beloved, let this debt be canceled at once. Send the money to Bro. E. E. Byrum, Grand Junction, Mich. stating the object, and it will be applied to the debt, and you shall receive your reward, and God will be glorified. Please brethren, for Jesus’ sake do not neglect this. Decide before you lay down this paper that you will do your duty. Ask God to show you how much to give. Again we warn you in the love of God, forget not this duty. Amen.

To the Saints of God: May God bless you all. I am praising God this morning for salvation from all sin, and a disposition to keep clear of all appearance of sin. Praise God! But I realize what the apostle meant when he said, they that would live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecutions, and what the apostle meant when he said, He (Jesus) came to his own and his own received Him not. When the truth comes to day they will not have it. Who is it that will not receive it but them that profess to be His children? And some of them claim to be sanctified. Oh may God open their blind eyes. Well I have just returned from Altamont, Kan. where Brother and Sister Faucett and Sister Gunning and I held a precious little meeting in the name of Jesus. Two dear souls were delivered from the Church of Christ sect, and were buried with Christ in baptism Sunday evening. We closed the meeting with the calculation of going back to hold another meeting in the near future, the Lord willing. Pray for the dear ones at that place, dear Brother and Sister Lott, Brothther and Sister Waite. They will have some hard oppositiom. That is a hard place; it is wrapped in delusions, the worst I ever saw any place; but I believe the few services we held opened the eyes of some of them. Your brother in the one body, sanctified now,

Dear Saints: I am glad to report victory on the Lord’s side. We held meetings near Ayers Post Office, Miss. We had a glorious meeting. One followed the Lord in baptism. Three more to follow soon. We had ordinance meeting at the close of the meeting. Twenty took part. Oh how the Lord blessed the dear ones in following the meek and lowly Lamb, and blessed the sinners. Several wept while looking on. Praise the Lord! We went from there to Pleasant Hill. But the devil closed the door on us, and we left there and visited some of the saints on our way to Beach Springs, where we began again in the name of Jesus. The devil raged at first, but the Lord gave power in preaching the word of life. Glory to God! the enemy’s power gave way, and the Lord came in power to save. Five found peace in their souk in this meeting. Three were baptized. The others will follow soon. God bless the dear ones for their kindness to us while with uhem. Dear ones, every where, let us push the battle as never before. Pray God to keep me in all his holy way. Pray for the camp meeting and the work in the South. Your brother in the evening light,

Dear Saints of the Living God: May heaven’s blessings be upon you continually. Amen. I came to this place (Stony Point) Aug 4, and commenced meeting in the name of Jesus, in a school house, which was crowded with people from the beginning, and the congregations increased till the last. The house was entirely too small to accomodate the people that desired to hear the gos-el. The meeting was a glorious victory from beginning to end. Quite a number of dear souls presented themselves to God, at the altar, and

were converted. Some were also sanctified, and established in the present truth. To God be all the glory. The last day was very precious indeed to our souls; had children’s meeting in the afternoon, at which time a number of the little folks came to the mercy seat, and were sweetly saved in Jesus. Praise His name! We expect to have baptizing and ordinance service in the near future. Have some other calls near here, which we hope to fill before the meeting at Dodge, the Lord willing. No one has joined me as a co-worker yet; but expect dear Bro. Baber will be with me in the next meeting, and perhaps as long as I am in this state. Some experienced minister should be at the Dodge meeting (Sept. 5-11). God bless all the dear brethren and sisters in the work, and send whom he will. Amen. Remember me in your prayers. Yours in the one body,

I rejoice in the Lord’ that I can report a walk in Jesus that is brighter and brighter and more joyful in glory. I have been with Brother and Sister Michels to the lumber regions of northwest Wisconsin. Many souls came to God in a covenant not to be broken. There we could meet Europeans, from Scandinavians, of whom many got saved, to Italians. They are scattered into these regions. Here are open school-houses and plenty of forests for grove meetings while in Europe all is monopolized. There no school-house can be had at any price, and halls only in cities, and at good prices. Great fields are being made ready in the northwest for God’s harvest home. God was also with us in signs following, in the healing of many. God called Brother and Sister Michels home to the duties of the children’s home, again leaving me alone without a company. After some days I felt that I should visit my old home and rest, where I have not been for one year. I am now waiting on the Lord for a company to work with, and I feel God wants me west some where. Dear saints, pray for me that God may have his own way in all things, and I may increase with all the increase of God. To Him be all the glory, now and ever. Your brother, separated unto the gospel,

McGrath, Mo., Aug. 6, 1894.

