Jesus Our Guide.

__________

A friend is standing near me,
As I walk this earthly land,
To cheer lay heart and guide me
Till I join that happy hand.

I know he is smiling sweetly,
For his loving voice I hear,
Softening all my sorrows
And scattering all my fears.
He lovingly incites me

To trust and to confide;
Oh I will listen to him,
And keep him at my side.
He will not chide my longings,

But soothe them all away,
And bring the peace and blessings
From the great white
Throne to day.

Oh may we never falter,
But keep steadily in the way,
Then a crown of brightest glory
He will give me in that day.

Oh let us listen always,
And never go alone,
Where Jesus cannot follow
And find in our hearts a home.

__________

PRECIOUS NAME OF GOD.

_____

“AND the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one.” — Zech. 14:9. The question will arise to those who understand not the truth, “What day?” The blessed word shall decide. “After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight. Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the Lord: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.” — Hosea 6:2, 3. When the earth was wrapped in darkness, and the people without a Savior Jesus appeared, banished the gloom and redeemed his people from their sins. Matt. 1:21. God’s people were all of one mind, believed alike, talked alike, belonged to the same church (there is but one church), had but one name, were born of God, and had sufficiency in Jesus Christ, their head. This was the morning, the dawn of the salvation of God’s people; the church appeared in all the glory of God. Indeed Christ gave himself not in vain, Eph. 5:25-27, but alas, the devil, the enemy of all souls and truth, began to sow discord, and about the last of the first century the seeds took root, and about the middle of the third or a little later, bore fruit and became thoroughly manifest. This poisonous fruit weakened the vitality of the entire church, and ripened into popery, took unto itself another head (pope) besides Christ. This is the first day we speak of. This covers the space of time from about 270 A. D. until about 1530 (1260 yrs. Rev. 11:2, 3.) and this is the awful dark day. Amos 8:9. In 1501 when Luther entered the university at Erfurth, he found the precious word of God bound; at the convent he found a Bible chained to a post, but God opened up a way for the freedom of His word. The reformation grew and in 1530 the evangelic doctrine was established after the victory by faith at Augsburg. When Rome received this wound it was difficult for the people to forsake all the ways of the Mother of Harlots. One clung to this, one to that; even Luther did not get free from all, and the consequence was, several hundred daughters were born unto this mother. They did not talk alike, could not understand each other and had different names, yea John says he saw her and she was full of names. Rev. 17:3. We could not mention all the names, but we know a great many, such as Lutherans Baptists, Methodists, Dunkards, Mennonites, Campbellites, etc., yea, many names. This is the second day. It includes the space of time from 1530 to 1880.

When the daughters were born, they assumed a very modest appearance, but the nature of their mother began to develop in them, and in three centuries and a half they gained all the filthiness of the fornication of their mother. When a subject disobeyed the authority of the pope, he was excommunicated if he did not confess to this Antichrist. The same with the daughters. If any member disobeys the man-made creed, and does not confess, he is turned out of the sect (not the church). After this day (350 yrs.) of Protestism, or cloudy day, which is neither light nor dark, day nor night, Zech. 14:6-7, but twilight, truth mixed with so much error, God says he will raise us up; “in the third day he will raise us up.” O hallelujah to the Lamb forever and ever! “At evening time it shall be light.” — Zech. 14:7. Praise God! As Christ was raised from the darkness of the grave on the third day, so we are raised from the grave of spiritual darkness, “after two days” to follow his example, “who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth.” “His going forth is prepared as the morning.” How were they (his people) in the morning? They had one way, one leader, one language, one body, one church, one faith, one Lord, and one name, — the same in the blessed evening light. Glory to God in the highest! “In that day shall there be one Lord and his name one.” God indeed always was one and his name one, but the people of God were scattered by the apostasy, and called by different names, thus fulfilling the words of God in Isa. 44:5. “One shall say, I am the Lord’s, and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob; and another shall subscribe with his hand unto the Lord, and surname himself by the name of Israel.” And now seeing the terrible calamity, and destruction of Babylon, and hearing the mighty thundering tones of Almighty God that echo and re-echo, and shake the whole earth in awful agonizing tones, “Flee out of Babylon and deliver every man his soul.” “Come out of her, my people.” Her sins have reached unto heaven, and this great Babylon has come in remembrance before God to receive the fierceness of his wrath.

O dear reader, flee to Jesus for refuge, for there is no other name under heaven whereby we must be saved. In the name of Jesus shall the nations be blessed. The name of the Lord is a strong tower. The righteous runneth into it and are safe. All other names must perish. “Look unto me and be ye saved, all ye ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.” — Isa. 45:22. Jesus says, “I am come in my Father’s name and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him will ye receive.” — Jno. 5:43.

