THE KINGDOM.

_____

There has been a promise given,
Down the many ages past,
Of the coming of a Kingdom
That forever more should last.

In the distant land of Judea
When the blessed Savior came,
He as King set up this Kingdom
And over it will ever reign.

He now holds a royal scepter,
Righteousness engraved thereon;
This our God will over honor,
It is held by his dear Son.

You ask what constitutes this Kingdom,
Truly ’tis not of this world,
It with all it’s earthly wisdom
Has not yet to mankind told.

It cometh not by observation
As the earthly powers we see,
Not by men nor men’s creation,
But within it is to be.

Those who enter God’s great Kingdom,
First to him must all give o’er,
Then all who to him are faithful
Reign with him forever more.

Allelujah, King of nations,
Let us songs unto him raise,
Glorious song of full salvation,
Blessings, Glory! Honor! Praise!

To us who look for the personal coming of our Savior to earth, this counsel is something more than an idle tale. To us it is real, a solemn promise from one whose word has never failed. “I will come again.” What plainer language could our Savior have used? That blessed promise, made eighteen hundred years ago, still has power to comfort us as it did the sorrowing diciples, and to us who are living in these days when men’s hearts are failing them for fear of what is coming on the earth, they have a significance that cannot be overlooked. The signs that were to precede his coming, are plainly seen, and when we see these things we are to know he is near, even at the door. His own are expected to be in a waiting attitude, looking for and expecting his return. We are told to watch, for in such an hour as we think not he will come. “I go to prepare a place for you” were some of his words to those he was leaving, but he adds to comfort them, “I will come again,” and I believe it because God has revealed it to me by his Spirit. God says in his word, his Spirit will search out the deep things of God and reveal them to us. When God calls us to work in his vineyard and gives us talents, we must obey. We will be happier here and in the world to come, for on the improvement of this short life depends a never-ending eternity. O I know that this light that God has let shine in my heart will take me through the solemn hour of death if I am faithful. “Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.” — 1 Cor. 12:1. “Now there are diversities of gifts but the same spirit. And there are differences of ad ministrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operation, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; to another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: but all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.” 1 Cor. 12:4-11. I know all true followers will believe these teachings of the Great Shepherd, for he has said, “My sheep hear my voice.” “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved, and he that believeth not shall be damned,” which means to believe in the Son of God.

A CITIZEN AND A MOVER.

PART III.

C. Praise the Lord, Mover! How goes the battle with you now?

M. I confess the last conversation did shake me a little; but I am pretty solid again.

C. I am so glad you became conscious of your shaky condition, and are willing to acknowledge it, which is clear proof of your unscriptural position. See Heb. 12:26-28. So everything that cannot be shaken will remain. Lord Jesus, continue the shaking. Amen!

M. But I don’t think your illustration respecting the journey of the Israelites is a fair one.

C. The Lord bless your soul, that is not my illustration, but God’s; see Heb. ch’s 3 and 4, and then fight it out with God, or be still more sensible and submit yourself therefore unto God.

M. Now come and let us reason together. Don’t you know the Bible says one Lord, one faith, one baptism, etc? Eph. 4: 5. If that be true, two works of grace would involve two Lords, two faiths, two baptisms, etc. Such rotten doctrine! I cannot accept it.

C. Poor soul! that is a man of straw of your own make. But maybe your poor weak Lord cannot save by two works; but the Lord of glory, the author of our salvation saves us by the washing of regeneration (one work), and the renewing of the Holy Ghost (second work). I tell you our Lord is a mighty Lord; he can preform two works of grace; and he does not require two kinds of faith, but two definite acts of faith. See Rom. 5:1, 2. We may exercise faith for regeneration, again for sanctification, again for the healing of the body (for ourselves or for others), also for the casting out of devils, etc. Yet but one faith and that is “the faith of him” (Christ). Now in reference to the one baptism, that is water-baptism, and translated into English would be one dip, or immersion (not 2 or 3).

M. I always thought that was Spirit-baptism.

C. I do not see why you thought that, unless you got it from old Babylon whims, for I am sure the Bible nowhere says so, more than that, if it were the Spirit-baptism, and there were only one dip of it, there would be no redemption for a baskslider, and all your prayers for a re-baptism, a fresh baptism, out-pouring of the Spirit, returning of the Spirit, etc., would be of no avail. And this, none who know of the dealings of God will admit. But I ask,“Have you received the Holy Ghost since you believed?”

M. No, when I believed.

C. Your answer is Babylon, not Bible. You say, “when you believed,” the Bible says, “since ye believed.” I believe the Bible. You read Acts 19:1-6.

M. Oh, I have read that several times; but they were not born of God when baptized unto John’s baptism.

C. This we do not believe; but suppose we admit it. Were they not born of God before they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus? Answer yes or no.

M. No.

C. Well then, these sinners were baptized twice and were still sinners. Baptizing sinners only wets them. Do you call that Bible baptism? “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved.” Baptism is the answer of a good conscience (sinners’ consciences are defiled) toward God. 1 Pet. 3:21.

M. Oh, I recant. I do believe now they were born of God before they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

C. Very well then, we have baptism and laying on of hands between the new birth and the baptism of the Holy Ghost; now if new birth and Holy Ghost baptism were inseparable, neither Paul nor Peter, nor any one else could separate them by baptism and laying on of hands. So if salvation were obtained by only one work of grace, you would not find an example of baptism and laying on of lands, between the washing of regeneration and the renewing of the Holy Ghost. That teaches two works of grace plain enough.

