My Ideal Home.

_____

My ideal home on earth would be
A home where Jesus is the light;
Where parents all the truth can see,
And walk the path that leads aright.

Where the parents have given their lives,
Into the hands of the dear Lord;
And live as did the prophets wise,
And are obedient to his word.

The children should honor and obey,
Those parents in the Lord,
Who’ve learned to walk the narrow way,
And love to read his holy word.

The father in that home I’d see,
Patient, true, kind and enduring;
Every trial and temptation there be,
Which to the better life are luring

The mother, oh, that mother dear,
Whose path is heavenward wended,
Will leave her family walking near
When her dear life is ended.

And then the daughters in that home
I’d have be virtuous, true and mild,
And never from that home to roam
With worldly company that is wild.

And when a husband they would choose,
Would he be one of righteous ways;
For what a happy life she’d lose, [days.
By being with one unrighteous all his

The sons I’d have from drink abstain,
And all other bad habits too;
Seek Jesus and eternal life obtain,
Keep only the narrow path in view.

If this could he our home on earth,
How happy in heaven we will be;
When we leave this world of sin and mirth,
Our blessed Savior there to see.

NEW TESTAMENT WITNESSES.

_____

TURNING to the New Testament, we find that foremost among the workers of miracles was Jesus: He who said, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth;” the incarnate Son of God, who was without sin, “neither was guile found in his mouth.” The miracles wrought by him are so numerous that it is not necessary to give a detailed account of many of them, and by only refering to a few of them will be sufficient to show the most skeptic that his power was unlimited.

At the close of his sermon on the mount, Jesus came down from the mountain, and a leper came unto him, and as Jesus touched him, he was cleansed of his leprosy. Next he healed the centurion’s servant of palsy, and did not even go to visit the servant, but only spoke the word and the work was done. He touched the hand of Peter’s wife’s mother and the fever left her.

“When even was come, they brought many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: that it might be fulfilled, which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses. — Matt. 8:1-17. In the following chapter we read of a certain ruler who had great faith in the power of Jesus, who came to him, saying, “My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live. And Jesus arose and followed him, and so did his disciples. And, behold, a woman which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him and touched the hem of his garment: For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment I shall be whole. But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour. And when Jesus came into the ruler’s house and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise, he said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. But when the people were put forth, he went in and took her by the hand, and the maid arose. And the fame hereof went abroad into all the land. And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us. And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord. Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it. But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country. And as they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil. And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel. But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils. And Jesus went about all the cities and villiages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.”

Here we see that not only the dead was raised, but he healed “every sickness and every disease among the people;” “insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see and they glorified the God of Israel.”

These miracles of healing;the feeding of the five thousand; (Mark 6.) turning water into wine; (Jno. 2.) stilling the storm; (Luke 8.) walking on the sea; (Matt. 16.) and many others show his supernatural power, yet when he called his disciples he gave them power to do the same things, and did not even limit the power to the apostles alone, but to those who would believe on him; for he said: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. * * If ye shall ask anything in my name, I will do it.” — 14:12-14.

“When he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out,and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease . . . . . And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils; freely ye have received, freely give.” — Jno. 10:1-8; Mark 16:15-18.

He gave a like commission to the seventy whom he sent forth, and when they returned they rejoiced on account of these things, but Jesus told them to rejoice that their names were written in heaven.

In Jno. 14:16, another Comforter was promised,which promise was fulfilled. — Acts 2:4.

The scriptures have already been given showing the miraculous power of our Lord and Savior, and his command to his disciples to do the same things, and now we will give attention to what took place after the death of our blessed Savior. As they had before gone forth working miracles and preaching the kingdom, it seemed now that a double portion of power had been bestowed upon them; as “they were all of one accord in one place on the day of Pentecost, the Spirit gave them utterance to speak with such power and authority that the different nations of people were astonished at them, and Peter was not afraid to give them the plain truth and expose the wickedness of the people.

Now followed a circumstance substantiating the words of Jesus, and showing his power through his children when the lame man was healed at the gate of the temple. Acts 3:1-11. * * * Quite an excitement followed, which brought many people out to hear the word of God preached, and doubtless many came through mere curiosity; however the truth preached had its effect and about five thousand souls were saved. For this cause Peter and John were put in prison, and upon being released were threatened and warned not to teach in the name of Jesus any more. But they went in prayer and said: “Now Lord, behold their threatenings; and grant unto thy servants that with all boldness they may speak thy word, by stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.” And in a very short time afterward, “they were all with one accord in Solomon’s porch. And of the rest durst no man join himself to them; but the people magnified them. And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women; insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them. There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed, every one.” — Acts 5:12-16. Jesus healed all those who were brought unto him that were sick, and here we find his disciples doing the same thing, for the Word says, “They were healed every one.” In Acts 9:32-42 we read of the sick of palsy being healed and the dead raised. * * *

