HE IS JUST THE SAME TO DAY.

_____

Have you ever board of Jesus,
How he came from heaven to earth
With a name of mighty virtue.
Though by very humble birth?
When the world was held in bondage
Under Satan’s dismal sway,
Jesus healed their dread diseases —
He is just the same to day.

Do you see the people gather
’Round that great and holy man.
Bringing all the sick and suffering.
Coming to him, all who can?
See him look with great compassion
As they fainted by the way:
How he called them gently to him —
He is just the same to day.

See him touch the trembling leper,
Hear the words, “I will.” “He clean:”
See the suffering one with fever
Rise and go about again;
See the palsied man rejoicing.
Take his bed and walk away.
What a wondrous man was Jesus —
He is just the same to day.

Do you hear the blind man calling,
Crying out with all his might,
In his sorrow plead for mercy.
Son of David, give me sight?
Jesus stopped and called the beggar.
’Tis by faith, I hear him say,
And he healed him in a moment —
He is just the same to day.

See the woman, weak and fainting,
Pressing through the restless throng:
See, she only touched his garment,
And her sore disease was gone.
See another bound by Satan.
Eighteen years, I hear them say;
Jesus touches her, site straightens
He is just the same to day.

Thus he went about his mission.
Healing lame, and blind, and dumb;
Ousting out ail evil spirits.
Saying to the weak. Be strong;
Then be died on cruel Calvary.
Sin and death to put away;
In the dismal tomb they laid him —
Call it be he’s there to day?

No: he tiled that he might ransom
Every one from Satan’s thrall:
But he was a mighty conqueror.
Offering life and health to all.
Up to heaven he ascended.
Sent the Spirit back to stay.
Dwelling in his holy people
He is just the sumo to day.

See him now in John and Peter,
And the lame man as he lay,
Who was healed through faith in Jesus —
He is just the same to day
As he was to his disciples.
If we but believe as they.
He is not an absent Savior,
Brother, he is here to day.

Just the same to day, my brother,
Saving, healing, cleansing all;
Ready, willing, calling, cheering
All who seek him, great and small.
Come to him, poor weary sufferer.
Not a moment more delay;
He will give you boundless blessings.
For he’s just the same to day.

__________

JUDGMENT.

_____

For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the and be of them that obey not the gospel of God? And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and sinner appears — 1 Pet. 4:17, 18.

THE time of mixture of saints and sinners in Zion is past. The judgments of God’s word must be executed in the land. God wants his ministers to compromise with nothing, but stand square on all the truth, and hold people to measure right up to it, and square their lives by the word of God. Everything that does not measure to the whole Word, God wants us to utterly ignore. God rejects every person that is not willing to square up to the whole truth, and we must do the same. What God’s word will condemn in the final day of judgment, it condemns here. May God help us then to measure to the whole truth, and holt others to do the same. But says one. It will cut off the great mass of professors, and even many professing to be saints in the evening light. We cannot help that; the time has come that men and women must be saved to the word of God. We have seen, among some, in the past, too much of a compromising spirit, and the result would be that many would profess to get saved out this way without getting saved to the word of God. My brethren, this must not be. Judgment must go forth. Where will it begin? Ans. “At the house of God.” (The church, 1 Tim. 3:15.) We will now notice who must not judge.

1ST. HYPOCRITES.

“Judge not, that ye be not judged, * * * And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye. Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then thou shalt see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.” — Mat. 7:1-5.

2D. BABES IN CHRIST.

“For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” — Heb. 5:12-14.

In the above we see (1) that hypocrites have no right to judge, because “evil men understand not judgment.” (Prov. 28:5.) Yet we find very often when people get crooked and out of God’s order by looking through the devil’s glasses, they begin to think every body else is crooked, and they are all right. So they go to picking and finding fault with God’s people, trying to pull motes out of every body’s eyes, (They generally punch more eyes out than they get motes out of.) ‘and behold, a beam is in their own eyes;’ i. e., the wrong is all in themselves. Such cannot judge. (2) And, again, young converts are not in a proper condition to judge until they “bcome of full age” (sanctified wholly), and receive the Holy Ghost, that they may be able “to discern good and evil.” We will next notice who must judge.

1ST. THE SPIRITUAL.

“But he that is spiritual judgeth [discerneth] all things, yet he himself is judged [discerned] of no man.” — 1 Cor. 2:15.

2D. THE SAINTS.

“Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? Know ye not that we shall judge angels? How much more things that pertain to this life? I then ye have judgment of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church.” — 1 Cor. 6:2-4. As ambassadors of God, we have all the authority and power of heaven to execute judgment upon everything that is not square on the word of God. “Let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.” “Zion shall be filled with judgment and righteousness.” “And all the upright in heart shall follow it.” “Yea, it is joy to the just to do judgment.” — Prov. 21:15.

WHEN ARE WE TO JUDGE?

Ans. Only when we stand on the whole truth, and are filled with the Spirit of God. “And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.” — Ezek. 36:27. “But truly, I am full of power by the Spirit of the Lord, and of judgment, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his transgressions, and to Israel his sin.” — Micah 3:8.

HOW ARE WE TO JUDGE?

