I AM HEALED.

_____

With afflictions great and sore,
As if bound by Satan’s band.
For thy healing mercy to implore.
Lord, I came at thy command.

CHORUS: — I am healed, I know I am.
I am healed this very hour,
For my Jesus says I am.
And I feel his mighty power.

The’ my faith was very weak,
Jesus said so sweet and kind,
I will surely heal you ev’ry whit,
And will break the chains that bind.

Then his proffered hand I took,
And the vict’ry soon was won,
I received the perfect healing touch,
And the work was quickly done.

Praise his name forever more!
I will tell to all around,
How the precious gift of healing pow’r.
Thro’ the Spirit, we have found.

THE HOLY GHOST OUR TEACHER.

_____

“Will a man rob God? yet ye have robbed me.” – Mal. 3:8.

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all thin and bring all things to your remembrance whatsoever I have said unto you.” John 14:26.

MY mind has been very much exercised on this line of thought for some time. We see the office of the Holy Ghost is to teach and to bring all things to our remembrance. Now dear souls, do we let the Holy Ghost have a chance to do his office work in us, or do we substitute anything else instead? I will give you a little of my past experience on that line. When I first started out in God’s work I was so ignorant, and my privileges had been so limited, the dear Lord did wonderfully help me in different ways. He would bring grand illustrations to my mind that would just suit the occasion, but after awhile, unconcious to myself, I began leaning on the illustrations rather than on God, and when I would go to a new place, I thought I had to make use of every illustration and every witty thing I had ever said before. Soon I began to get tired of myself and found myself empty, and it did not seem as though God was helping me any. So I enquired of the Lord what this meant, and he showed me that I had a little groove I wanted to run in, and wanted to say everything he had ever given me before, and that I had not been looking to him as I should have done for something new and fresh, and he had to let me run my rounds before he could give me the help I needed. Well, you may have an idea how ashamed I felt. Truly it was a good lesson. I saw how I had been robbing the Holy Ghost of his privilege of bringing things both new and old to my mind. I resolved to do so no more; and oh how nice it was to go to the dear Lord and get something new and fresh every time. That gives the Lord a chance to talk to us and to unfold his word to us. Then we will not have to deal out stale food to the people, and also starve our own souls.

Now when I see God’s ministers get up before a congregation and take out a text-book of someone else’s compiling and go to giving out the scriptures the Holy Ghost has given some one else and try to preach from them, it comes flashing to my mind, Are they not robbing God? How do they know the thoughts or the unfolding God had given those who had arranged the scripture lesson? Do they not in the first place rob the Holy Ghost of the privilege of arranging a lesson for them, and showing new light and new beauties on the same? And do they not fail to get the refreshing their own souls need as well, and fail to deal out to the people what they need? Their preaching becomes irksome, both to themselves and to their hearers.

“Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, saith the Lord, that steal my words, every one from his neighbor.” — Jer. 23:30. Now dear souls, this seems to me a serious matter. Will you not give it earnest thought, and pray over it, and see if the Lord doesn’t want to talk to you about it? Text books and Bibles gotten up by holy men and women, are all right in their place and help much in the searching of the scriptures, but for Jesus’ sake do not dishonor God and make them a curse by retying on them instead of the Holy Ghost. I have seen holiness ministers, or professing to be, sitting or lounging around when they should have been searching the Word of God, and on their knees in earnest prayer, looking to God for the unfolding of his word and for special anointing to preach the same. And when they came to preach they would take a Bible lesson that somebody else had prepared, and try to talk from it, and I tell you, it was very dry preaching, like old dry fodder, and saints and sinners would both get very tired long before they were through preaching. Now is that God-honoring? I have suffered enough over it and I feel that God wants somebody else to suffer a little too. Are such ministers doing the people justice? or are they doing God or themselves justice either in so doing?

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth is come, he will guide you into all truth, for he shall not speak of himself, but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak, and he shall show you things to come.” — Jno. 16:13. Again, “Open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.” — Psa. 81:10. Give the Holy Ghost a chance and see if he will not fill his office. I have seen preachers who, when they begun to backslide, substitute others’ compiling in the place of the real anointing they would have had, if they had been clear in their own souls. But remember Saul’s armor did not fit David; he lad to use his little stones and sling. 1 Sam. 17:39-41. Oh for Jesus’ sake trust in che Lord fully. They that trust in the Lord shall not lack any good thing. Do not dishonor God any more by substituting anything else for the Holy Ghost, and the benefits we receive by searching the Word. If we use somebody else’s message instead of going to God for ourselves and getting it first handed, we are no better than sectarians, because that is the way they do.

Another way people rob God is when they profess to trust God for the healing of their bodies, and advocate and preach healing, and then will take medicine for every little ailment, and even go to the doctor for medicine. Is that trusting God? Is it honoring God? Is it doing the people justice? I want to say it is not only robbing God, but it is robbing themselves, and if they would only take their own case to God in prayer and trust God for an increase of faith, it would not only be a great benefit to them and develop themselves spiritualty, but it would strengthen the faith of those around them. I know of some professing to have the gift of healing, to lay on hands for the heal-  of the sick, and they themselves rely on medicine and doctors. Now is that consistent, when Jesus died for our sickness as well as for our sins? Matt. 8-17. “Will a man rob God? yet ye have robbed me.” — Mal. 3:8. Now remember while you are robbing God you are robbing your own souls and dwarfing your own experience.