Many wonderful things were performed by the other apostles, also showing forth the power of God to heal the body and save the soul. And these manifestations of the power of God were always followed by much persecution, because it had a tendency to draw people to Christ, and also the enemies of the sacred truth of the gospel, were stirred up often to violence of the worst kind. The disciples did not fear to preach the gospel in all its purity, and with all plainness of speech declare the whole counsel of God, exposing the wickedness of evil doers and the horrors of sin. When Paul and Barnabas came to Iconium, the Lord “granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands,” among which was the healing of a cripple. — Acts 14:8-10. Spirit of divination cast out. — Acts 16:16-18. Raising the dead. — Acts 20:9-12. * * *

At the time when they were shipwrecked and cast on the island of Melita, among a barbarous people, Paul gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them, on the fire; there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand. And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengence suffereth not to live. And he shook’ off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm. Howbeit they looked when he should have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god. In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island, whose name was Publius; who received us and lodged us three days courteously. And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed and laid his hands on him, and healed him. So when this was done, others also, which had diseases in the island, came, and were healed.” — Acts 28:3-9.

By reading the Word we find that the power to do such things was given to others besides the twelve apostles. In the tenth chapter of Saint Luke we find the seventy whom Christ sent forth were endued with the same power. And in the last chapter of Mark we find this power was given to “THEM THAT BELIEVE.” It was through the faith of some of those believers that even the prison doors were opened and Peter set at liberty, for prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him. — Acts 12:5. Many other testimonies might be given, but it is unnecessary, for in “the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.” The command in the last chapter of Saint Mark, which was given to “them that believe,” has never been done away with, and never will be as long as God has a people on earth who have faith enough to believe and obey his word: When the day of the healing is past and God refuses to fulfill those promises, rest assured that the day of faith will also be past, and salvation work will be at an end.

__________

A RESOLUTION TO READ THE BIBLE.

_____

THE Bible is conceded to be the best, greatest, and grandest book in the world. Yet many who make this concession do not act consistent with it. They read and study other books and literature more than the Bible — rather than the Bible. Newspapers and periodicals of every description, novels of all kinds, histories, biographies, educational works, scientific works, philosophical works, literary works of all sorts, and even theological works — by many all these are read and studied, but the Bible is suffered to lie buried in the dust.

Newspapers are entertaining, but the news from heaven ought also to be somewhat interesting to mortals. I believe there is about as much instruction, comfort and sweetness in the Bible as in even religious newspapers, though many do not seem to think so.

Dickens is a great teacher of human nature but not as great as the God of the Bible, the creator of human nature. Greene’s history of the English people is a fine work: there is, on the other hand, a history of the Jewish people by one Moses, which is a work of some value. Franklin’s Autobiography is quite readable, but to a few persons St. Matthew’s life of Jesus Christ is about as readable. Texts Books are valuable to educate a man for a few days on earth, but the Bible is as important to educate for eternity. Hall’s Problem of Humain Life is a celebrated production; and on the other hand, God’s problem of superhuman life is a production of great and glorious renown.

Plato, Aristotle, Lord Bacon, Locke Kant, were great philosophers and wise men, while on the other hand, there was one Solomon who was himself a man of considerable wisdom. Homer, Virgil, Dante, Shakespeare, and Milton are poets of high rank; but there is also poetic fire in David or Job. There is transcendent genius and merit in the writings and essays of Addison, Macaulay, Johnson, Lamb, Emerson, Carlyle; but there is also literary worth in Paul’s Epistle to the Romans, or his letter to the Hebrews, or the Apocalypse of John. To read Augustine, Bernard, Owen, Howe, Baxter, Bunyan, Taylor, Kempis, Edwards, Moody, Talmage, might be beneficial; but to read Isaiah, Jeremiah, Peter, Paul, John, might also be more profitable.

Yes that old book that most people care so little about is somewhat of a book after all. It has stood the storms of centuries, and is still on a firm foundation. As a great literary production as well as in all other respects, the Bible stands at the head of the list. In no book on earth can you find more interesting biography, more charming history, sounder philosophy more powerful logic, or sweeter poetry than in the Bible; and all in the most simple natural and perfect style. It is a grand library of sixty-six magnificent little volumes, covering a great variety of most momentous subjects. But the chief reason a poor erring mortal of earth should read and study the Bible is, it tells him the way to heaven and immortal glory as no other book can do. We are all travelers to another country where we shall live, not just a little while as we do here, but where we are going to. live forever; and this is the only book that can tell us about that country, and whether it will be good or bad with us.

Now if the Bible is thus, the book of books, we surely ought to read and study it before all other books, and more than all other books. It is our solemn duty, — we can have no excuse. But before we read any book much we must get our consent or will to do so. Having consented, willed or resolved to read the Bible, we must not forget to carry out the resolution. To prevent forgetting it, is well to write the resolution. A friend of mine made a resolution to read the New Testament through twice within five months. I committed the resolution to paper to keep. Before the five months had expired he informed me he had gone through twice. One time he went through in a little over two weeks. If he had not made this resolution, like many others, he would probably have neglected much if not all this reading. Making and writing down a resolution fastens a thing on the mind, and we are more apt to do that thing. I have tried it. I have done things I would have neglected if I had not come at them in this way. I have persuaded about one hundred persons to make a resolution, that by the help of God they would read the New Testament through at least once this year. Of course they — at least some of them — may read it a half dozen or more times. I did not tell them that once would be sufficient. And there has evidently been some Bible reading done that would have been otherwise neglected. It matters not what may be your belief, color, age, or anything else so you will read through the New Testament. If you prefer to read it through two, three, or a half dozen times, or if you wish to include the Old Testament also, do so. Read it within twelve months from the time you begin, if you cannot before the year closes. Oh! friend, will you not resolve? Will you not read the greatest of all books? Will you not hear what Jesus says, — search the scriptures? — Jno. 5:39 Can you not say, I WILL hear and believe it? and the work is done. On it your destiny may hinge. God help you to do so is my prayer.