M. Yes, but what is the difference between the spiritual birth and the baptism of the Spirit?

C. The former is the production or offspring (that which is begotten) of the Holy Spirit. The latter is the reception of the begetter (Holy Spirit) himself. The former is a work or operation of the Spirit. The latter is the incoming of the operator (Holy Spirit).

M. Where then does the second work come in?

C. In the renewing, or cleansing done by the Holy Spirit when he comes in as the abiding Comforter. But I ask, what conditions are to be met in order to obtain sanctification?

M. I do not know of any: but suppose repentance and faith in Christ are all.

C. Are those all the conditions you ever met?

M. All I recollect of.

C. Did you ask God to sanctify you when you repented of your sins?

M. I don’t believe I did.

C. Did you believe for more than you asked for?

M. I guess not.

C. Then you did not believe for sanctification, hence never met a single condition for sanctification. That is exactly the experience of every one-work-of-grace teacher. Never met a Bible condition, hence all your profession of sanctification is a farce. Nothing but hypocrisy. How would a person know when he was sanctified unless it was based on conditions? Again, how would a person know when he was in a proper condition to be sanctified unless conditions were laid down in the word? And again, if conditions are laid down in the word, can any one be sanctified unless they fully meet those conditions?

M. Certainly not, but if there are any conditions I wish you would show them to me in the word.

C. There are many of them; for Christ says, Sanctify them through thy truth, thy word is truth. And Paul says, Sanctify them with the washing of water by the word.

First, a person must be a child of God before he can be sanctified. See Jno. 14:15-17. If ye love me [a sinner cannot love him and still be a sinner] keep my commandments [this sinners cannot do]. And I will pray the Father and he shall give you another Comforter [a sinner has none], that he may abide with you forever, even the Spirit of truth whom the world [sinners] cannot receive. [“Ye are not of the world even as I am not of the world; sanctify them through thy truth, thy word is truth,” Christ’s prayer refered to in the above text] because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him, but ye [children of God] know him, for he dwelleth with you and shall be in you.” And it was so. See Acts 2:1-4. The above is a fact clearly proved in connection with every New Testament sanctification. And still more, there is not one example in all the. New Testament of God ever sanctifying one sinner. But many examples of his sanctifying believers. I challenge the world to refute either of these two statements. Sinners have no inheritance in God’s kingdom. See Gal. 5:21; 1 Cor. 6:9, 10, and Eph. 5:5. But God’s children are all heirs. See Rom. 8:17; Gal. 3:29; 1 Thess. 4:1—3; Acts 20:32. Holiness is their present inheritance. Hab. 17.

Second. Consecration is necessary. See 1 Cor. 6:19, 20; Acts 4:32; Rom. 12:1, 2; Heb. 4:10. Consecration involves crucifixion. Gal. 2:20; Rom. 6:6; Heb. 13:13. God has promised sanctification; hence, seek for it, ask for it and lastly believe for it. Hence faith is also a condition. See Acts 26:18. But in connection with faith, hands were laid on in a number of instances. See Acts 8:16; 9:17, and 19:6, Now if any one teaches an unconditional sanctification, he is an antichrist in doctrine and in life, and is a stranger to Bible sanctification.

Furthermore, I have never met a person that professes to have gotten sanctified when converted, that processed it immediately after his conversion, in most cases not until years had elapsed; and not then until after having come in contact with and inbibed the damnable heresy from some apostate one-work teacher. May God pity the erring ones, and forgive sinners, and sanctify believers, and move forward this great salvation work.

Now one suggestion more to the Mover, and it is this: you had better move down to the altar and get pardoned for your waywardness and wrong doctrine; then get sanctified, and established in this grace. Then all the powers of hell will not move you again. Amen.

Your wholly sanctified brother,

Geo. L. Cole.

OBEY THE WORD.

_____

Dear Saints: May God bless you all and ever keep you in the love of Jesus. To day finds me still saved and rejoicing in a Savior’s love. Praise the dear Lord for this wonderful salvation so rich and free. But as I am penning these lines, and rejoicing that I have found the hidden treasure, my heart is made sad for some of my own sex in this sin-cursed world. I have been talking with some women in this neighborhood about the salvation of their souls and nearly all of them would give the same answer. One will say, “My husband opposes me. I feel the need of salvation and would make the start, but I would not get to go to meeting, for my husband does not believe in going to meeting and I have to obey my husband;” and so they are both traveling the downward road to hell. Another one will say, “When I do go to meeting, sometimes I feel like getting up and talking, but my husband does not believe in women talking in meeting, and so I must obey my husband,” — both traveling the downward road. Another will say, “I want salvation and would accept it but it would cause trouble in our family. My husband would not allow me to live a Christian life, and my children would oppose me; and I will give up Jesus to have peace with my family.” Crying peace, peace, when there is no peace. Oh, the blindness and darkness that is hanging over the people to day! And every one that is traveling the road to hell is taking some one with them.

