HUMILITY.

CONSECRATION.

And who then in willing to consecrate his service this day unto the Lord? 1 Chron. 29:5.

BELOYED in the Lord: I have been feeling for some time like writing a few thoughts on consecration. In the first place, true Bible consecration means a great deal more than some think it does. It means everything. “But cursed be the deceiver which hath in his flock a male, and voweth and sacrificeth a corrupt thing, for I am a great King, saith the Lord of hosts, and my name is dreadful among the heathen. — Mal. 1:14.

When you tell God that you give up all to him, be sure that you do it. Do not lie to God like Ananias and Sapphira, Remember their fate. Acts 5:3-10.

An incomplete sacrifice will never bring a perfect experience either in pardon or sanctification. A person coming to God for pardon must consecrate himself to God’s will and service the best he knows how and take God at his word and obey him in all things. The sinner must bring a dead sacrifice. “And you hath he quickened who were, dead in trespasses and in sins.” Eph 2:1.

A sinner’s consecration for pardon is not complete until he consecrates to take God at his word and believe it without any feeling. “He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself.” 1 Jno. 5:10.

Also the believer that comes to God for the cleansing, his consecration must be perfect. Rom. 12:1, 2. He must be in a holy condition, freely justified before God, and the entire person is included, soul, body, mind, talents, property, money and all. I have no confidence in a man’s consecration that does not include his pocket book, horses and wagon and everything. Some have their teams consecrated a little part of the time, and will allow them to be used for God in getting souls saved, and then again they cannot spare them. Others have their pocket books consecrated but very little of the time. Now dear souls, do not let the devil deceive you. If your consecration is not perfect you do not have a perfect faith, neither have you a perfect salvation. When you hear people cry out “My leanness! my leanness!” you may know there is something wrong with their consecration. Some will excuse themselves this way: “I am not called out into God’s work and I do not have to pay or support those who are called, because God’s anointed do not tax the people like people do in sectism.” But remember God demands of you a free-will offering. “Let him that is taught in the Word communicate to him that teacheth in all good things.” Gal. 6:6.

To stay cleansed a person must keep all given up to the will of God; keep all on the altar. It is the altar, Christ, that does the sanctifying; so the offering cannot be sanctified if it is not on the altar. Ex. 29:37. Heb. 13:10-12. It is possible after you have made a perfect consecration and received the sanctifier, the seal of the Spirit — Eph. 1: 13, to become slack in your consecration and lose ground almost unconscious to yourself.

I will give you a little of my experience on that line, trusting it will do some dear soul good and aid them to discern the enemy’s tricks in time to keep out of his snare. For a number of years my consecration has covered the whole ground, that I was willing to do anything for Jesus or go anywhere in the whole world to lift up Christ at any time; alone or any other way God saw fit to send me. My joy has been complete, and my faith unlimited. Praise our God! But nearly two months ago, after I saw the urgent call in the GOSPEL TRUMPET for workers to the foreign field, I was thinking over it very earnestly one day and the Spirit of God spoke to me in language like this, “What if I should want you to go to the foreign field soon, can you say amen to it?” and I said I could if I did not have a dear mother that I felt some responsibility in caring for in her old days. Then the Spirit of God reminded me that that was my excuse when he first called me to his work, and now I had been out in his work for eleven years and scores of souls had been saved and sanctified, and no doubt some of them were in the glory world, who otherwise may never have heard the gospel, and been lost, and their blood required at my hand. I still said that that is the only excuse I have, and the Spirit of God left off speaking with me about it, but soon afterward I began to get poorly in my body, and it seemed as though I was going to come down upon a bed of sickness. Hands were laid on me and prayer offered for my healing and God’s Spirit witnessed to it, but to my surprise I did not seem to get any better, but rather grew worse. It seemed as though my faith could not hold on for healing and if anybody would have asked me what was the matter with me I could not have told them. But I was just all weakness, and then the thought came, perhaps it was the change of climate. Then the enemy suggested, “If you would go to the foreign land you could not stand the climate.” Finally I got to feeling so bad in my body I saw I would have to quit work if I did not get relief, so I began to cry mightily unto God to know what was in the way, and the Lord brought a sermon to my mind that a brother had preached two years ago, on spiritual advancement. God showed me he wanted me to make special advancement, and I said amen and went to work. I saw my consecration had to be deepened, and then the foreign fields came to me again and God began to speak to my soul again saying, “Are you willing yet to go to the foreign fields, if it does deprive you of the privilege of taking care of your dear mother?” I saw the point, and I saw my consecration would not be complete if it did not cover that as well as everything else.

In looking back to the time when my affliction first began, my mind ran back to conversation the Lord had with me about the foreign fields and stopped right there. The problem was solved. I was not long getting my consecration up to the perfect will of God, and I want to say my health is springing forth speedily. Isa. 58:8. Now do not understand me that I have a special call to the foreign land soon, for I have not, but I say I have all given up to the perfect will of God, in all things. I am ready for marching orders at any time God says go, but I do not believe in going before I am sent, for if I did I would have no tidings like one of old. 2 Sam. 18:22.

Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. 1 Sam 15:22. We must be willing to do, or go, or be anything for Jesus, or bur consecration is not complete. Some will say, “I am not called to the foreign field and I do not have to help support those who are called.” You have to give according as God has prospered you, and lift up the prophet’s hands both by the prayer of faith and in giving of your means. Now be careful you not let the devil make you become slack regarding your consecration in that way as well as in other ways. Please read 1 Jno 3:17. Look well to it that you keep all perfectly consecrated to the will of God, and then when God makes a demand of you, it will not hurt you; for you will know it belongs to him, and it will be easy for you to return it back to the owner.

THE HIGH CALLING.

DEAR Saints of God: Have you pressed toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus? Do you forget those things which you have left behind, and are you now continually reaching forth unto those things which are before?

The apostle admonishes those that have left the wrath to come and are made whole in Christ; those that are grafted in the lovely vine and now are partakers of the fatness of the vine. He says, “Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded.” First, we must realize that we are bought with a price: therefore glorify Goc in your body and in your spirit, which are the Lord’s. Praise the Lord! We are not our own. We belong to Him who hath bought us.

Second, He wants us to count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus our Lord. We must at all times be found in him, not having our own righteousness, which is of the law (self) but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith. We must know him and the power of his resurrection. How many know the fellowship of his sufferings? If we suffer with him we shall also reign with him. Praise the Lord! Every saint of God must be perfect and on the highway of holiness. It will not do for God’s chosen ones to walk with selfish minds and purposes to simply gratify lust desire. God hath called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus. Dear saints, do you know that you are to have overcoming grace. That where sin once abounded, grace may be double the portion?

Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus: He was faithful in all things, to him that appointed him. We are not our own. We are nought with a price and called with a high calling for an elect purpose. For this cause we ought to give all diligence to make our calling and election sure. We must ever be found in Him, with the fruit of Canaan love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness and charity. Now if we have all these fruits of Canaan and do them we shall never fall. Praise the Lord!

Let us remember our high calling in Christ Jesus, and go for the things which are before. You know charity (love) thinketh no evil, and never faileth. Here is the sum of the whole matter. Where sin once abounded, grace should much more abound, the stony heart was made into a pure heart. Now let Christ live in it; let him be our all and in all. All to his glory and praise, that Christ by faith may dwell in your hearts, being rooted and grounded in love. Let the roots of love spread and be well grounded. The love in Christ which cannot be measured by length and breadth and depth and height.

Our high calling in Christ Jesus hath raised us up together and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus. And this is what makes all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Christ Jesus, in whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of Him. The divine, perfect love of God humbles us so we are willing to obey Him in all things. It makes us willing to lose our reputation and our life all for Christ’s sake. It makes us to do whatever our hands find to do, with all the might and strength in us, giving all the glory to God. It makes us willing to lose all earthly knowledge and to be taught of God, and have the Holy Ghost to guide us into all truth and to comfort us, keep us in all his will. Let us be found in Him. Come out of sectism, babel confusion.

SOWING AND REAPING.

BE not deceived, God is not mocked, for whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap. Gal. 6:7.

This is ever the divine law. God has proclaimed this law and it is unchangeable. It never fails; for he that soweth to the flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption. Gal. 6:8. He that soweth wickedness shall reap the same. Job. 4:8. He that soweth the wind shall reap the whirlwind. Hos. 8:7. He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity. Prov. 22:8. Thus you see that we have God’s word for the assertion that whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap. How often we see parents look quietly on when their children are engaged in vain and foolish conversation, jesting or improper actions. Or fry to excuse their sons’ wildness by saying that they are only sowing their wild oats. O dear ones, can young people sow lust and reap virtue? And if they sow wild oats, need you be surprised when they reap a a crop of dragons teeth? How often the sins of youth haunt all after years. It is true that there have been wild young men who have afterwards become very good Christians, but it was not their wildness that made them Christians. Before they could become followers of Christ they would have to repent of every sin that had been committed. They must sow to the Spirit before they can expect to reap life everlasting.

If a man would sow tares all his life he would never reap a crop of wheat. And if we are ever sowing to the flesh we can only expect to reap corruption. But upon the other hand, he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. Gal. 6:8. They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed shall doubtless come again rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him. Ps. 126:56. Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy. Hos. 10:12. To him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward. Prov. 11:18.

Then let us be up and doing; sowing daily seeds of righteousness and love. Let us ever sow seed for the Master, and let us not be weary in well doing, for in due season we shall reap if we faint not.

WHY I LEFT THE SECRET LODGE.

I left the secret lodge for several reasons.

  1. I wanted a clean heart; and in order to get it, knowing it came by an entire consecration — and entire means everything — I had to give up the lodge.
  2. After I had given myself to Jesus Christ I could not go where he was not allowed to go, for there is no Christ in the lodge.
  3. To be in the lodge was to be “unequally yoked together with unbelievers.” Also, “what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?” For there are many infidels in the lodge.
  4. To be in the lodge was to be “conformed to the world.” And last but not least, I believe in a regular old fashioned religion that takes a man out of all worldly institutions, and takes all love of the world out of him. I might write more on this subject, but I forbear. I hope and pray that these few lines may help along the good cause; and that others may “go and do likewise.” Amen.

