Prove Him.

_____

Oh how blessed is the promise,
“Come and I will give you rest!”
I have come, yea, and have proved Him,
And my soul has found sweet rest.

I have cast all care upon Him,
Knowing that He cares for me;
And I’m learning the sweet lesson,
What it means God’s child to be.

All my troubles and temptations,
All that tends to make me sad,
Has been cast upon my Savior,
And my soul’s exceeding glad.

All my burdens He is bearing,
Every one, both great and small;
And with heart and soul I love Him,
Christ my king, my all in all.

Oh ’tis blessed thus to trust Him,
Tongue cannot my rapture tell,
For a joy that’s everlasting
Doth within my bosom dwell.

__________

ON FAITH OF GOD.

_____

FIRST of all, we believe that there is one God who created and finished all things, and made all things out of nothing. He alone is able to contain the whole, but himself cannot be contained. Have faith therefore in him, and fear him; and fearing him, exercise self-control. Keep these commands, and you will cast away from you all wickedness, and put on the strength of righteousness, and live to God, if you keep this commandment.

ON AVOIDING EVIL-SPEAKING, AND ON GIVING ALMS IN SIMPLICITY.

He said to me, “Be simple and guileless, and you will be as the children who know not the wickedness that ruins the life of men. First, then, speak evil of no one, nor listen with pleasure to any one who speaks evil of another. But if you listen, you will partake of the sin of him who speaks evil, if you believe the slander which you hear; for believing it, you will also have something to say against your brother. Thus, then, will you be guilty of the sin of him who slanders. For slander is evil and an unsteady demon. It never abides in peace, but always remains in discord. Keep yourself from it, and you will always be at peace with all. Put on a holiness in which there is no wicked cause of offence, but all deeds that are equable and joyful. Practice goodness; and from the rewards of your labors, which God gives you, give to all the needy in simplicity, not hesitating as to whom you are to give or not to give. Give to all, for God wishes his gifts to be shared amongst all. They who receive, will render an account to God why and for what they have received. For the afflicted who receive will not be condemned, but they who receive on false pretences will suffer punishment. He, then, who gives is guiltless. For as he received from the Lord, so has he accomplished his service in simplicity, not hesitating as to whom he should give and to whom he should not give. This service, then, if accomplished in simplicity, is glorious with God. He therefore, who thus ministers in simplicity, will live to God.”

The above words are taken from the “Pastor of Hennas,” which was a very highly esteemed work during the second, third and fourth centuries, and was even quoted as scripture.

__________

BE NOT ENTANGLED IN THIS WOULD.

_____

“NO man that warreth, entangleth himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please Him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.” 2 Tim. 2:4. My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight. — St. John 18:36. Thus we get the essence of the true status of the Christian’s duty in this life. We fine men who claim to be saved and sanctified, who are more or less wrapped up with the cares of this world. They belong to political parties and say they expect to practice voting as long as they live. And yet they claim to be enlisted in Christ’s army. Oh that men would live up to the requirements of God’s blessed laws and commands! Such people wonder why their children cannot be brought to repentance, and enlisted in the service of king Jesus. But the reason is obvious and plain. Their home life does not convince those around them of real spirituality in their profession.

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life is not of the Father, but is of the world. 1 John 2:15, 16; and 3:3, 7, — And every man that hath this hope in him, purifieth himself even as he is pure. Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

Thus we learn that we are to be doers of the Word as well as hearers. For “he that doeth righteousness is righteous.” Then again, we find people that cannot forgive their own kinfolks some real wrong, or that their prejudice has fancied was done to them, and having been a soldier in the late war they cannot forgive with a whole heart, their old enemies, but are continually insinuating their hatred for them. Now the Word expressly says, Wherefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them. — Matt. 7:12. “For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will forgive you: but if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Matt. 6:14, 15, 19-21. “And why call ye me Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? But love your enemies and do good, and lend, toping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest, for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned; forgive, and ye shall be forgiven. Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal, it shall be measured to you again. Why beholdest the mote [a very small particle] that is in thy brothers eye, but perceiveth not the beam [a main timber] that is in thine own eye? Either how canst thou say to the brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother’s eye.” Luke 6:35. 6, 7, 8, 41, 2, 6.

This is the language of our blessed Savior and is pungent, plain, easy to be understood and necessary to be implicitly heeded, if we ever expect to reach the mansions above. We learn that the willing and obedient shall eat the good of the land. So let our wills be entirely swallowed up in the sweet will of God. Be not deceived; God is not mocked, for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh (gives way to the lusts of the flesh, keep on using tobacco, etc.), shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit, shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. For the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance; and they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh, with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us walk in the Spirit, in Gal. 5 and 6. And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? For ye are the temple of the living God. As God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. 2 Cor. 6:16-18; 7:1. And the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

John F. Starcher.

__________

WHOLENESS.

_____

According to the etymology of the above term, it means to make whole, entire, complete. This meaning applied to a Christian would mean no more nor less than a whole, complete, entire Christian, being fully saved from sin, both original and acquired, or saved to the uttermost, cleansed from all unrighteousness, all wrong tempers, passions and dispositions, the bent of the soul being changed from a disposition to sin, to righteousness and true holiness. Such a change can be brought about only by the grace of God. Eph. 2:8. — “By grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.”

This is not so much an intellectual change, but a moral, and spiritual change, the soul being brought back to moral uprightness and spiritual communion with its Creator, that existed before the fall. So fully restored to primitive morality as to be enabled to love God with all the heart, and with all the soul, and with all the mind, and with all the strength, and their neighbors as themselves. Love without hatred, peace without rivalry; nothing contrary to perfect love existing in the soul. And because of this disposition of the soul they yield themselves as instruments of righteousness unto God; they no longer walk after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and mind the things of the Spirit. We cannot expect to be made intellectually whole, because we are cumbered with many infirmities that are the immediate results of sin. But the promise is, “My grace is sufficient for thee,” and, “The Spirit itself helpeth our infirmities.”

