THE TRAIN OF MORTAL LIFE.

__________

In memory of Bro. Alpheus E. Clark, of Kalamazoo, Mich,, who was killed Sept. 7, 1895, beneath the wheels of a freight car. Read upon his funeral occasion.

The wheels of time run on beneath
The car of human freight,
And all on board are but a breath

From their eternal fate.

On either side the train of life,
Pale marbles thickly rise:
Death casts a shadow o’er the land;
Man comes forth here and dies.

Hark! Day by day the tolling bells
In silence hold our breath:
This world is but a burial place,
This life the train of death.

And though his soul had been depressed,
His sheild of death was low,
The love of truth enshrined his breast,
And hope left not his brow.

And so we leave dear Brother Clark
On Mercy’s loving breast,
And hope that He who knew his heart,
Will crown him with the bless’d.

One thing at least we are assured, —
Our brother’s sudden call.
Was in the providence of Him
Who sees the sparrow fall.

And though we may not understand
The counsel of His will,
His perfect wisdom sees the end,
And doeth all things well.

Then comfort ye dear Sister Clark:
Behold the hand of love
Who gave, has taken him away,
To fix your hope above.

How swift our flight from shore to shore!
And all along we see
Pale corpse of them who passed before,
Into eternity.

And as we look upon their clay,
In solemn tones we bear
The voice of holy wisdom say,
“Your end is also near.”

And yet, behold the multitude!
How heedless on they fly!
To-day they think the journey long,
To-morrow, lo! they die.

And here we meet around the form
Of one we’ve known and loved,
Who lately made his final run,
The trip that fatal proved.

The cruel wheels of death rolled on
Across the mystic line;
And so his spirit passed beyond
The narrow bounds of time.

God bless you and the little ones,
In sorrow give you peace:
His arm support your widowhood.
His all sufficient grace.

To you, dear friends of the deceased,
Who mourn his sudden death,
Be this a call to seek His face,
Who gives you life and breath.

To all assembled here to-day,
See how the train of time
Is swiftly bearing us away:
This day alone is thine.

Lo! one by one we pass beyond
The cloud that intervenes
Between this vale of mortal tears
And future awful scenes.

Conte then, and walk in Heaven’s love,
Obey the holy Word;
So time will bear your souls above
To Heaven’s sweet reward.

In that bright world of bliss divine,
No news of death will come:
No sickness, sorrow, grief or pain.

Disturb thy peaceful home.

__________

Salvation means Deliverance.

__________

THE entrance of sin into our world has brought in its train indescribable wretchedness. Guilt and remorse sting the conscience and fill the soul with shame. Sinful habits form the links of an iron chain which binds the life in utter despair — a chain of bondage which defies all human strength. Burning lusts are set on fire from hell, all clamoring for unholy indulgence, the gratification of which is only followed by greater misery. Restless and unnatural desires deprive the soul of peace, and the half-awakened fears of death and judgment hang dark and gloomy over the life. Hope dies, and with it manhood and womanhood give up their struggle and surrender the life to dark melancholy or open shame. Reader, SALVATION MEANS DELIVERANCE from all these elements of woe and misery. And should even this picture fall short of the deep shades of your case, SALVATION yet means complete deliverance for you. Actual deliverance from the strongest chains of habit, the lowest depths of sin, the deepest hell of intemperance and debauchery; deliverance from darkness into light, from the power of Satan unto God; from the woes of a guilty conscience into peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ; from remorse into the joys of pardon; from the thralldom of sin into the glorious liberty of the sons of God. O wonderful! wonderful deliverance by the almighty arm of Him whose name is Wonderful!

And when all this blessedness is reached by the divine miracle of regeneration, if the new-born soul continues to “desire the sincere milk of the Word, and grow thereby,” he will soon come to the privilege of another great and glorious epoch in divine grace, — the entire sanctification of his nature, the utter destruction of all inward bent to evil, and the restoration of the “divine nature,” 2 Pet. 1:4; perfect deliverance from the “body of sin” into the “image of God” and his perfected love.

Beloved, this is not an overdrawn picture, nor a tale of human fancy; nay, it is the very substance of the sure word of God. “For he hath made him to be sin for us; who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” — 2 Cor. 5:21.

“Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.” – Heb. 7:25.

“This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.” — 1 Tim. 1:15.

And “where sin abounded grace did much more abound.” Rom. 5:20. Here saving grace is placed over against all sin. And even in hearts and lives where “sin abounded,” grace, the saving mercy of God, much more abounds. Though your sins tower up like dark mountains unto heaven, grace towers far above. Though they be deep as hell, the grace of God with omnipotent arm reaches unto you. Though great wickedness spreads over all your past life, grace superabounds to save you. “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” Isa. 1:18.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9. “And the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” 1 John 1:7. To meet your wants as a sinner, God has sent to you A SAVIOR, AND A GREAT ONE.” Isa. 19:20. Though your soul is cursed by “your manifold transgressions, and your MIGHTY SINS,” Amos 5:12, you may “make your SUPPLICATION TO THE ALMIGHTY.” Job 8:5. Though your lusts and wickedness rise like mighty billows and threaten to sweep you quickly down to hell, “the Lord on high is MIGHTIER THAN THE NOISE OF MANY WATERS, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea.” Psa. 93:4.