Dear Trumpet Readers: As I see so many good testimonies I feel directed this morning to ask God’s children to pray for me, that I may receive the second work of grace. I was convicted several months ago and my soul was so burdened that I could not find rest until about two months ago I felt that the Lord forgave my sins, and oh! how well I did love him and trust him; but I feel my trust grows weak, and I think it is because I did not press on to be sanctified. I do hunger and thirst for the good Spirit to be with me all the time, and I want all to pray that I may be ready to meet the Lord. And I want God’s grace, so that I can lead my little family on to glory with me.

I am so glad I have found the highway that was cast up for the ransomed of the Lord to walk in. The evening light began to shine in my heart eleven years ago last winter while I was an invalid, before I ever heard it preached. So when I heard it preached I knew it was of God, for the Spirit and the Word agree. I do not get to hear preaching very often, but Jesus is with me for soul and body. Sister Mary Cole and company are pushing the work at or near Sheridan, Oklahoma, in a new field of gospel work, and report a glorious work of rescuing the lost. Souls are being saved, and they desire the prayers of God’s children in behalf of the work there.

The camp meeting has already virtually begun. A number of saints have already arrived, from various points. Meetings continue every night since last Sabbath. The Lord is present in power. The glorious camp-fire is burning. Some souls have been set free. Come up to the feast.

We were all joyfully surprised at the coming of the Bro. Achor, who was moved of the Lord while over the sea to come over and attend the camp meeting, and see his family, and ere long he expects to return to England, and then on to Germany. He called a few days with the dear brethren in the East and enjoyed a blessed feast there. We thank God for the good report of the work over the sea. It is already quite well established in Liverpool. We may expect to hear of Bro. and Sister Rupert, and Sister Shoffner setting sail over the ocean to reinforce dear Bro. Henry, ere long. Amen. Let the heralds fly.

BE YE HOLY.

“Thy testimonies are very sure: holiness becometh thine house, O Lord, forever.” Psa. 93:5. That ye may remember, and do all my commandments, and be holy unto your God. — Num. 15:40. But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation. — 1 Pet. 1:15. For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth. — 1 Pet. 2:21, 22. Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. — 1 Pet. 1:13.

But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. — 1 Pet. 4:7. Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously and godly in this present world. — Tit. 2:12. Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. — Eph. 5:4. Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. — Eph. 5:14-17. And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; that ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing. — 1 Thess. 4:11, 12.

God’s word says. Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. — Jno. 5:39. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgeteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. — James 1:21-25. For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. — 2 Tim. 1:7. According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love. — Eph. 1:4. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby we know that we are in him. He that saith he abideth in him, ought himself also to walk, even as he walked. — 1 Jno. 2:5, 6.

First we come to God dead in trespasses and sins, and by the convicting Spirit of Christ see our lost condition in the world without God and hope. We repent of all our sins, and he says he is faithful and just to forgive. By asking in faith he pardons us. Therefore being justified by faith we have peace with God. Being made alive in God we are commanded to present our bodies a living sacrifice. A men dead in trespasses and in sins cannot offer himself a living sacrifice. For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication. — 1 Thes. 4:3. But we are bound to give thanks always for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen us to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth. — 2 Thess. 2:13.

The word says he is able to keep that which we have committed unto him. The scriptures plainly show a second work of grace wrought in the soul, first justification and afterward sanctification. I am the true vine and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away, and every branch that beareth fruit he purgeth it that it may bring forth more fruit. — Jno. 15:1, 2. In the fifth verse it reads, I am the vine and ye are the branches. Now we are commanded to bear fruit. Let us see what this fruit is. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness. temperance, against such there is no law. — James 5:22, 23. And besides this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, and to virtue knowledge, and to knowledge temperance. and to temperance patience, and to patience godliness, and to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. — 2 Pet. 1:5 8. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things ye shall never fall. — Verse 10.

As perilous times have come, let us all keep on the whole armor, holding up the shield of faith whereby we may quench all the fiery darts of the enemy. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons might ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness. — 2 Pet. 5:11.

God is gathering his people out from the places they have been scattered in the dark and cloudy day. And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: and they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. — Isa. 35:10. And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying. This is the way, walk ye in it. — Isa. 30:21. Jesus says, I am the way, the truth, and the life.

