A Short ..rmon in Verse.

—:o:—

Why to gain a sinner’s pardon,
Must a sinless victim die?
Why should Christ assume my burden —
Man of God, pray tell me why?
Why can I not trust my Maker,
And thus gain my home on high?

Sinner, you would not believe Him,
Thus untempted and untried;
Finite minds could not receive Him
While possessed with human pride,
But for faith in fellow feeling;
Hence your Lord was crucified.

How could you in common reason
Claim communion with your God
While your life’s a life of treason,
Pressed with sin’s rebellious load?
Could you, would you dare opproach Him
But for Christ’s atoning blood?

But as God, His law fulfilling,
He’ll rescind the law of death;
And as man we know He’s willing
For He once drew human breath;
And of love He gave assurance
By His ignominious death.

..nner, Christ has fellow-feeling —
As a man He loves thy soul —
..s a God His love revealing,
Power to make thy spirit whole;
..st thy Savior, friendly sinner,
Let His love your hearts control.

..s a fellow man then trust Him;
Though this … you have not seen,
..e has left a pr..us promise
That you may be pure within;
..hy not try this God-man’s promise
And be purified from sin?

… He asks is mortal training
..n His own pure moral school;
… His promises sustaining
When we bow to His own rule;
..st thy Savior, friendly sinner,
Heavenly light shall fill thy soul.

… has giv’n a pure example
How to worship, walk and live,
..d if we His footsteps follow
He the Comforter will give,
..a, a crown of endless glory
Through his grace we shall receive.

..st of all He went to Jordan,
Heard the baptist’s plaintiff cry —
.. because he needed pardon –
..or His sins He did not sigh;
… for sins of many millions
Here on earth who have to die.

..at by faith and true repentance,
Trusting his atoning blood,
..n should follow his example,
..nd be reconciled to God —
… his Father gave assurance
By that voice, the voice of God.

..d the holy Dove descending,
..inner, this was done for you,
… for Him, He had the Spirit
..lways meek, and pure and true,
… to show you how to follow
..im, that you be pure and true.

..en you’ll have His own free Spirit —
..ot of party nor of strife —
… of His own boundless merit
..e made pure in heart and life,
… the uncreated Spirit
..ree from all sectarian strife.

..ist went down into the water
..s He went into the grave,
..ed in white, His priestly raiment,
That He might a pattern give
His future resurrection,
..nd His mighty power to save.

..ough the chilling frosts of winter
..ingered still on Jordan’s wave,
… us bore his cross in meekness
..ielding to the watery grave,
..ing there a bright assurance
..of His willingness to save.

… we would be his disciple,
We his cross must surely bear,
How him in all his teaching,
His afflictions we must share;
..r His shame in lonely triumph
If a crown of life we’d wear.

..nner! Christ’s now interceding!
Sinner! time is flying fast,
..nd for you he’ll soon cease pleading,
Soon your transient life must pass;
..ust a life of endless darkness
Seal thy dreadful doom at last?

While the Savior’s interceding
Why not trust him as a friend?
..oon for you He may cease pleading,
Soon your pilgrimage must end:
..nd your doom forever settled
By that long rejected friend.

..othe thyself in sunlight whiteness,
Follow thy redeeming Lord
Neath the Jordan’s crystal brightness,
Kneeling to His holy Word;
When Christ’s bride is robed in whiteness
All her gifts will be restored.

Why not robed in angel’s raiment
While on earth as Christ’s own Bride,
Seen by John in lonely patmos,
Far beyond the ocean tide;
Imitate your Savior’s burial
Who for you was crucified.

We would go with you to Jordan,
Witness your baptismal now;
Bear with you the Christian’s burden —
Friendly sinner, why not now?
Clothe thy self in angel’s raiment,
Though the thorns may crown thy brow.

TRUTH MAKES US FREE.

—:o:—

THEN said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. — John 8:31, 32.

Those Jews seem to have believed on Jesus as the Mesiah, but had not yet with their hearts believed into Him as their personal Savior. But if they continued in His Word, which is the foundation of faith, they would soon reach an experience in their soul, which would be a positive knowledge of the truth they were believing, and that knowledge would make them free: free from their sins, free from doubts and fears, and all distressing uncertainties. Faith put forth on the sure promises of God, turns to knowledge, in the act of believing. Thanks be to God for the glorious fact declared by the Lord Jesus: “Ye shall know the truth;” and this precious fact also, “the truth shall make you free.’’ These two glorious facts are only fully experienced out side of all babylon confusion, on the “sea of glass that is mingled with fire,” i. e., on the clean Gospel foundation, where we have overcome the beast, and his image, and his mark, and the number of his name. See Rev. 15:2.

Truth means, or includes, every thing that is pure, upright, and holy, in contradistinction to every unrighteous and unholy element in nature and practice. Hence David said in Psalm 51, “Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shall make me to know wisdom.” The depraved heart is ‘‘deceitful above all things, and despirately wicked.” — Jer. 17:9. Every thing opposite to truth is there. But the pure heart is full of truth and uprightness: the pure heart is a heart of truth, that heart loves the truth, and is wholly committed to the truth as it is in Christ Jesus. And any heart that does not readily and heartily receive the truth is not a pure heart. The law came by Moses, but grace and truth by the Lord Jesus Christ.” The truth having come by Christ Jesus, the heart that is closed to any portion of truth is anti-christ. We mean the heart that is willingly opposed to the truth. Christ said, “I am the way, the life and the truth.” “His name is called the Word of God.” — Rev. 19:13. And “thy Word is truth.” These Scriptures clearly identify Christ and with His Word and Truth. He is the truth, and He is the Word, and the Word is the Truth. Therefore to reject the truth, or the Word of God, is to reject Christ Himself.

Of the corrupt apostate religionists of the present time God charges upon them these awful sins, “They be all adulterers (spiritual fornicators through friendship with the world,) an assembly of treacherous men. And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies; but they are not valient for the truth upon the earth; for they proceed from evil to evil. — Jer. 9:2, 3

This is a true picture of sect babylon, that filthy city, where truth and the Spirit of God, the two witnesses, lie dead in her streets. – Rev. 11.

In transgressing and lying against the Lord, and departing away from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood. And judgement is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter. — Isa. 59:13, 14.

Here as in Rev. 11, truth is fallen in the streets of mystic babylon, spiritually called Sodom, and Egypt, where our Lord was crucified, and still being crucified a- fresh by their ungodly deeds which they carry on in His holy name, professing to be His Church, and the houses of their ungodly festivity, frolic, chancery, and trafic, they have the impudence to call the house of God. “The wrath of God is revealed from Heaven against all (such) ungodliness, and unrighteousness of men who hold the truth in unrighteousness.” “Who change the truth into a lie, and worship the creature more than the creator.”

