All For Souls.

_____

Earthly friendships all are riven,
Jesus’ blood their death knell tolls,
All that’s dear is freely given;
We gladly go in search for souls.

Dear old home and all that’s sacred,
Brightest spot between earth’s poles,
Clustered still with fondest memories, —
We part with all for precious souls.

Honor, fame and t..e ambition
Points us to earth’s brightest goals,
But there’s not in God’s creation
Half as dear as precious souls.

Kindest friends may nil forsake us,
Their rebukes may bum as coals,
Bonds may everywhere await us,
Still we seek for precious souls.

The wise of earth may think us foolish,
May turn ns from their sheltering folds,
May scorn the spot where Christ we worship;
We’ll press our search for precious souls.

Sheep skins may form our only covering,
Our dwelling place be caves and holes,
But while we fed the love of Jesus,
Our lives we’ll give for precious souls

A few more days of earthly conflict
The tidal wave triumphant rolls.
Soon will end our toll and suffering;
We’ll join above — God’s blood washed souls.

IS THERE ANYTHING IN THE NAME?

_____

WE often hear it said by sectarians, O! there is nothing in the name, we are all going to the same place, only taking different routes. Well but we are commanded to do all things in the name of the Lord, says the true saint of God. Yes says the sectarian, the denominations are all working in the name of the Lord, they are all called Christians. But ..ay the holy followers of Jesus, Is Christ called Christians? Is God ..alled Christians? Therefore behold, I will this once cause them to know, I will cause them to know my hand, and my might, and they shall know that my name is the Lord. — Jer. 16:21. Wherefore come out from among them and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing, and I will receive you, and be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. — 2 Cor. 6:17, 18.

Now if God be our father, ought ..t we to honor him enough to walk … his name? What would I think of ..y son if he should discard his fath..s name and take upon himself an..her name? What does God think … his people whom he has command-.. to walk in his name, but instead ..ve taken upon themselves their sect ..me, and call themselves Meth..ists, Baptists, etc. God forgive their ..s, and adopt them into his family; ..ey possess it but a little while, then … sake the fountain of living waters, ..d hew for themselves cisterns that ..d no water. We are thine, thou never barest rule over them; they were never called by thy name. — Isa. 63:18, 19. No they are not called … Father’s name. But all people … walk, every one in the name of … God, (sect god) and we, (the true ..ts) will walk in the name of the ..rd our God for ever and ever. — ..cah 4:5. Again the church of God ..called the bride of Christ, the ..mb’s wife, for thy Maker is thy … band; the Lord of hosts is his ..e. Isa. 54:5. And there came ..o me one of the seven angels, ..ch had the seven vials full of the ..en last plagues, and talked with … saying, Come hither, I will show ..e the bride, the Lamb’s wife. — Rev. 21:9. Should not the bride the … of Christ walk in her husband’s ..e? A woman would be called a ..e wife indeed who would discard … husband’s name, and walk in ..e other man’s name. She would … looked upon as a harlot. O ye ..itual harlot daughters of Babylo.. thou hast forsaken thy Fath.. house, and are written on earth. …. 17:13. You have been false … you husband, and have discarded his name, have become an abomination in his sight, and are walking in the name of blasphemy. Know ye not, you sectarians, that your human, organized, man-ruled system of curruption, falsely called churches, with your hireling priests, that careth not for the sheep, but love high sounding titles, even robbing the most high God of his title, and calling themselves Rev., Psa. 111:9, These are the abomination that maketh desolate, the mystery of iniquity that had already begun to work in Paul’s time. The damnable heresies. 2 Pet. 2:1, 2. Know ye not the sect names ye bear are the names of blasphemy, spoken of in Rev. 17:3? No wonder the woman, the great whore, the mother of harlots, was full of the names of blasphemy, for she now has about a thousand daughters, (sects) and of course they must each have a name. But hear ye the word of the Lord, God’s children are one family, or one body, and they all bear the same name. For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named. Eph. 3:14, 15.

The Lord shall establish thee a holy people unto himself. As he hath sworn unto thee, if thou shalt keep the commandments of the Lord thy God, and walk in his ways, and all people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the Lord, and they shall be afraid of thee. Deut. 28:9, 10. Even so it is, sectarians are afraid of the holy people of God that keep his commandments, and walk in his name. But in these last days God is calling his people out of Babylon, and every false system. They hear his voice, and follow him, and walk in his name. Yes upon Mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions. Oba. 1:17. And I will strengthen them in the Lord; and they shall walk up and down in his name, saith the Lord. Zech. 16:12. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name, saith Jesus. John 17:12. In the eleventh verse he prays the Father to continue to keep them through his own name that we might be one, even as he and the Father are one. But man has sought out many inventions, although Christ by the Holy Ghost again speaks to us through apostle Paul, and says, Whatsoever ye do, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus. Col. 3:17, and tells us again in the third chap. Eph., 14, 15, that his whole family both in heaven and earth are named after God the Father, just as Isa. prophesied it should be. And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all the kings thy glory and thou shall be called by a new name, which the mouth of the Lord shall name. Isa. 62:2.

