Oh! Why Not To Night?

_____

Oh, do not let the word depart,
And close thine eyes against the light,
Poor sinner, harden not your heart,
Be saved, oh, to night.

CHORUS.
Oh, why not to night?
Oh, why not to night?
Wilt thou be saved?
Thou why not to night?

This world has nothing now to give,
It has no new, no pure delight,
Oh, try the life that Christians live,
Be saved, oh, to night.

Our Lord in pity lingers still,
And will thou thus his love requite,
Renounce at once thy stubborn will,
Be saved, oh to night.

Our blessed Lord refuses none,
Who would to him their souls unite,
Believe in him, the work is done,
Be saved, oh, to night.

To morrow’s sun may never rise,
To bless thy long deluded sight,
This is the time, oh then be wise,
Be saved, oh, to night.

BENEFITS OF WISDOM.

_____

THE wise shall inherit glory. Prov. 3:35. Wisdom says: I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgement; that I may cause those that love me to inherit substance, and I will fill their treasures. For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favor of the Lord; but he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul. Prov. 8:20, 21, 35, 36. Rebuke a wise man and he will love thee. Give instruction to a wise man and he will be yet wiser. Chron. 9:8, 9. The lips of the wise disperse knowledge. Chron. 15:7. A fool uttereth all his mind; but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards. Chron. 29:11. And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament. The wise shall understand. Dan. 12:3 10.

There are four things which are little, upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise: the ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer; the conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks; the locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands; (margin, gathered together.) the spider taketh hold with her hands and is in Kings’ palaces. Prov. 30:24, 28. Were these little things not wise, they could not exist; Because of their littleness, the Creator has endued them with much wisdom. So it is when man is little, humble in his own eyes, a fool in his own sight, that he may become wise, then God imparts his wisdom and enables him to rise high above the wisdom of this world. The wisdom of these little things enables them to exist more independently than other creatures of greater strength. The ants prepare their meat in summer, and in winter when the horse or elephant would, if not otherwise provided for, starve to death; they, by their wisdom, have plenty. Wisdom lays up in store, for the future, treasures in heaven, our vessels filled with oil. When the Bridegroom comes we will be ready, having “laid up in store against the time to come.” The conies make their houses in the rocks. How much wiser is this little creature than great man with all his boasted wisdom and architecture. When his stately mansions are swept away by fire, flood and tempest, the little cony dwells in perfect safety. He who humbles himself at the cross, finds refuge in Christ. When the elements of sin assail him, he has perfect shelter. Happy is he who makes the clefted rock his habitation. Read Psa. 91. The locusts go forth together, being governed exclucively by the wisdom God has given them. This teaches us unity. They do not choose a fellow locust to rule over them, and make him a king. They know no distinction; there is not one above another, but are all one; one aim, one motive, one mind, faithfully fulfilling their created design. Foolish man was not satisfied to be governed, by his Creator, in this manner; but wanted an earthly king. After much persistence his request was granted and the consequence was, Israel became divided and weak, and finally a reproach among the nations. How true this is to day in the religious world. Men will not accept the divine nature, within their hearts, and submit themselves to the righteousness of God, and take his precious holy word for their guide, — would that they were as wise as the locusts — but they must choose a fellow-man for their head, instead of Christ. This has divided the professing world into schisms, until to day the disgusting spectacle of rival-heads, by the hundreds, presents itself to the gaze of this dying world. But thank God, the children of wisdom have no earthly king. By being partakers of the divine nature we accept Christ, our king and head, and have thrown off all allegiance to sect leaders. Halleluiah! Carnal professors say we have no head. Praise God, we have. Christ is the head of the church; and were men willing to submit to the righteousness of God, they could discern the body of Christ. The mind of Christ is not division, but unity. This one mind is our guide, and unifies all who receive it. Christ is all and in all. The spider taketh hold with her hands, firmly anchored to things above, and therefore dwells where she can even look down upon the king. The child of wisdom, also has taken hold of things above. The way of life is above, to the wise, that he may depart from hell beneath. Prov. 15:24. Lay hold on eternal life. 1 Tim. 6:12. Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul; both sure and steadfast and which entereth into that within the veil. Heb. 6:19.

CHARACTERISTICS OF WISDOM.

But the wisdom that is from above, is first pure, then peaceable, gentle and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. My brother do these heavenly qualities shine out through us to this perishing world? Let us seek continually for more and more of these precious gems, until our lives sparkle with their heavenly beauty. We see them plainly in all the life of our Savior while upon earth. Let us be able in all wisdom to magnify this glorious gospel among the sons of men, and stand invincible before the hosts of sin, our light so shining before men that they may see our good works and glorify our Father which is in heaven.

__________

THE MARTYRS OF THE HOLY GHOST.

_____

LET us notice some principles peculiarly connected with the martyrs of the Spirit of holiness. First, their persecutions are always received on account of their testimony to an inner and hidden work of the Holy Ghost. The word martyrs, is a Greek word and means a “witness,” and the word has been left untranslated, because God’s servants have ever been persecuted for being witnesses. If the apostles had gone through the earth simply philosophizing and speculating as to the historic Jesus, as many preachers do now, they would never have had any persecutions. But when they fairly and squarely and firmly testified, to what they had seen and heard of Christ, then and not till then, did they become the martyrs for Jesus.

Now, the very same principle transpires with reference to the Holy Spirit. No one has ever been known to be persecuted in Catholic or Protestant lands, for preaching cold historic facts of the Holy Ghost. Fencoln, Fox, Wesley, Whitfield, Bunyan and Bromwell, may talk ancient recorded facts of the Spirit, and theories and speculate all they please of the sanctifying office of the Spirit, and the devil would not deem it worth hissing after them. But when they turn witnesses and declare that the living, personal Holy Spirit is locked in the tomb of sacred lore: when they solemnly aver, that the lightning of Pentecost can and does flash across the intervening centuries, to their bosom, that he produces a new birth and subsequently effects an entire sanctification in the soul, which can be felt and known with infallible certainty: then the kingdom of hell is shaken and everything in alliance with Satan, rises to oppose this testimony.