Every child of God is so far perfect .as not to commit sin. They are the Lord’s, soul, body and spirit, as we learn from 1 Thess. 5:23. — And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” This work begins in justification, in which state the power of sin is broken, the desire to commit sin removed, and the soul passes from darkness into light.

The guilt and condemnation produced by actual transgressions, is removed at conversion, the soul becomes a new creature and breathes a heavenly atmosphere. St. Paul says to all such, “Sin shall not have dominion over you.” Yet the seed of sin remains in the soul, and in consequence of that fact it longs for the cleansing blood. Yea, hungers and thirsts after righteousness.

“For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil,” of which this depravity in the soul is a part. Jesus prayed for its destruction in his disciples, and directed them to tarry at Jerusalem for the refining fire of the Holy Ghost. And when they were all of one accord, in one place, suddenly — not gradually as some say — there came a sound from heaven as a rushing mighty wind. It came from heaven, not by works; and it filled the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:24. This was the answer to the Savior’s prayer, and he not only prayed that the carnal nature might be destroyed in the one hundred and twenty at Pentecost, but for all them that shall believe on him through their word. So there is still efficacy in the blood to cleanse from all sin. “Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.” — Heb. 13:12. This is the completion of the work begun in justification, and is obtained by consecration and faith. Without it no man shall ever see the Lord.

THY TESTIMONIES ARE WONDERFUL.

Psa. 119:129.

Piqua, O.

Dear Saints: I am still praising the dear Lord for what he has done for me. He has saved my soul from that awful pit of hell. I do thank our dear Father that he ever called after me night and day until I was so glad to take him at his glorious promises. Now I can say with a clean heart, mind and soul, I am free from all sin. I see so many that are on the same road I was. I am glad that I ever started in this glorious shining evening light. God’s word says, if the Son makes us free, we are free; and indeed it makes me free and so happy. Praise the dear Lord! Dear brethren and sisters, please offer one faithful prayer to God, that I may be healed of the awful disease of piles. I sometimes am almost obliged to stop working about the house on account of them. I have had the catarrh for about ten years, as far as I can remember back, until now, the dear Lord has healed me of it and some other diseases. I do think there was a cancer growing in my left breast, and the dear Lord healed it when he healed my body. Pray for my dear husband that he may soon come to Jesus and be saved; and pray for my baby two years old, that it may be healed from crying so much, your saved sister,

Dear Saints or God: I do feel led of the Lord to write my testimony. I am rejoicing in the glory of God. The dear Lord does save my soul. Praise the Lord! And I intend to serve him the rest of my days. Oh it is wonderful what the blessed Lord is doing for me. He gives me sweet peace and joy, for which I give him all the glory. I am young in this cause, but I have the determination in my soul to stand firm for God. The hardest for me to give up was my associates, but the Lord has saved me from all worldly things. I have no desire for the things of the world. Oh I cannot praise God enough for taking my feet out of the mire and clay and placing them on the solid rock, which is Christ Jesus. I desire the prayers of all God’s children that I may ever be true to God until the coming of our Lord. I am your saved brother,

Dear Saints of God: I feel like writing my testimony to the glory of God, of a free and full salvation, that keeps me from sin each day. “God forbid, how shall we that are dead to sin live any longer therein?” Rom. 6:2. I do praise the Lord for calling me out of sectism, and making me a free child in Christ Jesus. I do was in the German Reformed sect for five years. When I heard this evening light preached I was willing to accept the truth and take the Lord at his word. I do praise the Lord for taking the pride out of my heart, for I have no desire for feathers, ruffles, jewelry, or any thing that is contrary to the word of God. A few weeks ago I was taken with severe pain in my back, so that I could hardly walk. A dear brother and sister offered prayer and laid on hands, and anointed me in the name of the Lord, and the pain left almost immediately. I give God all the glory and praise. I have consecrated all to the Lord, friends, home and earthly store, to remain his child forever more. Every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundred fold, and shall inherit everlasting life. Matt. 19:29. I do praise the Lord for victory in my soul over the devil and all his angels; and I do know this morning that I am saved and sanctified, and kept by the power of God. Your sister in Christ,

Sarah Dibert.

Dear Saints and Trumpet Readers: I feel much impressed by God to write a few lines to the TRUMPET, thanking God that this evening light ever came to this part of the country. About six months ago we had over here with us a brother from Liverpool. He had not been preaching long before I found he had just the same religion I had wanted for a long time. I have been converted ten years but not sanctified; but I can praise God to day for a free and full salvation that makes me contented in this life. I have been praying for some time before Bro. Daugherty came over here, that my dear Lord would send some one to revive us, for we were neither hot nor cold, and I know the Lord was not pleased with such a class of people as that, for he has said in word he will spew them out of his mouth. Well I thank God that I am set free, for whom the Son makes free is free indeed. I feel I have the glorious light of the pure gospel in my soul. I have the word of God so hid in my heart that I do not sin against God. Praise God for ever! I have been joined to three different so- called churches since I was born of God. I know now that I am in the church of the firstborn whose names are written in heaven. There are a few of us here that are living for Christ alone. I do thank God for this purity of heart; I know my heart is free from sin, so I am now a fit temple for the Holy Ghost to dwell in. May God ever keep us true, with our minds stayed on Him. Please pray for us. From your saved and sanctified sister in Christ;

Mary Harrison.

The rent for hails in that part of the country is very high, and there are many places open for tabernacle where doubtless many souls can be reached. THE PUBLIC DISCUSSION.

