COME TO THE FOUNTAIN.

__________

Sinner, Jesus stands appealing;
Don’t you hear the welcome call,
Come, poor sinner to the fountain,
It is offered free to all.

Plunge your soul beneath the current,
Flowing from the Savior’s side;
Only trust him, he will save you,
Till your soul is satisfied.

Sinner, can you slight the Savior?
Will you thrust him from your arms?
See, he died your soul to ransom;
Now he calls you to his arms.

Hear, O hear the voice of Jesus,
Flee for refuge while you may:
Heed the call. O do not linger;
Come to Jesus, come to day.

Will you by his grace rejecting,
Trample on his precious blood,
Shed upon the cross of Calvary
To redeem your soul to God?

Come, and at the cross of Jesus
Cast your weary burdened soul;
He will comfort, cleanse, relieve you,
And his blood will make you whole.

Come, and seek the blessed Savior;
Taste the fullness of his love;
Richer blessings he will give you,
More than e’er you could believe.

Come then, choose him as your portion,
Grasp the promise with the crown:
He’ll to joys eternal bear you,
Safe on wings of love divine.

George M. Moore.

Prayer.

_____

PRAY without ceasing. 1 Thes. 5:17. We believe Paul meant just what he said when he wrote this, that is, pray always or continually. Luke says, “And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray and not to faint. Luke 18:1.

Now how many people do we find, who profess salvation, even in this evening light, who do not seem to notice, or at least to heed this and many other scriptures teaching on the same line. We are led to believe that the cause of so much leanness and formality, and so little power among some of the professed children of God, is a lack of prayer. Many places we go in our travels, there seems to be a lack of prayer; some places family worship seems to be almost an entire stranger, while at others, some ONE of the family will offer a prayer in family worship, and seem to rest satisfied that all have done their whole duty to God, and yet we should not consider it as a mere duty but also as a privilege.

Dear brethren and sisters, we have many precious lessons to learn, and I am only young in God’s cause, but my soul is daily expanding and advancing for God, and I feel that one of the essentials to a happy, triumphant, Christian life is prayer. How many errors we could trace to a lack of prayer, such as rushing into things headlong without asking the guidance of God’s Spirit. Frequently we hear the remark from some professed children of God, “I never thought of its being any harm,” or “I hadn’t looked at it in that way before;” when a little talk with God before the deed was done would have set matters all right.

“If any of you lack wisdom let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him.” James 1:5 Paul says, “Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good Rom. 12:21. I have found in my experience that when the enemy comes in like a flood (Isa. 59:19), and we are sorely tried, the only way to successfully OVERCOME is to go to God in prayer. Luke 21:36 “Be careful for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto the Lord.” Phil. 4:6.

Some may make the excuse, as some have to me in times past, that they could not make an able prayer. Dear ones, God will not accept any such excuse. Do the best you can and ask God to help you, and then we have some encouragement, — “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities; for we know not what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Rom. 8:26.

Now let us notice when we are to pray. The psalmist says, “Evening and morning and at noon will I pray, and cry aloud, and he shall hear my voice. Psa. 55:17. Again, we are commanded to not be weary in well doing. Gal. 6:9. Now the time was in my experience when I looked upon prayer, more as a duty than a privilege and a pleasure, and if I would pray in public I would feel like saying just a few words of prayer in secret or in family worship, not feeling it to be necessary. I found that when I felt a little tired, the devil always made me feel more tired, so I would defer praying. But God has shown me a different line and now I have real pleasure in praying “everywhere, lifting up holy hands without wrath and doubting.” 1 Tim. 2:8. I find some who seem to have the first part of my experience, and one or two prayers a day is all they are able for.

We can never pray too much, and should always be ready to offer up an earnest prayer to God. Pray to GOD, without thinking what the listeners think of “your” prayer. Some places, in family worship, there seems to be no life, the prayers are a drag; it was not done with as much fervency as it should be and almost every one seemed glad when it was over, considering it quite a cross to bear. No matter where we pray, let us do away with this old sect formality and let us pray fervently and in the Spirit. “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” Jas. 5:16.

It is no wonder some people are lean in their souls and never have the victory, when they will not take up the cross in prayer. Some it seems would like for some one else to always do their praying for them. At one place we stayed about a week with a family of professed saints, and in all that time we never heard one of the family pray; but when it came time for worship (as it did occasionally with them), some one of the family would always say, Bro. R., you pray for us. Better get a prayer wheel at once and not ask others to pray for you until you can pray SOME for yourself. These people have been professing in this light eight or nine years; they are always “just out of money” when any of God’s ministers are around and are in need, and then are down to the altar almost every meeting, and yet NEVER get a settled experience. God is weary with (such) repentings. Jer. 15:6. God has no drones, but will have an active, energetic, wide awake people; and if we expect to wear the crown we must do our whole duty in all these lines. If we want to keep in line with the present truth, many will have to move forward at a much more rapid rate of speed than heretofore.

Some professed workers take the plea that they don’t feel LED to pray, and they don’t feel led to do this and that. One professed brother, who has since ceased to profess, who saw he was called to preach and even tried it, said he “didn’t feel led to baptize,” and he “didn’t feel led to preach that funeral sermon,” and when there was anything apparently difficult to do he “didn’t feel led.” No doubt if he had been where the Lord could lead him, he would have had something to do. Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Gal. 6:2. Now instead of asking some one else to do the most difficult work for us let us each one do our share and every child of God will have something to do. Let us be sure God is not leading us to pray before we refuse to do it.