We may preach in every form of statement the facts of redemption, that occurred thousands of years ago, and neither Catholic or Protestant, saint or sinner persecute our prophecy, for the reason that such preaching by itself, never saves any one, and is not worth a breath of opposition. The thousands of so-called religious effusions do not sufficiently disturb Satan to make him frown, when we affirm that the volume of historic Christianity is, by the Holy Ghost reproduced in soul and life to day, that the advent is repeated in spirit when we are born of God: that the dove on the head of Jesus, is repeated when we receive the Spirit of adoption, and inwardly hear God’s voice calling us children. That Gethsemane and the cross are repeated in God’s children when we undergo death of self and entire crucifixion to the world: that the burial of Christ is repeated in our souls, when we sink as it were into the silent grave of our own nothingness and in a manner, enter into the life of eternity; that the resurrection of Jesus is spiritually reproduced in us, when we emerge by an act of perfect sanctifying faith (Rom, 6:4, 5,) into victory over all sin and the world; that the day of Pentecost is truly and actually repeated in us when our purified hearts receive the instantaneous incoming of the personal fulness of the Holy Spirit to abide with us forever; when we thus declare that the Holy Ghost is transposing the history of redemption across the ages into the actual present.

When we go farther and testify that these things are verily taken place in our own experience, — it is then we bring forth the kingdom of God: it is then that we shake and enrage the kingdom of Satan, it is then we incur persecution. And this persecution solely against a declared inward experience of the Spirit.

For over a thousand years there has been no persecution against the historic facts of Jesus except a few infidel books; but it has all been directed against the Holy Ghost; sometimes against his work in regeneration; but especially against his work in entire sanctification. And every thing said or done against entire holiness as to its work, experience or testimony, proceeds from carnality, and is a thrust at the personal Holy Spirit.

Another principle is, that the martyrs of the Holy Ghost are seldom killed outright in bodily death. True, Romanism in the dark ages, killed thousands on account of the work of the Spirit; but multitudes not directly murdered, were imprisoned, banished, excommunicated, etc. And as the light of God fills the earth the modes of persecution grow milder. Those who now witness to, and press forward the work of holiness, though not actually killed it may be, yet, they are hated, ostracized, innuendoed and caricatured, from so called religious pulpits and news papers; shunned in company, denied offices of trust and honor. This is more so in some places than others; but when holiness is not opposed in some form or degree, it is because it is spurious, and not worth the old lion’s growl.

The persecution against the work of the Holy Spirit have come invariably from some professed church of Christ. Jews, infidels and Pagans do not lodge their attacks against personal experiences. They are more sensible in their madness and attack the foundation of scripture facts. That remains for church symptoms, and professed Christians who believe the Bible and the atonement and yet wage war on their fruit in holiness. Jews and infidels deny the root, stock and fruit of redemption; but millions of professed Christians are foolish enough to admit the root and stock of salvation and then deny its fruit in the power of experience.

The persecutions against God the Father were by idolaters, either Jewish or heathenish. The persecutions against Jesus were from Jews and false religionist. But the persecutions against the work of the Holy Ghost have always proceeded from the ranks, (so-called) visible church both Catholic and Protestant. It is always the outward form of Christianity pitted against the inward power of it. Ecclesiastical systems and ecclesiastical devotees, while holding the form, have in all ages been the antagonists of the indwelling power of the Holy Ghost. Those who have the Holy Ghost are in the visible church, and yet it is true that you cannot find a saint or advocate of holiness in the last fifteen hundred years that was not persecuted by those in the very church (sect) to which they belonged. * * * It often occurs that popular ministers and worldly laymen, who have cracked coarse jokes over sanctification and in many ways antagonized the testimony of holiness are unexpectedly called to a dying bed, and find themselves poorly fitted to launch into a holy heaven. Many of them find the sanctification which they opposed and joked over, is what they must have in death; while some of these unfaithful preachers and church (sect) officials will wake up in hell.

Perhaps most of the professed Christians who shun or oppose sanctification, are not aware that they persecute the Spirit; but the remains of depravity in their hearts develop an ill feeling against holiness. Yea, this may be done at the very time they are panting for a clean heart; for sometimes the carnal mind makes an ugly manifestation, like the devils of old, of itself as it is being cast out. Inasmuch, then, as all believers are infected with inbred sin until they are wholly purified and inasmuch as this inbred sin will show more or less resistance to the perfect will of God, therefore it is inevitable that the testimony of holiness will meet with persecutions in the church (sect); and more especially when we remember that a vast number of them are not regenerated.

The true martyrs of the Holy Ghost receive persecution and ill usage with the meek and patient Spirit of the dove and lamb. And they that show any other tempers may be martyrs, but not martyrs of the Holy Spirit. Some received persecution and misuse in such ill sort as to prove them not perfect witnesses to the lowly Lamb and heavenly dove.

Martin Luther, once thought “it would be a pretty sight to see the pope and all the cardinals hanging in a row:” showing that resentment was still in his heart. He and many others have had and still may have the martyrs virus in them; and yet are not the “holy, harmless, undefiled,” martyrs of the Spirit.

Wesley and De Rentz would not have thought or breathed the words of Luther. What a contrast between Calvin and Fox when viewed from the standpoint of lowly, patient unresenting love!

The martyrs of the Spirit’s dispensation are those who count all things loss for the excellency of an indwelling Christ. They deliberately choose to be counted the filth and offscouring of the world: to bear all things, hope all things, and endure all things. They look into eternity and see all the vanity of earth, and the transitoriness of all earthly sorrows, they have chosen to go out into the eternal summer of humble love and oneness with Christ, regardless of the cost. They suffer and die if need be.