Jesus tells us, but few will enter the straight gate. Dear saints of the living God, be of good cheer. Look to Jesus, though our number be so few that a child may number us. Though Satan rage and storm, though the floodgates of hell, as it were, and all the demons of the bottomless pit come against us, stand firm on the everlasting rock; shout aloud the praises and hallelujahs to God on this sea of glass mingled with fire. Brandish the sword of the eternal Spirit, that lays low all the works of sin and builds up the kingdom of Christ in purity and oneness. For God will cut this work short in righteousness. Hallelujah! God bless the faithful. Amen.

CHRIST TEACHES CLEANLINESS.

_____

Dear Trumpet Readers: Truly, dear ones, I can praise God this morning for salvation, for that glorious salvation that cleanses one’s heart from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit and from sin. O praise the Lord for his kindness and for the precious word of God which is so plain that we have no excuse if the doors of heaven are closed against us. He has taught us cleanliness, holiness, purity, without which no one shall see God. 2 Cor. 7:1 teaches us to be cleansed from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. Certainly we can not be holy unless we are cleansed from filthiness. It means something more to be cleansed from filthiness than merely giving up tobacco, etc. If our hearts are clean, washed, and redeemed by the all cleansing blood of Jesus, we will have a desire to see our homes and our surroundings clean. I have actually heard people testify to full salvation, and really their house was so filthy as to have an unpleasant odor. O may God pity such and show them they are not where they should be. As I have often thought, cleanliness is next to godliness.

Christ teaches us cleanliness, not filthiness. Eph. 5:5 teaches us that no unclean person hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. No doubt many sisters are poor in this world’s goods and sometimes may get somewhat discouraged because they have not the many comforts and necessaries of life which others may have, and do not take the interest in keeping clean what little God has given. But let us praise God; let our circumstances be as they are and thank the blessed Lord for what he has given unto us, and keep it as we know will be pleasing unto God, that is, keep clean. Contentment with godliness is great gain. Certainly we have no godliness without cleanliness, therefore a child of God cannot be contented in filthiness. In Rom. 12:11 we are taught not to be slothful in business, but fervent in spirit, serving the Lord. If we have the burning love of God within our hearts and want to serve the Lord faithfully we must certainly serve him in cleanliness and holiness, without which no one shall see God. May God help his little ones not to be slothful concerning home and surroundings and the many cares and labors of the day which are enjoined upon us, but whatsoever we do, may it be done to the honor and glory of God. Amen.

Your saved sister,

Cora Pierce.

__________

DANGEROUS PREACHING.

_____

THE apostle says he that preacheth another gospel than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. Now dear children of God, we know the apostles preached the gospel with power from on high. So the Bible is given through inspiration, and teaches us the way that we should walk and please God. Holiness is taught in the Bible from Genesis to Revelations. Yet it is so painful, to day there are preachers declaring it is impossible to live without sin, and there are thousands of church members that believe the same. O that they would search the scripture earnestly and prayerfully, and read for themselves. When I see and hear so many false teachers, ray soul is made to cry out in agony against such instruction. Such preaching and teaching, and such living is contrary to the preaching, teaching, and living of our blessed Savior, who came upon earth to be our example. He preached, taught and lived a pure life.

We cannot be pure or live pure without being born of God. And we cannot live without sin while we are children of the devil. So all preachers and teachers that are out calling congregations together teaching them that sin is a great essential while we are on earth, are plainly showing themselves to be antichrists, of whom the apostles have warned us against. O may God’s cause be plainly set forth, so that young and old, rich and poor, high and low, and even the little children may understand. The apostle says I would rather speak five words in a known tongue, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue. My soul is burdened for the salvation of souls. O that every one who has tasted of the grace of God, would profit thereby.

Dear saints, put on the whole armor of God, and do all that you can for the salvation of souls. Whether you be in prison cells, or elsewhere, let your light shine. There may be some around you supposing they are Christians because they are church members, and yet they may not possess any more of the love of God than a heathen. I have often found it so. am determined by the grace of God to exert my talents in doing all the good I can while in this life. I will endeavor to insist on all, to prepare to meet God in peace, teaching all that this earth is the only place for our preparation. If we are not fit for heaven when we die we will never enter heaven.

__________

POPULAR PROFESSION.

_____

Editor of Gospel Trumpet: To day I attended one of our popular so-called churches, and while I heard some truths spoken, it reminded me of my school-girl days when we used to vie with each other, to see which could write the longest essay, and have the most words in it, but did not stop to think whether it was sense, or nonsense. When I see a man professedly called of God to preach the gospel, get up and read a long written essay, and a greater part of this what some one else has said or written, I come to the conclusion that they need a fresh baptism of the Holy Ghost, and one said, “They need to be converted.”