“Judge not according to appearance. but judge righteous judgment.” — Jno. 7:24. Many judge from the outward appearance. They think to shout a great deal, lay under the power, and make great outward manifestations, constitutes a child of God. It is possible for a person to do all this, and yet not have a particle of the grace of God in their hearts. Many, to day, have a good appearance, and outwardly appear to be very righteous, “but within are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.” Others are deluded of the devil. Satan is, to day, transformed into an angel of light to deceive the world. But the time has come when God’s people are not looking on the appearance alone, but are judging righteous judgment by the word of God. Hypocrites can keep up a good appearance in sectism, but not among God’s people in the evening light. No matter how much you shout, and “feel blest,” if you do not measure to all the light you have on the word of God, you are void of salvation. But says one, You cannot see into my heart. Well, that is true, but God has given us a detector, which is the word of God, and by placing it upon the people, it soon brings to light the hidden things of the heart. Yea, it is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Heb. 4:12. Again, the Word says, “Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him. Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God’s: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it.” — Deut. 1:16, 17. “Thou shalt not wrest judgment; thou shalt not respect persons, neither take a gift: for a gift doth blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words of the righteous.” — Deut. 16:19. “But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.” — 1 Sam. 16:7.

In going into a place where trouble exists between brethren in the local congregations, how are we to proceed? hear the first one that comes with his story, then take a stand upon that, and go to cutting and slashing at all the rest, thus giving our decision upon it? No: “first hear the causes between the brethren,” then let the word of God decide the matter, “for the judgment is God’s,” and not ours. And if the case is too hard, take it to God in much fasting and prayer. But if a minister should get out of God’s order, and be mixed in the trouble, should we not receive his testimony rather than the others? No: “Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; but hear the small as well as the great.” But what if he has been much used of the Lord in the past? No matter: if he is leading a crooked life, and “God has refused him,” he must be held to square up to the word of God, or be cut off. And again, some who are living out of God’s order, when God’s ministers come into their community, they put on a very nice appearance, and give much of their means, and thus expect to get through all right. But the time has come when God’s minisisters “do not wrest judgment, nor take gifts,” but hold every man, great and small, rich and poor, to the wore of God, if they never get a penny. When were the judgments of God to be thus executed? “Behold, the whirlwind of the Lord goeth forth with fury, a continuing whirlwind: it shall fall with pain upon the head of the wicked. The fierce anger of the Lord shall not return, until he have done it, and until he have performed the intents of his heart. IN THE LATTER DAYS ye shall consider it.” — Jer. 30:23, 24.

In the above prophecy, we see that the awful judgments of God’s word were to go forth upon all evil doers, and works of the devil in the “latter days;” i. e., in the end of the world. We are now in the ast days, the very time spoken of by the prophet. Praise God! Judgment has returned to the saints of the Most High, and they now possess the kingdom. Dan. 7:22, 27. Christ is to day seated upon his throne of fire (holiness. Psa. 47:8.) and his righteous judgments are now streaming forth throughout the earth. Dan. 7:9, 10. The apostasy (all sectism) is being consumed by the Spirit of his mouth (judgments of his word), and in a very little while will be destroyed by the brightness of his coming. 2 Thess. 2:8. Isa. 10:25. The object of this preliminary judgment is, first, to cleanse the church, and prepare it for the second coming of Christ. Rev. 19:7. In the morning of the Christian era, the church of God was full of judgment. (Isa. 2:21.) We have an example in the 5th chapter of the Acts, in the case of Ananias and Sapphira, how the judgments of God were executed in the apostolic church. At that time not a sinner or hypocrite could join in among God’s people, but all had to get full salvation. Acts 5:13, 14. But during the apostasy, to a great extent, judgment and righteousness were left off. (Isa. 1:21-23.) Saints and sinners were all mixed up together. But now we have reached the glorious evening light (Zech. 14:7), and God is placing judges in his church “as at the first [morning light,”] and Zion is being redeemed with judgment, and her converts with righteousness. Isa. 1:26, 27. While hypocrites and sinners are crying, “Judge not,” and sectarians are “howling for pain,” God’s judgments are coming down as great hailstones, and demolishing every thing that is not square on the word of God. Read Ezek. 13:10-15. Praise God! Let judgment come down as rain. Of this time it is written, “Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the water shall overflow the hiding place. And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.” — Isa. 28:17, 18.

For, behold, the Lord will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire. For by fire and by his swore will the Lord plead with all flesh: and the slain of the Lord shall be many. Isa. 66:15, 16. “And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the Lord, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein. And I will bring the third part through the fire, and I will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God.” Zech. 13:8, 9.

The above prophecies are being fulfilled to day. God is sweeping through the nations with his chariots (flying ministry, Psa. 68:17. Rev. 14:6-10), and they are laying judgment to the line [word of God], and righteousness, to the plummet [word of God], and the great mass of professors, who are not willing to measure to the whole truth, are cut off, and die, and become a great spiritual carcass, preyed upon by evil spirits. Read Rev. 19:11-16. Mat. 24:28. Rev. 19:17, 18. Oh my God, this is the awful condition of sectism to day! Rev. 18:1-4, 8. But out of all this mass of confusion, God is gathering a small, pure and holy remnant (Mat. 24:31- 33), and bringing them through the fire, that they may be ready to meet him at his coming. The cleansing fire is,

1ST. THE WORD.

“Is not my word like a fire? saith the Lord; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?” — Jer. 23:29.

2D. THE SPIRIT.

And it shall come to pass, that he that is left in Zion, and he that remaineth in Jerusalem [God’s church], shall be called holy, even every one that is written among the living in Jerusalem. When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning. Isa. 4:3, 4. Oh praise God! I believe the time is coming, and soon here, when the spirit of judgment and burning will be so hot in the church of God that not one sinner or hypocrite can profess in among God’s people, in the local congregations. But all those professing in the evening light will be righteous. Isa. 60:21. On this point, the Word says the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. Psa. 1:5. The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath suprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings? Isa. 33:14.