Michael De Molinos, for teaching and witnessing to the sanctifying words of the Spirit, was thrust by his own fellow priests into a lonely dungeon where he patiently lingered for eleven years. Bishop La Combe, for preaching and witnessing to the indwelling Spirit, was imprisoned for twenty-seven years until his splendid mind was eclipsed by the unbearable woes of a lonely cell.

Fenelon, on the account of sanctification was banished for life to the discease of Camby, and still trusted his enemies with the gentleness of a little child.

Wesley was often dragged about, bruised, having his clothes torn to pieces by mad mobs instigated by his fellow preachers of the English church; yet he only exclaimed, in a mild voice: “Friends what harm have I done to any of you?” Mr. De Rentz was intensely hated by his own mother because of his extreme piety; and she tried by a long law suit to rob him of his inheritance. Yet he treated her with the tender affection due to an angel.

Hester Ann Rowe (Mrs. Rogers), on account of the Spirit work in the heart, was by her mother reduced to a servant; and when that mother was very ill, the young and delicate Hester would do all the housework by day, and lovingly watch and wait upon the sick mother all night, week after week until she nearly killed her frail body. Ministers of the M. E. Presbyterian and other churches (so-called) who have become clear witnesses to the baptism of fire, have in some cases been by the church authorities ejected from their pulpits and have gone into humble fields, gladly singing, “Anywhere with Jesus.” Time would fail me to enumerate the illustrious company of those, who, in modern times, have overcome “evil with good.” The great majority of them will remain hidden from view till they come with the “glorious appearing of our Lord Jesus,” who will unveil the graces of their lowly lives to an admiring universe.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS.

_____

1 QUESTION. Can a person get saved who owes a debt, but honestly and sincerely intends to pay it if he can?

1 ANSWER. Yes. If he has an honest heart and meets the requirments of the Word, the Lord will save his soul, and concerning the debt will take the will for the deed as long as he is honest at heart, until he becomes able to pay the same, then he will require the deed performed by the payment.

2 Q. Will a person, who is saved, lose salvation if he contracts a debt, and then cannot possibly pay it?

L. A. P.

2 A. If a person contracts an honorable debt and should afterwards become penniless, he need not lose salvation over the matter. The Lord requires no impossibilities of any one. Then is the very time a person is in need of the Lord who is a very present help in time of need. The promises of God are just as much to the poor as to any one else, and he who trusts fully in the Lord will find a way out.

__________

CARELESS, OR CARELESSNESS.

_____

IN Webster’s unabridged Dictionary we find the following definitions to the above terms.

CARELESS. — Having no care, heedless, unconcerned, negligent, inattentive, unmindful; and

CARELESSNESS. — The state or quality of being without care, heedlessness, inattention, etc.

To be careless is just the opposite of being careful. Now the qualities implied of which we wish to speak, are those of being heedless, negligent, inattentive, unmindful, unconcerned, etc. First then, the careless person to which we refer is careless and unconcerned about his temporal and spiritual matters to such an extent as to show that he is also heedless and negligent. It is amazing to see to what extent, the habit of carelessness and negligence will lead people. Although they may have been fully saved, yet the enemy is not unconcerned nor is he ever negligent, and little by little almost imperceptable at first, he begins to lead the child of God away on this line causing him to neglect some of his duties until “a more convenient season.” Especially will the devil try him on this point if he was possessed of such a disposition in any degree, before he was saved, he will have a strong tendency to drift back again into this same, old rut again unless he is continually on his guard.

For instance, if he is a man of business you may probably find him negligent about keeping a paper account of his tranactions, not paying his bills promptly when he can do so; heedless and unmindful about fulfilling his promises causing inconvenience and perhaps loss on the part of others, or if he is a farmer or mechanic or a person who uses tools and implements you may see them scattered hither and thither, probably left where he last used them and in a condition unfit for satisfactory service. If he borrows anything of his neighbor he is liable to keep it until the owner calls for it or orders it returned. He is unmindful of the principle taught in the old adage which says, “Have a place for every thing and keep every thing in its place.” He forgets that these things all belong to God, but he uses them as if they were of little value, and a large portion of the valuable time given him, is wasted as the result of his negligence.

Instances have come under our own observation where persons who professed to be saved, were actually so careless and negligent about their temporal affairs that one third or more of the precious time given them was wasted, and many dollars, which could have been used in spreading the gospel, were spent as a direct result of their negligence. We have gone into homes where the appearance of things all around us indicated a lack of interest and attention that was painful to behold. The personal appearance, also of the housekeeper was such as to betoken a great lack of care and attention. We noticed, too, that the children were made to suffer, by not having their little needs properly looked after, all because this spirit of carelessness had taken hold upon the parents. It is certainly not to the glory of God, that his children present a tattered and somewhat slouchy appearance, when with a little care and attention it could be avoided.

Paul the apostle says, Let all things be done decently and in order, and “whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” Again Jesus says, Ye are the light of the world. How does the light of the careless and negligent person appear in the eyes of the world? Is it such as would tend to win them to Christ? Some persons are heedless and unmindful, with reference to only a few things, but it shows the devil is at work. Beware. We have mentioned but a few of the very many ways the enemy has of leading souls away and causing them to set an improper example before the world in their literal matters, but the effect produced by a careless and negligent habit is also destructive to our own spiritual matters. It takes hold of the mental faculties and effects the memory, so that when we hear the Word, the devil makes his appearance directly and steals it away, becuse we are unmindful and heedless, and thus it becomes unfruitful. Many souls have gone to destruction, some of which we know, because they failed to shake off their careless and negligent habits, and wake up to their true condition.

Now dear ones, we have seen a spirit of negiligence and carelessness manifested in a greater or less degree among the children of God, and this is why we have been impressed to write this and sound the note of warning. May God save his people from the tricks of the devil, and enable them to heed the Savior’s command, Watch and pray, lest they enter into temptation, is my prayer.

A. Radabaugh.

PRAY FOR YOKE CHILDREN.

