JESUS HEALS ME.

_____

Savior, now I come to Thee,
Weak and helpless with disease,
Asking Thee to set me free,
Give me life, and health, and peace.

Cho. — I am trusting. Lord, in Thee,
Dear Lamb of Calvary:
Humbly at Thy cross I bow,
Jesus heals me, heals me now.

Break the strength of Satan’s hand.
Speak this sore disease away;
For I know at thy command
Every power must obey.

Precious Savior, this I know,
’Tis Thy will to set me free;
On me now this grace bestow.
As my faith looks up to Thee.

Now I stand upon Thy Word.
Now the promise I believe:
It is mine, I take it, Lord,
Perfect healing I receive.

HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD.

_____

(Continued from last issue.)

THE CHURCH AS A FAMILY IS HOLY.

“Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named.” Eph. 3:15. “Now ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints [holy ones], and of the household of God.” 2:19. “Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus.” Heb. 3:1. The brethren are holy which compose the family; consequently it is a holy family. Praise God for such a family in heaven and in earth, in all the will of God!

HOLY IN LIFE.

“For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts we should live soberly, righteously [holy, just, good] and godly, in this present world.” Tit. 2:11, 12. “The oath which he sware to our father Abraham, that he would grant unto us, that we, being delivered out of the hands of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness all the days of our life.” Luke 1:73-75.

HOLY IN CONVERSATION.

“But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation.” 1 Pet. 1:15. “Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness.” 2 Pet. 3:11. “For our conversation is in heaven: from whence also we look for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Phil. 3:20. “Only let your conversation be as becometh the gospel of Christ.” Phil. 1:27.

HOLY IN WALK.

“He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.” 1 Jno. 2:6. “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth.” 1 Pet. 2:21, 22.

THE BIBLE WHICH GOVERNS THE CHURCH IS HOLY.

“Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy Scriptures.” Rom. 1:2. “And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for* doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” 2 Tim. 3:15-17.

THE BIBLE IS PURE.

“The words of the Lord are pure … as silver tried in a furnace of … ..fied seven times.” Psa. 12:5. “The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.” Psa. 19:8. “Thy word is very pure: therefore thy servant loveth it.” 119:140. “Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.” Prov. 30:6.

THE FAITH OF THE CHURCH IS HOLY.

“That whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel.” Phil. 1:27. “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost.” Jude 20.

IT IS OF GOD. “For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect?” Rom. 3:3.

IT IS THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, FAITH, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” Gal. 5:22, 23.

IT IS A COMMON FAITH, to God’s people. “To Titus, mine own son after the common faith.” Tit. 1:4.

IT IS A PRECIOUS FAITH. “Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them of like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Savior Jesus Christ.” 2 Pet. 1:1.

BECAUSE JESUS IS THE AUTHOR. “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.” Heb. 12:2.

IT IS GIVEN THE SAINTS (holy ones). “Beloved, when I gave diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered to the saints [holy ones].” Jude 3. “Here is the patience and faith of the saints (holy ones) Rev. 13:10.

IT IS THE VICTORY THAT OVERCOMETH THE WORLD, even our faith. 1 Jno. 5:4. Praise God! the holy faith given to the church of God is a triumphant faith, which overcomes all things. “Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.” Mark 9:23. What a precious faith indeed, our loving Father has so richly bestowed on his holy church!

HIS MINISTERS ARE HOLY.

“But ye shall be named the priests of the Lord: men shall call you the ministers of our God: ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves.” Isa. 61:6. “And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation.” Ex. 19:6. 1 Pet. 2:5. “Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, and hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father.” Rev. 1:5, 6. “And hath made us unto our God kings and priests, and we shall reign on the earth.” Rev. 5:10. “They which receive abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Christ Jesus.” Rom. 5:17. A bishop or elder, must be blameless, as the steward of God; not self-willed, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre; but a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate or self-governed [Greek]. So a preacher must be holy according to the Bible. If not they are not God’s ministers. “Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.” 1 Cor. 4:1, 2. Those ministers who are not holy are not sent of God, and are blind leaders; from such turn away. 1 Tim. 6:3-5. 2 Tim. 3:1-5.

ALL THE MEMBERS OF GOD’S CHURCH ARE HOLY.

“So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.” Rom. 12:5. “Now ye are the body of Christ and members in particular.” 1 Cor. 12:27. “For thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God: the Lord thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.” Deut. 7:6. May the Lord help us to be a special holy people unto himself. “The Lord shall establish thee an holy people unto himself, as he hath sworn unto thee, if thou shalt keep the commandments of the Lord thy God, and walk in his ways.” Deut. 28:9. “And they shall call them, the holy people, the redeemed of the Lord: and thou shalt be called, Sought out, a city not forsaken.” Isa. 62:12. “Wherefore holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the apostle and high priest of our profession, Christ Jesus.” Heb. 3:1. I charge you by the Lord, that this epistle be read to all the holy brethren.” 1 Thess. 5:27. “In the body of his flesh through death to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight.” Col. 1:22. All the members which are brethren, are holy, like our elder .brother Jesus. “Became as he is; so, are we in this world.” 1 Jno. 4:17. Praise God! “Thy people shall be all righteous;” holy, just, in accordance with the divine will in life and practice.