Another object of this judgment in the church in these last days, is to separate the precious from the vile. “Therefore, thus saith the Lord, if thou return, then will I bring thee again, and thou shalt stand before me: and if thou take forth the precious from the vile, thou shalt be as my mouth: let them return unto thee; but return not thou unto them.” — Jer. 15:19. “Then shall ye return [to the apostolic platform], and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.” — Mal. 3:8. In this time many are being “purified, made white and tried.” The bride is being made ready to meet the bridegroom. The earth is ripe for the final judgment. Evil men and seducers are waxing worse and worse, and awful darkness is settling down over the millions of earth. Gog and Magog are uniting their forces, for the last great contest. But “let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds. Let the high praise of God be in their mouth and a two-edged sword (word of God, Heb. 4:12,) in their hand; to execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishment upon the people; to bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron; to execute upon them the judgment written: this honor have all his saints. Praise ye the Lord!” — Psa. 149:5-9. Yours in Christ,

H. M. Riggle.

EDITORIAL.

_____

Bro. Clayton writes that those coming to camp meeting from Pittsburg and South-west Pennsylvania, are required by the Pa. R. R. Co. to purchase their tickets by way of Ft. Wayne and Kalamazoo, to secure rates. Last year some who came by way of Chicago could not get rates.

COME TO CAMP MEETING.

The time for the Grand Junction camp meeting is near at hand, and quite a number who could scarcely wait for the time to arrive have come flocking in, and the holy fire is burning in the hearts of the children of God. Souls are being saved and delivered from the powers of Satan. Praise the name of the Lord! Some have already come over 1000 miles, and found Jesus precious to their souls. Others are on their way. We expect one of the best meetings ever held on the grounds. Since last issue, rates have been granted in Illinois over the Rock Island R. R., and the Chicago & Alton to St. Louis, Mo. Application has been made for rates over the Burlington and other principal roads to the Missouri river, which will be decided in a few days whether or not they will be granted.

LOOK OUT FOR SHARPERS.

We desire to drop a few words of warning for the benefit of those coming to camp meeting, and caution all to beware of “confidence” men and sharpers, especially in the cities. In the past we have known brethren to be relieved of their money in various ways, while going to and from camp meetings, because they put confidence in strangers. In the city you are liable to be met by some kind, genteel looking man who wants a bill changed and has not time to go to the bank as he is in a hurry, — but in fact only desires to see your pile of money and change it from your hands to his, or perhaps desires to borrow a few dollars for a few minutes, while you stay and take care of his goods or baggage, while he departs — to return no more, and you also find he was not owner of the goods you were watching. Others will want you to take a walk with them, or call in at their clothing store, etc., only to relieve you of your money. They will even pretend to know you or some of your friends, and all about the place you are going, or will be interested in the same. Some will even profess to be saved, and claim to be seeking light, and if the case demands it, they will appear as honest and pure as an angel. Do not loan money to strangers, nor be too free to take up with them.

ORDINATION OF WOMEN.

A brother writes that there is a disturbance of the peace and the unity of the body in their place over this matter: the ordination of female elders and deaconesses. “Some of the ministers, he says, have already taken a stand against ordaining women, and are teaching it, and the result is division.” The brother adds, “We know all divisions between God’s people are of the devil.”

Surely so. Now we wish to say that every preacher or professed Christian that takes a stand against God using as he sees fit, as preachers and deaconesses female members of the body of Christ, and agitates such views, was either void of the Spirit of God, or is becoming so in pursueing such a course. We have never known that course to fail to rob the soul of the real Spirit of God. And as sure as division is of the devil, and the word of God says, “There is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus,” Gal. 3:28, so sure this contention against females acting in these callings when chosen thereto of God, is of the devil. The superstitious notion arises from the fact that “a man” is always spoken of as “desiring the office of bishop,” etc. But the same erroneous notion would exclude a woman from being born of God. “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom.” “Except a man be born of water, and the Spirit,” etc. Nothing is said of women. They are therefore, it might be ignorantly contended, excluded from salvation. An elder is to be the “husband of one wife,” therefore, it is thought, a woman must not be ordained. But it is also written that a deacon is to be the husband of one wife. And the same apostle who said so, commended Phoebe as a servant — DIAKONON, deaconess — of the church at Cenchrea. Rom. 16:1. He did not therefore mean to exclude women from either the calling of elder or deacon, no more than Christ did from the new birth. In the name of Jesus, we say to all who have been contending in this matter to repent, and pray God to forgive you, and hereafter let God use whom he will, and that is neither male or female.

LEND A HELPING HAND.

_____

Harbor Springs, Emmet Co., Mich.
May 15, 1895.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I feel led by the Spirit of the Lord this morning to write you a few lines to the glory of God. As the time for the Grand Junction camp meeting is near at hand, and there will be great crowds of people, more than the dear ones at that place can well care for themselves, we all need to lend a helping hand. Now, dear brethren and sisters, let us do this by getting together wherever there are a number of saints in a community, and make arrangements so we can bake and prepare provisions for the table, and supply the needs, and ship it altogether, so as to reach them in good time. And there will be other things that brethren can help to provide in this way that can help along the work, help to bear the burden and receive a benefit ourselves. In so doing, know that we have had a part in the meeting, even if we cannot be there. And if anyone comes from your place, you can send a large box of provisions as baggage. The dear ones at the Junction must get greatly fatigued during the meeting in caring for so many people, so do not be afraid of sending too much, but each one send what you can about the time the meeting commences. Now begin at once and ask the Lord what you can do, and you will receive a blessing for it. Faith without works is dead, so let us have the faith and works.