I say, mothers and fathers, pray for your children and don’t give up in despair, and feel that the Lord is not what his word says, because your prayers are not answered immediately; for if they are not answered while you still remain in the body, if they are prayers of faith they well be answered some day. if not when we wish. For we know the Lord is the same today and forever. Amen.

I wish to say through the GOSPEL TRUMPET that some one who understands music is desired to come to the Shepherd School house, near Preston P. O., Kemper Co., Miss., to teach music; especially the music of the “Anthems” and “Echoes from Glory.” There are quite a number of saints there who desire the truth, and to walk in all the light of God.

Dear Saints of the Living God: We are still enjoying perfect victory in our souls. The work is progressing very well here. The Lord is healing the sick, justifying and sanctifying souls. Seven followed the Lord in baptism and a few have denounced their babel craft, but O how few are in a fit condition to come out without consecrating. “The people are spoiled for lack of knowledge.” Many doors are open for the work which will be effectual in the salvation of souls. I was at a meeting at a private house, crowded with eager listeners and two consecrated, last week. One company can find constant work in various parts of the city and surrounding towns. Pray for us.

To the Family of God, Greeting: God has called us to work for him in the vineyard to save the lost and help gather in the remnant scattered in the sects. I believe God has precious jewels in Babylon and they need help speedily. We are, through grace divine, ready to answer any call. We purpose to move our family and stay for a few months or longer in a place as God shall direct. We need help, and would suggest if any one reading this feels called of God to work in the way of singing and talking for God, who are ready for labor, ready for fasting and prayer, and self denial for souls, to write us at once at G. T. Ave., Battle Creek, Mich. Also any one led of God to send for us to come to their town or city write

Christian Brethren: May grace and peace abound to you all through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. We are saved to the uttermost, well in body, and doing well. Since our last report Bro. Randolph and I have labored at five different places, viz: Praise Chapel, (the church there was built up and edified. Several renewed their consecrations and one sister got delivered from the U. B. cage of foul spirits.) Pleasant Grove, (one sister reclaimed.) Slack school house, (much prejudice removed.) Willow Chapel, (three renewed their consecrations; may God bless the church at that place and help them to neglect not the assembling of themselves together.) and Brock, O., (several renewed their covenant with the Lord at that place.) May God help them all to be diligent and keep them hid away with Christ in God. From the last named place, Bro. Randolph left for his home in Michigan, feeling led to labor for souls there awhile. Bro. Wickersham and myself are now holding the fort at Geneva. Those desiring meeting, address us at New Pittsburg, Ind. Your brethren,

Dearly Beloved Saints of God: We are very glad to once more report to you of victory in Jesus’ name. Since our last report, God has truly been with us in mighty power and we have had constant victory all along the line; and we can safely say that

Page 3

the past four weeks have been the most blessed of all our lives, and we feel very grateful to God, and render unto him all the glory and praise, for the many things that he has done for us, and the precious souls that he has saved.

The meeting at Walkerton, Ind. closed after about one week of wonderful victory: just how much good was done. God alone knows; there were quite a number of consecrations. One who was possessed with devils, was gloriously delivered, and saved of God. The last night of the meeting we had a very precious ordinance meeting, after which I took train for my home in Ohio, and God blessed us with a very precious meeting with our dear friends. We were very thankful to meet them again, and our stay at home, although limited to one week, was a very happy and profitable one, and God gave us souls while there. On the evening of the 4th. we commenced meeting about six miles from Knox. Ind., which lasted over two Sabbaths. This was a new place, and the people were very anxious for the truth, and by this meeting and one previously held four miles north, the whole country seems to be open for the truth. There were about eight consecrations in this meeting and several others asked our prayers; also two wonderful cases of healing

Sister Lodema Kaser and two of her sisters helped us in that meeting and were much used of God. From there we went by wagon to South Bend, stopping at Waikerton for a few days, being with the dear saints in a very precious meetng. There were ten or eleven consecrations during the meeting, and most all went on to perfection. Dear Bro. Strang, from Waikerton, Ind., was with us, whom God used in delivering the word Also Sister Kaser was much blessed of God in preaching.

We will be at this place for a couple of weeks the Lord willing, then move on as God shall lead on our western tour. We have received several calls from Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri and feel that God will send us there soon, but just which place we will visit first, we cannot say yet. Those desiring our services between here and central Kansas, let us know at once. Yours in Christ,

W. J. Henry, Albany, Ill.

Dear Saints and Trumpet Family: May the blessings of God ever rest upon you and the power of his Spirit ever illuminate your minds to heavenly visions; revealing his word to you as it is in Christ. Oh how I do thank God for the GOSPEL TRUMPET every week, that brings me the glad tidings from one end of the United States to the other; and also from Europe, of the mighty power of God in saving and sanctifying his people on earth to do his will; by manifesting his pure gospel to the world through the holiness people.

I am praising God to day for victory in my soul over the flesh and the power of Satan and all sectism; and for the power of his Spirit to preach his word.

The work in the south, as far as I know, is progressing. I have had many gospel calls this summer and fall, that I was unable to fill, and have been in several new fields, where the Lord richly blessed his word in leading people from under sect bondage. A two days meeting was held at the Wilson School house. This is a new field. Five precious souls stepped out on the full promises of God. On my return I preached to a large congregation at Enondale. Had good attention and behavior and I have many reasons to believe that much good will be done at this place in the future. I am at home this week with my wife and children and will go to Eutaw, Ala. next week and from there will go west if the Lord wills. Yours all on the altar and sanctified now,

Robert A. Charlton.

To all the Readers of the Trumpet, Greeting: We are happy to report victory in our souls, and success in the meetings we have recently held. We left our homes near Springfield, Ohio Oct. 14, and came to Tionesta, Pa., where we held a two weeks meeting. A few persons gave their hearts to the Lord, and many others respected the truth.