GOD CALLS US TO HOLINESS.

“For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.” 1 Thess. 4:7. “Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother.” 1 Cor. 1:1. Paul was called to be an apostle through the will of God. What is the will of God? For this is the will of God even your sanctification, or holiness. 1 Thess. 4:3. “To all that be at Rome, called to be saints [holy ones].” Rom. 1:7. “Who hath saved us, and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.” 2 Tim. 1:9.

GOD COMMANDS HOLINESS.

“For I am the Lord your God: ye shall therefore sanctify youselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: . . . For I am the Lord that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God; ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.” Lev. 11:44, 45. “Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the Lord your God am holy.” Lev. 19:2. “Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the Lord your God.” Lev. 20:7. “But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation. Because it is written, Be ye holy, for I am holy.” 1 Pet 1:15. “Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” 2 Cor. 7:1. God commanded his ancient people to be holy, who were typical of his spiritual Israel; also the new covenant commands us to be holy.

IT IS THE WILL OF GOD THAT WE SHOULD BE HOLY.

“For this is the will of God even your sanctification [holiness]. 1 Thess. 4 3. “Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me) to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first that he may establish the second. By the which will we are sanctified [made holy] through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” Heb. 10:9, 10.

BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD.

“According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.” Eph. 1 4. “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” Ron. 8:28. “For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn of many brethren.” The purpose of God before the foundation of the world was that we should be conformed to the image of his dear Son, which is holiness and righteousness. Eph. 4:24. “And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.” “But we are bound to give thanks always to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth.” 2 Thess. 2:13.

Sanctification: the act of sanctifying, or making holy, by which men’s affections are purified or alienated from sin and the world, and exalted to the supreme love of God. To sanctify or purify. — WEBSTER.

IN THIS WORLD.

That we might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness all the days of our life. Luke 1:74, 75. Not when we come down to die, but all the days of our life. In this world. “I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” Jno. 17:15-17.

WHICH MAKES HIS MEMBERS ALL ONE.

“And I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord; and they shall be my people, and I will be their God: for they shall return unto me with their whole heart.” Jer. 24:7. “And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me forever, for the good of them, and their children.” 32:39. “And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh: and I will give them a heart of flesh: that they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God.” Eze. 11:19, 20. “And when they had prayed the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness. And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and one soul.” Acts 4:31, 32.

Holiness makes the members of God’s church all one.

Why? Because they all have the same Spirit of holiness. “Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; and declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.” Rom. 1:3, 4. The Spirit which declared Jesus to be the Son of God was the Holy Spirit. And that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.” 1 Cor. 12:3. Hence the Holy Ghost is the Spirit of holiness. “The offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified (made holy) by the Holy Ghost.” Rom. 15:16. “All having that one Holy Spirit he imparts the same nature to each member; consequently, they all have the same Spirit, which imparts holiness to each one who receives him; they are all one.

G. R. Achor.

TESTIMONIES.

“Thy Testimonies are Wonderful.” – Psa. 119:129.

__________

Maytown, Ky.

Dear Readers of the Trumpet: I am saved this morning and kept from sin by the power of God; and enjoying better health than I have for five years. I have not had any heart trouble since I wrote to the dear saints to pray for God to heal me. May God bless the dear saints. I enjoy reading the Trumpet. Dear children of God, pray for me. Your brother in the one body,

H. T. Dunagan.

Findlay, O.

Dear Saints: I feel it would be to the glory of God to write my testimony and tell the goodness of God to me. He saved me a little over three years ago, and he keeps me sweetly saved in him. He saved me from tobacco, strong drink, secret society and sectism, for which I give him all the praise, for he sets my soul free. Glory to Jesus! He is my physician for soul and body. Oh praise God for his mighty healing power!

A few days ago I was pulling rods out of an oil well and one of the elevators came unhooked in the derrick and dropped about fifty or sixty feet and struck me on the head, cut a great gash in my head, broke off one of my teeth and made me blind for about five minutes. They brought me to the house and my wife washed the blood off and closed the wound with court plaster and put me to bed. The neighbors wanted to run for a doctor, but my wife said, No, praise God, we have a physician greater than all earthly help. We tried to send a message about thirty- five miles to an elder but we could not reach him, and there are no elders near here; so I said to my wife, Don’t bother any more, I will get along all right. I felt the Lord would heal me when the neighbors would see how bad I was hurt. It had almost broken my neck, as I could not raise my head unless I would lift it with my hands. The iron weight weighed about ten pounds, that hit me. Every body here thought it a great wonder that it did not kill me; but the dear Lord spared my life, and I give him all the glory. Well, that night I suffered all night, and in the morning I felt if I would kneel down beside the bed the Lord would heal me. So I did, and something said to me, Will you tell it if the Lord will heal you? And I said, yes, and then I prayed the prayer of faith and the pain began to move, and then my wife came in with the Bible and had family worship. Then we sang, “Oh Christ, thou art my perfect physician, thy faith now makes me whole;” and glory to God the work was done, the pain all gone. Praise God! and I called for my clothes and went to work. Your brother saved and sanctified,

G. W. Stumpner.

ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS.

_____

Can a woman get salvation and be married to a man that has a living wife?