Dear Trumpet Readers: We are glad to report that Jesus is keeping us, and we are seeing precious souls saved, for which we do praise the Lord. Since the Grand Junction C. M. I have been working some in the vicinity of St. James, Mo. with Bro. Tommy Carter. There were a few backsliders reclaimed at that place. From that place the Lord led me to go to the McGrath C. M. where I found dear George Bolds and family, Bro. Ostis Wilson and wife, Bro. A. Markwell, wife and son, and Bro. A. B. Stanbery. The meeting had been going on for two days. It continued over two Sabbaths during which time we saw quite a number of precious souls emerge from nature’s darkness, into the glorious light and liberty of the gospel of the Son of God. About forty in all found rest in the crucified one. Truly God did give us a glorious feast here, notwithstanding the opposition of the world was great. The devil started a picnic in about one-half mile from the camp ground. Some who were pretty well charged with the devil’s slop, came over and tried to disturb the meeting, but the Lord would not permit it. On Sunday the ordinance of baptism was attended to at the beautiful stream known as Bennets Branch; proceeding from a large spring arising from beneath the surface of the earth in a similar manner to the large spring below St. James Mo. On Sunday eve about forty-five took part in washing feet, and the Lord’s supper. The Lord did wonderfully, witness to his saints his approval of these ordinances. On

Monday morning baptism was again attended too. On Tuesday morning we separated from the dear saints. Bro’s Bolds and wife, Bro. O. B. Wilson and wife, and Bro. A. B. Stanbery and myself started for Norwood to hold a camp meeting. Bro. and Sister Markwell to Carthage, Mo. Pray for us and the work here, that much solid work for God may be done. Your brother in the one body of Christ, separated unto the gospel work.

Dear Saints: I know this evening I am saved. Praise the Lord! I am so glad I started in the bright and glorious way while in my young days, for we know as we grow older, our hearts become more heardened in sin. I have been traveling in this straight and narrow way for over five years, and I am not tired of it yet. As I grow older the way grows brighter and brighter, and I am geting more settled in God’s word than I ever was. Pray much for me. Your sister saved and sanctified, ready to do the Lord’s will.

Dear Saints of God: To day finds me saved and trusting in the Lord our Savior. I made missteps and backslid, and went back into the world from the dear Lord. But I found no peace; the scripture would come to me, “The wicked are like the troubled sea when it can not rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.” And I came back to the Lord and he took me in, and to day I am more determined to serve God than ever before. I do intend, by the grace of God, to serve him the remainder of my days. Pray for me, dear ones, that I may ever keep humble and in the order of the Lord. That is my whole heart’s desire, to serve him in the beauty of holiness. I can say of a truth to day that I am justified, and kept by the power of God, ready to be revealed in the last day. Dear Saints and Trumpet Readers: I feel the Lord would have me tell a few of the wonderful things he has done for me. He first sought me out of sin and sectism; and praise his holy name he delivered me from tobacco and all other sins, and sanctified me wholly, and has been keeping me blessedly saved ever since. Oh I find it is truly glorious to trust Father for every thing, and to have every thing consecrated to his will. And I am not afraid to trust him to heal my body as well as my soul. God has healed my body several times. Once he healed me of bad cold that settled in my head so that I could scarcely breathe. But praise our God forever, he gave me faith to breathe a prayer to him, and he did wonderfully heal me instantly. He took all the soreness out of my head and throat so I could sing and praise his name. I ask the prayers of all God’s children, for I feel that I need them. Your brother saved in the one body,

Dear Saints of God: I write my testimony for the first time. I am saved and kept by the power of God. The Lord showed me the way of this blessed salvation. I do praise the Lord for this evening light, and for His cleansing power. He has saved me from my sins, and heals me when I am sick. I do pray the Lord may send some of his Holy Ghost ministers to this settlement. There is work to be done here for the Lord. I stand alone in this place for Jesus. The people all belong to the sect. There are some that never heard the true gospel, and there are some who would love to hear it. Pray for my unsaved husband and children. Pray for me. From your saved sister in Christ,

Dear Saints of God: Truly I can praise the dear Lord to day for a perfect salvation and freedom in the Cord. I am so glad he found me when he did, for I was deep in sectism, and going on with the world, professing and not having a spark of salvation in my soul. For a long time I was under conviction, and felt as there was something more for my poor soul, and I was troubled so much at times, but did not know how to find peace. Then I heard the word preached in the right way and the truth explained, then I could see that I would have to give up all for Christ, this world and also the dress of the world. I know now that it takes us alone to go through the narrow gate. Oh how I do bless the Lord to know that I am on the solid rock, and the storms of life do not move me, and my faith is established in Jesus. I am studying God’s word, and I know I am sinking down deeper in humility. Oh! God has so wonderfully blessed me since I came out in the light. Some of the dear ones that made a start this spring seem to be standing fast on the truth, and others seem very weak. But dear ones, let us all pray mightily for this place. There is a great deal of spiritual advancement needed here. And pray for me that I may ever sink down and always live according to my profession and be ready to do whatsoever God would have me to do. Your sister in Christ,

Dear Saints of the Living God: I believe it to the glory of God to write my testimony to the TRUMPET. I can truly say that I am saved to the uttermost and am fully in the Lord’s hands to be used to His glory. I have been afflicted since a child with a week ankle, caused by a stroke of paralysis. While at C. M., we felt led of God to obey Jas. 5:14. being of late afflicted on the same ankle with something like scroffula. In answer to prayer my ankle which was real crooked, began to straighten. It was very painful for some time, but I do realize it was the power of God. I have not full strength but believe the work is going on. It is at present almost straight. I am still holding on to God for the scrofulous affliction, knowing that God had said in his word that He beareth all our sickness and healeth all our diseases. I am given God all the glory for the wonderful work He has done for me. I ask you all to send an earnest prayer up God in my behalf, while you read these lines, that my faith be strengthened and the healing complete, all for the glory of God.

