Press the Battle.

_____

To God’s workers in the field.

From out the chambers of my soul
I hear a gentle whispering voice
Say, “Press the battle hard, my child,
Resist the blast so fierce and wild,
Make heaven’s love thy only choice,
Gain it at last, Ob reach thy goal!”

The help of human skill is vain,
To aid in this terrific fight
Against the darkness in the land;
But trust ye to God’s-mighty hand,
He’ll guide you by supernal light,
And “more than conq’rer” you shall reign.

Press then, the battle, with thy might,
Go in the strength of Israel’s God,
Fear not the weakly powers of clay
With all the pomp of sect array,
But with the “sword of truth,” the word,
Put every lurking foe to flight.

Go ye in meekness from above,
And suffer much in Jesus’ name;
Embrace the flames of furnace heat,
The Savior’s life of pain repeat;
Thus to the world you may proclaim
The Gospel of infinite love.

Thy children dear to thee indeed,
May in a distant land remain,
The wide, deep sea may intervene,
The ocean’s space may lie between;
But you may know, beyond the main,
God’s band of love and care will lead.

They too may rise and bless the name
In which you suffer toil, and teach;
They too may honor Christ our Lord
In gathering in your rich reward,
And many a precious soul they’ll reach,
For whom the suffering Savior died.

Then press the battle! onward move!
All victory lieth on thy side,
Be valiant in the hottest fight
With legions hold, of hellish night;
Uphold the Christ who for us died,
And all his faithfulness you’ll prove.

He’ll prove to you his love sincere,
His guarding arms will you enfold,
He’ll give you precious souls for hire,
He’ll fill you with celestial fire;
With scenes of rapture, all untold,
He’ll close at last thy blest career.

__________

THE LORD IS NEAR TO COME.

_____

WHILE meditating on some of the word of God and looking around at the wickedness, I have felt like sending a few words to the TRUMPET that may awaken some.

Notice Mat. 24:27. For as the lightning cometh out of the east and shineth unto the west, so shall the coming of the Lord be. Jesus was talking to his disciples, and they had asked him what the signs of his coming would be. And now he gives them a comparison. So now to look at the great mass of people that are in such confusion and revelry, surely the sign of his coming is here. We may notice the lightning playing to and fro some time before the storm reaches us. We read in the 37th verse: As in the days of Noah, so shall the coming of the Son of man be. Well dear ones, surely we are fast reaching this time. Many of the people in sectism are looking for Christ. The whole world seems to be expecting something. This was the state of things before the birth of Christ. All were looking for some great event to take place, but it did not come as they expected.

Oh the thousands that are deceived by the Millennium doctrine! Oh dear ones, are we whom God has given this blessed evening light doing all we can to uncover and expose all such isms that are cloaking hundreds of precious souls that have built their hopes on the sand and shall have to take their solemn departure into the lake of fire and weep and wail out an awful existence in the pit because of the awful deception? Oh surely amidst the multitude there are some true children of God.

Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken. This all has taken place in the dark day of Romanism, as most all understand, and the word of God clearly shows that it is the Spirit and the church. God draws a beautiful picture of Christ and his church in creating the sun and the moon. As the sun is the source of all literal light to the solar system, so Christ is the source of all spiritual light. And they were darkened in the apostasy, when the spiritual sky became darkened by human inventions. And the stars were the train of holy men and women that fell away. But I do not feel led to dwell upon this, as we feel there are other things God would have us dwell upon. Any who wish to have it more clear will find by reading Bro. Schell’s book on prophecy, that all is very plain.

After all this takes place then shall the signs of his coming be seen. He shall be seen coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. Truly he is to be seen coming out of the clouds (sectism), that is, bringing his people out; and now the word is being preached in all its purity, backed up by the power of the Holy Spirit, and the signs following, and the glory is seen upon their faces. Hag. 2:9 — The glory of the latter house shall be greater than that of the former, saith the Lord of hosts. Mat. 24:31 — And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. Now learn a parable of the fig tree. When his branche is yet tender and putteth forth leaves ye know that summer is nigh; so likewise when ye shall see these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. Now we see the angels flying, and hear the sound of the trumpet which calls God’s people all into the oneness. Jesus says, Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass till all these things be fulfilled. By “this generation” Jesus did not mean the disciples to whom he was talking, but those who would be alive to see the angels or messengers. Truly this is the last reformation; and these words of his are in harmony with Isaiah: “The sun shall be no more thy light by day, neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee; but the Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God, thy glory. Thy sun shall no more go down, neither shall thy moon withdraw itself; for the Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended. Thy people also shall be all righteous: they shall inherit the land forever, the branch of my planting, the work of my hands, that I may be glorified. A little one shall become a thousand, and a small one a strong nation: I the Lord will hasten it in his time.” — 60:19-22. No more sinners and saints yoked up together. When the word is preached in all its purity. When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughter of Zion and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgement and the spirit of burning. Oh let all of us whom God has called to sound this trumpet keep our censers filled with fire from off the altar; and the way to do this is by keeping our consecration complete, and our covenant with God, so that our sacrifice will be acceptable.