Certainly a woman can get salvation even though she is married to a man that has another living wife, if she will only seek the Lord with her whole heart, placing her marriage relation all into his hands, subjecting herself absolutely to his will to be guided solely by his direction as to what her duty is, whether separation or any thing else.

Do the ministers among the officiate in marriage ceremonies?

Yes, the law recognizes the ministers of God’s church as possessing the same authority in these matters as it does those of the sects.

How are Sunday schools conducted among you that have Sunday schools? or is it necessary to have them?

Wherever there are enough of the saints’ children it is advisable to have Sunday school: as in every other matters the Lord should lead in every thing, as to whom should superintend, teach classes, etc. No unsaved person should be allowed to teach. The lessons selected should be those that the Lord leads to select as being the most useful: It is best to teach directly from the Bible itself, and as far as possible the children should be provided with Bibles, as lesson leaves, etc. do not impress the child’s mind so much as the source of the lesson. There should be no elections for any office, but let the Lord select whom he will use.

Is it wrong for a man who has lost the love of God out of his heart, to return thanks at the table?

Whether right or wrong depends upon the motives that prompt the offering. If it is carried on as a mere form, with a hypocritical purpose to seem righteous, it is sin. But if any backslider or sinner feels truly grateful enough to thank God for his food, let him do so. It is but reasonable and well pleasing to God.

Is it right for such to talk with and try to persuade sinners to do right? Your sister saved through the blood of Jesus,

L. P.

About the same principles will also apply to this question. If the motives are good and sincere it is all right.

Is it in harmony with the Bible and you saints North for preachers to give recommendations to saints and sinners to carry with them to prove themselves to the people? Is it right to give recommendations to elders when ordaining them? I want the truth in this matter. Your brother toy the grace of God,

R. H. Owens.

We find no scripture authorizing us to give anything like written eredentials to ministers, to carry with them as a proof of their ministerial characters. Nor to saints as a recommend to the people, much less to sinners.

Page 3

It is true the Apostle Paul speaks of “some who need letters of recommendation,” but he said he had no need of such things. And the inference he leaves us is that the parties needing them were unsaved; whereas all who are saved, are themselves “epistles of Christ,” “known and read of all men.” 2 Cor 3:1-3. God’s plan is that his church live in the Spirit, and in possession of the gifts of the Spirit whereby they shall be able to “judge angels,” i. e., professed ministers. So if they go forth pure in heart and sealed of God, they will be recommended by the Spirit of God to all who live “in the light of God.” If God sends a man out he is all right, and if we “walk in the light as God is in the light,” we will see men as God sees them, and indorse whom he indorses, and reject whom he rejects. Therefore to God’s church and ministry on the mountain of God’s holiness, there is positively no need of letters of commendation. God’s church is a wonderful self-adjusting institution. In human bodies they have to take men through a trial and legal process and so take away their license, if they prove unfit for the ministry. But in God’s church the fitness is the license, and its loss at once deposes them. They are only fit to preach when filled with, and sent by the Spirit of God. And losing him out of their hearts they lose at once both their ability and credentials. So in God’s perfect system no imposters can go about deceiving his church.

Whereas if papers are given and depended upon, they can be carried and used to gain access after a person has gone to the devil just the same as if he were approved of God. So all such papers are of more service to hypocrites than anyone else. God has settled it long ago, to give nothing of the kind, except it be a mere line to ticket agents, to assist brethren get rates.

We were requested by three different persons to give certificates of ordination, and all three proved unworthy. One, Geo. P. Wilson of Michigan, has been for years filled with a pernicious spirit, prating against God’s ministers, and yet has the impudence to use the paper long ago ignored.

Dear Family of God: We are happy to report victory in our souls this morning. Since our last report the Lord has given us a successful meeting at Reedsville, O. Bro’s S. Ruffner and S. Yoder were with us and were much used of God in teaching the Word. This meeting was quite a settling time to those who had already accepted the truth, and a few others were justified. One brother had been a Baptist for years and believed in “Baptist succession;’’ viz., that the Baptist church (sect) was founded by John the Baptist or Christ, and has been in existence ever since. He has a Baptist church history which endeavors to prove this. But after hearing the preaching and reading Bro. Schell’s “Biblical Trace of the Church,” he renounced his sect and got down as a sinners and was converted. The Lord gave us a precious farewell meeting last night. The brethren of this vicinity expect to keep up regular meetings. Our next address will be Long Bottom, O. Bro. and Sister Myers expect to be with us soon. Your brethren,

B. F. Roe, L. C. and J. I. Mast.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I am glad to report that I am saved and have the victory in my soul, “and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.” We left the campground July 1 and went to Sears, Mich. and held a three week’s meeting in the name of the Lord. For the first two weeks it seemed like a dark place, but we hung on to God in fasting and prayer, and the powers of darkness began to give way and the

Lord began to save souls. During the last week there were seven consecrations, some for pardon and some for sanctification. On the last Sunday ten followed the Lord in the ordinance of baptism. On Monday evening we had an ordinance service in which twelve took part. Tuesday morning Bro. Sturgis took us five miles to the train and we came to this place. If the Lord wills we expect to go to Johnstown and hold that meeting, and from there to Tekonsha, and then to the St. Louis, Mich, camp- meeting. After that meeting, any one wishing us to hold meetings address us at Grand Junction, Mich. We will be ready to go wherever the Lord leads. Bro. and Sister Merritt are with us in our company, making three of us. We have a large tent 30×50. Your brother saved and kept by the power of God,