From a sister in Christ.

Dear Trumpet Readers: God bless you all for Jesus’ sake. I believe it would be to the glory of God for us to look at a few texts of scripture on giving. People do not always have the right idea of it, and when the Lord, by his Spirit, tells some one to send means to certain ones at a distance. they are apt to quiet their conscience by thinking the people in the locality in which they are laboring or living ought to, and will supply their needs. But this is not always the case. Sometimes the people would gladly help, but are not able; yet, they need the gospel as well as any one. Again, others might help, but will not. But we must do our duty there just the same. The Word says, “Sow beside all waters.” “Cast thy bread upon the water, and thou shalt find it after many days.” And we find the same example in Paul’s time. Let us see

2Cor. 11:8, 9 — “I robbed other churches, taking wages of them to do you service. And when I was with you, and wanted. I was chargeable to no man; for that which was lacking to me, the brethren which came from Macedonia supplied, and in all things I have kept myself from being burdensome unto you.”

1Cor. 16:3, 17. — “When I come, whomsoever ye shall approve by your letters, them will I send to bring your liberality unto Jerusalem. I am glad of the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus, for that which was lacking on your part, they have supplied.”

Phil. 2:30. — “Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death, not regarding his life, to supply your lack of service toward me.”

Phil. 4:10. — “But I rejoice in the Lord greatly that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again, wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity.”

And for encouragement, Prov. 11:24, 25 says, “There is that scattered, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty. The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.” Yours in the love of Jesus saved by his grace,

Della Gardner.

A WARNING.

_____

Dearly Beloved Saints of the Most High God: I feel led this afternoon to write a short letter to the edification and admonition to the children of God, parents and children.

We see so much of this sham modesty in the land to-day, people calling themselves the children of God, and are wrapped up in the pleasures and allurements of this world. The parents are mostly all to blame. First the parents have special social parties, oyster suppers; and they call in outsiders, the worldly and sinful community, and call it a big time. They do not realize that they are setting down and eating with fornicators; they are not aware of the awful calamity — the end of all time. They attend such parties first, and if their occupation detains, then they will very seldom be seen at prayer meeting, or Sunday worship. They are so careless; they also allow their children to associate and mingle with sinful, ungodly associates, giving themselves to every thing that is not holy, nor of God. It is sad! When they attend the meetings they court one to this “sect” meeting to-night, and the next night they court another party to some other meeting or party. And in the meetings it is seen they are winking and smiling at all who enter the house; and their parents are looking on and wish them much pleasure, not aware of the great adversary who is leading them all down to destruction.

Their children play waltzes, etc., and are not able, when asked, to play a religious hymn, still professing to be saints of God. If the parents are sinners (not right in heart), what can be expected of our children? If

Page 3

the parents are saved and sanctified (as they profess) surely their holy life will win them over to God. Children cannot remain in that condition very long. They cannot remain in frivolity and sin. The prayers of the parents will save them to Christ and from sinful abominations. It is high time for all that profess to be followers of Jesus Christ (especially those who call themselves to be saints) to have on the whole armor of God, watching and praying, that when he comes, we will have our robes washed in the blood of the Lamb.

We know that narrow is the way to glory, and few there be that shall enter. It is not every one that shouts. “Praise God!” etc., but those that do the will of God, God says, “Come out from among them and be ye separate.” And what concord hath Christ with Belial? what fellowship hath light with darkness, or righteousness with unrighteousness? And we know evil communications corrupt good manners. So we see that God wants his people to be pure, unspotted in this world. A holy priesthood, a tried people, a peculiar people. Praise God and the Lamb forever! Only such shall enter the kingdom of heaven.

It means a great deal to be a true Christian, a Bible Christian. This hypocrisy, compromising Christianity will never stand examination in the day of judgment. Let every one that names the name of Jesus “depart from iniquity.” And we are also told to shun the very appearance of evil.

Read 1 Cor. 5th chapter and Eph. 5th chapter, and we will learn who to associate with. We are to follow Christ. Well, how do we know in which way? We must study the holy Word of God dilligently. It is claimed to be a lamp unto our feet and a guide to our path. He will guide us into all truth. If we want to be right in heart, and are, we will consider the awful responsibility that lies on our shoulders, the charge that God has given us to keep to keep our children in the way in which God is well pleased.

May God have mercy on such luke-warm professors, and awaken them to their sense of duty, that their children’s blood will not be required at their hands at judgment, is my prayer. I remain yours in the faith of the gospel,

L. E. Myers.

AN EXHORTATION.

_____

The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock. 1 Pet. 5:1-3

As this exhortation comes from God, I am persuaded to say that it is entirely unoticed by many professed ministers, or but little heed given to the great command regarding the lives we should live, and the example to be set before all people in order that the gospel be not blamed, and to save the cause of Christ from reproach. Many teachers seem to forget the mission on which they are sent, and instead of the life of Jesus only being manifest, ease and comfort are sought. Some who profess to be out in the fullness of the gospel in this glorious evening light, go forth expecting to be helped more than to help. God help all who are doing thus to heed the everlasting gospel of light, and measure to the standard of eternal truth for Jesus’ sake.