Still the spirit of division that was manifest in the Corinthian brethren, which also Paul strongly condemned, has continued to work, yes, and will work till the Lord shall consume it with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming. — 2 Thess. 2:7, 8. How is the I faithful city become a harlot, it was full of judgment, righteousness lodged in it, but now murderers. — Isa. 1:21. Yes, it was full of judgment and righteousness, but her sun went down at noon, but thank God, in the evening time it shall be light; and he is again restoring her judges as at the first, and thy counselors as at the beginning, afterward thou shalt be called the city of righteousness, the faithful city. 26 verse. And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel, only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach. Isa. 4:1. You see God likens the apostate church unto a harlot. How shall I pardon thee for this: Thy children have forsaken me and swear by them that are no gods; when I had fed them to the full, then they committed adultery, and assembled them by troops in the harlot’s houses, and their prophets shall become wind and the word is not in them, for among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait as he that setteth snares, they set a trap, they catch men. As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit. Jer. 5th chap. God’s children are all members of Christ, members of his flesh and of his bones. Then shall we take the members of Christ, and join them to a harlot (spiritual harlot, or sect)? God forbid, saith Paul, and as Isa. 4:1, says, so it will be in that day when Christ shall come to separate the sheep from the goats. Seven of these spiritual fornicators (sectarians) will take hold of one man of God saying, Only let us be called by thy name to take away our reproach. They will find they are not sheltered under the name of Christ, our husband, but have been walking in the names of blasphemy. The name of the Lord is a strong tower and the righteous runneth into it and is safe. Prov. 18:10. Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honor to him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his wife hath made herself ready. Blessed are they which are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb.

__________

OBEDIENCE TO THE COMMANDS OF CHRIST.

_____

“JESUS answered and said unto him, If a man love me he will keep my words, and my Father will love him and we will come unto him and make our abode with him.” — Jno. 14:23. By walking in obedience to his commandments, brought about the wonderful connection between me and God-perfect love-oneness. Jesus says in John 14:15, If ye love me keep my commandments. In Matt. 28:19, 20 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.

We learn from the blessed word that he told his disciples, though they had been with him in the gospel work and had his personal appearance for example and teaching, yet they needed the anointing from on high. And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. — Luke 24:49. It was needful for his disciples to tarry for the preparation from God before they commenced to preach and teach. It is certainly necessary for each one to observe that commandment before they are able to do the Lord’s work. When I began to tarry with God I soon found it meant death to sin; and when I was completely willing to die to sin, after having been made alive to God through Jesus Christ our Lord I received the abiding Comforter. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. — Jno. 14:26. Oh how it does bring us in line with the word. Glory be to God! It will make one love sinners but hate their sinful ways; it will remove idle words and foolish talk from our conversation. “But as he which hath called you is holy so be ye holy in all manner of conversation. Because it is written, Be ye holy for I am holy.”

TESTIMONIES.

__________

MY EXPERIENCE.

Potter, N. Y.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I have felt for some time a deep desire to send in my testimony in favor of full salvation and a second work of grace. Oh how I do praise the Lord for what he has done for me. After serving the Lord in the way so many call service, such as being a great worker in the church, being a leader in picnics, church socials and so on, and very attendant on what is called all the means of grace, preaching, prayer meetings, covanant meetings, — yet God in his great goodness convicted me for the baptism of the Holy Ghost; and I sought it as I did conversion, and how the dear Lord did bless me, and I was so happy in him. I used to think these people who profess sanctification were those who had backslidden, but praise His dear name, I found by a blessed experience there are two distinct works of grace. So many told me that blessing was only for a certain few, yet I read, “Tarry in Jerusalem until ye be endued with power from on high.” Oh how earnestly I did seek the Lord and as he let the light shine, would walk up to the light. How many things I had to separate from, which I thought harmless, and then the persecution began; for the common professor could see no harm in those things, and I do believe they thought me crazy. Then began that awful word fanaticism, crank, but praise the Lord, none of these things moved me; but like Bunyan, I put my fingers in my ears and cried, Life, eternal life, and after two years of seeking, I found the pearl of great price. I needed not to have been so long, but j I stopped by the way to confer with flesh and blood. Then came the separation from so much that is called good, separation from the practices of the church of the present time. Oh what I suffered from persecution! but praise his name that he has counted me worthy to suffer with him. For if we suffer with him we shall also reign with him. How much I thought of my own experience as I read Brother Warner’s letter from Denver where he spake of his bodily suffering and of his more than willingness to go, or his willingness to stay in this dark world which had pressed so many bitter cups to his lips. Oh how I have longed to go home in the past two years, as I have been a great sufferer with rheumatism. My limbs are drawn up yet, but I have taken Jesus as my healer. Oh that all of the dear saints would remember me in their prayers, as I do belong to this family; for when we receive the baptism we are in fellowship one with another and the blood of Jesus cleanseth from all sin. Oh how I love to talk with God’s dear children. But let the common church member come and they begin to tell of what a smart preacher this one and that one is. May the Lord pity such and let his light shine into their hearts ere it be too late. Oh I had rather beg from door to door than to go back to the old way of fighting sin. How I do praise his name for these divine touches which come to us at times so unexpected. Oh where can we begin to praise our Savior for his goodness to us, yea even to me who was so mixed up with the world and the things of the world. Oh praise his name that he ever opened my blind eyes; for I was blind. I did think I was serving the Lord when I was only helping build up the kingdom of darkness, but now I am fully the Lord’s and belong to his called out ones. Praise his holy name! If the righteous scarcely be saved, where will the sinner and the ungodly appear? Oh that men would see that a profession will never save them! They must be made holy, for without holiness no man shall see God. How glad I am that there are some who are willing to go forth without the camp, bearing his reproach; for they shall have their reward. May God bless you is the prayer of your saved sister in the love of the truth. I want to add that the dear Lord has kept me free from sin fourteen years, and I have faith to believe he is able to keep me pure until he comes. Amen and amen.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: I received one of your papers, the GOSPEL TRUMPET, and it was gladly received, and it makes me happy soul and body, to read the testimonies of God’s dear children which he so loved that he gave his own Son that we might have life everlasting. It is grand to hear what God is doing for his children in these last days. It is glorious to know our Savior, Jesus Christ, the Savior of men. And I rejoice to know that the Savior you all have found and accepted is my Savior too. He has saved me to the uttermost and sanctifies me by the Holy Ghost, both soul and body. Dear readers, Christ is all and in all to my soul. I have given my all to him and he is using this temple of his for his glory. Are we all willing that God should have the right of way in us and through us? Have we asked the Holy Ghost to come and rule and reign and teach us whatsoever the Father has said unto us? Jesus said, “I will send the Comforfer,” which is the Holy Ghost, the gift of God. Have we received that gift? If not, ask the Father and he will send him to you. Jesus does all things in his own way. He has healed me many times; he is a wonderful physican. I have been overpowered with the Holy Ghost many times and seen many wonderful visions. Jesus shows his children heaven and all its glories and hell and all its terror and woes. Glory to Jesus for what he has done for me and what he is still doing for me! If I had a thousand tongues I would use them all for my blessed Jesus. The half can never be told, the love that Christ gives to those that do his Father’s will. Glory to Jesus! My all to him I have given, my time and talent, my reputation and voice; his lowly way is my choice. He has called me to his work and by his grace where he leads me I will follow, although I feel I am the weakest of God’s children, unlearned, but I have his promises he will teach me the way. The Holy Ghost will teach me my Father’s will concerning me. I request all of God’s dear children to pray for me that I may have much power with my blessed Master, that I may win many souls to him, for I am in the vineyard working for my blessed Redeemer, who has redeemed my soul from hell. May God bless all his children everywhere with his Holy Spirit is your humble servant’s prayer.