Dearly Beloved Brethren: Meeting closed at Muncie, Ind. the 28th with victory. A few souls were saved. Some converted, and others sanctified. The power of God was manifest in every coming together. Some were wonderfuly healed of the Lord. To God be all the glory. There would have been a great deal more good done could we have remained a few weeks and held meetings in different localities. It really appeared that there was the best prospect for salvation work, of any new field I have been in for years. I pray the Lord to send some one who is true and loyal to God, and will use much wisdom in preaching his Word. Four happy saints were buried with Christ in White river and raised to walk in newness of life. We separated from our much beloved Bro. Schell, with whom we have labored since the Junction camp meeting. I and my little daughter Mintie came home. Bro. Schell and Co. went to Casstown, O. where they will begin a tabernacle meeting to night. May God bless them and give them favor with the people and save many precious souls there. May God bless the little church he raised up at Muncie, Ind. and abundantly bless and richly reward the dear ones who so kindly cared for us and administered to our wants while we were among them. Amen. Pray for me. Your humble brother separated to the gospel,

Birkenhead, Eng., July 8, 1895.

To All the Dear Saints, Greeting: God bless all of you and ever keep you filled with his mighty power. Amen.

We are happy to report victory for God. We are now in the above named city with our Gospel Van, and God is blessing our labors. We have preached to more people in the last four weeks than in two years before. Oh it is wonderful, the opportunity we have to get the truth to the dear people, since we got our Van! Souls are getting saved. They come during the day and want to know what they must do to be saved. Others come to fight the truth, but glory be to Jesus, he fights all our battles. We can preach any time in the day, whenever we open down our platform and begin to sing. The people come, and I do believe they would stand all day and all night and hear the Word. We have preached some nights for three hours, then had to excuse ourselves, and close with the crowd still standing there.

We are praying God to send some holy helper in the great battle. We need some one who is willing to stand the blunt of the battle. For since we have launched out in this public way, it stirs all the devils in the bottomless pit, and they are coming up with all their forces. We will need tracts by the thousands. Especially such as pertain to the Millennium, and the New Jerusalem. We can give out 2000 tracts every week to a good advantage, such as treat on salvation, the church, and Babylon. The millennium devil is terrible here. About one half dozen different beliefs.

We are expecting to have a camp meeting some time in August.

This leaves us all very well in body. Praise God! In much holy love to you all. Your brother in Christ,

J. H. Rupert and Co.

No. 2 Jolliffe St., Liverpool, Eng.

Dear Saints, our newly revised and enlarged work on the Millenium, New Jerusalem, etc., is just what is needed for the deceived masses in England. A few thousand of them would no doubt be the means of saving hundreds of souls. We believe the Spirit of God is moving us to appeal to all the saints to send donations to the Trumpet Office to pay for a large shipment of those books as soon as printed and bound; with other tracts. Please send your offerings.

Barkevville, Pa., July 31, 1895.

Dear Trumpet Readers: We are able through the grace of God to report complete victory. The meeting at Clintonville, Pa., was a victory on the side of truth. The enemy tried to compromise on some Bible Union doctrine, but glory to Jesus, the Spirit of God lifted up the standard and the sect preachers were defeated. The meeting in our or chard was a glorious feast of the Spirit from the beginning to the dose. God was truly present to heal and deliver those oppressed with the devil, and to save sinners and sanctify believers. There were two healed and five consecrations. The dear Lord sent Bro. and Sister Moore from Edgewood, Mich., to assist in the meeting and the Lord wonderfully used them in singing the gospel. Bro. Latshaw and Bro. Gadsby were used by the Lord in preaching the Word, and Bro. Wm. Davis from Frankfort, Mich. gave us valuable help in preparing the ground. The congregations were large and orderly with the exception of two drunk men one night; and I must say that my neighbors showed themselves to be in favor of good order and listened very attentively to the word of God. The interest is such that I believe it would be to the glory of God for the brethren from the Emlenton camp to arrange to hold a few meetings at this place after the close of the camp meeting. The Lord willing, Bro. and Sister Moore and I intend to start to day for Rimersburg, Clarion Co., Pa., to open up the work of the Lord in that place. We ask all the saints to pray for us. Yours in the one body,

C.W. Koonce,

Dwight, Mich., July 27, 1895.

Dearly Beloved Saints of the Most High God, Greeting: My companion, Sister Della Gardner, Bro. Clarence Levy and myself came to Howard City, Mich., July 20, and held meeting in a hall until the 25th. Dear Bro. and Sister Soules having moved to this place constituted an opening for the gospel here. We opened up first on the streets, and had many hearers; and each evening before going to the hall we sang the people together and gave them some gospel, both by preaching and tracts. The Spirit of God wrought with us, and soon souls came to the altar. We occupied the hall afternoon and night. There were a number of consecrations. Some received pardon, others sanctification; and several were healed of various afflictions. Twice, we went to the river and the ordinance of baptism was administered; seven in all obeyed the Savior in this holy command. The last night we also had a precious and very sacred ordinance service. All present seemed to feel very solemn. After following the example and commands of Christ in washing one another’s feet, and commemorating his death, one lady came, with a contrite heart, to the altar and called on God for mercy.