Now let us read 2 Thes. 2. They had been looking for the coming of Christ, and Paul told them, “Now we beseech you brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, that ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, not by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at Hand. Let no man deceive you by any means; for that day shall not come except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed the son of perdition; who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshiped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.” Yes, presuming to have the power to forgive sin, and to redeem souls or to curse them, and he is deceiving many.

So we know that the falling away has been during the dark reign when a great number of holy men and women were overcome; and since the son of perdition is so plainly seen and now the gathering together is taking place, we know it is the last time. So let us continue much in prayer and supplication, that we may be counted worthy to escape all these things that are coming upon the world.

While reading an article from one of the missionaries in China, my eyes melted to tears when I saw the zeal and willingness they had to spread the gospel and yet were not privileged to have it carried in its purity and fullness; and I remembered the words of Jesus where he said, this gospel must be preached to all nations for a witness, then shall the end come. This poor missionary said the natives were very much addicted to the opium habit, and by the carefulness of medical aid they were cured. My heart went up to God as I thought of what power and willingness He had to heal them if they were taught. And seeing the state of things in China, my eyes filled with tears, and I lifted my heart to God to lay his hand on some one, and I am sure he will. Doubtless some one will when they read this, if not before, hear a voice saying, Who will go for us? and whom will I send? And I pray God you may say, Here am I, send me. You may say. Oh if I had the means! Well dear one, we must be willing to suffer, and yet have faith that God will provide; for he hath said, Lo I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. With the pure love of God in my soul I could go any place that he should wish to send me if I only could reach souls. It is not the multitude that we reach as missionaries, only the few that are willing to receive; so we need good staying qualities. Remember that the great love of God reaches out to the few, and God has all things ready to hasten this reformation. We can now cross the Atlantic in six days, and then we have the fast trains to convey God’s angels. And dear ones, it is not all in running, but there is something in working and staying. There are many places in America where we can in three or ten days have a real harvest of souls. But dear ones, when we enter the city to work for God it takes more time, especially in these old countries where sectism is so deep.

“And I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation and kindred and tongue and people, saying with a loud voice, Fear God and give glory to him, for the hour of his judgement is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters. And there followed mother angel saying, Babylon is fallen is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the vine of the wrath of her fornication. And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead or in his hand, the same shall drink of he wine of the wrath of God which s poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up forever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.” Rev. 14:6-11.

Your sister, separated unto the gospel,

Lena L. Shoffner.

__________

EXCUSES.

_____

AN excuse is as a general thing, presented by the evil spirit to the minds of God’s little ones to keep them from performing the great duties God has enjoined upon them to do. By listening to evil presentations we are apt to get in the condition where we think we cannot do what God requires of us, and we become disobedient children of God; We have grieved his Holy Spirit out of our hearts, and where are we? Left in darkness, because the light of Jesus is not burning in our soul, and we are poor wretched beings. Why? Because we have listened to the devil’s excuses and it has brought misery and woe upon us. We lose all desire out of our hearts of going to meeting; the precious book is laid upon the shelf with its pages covered with dust, showing that it has not been read for some, time, instead of its being studied with tender care, and its precepts treasured up within true and honest hearts. Dear ones, when that desire is gone from our hearts to study God’s precious word, we are far from where God would have us. When prayer meeting night comes the excuse is a great many times, “Oh I am so tired; I have worked so hard to day that I do not feel like going;” or “It looks very much like rain, and we certainly will get wet;” or “There are so few of us to meet together, I don’t believe there is any use of going; there will be no good accomplished; we can just as well stay at home and pray.” The word of God teaches us that we should not forsake the assembling of ourselves together, and certainly when we are just where God would have us, we will love to go to meeting and tell what the good Lord has done and is doing for us; we will not listen to the frivolous excuses the devil may present before us, but will say, Get thee behind me, Satan, I will not listen to the cunning craftiness of the devil.

Some of God’s children have formed an excuse, and that excuse to keep them from meeting or from doing something that God has led them to do wherein He might have received glory and honor, and by forming and listening to excuses they have really lost or grieved the Spirit of God out of their soul, but still go on with a dead profession which merely comes from the lips instead of from the heart, and a slight, silly excuse looks to be a good and a reasonable excuse in their mind and they are willing to yield. How many will work until a late hour and then come into the house, eat supper and look at the clock, and say, “It is too late to go to meeting to night!” Beware, dear ones! if we are not careful it will be too late to enter heaven; the last summons will come, the angel will call us away, the doors of heaven will be closed, our soul will be lost, because we have formed too many excuses.

How many sisters will wash, mop, bake and do house-work in general through the day, and when night comes they are too tired to walk a short distance, and dislike to deprive themselves of an hour or so of sleep for the sake of meeting at the house of God and spending there an hour of sacred bliss in worshipping the blessed Lord! Dear sisters, let us sacrifice for the Lord. If we are not able to do as much work as we would like in one day and go to meeting, let us divide up our work and leave a portion of it for the next day, and if God permits us to live to finish our work the day following, we will feel better in our body and sweeter in our soul, because then we can feel that we have done the will of God.