“And being made perfect he became the author of eternal salvation to all them that obey him.” — Heb. 3:9.

“For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” — Heb. 9:13, 14.

Reader, be assured that the writer is one, and he is personally acquainted with thousands of others, who, though our case has been as dark and hopeless as yours, have, by the grace of God come to a happy realization of those precious scriptures. Therefore FULL SALVATION is not only true in the Word, but also in fact. And if you are willing and obedient, will prove true in your case.

SALVATION MAKES US FREE FROM SIN.

“For he that is dead is free from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ we believe we shall also live with him.” — Rom. 6:7, 8.

“For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” — Rom. 6:10, 11.

“Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.” — Ver. 18.

“He that is dead is free from sin.” And this freedom is attained now in this life. Hence immediately follow the words, “Now if we be dead with him,” etc. And just as Christ lives unto God, a holy life, likewise, in the same manner we should “reckon ourselves dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Not dead to sin prospectively or only professedly, but DEAD INDEED UNTO SIN. Actually dead and oblivious to sin. Having no more part in the sins of this world than if literally dead and buried. What can more strongly and more positively express absolute freedom from sin than the declaration that we are dead indeed to sin? One might abstain from the commission of sin and not yet be really dead to it. But when dead indeed to anything, that must be the end of it. It means that we have no more to do with sin than the dead who lie in the cemetery have to do with the business of this world. As natural death puts an end to all activities here on earth, so complete salvation in Jesus is the terminis of all humun actions of a sinful character.

“But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.” — Rom. 6:22.

Deep Water.

_____

“I SUPPOSE you know where all the rocks are,” said the boy to the pilot, as he watched him at the vessel’s wheel.

“No,” was the answer, “but I know where the deep water is.”

One man urged as a proof of his fitness to navigate a certain water that he had had his craft on every rock in the stream.

There are many who seem to think that no one can preach righteousness so well as one who has wallowed in sin; that no one can talk temperance like who has often been drunk; and that a course in vice and sin and folly is almost essential as a preparation for service in the cause of God.

They are mistaken. Many who try the paths of sin never return to righteousness. Others are moral, mental, and physical wrecks; and while a few do excellent and permanent work for God, many relapse again and again, and some never recover themselves. One man of this description, possessed of wonderful powers of speech and song, whose words and tunes were sung by hundreds of thousands, died at last a drunken tramp in a western jail.

Experience is not the only teacher. A man may describe a shipwreck without going down in the ship; and many a studious Christian who never has tasted strong drink can portray its evils more fully, forcibly, and accurately than most men who have been through all the horrors of drunkenness, thirst and delirium.

A Moses, the child of believing parents; a Joseph, maintaining his integrity in the midst of temptation; a Samuel, consecrated to God in his infancy; a David, unspoiled amid the sheep-folds of Bethlehem; a Jeremiah, called of God to speak his word in early youth; a Paul, who lived in all good conscience toward God from childhood up; a Timothy, who from a child had known the Holy Scriptures; a Luther, religiously trained from his youth; a Wesley, brought up by godly parents, and schooled in morality and religion; and a multitude of others, cradled in poverty, inured to toil, and kept too busy to plunge into the mad whirlpools of sin and folly, and trained to revolt from the filth and uncleanness in which the dissolute love to wallow, — these are the men who have made their mark in the history of humanity, and have scattered far and wide the seed of an immortal harvest.

It is true that some dissolute men have been reclaimed and restored — they often being men who had broken away from the restraints of godly training and good principles, which now at last reassert their power and bring back the wandering soul. It is also true where such an one enters upon the work of saving others, he may be a power for good; and may through partiality or curiosity be more petted, admired and honored than a hundred who for years and years have practiced what he has only just begun to preach. But it is also true that the great mass of gospel work done for a lost world is not done by “reformed men,” by “rescued women,” by those who have sounded the depths of sin, and have shattered their barks on the rocks of intemperance and vice; but rather by persons who have been brought up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, and whose correct training and wholesome lives have fitted them to adorn the doctrine of God our Savior, and to be patterns to believers in faith and purity.

Steer for deep water. Never mind so much about the rocks and shoals, but STUDY THE CHANNEL and keep in it, and push out in the great deep. No man runs on the rocks when he keeps his ship off from soundings.

