Consecration’s Test.

_____

Am I working for the Master?
Am I doing all I can?
Am I sure my eye is single,
On the Lord and not on man?
Am I watching some weak brother,
Whose mistakes I’m forced to see?
Do I dare to doubt my Savior,
Who has power to keep me free?

Am I living pure and holy,
Living for the Lord alone,
Sowing freely, by all waters,
Precious seed, for Christ alone?
Am I praying for the loved ones,
Even those who never pray,
Yea, and even dare to hinder
Them that walk in wisdom’s way?

Am I yielding and submitting
To the hand of providence,
Never weary in well doing,
Welcoming the consequence?
Does my fate appear the hardest?
Dare I feel the Lord unkind,
Just because he lets strong fetters
Press me sore and tightly bind?

Do I shrink from persecution,
When intended for my good?
Do J profit by each lesson,
As God wants I always should?
Do I always try the spirit,
Test it well, and prove it true?
Can I find eternal merit
In each piece of work I do?

Do I seek eternal favor
In some petted little scheme,
When In wisdom God hath ordered,
What to me too hard may seem?
Do I bear my cross with patience,
And for Jesus, every day?
Am I ready, anxious, waiting
For that home, not far away?

Blessed Jesus! precious Savior!
Too good to ever be unkind!
Let me share thy loving favor
With all else left far behind.
Ever trusting, never doubting
What this loving eye may see
In the treasures of thy wisdom, —
Precious cross, from you to me!

__________

THE NARROW WAY.

_____

“BECAUSE strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” Matt. 7:14. As we progress up this narrow way with our feet firmly pressed on the solid rock, and we furtively cast our eyes on either side and see the horrors that those must endure who make missteps and fall off the rock, we then look straight forward to that wicket gate and faintly though surely see the beckoning hands of our blessed Redeemer beckoning us to press forward; and like Christian in Pilgrim’s Progress, with our eyes fixed upon the bright figure standing at the gate, we press on. As we rise higher and higher, as the carnal mind is obliterated, our step is more secure, and the path is much smoother. We have Jesus to guide our steps, and with Jesus we hold constant converse and learn of him.

We sometimes hear cries behind us, that are wafted to our ears, like this: “You are not in the right path, the holy people are a bad lot, nothing but hypocrites,” etc. We ask Jesus what we must reply. He says: “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father but by me.” John 14:6. Now we have learned another lesson from our blessed Redeemer; ’tis this: “If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; even the spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.” Jno. 15:15-17. Glory be to God who giveth us the victory through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! Now we have realized on that promise we keep his commandments willingly, every one of them, and have found that “his yoke is easy and his burden is light.” With all this to comfort us in our pilgrim journey, our feet cling the tighter to the narrow way; we have less trouble to keep our footing. That arch enemy, Satan, flings his poisoned darts after us, but they are harmless now, “Because greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world.” 1 Jno. 4:4. We have no fear while traveling in this narrow way, for we are told that “no lion shall be there, nor any ravenous beast shall go up thereon; it shall not be found there; but the redeemed shall walk there. And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.” Isa. 35:9, 10. Hallelujah to our God, who has redeemed us with his own precious blood, and has bought us with the price of his precious life, to be heirs with him of all this joy and gladness, and where our sighing and sorrowing shall have an end! Thus you see this narrow way has its attractions.

This narrow way has a great many requirements. “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven.” Matt. 5:44, 45. And “therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them.” Mat. 7:12. “Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, so shall ye be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.” Matt. 7:1, 2. Now we have seen the attraction, the joy and the gladness that those have who travel this narrow way, with its delightsome scenery which is pleasant to the eye, and its pleasant perfume. All this so charms the traveler that he is made to exclaim, “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.” Mat. 5:8. There is luscious fruit to be gathered as we travel this narrow way that leads to the strait gate; such as, “If ye abide in me and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will and it shall be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.” John 15:7, 8. What! is it possible that we are now the disciples of Jesus Christ the righteous? We have asked and received that which brings health and happiness, joy and contentment; this is one kind of fruit we must partake of so that we can grow in the knowledge of the truth as it is in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Now we find that we must deny ourselves, take up our cross and follow Jesus daily, through evil as well as good report. For, “every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work, of what sort it is.” 1 Cor. 3:13. Then we have this blessed assurance: “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he heareth us: and if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.” 1 John 5:14, 15. This gives us all that we desire in this life. So let us abide in the Vine, and let his words abide in us always, that we have no lack in anything that pertains to a perfect life in Christ, and so that our lives be hid away with Christ in God. Amen.

PARENTS’ DUTY TO CHILDREN.

_____

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Prov. 22:6.

MY mind has been exercised lately on the subject of parents’ duty and obligations to children at least in some’ things. Now this admonition is mostly to parents professing godliness.

FIRST. Let me ask you, Do you as parents believe God’s word and especially this promise: “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it?” I ask for an honest respond from your heart. Do you believe it? I imagine a thousand voices respond, “Yes, of course I do, and have believed it ever since I have been a Christian.” Are you sure you have? then why not act out your faith and put it in practice and give your children the benefit of it?

When God says, train up a child, he does not mean bring them up or let them grow up just as they please. Let me ask a question. Can parents train a child up in the good and right way if they are not in perfect harmony with God themselves? Remember the husbandman must first be partaker of the fruit himself. — 2 Tim. 2:6. Can parents teach their children truthfulness if they are not truthful themselves? I have known fathers and mothers who would tell their children to hang up their stockings on Christmas eve, and that old Santa Claus would put something nice in them, at the same time they knew there was no such a thing in existence, and that they would put the things in the stockings themselves, telling their children lies and expecting them to grow up truthful men and women. Is that training them correctly? God’s word says all liars shall have their part in that lake that burneth forever and ever. — Rev. 21:8. So if you would pursue that course you see where you would spend eternity.