If we are workers for God as we should be, after we have bowed for prayers, we should not wait two or three minutes thinking it was more appropriate for this or that one, but each one fill our own and not another’s place in the body. Let us never think we have done too much for God. We can never do enough. The devil is at work in this line as well as others. It is very easy if we get on that line to wait on some one else, but in the day of judgment we will be weighed in the balances and found wanting. Dan. 5:27. This reformation must move on as never before, and we must move up to the line or be left in the rear. Trusting this may be for the good of some soul, I leave it in God’s hands. Amen. Your brother in Christ,

A. T. Rowe.

Dear Saints of God: I truly can say God has saved my soul and sanctified my nature. I have taken the Lord for my all in all. When my children get sick I take them to the Lord. Some time ago two of my children were very sick and I promised God if he would heal them I would testify to it, so God did heal them and I give him all the glory. Your sister in the one body,

Dear Saints of God: I do praise God for this wonderful salvation that saves to the uttermost all those who believe on him. I can truly say that he has sweetly saved my soul, and sanctified my nature by a second definite work of grace, and keeps me each day unspotted from this world and sin. Praise God and the Lamb forever! My feet are firm on the rock Christ Jesus, and my face set like flint toward Zion. I mean to run the race with patience and never get weary in well doing. The Lord has also healed me several times when I have been sick. To him be all the glory! May the Lord bless all the dear saints of God. Your sister fully saved,

Dear Trumpet Readers: I believe it would be to the glory of God to testify of God’s goodness to me. I have been so wonderfully healed through prayer of a disease of sixteen years standing. I tell you dear ones in Christ, it has strengthened my faith. The devil is not going to defeat me of my healing this time. When he comes and tries to make me believe I am not healed I just rebuke him in the name of Jesus. Now dear ones, I want you all to pray for me. I am saved just now from all sin and kept by the power of God. I can not praise God enough for saving my soul from sin, and also from sectism. I am now in the one body. Pray for the little church in this place, that we may be all of one mind and may be kept true to God. From your sister saved,

Dear Trumpet Readers: It has been some time since I last wrote my testimony to the GOSPEL TRUMPET, and will say I am yet saved amid all persecution and affliction. Praise the Lord! He has healed’ us and we can truly say, the Lord is our physician for both soul and body. I have been reading dear Bro. Schell’s sermon on importunity, and oh the comfort it gives to my soul! May God bless the workers and the dear saints, is my prayer. May the Lord send whom he will in the near future here to preach the pure gospel to these people again. Oh brethren if you could see the awful condition of the people here, surely you would come to the rescue. Pray for me that I may live salvation to the people here, and be used of the Lord much in leading souls to Christ. Your saved and sanctified brother,

Dear Beloved Ones: I wish to give my testimony to the praise of God and our Redeemer Jesus Christ, who has done so much for me. He has healed me soul and body. On the eighteenth of Aug. I went to meet a dear sister in the Lord at the Open Door Mission in Chicago. I have many years tried to serve my dear Lord and Savior as best I knew how, but of the healing of the body and the fullness of the Holy Ghost I had not been taught during that time. As my dear friend was healed and I had read in the Trumpet about many others that had been healed, and such miracles had been done by our dear heavenly Father, oh I longed to also receive such a blessing; but did not receive it until I was in the mission and had some of the elders lay hands on me. Oh the sweet comfort and peace I since have enjoyed! Tongue can not express. I would not give it for the whole world. For oh it is so sweet to have faith and to fully trust in Jesus Christ our Redeemer! Oh I praise God for his loving kindness and mercy shown unto me. Pray for me that I may be kept humble at Jesus’ feet. Your sister in Christ,

Dear Saints of God: To-day finds me trusting in the blood of Jesus that cleanses from all sin, I would say in regard to the article which Bro. J. Cole wrote, it just suits my case. I have been praying that God would open the way for me that I might find a way in which I might find help that I may know more of God’s will, that I may. sink down deeper in his perfect love and humility. I do humbly ask all of you to pray for me that I may have more wisdom and understanding of God’s will. Oh that I may be a burning and shining light in my family and to those around me! I have five little children. They love to hear me read the TRUMPET to them, also the SHINNING LIGHT. Oh pray earnestly that my children and husband may be saved into the one body of God. My little girl was sick about two weeks ago but I went to the Lord in prayer for her and he did strengthen her. Glory to his name! I felt it was for our good and God’s glory that she was afflicted. She did not seem to be in pain. She seemed weak and could not keep any thing on her stomach, but now she can eat and is feeling better, for which I give God all the glory. I am alone in this country so far as I know. I would love to hear from some of God’s little ones, as it would be such strength and good to my soul. Your sister all for Jesus,

