My Experience.

(Tune, “Where he leads me I will follow.”)

_____

My experience l will sing you.
And thereby pray that it may bring you.
To the Lord, who wants to save you.
And is calling, calling you to day.

I was lost and Jesus found me,
Threw his loving arms around me;
I cried for mercy and he saved me,
And I was happy, happy all that day.

Then my heart was filled with sorrow,
When I found that on the morrow.
I was prone to leave the way so narrow,
And inclined to, inclined to go astray.

Again I called unto my Savior,
And again he showed me favor;
Oh how I prayed I might not waver,
But still kept falling, falling every day.

Carnal nature did control me,
But Satan’s lies could not console me;
For God himself says be ye holy,
And Christ says follow, follow me to day.

Then I found by Bible reading,
That my Lord I was not heeding;
But in dry pastures I was feeding,
And did not follow, follow all the way.

My Bible taught me sanctification,
And Jesus promised a full salvation,
If I would make the consecration.
And lay this carnal, sinful world away.

Oh praise the Lord that I believed him,
He cleansed my heart and I received him;
And by obeying, no more I grieve him,
And now I praise him, praise him all the day.

Though he leads me through the fire,
I know his love will me inspire;
And some day he will call me higher,
There to dwell and live with him for aye.

Now sinners need the invitation,
Accept of Christ and his salvation;
And he will change your dissipation.
And make you happy, happy all the day.

And now it word to the professors.
Are you sure that you’re possessors
Of perfect love, and not transgressors,
And slaves to sinful, carnal nature’s way?

E. G. Masers.

THE DEATH OF THE OLD LAW AND SABBATH.

_____

Continued from lost issue.

WHEREFORE then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. — Gal. iii.19. Now then we. will take notice that the law was not added until over two thousand live hundred years after the foundation of the world, and there was no sabbath given until it was given in the law on mount Sinai. The Adventists claim that God instituted the Sabbath at the time he finished the creation of the world. And for their proof cite Gen. ii:2, 3. — And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. It might have been thought of at that time, as God knows all things from beginning to end. But it was not given as a sabbath until it was given on mount Sinai. We have a positive proof of this in Neh. ix. 13, 14. — Thou earnest down also upon mount Sinai, and spakest with them from heaven, and gavest them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commandments; And madest known unto them thy holy sabbath, and commandedst them precepts, statutes, and laws, by the hand of Moses thy servant. This was the first time the Lord had made known his Sabbath to the Israelites, because nowhere else in the Bible is it spoken of as being the Sabbath until it is spoken of here, and this is the seventh day sabbath, the Adventists can not deny, because it the one spoken of in the ten commandments. Now then it is very plain to be seen, why the law was added. It was added because of transgressions, because of the sin, and backslidings and continual waring against God by the Israelites. Therefore God put them under strictest laws, to keep them in remembrance of him, and also of things that had transpired at different times. The sabbath was given to keep them in remembrance of the creation of the world, and also a shadow of the time when God would pour out his Spirit upon all flesh, and they should receive rest in the Holy Ghost, which Paul makes plain in Heb. fourth chapter. Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made. — Gal. iii. 19. Now if we will read the 16th verse we will find out to whom this promise was made. Now to Abraham and his seed was the promise made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many, but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. I do not frustrate the grace of God, for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. — Gal. ii. 21. But the scriptures hath concluded all under sin, (That is, all that were under the law were sinners. Therefore the law was not against the promise of God because they were yet in their sins.) That the promise by faith [and the law is not of faith] of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. But before faith [Christ] came, we were kept under the law, shut up un to the faith which should afterward be revealed [at Christ’s coming]. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith, (For by the law no man can be justified. — Rom. iii. 20.) But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a school-master. Hence no longer under the law. For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise [and not according to the law.] — Gal. iii. 22, 26, 27. For the promise that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect because the law worketh wrath, for where no law is, there is no transgression. — Rom. iv. 13-15. Now then if there is no righteousness in the law, and the law is not of faith, and by the law no flesh can be justified in the sight of God, why then preach up the law? Why preach an old dead covenant that the Lord declares could not give life? Remember that the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned, from which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling. Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm, knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for man- slayers, for whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine. — 1 Tim. i. 5-10. These are all the fruits of the law; because the fruits of the Spirit, God’s law, written in the heart is love, joy, peace, long- suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance. Against such there is no law. — Gal. v. 22, 23.