Oct. 30, we went to West Monterey, Pa., to attend the assembly meeting at that place. On our arrival we found Bro. Warner and company there carrying on the work in the Lord’s order, who remained with us over two Sabbaths; then departed, because of pressing calls, to other parts. Our company remained three weeks longer. This meeting at first was not very successful, but before it closed the fogs cleared away and a goodly number of souls were saved. A few honest souls were rescued from sectism, among whom were two dear young brethren whom the Lord has called into the ministry. The ordinances of feet washing and communion were observed on the last Sabbath evening before Bro. Warner and company departed. At the close of the series of meeting we immersed a number of souls in the Alleghany river.

Yesterday we came to this place and commenced a protracted meeting in the evening. From here we will return again to Forest Co., Pa., thence farther eastward, whithersoever the Lord may direct. We solicit the prayers of all God’s saints. Let all the brethren in the east, who desire our help, address us at Ticonesta, Pa. Your brethren under the blood,

Wm. G. Schell and B. E. Warren.

Payne, O., Nov. 28, 1893.

Dear Brethren: I am at home again in the name of the Lord. Sunday Nov. 5, with a goodly number of the saints, Bro. Bolds also in company, we drove into the town of Hartsells, Ala., expecting to hold services in a college building according to previous arrangement by Bro. S. S. Stinson and those concerned; but on our arrival in town, we found the devil had been at work to hinder the Word from going forth, using a young school-master to lock the college, and so locked out the Lord Jesus and his gospel, as well as his little ones. I pray God to pity and have mercy on that young man; but seeing the goodly number of people (saints and sinners) from far and near, coming, anxious to hear the truth and feeling the Spirit of God stirring my soul to deliver his message to the dear people of that town and surrounding country, I suggested to the brethren that some one see the town authorities and get permission to hold services in the streets, which was done and the privilege granted, but while Bro. Stinson and I were looking for a convenient place, Mr. A. Roundtree, editor of the town paper, whom we esteem as a gentleman and friend, suggested we see if an empty store room, near by, could be obtained to preach in, adding, Here is — to help pay for the room. The room was granted free, and I returned to the college and announced the same to the still increasing crowd, and all resorted to the store where we were helped by the Holy Spirit to speak the word of God, for the space of about two hours and a half, to the dear people. Some seated on the counters and store boxes and chairs, etc., which had been hastily prepared for the occassion, and many others standing. We spoke from Matt. 22:41-46. Oh God help us all to examine ourselves, look around and see what we do “think of Christ.” We saw in this occasion how sectarians try to keep the truth from the people, while sinners offer their means to help. In the evening we returned to Mt. Zion, and Monday one was immersed in the name of Jesus. Friday I took my leave of Brother and Sister Bolds and all the dear saints and friends in Alabama, and started northward, expecting to stop at Crothersville, in southern Ind., but when I got to the post office, found no words from the saints in that part. So I came on directly to Sidney, O., where we found the family all well. Met a few times with the church and then came on home, found Brother and Sister Worden and company here. They had held several days meeting with the church with good results. Met with the church in Payne, Saturday night the 25, and five dear souls bowed at the altar and were reclaimed. Oh my dearly beloved, let us “never hold our peace day nor night, yea, ye that make mention of the Lord keep not silent, and give him no rest, till he establish Jerusalem (Zion) and make her a praise in the earth.” I am your free servant and brother in the one body, and desirous to see the unity of the faith kept in the bond of peace. Finally brethren farewell, be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, five in peace, and the God of love and peace shall be with you. Amen. Pray for us.

Dear Saints: I feel led this morning, by the spirit of God, to write a few lines to the GOSPEL TRUMPET. I can praise God for complete victory in my soul over all the powers of the enemy, through the precious blood of our dear Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I know that the blood of Jesus cleanseth me from all sin and all filthiness of the flesh, and everything that pertains to a wicked, or an evil spirit. Glory be to our God forever and ever. We are now holding a gospel siege, on the corner of Union Avenue and Ash Street, East Portland. We will be here for several weeks, God being willing. We have met with a number of dear saints here, and others who are anxious to know the truth. If any of God’s dear children from other places should be passing this way, we would be pleased to meet them. Hallelujah! From your brother in the faith of Christ, fully saved, sanctified by a second, definite work of grace.

Dear Saints: I feel lead to write my testimony. I was under the care of different doctors for over six years, but I scarcely got any relief. At times, I thought I must die soon. I was a professor of religion, but I did not belong to any sect, and I knew nothing of the evening light; but God spared my life until I heard the true Word, and the Lord saved and sanctified me, and healed my weak body. Praise his holy name!

I was able to walk but very little during those dreary years, and was not able to use my hands on account of some trouble in my left side, which the doctors pronounced a cancer. But when I learned of the Great Physician, and gave up all to Jesus, he soon removed all my trouble. Praise God forever! I am now able to do my own work, and am able to walk from one to three miles without rest, as quick as most any one. None but the children of God can tell how blessed and happy I am. And I give God all the praise and glory for it.

Dear Saints of the Most High, Greeting: I wish to add a word of praise to God for his saving power in my soul.

“I am abiding now with Jesus,
I am sanctified and free,
I have found the second blessing,
And the Lord abides with me.”

