The Haven of Rest.

_____

My soul in sad exile was out on life’s sea,
So burdened with sin and distress,
Till I heard a sweet voice saying, Make me your choice.
And I entered the “Heaven of Rest.”

CHORUS.
I have anchored my soul in the “Haven of Rest,”
I’ll sail the wide seas no more;
The tempest may sweep o’er the wild stormy deep,
Jesus I’m safe evermore.

I yielded myself to his tender embrace,
And faith taking hold of the Word,
My fetters fell off and I anchored my soul, —
The “Haven of Rest” is my Lord.

The song of my soul, since the Lord made me whole,
Has been the Old Story so blest,
Of Jesus’ who’ll whosoever will have
A home in the “Haven of Rest.”

How precious the thought that we all may recline,
Like John the beloved and blest,
On Jesus’ strong arm, where no tempest can harm,
Secure in the “Haven of Rest”

O come to the Savior, he patiently waits,
To save by his power divine;
Come anchor your souls in the “Haven of Rest,”
And say, “My Beloved is mine.”

__________

FEELINGS.

_____

THE Lord has wonderfully blessed my soul in the study of the Word on this subject, and as some may be troubled as I have been, it may be a benefit to them also, and it is a blessed privilege to serve in the family of God.

Oh that every one who attempts to instruct precious souls in the way of life would realize how much they need the wisdom of God, and look to him for it in faith. Ofttimes a few careless thoughts expressed vaguely touch a point upon which a dear one has been severely tried, and instead of being a help are just the reverse, causing months or years of uncertainly or disappointment.

How often have we heard the expression at the altar, “Oh never mind your feelings, just believe God.” Now there is one way in which we are to obey this instruction, and several ways in which we are not to use it. A soul coming to God for the pardon of sin should have some very strong feelings. He should realize that he is a great sinner, and that he cannot save himself; that there is only one who can save him, therefore he determines to give up sin and spend his life in the service of God. Now if these feelings are not as strong as they should be, by asking God to strengthen them, and trusting for it, he will grant it, and the soul be made conscious of guilt and condemnation; and the will strengthened to a full determination to yield to a life of godliness, a whole hearted service to God. Psa. 51:17 and 34:18, also Luke 18:13 and 14 express very strong emotions or feelings of a convicted soul.

Now at this point the dear one may be taught not to look to some extatic or joyful emotion as a surety that he is born again; but to accept the promises of God as a more secure assurance. As faith grasps with unwavering confidence the promises of pardon, a knowledge that the soul is in submission to God, and past sins are forgiven and peace reigns, fills the soul with thanksgiving and praise. Surely a new born soul has blessed feelings, and are to be highly appreciated as the gift of God, and encouraged to a life of deep devotion that they may be strengthened to the glory of God.

Entire consecration of soul and body is taught very clearly in Rom. 6:13, 16; also 1 Cor. 6:19, 20; Now if a perfect surrender is made it must include our feelings; that is, we must always live for the glory of God whether it brings joyful or pleasant feelings or not. For instance, God may require us to leave a happy home, dear family, plenty of means to supply every need, to go forth among cold hearted strangers without any prospect of wants supplied only as hearts are moved by the blessed Spirit of God. At first thought, or as we look to earthly things it requires much self-denial, and were our feelings consulted, home would hold us by its endearing attractions; but when self and feelings are consecrated obedience is ours and results are God’s.

Now let us look at some of the different emotions or feelings given to a saved soul. First of all is submission to God. Is it not delightful to have the rebellion and contrariness taken away, and in its stead holy agreement with all God has planned for us? Surely each of our souls cries, Amen, bless our God!

Then which would we choose, pride or humility? Even in the words is a clear conception of the great difference, and we think of the gaudy and strutting peacock as the type of one, and the dear little modest violet as the expression of the other, and the cry of our souls is, Oh, “clothe me with humility,” Oh, the blessedness of being nothing and Christ all in all. Sometimes we hear one saint wishing some other one was more humble. Did you ever tell them how they could attain it? Perhaps they are just waiting to be taught and will rejoice as I did that it is by simple faith, just as we understand our need.

Could there be a more comforting state of heart than faith in God? In every circumstance or condition to see the sustaining, guiding and overruling hand, confident all things are working together for good to those who love the Lord. Oh the love of God! How we wish for words to express its blessedness! Pure natural love is elevating, ennobling, refining and controlling in every place of life. But God’s love is higher, deeper and broader, as the divine is greater than the human; and as it is shed abroad in the heart by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us, every need of the soul seems to be supplied, and certainly is, as God is love. Then, dear ones, let us enjoy to our entire satisfaction the mighty love of God, and quench not the Spirit when he would lead you to behold wondrous things in the great expanse of eternal God love. Fathom it more and more, dear Christians, still it is unmeasured. Have your hearts full, yet enjoy it more fully as each day passes. Now we are brought where gratitude fills our souls and thanksgiving and praise well up from its depths in adoration to the gracious giver of all good. How much more blessed is it to enjoy each and every gift as a token of love from our Father instead of repining for what we might have.

Let storms of persecution, waves of trial beat against us, Christ has spoken, “Peace, be still,” and as a mighty river it courses its way in our hearts and through our lives while we yield in obedience and faith to the God of peace. Then comes the “joy of the Lord,” no myth, no mystery, but a complete inexpressible, ever satisfying pleasure. Come, ye pleasure seekers, and find that which can satisfy the soul. Not a joy that has an alloy, but pure and elevating, and of which the soul never tires as it comprehends it more and better.

Shall we speak of liberty? That which men think they have attained when their nation bows in submission to no other nations, and when they as individuals can do as they please. We will glory in the cross of Christ by which we are brought into complete surrender to the God of heaven, whose kingdom rules in our hearts, and every thought is brought into obedience to Christ. Yes, made free from sin and at perfect liberty to serve God in the beauty of holiness. Liberty from Satan’s service, from his chains, bands, lethargy, wiles and ways. Do we value our liberty that was obtained at so great a cost, the death of the Son of God? if so, be dilligent each one in his sphere to hold up Christ as a perfect Savior.