Thos. J. Easterwood.

Kirby, Miss.

GRATIOT CO. CAMP.

Merrill, Mich., June 24, 1893.

To all the saints in Gratiot and adjoining county, the time is passing fast away and if we want a camp meeting, in the name of the Lord it is time we were up and doing. Now as the Fourth is a day set apart for the worldly people to have a great day, so let us as children of God have that day to do something for the Lord’s cause. There is a pavillion to be built and if the Lord permits I will have the posts on the ground by that time, so let us as children of God get together on the fourth of July, and put it up and do other work that is needed and those who have rough lumber bring it along. And those who are too far away send in your means for there will have to be shingles and nails etc. Those sending money send it to Bro. Ely Wagner, St. Louis, Mich., or to John Harn, Merrill, Mich. Most all the saints when you meet them say they wish they could have been to the Grand Junction C. M. But praise the Lord we can yet have a rejoicing time near home, seeing precious souls brought out of darkness into the light of God and poor sinners born into the Kingdom of God. If there ever was a place that a good meeting is needed, it is in this part of the country.

Now let all the children of God be up and doing and lay up treasures in heaven. Those interested in perishing souls do something for the Lord, and let all the community come together on the 4th, and we then can make arrangements for the time when we are to have the camp meeting. Those that are too far off to come and put in a good day, come the eve before and camp on the ground. Remember it is two miles east of St. Louis on Bro. Walter’s farm.

Yours in the love of Christ,

John Harn.

QUESTIONS.

_____

  1. Can a person live justified if he does not obey the call, “Come out of her my people,” when he knows what it means?
  2. Were the translators of the New Testament under king James, inspired to do that work?
  3. Does the words in 2 Peter 1:21, specially apply to them?

A brother.

ANS. TO FIRST. No person can remain justified in the sight of God, when conscious of disobeying his voice in anything. It is true that God does not utterly forsake a child of his, when his life begins to switch off on some line of disobedience. He will still follow such, even sometimes bless them in the good desires they possess, with a view drawing them into his will where they are astray. Disobedience resulting largely from weakness and ignorance, will not be followed by as marked condemnation, as that which is more directly willful. But all disobedience ultimately terminate in spiritual death, and refusing to obey God’s word and come out of sect confusion

Page 3

will forfeit the favor of God, as much as any other disobedience.

ANS. TO SECOND. No. A form of religion is about all they possessed.

ANS. TO THIRD. 2 Peter 1:21, refers to the communication of the scriptures by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit in the prophets, and not to king James’ translation of it. Peter is speaking expressly of how “the prophecy came in old time.” That is of something that took place in ages far back of his day, and not to the translation of the scriptures by king James that occurred over 1500 years after his day. King James’ translation is no more inspired than the many other versions of the scripture accomplished before and since.

MY EXPERIENCE.

_____

Dear Children of God: The dear Lord impresses me to write some of my past and present experience. It seems like a painful duty, but I must obey and the dear Lord has given me victory. Nine years ago the 26th day of last Oct., the Lord wonderfully saved my soul at the home of dear Bro. and Sister Grover. Shortly after I was saved, we moved North and I took Jesus in my soul. I was surrounded by sinners, not a child of God with me. I was only a babe in Christ, but the dear Lord wonderfully strengthened me and gave me power and wisdom. O how I wrestled with God, when my calling was made plain. I cried unto the Lord “I can’t I can’t. I am so weak, ignorant, unlearned,” but the answer came, Woe unto you if you disobey, I have chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things that are mighty. Many other precious scriptures He gave to me, which convinced me he would strengthen me for all he put upon me and I found my blessed Lord true to his word. Time passed on, and the Lord was always with me in power when I went forth to labor for the salvation of precious souls.

Two years ago last fall we moved back to Van Buren Co., and it was here the devil got a strong hold upon me. He made me believe the Lord did not want to use me here like he did in the North, for here were enough of the brethren without useing a woman to preach the gospel. I had about made up my mind to this, when I began to lose power with God and get lean in my soul. About that time some papers fell into my hands which I read and went to help the devil’s work along. 1 attended the Bangor camp meeting, and there I consecrated anew to the Lord. I knew I had lost power with God. I did not have the power I once had, I thought I had lost my sanctification. I had been so deceived of the devil, that I did not know what was the matter, but the dear Lord has so wonderfully shown me just where the trouble lay and the begining of my downfall. The strong hold Satan got was when I decided not to work much more in the vineyard. Now comes the most painful duty to tell, but as I said at the beginning. God has given me the victory to tell it all and the Lord requires it at my hands and I feel it may be a warning to others. For the last two years of my life I have been called to go through many trials, but I still hung on to my God, feeling that the Lord would keep me from falling into the tempters snare, for it seemed to me at times that he was dragging my soul down to hell.

