Can We Fall?

Continued from fourth page.

A great many people speak to us about

THE CLAY AND THE POTTER.

Rom. 9:21. “Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump, to make one vessel unto honor, and another unto dishonor?” We are the clay, and God is the potter. Come now, and let us go with Jeremiah down to the potter’s house, and hear the word of the Lord.

Jer. 18:1-6. “The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words. Then I went down to the potter’s house, and behold, he wrought a work on the wheels. And the vessel that he made of clay, was marred in the hand of the potter. So he made it [the same lump] again, another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it. Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, [here is the lesson] O house of Israel, cannot I do with you [make you over again] as this potter? Saith the Lord, Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in my hand, O house of Israel.” Now read verses 7-12; also Gen. 6:5-9, and Jonah 3d and 4th chapters. We can see plainly that it depends greatly upon the way people live, and what they do in this world whether they are saved or not. If they get spoiled (marred) after God creates them, he is able to make them over again, for which he has made provisions in the plan of salvation. And all that remains is for men to put themselves into the hands of God as the clay in the hands of the potter.

“Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions [have got spoiled].” Eccl. 7:29. The people have gotten into such a marred, or spoiled condition, that God has arranged a plan to regenerate, or recreate them. Eph. 2:10. “For we are his workmanship, created [again] in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God before ordained, that we should walk in them. Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is [made over] a new creature [creation], old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” 2 Cor. 5:17. “If a man therefore purge himself from these, [all sin and ungodliness. 2 Cor. 7:1. Tit. 2:12.] he shall be a vessel unto honor, sanctified, and meet for the Master’s use, and prepared [not to sin, but] unto every good work.” 2 Tim. 2:21.

Now, let us conclude by noticing a few texts showing that we must obey the word of God. If we get him in our favor by obeying him, we will be elected sure, because God is the majority. “If God be for us, who can be against us?” Rom. 8:31. “We are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit [any kind of sin] such things. Who will render to every man according to his deeds.” To them who by patience continue in well doing, seek for glory, and honor and immortality, eternal life. But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath. Tribulation and anguish upon every soul of man that doeth evil; of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile. But glory, honor and peace to every man that worketh good; to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile; FOR THERE IS NO RESPECT OF PERSONS WITH GOD. For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law, shall be judged by the law. (And we which have the gospel shall be judged by it. Jno. 12:48.) For not the hearers of the law shall be just before God; but the doers of the law [of Christ] shall be justified. Rom. 2:2, 6-13. “But he that doeth wrong, shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: AND THERE IS NO RESPECT OF PERSONS.” Col. 3:25.

“Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth, I perceive that God is no respecter of persons, but in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.” Acts 10:34, 35. “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter; Fear God and keep his commandments: for this the whole duty of man.” Eccl. 12:13. ‘‘But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only; deceiving your own selves.” Jas. 1:22. Read Rev. 22:14. 2 Thess. 1:6-9. Tit. 2:11. The grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared unto all men? But this is false if God only offers grace to save some men.

Heb. 2:1—3. “Therefore, we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. For if the word spoken by angels was steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward; HOW SHALL WE ESCAPE IF WE NEGLECT SO GREAT SALVATION?

What is the Trouble?

_____

AS we look about us over the great mass of religious professors of to day and see the gross darkness on every hand, and the great lack of faith and power among the majority of those who claim to be the children of God, the question arises in our minds, What is the trouble? Can it be that such are serving the living God, or are they serving a dead god? Let us investigate some for a little while, and probe about and see if we can find what is in the way. We begin by examining a few professors of religion. They say they believe in God, believe the whole Bible; but ask them if they believe that a person must live free from sin in this life, they are at once shocked at the idea, and are ready to say that no one can be holy in this life, no one can live without committing sin. But we open the Bible, and there we read, 1 Jno. 3:8. — “He that committeth sin is of the devil; whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin. Then we turn to Luke 1:75, and we read that we are to live in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life. You notice the words that “all the day’s of our life” we are to be holy.

That cuts off the doctrine that we cannot be holy until just about the time we pass over the river of death. That cuts off all living in sin, being a child of the devil, etc., every day of our life. Many people spurn the idea of teaching holiness and living the same, But they have only to turn to Heb. 12:14, and there they will find that without holiness no man shall see the Lord. “Oh, but our preacher says, ‘We cannot be holy in this life.’ ” We care not what your preacher says. The good book tells us that in that day we are to be judged by the word of God, and not by what some so- called preachers have said. “O yes, but ‘he that saith that he liveth and sinneth not is a liar and the truth is not in him.’” My friend, where did you learn that passage? “Why, I have heard my preacher read that many a time, and tell us that from the pulpit.”

There is where the trouble lies. You have been listening to the preacher instead of the word of God again. When the whole matter is summed up, it will be found that in nine cases out often the preachers are responsible for the lack of faith and power among the religious class of people to day. That passage just quoted concerning “He that saith he liveth and sinneth not,” etc., is not in the word of God, although you hear it quoted by almost every holiness fighter. People are ignorant of the word of God to day because the preachers have failed to do their duty. They have fed the people on college bread instead of the bread of life until truly the words of the prophet are now realized as present truth wherein he foretold that there would be a time of famine, not of bread and water, but of the hearing of the word of truth. There is not one minister out of every one hundred in the various denominations who are preaching for a salary who dare preach the whole word of God for fear they would lose their job. They dare not contend for the faith once delivered unto the saints as the apostle commands should be done; and for this cause those who are really hungering and thirsting for the truth, go unfed and starving as it were, and become spiritual dwarfs. If there were more God-sent preachers, and all other mouths stopped, a great reformation would be realized at once.

But, thank God, the time is here when God has ministers whom he is raising up all over the land and sending them forth to preach the everlasting gospel in all its purity, fearing not the face of man; who dare to preach the whole truth at any cost, even though they are burned at the stake. This great reformation has begun. God is sending forth his messengers to gather together the elect, to search out the remnant. He is preparing his bride, the church, for his coming. “But, where do they get their commission?” some, one may ask. They get it from the same source the apostles received their commission; the commission is the same. It is to go forth into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature; to heal the sick, cast out devils, etc. And Jesus says, Mark 16:17, that these signs shall follow them that believe! What a blessed privilege to know that we are among them that believe. And he says, Jno. 15:7, “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will and it shall be done unto you.” 1 Jno. 5:14, 15 says, “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he heareth us; and if we know that he hear us, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.”

Then in James 5:13, 16 we have the instructions given to those who are sick among God’s children, and it tells just what kind of means to use. It does not say, send for a doctor and give the sick one a dose of medicine, but it says send for the elders, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up, etc. There are hundreds of other precious promises just as strong as these. For whom do you suppose they were written? For the apostles alone, and people of ancient times? Nay, verily: if that were the case it would be better for us to burn our Bibles, and spend our time studying moral philosophy, or something else that would do us more good.

Why spend our time praying to a God that has only left promises to those who died hundreds of years ago. But we can truly praise God that we have a Bible full of promises to us, and a God in heaven, who is able to fulfill them. He is the very same Jesus that he was in olden times; he has the very same power. He gives the same commission to his ministers. He offers the same privileges and salvation to those who will serve him. The sinner has the privilege of forsaking his sins, confessing them, believing oh the Lord Jesus Christ and receiving pardon, and thus becoming a child of the living God. The believer has the privilege of offering himself a dying sacrifice according to Rom. 12:1, and receiving the abiding Comforter, which, will enable him to live a holy life, free from all sin, with the love of Jesus abounding in his soul continually.