There is more than one way parents can teach their children to be untruthful. I have heard them say, If you do so and so, I will punish you. The child goes on and does just what they are told not to do, but gets no punishment, so they may repeat two or three times or more and still the mother or father fails to fulfill their promise, but still keeps on threatening, which is contrary to God’s word. 1 Pet. 2:23; Eph. 6:9. Soon the child takes notice of it and will remark: Father or mother said they would whip me if I did not do as they told me, but I know they won’t do it, for they have said that so many times and I do not believe they mean what they say. You see, the child has lost confidence in them already, does not believe the parents tell the truth, and the parents are to blame. Teaching your children to tell falsehoods by telling them yourselves is not training them right.

I have seen father and mother both professing holiness, when one of them would correct a child the other would pet them and ignore the other’s correction. Is that the correct way? is that fulfilling the scriptures? How can two walk together except they be agreed? Amos 3:3. I have heard it said many times that holiness parents have the worst children. By close observation I have found it too often true, which made my heart very sad, and the only apology that I see can be offered for them is, the most of them have lately come out of darkness into light and have not yet received and walked in the light on that line. But my prayer is, God hasten the time when parents will get in God’s order on that line, for truly it is a reproach to the cause of Christ.

Dear ones, go to God in earnest prayer and solve the problem and see if the fault does not often lie in yourselves. God does not command you to do some thing you cannot do; if he did he would be inconsistent in the extreme, but God’s ways are equal.

Holiness mothers dress plain, that is, if they are holy they do, but their little girls six, eight and ten years old, want to dress like the world, wear flowers and feathers and ruffles and puffs and jewelry and such like, and they coax their mother but very little and she gives up to them and lets them have their way, and some times just seems to take pride in helping them to fix a dress like the world and she professing holiness. Oh what inconsistency! and the scripture plainly declares if any man have the love of the world in him the love of the Father is not in him. — 1 Jno. 2:15. And mothers fastening pride and the love of the world in their own children and then expect them to be good and humble children; planting thorns and expecting apples. Do men gather grapes of thorns or figs of thistles? Matt. 17:16. And when you speak to the mothers causing their children dress to plain, their excuse is something like this, “Well I can hardly control my children and the world just makes fun of them if they do not dress in fashion.” Dear mother, God wants you to dress your children neat and clean, but plain; remember the word commands the sisters to adorn themselves in modest apparel. 1 Tim. 2:9. Now do you suppose God would want their children dressed different? Some think because God’s word and his children condemn pride, that they should go dirty and slovenly, and let their children go the same, but I want to say the Spirit of God has good taste, and God’s word condemns filthiness whether it is on the outside or on the inside, for “God hath not called us unto uncleanness but unto holiness.” 1 Thess. 4:7.

Nine cases out of ten, when mothers try to justify themselves in dressing their children like the world, if they would only look down into their own hearts they would find the carnal nature there, from which these sprouts have sprung. Get it removed and let Jesus reign and rule in your hearts, and he will help you to control your children properly. The remedy lies in the all cleansing blood. All evil things proceed from the heart. Matt. 15:19. Therefore any sprout coming from the heart, calls for the atoning blood; but where sin abounded grace did much more abound.

We have no excuse to offer; dear mothers, get down at the feet of Jesus and plead as the Syrophenician woman did for her daughter; plead for yourselves and children, and God will hear the cry of the humble. Certainly this is the age about which Paul prophesied in 2 Tim., 3d chap. Disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy. And parents are often largely to blame for their children being disobedient, and God commands elders or bishops, which are the same, to have their families in subjection. 1 Tim. 3:4, 5. For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God? — Verse 5.

Now, I appeal to you as elders in the church of the living God, are you obeying that command? and if you are not, remember that stands in the way of sinners. They say we profess to be Bible Christians and are not living out the Word. I have seen fathers try to shirk the responsibility of helping to train their children, and put it off on the mother. Now fathers, God help you to see your duty in this matter. Shoulder up your part of the responsibility and don’t put it all on the “weaker vessel;” for if you do, I fear in the day of judgment your skirts will not be clear. Remember this is a responsibility you cannot put upon another and be clear in the matter.

Parents, if you want your children to be polite or courteous away from home you must be polite and courteous with them at home, and if you want your children to have a forgiving spirit, you must ask their forgivness when you have wronged them just the same as you want them to ask your forgiveness when they have disobeyed you. The Word commands you to not provoke your children to anger, lest they be discouraged. Col. 3:21. Eph. 6:4.

If children are not taught to be obedient to their parents and respect and reverence them, soon the children will control their parents and bring them down to the grave with gray hairs and sorrow. Pray with, and for your children, and live so before them that they will have perfect confidence in your christianity. If my mother had not lived a true and consistent Christian before her family, I fear to day that I would now be a confirmed infidel; but her life was so consistent with her profession that when she reproved me for my sins, it went like a dagger to my heart and was the means of leading me to Christ. Oh praise our God forever, for Christian training, both by precept and example!

Fathers and mothers, you don’t know how you are shaping your children’s eternal destiny either for good or bad, by your own life and walk, and your conduct towards them.

The dear Lord has made you responsible in this matter, and in the day of judgment when God requires you to give an account of your stewardship, how will you answer him if you have not raised your children right? I fear some of you will be speechless. And you parents, that are living sinful lives and are raising your children without prayer, when they come up against you in the day of judgment and say, “I never heard my parents pray,” what will you do? Oh! turn to God while you can, so that you will not be miserable through all eternity, and also be the means of your dear children being lost.

Some may say: “Yes, there is Sister Cole, she never had any family, and she knows nothing about training children, and she is not a competent judge in the matter.” If I am not, God is. And as Paul says, I think I have the mind of Christ, and I have given you God’s word which will judge you in the last day. St. John 12:48.

Now dear parents, you who are discouraged about your children’s salvation, be of good cheer, do your whole duty to them, both in training and also setting a godly example before them, and then leave the result with God. The Word says, They that sow in tears shall reap in joy, and he that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again rejoicing, bringing their sheaves with them. And inasmuch as ye know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Allow me to give another word of advice before I close: When you correct your children, do it in the spirit of meekness. If you are in a worried or tried condition, wait till that is all over and then look to the dear Lord for help so that the correction may make the right impression on them and help to mould their young minds for God, and in so doing you are training your children for God.