Your sister saved and kept,

Grand Junction, Mich.

Dearly Beloved: May the peace of God and the riches of his blessings unto salvation rest upon you all. Amen. I feel led to tell you of some of God’s wonderful goodness to me. First I must say, I feel so unworthy of the least of God’s notice. When I look at myself, what a weak worm of the earth I am! But God is so good; he is so merciful. Praise his name! Ofttimes my soul is made to exclaim with the Psalmist, “What is man that thou art mindful of him? or the Son of man that thou visitest him?” How thankful we should be to God for saving our souls from the hand of the wicked one who is dragging so many down to destruction. Truly, God is a loving Father, and Jesus Christ a perfect Savior. A little over three years ago God found my soul which had been wandering here and there, and saved me from my sins. About two years before that time, God saved my soul, but I did not discern the body of Christ; I did not know what the church was, so I could not serve God in all his fullness, not having the proper teaching to know how to measure my life by the word of God. But thank God for a TRUMPET which explained the scriptures, pointed out the way of salvation more plainly and enabled me to find the true people of God.

Now I knew when I first began to serve God that sectarianism was not right, for several reasons; we would often see the members of one denomination envy the members of another denomination. They would also have different beliefs, concerning the word of God. Belief means faith, and the word of God teaches but one faith. “One lord, ONE faith, one baptism,” Eph. 4:5. “Till we all come in the unity of THE faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.”V. 23.

I am glad God has shown me that His people do not need to have their names enrolled in any book on earth to keep them together, but they are all of one spirit; they all understand God’s word alike, because his. Spirit which is given to lead them into all truth, (Jno. 16:13), will reveal to all alike. Praise the Lord our God for his wonderful salvation which saves from all sin (1 Jno. 1:9) and brings a comfort to the possessor, and a joy “unspeakable and full of glory.” Your brother in the one family (church) of God,

Louis A. Noble.

Dear Saints of God: My testimony this morning is that I am still saved and trusting in Jesus, walking in the light. Praise the Lord for a salvation that saves us from all sin! I do praise God that he ever called after me and delivered me out of the Evangelical sect of confusion. When I heard the evening light preached I was willing to accept it and come out of her, and cut loose from the straps and bands that bound me down to the laws and rules of that creed. I do bless the Lord for a deliverance that made me free, for if the Son therefore shall make you free, ye seall be free indeed. Jno. 8:36. This salvation also took all pride out of my heart, such as feathers, and ribbons and gold, which the Word forbids, and says women should dress themselves in modest apparel, with shamefaced ness and sobriety; not with broidered hair, or gold, or costly array, but (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. 1 Tim. 2:9, 10. Also the word condemns the wearing of those large floppy sleeves I see so much amongst the professed children of God, which the Word calls pillows. “Thus saith the Lord God, Woe to the women that sew pillows to all armholes, and make kerchiefs upon the head of every stature to hunt souls! Will ye hunt the souls of my people, and will ye save the souls alive that come unto you? Wherefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I am against your pillows, wherewith ye there hunt the souls to make them fly, and I will tear them from your arms, and will let the souls go, even the souls that ye hunt to make them fly.” — Ezek. 13:18, 20. Bless the Lord, he tore them from my arms, and completely stripped me for the race.

Last March, Bro. Dillon and Co. came here to hold a meeting, and I got up and testified that if there was no other way for me to get down into the will of God, I was even willing to have the Lord take my baby. In a few days I had the desire of my heart and felt satisfied in my soul. About two weeks later, baby began to suffer with a cough which we supposed to be the whooping cough, and we had hands laid on her, and she seemed to be relieved, but did not fully recover. The first of June, I went about fifty miles to my dear brother’s funeral, who died unprepared, which was indeed sad to me. I came home in three days with baby sick, so I got ready to go to the Grand Junction camp meeting. Arrived there on the evening of the 14th, and dear Bro. Warner took me to the TRUMPET office and he annointed her and laid on hands, and she seemed so much relieved that she rested better that night than she had for nearly a week. So it went till Sunday night, we had prayer for her and my second little girl, who had spasms on the camp ground, and she was healed; but baby, we got the witness, she would not be healed. So Monday, husband and I started home, making the trip in three hours. That night baby took a spasm, and continued one week, when the Lord took her from me. She was so sweet to me; she was too sweet and pure for this world. Bless the Lord! His will be done in all things. I do realize more and more that God is so precious to my soul, and my desire is to sink down deeper into his holy will. I have been very much afflicted in body the last three months, and I ask all the dear saints to pray forme, that I may  be healed and get strong. Also pray for husband who is not well; he is troubled with something like heart trouble. Pray that he may get well and strong in body. The Lord is our physician. I want all to pray that I may be more humble and keep myself low down at Jesus’ feet, ready to do the whole will of God. My whole desire is to see precious souls saved; I want to so live before my family that I can bring up my children in the fear of God. Pray for me. Your sister, saved and sanctified,

Clarinda Schleehauf.