How many brethren that live perhaps a few miles from meeting, work hard through the week, and when Saturday night comes, are tired and weary in body, and when Sabbath morning comes they will not feel like arising early and hitch up their team and drive a few miles with their families to the house of worship, but would rather remain at home and rest and feel refreshed to begin Monday’s work again! Monday morning comes with its toils and cares, and our bodies may feel rested, but our soul weary because we have been negligent in doing the will of God. Meeting is a glorious place to be; it is a glorious place to rest the body and strengthen the soul. God help his children to be as lively stones.

Again, another excuse is, “It looks rainy to day, and I do not want to get my horses wet, so I think it best not to go.” But through the week if they have business in town and it is somewhat rainy they will not stop for rain, but business calls them there; rain or shine, they certainly must go. Dear ones in Christ, let us remember that our Father’s business is the most important business to be attended to. May God help us all to be earnest, and be about our Father’s business and do His will at all times and at all places.

Dear ones, there are no excuses that we can bring up before God if we are not permitted to enter heaven. He has taught us the plain, the strait, and the narrow way, and certainly we cannot bring an excuse before him, if it had not been for this one, or that one, or this thing or that thing, or the opposition that I felt in this brother or that sister. I too, would have lived for God. Truly, if we are looking for opposition from this one or that one we certainly can feel it, because the evil spirit will present evil surmising and imaginations before our minds, and make us feel someone is opposing us in the spirit, when if we would but search our own hearts we would find the fault was right in our own hearts instead fo in those of our brothers and sisters. I have found by experience, this to be the case, as it was the work of the devil to disturb my peace with God. And then again when we know our heart is all right and clear in the sight of God, and we feel an opposing element in another against us, let us cry unto God for victory complete within our soul. We can live this glorious salvation by looking unto Jesus continually with an eye of faith. We can not bring up the opposition before God as an excuse for our backslidings or the leanness which we may feel within our soul, any more than we can any

Deasonvill, Miss.

Dear Saints of God: In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I beseech you all to pray for me. My past life has been one of disappointment and despair concerning this life. I had at one time felt that I was a Christian, but sad to relate. I have made shipwreck of my religious connections. Hence it is that I greatly desire an interest in your prayers to God that my soul may be saved. It is true that I make it a rule to try and do good, yet in the discharge of my devotional exercise I feel that I am still in gross darkness, that God will not hear my prayers. In these efforts to please my Lord, I know that the blame rests with me, that it was my lack of faith that I received no spiritual consolation. Yours I hope in a Saviours love,

Remember in all camp meetings you should go prepared to bed and board yourself if you are possibly able to do so, and more than that see that you take along something to help on the dear ministers of the Gospel. Care for the bodies of those who labor for your souls. Pray over their needs to God. Care enough for their wants to ask them how it is with them, and you may get some information that will help you to know your duty.

Bro. James Willis, Gresham, Neb. writes, “The Lord is moving on his work here. We feel the time has come when we should have a camp meeting in this part of the country, at a town called Tamora, Steward Co., Neb. on the B & M. R. R. beginning Sept. 1st. Now dear brethren we need help in this meeting.

To the saints in Neb. who desire Grove or tent meetings send in your requests. The Lord is giving us the prospects of large crops in Neb. and let us consecrate our gain unto the Lord. Let us work for the time is short, and souls are sinking to hell every moment.

If the Kensington meeting can be put off to Sept. 20, I can come and bring the tabernacle.

There will be a hack run from those two stations; fare twenty-five cents, large trunks some extra charge. All wishing to be met at depot, address Abram Nye, Rochester, Ind. Good canvass tents 9×12 can be rented for use during camp meeting at Neosho Falls, Kan., Sept 6-17, by notifying me at least ten days before meeting begins. Tents will cost about $2.00. Meeting will be held in a beautiful grove just at the edge of town. Well of good water on the ground. Persons attending are requested to furnish their own bedding and other things necessary for use during their stay, as it is impossible to provide for any but workers at this place. Board can be obtained at reasonable rates near the ground. Good seed was sown here last year. We think the attendence from surrounding country will be large. The presence of all saints who can come will be of great aid in the meeting. The park is situated in easy walking distance from the M. K. & T. and Santa Fe R. R’s. Pray that all that we may do, may be done to the glory of God. Your sister in Christ,

Dear Trumpet Readers: We are praising God for a full and free salvation that we enjoy in our souls. We began meeting in the grove at this place Friday evening, and closed Sunday evening with victory on the Lord’s side. Saturday morning our hearts were much rejoiced at the coming of Bro. Byrum. There were also a goodly number of saints here from East Jordan. We had good order during all the meeting. There were eight consecrations in all, some for pardon and some for sanctification. Sunday afternoon we went to the water where one precious soul was buried with Christ in baptism. The church here was much strengthened and edified, and there was such a settling down in to God amongst his little ones. Pray for us that God may keep us very humble. Yours in Jesus,