Do not dally with sin, or skirt along the coast-line of temptation; launch out into the deep. Cut the shore-line, get as far away from sin and temptation as possible. “LOOK NOT on the wine.” Do not trifle with temptation in any form. Keep clear of bad company; drive away bad thoughts. Do not think you must know all the evil there is. Turn away your eyes from beholding vanity, steer straight for the eternal haven. So shall an abundant entrance be ministered unto you into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Dear Saints, I am praising God every day and hour for salvation and the healing of my body. Six weeks ago the Lord raised me from my bed of affliction, spoke peace to my soul; now I am well, better than I have been for years. I give God the praise. And the sweet communion I have with him is unspeakable and full of glory. I have the sweet abiding peace in my soul that the world cannot give, neither can it takeaway. Glory to Jesus! Dear Saints: Greeting: I feel led of the Lord this morning to offer my testimony for him who suffered without the gate, to save a rebel like me. Praise his holy name, that the Spirit itself beareth witness that I am saved just now from all sin, including the three bad habits, whiskey, tobacco and coffee, and these three were one with myself. But I thank God through Jesus Christ that he has cleansed me of every thing pertaining to the world, even self, and am sanctified to do his whole will. Praise the Lord! Amen. Dear Saints: I want to testify to the keeping power of God. We are kept from sin, for his seed remaineth in us. We praise him for complete victory. It has been four years since I received this Comforter. Oh how I praise the Lord for it all! He has healed this body, which is his. The Spirit is within; temptations come on the outside. The joy is not so great at all times, but the seed remaineth all the time. The just shall live by faith. Sometimes my cup runneth over. Some people think I have gone too far. Oh how I do praise God for such a salvation! Some think that sanctification is not for all; the Word says he is no respecter of persons.

Dear Editor: I was given three of your papers many years ago by a friend. I read and re read them until they are yellow and worn with age. It is the best paper I have found yet, and it impressed me you have the practical religion I have been looking for so long. There are none of your people here that I am aware of. Wish I might be blessed to meet with you some time. Oh that there might be a position open for me to work in your field! I have long looked for such a one. May our God richly bless and spare you many years to herald the blessed tidings that our Lord is abundantly “able to save to the uttermost,” and to heal both soul and body. Your saved sister,

But last week we gave the association of Rome with her daughters in the town of Ayer, and here we have the same thing moving on in other parts. The following is taken from the PEOPLE’S PARTY paper, Atlanta, Ga., June 28, 1895.

“We are hastening to new things in this country — new things in Church and in State, in politics and in business.

A great league has been formed to bring about unity between the Catholic Church and the Protestants. Articles of agreement were drawn up at the Lambeth Conference and a circular letter seeking general church unity has been signed by representative Congregationalists, Episcopalians and Presbyterians.

According to the word of God we may look for just such moves in one locality after another, which will no doubt ere very long, lead to a call for a convention for the purpose of organizing a joint association of Romanism and Protestantism throughout the United States.

We believe this will be a time of spiritual advancement, and a deeper settling down upon the Word for a forward move on the line of divine healing, and general salvation work, and a better qualification for the work of rescueing souls. Everybody is invited to attend. If possible bring enough bedding to keep you comfortable. Meals and lodging can be procured on the grounds. Come praying. HEALED OF WHITE-SWELLING.

_____

Dear Saints: I wish to inform you all that our little daughter Birdie Ruth was healed of white-swelling, by prayer and faith in Jesus, also, obeying Jas. 5:14. The bone was enlarged to twice its natural size, when I wrote to Bro. Byrum. It is now (almost) back to its natural size. This was indeed a wonderful case of healing. What faith it gives us! Oh what love for God, and zeal for his cause! What trust, yea, what deep assurance, arid reliance in his promises! We know that his word is true. To him be the praise! Was it ever known that an earthly physician has been able to do such works? But there is a physician in Israel to-day, that heals ALL our diseases. It was indeed marvelous. The work is done, and we give God the praise, thanking him for the lesson taught us. Amen. Your brother in Him,

J. G. Neff,

Elk Dale, Mo.

__________

BE WISE.

_____

Dear Brethren: I feel it would be wise to say, “Be wise” in handling a subject in which delicate language has to be used which is not congenial to the ears of a mixed multitude. Perhaps you know just what I mean. I have seen meetings very much injured by brethren not using discretion in presenting certain subjects. Now we know these subjects are very necessary to be taught; but let us be wise to know when, where, how and to whom we should teach them. All ears are not saints’ ears. Some may call it mock modesty if one gets disgusted by hearing such things from the pulpit as we have heard; but it is not. Surely it must be very embarrassing for a young lady and gentleman accompanying each other to meeting and sitting side by side (if they are well disposed), to hear such language as we have heard in the past. Now brethren, we say to you in the name of Jesus, Be wise. Do not get so vehement in your soul on such subjects (or any other for that matter) as to run wild. Again, be wise in another direction. When you hear a grand subject handled from the pulpit by one to whom God has given much wisdom, be wise enough to know that God has placed the members in the body as he sees fit, and has not placed YOU there to undertake to ape somebody else. If God has called any of us to handle delicate subjects, he surely will help us to be wise enough to do it right, and no harm will come from it. My advice in presenting such subjects, and making a sermon exclusively on it, would be to separate the congregation, males and females by themselves. Again I say brethren, let us be wise and keep in the bounds of propriety. “Let everything be done decently and in order.” The above subjects alluded to are secret vices, and intemperance in lawful things. Yours in Christ,

A. B. Palmer.

A NOVEL DECEPTION.

_____

These are truly perilous times — an age of deception. There seems to be a counterfeit to every thing that is genuine, and more especially to every thing that is good. God is moving his people on the New Testament line to the unity of the Spirit. Eph. 4:3. “Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.” Ver. 13.