Your sister in Christ,

Sarah C. Hedges.

DIVINE HEALING
—OF—
SOUL AND BODY.

A New Book,
—by—
E. E. BYRUM.

_____

This book is just fresh from the author’s pen, and a glance at the contents is enough to convince any one of its interest and value to those seeking a more thorough khowledge of the Divine Being, and his dealings with people at the present time, as well as in days past.

The first part of the book very plainly marks out the way from sin unto full salvation, according to the teaching of the sacred word.

It presents the gospel truth in such a way as to throw a gleam of light into the pathway of the sinner, and enable him to see that there is hope beyond, through the mercies of a blessed Redeemer.

The BELIEVER is led to see the beauties of full salvation, and the joys in a life of Christian perfection.

THE HEALING OF THE BODY

constitutes the second part of the book. This consists of twenty-six chapters on doctrinal subjects, exposing and overthrowing false ideas and theories concerning the healing power in these last days, showing when, how, and under what circumstances and conditions God heals the sick and afflicted at the present time.

It gives a history and testimonies of healing from the time of Abraham, through the different ages, up to the present time.

The third part of the book consists of the

WITNESSES OF TO DAY.

These are wonderful testimonies of persons who have been healed within the last few years by divine power; such as being instantly restored to sight after having been blind for years; the lame throw away their crutches; broken bones are instantly healed; invalids who have suffered for years immediately arise and walk, after the prayer of faith is offered, etc. The author is personally acquainted, with nearly all the parties who have herein given their testimonies, and gives their names and addresses in the book, so that persons doubting the truthfulness of the same can write to the parties themselves.

It will be a precious volume to those who are afflicted in either soul or body. The chapters on faith, and also other subjects, will strengthen the faith of the reader, and aid in a closer walk with Him who is the “giver of every good and perfect gift.”

It contains 248 good-sized pages; good, plain print, on heavy paper. Neatly bound in cloth, $ .75. Library (half morocco), marble edge, $1.10. Send two cent stamp for special terms to agents. Address,

Bro. J. W. Byers writes from Los Angeles, Cal.: “We are expecting wonderful victory in the coming C. M. We have it now. O let there be one hundred sanctified ones from the other side the Rockies come over and join the blood-washed ranks in this decisive battle of God Almighty at Los Angeles. This sin-cursed coast has been shaken time and again by the voice of God, in warning of the pending judgement. Soon the final crash will come, and our opportunities for recovering souls will forever cease. O my dear beloved, you who have of this world’s perishable wealth at your command, throw it out into circulation for God and perishing souls. For heaven’s sake, my dear ones, do not heap up earthly treasures for these last days. O could you know the untold millions that are dying both soul and body, in these cities of our boasted nation, you could not withhold, from the bounties of heaven bestowed upon your comfortable homes of peace and plenty, to deliver men from wretchedness here, and an awful hell to come. O flee to the rescue, and great will be your reward, where moth and rust will not corrupt your treasures, nor thieves ever break through and steal them.” Amen.