In the thirty-eight years of experience in this Christian warfare I have never met one that loved Jesus that lacked words to express what God wanted them to say, but I have seen those that wanted to make a flowery speech, or prayer, to be heard of men and please the ear of the ungodly, to utterly fail in their attempt. The question at the present day is not asked by the majority of church members, “Lord what wilt thou have me to do,” but what can I do in order to make myself “a popular Christian,” and have worldly honor and applause bestowed upon me? It appears they have forgotten these words: “Woe unto you when all men shall speak well of you.”

A rich man recently said, “I should be afraid to die,” but not so with the true child of God. They are waiting and working for the Master. Praise the Lord! there is rest for the weary pilgrim, just over the river, and with joy I am looking and anxiously waiting to cross over and dwell with Jesus. What a meeting that will be! God’s faithful ones gathered from all lands, to join in one ceaseless hallelujah around the throne! Sometimes when the waves of adversity roll high and the enemies of my Father’s kingdom hurl their fiery darts, and to all human appearances, the waves of opposition beat high over my head, glory to his name, the “everlasting arms” are around and beneath me, and I can pillow my head on his loving breast and feel safe and secure, for Jesus is my rock and high tower where I can flee and be safe.

Weary pilgrim, look up and rejoice, it is but for a little while and these storm-beaten barks of ours will be safely landed in the fair haven of rest. When my earthly possessions were all taken from me and I left to battle with the stern realities of life, how my heart went out in praise to God that my heavenly portion was beyond the reach of mortal man. The little deed is a good one, locked up ip the treasure house of heaven and thank God, beyond the robber’s reach; neither moth nor rust can corrupt, nor thieves break through and steal. What a glorious thought, safe, safe with Jesus!

Unconverted one, how stands your account to day? Are you looking with dread to the hour when Jesus shall call you to give an account of your stewardship here? Are you putting off the day of your return when it will be too late, the doors of mercy forever closed and you forever banished from the presence of God, and can no more mingle with God’s dear ones, and listen to songs of praise? What an hour that will be to the lost soul, forever banished from the presence of the pure and the holy! God pity and save you lost one, before it shall be declared to you, The harvest is past, the summer ended and your soul not saved.

Pilgrims of the cross, gird on the armor. A few more battles for Jesus, and then our work will be done. Pray for me that I may be among that happy number whose robes shall be washed and made white in the blood of the Lamb.

Yours in Jesus,

Mrs. L. M. Hoyt.

DIVINE HEALING
—OF—
SOUL AND BODY.

A New Book,
—by—
E. E. BYRUM.

_____

This book is just fresh from the author’s pen, and a glance at the contents is enough to convince any one of its interest and value to those seeking a more thorough khowledge of the Divine Being, and his dealings with people at the present time, as well as in days past.

The first part of the book very plainly marks out the way from sin unto full salvation, according to the teaching of the sacred word.

It presents the gospel truth in such a way as to throw a gleam of light into the pathway of the sinner, and enable him to see that there is hope beyond, through the mercies of a blessed Redeemer.

The BELIEVER is led to see the beauties of full salvation, and the joys in a life of Christian perfection.

THE HEALING OF THE BODY

constitutes the second part of the book. This consists of twenty-six chapters on doctrinal subjects, exposing and overthrowing false ideas and theories concerning the healing power in these last days, showing when, how, and under what circumstances and conditions God heals the sick and afflicted at the present time.

It gives a history and testimonies of healing from the time of Abraham, through the different ages, up to the present time.

The third part of the book consists of the

WITNESSES OF TO DAY.

These are wonderful testimonies of persons who have been healed within the last few years by divine power; such as being instantly restored to sight after having been blind for years; the lame throw away their crutches; broken bones are instantly healed; invalids who have suffered for years immediately arise and walk, after the prayer of faith is offered, etc. The author is personally acquainted, with nearly all the parties who have herein given their testimonies, and gives their names and addresses in the book, so that persons doubting the truthfulness of the same can write to the parties themselves.

It will be a precious volume to those who are afflicted in either soul or body. The chapters on faith, and also other subjects, will strengthen the faith of the reader, and aid in a closer walk with Him who is the “giver of every good and perfect gift.”

It contains 248 good-sized pages; good, plain print, on heavy paper. Neatly bound in cloth, $ .75. Library (half morocco), marble edge, $1.10. Send two cent stamp for special terms to agents. Address,

__________

The brethren should not forget the dear ones who are living on the camp ground, giving their entire time for the service of the Lord, and who are trusting God for all things. Any kind of eatables sent in will help to keep them, and help along the work.

__________

Says the organ of the Winebrennarian Church of God, “If we needed a system of rules for righteous men we could dispense with the gospel, and accept Confucianism.”

Just as well say, if we needed a system of rules, we could dispense with the gospel and accept the “system of cooperation,” formulated and subscribed to by that sect.