Now then there are a great many more scriptures that could be brought to prove the utter inadaptation of the mount Sinai law, and its sabbath to a Christian, but as we have given a great deal of scripture and time on this subject, we will only bring forth one more scripture. First, I will ask you Advents a question, the same one that Paul asked the Galatian brethren. Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? — Gal. iii. 2. Also tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law? For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bond woman, the other by a free woman. But he who was of the bond woman was born after the flesh, but he of the free woman was by promise. Which things are an allegory, for these are the two covenants [or testaments] the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage which is Agar. For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia [the place where the law was given,] and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children: But Jerusalem [The church of the living God. Heb. xii. 22, 23] which is above is free, which is the mother of of us all. — Gal. iv. 21-26. Ye that desire to be under the law. This applies to all Saturday keepers, as well as the Jews. Ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law? What law? Namely, the covenant, the one that was given on mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. Here we see plainly what law the apostle has been teaching on, which is “not of faith,” and which was to remain until the seed [Christ] should come, and all that are under the mount Sinai covenant are children of the bond woman, and are in bondage, and all Saturday law teachers confess they are under this law. Therefore it is not we that say they are children of the bond woman, but the word of God. Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now. Nevertheless what saith the scriptures? Cast out the bond woman and her son, for the son of the bond woman shall not be heir with the son of the free woman. — 28-30 verses. Many are the persecutions the saints of God have gone through because they obeyed the scriptures, in casting out Agar, and her sabbath. Five times of the Jews received Paul forty stripes save one. Thrice was he beaten with rods. Once was he stoned. Thrice was he shipwrecked, a night and a day he had been in the deep. In weariness and painfulness, in watchings of, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness. — 2 Cor. xi. 24-27. All because he opposed this law. Jesus our Lord and Savior, suffered more persecutions, on account of this law sabbath, than any thing else. At one time the Pharisees came upon him, and branded him as being of the devil, because he did not keep this sabbath that was of the law. — Jno. ix. 16. I have known Adventists, like those Jews, that were too zealous of this one day, that they would hardly do good, even on the Sabbath day. This thing of laying so much stress on one particular day, and trying to keep it holy and yet are unholy themselves and live in sin all the week is a delusion of the devil. Going to base-ball plays, shows and fairs, and other works of the world. Yet they are very zealous of the sabbath, very particular to refrain from all these on that one day. If it is a sin to serve the devil on the sabbath, it is a sin to do so on week days. This was the trouble with the Jews. This was why Jesus called their sabbath keeping all vain, because they kept the day with all tenacity, and their hearts were far from God and full of sin, and they were not careful to abstain from sinning all the rest of the week. This is not God’s plane of holiness. He wants his people to live holy lives every day, to keep one day just as holy as another. Can you not see that the Advents are teaching and living after the manner of the Jews? If thou being a Jew, livest after the manner of the Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews? — Gal. ii. 14. Remember that our Savior said, Except our righteousness exceed the righteousness of the scribes and pharisees we could not enter the kingdom of heaven, and so they missed all, while zealous of this same law and sabbath that the Advents are.

THE MARK OF THE BEAST.

All Advent teachers claim that all Sunday keepers,” bear the mark of the beast, which if they understood the scriptures and would examine themselves with the 17th chapter of Rev., they would find out that they have the mark of the beast, and are bearing one of the names of blasphemy, as well as the rest of sect Babylon. They bear the name of the “Seventh Day Adventists,” another the name of the ”Seventh Day Baptists,” another the “First Day Baptists,” another the “Freewill Baptists,” another the ”Close Communion Baptist” and I don’t know how many other kinds of Baptists, besides all the “Methodists” and ”Presbyterians,” etc.

When God sent his ministers forth he commanded them to go and “preach his gospel to all nations, and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” His gospel was not to organize sects, neither did they organize any. They only preached the word of God through his Holy Spirit, “which is the bond of peace,” which bound his people together. This state of affairs went on until the apostasy, when men, thinking that God was not able to build and govern his own church, went about to organize a church of their own, and called it the Catholic church, and then for twelve hundred and sixty years, nothing but dark Catholicism prevailed. This was folio wee the reformation by Martin Luther; he with many others came out of the Catholic sect, and openly denounced the Papal power and authority, but instead of staying out full and free, in the one body Christ Jesus, they organized into an other body, called the Lutheran church. Thus a daughter was born to the old Mother of harlots which is the Catholic sect, and in a few years another, and still another, until to day there are hundreds of these Protestant daughters of Rome in the world for people to join. There is hardly a town of any size that you can go into, but what you will find five or six of them, with old Mother Babylon at the head.

Now then comes our text. And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will show unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters. So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet colored beast full of names of blasphemy [sect names] having seven heads and ten horns. And upon her forehead was written. Mystery Babylon the great, the Mother of Harlots, [sects] and abominations of the earth. And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. — Rev. xvii. 1, 3, 5, 6. So it is plain enough to be seen who bears the mark and image of the beast. And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake like a dragon. This second beast which is sect Babylon, comes to us in a little smoother way. Instead of coming with a sword like the first beast, it comes to us like a lamb, and yet is a dragon in sheep’s clothing. Jesus in speaking of the old sects, and which is also true of the modern sects, said that they do indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness. — Matt. xxiii. 27. There is not a man-made ism on the face of the earth, but what you will find in them all manner of abominations and sin.