A. L. and F. M. Sheldon.

Dear Saints: Our last report was from Hollenberg. The Lord gave us a very precious time there. We spoke in our last report of getting a team and travelling by wagon; and we want to say that God has abundantly supplied our needs. He has fitted us out with a complete rig to travel with. We have felt for some time that it was the will of the Lord for us to move out into new fields to labor among those that have never heard the whole truth. We came from Hollenberg to Thompson, Neb; met with the saints there one night and had a glorious meeting. From there, came to Edgar, Neb; met with the saints twice on Sunday, and on Monday came to this place, where we are holding forth in the name of the Lord. We will go to Kenesaw, Neb. and will perhaps be there from

Page 3

the 20th to the 23d, and from there we will take a northwesterly course. We are subject to the will of the Lord at all times, and any change he may see fit to make with us; but if the Lord wills we will take a line from here to Boise City, Idaho. Any one along or near this line between here and there desiring our help please notify us at Thompson, Neb. We go only in the name of Jesus, and we expect to trust God for all that we have. Our work will be mostly altogether in new fields, and we can use thousands of tracts and papers if we have them. Now if any of God’s little ones desires a share in this great work of seed sowing, and feel led to send us tracts and papers, they will be very thankfully received, and distributed to the best of our ability. Any one sending tracts, send the money to the Trumpet office, and we will keep them informed where to send them. Yours in the holy war,

Wm. A. Randolph and E. G. Masters.

Dear Children of God: We are happy to report victory in the name of Jesus. We are all well and sweetly saved in Jesus, for which we give Him all the glory. The month of June we spent in holding a meeting at the Flats, about three miles from this place, which resulted in twelve souls being converted, thirteen being sanctified, eleven were buried with Christ in baptism, and others were won to the truth. We are now holding a tabernacle meeting at the Mahoning meeting house, about three miles from the above place. God is sending his word forth and conviction is resting upon the people. Let all the dear ones aid us in your prayers. Meeting will probably last until the first of August, then we go to Smithport camp meeting, Lord willing. There are many calls for meeting in this country, and we need a large tebernacle very much. If any of the brethern can help us in securing the same, it will enable us to reach many precious souls with the truth, as there are many people that want the truth, but the sectarian forces have united against it and do all they can to keep the truth away from the people. If any one can help us in this movement in any way, please write to me at North Point, Ind., Co. Pa. which will be my permanent address for this summer. Yours in the love of Jesus,

Jerry T. Stowe & Co.

Dear Saints of God: I feel led to write my testimony. I do praise the Lord for a free and full salvation that keeps me each day. I know that I do belong to the Church of the living God, and I am determined to ever prove faithful. We are here alone, but the Lord is keeping us still in the evening light. I want you all to pray for me that I may be healed of pain in my face, if it is the Lord’s will. I am willing to suffer for Christ’s sake. Whatever is his will is my will. Dear Brothers and Sisters: I will write my testimony. Praise the Lord forever and ever! I am still saved, and there seems so much to do for the Lord. This life of warfare is nearly over with me, and if well done we will have rejoicing when the Master comes. Oh what a glorious prospect of the hereafter! I enjoy that freedom that the world cannot give or take away, for Jesus has made me free, so I am free indeed. My soul has come to Zion on the high and holy way. In me flows a constant river, and that river is peace. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit that we are the children of God, and if children, then heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ. Hallelujah! Let every one be careful that the light which be in them be not darkness, for to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. May the Lord ever give full strength to his children.

Yours saved in the one church,

Thaddeus Perry.

Dear Saints of God: I feel led of the Spirit to write my testimony. I am glad to say that I am sweetly saved in Jesus. The burden rolled off last March and I have been enjoying my life ever since, because the life that I now live, I live to the honor and glory of God. I am young and know but little as I ought to know. I desire an interest in all your prayers that I may be a useful member in the body of Christ. I want to be more and more like Christ. I am so glad that God ever sent the pure gospel where I could hear it. When I first heard the straight word preached I thought it was foolishhess, but thanks be to God, he showed me where I was and that I had no salvation, and I began to read the Bible to see what was the matter and I found I was following the blind and not God. May God bless you all, is my prayer. Your saved brother in the one body.

Dear Saints of God: I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony for the benefit of the Trumpet readers. I feel to thank God that he ever put it in the heart of Bro. Collins to answer our call, and come and labor with us for the salvation, of souls. And I praise God’s holy name for delivering me out of the Free Methodist sect. I did not join, but would if it had not been for my husband. He had heard of the true light and accepted it, and I can praise God alone for delivering us. I was saved on the 8th eve of January, the happiest eve of my life, for life has just begun with me. And again, I can praise his holy name for healing me of heart trouble that I had for 12 years, and also for the healing of my daughter. Dear ones, Jesus is my physician; praise his name. He also healed me of bodily ailments when Bro. Collins and Merritt were here, as they can testify. Husband is coming out and walking in all the light, and trusting in God for all things. Dear Saints of God: I feel led to write my testimony. This morning finds me saved from all sin. Oh praise the Lord, for the sweet joy and peace that I have in my soul. I do praise Him that he gave me a heart to receive and accept the true light, and I can say that I am completely dead to the world but alive to God. I was a member of the M. E. sect, and was a member there till last November, when the Lord sent Bro. Riggle here and he preached the word in purity and with power. I had sought sanctification while in the U. B. sect, but was not clear in my soul, and after Bro. Riggle had preached a few sermons I saw that I was not completely given up to God, and then I obeyed the word of God and threw away my sect name, that I had been holding to. Praise the Lord, this morning I am free in Christ. I do praise the Lord for the onward move his people are making. There are so many souls hungering for the real true light of God’s word. Oh may the Lord of the harvest send more laborers in his vineyard, for truly the harvest is great but the laborers are few. Your sister in Christ,