Sister L. A. Smith, of Plainwell, Mich., writes respecting the meeting announced at their place for Sept. 7- 14, “By all means it should be unlimited in time. Three weeks or even longer should be devoted to the work there. As heretofore meetings were just held long enough for the work to get started, and then closed.” Remember this, whosoever goes there. And it would be wise to apply the same advice in many other places.

__________

Sister M. L. Goodson, of 99 Welker St., Knoxville, Tenn. has been wonderfully healed of the Lord. She is going from house to house telling the good news of a perfect Savior for soul and body, and scattering papers and tracts. If any of God’s ministers could visit that city, they will find an open door at her house.

__________

Bro’s Wm. E. Moore, O. P. Allen and families have moved from Odon, Ind., to Oklahoma, and are anxious for some one to come and preach the the gospel there. Another family of saints is expected from Mo. to the same neighborhood soon, so that there will be a little church to begin with.

Address Wm. E. Moore.

Watonga, Okla. Ter.

__________

It will be seen in the meeting notices, that West Liberty, O., and Tekonsha, Mich. will have camp meetings instead of grove meetings. That is well, it is far less burden and labor to camp, even for a few days, and every family do for themselves, than to all lodge on a few families, and have them so ladened with care, as not to be able to get good in the meetings except the reward of serving tables.

__________

Bro. Spackey, writes us from Six Points, O. that the church of God is rising to her privileges, “and the dear Lord is using his little ones here, and we expect a better time at the Jerry City grove meeting than in recent years.” The brother also wishes the time of that meeting published as soon as practical. Who expects to be there? Who will suggest the time? Brethren, see to this; there should be a meeting held there by all means, and God wants some one to go there, and let that person or persons arrange the time immediately. Amen.

__________

TO THE WORK.

Dear Saints of the Most High God: Grace, mercy and peace be multiplied to you all continually. All ye that prize the complete deliverance of your souls through the blood of Christ, and feel an active interest in the salvation of your fellowmen, “having on the whole armor of God,” come up to the battle of the Lord against the mighty.

We feel impressed to propose to our brethren in Mo., as the C. M. season in our state will soon begin, to spend one day in fasting and special prayer for the general success of the Mo. campaign. We feel this will be in the order of the Lord and on the Bible line. Dear brethren, we do not speak of this as a yoke imposed upon you or say you shall do this: but ask the Lord about it and then in faith proceed to do your duty and God’s will. O dear ones, prove by your works that you feel an interest in the souls of men who are in the kingdom of darkness and under Satan’s control. Let every camp be the convocation of saints in Bible unity and holy love. Do not fail to attend some of the camp meetings or all of them if you can. You can’t afford to miss these spiritual feasts. Let all expect great and lasting good in Jesus’ name. Amen.

A. B. Stanberry.

VAIN OPINIONS.

_____

A writer in the CHURCH ADVOCATE says, “There is a heap of controversy in the church that ought to be settled. In Ohio, and in nearly all the elderships they have a different way to attend to the ordinances.”

Nothing but salvation will settle this contention. But we see but little, hopes in that direction, for such as get full Bible salvation, they turn out of their synagogue.

A writer in the same issue gives vent to the flesh to pervert and oppose the Bible doctrine of the second grace. And the editor, under caption of “The High Christian Ideal,” says, “Especially does Paul insist on perfection, the reaching after the perfect ideal which the gospel sets before us.” Here he explains Paul’s injunction to perfection, as simply requiring us to be continually reaching after perfection. What? Only reaching after and never attaining? Yes, this worldly wise editor continues to misrepresent the Apostle and Christ in these words: “He (Paul) does not say in fact that we shall ever become perfect. Perhaps our Savior did not imply as much as that when he insisted that his disciples should be perfect.”

What shall we say of such contradiction of the inspired Word? How sadly it exhibits the carelessness, ignorance or willful disrelish for, and perversion of the word. It is a fearful thing to break one of Christ’s least commands and to teach men to do so. But what an awful thing it will be in the day of judgement for men who occupy the editorial chair of a religious paper to recklessly contravene the word of God with their vain puffed up opinions. Paul, “does not say in fact that we shall ever become perfect,” so says Editor Famey, but thus saith Paul:

“Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the Fear of God.” — 2 Cor. 7:1.

“This also we wish, even your perfection.” — 2 Cor. 13:9.

Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.” — 2 Cor. 13:14.

And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ:” — Eph. 4:11-13.

“Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal, even this unto you.” — Phil. 3:15.

“For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God.” — Heb. 7:19.

“Therefore leaving the [first] principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on to perfection.” — Heb. 6:1.

“For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before.” — Heb. 10:14, 15.