Mary Cole.

This is one of the most beautiful locations, and grove, etc., of any that we have yet seen, and would truly make a splendid camp ground. It is situated just outside the town, and has good R. R. facilities. If any of the brethren feel led of the Lord to look after the matter do so. Address Sister M. E. Sain, Neosho Falls, Kan.

Since Bro. Leininger’s article was written on “Little Things” one hundred and ninety-five persons have responded by sending in donations to the amount of $390, to aid in paying off the office indebtedness. By this act of kindness we have been enabled to pay off one note of long standing, also several smaller bills. There is yet unpaid a note five hundred dollars for machinery, and a few hundred dollars for paper, which we believe the Lord will in some way enable us to pay soon, as we have asked him to do it. We truly thank God and the dear children of God for their kind aid in the spread of the gospel.

THE SABBATH TRACT

_____

That has been on our list is now exhausted. But we are busy at work preparing a revised and enlarged edition. It thoroughly exposes and overthrows all the later refuges, and reasonings of Adventism respecting the law and the Sabbath. It will contain a great deal of biblical and historic truth not found in the old tract. It is designed to be very thorough. Will doubtless be over one hundred pages. Price continues the same as the old tract. 10 cts. per copy, $1.00 per dozen.

Bro. and Sister Decker write us, they have procured and set up a large tabernacle in Indianapolis, Ind. in a beautiful grove on North Ill. St. and they greatly wish for help. They want some able minister to come and thoroughly instruct the converts in the doctrine of God. Also a soprano singer. Bro. and Sister Decker are very sweet singers, and having located in a pleasant grove, on street car line, if they had some reinforcements no doubt a glorious work could be done. The Lord send help.

THE GLORIOUS CAMP OF THE SAINTS.

_____

The precious annual feast, in this place, has again passed by. Its record is entered in heaven, and its precious fruits are deeply planted in many hearts; and eternity will gather up and put on display the boundless increase thereof. Hallelujah to the “Prince of the Host!”

The encampment a year ago having been such a great increase upon previous meetings, it had been thought by some that this year would fall behind last. But the increase has been nearly as great this year again, as that of last. This in some measure, proclaims the steady and rapid advance of the light of present truth. Persons were in attendance from Canada, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Mississippi, Colorado, California) and all the central states.

There was a great victory gained in answer to prayer, in the matter of reduced rates on an extensive scale. Praise God! The R. R. Co’s and associations are beginning to see that this work of God is moving mightily in all the earth. But even up to the beginning of the camp, there were discouraging barriers in the way of R. R. privileges, that had to be removed by the hand of God. Praise his name, his works are truly wonderful.

The number of tents was larger than ever before; and the large new school house and all the buildings were filled.

There was a marked advance in real devotion and zeal. The camp was truly alive unto God. The voice of prayer and the fire of praise never ceased except for necessary sleep. Prayer meetings like flames of fire, broke out in different parts of the camp, during all intervals between meetings. At these informal meetings the mighty power of God was manifest in the healing of scores from bodily afflictions, and in the salvation of many souls. On account of the glorious work done in this way, the number that came to the altar in the public convocations was less than in past years. As for the number saved and healed it is only recorded in heaven, and to God be all the glory. When we came together this year, we found that many hearts had been burdened, with the same prayer. All hearts seemed to accord in the one great desire of spiritual advancement. Next to the immediate work of salvation, every soul hungered and thirsted for all the heavenly wisdom and divine power, in the reach of possible attainment for further results, and great and glorious was the school conducted by the teacher that came from God. Even more glorious and effectual than his incarnate presence was with his primitive disciples, the Lord was present by the holy Comforter, searching all things out that displeased him, removing the same from all the willing and odedient, and filling a the hearts of the humble with the good things of the kingdom of heaven, Great grace was truly upon them all, and all praised God for the many precious lessons learned, enabling them to more perfectly show forth the holy life of Christ, and labor more successfully in the salvation of the lost.

The first Sabbath a sudden storm came from the south, blowing over a few trees, making a narrow escape for hundreds of people. One family, driving out in their wagon, were reached by a tree top; the parents and one child were hurt. They have great reason to thank God, that through his great mercy, they escaped with their lives. One man had both his horses killed by the trees, and some buggies were smashed. About forty-seven dollars were raised in a short time to help the man buy another team. This event we look upon as a call of the Lord to take down the tall timber, top the smaller trees, and fill up with small shade trees, which have been thought necessary, but hitherto time and workmen lave been wanting. We trust by another year safety will be secured.

Several times during the meeting, the ordinance of baptism was administered in the beautiful lake near by. The whole number that followed the Lord in this burial were sixty-nine.

Saturday evening June 23d, the washing of the saints’ feet, and the word’s supper were observed with great sacredness. There being not less than four hundred of the blood-washed present to follow our meek and lowly Master. O praise God for such a scene! Jesus and his glory were in the midst, blessing, the souls of the obedient.

There were ministers present during the meeting, Bro’s Kilpatrick, J. Cole, Geo. and Mary Cole, Sister Fisher, Bro’s Schell, Henry, and Dillon. Bro’s Markwell and Haynes from Kansas; along with the ministers in these parts, and a host of young workers from far and near. A pretty full congregation assembled every morning at six o’clock, and received rich lessons on the faith of God, through Bro. J. Cole. These meetings, we believe, will result in the establishment of many souls, and and a more thorough equipment of others to battle for the Lord.

The Lord is raising up a great company of workers to run everywhere with the gospel of Christ. In some of them we see the real self-sacrificing spirit, that is willing to suffer all things for the sake of Christ and the gospel. Oh that God may multiply again and again, the heralds of truth, who are willing to labor for and REALLY SUFFER WITH CHRIST. Endure as seeing Him who is invisible, and count privation loss, and actual want, a sweet privilege for Christ’s sake, who died for us.

The following brethren were ordained by the laying on of hands: Bro. Edward Ellis, Bro. William Merritt, and Bro. H. M. Riggle from Floating Bethel, Pa. Order was good.