I stepped out upon the promise some time ago. I would rather have this sweet experience than to be a king upon his throne. Though all the world forsake us, Jesus, the all sufficient Friend will never leave nor forsake us. I rejoice with an exceeding great joy that I have found such a Friend. I know he is always willing to hear us when we call upon him. I always go to Jesus when in trouble or distress and find a refuge upon his loving breast. Now I know he can save the chief of sinners and reclaim the poor wandering backslider. He can touch and tender the hardest of hearts. I feel like warning all sinners to flee from the wrath to come. Before I was saved I did not know there was so much joy and gladness in living for Jesus, but glory to God it is peace and happiness. Now I ask all of God’s saints to pray for me that 1 may be a useful instrument in working for the Lord. I am your sister,

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: I want to testify for the dear Lord of what he is doing for me. Praise his dear name! Though I am absent in the flesh I am with you in the Spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ. Col. 2:5. I can say without a single doubt in my heart, just now, that Jesus sweetly saves me to the uttermost, and keeps me by his mighty power from sin; gives me complete victory over all doubting spirits. O how glad I am in my soul for ever finding my shield of faith once again after such a long search for it. It is the same bright one that the dear Lord gave me about one year ago when Bro. Warner and Bro. Byrum were present with us at Kenesaw. I indeed heard the still small voice say to me that day, “Thy sins which are many are all blotted out.” And bless the Lord I am serving the same Jesus to day. Truly I can sing the praise of our God now with the Spirit and understanding also. Oh what a river of peace is flowing in my soul, and its blessing increase flowing deep in my soul. Pray much for me that I may keep the shield of faith. Your sister all sold out for Jesus,

Dear Saints of God: I feel led of the spirit of God to write my testimony. I feel that it is to the glory of God to tell the brethren and sisters in Christ, that I am saved from all my sins, and sanctified by a second work of grace; “for both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one; for which cause, he is not ashamed to call them brethren.” Praise God for salvation that saves one from all their sins; and dead to the world, and the things of the world. Christ has saved me from the world, and I am not of the world, even as he is not of the world. O how he leads me out in his ocean of love, where I have so much joy, peace, and comfort. It is all the work of my blessed Savior, that I am saved, sanctified, and redeemed through his blood. I love the narrow way, for it is God’s holy way.

God has a few saved children at this place, and we have wonderful meetings. He is working on the hearts of the people, and some are under conviction. Four have been saved from their sins. We do pray, that He will soon open the way for his true children to hold a meeting at this place. Your brother,

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus: I am fully saved and sanctified by a second work of grace, ready to meet my Master. I believe it is to the glory of God for me to sell my little place which he has given me, that he may use it to his glory. I believe if God’s store-house had more of his sanctified means in it, that his work would move on more to his glory. The Word says, “Bring all your tithes into the store-house, that there may be meat in mine house.” Now if all were in the store-house, we would see more power, and more souls saved. Brethren, let us make haste while it is called to day, for fear the blessed God of peace comes and finds us holding some of our blessed Master’s meat, which might have been the means of saving some poor soul. Let not the blood of any one be in our hands. I will sell my home as soon as the Lord sends me a buyer. I ask merely what it cost me.

If any of God’s true fire-brands could come here, please write and let me know, and we will, the Lord willing, rent a hall and send money for them. I have written to Bro. Willis, but have not heard from him yet. Pray much for us here. Your brother in the love of Jesus,

IDOLATRY.

_____

AS the time draws near when the world’s idolatrous worshiping of Christmas begins, I feel impressed of God to write a few words of warning, especially to the young, concerning the amount of precious time, money and strength that is wasted, year after year, by the giddy mass of humanity. Money that belongs to God is wasted on the foolish vanities of life, and I am sorry to say, sometimes by those who ought to know better. I, for one, have been a long time learning the precious lesson I now venture to lay before you, for prayerful meditation. I would say to any that are or may be tempted and drawn away from God on this line, and are planning to make unnecessary, extravagant and ornamental presents, can you not find some little mittenless fingers to cover, or some little feet to knit stockings for, for Jesus’ sake?

You know he says in Mark 9:41, that even a cup of cold water given in his name will bring a sure reward. And perhaps there are some within your reach, whose parents have gone to labor for perishing souls, and having trusted their little ones to God’s tender care, have left them behind. Now God’s way of caring for such is through his children; and if such little ones are allowed to suffer, because of neglect on our part, who will account for it before God?

My prayer is that God wall both impress and enable each of his children to make an extra effort now, before the stinging cold weather comes, to do something for him on this line. One need not search long, I am sure, when so many little mouths are waiting to be filled, hands, feet and bodies to be clothed. Oh! may God wake his people up to action soon. Perhaps I am making it too strong: especially for those who have the will, but not the way. To such let me say, I well know what the enemy of souls can do to hinder God’s children, and now that the end is so near, he is making desperate efforts to overthrow precious souls, and hinder willing hands. But there is one thing he cannot hinder and that is prayer. Let all pray earnestly, both for God’s work and for his workers. This life of warfare is nearly done; if well done, we will have rejoicing when the Master comes, and not in another’s work. And to hear that sweet voice say, “well done come up higher,” will be reward enough to pay for a life of toil and sacrifice, while here below. Oh! the thought fills my soul with joy unspeakable and full of glory. Amen, and amen! Saved now,

Emma I. Coston.

__________

DELIVERED FROM SATAN’S DEVICES.

_____

I feel led of the Lord to write to the glory of God, and the edification of the saints scattered abroad, here and elsewhere. As I see the devastation of the enemy here in this community amongst those who once were the children of God, it makes me feel like crying out with Paul, in Acts 20:29, 30, — “For I know this that after my departing shall grievious wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your ownselves shall men arise, speaking preverse things, to draw away disciples after them.” This has proven only too true in our midst. The wolf has entered in amongst us and has not spared the young and tender; the weak, yea, and some of the strong ones too, have been so scared and frightened that they did not know which way to run, or what course to pursue.

O how many ways Satan has, in these “perilous” and “last times,” to lead souls astray. Some went into anti-ordinance ism, some he sat down on the stool of do-nothing, when they fell asleep, to rise, I fear, no more; but the greater number he sent into fanaticism. Satan even had the boldness to make some believe that they were past being taught by man, not withstanding Paul’s instruction to Timothy, 2 Tim. 2:2; others would look to a strange manifestation, (which the devil made them believe was the power of God,) for instructions and guidance, instead of the Word. Oh! How the devil does mislead poor souls when they get their eyes away from Jesus, and want something else besides what God sees fit to give. Like the children of Israel, when they craved flesh, they got their desire; but while the flesh was yet between their teeth, the wrath of God was kindled against them. — Num. 11:33. So these poor souls were not satisfied with the measure of joy the Lord saw fit to deal out to them, they wanted more outward manifestation, and the devil, that crafty old liar, and deceiver, stepped in and supplied their craving: the result was, after a time God’s Spirit left them. But Satan still supplied them with power, and as long as they have that, he makes them think they are saved. But thanks be to God, the time came when there was to be a separation, between the children of light, and those of darkness. Yea, the time of real discerning between the children of God and the children of the devil. Oh how wonderful, how grand and glorious, this separation came about: though it was painful to some, to me at least, to denounce those that we esteemed very highly. It was sorrowful to our heart to have the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood, that we once enjoyed in Jesus, severed, but dearly beloved, the works of God and those of the devil, cannot live together.