I am sorry to see some of the saints of the Most High fallen into this delusion with the world and seeking to please man rather than to obey God. If my husband opposes my going to meeting I must obey husband; I must not do anything that would cause division in my family. Now this is a trick of the devil and he is just as cunning and crafty as he ever was. After he deceived Eve his work was not complete until she gave to the man to eat and they both fell; and in the 5th chapter of the Acts we see some more of the devil’s work. The wife agreed with her husband to tempt the Spirit of the Lord and she fell with her husband, and so it is to day: many are tempting the Spirit of the Lord and are growing cold; they do not have the real fire of God in their souls, and it will result in a spiritual death if they do not wake up in obedience to God’s word. O beloved, it does mean so much to have an eye single to the glory of God. Salvation consists not only in getting saved but in keeping saved, and how do we keep saved? By living in obedience to God’s word. How much of God’s word do we have to obey. “But he [Jesus] answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” See Matt. 4:4; Deut. 8:3. These scriptures show that we must live by the whole word of God, not to lay down one commandment to make peace with the unbeliever, “Think not that I [Jesus] am come to send peace on earth. I came not to send peace, but a sword.” Matt. 10:34. “Supppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, nay; but rather division.” Where does this division come? It is not among sinners. It is not in the church. See 1 Cor. 12:25. “That there should be no schism [or division] in the body,” which is the church. Well there is no division among saints and no division among sinners. It is between saint and sinner, one walking in the light and one in darkness. One seeking after heaven and heavenly things and one seeking after earth and earthly things; and where we see man and wife, one a servant of the Lord Jesus and one a servant of the devil, there is this division. They are going in opposite directions, one traveling heavenward and the other traveling hellward.

Dear saints, do not compromise with the devil by seeking to make peace where Jesus says division. Keep your eye upon the Morning- star. Search the word to know what God’s will is concerning his saints and take the cross, the precious cross. Victory was won at the cross. “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed.” O praise God for his word, in which we find so much food for the soul. But if we are disobedient to his word, we will soon find ourselves lean in the soul, and would rather talk of things of this world and most anything else than to talk of Jesus. Dear saints, if we would feast at this great supper we must continue in the word. The devil does not care how much you profess to be a Christian, the devil is a professor too; so we are not known by our profession, but by obedience to the word.

We say we will walk tomorrow,
The path we refuse to day;
And still with our lukewarm sorrow,
We shrink from the narrow way.
But in vain we have hoped and striven;
Our gains have proved but loss,
For the royal way to heaven
Is the royal way of the cross.

DIVINE HEALING
—OF—
SOUL AND BODY.

A New Book,
—by—
E. E. BYRUM.

_____

This book is just fresh from the author’s pen, and a glance at the contents is enough to convince any one of its interest and value to those seeking a more thorough khowledge of the Divine Being, and his dealings with people at the present time, as well as in days past.

The first part of the book very plainly marks out the way from sin unto full salvation, according to the teaching of the sacred word.

It presents the gospel truth in such a way as to throw a gleam of light into the pathway of the sinner, and enable him to see that there is hope beyond, through the mercies of a blessed Redeemer.

The BELIEVER is led to see the beauties of full salvation, and the joys in a life of Christian perfection.

THE HEALING OF THE BODY

constitutes the second part of the book. This consists of twenty-six chapters on doctrinal subjects, exposing and overthrowing false ideas and theories concerning the healing power in these last days, showing when, how, and under what circumstances and conditions God heals the sick and afflicted at the present time.

It gives a history and testimonies of healing from the time of Abraham, through the different ages, up to the present time.

The third part of the book consists of the

WITNESSES OF TO DAY.

These are wonderful testimonies of persons who have been healed within the last few years by divine power; such as being instantly restored to sight after having been blind for years; the lame throw away their crutches; broken bones are instantly healed; invalids who have suffered for years immediately arise and walk, after the prayer of faith is offered, etc. The author is personally acquainted, with nearly all the parties who have herein given their testimonies, and gives their names and addresses in the book, so that persons doubting the truthfulness of the same can write to the parties themselves.

It will be a precious volume to those who are afflicted in either soul or body. The chapters on faith, and also other subjects, will strengthen the faith of the reader, and aid in a closer walk with Him who is the “giver of every good and perfect gift.”

It contains 248 good-sized pages; good, plain print, on heavy paper. Neatly bound in cloth, $ .75. Library (half morocco), marble edge, $1.10. Send two cent stamp for special terms to agents. Address,

__________

Also nine brethren were chosen of the Spirit, and of the assembly of saints, to act as trustees for the camp ground of whom Bro. E. E. Byrum is chairman, Bro. W. B. Grover secretary: any one having any business or wishing information address them, Grand Junction, Mich.

Furthermore we would inform the children of God in all parts, that the Lord has located Bro. Bixler and family from Ill., Bro. Lockhart from Ohio, Bro. Stowell from this state, and perhaps Bro. Pearl also upon the camp ground farm, to improve and till the same. They are living in the camp houses at present, and are going to work, clearing and plowing. They purpose laboring for the Lord, satisfied with board and clothing, and purpose to make that land a source of supplies for the Trumpet family, and we trust also a children’s home. When filled with grain and fruit, it will be a good help: but at present, it is all labor and outlay, and no income. These dear ones are willing with us to trust God for their living. So beloved remember their prayers will be ascending to God for their daily needs, and the Spirit will surely move you that have of this world’s products to share with them. Grain, produce, and everything that mortals need to eat and wear will come very acceptable, and move much thanksgiving to God. Dearly beloved we must all help these willing consecrated workers until this land is improved, when it will repay the laborers, and have something over for the cause of Christ. Beloved do not forget this. Ere long one or more of the buildings must be sided and plastered, to funish comfortable quarters. They can do the work if the material is provided. So let each one give something as the Lord has prospered you, and you shall not lose your reward. When not at work in the soil, there is wood to cut and the grove to improve, plenty to do, for all that God calls to the place. Send by freight or express for the gospel farm, in care of E. E. Byrum, Grand Junction, Mich.