About four months ago Satan, that old deceiver, put it into my head that I could not live a Christian any longer, and through a great temptation I surrendered all and was in the hands of the enemy of my soul. Oh how wretched I was! tongue cannot tell how miserable I felt. It seemed at times as though I would go insane, God permitted sleep to be taken from me; afflictions were laid upon me, a great burden came upon me, at times it would rise up in my throat. Life became a burden to me. Oh how I suffered way off on the desert, away from Father’s house.

On the 24th day of April I fully decided to go back home. Then that old deceiver tried to make me believe Father wouldn’t receive me. Monday the 24th I went to reading God’s word and praying. No aswer came. Tuesday I commenced reading and praying again, oh how I wrestled with God, but still no answer came. Wednesday I commenced praying again, oh how I wished some of the dear children of God would come to my rescue, but the dear Lord did not permit any one to come. Thursday I still continued praying and reading. I read some of Bro. Byrum’s writings in the book of Divine Healing of Soul and Body. I think it helped me some to resist the devil. Friday morning I felt most discouraged, I had almost decided to give up and wait till the next week, and probably some one would come and help me, and had n6 sooner thought this than the words came, “To day is the day of salvation.” I reached on the shelf and took down my Testament, there the Lord showed me some wonderful scripture that just defeated the devil, and showed me that I must walk out on faith alone, regardless of my feeling. I said Lord I will.

“My feelings are given to Father’s control,
His wisdom shall govern my body and soul,
His word is sufficient, I seek not a sign;
I grasp but the promise and Jesus is mine.”

When I arose from prayer I said, Lord the work is done. Still I did not feel any different but I walked right out on faith and took God at his word. I went into the kitchen and in a few moments I felt a slight change come over me. I kept on with my house work but my mind was on Jesus. About four o’clock I sat down and commenced singing, “Help me, dear Saviour thee to own and ever faithful be.” As I was singing I began to feel the windows of heaven were beginning to open. Then that sweet voice whispered, go and pray; I immediately obeyed and as I was praying, oh the blessed witness came. Well I am at home once more,” Home, sweet home,” and clothed in my right mind, and

“Sitting at the feet of Jesus,
O what words I hear him say;
Happy place so near so precious
May it find me there each day.”

I am saved by the power of God.

Yours in the love of Jesus,

Julia R. Crowell.

Visalia, Cal., June 16, 1893.

Beloved in the Lord: We broke camp here the 5th of June. Bro. Davis had to return to Los Angeles. Sister Zumwalk and daughter remained with us; and we had prayer meeting every night through the week until Saturday night, the 9th. Then the Lord opened up the way to go to the foot hills where we are now holding forth the pure truth to about 75 to 100 souls every night, about twelve miles north east of Visalia in a school house. Fourteen were baptized, and devils were cast out. I feel the work is unfinished in Visalia, and pray God to give us a camp meeting in September, on Bro. Byers return to the coast. Amen. Pray for us here.

Yours in the body of Christ,

Dear Brethren in the Glorious Gospel: This leaves us still laboring against all sin. We have just returned from the camp or tabernacle meeting, at Kansas City, Mo., and left the brethren and sisters still laboring for the Lord against the powers of sin of which it seems they are in the chief head quarters, but nevertheless we claimed the victory through him who died for us. We had a glorious meeting last Sabbath, two souls professed to have found the desires of their hearts in the pardon of their sins. Bless the Lord forever!

Yours in the one faith of the gospel, saved from sin and sanctified by a second work of grace.

Dear Saints of the Living God: May God’s richest blessings rest on you all. We just closed a successful meeting of five weeks, at Hollenberg, Kan. It was a grand victory for God. The Lord was with us in power. Sinners were convicted and converted, and believers were sanctified, and much predjudice removed and many friends won to the cause of Christ. Bro. Masters came down from here on Sunday and the Lord used him to his glory. And the Lord sent Bro. Green to assist us the last two weeks. We had good attendance and splendid order all through the meeting. The saints four and six miles west, were there nearly every night, and some of the saints came down from Thompson, Neb.. The saints expect to have a camp meeting at or near Hollenberg, the forepart of August. That will be a good point for a camp meeting. The meeting closed by observing the ordinances of Gods house. Eleven were baptized, and twenty-seven took part in feet washing and the Lord’s supper. A large crowd of people witnessed the solemn scenes. We commenced meeting here last night in the name of Jesus, and expect to stay here as long as the Lord wills. The Lord sent dear Bro. and Sister Fike, from Hope, Kan. here to assist in this meeting. Bro’s Green and Masters, are also here, and we look for great things. Praise his holy name! Amen.