Dear Saints of God: I feel it my duty and privilege to write my testimony for the first time. I can truly say that I am saved and sanctified and kept by the power of God through faith. About two years ago the true gospel was preached here at Mt. Pleasant, by Bro’s Schell and Warren. We were astonished to hear how fearless they preached the true word of God in spite of all opposition; and there we learned to our surprise, that to be a true child of God we must come out of sectism, live a holy and righteous life without sin, give up secret societies, quit using tobacco and strong drink, and take no part in the pleasures of this world. But that appeared to be impossible for us, and what a dreary life we thought it would be. So we searched the scriptures and in our ignorance and blindness we found passages we thought contradicted the idea of living without sin. But dear saints of God, or my Luthern brethren, or who ever may read this, if we had first gone to the feet of Jesus for pardon, for wisdom, for an understanding heart, and the love of God in our hearts, we would have been able to see that the word of God teaches holiness from begining to end. But nevertheless the preaching made quite a stir among the Luthern and Methodist in regard to their duty to God. But after the meeting was over we soon forgot the lesson we learned and thought it impossible to live a perfect and holy life without sin. But last winter the Lord sent Bro’s Stow and Taylor to hold a meeting at Mt. Pleasant, which I attended and was at last convicted that I must give up all for the sake of Christ, which I did. And thank God, he spoke peace to my soul and made me a new creature in Christ. Praise his holy name! My desire is now to live for Jesus and serve him only. I gave up the use of tobacco, which was no cross to speak of, for the Lord in answer to prayer took the appetite away in a short time. And the expected dreary life of a Christian I found a life of joy and happiness. Praise his holy name! We have learned to take Christ for our physician in body and soul. I was a short time ago, in answer to prayer, cured of a lame back, and also my children were cured immediately in answer to prayer, for which we give God all the praise. We would like to have Bro. Schell come this winter and hold a meeting. From your saved brother,

Chas. C. Weingard.

QUESTION.

_____

What is the proper mode of anointing the sick? A man claiming to be a minister insists upon anointing the diseased part.

F. W. S.

We read in James 5:14 that the sick are to be anointed by the elders of the church. There are no special instructions given concerning the mode of anointing the sick, but during Bible times we find that at various places people were anointed and the ointment or oil was poured upon the head, and that is all that is really necessary with the sick, no difference what part of the body may be diseased. If there be a disease of the face or hands, eyes, or ears it would be proper to anoint, but other parts of the body is not necessary to anoint, as the oil is not put on for its curative power, but because the word of God says put it on. Naaman was commanded to dip himself in the river of Jordan and he would be healed; not because those waters had a curative power, but because it was the direction of the Lord. In anointing the sick it is not the oil that cures, but through the prayer of faith the Lord does the raising up.

Editor of the Gospel Trumpet: In last week’s issue of the Trumpet a lady writes a testimony from Iowa in which she says the sore leg of a cow was healed in answer to her prayer. Do you, or does the Bible teach such a doctrine as that? If not, why do you publish such a testimony? If such a piece was read in public before an audience and told that the saints preached such a doctrine, is it any wonder that school houses and churches are closed against them? Please reply in Trumpet.

Yours respectfully,

L. M. H.

Ans. In reply to the above we would say that the power of God is unlimited, and will be manifest according to our faith. We will refer to a few promises from which the conclusion can be readily drawn, and no doubt the question plainly answered by the word of God.

“If ye abide in me and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” — Jno. 15:7. “Whatsoever we ask we receive of him because we keep his commandments and do those things which are pleasing in his sight.” — 1 Jno. 3:22. “And all things whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.” — Matt. 21:22. “Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.” — Mark 11:24. “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask anything according to his will he heareth us, and if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.” — 1 Jno. 5:14, 15. ’’For verily I say unto you that whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea, and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass, he shall have whatsoever he saith.” — Mark 11:23. “If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove, and nothing shall be impossible unto you.” — Matt. 17:20.

We would conclude from the above scriptures that mountains, cows, or anything else is included. He says, According to your faith be it unto you.” — Matt. 9:29. It would be a good thing for every one to trust their stock with the Lord as well as other things. Now, such things come in answer to prayer. The Bible does not tell us that our stock and such things are to be anointed and hands laid on, but for God’s people it says, “Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins they shall be forgiven him.” — James 5:14, 15. There are enough promises in these passages of scripture given to keep a person well supplied with blessings and favors of God if put into practice.

A TERRIBLE SIN.

_____

It seems there must be something said or written concerning the subject of getting rid of children, or keeping from having such large families. It is a very delicate subject to handle, nevertheless is one of the great evils of to-day, and is still increasing, There are hundreds, yes, thousands who are murderers in the sight of God, who have taken this step. Some to hide their shame, others to rid themselves of care, some with the knowledge of the awful crime, others not realizing the sin they have committed. Never with God’s help could I think of doing such an evil again. Some may think this an awful confession. Indeed it is. But God will even forgive a murderer if they come and meet the conditions of his word.

People would be amazed if they could look into the guilty faces and realize the great number of people guilty of this crime. Should these lines meet the eye of some guilty one, or some one who has aided in such a crime, may the Lord help you to confess your guilt to Him, and plunge into the fountain which is open for sin and uncleanness, that you may be able to meet the Lord in peace when he comes. Yours, trusting in Jesus,

Sarah M. Cleveland.

In view of the fact that ten tribes of Israel revolted, and divided Israel, refusing to be governed by the word of God, it is manifest that men have desired to set themselves in the place of God, instituting ways and means to save souls. (God says, Let him that readeth understand.)

Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David. If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the Lord at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their Lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah.” — 1 Kings 12:26, etc.

Now in view of these things, Jeroboam took counsel and made two calves; the one he put up in Dan, and the other in Bethel, and said to the people, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem; behold thy gods O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. Now this thing became sin to the people, for they worshiped the golden calves which Jeroboam made; and he made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi. This work was manifest to Paul when he speaks of him “who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshiped; so that he as God, sitting in the temple of God, showing that he is God.” 2 Thess. 2:4. “And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie. That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but have pleasure in unrighteousness.” — 2 Thess. 2:11, 12. Mystery of iniquity.