There is in Chicago a novel imitation of this advance move, by what is known as the Jerusalem people. Some of them have tarried at Jerusalem, and have many pleasing stories to tell about the city, etc. But it was literal and not the heavenly Jerusalem. While they are trying to live like the saints at Jerusalem, and have all things common, it is only a novel imitation. Their unity is so great that they have left other families and sects and now live as one family in the same house, and eat at the same table, etc. But are so destitute of the Spirit and unity of the Bible that they are forming one of their own; but are not ready to publish it yet, lest they would have to amend or change it, etc. They claim a standard of unity so far ahead of the apostolic standard that they are profiting by the mistakes of the inspired apostles; of course, correcting them by their novel standard. If this gentle lamb(?) (kid) were grown it would be a full- fledged sect, with a real party or sect spirit. I therefore in the light of God’s word and Spirit admonish all the dear ones to be aware of all imitations; buy the truth and sell it not.

And to the Jerusalem people, I would say in the love and Spirit of Christ, that if you are honest, then you are honestly deceived, and I admonish you in the name of Jesus to repent and get the unity and Spirit of Christ. Although your deception may be as charming and hard to break off as the reading of a novel, yet it is still a novel deception. Yours in the unity of the Spirit, and faith of the Bible. Praise the Lord! Amen.

J. Cole.

OLE CONVERSATION.

_____

LIGHTNESS.

“But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation.” — 1 Pet. 1:15. In this scripture conversation has reference to our whole conduct or manner of life; but we wish to speak of our conversation as we now use the word; viz., speaking.

Our land to-day is cursed with corrupt communication. It has become so universal that it is not looked upon as evil. The jester and punster find a place in all classes of society. We hear them in the drunken rabble, find them in the pales of Babylon, and may read their jokes and witticisms in nearly every worldly newspaper.

Now dear children of God, this is of the devil, so reject it in the name of the Lord. Did you ever read of Jesus going around joking or telling of some funny circumstance to make the people laugh? We never hear of lim offering this kind of joy or taking it himself. From whence then the source? The bottomless pit!

“But,” says one, “God doesn’t want us to go around with a long sober face, having no amusement.” True, put let us have the true pleasure that cometh from God, righteousness and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

There are some who think it fanaticism, to reprove this lightness; but the Spirit of God prompts me to say that it is an abominable thing in God’s sight, and God’s people are realizing it more and more. Now on the same line as lightness and a part of it are

BY-WORDS AND SLANG,

for doubtless they belong to the same spirit. These are used by people in their sinful state, and become such a part of their language that the habit of using them is hard often, to be broken. Let us form habits of saying what we mean.

It was very painful to me to hear these words from certain dear ones: “I’ll sell the whole shooting match” (farm). “We will fly our kites” (do our best). “TO make a great fast at it” (do my best). “That is a dandy” (a nice one). Now the speaker of these phrases would not say, “I’ll; bet,” but is the latter any worse? There are hundreds of such expressions just as bad as those quoted, but carelessly used by children of God. The Lord wants us to say what we mean, that we may mean what we say.

Here are some phrases sometimes used in a way which strongly indicates a spirit of

IMPATIENCE.

“Oh dear!” “My sakes!” “Oh, my!” “My land!” “Goodness sakes!” “Forevermore!” These and other simiiar expressions can all be swept away by the grace of God and a sweet “Praise the Lord!” planted in the heart and mouth instead; for “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.”

There are people who may not use any of these idle words, yet by their looks, manners and tone of voice portray impatience and selfishness in the heart. The Psalmist says

“A SOFT ANSWER

turneth away wrath.” When an unsaved person has been doing something for you, a little word of gratitude will touch their heart, when a sharp word or none at all may stir up anger. Husbands, thank your wives; wives, your husbands; parents, your children; and children, your; parents, for the little favors received daily, and there will not be much wrangling in the family.

When one speaks in a rage of anger to us, let us make reply in a meek, gentle tone, and notice how the fit of anger will calm. “A soft answer turneth away wrath.” God’s Spirit is averse to a harsh, loud, boisterous tone of voice, but sweetly blends with soothing gentle tones. How often we hear a course, brutish voice attended with these vulgarisms: “Get out of my way, kids, or I’ll knock you down stairs.” “I‘ll shake you to pieces.” “I’ll skin you alive,” “Keep quiet or you’ll hear thunder.” I feel it my duty to quote these vulgarisms, as they have become so commonly used even in our reputable (?) schools, that those who have become victims of this awful habit may see and forsake these abominable things. The Holy Ghost in the heart will do it, for they all are the out-come of a carnal, impatient nature, or said in a manner to create daughter.

Brother, sister, are you talking before your fellow creatures as you will wish you had in eternity? Are the words of your mouth acceptable with the Lord? Remember,

WE ARE ON THE BRINK OF ETERNITY.

“Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness?” “Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.” 2 Pet. 3:11, 14.