“There is a dear sanctified Cherokee brother here, Joseph Bast, whom the Lord has sent to us to learn the way of the Lord more perfectly. He is truly anointed for the ministry and is anxious to return to his own nation and preach the pure gospel to his people. On his way here he went two days and a half without food. O how it has melted my heart to hear this dear man tell what he has endured, but he is ready for anything for Jesus. We are trying to keep him here until after the camp meeting. If he cannot remain that long he will try to be at the Wichita C. M., Sept 15, but needs the means to get there. He has a family at home. Who will assist in opening the evening light to this neglected race? Please give me the address of such brethren that are likely to labor in Indian Ter. or Southern Kan., as I think he should be with some one in the work.”

God bless the dear brother in Christ. Cannot Bro. E. H. Houghton receive him as a co-worker?

The trustees of the camp ground met on Monday, Aug. 1, and it was thought necessary to enclose the pavillion in order to protect the seats, and also that it will be more comfortable to hold meetings in during the fall and spring weather. Some windows will also be needed.

Moreover material must be procured at once to get a house ready for winter, for the family and workers to live in who work on the camp ground and land. If the Lord leads any to help in this good work, either by means or labor, address Bro. E. E. Byrum, Grand Junction, Mich. who was chosen to superintend this work. About one hundred dollars is needed at once for that purpose, also complete outfits of bedding, and household furniture. The workers there give their whole time to the work of the Lord, free of charge, and deserve the aid and prayers of the saints.

Bro. J. H. Lyall, of Waseon, Ohio, writes us:

“We believe the Lord will permit us to attend the Deerfield or Beaver Dam camp meeting. The Lord is blessedly calling out his people in this part of the country. He has some dear children here that he talks to. The Lord called dear Bro. McDowell out of an organization in Cleveland, Ohio, nearly two years ago. He was pastor there. The Lord called me out of the Congregational sect, where I had preached nearly three years, and subsequently he called us to labor together, and sent us out. We were entirely ignorant of the saints of God, or that there was a movement of such magnitude spreading over the world. We only knew that the Lord had opened our eyes to understand his word, and had called us out by his Spirit to himself alone. May the Holy Spirit have right of way in all his saints, that the government may be upon his shoulder

LATER.

Altemont, Ky.

We have been suddenly called here because of the illness of Bro. McDowell’s mother. The Spirit impressed us that he had a double object in calling us here. So we have been holding meetings in house owned by the colored people. They are taking the truth wonderfully. We have large audiences every night. Last night there were five at the altar; twelve rose for prayers. The Lord will get glory to himself.”

Yours in Christ,

J. H. Lyall.

Newcastle, Pa., July 22, 1892.

Dear Brethren: I do praise the Most High God with you. May the dear Lord bless you all. There are about four or five saints at Newcastle; They are fixed on the solid Rock Christ Jesus. We have no place to worship in but our houses; we have been holding meeting in Bro. Miller’s yard at Coaltown, the Lord being with us in mighty power. We have good order but no souls saved, yet strong conviction. We praise God for his leading Spirit. Amen.

Yours in Christ,

To all the Dear Saints, Greeting: May the dear Lord bless you all for Jesus’ sake. Amen. We returned home from our trip to the Gratiot camp meeting, found the saints all well and in good spirits, save one, and we ask the prayers of all of God’s children for that one that the Lord may deliver her from all doubts and all the powers of the devil. On our way home we came through Maple Rapids where we used to live, found the people anxious for us to come back to that place, which we may do some time in the near future, the dear Lord willing. Well we are praising God for salvation full and free, through the precious blood of Jesus. Your brother,

T. J. Cox & Family.

Dear Saints: I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony. I am praising God for full salvation, and this morning I have a deeper desire for the work than ever before. Last Thursday I went to Pierce City, met some of the saints, among whom was Bro. A. B. and Sister Viola Stanberry on their way to Norwood. May God bless them and give them souls for their hire. God has a remnant at Pierce. Praise God! Then to the Eagle school-house in McDonald Co., preached at eleven o’clock Sabbath. The Lord blessed the results. Then to Eva in the evening and attended the ordinance of baptism, one being buried with Christ in baptism. Then to Oak Grove school-house at night. The Lord blessed wonderfully in showing the corruption in sectism. The Lord willing I expect to go to Lanegan, McDonald Co, next Thursday to attend camp meeting conducted by Sister Sunderland, where I do not expect to be negligent of my duty in giving the truth to the people. Your brother under the blood.

Ellisville, Miss., July 20, 1892.

Dear Saints and Trumpet Readers: The Lord bless you all. Amen. I am praising the Lord this morning for his salvation. Glory to his name for victory! I have been quite sick but the Lord has rebuked the fever and I am in the field again in the name of Jesus, and in the order of the Lord, battling against the powers of darkness. I have just closed a glorious meeting at or near Rowls Springs, near Stix, Miss, The meeting lasted 10 days. There were 30 saved. Sixteen were buried with Christ in baptism. We had a glorious ordinance meeting, more than thirty taking part in the Lord’s supper and feet washing. Bro’s J. Clemons of Stix, Miss., H. B. Stephens and Bro. Hanesworth, and a minister in the Free Methodist sect, came out for Jesus and the whole truth, and followed the Lord in baptism.

I am still real feeble. Dear saints, please pray for me that I may be able to do my Master’s will. The Lord bless you all. Amen.

Your brother under the blood,

W. W. Bradley.

Berwyn, Neb., July 25, 1892.