We believe the Lord has, even in this brief effort, planted his church in that place; but how they do need some one to continue to hunt and fish souls there for God, and to feed the little ones who have made the start! It

would indeed be a great blessing could this fruitful visit be followed by more prolonged labors. The prospect is very good. There are hungry and honest souls there, and all they need is to hear the Word until thoroughly convicted to obey. We left some quite well convinced of the truth, and we humbly hope they will cleave to the word of God, and obey the “voice from heaven,” which says, “Come out of her, my people.” Who will go in the Spirit of God to Howard City, and labor a month or more, and see a good harvest of souls? God bless the little company there as they meet in their weekly meetings. Pray for them.

Yesterday our little company, having been kindly favored with half rates by the Grand Rapids and Indiana R. R., came from. Ho ward City to Boyne Falls, where we were met and conveyed by the saints about twenty miles to the camp ground at this place. Arrived late last night.

Let all who read this offer up an earnest prayer to God for the salvation of many souls in these northern meetings. Amen.

Anderson, S. C.

To all the Saints, Greeting: We are glad that we can report victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Though we have not reported through the paper for a long time yet we have been busily engaged in the work of the Lord. We came to Augusta, Ga. on the 7th of March, and spent several weeks in the city. But little fruit appeared except among the colored people. The time was spent in drawing the line between saints and sinners. But few are saints. Surely this city is a sister to Sodom. If this is not a city of confusion it would be hard to find one. Nearly every one thinks he has found the church and stands aloof from all others. May the few who are there in the kingdom of God be faithful and true to their covenant with God.

From Augusta we made a trip westward through the country stopping at Blythe, twenty-three or twenty-four miles distant. Here we found a few saints. At this place like others along our line in Ga. some errors had crept in, among which was promiscuous greeting, which had almost accomplished the end designed by the enemy: but we are glad to say that all concerned renounced this and returned to the Bible way of decency and order. After about a week at this place we went to Edgehill twenty- three miles farther, stopping one night at Avera, on the way. At this place we found some professing to be saints still in bondage to Masonry. We arrived on Saturday and the announcement had been made that an elder would be ordained, whom we found to be an officer in a Masonic lodge. Both the party to be ordained and the party expecting to do the work did not discern the body of Christ, the church, hence the whole thing was simply another sect movement. We labored with the parties to get them right, and hope they will yet reach clearness in this matter. May God help them to go down to an utter death to self. The idea prevailed here that if people but came out of sectism they were in the church. Supposing that all who came out of sectism composed the one body. The sect spirit prevailed to such an extent that one party who had been cut off got restored to one local body without claiming fellowship with those at other points. The work at this point so far is still Babylon repeated. We pray God to send help to this place as his wisdom dictates.

From Edgehill we went to Bastonville. We found several saints at this place. We are glad to say the most of them are moving forward. May God keep them humble, always walking in the light of God. From here we went to Avera and continued one week. Some at this place would not give up Masonry, consequently have gone back into darkness. May God have mercy on them and help them to yet renounce the dark murderous spirit of Masonry and escape her soul-damning delusions. From here we went to Beall Springs where we heard the Baptist preacher tell his people that they could go to gambling hells and places of vice and infamy and still go to heaven if their names were on the church records. The preacher said he knew by experience they would go to such places. Had he said that members of his sect would go to such places and be honored members we would have responded, yes. But to say that God’s people will and do go to such places is a base slander on the Son of God. But such is some of the abominable sect religion of the South. They say all sin, and that the sinners who join church will go to heaven and those who do not will be lost. Preachers and members, we were informed, think it all right in the sight of God to chew tobacco, dip snuff, drink beer and whiskey. In fact almost any thing that any other sinners can do. The standard could not be lowered here. No wonder they teach they can never fall; there is no place to fall to.

From here we went to Johnson’s, near Warrenton. Mr. C. F. Johnson who makes no profession took us to his house and kept us four weeks, and may God reward him and help him to give his heart to God. At this place we found a number professing holiness, who belonged to the folds of sectism, but with one or two exceptions they positively refused to hear the Word. These poor deluded souls imagine they are sanctified and still wedded to their human creed. Our earnest prayer to God is to open their eyes to Satan’s lie. Nearly all the people in this community see the deception of sectism as well as its corruption. We believe that no more souls will be deceived thereby in this locality. May God help the people to renounce her and all other works of the devil, and give their hearts and lives to God and obey his precious word. From here we returned to Bastonville, remained at few days and then returned to Blythe and then to Augusta, having been gone eleven or twelve weeks. A few souls were saved and the saints advanced and much error exposee. We trust a harvest of souls will be gathered along this line in the near future. We are now at Anderson, S. C. ready for the battle. We ask all the dear saints of God to remember us in much earnest prayer. In the love and fellowship of Jesus,

J. F. Lundy and Co.

PORTER. — Mary A. Shellenbarger, was born Apr. 19, 1837. She was married to Wm. J. Porter, in 1856. To them were born fifteen children; four of them died in infancy, and eleven survive her. Mrs. Porter has been a patient sufferer for several years and died quite suddenly, Aug. 1, 1895; aged fifty-eight years, three months and twelve days. May God bless her dear family and bring all into the fold before too late. Amen! Funeral services by the writer. Your humble brother saved in Jesus. Pray for me.