Then let us keep our eyes on Jesus, walking in the light as it shines before us. We can have our testimony continually as Enoch of old, that we please the Lord. Christ died on the cross that we might be holy, that we might have the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost. Get this Comforter which shall guide you into all truth, then you will not find it hard to live the life of a Christian. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. — Eccl. 12:13. It does not pay to go through this world with a lack in the soul, when God says he will make us perfect and entire, wanting nothing. It is a consolation to the soul that when this life is over, we can say as apostle Paul, I have fought a good fight; I have finished my course; I have kept the faith. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

Dear Brethren: May the Lord keep you firm and valiant. The dear Lord separated Father and I at Auburn, Neb. and sent me south to Vinland, Kan. where we had three weeks’ meetings. The Lord wonderfully blessed our souls and the saints were strengthened and built up. Praise the Lord! One soul reclaimed and much good done. From there we came to Kansas City, Mo. to help Bro. Wendel erect his tabernacle; and meeting will commence June 1, if the Lord wills. Here I met with dear Sister Laughlin. She has wonderful power with God. Oh, how our

Spirits did blend together when we met! Hallelujah! My soul bounded within me, and praises ascended to heaven when I found that God had a true people in this city. Sister Laughlin is one of God’s true messengers. She teaches the straight word, and will not compromise with the devil. Hallelujah to God! She expects to help us here in this great battle. If any of the brethren pass through this city we would be glad to have you stop with us. We feel that there is a wonderful opening here for meeting. Pray for us.

Dearly Beloved Brethren: May grace and peace be multiplied to you. Amen. The meeting near Grover Hill, O., over last Lord’s day was blest and owned of the Lord. One soul claimed pardon, and the body strengthened and edified, and our soul blest in speaking his word. My soul was grieved within me to see some that once had a good experience in salvation, in a backslidden condition. May the dear Lord cause them to arise and come to Father’s house. Much and lasting good might be done could there be a series of meetings held there soon. I only can get along the skirmish lines, as it were, for the present, but by the grace of God we shall keep up the firing and cause the enemy’s ranks all the trouble we can. I expect to be with the church near Antwerp, O. over next Lord’s day. Your servant and brother in the body of Christ, saved in him. Pray for me.

Tampico, Ind., May 31, 1893.

To all the Saints, Greeting: May everlasting peace and joy in the Holy Spirit abide in you at all times, and keep you free indeed from all sin. Amen. Our souls are happy to day and free from all sin for which we give all the glory to God. From Apr. 29, till June 1, Bro. S. A. Yoder and I held the following four meetings:

1st. We began meeting in the Fleenor Valley school house, Apr. 30, and continued nine days, during which time God most wonderfully spake his truth through us to that people. Three souls were made free by the blood of Jesus.

2d. We thence moved to the Gross S. H. about three and one-half miles from the above place where we held meeting four nights. No one saved, but a good interest manifest, and trust the seed sown will spring up in the near future in many hearts. We regretted that we could not hold longer.

We then went to Little York and began meeting in the Campbellite house where we continued thirteen days. At this place God gave us many souls as a result of the truth being preached. I think about eighteen or twenty souls set free in Jesus, most of whom were out of Babylon. We never held in a meeting house owned by a sect that gave us full sway as at this place. Oh the eternal glory filled our soul while we preached and heard those made free tell how God had saved them. During the meeting Bro. Yoder baptized sixteen happy saints. God has a sweet little church at this Diace. May God keep them faithful till the end of time. While at this meeting we gave out an appointment for the Gross S. H. and Bro’s E. and Geo. Fleenor filled it, and they held two nights and reported three at the altar. I must report that God has captured the whole country with this precious truth. We hope to return some time this fall and hold meetings at different places.

We are now at Tampico, holding meetings in the school house. One soul at the altar for pardon and one baptized in the name of Jesus. We expect to close Thursday night, June 1st, and go to our homes. I hope to remain at home until June 8, and then with my family go to the Grand Junction camp meeting. Dear Bro. F. Fleenor will go along. God is using the little church at Tampico to shed his light in other places. Dear Bro. Baker (a German brother whom God set free last fall while we were here ) is preaching the awful truth to his German brethren. The Fleenor brethren are full of holy fire and zeal and are in the work as much as possible. We enclose much holy love and esteem with thanks to all the dear people who so kindly supplied all our temporal needs while with them in the above meetings. We remain your brethren on the advance in the Lord and fully sanctified just now.

Dear Saints of God and Trumpet Readers, Greeting: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. I am confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you, will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. I am truly glad this morning, that I can report victory on the Lord’s side, and that he is keeping us and fulfilling his promises unto us. I left my dear family at home the 16th of May, and arrived at this place the 17th, gladly meeting Bro. and Sister Rupert for the first time, also Bro. Daugherty and the dear saints at West Point. Oh praise God for the sweet fellowship that exists between his saints. Though they may never have met before, yet they feel that they are one. We held a few meetings in private houses. Two were saved and two followed the Lord in the ordinance of baptism, by Bro. Rupert. We then erected the tabernacle at North Wales, a place of some over a thousand inhabitants twenty-two miles north of Philadelphia, located on the P. & R. railroad. We commenced meeting the 20th in the name of the Lord Jesus. Things looked somewhat dark. Where the sons of God assemble, Satan also presents himself, but in this case he went on before and stirred up the people against us, causing such a prejudice that those that desired to come were suspicious. One of the Methodist members went to the brother that had granted us the ground, on which to locate the tabernacle, and said we were of the devil and tried to influence him not to let us locate on his ground. May God save the poor man and all others that have been fighting holiness since we have been here.