Dear Editors of the Gospel Trumpet: I thank you for sending me a few sample copies of the GOSPEL TRUMPET. I am well pleased with it, being fully in the doctrine of full salvation; having held membership with one of the sectarian churches from the year 1843 to the year 1865, when the light of the Holy Ghost opened my blind understanding, and I saw at once, that I needed a deeper work of grace. I was at that time a passenger conductor on the M. and C. R. R. I was a member of the Masonic Lodge, in this place; and held offices in the church and in the lodge, was also a a zealous partisan, but one Sunday morning I made a full surrender at the family altar, yes, I laid all on the altar, promising God to keep all of the commandments, and do my whole duty, and that I would give up my situation on the rail road and keep the Sabbath day holy. I also gave up my wife, and four little boys into the hands of God. I then knelt down in prayer, and rose to my feet a happy man. I wish here to say that at this time I had several diseases, that I had been a regular smoker for many years; notwithstanding I was dyspeptic, and heart diseased, etc., but praise the Lord, God healed all my diseases and saved me from all my evil habits. I am now, anti-sectarian. Christ has made me free. Praise the Lord; “Where Christ is there is liberty.” So your old brother has the experience of sectarianism for about thirty-two years, and the experience of full salvation about eighteen years. It is not strange therefore that this old crazen man, so called by his pastor, when he left the M. E. church south should be pleased with the GOSPEL TRUMPET. I love to read the testimonies of God’s little ones.

Yours in Jesus,

John H. Aycock.

31 Foxhili, St., Pruicen Park, Liverpool, Eng.

To all my Beloved in Christ Jesus: The dear Lord has put it into my heart to tell you through the GOSPEL TRUMPET a few of the many things he has done for my soul. From a little child, his Holy Spirit seemed to lead me and at the age of fifteen brought me as a poor sinner to the Savior. It was in my own bedroom that God spoke peace to my soul in no uncertain tone, for I felt quite as sure of being born again as ever I was of my natural birth, and never once doubted it since. And in my state of justification God did greatly bless me. Praise his holy name forever! I joined the Wesleyan sect and continued a member until about twelve months ago, when it was the Lord’s will we should remove our residence. It seemed strange to me, as I said to my dear husband many times, It seems impossible for me to decide what church to join, but for the children’s sake, we must settle somewhere. We went frequently to a Baptist chapel near to where baptism was first taught to me as a command, but I was not at all willing to accept it, but shut my eyes to the truth, although it was faithfully preached.

I had been for some time past in business in town, as it had always been my motto — To do with my might what my hands found to do — I worked six days out of the seven, for an earthly master. But God called me out by first afflicting my body and then teaching me that it was impossible to serve God and mammon and he wanted me in his service. Wonderful condescending love, praise his name. He next healed my body and blessed my soul wonderfully, until one day about three months ago a dear aged saint, in his ninetieth year, called to see me and in course of conversation asked me if God had sanctified my soul? My reply was, that I believed so, that he was wonderfully blessing me since leaving business and devoting more time in his service. Oh, but he said, sanctification is a gift and grace of God, just like justification is, and he went on to say, “When the Lord sanctified my soul I shouted glory.” I looked at him and thought he was very near heaven, but did not understand what he meant. However, God’s holy Spirit was with me and striving to be in me and led me again to the throne of the heavenly grace where by his divine help I seemed to take such hold, when it was as if God himself spake the words: “The blood of Jesus Christ, his Son, cleaseth you from all sin. And like the dear old saint, I too shouted for joy.

That joy has never left me since, but every day the Holy Spirit now dwelling in me reveals new light. Praise God forever. Well, some days after, when on my knees God revealed baptism to me. The Holy Spirit had taken all the shrink out and joyfully I took the first opportunity of speaking to the Baptist minister, whose church we had been attending and he kindly promised to baptize me. But God’s ways are not our ways.

A few days after a dear sister in Christ invited me to go with her to a mission hall and hear two brothers from America, and dear saints, you only can imagine the joy that filled my soul when I found their whole theme that night was, sanctification as a second work of grace. During the preaching I could scarcely keep my seat and when the meeting was open for testimony, after establishing my gift with praises to God by confessing it before men, I did thank God that he had a remnant, who were bold for the truth, for I had never heard all the gospel preached before in my life.

The dear brothers announced their intention of having Sabbath School for the children the following Sunday. I could not trespass on your space to tell how God opened the way for me to take part in that school, but have been every Sunday since, greatly blessed in it, and do thank God that he ever introduced me to Bro’s Achor and Henry. Well all this time my baptism was awaiting church ordinance and upon learning I must still wait some time through perhaps my own misunderstanding. Still I could not wait and again I enquired of the Lord about it. The same voice seemed to say again, “Why tarry? There is plenty of water,” and as in a vision the Lord shewed me how it could be done at once over at New Brighton in the sea, where there truly is plenty of water and pointed out his servant who would go with me. Early in the morning I arose to do his bidding and when I made my request known to Bro. Henry his reply was praise the Lord Sister, would you like to go now?