The ten tribes are now before us. Golden calves are made, who claim authority to commission men to be priests. The golden calves are transformed (retitled), called churches, associations, conference. In these the lowest of the people are made priests; whomsoever will, of them they make priests, who like Jeroboam tell the people these be the gods which brought us out of Egypt. Some say the Baptist church is my mother; the Methodist church is my mother. They tell the people it is too far up to Jerusalem, too much labor, no need to live holy, to live righteous would be going up to Jerusalem. The Jeroboams, the tinker-smiths, would lose their (trade) craft. An elder said to me, “I would not mind to hear men talking of holiness, but as soon as they begin to talk about holiness they want to leave the church.” Jeroboam cared not for their going to Jerusalem, but the going to Jerusalem signified the destruction of their (churches) calves, and a denunciation of the authority of the (elders and bishops) priests which Jeroboam had ordained, also the dethroning and death of the king. If the people were living holy God would be recognized as head of of the church. Elders and bishops only as God set them in the church would be recognized as such. The people in our day are building (churches) altars on every high hill, where their worship or sacrifice can be seen of men. Jesus said, All your works ye do for to be seen of men, and when men look on their sacrifice, verily they shall have their reward; they establish altars under every green tree, shady, easy, where money can be had for that purpose. Bounty of money makes the tree green and flourishing. The shade from the leaves of this money tree shelters from the scorching rays of poverty.

The people build them altars, then dedicate them to God. What God? Methodists dedicate to the Methodist god. Baptists dedicate to the Baptist God. If they were dedicating to me God of eternal life, Baptists could dedicate their brother Methodist house; Presbyterians could dedicate to Catholic; but not so; such mistakes have not been witnessed. The Baptists have not sworn allegience to the Methodist god, neither have the Presbyterians sworn allegience to the Catholic god, therefore they cannot trust them whom they call brother. They deny being a unit; they virtually deny relationship of any kind. When the law says they shall have the same care one for another, they of another name are not recognized; they fail to know each other’s language; God has confounded their language, and they are now called Babylon, a beast full of names of blasphemy, a beast like a leopard; whoso readeth let him understand. 666 in number, and neither two of them alike. Truly she is like a leopard. No leopard has been seen by the natural eye to excel her in colors. By her sorceries all nations have been deceived; Paul says they shall wax worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. I am an eye witness of these things; for twenty-five years I was deceived by her sorceries, and when I began to see, or come to years, and refused to obey her traditions, she opened her mouth to swallow me up, but God had mercy and delivered me.

This woman, Babylon, Mother of harlots, and her daughters, claim to be the true Mother, the Bride, the Lamb’s wife; even she who has deceived all nations, has become the habitation of devils, hold of foul spirits, and cage of every hateful and unclean bird. How can I refrain from speaking? God says, As she has rewarded you, give to her double Her priests’ divine for money, and her prophets preach for hire. They are polluting God among his people

Page 3

for hands full of barley, and for a piece of bread, to slay the souls that should not die, and save alive the souls that should not live, and yet they lean upon the Lord and say, Is the Lord not with us? No evil shall come upon us. Like slaves I have seen stood on a block one after another and sold to the man who offered for them the most money. Their ministers are set on the conference block, and the delegate who offers the most money gets with his money the one whom he desires, each one is put in the money scale, each one can figure closely at his value in dollars and cents. When the Holy Ghost fails to send them where there is money for their hire, they take an appeal and always get currency.

Will any read this who are yet deceived by the fair speeches of this beast? Will any be heard to say, What must I do? The voice of the Lord says, Come out of her my people, that ye partake not of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. Rev. 18:4. Are there any plagues to be added to them who worship the beast? Read Rev. 18th chapter. And whoso readeth let him understand.

Celina, O.

Dear Saints: We came to this place two weeks ago and commenced meeting in the name of Jesus, and closed the 24th with victory. A few souls got out of sectism and found Jesus precious to their souls. There were two consecrations for justification and five for sanctification. Several cases of divine healing. At the close of the meeting we had a glorious ordinance service. About thirteen participated. From your brother in the one body,

David Smith.

Dear Saints of God: We are holding forth the word of life in different places here, and the truth is taking deep root in the hearts of the people. Where the pure word has gone forth sect preachers have commenced to preach many of the same truths, but still hold to their ways of division, thus blinding the people. The devil in this way sends forth his ministers as transformed angels of light, going forth to preach some truth in order to deceive, and still keep the people in sectism. Your brother in Christ.

Montpelier, O., Nov. 26.