After the meeting had progressed a few evenings people came out to hear. Some to hear the singing and some to hear the gospel while others came for curiosity. The next step the devil took to hinder the work of the Lord was to stir up the baser sort of the town to disturb the meeting, but thank God, by the protection due us by the law of the state, the disturbance was quelled after the arrest of four young men who were given a hearing and bound over to the county court under bail. God has given us a free country, and ordained laws by which we can be protected in the true worship and preaching of his gospel. Brethren do greatly err when they see the cause hindered and meetings disturbed by the ungodly, and do not take steps to quell it. In some localities the brethren are afraid to take steps for protection. The toughs scare them out by threatening them with private injury, if they have them arrested. Bro. Roe and I held a meeting in Cass Co., Ind. over one year ago. The brethren there were under a yoke of this kind. The boys threatened to burn them out if they had them arrested. The result was that saints that went to that place were stoned, egged, and even their lives were endangered, when, if the brethren had taken it in hand to see that the law was enforced, order would have been the result and souls saved. Brethren, if we are Christians in the full sense of the word, we are law abiding: if we stand by and see the law violated and make no effort to enforce the law we are guilty, not only that but disloyal to the government.

Well I have wandered a little from my report, but the will of the Lord be done. Last Saturday evening in the midst of the meeting we were wonderfully surprised and astonished, something similar to that recorded in Acts 12:12-16. Just after the close of the preaching, in came Bro. Achor into our midst praising the Lord. We could hardly believe our eyes. One brother said he thought he came down through the top of the tent. Oh praise God! what joy it is to meet one unexpectedly that has been so far away. We had been praying for him, supposing he was over in Europe, but behold he was in our midst. The Lord wonderfully blessed him in preaching to a large congregation on the Sabbath. May the Lord bless him. Sabbath afternoon between preaching and the evening we had altar service. Seven came forward, some for pardon and some for sanctification. Most all of which we believe received the desire of their hearts. Others we believe are convicted that this is the gospel way. May God bless dear old Father and Mother Anders, for their kindness to us in letting us occupy their ground for the tabernacle and a welcome to their home. Though they have their names in the Methodist sect, we believe they are saved of God, and know the voice of the shepherd which says, “Come out of her my people.” Rev. 18:4. Also “From such turn away.” 2 Tim. 3:1-5. Ministers and singers are badly needed here in the East. The harvest fields are great and gleaners are scarce. Do not think, that this is out of the world. Jesus says, Go into all the world. Bro. and Sister Rupert are expecting to start for England about the 14th if the Lord wills. If the Lord wills I expect to go to the Grand Junction camp meeting. May the will of the Lord be done in all things.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I will write my testimony for the first time. Praise God, I can say this evening that Jesus saves me from all sin, and keeps me by his mighty power. I lived an up and down life in Babylon in the Baptist sect for several years. But I heard this evening light; and I read in Rom. 6:6, that our old man could be crucified with Christ, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. I was willing to make a complete consecration and to give my body a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which was my reasonable service. I learned that it was the will of God, even my sanctification, for God hath not called us unto unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. Well, glory to Jesus, he saved me, and saved me out of the sect. I praise the dear Lord for deliverance. The people do not want to hear sanctification and holiness talked. I desire the saints to pray for me, that I may live humble and submissive to all God’s holy will.

Dear Saints of God: I feel impressed of God this morning to give in my testimony for the first time, with the true children of God. Last winter while I was searching the scriptures through idle curiosity the Lord pointed out Rom. 12:14 to me, which set me to thinking (for which I do thank the dear Lord), and as a consequence I began to look up the definition of holiness, as that seemed to be a prerequsite to seeing the Lord, He showed me that it meant to be sanctified and live free from sin. I had a willing heart and had long desired to live closer to Jesus. But I belonged to a sect and had an ambition for worldly approval, and consequently the carnal nature had control. I began to make my consecration, and while upon my knees asking the Lord to show me what more I had to consecrate, he told me I would have to preach, and then began the struggle. And it was the greatest struggle of my life. But bless God, I gained the victory and died the death, and claimed the promise. Glory to Jesus! He sanctified me and cleansed me from all unrighteousness. I am no more my own, for I have been bought with the precious blood of Jesus. I am now all on the altar; and in obedience to my promise to God, I have been preaching the pure gospel, and have seen several souls saved, for which I give God the glory. Oh I do thank God for his Spirit, which will lead us in the way of all trnth. I am teaching school at present, and have three weeks yet, and then, glory to God, all contracts will have been filled, and I will be ready to go out in the Master’s work on a life contract. I ask all the dear saints to pray for me and my family.