Dear Saints of the Living God: May the God of all grace bless you all. Amen. We feel led to report, and let you know where we are, and what the Lord is doing for us. We I are still gloriously saved and rejoicing in a full and complete salvation. Praise the dear Lord! We came here from Auburn on July 1st., and commenced meeting on the 3d. in the name of the Lord Jesus, and the Lord has given us grand victory from the start. Although we had great opposition, and had some hard battles to fight, the Lord gave us complete victory every time. Glory be to his name! Quite a number have been made free. Six at the altar last night; two for justification, and four for sanctification. A Church of God sect preacher threw away his tobacco and came out and took a bold stand for God. His wife also got sanctified last night. The Lord is wonderfully blessing his word. Many are convinced of the truth and are under conviction, but can not break loose from the world. Brethren, pray for us, and the work here in the West. There are many precious souls here that want salvation. We may stay right here until the assembly meeting.

Yours in Jesus, saved and sanctified wholly,

M. M. Stover & Co.

Kenesaw, Neb., July 14, 1892.

Dearly Beloved in the Lord: This finds us at home and sweetly saved. After leaving the camp meeting we made a visit at Reddick, Ill. Had a real refreshing time by meeting old friends and relatives and expounding unto them the things which God had done for us. We feel that good has been accomplished by private talk with the people. Praise the Lord! He is our God. From there we took our leave, going down to Springfield, Ill. where we had made arrangemements to hold a meeting. But on going there found there was no place to be had for less than $10 per night, which we were not able to pay, but God so wonderfully led us to a meeting house where they had no preaching for that day. We were welcomed very warmly as strangers, made our request for to use the house in the afternoon, but it was granted for the morning, also evening. God wonderfully owned his word, one soul realized her condition, got down and gave herself to the Lord. Praise his holy name! In the morning there was a good congregation out and we distributed tracts and papers, and took eight names for the Trumpet. Glory to Jesus for the Trumpet for to call to the battle! It gives the certain sound. Many entreaties were made for us to remain, but we were called hastily home. Any of the brethren will find a hearty welcome there, also a place to be cared for at D. S. Kriebel’s. So if any can possibly stop off there while passing through from the Beaver Dam meeting going west and wishing to correspond, address D. S. Kriebel, Springfield, Ill.

Yours on the gospel altar, ready to do the whole will of God. Pray much for us that we may keep humble.

Grand Junction, Aug. 1.

Bro’s Grover, J. Cole, J. W. Daugherty, Sisters Shoffner and Fink, ourself and others have just closed a precious meeting in South Haven, Mich. It was held under Bro. Grover’s tent and continued eleven days. It was a great pity the meeting was limited in time. It was our purpose to begin early in the month and have the whole of July to labor there if the Lord will. But the tabernacle could not be gotten there sooner. The power of God was manifest in the meetings. There were some twelve or fifteen consecrations, and nearly all got quite a clear experience. Some were pardoned, others were sanctified wholly and some were delivered from delusive snares into which they had been taken by the crafty instrument of Satan. O bless the name of Jesus for his wonderful goodness and great mercy to the children of men! Nothing but the mighty power of God could ever have broken the chains with which some had been bound. Would to God that not one were left there in the chains of Satanic deception. There was no small stir about this way. Many were interested in the pure gospel of God. And as it usually is, intelligent and well disposed sinners all confess that this way is the way of truth, the Bible itself, while sectarian idolaters, especially preachers, went off spewing out the bad elements of their hearts, pronouncing God’s ministers crazy, etc., because they believe, obey and preach the word of God as it is in Christ Jesus. “Wherefore their ways shall be unto them as slippery ways in the darkness.” This day is this scripture fulfilled in all the land. The darkness that has rested on the Jews for 1800 years is passing from them and densely settling upon the Gentiles. And in these dark sect ways they are “driven on and falling therein.” Driven on by sectarian zeal and false hopes. Encouraged by their blind leaders to hope for heaven at the end of a life of sin. O how dark and terrible the picture! Many were anxious the meetings should continue. Should God’s church now and henceforth live faithful unto God, and keep the unity of the Spirit in the bonds of peace, as we hope they will, there is good prospect of the Lord adding to his church such as shall be saved. One man come to the altar and found peace in believing, after the last meeting was dismissed. Several were healed of physical diseases during the meeting. Wonderfully healed and blessed by the power of God.

Bro’s Michels and Grover, and the tabernacle, will be at the grove meeting four miles west of Hoppertown over next Lord’s day.

Sisters Shoffner and Fink go to hold a meeting at some point not far from Orchard Grove, Ind.

Bro. and Sister Palmer, Bro’s J. Cole, Daugherty, Bro. Daniels, ourself and perhaps others go to Deerfield camp meeting, thence to Beaver Dam.

Bro’s Lundy and Achor are laboring in Alabama.

The saints of God will have a camp meeting at Los Angeles, Cal. beginning Oct. 14. We are urgently expected to be there and it is possible the Lord may so will it. In fact it is much desired that we pass the Sep. camp meetings in Kan. and flee on to Cal. But this we do not deem proper. Since we have arranged to be at those meetings, and prospects are perhaps equally as fair to be useful there, we think it to the glory of God to follow out that line of march.

Hartsells, Ala., July 26, 1892.