I do feel, dear ones, these are the kind of servants God wants, for NOW seems always to be his accepted time. The following morning Bro’s Achor and Henry, a young sister in Christ and myself went over to New Brighton and there where there was plenty of water Bro. Henry buried me with my Savior. Oh the joy that filled my soul, when I came out of the water, words could not express and on my knees dedicated myself forever to the cross of Christ. The Master shewed me plainly he wished me to help the dear brothers and every night since He has given me health and opportunity to speak a word for him. Of course, dear ones, all the wonderful blessings were not given me without Satan trying to upset everything and my greatest trouble was with my dear husband who thought I was going wrong in my mind. He too was converted, but loved his pipe which he had been a slave to for over twenty years, also chewing tobacco and several things too dear to consecrate, but the Lord did not let me be persecuted long for Bro. Henry and I agreed to ask one night that he may be brought to meeting, stay after, and consecrate all on the altar. Praise God forever, he answered our prayers for the very same night, pipe, chewing and all was laid on the altar and my dear husband’s eyes were opened to the second work of grace.

Well I do desire to praise God for ever for full salvation, although it has taken all the puffs out of my sleeves, curls out of my hair, rings off my fingers and money out of the bank. It is to me a satisfying portion and my eye looks up by faith to treasures in heaven where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where theives do not break through and steal. Needless to add, my dear husband too is in the work, and as we were saying last evening, if God called us to give up our home and go to Central Africa to-morrow we would feel it the greatest honor to obey.

Yours in his service,

Kate Croasdell.

OBEDIENCE.

_____

SPEAK unto Aaron saying, Whosoever he be of thy seed in their generation, that hath any blemish, let him not approach to offer the bread of his God. Lev. 21:17. We find in this text the blemishes spoken of, were of a physical nature, and that no man of the seed of Aaron was allowed to approach the altar to offer sacrifice. How many professors to day are blemished, spiritually, and even many professing holiness, who have blemishes that will keep them out of the kingdom of heaven, unless they are willing to give them up and get right down in humble obedience to the whole will of God, to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and an inheritance among them that are sanctified by faith. Acts 26:18. “Except ye repent and become as a little child, ye cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”

We must be just as harmless as a little child and lay aside all malice, envy, prejudice, hatred, strifes, contentions, evil speaking and everything contrary to the word of God. Thousands of professed Christians are living a careless and unholy life, having a form of godliness, but denying the power. They seem to forget that the scripture says, if ye keep the whole law and yet offend in one point ye are guilty of all; and also that if the righteous scarcely be saved where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?” O dear friends, let us bear in mind that the salvation of the soul is of greater importance than all things else and that there should be but one grand object in this life and it should be far above all other desires, and that is to do the will of God, no matter what we have to sacrifice to do it. All earthly things are but dross compared with eternal life.

When the rich man came to Christ and asked what he might do to inherit eternal life and the Savior told him to sell all he had and give to the poor, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. How many professors to day, who would turn away sorrowful at the same command. Oh dear friends, we had better be a poor despised beggar, afflicted, beaten and persecuted and without a place to lay our heads, than to live in wealth and luxury, and die in our sins. Let us therefore fear lest a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. Heb. 4:1. And yet we see thousands of professing Christians having a form of godliness, going on day by day in a careless unconcerned manner, neglecting their duty in many respects, not willing to accept the truth, and will not live up to the light they have. Yet they seem to believe that in some way they will be admttted into heaven.

Christ warned the people against the leaven of the Pharisees, against the errors and blunders that they made by having their minds conformed to the things of the world. Standing on the streets making long prayers to be seen of men, seeking honor and praise of men. Christ was careful to warn the people against all the errors of the Scribes and Pharisees, that they might avoid falling into the same pitfalls. But alas! how many thousands are falling over the same stumbling stones, who have a name to live, but are dead. The desire for worldly things, worldly pleasures, and worldly honor, to be seen and praised of men, laying up treasures on earth, following after the follies of the world, pride, fashion and the cold dead mockery of making a stylish appearance in society going to shows, theatres, picnics and worldly entertainments; and even opening the doors of their sect houses for shows, festivals, concerts, and worldly carousals, where professed Christians and worldlings are mixed up and enjoying worldly pleasures and say that they have their shows in order to afford a little innocent amusement, and to raise money for the support of the gospel. Thus seeking worldly pay for what they give to the Lord The Bible says freely ye have received, freely give, not grudgingly, but freely. The Lord does not want us to use unjust means in order to get money for the support of the gospel; but what we give to give out of a pure heart, not seeking for worldly compensation.

O dear friends, why will you continue to still follow on in the, old ruts of the Scribes, and Pharisees, when the Savior has so faithfully warned us, of these things: remember he says that except your righteousness, exceed the righteousness, of the Scribes and Pharisees, ye can in no wise be saved. Let us be honest before God. You cannot afford to lose your soul, on account of these trifling things; perhaps many of you know that you are not living as you should, that you are not as meek and humble, as you should be, that you are not willing to forgive your enemies. You perhaps realize this solemn truth, and intend sometime to humble yourself in the sight of God, and get forgiveness, and come out on the Bible line.

Delays are dangerous, if you are not straight with the Lord. Don’t put it off another moment. Thousands have passed suddenly into eternity, who intended to make their calling and election sure.