_____

Over nine years ago, we were led to announce in the presence of a congregation, chiefly of Adventists, in Battle Creek, Mich., that we would meet any of their ministers on the subject of the law and Sabbath. We repeated the same in our “Questions to Saturday Keepers,” published nearly three years ago. To the last invitation Mr. W. A. Colcord, secretary of their general conference, responded, sending us propositions, which he proposed to discuss in the GOSPEL TRUMPET. But when we proposed to publish the discussion jointly in the TRUMPET and their paper, or meet him in an oral discussion, he declined the investigation on his own propositions.

While in California, about eighteen months ago, we received a note from a friend a few miles north of Paw Paw, Mich., stating that the people there quite generally desired to hear a discussion on the subject of the Sabbath, and that Elder Horton of the Adventist sect was willing to meet us. We accepted the offer. Last May was the time agreed upon. But having been unavoidably detained in Ohio last spring publishing our new song book, we could not then attend to the matter. We offered to do so in June, but that did not suit him. Again, proposed to come all the way from Pennsylvania last fall, but again the time did not suit the elder. So in the providence of God we met the man May 7, and arranged to begin the next night in the Adventist meeting house, six miles north of Paw Paw, Mich. We soon found we were wrestling against legions of devils, “wicked spirits in the air.” Having a regard for poor deceived souls under that dark creed, who would not be able to understand the ways of God, we forbore to openly rebuke the foul spirits, in the name of Jesus, and thus dispel their dark presence. Consequently we had to contend for the faith in the midst of the awful depressing powers of hell. The spiritual children of God that attended, realized the house was a real synagogue of Satan. Though our mental powers were much depressed in such a place, the Lord stood by us and the word of God prevailed mightily over the son of the bond woman. I had offered to affirm both the abrogation of the covenant written in stone, and the establishment of the Lord’s day Sabbath under the new covenant, and thus assume all the proving. But he refused me the privilege, preferring to affirm the validity of the seventh day. This left us under no obligations to prove the first-day Sabbath. Neither had we the time to do so, except by a few texts. When our moderator wished the discussion continued to give me the privilege to establish the Lord’s day, I offered to do so on Monday night at that place, or on Sunday night in the Glendale hall where I had an appointment already announced. He said he was willing to meet me on Lord’s day in their house, but he had heard me announce appointments for that time at other places. So on Lord’s day evening the Glendale hall was crowded with hearers, and many without unable to get in. The Lord helped us mightily in a free atmosphere, to show the glorious sabbath of the soul in Christ, and the first-day Sabbath of the Christian dispensation.

We are thankful to report two good things at the close of this battle. First, the dear Lord kept us perfectly saved every moment, and the more the turbid contents of his heart was stirred up, the more sweet and glorious God’s love and peace filled our heart. Second, the truth of God has done much good in the entire country for miles around. Many are convinced that full salvation is sufficient to sweeten the heart, and preserve in perfect peace and holiness, even in a public discussion. Furthermore, some souls who were in danger of being drawn into the legal trap have their eyes open, and the community very generally are becoming warm friends of the saints of God, and present truth. The man showed no small desire to get out of the whole matter. Wrote us a note on Saturday that.

There is no demand here on the part of the people for a debate. No one cares to have one except Mr. Merchant. I therefore decline meeting you in debate at the place and time proposed.

Yours Truly,

R. C. Horton.

But a friend hearing of this, and desiring the investigation, came right after us; and so we went over in the name of the Lord. And Mr. Horton confessed that he had got into the discussion and had to go through with it; but showed clearly that he would like to have backed out. Well we do not blame him. When men subscribe to a creed that is so utterly perverse and crooked that they are forced to the enormous position that Christ was the mediator on Sinai, instead of Moses; that the ten commandments compose the new covenant, and that Jesus taught no new commandments, and gave no laws during his incarnation, no wonder they shrink from having their creed investigated. The smallest child of God, with an open Bible in hand, is able to confound these priests of the “disannulled” covenant. May God deliver every honest soul out of their bondage, and warn unwary souls against the same.

Dear Children of God, and Trumpet Readers: We are glad to report victory in the name of our king Jesus. We came to this place the nth and held meeting over Lord’s day with God’s little ones. God truly owned and blessed his own in coming together in his name. We now have our temporal business in such shape that we are free to go at God’s command where he opens the way for his gospel to be preached. Any wishing to correspond with me can address me at North Point, Indiana Co., Pa., in care of J. M. Howard. Yours in Christ,

Dear Saints of God: I am happy to report that I still have a real victory over all this world of sin, with a sweet peace in my soul in the narrow way, alone with my blessed Jesus. In my last report I made mention of the meeting that commenced at the M. E. Chapel, April 16. I preached during that week to large congregations; closed on Lord’s day evening. The house was so crowded; had hardly room to stand to preach. Good order and very good attention, and a number of dear souls are in the valley of decision. From there I went to Bro. John Carrol’s school house; held a weeks meeting. There seemed to be the prophecy of Amos 8:11, fulfilled. The people were so eager for the hearing of the word they would come to the house before night, waiting for the house to be opened. The Lord did wonderfully aid in the declaration of his word, for which I give him all the praise and the glory. May the Lord bless the dear people with a real Bible salvation for their kindness to me while amongst them. Dear saints, pray for the people here in Virginia, especially along this mountain. They are a very clever people as a general thing, poor in this world’s goods, but very hospitable. If any place on this earth where true shepherds are needed, it is here. The few that make a profession are burdened, yea fleeced by the “hirelings.” From there I went a few miles farther towards Harper’s Ferry, to the Ebenezer M. E. meeting house. Commenced a meeting on Lord’s day morning. Preached in the evening, also on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evening. Had good order and very good congregations. From there came back and crossed the Shenandoah river, held a meeting at Birchels school house. The doctrine of the Bible set-ins to be new to the people here. They have never heard it in this way. While going from place to place I am reminded of the apostle Paul in Acts 17:18, 19, 20. It is no wonder it seems so strange to the dear people, the teaching they get in Babylon. When a perfect present salvation is preached to them, a freedom from sin, they think it a new doctrine. The Lord bless all the dear saints. Pray for me and the work here, and that the Lord may send more laborers. I preached twice at Howlsville last Lord’s day. Next Lord’s day will preach to a colored congregation, if the Lord wills and then start out on the work again. You have my prayer. All sold out for God,