And he spake like a dragon, that is, he spake like the beast before him and exercises all the power of the beast before him, and causes the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire to come down from heaven on the earth, in the sight of men. And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth, by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast, saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by the sword and did live. The Catholics send out preachers to preach “Catholic ism” to the people, so the Advents send out preachers to preach lawism and no-soulism, and so every one of the sects in like manner, seek to make proselytes to their creed. Such preachers need to take Paul’s advice in Gal. i. 1, 11, 12, 15, 16-20; 1 Cor. ii. 1-8, and i. 10-13, and iii. 1-7, and xii. 12, 20, 25.

Again we read, “And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.” Yes, so bitter are they against the saints of God, that when they come around with nothing but the word of God to preach to the people with nothing for them to join but Christ himself, and try to persuade people to cast off the “mark” and “image” of the beast, — so bitter are they against them that they will sometimes stir up the baser sort, and cause them to stone, egg, and even threaten them with bodily injury if they do not leave. By so doing, they cause all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their forehead.” The first beast says, Come on, we will take your name, you have got to belong to us; we are the only church, etc. So like her, the second beast says the same thing, that we must belong to some one other sect branches, or else we can not live a Christian, and by so doing we receive the mark of the beast. Again we read, And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Yes, they don’t want anyone to preach, unless he belongs to them. The first thing when a sect preacher goes into a strange neighborhood, will be to show his license and letters of recommendation from his sect, and if his “license” and “letter” is from the Advent sect, the Advents will receive him, and if from the Methodist sect, the Methodists will receive him, etc., and if he cannot show his license, written by some of them, he is not received. But let a holy man of God come along, in the name of Jesus only, and with the fruits of God’s word abiding in him and the signs that he says shall follow them that believe, Mark xvi. 17, 18. And they will cry out, Away with him, crucify him. But as Jesus says, If another shall come in his own name, [sect name] him ye will receive. — John v. 42. But thank God here is wisdom, Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is six hundred three score and six. — Rev. xiii. 11- 18. Let. us hear the Revelator once more, and then we will be through.

And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God. — Rev. xv. 1, 2. Here is where God’s free children stand to day. Amen.

Renfroe, Miss.

Dear Saints of God: May the blessing of heaven rest upon you all. I feel led to write my testimony this eve, and tell of the wonderful blessings God has bestowed upon me. God saw it in his infinite mercy and wisdom to show me my awful condition, and caused me to halt in my wild career and made me to cry, “What must I do to be saved?” Then the blood of Christ cleansed me from all sin. Praise his holy name forever! Sometime after, the Lord showed me it was my duty to go on to sanctification. It seemed that all the powers of hell were turned loose upon me, but I still trusted and prayed to God, and presented my body wholly and acceptably unto God, then he sanctified me. Praise his name! And to day I am trusting God for all things. My wife is also sanctified and trusting the dear Lord. He healed me last week of the chills, and healed my little boy when all medicines and earthly physicians failed. There are many souls being saved here. The Lord is wonderfully blessing the people in the southern fields. Pray that the Lord will send more workers here, for the harvest is great and laborers are few. Many souls are perishing for the truth. We were so glad to have Bro. Bradley with us. We ask the prayers of the saints that we may have a glorious meeting in the name of the Lord at our assembly meeting in Sept. Pray for me. Your brother saved and kept by the power of God, ready to be revealed in the last day,

J. L. Harris.

Dear Ones: We are expecting the largest convocation of saints ever assembled in the South. Let all that can, come self sustaining. Bring all your friends you can with you, and all that can do so, come prepared to take care of themselves and some one else, as there will be a great many from a distance who will have to be cared for. THE BEAVER DAM, IND. CAMP.

Beaver Dam, Ind., Aug. 21, 1893.

This morning quite early, and last evening the precious camp of the saints began to break up, and the pain of farewell greetings succeeded the great joy of a heavenly feast of love and fellowship. The meeting dropped much behind the Grand Junction camp, in representatives from abroad, and in the real number of the holy people in attendance. But the glory of God was in the midst, and the Lord added to the church daily such as were being saved. Quite a number of precious souls escaped out of the ranks of sin, from old gray haired men to little boys and girls. And doubtless a much greater number were sanctified wholly. And all the children of God were much strengthened, instructed and edified. There was a very large attendance from the surrounding towns and country. Every night the large tabernacle would not seat the people, and on both Sabbaths great throngs poured in from far and near. Besides the regular tabernacle the very large tabernacle purchased at the June camp, at Grand Junction, was pitched on the ground, seated and filled with attentive listeners to the gospel. The order was very good all through the meeting. The immense crowds of people young and old all seemed to treat with respect and courtesy the sacred services, and all the saints of God. Surely in this country is this scripture fulfilled: “The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing. I will gather them that are sorrowful for the solemn assembly, who are of thee, to whom the reproach of it was a burden. Behold, at that time I will undo all that afflict thee: and I will save her that halteth, and gather her that was driven out; and I will get them praise and fame in every land where they have been put to shame. At that time will I bring you again, even in the time that I gather you: for I will make you a name and a praise among all people of the earth, when I turn back your captivity before your eyes, saith the Lord.” — Zeph. iii. 17-20. Where persecution and every form of opposition once raged, now all men, with very few exceptions, admit this is the only right way, and the love and truth of God has conquered all things before their holy light. Bless the Lord forever! Amen.