J. N. Howard.

Read at the funeral of Sister Mary A. Porter, near Wauseon, O., Aug. 2, 1895.

This is the work of’ God’s own hand,
That’s telling to us all,
We’re on probation in this land,
And must go at his call.

God has took our sister away
To her eternal home;
And while we weep, we all can say,
O God! thy will be done.

The feeble tenement of clay,
In which her soul did dwell,
Is present with us here to-day;
With her we hope ’tis well.

Yes mother’s gone, her soul has fled,
Returning to her God;
Her body numbered with the dead,
Soon will sleep beneath the sod.

To one and all, oh! let me say,
Get ready for the Judgment day;
And when the world before Him stand,
You’ll be with those at His right hand.

And now, oh God, we look to Thee,
For help in this our time of need;
Oh comfort these sad hearts to-day.
And give them grace, we humbly plead.

THE WONDERFUL PHYSICIAN.

_____

The topic is the key note of all which the holy Scriptures teach us of Christ as the great Physician pur Healer. “He healed ALL that were sick; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet saying, Himself took our infirmities and bare our sicknesses.” Mat. 8:16, 17. This quotation from Isa. 53:4 shows that it is absolute bodily pain and disease which he bore upon the cross for us as well as our sins. We read, “The Lord hath laid on him the Iniquity of us all.” Isa. 53:6. And just as surely as he wills that his word shall be fulfilled in our souls, so surely does he will that it shall be fulfilled in our bodies also.

He has provided a perfect redemption from the effects of the fall for our entire being; it is ours to appropriate it to ourselves. When he was here on earth no sinner or sick man or woman came to him in vain. He healed and forgave, not out of caprice, but that his word might be fulfilled. In the special passage in the Old Testament which names God, “Jehovah thy Physician,” God attaches a condition to healing, — “if thou wilt diligently hearken,” etc. “I am the Lord that healeth thee [or Jehovah thy Physician.]” Ex. 15:26 The same conditions are repeated. Ex. 23:20-25. Deut. 7:12-15. And on the other hand, Lev. 26:14-16. Deut. 28:15, 21, 22, 27, 28, 35, 58, 61, — for such as do not hearken; and this is confirmed in the New Testament 1 Cor. 11:30-32, — “For this cause many are sick and weakly among you, and many sleep.”

It is on this ground of Christ’s redemption that the apostle James founds his exhortation to the sick members of the church, — “Is any among you sick? let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up, and if he have committed sins they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to another and pray one for another that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” James 5:14-16.

Oh dear saints, we have been too long looking to other means for our healing, taking for granted that which is certainly not expressed in scripture, that the healing of the sick and the exhortation of James were for the apostolic times and not for our own day. And some who have awakened up to the fact that Jesus Christ the Savior and Jesus Christ the Physician is the same yesterday, to-day and forever, and who recognize that the gifts and calling of God are without repentance, yet stand in the place of the leper in this chapter: they say, “Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.” “If thou wilt” — how can he will other than the fulfillment of his word? “I will” he says, “be thou clean.” “But,” say many, “I have prayed for years that I may be healed, and yet it does not please God to answer my prayers.” Let us seek solemnly in the light of God to investigate the cause. First, for what purpose do you desire and pray for your healing? Is it that you may enjoy the use of your powers? or is it that you may carry out the will of God? Do you want to be healed for your sake or for Christ’s sake? Is it the healing in itself, the end of your purpose to yourself, or do you expect it only from the compassion of God who does not like to see his children suffer? You under-estimate his compassion. He stands ever ready to give far beyond what we ask for; he sees the whole situation, the end from the beginning. We see from references which we have given, as well as from Job 33:14-33, that God’s aim is not merely or even primarily to heal the body, but to bring forth the man’s righteousness with God to enrich his whole being by bringing all into harmony with Himself. When he draws us so near even by sickness, it is to speak to us and help us. If he could gain our ear and lead us to judge ourselves in the light of God’s word without employing sickness, we should not be judged and he could take away our sickness from us. (1 Cor. 11:31. Ex. 15:26.) Therefore in seeking healing, let us unite ourselves with God’s divine thought of healing our whole soul and body, and let us seek it not as a favor from God to us individually, but for the fulfilling of his word. Let us seek to know all that his word says about it; then although neither our past experience nor the opinions of other Christians, coincide with our deductions, “let God be true and every man a liar.” When we stand on the firm ground of his word, we can leave with him the responsibility of justifying, by facts, all which he has therein declared, for the scripture cannot be broken. John 10:35.

There are various hindrances to healing: the lack of an open ear, Ex. 15:26; expectation from other means, John 5:4; unbelief, Mat. 13:58; failure to accept it and give praise to Jesus our healer; and too very often a want of quietness and rest of soul which would keep his child dependant on him if restored to health. But he who is the Lord thy healer is equal to deal with every hindrance, and does not call us to be occupied with them. In the case of the centurian’s servant there is much to be learned. From Luke 7:3 we find that this Roman was so different that not liking to venture, Gentile as he was, into the presence of the great Jewish prophet, he sends the elders of the Jews to Jesus to request him to come and heal his servant. Later he seems to repent of having asked so much at Jesus’ hands, and sends his friends (verse 6) saying, “Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldst enter under my roof: . . . but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.” He is a Gentile who has had no scriptural Instruction, and yet his faith is in the word of Jesus so strong that he does not even require him to come in contact with his servant. He believes that just as he himself said to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to his servant, Do this, and he doeth it; so He to whom all things in heaven and earth are subject has but to command, whether near or far, and the sickness which is subject to his sway MUST depart.