And so we are brought into blessed fellowship with the great Creator, and he has bidden us to feast with him. Rev. 3:20. And it is as real a feast as if it was spread before our natural eyes. Many dear souls love to be in services where the gospel is preached and sung and feel the blessed Spirit of God, but when services are over they lose this enjoyment, for they have not comprehended the blessedness of fellowship with God in the secret closet in Bible study, and moment by moment when busy with the duties of life. Each of us may sink deeper in God’s will and draw more satisfaction from sweet intercouse with our risen Lord.

There are many more blessed emotions of the Spirit that we cannot speak of now, but may these lines be blessed to the comfort and help of some who have not enjoyed as much of the religion of Jesus Christ as is their privilege.

There is one danger that must be mentioned in connection with this subject. Many are looking only to some joyful feeling and Satan gives them lightness. Analyze each joy and see from whence it springs. Many are shouting happy who are not walking in obedience to God’s word, but think they are saved because they can shout. So can politicians and rowdys, or any one filled with enthusiasm. “Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion, for great is the Holy One within you.” This explains why God’s children may praise him aloud. Because he doeth so many wonderful things for them through his mighty salvation. Knowing we have his glorious presence let no one keep you from enjoying the kingdom set up in the heart. In the love of God, your sister,

Jennie C. Rutty.

HOW MAN’S PREACHERS DO.

(Copied from Franklin (Pa.) EVENING NEWS, Apr. 17,1893.)

“The Erie Presbytery closed at Greenville Tuesday. Rev. W. F. Shannon, of Franklin was examined and admitted to the presbytery. He is fully grounded in the matter of scholastic and theological preparation. He is a prominent and effective minister, and the presbytery is strengthened by his acception.”

Mark, he is not asked the question, Are you saved? nor, Are you prepared by the Holy Ghost to preach Christ to the saving of souls? No, no! he is prepared to join the presbytery after man’s wisdom, and to preach the wisdom of this world, which is foolishness with God. Oh what mockery, what idolatry to worship sects, and study and preach to build up presbyteries and sects!

HOW GOD’S PREACHERS DO.

1 Cor. 2:1. I came not with excellency of speech, or of man’s wisdom.

2. I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

3. I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.

4. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit, and of power. 5. That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. 6. Not the wisdom of this world. 7. but we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery.

10. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit. 12. We have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God. 13. Which things we speak not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth.

14. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness unto him; neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

“Scholastic” preparations will fit man for the “Presbytery,” but not for the church, nor for saving men. Theological preparation will not give the Spirit nor the power, for the Word says, “Ye shall receive power after that the Holy Spirit is come upon you.” That is much different from the unsaved, popular preacher, learned in man’s wisdom, and not of Christ. Our Savior said, “Learn of me, for I am meek and lowly.” The sectarian preacher is rated according to his excellency of speech after man’s wisdom.” To such the Holy Ghost is foolishness, and they cannot discern the “body of Christ.” because this is spiritually discerned. They only speak “in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth.” And the “Kingdom of God is not in word but in power.” And the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God, but God’s wisdom is foolishness to the vain scholastic sect preachers, who preach for hire and to build up sects and strengthen presbyteries. May God help all who want to be saved to escape from fallen Babylon.

__________

UNITED IN JESUS.

_____

We have received a letter from a brother who has separated from the U. B. sect, having seen the evil of heresies, who says, “I would love to see you people, and the People’s Church of Omaha, the Non-Sectarian Evangelical Church of Lincoln, Neb. and the World’s Missionary Association all united. As we believe alike, it would surely be to the glory of God that we unite. If we cannot, then we are also sectarians and carnal. I beseech you to consider this matter prayerfully. We could have a conference of ministers to confer on this and other important matters.” Sincerely yours in the unity of Christ,

F. W. Scott.

Answer. We love the way our brother subscribes himself; i. e., “In the unity of Christ.” Amen. My brother, we also live in the unity of Christ; in what the early Fathers called “The harmony of God;” what the apostle denominates “The unity of the Spirit, in the bond of peace,” and further describes as “One body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.” Eph. 4.

But Christ himself gives us the standard of this heavenly unity in his touching prayer for the church in Jno. 17: “That they all may be one, as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us.” “That they may be made perfect in one.” “One even as we are one.” This is the unity of Christ. In it my brother says he lives. So do we. Thus we are one as Christ and the Father are one. Holy people need not to unite, but are already “baptized by one Spirit into one body.” “If we cannot unite we are vet sectarians and carnal,” says our brother. We say more: IF WE ARE NOT UNITED, we — or some of us — are yet sectarians and carnal. “For both he that sanctifieth, and they who are sanctified” — should all unite? Nay, but — “ARE ALL OF ONE.” Heb. 2:11. In a conference worked up union, there would still lack unity. And such a confederation would be another heresy, a faction, a creature earth-born. Whereas the church, which is the Lamb’s wife is the holy Jerusalem which came down from God out of heaven. When Christians join themselves together in some association, or the “People’s Church,” it is not God’s church, but another sect. Any compact that a man can live outside of, and yet be a Christian, is a sect, a heresy. The same is true of any organization, that a man can be in and yet be a sinner or hypocrite. God’s church is the body of Christ, outside of it is no Christian, and in it is no sinner. Men’s churches are the result of men organizing or joining themselves together. “The church of God,” and there is only “one body,” is the result of men and women being joined to the Lord. MEN’S UNIONS are the result of men’s deliberations, and efforts to conform to one- another by adopting some creed. GOD’S UNITY is the result of his perfect salvation, whereby men are brought into perfect harmony with God himself. When we are fully in harmony with God and all his will, and in perfect holy fellowship with all Heaven, we need not join ourselves together, but are blessedly joined by the love of God, the bond of perfectness, and we are one in all the truth of God. Amen.

