THE PILGRIM.

_____

Still onward through this him! of foes,
I pass in pilgrim guise;
I may not stop to seek repose,
Whore cool the shadow lies:
I may not stoop amid the grass
To pluck earth’s fairest flowers,
Nor by her springing fountains pass
The sultry noontide hours.

Yet flowers I wear upon my breast
That no earth-garden knows —
White lilies of immortal peace,
And love’s deep-tinted rose:
And there the blue-eyed flowers of faith,
And hope’s bright buds of gold.
As lone I tread the upward path,
In richest hues unfold.

I keep my armor ever on.
For foes beset my way:
I watch, lest passing on alone
I fall a helpless prey.
No earthly love have I — I lean
Upon no mortal breast:
But my Beloved, though unseen,
Walks near and gives me rest.

Afar, around, I often see.
Throughout this desert wide.
His pilgrims pressing on like me —
They often pass my side:
The kindly smile, the gentle word,
For Jesus’ sake I give:
But love — O Thou alone adored!
For thee alone I live.

Painful and dark the pathway seems
To distant earthly eyes:
They only see the hiding thorns
On either side that rise:
They cannot know how soft between
The flowers of love are strewn —
The sunny ways, the pastures green.
Where Jesus leads His own.

They cannot see, us darkening clouds
Behind the pilgrim close.
How far a down the western glade
The golden glory flows:
They cannot hear ‘mid earthly din
The song to pilgrims known
Still blending with the angels’ hymn
Around the wondrous throne.

So I, Thy bounteous token flowers
Still oil my bosom wear;
While me, the fleeting love-winged hours
To Thee still nearer bear;
So from my lips Thy song shall flow,
My sweetest music be;

Soon mine eyes the glory glow,
Till all is lost in Thee.

Sanctification.

_____

“For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that, ..ve should abstain from fornication.” 1 Thess. 1:3.

SANCTIFICATION is a work ..rought in the hearts of believers, and implies a complete destruction of all sinful elements; takes away cause and effect, leaving the soul in its normal condition or proper element, which is true holiness. It differs from justification, inasmuch as justification is the absolution of a sinner from all guilt of actual transgressions; while scanctification removes that nature that leads to the commission of sins. The first removes the effects of the carnal mind, while the latter destroys the cause of sins committed. Sins committed the Lord forgives, 1 Jno. 1:9 2:12. Sin inherited cannot be forgiven, but is rooted up, Mat. 15:13; is condemned by the law of Christ, Rom.8:3; and crucified in the act of sanctification. Rom. 6:6. Before Adam’s fall he was pure. Gen. 1:27. 5:1. He lost that purity and received a sinful image by his own transgression. This was the first step downward. After his fall he imparted to his posterity this same sinful nature. Gen. 5:3. This was the second step or sin by inheritance. Adam was a sinner; Seth nor none of Adam’s offspring were sinners until accountable for their actions, Adam, unless he sought and obtained pardon, was guilty; his procreation were innocent.

The following question has arisen in the minds of some who dispute over words of no profit, understanding not what they say: “If Adam had been permitted to produce offspring before his fall, would they not have been pure?” According to the whole tenor of the blessed Word we must say they would have been holy, for sin was unknown at that time. Then say these quibblers who desire to be teachers and have not learned the first principles of salvation, “If that be true, and we are brought again to the first state by redemption, why would we not be as man in his normal condition?” We read, “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” Rom. 5:12. A Savior was not needed until man was lost. When God saw that death had passed upon all men he sent a Savior, who tasted death for every man. Heb. 2:9. That whosoever would come unto him should not perish, but have everlasting life, Jno. 3:16, 17. And through the obedience of the Son of God shall many be made righteous, Rom. 5:19, even as many as believe on his name. Jno. 1:12. Through him only do we receive the atonement. Rom. 5:11. Christ the only Savior, through him only can we come to the Father. Eph. 2:18. As there are none born independent of the saving grace of God, he now commandeth all men everywhere to repent. Acts 17:30. Christ has become our sanctification, 1 Cor. 1:30, and without accepting him there is no holiness. Again, many times have I heard those who were working with seekers of sanctification, ask, “Have you consecrated all?” The answer is, “Yes.” “Now do you believe the Lord sanctifies you?” “Well I do not feel as though I am;” and here the individual is told just to believe, take it by faith, just trust, now do not doubt. Unto every honest soul, let me say, You cannot believe until you are on believing ground. Many souls in this age are being instructed to believe and testify to sanctification and then wait for the infilling, when then have not met the conditions required to bring them to a believing position. When one complies with conditions requisite to bring him into the favor of God, it is natural to believe. There is no need to urge him, for faith comes as a natural consequence. I have received many letters from different persons inquiring how to get sanctified, and asking, “Why cannot I receive it as promised?” Some ask, “What more can I do?” And these very individuals state that they have heard the truth for three, five and eight years, also during all this time they have been justified; yet they cannot believe. To all such let me say, If you will get down before God and repent, forgive and ask forgiveness, make restitution in all things, lay aside all that is contrary to the word of God, then you will begin to see what is the matter. Your heart condemns you or you could have confidence toward God (1 Jno. 3:21) to believe he would do as he has promised. If you cannot believe for sanctification, remember God wants you to first get justified, and that is what he is holding you to do. If a man does not get sanctified when he knows it to be the will of God, 1 Thess. 4:3, he fails to walk in the light, and according to the Word darkness comes upon him. Jno. 12:35. He is a sinner by omission, and in reference to the infilling of the Holy Spirit, there is an erroneous idea among some workers. For the Holy Ghost is the sanctifier. Rom. 15:16. And is also that which also fills the soul. Acts 2:1-4. 13:52. Hence the moment a person is sanctified they have the infilling without waiting for it. Though it is not always immediately manifested to the conscience. Heb. 10:36. They have the power also. Acts 1:8. Then all there is to wait for is for God to manifest himself and work in them both to will and do of his own good pleasure, and to know he leads before they run.