To all the Saints of God: The Lord bless you all and keep you from evil. We are still in the battle and have not been idle, but holding forth the faithful word in Neb. We are finding more of God’s hungry sheep that have been starving for food. God is opening large fields of labor in Neb. And is filling us with his mighty power to send forth his precious word unto victory. The Lord is opening many doors now in the direction of the general western camp meeting at Auburn, Neb. We do feel that this appointment is of the Lord, and in a good place, in the corner of the four states. Now those that cannot possibly go to the Michigan camp meeting should make arrangements to attend this meeting, for I know by past experience the great benefit we can have by meeting so many of the saints. It will make your zeal a flame. Now we expect to have a line of meetings through Neb. after the Auburn meeting. There is a large field open near Utica, Neb. for a camp meeting in September. We pray the Lord to send many earnest labors. The sects in this country have forsaken their meeting houses in many places, and they open doors now for straight preaching, and we feel glad in our souls for this. God bless all the loved ones, is the earnest prayer of my soul, day and night. Your brother sanctified, soul, body and spirit,

Dear Readers: The Lord is using his church at this for the salvation of some precious, honest-hearted souls, some of whom have for many years been held captive in a strange land.

“By the river of Babylon there we sat down, yea we, wept, when we remembered Zion. We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof. For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song: and they that wasted us required of us mirth; saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion. How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?”

Where could be found a more pathetic description of the state of the utterly homesick, and apparently friendless and forsaken souls who today are “wandering from mountain to hill” and through the dreary desert of modern Babylon. For many there are who have “forgotten their resting place,” until they hear the sweet voice of Jesus speaking through his people, and saying, “This is the way, walk ye in it.” And oh how natural it seems for these weary wanderers to pause and listen (as one who is

Page 3

suddenly awakened from a dream), to the familiar voice of their shepherd. And O how glad they are, when they realize that it is indeed the voice of Jesus; and how willingly they follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth!” How soon they take down their harp from the willows, and “return to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads!” “And I heard a voice from heaven as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder; and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps.” “These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.” “They stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God.”

Within a short time six dear souls have turned their backs on Babylon and have “set their faces as a flint” toward Zion. May God help them to stand firm and faithful unto the end, that they may also meet their God in confidence in that last great day. Praise the dear Lord! He is making up his jewels now, and is writing each name in the Lamb’s book of life. Five were buried with Christ by baptism on the 9th inst., and more will follow. Your brother under the blood, sanctified wholly,

Dear Saints of God, Greeting: We feel led to write a little sketch of our travels and work for the Lord. The Lord wonderfully consecrated my wife and myself down for the work about six weeks ago, and sent us out into the field to preach the everlasting gospel. Were directed by the way of Anderson, where we were joined by Bro. J. C. Hull of Summitville, and held meeting the last Saturday and Sunday in March, where were added to our number Bro. and Sister J. O. Palmer, of Anderson, who had felt for some time the leadings to go into the field. We then went to Markleville where we held several meetings in the name of Jesus, and then went on to Woodsville, where the evening light had never been held up before. Had a great deal of prejudice to overcome and the powers of darkness were very strong. The people had been greatly deluded and deceived by crooked sectarians, but the Lord wonderfully helped his little ones to preach the word and to remove the hindrance out of the way, and to expose their abominations, and to show what the true church of God is. The Lord wonderfully cleared away the prejudice insomuch that there were several conversions and four sanctified and set in the body. Bless the dear Lord! After which we returned by the way of Markleville and held meeting over Sunday, where the little church was wonderfully established in the faith. There were also several consecrations, after which we had a blessed ordinance meeting, the Lord wonderfully manifesting his presence among us. Bless his holy name! We then visited the little church at Windfall and held a ten days meeting in the name of the Lord, in which he wonderfully manifested his power, and five souls claimed sanctification, and many were enabled to see what the real body of Christ is, and to step out of sectism. Well the Lord permitted us to meet with the little ones at Curtisville and hold meeting over Saturday night, Sunday and Monday night, in which were three consecrations and one for healing, in which a dear brother who had been a Winebrennarian preacher came out clear in the evening light, and renounced sectism, and was ordained an elder in the church of God. There were three buried in baptism Tuesday. Well the Lord willing, we will hold over next Saturday and Sunday in Hobbs Station, and next Saturday a week, the Lord willing, expect to go into Rush county to fill a call that has been made for some time. We wish to say for the encouragement of the dear saints, that our company which is composed of myself and wife, Bro, J.C. Hull, Bro. J. O. Palmer and wife, have cut loose for the gospel and are ready to go wherever the Lord may lead. Any one wanting our assistance may address us at Curtisville, Tipton Co., lnd. Yours for the gospel,