Dear Brethren and Sisters in Christ: Grace be multiplied unto you. I feel led of God to write my testimony. This morning finds me saved, sanctified and healed by the mighty power of God. To him be all the glory. Oh I do praise God for his wonderful saving, keeping and healing power. He has wonderfully healed me of toothache and neuralgia. I had it for about a week and I kept asking God all along to heal me, but it seemed my faith was not strong enough to grasp the promise, although I have been healed many times before. So I wrote to a brother to pray for, me, and the same evening at prayer meeting at our house the saints all prayed for me, and the Lord did heal me. My faith was wonderfully tried, but I clung to the promise and I was healed. But in a day or two I worked in the garden and caught more cold, and it came back on me so bad I did not know what to do. So I sent for a dear sister to come and pray for me, and the Lord heard our feeble prayers and healed me again. The devil tried to make me believe I was not healed, but praise God who giveth us the victory through Jesus Christ our Lord. I am fully determined to trust him for all things, let come what will. I write this all for the glory of God, and my only desire is to live low at Jesus’ feet. I ask all the dear saints to pray for me that I stand firm.

Rover, Tenn., May 5, 1892.

Nannie Lou, daughter of W. R. and Emma Lamb, was married to J. C. Duncan, Dec. 19, 1889, and departed this life Oct. 16, 1892. After three weeks illness of typhoid fever, she crossed over the river of death to be with Jesus. A few days later the Lord took her babe also. She leaves a husband, one child and a host of friends. She was singing and praising God for twelve days through her suffering, and urging the people to pre- to meet the Lord.

Mary Abby Killmer was born in Erie, Pennsylvania, July 19, 1819, and died at her her home at Kibbies, Mich. May 30, 1893; aged 73 yrs., 9 mo., and 30 days. In the year 1838 she was married to Enoch B. Gillaspie, with whom she lived 46 years. To them were born 14 chiidren, 6 girls and 8 boys; eleven of which still survive her, and all were at the grave except one daughter, who now lives in the west. Mother Gillaspie was converted to God in her childhood and has spent a long life in his service, always taking an active part in Christian work wherever her lot was cast. Four years ago she left the M. E. sect, and came with the saints of God and walked with them till age and disease confined her to her home. To her children and all who knew her she has been an example of faith, hope, and assurance of that bright immortal life beyond. God bless the bereaved children, and save those who are not saved. Funeral services held at the Linsey school house by the writer. Text Jonah 4: 3.

Dear Sister Hattie Newcomb, wife of Hiram Newcomb, departed this life to be with Jesus. She was born Jan 26, 1858, and died May 26, 1893. She was married to Hiram Newcomb June 3, 1875. She gave her heart to God in the winter of 1871 and has been a faithful Christian ever since. She came out into the evening light last winter and was sanctified wholly. She leaves a husband who is also saved, and five children to mourn the loss of a loved companion and mother. She was ready and willing to go. Called her family around her bed the day before she died and told them that she would have to leave them, that she was going home to her Savior. May God’s richest blessings rest upon this dear family. May his grace be sufficient for them, in this their greatest trial. Funeral services by

Somerville, Ala., May 24, 1893.

Bro. V. V. Brindley was born Jan. 26, 1872, and died May 23, 1893; aged 21 yrs., 3 mo. and 27 days. He professed entire sanctification Oct. 15, 1892 and continued to testify to the cleansing blood of Jesus until his death. He died of typhoid fever with direct and violent involvement of the brain. He leaves a father, mother, and seven brothers, with an espoused, to mourn his departure. The father and mother are members of the Baptist denomination; the father being a minister. May God help them to see the error of sect confusion and flee out of the midst of her, and home to Zion. I believe they never heard the saints preach except on the funeral occasion. None of his brothers have ever professed salvation. May God help them to take warning. The Lord enabled us to present the gospel of salvation to a large and attentive audience, warning the people from Matt. 24:44 to be ready for death and the judgment, Heb. 9; 27, by separating forever from a life of sin; and by perfect obedience to God be found of him in peace, without spot and blameless. 2 Pet. 3:14. May God help his kindred and friends to heed the word of God, and with the departed secure a home in heaven. Services in the grove.

The Use of Divine Healing.

_____

EVERYTHING in the divine economy, is for a wise purpose, and is consonant with the highest reason.

Before entering upon the objects of divine healing it might be well to enquire briefly into the uses of affliction. And this must be approached by first considering the author of afflictions. Peter’s testimony of Christ is as follows: “Who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.” — Acts 10:38. Here afflictions are ascribed to the devil, to his oppressive power over human flesh. Doubtless, they are usually the result of violated natural laws through evil lusts and carelessness, infused by the devil. His object in these afflictions, of course, is to break down and destroy these temples of God. But God also has a permissive will and purpose in men’s afflictions. By these afflictions upon his children he has taught them many profitable lessons, and brought them nearer to himself, and they have also thereby learned to hold more sacred and obey more carefully the laws that God has enacted in the realms of nature. Doubtless souls have been saved, and others arrested from apostasy by the strong hand of God in affliction. There have been instances where God has evidently sent physical judgments upon men. But these are exceptional. Usually disciplinary suffering is the effect of violated organic laws. But whatever gracious fruit sickness may bring forth, it is not to the glory of God that his children should continue long under its prostrating power. If a more perfect conformity to natural laws is needed, or if spiritual lessons or advancement in divine grace is the divine object in permitting those attacks, let the soul draw nigh to God, find out his good purpose, and reach the same. And when this is accomplished the divine use of the afflictions terminate, and the afflictions should also. But should no special blessing be contemplated, and the suffering be only the oppressive work of Satan, why should it be protracted? “Is there no balm in Gilead?” Is not our God able to deliver his children out of all trouble and afflictions? “Wherefore then should the heathen say, Where is their God?” Let it be known that God is indeed with his people, and is a present help in every need.