The true child of God knows the truth, and that knowledge makes his soul free, the knowledge of the truth, and love of truth in a pure heart impart boldness, assurance, and open facdeness before God and all men. An eternal confidence and peace, that excludes all restlessness, and soul fluttering and floundering. Of such it is written: He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid by the terror by night; nor the arrow that flieth by day. — Psa. 91:4, 5. That man walks in triumph through the land, treading the lion and the adder under his feet, having victory over all spirits of devils, doctrines of devils, and creeds of error and confusion. Error makes men narrow, bigoted, and penurious. It shuns the truth as an owl shuns the light of day. That spirit sees no redeeming good in any man that differs with their points of strenuously held tradition. They judge no man by the Spirit of God, nor estimate him as God estimate. They will even acknowledge men saved of God, and yet cast them off for a thing of naught. The Spirit of truth mows the truth, and confesses that knowledge, and yet recognizes the virtues, and loves and enjoys the fellowship of a sincere and honest Christian soul, where error through false education yet holds a prominent place. The man that loves the truth, but knows not yet the truth fully, is equally loved and cherished with the the man that both loves and knows the truth. Therefore the Spirit of truth fears not investigation. If light comes the heart of truth receives and enjoys it. If darkness or error is propagated, the superior light of truth detects it and undisturbed passes it by. The heart of all truth is never disturbed by any thing. All error is too weak to move that heart, and all truth is assimilated and enjoyed by it. So the heart of truth fears not the coming of either truth or error, fears nothing; but “proves all things and holds fast that which is good.” The Spirit of error shuts its victim up in a little dark corner, from which he is afraid to emerge and hear any person not circumscribed by his own creed. The Spirit of truth, however, is only willing to hear until it has proved a man not of God, then his ears are turned away from the lying lips. “But he that is not of God, heareth not us,” testifies the man of truth.

“If ye continue in my words, then shall ye be my disciples indeed, and ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.” Truth came by Jesus, it is embraced in the New Testament. It is principally clasified under two heads. The truth in the promises, and the truth in the commands of Christ. In both these departments of truth the words hold good, “he that is a doer of the Word shall know of the doctrine,” and he that “continues in the Word shall know the truth.” The penitent sinner believes the promise for pardon, and instantly knows the truth of the promise by the conscious experience of pardon. The justified lays all on the altar of consecration, believes for the cleansing blood, and proves that fact by experimental knowledge. So all the promises, of God are made to pass from matters of faith to facts of knowledge. To a certain extent the same is true of the commands of Christ. “He that is a doer of the Word shall know of the doctrine.” The doing of the commands of Christ in the Spirit of God, imparts a positive knowledge of those commands. A command of Christ believed, and then sincerely performed, becomes a commandment known. Therefore saith the Lord, If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. John 13. “He that hath my commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me.” Thank God! we have the commandments of Christ, “know” them and do them. We believe His promises and experience them. Hence we know the truth, and the truth makes us free. Praise God! we also “know that no lie is of the truth.”

CHRIST, THE END OF THE LAW,

OR
Christian Ordinance still in vogue.

—:o:—

THAT Christ was the end of the Jewish or Mosaic law (Rom. 10:4) of ceremonies &c, and the author of a new and Christian dispensation; (Heb. 2-10 chapters) is a fact too well authenticated by the inspired Word and the sacred annals of Church history to have any need whatever of futher proof in this article. And that consequently, all divinely inspired teaching and writing subsequent to that event which made Him (Christ) the world’s Redeemer and the “author and finisher of our faith;” belonged to, or come under, — not the old Jewish or Mosaic dispensation — but the new and Christian dispensation. Under the blessed influence of which, all the victories of the cross have been won, the martyrs shed their hallowed blood, and we enjoy the religious light and liberty that we do today; is also a fact as self evident as the former. This being undeniably the case, it is very plain that all of the New Testament undisputably belongs to the Christian dispensation and is consequently as much in vogue to-day as ever it was. Thereby making it just as obligatory on us to observe the Christian ordinances taught and practiced by our divine Lord and Master as to “repent and believe the Gospel.” Since to suppose as some do, that the Law of Moses with its rites and ceremonies was binding after Christ had died to become its end, is a remote species of infidelity: by the impugning of the efficacy of Christ’s blood to accomplish that for which it was shed. Some writers however (anti-ordinance of course) have, through their failure to recognize in Jesus. Christ the impersonation and attributes of the Almighty God — assumed without the least of divine authority, except in their flexible imaginations, that the destruction of Jerusalem — an historical event which in the very nature of the case could have nothing whatever to do with the subject in question, and which took place about twenty-six years after the crucifiction of Christ — was the end of the Jewish ago or dispensation, the consequent and final overthrow of all ordinances both Jewish and Christian and the commencement of a new Christian era or dispensation. But as this phenominal idea or hypothesis is without the least Scriptural or reasonable substantiation whatever, and is consequently irrelevant to the whole tenor of both Old and New Testament teaching. It is consequently not worthy of a moment’s candid consideration in the light of Scripture, and will deceive none but those whom, it seems, are unable because of spiritual blindness and ignorance read and understand Scripture for themselves.

Nor is this all. To reach the very height or exuberance of human folly, these blinded teachers do not hesitate in the least to make use of such verses of Scripture as the 14th verse of the 2nd chapter of Col., which speaks of Christ as having nailed the handwriting of Jewish or Mosaic ordinance ceremonies and riles to the cross, as Scriptural evidence of the destruction of Christian ordinances! And that too, mind you, while they are at the same time continually assuming that they were in vogue until the destruction of Jerusalem. The absurdity and manifest contradiction of such leaching is however so obvious as to need no comment whatever. If people can swallow such chaff as this I can not vouch for their spiritual understanding or mental capabilities. They are indisputably the blind being led by the blind, and consequently will, unless stopped and made to see the madness of their career, reach the inevitable result viz, fall into the ditch. But why is it that the advocates of such incongruous conglomeration of self manifactured ideas and notions cannot be made to see the stupidity and contradiction of such false doctrine? Why simply because, as before indicated, they cannot recognize in Jesus Christ the being and attributes of the Almighty God the end of the Jewish dispensation, the author of a new (the Christian) dispensation and the inaugurator of a New Covenant: leaning to their own understanding and following their own conceited ideas: impugning the fidelity of Christ’s own teaching and the Word of God on this subject &c. But where is this matter ever going to end? When shall we ever come to an undersranding in regard to these matters? Not, I trow, until we shall get to where we shall at least cease to be led and guided in such matters by our own infallible (?) understandings; and until we, like one of old, get down before God and cry, “Lord, I know not right from error, but by the Holy Ghost.” And then take God’s Word as enlightened by the Spirit as an end of all strife, “letting God be true and every man a liar.” Until then however we may expect nothing but the babylonish confusion so rife to-day and the teaching for doctrine the commandments ef men. God grant that time may soon come that the present state of affairs may soon and eternally come to a close for Christ’s sake. Amen!

FAITHFULNESS.