Dear Brethren and Trumpet Readers: We are rejoicing in God our Savior who has saved and is keeping us from all sin. Praise his holy name! Meeting closed at Cooney, O., Sabbath evening. This was a new place and a few we believe found the Savior. Some were willing to acknowledge the truth but did not obey it. We lived in our own hired house most of the time during this meeting, and received all who came to us. The Lord supplied all our needs for house-keeping, partly by the friends in that vicinity, but especially by the church near Pioneer, O. These dear brethren abound in the grace of liberality. 2 Cor. 8:7. May God supply all their need and enable them to always triumph in Christ Jesus. We came here yesterday. Will begin meeting to-night, Lord willing, four and a half miles north-east of Montpelier. Brethren, pray for us. Yours in Christ,

B. F. Roe, C. H. and Mary Tubbs.

Dear Brethren: We are glad to report that the New Paris, Ohio, meeting was a success, for God was with us from beginning until the close. We held about eleven days and the most of the time we held both day and night. There were a few who were willing to yield unto God, and a few were obedient to the voice, Come out of her my people. Rev. 18:4. At this place we found many warm hearts who were for the whole truth. May God bless them for their kindness shown unto us while in their midst. On our way to this place we stopped off at Anderson, Ind. and had a most precious little visit with the saints in that town. We are holding meeting now in the saints’ meeting house, in the little town of Jalapa, Ind. We are looking for a good meeting at this place. At the close of this meeting I will return home and provide for my family such things as they need for the winter, then commence meeting near Bro. Leininger’s. Brethren, pray for us, that God will keep us humble. We remain as ever your brethren all sold out to Jesus.

Dear Saints: Since our last report we held meeting one week at Fern, whicn was precious to our souls. The saints at this place very much desire an assembly meeting this winter. We held meeting at Bro. and Sister Barnetts, at Knox, over Sunday. We found them rejoicing in full salvation. Then came to Kaneville, nine miles from Oil City. This place is taken up with the spiritualist doctrine but we found a few honest souls who seemed willing to accept the truth.

At Petroleum Center about one and a half miles distant, a large hall had been secured, and we found many hungry souls, hungering for the pure gospel. This is a new place for the full gospel and this part of the country seems just ripe for the harvest. During our stay of about two weeks there were ten consecrated for pardon and five for sanctification. This place is about half. Catholic and when their idolatry was exposed, there was threatening, and even plotting to mob us. The terms of peace they proposed were that we “must not preach so straight,” which we refused to agree to and the house was closed. We continued meeting one night in a private house, during which there were six consecrations, but circumstances compelled us to close until opportunity affords us another opening in that place. Our permanent address will be Georgeville, Pa. Yours in the one body.

Dear Brethren in Christ: God abundantly bless and keep you for his name’s sake. Amen. After the Payne C. M. closed Bro. Ellison and I went to Latty, O. and held a few meetings, the result of which was two souls were reclaimed from a backslidden state. From Latty we went to Waynesfield, O. where the Lord gave us a good meeting. Some of the dear ones got a deeper experience in the things of God; others were reclaimed from a backslidden state, and the church was advanced in the truth and were glad in the Lord. Praise God! It was a season for showers of blessings. Ezek. 34:26. From Waynesfield we went to Hinkle chapel two miles north of Round- head, Hardin Co., O. There were a few consecrations at this meeting, among those who came from Waynesfield. God bless them for Jesus’ sake and keep them from the evils of the world. From the above place we went to Rising Sun and on our way we stopped and had services one night with the dear brethren in Marion Co., O. and the good Lord blessed our souls in delivering the truth to the little assembly. We commenced a meeting in Bro. J. Roush’s neighborhood, a few miles from Rising Sun, and held a meeting which was blessed of God, and those who were in a snare of the devil were extricated out of it and obtained joy and gladness from the Lord. We pray God that they may be more watchful and prayerful in the future. We are now engaged in a meeting near Sunol, Pa. Pray for us. Your saved brethren in the one body.

Grand Junction, Mich., Nov. 30.

Dear Trumpet Readers: In the name of the Lord we will give a report of some meetings in the northern part of Michigan. Sept. 21 began meeting at Bro. Koffman’s near Blair, Mich. Had a glorious meeting. Five were baptized. Oct. 2, went to East Jordan, preached one night, and on the third went to Dwight and stopped over Lord’s day, had a good meeting. Bro’s G. Giles and Vernon Tillitson accompanied me to the Johnson school house, three miles south of Charlevoix. We held thirteen days with victory on the Lord’s side. There is a little church planted there of about twenty members. On Sabbath the 20th I baptized nine, and in the evening at Bro. B. Sheldon’s house we had an ordinance meeting which was very precious to us all. Praise God for the glorious ingathering of souls at that place! May they all be faithful to God.

Oct. 23, met with the church at East Bliss and spent a few days with them, and it was a refreshing time to us all. Praise his name!

Oct. 30 went to Hessel, beyond the straits of Mackinaw. Met with the brethren at the house of Bro. Robinson, which was a joyful meeting to us all. God bless those dear brethren so far away in the forests. God did wonderfully use us in presenting the Word, and in exposing false teachers and doctrines, and restoring the church of God in that place from the effects of the same. In that place is one George Nichols, and a like spirit by the name of Smith, who are fanattics and bigots of the worst kind. Departing from the word of God, they are led off with abominable dreams and visions — see Jude 8. Teaching that the evening light has not yet come, accepting their own light which is darkness. They say they have no use for the Grand Junction saints, prating with malicious words against us. To make appear that they are more righteous than others, they maintain that it is wrong to get song books, etc., copyrighted, wrong for God’s people to use the law for the protection of order in meetings, and wrong for ministers to accept railroad permits, and travel on half fare. Another doctrine of devils Mr. Nichols advocates is that men and women must live in celibacy as the priests of Rome profess to live; otherwise a person, says he, is not wholly sanctified. The language he has used in public has brought reproach upon the cause of Christ in more than one place. This man by his pernicious doctrines, picking spirit, and railing upon the saints of God, has brought confusion and desolation as the fruits of his doing. Recently we understand, he has visited the little church in Allegan, Mich., and took occasion to abuse the people of God. We warn God’s children everywhere against him and his antichrist spirit. Your saved and sanctified brother in Christ, contending for the truth once delivered to the saints,

Byron Wooden.