The trustees of the camp meeting association purchased the land for the exclusive use of the camp meetings and the Children’s Home. This fall, they will have about $225 to meet. We hope the dear saints “with one shoulder,” will all bear this little financial burden, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

With much love, many tears, and affectionate farewell greetings, the holy people bade adieu to each other and the sacred ground, for their far away homes, and fields of labor. Bro’s Collins, Warren, Bixler and Smith, begin a meeting in the town grove of South Haven this week. Bro. and Sister Orr, and Bro. and Sister Merritt, begin work in Benton Harbor about July 2d and from there go to Douglass, Mich., and hold a tabernacle meeting. We cannot tell whither all the flying messengers are going forth, the Lord knoweth. His blessing attend all for his name’s sake. Amen.

Dear ones in Jesus: Praise the Lord for victory in our souls over the world, the flesh and the devil. We began meeting here the twenty-ninth of May and continued until yesterday (Lord’s day). Eleven followed our blessed Savior in baptism. We held services on the bank of the river

(Lynches river) last Sunday and yesterday. The Lord was with us in preaching the Word. There was a so-called “holiness band” here, one of the first I organized when I was in error and preaching against water baptism. I was honest then. I had not the light and understanding of the word of God that came to me soon afterward. Praise the Lord forevermore! Some at this meeting would not take the truth, but resisted. We expect Brother Campbell to join us soon, when we will return the Lord willing and hold an ordinance meeting. We go from here to morrow to Bishopville, S. C., for a few days, and then to Tiller’s Ferry, to hold a meeting. Yours in Jesus,

J. E. Shaw, and wife.

Dear Readers of the Trumpet: Our last report was given while we were at Crothersville. We began the meeting at No. 7 school house in Vernon Tp., Jackson Co. Much good was done and the little ones much strengthened. Two reclaimed from their backslidden state, and three or more received the experience of sanctification, and others won to the truth. Meeting closed there May 18. We came to Jennings Co. the 19th, and began meeting at the Brown school house near Bro. George’s, which continued until the next Saturday night. Three were saved, others strengthened, and some saw light which they should walk in lest they perish. We met with the little church at Oak Grove school house on Sunday. In the evening nine were buried in baptism. One soul being convicted, was saved at the water, others convicted but would not yield. From here we went to Scipio where we began meeting the 28th. May God bless the people of that town and save them, for great is their wickedness. Yet several seemed very favorable, and much seed was sown which we trust some one will reap in the future. We again returned to Oak Grove June 10, where we met the little ones and all received a benefit from God. Three more were buried in the watery grave and another saved on the bank of the stream. Bless our God! Came to this place yesterday and began meeting last night in the public reading room with but few out. We don’t know how long meeting will continue, as expenses are high, but God will provide. Pray much for us and the work here. As far as we now know we feel that God wants us in this state this summer, but we are ready to march to the uttermost parts of the earth if Father leads. Oh bless his name! Yours in Jesus,

Dearly Beloved Saints: I have just returned home from Thornport, Perry Co., O., to which place I went June 2d in company with Bro. Sinift of this place, and was met by dear Bro. Lewis Basore and another young man who is a friend to the truth. From the station we walked about three miles to the edge of the Licking Reservoir where there was another friend waiting with a boat to row us to Thornport, a distance of about four miles, stopping at the latter friend’s house along the shore and partaking of supper. We continued our journey by boat and arrived in good time to begin meeting the same evening June 2d. Bro. Sinift was called home by telegram, his daughter being very sick. This brother was used effectually of the Lord in preaching the word. I continued after his departure (June 8) until June 10. In the afternoon we, with the few saints and a large crowd of people went a distance of about three miles where a few souls were immersed who chose to follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. Near Thornport is a park controlled by the Ry. Co. and is a great summer resort for pleasure seekers, and upon our arrival at the place appointed for the baptismal service we found a large crowd of people already assembled, some from the City of Columbus and other parts of central Ohio. and in a short time about a score more laded boats were landed. When I saw the crowds of people I felt the spirit of God stirring my soul to speak His word to them, which we did as the Spirit led and gave us utterance for the space of about an hour and a half, to which the mass gave good attention, being seated like the multitude Jesus so miraculously fed (on the ground,)after which eight happy souls were immersed by Bro. Basore; two of the above number stepping forward out of the crowd declared God had forgiven their sins, and insisted on being baptized, which request was complied with. Meeting closed that night (June 10.) There were no consecrations in the meeting. Bro’s Sinift and Basore had held meeting at that place last winter; several were converted. Many hearts were won to the truth and the little church strengthened and built up. May God help those who are lingering at Jordan’s banks, to cross over into the land of Canaan and possess it. I hereby tender my thanks to the saints and friends who so kindly administered to our needs while I was among them. God bless them. Meeting closed with victory on the Lord’s side. I had the pleasure of meeting dear Bro. Speck on the train at Latty, O. and enjoyed- the eight miles ride we had together, while we exchanged reports of the good work and God’s dealings with our souls. Bro. Speck like myself was on his way home. Pray for me, all ye saints. I am as ever your humble servant and free brother saved in Jesus,