About one hundred souls consecrated to God, and many applied for and received the healing of their bodies. Several were buried with Christ in baptism on Saturday, Aug. 19, and in the same evening there was a very sacred ordinance service, in which about one hundred saints participated.

A brother remarked this morning

Page 3

that many people who never accepted the present truth before, this year listened with intense interest, gave sanction to and even gloried in the pure word of God. God bless the many hundreds of precious souls who gave such noble attention to the gospel of God.

Among the ministers present, were Bro. Clayton and wife from Pa.. Bro’s Palmer. Michels. E. E. Byrum. Achor and Shore, from Mich., Bro’s Schell, Warren and Co. from Ohio, Bro. Wm. Smith and Co. from the west, Bro’s Bolds, Strang, Dillon and Co.. Bros Speck, Andrews, J. Cole and many other workers and singers. O may the rich blessings of God truly rest upon all these loved ones, and all in every place who witness for God and his glorious truth on the earth. Amen.

Hollemberg, Kan., Aug. 22, 1893.

Dear Children of God: May his rich blessings ever be with you and make you to abound in His love. At the close of the Deerfield, Ind. C. M. we visited the church at Praise Chapel. From there I went to the Beaver Dam C. M., where the saints of God were assembled with much praise and glory to God, and his power manifested in the salvation of a number of souls, healing the sick, and in various ways. After remaining two or three days it pleased the Lord to permit a meeting with the dear peo- of Kansas and Nebraska who were assembled at this place. O how precious to meet with the dear brethren and co-laborers in the gospel of our Lord Jesus, many of whom we have never met before, and find them rejoicing in the love of Jesus. Truly the Lord is here in power, delivering souls, and establishing believers, and settling them down upon the word of God.

Bro. Geo. Vielguth from South Auburn, Neb. is here, and feels the Lord has called him to go to Germany to preach the gospel in its purity, and desires to go with Bro. Achor in Sept, if possible. He is a consecrated brother, with a family who are willing to remain at home and let him go for the rescue of the perishing. Only a small amount of the means have been furnished him yet, but he has left all to follow Jesus, and now as he is ready to be separated by thousands of miles, for a time, from his beloved family, if the Lord impresses any one to aid in getting the pure gospel to the German people in Europe, as soon as you read this, send whatever the Lord desires you to send, to him, or to the Trumpet Office for him and for holy literature to send them.

Neosho Falls, Kan., Aug. 28, 1893.

Dear Brethren in Christ: God bless you all. Since writing before I have witnessed a glorious victory in the work of the Lord at Hollenberg, Kan. There were quite a number of dear workers there who were much used of the dear Lord during the meeting who go forth from there to various places in the Master’s vineyard to rescue souls. We also met Bro. Daniel Fike who has formerly made an announcement that he was ready to go forth into the work, but we feel that it would be to the glory of God and the benefit of souls for him to first make his election sure, and prove his calling by remaining at home until the Lord sends him. Too many persons try to go before they are sent. It is one thing to be called, and another to be qualified and sent.

While on our knees praying one morning the spirit of the Lord impressed me that the saints at Neosho Falls were praying the Lord to send me to the camp meeting at that place, so I took train and arrived here Friday morning, and found Sister Fink and company, and others earnestly working for the Lord. The people in this community seem greatly interested in the pure gospel, and there is a good prospect of a glorious work being done before the meeting closes. The word is being preached without compromise, and the power of God is moving many hearts to acknowledge the truth.

The camp here is on the fair grounds, and is one of the most beautiful situations for a camp ground that we have yet seen. There is a large and very beautiful grove consisting of many acres of nice shady trees. It is near the Neosho river, just outside of the town. The Santa Fe, and the Missouri Pacific R. R’s. run through the town. These grounds are to be sold in October, to cover a mortgage of some over two thousand dollars. There are thirty- nine acres altogether, and if at least a part of it could be purchased for a camp ground, it would be the best place we know of for a general western camp meeting, and rather a central point for the western people to gather together in a general assembly or camp meeting which would be a wonderful help to many workers, and advancement in the work of the Lord. Such would doubtless be the means of wonderfully opening up and spreading the work throughout this western country, as never before. It would also dispense with the necessity and extra expense of other small camp meetings, or more fully equip workers to hold them. Now if any brother, or brethren feel moved of the Lord to do a noble work for the Lord, and can buy or lease this ground, do not be slow to act in the matter. Any one wishing to know more about it can address Sister M. E. Sain, Neosho Falls, Kan. This is a beautiful farming country and many people are favorable to the truth.

Dear Saints: We are saved and kept by the power of God. C. M. at this place closed Sunday night with good results. Some forty consecrations in all, twelve baptized and eighty or ninety took part in the ordinance meeting. There was a lack of workers, but what were there did what they could, and we trust the dear, ones are satisfied as we believe much good was done and God’s name glorified.