Dear Trumpet Readers: I believe it would be to the glory of God to let you know what the Lord has been doing where we have been laboring. On the 7th of April the Lord sent us forth to Cedarvale, Kansas. We went from there to Centennial school house, Bro. Sigel Hunter and Bro. C. E. Hunter with us. We found the church there in a very bad condition, but through preaching and singing the wonderful word of life, and mighty faith of God in Christ, quite a number were reclaimed and a few consecrated for justification, and twelve for sanctification. Five were buried with Christ in baptism, and at the close of the meeting we held an ordinance service on the 20th at Bro. Holmes’ residence. Praise the Lord for his saving power that was manifest all through the meeting, and for victory in our souls! Some were healed. We trust the church is so settled and established that they shall never be moved away from the truth as it is in Christ. After closing the meeting, the Lord sent us forth and the 21 st to Atlanta, except Bro. Sigel and Ed Hunter who stopped over Sabbath at Lodi school house and preached the words of life. The people seemed hungry for the truth. Ere long there will be an opening for a meeting at that place. Afterward these brethren came on to Atlanta, some thirty miles north. Here we found great division among the professed saints. Very few were standing straight. Two of the elders were very crooked, so much so that they separated themselves and had no confidence in each other, yet going on professing to be saved. After laboring for and with them some time, they both confessed their sins to God, and privately and publicly acknowledged their wrong, and asked each other and the church to forgive them, then consecrated for sanctification. Most of the saints had become tainted with the same spirit. But we rejoice and praise God that nearly all confessed their faults one to another, and asked God to forgive them. We believe that the saints have had so much teaching and suffering in the past that they are determined to watch and pray, that at least the most of them will never be again moved away from the truth. We earnestly pray that the elders and all will be settled and grounded in the truth, that the world can see God is in the midst of his church. We held the most of the services in the M. E. house, and some five of the best of their adherents got saved, and they and two others were baptized, seven in all. The saints at this point hope to have a tabernacle meeting there this fall. No doubt a good harvest of souls may be gathered, if some of God’s holy ones will go in the wisdom and faith in Christ. Also we had a glorious ordinance meeting, and many others besides the saints were in attendance. It had a good effect on the people. As the service was so long we failed to call altar service. After some of the lights were turned down, one sinner wanted to be prayed for, and was truly converted. So you can see the Lord was carrying on the meeting and not us. Praise his name forever! Bro. Price McCully of Harper Kan. came to us about the fourth day after we arrived at Atlanta, and rendered much good service. We truly thank God and the saints at the above named place for their care in supplying all our needs. We took our leave and all of us came on to Wichita, where we will raise the standard of holiness in the name of Jesus, and shall hold forth as long as God directs. We have secured a hall, also will hold street meetings. Praise God for his keeping power! Amen.

Denver, Colo., May 9, 1894.

Dear Saints of God: May the peace of God rule in your hearts. My testimony this morning is, that I am lid away in Jesus Christ, and in him is no sin, and Christ the hope of glory is dwelling in my soul. Praise his name! I am dead to self, to the world, and to all my surroundings, but alive unto God. Hallelujah! I came to Denver one week ago to day; found the saints joyful in our King. The church at this place is on the forward move for God and for souls that are lost. There have been four saved of late, and a few that have been overtaken by the enemy have been reclaimed. Surely we are in perilous [dangerous] times, when Satan is using every means he can to lead us away. But Paul tells us, Having done all to stand, stand therefore.

On the fifth we met at the Rocky Mountain lake and five were buried with Christ in baptism. May God keep their souls in the narrow way. On Sunday evening the 6th, we met at Brother Adams’ and had an ordinance meeting; and in observing the ordinance of feet washing, God did wonderfully fill our souls with joy, and a halo of glory. Praise and thanksgiving went up to God. Then we commemorated the death and suffering of our dear Savior, remembering he has said, as oft as ye eat this bread and drink this cup, ye do show forth the Lord’s death till he come. Let us ever be mindful of his suffering for us. Forasmuch as Christ has suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind. That will be to endure hardness as a good soldier. God has been taking me through the furnace of late. Isa. 48:10. But praise God, I have no desire to flinch or draw back, because I know I have come out the brighter. The word tells us, Zech. 13:9, — I will bring the third part through the fire. So praise God, I am determined to be one of that number, purified, made white, and tried. I do ask all the saints to pray for me that I may have an increase of faith, and that I may be rumble, low down at the feet of Jesus, and that I may stand all the trials that may come upon me. I do not think I shall remain in Denver long, but I am ready to follow the Lord wherever he leads. Any one desiring meeting in Colorado, address me at 2515 Lafayette St., Denver, Colo. Your brother saved, sanctified and kept.

St. James, Mo., May 8, 1894.

Dear Brethren and Sisters, Greeting: We are praising God for his marvelous dealings with us. Our last report was from Michigan where God blessed our winter’s labor with many precious souls. We felt Goc calling us to Missouri, so we came, trusting his promises, remembering the words of Isaiah, “The Lord shall go before you, and the God of Jacob shall be your rereward.” We commenced meeting in Rolla, Apr. 18, by preaching repentance and faith in God, but did not seem to have any real anointing or liberty in putting forth the word. I realized that there was such a thing as a devil and also was aware that he was a deceiver and felt that he was lurking around the camp. We then remembered the words of Jesus who said that these unclean spirits goeth not out but by prayer and fasting. I resolved then and there not to eat anything until the hidden things were brought to light. We soon began to see some who were trying to hang on without a spark of salvation but filled with a fighting, faultfinding, bigoted spirit, trying to sow discord among the brethren. And we know that hypocrites can not stand the fire, so the only thing was to fight or flee. Some tried to seek sympathy among different ungodly spirits, such as the Anti-ordinance and Christian Science delusions. God gave us the word and we dealt it out without mixture, and the word made the separation between those that were honest and those that were not. Meeting continued three weeks in which time we had the privilege of expounding the Word thirty-three times. A number of consecrations were made and many of them obtained a real experience. It takes a thorough consecration to get a Bible experience, consequently those that are not willing to die out to all pride, self, and worldly associations cannot obtain an experience. I pray God to help the saints to keep the fire burning in their souls, and not compromise with crookedness. For if a person is honest he will receive admonition or reproof, but if not, it is because he is destitute of God’s love. Sunday, May 6, Bro. John Reed was ordained elder of the church of God at Rolla, by the laying on of hands and prayer. And we pray God’s blessing upon him that he may feed the flock and be an ensample to them. Bro, T. E. Ellis has been laboring with us for the past few weeks. Also Bro. and Sister Robinson from Montgomery Co. with Bro. Noah Duncan. This is a new company, just starting out in the field. They need your prayers. They pitch their tent about five miles from Rolla. On the seventh at nine o’clock we lad the privilege of baptizing eleven of the saints which was witnessed by the Spirit, and we pray God’s blessings upon them. Amen. We are now holding meeting at this place. Your brother and sister,