“Perhaps,” says the big salaried editor, “our Savior did not imply as much as that when he insisted that his disciples should be perfect.” O may God forgive this direct charge of inconsistency upon the character of Christ. He “insisted that his disciples should be perfect,” is frankly admit ted: but to soothe his own conscience, and pleas eand pamper the flesh of the whole carnal sect, the editor ventures the assertion that “perhaps” he did not imply as much as he really insisted upon. Perhaps the Son of God was feigning a little, and did not mean what he said. So when he said, “Be ye therefore perfect,” perhaps he meant, ye can “never be perfect.” “Every one that is perfect shall be as his Master.” But there is none perfect, etc. But what shall we do in reference to these commands? Why he adds, “We are steadfastly to aim to attain it.” Nay, the teacher sent from heaven demands of us now and here to be perfect even as our Father in heaven is perfect, and his almighty grace fulfills all his commands in us who believe and obey him. Amen.

Dear Beloved Saints: I am still trusting in God who supplies with all things needful, and gives complete victory. But am sorry to say that Bro. Miller, who expected to go on our Eastern tour can not go. But I still feel the Lord leading me to go, and am receiving letters every day with very urgent calls, both from the East and Southeast. There is a great field in S. C. and Ga. opened for the truth, work enough for many of God’s holy workers. I would be very glad to go there if the Lord wills but have so many calls in the East that it may keep us there all winter. Now if the Lord should lead any one to the South, let me know and I can give you the addresses of quite a number that are very anxious for the truth. Also would be very glad if the Lord would send Bro. Daugherty or some other holy man of God to work with me. His holy will be done. Amen. I shall work here in Canada, a week or two yet D. V. Address me at Welland, Ont. Pray for me and this work.

Yours all at his feet,

Dear Saints of the Living God: May the dear Lord bless you abundantly in all things. Amen. Since camp meeting we have been doing what we could for the cause of our Master. Expect to go to Kendall and Gobles, and wherever the Lord leads. If Bro. and Sister McDonald from Blendon still desire me to hold meetings in their neighborhood, they will please address me soon at Lacota, Mich. I praise God this afternoon for the sweet peace I have in my soul; joy unspeakable and full of glory. O praise God for the establishing grace, and the glorious anointing, Christ within the hope of glory. Dear Saints, Greeting: We began meeting at Hoppertown, July 7th, assisted by Bro’s Hechler and A. L. Byers, Sisters Lena Shoffner and Birdie E. Fink, whom the Lord blessed and used to his glory in presenting the truth. Bro. Husted also was present. We had very good meetings. While many resisted the truth yet we know our labor was not in vain. One soul saved and two cases of healing; and a general refreshing of the saints. On Lord’s day the Belknap saints were represented by Bro. and Sister Fry and Bro. Bolds who were at the Feast. The Lord help all to stand firm and glorify God with one heart and one mind. The meeting closed Monday night, the 11th. While a few references were read on what is the church and what is not, and explained in the Spirit, it seemed to stir up all the bitter fountains present. When will men cease to pervert the right way of the Lord? May God have mercy on those that oppose themselves that they may recover out of the snare of the devil before too late. Bro. Hechler has gone to Ill. The rest of the company will help in the South Haven meeting, the Lord willing. May the Lord keep each one to live and work with an eye single to the glory of God for the rescuing of lost souls. We ask the prayers of all saints.

Dear Saints of God, Greeting: It has been some time since our last report, but praise God, we come with glad tidings of great joy. All glory be to God for his wonderful works to the children of men! God can work and none can hinder. We now give a report of the meeting held at Nishnabotna, Mo., July 3 and 4. The meeting was a grand victory for God. Some were sanctified during the meeting, and the church wonderfully strengthened and built up in the most holy faith. There were present at meeting Bro. A. A. Kinzie, Sister Janet K. Sillers, and Bro. J. G. Webb of Elk Dale, Mo. and a host of the saints of God. Glory be to God! There were shouts of victory heard in every coming together. We had ordinance service at three o’clock on Monday afternoon, and oh what glory filled each holy breast! Even sinners were awe-stricken. Seventy of God’s little ones took part in the ordinance service. The Lord did wonderfully manifest himself, and there was leaping and shouting and praising God all through the meeting. Glory to God!

To all the Saints of God, Greeting: We are happy in Jesus with easy and complete victory through him. Praise God! The Lord is adding to his church here such as are being saved. At the prayer meetings sinners get deeply convicted and quite often one comes seeking Jesus, and he verifying his words, “Seek and ye shall find.” We had two meetings the 4th of July. It was glorious. One soul was sanctified. Glory to Jesus! Six have recently been baptized in water. Babylon is raging but far above her raging are heard the praises of saints while God’s work is moving on in sweet calmness and harmony. Wife is helping in the work of the Lord in the Floyd County grove meeting. We expect to go forth soon to battle for Jesus wheresoever he leads. Pray for us, all ye saints.