FLOATING BETHEL.

Tiltonville, O. Nov. 25.

Dear Saints: The fire of truth is still burning along the Ohio river; there were thirteen came to the altar at Warrenton and most of them got a bright experience, six happy saints followed their blessed Lord in baptism. And they have commenced meetings at both there and at Rush Run since we left. Bro. Riggle and Co. have been with us some; they are visiting the churches between here and Pittsburg, Pa. We have held meetings in seventeen towns and cities since we left Pittsburg, besides many other places back from the river. The prospect for this winter is good; the tabernacle (a large meeting house) is still open for the work in Wheeling, W. Va., also sister Allen offers two large rooms for mission work all in the center of the city. As we have been longer at the last two places than we expected, we have decided to winter at Martin’s Ferry a town of about 12,000 population opposite Wheeling. We are now in the neighborhood where about three months was spent sowing the precious seed four years ago. Then I preached in twenty-two places most of which are now ripe for the harvest. Also I received a card a few days ago from Bro. A. Tombleson at Moundsville, W. Va. that he has reserved a beautiful grove adjoining the Moundsville camp ground a great summer resort) for a camp ground for the saints of the living God. It is only one-fourth of a mile from B. and O. R. R. station and the same from street car line which connects the cities and towns for twelve miles up the river. There are also two other railroads and the Ohio river which makes it a very central point for a general camp meeting. I think about the first of Aug. will be the most suitable time. Let the saints in Ohio, southern Pennsylvania and West Virginia, arrange to attend this meeting. Those sending provisions to the Bethel please ship to Martin’s Ferry Ohio, which is to be our address until spring.

THE WORK IN THE SOUTH.

_____

My soul has been wonderfully stirred for the work in these new fields, and I am devoting all my time to the same, but the calls are fast coming in from every direction, “come over and help us.” And it is impossible to meet most of them. I am praying earnestly to God constantly, to send more consecrated workes into his vineyard, especially where the work is so great and the workers so very very few. I cannot dictate for any one, but oh, let each one enquire of the Lord if he will not have more workers in the southern field. Surely God is laying the burden on some workers for this field, which is ripe to harvest.

The commission is go into all the world and preach the gospel to eyery creature, and these fields are on the circuit. Wife and I and Bro. Duncan have spent most of the summer in this state (Tennessee), but we know of no one else in the state who devotes all their time to the work. There is a church of God’s little ones planted at about four different places in this state and the work around each one is great. Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi are almost without workers. Oh, my brethren, if God has not called you out into his work can not you untie the hands of some one else whom God has called, and it is so hard for them to get away from home? Some whom God could use seem almost bound at home. Oh ye saints of God that live near such ones are not you responsible for souls if you do not untie such ones and let them go? Remember we will meet souls in the day of judgment that have earnestly called for help. Are we doing all we possibly can to help them down into the fountain or send help to them? Oh let every one ask themselves, Could I say, that I have done all I possibly could for the rescue of souls? The adversary has already begun to flood the South with his false doctrine. Would to God his word could go before this stuff and be planted in the hearts of the honest hungry ones. But they are tired of sectism and long for something better, and the devil to keep them out of the real truth has helped the people and preachers to get up a holiness association (so called) getting the people to discard sect divisions in a measure and join the association, then it is harder to reach them with the truth. Oh how well the devil knows that Babylon will need patching some way to deceive the people any longer.

We have recently had the privilege of visiting the church located in different parts of the state. Found the dear ones near St. Clair, Hawkins Co., in a very confused condition because of some crooked doctrine getting among them, but the Lord cleared everything up as far as we know. Praise his dear name! The work in McMinn Co., is also in need of workers. Eleven consecrated ones were baptized near Athens at the close of a meeting held there by Bro. Duncan in October. God bless the young lambs of the fold.

Who can go to that field of work? Who is God calling to them seemingly neglected South, where there are wide fields white to harvest with so few reapers? We will, Lord willing, labor for some time in middle Tennessee. Our address will be Fayetteville, Tenn. Pray for us and the work here. Yours for the truth,

Ostis B. Wilson and Co-workers.

Dear Saints of God: I believe it is the will of God that I write my testimony. I was saved when I was sixteen years old and joined the M. E. sect. About a year ago I heard the true gospel preached by Sister Fink. I was saved sometime after that, but not sanctified. I have had fits ever since I was three years old. The Lord healed me of them; praise his name! I give him all the glory. Pray for me that I may be sanctified. Your brother in Christ,

DIVINE HEALING.

__________

The Time Of Healing.

_____

By E. E. Byrum.

THE time of healing is now; as the Word says, “Now is the day of salvation, now is the accepted time,” and salvation and healing go together. Where Christ is to be found healing is to be found also. It has not always been manifest by those who have found Christ because they have not believed his word on that line sufficiently to put it in practice. The gifts of healing have never been withdrawn from the church, but people have so far departed from the faith once delivered to the saints that they were unable to exercise those gifts, and the faith of the people was not up to the Bible standard because the doctrine of healing was not taught. But thanks be unto God the time is now here when his Word is going forth in its purity, and his people are contending for the faith once delivered unto the saints, and for the faith for the healing of the body as well as tor other portions of the Word. It also comes down to an individual matter the same as for the salvation of the soul, and when our faith reaches the proper point then the healing takes place.