A. M. and K. L. Bixler.

Hamburg, Germany, May 4, 1894.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I feel led to write a few lines for the TRUMPET, as I have not written for a while, and know you all are anxious to hear from the foreign field. The work is moving along slowly over the head of all opposing powers that have been wrought against the work here; and souls being saved. Praise God! I am rejoicing this morning in God the rock of my salvation, and for his marvelous saving and keeping power. While surrounded by sin, degradation, misery and woe, yet God keeps us reigning with one Christ Jesus. My husband and I have been holding meetings in Warrington and in Widnes, Eng. for several months previous to coming here, which was a battle with the enemy, but resulted in the salvation of a few souls, who made their escape from the bands and yokes of men, and are now standing to worship God in the Spirit. My prayer is, that they may stand in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made them free, and not to be entangled again in the yoke of bondage. To God be all the glory.

On last Christmas night about two o’clock in the morning while all alone praying to God, he showed me clearly he wanted me to go to Germany. I tried to convince the Lord he had made a mistake to call one so unworthy and unqualified to take the gospel to that dark country. But the words would come, “Whom can I send? and who will go for us?” I said, “Oh my Lord, I am willing, but cannot read the German, and so many are so much better qualified and know the language,” were some of the excuses I offered. But then came the words, “I will be to you all you stand in need of; and fear not their faces, for I am with thee to deliver thee.” And I said, “Lord, I will trust you.” And while in Warrington the Lord made plain to us the time had come for us to go. We packed up and went to Liverpool to see the dear ones again before going; and as the children of Isrial Waded in the river of Jordan to their ankles before the water gave way for them to cross, so the Lord tested us, but when the Lord saw we were willing to wade in, and my dear husband left with but little more than enough to pay his fare here, leaving me with one pound, just one-third enough to pay my way, I told him I would come as soon as he got a room for us. Next day after his departure I received a letter with means which brought Bro. Neville, a German brother and myself to this place to reinforce the battle. Oh praise his name forever! How sweet to trust in God! I have learned some precious lessons in trusting God since I came to this country, which I never knew any thing about before, and it only has given me a deeper and better experience. I am now able to teach others the lesson. Praise God!

We left Liverpool April 24, arrived here safe, and had a pleasant voyage across the North Sea. Found my dear husband awaiting our arrival. So glad to meet him. Now we are in Hamburg in the name of the Lord, to warn the people of the awful calamity that is soon to befall them, and to be a witness against them if nothing else. For as much as lies in our power, every man shall be left without an excuse in the day of judgment. As they don’t allow us to preach on the streets here as in other countries, neither in their sect houses, we are giving out tracts, and talking personally to those we have the opportunity. God is helping us to read and to learn to sing the songs in German, as there are but few that understand the English. Oh dear ones, if you could only see the great need of a holiness journal in German and the many souls that could be reached that would not get to hear the gospel any other way! Oh may God move upon the hearts of those who are holding the means, to the act and great responsibility that rests upon them in spreading the gospel. Time is flying, souls are dying, and are we all doing what we can to rescue perishing souls. Let us go forth; God will supply our every need, and go with us all the way; and we will be fat and flourishing to show that the Lord is upright. Remember the willing and obedient shall eat the good of the land. Praise God!

Truly we feel our dependence upon God as never before, for he that exalteth himself shall be abased, but he who humbleth himself the Lord will exalt. May we all keep humble at the feet of Jesus so the Lord can use us for the gathering together of his remnant, and now while the sifting time has come and a real advance of God’s people, some falter by the way. May we all take warning and live so we can say with Paul, I’ve fought the fight and there is a crown awaiting for us all.

I mean by the assisting grace of God to run the race with patience and gain the prize. To this end have I consecrated. Though it takes my life I shall prove true to God, and go with him all the way. Praise his holy name! Now dear ones, all who know the worth of prayer and pray the prayer of faith, we ask you to pray for us and the work in this dark city; it seems almost impossible to reach them with the gospel, yet God says, he will make a way where there is no way, and we are believing and trusting, leaving the result with God. Your sister in Christ,

Hattie Rupert.

LATER

Since wife has written, we have rented a house with four rooms, and can throw two into one for a meeting room. We had to take it for six months or not at all. Pray with us, that the Lord will furnish the means to pay the rent and that we may keep in the order of the Lord.

CLASS BOOK OR RECORD.

Who keeps the record? Ans. “And of Zion [the church] it shall be said, this and that man was born in her: and the Highest himself shall establish her. The Lord shall count, when he writeth up the people, that this man was born there.” — Psa. 87:5, 6. Where are the names written? Ans. “To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven.” — Heb. 12:23. “But rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.” — Luke 10:20. “And I entreat thee also, true yoke fellow, help those women which labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellow laborers, whose names are in the book of life.” — Phil. 4:3. Whom will the Lord confess, and not blot out? Ans. “He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.” — Rev. 3:5. Whom will he blot out? Ans. “And the Lord said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.” — Ex. 32:33. “and whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast in the lake fire.” — Rev. 20:15. Hence we see that, if people do not get their names written in the book of life, [which requires salvation] it will be an entire failure, even though they might have them on a dozen earthly class books; they “shall have their part in the lake of fire,” just the same.

ELDERS OF THE CHURCH.