—:o:—

THERE is no position in this life so responsible in its character as a watch, man upon the walls of’ Zion, and yet, alas, how little considered. Many enter the sacred office for ease, others for honor, while others choose it as a lucrative profession, who can give no evidence that they were called to bear the sacred oracles of God, and yet they know that it would be a violation of law to carry a U. S. mail bag without being authorized. Such have abounded in all ages as “blind leaders of the blind,” and build with “wood, hay and stubble,” regardless of the soul and its eternal destiny, and move with the popular current in the lodge, sociable, fair and festival in their broadcloth and gold chain, and being so closely allied to the world, of course, will be highly esteemed and loved by his own.” And lest they should offend the more sensitive part of their congregation, they will evade the more unpopular truths, such as repentance and judgment. If a man unfortunately brews his hands in the blood of one of his fellow beings, and is found guilty of murder in the first degree, the law decrees that man shall hang by the neck untill dead. He is returned to the prison to await the day appointed by the govenor of state for his oxecution. His name is heralded over the and and all denounce him a great sinner, and such indeed he is. But here comes the so called watchman under the garb of christianity as an “angel of light,” eloquent in speech, prepossessing in appearance, sociable in his manners, and the height of his ambition is to swell his numbers, not only to increase his popularity, but add to his salarty. At the same time new birth is ignored. They flatter the people in their sins by hundreds and thousands. Are not such soul murderers, and at the day of judgment who will be the chief of sinners; the man who slew one of his fellows, or those who murdered hundreds and thousands of souls? I verily believe that in proportion to the number at the day of judgment there will be as many so-called preachers who shall hear the denunciation, “Depart from me ye workers of iniquity,” as any other class; and while they sink down to the caverns of eternal night the cries of their unhappy victims will no doubt enhance their misery through all eternity as their hands and shirts are dripping with their blood, as their deceivers and murderers. As Matthew Henry says in his commentary, such persons “may die as a lamb, and afterward roar as a lion.” Surely it behooves us to see well to it that we are not found guilty.

During a late visit east in one of the popular churches, a leading man told me they had recently received three hundred and eighty persons into church in one day. I inquired whether they had realized a change of heart. His reply was: “We don’t altogether agree with you Methodists,” supposing me to be connected with that church. The reader can draw the inference, and the day of judgment will disclose the facts. Yours for an uncompromising ministry.

Sidney, O.

Dear Bro. Michels: – God bless you abundantly with all spiritual blessings in Christ Jesus. Amen! I am here at this place holding meeting in the strength of Israel’s God.

Dear Bro., I see your notice in the TRUMPET of the amount due on the subscription, and $5.00 of the amount due that was subscribed is mine. But at present we are not able to pay it. We pray God to put it in our hands speedily. We will send it as soon as the dear Lord blesses us with the means. God bless you and family, and put it in the hearts of the saints that have abundance of this world’s goods and of the luxuries of life, to deny themselves a little at least, and administer to the wants of those that are in need, and to the work or cause of God. For, says the Word, “Whoso hath this world’s goods, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?” God bless you! Amen! He knows my present circumstances, and that I have not the ability to administer to the cause and your help now.

We know of a truth, saints who, if they would, could help to relieve you of the burden of the TRUMPET OFFICE debt and scarcely feel it. Oh my God lead the clear ones to a deeper cansecration for Jesus’ sake. Amen! Your saved Brother.

PERFECTION.

—:o:—

FOR Zion’s sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth. I have set watchman upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night. “Ye that make mention of the Lord, keep not silent: go through, go through the gates, prepare ye the way of the people, cast up, cast up the highway, gather out the stones, lift up a standard for the people.”

Well praise the Lord! that is just what we will do instead of lowering the standard of perfection as some do and bring it down to our own opinion, and say we can make all kind of mistakes; and also be pushed about by the devil just as he will, and then say we have the Holy Ghost through it all. We had better begin to search the Scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life, and they are they that testify of me. What saith the Scriptures? As for God, His way is perfect: the Word of the Lord is tried: He is a buckler to all them that trust in Him. For who is God, save the Lord! and who is a rock, save our God? God is my strength and power: and He maketh my way perfect. — 2 Sam. 22:31-33. Jesus says, “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in Heaven is perfect.” We find in the Word of God, two ways, one to everlasting life and the other to everlasting punishment. In Prov. 16:25, “There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. Yes, the wages of sin is death.” We find in Isa. 35:8, “And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called, The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the way-faring men, though fools, shall not err therein.” Some claim that we are in error in holding that sanctified souls should not be continually in error: and it has also been said that we preach infallibility, that is false; we only hold up the Scriptures, the plain teaching of the Word of God. Now we find in Rom. 8:5-9, “They that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the spirit, the things of the spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any may have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His.” Paul teaches a complete crucifiction to the old man. He says, “I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live: yet not I, but Christ that liveth in me.” Hear we make the distinction between man and the Spirit of God. Man we know is fallible, but the Spirit of God is not. As many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. — Rom. 8:14. Then certainly if we are not led by the Spirit of God, we are none of His. What saith the Lord Jesus: “When the Spirit of truth is come, He will guide you into all truth.” Truth is not error. “The wayfaring man shall not err therein; in the highway of holiness. Praise God!

And he gave some, Apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ: taht we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; but speaking the truth in love, may grow up into Him in all things, which is the head, even Christ. — Eph. 4:11-15. Yes, he is the head of the body, the Church, and He gave Himself for it, that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the Word; that He might present it unto Himself a glorious Church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. Paul says, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit. — Eph 5:14-18. Then listen to His voice and He will guide you aright. I once heard a man preach from the pulpit, that sanctified souls had two minds, one to serve God, and one to be about their work. What saith the Scripture: Whatsoever our hands find to do, to do with all our might, and also what we do, to do heartily as unto the Lord, and not to man. Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. My Brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into diverse temptation, knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience; but let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire wanting nothing. If any man lack wisdom, let him ask of God who giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him: but let him ask in faith, nothing wavering: for he that wavereth is like the wave of the sea, driven with the wind and tossed. Let not that man think he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

Your sister complete in all the will of God.

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

—:o:—

Meriden, Kan.

My Dear Brethren: — May God wonderfully bless you all and fill you with His holy fire. May you be filled with all the fullness of God. Great grace be upon you all! We began meeting in Eudora Kan. the 20th of Feb., had meeting a few nights, and the beast became so enraged because of the wrath of God which was poured on the seat of the beast; they collected their army together and raised a mob against us and drove us from their town. We were there last summer with a tabernacle and a mob tried to destroy the tabernacle and we had to get the marshal. The beast has been turned loose on the saints since that time. Eudora is a town full of beast religion; mostly German people, Roman Catholic, Lutherians. Methodist, and other colored beasts especially Odd Fellows and (bound) Masons. Eudora is a town of about six hundred inhabitance with eight of ten sects; beast worshipers, they are mad on their idols. The Methodist beast shepherd was very mad on his god, and stirred the baser sort. These false prophets of babylon strengthen the hands of the wicked until none return from his evil ways. Poor blind idol worshipers! May God open their eyes to see their lost and ruined condition. The excuse they made for running us from their town was this: while I was there a man who belonged to one of the names of blasphemy, (sects) a member of the Odd Fellows, was taken sick; and before we came, testified publicly he would not take any more medicine: he believed the Lord could heal the sick. From the time and before he was taken sick he knew he was going to die. He would take no medicine for he wanted to go: they sent for a doctor who was a member of one of the names of blasphemy (sects) and Free (bound) Masons. He came, and they persuaded him to take the drugs awhile until he could not swallow any more, then they tried to pour it down him (as I heard) The man died, and left this world in triumph of a living faith; I was with him before he died, read some of the Word of God, prayed with him and he went home happy. Before he died he wanted to go to the river and be baptized and of course the mob would not bear to that; they thought he was out of his head. He had been sprinkled, but renounced that and wanted to be immersed. I told him as we could not baptize him God would save him; then he was quiet. They accused me of his death and raised a mob and closed the town against us, and threatened to have us arrested for murder. O beloved Saints, pray for the Saints at that place. We went seven miles Southwest and had a few meetings; two were added to the Church by the Lord. We had an ordinance meeting, a glorious feast to our souls. Bro. Orrick was ordained Elder. We commence meeting here to-night. Pray for us. I remain your free saved Bro. all on fire. Hallelujah!