Paul says, What, know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost? — 1 Cor. 6:19. Again in 1 Cor. 3:16, Know ye not that ye are the temple of God? If then our body is the temple of God, can we give it over to be a plaything for the devil, to be abused, tortured, made unfiit for manual labor? Our minds also belong to God, but by partaking of this devil power, that too becomes affected and weakened, so that they are uncapable of solid, deep reasoning, or searching out the deep things of God. There are many that are not willing to take the word of God, as the man of their counsel, but look to their own pernicious way, and a revelation from somewhere, they know not where.

But the Lord Jesus gave us great joy and peace by denouncing this devil infatuation, and I was glad to see some delivered, made free from Satan’s domain, denounce him, and confess that they were really under the devil’s power. Oh glory to Jesus, for a real willingness to be taught by those that are able to teach, and those who have the discerning. Satan may palm off his shoddy stuff on some of God’s little ones, but if we are honest and sincere, He will send some of his “flying messengers” to pour out his word like a mighty flood to overflow every “hiding place.” Oh hallelujah to our Lord Jesus Christ! Amen.

Watch, watch and pray, search out all things, try them by the word, for time is short and perilous. Satan knows his time is short, so he comes having great wrath, as a roaring lion and an angel of light. Those that he cannot devour, he tries to deceive, but God has said, As thy day, so shall thy strength be, and my grace is sufficient. Amen. Your brother in Jesus, saved, sanctified and kept,

J. G. Neff.

BIBLE READINGS.

BIBLE readings are a good thing and it is the best way to study the word of God, when they are rightly connected and arranged by the light of the Holy Spirit, and when used by the anointing of the same, they are edifying and interesting. But a collection of disconnected scripture of about fifty or sixty passages, are very dry when read by a man not anointed by the Holy Ghost, and it will weary a congregation and kill a meeting about as quick as anything.

It is a good thing to have an abundance of the word of God, but it is as good, or better, to know how to divide and use it so it will have the desired effect. We may have the sword, but it will do no good unless we know how to use it, to cut off all the false doctrines and opinions, etc., of men. Another thing is to have the convincing power, of the Holy Ghost, to accompany it; for without this, it would be just as dry as reading a history, or any other work of men. The people are not liable to believe, that this reformation that is sweeping over the land to day, is of God, unless there is a greater power manifested, by the saints of the living God in preaching it, than there is in sectism. The word, which is the sword of the spirit, is dead, unless the spirit is there to quicken and use it, without the weak assistance of men’s wisdom.

Dearly beloved, I don’t believe that the Holy Ghost, the third person in the trinity, is honored in these days as he should be. Oh! may God send out more Holy Ghost men, who have a convincing power in presenting the word, which is beyond any natural power. I know I have seen the cause greatly hurt by the workers reading a lot of scripture, without any Holy Ghost in it. The congregation would get tired out, and disgusted, the first two or three nights of the meeting, and they would not come back any more. Now it seems that a man of God sent out to preach the gospel, with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven, ought to hold his congregations, and to cause the interest to increase, as the meeting goes on. To be sure, there are a few exceptions. But I think that some of us need to go down to Jerusalem and tarry until we are endued with power, from on high. I say we, because I will have to acknowlege that I was asleep on this line, to some extent, until I read the letter, written by Bro. Warner, and also the piece, by Sister Cole, entitled “Robbing God.” Then the signs will follow us that believe; the sinners will be converted, believers sanctified, devils cast out, sick healed, and the people will be convinced that this is the strait way, and the only way. that leads to heaven.

My prayer is for God to send out more real fire-brands, with much of the truth in their souls, and it set on fire, by the Holy Ghost; men that will deny themselves of the comforts of this life, and will fast a few meals, for the salvation of precious, dying souls, so that this true gospel be not blamed. Your brother in the family of God,

OSTIS WILSON.

HUMILITY.

_____

MANY young Christians think they can get on very well without this grace, but I find it very essential in the Christian life. Many of us learn obedience by the things we suffer. Whom the Lord loveth, he chasteneth. — Heb. 12:6. Sometimes young people when they are first saved, have a very exalted opinion of themselves and look over the many places of work in the church, then choose for themselves the high place of a preacher, and start out to work for the Lord. They build great air castles and imaginations of future happiness and success; they meditate on the word of God and their minds seem to be fruitful. So they send out their appointment and go to fill it, having great anticipations of success. They depend on God to help them, and he fails to do it, and they make a miserable failure, then go home badly discouraged, feeling that they have depended on God and he has disappointed them; while the Bible says there is no want to them that fear Him. — Psa. 34:9.

Now dear friends let us examine and see if we can find where the trouble lies. Let us not charge God foolishly. Job 1:22. We understand that God has promised to help in time of need: and hath said “my grace is sufficient.” We believe God does just what he says he will do. Then the fault lies somwhere else.

In the light of God’s word, let us examine ourselves and see if we are in God’s order. How came we in the rank of the preachers? by choice of our own? Let us hear what God says about it. No man taketh this honor to himself. But he that is called as was Aaron. — Heb. 5:4. Jesus says he that exalteth himself shall be abased, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. — Luke 14:11.