Hoppertown, Mich., June 22, 1894.

Little Johnnie Lawver closed his eyes to this life, and went to live with Jesus; aged three years, one month and two days. Little Johnnie was taken sick the fifth of May with lung trouble, and quick consumption took him away. His mind seemed to mature from the time he was taken sick, far beyond his years. We had hopes of his recovery until the night before he died. His eyes were bright and his face cheerful and talked until the last. He was so patient through all his sickness, that truly he was an example that older ones might follow. He passed away without a struggle, but just as though he was going to sleep. This has been the hardest trial of faith through which we have had to pass, but the grace of God has reconciled us to his will, and we mourn not as those that have not hope. May God save those of our children that are left and prepare them to meet their little brother in heaven. Bro. Palmer conducted the funeral services at the Hoppertown school-house.

Our Johnnie dear, oh! can it be,
Thy face no more on earth we see?
A little bud we nourished here,
Has gone to blossom over there.

But all who live must pass away,
To endless night or eternal day;
So in our Goa we put our trust,
Until our earth returns to dust.

Your saved sister,

Julia Lawver.

BABYLON,

And What it Includes.

_____

BABYLON is a term, in general use throughout the whole of Christendom. From every side can be heard the voice of some would-be reformer, rising before the public, with his cherished tenet, and to gain notoriety, begins to cry against Babylon. This one tries to prove that one to be under the yoke of confusion; that one in return puts forth all his zeal, heated by the partiality that fills his heart for the faction to which he is married, and with all the power of words, sophistry and fabricated cajolery that can be produced, he decries all others and exalts himself. But among all the leaders of the multiplicity of creeds, there are none who according to God’s eternal truth have a definite knowledge or spiritual understanding of what the Babylon condemned by God’s word, embraces.

The Holy Spirit being my guide, the word of God the man of my counsel, or the fountain head from whence are drawn all the glorious truths pertaining to the kingdom of Jesus Christ, I will by this immutable word, in the simplicity of the gospel, show what Babylon is in her true character. Before any one begins to cry, first let him learn what to cry against and who is commanded to cry. The man in the mud must not censure the man in the mire. The eye in which there is a beam should not endeavor to magnify the mote in some other eye. We are duty bound to abide by the decision rendered by the infallible judgment of God’s word.

Babylon used in prophecy by both the prophets under the old dispensation and the new, is a mystical phrase, derived from something literal, and used to convey to the mind an understanding of something spiritual. And to thoroughly understand the anti-type or spiritual, we must consider the type or the shadow of the thing in question. Literal Babylon was the ancient capital of Assyria, and for centuries was the most magnificent as well as the most important city of the world. It was founded by Nimrod, Gen. 10:10, some think about 2640 B. C. From whence it derived its name will be seen from the following quotation from Josephus Read also Gen. 11:1-9. Speaking of Nimrod who excited the people to build, as he said, a tower to heaven, and escape the vengeance of the Almighty, if in the future he should undertake to destroy the earth again by flood, he says:

“The multitude were very ready to follow the determination of Nimrod, and to esteem it a piece of cowardice to submit to God; and they built a tower, neither sparing any means, nor being at any degree negligent about the work. * * * But when God saw them acting so madly, he did not resolve to destroy them utterly, since they were not grown wiser by the destruction of the former sinners [antediluvians], but he caused a tumult among them by producing in them divers languages, and causing that through the multitude of those languages, they should not be able to understand one another. The place wherein they built the tower is now called Babylon, because of the confusion of that which they readily understood before, for the Hebrew means by the word Babel, confusion.”

The kingdom of Babylon increased in power and glory until it was styled the “glory of kingdoms,” and the praise of the whole earth. The height thereof reached as it were unto heaven, and the dominion thereof unto the end of the earth. Dan. 4:11, 22. This kingdom reached the summit of its glory under the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, who carried the people of God into captivity. The Babylonians were an idolatrous people, and were enemies to the Jews, and very hostile toward the king and inhabitants of Jerusalem. The Jews were a people of theocracy, until they were carried away from Jerusalem. Then they were bound by these worshippers of false gods, and no longer enjoyed the freedom once bestowed upon them in the city of their God, When this kingdom was exalted seemingly to the highest point attainable, and had subdued the whole earth, it seemed to be impregnable against the combined powers of all her adversaries. But the King of kings dethroned the mighty monarch and delivered his kingdom to the Medes and Persians. After the fall of this haughty kingdom, Babylon became a desolation, inhabited by wild beasts, and night monsters. It never was nor never will be rebuilt to regain its former magnificence, but will always be something of the past.