Dear Brethren: — God bless you. Meeting lasted at Spencer school-house eight days. Three reclaimed, ten converted and ten claimed the glorious gift of the Holy Ghost: most of them as bright as I ever saw. The first night we gathered at a house and got to singing and talking, which lasted till three o’clock. We had some pentecostal showers. Hallelujah! Some infidels are under conviction. It was near town, so we thought best to move to town where we could have more room. Pretty good interest begun. We had ordinance meeting and ordained one deacon who is full of the Holy Ghost. There are some expecting to go into the work of rescuing the perishing. At the proper time they should be ordained. The country is stirried for the Gospel. Your Bro. sanctified by the Holy Ghost.

Dear Brethren and Readers of the TRUMPET: — I praise God, not only for pardon and sanctification, but for the keeping power. Amid all that we have to contend with, and meet in preaching the Word, God lifts us above all, and shows us in many ways the necessity of standing firm for His cause. In our labors, the past winter, wherever we have been we have bad much to meet on account of the terrible conduct of J. C. Fisher and Alice his wife(?) especially in Pennsylvania, even before his separation from his real wife their (J. C. Fisher and Alice Davis) actions were such as to bring a reproach on the cause; some of the witnesses in the Fisher devorce case testified to the fact that he conduct of sister Allie Fisher in Penn. was such as to hinder their progress in the work; if they had reference to Satan’s work in separating man and wife, perhaps sister Allie was in the way a little; but if the reference was the work of the Lord, as near as I have been able to learn it was the other way; the conduct of other parties was such that the work of the Lord was hindered; and there is no telling when or where it will stop. In Penn. every one who spoke to us in regard to the matter spoke of sister Allie with the greatest respect and confidence, while of some others they spoke with no respect for their actions. As the case may be we found it very difficult to accomplish very much in the way of soul-saving. The people every where acknowledge the truth, but at the same time are very suspicious, and lack confidence in us, being strangers to them. Notwithstanding we have the assurence that we are on the right track, the straight, narrow, bloody, Gospel track that Jesus Christ travelled when here on earth and now is sitting at the right hand of God in glory and looking down to see how we are walking; therefore let us walk straight, and avoid all appearance of evil. This salvation work is of God. David’s murder and adultery, and Solomon’s ungodliness did not destroy the work of the Lord, neither can J. C. F. destroy it. True it may have seemed to put a sort of quietus on the work, but the FACT IS this salvation work has come among us in these last days and it has come to stay in spite of the devil. Well we do praise God with all our heart that God has used us in strengthening the things that remain.

After separating from Bro. Mayne at Pittsville Pa., we visited the brethren at Mechanicsville and Henderson, and started for home on Monday the 20th of Feb., and arrived on Tuesday 21st.

Dear Brethren: — We greet you again in the name of Jesus after so long a time being silent. Hallelujah to our God forever and ever! We are saved to the uttermost just now. Praise God! We have been laboring with our hands (and thereby, praise God, we have been able to keep the wolf from the door) but glory to Jesus we have not ceased to rush to the battle at every opportunity, wherever He led us, and not without victory on the Lord’s side at all times. Glory to Jesus! Feb. 11 I left my home in Paulding Co. with our dear Bro Linens Kilpatrick, and went several miles to the Northeast, to the vicinity of Bro. Richardson’s and held three services in which the Lord wonderfully helped us to preach the Word to small, but attentive congregations of hearers. We pray God to give them the much needed light, and save them that want to be saved. From there we were called home to the bedside of a dear little Nephew, whom the dear Lord soon called to Himself. We then went (Feb. 16, in company with dear Bro. W. G. Schell) to Melrose Ohio. We found the Church wonderfully burdened with some who was walking disorderly, and striving for the mastery and rejecting the Elder of God and causing division. Hallelujah! we applied the rod: preached the Word which proved to be quick and powerful, discerning the thoughts and intents of the heart. God enabled us to discern between them that served Him and them that served Him not. Some that had been effected by the unfruitful works of darkness, came to the altar on Sabbath and made their consecration, and two of them were sanctified wholly and the rest were not entirely clear. We pray God to lead them in making the proper consecration to obtain the baptism of fire for Jesus’ sake. Amen! The principle ones causing the division refused to be squared by the Word, privately affirming that they were right and the saints all wrong; but they were cut off by the Spirit and Word. The saints of God should not forget the commands in God’s Word — to withdraw themselves from every one that walketh disorderly. — 1 Thes. 3:6. And to mark them that cause divisions and offences, contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them — Rom. 16:17. We pray

the dear Lord to have mercy on those that have fallen by the delusions of the devil, and, if possible, save their souls. Amen! We are here in the name of Jesus to be used for His glory. Meeting began here the 23d. Bro. Schell is with us and we expect Bro’s A. J. Kalpatrick and S. L. Speck in a few days to help in the work at this place. After we are done here we expect, the Lord willing, to go to, or near Wapakoneta Ohio and open fire on the enemy; and from there to Willshire Ohio if the Lord wills. We are holding meeting mostly in new places; let all the dear saints pray for us and the work of the Lord in these parts.

Your Brother and sister saved now, free from babylon and all the works of the devil; filled with the power of God, rejoicing at all times; patience in tribulation, in every thing giving thanks; sanctified made white and tried. Hallelujah to God!