Again, I have heard certain teachers advise those who said they were called to preach the gospel, “Do not be in haste, but tarry at Jerusalem until you are endowed with power from on high.” Now there is a mistake somewhere, either on the part of the teacher or one taught. Be it remembered that when Christ gave the command to “tarry at Jerusalem,” he was speaking to believers not wholly sanctified, and the power to be received was the reception of the Holy Ghost. In the morning light after the church was perfected or filled with all the fullness of God, none were called to preach except those who were sanctified and preserved in Jesus Christ. Jude 1. And all the saved understand that the evening shall be as the morning. Hence we are safe in asserting in the light of Heaven’s truth in these last days that God does not send any one to teach the Word except those who are sanctified. The Holy Spirit being the sanctifier, none are sanctified without him. If an individual is sanctified and filled he has the power; if he has not the power he has not been called to preach. But either called unto repentance or unto holiness.

In conclusion, the very cause of so many professing to be saved and afterward found walking in sin, or failing to stand, is because they have never reached the standing grace. If many persons in pretending to consecrate for sanctification were held to repentance by the Word they would either get thoroughly saved, or not profess to be saved; which in either case would not bring a reproach upon the cause of Christ. It is better by far, dear ones, to leave a place, being able to report but few souls saved if they have indeed got salvation, than report fifty, and in one year return to the same place to find but two or three standing true. Be careful, brethren and sisters, that we see that a genuine work is our object, and not numbers. Comparatively speaking, I am assured that but few who are fully established turn away from the perfect love of God. Many start, but few attain the standing grace. May Christ be unto us much wisdom in this world of sin, for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

Train Your Children.

_____

MUCH has been said already on this subject, but I feel like rehearsing the subject, for this is a great and important one. Dear ones, ask yourselves this question: “Have I done my whole duty?” Thank God, I can say from the bottom of my heart, I have been doing my duty as fast as God made it known to me. And I feel I am prepaid a hundred fold already.

Have you always been faithful to God, when temptations and trials waxed hard against you? Did not some of you, when a busy season came on, or you had hired men around you, perhaps boarders, perhaps men who follow a threshing machine, — did not Satan whisper, “You have not time now for family worship? You cannot pray, or have your children pray before these unsaved men.” Did you yield? Did you fail to let your light shine, and thereby cause your children to lose confidence in you? Did not some of them quit praying when you did, and have never commenced again; and perhaps have thereby caused some of you many bitter tears? Ah! dear ones, time is precious, too precious to be lost in this way.

It will be eight years next February since I last enlisted in the service, and God has kept me faithful thus far under every circumstance, although my husband has been unsaved the greater part of this time, and we have had unsaved hired men around us much of the time, and some were most bitter against the truth. We have had many callers just at prayer time, and many were most bitter enemies to the truth. I remember one instance in which we kept several boarders for several weeks. We had to arise in the morning from two to three o’clock for them to go to work. Some of them were most ungodly men. Satan used to often say to me, “Now they are paying their board, and while none of them are saved they will not want to be bothered with your family prayer.” I told him the Lord said I should let my light shine, and the darker the place the brighter it needed to shine. One morning my husband was sick, not able to be up and even kneel with us. Although he was unsaved it seemed to be a support to have him kneel with us. But that time I was left to lean on Jesus alone; I tell you then it was I realized I was weak. But I knew Jesus was strong; so down on my knees I went, calling on God for strength, and he gave it too; bless his name! Oh dear ones, don’t falter by the way. Do you know Satan laughs at every victory he gains over you? Oh! may the Lord give us all grace to do his will in all things, so we may never give the devil a chance to laugh over anything.

Before me I read these words: “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old he will not depart from it.” How is it, my friends? Do you first set the example? Do you follow the footsteps of Jesus, and teach your children to follow you, as you follow Christ? Are your words all clean and wholesome? Do you speak unclean words before them, that you would be ashamed for them to rehearse before strangers? If so, could you tell them it was a shame to talk so? Do you always speak the truth to them, in love? I have seen those when their children were little, they told them all manner of falsehoods in the way of jokes; and when they grew to be men and women and told lies for truth, in important matters, their parents seemed very much worried, and wondered why it was so. It was all plain to me. “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” If they had been taught from infancy to abhor a lie of any kind; that all liars shall have their part in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone; taught by example as well as precept, their lives would surely have been different. In Prov. 23:24. 25, we read, “The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him. Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.”