Thus we have an abridged description of literal Babylon, from which we will learn why it is a type of mystical Babylon or sectism.

THE KINGDOM OF CHRIST AND ITS FORM.

Jesus Christ the Son of God descended from the heavenly throne on a mission of love, to redeem the human race from the degenerated state into which they had fallen. Luke 1:68. This work was begun under the ministry of John. Mark 1:1. And completed by Jesus during his incarnation, and the Holy Spirit after his ascension. Christ built his church or kingdom. Mat. 16:18. This church was holy. Eph. 5:25, 27. For it was the body of Christ. Eph. 1:22, 23. There was but one body or church. 1 Cor. 12:12, 13. Jesus was the door. Jno. 10:7-9. And doorkeeper. Isa. 22:22. Rev. 3:7, 8. God took in the members. 1 Cor. 12:18. Members entered this body by being born of the Spirit. 1 Cor. 12:13. Psa. 87:3-6. The class book was kept in heaven and the Lord himself entered the names of those who were “born again.” Psa. 87:6. Heb. 12:22, 23. The government of this church was given entirely into the hands of Christ. Isa. 9:16. 22:23. The Lord turned out the disobedient or unfruitful. John 15:1, 2. He alone could obliterate the names placed upon the heavenly class book. Ex. 32:33. This church had but one Lord, one faith, and one baptism. Eph. 4:4, 5. And was named of the father. Eph. 3:15. Who kept it in his name. Jno. 17:12. This church was the house of God. 1 Tim. 3:15. God’s people were the house. Heb. 3:6. It was a visible church. Mat. 5:14. They had but one mind. 1 Cor. 1:10. And that was the mind of Christ. 1. Cor. 2:16. Phil. 2:5. They had but one mouth. Rom. 15:6. It spoke but one thing. 1 Cor. 1:10. That was a pure language. Zeph. 3:9. They recognized Jesus only as being head of the church. Col. 1:18. And God alone was the organizer. Eph. 4:11-16.

THE APOSTASY.

According to prophecy, false teachers appeared, bringing in damnable heresies (destructive sects). 2 Pet. 2:1, 2. People followed them, departing from the faith (received from Christ), giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils. 1 Tim. 4:1-3. Departing from the God of heaven and his church, hewing them out broken cisterns that can hold no water. Jer. 2:13. About the last of the first century, seeds of corruption were planted, watered and nourished; and about 270 A. D. fruit began to be manifest that was gathered from the nefarious doctrines of anti-christ. The nations began to drink the soul-polluting waters, the source of which was in the bottomless pit, and were forced from thence by the propelling engine of iniquity, operated by the archfiend, hater of all truth and righteousness. Ere long the man of sin was revealed, 2 Thess. 2:1-8, who opposeth (all truth) and exalteth himself above all that is called God or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. This man of sin began to reign about the time mentioned above, when those that were called bishops or elders, and who should have fed the church of God, departed from the faith; and being instigated by unholy passions, gave way to the corruptness of their hearts, becoming vain and supercilious; and to gain notoriety a tribunal was erected, and man took upon himself the prerogative of God. Jesus Christ was excluded and man set up; God’s throne cast down and man’s exalted. Jesus was no longer recognized as head of Christendom. Man ascended the throne, and in the eyes of all nations soon became an infallible, unerring judge; possessing power to absolve from sin, also to excommunicate, imprison and decapitate all who failed to humble themselves before this “son of perdition.”

This was the beginning of that great anti-christ power, noted for the slaughter of about fifty millions of people, and is styled Roman Catholicism. This was the little horn that came up among the powers of Rome, became so notorious, and that wore out the saints of the most high God, changing times and laws that were established by the living God. Dan, 7:8, 21, 25. This was the beast John saw, with blasphemies written upon him against God almighty. Rev. 13:1-7. And the woman in the filthiness of fornication; and is called Mystery Babylon, the great, the mother of harlots and abominations of the earth. Rev. 17:1-6. This “Babylon the great” exalteth herself as it were to heaven, in defiance of the power and word of the omnipotent God; and built a tower in which man was raised to the summit of human praise and magnificence; and with the eye of wantonness peering through the telescope of vain glory, he perceived many things in the kingdom of sin, that could be produced by ignorance and superstition, to satiate his salacious nature.

But the merciful Benefactor of heaven thought to deliver all honest souls from the intricacy of such deleterious-doctrines, and from the power of such rapacious and haughty priests of darkness. The Almighty selected from the confusion of Rome, a poor working man’s son, Martin Luther, a mendicant friar, who found the precious word of God at Erfurth in 1503. Treasuring the glorious truths of the divine oracles in his heart, and after passing through one of those Satanic holes (convent) filled with corruption, vice and crime, he came forth proclaiming justification by faith through the blood of Jesus Christ. And from the seemingly small beginning of a few theses tacked on the cathedral door at Wittemburg, the truth of God went forth increasing in power. And as the mighty missiles of the everlasting words were hurled at this colossus, it began to crumble. As ancient Babel was confused with so many different languages, just so was this “great Babylon” knocked into hundreds of fragments or sects, each called Protestant, and not one able to comprehend the other’s meaning. Here we come to another power styled

PROTESTANTISM.