Dearly Beloved Saints of God: God bless you all in his divine providence. Glory to God! We are made to exclaim as in the precious song of Israel and their great leader, Who is like unto thee, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders? Ex. 15:11. After the great east of tabernacles at Grand Junction C. M., in company with daughter Mattie and Sister Lizzie Carmichael of Neb. we went to Hoppertown, Mich., and held meeting about a week, where God did a wonderful work in convincing the people of the truth, and saving precious souls. It was a glorious victory for God, for the time we were there. Much more doubtless would have been done, but we had arranged to go to Ind: consequently had to close. Some escaped from Babylon and got saved. A few were baptized after which we took our departure from the many dear friends we had formed for Jesus. It is with joy we remember this precious season with the saints. We returned home, and the following day took our leave for Orchard Grove Ind., Thursday, July 1. Stopping in Chicago one day we arrived Saturday and commenced meeting in the school house the same night. Sister Henderson had done a grand work here in private work, etc. and made many friends to the cause of Christ. She has a great influence over the people. As our dear Father showed us before we came it was an extreme hard battle against the powers of darkness. For some days it seemed it would be a failure from human observation, but our faith failed not in the severest trials and reproaches, through all we had perfect victory in our souls. When souls began to get saved the devil began to rage, threatened and tried to drive us away, but hallelujah! we were not frightened, although God permitted some of the enemies of righteousness to waylay us at Sister Henderson’s gate, because one man’s wife got saved, and would not let us go in even to get our book-satchel, but struck us on the head with his fist, which did us no harm, but made friends to the cause of God. All glory to Jesus who careth for his own! Several were saved with precious victory. Some got light on Babylon and escaped. On Sunday night in the presence of a very large congregation that raging man announced we could not have the school house any longer. We thought of continuing longer in private houses, but Monday the urgent call came to hasten to this place immediately. How plain we could see the divine hand in leading. Glory to God! We decided to obey the call at once, although calls to neighboring school houses to hold meetings. So we attended to the ordinance of baptism Tuesday, in which five were buried with Christ, and at night had a very precious ordinance meeting, a goodly number partaking. Some of the dear ones who just escaped said it was the best meeting attended. Bless the Lord, his holy church is established in this place on the rock. Amen. Thursday we bade adieu with sorrow and weeping to the dear beloved ones at Orchard Grove, leaveing the girls, and departed for this far away sunny south. Having to lay over one day in Louisville to get rates on R. R. we did some good missionary work which we expect will open a call for the preaching of the gospel in Ky. We arrived at Hartsells several hours late because of a little wreck, but found them waiting and were conveyed four or five miles east where we found an appointment for night. There seems to be a great awakening over this country and several calls for meeting in different places, and the prospect is we will have to remain south for some time, the Lord willing. We are consecrated to go any place God sends. We would love to be at Beaver Dam C. M., but it seems the Master will want us here as so many calls are made for us. Pray much for us that God may keep us humble where he can use us to his glory.

Your brethren in the holy war,

G. R. Achor & J. F. Lundy.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT.

SCIENTIFIC FACTS RESPECTING FOOD.

(Continued.)

“In early times, — Dr. H. continues — when agriculture had not been developed, animal food was, no doubt, in temperate regions a necessity, as it is in cold regions now — there being scarcely any vegetables and cereals produced; — but this is not the case today. Every product of the vegetable kingdom, from almost all climes, can be had everywhere. There is no longer any excuse for the slaughter-house, and the annual murdering of millions of animals.”

Doubtless the appetite was created and the habit formed, while our race was far back in barbarity, and while as above stated, the largely non-cultivated state of the soil forced the savage or more civilized backwoodsman to the chase to take his food.

Prof. Voit, one of the most eminent German physiologists, and who has made many important experiments on man and his food, recently declared: “I see no reason why man, with well-chosen vegetable food, needs to go to the animal kingdom for albuminous matter. Most certainly if he does not need to go to the animal kingdom for albuminous matter, he does not for fats; and he would go in vain for carbohydrates.”

The result of thorough chemical analysis shows us that one ounce of protein, — food for the proteites of the body — is contained in a little less than six ounces of whole wheat flour, and the same amount of flour also I contains nearly four ounces of carbo. and a small amount of fats. So you see that out of about six ounces of wheat, there are about five ounces of the actual nutriment for the human system, the rest being woody substances and water. But it takes some over eight ounces of bolted flour to make one ounce of protein. When we come to the carbohydrates, the most extensive elements of human food, and of which we have seen there is none contained in flesh, we find one ounce of these nutriments is contained in 1.29 ounces of rice. 1.31 oz. oatmeal. In whole wheat flour 1.52 oz., corn 1.61 oz. Rye flour 1.4 oz. Sweet potatoes 3.75 oz. Potatoes 4.76 oz. Peas 1.7 oz. Buckwheat 1.7 oz. Barley flour, whole 1.6 oz. Cow’s milk 25.0 oz. Cabbage 12.5 oz. That is, it takes the different number of ounces above mentioned to contain one oz. of carbo. Thus it is seen that there is one ounce of the carbo contained in a little over one ounce of grain of some kinds, and about one and a half ounces of others.

We will give a few facts from the chemist’s table on the fats, one oz. of fats is contained in 1.12 oz. of butter, in a little less than 3 oz. whole milk cheese. In 14 oz. corn, in 16 1/2 oz. oatmeal. Milk 28 1/2 oz., buckwheat 38 1/2 oz., rye flour 50 oz. In flour of whole wheat there is one oz. fats in 50 oz. flour. About the same in peas and beans. While in potatos there is only one oz. of fats to 435 oz. potato.