This training process must begin when they are babes. Teach them to honor God and their parents. Teach them to fear God. Tell them God sees all they do, hears all they say, and knows all they think. Do not be afraid to warn them of sin, and especially the secret vice. Do not be afraid to warn your sons and daughters against this evil. One little girl who had been warned early against this great evil, said she did not do these things. She said Satan tempted her sometimes, but she did not yield; she knew if she did she would be lost. We bought a copy of the BOY’S COMPANION, and loaned it to several boys to read. One young man after reading this book said if he had had that book long ago it would have saved him from many a wicked sin. We see so many of the youth of our land filling premature graves. Oh how many young men die with consumption from the age of sixteen to twenty-five years! How many children have St. Vitus’ dance! No doubt in the majority of these cases, this secret sin was the cause, if the truth were known. Dear ones, we will not stand acquitted before God, till we have done our whole duty in this matter. If we warn them not and they go down, their blood will be required at our hand. Ezek. 33:6. Do not wait on some one else to teach your children. Begin at once yourselves; ask God to help you. Get them interested in some of the Holy Bible stories. Keep praying and teaching daily. Do not think one lesson a month is enough. Perhaps it will lose all its attraction before they get another.

I have two little ones; and it does my soul good to see them so interested in this work. God has blest them with wonderful wisdom and good memories thus far. My eldest, which is not quite eight, but can read quite well, is a great comfort to me on this Christian journey. Could you hear her come and ask Mamma for a Bible lesson, and then is not satisfied sometimes till we together have read two and three chapters, and then try to follow Jesus, surely you would think it pays to begin to teach early.

TESTIMONY.

_____

Brushy Prairie, Ind.

Dear Ones in the Lord: I truly praise God this morning for his wonderful goodness toward me. I know it was not for any good thing that I have done that God spared my life and saved my soul. I do praise the dear Lord for calling me from darkness into light and giving me a willing heart to follow him in all his ways. God has done so much for me. When I met the conditions of his word he forgave all my actual transgressions, and afterwards I presented my body a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto the Lord, which was my reasonable service, and he sanctified me wholly. Praise his dear name! Now God gives me real joy and peace continually. Joy that is unspeakable and full of glory, and that the world cannot give, neither can it take away. I find real pleasure in serving the Lord, and the way grows brighter every day. Dear ones, it means much to be dead to the world and walk pleasing in the sight of the Lord. And it takes much humble prayer and a close walk with Jesus to live where God can use us to his glory. But I truly thank God that I am dead and my life is hid away with Christ in God. God has taught me many precious lessons on humility and submission to his will in all things. O what precious promises God has given, and what blessings we receive when we live humble, low down at Jesus’ feet! How I love to see the bands of Satan broken and captive souls go free! Dear ones, pray that I may live low at the feet of Jesus, where the blood can flow over me and keep me clean, and useful in the hands of the Lord. Your humble sister,

Nora Greenawalt.

Our little editorial about “busy-bodies” was not to find fault with any person for reproving and admonishing parties who are disposed to marry and are not elligible to be joined according to the Scriptures. If either party has a living companion the Word forbids them to marry.

But when there is no scriptural reason why two persons may not be married, they, if intelligent, are supposed to be the best judges as to whether the Lord has joined them in love, and others should keep hands and lips out of the case.

QUESTIONS.

_____

Please explain Mat. 5:29, 30?

The words of the Savior here require us to cut off the right hand and right foot, and pluck out the right eye, if these members offend us, or as rendered by other translators, if they “become a snare to thee,” or “ensnare thee.”

The language is to receive a figurative application and not literal. Just as these members of the body are dear to us, and their amputation painful, so some men have sinful habits that seem as dear and that it would appear to utterly kill them to to give up. But to save the soul these must be cut off.

More particularly does this sacrifice relate to imbred sin and its desires; for these were born in us, just as our hands, feet and eyes we wrought with us into the world.

One thing especially the Savior seems to allude to as a dreadful foe to the soul, and that is unholy sexual lust. Hence just before using the above strong figure he says, “But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. Mat. 5:28.

The blood of Christ and the grace and power of God are able to remove this perverted lust of the flesh, and bring the body under subjection to the law of righteousness. But to attain unto it, a real death to the unholy lust must take place, and its unlawful gratification cut off.

_____

Can the devil heal the sick, and cast out devils?

If not, then why call the Christian Science the works of the devil?

Two scriptures will be sufficient to furnish an answer to this question.

“Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they receive not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.” 2 Thess 2:9, 10.

“For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. 2 Cor. 11:13-15.

The first of these texts is speaking of the apostasy which first arose in the character of the Roman Catholic institution. “Whose coming is after the working of Satan, with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with all deceivableness.” Here is described the manner of Satan’s working. He shows forth great power, all power. Then he can do miracles. And to him Is ascribed signs, and lying wonders, and these prodigies he performs with all deceivableness; namely, with a view to deceive men into the fellowship of his ungodly instruments, and thereby destroy their souls. Hence we may expect him to perform through his agents about the same things God works through his holy ministry, to heal the sick, etc. If the working of the devil is with “all power,” he surely has power to heal the sick. This is further proved by the fact that sickness is often the very works of the devil; hence we are told that Jesus healed men who were “oppressed of the devil.” If, therefore, Satan has power to put sickness upon men, he certainly has power to remove his own works.