This power is represented by the second beast John saw. Rev. 13:11. Romanism as a lion was fierce and strong; but the second beast or Protestantism had the appearance of a lamb, seemingly docile and harmless. The two horns representing the rise of this power by two sects or doctrines. At Augsburg, Germany, in 1530, Zwingle the reformer of Switzerland and Luther, met at what is known as the great Augsburg Confession. Luther believing the doctrine of consubstantiation with the aid of Malancthon had their written articles of faith. Zwingle rejecting this doctrine firmly held to what he thought was truth. These differences gave rise to the Reformed German and Lutheran sects, hence the two horns of Protestantism. Remember this beast had two horns when it arose; since then many more fragments of Catholicism have been gathered up and appear also.

Leaving many points unnoticed for want of space, we compare the two powers. Romanism is said to be in utter darkness. We read, “In that day [when people forsake God and exalt man], saith the Lord God, I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day. Behold the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord.” — Amos 8:9, 11. Popery so destroyed the Word, and hid it from the people, that only priests and monks were allowed the privilege of reading the law of God, and they, filled with delusions, kept not the holy precepts. The reformation of the sixteenth century restored this to the inhabitants of the earth, but did not bring back the purity of the primitive church.

I have mentioned this two-horned, lamblike beast, coming up out of the earth (an earthly born institution), and it spake like a dragon i. e., with tongues of devils, or with deceitfulness and hypocrisy. As God is the author of peace and not confusion, we must conclude that the many doctrines of Protestantism that causes such intense altercations among themselves, have their origin in the mouth of Satan, father of every lie and dissension. The Lord says, And it shall come to pass in that day [Protestantism] that the light [God’s word, Ps. 119:105, 130] shall not be clear nor dark: but it shall be one day which shall be known to the Lord, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light.” — Zech. 14:6, 7.

The question will arise. How do you know this speaks of Potestantism? In verse 4, we read, “And his [Christ’s] feet shall stand in that day [just mentioned] upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and on the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley, and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north and half of it toward the south.” Mount Olives east of Jerusalem was the place from which the Son of God ascended to the Father. Being east of the city, representing the rising of the sun, or the coming forth of the glorious gospel of the sun of righteousness. During the reign of Popery, the sun or Jesus and his gospel, were completely hid from the people; the moon, or church, failed to shine in the beauty of truth; many stars, or saints of God who were lights to this dark world, fell beneath the tyranny of the “man of sin.” Mark 13:24, 25. And in the sixteenth century the Almighty stepped forth from the dreadful darkness that had hid his face, and taking his stand upon mount Olives, overlooking Jerusalem or the church of Christ, sent from thence glorious rays of truth and righteousness. The night of superstitution began to recede before the mighty thunderbolts of the divine Word. But alas! instead of receiving the Word only as an infallible rule, the multitude coming from utter darkness, and the filthy mire of fallacious spirits, and the intolerant slavery of this monstrous beast (Romanism), to them a small ray of light seemed extraordinary bright. Satan, taking advantage of this, saw many ways to enlarge his domain. Not coming to the unity of the faith, and all clinging to some particle of Romish corruption, one would still adhere to this, another to that; hence the great mass of people from whom the gospel should have emanated, was seen to cleave in the midst thereof toward the North, South, East and West; that is, they were scattered to the four winds of the earth.

CHURCHES OF ANTICHRIST.

“One shall say, I am the Lord’s; and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob; and another shall subscribe with his hand unto the Lord, and surname himself by the name of Israel.” — Isa. 44:5. How plainly are these heresies manifest, and these prophecies fulfilled, in the multiplicity of creeds; such as, Lutheran, Baptist, Methodist, Campbellite, Dunkard, Episcopalian, Congregationalist, Presbyterian, Mennonite, U. B. ism, and hundreds of other isms, ites and ists, all filled with an antagonistic spirit one toward another! Luther, though never free from many errors received from Rome, yet saw the evil of division. He said, “Where in the church do we see the will of God performed? One bishop rises up against another bishop, one church against another church; priests, monks, nuns, quarrel, fight and battle. In every place there is naught but discord, and yet each party exclaim that their meaning is good, their intention upright. And thus to the honor and glory of God (?) they altogether perform a work of the devil. One saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. Is Christ divided? God forbid. Ye are carnal. Thus the corruption of man’s heart is manifest by the carnal divisions he causes.”

CAUSE OF DIVISION.