TWO WOLVES IN SHEEP’S CLOTHING.

We hear of one A. M. Raper coming among the saints in Cal. assuming to be a teacher of righteousness, but he is one of Satan’s instruments, transformed as an angel of light, yet filled with darkness. We are personally acquainted with him, and we warn all saints against him; there is no soundness in him. He pretends to preach holiness, but as a serpent slyly undermines the truth, by denying the two works of grace. He is also anti-ordinance. Moreover he abandoned his own wife, and became the instrument of separating another man’s wife from her husband, on the pretext of ill treatment, and he and that woman have traveled together, and disgraced the cause of Christ. These things we know and can prove.

Another, Samuel Lindsey, whom we have heard of some time ago at Walkerton, Ind., laboring for Babylon. He is full of fornication and lies. Having put away his lawful wife and married some one younger. His track has been slimed with corruption for the last fifteen years. He uses the ministry as a cloak to cover his sins, and because too utter lazy to make an honest living. Both these priests of Satan have been published years ago.

__________

It also becomes our duty for the safety of the cause of Christ, to inform the church of the living God, that a large colored man by the name of Bell, who was spoken of a few times in the Trumpet as a preacher, has never reached the plane of salvation and real usefulness he needs, and evidently is becoming more alienated from God and his people, and cannot be recomended by us as a fit man to preach the gospel.

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

_____

Welland, Ont.

Greeting to all the Beloved Saints Scattered Abroad: The Canada camp meeting was victorious for the Lord. We felt directed of the Lord to continue it a week longer than it had been announced, which we did and the Lord blessed our labors unto the end. The meetings were largely attended, and with little exception good order prevailed. The truth was deeply planted in many hearts, and there were. added unto the church in Canada, during the camp meeting, about twenty-five souls. The ordinance of baptism was administered on two occasions near Fenwick. Fourteen in all followed the Lord in the sacred ordinance. Because of neglect to prepare, the ordinances of the Lord’s supper and feet washing were not observed until many of the saints from a distance had returned home. Hence but about thirty were left to participate. But we had a happy time, for the Lord verified unto us the promise, “If ye know these things happy are ye if ye do them.” — Jno. 13:17. The workers present at the camp meeting were Bro. and Sister Clayton, Bro. and Sister Patchen, all of Canada, Sisters Sowers and Dunmire of Pa., Bro’s Lytle, Yoder, and myself of Ohio, and others.

We intend, the Lord willing, to remain in these parts a short time preaching the everlasting gospel and then return to our home. Remember us in your prayers dear brethren.

I remain your sanctified brother,

Wm. G. Schell.

Before leaving Hartselle, Ala. the Lord gave us a precious meeting. Seven were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then followed the washing of the saints’ feet, and the Lord’s supper, and the Lord fulfilled his promise, “If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.” I expect to return south after the camp meetings, if the Lord will.

Permanent address Grand Junction, Mich.

Bro. S. L. Speck, writes from Burket, Ind., June 26, 1892 as follows:

“We have been doing some evangelistic work since we last reported. We held meetings at seven different places since we last reported and have seen the salvation of souls, the healing of the sick by faith and prayer, also baptized 14 and had ordinance meetings in which God most wonderfully blest our souls. Also ordained Bro. C. Orr elder and J. Mahanka deacon of the church at Tampico, Ind. June 3, 4, and 5 we had meeting in Adams Co. with the little church, which the Lord planted last winter west of Geneva about six miles, and from the 7th to the nth we were with the people of God near Greentown, Ind.”

To the Saints of the most high God: We are still triumphant in the faith once delivered unto the saints, and by his omnipotent grace shall ever prove loyal to the King of saints, and thus continue to be fellow citizens with the saints, so that when the King cometh with ten thousand of his saints, we may be caught up together with them in the clouds. Hallelujah! The meeting closed here last Sun evening with interested congregation. We folded up the tent yesterday and are soon ready to flee to another city. The next move is to Los Angeles, the Lord willing, to which place we expect to go next Sat. Expect to have ordinance meeting this evening. The meetings here have visibly resulted in a few being added to the church, a number of consecrations for heart purity, the establishing of the church upon the immutable Word, five subscriptions for the Trumpet, and the raging of the devil, all for which we thank God and take courage, knowing our labor is not in vain in the Lord. In all our experience, we never held meetings where there seemed so much deep conviction upon the people, and it seemed for awhile that a multitude were in the valley of decision, and the deathly silence and suspense of that period was wonderful, and more than our hearts could endure, knowing the awful consequences of a wrong decision in such a dreadful crisis; but the poor souls one by one made their choice against the gentle impulses of the Holy Spirit until the mighty wave passed over them leaving their hearts harder because of their rebellion against God. Oh, the bondage of sin in these last days! Sectism, secret societies, tobacco, riches, lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God, etc., combine in a thralldom worse than that of Egypt. Truly the day of Gentile grace is nearly fulfilled. The holy remnant must be gathered out from the rubbish of error and then shall the King appear. Hallelujah! Address us at 138 N. Los Angeles St., Los Angeles, Cal.

Your brother and sister, separated unto the gospel,

Norwood, Mo., June 23, 1892.