In the second text we are told that both Satan and his ministers transform themselves into “angels of light,” and “ministers of righteousness.” What else does this mean but the fact that, in order to deceive and overthrow souls, Satan’s ministers will appear to duplicate, and counterfeit the very works that the ministers of Christ are commissioned to do, i. e. heal the sick, etc.

But can the devil’s agents cast out devils? There is no danger that they will so cast out evil spirits that the person will become actually delivered. But since Satan is said to perform all “lying wonders,” may we not readily conclude that his servants will appear, to cast out devils? perform wonders that he will falsely call casting out of devils?

Therefore we do not hesitate to say that the devil works all the miracles, if such really occur, among the anti-Christian Science. We cannot call that Christian which is opposed to the Christian doctrine. And such is the science under consideration. And because directly opposite to the word of God in many respects, we know the Holy Spirit does not work in and through it. For he is the “Spirit of truth,” and only operates in and by the truth.

For a pretty good picture of this science falsely called Christian, and many other modern inventions of the devil, we give you the following from Deut. 13:1-4.

“If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, and the sign or wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the Lord your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Ye shall walk after the Lord your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.”

Here false prophets are spoken of as producing signs and wonders which actually transpire. But because they introduce “other gods which we have not known,” not learned from the Bible, “ye shall not hearken unto the words of that prophet;” and the next verse says such “shall be put to death.” That old law dispensation would have dealt pretty severely with Spiritualists, Christian Scientists, and many other modern works of the devil.

We say the above scripture applies to the Christian Science because it is a new god lately sprung up, a thing not found in the Bible. But they say they take their teaching from the Bible. So did Satan take his words from the Bible when he tempted Christ; but he was none the less the devil himself. And so is Spiritualism and Christian Science the work of the devil, notwithstanding all the use they make of the Bible; and whatever signs and lying wonders they may perform.

Is the world getting worse? In what way? Is the world getting better? How?

Will Jesus Christ come to this earth again, and reign a thousand years as a temporal prince, establish his capital at Jerusalem, and subdue all nations under him?

Resp’y E. J. B.

Yes, the world is growing worse, in general wickedness, crime and idolatrous greed. But more especially in deception and delusion and in the general darkness that is settling down over the Gentile nation.

Perhaps the wisdom of the earth sees advancement in society, but we can see no real sense in which the word of God is not being fulfilled, and this generation waxing worse and worse.

Christ will return to this earth, but not to set up a temporal kingdom, nor millennial reign. But to resurrect all from their graves, and judge the race. See the new work on the millennial doctrine, just published in this office.

Please explain Rev. 14:9-11. What is the mark of the beast?

J. H. N.

The beast refers back to the preceding chapter where the apostasy is described by the figure of two beasts arising one after another; which cover Romanism and Protestantism. And in the above text the beast simply denotes the apostasy in general, including both or either of the beast powers.

The mark of the beast is anything, in a person’s education, conversation, actions, badges, cut of hair or clothing, by which their sect membership may be indicated.

The mark of the beast in the forehead would include sprinkling, an institution of popery, also sectarian education, which is manifest in the use of unscriptural expressions.

The mark of the beast in the hand, doubtless denotes any work men devote to the upbuilding of Babylon. The mark of the beast in the right hand — Rev. 13:16 — is the manifestation of fellowship with sectism.

Please explain Mat. 7:1-5. Who are they having the mote and the beam?

The Savior’s figurative lesson here is intended to rebuke hypocrites who attempt to eliminate little faults from their brethren, compared to motes in the eye, while at the same time they have enormous sins in their own heart, compared to a beam in the eye. Such inconsistent hypocrites he rebukes, and forbids them to judge others and attempt to point out their faults while blinded by their own sins.

But he further tells them to first cast out the beam that is in their own eye, then they shall see clearly to judge their neighbor. The lesson therefore forbids blinded sinners and hypocrites to presume to judge, or point out the faults in others. And it also positively teaches that men who are fully saved in the Lord have authority and ability to judge all men, “Yet he himself is judged of no man.”