Dear Saints: We are glad to report victory in our soul, though we stand alone in this wicked city. We know that Jesus is our strong arm of support. Praise the Lord! We know no defeat, even if we are to remain here, and suffer out our three score and ten years; for we know we are saved in Jesus now. It will soon be four years since we came here. We have been sowing the seed, some have fallen upon good ground, and some upon the stony ground, which had not depth of soil. Now the field is broad and awaits the harvest time. O who will come and help to gather in the sheaves! We have had some severe drawbacks in the work of the Lord upon this field of battle, but we yet hope and pray the Lord to send unto us the right one, and grant unto us the holy boldness to go forward with renewed zeal, and that of knowledge. My mission is to do the little things. Yours in Christ,

John J. Bentley.

Dear Trumpet Readers and all the Saints of God: I think it would be to the glory of God for me to write my testimony. It is one year ago to day since I first heard the true gospel preached by brother Otto Bolds. He measured me by the word and I was found wanting. Although I had been a professor of religion for twenty years, belonging to the Missionary Baptist sect, I saw I was nothing but a sinner in the sight of God. I got to the Lord and straightened up with him. “I thought on my ways, and turned my feet to thy testimonies. I made haste, and delayed not to keep thy commandments.”

I had followed the filthy habit of using tobacco for forty-five years, and gave that up without any trouble when I became convinced it was a sin. Praise the Lord! I have found a Savior that is able to save from all sin. Pray for me that I may go through on the Bible line.

“HOLINESS unto the Lord.” Zech. 14:20.

“FOLLOW peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.” Heb. 12:14.

THE reason people fight holiness is because they are strangers to the Holy One — Jesus Christ, and because their deeds are evil, and they love to walk in darknes rather than light.

HOLINESS means to be holy — pure in heart — to be God-like — free from sin — Christian perfection — pure even as He is pure — to walk uprightly as Christ walked — to shun even the appearance of evil — to follow in the footsteps of the Lord Jesus — to obey the whole word of God.

DID you ever hear a preacher teach that it is impossible for a person to live free from sin in this life? If you did, that man is a stranger to Jesus Christ, and ignorant of his Word, and is a messenger of Satan. The devil himself would not try to pull down the standard of salvation lower than that. Shame on the one — especially a preacher who would dare to assert such a thing, and at the same time claim to be a child of God! The Bible says, 1 Jno. 3:8, “He that committed! sin is of the devil.” “He that is born of God doth not commit sin.”

SISTER MARY HOUSKEEPER writes that her address, until further notice, will be 3443, Cottage Grove Avenue, Chicago.

THE German brethren are now at workgetting the German paper ready, which, the Lord willing, will be ready to send out by the first of the year. Send all business letters to this office, and all letters for publication to the Editor, Bro. Fred L. Hahn, 466-16th St., Milwaukee, Wis.

As we are entering the names of our subscribers into a new subscription book it was necessary for us to revise the list, and have sent notices to about 2,000 whose time has expired. In these notices we gave the amount due on back subscription. Some have failed to read the amount correctly, where it is marked 12 or 15 cents they have read it so many dollars. In these notices we stated that if the parties did not have the money at present, and yet desired the paper to let us know and we would gladly continue it; or, if destitute and unable to pay that we would place their names on the free list, and wherein any mistakes have been made we will gladly rectify the same. We also sent notices to about 800 who are on the free list to know whether they want it continued or not. We are glad to hear from so many; trust all who have not yet written will write us at once.

QUESTION.

_____

Is it impossible for a convert to be sanctified wholly, before he feels the carnal mind? SISTER EMMA GEORGE.

No, it is not absolutely impossible. Two things are needed. First, a child of God must have sufficient spiritual knowledge of the way of salvation to know it is God’s will and order, and his privilege to be wholly sanctified, made perfectly pure in the sight of God. Second, he must have a real conviction of his need and his duty to be thus cleansed, that conviction may be produced by the conscious stir, and actual manifestation of the old nature. Or, it may arise from an inward sense of the old man’s presence, without his moving, along with a knowledge of the Word, which recognizes his presence in the first love, and also demands his death.

A TRANSFORMED ANGEL OF LIGHT.

_____

No one better answers the description of Satan’s transformed agents in 2 Cor. 11:14, 15, than one, Mr. A. M. Raper, who has evidently changed his name lately to A. M. Reaper. He went out from Ind. some ten years ago, abandoned his wife. The only thing he had to complain of to us at that time was that she was proud and worldly. Since that time he has traveled with other women, and now claims to be married. In him Satan is cloaked in a very humble and sanctimonious mein. He is radical against sectism, anti-ordinance, but the latter doctrine he keeps concealed when to his advantage. He babels off the millennium, and makes bold predictions. In a leaflet headed, “The time of the End,” bearing his revised name, which he sent the Lord’s workers in the Rescue Home in Danville, Ill., he says: “We believe according to the Bible that the last seven years of this age * * * began in the Spring of 1892, and that during these last seven years, nine-tenths of the human race will perish by war, plagues, famine, pestilence, earth quakes and hail.” “Then the curse will be removed from off the earth, the mountains leveled, the deserts watered, and blossom as a rose, and the earth become a garden of the Lord, and the ONE-TENTH who are brought through the ‘great tribulation,’ and the resurrected whole house of Israel (Eze. 37), and all the resurrected children will repeople the restored earth (Acts 3:21), and the Lord Jesus with his bride will reign here a thousand years.”

“But I rejoice that there is a beautiful city of God 1500 miles square, sparkling like a diamond, clear as crystal, brighter than the noon day sun, the residence city of the bride company, which will hang in mid-heaven during the thousand years, visible to those on earth.”