To the Dear Saints: In our last report we were at Frisco, Ark.; had just closed one meeting and spoke there of another meeting to begin about seven miles from where our first meeting was. We commenced there June 9, and continued until the 19th. The Lord did bless us in giving his word. There was but one that claimed to be justified in time of the meetings. Two or three were searching sanctification, but did not seem to reach the desired blessing for some reason. There were some backsliders restored. Others asked for prayers that they might get back to the Lord. The Lord was working upon the hearts of the people; some seemed to be too stubborn to yield, but we do praise God for the unity that was brought about in that meeting, And Sunday the 19th we had an ordinance meeting, and it was a grand time; there were thirty that took a part, and in that number there were several of the ones that had been rejecting part of the ordinances. They seemed to get a wonderful blessing from the Lord in obeying him. There were many praises went up that blessed Sabbath evening to God the giver of all good. It was a delightful place for a true child of God to be, but those who were not clear in their souls I am sure did not enjoy it much, for there is no real enjoyment to a soul that has gone away from God and lost that sweet peace out of their souls. We closed the meeting that evening with victory on the side of the Lord. Glory and honor to him that gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ! On Monday morning we went to Frisco, and there received a letter that my daughter was very sick and could not last long without a change, and they desired me to come home at once, so I took the first train for home, leaving Ostis Wilson my son to continue the meeting: I reached home Tuesday morning and found my daughter up and walking about. The Lord had healed her. She had been sick over one week.

I want all the the dear saints to pray for me daily that God will use me as a firebrand in this crooked and perverse nation. If the Lord wills I will return to Ark. where we left, to help in the work of the Lord. Let all the saints that can attend our C. M. that will commence Aug. 11.

Your brother out for the pure gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ,

W. M. Wilson.

Dear Beloved Saints: The Lord bless you all. On Saturday, June 11, we went to Decatur, Ind.. in company with twelve of the dear saints of this place; held meeting over Lord’s day. Seven were at the altar the last evening, two claimed sanctification, three converted. The Lord carried on the work above all opposition. Many souls under conviction. Any one of God’s little ones that can go there will be gladly received. They are so ready to hear the straight word preached in its purity. Pray that they become so rooted and grounded and established that the gates of hell shall not prevail against them.

Dearly Beloved Brethren: We are well and saved with complete victory in our souls. Praise the Lord! Since our last report we have visited the church of the living God at Tampico, Ind. twice and enjoyed the blessings of God in speaking his word to the people, and two souls were saved, and the dear Lord did wonderfully manifest his power in healing Sister Orr. We were also in Washington Co., Ind., and had two services the 19th of June. Then we went to Freeport, Ind. where we met Bro’s C. E. Orr and Edgar Fleenor of Tampico. We had two services, and the Lord did bless our souls in preaching his word and testifying to the gospel of our salvation. Here the Lord opened a new field for the gospel work. I am at home at present, harvesting. Praise the Lord! He gives us strength and grace to help in time of need. The devil seems to be doing his best to hedge us in and keep us out of the field, but he and all who are deceived by him and who are colaborers with him in trying to hinder and destroy our influence and do us injury have made a complete failure, and we are determined by the grace of God that all such efforts shall be a failure. Finally brethren pray for us that our lives be pure and we be in all things as becometh the gospel of Christ. We feel that it has become necessary for us to move from this place and God who knows all things knoweth why. Pray that he may direct us.

Your brother and sister in the body of Christ,

Dear Trumpet Readers: Join us in praising the God of our salvation for his wonderful works to the children of men. Since our last report we have been in the field about all the time. At Hewet we were to hold a tabernacle meeting, and all the arrangements were made, the time set; but the sect preacher forbade the people letting us into the community, saying if they did it was no use for him to come any more to preach. Truth. We went at the time set for the meeting to commence, and held one meeting at a private house, and seven consecrated. Bro. Melvin Moore and I went to Chippewa, where we were joined by Father Morley. The meeting lasted five days. Three consecrated for sanctification. The church was greatly strengthened. Brother and Sister Patchen, who have left all to go into the work of the Lord; went to Sherkston and held one meeting, and five consecrated. Our God is almighty.

Your humble brother, trusting the living God,

Grand Junction Camp Meeting.

Which was held in the name of the Lord Jesus. This holy convocation was not so much a surprise on account of the wonderful grasp of faith that took hold on the Almighty God and his big promises. “If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.” — John 14:14. The camp ground is a beautiful grove on an elevation with a good well of water. About thirty preachers and nearly one thousand saints attended the meeting. At the first invitation several altars were filled. There were probably two hundred consecrations or more, and about two hundred participated in washing each other’s feet and celebrating the death of the Son of God. The work of salvation was thorough; the workers seemed to understand their Master’s business, and the work of real crucifixion went on. Most all that consecrated reached a real experience. The blessed Lord was present to heal and many stepped into the pool and as many as touched him [Jesus] were made whole, also devils were cast out in his name. It did my soul good to go up to this Jerusalem once in eight years, and I stopped nearly two days at the Trumpet office and saw how the Lord was blessing those faithful hands who are sending the blessed truth to thousands. Brethren let us pray for them; they are doing a noble work, they do not enjoy the privilege of being in meetings from place to place as many of us do, yet they all seem joyful and happy.

Your brother saved just now,

To the Church of the First Born, Greeting: Dearly beloved, God bless you all for Jesus’ sake. Amen. The Lord is very precious to us here. Praise his holy name! We are glad to report victory in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. On Lord’s day the 19th of June the Lord sent us a precious overflowing shower of holy fire, which filled our hearts with many shouts and praises to God. There were a few consecrations, and the devil raged without, some shooting fire crackers, setting one building on fire which was soon extinguished by the help of the saints. On last Lord’s day six were buried with Christ in baptism, confessing by so doing their death to the world and sin, and their new life hid with Christ in God. God is wonderfully settling and establishing his church in Denver. Praise his holy name! Expect soon to set up the tabernacle in another part of the city. May God bless our efforts in the saving of many precious souls. Expect to stay here some time yet, perhaps till the Robinson C. M. Pray much for us and the salvation of precious souls.