Dearly Beloved Saints: May God bless you ail abundantly and keep you from evil. Amen. Our last report was from St. Clair, Tenn. From there we came to Dodge, Ky. Did not find the saints in very good condition, on account of some trouble they had gotten into about one year before; which had not yet been thoroughly settled. Meeting commenced, and judgment went forth unto victory. Hallelujah! Nearly all were willing to confess where they had done wrong, or made any mistakes, and by so doing God blessed their souls abundantly. Praise his name! However we are very sorry to say that some would not confess their wrong, but contrariwise, claimed to be right when they were not right; and showed a clamoring, contentious spirit which proved to all present that they were not saved. May God be merciful and save yet if possible, is our earnest prayer. From Dodge we went to Stony Point; found most of the dear saints standing firm. We only stayed a short time, on account of the people being so busy with their spring work. The Lord blessed our souls, also the saints were much strengthened and edified. To God be all the glory. They expect to have a general protracted meeting sometime in August the Lord willing. From Stony Point, dear Bro. Kilpatrick went home, and left me to continue the work in Kentucky, which I did till June 13. I visited the saints first at Westwood; had a very precious time; but no one got saved. From there we went into new places, first to the Dooly school house, four days. The meeting was well attended and the Lord blessed us in administering his precious word, which we are sure will not return void. We then went to the Spruce school house, where we stayed about five days; but about half that time we could not have any meeting because the people did not come out to hear the gospel till after we had been there three days. But when they did come they almost universally acknowledged the truth and wanted us to stay longer. May God bless them. We hope many of them will get saved in the near future. Had meeting two nights at Mt. Sterling in a private house with good result. During my stay in Kentucky I had the privilege of meeting with the dear saints at Dodge at different times. Had some very precious meetings; some were converted, and a number consecrated for sanctification, and most all got the experience. God keep them faithful is our prayer. There is a great opening for workers in the southern states, and we pray God to send laborers into the vineyard, for truly the hearvest is great and the laborers few. I came to this place June 14, found many dear saints on the camp ground shouting the praises of God. Oh hallelujah! Thus far the meeting has been one of victory and wonderful power. I am learning many precious lessons from my dear Saviour. Praise his name! I am more determined than ever to serve him all the days of my life. I expect to go to my home from here, and stay a very short time, then start southward again the Lord willing, to be continually in the evangelistic work wherever the Lord leads. I earnestly request the prayers of all saints that God may keep me, and use me to his own glory. Yours in the one body,

Thos. Carter.

Dear Brethren: We arrived in Freewater the 15th. ult. and after a few days, rented a hall of the C. P. sect for two or three weeks. The truth began to take a decided effect and conviction settled down on the people. All moved along nicely and quietly for a week. But when their priest came to the meeting, he raised disturbance and showed no little lack of courtesy by his interruption, resisting and seeking to pervert the truth, etc. to justify and prop up his Diana; which stirred up the sect spirit and carnality in his members. And still he is prating against us and the truth. The next day they closed the door against us. In the evening when we came expecting meeting in the hall, the door being closed, the Lord gave us a most glorious and spiritual meeting out on the porch. We thus continued the meetings for a few evenings. At this time we were much comforted, encouraged and strengthened by the coming of dear Bro’s Bailey and Bamford with their companions from Wash. A few were saved, and Sister Cauvel was sanctified and brought to Zion just in time, as she was then decided to join a sect, which she had often intended to do but the Lord always hindered her from doing so. We hope this sister will walk out in all the light of God and prove true to the Lord, and stay only in Zion and aloof from Babylon. We then went and held some meetings in Ingle chapel, which resulted much to His glory. On Sabbath P. M. there were nine at the altar, some for pardon of sins and others for sanctification. The Lord did a glorious work, and the power of God was truly manifested. One sister later, was gloriously saved and wonderfully healed by his power. Hallelujah! Seven were immersed in his name and others yet to be in the near future. One of those saved was Bro. Savage, who had been a C. U. preacher, had backslidden but was saved in the meeting and embraced the whole truth and was baptized. May the Lord help him truly reach and obtain the entire cleansing of perfect holiness, anoint and qualify him to preach the everlasting gospel and send him forth into the field in his own time. May the Lord bless and keep them all in his name and saved to the end. We believe the Lord has a glorious work yet to be done for him in these parts. We expect to return in September with a tabernacle Lord willing and labor all fall, after we are through here, then go to Pendleton and labor there for some time and meet our dear Bro. Zimmerman. We also expect to go to Boise City, Idaho, sometime next fall or winter. In the name of Jesus, we feel like inviting and urging upon dear Bro. and Sister J. Worden to come and join us in company and in the work. May the Lord stir them up and send them out here, if it is his will. We are praying God to send some of the kings of the east and the Lord’s fishers or hunters out into Washington or Oregon. The Lord bless and reward all the dear ones who received us and so kindly cared for us all. We are now holding forth the word of life in Weston. Thus far two justified. From here we go to the Washington camp meeting ten miles north of Colfax, to last from June 22 to July 15. After that we go and hold a tabernacle meeting in Oaksdale, Wash, to begin about July 17 and last four or six weeks. Love to all.

Yours in Him,

Dear Brethren: We are glad to report a solid victory for God in the town of Castine, Dark Co., O. We anticipated a glorious time and were disappointed only by God sending more than we could ask or think. The truth captured the country and many were arrested and taken by the Lord, and to day they are gloriously saved in Jesus. Semi-infidels (made such by false professors) and skeptics were gloriously saved and blest with a wonderful experience, which was a convincing reality to all who were in attendance. We never witnessed such a meeting in our life. The Spirit and power of God came down in copious showers throughout the meeting. Sectism is rotten at Castine, (as it is everywhere, but the eyes of the people are open at this place) and the harvest was ripe and ready to be gathered in to God’s church. This is accounted for by Bro. Speck and Co., sowing the gospel seed there last winter. They were limited to one week’s meeting by being shut out of the U. B. house U. B. ism and every other ism has been thoroughly sifted at Castine by God’s word and thus a glorious separation of the wheat from the chaff has been effected. The very best and most spiritual members were led by the great Shepherd into his own sheepfold and thus the wolves and goats were separated from them. Many sinners were convinced of the truth, whom we expect ere long to see saved, while a goodly number were saved and made happy. We return God thanks for all who were saved from sin and sect bondage. May God keep them ever free and separate, without compromise, living exclusively for his glory and the good of the people. Oh, what a meeting! Some were weeping and others shouting and the voice of them was heard afar off. See Ezra 3:10-13. Some were saved at home and then came to the meeting and confessed Jesus before the people, and oh, how the Lord did bless them. Many times there were but few dry eyes in the congregation. Good order and profound respect and great interest and large crowds characterized the whole meeting, with the exception of a few stormy days at first. We return our thanks to the people of Castine for their kindness in looking after our wants. May God reward them spiritually and financially. Seventeen were “buried with Christ by baptism into death, that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” Oh how serene was this baptism! May God keep his church at Castine in such a condition that he can add others to it. Bro. J. McGriff, there, is called into the gospel work. We pray God to sanctify, qualify and send him forth soon. God bless Bro. J. McFarland, also, upon whom great responsibility now rests in caring for this flock of God’s sheep. God knows how many were saved if we do not, for we kept no correct account of them. There were between twenty and thirty made free, the most of whom seem to have a genuine experience in pardon. Some also were gloriously sanctified. Many of the Clark Co., brethren were in attendance and had their cups filled and running over, and they too were used of God greatly in the meeting. Wife and I returned home with the Clark Co. brethren and Bro. Speck to Burkett, Ind., to remain until June 28, when we open “fire and hail and blood’’ on the people of Antwerp. Pray for us.