Stanley, W. Va., July 14, 1892.

Dearly Beloved Brethren and Sisters: May joy and peace be unto you all for Jesus’ sake. Amen. This finds us all well soul and body. Bro’s Cox and June, Bro. Bixler and wife and myself took our leave of the saints at the Grand Junction camp meeting, June 22. Before crossing the lake we thought the good Lord would be pleased in our worship, so before retiring we went up on the upper deck and offered our evening sacrifice; which we felt was acceptable in his sight. Although the storm raged our blessed captain (Christ) landed us safe on the other shore. We then took train for this place where we found many precious souls hungry for the truth. We also found that the devil, who is the father of lies, had already poisoned the minds of the people by telling them that we were Mormons. But judgment was laid to the line and righteousness to the plummet and the hail swept away all the refuge of lies, and the water (word) overflowed the hiding places, and the devil with all his hosts were put to silence, by the word of God which liveth and abideth forever. The meetings were largely attended by attentive listeners. Congregations of two or three hundred came together filling the house at nearly every meeting. We found some dear souls who were walking in all the light they had, but on account of false teaching their eyes were blinded. But when they heard the straight word of God the scales fell from their eyes and they were made to exclaim, “I see as I never saw before.” Ah yes, how changed! How has the faithful city become a harlot! It was full of judgment. Righteousness lodged in it, but now murderers. Isa. 1:21. Three souls came for pardon and found the Lord precious to their souls. Meeting continued two weeks. From here we go to an adjoining neighborhood where we expect to remain as long as the Lord wills. Two were baptized testifying that henceforth they would live free from sin. We pesire the prayers of all the saints of God, that, we may be kept humble and used to his glory. Amen.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT.

Scientific Facts Respecting Food.

_____

FOR the source of information given in this article we are largely indebted to a very valuable book by Dr. M. L. Holbrook, of 23 Clinton Place, N. Y. entitled, “Eating for strength.” The same author publishes other good books, and we would advise you to send and get his catalogue.

By a careful analysis of the human structure, it is found that only three classes of nutrients are required by all mankind, and under all circumstances to sustain our physical structure. They are the following; namely, Protein, Fats, and Carbohydrates. Dr. Holbrook brings to his aid the results of investigations, made by a thorough chemist, who had carefully applied the facts in science to the great question of food. Recent investigations by various physiologists and chemists supply us with a data by which we can arrive at an approximate knowledge of the proper amount and the proportions in which those three classes of nutritive elements should be used. For convenience they figure on a person weighing 100 pounds; from which we can make a calculation for persons weighing more. For one day’s supply for the one hundred pounds person, the table runs as follows:

Protein.
ounces
Fats.
ounces
Carbohydrates,
ounces
For hard work 3.5
or 3.5
3.5
1.65
9.5
14.7
For light work 3.0
3.0
3.0
1.5
9.5
14.7.

It will be seen by a glance at this table that the Protein and the fats are required by the human system, in nearly equal proportions, while the Carbo. in the upper line is about one third more than the former two put together, and in the second arrangement the Carbo. required is about three times that of the other put together. It is therefore the most prominent part of our food. In addition to the three classes of food material spoken of above, we should have mentioned that water, and certain mineral substances, as salt and iron enter into the composition of our bodies. Protein, is found in the muscular, or lean parts of animals, eggs, of which the white is almost pure Protein, the gluten of grains, the curd of milk, and the vegetable caseine of peas, beans and cereals; namely, wheat, rye, oats, etc.

The fats are generators of heat in the system. They are supplied either from fat meats, or from sugar, and the starch in corn and other grains. A serious cause of various diseases, is that of eating a superfluity of fat. Dr. Bennett charges upon pastry cooks a large proportion of consumptives. Dr. Brown says, “There are many children who refuse to eat a piece of fat meat. They will eat the lean, but cut off the fat, and submit to punishment rather than eat it. The instinct of the child is perfectly right, and its indications are not to be disregarded.” Says Dr. Holbrook, and our best physiological scholars agree with him: “Nuts contain a sufficient amount of oil; and sweet fruits abundant in sugar, may to some extent supply its place.”

“A lump of fat swallowed alone would melt in the stomach and float about there without being digested, would begin to decompose and yield acrid bodies which would irritate the stomach and perhaps cause severe headache.” “Many a child has been made sick by a piece of fat bacon swallowed with only a small piece of bread and a large piece of butter.” But while a surplus of fat is bad, some is necessary to the body, and butter in moderate use with bread is suited to our wants. It is not necessary to describe our third class, the Carbohydrates. It is sufficient for all practical purposes to learn in what particular kinds of food they are obtained. Remember we have seen that they constitute a half, or two- thirds of our needed nutriments. Now where shall we go for all these articles of human diet in their best form? Says Dr. Holbrook, “We know perfectly well that the vegetable kingdom supplies in rich abundance every element of our food. The fats of the vegetable world are quite as abundant as in the animal kingdom. The carbohydrates are not to be found in the animal kingdom at all; and even the proteits of the vegetable kingdom exist in as great abundance as in animal food. Why, then, eat flesh? There can be but one excuse for it, and that is the force of habit for ages.”