The woman who pressed her way through the crowd and merely touched the hem of his garment was instantly healed; not so much because of the touch, but because she believed that if she did only touch his garment she would be made whole. And Jesus turned about and told her that her faith had made her whole. We now can touch the hem of his garment by faith by taking his wore and believing it true in our case.

Dear suffering ones, there is health for you. The time of healing is now, or at any time when you come to the point where you will take the word of God and believe it. Hundreds and thousands of people are being healed now by the power of God. Will you not let him heal you also?

__________

Instantaneous Healing from Fever.

_____

“That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.” Phile. 6. It is for this that I now for the first time write my testimony for publication. About three years ago God cleansed my heart and gave me his Holy Spirit as an abiding Comforter. I then promised him to walk in all the light he would give me. In a short time I heard preached that God is the healer of his people and my heart said, Amen, though my faith was small; but he says, “to him that hath shall be given,” and praise his name, he gave me faith to trust him in many trials, one of which I will now relate. About a year ago our little girl three years old was taken sick while at supper with a severe chill. She shook so I could not hold her still, and, as I had promised to sit up with a sick neighbor that night, I put the little one to bed and asked the Lord to heal her and let me go. She went to sleep immediately and I went leaving her in the care of the members of the family. When I returned home I found she had been restless during the night and Satan fastened a fever on her which seemed to increase from hour to hour, for thirty-two hours, during which time she ate nothing and noticed but little. I then saw that God would have me send for the elders and have her anointed in the name of the Lord, which I did. Bro’s Byers and Chisholm responding to the call. When the anointing service was over and the prayer of faith offered the fever was gone, and a gentle perspiration stood on her body. She was healed and her appetite restored. To God be all the glory. And now by way of conclusion let me add that God in his wisdom and love was willing to show me how severe the sickness had been, so he let her gain her strength in the natural way, and although laughing and happy, yet she could not walk alone for one week, so severe had been the sickness of thirty-two hours.

The Two-edged Sword.

_____

(Continued from last issue.)

The world is bound under the iron rule of fashion worship. Whatever fashion dictates should be worn, the world bows in obedience to, regardless of modest common sense or the laws of health. If we should establish a certain style of dress to be worn by the church of God, it would soon become a dead formal fashion worship, just what the world is doing. The Dunkers aimed at plainness but struck on the rock of fashion worship, with their white caps and peculiar bonnets for their women and their long hair and shaven upper lip for their men. The Quakers struck on the same rock with their gray cloth for their women and their broad- brimmed hats for their men.

Beloved, if you can not handle a brother or sister with the Word for superfluity or immodesty in dress, you had best keep still. We visited a place where some were fearful lest the saints should fall Into fashion worship. So they would object if two sisters got a dress each from the same piece of goods. This is also vanity. They carried this to such a pitch that if a sister had worn her hair on the top of her head before she was saved, she must continue to do so; while one who had worn her hair on the back of her head must still wear it so. Likewise if a brother had worn full beard when a sinner he must still wear full beard; while one who had seen used to shaving clean must still shave so. Oh for consistency which becomes godliness! Brethren, fanaticism is of the devil, for the purpose of destroying the unity of the saints.

On the other hand we have met some who try to excuse themselves for using tobacco, tea, coffee, etc. by saying that Christ says that which goes into the mouth does not defile. Thus they stretch the words of Christ in Mark 7:15 and make it cover any thing in creation which a man might take down his throat. This is a dishonest twisting of the Word which no honest soul who has ever heard the truth on these things will attempt.

Let us examine this seventh chapter and see the Savior’s meaning. In verses 1-5 we find the Jews accusing him of being defiled because he did not wash his hands before he ate his meal. This is clear. The defiling consisted only in taking in some filth with the food from the unwashed hands. There is positively nothing else referred to. So when Christ said “that which goes into a man does not defile,” he had no reference to any thing except what might be thus unconsciously taken with the food. To make this more clear, we read in 1 Cor. 5:11, that if a man is a drunkard the church must not associate with him. In chapt. 6:10 we find that a drunkard has no inheritance in the kingdom of God. If it were possible that a man was right in every respect except that he was a drunkard, he would be so defiled as to separate him from the church on earth and in heaven. And it all came about by something which going down his throat defiled him. To stretch a scripture and make it cover more ground than the Spirit gave it for is to destroy our own souls. 2 Pet. 3:16. Such a course will blind us in the fogs of delusion and put us where the Spirit can not teach us the plain meaning of the Word. Paul says, “all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.” 1 Cor. 10:23. A few years ago the devil started a young man who claimed to be teaching the pure word of God, to stretching this text of scripture and make it take in every thing one could imagine, without any reference to what the apostle was speaking of or how far the Spirit intended it to reach. He went around teaching that he could get drunk, commit fornication, or any thing he chose, and it would be lawful for him, but might not edify the church. Of course he did not long have opportunity to trouble the real saints of God with his delusions.