To day if you will hear his voice, harden not your heart. If you are not fully consecrated, get right down and be completely given up to the Lord, if there be any malice, envy, hatred, jealously, selfishness, pride, covetousness, or a desire for worldly lusts, of any kind, just earnestly pray for God to remove it all, and give you a pure heart, a heart of love and gentleness and charity. Be not overcome of evil but overcome evil with good. If thine enemy hunger feed him, if he thirst give him drink, for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.

The word says if they smite you on one cheek turn to them the other. But how many instead of turning the other are ready to return the blow. If they sue thee at the law and take away thy coat, let them have thy cloak also. But alas! how different is the case with many, who strive and contend for justice. Even brother going to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers. What an awful thing is this spirit of revenge. How unlike the lessons taught, and the examples shown by the meek and lowly Savior. Who when he was reviled, he reviled not again. He was led as a sheep to the slaughter, and like a lamb dumb before his shearers, so opened he not his mouth. — Acts 8:33.

When Christ the Son of God has suffered all manner of shame and persecutions tor our sakes, why should we poor weak worms of the dust, seek for revenge, strive for justice, bite and devour one another. Blessed are ye when men shall revile you and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you, falsely for my sake: rejoice and be exceeding glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. — Matt. 5:11, 12. Yea and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. — 2 Tim. 3:12. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation, for when he is tried he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to them that love him. — Jas. 1:12. Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and the widows in their afflictions, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. Jas. 1:27. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, against such there is no law. — Gal. 5:22, 23.

Eubanks, Ky. June 2, 1893. Dearly Beloved in Jesus: God bless your dear souls with all the fullness of God. Praise God, we have been holding the fort here for Jesus and souls are being captured for God. We are rushing to the front of the battle, with victory in our souls. A few days ago God showed us there would be about twenty more saved soon. Praise God, four already have given up, and night before last, five held up their hands to be prayed for. Others under mighty conviction. Large congregations; some came to meeting filled with whiskey to work for the devil, but the mighty power of God holds them in check, and helps us to pour out the awful truth of God on them. Pray for us that God may use us mightily in bringing many souls out from under the power of darkness into this blessed clear light of God, where we can see eye to eye, speaking the same things in Jesus. From your brothers, saved in Jesus’ blood from all sin, ready to go anywhere the dear Lord leads, and opens the way,

Dear Saints of God: May the richest blessing of God be with you all. Amen. This morning I can praise God for a full and complete salvation in Jesus that keeps me every day. Bless his holy name! On May 24 I came to this place to help Bro. Fly in holding meeting. He came here on May 16 and had been going from house to house to tell the people of salvation. On May 25 we commenced meeting in a Christian meeting house in the name of Jesus, and God truly blessed in preaching his word. The interest of the people was good, and a few souls came out on the Lord’s side. May the dear Lord help them to be true to him. We closed meeting on Sunday night, as Bro. M. A. Fly felt led to go the camp meeting at Grand Junction. I start this morning for Nishnabotna, Mo. to commence German meeting in the name of Jesus. Last night we had a glorious little ordinance meeting. Two souls were sanctified wholly. Glory be to Jesus! And we had a precious time in obeying the commandments of God. May Jesus help his little ones. There are only a few here to walk in the light as Jesus is in the light. I also would ask an interest in the prayers of all the children of God. Any one wishing my service either in English or German meeting, can address me at So. Auburn, Neb.

Your brother in Jesus, saved and sanctified wholly,

Geo. Vielguth.

Dear Beloved Saints and Trumpet Readers: I feel led of God this beautiful morning to report to you of the work of the Lord here in England. First of all I wish to say that the dear Lord is keeping me continually by his almighty power, and I have pefect lasting victory over all the powers of darkness, a peace as calm as a river, a joy no tongue can tell, and a perfect confidence in God. Oh bless his holy name forever and ever! How I do praise God that he so sweetly saves my soul, and young as I am and surrounded by the temptations of the devil, and the allurements of the world, and separated from my dear friends and all that I love, yet I can truthfully say to the glory of God that I am perfectly satisfied with Jesus. He satisfies every desire of my entire being, soul, body, and spirit, praise the dear Lord forever! I am fully trusting him for all things and he is wondrously providing for all my wants.

Well, the past few weeks have been wonderful indeed. When I saw Bro. Achor take the boat for home and knew of the happy meeting he would have at home it did me good to think how happy they would be, but after bidding him good-bye, probably for the last time on earth, and watching the boat as it left, it did seem for a short time that I would surely sink, but Oh! praise God, the dear loving hand that led me here is now holding me up and wiping all tears from my eyes, and I am contented with my lot. Oh, how much there is to be done here Well the Lord is wonderfully working here, and the powers of hell are being defeated. The past week has been a glorious time of refreshing. Since last Sunday evening there have been one soul saved and six sanctified, and several others ask our prayers. As Bro. Achor says we are in the most respectable part of the city, and those that are coming out for God are the upper class people, some business men. Several feel their call to the work of the Lord and are taking an active part in the meeting. One Bro. is a Swedish preacher; he and wife are sanctified and have renounced sectism, and he expects God to use him in the work. Is ready to go to America or Sweden to preach to the Swedish people if the Lord leads and opens up the way. A few weeks ago I baptized a sister in the sea and others will follow Jesus in that divine ordinance soon. I have many warm friends here and several doors are opened for the gospel, and I am very busy day and night. Everything looks very encouraging at present and I am praying God to hasten the dear ones to join me in the work. There is room for two companies already. I believe the Lord will have us open a missionary home here soon,as such is very necessary. I wish to thank all the dear ones who have given means to help in the work here. God bless you all and you surely will not lose your reward; and I assure you that it shall be used to the glory of God. I shall do all in my power to push the work in this country. Dear ones, continue to pray for me, that I may be used much of God, and that I may have wisdom in handling the Word. Also pray for the work here, that it may rapidly increase and many be brought to Jesus. And now may the grace of our Lord Jesus rest upon you forevermore. Amen.