It is our privilege to be rid of all these things mentioned that bind so many down. Dear soul, if any of the above points strike you, forever forsake them by God’s grace, and enjoy the freedom of God’s holy ones. The Word does not license us to fall below God in degree of purity; so to know how we should live as Christ lived, who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth, let this mind be in you, which also in Christ Jesus, who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God. Phil. 2:5, 6. Your brother redeemed and walking with God,

C. H. Dewey.

Clifton, Mo., Sept. 20.

Dear Saints of God: In Jesus name we can report victory. Ever since the camp meeting closed at Thayer the work has been going steadily on. The seed that was sown has begun to bear fruit. Sept. 5, we observed the ordinances of God’s house, beginning with baptism. I baptized five, and thirty participated in the other ordinances Sept. 15, six more followed the dear Lord in the liquid grave. That makes eleven in two weeks. There will be others to follow, Lord willing. Pray for us that the work may continue. Amen.

Yours in the unity of the faith, Your brother in Christ,

Dear Brethren: Aug. 1, we left home for the Brushy Prairie tabernacle meeting at the call of God through Bro. E. Ellis. We spent about two weeks there with fair results. The meeting was well attended and was very interesting. We had children’s meeting daily with good results; a number of the children were wonderfully saved during the meeting. We arrived on the Beaver Dam camp ground on the first day of the meeting. We enjoyed much of the presence of God during that meeting; it was a precious meeting to our souls, and many others. Precious souls were saved, and others sanctified. I think there were more people present on Lord’s day than at any previous meeting ever held there. From Beaver Dam we went to Burkett in company with Bro. Speck and company to hold a tabernacle meeting. We held two weeks with good results. A few souls were saved, and much prejudice driven out by the word of God. There is a good opening for the truth to take hold at that place. From Burkett to Palestine with the same company and tabernacle, where we remained four days and left the meeting still in progress by Bro. Speck, who I presume, will report the meeting at the close. Yours in the one body,

A. B. Palmer.

Dear Trumpet Readers: The Lord has wonderfully blessed us since we came to this place. We commenced meeting at the Pine Grove school house June 28, and continued eight weeks, with glorious results and victory for the Lord. Fifty-five were saved at this place, and many more are counting the cost. We had much opposition from the M. E’s. and Catholics and Lutherans. But God has enabled us to put to silence the gain- sayers. We went from there to Flower Creek school house, and held one week’s meeting, and twenty-one more were saved. Closed with good interest. We are now holding our meetings in the town hall, with good order and good interest. We have no house that is large enough to accommodate the people. We are not able to fill the calls for meeting as fast as they come. We trust the Lord will send some one to help fill the calls for the pure gospel. This is a new field. We had a precious ordinance meeting, Aug. 14 at the home of Bro. White, in which forty- seven saints took part. Some had been in the M. E. sect forty years and never obeyed the commands of the Lord. It was precious to see so many of one mind and heart. Thirty- nine have been buried with Christ in baptism. One F. W. Baptist preacher and wife accepted the truth and were baptized. Surely the Lord is among this people. The Lord is holding us up by his mighty power. Praise his name! Brethren, pray for us that we may be kept humble where God can use us. Amen.

Dear Saints: Our camp meeting is over, and I do praise God for the unity of the Spirit and faith in the camp of the saints. This was the

best meeting ever held in the South. We met with many of the dear ones whom we never saw before. We had three baptismal services, and twenty- two followed the Lord in the ordinance. Some were saved and sanctified in nearly every service during the ten days. Eleven preachers attended the meeting. We are having a mighty settling down for God in Miss. Oh beloved everywhere, let us be on the forward move for God. There are many people who think all they have to do is to claim holiness to get to heaven. May God help you to see, the evening light is living the whole word of God in all things. God bless all and fill you with his fullness. Amen. Your brother on the forward move,

Knox, Pa., Sept. 17.

Dear Trumpet Readers: We are glad to day to report victory on the Lord’s side. After enjoying a real feast to our souls at Emlenton camp meeting we came to a place about one and one-half miles east of Edinburg or Knox P. O. and held meeting twelve days in a fine grove well lighted with gas. This was a new place for the evening light, and the people (many of them) seemed hungry for the truth; and we found a few who were willing to walk in all the light of God. The devil raged considerably when the condition of sectism was shown by the straight word, but it resulted in drawing the line between God’s people and formal professors. Several renounced sectism and came out in the pure light of the Word. Dear Bro. Gilger has been with us a few nights, and has been used of the Lord in preaching the Word; but as his work necessitates his being at home most of the time, we feel it would be God’s will for some one to come and labor with us who could be in the work all the time, as we are only young in the work. The Lord’s will be done. May the Lord bless those who so kindly cared for us while holding this meeting. From here we expect to go to Pittsville to hold meeting in the saints’ meeting house; meeting to begin the 21st. Pray much for us and the work in these parts. Address us at Pittsville, Pa. Yours saved in Jesus,

A. T. Rowe and Co.

Dear Saints: Since the Grand Junction camp meeting we have been engaged in the work in Wisconsin, which is moving for God. First we had meeting at Eidsvold which resulted in bringing a few out in the evening light. Our camp at Clinton was a victory for God in the saving and healing of a few souls and breaking of the power of the enemy. Held tent meeting a few days at Rice Lake. God is moving in this field. From Rice Lake we went to Ableman, Sauk Co, where Bro. Hahn had been laboring, in both the German and English languages, and his labors were owned of God. Praise the Lord! The people see the wonderful evening light and a number have accepted it and discern the one body. I rejoice that amongst my old friends and neighbors I was permitted to see this work of God. Praise his dear name! Bro. Hahn goes further north this week. I stay to labor in Baraboo City and vicinity. Pray for me. Yours set apart for the gospel,

Lucknow, S. C., Sept. 11.