B. E. Warren and S. L. Speck.

Dear Saints of God: I feel like writing my testimony to the glory of God. I was bitten by a sand viper snake to day, and I took it to the Lord in prayer and he has healed me. Oh I can not praise him enough for it! I want to shout to the world for him. I want to live true to him forever. Amen.

To all the Saints, Greeting: This morning finds me sweetly saved and sanctified with the victory in my soul. I presented my body a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is my reasonable service, and he so graciously filled my heart with his love. He is wonderfully leading and calling me as he did the fishermen to forsake all and follow him. He has anointed me to preach his gospel to a lost and ruined world, and I am responding to the call. I praise God that he does so wonderfully help us when we forsake all and follow him.

It has been about five years since I first heard the gospel preached in all its purity, and the Lord said to me “This is the way, walk ye in it.” I soon gave my heart to God, and oh what joy and peace he gave to me! Joy unspeakable and full of glory; peace that flows as a river.

There are not very many in this section of country who are serving the God of heaven. But praise the Lord, there are a few who do not bow the knee to Baal, and are holding up the true light. If any of God’s people feel led we would be glad to have you come and assist us in spreading holiness here. We hold services at Norfolk every Sabbath. Should any of God’s people come this way you will receive a hearty welcome at the home of Wm. Manske Norfolk, Neb. or myself, living about ten miles north west of Norfolk.

Dear Saints of God: I believe it would be to the glory of God to write my testimony again. In 1887 I was saved by the blood of Christ, went and joined a sect called the Baptist church and licensed to preach for that sect only, to which I obeyed for one year. But God saw fit in mercy to send some of his saints here to preach the truth, and wife and I heard the call, “Come out of her my people,” and we did so; and since that time I have been preaching for God and for the salvation of souls, and the dear Lord is blessing my labors. I am so glad that I can direct people to God’s church in place of sects. Oh dear reader, just think of a man claiming to be sent of God to preach the gospel, that is a slave to tobacco and strong drink! such was the case with me; but when God brought me down to the foot of the cross he did wonderfully sanctify me and cleanse me from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit. The devil tried to make me believe that I would die if I quit my tobacco, and bless the Lord I died out to that nasty sin and all others. No man can preach the word of God with tobacco in his mouth, but they can preach a sect doctrine, for I tried it. Oh let all who read this search the word to see if they are clean. Pray much for the little ones at this place. Your brother in Christ,

John Jones.

THE CHARGE PROVED BY THE BIBLE.

_____

IN an article a few weeks ago warning the people against the poison sheet called the STUMBLING STONE, we called it a “lying sheet.” A man, who doubtless possesses the same pernicious spirit of that paper writes us, saying we do not sustain the charge with proofs. To all who have seen one copy of the S. S. and know and love the truth, no other proofs are needed. But as the party writing us says that “not one in twenty readers of our articles have seen the S. S.” I promised him to give them some proofs of our statement.

In the first place I will call your attention to the word of God as recorded in the fourth chapter and first verse of Hosea. Where God says, he “has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land;” and again it is recorded in Rom. 3:4. “Let God be true and every man a liar.” It is a real fact that God has a controversy with every Christ-contradicting heretic in the earth to day, and that controversy will end in the destruction of all those who know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.” See Jude 14:15, also 2 Thess. 1:7, 8. And as God has commanded us to “let God be true and every man a liar” (in this great controversy of course), and as the S. S. and its blind advocates have a controversy with Christ and his apostles; teaching the people that they ought not and should not do the things that Christ and his apostles taught us that we ought to and should do, I feel it my duty to take my Master’s side of the controversy.

Jude says they speak evil of the things (ordinances) that they know not. Woe unto them, for they have gone in the ways of Cain (having no faith in things taught or commanded them of God) and run greedily in the errors of Balaam for reward (becoming false prophets and putting a stumbling block in the way of God’s people to cause them to disobey him) and perished in the gainsayings of Core. See Numbers 16th chapter. One of those modern Core-ites, contended with me not long ago that his mission was to baptize with the Holy Ghost, and that he had baptized many souls with this heavenly baptism. He also said that Christ never commanded any man to baptize with water, but with the Holy Ghost. Thus setting himself up in the temple of God showing that they are gods, thus they fulfill the scripture concerning themselves. Like Cain, have no faith in what God commanded them to do. Like Balaam put a stumbling block (stone) in the way of God’s people to cause them to disobey him. And like Core despise the commission (to preach the gospel and baptize with water) and presume to fill the high priest (Christ) office, and pretend to do his work; baptize with the Holy Spirit.

I will now proceed to show where their lying comes in. God’s word says let God be true and every man a liaris, (in this controversy). Only a few of the many Bible-disputing ideas advance by these anti-christ workers will be necessary to show that all said about the S. S. is true. In the first place they contend that the ordinances of Christ are non-essentials, but Jesus says, “If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.” Again, “If ye abide in me and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will and it shall be done.” Again, Why call ye me Lord Lord, and do not the things I say?” John says, “Whatsoever we ask we receive of him, because we keep his commandments and do those things that please him.” Thus we see that both Christ and the apostles taught that these things were essential to our happiness, our success, and to a Christian character, to say the least of them. Hence the difference between the STUMBLING STONE and the Bible.