We find according to the word of God that elders, and bishops, are the same. Paul writing to Titus said unto him, “For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee: If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly. For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not self willed, not angry, not given to wine [nor beer], no striker, not given to filthy lucre [money]; but a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, [not a holiness fighter], temperate; holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.” — Titus 1:5- 9. The above scripture shows plainly that an elder and bishop is the same, and shows what kind of life, and experience they must have, in order to fill that office.

Who elects the elders? Ans. “As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them, and when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. So they being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus, and when they were at Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. — Acts 13:2-5. Again we see that “Paul sent from Miletus, to Ephesus, and called the elders of the church; and when they had come he said unto them, * * *. Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, [elders] to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.” Acts 20:17, 28.

These texts clearly show God’s order of making elders, or overseers, also how they are ordained or set apart for the work whereunto they are called. Hence we see clearly that the elders are not elected by the people. Read 1 Cor. 12:18, 28, and Eph. 4:8, 11-13.

SOMETHING CONCERNING THE ELDER’S DUTY.

“Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” — 2Tim 2:15.

What kind of books? Ans. “Seek ye out of the book of the Lord, and read.” Isa. 34:16. Parchments. 2 Tim. 4:13. The parchments were rolls, which contained the scripture. — the word of God. Jesus said, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life; and they are they which testify of me. — Jno. 5:39.

Here we are taught something of what kind of books should be studied to be an elder in the church of God. Nothing said about taking a theological course, for two or three years; although education is all right, and we say nothing against it, but when God calls a man or woman to preach, he does not call them to go to school. Paul was educated. Acts 26:24; but Peter and John, were unlearned, and ignorant. Acts 4:13. But they caused the people to marvel, because they had been with Jesus. Read 1 Cor. 1:18—31; 2:1-10. It is the elder’s duty to preach and teach the gospel, and baptize. Mark 16:15, 16; Matt. 28:19, 20. Also to anoint with oil, and pray for the sick. James 5:14, 15. Ordain other elders. Acts 14:23; Tit. 1:5. All these scriptures show thus far what is the duty of an elder; but we must now pass on without commenting. In the W. M. discipline the question is asked,

“How shall a preacher he qualified for his charge? Ans. By walking closely with God, and having his work greatly at heart; and by understanding and loving discipline, ours in particular. Ques. 2. Do we sufficiently watch over each other? Ans. We do not.”

It is no wonder that they do not give much attention to each other after learning what kind of a theological course has to be taken, in order to be a minister in that sect.

COURSE OF STUDY, P. 169, SECTION 32.

“We therefore recommend that all candidates for the ministry he examined on the following subjects in the several annual conferences before being admitted to orders:

By the time a man gets a three years course of theology, and infidelity, in his head, it is not any wonder that he is ready to exalt himself against the knowledge of God.

“Let no man decieve himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God: for it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.” — 1 Cor. 3:18, 19. The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; casting down imaginations [reasonings] and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. 2 Cor. 10:4, 5. All who exalt themselves against the knowledge of God, either by adding to, or taking from his word; will be brought down, by the plagues that shall be added unto them; when his judgments ate revealed upon them.

DEACONS.

Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons. Phil. 1:1.

LIFE OF A DEACON.

“Likewise must the deacons be grave, not double-tongued, not given to wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. And let these also first be proved, then let them use the office or a deacon, being found blameless. Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. Let the deacon be the husband of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.” — 1 Tim. 3:8-12.

DUTY OF DEACONS.

The duty of deacons is, to look after the poor saints; the widows; the financial affairs, supporting the weak, etc. “And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables; wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of good report, full of the Holy Ghost, and wisdom, [not sinners] whom we may appoint over this business. But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch; whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they layed their hands on them.” — Acts 6:1-6.

In this we see how the deacons are appointed, and set apart for their work, or ordained, and their duty in part, also they are to preach and baptize when necessary. “Then Philip [the deacon] went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them. * * * But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the king dom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ they were baptized, both men and women. Acts” 8:5, 12. Read from the 26-40 verses of the same chapter and you will see how he baptized. Paul writing to the brethren at Thessalonica, said, “support the weak,” etc. 1 Thess. 5:14.

We find nothing in God’s word concerning class leaders, nor presiding elders. Therefore we must conclude that men have arranged such, since Jesus built the church: and since God has no such officers in his church; it follows that all manmade isms that have such officers are not the church of God. But now we have one more object to notice concerning the church after which we pass on.

CHURCHES, — MORE THAN ONE.

Let us notice, first the churches of Judea. — “Then had the churches rest throughout all Judea, and Galilee, and Samaria, and were edified. Acts 9:31. They were in Christ, — “and was unknown by face unto the churches of Judea, which were in Christ.” — Gal. 1:22. How many churches in Christ? Ans. “For as we have many members in one body, and all members Have not the same office: so we being many, are one body [church] in Christ, and every one members one of another.” — Rom. 12:4, 5.

Now we know that in sectism they are not members one of another. Baptists are not members of the Methodists; etc. The churches in Christ have the same name. — “For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God, which in Judea are in Christ Jesus: 1 Thess. 2:14. In each town or city, there were a few saved people, which were called the church at each place; and yet they all, having the same name, and being in Christ, composed or made up the “one body” which is the church of God.

The seven churches of Asia, were in seven different towns, or cities, and not two in one town. Rev. 1:11. Hence there was a great difference in the churches of God in those days, and sectism in this present age; for we can find as many denominations represented in one small town, in many places, as there were churches in the whole province of Asia. Another vast difference between the churches of God, and modern sectism is, that the church of God, wherever you find it, takes the gospel, or doctrine of Christ, for their only rule of faith and conduct, or discipline; but the sects, — although they acknowledge the word of God is sufficient — must have a different book of discipline for each sect name. Mr. A. says.

“There must have been s church out of which a man could be cast by another man, which would not be possible if there were not a visible local church organization.”

He quotes, 3 Jno. 9, 10. “I wrote unto the church: [one] but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the pre-eminence among them, receiveth us not. Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating, against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.”