Dear Saints of God: I feel led to write my testimony on Divine Healing, for God so, wonderfully healed me. Hear is the question: Is the day of healing past? No. On the 30th day of July I took a severe pain in my body. It kept on hurting me, and on the third day of August I was down to the little town named above. I took a terrible pain while sitting on a bench. I put my hand upon the place and was surprised, as there was a hole in my body. I got up and walked across the street and went into the grocery. I told the keeper what had happened; he said a rupture had come down on me. I got very sick and fainted; they called the doctor in; he said I must be taken to my home, which is a half mile from town. I was taken home, then sent for the doctor. He came and gave me medicine to relieve the suffering; he came back the next morning and put a bandage on me in the afternoon. I took worse and sent for the doctor again; he came and injected morphine into my arm. I did not know my sufferings; he kept coming every day. So I got a truss and put it on; it would not do any good; so I got another truss and tried it; it would not do any good either. I had three trusses, and none of them would do. Then I began to pray. I lay on my bed helpless. I had been asking God what I must do to be healed. I received the witness that I could be healed. This was op Tuesday, Sept. 3. I called my father in my room and told him I could be healed. So we prayed and agreed together on this one thing. I felt I was partly healed, so I asked the Lord again; I got the witness that I could be perfectly healed. Again we prayed. I felt a great change: I got right up, dressed myself, and I have been going ever since. On Saturday I got to go to town. I did not want to go but had to go and tell what the Lord had done for me. Now is the day of healing past? again I say, No. Here are some proofs to healing. These are true; for God says, “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my word shall never pass away.” John 15:7. “If ye abide in me and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” 1 John 5:14, 15. Mark 9:23. John 14:13, 14. If there are no elders close where we can get them, we have the promise in Mat. 18:19, 20, “Again I say unto you, that if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.” So I took this promise and was healed. Praise God forever! I look to be persecuted. People may say, I am crazy and not in my right mind and do not know what I am doing. But that does not make it so. Praise God! I cannot praise him enough. Well the doctor came back since I have been healed and he was surprised to see me up walking around, for when he left me I was in a bad condition. He shook hands with me and said, “Well, you are better, are you?” I said “yes, there is nothing the matter with me.” He said, “Did you take the medicine I left you?” I told him I took some of it, it made me sick and I would not take any more. He felt of my pulse and said, “Well you are better.” I told him I was healed. He says, “Healed! I do not know what you mean.” I said I was healed like the blind man whom Christ healed. He said, “well, I am glad you are better.” And so I am healed in the name of Jesus. I had lung trouble and was healed in the same way. The Lord is my physician. I used to be a slave

to tobacco and used it in every form. I had to give it up before God would cleanse me, and now I am every whit made whole in Christ. Praise God! I hope this testimony will be a help to others when they see it in the Trumpet. I love the GOSPEL TRUMPET, for it tells of others that God has healed. Yours justified, sanctified, and satisfied,

The Truth as it is in Christ, is the only standard of truth, and is the same truth in Him, in His Holy Spirit, and inspired Word, also in the experience and lives of those who walk in truth by faith. “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.’’ 3 John 4, “There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” Prov. 14:12. Such a way may have some truth, but not the whole truth up to the New Testament standard of truth. All other standards but the New Testament standard of the truth as it is in Christ are only standards of deception. So sure as God is moving His people to the New Testament standard, every one that will not move in line with the New Testament will be sifted out. Amos 9:9, 10. Some make t.. own honesty the standard instand of making God’s word the standard, and say, ‘‘I know I am honest and I do not think God will suffer me to be deceived.” But strong delusions blind the eyes from seeing the truth, until too late. Like the rich man, in hell he lifted up his eyes, etc.

One of Satan’s most blinding deceptions is that of false love, which rejects admonition, and cries, “Oh you must have charity! You must show love; you must not judge,” etc , and then runs the rounds of self justification, or claims the liberty to fellowship all who profess to be Christians, and worship with any sect. It is much like the unclean seducing spirit that accommodates itself to all classes and grades of society, and finds perfect liberty in the houses of ill fame, and for the married it finds cause for separation, and after separation it finds cause for unscriptural marriage and remarriage, trampling the truth and law of God under foot, with some human sanction in its favor. It “creeps into houses and leads captive silly women,” etc. 2 Tim. 3:6.

All seducing spirits have attractions of some kind, or they could not deceive. Satan beguiled our first parents by his lying deceptions, and the lying prophet detained the man of God, who was killed by a lion for his disobedience. “To obey is better than sacrifice.” Any spirit that leads contrary to God’s word is only a deceiver, even if they who are led by it profess like the lying prophet to have received a revelation from God contrary to his holy word. May God so write his law in the hearts and minds of his people, that the real Word and Spirit of God does live in them until they obey God, keeping all of his commandments and ordinances blameless, and nothing can deceive them, or seduce the m from obeying the whole truth. Amen.

Dear Trumpet Reapers: The Lord is wonderfully moving on the hearts of the people in this place. The interest is good. About eight consecrations; several healed, one a cripple who now has a situation and gone to work. Three baptized since our last report; also I was a few days with the church in Pittsburg, Pa. Six were baptized, and had a good ordinance meeting. The Lord wonderfully blessed the truth on divine healing; let us all preach it more.

Dearly Beloved in Christ: Praise the Lord for victory! Meeting at Long Bottom closed Sunday night. Truly our labor has not been in vain in this place, for we feel that some seed has fallen in good and honest hearts. The people in general acknowledge the truth, and some we feel will soon make a full surrender of all to God. The Lord is very precious to all our hearts, and has given victory in the meetings. God bless the dear ones at Long Bottom for the temporal blessings we received at their hands. Meeting begins here to-night. Address Hazel, Ohio.