Dear Saints: The meeting here closed last night and was a grand victory for God and his truth. Bro. J. E. Shaw and wife with Bro’s H. B. Blackwell, J. L. Goodman, and William Mathis, with other brethren from Darlington and Smithville, S. C. came to the help of the Lord against the mighty. The sectarian zealots were very busy night and day, hindering the work all they could, some of whom are professors of sanctification, and among whom is a holiness preacher that the devil is using most successfully. God have mercy on these people! Much prejudice has been removed and an opening has been made, we believe for the truth to take hold in the near future. Praise the Lord! We believe there are some good honest people here that will flee out of Babylon into Zion.

I want to ask here the prayers of God’s people for my wife. She has been a member of the M. E. sect ten or twelve years, and about nine years she has been professing salvation. But since the truth has come plainer and the light clearer, at times she is most terribly distressed and pleads earnestly against God’s plan of gathering his people into one. She prays privately and most earnestly desires that God will take away from us the sweet precious little children that he has given us to raise for his glory, only because of my loyalty to God and truth, and the salvation and baptism of our little boy, Neil. Oh how cruel, deluding and damning is the devil of sectism! Lord, help men and women to see how to get out from under false spirits! Yours in the one body, contending for the faith once delivered to the saints,

E. B. Haynes.

Dear Saints of God: I do praise the dear Lord for what he has done for me. He has saved me from all sin and keeps me saved by his power. Praise his holy name! He saves me from the tobacco habit, also from two secret orders. And I do praise his dear name for saving me from sectism. Hallelujah to Jesus for a full and complete salvation! Your brother saved, and sanctified by the blood of the Lamb,

Dear Saints of God: I feel like writing my testimony to the TRUMPET. I have been in the Baptist sect twenty-five years. But I was not satisfied; there was so much pride and corruption among them. I did not know what to do, but the Lord sent Bro. Thos. Carter to Anderson, and I heard the pure gospel. I have cut loose from every thing but Christ, and I feel so free since I have renounced sectism. I am standing on the Word. Praise the Lord forever! And I praise the Lord for healing me of lung trouble. I had a cough for fourteen years; the doctor could not cure me, but I laid down medicine and took the Lord for my physician and he healed me. Praise his name forever! Your sister, sanctified and healed by the power of God,

Dear Saints of God: The Lord still keeps me saved, and sanctified wholly. Praise God for his Holy Spirit bearing witness with mine that I am an heir of God and joint heir with Jesus Christ! I praise God for sending his shepherds around to feed his sheep with the true gospel of Christ. That was the food that I had long been seeking for. And when I sought it with all my heart I received it, and I have a blessing in my soul that just makes me love everybody and want them saved. How sad to see so many souls going down to ruin! I am so glad that I ever learned to trust Jesus with all my heart. I ask all of you to pray that I may be more profitable in God’s service. I remain your sister in the one body,

Dear Saints and Trumpet Readers: I feel it is to the glory of God that I write my testimony. Bro Slate, his wife and I have been of late spreading the gospel in southern Ind. near Evansville. After holding meetings about a week I took the fever, went to bed on Sabbath evening. On Tuesday evening the pains became severe. The brother did according to Jas. 5:14 and I was healed instantly. Praise the Lord! Two days afterward I took chills and fever, something which I had never had before.

In about a week or ten days I felt the Lord would have me come home. I was three days on the way and had a chill each day. When I came home the neighbors said I would have to take medicine. But praise God, I knew he could heal me if I would exercise the faith. So two days ago I did so, and the chills are gone. Praise God for his wonderful healing power! Truly the Lord is great, and greatly to be praised.

Your saved and humble brother,

Dear Readers of the Trumpet: I praise God that I can say with full assurance that he is my helper in time of need. I was taken sick in February, ’94 with La Grippe and suffered for three days; then I trusted my case in the hands of the Lord and was healed immediate. Also in ’95 same month I was taken with a severe attack of pneumonia fever. When my neighbors came in to see me some urged me to send for a physician, and that speedily, while others prescribed medicines; but I told them my trust was in the Lord Some went away and reported that I never could recover. Others said if I got over this they would believe in holiness. I could not send for the elders as in Jas. 5:14, 15, but I called on the Lord to heal me in faith believing, and the work was done, for which I give him all the glory. Praise his holy name! I was an excessive tobacco user, and after using it for thirty-three years the dear Lord took away all desire for it and coffee too. This was ten years ago and I have had no desire for it since. Pray for me that my faith may grow stronger.