Here is millennial babel, loud sounding confusion. “The Lord Jesus with his bride will reign here (on the restored earth) a thousand years.” The new Jesrusalem will be suspended in mid-heaven during that thousand years, and be the residence city of the bride company. Such are the vain janglings and contradictory nonsense of those, in general, who have been deceived by Satan into the millennium delusion. Scarcely any two teach the same theory. And more or less all contradict themselves. It is nothing else but a mess of reckless high sounding, and flesh-pleasing speculations. Men and women of God are serious and know what they are teaching; only men who are destitute of the Spirit of God will, like the above false teacher, fabricate a theory in one paragraph and in the next knock it down or teach the reverse. In one paragraph he has the literal earth for the territory of Christ’s thousand years reign, with literal Jerusalem as the capital. In the next it is located in the New Jerusalem, and that hung up in mid- heaven, only visible here on earth.

Where in the Bible does Mr. Raper find that within the next four and a half years nine-tenths of the earth’s population will perish? How does he and a hundred other blind guides know that this earth will last just 6000 years? How does Mr. Raper know that hell is located “inside of this earth,” and that it is “5000 miles across it?” All these things he asserts with positiveness as if he had visited and surveyed that bottomless pit. We warn all God’s children to give no place to such false teachers and heretical literature.

ETERNAL LIFE.

_____

There are a class of professors, and others, that think if they merely believe on the Son of God they are saved eternally; they can go on in all kinds of folly and false doctrines; yet some way or some how, they are saved any way because they believe that Jesus is the Christ. In this they are deceiving themselves or God’s word is not true. Let God be true and every man a liar. Rom. 3:4. Even if they have been truly converted they have to keep fulfilling the conditions of the word to keep salvation. It means so much to follow in the footsteps of the blessed Master.

We often hear the following passage quoted in support of “Once in grace always in grace:” “I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” Jno. 10:28. Christ in this instance is trying to show the Jews what it is to be a true believer. He says in verse 27, My sheep hear my voice, and follow me. These are the conditions: hearing his voice, and following him. When these conditions are met it is impossible for any thing to come between the soul and its God. There are many professors that are destitute of life because they are following men and their voices, instead of knowing “thus saith the Lord.

Christ says in Mat. 7:26, “Whosoever heareth these words of mine and doeth them, I will liken unto a wise man who built his house on a rock: and the rains descended and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, and it fell not; because it was founded upon a rock.” Dear souls cannot be moved if they are keeping and doing the sayings of Jesus. They alone have life eternal.

But look upon the other picture, it is a sad one: “Every one that heareth these sayings of mine and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man that built his house on the sand (false doctrines), and it fell.” We see the Savior only recognizes two classes, those that hear his voice and follow him, and those that do not. In the same chapter verse 21 he says not every one that says to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he that doeth the will of my Father in heaven. And St. Paul says in 1 Thes. 4:3, “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication” (spiritual adultery), that awful sin God denounces so often in his word, which is untrueness to him after professing to be of him. Sanctification is the act that establishes the believers heart, makes Christ and his people one. “Bone of his bone, and flesh of his flesh.” Oh how few understand the sweet tender relation existing between Jesus and his church. So we see from his word it is his will that we should be holy, and it is only those that do his will that shall enter in.

We find in 1 John 5:1, “Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God,” and then in 1 Jno. 3:9 we find the fruit of the true believer, “Whosoever is born of God does not commit sin.” Yet in the face of all this we hear professed Christians say, those too that sit in the uppermost seats in sectism, “It is impossible to live without sin.” Giving God the lie, denying the efficiency of the blood of our Redeemer. This is the anti-christ that is set up in the hearts of men and women to day; for the word says, “His name shall be called Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins.” “For this purpose was the Son of God manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.” And so if it is impossible to live without sin we have no Christ.

Page 3

Denying the power of Jesus is denying him. This must be the class that Peter referred to when he said there are false teachers among you, who shall bring in damnable heresies [a heresy is always something that is not taught in the word], even denying the Lord that bought them.

Jesus says, Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away; and every branch, that beareth fruit he purgeth (purifies) it that it may bear more fruit. Jno. 15:2. Then we find ip verse 6 that the branches that are taken away are burned. So when we see professed Christians that do not bear spiritual fruit we may know they have never been in the vine, or they have been taken away. St. Paul says in Eph. 5:9, “The fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness and truth.” Goodness, which is that quality or disposition which is contrary to malice and wickedness. Righteousness, which is opposed to injustice, whereby one becomes hurtful to another through deceit, covetousness, oppression and violence. Truth, which is opposed to errors, lies, heresies, hypocrisy, both in common affairs and in matters of religion.

Right along this line we have other passages showing after people have been of God they are cast away for want of trueness to him. We find in Eze. 33:18, When the righteous turneth from his righteousness and committeth iniquity, he shall even die thereby. St. Paul says in Heb., “It is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, and have tasted of the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, if they shall fall away, to renew them again to repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.” These persons had surely been converted.

The Word says in Rev., “Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.” Christ says. Because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold; but he that endureth to the end shall be saved. Showing plainly that some had the love of God, but had fallen away.

Then we have in Heb 3:6, “But Christ as a son over his own house, whose house are we if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.” In the parable of the sower we see how different ones receive the word. But they on the rock are they which when they receive the word with joy, and they have no root, which for awhile believe, and in time of temptation fall away. And that which fell among thorns are they, which when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. But that on the good ground are they, which in an houest and good heart, having received the word, keep it and bring forth fruit with patience.

The difference here is, the latter hear the word and keep it; the others hear the word and do not keep it, and the sure result is, they fall away. And we have, “Thus saith the Lord,” for it.

There are other passages we might give to refute this false doctrine of ‘‘Once in grace, always in grace.” But we have given enough to convince any honest soul that we have to measure up to God’s word to be saved and to keep saved.

When that great day comes, the day of all days, the judgment day, the great question will be, Have we kept the word, or have we not? Will we hear the awful words, “Depart from me, ye that work iniquity; I never knew you.” Or shall we be those that have done his will and kept his sayings, and receive the well done, “Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” “There is one that judgeth you; the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge you at the last day.”