Some go to certain places, even where there are several children to be taken care of and the mother overtaxed with work, and by lying in bed so late of morning are not prepared to eat breakfast when the family is ready, making double work all around, which leaves a wrong influence on th.. w.. household. Again, not … ..d with the “bill of fare,” … … ..stions are made as … … … ..hould be cooked, which has a tendency to discourage rather than build up. God help us all to set an example before the world that all men may read our lives as a living epistle that teaches only of the longsuffering and meekness of Jesus, the lowly Son of God. Good manners prohibit us going any place and make such statements as follows: “Sister — had O! such a good dinner when we were there yesterday. I desire this cooked that way; and that cooked this way. This is not the way they cook back East or West, and really, things do not seem to taste the same.” By all means keep a seal upon your mouth, and remember what the Word says of complainers. Do not be afraid sometimes to pick up the ax or saw and use them, or to help with the work indoors. We must have time to read, that is true, but a little exercise will only strengthen your mental faculties, and enable you to better understand when you do read.

Again, if we are ensamples to the flock, consider well this one fact, that there are many who think they are safe in doing as we do. I have been much grieved since coming to this state where the powers of hell have held complete sway for several years, as those who are pure in heart very well know as they have passed through these parts, especially of late. As I begun to deliver the wore in the name of Jesus, and judgment began to roll down, in regard to the life of a saint, telling what we must not do, one would spring up and surprise us by stating that “Brother — does that, and do you not think he is all right?” All the answer that could be given, is, There is something wrong somewhere. If I ask one why they drink coffee, etc., the answer is, Why Bro. and Sister — drank it while they were here, and said there was no harm in it, and I do not think there is, myself. When tested by the Word the answer came. O they just used it for medicine, that is all. To such let me say, there is no excuse for such actions. If you are called to preach Jesus as a physician for both soul and body, be sure and practice what you preach, if you cannot do that then “tarry at Jerusalem” awhile before you undertake such a task, receive the power from on high, then go and all will be well.

The Lord sends forth his ministers to rightly divide the word of truth, and to live in accordance with the same. May we all work together as co-workers with Christ, instead of leaving an example that will be a hinderance when some one else comes to preach the pure word; may the life of Christ only be seen. Be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 1 Tim. 4:12. In all things showing thyself a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, sound speech, that cannot be condemned: that he that is of the contrary part, may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. Titus 2:7-8. God bless this exhortation to his glory, and help us to walk worthy of the vocation wherewith we are called. Eph. 4:1. May we stand together, walk together, work together, and dwell together with Christ through all eternity. Amen.

GOSPEL ARK.

Parkersburg, W. Va., May 20, 1895.

To all the Holy Ones, Greeting: We can report complete victory over all sin through Jesus our Savior. Meetings have commenced on the Gospel Ark. Congregations are not large, but are on the increase. We have distributed many tracts. The salvation of Jesus seems to be a new doctrine at this place. We have not as much as found a holiness professor in town. We ask an interest in the prayers of God’s children that we may be used to the glory of God and the salvation of lost souls. Yours in the one body,

Dear Saints: I spent last Sabbath at Florissant, about thirty miles beyond Pike’s Peak, where God has a few saints. Bro. and Sister Sticksel live there. God sent them up there a year or two ago to open the way for the truth, and by living true to God and distributing tracts and testifying to God’s salvation, some have been wrought to the fold. Others are under conviction. Many think that when they get to the mountains they can get away from God and his word, but God follows them even to the remote and isolated mountain fortresses with his awful truth.

To All the Saints, Greeting: To-day we are praising God for perfect victory for both soul and body. Our last meeting was held on Bush Run, near Smithfield, Ohio, which lasted ten days. There were eleven dear souls born into the kingdom, several healed and seven baptized. The meeting closed with an ordinance meeting, in which the power of God came down, and the majority of the congregation were melted to tears. The meeting at this place started well. Two have consecrated, and we were much refreshed by the coming of Bro. Daugherty from England. Our address is 135. West South St.

Dear Holy Brethren: We arrived in Creston, April 4, and in the evening begun meeting. The truth of God went forth and conviction settled upon the people. The Lord gave us the victory, though there was much opposition from false and crooked professors and bitter opponents to holiness, yet God carried forward the work of salvation. It was a warm battle between truth and error, clear light and gross darkness, be tween the church of the living God and Babylon. We found a number of good honest souls. About fourteen or fifteen consecrations with clear victory in their souls. Among those saved out fully and clear for God and for the whole truth, was the U. B. preacher and wife, also the class leader and others. Hallelujah! Others won to and accepted the truth who we believe will yet be saved in the near future. The foundation thoroughly laid and the gospel seed was freely sown, which we believe will bring forth a precious harvest unto God. In this meeting two of my own countrymen were saved, who I trust the Lord will use to bring others of like language into this precious light. Bro. and Sister Chapman are trusting the Lord to send them forth into the gospel work after our camp meeting. Sister Davis, of Almira, was with us in this meeting, whom the Lord also used to his glory and made her a blessing to us.

The 24th ult., took train for Boise City, Idaho, which is located in a beautiful valley with the Reeky Mts. on the east and the Blue Mts. on the west. It is called the Gem of the Mountains. The work here is moving along rather slowly, but a rich school to us in the Lord. Pray for us and the work,

To the Dear Saints: Feeling deeply impressed for some time that the Lord would have me go north, I expressed my thoughts to dear wife, and after much prayer and waiting upon God, we felt that the time was near at hand. Also felt that it would be well, that as she could not leave the care of the family and be with me, it would be best for her to go east during my absence and thereby visit the friends, saints and the camp meetings at Grand Junction and Beaver Dam, if possible. We would have enjoyed remaining in our pleasant home and with the precious saints at San Diego, but felt the inward pressure to push out into the regions beyond with the Word of Life.