Bloomingdale, Mich., Aug. 29, 1893.

Dear Trumpet Readers: God bless you all. The meeting at Kendall was a glorious meeting. God met with us in mighty power; many souls were under conviction; some got saved while others would not yield to God and be saved. I pray God to help people see their awful condition and what will be their doom if they do not repent of their sins. May God help all who profess to be saved to square up to the Bible, and live what they profess, for Christ’s sake, and for the sake of those who are not saved. If we have salvation we will live it before the people, and if we do not live salvation it is because we do not have salvation. Please read Titus ii 11, 12. We went from Kendall to Cheshire grove meeting, where we met dear Bro. Eldridge and other brethren, where we stayed over Sunday. A few consecrated there. From there we came to Bloomingdale, where we will hold a few meetings if the Lord wills, and baptize some. Any one desiring us to hold meetings, address us at Bloomingdale, Mich.

Dear Saints of God: I have returned from a short visit to Batesburg. South Carolina where I spent a few days preaching the word in a protracted meeting held there. The Lord wonderfully blessed our effort. Two were saved, and as many as fifteen or twenty convicted and determined to walk closer to the Lord in the future. The little ones were wonderfully strengthened and encouraged. We are now holding two meetings monthly, at a chapel known as Barton’s Chapel, seven miles from Augusta, Ga. I do earnestly desire the prayers of the saints for the building up of the church of the firstborn, for Satan is encompassing the camp of the saints.

Dear Saints of God: I am glad to report victory through Jesus. We have just returned home from Spencer school house, near Sand Point, Ark., where we just closed a week’s meeting with good success. Four dear souls stepped out on the promises of God and were sanctified wholly. Many others accepted the doctrine who are not saved, but we hope they will soon be brought out of darkness into light. Several heard the call and renounced Babylon. She has made a complete fall in that place. The leader of the U. B. sect got wonderfully stirred because of the fall of his pen. He made a great attempt to defend sinning professors, even the world laughed him to scorn, but we never saw better behavior; we never saw so much kindness manifest among people. Bro’s Lane and Waddell did most of the preaching. Oh how God did bless them in unfolding the truth. Praise his name forever! Several other workers were with us, whom God did wonderfully anoint for singing, praying and testifying. Dear saints, let us pray earnestly that God may establish his church in that place. If it be Father’s will we will visit that place again shortly. Your brother and sister, saved from sin and sanctified wholly,

J. T. and J. A. Courtney.

My Dear Brethren in Christ: We feel happy to report victory for Christ here in this place. We are all saved and kept so day by day, by obedience to Him that saved our souls. Praise God! The Lord is building a nice little church here in this place, that the gates of hell shall not prevail against. On last Monday there were eight dear souls followed Christ in baptism, and there are still more to follow. We leave this place and go to Warington, a city not many miles from here, to hold meeting for a few days and as much longer as the Lord leads. The dear people have given us a large hall at that place free to preach in, for which we are very thankful. We are willing to preach free of charge if only we could get places to preach in, but it seems that without means it will be impossible to preach to a certain class of people. We are praying to God to get to the hearts of some that have the means here in this country. Now dear saints, pray much for us. Do not just think about it, but go to work for we need the prayers of God’s people for the work and workers in this place. There is much to be done; many thousands of dear people going down to ruin. We are praying for wisdom and faith to go forth and work to the glory of God and the salvation of souls. Yours in Christ,

Dear Readers of the Trumpet: We are praising the dear Lord for real victory in our souls. Since our last report we have been laboring for the salvation of souls, which has been blest in their deliverance, and in the preached word. We came to this place July 29, in company with Bro. Hunter and commenced work for the Master. It pleased the Lord to send Bro’s Lundy and Markwell who were much used in the work here. We had complete victory during the entire meeting. Much precious truth was presented to the people, and met with good respect from most of them. A few who were quite sectish were enraged against the narrow way, but God’s truth prevailed and a goodly number were saved. One lady escaped out of the Roman Catholic sect, four or five out of the M. E. sect, and others blessedly saved from the great tobacco sin. About fifteen or twenty in all came out straight for God, and others who had lost the victory were renewed. A good many saints have been present during the meeting and seem to be doing well. Seventeen were baptized by immersion and received the witness from heaven of God’s approval. We have had a glorious meeting and pray the Lord to send some experienced workers to this field to carry on the work, as many doors are open for the gospel of holiness in this county. Bro’s Daugherty and Broce provided for the meeting. God bless them for their liberality. Closed with ordinance meeting last night. Amen.

Spokane, Wash., Aug. 23, 1893.