In the few verses before this declaration. He taught a beautiful lesson on humility. He saw how they sought out the best rooms and chief seats at the dinner. He said to them when you are bid to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room, lest a more honorable man than you be bidden, and him and the man that bade thee come and say to thee, Give place to this man. Then you will in disgrace, have to take a lower seat.

Now dear friends we are bidden to the feast of heaven, and let us humble ourselves at the lowest seat, then we will not be abased. If Jesus finds us coo low, he will invite us up higher, then we will have honor in the sight of all men.

“Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.” — 1 Pet. 5:6. Before honor is humility. — Prov. 15:33. All of you be subject one to another and be clothed with humility. 1 Pet. 5:9.

I am now taking a low seat at the feast; I am willing for the Lord to choose my place for me as it pleases him. If I had the right to choose and God should require it of me, I would choose the place of a bread miner for the harvesters. Oh the beauty I see, in the divine economy is wonderful to behold! God placing the members in the body as it pleases him; and man having nothing to do with the arranging of this grand institution called the church. If this does not suit you, you had better remain with the sects. Praise God, I am willing to surrender my license and let God have his way. I rejoice to have this grand privilege of being one of God’s little ones, and accepting my place at his hand. Glory be to him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will, without consulting the feelings of the carnal mind, which is enmity against God; not subject to his laws. As many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Jesus says take my yoke upon you and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, in me you shall find rest to your souls. — Matt. 11:29. God has said that every soul that will not hear this teacher shall be cut off from among his people. We become as little children. He that receives not the kingdom of God as a little child shall not enter therein. — Mark 10:15. The blessing that we seek, is found just the opposite to what the carnal mind thinks it is. When the carnal mind says to you, go up and get the blessing, you go down and you will find it. Cast the net on the right side of the ship and you shall find. They cast therefore and were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes. — John 21:6.

Dear ones, we will find abundantly of the good things of the kingdom, when we obey Jesus the great Teacher of divine things. If we fail to obey him, the devil will everlastingly have us fishing on the wrong side, and starving for the want of meat. Hearken unto Jesus and eat that which is good, and let thy soul delight itself in fatness. — Isa. 55:2. We will never be without something to eat spiritually or temporally as long as we obey the instructions of Jesus. Trust in the Lord and do good, so shalt thou dwell in the land and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thyself in the Lord, and he shall give thee the desire of thy heart. — Psa. 37:3, 4.

THY TESTIMONIES ARE WONDERFUL.

Dearly Beloved: My soul is overflowing with praises to God for what he has done for me. I have just read the TRUMPET of Nov. 9th, and my soul was touched by the two pieces written by Bro. Warner and Sister Allaway, to see how souls are pining for the truth and then to think perhaps I could have done a little more than I have. Oh my God, awake me more and more, that I may ever give every moment, every talent and every cent to the perfect will of God. I have lived to all the light I have had since I was saved, but in the pieces I see where I can make one more step heavenward. Praise God! and by God’s help I will. Oh that all who claim to be wholly consecrated to God, would only prove it when put to the test! how much faster then this work would move. Dearly beloved, God knows I am wholly his. Oh bless his name forever! Your unprofitable servant,

Dear Children of God: I have been very much interested in the article in the TRUMPET of Nov. 16 th, on “No-Sectism.” It was quite awhile after God showed me the true church, before I could explain to others why this holiness movoment was no sect; while it was quite satisfactory to myself. Webster gives the deffinition of sect as “a denomination which dissents from an established church; a body of persons who have separated from others in virtue of some special doctrines which they hold.” So they could say, “Why are not you people a sect? You have separated yourselves from the established churches.”

I knew there was a difference, yet I couldn’t answer. My prayer to God was, Show me what thou wouldst have me to know, for thy word says we must be ready to give an answer of the hope that is within us. In his own time the light flashed upon me, why, the Lord established the church; and anything differing, or cut off from it, was a sect. How clear, how plain it was! I could explain it to others in such a way that they were silent. Webster’s deffinition was correct. Oh how wonderful is the “sea of glass!” How blessed are the feet that are upon it! We had a grove meeting here last August, held by Sisters Shoffner and Fink, and Bro. and Sister Austin; we also had the pleasure of having Bro. Byruin with us a few days. Oh how I enjoyed hearing the pure word taught, although during the time I passed through some of the bitterest trials of my life, still I could praise God that my house was budded upon the rock. While they lifted up the standard of the Lord Jesus Christ unflinchingly, numbers acknowledged the truth and three or four came to the altar. I do not think any of them were saved, as they do not meet with us when we come together in His name. Some of the saints have come up from Sister Rogers’ neighborhood, fifteen miles south of here and we have had several precious meetings. If God’s church were something that people could have joined without salvation, by putting their names down somewhere “in the earth,” it would have had quite a following here. But praises be to our Father, no one can get into the church that Christ built, without being born of God.

We have the most beautiful grove here I have ever seen. It is an old fair-ground. I have felt for years, that it ought to be used to the glory of the Lord, and God’s children that were here during the grove meeting, felt as I did about it. I feel that it would be in God’s order, to have a general camp meeting here next fall. Then the brethren can decide what would be best for the future. I am almost sure we could get it. Will the dear ones take this in earnest prayer to the Lord? There are only two of us here in the evening light, Sister Smith and myself.

How often I feel like a stranger in a strange land, and how sad it makes me, when I see the utter darkness and cold formalism that enshroud the people; and yet how thankful I am for the blessed way the Father has led me, and that I am so preciously hid away in his pavilion, where it is ever light.

“In the secret of His presence,
Never more can foes alarm;
In the shadow of the highest,
I can meet them with a psalm:

For the strong pavilion hides me,
Turns their fi’ry darts aside.
And I know whate’er betides me,
I Shall live because He died.”

I have never forgotten the dear ones I met at the Wichata camp meeting. I always think of them and pray for them. I count it such a privilege to meet God’s children, and the memory of them is so precious to me. Your sister, all on the altar,

M. Ella Sain.