Dear Trumpet Readers: I praise the Lord this fine morning that I am saved, and willing to do any thing for Christ. I feel when I hear them persecute us, God’s little ones, we only can praise him. I am but sixteen years of age, but by God’s strength I will press onward and upward. I have a mother saved, and the hired man, and a young lady that stays here are saved. My father and brother are not saved yet. We all ask you to pray for them that they may be saved. I want to be low at Jesus’ feet.

Dear Saints: I am so glad I can testify straight for my Lord, for I know I have passed from death unto life, because I do love all of God’s little ones. I often hear some say, I am trying to live a Christian and even boast of all their good works, yet when the pure word of God is applied to them they begin to dodge around it in different ways. Oh how many deceivable ways the devil has set up to catch souls! It is easy to know the children of light from the children of darkness, for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

Dear Saints: I am glad to testify that I am saved and trusting in Jesus. I praise him for his healing and saving power. I can testify of his divine healing. When I first came out into the light I made up my mind not to take medicine and I had the catarrh so bad that I only breathed through the left nostril and my ears would break and run blood and matter. So the devil said, If you don’t take medicine you’ll die. So I heeded to his voice and got medicine, and the more I doctored the worse I got, until at last I laid aside the medicine knowing that God would have to heal me or I would not live. So I prayed to God and he heard me. Bless his name! I also am praising God for the impression he is making on my father, and I make an earnest request for all the dear saints to pray for him that he might be saved. Pray that I may live holy before God.

Dear Brethren: Grace, mercy and peace abide with you all is my prayer. I praise God that he ever called after me and that he brought me out into his glorious light which keeps me day by day. Blessed be the name of the Lord! It will be five years next fall since I received the light and walked therein, and praise God, I never get tired of the way. I live in a very wild place where they know nothing about sound doctrine. I get persecuted because I won’t go to their big supper and such like, but praise God, I am willing to suffer all the persecutions they can put upon me for Christ’s sake.

When the Lord saved my soul he took all the desire for worldly conformity from me. Praise the name of the Lord forever! Oh how I long to be at a good Holy Ghost meeting! But the will of the Lord be done. Pray much for me that the Lord may keep me saved in this wicked place.

Dear Saints of the Living God: I feel led of the Lord, to write my testimony for the first time. Six years ago last April, Jesus pardoned my sins, and I went on serving God as best I knew how, until Bro. and Sister Longerbone came here four years ago in May to preach the true doctrine of our Lord Jesus Christ. I was convicted for sanctification but was not willing through fear to come out firm and bold for God. I felt I lost favor in God’s sight, but never gave up my belief that I was still justified. I knew I didn’t live as near to my God as I did before, but for all my waywardness God never left me but had mercy on me, and followed me whithersoever I went. So two weeks ago I felt I couldn’t go on in this way any longer unless I knew for sure I was saved. So I confessed to my Savior that I was at a loss to know just where and how I stood with my God, and that I was willing to repent and ask forgiveness, which I did. On the twelfth of May while Sister Nettie Henderson was praying with my father (who was seeking Jesus) who has been sick for over four months with paralysis, it was there at his bedside that I received the witness that the Lord Jesus had forgiven me and that I was truly a child of God. Oh how good it is to know and feel that Jesus is with us! No one who has never felt the love and power of Jesus can ever tell of the joy and gladness that fills our hearts. It is truly wonderful of God’s goodness and mercy towards the children, of men. By the grace of God I mean to go on unto sanctification; for “this is the will of God, even our sanctification.” I ask all the saints to pray for me, and pray for my husband who is not yet saved.

Your saved sister,

Nellie Tatman.

Dear Trumpet Readers: My testimony is, the Lord saves me and fills me with his love that passeth all understanding and joy full of glory. As I have not the privilege of meeting with the saints, I ask the people of God to pray for us that all things that are a hindrance to his cause may be taken out of the way that his name be glorified here. “Delight thyself also in the Lord and he shall give thee the desire of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the Lord: trust also in him and he shall bring it to pass.” Glory be to his name! Two years ago my soul was burdened for full salvation for my father and family. He heard my cry and answered my prayer. Blessed be his holy name! My youngest sister is afflicted with consumption, and my father with cancer. I know God hears and answers prayer. Pray for them and for me.