Dear Brethren: Since my last report, Bro. Miller and I held a meeting at Hopeville, and at the John Carrell school house. After Bro. Miller left for Ohio I continued the meeting until Sunday night, Nov. 18. No consecrations at the two last named places. People will hear and say it is the Word, but will not obey as the Word is too sraight; it will not let them cling to their idols. That is why they do not walk out on God’s promises. To night I will commence a meeting in the Ebenezer M. E. house of worship, not knowing how soon the door will be shut against me. We have large congregations and pretty good order. People are anxious to hear, and conviction is upon them. Yours in Him,

To the Saints of God, Greeting: Bro. Riggle reported the McConnellsburg meeting. Bro’s Riggle and Kilpatrick went north, and Wife and I went to the Upper Strasburg grove meeting, which commenced Aug. 16, and continued eight days. The spirit of conviction was upon the people, and many admitted the truths of the body of Christ. None yielded, but much truth was gotten upon the people, which, we doubt not, will eventually bring forth fruit. From there we went to Amberson’s Valley, and held a grove meeting. There were some consecrations for heart purity. The saints were edified and much good was done. Two were buried in baptism. Held an eight day’s meeting in Horse Valley, where much good was done in bringing harmony among the saints where Satan had caused some division. Dear saints, pray God to send Holy Ghost teachers to that part of Pennsylvania.

The Lord called us to the Pacific coast, where we arrived the 11th inst. Found the church alive, holding three meetings on Lord’s day, and every evening, and upon the streets. We will work in the city and surrounding country until the Lord orders otherwise.

Dear Saints of the Living God: We can still report victory in our souls over all the powers of the evil one. Our few days with the church of West Monterey resulted in much good. Two came to the altar and both claimed the promise. In the morning before we took train for Rimerton we heard of the illness of one whom we felt moved by the Spirit to visit. With dear Bro. Keefer we went to the home of the sick one and had prayer. God blessed the dear one and saved her soul. We went to Rimerton and held a few meetings, where quite an interest was manifested; two asked for prayers. We came back and remained over the Lord’s day, 18 inst., with the church at West Monterey, and Monday came to Butler and met with some of the little ones there, which did us good to see the few that are left steadfast in the truth of the gospel. The Lord willing, we will commence meeting in the name of Jesus about Dec. 5, in the saints’ meeting house two miles west of Teegarden, and hold one or two other meetings, then return to Canada and stop off in Erie Co., Me Lallen Cor’s. Expect to get to Canada about Feb. 15, and labor in that great field, where laborers are very few. We ask the prayers of all God’s people that we may be kept very humble. Yours for God,

To all the Elect of God, Greeting: Some time has passed since we last greeted you through the Trumpet, but we have been continually in the battle, with victory in the name of Jesus our leader. Our last meeting was near Slate, Kan., where the power of God held perfect sway from first to last. Sectism is indeed twice dead, and plucked up by the roots. There were several consecrations, mostly for pardon; eight were baptized, and more to follow. Our dear Bro. John Parhm, who, two years ago when a sinner, was taken sick of a fever, and having heard the truth was convicted of its reality, and sent for me to come and pray for him. Complying with the request I went in Jesus’ name. Following the requirements in the word of God, he was not only forgiven of his sins, but was healed instantly; but soon after he became reckless again, growing worse and more hardened, until the Lord permitted a stroke of paralysis to come upon him. After this he become awakened to the realization, of his condition, and believed it to be sent on him because he did not obey the command, “Go, and sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon thee.” He repented and God. truly forgave him again. He can now move around somewhat, and we trust will soon be whole once more. Let the saints there give him all the help and consolation necessary to encourage him to exercise faith in God, and let sinners take warning of this example. Bro. Geo. Veilguth came and staid a few days, by whose presence we were refreshed. We observed the ordinances of the Lord’s house on Tuesday evening of the thirteenth, in which twenty-five took part. God bless the saints in that part, and keep them true for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

Yours in the fellowship of Christ,

W. A. Haynes and Wife.

Dear Saints of God: I feel led to write my testimony for the first time to the glory of God. I praise the Lord for a full salvation from all sin. Jesus has saved me and sanctified me wholly by a second definite work of grace, and keeps me continually. Praise the Lord! I do praise him for sending his flying messengers here with the pure gospel, and that I heard his voice calling me out of Babylon. I am in the one body, the church of the living God. I have been in the sects many years, and could not get satisfied in there, for the doctrine is, “We cannot live free from sin.” But praise the Lord, his Word declares we can, and I am determined, God helping me, to lift up the standard of holiness. Pray for me that I may be kept faithful, also for my family. Your sister,

Dear Saints: We are unable to tell what the Lord has done for us. He has saved our souls and fills us with his love. We had thought we were Christians for about eight years, but we were like Paul writes to the Romans in seventh chapter. But thank the dear Lord, that two years ago this last summer we heard the full salvation preached, and the Lord accepted my wife and I, and we are a happy family. The Lord is our physician and we have not taken any medicine since we belonged fully to the dear Lord. If we live a holy life according to the Bible we will, surely be saved when we die, and already now are saved. We have four children, and the two older ones have asked the dear Lord for a new heart and have received it. We live out in the woods where there are no Christians for some distance. Pray for us that the dear Lord may send us a holy minister here to preach for us, and that many may be saved. Your brother and sister sanctified and kept by the power of God,