D’Aubigne the French historian, says, “The strong bond which originally united the members of the church, was that living faith of the heart which connected them all with Christ as their common head. Different causes soon concurred to originate and develop the idea of a necessity for external union. Men accustomed to the political forms and associations of an earthly country, carried their views and habits into the spiritual kingdom of Christ. * * * But the form and the life became disunited; the semblance of an identical and exterior organization was gradually substituted for that interior and spiritual communion, which is the essence of the religion of God. Men forsook the precious perfume of faith, and bowed down before the empty vessel that had contained it. They sought other bonds of union, for faith no longer connected the members of the church; and they were united by means of bishops, archbishops, popes, mitres, canons and ceremonies. The living church, retiring gradually within the lonely sanctuary of a few solitary hearts, an external church was substituted in its place. * * * Originally whoever possessed the Spirit of Jesus Christ was a member of the church; now the terms were inverted, and it was maintained that he only who was a member of the church [external organization] could receive the Spirit. * * * The salvation of souls no longer depended entirely on faith in Christ; but also, and in a more special manner, on union with the church.” — Vol. 1, Page 39. 40.

God’s church is a sanctified church. Eph. 5:25-27. This sanctification comes by faith. Acts 26:18. Knits us together in love. Col. 2:2. And makes us all one. Heb. 2:11. Uniting us to Christ our “common head,” praise the Lord! The nations forsaking this faith, gave rise to all the factions called organizations, that disorganize and scatter the human race in numberless schisms. We have from the mouth of Protestantism itself, words, through this reputable historian, that should cause honest souls to awake from the lethargy that sectism has thrown over them. That they have repudiated the glorious faith of the Son of God, that united all the saved and caused them to have but one head, and in its stead they invented external creeds.

Now salvation does not depend entire-on faith in Christ, among Protestants, but we hear them cry, “Come and join the church.” “You must have a home.” Thus they teach, instead of saying, Get salvation and abide in Christ alone. To prove that Protestants are united (or rather disunited) by bishops, priests and ceremonies, we give an illustration. If a person or persons really get converted among them, and stand aloof from all divisions or sects, they are reckoned to be in an unorganized form; but let them come, give the preacher their hand, have him place their names on a piece of paper, and they are now reckoned to be in a united form.

O what confusion and blindness cast over the dupes of Satan! They have departed from the Lord, and forsaken the fountain of living waters (faith in Christ) and are written in the earth, Jer. 17:13, instead of in heaven. It is an utter impossibility for one to join the church of Jesus; he must be born into it. Ps. 87:56. 1 Cor. 12:13.

EFFECT OF THE TRUTH AMONG PROTESTANTS.

Let a man of God get among some so- called church members of to day, and begin to preach one faith, one baptism, one church, one way; whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; “He that committeth sin is of the devil;” follow Jesus our example; be not unequally yoked together with unbelievers; come out from among them; deliver thyself from Babylon; abide in Jesus alone; and soon you will see the carnality stirred to such an extent that a terrible mania follows, and from their appearance one would think that the archfiend of hell had broken his cage, or some diabolical apparition had appeared in their midst, to drag them to the infernal regions, and the only way to pacify him was to break forth in such ungodly torrents of anger, sending anathemas upon and decrying the truth of God, thus verifying their allegiance to his will and fallacious tenets. Satan smiles at his deluded votaries, claiming to follow Christ, yet giving him their whole service.

CONFUSION OF SECTISM.

Luther preached justification by faith, and Christ the one that saves from sin, and yet he said after contending with those fanatical prophets of his day, “May God of his mercy preserve me from a church in which there are none but saints.” A saint is a holy person, and a holy person is one freed from sin. Christ’s people are saved from sin. Mat. 1:21. Every sin a man doeth is without (outside) the body (church). 1 Cor. 6:18. A man cannot be a member of the church of God and not be a saint, or one who lives without committing sin. Any thing to the contrary is positively contradicting the divine word. Read 1 Jno. 3:8, 9.

The Baptist sect though claiming a succession from the primitive church established by Christ, and calls itself “the church,” nevertheless is of anti-christ. Though boasting of a succession and calling all other isms daughters of the mother of harlots, she must lay aside her arrogance and take her position by the side of her unchaste sisters. A few quotations will be sufficient to show the blindness of this sect. D. B. Ray, editor of the American Baptist, decries the truth in bitter terms. After trying to prove Daniel and Paul to be sinners, he speaks of a people claiming purity of heart and to live without sin, calls them self righteous, trying to attain something impossible. But adhering to immersion as the only mode of baptism, he is compelled to acknowledge the truth, and to contradict his own doctrine, thus “being condemned of himself.”

In his book entitled BAPTIST SUCCESSION, he says, “When an individual has been spiritually crucified with Christ, or killed to the love of sin, and is dead to or freed from sin, he should be buried with Christ in baptism, and arise to walk in newness of life. That persons should be children of God, or freed from sin, before baptism, is proved from all those scriptures which ascribe salvation and eternal life to faith in Christ.” Page 204-5. Baptists must acknowledge one of two things; either they as a sect are free from sin, or that of all those admitted into their creed, there are none who have complied with the truth of God.