Let us have like faith. Let us look away from probable or improbable, away from past experiences or present hindrances, and let us regard only what the Lord has said, and everything which the Lord has said let us boldly claim. Shall we not honor God by claiming the fulfillment of his word, and by simply following his directions in Jas. 5:14, 15? Shall we not accept the unspeakable privilege of being under the Lord’s shepherd care, and sing with David, “Bless the Lord oh my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name . . . . who forgiveth all thine iniquities, who healeth all thy diseases?” Psa. 103:1-3. Shall we not in childlike confidence commit ourselves to Him who alone can teach us the meaning of his dealings with us, and whose power as well as love is infinite? So doing, there is no ground for the caviling of infidels that we, who are believers and saints of the Most High, pass over these passages of God’s word which claim our faith in him, and which touch us most closely in our daily experience. How should a rationalist believe that our sense of pardon is anything more than imaginary when he sees promises of healing to be received by the same principle of faith as that by which we are pardoned, and we say we have the one and he sees we have not the other? Has he not a right to say, “These people are deluded; whenever their faith touches anything it fails?”

The Lord manifests great joy in the centurian’s faith, and says, “Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And I say unto you, that many shall come from the East and from the West, and shall sit down with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Mat. 8:10- 12. Faith will be found and its reward be given where men expect it least. He said to the centurian, “Go thy way; as thou hast believed so be it unto thee.” Now to believe is to deal directly with God and so to hearken to his voice. It is simply counting upon him and resting a thing over upon him, letting it go out of your own hands into his, in the fullest assurance that he has undertaken it. We cannot be anxious about anything while we really believe. Jesus says, “Whatsoever things ye desire when ye pray, believe that ye receive them and ye shall have them.” There is no need to repeat a request for that which we have received by faith. If we are reckoning upon God we cannot but thank him for it even though we do not see it with our eyes. We know God cannot fail us.

Passing on from the centurian Jesus came into Peter’s house and saw his wife’s mother lying sick with a fever. And he touched her hand and the fever left her, and she arose and ministered unto them, A simple case, but oh how full! No unbelief to hinder; and the presence of Jesus and his touch drove away fever, and the healed body took its right place at once without any interval of convalescence, and ministered to Jesus and to his disciples. It was a day of healing. “And when the even was come they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils; and he cast out the spirits with his word.” The great power lay in his word. Jesus the same yesterday and to-day and forever. “Healed all that were sick; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities and bare our sicknesses [or diseases].”

How precious the privilege, that his word might be fulfilled in us, and that we Christians might be witnesses to the world that the great Physician heals now as much as ever, those who come unreservedly to him, yielding up their bodies unto him to be instruments whose only use shall be to glorify him and do his pleasure! Oh let us be glad that we have no right to retain sickness or to seek healing for ourselves. We live to glorify God in our bodies and spirits which are his. Oh let us all as saints never dishonor our King by limiting his power, but always and for all cases call upon the great Physician who never lost a case.

TESTIMONY.

Meriden, Kan.

Dear Children of God: The Spirit of God moves me to give my testimony of the saving grace of God. Eight years ago the Lord showed me through the preaching of the Word that we might be filled with the Spirit; that every disciple of Christ should have his pentecost — be baptized with the Holy Ghost. This seemed to me exceedingly wonderful and more precious than thousands of gold and and silver. Never in all my imaginations had I pictured a life so blessed as that which now lay before me revealed by the word of God and the Spirit, — to be so thoroughly consecrated to God that not the slightest self-will or self-desire might make the least division between myself and my Lord. I comprehended for the first time that all that was good of me was from God and all that was the opposite was of myself. Therefore I cried mightily to God to kill me all out and fill me with himself; that indeed it might be “none of self and all of Thee.” Then began the consecration of all to God; one thing after another was presented to my mind and for several days my mind and heart were busy in presenting the sacrifice. After returning from services and from the altar, the Lord showed me I had still a little desire in the way the experience should come; so I yielded that, saying, “Surely thou knowest what will glorify thee.” Then I realized I had done all I could and the rest belonged to God. Then how graciously did he carry forward the blessed work in my soul!