Dear Saints, Greeting: The C. M. at Sircoxie Prairie, Mo. was a success. Some of the saints came quite a distance. A goodly number we had never met until they came to that beautiful camp ground, but they proved themselves to be the dear children of God. The meeting started well; seekers were at the altar almost from the beginning, and continued in like manner until its close. After we had taken down the tent, we met at one of the brothers’ homes in prayer meeting, and two others found this blessed salvation which delivers from sin. Such was the unity and harmony of God’s messengers and saints at large, that with one mind, and one accord they could make known their petitions, and receive immediate answers. Oh how blessed was the fellowship of the saints on that camp! Many were the cases of healing, nearly all instantaneous, and very clear. Praise God for his blessings upon his suffering ones! A number of preachers and workers were present. We had an ordinance meeting, sixty-seven partaking of the same. A number were baptized. The last service was a most precious one. How loath all were to leave the place where we had enjoyed such rich feasts from Father’s bountiful hand! Whilst we rejoiced in the Spirit, sad were the hearts of those who clasped hands, probably with many for the last time here on earth. Thus ended the best camp meeting we have ever had the privilege of attending. Yours for souls,

Danville, Ill., Sept. 23.

Dear Saints of God: Since the Junction camp meeting we have had many precious meetings, for which we give God all the glory. After Bro’s Davison and Pike left us at Eugene, some six souls found their way to God. One poor man, a medium, confessed his condition and was delivered from the bondage of Satan and from the familiar spirit that dwelt in him, and found sweet peace with God. At the close of the Eugene meeting ten more were immersed. After Beaver Dam C. M. God gave us a precious little meeting at Marion, Ind., and opened the way for a few months siege which we expect to hold some time in October. Meeting at Carbondale not very well attended, but a few found God in pardon, and one in the second grace. One poor invalid at the poor farm that we visited, gave her heart to God. She is some thirty-four years of age; was brought to the farm at fourteen; is partially paralyzed, yet expresses great confidence in God. Her mind is owing to her surroundings not very well developed. Space does not permit a full description, but we assure the household of faith that hers is a most pitiable case. We ask the prayers of all for her, that she may be delivered. Meeting on Bro. Hoskin’s place resulted in the salvation of souls, and the deliverance of one sister from sectism. The Lord willing we will visit the dear ones at Eugene this week on our way to Cayuga, Ind. Our testimony is that God keeps us saved; that we have the real glory of God, and the signs follow us. To God be all the glory. Pray for us. Address at Cayuga, Ind. Yours in Jesus,

Frisco, Ark , Sept. 23.

Dear Saints: In company with Bro. Fly and company and Bro. and Sister Newkirk we attended the camp meeting at Clayton, Okla. Because of high water, etc. there was not a large attendance, but there were a number of saints present from various places in Oklahoma. It was decidedly a time of settling down for the church. Many who had gotten away from God by the cunning of the enemy again found favor with him. A number who had not been saved before came to the Lord. We saw as never before the power of agreement by faith, proving God by continual agreement on many different lines. About eighteen we believe were baptized, and sixty-seven took part in washing the saints’ feet, and the Lord’s supper. The dear children in this new country did advance wonderfully in the grace of God, as well as the older saints. Leaving Clayton, our entire company came eleven days drive through the Indian country to Frisco. While in the Creek nation one of our horses was stolen. We could not get any trace of it, so we came on with one horse. Arriving here we found Bro’s Caudel and Murphy, Bro. and Sister Sunderland and other ministers on the ground. The powers of hell seemed bent to keep the distant saints from getting here, and its dark forces were keenly felt for several days after the meeting began. But God gave victory. We met some zealous but fanatic notions here. But the Lord made his truth plain and it was a real settling down time for all present, and especially the little church on the mountain here. Thirteen were baptized and seventy-six wished the saints’ feet. The brethren are moving on with the school and quite a number of the workers’ children are already placed in the home. God bless the home and those who have given their time to the work of God here. Bro. Fly will begin meeting in the mountains near. Bro. Newkirk returns to Oklahoma and we will move north and east as God wills. Mail will reach us if sent to Frisco, Ark. In the fellowship of the gospel,

Dear Saints: We are happy to report victory, both in our souls and in the gospel work. We are on the forward move for God, gaining ground. We are glad to report that the C. M. near Hartsells, Ala. was a success. The Lord was with us and his power was felt. There were about twenty-five or thirty professions, most of them pardon, a few professed sanctification; a few back sliders was restored. We give God all the glory. Eleven were baptized during the meeting. About fifty-five or sixty happy saints participated in the ordinances the last Sabbath of the meeting. There was quite a number of cases of divine healing. Praise the Lord for his loving kindness to heal the suffering ones of his children! There was a general effort put forth by the saints during the meeting to advance in spiritual things. We believe that quite a number were successful in their efforts. This was by far the best meeting we witnessed while in the South. The ministerial help present were Bro. Ostis B Wilson and wife, and Bro. Noah Duncan. The Lord also used Pro’s Preston Sharp and Alfred Hand, of this county, in delivering his word. At the close of the C. M. the tent was erected in Lawrence’s Cove, about ten miles from the camp ground, where the Lord gave us a good meeting. Some fifteen or twenty souls professed the grace of God. About nineteen souls were baptized. May the Lord keep all the dear ones true to him. The work in Alabama seems to be in a very prosperous condition. Praise the Lord! An able minister will be much needed to lead many on into the establishing grace, which are not yet sanctified. May the Lord send whom he will. The people of the South that accept the truth are generally poor in this world’s goods, but their souls are just as precious as if they were worth millions. May the Lord send the truth every where. After the close of the above mentioned meeting we, with much reluctance, took our departure from the dear saints and the loved field in the South for a season. Our future is in the hands of God. Pray for us that we may understand his leadings and be kept in his order.