I do praise God for the blessed truth I heard preached about eight months ago. I would like for some true minister to come in this part and preach the pure gospel. I felt led to write my testimony for the first time, and write it to the glory of God. I have been saved about three years, and the Lord took the tobacco, whiskey and all filthy habits from me, and has made a new man out of me; and he will make a new man out of every one if they will let him. Praise his holy name! I will write and tell what the Lord did for me. One night about eight o’clock I was bitten by a trantler, and before I could get to the house was very sick and in much pain. The people told me if I did not get a doctor I would die, and I told them the Lord would heal. I had spasms about eight hours, and they said they were going to get a doctor. Two doctors came, and they said they were twelve hours too late. They held a council and went home. So I asked my wife and sister to pray for me, and we got the witness of the healing. They sent a telegram to Pittsburg, Kan. to a brother, and about the time he got word I began to get better, and when he came we all had prayer and I got up. Praise the Lord! I am well to day, and I give God all the praise. So, dear saints, if we testify of the healing power we should stand firm in a test. Your brother saved,

Dear Beloved Saints of God: I feel it to the glory of God to write a few lines to let you know I enjoy salvation. I have given all up for Jesus, and am sanctified and healed by the power of God, although I am weak in body yet, but I know the work is done. I must confess I believe I was not as obedient as I should have been. Praise God this morning for making a way to get to camp meeting last June with the saints in Michigan, as I was a great sufferer for twenty-three years, especially over nine years without any relief; four long years bedfast, and had a real good doctor who did all he could to relieve me and heal me, but without help, as I was not to be healed by earthly help. Praise God! he made a way so I could be healed by the power of God. While I was sick about two years ago some of the saints came to visit me and prayed for me, and I found I was not as clear in my soul as God wanted me, and I gave up all. Oh thank God for sending them to visit a poor sick woman like me. Some others visited me lately and taught me from his Word, and I have by faith received the healing, and ask your earnest prayers. Pray also for the salvation of my family. I have many hard trials, but God is on my side, and these trials of faith shall be more precious than gold. Your sister in Christ,

Greeting to all the Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus. It is so seldom that any of God’s children write from this part of the country, I feel led by the Holy Spirit to give my testimony to help some one along the line, and to the glory of God. Wife and I were born and raised in Norway; brought up under the yoke in the Lutheran State Church. We have never joined ourselves to the sect in these eight years. We have been offered free admission twice, but refused; yet we have always accepted the preaching, and held Luther up as a little savior, have believed that infant sprinkling was the mode of baptism, have always believed that alterens sacrament was to be served for the forgiveness of sins, and that feet washing was just meant for the apostles.

Last year God used a wonderful means to bring us to think about our soul’s salvation. We began to forsake our old ways, but never found that blessed sweet joy and peace that we now possess. I went to the minister of my sect, but got nothing. We lived up to all the light we had for six months. So God, in his wisdom sent a dear brother to preach the blessed evening light. Well, I knew this was the Bible truth, just what we wanted, but, nevertheless, I and many others found fault with it because it would not correspond with our old sect. I tried to prove some scriptures on the commandments, but could not. The result was, for the first time, I heard His pure gospel, and accepted it in its purity. I got blessedly saved and sanctified through Jesus Christ, who cleansed me from all sin. We were baptized, and received the witness of obeying God’s command.

To the honor and glory of God, I can testify to his divine healing power. God is mighty to fulfil his promises to all who will trust him and believe, and are willing to give up all false teaching and come out free, in the beauty of holiness. Blessed be God! He saves his people to the uttermost. My wife has had malaria more or less for three years. Three months ago she could not turn over in bed. Three of God’s little ones who were present offered a prayer of faith, and as soon as they got up from prayer, she jumped out of bed shouting praises to God for his healing power, and she had never felt better in her life. I have been healed twice myself; once of a severe fever, and again of catarrh of the throat of ten years’ standing. Glory be to his holy name forever! God be with you all. Your brother,

M. Bue.

WALKING IN THE LIGHT.

_____

Dear Saints of God: I feel that the Lord wants me to write my testimony for his glory, “For he has done great things for me, whereof I am glad.” Praise his holy name! How well I remember leaving my home in the country one morning some years ago, to come and live in this city, for the purpose of learning a trade. Up to that time I had been moral and religious, well brought up, and would not for anything miss attending a place of worship on Sunday. I had a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge; and being ignorant of God’s righteousness, went about establishing my own righteousness. Like thousands of young men placed in similar circumstances, with good intentions, but trusting only to the arm of flesh to keep me, I soon yielded to temptation, and almost before I realized it was drawn right in the whirlpool of money making, our motto in business being, Get a profit honestly if you can, but whatever you do, make money.

“What shall it profit a man, if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?” O this unhappy desire to become rich, which we see in these last days, stalking like a demon through the length and breadth of the land, “drowning men in destruction and perdition! for “the love of money is the root of all evil.” So it proved in my case. I continued wandering farther away from God till I became almost skeptical, spending his holy day in pleasure, theatre going, bicycle riding, etc.; but none of these things gave me rest of soul; there was always that aching void in my being, which the broken cisterns of this world could not fill. I used to think I was differently constituted than other people, often cursing the day of my birth. O the untold misery of those years. I certainly had a vague idea that if I forsook my sins and turned to God I should have peace and rest, but the devil was busy suggesting something like this, Look what it will cost you to become a Christian; wait till a more convenient season.

At last I could stand it no longer, the suspense was terrible. I felt so impressed to turn from my evil ways and seek God with all my heart whatever the cost might be. The words came home to me like thunder, “Choose you this day whom ye will serve,” Josh. 24:15, and as I stood behind the counter of the shop in which I was working I decided then and there to cease from sin and follow God. Soon afterwards I saw by faith, Jesus hanging on the cross for my sins, “He loved me and gave himself for me,” and the burden of my heart had rolled away.

“I came to Jesus as I was,
Weary and worn and sad;
I found in him a resting place,
And he has made me glad.”

I began to tell people around of the joy that filled my soul, and wondered at the time how it was they were so indifferent. I continued to live up to all the light God gave me. I found the preacher at the church I recently attended was unconverted, so I left there, and wandered about till I found the place where I got the most food for my soul; even then I saw so much hypocrisy and unreality in the churches it disgusted me. The devil suggested that the times had changed, and God’s children were not expected to live and act as they did in the times of the apostles. I searched the scriptures and found nothing to warrant such a change, and continued to believe God though it made every body else a liar.