Dear Saints of the Living God: May the dear Lord bless you all abundantly. Amen. Our last report was from Napier, Mo. From there we went to Nishnabotna, Mo. Here the Lord raised up quite a number of blessed saints under the labors of Bro. A. A. Kinzie, and the saints are building a good meeting house 28×40, which was nearly completed. Here we also met Sister Janet Sillers, whom the Lord is wonderfully using to his glory in proclaiming the everlasting gospel to perishing souls. The Lord blessed us here in giving forth the word of life. The church was blessed, and a few were made free. There being so much rain and high water, we went home on May 11, and remained until June 3. We came to this place and set up the Lord’s new tabernacle, and commenced meeting. Bro. M. H. Long and wife were the only ones here that were out in the evening light. Bro.. A. A. Kinzie and Sister Janet Sillers came over from Mo. to assist us in this meeting, whom the Lord is wonderfully using in the administration of his word. The Lord is doing a good work here in convincing the dear people of the truth. Some have come out of darkness into light and have been made free in Christ Jesus. Praise our God! On last Sunday night while Sister Sillers was giving forth the word of life, the mighty power of God seemed to settle down on the whole congregation. Saints were shouting, and sinners were weeping, and the whole congregation seemed spell bound. Many had never seen the like, and were all amazed, and ready to ask the question, as on the day of Pentecost, What meaneth this? On last night four came to the altar after meeting was dismissed. One said he had no rest for three days and wanted us to pray for him. He was made free. Hallelujah! We expect to close meeting here, the Lord willing about the 27th and go to Berwyn, Custer Co., Neb. to commence there on July 2, and continue as long as the Lord wills. Bro. M. A. Fly of Oolagah, Ind. Ter. is with us and expects to go with us all summer; and at Berwyn we expect Bro. Chas. M. Kelley to join us. Dear saints, pray much for us and the work in the West.

Bro. A. A. Kinzie and Sister Sillers expect to go back to Mo. from here to work for the Master there. May God bless them much and use them to his glory. Amen.

Dear Saints: I feel I with the rest of the saints must write my testimony. I am now going on my 88th year, and have just recently been saved and healed. This winter I had the La Grippe and other diseases, and thought my time had come to die. Oh, I cannot tell how I suffered! My folks thought I would soon have to leave the world. Some of my children being saved at that time had before talked to me of Jesus, and what he was able to do. And while my misery grew worse and worse I began to think on these things, and called on God to save and heal me, when all at once the Lord lifted me up, and did so wonderfully save and heal me both soul and body. And he just pours the glory in my soul more and more. Although I am blind, I praise his name, I am healed of my pain, and feel real well. I ask all the saints to pray for me that I get my eye sight again if it is his will. I expect to serve the Lord the rest of my days. I love to have the saints to come in and pray and sing with me, I have enjoyed more in the last three weeks than I ever did all my 87 years. Now I warn all the old that are not saved to get to Jesus. Do not think yoy are so old that Jesus will not hear you. Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Pray for me.

Your sister saved,

Elizabeth Strickler.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT.

A LETTER FROM DR. JAMES C. JACKSON
TO
DR. HOLBROOK.

I am now sixty-six years old. Until I was thirty-six, my habits of life were such as were common to the people of my day and station. I knew nothing of the laws of life and health; I ate, drank, dressed, worked, played, rested, slept, and did as was the fashion of my day. Early in life I became ill, owing, as I now think, very much to errors in diet; but I did not then know, nor did my father, who was an old-school physician of high standing, know, that my ill health arose from dietetic errors. He contended against it from the side of administrative medicine, but I grew worse; and before I came to puberty it was said by the best physicians of that time that I had organic disease of the heart, and could not live long.

I do not know how many diseases the two hundred physicians I have had employed for me, or employee for myself, declared I had, each one of which tried his best by medicines to cure me. During the last twenty years of this period of my life, I have no recollection of ever having passed a day without taking some medicine prescribed for me by some physician The autumn before I came to be thirty-six years of age, I was taken sick away from home, and was in the hands of a physician all winter, who had the good sense not to give me any medicine, saying, it was of no use to me, because, in his judgment, I could never get well. I lingered in great suffering until spring, when, bolstered up with pillows, I was carried from my friend’s house to my own, never expecting to leave it again, when, incidentally, I heard of what was then called The Water Cure Treatment. I knew nothing about it, had no faith in it; but such stories were told of it as to interest me and interest my family and friends to investigate it; the result of which research was, that I went to a Hydropathic establishment of treatment.

The physician of the institution was a graduate of an Allopathic medical college, believed in giving medicine to his patients, knew little or nothing more than any other physician of his day about the laws of life and health, and paid little attention to diet while I was under his care. As all my other physicians had done before, he pronounced me incurable, and preferred that I should not remain, but consented to my earnest appeals, and so I spent the summer with him.