Your brother and sister wholly consecrated to God, and saved from all sin just now,

Los Angeles, Cal., Sept. 24.

Dear Brethren: Our souls magnify the Lord for his wonderful goodness and abiding presence. We arrived in San Diego, Sept. 14, and held five meetings with the saints of God in that place, having an ordinance meeting on Sunday. We also visited the brethren at National City, Otay, and Oneonta. Bro. Simons and family live near the latter place, about a quarter of a mile from the fine between Mexico and the United States. After stopping with them a short time we went over into Mexico for a short time.

Returning from Mexico we came direct to this place where we found the dear ones with their tents pitched ready for camp meeting. There are about as many kinds of counterfeit holiness here, as can be found in any one city. It seems as if the whole city of “Babylon” had selected this place to plant her doctrines of babel confusion; and holiness so-called is very popular even among the various denominations, and there is almost every shade of doctrine and belief, bands and associations of galvanized holiness, nevertheless God has established his church here in the beauty of his holiness, “on the top of the mountains.” And the people can only be brought to see the truth and discern the body of Christ — his church — amid all these counterfeits, by having Bible holiness set forth in all its purity arid the lines drawn where the Bible draws it, and the standard lifted up to where it belongs, with Bible signs following.

We are now in the midst of the meeting. Souls are being converted, sanctified, and the sick and afflicted healed, and evil spirits cast out, and the name of the Lord glorified. One brother who bad been totally deaf in his left ear for thirty-seven years, came forward with a number of others to be prayed for. And the Lord touched him with his healing power. He afterwards stood up and testified to the people of the miracle that had been wrought by the Lord in his case, and was thoroughly tested before the audience and was much rejoiced to be so he could hear the sword of God preached again. A sister whose eyesight failed seventeen years ago, and stated that to be a few feet away from any one she could not see their eyes. She gave up her sectism, consecrated herself to the Lord, applied for healing, and as soon as hands were laid on according to the Word, and the prayer of faith offered, she threw her spectacles away and could then not only see the eyes of the people, and began to tell even the color of the eyes of some who stood around near by, and could read very coarse print, and we trust she will soon be able to read fine print as well. There have been many other wonderful cases of heading in the meetings. To God be all the glory and praise. Yours in Him,

Dearly Beloved Saints: I feel led of the Lord to give my testimony once more. Some years ago I had an attack of inflammation of the bowels, which was very painful and distressing. I was then not in the faith, so I appealed to a worldly physician and got relief slowly. Not long since the same pains and distressing feelings came upon me. The devil said, “Send for the doctor.” I said the great Physician now is near, the sympathizing Jesus. Then I said, Lord, thou hast said in thy blessed Word, “Ask, and ye shall receive.” Mat. 7:7, 8. “Now I ask you in the name of Jesus Christ our blessed Redeemer, to remove all the pains from me.” The devil whispered, “he’ll not do it.” I said it is done; God’s word is truth. He said I should receive, and he cannot lie. I know I am healed; and from that day to this I have been free from said pains. Glory be to our God! This time I was healed instantaneously, and while I keep trusting in the promises of God, I expect to keep healed. We find plenty of people who say there are no miracles now. But we read Luke 3:17 and we find that such people are the chaff spoken of. Pray for me that I may keep true; learn all God wants me to know and remain low at his feet, and meet you all around the throne of God, where we will live in the presence of Him who redeemed us, while endless ages roll. Hallelujah!

GIVING AND RECEIVING.

_____

Phil. 4:9-19 — Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace will be with you. But I rejoice in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity. Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Notwithstanding, ye have well done, that ye did communicate with my affliction. Now ye Philippians, know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only. For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity. Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound to your account. But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, well pleasing to God. But my God shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

TO WHOM SHALL WE GIVE?

1 Chron. 16:28, 29 — Give unto the Lord, ye kindred of the people, give unto the Lord glory and strength. Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

Mal. 3:8-12 — Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have fobbed me, even this whole nation; Bring ye all the tithes into the Storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts. And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the Lord of hosts.

Mat. 5:42 — Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

Luke 6:30 — Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.

1 Cor. 9:9-15 — For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the Corn. Doth God take care for oxen? Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that plougheth should plough in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things? If others be partakers, of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ. Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar? Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel. But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void.

Gal. 6:6 — Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things.

Deut. 15:7-11 — If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother: but thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he wanteth. Beware that there be not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou givest him nought: and he cry unto the Lord against thee, and it be sin unto thee. Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for this thing the Lord thy God shall bless thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto. For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land.

1 Chron. 29:5-17 — The gold for things of gold, and the silver for things of silver, and for all manner of work to be made by the hands of artificers. And who then is willing to consecrate his service this day. unto the Lord?