Again, speaking of the Novatians, trying to prove them to be a link that connects the chain of succession, he says, “They were regarded as real saints before baptism; they did not therefore baptize I sinners to make saints of them. Thus we discover that the Novatians held the Baptist doctrine of burying in baptism only those who were dead to, or freed from sin.” Page 317.

Say “saint” to a modern Baptist, and he will call you a Mormon. Tell him he must be sanctified, be holy, pure, or free from sin, and he will say it is preposterous. How will you reconcile such a conglomereration of confusion or fabricate sophistry? Wc appeal to all Baptists who desire truth, You are compelled to acknowledge that you are a congregation of real saints or sinless people, or look elsewhere for a link to connect your succession, instead of those Novatian brethren.

The Lord says, Let us reason together. Am I wrong? Page 180 we read, “It wall be found upon strict inquiry, that the Baptists are the only people who take the Bible alone as their rule of faith and practice in church matters.” To find a strict account concerning the true church, we return to the Word. Are Baptists governed by this holy discipline? I think not, for the following reasons: It was given so that the man of God could be sanctified or perfect in righteousness. Jno. 17:17. 2 Tim. 3:16, 17. Baptists do not believe a man can be holy. Jesus opens the door of his own church. Isa. 22:22. Rev. 3:7. Baptists open the doors of their creed; Christ does not. Members are born into the church of Christ. Psa. 87:6. People are voted into the Baptist sect. All offices in the church of God are filled by people chosen by God and qualified by the Holy Spirit. 1 Cor. 12:4-11, 18, 28. On the other side, we quote from the above mentioned book, “The very fact that the ministers or elders are chosen or ordained by the churches, proves that they are inferior in point of authority, to the churches which have invested them with the ministerial office.” Page 212.

How is this, compared to the heavenly church? Baptist preachers chosen, ordained and invested with ministerial offices all by a company of fallible men! Is it strange that these carnal priests, upholding a carnal creed, should reject the discipline of heaven, such passages as 1 Jno. 2:6. 3:2-10. 4:17. 5:18. Rom. 16:16. 1 Cor. 16:20. 2 Cor. 13:12. 1 Thess. 5:26. 1 Pet. 5:14. Jno. 13:12-17? Being unholy, they cannot perform a holy act. “Baptists recognize equal rights and privileges in the execution of the laws of the kingdom of Jesus Christ.” Page 209. True, there is an equallity among the members of Christ’s church, but not in the Baptist creed, called “the church.” The quotation above disputes this; it says ministers are inferior in point of authority to the members who chose them. If this is not Babylon or confusion, where can it be found? “Come out of her my people;” “touch not the unclean thing.”

The Free Methodist sect makes loud boasts of holiness, and as the prophet says, bellow as bulls. Jer. 50:11, 12. Founded by B. T. Roberts in 1860, she is among the hindmost nations, or latest-built sects. Their little hobby is of such a carnal nature that God’s word cannot govern it; and to restrain the haughty little harlot, a discipline was constructed by man to suit her nature, giving her members license to do as they please respecting baptism, etc.

The M. E’s claiming to be a Christian association, have wandered far from what they originally were. The preaching of Wesley, founder of Methodism, was very different from that of its modern teachers now. Wesley, in contending for Christian perfection, and answering objections says, “But surely we cannot be saved from sin while we dwell in a sinful body,” A sinful body? I pray observe how deeply ambiguous, how equivocal, this expression is! But there is no authority for it in scripture: the word sinful body is not found there, and as it is totally uncsriptural, so it is palpably absurd. For no body or matter of any kind, can be sinful; spirits alone are capable of sin. Pray, in what part of the body should sin lodge? It cannot lodge in the skin, nor in the muscles, or nerves, or veins, or arteries; it cannot be in the bones, any more than in the hair or nails; only the soul can be the seat of sin.” Sermons, Vol, 2, P. 172.

Again he says, “Who is a gospel minister? He and he alone that does declare the whole counsel of God; who does preach the whole gospel, even justification and sanctification, preparatory to glory, having himself the mind that warm Christ, and steadily walking as he walked.” But no where in all her societies do we hear the whole gospel preached, or see her ministers walking as Jesus the lowly Son of God. Bishop Foster’s description of his sect, given in the tract entitled Babylon is Fallen, will convey to the minds of all honest souls the true condition of M. E. ism.

==========

Atlanta, Kan.

Dear Saints of God: I feel led to write my testimony. I do praise the Lord for saving and keeping grace. I am so glad I started to serve God while I am yet young, only sorry that I did not start sooner. This is just a glorious way to live; so much better than to live the life of a sinner and then lose my soul. For what would it profit a man, if he should gain the whole word and then lose his soul? or what would he give in exchange for his soul? Pray much for me that I stand true to God. Your sister saved and sanctified,

Jennie Grimes.