Again they teach that the ordinances were all of the Old Testament, and that the New Testament had no ordinances, and that no ordinances were enjoined upon the church of God. But Paul writes to the church of God at Corinth, saying, “Keep the ordinances as I delivered them to you.” 1 Cor. 11:1. And said, “For I received of the Lord that which I delivered unto you.” Then shows that one of them was the Lord’s Supper. 1 Cor. 11:22-25. Again he says in the same letter, “If any man think himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of God.” 1 Cor. 14:37. Thus Paul writes that he received the ordinances of the Lord, and delivered them to the church as he had received them, and commanded the church to keep them as he had delivered them, assuring them that the things he wrote to them were the commandments of God.

This was not written to the church at Corinth only; but to all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus — 1 Cor. 1:2, 3. Then it is a real Bible fact that the ordinances were delivered to Paul by the Lord and delivered to the church by Paul as he had received them, and the Lord commanded the church then and all others who call upon his name everywhere to keep them, and says they are the commandments of God. Then Jesus says, “Why call ye me Lord, Lord, and do not the things I tell you?” Again “Not everyone who shall say unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom, but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Now those Stumbling Stone-ites flatly contradict all that Christ and the apostles say about this, and affirm that all ordinances were of the old covenant and were delivered to Moses, and through him to the Jews. Now as God has said, “Let God be true and every man a liar” that contradicts him, we are bound to acknowledge when we consider this dispute that the S. S. is a lying sheet. But they say that the ordinances of which Paul writes in 1 Cor. 11:1 allude not to the Lord’s supper, baptism and feet washing. But Paul assures us that that was just what he was writing about in verses 22-25, he specifies and describes the Lord’s supper as one. This removes every doubt from honest hearts. But Mr. Lieman Johnson says the Lord’s supper and baptism were things of the law or Old Testament wand as done away about A. D. 64, but God’s word teaches us that John the Baptist received his commission of God in the wilderness Lu. 3:2 and that the Lord sent him to baptize with water, John 1:33, and that John’s ministry was the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ.” Jesus and Paul both say that the Lord’s supper is of the New Testament, Luke 22:19, 20; 1 Cor. 1 11:22-25 and was to continue till Jesus comes or to “show forth his death till he comes.” And Paul assures us that to keep them is the commandments of God, 1 Cor. 11:1, 15, 1 Cor. 14:37 and is obligatory to all or upon all that shall call upon the name of the Lord. 1 Cor. 1:2. And now, as John says, he that says he knows the Lord and keeps not his commandments, is a liar and the truth is not in him.” And as Mr. Lieman Johnson does profess to know him and does not keep his commandments we are forced to conclude that he is the man.

Now dear ones, can anything be plainer than the contrast between the teaching of the Holy Bible and the S. S.? They are surely as far apart as east and west, light and darkness, hell and heaven. Truth and error can surely display no greater contrast. Therefore all who will admit that God is true in this controversy must admit that the S. S. is a lying sheet. There are some few of the many reasons why I charged that sheet and its editor with falsehood. In regard to their vile slander on God’s true saints submit the following lines of poetry, which I hope may do some soul good.

Vile slanderer, the foe of men,
Go hide thee in thy native den;
Go seek thy home in deserts foul,
Where serpents hiss and tigers howl.

Meet messmates there of such as thee,
Go seek the scenes that yield them glee;
Go join the prowling carnivore
And shun the blessed light of day.

The serpents that in secret lurk
Shall teach thee well to do thy work;
O you may teach them yet more guile,
And how to poison with a smile.

The tiger too shall he your friend,
And teach you how the weak rend;
How to secrete the foul intent,
While on your work of ruin bent.

There shalt thou find congenial deeds,
For there the helpless victim bleeds;
There shalt thou learn to deal the blow
That lays defenceless virtue low.

Thus taught to blast the victim’s fame,
Behind his back pollute his name;
In secret whispers spread disgrace,
And lie without a blushing face.

Let him not see the band that smites,
Let him not feel the tongue that bites;
Let him not know your flatt’ring breath
Conveys the poison air of death.

Yet know that thou and he must meet
Before the awful judgment seat;
How will you stand in that great day?
How wash thy poison words away?

You despise the just and holy man,
Do all to ruin him you can;
I’d rather all your stigma bear
Than be condemned a slanderer there.

To all God’s Little Ones, Greeting: I am saved just now and enjoying the sweet blessings of our Savior. Oh how sweet indeed to walk in this narrow way! I have been saved nearly a year now and am not tired of this blessed way. Oh praise his holy name! Please pray that I may be sanctified to do the whole will of God. Pray for my unsaved husband. I have come out of sectism. A dear sister here taught me that there is but one church, and but one way, and that is Christ. Now I want all God’s little ones to pray for me as soon as they read this that I may be healed of a bad affliction, and sanctified, and God shall have all the glory. Your sister in the love of Jesus,

Sarah Janes.

Dear Saints: May grace, mercy and peace ever abide with you. I thank God for this privilege that he gives to me to write to the many dear saints. I am praising Him for his precious saving power. He saves me and keeps me each day that I live. Bless the Lord! I am so glad that God has given me victory over Satan. I have no one to look to but Jesus, and he is a precious help in every time of need. I do love the GOSPEL TRUMPET; it contains so many precious testimonies. I intend to serve God as long as I live, let life be long or short. There is nothing in this world for me to turn back to. We are few in number here at this place. We have a precious little prayer meeting; have very good attendance every Sunday evening. I earnestly request you, dear ones, to pray for me. Your humble sister, trusting in Jesus. Amen.