Dear Little Ones in Christ Jesus: I feel it to be to the glory of God to testify to the great and wonderful works the Lord has truly done for me. To day I am praising God for salvation that saves me from all sin. The scripture tells us that everthing works together for good to those that love the Lord, and I find it so. The dear Lord has wonderfully healed me several times, for which I give Him all the glory. Praise his holy name! I am rejoicing in salvation full and free. I did not know the people on earth could be as happy as I am with God’s love reigning supreme in my soul. Praise his holy name! I pray God that he may sink me deeper down in his ways and keep me hid away with Christ in God, that I may know nothing but Christ and him crucified. I also find it our duty as Christians to do much preaching in our daily walk, such as being very quiet, and humble and sober, just and holy, as an example in all we say and do. We must let our light shine that the world may see our good works and know that it means something to be a child of God. I praise his holy name forever for calling me out of sin and darkness into this glorious evening light. It has freed me from bands of sectism, and what the Son makes free is free in deed. I praise God for such salvation that keeps us saved to the uttermost. The Lord has wonderfully blessed me since I left the sect. Oh if the dear ones in the bondage of sectism would only see the light, and step out on God’s promises, how wonderfully the Lord would bless them. “The multitude of them that believed were of one heart and soul.” Take it home to your heart; how can you be of one heart in the sect, differing with one another? God says we are to know that we are his disciples. “By this shall all men know ye are my disciples, if ye have love one for another.” John 13:35. Dear ones in the sect, do you have that love one for another? be ye not unequally yoked with unbelievers. What fellowship lath righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness? Wherefore come out from among them and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing, and I will receive you and be a father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. 2 Cor 6:14-18. Praise the Lord! I am glad I was willing to come out and take the strait and narrow way that leads to life everlasting. We are to have no other God before Him. I can truly say, “I have found it Lord in thee, an everlasting store of comfort, joy and bliss to me.” Pray for me that I may be kept low down at his feet, allways learning more of the Lord and ready to answer any call he has for me in this world. Your sister saved and sanctified,

Lydia B. Walker.

To ALL THE DEAR SAINTS OF GOD, Greeting in Jesus name: My soul is so full of the burning love of Jesus that I can but tell of his wonderful goodness to me. Two years ago the Lord saved me from my sins and gave me sweet peace and joy in my soul. Oh how wonderfully he has kept me and led me ever since. Truly the Lord’s doings are marvelous in our eyes; then let us praise and exalt his name together. Praise ye the Lord! I have been working for Jesus over a year, and I do enjoy the service of the Master. I am just willing to spend and be spent for the gospel of Christ, willing to endure all things for His dear name’s sake. I do realize that God has laid his hand upon me to work for him. In talking with the Lord about it one day this summer, the Lord said he had a greater field of labor and more responsibilities, and I said, Oh God qualify me, and He showed me that it would come through suffering and self- denial, and I said. Amen Lord, I am willing and ready for any thing. Well it came in a way rather unexpected, but I just said, Oh Lord help me to get all benefit possible out of this, and you get all the glory you can. How wonderfully God took me through and brought me out more than conqueror, and my soul was wonderfully strengthened and benefited by it. I know I am making great advancement in God; my soul is daily increasing. “Of the increase of His government and peace there shall be no end.” — Isa. 9:7. So there is no end to the increase of His peace. How blessed it is, we can go right on increasing throughout all time and eternity, ever growing and advanicng in all the glorious gifts and graces of the Spirit. There is a great field of advancement for us all, and the more we deny ourselves for His sake, the more our souls will advance and grow. I do know that God has severed every strap and band, cleansed, made me free, and separated me unto Himself for his own use, and I give Him all the glory and praise.

My soul is cleansed from every stain
Of sin, and guilt, and woe;
Tis Jesus thro’ his precious blood,
Has made me pure as snow.

Since camp meeting the Lord has lead me to stay at the Childrens’ Home, to assist in training the little ones during the absence of Bro. Michels. I do know that this work is of God and my soul has been greatly stirred and exercised over some things. Now dear ones I would just say a few words to those who have abundance of this world’s goods. One thing we have observed in the children of God is that those who are willing to sacrifice a little of their comfort for the sake of Jesus and perishing souls are always moving forward and learning lessons of faith and trust, while those who withhold from God, soon become dwarfed in their experience and their souls are lean and ofttimes God has to take away their property to make them understand that it all belongs to Him. David understood this when he expressed himself thus; “But who am. I and what is my people that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort, for all things come of thee and of thine own have we given thee. For we are strangers before thee and sojourners, as were all our fathers; our days on the earth is as a shadow and there is none abiding. Oh Lord our God, all this store that we have prepared to build thee an house for thy holy name cometh of thine hand, and is all thine own.” — 1 Chron. 29:14-16. Our life is short and after we have done all, we are only unprofitable servants having only done our duty. Then let us be up and doing, alive unto God with his cause at heart and do all we can for perishing souls. I for one will go through with Jesus and will gladly suffer reproach and shame for his dear names sake. Oh let us be humble faithful and true to him that we may be found of him in peace not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that we may be holy and without blemish. Pray for me dear saints that God may keep me humble and use me to the greatest glory of his name at any cost. Amen. Your sister saved to the uttermost,

Nora Siens.