Dear Brethren: May everlasting glory and victory, be with you all. Amen. Praise God for his goodness to the children of men. We are all well, still gloriously saved to the uttermost in him. The meeting at Rice Lake, Wis. which lasted about ten days, was a glorious success for the Lord. We never entered a city with a more glorious prospect for a rich harvest and precious in-gathering of souls into the fold of Christ, than there. But when the meeting had progressed a few days, diphtheria broke out in the city, and as it continued to spread, just when the work was moving forward grandly, the city council passed a general ordinance, closed up all meeting houses, and forbade all public meetings of any kind, also private gatherings. This cut of short the work God in meetings. Oh what a great pity, but as in olden times, “Jesus could not be hid,” as souls came to us privately and sent for us to come to them, as they wanted to seek the Lord and consecrate all to him. We found a great many who were looking for something better than sectism and the dead creeds and dry, stale doctrines of men. One man said that if the saints did not do anything for God in the city, he would be an infidel thereafter. O my soul felt the force of that expression and melted within me, as I cried, O God, show forth thy power and save that dear man. The Lord did so, the brother was saved, sanctified and baptized. He also saw the sick healed and raised right up by the power of God. Hallelujah! A F. M. sister sick and confined to her bed heard of us being in the city; the Lord showed her to send for us and we went and did according to Jas. v. 14 and 15. The Lord wonderfully healed her, and this truly glorified God and established the work there. The F. M. preacher accepted the whole truth, consecrated his all to God and declared his freedom, his wife also, and nearly all of that class stepped out into the light, and others were determined to do so, and several others came out for the Lord. A great harvest would have been reaped there for God could we have tarried there two weeks longer, but for the city ordinance mentioned above. Three were buried with Jesus by immersion, and others will be immersed there. Dear Bro. H. Grant was ordained elder of the church of God. May the Lord ever make him useful, keep him clear and straight for God and very faithful to the end. Let all pray tor Bro. Wm. Halbesleben, the F. M. preacher, whom the Lord saved out into the light, that he may be fully established and led out further and further into this evening light; that he may be kept clear and straight for God and useful in preaching the word. The Lord bless and reward them all for their kindness to us.

The Lord then showed us to return to the church at Cadott, whom we found advancing, useful and active in the cause, holding four and five meetings a week, besides Sunday school. The Lord had saved one or two during our absence from them. We tarried over Sabbath and the Lord gave us a glorious refreshing. Two more were saved. God ever bless and keep them all faithful to the end Some one annointed of the Lord and able to declare the whole counsel of God and defend the truth in wisdom, ought to by all means enter Wisconsin as early as September, and spend the fall and as long as the Lord is willing to labor, for the Lord. Whosoever goes, by getting permits over the Wis. Cen., the C. & N. W. system, and the C. M. & St. Paul, these roads will take you most anywhere in that state. Do not fail to go to Rice Lake especially, Arthur and at many other points. From there we went to St. Paul, Minn., where the Lord opened the way for us to stop several hours, and we were indeed kindly entertained by the young men of the Gospel Mission and a Sister Smith. We had the privilege of lifting up Jesus through the word in a large street meeting of over 400 people, and we were invited to return to the city again. Here also is another great field of labor for the gospel and many anxiously waiting for the truth. Some company should enter that city with a tabernacle and hold the fort in Jesus’ name. The Lord hasten some of his flying angels to St. Paul.

The 9th inst. we took train for this state and after a long steady ride of 1512 miles, for forty-nine hours and twenty-five minutes, we arrived safe and happy in Spokane. Thank God! We held one meeting in the People’s Tabernale with very good effect for the Lord. As soon as the Lord wills we expect to hold a siege in that city. We are now holding a grove meeting at Peone, fourteen miles north of that city, with night meetings in a hall. The Lord is working gloriously. Good interest and attention, and good attendance. The people are accepting the truth, and hands raised for our prayers. Let all pray earnestly for us and the success of the gospel and the work of God out here, for we truly feel the need of your prayers, dear saints, as never before, that we be ever kept very meek and humble, fully qualified in the annointing for the work on the coast. Amen. Love to all. Address us as above. Yours in him and kept,

ONE CHURCH.

_____

WHAT is the church? Ans. 1. A given number of Christians associated together for the worship of God according to the scripture. Acts xiv. 23-27. 2. The whole number or collective body of Christians throughout the world. Matt. xvi. 18. 3. The whole number of Christians in heaven and earth. Eph. iii. 15.

Bible proof for the same, that there is but one church. — For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body. — 1 Cor. xii. 13. What is the body? Now ye are the body of Christ and members in particular. — xii. 37. Christ has but one body and one head, and he [Christ] is the head of the body the church. God has set the members in the body as it hath pleased him. God hath set some in the church: first apostles, secondly prophets; thirdly teachers; after that miracles, then gifts of healing, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. Diverse or diversity means different; here it means different languages. God says this gospel must be preached among all nations. So all that get saved through the preaching are in the church, so that makes diversity of tongues, different languages.