About nine months after my conversion I saw clearly that the body of sin was not destroyed. At times the carnal mind got the best of me in various ways, lust, temper, love of pleasure and ease, so much so, that I thought God had left me, and my experience for a time was like what we read in Lamentations: “He hath led me and brought me into darkness, but not into light. He hath hedged me about, that I cannot get out; he hath made my chain heavy.” For fifteen long months I struggled to get into holiness, reading all the books I could get on the subject, and even asking likely-persons, Was such an experience possible, and how were we to attain to it, but still I got no satisfaction. “Man’s extremity is God’s opportunity.” All at once it dawned upon me that if ever I was to get a clean heart it must be by faith. I laid my all on the altar and claimed his promise in Ezekiel 36:25-27, and went on my way praising God. I knew that I had entered the “holy of holies,” not because I felt different, but the outcome was, I acted differently, and those in my home and business saw such a change in me that some of them began to seek the Lord, and are now walking in the same blessed light. To God be all the glory. I have indeed realized the keeping power of Jesus during the last three years, and just as I have walked in the light, his precious blood has cleansed me moment by moment from all sin.

About the same time God planted such a desire in my soul to seek him with my whole heart, which has kept ever increasing till earthly things have lost their charm, and none but Christ can satisfy.

Since mine eyes were fixed on Jesus
I’ve lost sight of all beside,
So entranced my spirit’s vision,
Gazing at the Crucified.

Although sorely tried and tempted, sometimes almost pressed out of measure, the grace of Jesus has proved sufficient; with every trial and difficulty no matter how severe, there has always been a way of escape. I can say in all humility that I have learned to glory in tribulations, finding that “tribulation worketh patience, and patience experience, and experience hope, and hope maketh not ashamed, because the love of God is shed abroad in my heart by the Holy Ghost, which was given unto me.”

I longed to draw others into the same sweet fellowship, and to be brought in contact with some of the same mind, and the Lord gave me the desire of my heart, by allowing me in the early part of this year to attend a meeting of the saints, and I heard the evening light preached for the first time. I saw sectism, the prophecies and the ordinances in a light I had never seen them before. I went away from the meeting that night fully persuaded that it was of God, and with an honest intention of searching the scriptures to see whether these things were so or not; meanwhile the devil raised all the obstacles he could think of, to prejudice and keep me from attending the meetings; but in spite of him I went again and again till I was quite satisfied in my mind, and God showed me clearly that I must forsake Babylon entirely and obey him in the ordinances. Shortly after this I was baptized by Bro. Daugherty, and now, thank God, I am clear of the sects, and sectism out of me for ever. “Bless the Lord O my soul, and all that is within me bless his holy name!” “Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things, so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” My brother and sister have recently come out of sectism and are walking with myself in the beautiful light of God. We desire the prayers of all the dear saints that we may be kept faithful and low at the Master’s feet, ready to follow where he may lead.

Your brother hid away in Jesus,

W. Tunnicliff.

To all the Saints, with your Children, Greeting: May the rich blessings of Heaven and the consolations of the glorious gospel be with you all evermore. Amen. Last summer in our report of the Washington C. M. we made mention how the Spirit of God moved upon the hearts of his saints and church at Pullman, the necessity of establishing a saints’ school and home for children on the Pacific coast and in the mountain regions. Thank God, we are truly happy now to announce that this glorious sainted and holy institution is on the way of erection and establishment. At the Colfax meeting aboard of trustees were constituted over the saints’ school and home, known as the Pacific Saints’ School and Home. Truly the Lord is showing his own loving and guiding hand, and manifesting his sweet approbation in this glorious and much needed undertaking. The brethren are confident that the Lord will make, it a success. They hope to have it ready for service and school sometime next January, the Lord willing. 160 acres of land have been procured for that purpose, to farm for the school. The saints have also now their own burying ground, a beautiful location. The remainder to be cut up into lots of one acre each for any of the saints who may desire to build and make their home there, or ministers, field- workers, or holy widows who want to make-their home there, with a garden spot for each house. The building is to be 30×50 feet, two stories high.

The Lord has also called dear Bro. and Sister Bamford as father and mother in the school.

For any information address Bro. Jas. Bamford, Pullman, Wash. All free-will offerings of any kind send to Bro. A. B. Peterman, Treas., Box 56, Pullman. We heartily invite all the saints, elders, deacons and ministers in California, Oregon, on the Pacific coast and in the far West to join in with us at once in this noble undertaking, by your earnest prayers of faith, influence and free-will offerings of all kinds: money, quilts, bedding, etc. A little means are needed at once in order to hurry the work along. Bro. Bailey, the chairman, requested me to write to dear Bro. J. W. Byers, to extend his influence and support with them to the institution; whom we earnestly invite to assist in this work. Amen. You who have children and feel the need of such an institution on the coast, please write. In the name of Jesus we ask all the saints every where to pray for the prosperity and success of the Pacific School. Amen. Yours in the truth and in God,

F. N. Jacobson.

My testimony this morning is that I am saved and consecrated to do the whole will of God. “His yoke is easy, and his burden is light, I have found it so.” But the way of the transgressor is hard, and I have found that so. Since I have consecrated to do his will I have victory. Your saved sister,

Dear Saints of God: I am glad to say that I am sweetly saved in Jesus. About three years ago I heard the blessed evening light preached here by Brother Schell, and the Lord called me, and I am walking in the light as God gives it to me. The life that I now live, I live to the honor and glory of God, and desire an interest in your prayers, that I may be healed of catarrh of the head. I have been afflicted before and the Lord healed me. Pray for me, also for my son who has catarrh of the head. Pray for my family that they may give their hearts to God,

Yours in him, sanctified and satisfied,

Lizzie Frantom.