Our beloved sister, Mrs. Zula Holmes, departed this life June 28, 1894; aged 31 years. She leaves a loving husband, one child, a dead sister’s three small children, besides her aged parents and four brothers to mourn her departure. She was a devoted Christian and had been since her conversion, three years ago at Centennial, when Bro. W. H. Defore held meeting at that place. She was a victim of consumption, and the last thirteen months of her life she could only speak in a whisper. The morning she died, she talked to all her dear ones, and told them she was ready to go, and for them not to weep. She was laid to rest in the country grave-yard, west of Centennial school house. Died in Charlevoix Co., Mich., near East Jordan, June 23, 1894, aged 69 years, 9 months, and 7 days, sister Mary Dahn, wife of Bro. Andrew Dahn. Sister Dahn was born in Germany, from whence she removed to the state of New York in 1858, where she lived until eleven years ago, she came to Charlevoix Co. with her husband. She was a member of the Luthernian sect for many years until she heard the evening light and the angel’s cry “come out my people,” which call she promptly obeyed, and she died in the triumphs of a living faith, being willing and anxious to go home and be with Jesus. We placed her remains in the East Jordan Cemetery June 26th, after which the word was presented to the people in the saint’s house of worship in the village where a large circle of sorrowing friends had assembled. Sister Dahn leaves a husband, four children and several grand children to mourn their loss. God bless and save them before the call is past. Also may God’s blessing rest upon Bro. Dahn and keep him faithful a few more days, until he shall be summoned to go home. Amen.

thing else to draw us away from God. He has said, My grace is sufficient, therefore there is no excuse if we do not enter into that beautiful rest.

These are only a few of the many excuses that are brought up by the evil one to draw God’s children away from Him. Another excuse a great many times is, “I have not clothes good enough to wear to meeting; my shoes or boots are not whole; we cannot dress as nicely as some of our brothers or sisters.” If our clothes are whole and clean, even if they are patched, we are plenty good enough to go to meeting; and if we have boots or shoes or clothing good enough to go into town, we have clothes good enough to go to meeting. While we look at the outward apparel, let us look at our hearts and see if they are clean and whole in the sight of God.

May our dear Father help his children to be so firmly established upon his promises, so rooted and grounded in love, that they will not listen to the cunning words of the devil when he forms excuses to bind God’s children under his element. It means a great deal to get where we can ask God for help, and still more to be where we will be willing to accept the help which we ask of him. Many times we ask God to lead us by his holy Spirit, to direct us, to make known his will, and then when he answers prayer we will shrink from duty with the excuse, The cross was too heavy to bear. Certainly there are reasonable excuses that cannot be avoided to keep us away from the house of God at times, but we do not want to rely too much upon such excuses and let the devil lead us and make us think they are all reasonable. May God bless these few remarks to his honor and glory, and help all of his dear children to look well unto Him. Amen.

(Continued from last issue.)

THE HOLY SPIRIT OF PROMISE.

Promised through the Prophets. For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground. I will pour my Spirit upon thy seed and my blessings upon thine offspring: and they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses. One shall say, I am the Lord’s; and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob; and another shall subscribe with his hand unto the Lord, and surname himself by the name of Israel. — Isa. 44:3-5. Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness and from all your idols will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you; and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments and do them. — Ezek. 36:25-27. And it shall come to pass afterwards, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: and also upon the servants, and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. — Joel 2:28, 29.

Promised through Christ. And behold I send the promise of my Father upon you; but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem until ye be endued with power from on high. — Luke 24:49. But whosoever shall drink of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. — Jno. 4:14. But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive; for the Holy Ghost was not yet given, because that Jesus was not yet glorified. — Jno. 7:39. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him; but ye know him, for he dwelleth with you and shall be in you. — Jno. 14:16, 17. But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me. — Jno. 15:26. Nevertheless I tell you the truth, it is expedient for you that I go away, for if I go not away the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth is come, he will guide you into all truth; for he shall not speak of himself, but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak, and he will show you things to come. — Jno. 16:7, 13.

To whom Promised. Then Peter said unto them, Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you and to your children, and all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. — Acts 2:38, 39. And we are his witnesses of these things, and so is also the Holy Ghost whom God hath given to them that obey him. — Acts 5:32. That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ, that ye might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. — Gal. 3:14.

Promise Fulfilled. And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord, in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting: and there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. — Acts 2:1-4.

Testified to. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel: and it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. — Acts 2:16-18. Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. — Acts 2:33.