After a sweet sleep of several hours I awoke in great spiritual darkness, so great and so real that my husband was awakened with the request to pray earnestly. The thought came that perhaps I was mistaken and had never been converted and was rejected by God. But looking up to him I cried out, “Oh my Lord, surely my sins are all forgiven, and thou dost not remember them against me any more; oh show me what meaneth this darkness.” Then came these words, “I with Christ am crucified,” and a consciousness that my prayer was being answered and God was indeed killing me out that he might fill me with perfect resignation to his own dear will. Then the Spirit presented a deeper consecration; item after item faster than mind could think them: “I never will spend another hour in reading anything that will not help me spiritually; I never will spend another hour in fancy work; I never will spend my time in trimming my clothes; I never will put on my children what I would not wear myself. If the Lord calls me to teach the gospel I’ll gladly do it. If he calls me to go to India to teach it, I’ll go in his strength. If he calls me to go and my dear husband will not go, I’ll go any way (meaning separation from dearest friends to do God’s will). And I’ll never add cent to cent or dollar to dollar to lay up treasures here in this world, but use it to the glory of God.” Then my baby cried, and immediately I began to care for it and this promise was given: The Lord is more willing to give the Spirit to them that ask than we are to give good things to our children. Then I must believe that he gives me the Holy Ghost now, and my faith grasped the promise and the Spirit came upon me and I knew I was sealed by that Spirit of promise. The kingdom of God was given me which is righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost. So my soul was filled with the joy of the Lord. The Lord gave me a beautiful vision of the starry firmament, glowing in spiritual beauty. Then a mountain all dark upon the sides, but over the top came a stream of glory and rested upon my soul filling me with joy unspeakable and full of glory (Mount Calvary where Christ shed his blood that we might be saved). And a voice said, “This is the way, walk ye in it.” The way of holiness with the glory of God upon us. Oh bless the Lord for his great salvation!

Sometimes I have wondered if telling my experience would not discourage those who have not had so emotional an experience, but it came so clear to me to-day that it was given to me for his glory and I could tell it for the same. If all the unbelief of the world came against this experience and doubted that God does save souls with such a wonderful salvation, I could never doubt what God has done for me. There is one exhortation to God’s dear children: let the Spirit reveal the depths of salvation to your souls, the excellency of our Lord and the glory of the kingdom of God. May I warn you of more zeal than real spirituality in the work of God.

Last winter the Lord gave me such a beautiful vision and there is such a glorious experience in it that my soul longs for each of you to enjoy it with me. I saw myself in company with a dear sister beside a beautiful river that flowed through a magnificent and glorious building (the church of God). The sister was clothed in a beautiful white robe and was enjoying the river, plunging in and bringing up new beauties and so enraptured that my soul was moved to explore the vast building with all it contained. So I wandered to and fro, filled with inexpressible joy. Soon I came to a stairway very long, could hardly see the bottom, but from below came intelligence that many were enjoying themselves more fully than I was in feasting and in sweet intercourse and fellowship with each other. A great longing filled my soul with a desire to descend the stairway, but I was detained by the thought of the effort that was needed and the great weariness that would follow. Presently some one came forward, offered me his hand, and oh how blessed! How restful and with what sweet comfort was the descent made! But there in the downward journey my vision closed, and when I awoke my soul cried out, “Oh yes Lord, take me to the very depths of humility that I may learn of thee its preciousness in sweet companionship. ”

Jesus is all we take him for by faith, so together the downward steps are taken as they are seen by faith, revealed by his Spirit. The last few days the glory of God floods my soul, and deep gratitude to God encourages me to relate a little experience with Babylon, that we may rejoice in the love of God for deliverance therefrom. In company with my mother an International Holiness camp meeting at Topeka was visited, as I felt sure the Lord would have me scatter some tracts on the subject of the church. The evening service was held in the usual manner of denominational meetings. The morning service consisted in a Bible lesson on holiness, speaking some on the glory bestowed on the children of God. Then an invitation was given to sinners to seek the Lord, and one went forward. Then for those desiring sanctification; several went forward. Then those who had the experience but lacked the glory, and most of the professors went forward. Then those who needed from God in different ways; so most of the congregation were forward for prayers and many were offered in an intensely supplicating manner without an effort to believe for what they asked. My soul was stirred within me and at the first opportunity I arose to witness for the true and living God. As the effort was made the anointing was given and wave after wave of glory flooded my soul and a living testimony was given to a free and full salvation. It was well received, and after the service many came to speak with me, acknowledging their deficiency and desiring help. The tracts were handed out and received eagerly and I marveled at the greatness of the opportunity given. Even the presiding preachers receiving the “Church of God” tract.

In praying with an afflicted sister we were detained till quite late for afternoon service. On arriving on the ground was met by my brother who told me the preachers were making strong opposition to my tracts and considered I had no right to scatter them without their consent. I told him what I had done was before them and they had not objected; that if it was the Lord’s work they were not the head of it, and I had done what the Lord directed me to do. As it was my train time I left the meeting, leaving all results in God’s hands. I learned afterward that they talked of arresting me, as they claimed I had done contrary to the law. The comeouters there thought they could gladly pay the fine for me if it was necessary. It served to draw the line between the denominational people and those who had come out. The leading preacher said they wanted it distinctly understood that they were not responsible for the tracts distributed, that they were contrary to their teaching and I had made myself liable to a heavy fine by the distribution. Then he said, “Now brothers and sisters, from now on beware of this people; have nothing to do with them.” Some one said, “Oh, but she gave in such a glorious testimony!” “Oh yes,” the preacher said, “they can do that — why my brothers and sisters, they can give in a much better testimony than you can, but you know they come as angels of light.” But I am sure all did not believe him, and it will work for the spread of the truth and for the good of my dear ones for whom God is moving mountians.

May we all rejoice more freely over our deliverance from the bondage of sectism, and trust God for greater victory wherever we may be called to labor. Pray for me in my labor in this dark place of rebellion. Yours in Jesus,

Jennie C. Rutty.