Dear Trumpet Family, Greeting: I feel led to write a few lines. May God ever bless and keep you. I praise God for salvation. I am saved right now by the blood of Jesus, and his wonderful love and saying grace. I am so glad my name is written in heaven, in the Lamb’s book of life. It has been a little over a year since God sent the light to this place. He found me in Babylon, but as soon as I heard the word of God in its purity I was ready to come out in the light. I very soon saw that I was nothing but a sinner and never had been. Oh what an awful condition to be in! I wanted to get to heaven, and was trying to take all the pleasures of the world along, just as my sect brothers and sisters did. But blessed be the name of God, I am dead to the world. Oh what a joy to live for God! I find he is able to. keep me, and I don’ need to have my name written down in any book here below. God can take care of that. Now dear brothers and sisters, let us pray for each other that we may be kept with but one mind, and that the mind of Christ. I ask an interest in your prayers. May God bless and keep you all. Your sister,

Jane Hinton.

Dear Family of God: I write to let you know how the Master’s work is progressing in this part of the vineyard. I am happy to report victory over the world, the flesh and the devil. Praise God, who giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. The dear Lord has called me into the work to help rescue perishing souls. The dear Lord wonderfully blessed my soul in delivering his blessed word. Praise his dear name! I believe there are a few honest souls in Babylon who are willing to come out. I have been saved about five months. The Lord showed me when I was first saved that he wanted me to preach, but it seemed as if I just could not obey. I kept battling with the devil and praying until I got victory over him; and I am just moving out and getting into the harness. I praise God for a pleasure that the world cannot give nor take away. I feel that I am to get out from home and work, but owing to financial circumstances I can’t leave just now; so I am going to do what I can around home until Father opens up the way for me to move. I am just looking for him to clear the way also to give me a co-laborer, because I don’t believe it is God’s will for me to work alone, for I am so young; I am only twenty years old. I would be glad if some brother would come to my assistance. Bro. Ostis Wilson and wife held a meeting with us a few weeks ago. Dear saints, pray much for me, and the work at this place. Your saved brother,

Robt. L. Farquar.

Dear Saints of God: I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony to the TRUMPET. I thank the dear Lord for leading me out of darkness into his marvelous light. I praise God for full and free salvation. I was converted when I was about sixteen years of age, then I joined the so called Christian Church, and lived as near right as I could, but I had been thirsting for salvation for those many long years, until last fall when the Spirit came to me, but I rejected it at first. But felt like I could not live if I did not yield, so I fell on my knees by my bedside and prayed, continued in prayer, and in a moment the dear Lord spoke peace to my soul, and I got up shouting and praising God, for my burden was a gone and my bodily afflictions were also healed; and oh how sweet my sleep was that night. I have not heard a sermon preached since I came out in this beautiful evening light. I am praying for God to send some of his ministers here to preach the pure gospel. Let us remember the words of our dear Savior, Repent ye therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord. Now I say to all that have not been made perfect in love, Never turn back, though many trials may befall you; never mind them. Only watch and pray. If you feel heavy hearted, take it to Jesus in prayer, for our heavenly Father knoweth what things ye have need of before ye ask him. I am sanctified, made white and clean. Praise His holy name! Your sister kept by the power of God,

Adeline Huffman.

Dear Saints: I feel that it is my duty to write my testimony. I have been a great sufferer for two years with fits, and although yet a young woman, could find no relief. I had been treated by five doctors, beside trying other medicine (patent medicines). But nothing seemed to do me any good at all, till at last God in this wide mercy sent dear Bro. W. W Bradley, J. Cole and W. J. Smith to trust in Christ as our real Savior. One night in March of 1893, I went to where they were holding meeting, and while Bro. Bradley was preaching I was taken very bad with one of those awful fits. My husband and other friends carried me out of the louse and took me to the house of Bro. Kramer a few rods away, where I continued to have those spells until the services were closed at the meeting. The brethren came down to 3ro. Kramer’s and covenanted together and prayed for me; and glory to God, he has healed me. To his hallowed name be all the glory for ever. And now dear saints, I ask your prayers that I may remain in good health and continue true to God. I write this only for the glory of God and the good of others, that some poor sufferer may be encouraged to trust God through Jesus Christ. I give God all the praise for the gift. of his Son, through whose stripes I was healed, by whose blood I was saved; and for his precious promises, and for sending his servants to teach me to believe and trust him. Your sister in Christ,

Hattie F. Vining.

I feel it would be to the glory of God for me to write my testimony. I am praising God for what he he has done for us, and for the healing of my wife of those terrible convulsions, from which she seemeed to suffer death; and for saving us from sin and sectism, and delivering us from Babylon. We were members of different sects, but glory to Jesus, we are now in the one body of one Lord, one faith, and one baptism, saved and healed through God’s mercies, to whose be all the glory. Your brother in Christ,

To the Saints of God: Those who sanctify the Lord God in their hearts. 1 Pet. 3:15. As it has pleased God to bring to my hand the GOSPEL TRUMPET, I feel led to write a few lines of testimony. I have been a professor of Christ for more than eight years, and as I walked in the light as I had received it, about two months ago God was pleased to call me out of darkness into his marvelous light. Then it was that the veil fell from my eyes, that I might know whom I had believed. Then was I freed from the curse. Praise his name forever! Then it was I saw how many people were being led by blind leaders, and precious souls going to perdition, yet expecting to hear that “Well done.” Then it was that I realized that I was among a people having a form of godliness; but when judgment was laid to the line and righteousness to the plummet, and their refuge of lies swept away, it was a vexation to them to understand the report, for they would not endure sound doctrine. Not wishing to have any fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, and seeing that their sacrifices were an abomination and their solemn meeting, iniquity, I came out from among them to be separate. God did wonderfully bless me in that step. Elder E. M. Chase, who was the Baptist minister getting into the fulness of the gospel, came out at the same time. We two are here alone with God, who gave me power in the using of the sword of might, or his word which is sharper than any two- edged sword. But the power has been taken from me, though I am free from my sins, and I want to request an interest in your prayers that God may renew that power for the pulling down of the strongholds of sin and iniquity. We would love to have some of God’s people here to present the truth, but as we cannot now send for them, pray for us that we may present the gospel in its plainness and simplicity, in a way and manner that may be pleasing in the sight of the blessed Master. Remember us before the throne of His mercy. Now may the grace, mercy and peace that passeth all understanding, be with all the saints of God evermore. Your brother in the light,

Wm. Patterson.