Accordingly, we mentioned the matter to the church, and believe that all expressed the one voice with one heart and soul, “Go, and God be with you.” We left San Diego, May 8, stopped at Los Angeles and found the saints on the street preaching salvation to the people. Next morning at 7 o’clock came a testing moment; the east bound train took from my embrace my dearest earthly treasure — my precious family. As they passed out of sight I felt an immense vacancy in my heart, and as I turned to face the world, the sweet balm of heaven, the Comforter, filled the aching void and I could truly say, Lord. I gladly sacrifice my all for thee. Moment by moment I leave it with him and feel the sustaining grace. We shall probably be obliged to send our children to school and therefore be absent from them much of the time. I remained at Los Angeles over Sunday and enjoyed the meetings with the saints. Started for this city Monday evening, arrived Tuesday morning, found Bro. Van Velden at depot. The brethren have rented a hall and the meetings have begun in the name of Jesus. We feel the victory of faith. Hallelujah! Meetings at 2:30 and 7:30 P. M. People are enquiring into this way, which seems new to many. Pray for me as I endeavor to hold forth the Word of Life. Expect to start for the Washington camp meeting June 10, from here, the Lord willing. Much love to all. Your brother, separated unto the gospel,

Dear Saints and Trumpet Readers: I can say with the Psalmist, Truly my soul doth magnify the Lord. I am praising God for what he has done for me in bringing me out of sectism and showing me the true light. It has only been a few days since the Lord saved my soul, and I have had more real joy in that time than eight years in the Campbellite sect. I realize the fact that I have chosen that good part which shall never be taken away from me. Praise his dear name! Oh what joy there is in the Savior’s love when we make a full ana complete surrender! It gives peace to our conscience, quietude to our fears, and joy to our sorrows. Dear ones, how careful we ought to be, for the world, the devil, and sectism, are all watching us closely. May the mercy of God be extended to them until they see their awful condition and accept the truths of the Bible. Let us live close to God and be humble, and we will learn precious lessons. God forbid that we ever try to elevate ourselves, but may we sit at Jesus’ feet and learn of him. Glory to his dear name! I ask the prayers of all God’s children. Yours in the one body,

Dear Saints of God, Greeting: I feel led to day to write my testimony. I am praising God for full and free salvation; have been saved about four months. Husband and myself and ten-year-old daughter were saved at the same meeting. God did a wonderful work for us, and we praise God daily, for the way grows brighter. Praise his holy name! There are quite a number saved here in this community. We have our prayer meeting twice a week, and God does wonderfully bless us. And to him be all the glory! I once belonged to the Methodist sect when quite young, but seeing so much meanness done, under the cloak of religion, while some were true Christians, but unequally yoked together with unbelievers, I soon became disgusted, and thought I would just try to do right without making any profession. I lived a sinner for twenty years, but when God sent his true ministers here, and the truth was taught in all its purity, he gave me a willingness of heart to accept it; and to day I am all on the altar, consecrated to do the whole will of God. Pray for, me that I may be kept low and humble, ready to do the Master’s will. Your saved sister,

Dear Saints: I am praising God for free salvation that saves and keeps me. Bless his holy name! I can truly walk in the light as a child of Christ. It is unspeakable how much sin the Lord has taken from me. I was convicted and sent to jail upon a charge of murder, with intent to kill. I prayed to God for freedom, and he granted me a discharge much sooner than I expected. I sat up in my cell for four days and nights without sleep, reading the New Testament and praying. But I praise God that he heard my prayer, and sent me to the Open Door Mission at 129 Custom House Place, where I met with such dear saints, who were willing to pray for me and talk about our dear heavenly Father and his loving Son. Praise God for these faithful ones who are working at the Mission, and whom the Lord used in leading me into the way of salvation. May God bless them and ever give them more victory over the devil and his works, that they may be able to rescue many mere sinners. It seemed that I was the chief of the chiefest of sinners, but I was led to Christ. I was a drunkard, opium smoker, a user of morphine, and all that a sinner could be; but the blood of Jesus saves me and keeps me day by day. Pray that I may grow stronger in Christ, for I am as a little child in the way of the Lord. From your brother through the blood of Christ,

CONSECRATED SERVICE.

_____

“And who then is willing to consecrate his service this day unto the Lord.” 1 Chron. 29:5.