Dear Brethren: — May God bless you, and all the dear saints every where for Jesus’ sake. Amen! O hallelujah! I am out on the Bible Holy Ghost line, clear from evil spirits, renouncing all the works of the devil, and my soul is on fire with power and glory of God. I am still moving out in the will and order of God with the eternal victory in my soul. May God keep you all from the powerful delusions of the devil for these are indeed dangerous times in which we live; for if the righteous scarcely be saved, where O where will the ungodly and the sinner appear. We have been having quite a shaking time since the camp meeting; many who are dear to my heart are going back and denying their Lord. They would not obey God and walk in the light that was given through dear Bro. Warner, and some of them seem very sorry that we are on the same line. O hallelujah! we know we are of God. He that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error. Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God; because many false prophets are going out into the world. Beloved, it is time for us all to have spiritual discernment, for there is so much counterfeit in the world that the people can’t tell, without spiritual discernment, who is of God and who is of the devil. Well, praise God, they that know God in His fullness know Him every where. There are some here still under the delusions, not in outward manifestation but deeply seated in the heart. Some of them we have renounced, and some of them think we have blasphemed the Holy Ghost by renouncing the works of the devil. While my heart runs out for dear Brothers E. A. Lewis, Wm. Rhodes, Jacob Cruts, Charles Cruts and J. W. Oneel for their salvation and complete deliverance, yet I must renounce all the works of the devil. Saints every where, pray for them. Bro. Lewis is going around and says he is working the people up to the ordinances; he says the exhalted spirits have cast off many of the weak ones, has gathered some of them together and had one ordinance meeting which was of the devil; for some that partook was using tobacco while others were under the delusions. We know that his works are pernicious and destructive to the Church of God. May God open his I eyes and bring him back again to the fellowship of the saints.

“I will follow Thee my Savior,
Thou didst shed Thy blood for me;
And though all men should forsake Thee
By Thy grace I’ll follow Thee.”

Dear Saints of the Living God. — Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and our Savior Jesus Christ.

We are saved and well, being kept by the power of God unto salvation, ready to be revealed in the last time. Praise God for ever!

From Yellow Lake Bethel, we went to the Haun School-house and held services for a few days. There were four or five consecrations at this place. From this place we went to Beaver Dam, and commenced a meeting in the name of the Lord, on the 6th. of Feb. which continued six day’s. There were several consecrations at this place. There were quite a number of saints that attended services here, and the most of them are strong in the Lord, having been anointed with the Holy Ghost. The meeting closed with ordinance services, in which about ninty engaged, in commemerating the death of our Lord Jesus Christ.

We left Beaver Dam in company with Bro. J. U. Bryant, Bro. R. Gast and Wife, and sister May Shelly, for Randolph Co. Ind., where we arrived in safety Feb. 14, and the same evening held services with the saints in Bro. Grow’s neighborhood. Amen! Your saved brothers.

Dear Brethren: — O my heart so longs to have some of God’s ministers come here to this place, with their heart filled with perfect love for God and man. I have been sick for over two weeks; am better, but very nervous. I do not have much faith in doctor’s medicine for myself, for Jesus is my Physician. God’s Word says, “If any among you are sick, call for the Elders of the Church; and if ye have committed sins they shall be forgiven.” That is the way I believe God will heal those who put their whole trust in Him; and I believe that is all I need, is more faith in the blessed Son of God, and a ready mind to do His will. There are no Elders here to call on, so will you please pray for my complete recovery both spiritual and physical. O how I long to see some of God’s dear saints. I cannot walk boldly over the waves yet, but I do believe Jesus will keep me from entirely sinking till His time shall come. May God lead who he shall, choose to come here in His own good time; not only for myself, but those around me also. God bless you.

Dear Brethren: — May God bless you all and lead you by His spirit in all things. Amen! My testimony this evening, is I am settled more firmly on the Rock and more fully decided for God than ever before. I do praise God for the light I received at the Camp Meeting; and for delivering me from the delusions of the devil. Hallelujah to His name for ever and ever!

O I do praise God for sending brother Warner and saints here; the entire meeting was a real feast to my soul. And such Heavenly music, how it thrilled my soul. Praise God for the evening light! Oh how I see the great need of living to the light. God gives us. For if we reject light and it becomes darknes, how great is that darkness. God’s people are being wonderfully tried in many places. But glory to God when we are crucified with Christ, He is more for us than all that can be against us. O praise the Lord for the real satisfying portion I have in Jesus; and for the way He is blessing our souls, and healing our diseases, supplying our needs, and giving us the victory. I am studying God’s Word and want to take it for my guide. Pray that God give me the real Spiritual understanding of His Word.

I do praise God for the TRUMPET; and for the sweet fellowship of the saints of God. How the love of God burns in my soul as I write. O if poor sinners did but know the blessedness of salvation, they would surely taste and see that the Lord is good.

“Now I’m resting, sweetly resting,
In the cleft once made for me;
Jesus, blessed Rock of Ages,
I will hide my self in Thee.”

Your sister saved, and kept by the power of God.

Dear Readers of the TRUMPET: — I praise God to-day for real freedom in Jesus. Glory to God! I do feel the presence of the sweet loving Savior in my soul every moment. I have been saved about eight mouths, but during the first six months I advanced but little, owing (perhaps) to a little pride in my heart; but glory be to our God for ever and ever, there is no pride in my heart now: and during the last two months I have not only been walking for God, but glory to Jesus, I have just been running up the shining way with glory and victory in my soul. I have victory over this present world, also over the flesh and the devil. Hallelujah to God! Oh I do know it is so sweet to just live for God alone, and I am putting in all of my time (yes every moment) serving the living king of glory and learning of His precious will. Glory to God! Pray for me dear ones that the wonderful flame of fire that God has put in my soul will burn brighter and brighter all the time. I do know just now that the very God of peace sanctifies me through and through. Praise His holy name! I intend to have all God has for me: for this way of perfect, full and free salvation is so blessed. O glory! hallelujah to God!

O then dear sinners why not you
Accept this blessed way,
And seek the joy that it will prove
To find the narrow way.

Dear saints pray God to keep me very low all the time, and that I may keep the fullness of God in my heart. Amen! I am your saved sister under the blood.

Gear Saints: — I feel it would be to the glory of God to write my testimony. I do know better than anything else that I am saved through and through and kept by the mighty power of God. Glory to God! I know when I was six years old the Lord for Christ sake pardoned all my sins. I was very small but, glory to Jesus, I knew that the Lord forgave my sins. Well praise the Lord, when I was eleven years old the very God of peace sanctified me to do His will, and glory to Jesus, I am sanctified just now. I am only thirteen now, but glory to Jesus the Lord does reign and rule in my heart, and where the Lord is, the devil will not come. Glory to Jesus! he has left me and when he comes around I just say get thee behind me satan, and praise the Lord he goes. Well praise the Lord, I intend by the help of Almighty God to go through on the Bible line, and some day wear a crown in glory. Pray for me. your sister in Christ.

I am praising God for complete deliverance from the traps of the devil. Glory to God in the highest for complete victory through our Lord Jesus Christ, over the world, the flesh, and the devil! To all the dear Readers of the TRUMPET greeting: – I feel that it would be to God’s glory for me to write my testimony. I do praise God that I am saved from all sin and the abominable sectisms and cisms of the world. I do bless God that he is able to save and keep us, and organize us in the Church of Christ. Hallelujah to Jesus! I praise God for the victory that overcometh the world, and the flesh, and the devil, and every thing that is not of God. My husband and I have spent about three months in Ill. where we were preaching the awful Word of God, with glorious victory on the Lord’s side. Souls were converted and sanctified, and some healed; but there are so many of the people there so rapped up in sect babylon religion that they will not see the blessed evening light. But we said, in the name of the Lord Jesus, that the sect pens should fall: for God says, “On this Rock will I build my Church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Well, bless God! I am built in the true Church of the living God. I am saved, sanctified wholly, and kept by the mighty power of God, through faith unto salvation. Amen!