There has been enough proof that the church of God is visible to all who are not blinded by the false gods of sectism, and some bigot, (like Diotrephes) who loves to have pre-eminence, — if they should feel so disposed — could refuse a man, or cast him out of a local assembly, or congregation of the church of God, just the same as a man could be cast out of a congregation of sectarians; but thank God, men cannot take our names off the class book, or book of life: and furthermore, such men are not of God. John says, “Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating [tattling] against us with malicious words:” and the nth verse says, “Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God; but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.” This is positive proof.

A TESTIMONY.

_____

Battle Creek, Mich., Apr. 9, 1894.

Dear Saints of the most high God: I much desire to give my testimony, and some of my experience in this Christian warfare, and give God all the glory for the salvation of my soul, and the healing of my body.

In 1883 He converted me while I was yet in the wilderness of sin, in sectarian darkness. The preachers did not teach sanctification. I believed that ministers should be sanctified to teach the Word, although I was ignorant at the time that God was raising up a host of sanctified ones to preach the everlasting Gospel to this dying world. Providentially, I was led to hear the Word expounded in all its purity by Brother D. S. Warner. I soon found by reading the Scriptures that he taught the truth. I also heard other ministers teach the same Gospel, which gives us wonderful knowledge of the salvation of the soul, the healing of the sick, casting out devils, and many other things which are written in the Lamb’s book of life, to show us the way to heaven. I was convinced at once that this is the way. I was in a backslidden state when I heard the pure Gospel preached. At one of the saints’ meetings I was eye witness to a case of casting out of devils after which I became possessed. God permitted it to be so for a purpose. God’s word clearly shows that it is possible for devils to be cast out of one and enter another or wherever they can find place or refuge. Mark 5:8-13. For He said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit. And He asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is legion, for we are many. And he besought him much, that he would not send them away put of the country. Now there was there, nigh unto the mountain, a great herd of swine feeding. And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine: that we mey enter into them. And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea (they were about two thousand), and were choked in the sea.

Many people get possessed who hear the pure Gospel preached and reject it, and are finally sealed for eternal death, hell is their doom. While some who wish to make heaven their home, are willing to pass through the trying ordeal, humiliating themselves before God, to get free from the awful powers of darkness — Luke 4:35. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not. Luke 4:41. And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ, the Son of God. And he, rebuking them, suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ. The devil is going about seeking whom he may devour. Rev. 13:7. Praise God! But we whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life overcome the enemy by the word of our testimony. 2 Cor. 10:4. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds. Eph. 6:12. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalites, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Blessed be God! Praise his great name!

It was a long time after I was saved before I was able to understand clearly some things about the oppressive powers of darkness. But bless God, who is able to help us to exercise our senses to discern both good and evil. He taught me the lesson over and over again, that I might not be deceived. The book, His precious word clearly shows the narrow way, that not even a fool shall err therein. Praise His great name. The enemy would work upon my imagination, and I was not conscious of it; but our alwise teacher has given me a better experience. Although I was saved at the time, Jesus has brought me out into a large place. 2 Cor. 10:5. Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringeth into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. I realize it was for my good to have such a humiliating experience, for I was just the one to pray against anything so terrible. After being possessed for some time, I claimed to be sanctified through it all, thinking all the time that the strange experience was sanctification. But since God delivered me from all satanic influences, I realize of a truth that my sins are washed away by the cleansing blood of Jesus, and I have the peace which passeth understanding, joy the world can never give. His blessed holy Spirit abides within my soul. 1 Cor. 3:16. Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? I pray much for God to guide me in the way. Rom. 8:26, 27 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. Ps. 32:8. I will instruct thee, and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye. Is. 48:11. And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not. Is. 46:10. My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure. Praise our great Redeemer for the deliverance of my soul! I realize of a truth that he is guiding me by his counrel, and has taught me many precious lessons.

I have been greatly afflicted in mind and body. One affliction was the itch, from which God mercifully healed me. Many wonderful lessons he has taught me in this holy walk with God. His all-seeing eye searches the very depths of our hearts. He taught me several years ago that to abuse the body was a terrible sin, from which I shrink with horror. I have realized for many years from a little child, inactivity of the mind from time to time. I should have become a moral idiot had it not been for the healing power of God. Some time before I ever knew anything of the love of God, while under the care of a physician, he took the diagnosis of the case, and pronounced it to be monomania. I did not get any better by his treatment: beside there was a complication of diseases, which I did not recover from, but grew worse instead of better. After the Lord gave me a Bible knowledge of conversion and entire sanctification in 1886, I took my case to him, the great Physician, but was first led to find out the full meaning of monomania (which is derangement of a single faculty of the mind). There is nothing impossible with God. John 14:14. If ye shall ask anything in my name, I will do it. With confidence I looked to Him and was perfectly healed. Praise God! My mind is in an active, healthy condition. All signs of a monomania are gone, and when tempted I steadfastly resist the devil. James 4:7. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

I also had curvature of the spine which was a critical one. And by laying on of hands God performed the wonderful work. The first change I noticed was that my spine became softened where it was badly curved, and then straightened out natural and became hardened like the rest of the spine. Eph. 3:20. Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, To him be all honor and glory forever, for his great kindness. The great Physician also healed me of a complication of diseases, for which I give him all the praise. My general health is good, and whenever I am afflicted I commune with our all-wise Physician and he always hears and answers prayer according to his infinite wisdom. And now I am walking with Jesus each moment and hour, conscious of a closer walk with God in this blessed sanctified state. I realize that each trial of faith is precious to my soul, although it may seem grievous at the time. 1 Pet. 1:7. That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ. His precious name is worthy of all praise forever. I am saved, sanctified and kept by the power of God. Your sister in Jesus’ name. Pray for me.

May Smith.