Then the chief of the fathers and princes of the tribes of Israel, and the captains of thousands and of hundreds, with the rulers of the king’s work, offeree willingly, and gave, for the service of the house of God, of gold five thousand talents and ten thousand drams, and of silver ten thousand talents, and of brass eighteen thousand talents, and one hundred thousand talents of iron. And they with whom precious stones were found gave them to the treasure of the house of the Lord, by the hand of Jehiel the Gershonite. Then the people rejoiced, for that they offered willingly, because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the Lord: and David the king also rejoiced with great joy.

Wherefore David blessed the Lord before all the congregation: and David said, Blessed be thou, Lord God of Israel our father, forever and ever. Thine, O Lord, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and thou art exalted as head above all. Both riches and honor come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine rand is power and might; and in thine land it is to make great, and to give strength unto all. Now therefore our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name. But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee. For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding. O Lord our God, all this store that we have prepared to build thee a house for thine holy name cometh of thine hand, and is all thine own. I know also, my God, that thou triest the heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in uprightness of mine heart I have willingly offered all these things: and now have I seen with joy thy people, which are present here, to offer willingly unto thee.

1 Cor. 4:7 — For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it?

Eph. 4:28 — Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.

WHAT SHALL WE GIVE?

Ex. 25:1-4 — And the Lord spake unto Moses saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, that they may bring me an offering: of every man that giveth it willingly with his heart ye shall take my offering. And this is the offering which ye shall take of them; gold, and silver, and brass, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen, and goats’ hair.

Luke 16:8-12 — And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light. And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations, He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man’s, who shall give you that which is your own?

1 Tim. 6:17-19 — Charge them that are rich in this world, that they he not high- minded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; that they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

Luke 11:41 — But rather give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you.

Acts 3:6 — Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.

HOW SHALL WE GIVE?

Ex. 25:2 — … ..nto the children of Israel, that they bring me an offering: of every man that giveth it willingly with his heart ye shall take my offering.

2 Cor. 9:6, 7 — But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall also reap sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

Ezra 2:68, 69 — And some of the chief of the fathers, when they came to the house of the Lord which is at Jerusalem, offered freely for the house of God to set it up in his place: they gave after their ability unto the treasure of the work threescore and one thousand drams of gold, and five thousand pounds of silver, and one hundred priests’ garments.

Rom. 12:8 — Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.

Acts 20:33-35 — I have coveted no man’s silver, or gold, or apparel. Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me. I have shewed you all things, how that so laboring ye ought to support, the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

1 Cor 16:1, 2 — Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gathering when I come.

Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth it shall die. Eze. 18:4.

He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of man was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 1 John 3:8.

WHO SHALL LIVE?

But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right, * * * hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he thall surely live, saith the Lord God. Eze. 18:5, 9.

THE CONDEMNATION.

He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. John 3:18.

CHRIST OUR LIFE.

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Jno. 14:6.

Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. John 11:25, 26.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. John 5:24.

HOW WE RECEIVE LIFE.

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: by whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Rom. 5:1, 2.

If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love. John 15:10.

HOW WE MAY KNOW WE HAVE LIFE.

We know that we have passed from death unto life because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 1 John 3:14-16. Read balance of chapter.

If we live in God we must love our brother.

If a man say, I Jove God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? 1 John 4:20. Read Mat. 5:38-48.

WE MUST LIVE AS CHRIST LIVED.

Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. 1 John 4:17.

HOW DID HE LIVE?

For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. 1 Pet. 2:21-24.

THE NARROW WAY.

For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. Jas. 2:10.

CONCLUSION.

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. Eccl. 22:13.

Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. Heb. 10:38.

It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Heb. 10:31.

TESTIMONY.

_____

East Jordan, Mich.

Dear Saints of God: I wish to tell all the dear ones what the Lord has done for me. Praise his name! I must tell you how wonderfully the dear Lord raised me from the brink of the grave. About two months ago the Lord allowed an affliction to come upon me, all for his glory. I was taken sick on Saturday night, and was sick one week, and one day before the Lord saw fit to heal me, he allowed me to get so near death as possible and live. It was on the Lord’s day, and the dear saints were assembled in their house of worship which I could see from my window and I could hear them sing the praises of God, as my window was open. The Lord let me get so low that every one thought I was surely going to leave this world, but he then showed me he would heal me to his glory. So they sent for the dear ones at meeting to come over. And they dismissed meeting and all came over. As they began to pray I felt the power of God touch this body in a second of time, and before they got through praying I was praising God. Oh bless his name! And after we had praised God awhile I got up and dressed myself and came down stairs to dinner, and went to meeting that night as well as I ever was in my life. And my father who was an unbeliever in divine healing, was convinced that God would heal in these last days. And there were others there who had lately come out of sectism who were wonderfully strengthened in faith. To God be all the glory for his dealings with me. I did not know at first why I was afflicted, but the Lord showed me by his word, that it was given to me not only to believe on him but also to suffer for his sake, and I know his name got glory out of my affliction. I am still saved, sanctified and healed by power divine, and willing he should have his way with me. Praise his dear name forever! Your sister in Christ,

Maria E. Moore.