Dear Brethren: — My experience to-day is, I am being kept by power Divine. I am leaning on Jesus alone. During the past two years of my Christian experience one prop after another has been taken from under me until to-day I am standing firm on the solid Rock: and the rain decended, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house and it fell not: for it was founded upon a Rock. — Matt. 7:25. Trials and temptations come, but this house is going to stand because it is founded upon the Rock. Believing alone, we stand upon the sand: but believing and doing, we stand upon the Rock. I am determined to walk in the narrow way. “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” “If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son, cleanseth us from all sin.” There is redemption in the blood of Christ from all sin. I expect by the grace of God to prove faithful unto the end. I want to constantly abound in the work of the Lord, ever be strong in Him and in the power of His might. I love this precious narrow way, this cleansing ourselves of all ungodliness and worldly lusts. It pays to come out and stand straight for God. I am expecting God to make it better yet: it is better on before. God is surely with a few of us here, He took us out of different sects and has never forsaken us in the most trying times. We make it so hot that crooked holiness professors can not stand us any better than the popular sect professors. “O magnify the Lord with me and let us exhalt His name together.”

Yours, saved and trusting in God.

Dear Brethren: — By the great mercy of God I will let you know that I am saved, and ever trusting in him who is able to help in time of need. Mr. Pepple and myself came here last fall to spend the winter. We axe still here; but if the Lord is willing we expect to go back to Indiana in two months from now. I must say there is but little enjoyment to be found here. There are people here from all parts of the world, and there are many different sects; but O how cold are their meetings. May God have mercy on those poor blind perishing souls, and find a way to reach them that they may come to this light and hear the deep truths of God’s Word. When I came here I was in hopes I could get some of these people to be willing to have some of the saints come and hold meeting awhile; but I soon found it impossible. I think they would be apt to say, “These that have turned the world upside down, are come hither also.” They would most likely be ready to cast them into prison, like they did Paul and Silas. Each sect think their church is the best; but of course that is natural in all sects. I gave some the GOSPEL TRUMPET to read, and some of them told me we cannot live without sin, and they also claim we can not be perfect in this world. I told them the Bible teaches, “Be ye therefore perfect even as your Father which is in Heaven is perfect.” “And he that sinneth is of the devil.” May God ever bless all the dear saints and TRUMPET readers.

I praise God for what he has done for me. Pray for me that I may ever be faithful. Your sister saved through Christ.

Dear Brethren: — I feel it my duty to write my testimony. I do not have the chance of attending meetings here as I am the only saint in the town: but praise the Lord for the peace and joy I have in my heart that is unspeakable. I praise and thank God for the healing of my body. He is my comforter in all times of need. I praise and thank God for calling me out in this marvelous light. The devil tried hard to persuade me that it would be the end of my happiness; but praise God, I am happy beyond measure. I am rooted and grounded and established in doing the will of God. The devil sets some big traps for me, but praise the Lord, His grace is sufficient to save me at all limes. Pray for me that I may always be found firm and steadfast for the Lord. Amen!

Dear Saints: — I feel led to write my testimony to the Trumpet I am saved, sanctified and kept by the Mighty power of God. I do praise God for salvation full and free, that saves to the uttermost I have sweet joy and peace in my soul, which the world can not give neither can it take away. Praise His Holy Name for ever and ever! The Lord has wonderfully healed my body since I gave myall to Him. The Lord gave me strength to attend meeting every night while Bro. W. B. Grover held meetings here. I do praise God for ever sending him here. I was serving God and walking in all the light I had; but when I heard sanctification preached I consecrated myself to God, and He filled my soul with the Holy Ghost. Praise His name! He keeps me day by day free from sin. It does my heart good to read the testimonies of God’s dear ones in the TRUMPET. Pray for me that I may ever stand firm. Your sister saved, sanctified and kept by the power of God.

Dear Brethren: — May God bless and keep you all walking in this glorious light is the prayer of my heart to day.

It has been a long time since I have written a testimony for my blessed Savior. But to day finds me still clinging to Jesus. O I do praise our God for a salvation that raises us far above this world of sin. My determination is to live for Jesus while I am spared in this world. The Word says, “From the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” And these words came to my mind to day.

O how sweet to dwell with Jesus,
Far above this world of sin;
Where no evil can befall us,
If we always look to Him.

Look to Him our blessed Savior,
He who died upon the cross:
O He shed His blood to save us;
Yes to cleanse ns from all dross.

From your sister in Christ. saved and kept by the Blood of our dear Lord,

OBITUARIES.

—:o:—

Died: — Feb. 17th 1888, near Henderson Mercer Co. Pa., Mrs Margaret Elder, wife of Bro. Alexander Elder, aged 71 years 10 months and 14 days. When she heard the Gospel preached in the pulpit, she had an honest heart and was willing to walk in the light. She gave herself to the Lord who saved and sanctified her wholly, to which she testified in the public congregations, and was baptized, showing to the world that she was willing to follow Jesus in all things. She continued a faithful witness for Jesus. She was strong in the faith and praised God in the midst of affliction, and said: “He doeth all things well.” She was very anxious to go, and prayed earnestly for the Lord to come and take her home, which He did.

But is she dead? no, no, she lives,
Her happy Spirit flies
To Heaven above, and there receives
Her long expected prize.

Methinks I see her joyful stand
Before the God of Heaven;
He smiles, she enters Zion’s land,
And her reward is given.

Sister Elder leaves a husband and six children to mourn her loss. Funeral services were held at the M. E. meeting house. Bro. A. B. Palmer from Bangor Mich. preached from Prov. 11:8, to a large congregation of relatives and friends,

In robes of innocence and love
Her happy soul is dressed;
And all the angel hosts above,
Rejoice to see her blessed.

Farewell, dear friend, again farewell,
Since we shall rise to thee,
And when we meet, no tongue can tell,
How great our joy shall be.

OBEDIENCE TO GOD’S WORD.