This is the Witness. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father and ye in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me, and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. — Jno. 14:20, 21. And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him and he in him; and hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us. — 1 Jno. 3:24. Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. — 1 Jno. 4:13.

TYPES OF CONSECRATION AND THE WITNESS.

We find the experience of a perfect consecration beautifully typified in the dedication of the tabernacle, and also the temple. When the dedication was complete, for Moses had made every thing according to the pattern showed him on the mount, God sent the manifest witness of his approval upon the work. This pillar of cloud and fire is the type of the Holy Spirit. Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. — Ex. 40:34, 35.

At the dedication of the temple we find a similar experience. In 1 Kings 8:5 we find an example of the perfect sacrifice. And king Solomon and all the congregation of Israel that were assembled unto him, were with him before the ark, sacrificing sheep and oxen that could not be told nor numbered for multitude. This same event of the dedication of the temple described in 2 Chron. 5:12-14 typifies the apostolic experience of Pentecost. Compare the above reference with Acts 2:1-4. In both cases we find the perfect consecration and the glorious witness of God’s approval. In both cases we find the glory of the Lord descended upon them. In the former, the house or temple was filled with a cloud and glory; in the latter, the individual temples were all filled with the Holy Spirit. In the former, the glory of God was the continual witness, which is the type of the abiding Comforter who is promised to dwell within us, the consecrated temples of God. In 2 Chron. 7:1-3, where the perfect sacrifice had been made, the fire came down from heaven and consumed the offerings; so we find in this glorious antitype at Pentecost the holy fire descended upon each of them, which by every sanctified soul is plainly understood. When the perfect consecration has been made, God will send the witness. In these cases referred to, the dedication was complete. They were all waiting in prayer and supplication. The witness came. So it will ever be to all, who, in like manner, meet the full conditions for sanctification. God has completed the full provisions of the covenant on his part. When we fully meet the conditions of this covenant on our part, he affixes his heavenly seal upon us, the Holy Spirit of promise. The question is frequently asked,

HOW MAY WE KNOW WE ARE SANCTIFIED?

This may be answered by asking two questions.

1st, Do you know your consecration is complete?

2d, Do you know God’s promises are true? If you can say yes with the positive certainty that you know what it means, you know beyond the shadow of a doubt that you are sanctified. Another question frequenty is asked.

HOW MAY WE KEEP SANCTIFIED?

As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him. Rooted and built up in him and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world and not after Christ. For in him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power, — Col, 2:6-10. Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage, — Gal. 5:1.

OBJECTIONS ANSWERED.

“Jesus was not sanctified until his death, therefore we cannot be.” Let us turn to the word of God and see. And for their sakes I sanctify myself that they also might be sanctified through the truth. — Jno. 17:19. For it became him for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through suffering. — Heb. 2:10. And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him. — Heb. 5:9.

The terms “sanctify” and “perfect” used here with reference to Jesus do not imply holiness or purity. He was holy and pure before his death, but was not a perfect Savior of the world until the sacrifice of his own blood was made. In this respect he sanctified himself, set himself apart as the sacrifice for sin, which he had not done until his death on the cross. In this respect he became perfect through suffering, a perfect Savior and sacrifice. Wherefore Jesus also that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate. — Heb. 13:12.

“We cannot be without sin in this life, for the word says, If we say that we have no sin we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. — 1 Jno. 1:8.” Let us read the 7th verse, also the 9th in connection with the 8th, and we plainly see by the three verses connected that we can be cleansed from all sin and unrighteousness.

We cannot obtain it until just before death.” Turn again to the word of God. That he would grant unto us that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life. — Luke 1:74, 75. For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that denying ungodliness and worldly lusts we should live soberly, righteously and godly in this present world. — Tit. 2:11, 12. Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment, because as he is, so are we in this world. — 1 Jno. 4:17.

We must grow into it and therefore reach it gradually.” This is contrary to God’s plan. We cannot grow into grace, but are commanded to grow in grace. But grow in [not into] grace and the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. — 2 Pet. 3:18. As no sinner can grow into justification, so no believer can grow into sanctification. It requires the divine operation of God’s power to induct us into each. The sinner may do much, and must do so in forsaking his sins, but he cannot grow into peace with God. The believer can do much to cleanse himself, by laying aside all things and presenting himself a living sacrifice, but he cannot grow into purity.

“We get it all at justification.” This is a mistake. The only conditions for justification are repentance and faith, while the conditions for sanctification are consecration and faith. No sinner can make the consecration requisite to sanctification. He cannot comprehend it. As well try to teach algebra or geometry to the little child that is only beginning at school, as to teach consecration to a sinner. The penitent sinner knows his guilty and lost condition; he comes to God and receives pardon through faith in Jesus. All consciousness of guilt and outward transgressions is gone. He now knows he is a child of God. In this condition he is now able to obtain knowledge of a perfect consecration, which, with an understanding of his inward depraved nature he can meet the full conditions for sanctification.

“Some claim it who prove to be hypocrites.” True, The same may be said of some who claim to be justified. This does not disprove the reality of either experience.

“We cannot be free from evil thoughts.” To the pure heart and mind no evil thought is entertained. It no sooner presents itself than it is at once captivated. Casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. — 2 Cor. 10:5.