What good then can the Lord accomplish in the exercise of his healing power? We will only mention a few things.

1st. Health is the normal state of man, an important condition of his usefulness. Deprived of this he is unable to answer the end of his active existence. He is not qualified to meet the duties he owes to himself as a man; to his country as a citizen; to society as a neighbor; to his family as a husband and father; nor to his God as a Christian. Not that he cannot be a Christian in prostration, but that he cannot fill the sphere of active Christian labor. Instead of filling life’s duties in these several relations, he is a care and burden to others. Hence it is to the glory of God to heal his children, that Satan be defeated, and they be able to bring forth fruit unto God.

2d. By the exercise of his healing power, in answer to prayer, the Lord manifests unto his creatures his precious attributes of sympathy, compassion and love. Behold his heart of love toward suffering humanity! “And Jesus went forth and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.” — Matt. 14:14. Blessed be his dear name! Wherever his eyes behold the oppressed of Satan, beneath the heel of sorrow and affliction, his hand of love was stretched forth to heal, and his kind heart overflowed with words that soothed the troubled soul. Had he passed through this vale of sin-inflicted wretchedness with no eye to pity the suffering, no tears to shed with the bereaved, and no outstretched arm to raise up the sick, could men have learned that his heart is kindness, and his Father’s name love? Ah, the healing mercies of the Son of God are needful to reveal the character of that compassionate God, who only can bind up our wounds, heal our sorrows, and sweep away all our diseases.

And who will say that his crucifixion, resurrection and glorification have stripped him of his power to heal the sick? Nor do the glories of his Father’s throne, and the lofty praises of the angels in heaven turn away his pitying eye from the pangs that oppress his frail brethren yet in the flesh, nor prevent their humble prayers from reaching his ears. Thank God! “He knoweth our frame and still remembers that we are dust.” He yet walks with his church, showing forth even ‘greater works’ than he did while incarnate. He is near to all them that call upon him, and his tender mercies are over all. While on earth he turned no sufferer away unhealed, and his heart is no less “touched with the feelings of our infirmities” to day. All must admit that he has the same power to heal. Then why not do it? The person who could stand by the side of an awful sufferer, who is imploring help, and having all power and authority to remove the same by a simple touch and would not do it, what would be thought of such a person? Would not all pronounce his a heart of stone? And do not all who confess that Christ is able to heal his saints, and yet will not answer their prayer in doing so, virtually ascribe to him this same cruel, unfeeling heart? Do they not, in direct opposition to the Word, picture him as an unsympathizing high priest, whose heart cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, and not even with the most intense pain and sickness? O my Lord and Savior, how thy name is dishonored, and thy holy character slandered by the false doctrines of men! How the cursed unbelief that has come down from the dark ages of confusion, and spread forth from the pulpits of worldly wisdom, and godly ignorance, robs our blessed Redeemer of his loveliness and tender compassion!

It is not enough to say that he exhibited his love to suffering humanity while in the flesh, and that is sufficient. Is it sufficient to prove that a man is good and holy now because he gave evidence of that fact in past years? If Christ cannot or would not heal the sick to day, would it not give place for doubts that he ever did, and that those miracles on record were forged? Surely this, or the ridiculous idea that he has changed? Though men may intellectually credit the works of Christ wrought over eighteen hundred years ago, to really impress their minds with his true character of love, they need to see the same manifestations in the present ever living Jesus. If he be indeed the divine Savior, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, to day and forever,” he must continue to confirm his love to his saints; and so he does. And he that denies it must shut his eyes and stop his ears from seeing and hearing the gracious works of God, and seek to rob him of his power, or of his very essence — love.

3d. We will notice one more point in the use of divine healing. In the name of the Lord we affirm that the supernatural healing of the bodies of men, is one of the Lord’s permanent factors in the salvation of souls.

During the personal ministry of Christ, nearly all who believed in him were constrained to do so by the miracles they saw. Yea, “Many believed on his name when they saw the miracles which he did.” — Jno. 23: Those miracles were usually those of healing.

The same was true of the apostles’ labors. About five thousand souls were converted to God through the preaching of a half sermon, which was backed up by the healing of a poor beggar at the beautiful gate of the temple. See Acts 3 and 4:1-4. But since divine healing has been repudiated in the dark ages of the past, it has taken, on an average, about five thousand “fine sermons” to half convert one soul.