—:o:—

FOR Moses truly said unto the fathers, A Prophet, shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever He shall say unto you. — Acts 3:22. Now we see in God’s Word that there were many prophets through which God worked mightily: but none like Moses till Christ. And why was Christ like Moses? Because Moses was the mediator of the Old Testament and Christ of the Now. Now Christ was like Moses because he was a mediator and so was Moses. Moses said that we should obey that Prophet that would be like him in all things whatsoever he should say unto us. Now we have not only the commandments of Moses, but Matt. 17:1-5 says, “And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James and John His brother, and bringeth them up into a high mountain apart, and was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. And behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. Then answered Peter and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, one for Moses, and one for Elias. While he yet spake, behold a bright cloud overshadowed them; and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye Him.” This same prophet (Jesus) says, “If ye love me, keep my commandments; and I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter that He may abide with you forever, He that hath my commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me; and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father; and I will love him and will manifest myself to him.” We hear the majority of the people of to-day say that we do not have to do all that the Bible or this prophet said: saying, That Jesus knew that we could not do all that He commanded. But God from the beginning taught man that he should obey Him in all things, and says: Behold I set before you this day a blessing and a curse; a blessing, it ye obey the commandments of the Lord your God. — Deut. 11:26, 27. Oh glory be to our God. Jesus says, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. If we are the children of God, our Father, and love Him, we will keep His sayings. Jesus does not recognize any one to be His brother and sister and mother only them who hear His commandments and do them. For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. — Matt. 12:50. Luke 8:21 says, “My mother and my brethren are these which hear the Word of God and do it.” Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. But who os looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. — James 1:21 22, 25. And it shall come to pass, that every soul which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people. — Acts 3:23. Jesus says, Not every one that saith unto me Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of Heaven; but he that, doeth the will of my Father which is in Heaven. To hear that prophet or to do the will of the Father is to obey the Gospel. The apostle Paul says, “To you who are troubled, rest with us when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from Heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire, taking vengeance on them that know not God and obey not the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.” To obey the Gospel is to do what Jesus says in His Word; and this is His commandment that ye love one another, for love is the fullfiling of the law; and when you receive love you receive God, for God is love, and when He takes possession of the soul it is an easy matter to keep His commandments, for they are not grievous; and he that keepeth His commandments dwelleth in Him and He in him, and hereby we know that He abideth in us by the Spirit which He hath given us. O glory be to God! we do not keep His commandments just because He says so, but it is because we love to do them. Hallelujah! God does not withhold any good thing from them who love Him: for he that watereth shall be watered also. Freely ye have received, freely give. The reason the dead sea is dead, is because it is all the time taking in, and nothing going out: that is the reason why so many are bold and backward, they want to be fed but do not want to feed. The Apostle says, When ye ought to be teachers, ye have need some one to teach you. Now the last commandment in God’s Word we find in Rev. 22:17, “The Spirit and the Bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say Come. And let him that is a thirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” Now if you have received this water, you must say, Come to the fountain and drink; and while you water the little lambs, God will give you a drink. Glory be to God and the Lamb forever and ever! Amen!

PERFECT LOVE.

—:o:—

ALL Christians have a measure of love. They could not be Christians without this. But the love is often a mixed love, immature or adulterate. Perfect love is not a new kind of love, but the old love purified, matured, expanded until it becomes,

“A sea of love
Where all our pleasures roll
The circle where our passions move,
The center of the soul.”

By this perfection, love becomes the sovereign of our hearts and lives; and by it we live and move and have our being, as we live by God, so do we live by this love, for God is love. By it we are brought into a spiritual region.

Where all our soul’s desire
Is fixed on things above;
Where fear, and sin, and grief expire,
Cast out by perfect love.

Perfection in love, like perfection in other things, is of a severe and tedious process, severe and tedious because we are unwilling to be rid of those things which obstruct it.

The secret voice invites me still,
The sweetness of the yoke to prove,
And fain I would, but though my will
Seem fixed, yet wide my passions rove;
Yet hindrances strew all the way;
I aim at thee, yet from thee stray.

The glad climax may be reached in a blissful instant, and the crowning exercise of faith in one royal moment; but the steps leading thither are often painful, marked with tears and riven hearts; along the way marked by the steps of Him, who though he were a son yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered.

Perfect love is an angelic state, a thing of poetry or feeling, not made up of ecstacy, fancy or flowers; but is earthly, homely, and practical — not confined to camp-meeting raptures. Its perfection is in character and conduct, in being and doing. It is implicit, studied and unstudied obedience, for “whoso keepeth His Word, in him is the love of God perfected.”

Perfect love belongs to flesh and blood is for common every day, every body’s use; it is very brotherly, “If we love one another God dwelleth in us, and His love is perfected in us.” Perfect love is Christ- like, not in creed, sentiment or saying only, but in loving and living. It lives like Christ lived. It not only reflects His image, but reproduces His character and lives over His life, “Herein is our love made perfect, because as He is, so are we in this world.”

Perfect love is not only practical in its ministries, but it quiets and soothes: destroys the slavery of fear, gives holy boldness in view of the judgment, and gives the earnest and foretaste of the heavenly life; for, “there is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”

Cardonia, Ind. Dear Brethren: — I am led by the blessed Spirit of God to testify to the goodness of God to me. O praise the name of Jesus for the victory I have in my soul just now: I am saved to the uttermost. Oh hallelujah to His dear name. I just feel like telling the dear saints how God is keeping me in the paths of righteousness and peace. When I was first saved I looked at others for examples; but praise the name of Jesus, He has shown me that I must not do this and my soul said amen! God is settling my soul deeper and deeper into Himself. Oh the sin and darkness of this town exceeds any place I ever was in. Oh that God could get the people to see their awful condition. As soon as we begin to tell them the evil of sects, they are immediately stirred. The Word says, “If there come any unto you and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, nor bid him God speed; for he that biddeth him God speed, is partaker of his evil deeds.” Praise the name of Jesus! By the help of God I shall not bid them God speed nor receive them into any house. Your sister saved, sanctified walking in the light of God.

Dear Brethren: — God bless you in this New Year. I am still moving on and the Lord is with me, and I praise His holy name that I am saved, sanctified and kept by the power of God, ready to be revealed in the last day. It makes my soul rejoice when I hear those precious songs sang,

“I am reigning, sweetly reigning
Far above this world of strife;
In my blessed loving Savior,
I am reigning in this life.”

For I am rising with Christ in all our tribulations. Praise His holy name for ever and ever! Your sister in Christ.

Praise the Lord for His wonderful manifestation of power he bestows upon them that are saved of the Lord. I feel led of the Lord to write and let the saints know what the Lord has been doing for us in this place. Glory be to Jesus! We commenced a protracted meeting here in the name of the Lord with wonderful success. Brothers Wm. H. Miller and Jacob Roush preached to the people in power and in the demonstration of the Holy Ghost, and much good was done, for which we glorify God. It was one of the best meetings we ever had at this place: it was held at a private house. There was much prejudice among the sectarians against us; but God gave us the victory over all evil spirits, for which we praise his holy name. There were five or six converted and one or two sanctified. Praise God! It was a glorious meeting, God’s little ones were wonderfully settled down in Christ; it was a time long to be remembered. O glory be to God forever and ever! Well I am saved sanctified and kept by the power of God, ready to be revealed in these perilous times.

Dear Trumpet readers: — I do praise God for salvation that saves and keeps me, and for the freedom we have in Christ. It is almost three years since the Lord spake peace to my poor soul. It was fuorteen months that I had to stand the cursing and profane language of my husband, and all the time asking God to save him from hell; and the Lord did call after him and gave him a thorough cleansing from his bad habits; and now he is praising God all the time day and night, and sometimes he gets to shouting so that it is hard to get any sleep: and the Lord called my oldest daughter, and I pray God that she may always prove true to her Savior for He is able to keep all who trust Him. Dear Saints: — My testimony is that I am saved by the blood of Jesus. Praise His holy name! I am so glad He ever called me and took my feet out of the mirey clay and placed them on the solid Rock, Christ Jesus. I ask an interest in the prayers of all the saints that I may ever stand firm in doing my Master’s will. Your sister saved in Christ.