Dear Saints of the living God: I praise God to day for a present salvation full and free, which satisfies all our longings and fills our souls with his glory. O I do praise him for his saving and keeping power. I belong to the church of the firstborn which are written in heaven. Heb. 12:23. I have complete victory over all the works of the devil, and am preserved and hid away with Christ in God. While the devil is raging with all his power we are reigning with one Christ Jesus. Praise God forever and ever. Pray for us here. I am justified, sanctified and satisfied. Your sister,

Mary I. Smith.

To the Saints of the living God: My soul is full of love and praises by the Holy Ghost which is given unto me. The Lord did hear and answer prayer. What am I that thou art mindful of me, O my God! Blessed be his holy name! He keeps and saves me just now. Pray for me that God’s whole will be done in me, and that he give me strength each day. Pray for the people here that they discern the body of Christ, and the doctrine which is according to godliness in Christ Jesus. Yours in Christ,

Dear Brethren: I trust the Lord for everything, and am so glad I have learned to take him for my physician. My baby was very badly burned three weeks ago. I gave the case to the Lord at once. This morning finds him well and without a scar. Praise our God forever! He healed our little girl of fever. She was very sick, and I had the saints to come and anoint her and lay on hands, and the Lord touched her body, and now she is well and going to school. Praise the Lord! He will lend a helping hand in time of need for them that put their trust in him. I ask you to pray for me, that I may ever be found faithful and trusting in Jesus. Your saved sister,

S. A. Hicks.

Dear Saints: I am happy to tell you that I am free from sectarianism and dwelling with Christ alone. There are a few saints in this country. I would be happy to meet some of the holiness preachers. I am preaching all I can. I preach the straight Bible line. I am praying for God to send some of his ministers this way. There is a prospect of a great good to be done in this country for Christ. If any of the holiness preachers feel led by the good Spirit of the Master, address W. T. Hall, Morehead, Ky., and I will meet you at the train and find a home for you. As long as you will stay, my house is a home for all of God’s preachers. I am afflicted with asthma and want all of God’s dear children to pray for me that I may be healed. I believe that he will heal me. Yours truly in Christ Jesus,

W. T. Hall.

To all the Saints of the living God, Greeting: I have a great desire to once more magnify my Lord and Savior for saving my soul from sin’s domain, that others thereby may be strengthened to confidence in the exceeding great and precious promises of God; that by these all might be partakers of the divine nature. I praise God this day for his abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness, whereby I reign in this life with one Christ Jesus. According to his mercy he first convicted me of sins and gave me repentance unto life, and I received his Spirit as a witness to the forgiveness of my past sins. The Spirit of God also made me a new creature in Christ Jesus. Old things past away, such as the lust of the flesh, and lust of the eye, and I was astonished at the change that had taken place in my soul. This change the Lord wrought in me in answer to prayer in the name of Jesus, and faith in his promise that he hath made us accepted in the beloved. I believed God’s word, and after that I heard the word of truth, the gospel of our salvation in whom I believed, I found according to the scripture that it was my privilege also to be sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. God who is rich in mercy taught me soon after my conversion that it is better on before. So I believed again his great and precious promises, and on March 22, 1883, between twelve and one o’clock at midday, when I desired my Lord to destroy in me by a second work of grace, “the body of sin,” “or the carnal mind,” which is not subject to God, neither indeed can be; although I had sufficient grace most of the time for nine months to have victory over the indwelling foe, yet that did not satisfy me spiritually, for the foe must be destroyed; and, thank God, he hath granted me the desire of my heart and set his seal upon me. To him be all the glory.

Dear Saints: I, for the first time, will write my testimony, feeling that it will be to the honor and glory of God. I am enjoying the fulness of a Savior’s love and fully consecrated to all the will of God, praise the Lord! and am walking in this blessed evening light, clear from all the burden of sin, standing on the promises of God.

I joined the Baptist sect about the age of fifteen, but was not converted. I staid there awhile and soon began to discover the evil and confusion that was in it; although a sinner, I knew that such did not become the church of God. Not long ago I heard the doctrine of holiness preached, for the first time, by Bro. J. E. Shaw and some others. I at once saw it was Bible truth, although yet unsaved. I saw my lost condition, and trembled at the consequence, and with temptations thick and the wicked fiends of hell surounding me on every side I began to seek the Lord as best I knew; yet, when the invitation was given I went forward only to come away with a heavier burden than before, just because I had not become willing to pay the price. Sometimes I would go home from meeting, and sit for hours at night pondering over my sad condition, afraid to go backward and ashamed to go forward, and afraid to go to sleep for fear that I would wake in hell. Thus I continued for months, grieving the Spirit, yet not willing to give it up. Sometimes I would almost lose all hope. My sins would seem almost like mountains, together with the powers of darkness, the horrid thoughts of eternal judgment and endless woe. But there in that lonely hour a voice sweetly whispered to me saying:

“Christ, the Redeemer, hath power
To save a poor sinner like thee.
I listen’d, anti lo! ’twas the Savior
That was speaking so kind to me;
I cried, ‘I’m the chief of sinners,
Thou cans’t save a poor sinner like me.’

“I then fully trusted in Jesus,
And oh what a joy came to me;
My heart was filled with his praises,
For he sav’d a poor sinner like me.”

I then lived up to a justified state a few months, yet I knew that there was a higher state of grace for me. The Spirit urged me to move forward and I made an attempt, but soon got negligent about the matter, and being enticed by the different allurements of Satan, I fell under condemnation. Although my former experience of conversion was gone, it left an impression on my mind and heart, that I could not give it up. I still kept struggling for life. After awhile the Lord sent Brother and Sister Shaw back here to preach to us concerning the true church. Which I at once accepted.

I am walking in the blessed evening light free from sin, clear from sectism, consecrated to the divine will in all things. Pray for me that I may ever keep humble. Yours sanctified and kept,

George M. Moore.