IN these last and perilous times when all the powers of Gog and Magog are arraying themselves in battle against the army of the Living God, the real lack of consecrated service that is manifest in the hearts of many who profess to be followers of the self-denying Jesus, should stir the soul of each one of God’s true saints to a closer walk with God, and a holy zeal to pull down every stronghold of the devil. Down through the annals of sectism very little has been known of real self-sacrifices and consecrated service. But in these last days when God, by his holy word and Spirit, is flashing his perfect light upon us in splendor and beauty, it is impossible to please God without a whole-hearted, whole-souled service. The conscience must be “purged from dead works to serve the Living God.” When we take upon ourselves the service of God, all desires to gratify self or selfish purposes, all desire for worldly honor or gain must be completely eradicated from the heart. Ah! it means much to serve God with all the heart and soul. He will accept no other. He tells us through his Word to do all for him, and his glory. This leaves no room for self. But how is it? Is God a respecter of persons? To day we see some of God’s little ones forsaking homes, fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters, houses, lands, etc., going through heat and cold, enduring the scoffs of the ungodly, toiling night and day for the salvation of perishing souls. They have laid aside the pleasure of working with their hands for comfort and enjoyment in their homes for the upbuilding of God’s kingdom in the earth. But some say, “Well, that is all right, but I am not called to the field work. My calling is to remain at home and work.” But are you serving God with a CONSECRATED SERVICE at home? Do you think God requires less self- denial of you at home than of those in the field work? Do you think for a moment that you can be justified of God and work one hour to get gain for a selfish purpose or spend one dollar to lay up for future use when God’s cause is in need’ of means to rescue souls now? Have you not learned to work for God to day and trust God for to morrow? In the light of God’s word, not one of his children has a right to lay up treasures for future use; but labor now for the purpose of sustaining the body to continue a consecrated service unto God. May the Spirit of God carry these truths just where they belong. “No man can serve two masters.” Either we are serving God with a willing, whole-hearted service, or we’ are not serving him at all. With what cunning craftiness Satan catches and ensnares poor souls on this line, especially those whose natural disposition would incline them for the world’s goods. We have met those professing Christ who work hard, and when they get more means than they can use for present needs, they purchase articles of clothing, etc., for themselves, enough to last for years ahead, and then complain of being so tired from hard work that they do not feel right in their souls. Oh poor benighted souls! Little you know of the sweet pleasure of laboring for means to promote God’s cause without taking thought for self; and thus be living where the dews of heaven will shower upon your labors, causing the fruits of you labors to thrive and increase an hundredfold. Little you know how to trust in him who has said, “Take no thought, saying, What shall we eat, or what shall we drink, or wherewithal shall we be clothed. For your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.” “But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.” Are you willing to die to your self and your selfishness, and devote your time to the service of the Lord, and put your means into active service for God? If you are not, you have no right to say you love God, much less to claim to be his child. Jesus said, “If ye love me ye will keep my words.” Do you remember what Jesus said in Luke 18:22? I imagine some would turn away very sorrowful if they would meet Jesus and he would tell them, “One thing thou lackest; sell all thou hast and distribute to the poor.” The promise to all who obey this command is, “Thou shalt have treasure in heaven.” Oh, praise the dear Lord!

“’Tls so sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to take him at his word,
Just to rest upon his promise,
Just to know, Thus saith the Lord.”

It is so sweet to live where we have the benefit of God’s promises, and how unfailing are his promises to all who believe and obey his commands! A life of real trust and faith in God is a life of bliss in this world, and life eternal already begun and enjoyed in our souls. But how far shall we trust the Lord? We sing, “I am learning how to trust him, with” my life and for all things.” Are we, as ministers of God, taking no thought for our lives, but just listening for his call, ready to run at his bidding, trusting our lives in his hands? Are we, as children of God, trusting him for all things? Do we bear patiently the cold blasts of winter and the heat of summer, and all the discouraging circumstances of life with cheerfulness, working manfully for God, trusting him for our food and raiment? Do we, who have taken upon ourselves the duties of husbands and wives and parents, trust God for all things? Or are we taking God’s work into our own hands, trying to make our burdens less instead of living a life of faith and let God work in us both to will and to do of his own good pleasure? If we are children of God, why cannot we trust him? Trust him for all things and in all things whether married or single. Dear saints of God, I write as one who has not always trusted God. Therefore, I know something of the buffeting which Satan imposes upon those who fail to commit their way perfectly unto the Lord. And now, since I am trusting the Lord with my whole heart, and for all things, I am enjoying the sweet smiles of God’s approval upon my soul, and am proving the promise true, “The Lord will give grace and glory, and no good thing will he withhold from those that walk uprightly.”

Dear saints, it becomes my duty before the all-seeing eye of God to expose the deceitful works of the devil on this line. Some of you may remember of an article I wrote for the Trumpet about two years ago, on the subject of “purity in the marriage relation.” Part of the article was not published, for I upheld a certain doctrine and line of living in the marriage relation, which God’s word does not teach, which is a legal yoke, instead of trusting all in God’s hands, and which leads astray from the path of true devotion and love between husband and wife. I humbly confess, and ask the forgivness of all with whom I have communicated on this subject. I was inspired by the teaching of a paper published in Chicago, by J. B. Caldwell, instead of the divine inspirations of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name I warn all of God’s little ones to beware of this doctrine and never endorse literature that cannot be substantiated by God’s word. For I know by sad experience that there is danger in the false doctrine of celibacy, save for pro-creation. There is connected with this doctrine a dark spirit of bondage, and for some time my soul was subject to the terrible fogs and accusations which Satan brings upon all who fall into error. I thank God for a new and living way, and for the light of life that is shining in my soul. If we live in the Spirit, we fulfil the law of God, and walk in freedom, and Bible purity. Yours for all the truth,

Luella E. Henry.

BIBLE READINGS ON THE CHURCH OF GOD.

(PART SECOND.)

CHURCH, AS HOUSE OR FAMILY OF GOD.

But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 1 Tim. 3:15.

For the time is come that Judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that c obey not the gospel of God? 1 Pet. 4:17.

Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow- citizens with the saints, and of the household of God. Eph. 2:19.

Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named. Eph. 3:15.

And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; in whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto a holy temple in the Lord: in whom ye also are builded together for a habitation of God through the Spirit. Eph. 2:20—22.

WHO ARE INCLUDED IN THIS HOUSE?

But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end. Heb. 3:6.

THE BUILDING.

For we are laborers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building. 1 Cor. 3:9.

THE TEMPLE.

Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God, dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. 1 Cor. 3:16, 17.

What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s. 1 Cor. 6:19, 20.

And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them and walk in them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 2 Cor. 6:16.

WHOM WAS THE APOSTLE SPEAKING TO?

Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours. 1 Cor. 1:1, 2.

Nowhere in all of God’s holy word is a building, a place of worship, spoken of as being the church of God.