We have seen that wheat contains some fats, and the rest is nearly all carbo. and protein. Therefore it contains all the properties of human food and men may therefore subsist upon it alone for a long time. The fats being a little short, butter is relished on our bread. By a long continued whim potatoes are supposed to be one of our most staple articles of diet. Let us compare the nutritive force of one pound of potatoes with that of a pound of whole wheat flour. In one pound of potato there is a little less than of an oz. of protein. 3 3/4 oz. carbohydrates, one-twenty-eighth of an ounce of fats. Adding these three together, gives us a little less than 4 oz. of nutritious matter in one pound of potato, the other 12 oz. being water and cell tissue. Now let us deduct from the chemist’s tables the nutritive force of one pound of whole wheat flour, except the outer shell. We find contained in one pound of whole wheat flour, the following: Protein 2.68 oz., Carbo. 10.56 oz., fats .52 oz. These added make 13.56 oz., or a little over 13 1/2 oz. of available nutrition in one pound of wheat which leaves only 2 1/2 oz. of waste matter. Wheat stands at the head of the list of food for the human system. By a similar calculation, oatmeal, and barley flour, fall but little behind, and all the other cereals abound in the elements of human diet. Therefore in dropping out flesh from the ordinary list of eatables, it would be necessary to use more oatmeal and bread made from whole wheat flour. “This, — says Holbrook — might interfere with the likes of many people whose nervous systems have been trained after the customs of ancestors not far removed from savages.” Of course he does not mean our immediate ancestry, but that of past ages. Having seen, by an appeal to the facts and figures of science, that the vegetable kingdom contains all the necessary food for man and was doubtless his original diet, how can we avoid the conclusion that flesh eating was the result of the fall, or the perversion of nature through the force of circumstances? We close this article with one more extract from Dr. Holbrook:

“The advantages of man’s return to nature cannot be estimated. That he would become a better man there can be no doubt. The fear that his force of character and energy might be abated is hardly worth considering. In our climate, if well fed on the best vegetable foods, he would have energy enough, but there would be, I am sure, far less of that restlessness and cruelty so often mistaken for energy.”

Beloved, we ask you in the name of Jesus to consider these things, and by a gradual process put away the evil and follow that which is good. Amen.

Dear Readers of the Trumpet: I will try to write my testimony. I am praising God for a full and a free salvation, and am walking in all the light that the dear Lord gives me. I had not been enjoying myself in the Lord like I wished to, and when I came to find out what was the cause of it, it was Rom. 12:2, “Be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” We roust not be conformed to this world. Lord help us to be faithful and true. Many may turn back but I never can; by the help of God I expect to do his will from this on. May the Lord be with all of the saints. Your saved sister,

To the Saints of the Living God: I feel that it would be to the glory of God for me to write my testimony. I have been saved a little over two months, and oh the joy, peace, comfort and happiness I have enjoyed in that short time, has been worth more to me, and wouldn’t give it up for al the pleasures of this world. Oh! praise his holy name, it is just wonderful how the Lord will take poor sinners like I was, and make them rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom. Sometimes when I think about myself it doesn’t seem possible that it can be me, for I am a new creature, behold all things have become new. My whole heart swells with praise and thanksgiving because I realize and know that I have complete victory over the world, the flesh and the devil, and oh dear saints, I want you to pray for me that I may ever be kept low at the feet of Jesus.

Dear Saints: May God bless and keep you all for Jesus’ sake. My testimony is that I am saved and Jesus keeps me free from all worldly things. I was saved last November but did not live up to the Bible standard in all things. I did not dress plain enough although all the time I felt perfectly humble. But one day while reading 1 Peter 3:3-5, I saw where I was in the wrong, and now I do praise the Lord that I can say for one that I never want to wear one article of dress that would be a stumbling block to any one. My prayer is that all the dear ones of God may not be conformed to this world. The blessed book tells us that if we keep the whole law and offend in one point we are guilty of all. Now dear sisters, let us all get low down at Jesus’ feet, doing his whole and perfect will. I believe that all the children of God will walk in the light when they see where they are wrong. May God bless all the dear ones of his. Pray for me that I may be found ever doing the will of God.

Saints passing over this way, come over and help us. Written by request. To the saints of the Most High God, greeting.

Fifteen years ago I made the acquaintance of a friend of mine and his name is Jesus, for he saves his people from their sins. Glory to God! I am one of his people whom he saved from all sin. It was Christmas day, at eleven A. M., when the glory of God came into my soul, at the old farmhouse in Maywood, Illinois. When I rose to my feet I saw the glory of God beaming bright in the faces of the saints. The bird in the cage was singing the praises of God, the leaves on the trees also were praising God, and the sun was praising God also, and I too, was praising God. And the Spirit said unto me, “Arise, shine, for thy light is come. For the glory of God is risen on thee.”