While I lay one night on my bed tossing with pain, an impression came to me that there was one thing which I had not tried from which I might receive benefit. The impression was, that I should change my manner of life, and it took hold of me with such force that I felt impelled to state it to my doctor, which I did; and while he thought nothing could come of it, he was willing I should try the experiment. So I began a revolution in my habits of living. The consequence was, that during that season, I came to the conclusion that if I could live, it must be through a very radical change in foods and drinks; that I, at least, needed food which was nutritious, but non-stimulating rather than its opposite. To know, therefore, what food to use and what to avoid, I had but to recollect how certain articles had always affected me. I followed out my thought and discarded all flesh meats, all stimulating drinks, all stimulo-narcotic beverages, all condiments of every kind (unless sugar be considered a condiment), and lived for twenty-three years on grains, fruits and vegetables, simply cooked, without any deviation. I ate no flesh of animals; I used no milk, nor butter, nor salt, nor spices; and nearly every disease which had cursed me through life, spoiling my childhood, embittering my young manhood, and ruined me for anything like earnest endeavor in my maturer years passed away, and I came to be free from all ailments except two, both of which were organic — one a disease of the heart and the other a disease of the kidneys. “Now I can do better on one meal a day than I can on two; I can digest it better, it will tax my nervous system less, I shall feel better, sleep better, and be stronger.”

Beneficial, however, as has been my strictly farinaceous, fruit and vegetable food upon my physical and bodily health, and gratifying to me as my improvement in this respect has been, I count it but small compared with the increased intellectual and moral efficiency which has resulted therefrom. More than this, I declare that my spiritual faculties have been wonderfully energized; that I have grown into a better, truer, and more advanced knowledge of Christ and of the wants of humanity. I appreciate principles and forces, motives and plans for the amelioration of my fellow-men vastly better than when I lived under the old regime. I keep my passions, propensities, and appetites within my own handling. Every quality of my nature relates itself to normal, expression much more readily and effectually; and I do most heartily commend abstinence from the flesh of animals as food to every human creature under the sun who wishes to put away from himself the lusts of the flesh and put on the graces of the Spirit.

During these years I have been able, under God’s good providence, to give back health and strength and heart and home to very many of my fellows, who, like myself, had been living in the gall of bitterness and the bonds of iniquity, by inducing them to forego substantially the use of the flesh of animals as their staple food. I am sure that there is a divine philosophy underlying the question how men shall eat and how they shall drink, and that it is very desirable to all who would rise to a higher plane of consciousness that they should do as I have tried to do — to eat and to drink to the glory to God.

Selected.

A Thousand Years as One Day.

_____

Recently we remarked in the Trumpet that the early church fathers understood 2 Peter 3:8, in the light that there would be six thousand years of probation and toil, corresponding with the six work days, and then came the everlasting rest of the saints crowned in glory.

A brother wrote us asking where the information can be found. We therefore quote you from Barnabas, of the first century, an article under the head of, “The false and true Sabbath.” It is found on pages 127 and 128 of the first volume of the “Anti-nicene library.”

THE FALSE AND THE TRUE SABBATH.

Further, also, it is written concerning the Sabbath in the Decalogue which [the Lord] spoke, face to face, to Moses on Mount Sinai, “And sanctify ye the Sabbath of the Lord with clean hands and a pure heart.” And He says in another place, “If my sons keep the Sabbath, then will I cause my mercy to rest upon them.” The Sabbath is mentioned at the beginning of the creation [thus]: And God made in six days the works of his hands, and made an end on the seventh day, and rested on it, and sanctified it.” Attend, my children, to the meaning of this expression, “He finished in six days.” This implieth that the Lord will finish all things in six thousand years, for a day is with him a thousand years. And He himself testifieth, saying, “Behold, to-day will be as a thousand years.” Therefore my children, in six days, that is, in six thousand years, all things will be finished. “And He rested on the seventh day.” This meaneth: when His Son,coming [again], shall destroy the time of the wicked man, and judge the ungodly, and change the sun, and the moon, and the stars, then shall he truly rest on the seventh day. Moreover, He says, “Thou shalt sanctify it with pure hands and a pure heart.” If, therefore, any one can now sanctify the day which God hath sanctified, except he is pure in heart in all things, we are deceived. Behold therefore: certainly then one properly resting sanctifies it, when we ourselves, having received the promise, wickedness no longer existing, and all things having been made new by the Lord, shall be able to work righteousness. Then we shall be able to sanctify it, having been first sanctified ourselves. Further, He says to them, “Your new moons and your Sabbaths I cannot endure.” Ye perceive how He speaks: Your present Sabbaths are not acceptable to me, but that is which I have made, [namely this] when, giving rest to all things, I shall make a beginning of the eight day, that is, a beginning of another world. Wherefore, also, we keep the eighth day with joy fulness, the day also on which Jesus rose again from the dead. And when he had manifested himself, he ascended into the heavens.

Dear Saints of God: I praise God this morning for sweet victory in my soul. I do praise God for a true birthright in his family. God is my father, Jesus is my elder brother, and Jerusalem which is above, which is free, is my mother; and I have many brothers and sisters in this great family which are God’s. O I do praise His holy name! They who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause He is not ashamed to call them brethren. Heb. 2:11. Dear beloved in the Lord, I do praise and magnify His holy name for his precious love to me. I was taken with severe attack of inflammation of the lungs, and God had mercy on me, and heard the petition of his children in my behalf. All glory and praise be to his holy name. I am taking Jesus, now and forever for my great physician, for both soul and body. Dear saints, let us pray much for one another, that we may be kept in the perfect will of God.