Yours in Christ,

Dear Trumpet Readers. I feel led to write my testimony for the first time. I attended a meeting held here by a holiness sister, and God convicted my soul. The power of God came upon me so wonderfully that I could not resist. I thought if I could get home I could go to bed and go to sleep and get rid of those feelings, but the longer I lay the worse I felt. About 12 o’clock I rose from my bed and began to cry for mercy, and praise the dear Lord, God for Jesus’ sake pardoned all my sins and washed me in his precious blood, and made me white as snow. I praise God to-day that my name is written in the Lamb’s book of life. I have never doubted my salvation in the least. I have never joined any sect, and do not have any desire to; I belong to the church of Christ and that is the only true church. I am not sanctified yet, but but I ask the prayers of all the saints that I may get sanctified and receive the Holy Ghost.

Dear Brethren in Christ: I am saved sweetly and my nature is sanctified, and I am fitted in the body of Christ, and meet for the Master’s use, and my will is continually swallowed up in God’s will. I can truly say, His will, not mine, be done in everything. Glory be to God! It means so much to be down at the feet of Jesus, just where he can use us to his own glory. I have no time of my own; it all belongs to the Lord, even my secular work. God has put it upon me to rebuke sin in every way, and to preach the Word, sometimes to one or two, sometimes to hundreds in the street car or train. I am kept sweetly saved and sanctified by the mighty power of God every day of my life free from sin. Glory be to God! And he is my healer for my body as well as soul. About six weeks or more ago I severely sprained my ankle so that I could not bear the weight of my body to the ground. All my work companions said I would do well if I worked on it in a month or six weeks; but glory be to God I was led to ask God to manifest his healing power in my behalf. So I called on the elders of the church and was anointed with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith healed my ankle, and I went to work next morning without any inconvenience, and have worked every day since. Glory be to his precious name! I want the prayers of all of God’s people. Your brother in the one body,

Dear Trumpet Readers: Praise the Lord this morning for perfect peace in my soul! I am glad to report perfect victory over Satan, sin, and all things contrary to the will of God. Praise his name forever! The Lord has wonderfully blessed me since I last wrote to the Trumpet, and this beautiful Sabbath morning I feel led by the Spirit to tell the dear people how he keeps me free and above all sin each day that I live. Oh it is sweet to do the will of God in all things! And I do praise him for giving me a willing heart to just measure right up to the standard of his precious word. I praise the Lord for redeeming me from this world of wickedness, and placing me on that rock, Christ Jesus. I do praise the Lord for his precious healing power. He has wonderfully healed me, and I feel that it would be to his glory to tell the people of it. I have been in poor health for about two months and part of the time past going. I grew worse all the time and on Aug. 31, became almost powerless, was very low indeed. So Bro. Schreiber and husband anointed me and laid on hands according to Jas. 5:14, and the Lord just raised me up instantly and I have been going about my school duties since with perfect ease. Oh praise the Lord forever and ever! I am more determined to work for the Lord than ever; I cannot see why I should stand back one moment when he has done so much for me. No; glory be to Jesus, I intend to just walk out on his precious promises, and spend the rest of my days working for him, doing with my might what my hands find to do. Your sister, justified freely and sanctified wholly, healed bodily, and satisfied fully. Glory to Jesus!

CLARK. — September 7, Alpheus E. Clark was suddenly ushered into eternity; his body being cut asunder by the wheels of a freight car. He was a brakeman on the G. R. & I. R. R. and while attempting to make a coupling at Kendallville, Ind. or rather while stepping upon the track to pick up the coupling pin, he must have stumbled and fell across the rail immediately before the wheels. No eye but that of God saw how the accident occurred; but the poor man was heard to call out the name of the engineer, and in the same breath ‘‘Mercy!” When parties got to him, he could no longer speak, but his lips were seen to move, as in attempts to speak or pray, and in a few moments life was extinct. He left home Friday morning well and hearty, and Saturday afternoon the family received the sad intelligence of his death.

It will be ten years next month, when he and his father were braking on the same train, and his father was run over and cut in two in very much the same way. Bro. Alpheus was the first to go to him after his sad accident. He lived but a few hours. Surely “in the midst of life we are surrounded by death.” This is awfully true of all train hands. How important that all laborers in such dangerous places should be fully saved every moment of their lives!

Brother and Sister Clark were gloriously saved when the present truth was first published in Kalamazoo, about ten years ago, and have always held the truth since then. But they have at different times been overthrown and lost their faith and hope, and again returned to the Lord. Last winter they were restored from a backslidden state, and last July Bro. Clark was happy in the Lord. But again his soul gave way to a depressing temptation, and he dropped his profession. Still his heart seemed full of good desires. Not long ago he encouraged his wife to attend the weekly prayer meetings, assuring her that he would also soon return to the mercy of the Lord. When at home he always attended the meetings and took pleasure in helping to sing the songs of praise. So we humbly hope that he found mercy in his last moment of life.

Funeral services were attended by a large crowd of friends and people. He leaves a companion, three children, and a large circle of friends to mourn his sudden death. The Lord bless Sister Clark and the little ones with much grace and comfort in their sorrow, and save the many friends. Amen. Bro. Clark was thirty-three years, ten months and twenty-seven days of age. He has lived most all his life in that city, and since a boy of fifteen worked on the railroad.