Your unworthy servant,

W. J. Henry.

Dear Saints of God: Favor and peace be multiplied to you all. Since my last report I preached a few times in Stockton, but on account of so much sectarian preaching, and socials, festivals, parties, shows and many other abominations, the people would not come to hear the truth, always having something else to attend. I then revisited Slate; preached a few times, by which the church was strengthened and made to rejoice more and more. Also four dear souls were baptized. Glory be to Jesus, who only is worthy of praise. Then I labored some three weeks, five miles south of Stockton. The Lord worked wonderfully from the beginning, many being convinced from the first of the truth of the blessed evening light. Zion did travail, and brought forth sons and daughters. Satanic powers did shake and fall, and souls were set free from the galling yoke of sectism and all manner of sin. Nine precious souls were buried with Christ by baptism. I also visited the saints at Kensington, Kan. Stayed with them from Thursday night until over Sunday the 28th. Returned to Stockton Monday, accompanied by a brother who also was baptized with the other saints at Stockton. May the divine blessings of our Savior rest upon all the elect of God, chosen through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth, and keep them firm for Jesus. O how I do praise God for his goodness! He has been strength to me in weakness and wisdom in ignorance. Physically I am not strong. Sometimes it would seem I could scarcely stand up long enough to preach, but glory be to Jesus, he is my all in all. By his power I live, yet not I, but Christ liveth in me. For five months, except six nights, have I labored, preaching every night and twice on Sundays. O praise our great Redeemer for his power! Unto the saints where I have been and elsewhere I would say, Remember in weakness did I labor for you night and day. The Son has made you free, so you are free indeed. Stand free from Babylon and all formality hid with Christ in God. In him so must you walk. The ministers of Christ are deprived of many blessings you enjoy, suffering many privations to bring the gospel to you in darkness and sin. Many seem to think there is no harm in using coffee, tea, etc. Unto such I would say it does you no good. Try this plan: Calculate how much your tea and coffee costs you in a year, use it no more, and put your money in a safe place, until the end of the year; then give it to the cause of Christ and help send light to some one else, and see if the Lord will not bless you for it, instead of trying to satisfy some carnal appetite. A great many that seem too poor to take the Trumpet, would find it an easy matter to take it themselves and send it to many others, if they would consecrate their all to the will of God, and lay aside all superfluity. I would love to hear from those saints I have become acquainted with. May I hear from you through the Trumpet. God bless all the chosen of Israel.

Your brother, saved and trusting in Jesus,

W. A. Haynes.

THY TESTIMONIES ARE WONDERFUL.

Dear Saints: To day I can testify to the glory of God that he has sanctified my soul; praise his holy name forever! I never thought it was so blessed, and if had a thousand tongues I could not praise the dear Lord enough for what he has done for me. There is another great thing the dear Lord has done for me; he has healed my body. Praise his holy name! I was troubled with dyspepsia for over ten years, but I now feel nothing of it any more. I just got hold of the Lord’s promise: Whatsoever we ask in his name he will do; so I saw that there was no use to be troubled with the disease any longer. Pray for me that the Lord may keep me faithful up to the end. My wife and one of my daughters are both afflicted, but they do not believe in divine healing nor in sanctification. I want the dear saints to pray for them that the Lord may give them light, as he has given me light. I was converted about twenty-seven years ago, but I did not get the full light until now, and perhaps I would never have found it, had it not been for the GOSPEL TRUMPET. We see by this how God is blessing the work of the dear brethren that publish the GOSPEL TRUMPET. May it encourage everyone that God calls to labor for him, is my prayer.

Your brother saved, sanctified and healed by divine power,

J. A. G. Lettow.

Dear Saints: I am praising God this evening for complete salvation. This is my first testimony for the Trumpet. The dear Lord has been leading me to write my testimony. I love to tell what great things the Lord has done for me. I found my dear Savior precious to my soul. The Lord has saved me and adopted me into the family of God, and one of his blessed promises is that he will in no wise cast me out. Before I was saved I had a great desire for worldly pleasures, but I can now say, The world has now no charms for me since Christ has set me free. Before I was saved I thought the saints preached the word too strong, but when I went to searching the word of God I found out it was quick and powerful, and sharper than any two- edged sword. In 1 John 2:15-17, it reads: “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him, for all that is in the world, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father but is of the world; and the world passeth away and the lust thereof, but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever.” I want you all to pray for me. I praise God I did heed his call before too late.

Your sister saved and trusting in Jesus,

Emma Switzer.