Now dear brethren in the ministry, I want to speak earnestly to you. While talking a short time ago to one who claimed to be called to teach the pure Word, we insisted that we as teachers had positively no right to teach or practice any thing which we could not clearly sustain by the precepts or example of Christ or the apostles. He said that if we should lay aside every thing that could not be proven clearly by the Word, we would run into rankest fanaticism. In the name of Jesus we say that if we are not to adhere strictly the whole Word and reject all else which may be offered as doctrine or discipline, we can never fulfill the Word in “seeing eye to eye” and being “perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.” If we allow anything bound on the church simply because some earnest soul has strong convictions that way, it will be utterly impossible to attain or keep perfect unity. The conflicting superstitions of heathendom and contradictory doctrines of sectism prove fully that human judgment and conviction however sincere is an utter failure as a standard to bring unity. Beloved, if we whom God has called out of the fogs of sectism should teach or practice those things which we have not the clear word of God for, we cease to be what we claim to be and fall to a plane which in this respect is not one whit above sectism itself.

I have before me a discipline of the U. B. sect. On page 14 we read, “We believe that the holy Scriptures old and new testaments, are the word of God; that it reveals the only true way to our salvation; that every true Christian is bound to acknowledge and receive it by the help and the Spirit of God as the only rule and guide in faith and practice.” After making a positive statement that every true Christian is bound to receive it as the ONLY rule in faith and practice, or in other words as the only guide in doctrine and discipline, they proceed to lay down 144 pages of doctrines, discipline and rules by which to rule their sect. Now if we teach that the Word is the only authority we need from which to draw doctrine and discipline, and then proceed to teach or practice something which the Word does not teach, we commit the same sin which God has commanded us to reprove Babylon for. Just a little breach in what the workers do or teach may be taken up and widened by some weaker saint till it becomes an awful heresy. When once we cut loose from the plain positive Word, there is absolutely no standard by which to gauge our doings and notions.

Beloved, suppose that when you are practicing anything for which you have no Word, some sectarian should ask you for your authority for so doing, you could only say, “Of course I cannot find any scripture for it, but I feel that the Lord leads me to do this, and that he blesses it to his glory.” The sectarian with fully as good a reason could say, “Neither can we find scripture for our organization and discipline, but we believe the Lord led our founders to do their work, and we believe he uses it to his glory.” I speak plainly, for my heart has been made to ache because such things have been practiced in the field, and the result in every case is to weaken and discourage the saints. Brethren, if we have reached the unity where we can “see eye to eye” and teach the same, let our lives show it, and if we have not reached that plane, it were better not to profess before the world that we have.

We recently met some who had been teaching on the question of marriage and divorce, that no matter how long a man had been entangled in a second marriage, nor how ignorant he had been at the time of marrying the second living wife, when he heard the light on this subject, that he could not get or retain salvation unless he should separate from the last wife. Then when a brother came along who would not dare teach a thing which he could not clearly sustain by the Word, some one would ask him what he thought of persons living in that state, and because this last brother would not positively say that such must separate, the cry of division among workers is raised, and some weak saints probably stumble over it. Brethren, in so doing we cause division and expose our souls to one edge of the sword. Paul says, “Take heed to thyself and to the doctrine, for in so doing thou shalt both save thyself and them that hear thee.” It is far better to be a little slow to teach a thing, than teach it wrong and have to renounce it.

I have met circumstances where my convictions were against what others did, but if I could not sustain my convictions by the Word, I have had to keep still and wait on the Lord for light. But says one, the Holy Spirit will guide into the truth which is not taught in the Word. Notice, that the Spirit was to guide into the truth. Jno. 16:13. Christ says the Word is truth. Jno. 17:17. So the Spirit Is to guide into the Word, and not independent of it. It is true that the apostles had a special place in the body, and they were so empowered by the Spirit that they had the keys of the kingdom, and power to bind and loose in the sense of giving the doctrines which were to be binding on the church to the end of time. Mat. 16:19. But notice that Christ did not pray for those who should believe on him through some doctrines revealed in these last days by the Spirit, but for those who should believe on him through the word of the apostles. Jno. 17:20. Peter says, “That ye may fie mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Savior.” 2 Pet. 3:2. Paul says,“ And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone.” Eph. 2:20. The whole tenor of the scriptures is that with the writings of the apostles, the giving of doctrines and laws for the church of God ended The Holy Spirit truly is given to guide the church into all truth (Word), and to give wisdom to act in the various circumstances in which we are placed. But he was given to clearly teach the church the meaning of the Word already given, and not to give new doctrines or laws which the apostles failed to learn and record.

May the Lord keep his people humble and watchful, and standing free from both edges of the sword.

Yours in the defence of the gospel of Christ.

R. M. Haynes.

TESTIMONY.

_____

Port Sunlight, Rock Ferry, Eng.

Dear Saints of God: I am glad this morning finds me sweetly saved. I am glad God sent his ministers to preach the true light. I was wrapt up in sectism; some of the brethren would tell me of the evening light out I fought hard against it. They invited me to one of their meetings, and glory to God he showed me how much I was short. I measured up and I presented my body a living sacrifice unto God; it was then the power and glory filled my soul. The Lord has wonderfully healed me of lung disease. And also my little boy lad a lump come on his wrist on the sinews; after trying the doctors who said they dared do nothing with it, I took him to Bro. Rupert for anointing and prayer, and glory to God he is healed, and the lump gone, Psa. 103:3. Who forgiveth all thine iniquities and healeth all thy diseases. I praise God for the work at Rock Ferry. Truly the Lord has done wonderful things among us, and for us, whereof we are glad. My brethren and I are praying the Lord to send more gleaners throughout England. Pray for us that we may be found perfect, entire, nothing wanting. Yours in Jesus,

John Melbourne.