And the Lord, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.

Josh. chap. 1 — Now after the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, it came to pass, that the Lord spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister, saying, Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel. Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast. There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide, for an inheritance the land, which, I sware unto their fathers to give them. Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest oberve to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Have I not commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying, Pass through the host, and command the people, saying, Prepare you victuals; for within three days ye shall pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the Lord your God giveth you to possess it.

And to the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to half the tribe of Manasseh, spake Joshua, saying, Remember the word which Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, saying, the Lord your God hath given you rest, and hath given you this land. Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle, shall remain in the land which Moses gave you on this side Jordan: but ye shall pass before your brethren armed, all the mighty men of valor, and help them; until the Lord have given your brethren rest, as he hath given you, and they also have possessed the land which the Lord your God giveth them: then ye shall return unto the land of your possession, and enjoy it, which Moses the Lord’s servant gave you on this side Jordan toward the sunrising.

And they answered Joshua, saying, All that thou commandest us we will do, and whithersoever thou sendest us, we will go. According as we hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we hearken unto thee: only the Lord thy God be with thee, as he was with Moses. Whosoever he be that doth rebel against thy commandment, and will not hearken unto thy words in all that thou commandest him, he shall be put to death: only be strong and of a good courage.

8:1 — And the Lord said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land.

10:8, 25 — And the Lord said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee. And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the Lord do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.

Judg. 6:10, 23 — And I said unto you, I am the Lord your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice. And the Lord said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.

1 Sam. 12:20 — And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not: ye have done all this wickedness: yet turn not aside from following the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart.

1 Kings 17:13 — And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.

2 Kings 6:16 — And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.

2 Chron. 20:14-20 — Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, came the Spirit of the Lord in the midst of the congregation; and he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the Lord unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s. To morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the brook, before the wilderness of Jeruel. Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the Lord with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go ye out against them: for the Lord will be with you. And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the Lord, worshipping the Lord. And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites, and of the children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the Lord God of Israel with a loud voice on high.

And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the Lord your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.

Isa. 7:4 — And say unto him, Take heed, and be quiet; fear not, neither be fainthearted for the two tails of these smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Rezin with Syria, and the sons of Remaliah.

TESTIMONIES.

“Thy Testimonies are Wonderful.” – Psa. 119:129.

Dear Brethren and Sisters: I am saved and enjoying the Savior’s love, and I do praise the Lord that he ever brought me out of darkness into his glorious light. He has healed me of gall stones, with which was suffering very much, and never could find any thing that would cure me until I accepted God’s word; and praise his holy name, he did heal me. He can heal both soul and body; and he also healed my eye. Please pray for my husband that he may be saved; pray for me that I may be kept humble at the feet of Jesus Your saved sister,

Catharine Braim.

Dear Saints of God: My testimony to-day is, I am saved and kept by the grace of God, trusting both soul and body to his saving and healing power. I live in the mountains and for many days at a time do not see a human being; but praise the Lord I have an abiding friend in Jesus. The Lord has completely taken away all desire for tobacco or strong drink of all kinds, for which I am very thankful. I was converted nearly three years ago and was baptized. My name is not written on any sect book of earth, but is written in heaven. I take the TRUMPET and am greatly strengthened by reading the cheering testimonies it contains. We do not hear holiness preached up here nor any preaching of any kind, but every body seems entirely taken up with the affairs of this world. The desire of my heart is that I may lead a righteous life and be the means of doing some good in the world. I ask an interest in the prayers of all who read this that the Lord will keep me faithful to him. Your brother in Christ,

F. M. Davis.

Dear Saints of God: I can truly say that Jesus sweetly saves me from all sin, and gives me victory continually over all the wiles of the devil. The Lord opened the way very wonderfully for me to hear this pure gospel preached by his anointed ones in Liverpool. When he found me, I was mixed up with the traditions of the fathers, and the awful millennium teaching, so rampant in England. God had to remove all these delusions before he could do a work for eternity; so he just had to pluck up, to break down, to throw down and to destroy all these pernicious doctrines. God’s judgments were poured forth, and the hail swept away the refuge of lies, and praise God, he made me willing in the day of his power to measure up, and to-day, my soul is filled with gratitude to him, for all the blessings of salvation. For we need to be continually thanking him, when we see the teeming multitudes that are rushing to the pit, that God should ever give us a chance of hearing and accepting this pure gospel. My sister too has just accepted the truth. Hallelujah to Jesus! He takes one of a city and two of a family and brings them to Zion. Jer. 3:14. Praise God forever! We have just closed our first camp meeting in this country. The Lord has been present in mighty power; signs and wonders have followed the ministry of his Word. People are starving for the pure gospel in England. Who will come to this needy vineyard, and push the battle to the gates? God is gathering out his remnant, but cur prayer to God is, to send out more laborers into the field. There are five of us here, out of all man-made machinery and bands. Pray for us. Your saved, sanctified and satisfied brother,

John Marshall.