After spending the night in prison, and being tried by the high priests the next day, the apostles Peter and John were permitted to return to their own company and report the good time they had enjoyed, after which they all bowed down and prayed as follows: “And now, Lord, behold their threatenings, and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, by stretching forth thy hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.” — Acts 4:29, 30. These inspired apostles knew how to pray for boldness and authority to preach the word; namely, they wanted the hand of God manifest with them, confirming the Word with miracles, especially the healing of the sick. Do we not need the same boldness and authority to day? A ministry that is void of the divine seal of healing power is a poor, lame excuse for the messengers of the Almighty God.

Observe the use the Lord made of a case of healing at Lydda. Peter there “found a certain man named AEneas, which had kept his bed eight years, and was sick of the palsy. And Peter said unto him, AEneas, Jesus Christ maketh thee whole.” You see, Peter did not heal the man, but Jesus did. “And he arose immediately. And all that dwelt in Lydda and Saron saw him, and turned to the Lord.” — Acts 9:33-35. A very happy effect indeed. And we have seen men and women melt down before God and get saved in these last days, on seeing the love and power of God displayed in instantaneous healing.

“The day of miracles is past” is a disgusting apology for an unsanctified and powerless ministry. It is much more congenial to the flesh to adopt this falsehood than to mortify the deeds of the body, die to all pride, selfishness and worldliness, and thus become pure in heart, and filled with power, an instrument through which God can bless suffering humanity.

The apostle Paul did not entertain the popular view of miracles so often heard from the faithless pulpits of our age; namely, that “they were only intended to confirm the divinity of Christ and his word, hence passed away with the apostles. “For,” says he, “I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ hath not wrought by me, to make the Gentiles obedient, by word and deed, through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God.” — Rom. 15:18, 19.

To make the Gentiles obedient to God, he regarded as the divine object of miracles. So long therefore as sinners are to be subjected to God on earth, the original object of healing yet remains, and of course the gracious gift continues in the church, even until the end of time. To this end the Lord commissioned supernatural healing in connection with the preaching of his word to the end of the world. Mark 16:15-18. And for the same reason he set the gift of healing in the body, his church, as. a permanent agent in the plan of salvation. 1 Cor. 12:9. But observe he only puts those gifts in his own church. Hence when men went from the divine fold and the faith once delivered to the saints, to human organisms, these signs did not follow. And to excuse their impotency the falsehood was coined that God had recalled that gift. But since the return of the holy remnant to the real Zion of God, the church of the firstborn which are written in heaven, all these primitive gifts are found yet just where God placed them, and they are again being used to the glory of his name.

Dear Readers of the Trumpet: I do thank God that I have the privilege of again testifying to the salvation of the Lord Jesus, that I am still saved to the uttermost. Have been saved about nine months and have enjoyed more real pleasure in this time than I did in all my past life, and am now in my eighteenth year. The Lord saved me from worldly conformity, and I can truly say that I am dead to the world and its pleasures. I find in Jesus a satisfying portion and and a help in every time of need. I do thank God that he has a people that are willing to forsake all to follow Jesus. I am so thankful that I ever heard the true gospel preached and that I was willing to come to the terms laid down in the Word and be saved. I belonged to the M. E’s about two years, but I find a real possession to be much better than a mere profession in this world. I am glad that I can truly say that Jesus now is all to me, and I have no anxiety to go back into Egypt, but am perfectly satisfied to dwell in Canaan. Dear ones, pray for me and for the work in the south.

Dear Saints of God: May God bless you all. I was saved and sanctified last Oct., when Bro. Stover held meeting in the tabernacle, and to day I can say the Lord has kept me by his power. Praise his clear name! I can say I am free from all man-made churches or sects, and secret societies. I am out on the Bible line for God, willing to do his holy will. God has called me to work for him, but my body is so afflicted I cannot go out till God heals me. I wish I could tell the whole world just how I am anchored in Jesus. I know God has healed me before of a disease I had ever since I was a child, and of other afflictions, for which I do give God all the glory; and I know he will heal me again. This is the first time I have written my testimony. I request all the saints of God to pray for me, that God will heal my body, that I may get out in the work. I am saved and sanctified and under the blood.

Dear Saints: I am praising God for salvation that saves me from all sin. Praise the Lord! I am dead to the world and its pleasures, ready to do the Lord’s will in all things. When I was fifteen years old I decided to make heaven my home. But I had always been taught that we were sanctified at death. I began to ask God for help. It seemed to be a hard struggle for me to do right. Sometimes I felt that I was on the Lord’s side, but I began to doubt whether I had any salvation. I had used so much tobacco and snuff that my system was poisoned. My health was so bad that I did not think I was long for this world. I was not then ready to meet God, but my prayer was that my last days be my happiest. Praise the Lord they are! When Bro. Warner came and preached holiness I saw that without holiness I could not get to heaven. I decided to live a holy life. The devil tried to make me believe that I could not give up my tobacco, snuff and coffee. But praise the Lord forever, last October while I was picking cotton the Lord sanctified me wholly. All glory to Jesus! I am saved and kept by the power of God. I am saved and tried, made white in the blood of the Lamb.