Bible proof that the church is God’s people. If therefore the whole church be come together into one place and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad? — 1 Cor. xiv. 23. Peter therefore was in prison, but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him. For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers. — 1 Pet. iii. 12. Now what is a righteous man? If ye know that he [God] is righteous ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him. — 1 Jno. ii. 29. And whosoever is of God doth not commit sin. — 1 Jno. iii. 9. And thou shall call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins. — Matt. i. 21. So the church is composed of saved people. Paul says, persecuted the church of God and wasted it. As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering into every house and haling men and women, committed them to prison. So we see that saved men and women are the church. Let us see what Paul says to the Ephesians. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for it; that he might sanctify and cleanse it. — Eph. v. 25, 26. Jesus also that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate. So the church must be his people. Jesus says about his church: And say also unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. — Matt. xvi. 18. Bless God; this church is safe, and I am in it. Praise the Lord!

This church is built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone. And Christ built his church over 1800 years ago. So the so-called churches of to day are not the church which Christ built, for these of to day are not 400 years old. The name of this church is the church of the living God, He is a God who is able to save people from their sins, and keep them saved if they will trust Him and watch and pray. May God bless his church is my prayer. We ask all of God’s church to pray for us that we may be useful in his harvest field. The harvest is plenteous but the laborers are few. Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest that he will send forth laborers into his harvest. I praise God for salvation to day which saves me from all my sins, and sanctifies me wholly, spirit and soul and body. Amen.

E. sect five years but had no salvation, but praise God forever, I do not have my name on any man’s book now, but I know it is written in heaven. We hear so many saying the holiness teachers are tearing down our churches; but if their churches were founded on the rock, all the gates of hell could not tear them down. I do praise God that I belong to the church that is built on the solid rock Christ Jesus, and that he gives me a salvation that makes us pure and keeps us without sin every day we live. I find that his yoke is easy and burden is light, and the way grows brighter and better all the time. Pray for me that I may keep low at Jesus’ feet, doing the will of the Lord in all things, also for my husband that he may be sanctified wholly. Your sister saved and sanctified,

Nackey Yeaman.

Dear Saints: I do feel led by the Lord this morning to write my testimony for the first time. I am saved and kept by the power of God. I do praise God for what he has done for me. He has given me health and strength and keeps me day by day. I do ever give God the glory that he has called me from sin and sectism into this glorious evening light. “He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning; for this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.” — 1 John iii. 8, 9. Your sister saved in Christ,

Sarah Dibert.

Dear Brethren: The dear Lord bless you with all the beloved everywhere, in his glorious work, which cannot be overthrown by might nor power of men, for it is determined to go on until all is fulfilled at the coming of our King and Master. Hallelujah to his name! My testimony to day is, that I can joyfully declare to all the world, that I am saved from all my sin through Christ my Savior, who has freely justified and sanctified me by two works of grace, wrought in my heart by faith, by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost. All glory, honor and praise to Jesus, who is worthy. Amen. My heart is fixed, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith. I am settled in God on the rock as never before. Thank God for the fiery trials he suffers us to go through. Though thay appear grievous at the time, they are indeed precious to our souls’ establishment when we endure them. Hallelujah! I am in harmony with all the people of God, love and endorse all truth, living in the pure light of the gospel that shines so clear and bright in this evening time of the dispensation. I am out of Babylon, and Babel spirit and confusion out of me. All glory to Jesus! Your brother all for Jesus,

Wm. Speckels.

Dear Saints of God: — The dear Lord has been leading me to write my testimony, to the Trumpet; so by the dear Lord helping me I will tel you what he has done, and is doing for me. I do praise the Lord for a present experience I have in my soul, of the saving grace of God. Praise his name forever! He is the Savior of both body and soul. I do thank him so much that he gives me faith to trust him for the healing of my body as well as the saving of my soul. Now I will tell you how the dear Lord healed me a short time ago from blood poison, caused by using medicine on some very troublesome corns I have. I was very near death, so near that I had sinking spells, and it was all I could do to breathe at all. I would have to be raised up in the bed every few minutes in order to breath at all, and something must be done in order to live. My companion wished me to send for a physician, but I told him that the Lord would heal me. So we complied with the command in James and sent for the elders, arid they came and annointed with oil and laid on hands in the name of the Lord, and praise his name for ever, he did wonderfully heal me instantly, for which I give him all the praise and glory. When the elders came in the house I was so near gone that I could hardly speak, but after the prayer of faith was offered I could shout and sing his praises with the rest of God’s little ones who were present. His power and glory just filled my soul to overflowing; and I do praise his holy name for it all. Blessed be the name of Jesus for ever and ever! Well this leaves me saved, sanctified and healed by the mighty power of God. Your sister, saved and kept by the blood of Jesus,

Maria E. Moore.