Yours in the love of Christ,

Josie Adams.

Dear Saints: May the Lord bless you is my prayer. We are saved ant kept by the power of God. We begin to feel the Lord stirring us up to go forth in the harvest of the Lord again. May the Lord help us to put in the sickle and blow the Trumpet, for the Lord says he will roar out of Zion. May God send forth his wort through his watchmen like a fire, and like a hammer to break the strong hearts of sinners, and open the eyes of the blind. “I have put my words in thy mouth, and I have covered thee in the shadow of mine hand, that I may plant the heavens and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto Zion, thou art my people.” Amen. Now we ask the prayers of the saints, that if it be the will of the Lord to send us forth, he will open up the way and use us to his glory.

Yours, sanctified to do the whole will of God,

J. N. & I. E. Worden.

Dear Trumpet Readers: God bless and keep you with an everlasting salvation is my prayer. Amen. Now I will give to all the readers my testimony to the glory of God. I can say I am wonderfully saved and free from all unrighteousness, and O my soul is calm, and O so sweetly resting in Jesus and submissive to the will of my God in all things. O praise his holy name! Now I will also tell you why I was not at the Grand Junction camp meeting. Sickness, death, and pain came in the way. I was fixing and packing for camp meeting, but the Lord seemed to see otherwise. Just a few days before I would have started I received a message that one of my grand-daughters was dying. We laid away a grand-daughter and a niece and a sister-in-law inside of two weeks, which was very solemn indeed, and in this time I fell and came very near breaking my back. I cried mightily to the Lord for help. For three days I could not get up nor lie down, nor walk without help. And O the pain I suffered. The people would come to see the dying daughter, and finding me in such a helpless condition, every one would have a cure. But I told them I would wait and see. And on the third day between five and six o’clock they placed me in a chair and I was telling of the wonderful power of God in healing the sick, and while I was telling of God’s wonderful power, God touched my body with a cooling sensation all through my back, which took away all the pain and the burning fever, and I jumped up out of the chair and walked and praised the Lord. O hallelujah for his mighty saving and keeping power! O who would not serve our God! This all happened in a neighborhood where such things never were witnessed. God is getting glory out of it and I believe souls will be brought into this blessed evening light in that neighborhood. To God be all glory and praise forever and ever. Amen.

Dear Saints: May the love of God, and the wonderful peace, exist and abide in your souls, as it does in mine. Praise his holy name forever! Oh! it is simply wonderful, this mighty keeping power. Glory to God!

I feel led of the Spirit to give my testimony this morning, for the first time. It made me shout within when I read in the Trumpet, “Obey the word,” by Sister Nancy John. It is no month yet that I am wholly saved and sanctified in the precious blood of the Lamb. Glory to God! I have not had much experience yet, but I had a terrible battle for three and a half days, and I would sooner shoulder a musket and go into real battle than to go through it again. But praise the Lord! Hallelujah! Victory! And the battle was between the will of God and the will of man. I did not belong to any sect for the last two years, praise the Lord, but went with wife to her denomination to please her, and there I taught a Sunday school class of young, ladies. And when the Lord freed me and I came home, he told me not to teach that class any more. You may think that seems strange, but praise the Lord, his ways are not our ways. Then the enemy began to charge, and made a terrible onslaught, and the darts came from every direction. Several heavy slugs shook the walls, (but they did not fall,) and consisted of, “You may be the means of saving some of those precious souls and lead others to Christ and be a light unto many others.” But the Spirit said, Be not unequally yoked together with unbelievers. Be not partakers of their sins; let them come out if they want to hear you. And the Lord helped me to repulse the charge and I had won the victory through him. But there was one more sharp attack and that in person, “Well won’t you go with me to church and teach your class?” I was just putting out the white flag when the Holy Spirit (my reserve) came to my assistance and said, “Didn’t you lay every thing upon the altar? Didn’t you say, Thy will be done? I came to abide with thee; and comfort thee, You can’t serve man and God.” And I said, “Lord, Thy will be done.” Praise the Lord, oh my soul, and forget not the good he has done for thee! The praise of the Lord is continually in my mouth.

Oh! dear saints, by all means let the Holy Ghost abide within. The Lord has done so much for me. The Lord shows so plain to me the right and wrong. He showed me a week later that the class was a little idol of mine, and I did not know it. If little idols take such fighting, oh Lord, have mercy on them that have big ones. But praise the Lord, the idol had to go and I am free indeed, and its glory all the way along. Pray for me, and especially for my companion that she may be brought out into the evening light. I am all alone here but Christ is with me. May the Lord send some fire-baptized souls in here and reap, for the harvest is ripe and the laborers are few. Pray the Father to send laborers. God bless you all.

Yours in Christ,

Wm. S. Kriebel.