Howbeit the Most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet, heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest? Hath not my hand made all these things? Acts 7:48-50.

BAPTIZED IN THIS NAME.

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Mat. 28:19.

KEPT IN THIS NAME.

And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me that they may be one, as we are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost but the son of perdition; that the Scripture might be fulfilled. Jno. 17:11, 12.

HOLD TO THIS NAME.

I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan’s seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth. Rev. 2:13.

And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name. Rev. 3:7, 8.

WHY HOLD TO THIS NAME?

The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous runneth into it, and is safe. Pro. 18:10.

For all people will walk every one in the name of his God, and we will walk in the name of the Lord our God forever and ever. Micah 4:5.

Dear Ones: Through your paper, we would like to give praise and glory to God for answering prayer in behalf of our six-year-old boy, who was so badly crushed and bruised eight days ago. His lower jaw being broken in two places, his mouth lacerated and badly bruised, his collar-bone broken and some other bruises. The doctor set the jaw and a few hours later set the collar-bone, not giving any stimulants at all, neither has any been given since, not even a quieting powder. The little boy has said from the beginning that it did not give him any pain. It has not caused him to cry, only when accidently hurt. He hashad his right mind even from the moment that he was hurt. He is not confined to a bed: he eats soft food, feeding himself. We take him to bed with us nights, and he sleeps well, not making any trouble. The doctor says that in all his practice he never saw a case like it before. Dear brethren, continue prayer and praise with us. Your brother and sister in Jesus,

E. A. and L. M. Soules.

Dear Brethren and Sisters in Christ: We are glad that we are permitted to write of the great goodness, love and mercy of God to us in saving and keeping us free in our souls. While we have nothing to boast of in ourselves, we are praising our great Redeemer for it all. We ask all the saints to pray for us, that we may ever live humble before God.

Dear Ones in Jesus: I wish to say, God, for Christ’s sake, has pardoned my sins. He so sweetly saves me day by day from all evil. He has given me a clean heart, and renews in me a right spirit. I find joy and peace in taking the cup of salvation, and calling on the name of the Lord. Am free from the yoke of sect bondage. Was converted by reading God’s word, and the prayer of faith in Christ’s blood to atone for sin. Am not into the full, clear light of sanctification, as I desire to be, but have faith to believe God will soon give me a full measure of his grace. Have found the testimonies in the GOSPEL TRUMPET very strengthening, and have been edified very much by them. Have never heard one of God’s fire-baptized saints preach his word, but hope he may send them this way ere long. The harvest here is ready for the sickle. There are a number of the Free Methodist sect who are galled by the yoke, as I was, and are seeking freedom from this awful bondage. Have found my Bible a safe counsellor, and communion with God a blessed experience. God is doing great things for me, whereof I am glad. Praise his name! Saints, remember me when you talk with the Lord, and ask him that he will give me complete victory. They call me a “come-outer.” Well, I have come out of bondage to freedom. My earnest desire is to be an overcomer. “They that overcome shall inherit all things.” I have overcome much, and with God’s grace shall overcome all evil.

White Water, Ind,

Dear Saints: I do praise the name of the most high God for his goodness toward me, and for his loving kindness in delivering me from the power of darkness. I find his blessed words to be true. Oh such precious lessons! I find that the more we learn of God and the more we follow his steps the brighter grows the path, the easier the yoke and the lighter the burden. And I have learned of the dear Lord that “they that will live godly in Christ Jesus, shall suffer persecution.” “The grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly and righteously and godly in this present world.” This is a blessed way to live. Praise the Lord for salvation! I am trusting in God, and am saved to the uttermost. Oh how happy I am! I am not ashamed of the Lord. If I had been, I could not have written this testimony. I have started in this life never to turn back in sin anymore. Yours justified, sanctified and satisfied,

Dear Saints of the Living God, Greeting: We feel led by the Spirit of God to testify through the columns of the GOSPEL TRUMPET of my escape out of sectism. I was a member of the M. E. sect for thirty years, in all of that time I never heard the gospel of the Son of God preached. But glory to God! about six years ago one of God’s holy messengers, sent of God. came to Canada. I walked three miles to hear him, not thinking he woud say anything about my church (sect), but as the word of God came forth it surprised and opened my eyes to see the ungodliness and pride of what I called a church, while my own heart was filled with pride. The enemy of my soul did not want me to give up and leave my god; but thank God! the third time I went to hear him, I saw my real condition in the sight of God. And I can say to the wide world, I am out of sectism and sectism is out of me, and the great river of God’s peace and joy is continually flowing in my soul clear as the sun. Hallelujah! Your sanctified sister,

Jenet Griffith.

Dear Saints of God: I praise God for the privilege of adding my testimony with the many redeemed children of God. It is nearly one year since the dear Lord showed me the strait and narrow way, and gave me an honest heart to follow him wheresoever he leadeth. Praise His dear name forever! I am saved and sanctified by a second work of grace, and kept by the mighty power of God. I do love this way. Jesus is my Savior, healer and nearest friend in all times of trouble. I know he will never leave nor forsake me. Oh let us keep humble before him, following his precious example in love and meekness! A few of us began to hold meeting at our houses at Butler last fall, and we asked God earnestly to send some true messengers to preach the Word. And in answer to our prayers he sent dear Sisters Fry and Fink, and through their faithful labors, God raised up a precious little church. Now we feel it would be to the glory of God if some true messenger could stop and hold a few meetings for the edifying and settling of the little ones. Could Bro. Riggle come if God wills? or whom he will send. Your saved brother in the one body,

Henry A. Hoffman.