Dear Gospel Trumpet: I am saved this morning and sanctified through the blood of Christ. I feel it my duty to write a few lines of my experience in the service of God. I was raised to believe in the Methodist doctrine, but was not satisfied with their understanding of the word of God. I did not believe in being baptized until I had believed in Christ. And many other things that were not according to the Word; but I did not see half of the mistakes that are made plain to me by the evening light. I used to feel that it was hard for me to comply with the rules in some things. I also felt that santification was not taught as I could read; I was in bondage to the opinions of the pastor, although I saw he was not right. God then permitted me to go into the Salvation Army. I was more at liberty for a time; the light of the Word made me again to point out certain things that were not done according to scripture, and certain rites that were left out altogether. And when I began to ask about these things, and to complain of the things that were wrong, they became divided. But I had to obey God rather than man; and glory be to his name, I did, and although there was war in the camp, I got peace in my soul. I afterwards joined the M. E. sect. There I tried very hard to work for the Master. The Lord had healed my body in answer to prayer, and when I spoke of it, I hurt the feelings of some of the brethren. They said that the days of miracles were past. But I could believe it as possible now as ever, for Jesus had not changed. They told me that I was wrong to think of such a thing. The outcome of it was the most of them did not care to converse with me very much. The devil tried to make believe that I was wrong, but when I went to God with the matter I would get encouragement to continue, and glory be to Jesus, I did go forward. I then got among the Mennonites and found out the faith that I had was the same that they had, so I thought that I would turn in with them; but just then the Lord showed me that I could not stay there. And I waited more than a month, not knowing where I was going. The next place that I found myself was in East Jordan, and that was the first I knew of the saints. I heard some terrible reports of them, so I went to hear them for myself, and I was convinced that the reports were not true. My way is plain to be a worker among the saints. I do praise God for the privilege of serving him among those that walk in the light. Yours sanctified in Jesus,

George K. Langford.

Dear Saints of God: I feel deeply impressed of God to write my testimony this morning. As I realize this vast universe contains an appalling number of reeking, dying, suffering human beings who are afflicted both soul and body, by God’s grace assisting me, “I shall never hold my peace,” but shall use the tongue and pen, which are consecrated to his service — in lifting up a Christ, “who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases.”

Shortly after I began working in God’s great harvest field; I became severely afflicted with asthma (a disease which I believe I inherited). Frequent attacks came upon me, and my sufferings were truly intense. Each attack was accompanied with weakness and debility of my entire system, while for hours at a time my efforts for breath were unceasing, and it was feared I could not live long in such a condition. “But man’s extremity is God’s opportunity;” so I applied to the Great Physician who is always touched with a feeling of our infirmities. In accordance with God’s word the elders were called for, who annointed and laid hands upon me; though at the time I received no other witness than faith, which was the evidence of the work being done. After the prayer of faith in my behalf ascended to the throne of grace, several severe tests were permitted to come upon me, however, regardless of appearances or symptoms, I clung tenaciously to the infallible Word, realizing that God would not suffer his promises to be broken. “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” In the name of Jesus I maintained the victory and as a result, during the coldest blizzards of the past winter, in the state of Mich., I was exposed to the bleak winds and storms, night and day with victory over the asthma, and still am working for Jesus through all kinds of weather, with plenty of breath and good lungs to lift up my voice like a trumpet. Truly our God is more than worthy of being called wonderful.

About one year has passed away since God healed me of the asthma. Last winter, while working for Jesus, I discovered that my body frequently became weak and weary, almost unfitting me for the duties which were enjoined upon me. The dear Lord again came to the rescue, as he always does, and gave me the evidence it was his desire to heal me, and asked me if I was willing to use my strength to the glory of God in foreign lands. I replied that I was; after which, while being annointed for healing, streams of glory flooded my soul, while the mighty healing power of God penetrated every avenue of my entire being. The following day the Lord called me to assist my co-laborer, Sister Shoffner, in a meeting at Ganges. (I was stopping at the Trumpet Office at the time). So I took the first train going to Bravo, expecting a brother in Christ to have a conveyance there to take me to Ganges, a distance of several miles. But after seating myself in the cars, I began communing with the Lord and forgot to get off of the train at the station where the brother was awaiting my arrival, and he supposing that I had failed to come, went off and left me, and I was carried two miles beyond to the next station. So I had the pleasure of testing my wonderful healing, by walking eight miles and a half to where Sister Shoffner was stopping. The snow and slush was deep and I carried my valise and Bible along with the eternal weight of glory in my soul. Truly I can say with the apostles of old, “Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?” “They shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” As I wended my way along the slushy, snowy road, the presence of God hallowed that sacred little journey to my memory, and as the shadows of night were falling about me and the elements of nature presented a gloomy, sombre aspect, it was so sweet to know that Jesus the light of the world was shining forth within my soul, and all was peace and calm. During the wasted years of my former life when I rode in conveyances of ease and beauty, I was only an unhappy woman; but I do praise God I have learned it takes only Jesus, blessed Jesus to make us happy in this world. I have written this testimony only for the glory of God, feeling deeply impressed to do so for the benefit of others who may be suffering as I once was. To such I would say, Be of good courage; God can heal any sufferer, of the asthma or any disease. To day finds me healed through and through, soul and body, by power divine. To him be all the glory. I have excellent strength and power of endurance physically, with the sweet assurance that Jesus saves and sanctifies my soul. And I suffered no evil effects after my journey through the snow, though my clothing was damp and the evening cool. Faithfully your sister in Jesus, healed completely and saved wholly,

Birdie E. Fink.