“We cannot keep from making mistakes.” True, the sanctified may make mistakes, but they do not commit sin. An error in judgment is not necessarily a sin. Committing sin is defined by the apostle James, as follows: Then when lust hath conceived it bringeth forth sin. — Jas. 1:15. The sanctified person cannot commit sin until some lust has conceived in his heart. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts. adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile the man. — Mark 7:21-23.

“Paul said there was sin dwelling in him.” This expression we find in Rom. 7:17. The apostle was not describing his sanctified condition when writing this chapter, but expresses his condition when he was in the flesh or carnal state. For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sin which were by the law did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. Verse 4. And in Rom. 8: 8 says, So then they that are in the flesh (or carnal state) cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you, Verse 9. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death, Verse 2.

Paul said there were none righteous, no not one” Rom. 3:10. This does not describe the sanctified, but refers to the wicked condition of the world during the days of David, under the law.

Solomon said there is not a just man on earth that doeth good and sinneth not.’’ Eccl. 7:21. This also was spoken of the condition of the people under the law, which of course was true, but it does not describe the sanctified experience. The law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God. — Heb. 7:19.

“Paul said he keeps wider his body and brings it into subjection. 1 Cor. 9:25-27. Therefore it must have been sinful.” No, he had no reference to a sinful body, but was teaching temperance in all things. In sanctification the depraved or sinful nature is destroyed, therefore it does not need to be kept under, for all sin is kept out; but the created nature (which is human) with all its created appetites and propensities, is kept in subjection. Sanctification does not destroy our human nature, but brings it into perfect and easy control.

Now the God of peace that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. — Heb. 13:20, 21.

THY TESTIMONIES ARE WONDERFUL.

St. James, Mo.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony. This morning finds me saved and enjoying the Savior’s love. It makes my heart ache when I look back on the world of to day. who claim to be Christians and by their works they show that they are not. O how I do praise the Lord that he ever brought me out of darkness into his glorious light, and that I can enjoy his love. I can say for the last eleven years I have been enjoying the blessing of entire sanctification. Dear reader, how is it with your soul? Are you yoked up with unbelievers? Are you yoked up in lodges with every evil class of people under heaven? If so, God says come out and be ye separate, and touch not the unclean thing, and I will receive you, saith the Lord Almighty. Remember God’s word is true and shall judge you in the last day. Some professors of religion of today may think that they can belong to lodges and such abominable things as God’s word forbids, and try to palm off that they can not see any harm in it, and think that God will excuse them at the judgment bar on account of ignorance. Nothing short of true salvation will ever save any one; then let me admonish you not to indulge in things that God’s word forbids and try to palm it off by saying you can not see any harm in it, when you show by your own actions that you are condemned. I will say upon the authority of God’s word that when you get true salvation, and enjoy the blessings of entire sanctification, it will enable you to throw off all worldly creeds, yokes, lodges, and put on the whole armor of God who is able to save your soul; instead of being a stumbling block in the way of sinners, you will be a light to the world. Pray for me brothers and sisters, that I may ever stand true to God. Your brother in Christ, saved and sanctified,

T. A. Miles.

Dear Saints of God: My soul rejoices within me this day, on account of the wonderful works the Father hath wrought in me by the application of the shed blood of our blessed Redeemer. Not quite two years ago I stepped into the pool whilst being stirred by dear Bro’s Clayton and Henry at Bro. Kennedy’s, Crowland, Ont., although I had a terrible struggle to get rid of the straps and bands the devil had riveted on me. But when I made a full surrender to our God, the bands were broken and the straps loosed, and my soul fully escaped from behind the prison bars of sin and death. Shortly after, at Pa. camp meeting the mighty sanctifying element was applied, which made me every whit whole, and meet for the Master’s use. And glory be to God forever, he then loosed my tongue and filled my mouth and soul with praises, and he has been using me ever since to preach his perfect gospel. I am glad that I entered into the fountain which was opened in the house of David for all sin and uncleanness. I have found a wonderful storehouse, abundance of good things, a continual feast, yea, forevermore, if we are faithful. Brethren, I do rejoice that I am privileged to live and partake of this glorious light of a perfect gospel. God help us to hold up this mighty banner of holiness to a dying world, with a holy zeal; and let each and every one of the children of God keep up a mighty traffic over the bridge which spans the terrible gulf of sin, which intervenes God and man. During the past centuries man has invented and builded many towers to span the gulf, but failed; but our God has spanned it perfectly through his dear Son, thereby affording us perfect safety. God help the lost in sin and sectism to hasten their steps to the perfect way, the straight way, and the one way, is my prayer.

Dear saints of God, I desire to tell you that our God has added a goodly number to his church in Canada, and we had a glorious day of feasting June 10, at dear Bro. Church’s, on the shore of old lake Ontario. Six dear souls were buried in baptism and were made to shout and praise God. God does bless those who obey the laws and ordinances of his perfect house, whose are we. We desire the prayers of all the saints of God that many souls will be saved at our coming camp meeting. Your saved and sanctified brother,

S. E. Birdsall.