From your brother in Christ Jesus, saved from all sin, and free from all sects.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I am praising God for salvation full and free. It has been nearly four years since God for Christ’s sake forgave my sins. At the same time he healed me of all my different disabilities, neuralgia, sciatica, and a very painful cancerous tubercle of three years’ standing, all cured inside of a week. And praise his name, he healed me from the use of tobacco and coffee and every filthiness of the flesh. It was not supposed by any of my aquaintances that I would live but a short time, but when I gave up all and asked the dear saints to pray for me, the work was soon done. I was justified freely; a year later while attending a protracted meeting at Indian Springs, I obtained a higher state of grace. Thank God! I believe in doing every thing my blessed Master has told us we ought to do. This evening finds me living on the straight line of God’s word, on the king’s highway of holiness, living in the hope of the glory of God and a never ending eternity. Praise the dear name of Jesus! Dear saints, pray for me that I may ever remain strong in the Lord.

Your brother in Christ,

J. H. Bryson.

Dear Saints of God: I feel led to write my testimony for the Trumpet. I am saved and washed in Jesus’ blood, and O how glorious it is to walk in the light. It does my soul good to read the testimonies in the Trumpet and to know that we are all members of Christ’s body which is the church. I was for three long years praying and longing to meet a man of God that I could have fellowship with, and O what a joy it was to my soul when Bro. Michels obeyed God’s call and came in our midst. Praise the Lord, how He cleared up things that looked dark and straightened up things that looked, crooked. O what joy and manna to the soul to listen to a faithful brother! What will it be when we join the blood washed throng on Heaven’s eternal shore! Pray for me dear saints, as I feel the responsibility of preaching the word of God. Pray that I may preach the truth in love, for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

Editor Gospel Trumpet: Although not a subscriber for the TRUMPET, I beg leave to have the following published in its columns:

At the age of twelve years I was advised by two physicians to use tobacco for dyspepsia. I did so and for two years entertained the hope of being cured by the weed; yet my disease, instead of abating, became worse. After having been cured, however, by virtue of cows’ milk, and brown bread crust, I continued the use of tobacco, in spite of my failure to receive benefit from it. Having been warned by a Christian father, of the dangers, as well as the expense of using the weed, I repeatedly threw it away, but as often resumed its use. My Sabbath school, as well as my day school teacher, advised me to give it up. But despite these admonitions I continued its use, contenting myself with the thought that I used but a small amount, and could stop it at any time it began to overcome my will. But the habit developed later into an appetite, and before I was aware of the fact I found myself in the most degraded slavery with only a weed for my master. Having been for a number of years entreated by my faithful wife to give up the habit, I at last resolved to do so; but I found great difficulty. Moral courage seemed so give way, and I tried to summon my manhood to my assistance; but my sense of manhood was far beneath what it should have been, and I sometimes found myself in a repining state. That longing desire for tobacco would rise with a force that was astonishing, yea alarming. At last a friend handed me a little pamphlet, entitled “The Great Tobacco Sin.” I read it through; but before I had reached the middle my sense of manhood was so aroused that it slew the appetite completely. Thank God for that pamphlet! And may the blessings of our Father rest upon its author and publisher. I say God bless the pamphlet to the saving and rescuing of many who are now in slavery to the Great Tobacco King.

Yours in Christ,

Dear Bro. and Sister Byrum with all the Dear Saints of God: May God’s conscious presence be with you, and may “the Lord of peace himself give you peace always.” I bless God to day for a living faith which enables me to take hold of the Eternal and keeps me healed soul and body, with the blessed assurance that I am “accepted in the beloved.” I am still feasting on the precious promises. And especially do I feel to thank the Lord for this one: “All things work together for good to those who love the Lord.” O what consolation and rest this promise brings to every true, and tried follower of the Lamb! But the promise is only to those who love the Lord. I am sinking deeper into Christ and learning wonderful things out of his word. How sweet to learn of him, of the love that never changes, of the arm that never tires, of the eye that never sleeps, of the mercy that endures forever. O how bountifully we are provided for, and what blessings attend us all the way. What a friend we have to travel with us in this pilgrimage journey. Paul says in 2 Cor. 1:3, “The God of all comfort.” No sorrow but what he can soothe, no trial too great for his ability, or too small for his notice, the spire of all our joys.” Then Peter describes him as “The God of all grace.” Wonderful! Grace for every need, yea living grace and dying grace. Then we read he is the “God of peace.” Who can comprehend this? It passeth all understanding, the infinite repose of spirit, from which a stream of holy rest flows into our souls, and upholds and sustains us amid all the events of life. He is the “God of hope,” the “only wise God.” To whom can we go but thee? “Thou only hast the words of eternal life.” The only wise counsel that can guide us in the way of righteousness and establish us therein. How necessary, that we all have David’s experience where he says, “I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth.”

Let us remember this is not only a privilege but a command. To offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually. That is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. Heb. 13:15. My heart rejoices in God my Savior for the blessed union and communion I have with him day by day. What a privilege to converse with the blessed Son of God and how essential that his children pray. If it was necessary for Christ to pray, surely it is our duty. And how many times we read in the word where Christ prayed to the Father. I do feel to praise my heavenly Father for the witness of the Holy Spirit with ours. One of the sweetest comforts I had when the dear Lord sanctified my soul (which was six years ago) was the witness given that I was sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.

Dear ones, what can we ask more than Jesus holds out and offers to us, with infinite hands to bestow. Let us get close to him, that we may better realize our poor weak human nature the blessings so infinitely provided, and not forget that “this God is our God forever and ever.

Your saved sister,

Mary R. Malcomson.