Dear Brethren: — I am saved from all sin and walking in the true light of God, and my name is written in Heaven. I praise God for full and free salvation that saves me just now. Oh how I do praise God that he called after me when I was going the downward road to ruin, and has placed my feet on the solid Rock, Christ Jesus, where the gates of hell shall not prevail against me. Oh how I praise God for the straight Word of God, and that God has a few names even in this place who are Jesus for salvation! I can only pray that God will send some one full of the Holy Spirit of God to warn sinners to flee from the wrath to come. Oh praise the Lord! He has healed my body and saved my soul, and His praises are continually in my mouth. I praise my God that He is able to save to the uttermost all who will come unto Him. He has saved my soul completely from all sin and pride: His precious blood has washed it all away. I care nothing for the foolishness of this world, for it is all vanity and vexation of spirit. I ask an interest in the prayers of the saints that I may ever hold up the blood-stained banner of truth to a lost and ruined world. Your sister saved, sanctified and kept by the mighty power of God from all sin, and glorifying God in all things.

Dear Brethren: — I wish to acknowledge that I have not done right for which I ask all you forgive me. All wrongs done to you I will make right, as fast as God gives me means to do it with. Praise God for saving my soul from the devil. Glory to His name for salvation that makes a man honest. The 1st of January God sent conviction to my heart, showing me that I was not of God, but of the devil, and telling me to repent; which I done and God for Christ’s sake forgave my sins. Then I presented my body a living sacrifice and God sanctified my soul and body. Glory to His name forever and ever! Dear saints of God, as we are here without any help to hold up God’s truth, we ask you all to pray for us. When we tell people they must live without committing sin, the devil just howls: but by the grace of God we will stand for God and His truth.

Dear Brethren: — We feel led of the Lord to write our testimony to the TRUMPET. We are saved and walking in all the light we have. Praise the Lord! We are having prayer meetings here every Wednesday and Sunday nights at the house of Bro. O. P. Allen. The Lord meets with us, fulfilling His promise that where two or three meet together in my name there I will be in the midst. We are still saved from the filthy use of tobacco, tea and coffee. We have not had any preaching here, from any one from a distance, since Bro. Warner was here two years ago last June. Some are still clinging to Jesus. Bro. Allen has been corresponding with some of the ministers, but no one has yet come to help us. If it is the Lord’s will we earnestly pray that He will send some of His ministering servants to our rescue. Pray for us. Your Bro. and sister in Christ.

Dear Brethren: — The Lord leads me to give in my testimony. I praise God for complete salvation, and victory in my soul just now; for a salvation that saves me from all sin, committed and inherited. I love to give God! all the glory for Saying my soul. Five years ago, God for Christ sake forgave me all my sins, and afterwards wonderfully sanctified my soul, and took me out of babylon, and took babylon out of me. All glory and praise to His name forever and even! for the real gift of the Holy Ghost, the sanctifier. Jesus said unto His Apostles, if I go not away the Comforter will not come. Glory to His name! His promises are yea and amen to all that will believe; you know His word says the promise is to you and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. Hallelujah to our God! that took me in a poor sinner, and made me rich through His wonderful goodness to me, saves me just now. Praise His name forever and ever! Pray for me that I may be faithful, and at last meet Jesus with all the saints in glory.

Dear Brethren: — I feel led of the Lord to send in my testimony this morning; I am saved just now. Praise God! I know that I have been bought with a price, and have been born of the Spirit. O praise the Lord for salvation full and free, and for the sweet peace I feel in my soul; I am all on the altar this morning, for Jesus to use as He sees fit; willing to become any thing for Christ, or to do any thing for Him. When the Lord called after me I was apoor sinner, but I listened to His call and He saved me from every thing contrary to His will; I give up all the fashions of the world. Glory be to Jesus! He gave me back my health and strength, once more, and also saved and sanctified my soul. Praise God for the light that He has given me, and by the grace of God I will let it shine before this world. Dear sinners let me entreat you to come and taste of the goodness of Christ. He has done so much for me that I can never repay Him; and He is no respecter of persons, so He will do as much for you if you will only let Him. I am standing on the solid rock Christ Jesus. Your sister saved in Christ.

Dear Brethren: — I feel that God wants me to testify for Him through the TRUMPET once more. He has done wonderful things for me, and not for me only, but for all those who have partaken of this living water. Oh glory to God! I feel like pressing on toward the prize, which I shall gain by and by: what is it if we gain the whole world and lose our own soul? I do feel glorious in my soul this morning, to know that I have made my peace with God.

Beloved, “think it not strange concerning the fiery trials which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: but rejoice in as much as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.” I know that all who live straight for God shall suffer persecutions. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation; for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to them that love Him. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering, for He is faithful that premised: and let us consider one another to provoke unto love, and to good works. I know God’s grace is sufficient to take me through all the fiery trials. And who is he that will harm you if ye follow that which is good. Glory to Jesus! there is nothing that can harm us. Be patient therefore brethren unto the coming of the Lord. I am so glad that I have forsaken all to follow Jesus. I am on the altar which sanctifies my soul.

“I now have the victory,
My faith is complete,
I came for the cleansing
Low down at His feet.”

How glad I am to know that my Redeemer lives, and has washed my sins away by the precious blood of the Lamb. Oh how awful it is to see those go back who once did enjoy the fulness of salvation: how can you ever escape if you neglect so great a salvation. O come and seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while he is near. Your sister under the blood to do God’s will at all times.

Dear Saints: — Grace be to you, and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins that He might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God our Father: to whom be glory forever and ever! Amen!

Dear ones, I am still praising God for complete salvation from all sin. I am kept by the mighty power of God unto salvation, ready to be revealed in the last time. Praise the sacred name of Jesus! I do praise God that He has delivered me from this present evil world: He has chosen me out of the world, therefore the world hateth me. The worldly sect members hate to hear me tell what great things God has done for me: nevertheless I mean to blaze it abroad yet more and more. Praise Jesus! “I mean to tell to sinners round, what a dear Savior I have found. ” Oh my blessed Savior is so precious to my soul to-day: yes, all the time. His salvation is in my soul as a well of living water, springing up into everlasting fife. There is only a very small company of us in this place, but we are standing firm for God. We have put on the whole armor of God that we may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all to stand. Praise the blessed name of Jesus!

“I’m leaning on His loving breast
Along life’s weary way;
My path illumined by His smiles,
Grows brighter day by day;

No foes, no woes my heart can fear
With my almighty friend so near.
I know His sheltering wings of love
Are always o’er me spread;

And though the storms may fiercely rage,
All calm and free from dread,
My peaceful spirit ever sings
I’ll trust the covert of His wings.”

Your sister saved, sanctified, made white and tried. Amen!