Yours in much love in Jesus,

S. M. Smith.

Dear Saints: I feel led by the Holy Spirit to testify to the saving and keeping power of my blessed Lord and Master. Praise his dear name forever! I realize the saving power of my blessed Savior so wonderfully this morning. My whole body is full of glory, sanctified wholly. Glory to His name! His holy love so completely captured me, soul and body that it is all my delight to obey and follow where ever he leads me. The dear Lord has so wonderfully blessed me in obeying his commands that I cannot find words to tell how his love fills my soul. Glory to his name!

Your sister justified and sanctified through the precious blood of Jesus,

Araminda Hurless.

Dear Saints of God: I am rejoicing with you all in this evening light. Bless God’s holy name! We are rejoicing to know that our name is written in heaven in the Lamb’s book of life. O how He does own His own people when we meet in one accord and in one body. God has a remnant here. There are a few standing true and are out on the sea of glass.

God in his mercy is saving some precious sonls here. One poor sin- bound soul was passing by where we were met in the name of Jesus, and heard the songs of Zion that His saints were singing, and he was struck with conviction, came in and with tears streaming down his cheeks said he was lost. He fell down and cried out for mercy and God for Christ’s sake forgave his sins, and he went on his way rejoicing. Glory to Jesus, it is wonderful how God does work! Many are getting their eyes open as to where they are standing. My prayer is that God will save more precious souls here in Denver. Let all the saints of God pray for a mighty work here in this wicked city.

Yours under the blood,

J. W. Newkirk.

I feel led this morning to send my testimony to the Trumpet for the first time. I praise God for a full and complete salvation that saves man from the least and last remains of sin. O how sweet it is to trust in Jesus and take him at his word! He is a help in all times of need. But what a lift it gives us to go upon a hilltop. We seem to shake off the dust of earth. The air is pure and clear and all is calm. We look down on the road by which we came and what seemed like great rocks in our way, we see now are the steps by which we rose to high ground. The trials which we have to bear are not to cast us down, but to lift us up and to make us feel our need of Jesus. A lift from him is worth all the help that man can give; for when the soul is on high ground we can be brave and bold, for the Lord is with us. When Jesus is with us, we are all right, safe from the winds and storms. We are all like seamen. The world is our sea. But when the storms come what then? Shall we trust Jesus only by day and not in the night? Yes, trust him in the night as well as day; for if Jesus is in the boat with us we are sure to reach the port. David says, I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence comes my help. My help comes from the Lord which made heaven and earth. He is our rock and our strength. If Jesus had need to pray, how much more do we need to seek him and pray to him. Dear saints, let us pray mightily for the true word to be preached every where, and that the evening light may shine forth into the hearts of the people, and that much good may be done in the name of Jesus.

Your brother saved by the blood of Christ,

P. F. Bradshaw.

Dear Editor Gospel Trumpet: I thought I would write a few lines to the glory of God. I do praise God that I can testify that Jesus saves me to the uttermost, and I am free from all sects. Glory to God! I never intend to belong to anything but Christ. We have had much trouble with the Church of God sect and others, who to wrap a cloak around their own ungodly lusts are all the time trying to make Paul out a great sinner, while there are a few that are trying to hold on to God. If they do not soon come out from among them and touch not the unclean thing, they will all likewise perish with those false teachers who are leading them down to hell. Their cloak will not hide them from God’s wrath in that awful day. Neither are their sins hid from God’s holy children, for the Spirit of God is the searcher of all hearts. Oh praise God forever for his leading Spirit! I can say with Paul, (if you can bear with me) “l will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.” 2. Cor. 12:1. On Thursday night, May 5, I was preparing the bed for my little boy, and talking at the time of the power of God, when suddenly I saw a wonderful light near my head and I fell to the floor under the power of God. Then I was carried away thousands of miles, and let down where there were multitudes of people all walking a plank. Among them were most of this same sect people. Then I started out on the plank trying to keep up with the people, when suddenly there was an awful crash and an awful voice said, “Depart from me ye cursed.” Then the Lord showed me the awful pit of hell. Then I felt my feet slipping into that awful horror. I cried to God to save the people, but it was too late. Oh the agony I was in! Just as I felt myself sinking down into the flames a hand took hold of me and led me over.

Then I was carried, or led upward through a heavenly atmosphere with the light remaining over my head. Then I saw the walls of the great city of God. Oh, the beautiful colors can never be told! And it dazzled like the sun. I now saw many bands of angels flying over and about the city.

Then the hand led me through a shining gate, and all the host of heaven were praising God with voices, and with all the music of heaven. The hand then let go of me and I saw it was the Lord Jesus, and he said to me, “You are home but not to stay.”

And I fell at his feet on my face and wept. I did not want to go back to earth. Then the dear Savior lifted me up on my feet and said, “You two must be my servants a little while, I send my servants two by two.” And the light over my head was now a beautiful rainbow with seven colors.

I saw many beautiful crowns, and golden streets. Then I returned again through a heavenly breeze, getting all the time farther away until I came to myself, and I thought I had been in a deep sleep. Oh the happiness I felt, and do feel in my soul fo.. God’s wonderful love to the children of men! It is past finding out. Dear saints, pray that God may lead us in all truth. I never heard of the GOSPEL TRUMPET and “saints,” until just a few weeks ago. My heart says. Praise God and the Lamb forever and ever for such a people, and such a holy gospel paper! Glory to God and the Lamb, he has been leading us in the same way, not knowing that God had such a host in this beautiful way. We have laid aside those Babylonian garments, and are walking in the light of God. My prayer is, God bless all the saints and GOSPEL TRUMPET, and cause his Spirit to go with you, to lay judgement to the line. Amen.

Your saved sister,

Mattie Dennis.