Now let us look at another way that people rob God and also themselves. We hear some say, especially those out in the work, that they are trusting God for their support and they do not believe in begging money. But they will hint around about how little money they have and how little they have received, and even ask for money for themselves. Now is that trusting God? Is that giving the Lord a fair show? The main cause of it is, they do not have the trust they ought to have. They have not honored God by relying on his promises, and have not given him a chance to see how good he is to fulfill the same to them, which would cause him to be honored in the eyes of the people, where he is now dishonored. Oh magnify the grace of God by trusting him fully. They that trust in the Lord shall not lack any good thing. I want to say that whenever you act out unbelief or distrust, you rob God of a chance to prove his word true, and rob your own souls of the benefit you would otherwise get. Oh let us take God’s precious promises, like so many checks on Heaven’s bank and by faith get them cashed, for by so doing we honor God and our faith is increased. I have proven God true in so doing many a time, and he has never disappointed me once.

The dear Lord has never led me once to take any one else’s Bible lesson and preach from it; and I am thankful for it. He has led me to lean entirety on himself, and he has supplied all my needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Oh praise his dear name! He is all we take him for by faith; yes praise God, “according to thy faith, so be it unto thee.” They that trust in the Lord shall not be confounded. Then why not trust him fully, and God will honor your faith and trust gloriously. “Prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” Amen.

__________

TO THE WATCHMEN.

_____

WE read in Isa. 62:6, “I have set watchmen upon thy walls, oh Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night. Ye that make mention of the Lord keep not silence.”

What kind of watchmen? Those who will not hold their peace. Isa. 58:1 — “Cry aloud, spare, not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.” Notice why God wants watchmen that will cry. We read in Ezek. 34:11, 12, “For thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out. As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.” The dark day is Romanism and the cloudy day is Protestantism.

Now God’s people have been scattered in the various divisions in the cloudy day; so he has commanded us, blow ye the trumpet in Zion, sound an alarm in my holy mountain, let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of the Lord cometh. One of the signs of his coming is the gathering together of his people, where they will be of one heart and one soul, which, when this is done, will complete the church, the bride the Lamb’s wife. She is the bride of Christ, and now she is making herself ready. God’s watchmen will not cease to cry until all his people have come to the unity of the faith which was delivered to the saints. Jesus said in John 10:4, he goeth before them and the sheep follow, for they know his voice. And a stranger they will not follow. Now when the trumpet is blown by God’s anointed ones, the sheep, which are God’s people in the various divisions (sects). hear his voice, for when we are wholly consecrated, our voice is his. Luke 10:16, “He that heareth you heareth me.” John said he was only a voice crying in the wilderness. So all God needs is a voice and he will talk.

God has said he will send for many hunters and fishers, and he is calling and sending for many, and you who have heard the voice of God calling you to this great battle, do not be in a hurry or uneasy, for fear you will not, get into the field. He will send for you when you are qualified for the place, and now many we believe are called who run before they are sent, and often become discouraged and falter by the way. You who have made sure your calling, and whom the signs have been following, do not stay out of the field to engage in manual labor to provide the necessities of life, for he who has called you has said, My God shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory. Oh how beautiful, that God has put the members in the body as it has pleased him! — 1 Cor. 12:18. Some have their call to the field and others to work at their home, who if faithful, will all receive their reward.

What a wonderful and large fishing place we have! Go ye into all the world. Matt. 28:18. And the same for hunting. God’s people as well as his ministers are not confined to a small pen. Psa. 23, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.” Praise the Lord! He maketh me to lie down, that is, he giveth rest. Oh how beautiful! We are not led in the paths of sin as many think. But we that believe do enter into rest, and there remaineth a rest for the people of God. Many think this rest comes after death, but praise the Lord, we are enjoying it just now. We see the great need of God’s ministers keeping humble and consecrated (as we see the end approaching), and hastening to the battle and staying in the field. Our prayer is that all who have the call may realize the worth of perishing souls. We were once visiting in a place where God had a growing little church, and was using one very young in experience in putting forth the truth and feeding the flock. But after a few months we were permitted to visit the same place, and we found the elder had become discouraged and pressed down of the enemy and cares of this life, and oh how sad we were to find he had neglected his duty. The enemy had come in, and poor souls were hungry, starving for the real word.

“Then go forth, go forth with weeping,
Bearing precious seed;
Time is flying, souls are dying;
He’ll supply thy every need.””

__________

QUESTION.

_____

Is it necessary for us to use the word colored, and white saint? Jesus says, “Go ye into all the world, and preach my gospel to every creature,” without saying a word about black or white people. Your sister,

Jane Williams.

ANSWER. “God has made of one blood all nations to dwell upon the earth.” And of course all colors of mankind have originated from his original creation in the garden of Eden. God himself is no respecter of persons and colors, and neither should we be. Therefore, wherein it is not necessary to do so, we should not distinguish between color. While facts clearly show a natural inequality of races, there is a Christian equality in the love of God that knows no partiality. But this impartial love to all God’s creatures must be exercised within the bounds of the word of God. And that requires us to be subject to the laws of the country in which we dwell. And since the Southern States do make a distinction between the white and colored races, and demand a certain separation of the same in trains, depots, public congregations, etc., it is necessary, under the existing laws for God’s children to be subject to the same. Even should it be thought that the law, is unjust, and contrary to the principles of righteousness to, “resist not evil,” and “suffer wrong rather than to do wrong,” are duties when wrong comes in the form of legislation, as well as by an individual. The religion of Christ does not encourage anarchy. It teaches its sons to endure patiently under existing laws even though they be mingled with oppression and injustice. For instance, the spirit of Christianity is against war. Nevertheless, John the forerunner of Christ, when enquired of by the soldiers what they should do, did not advise them to desert, but he told them to “do violence to no man, and be content with their wages.” Luke 3:14. Again, the whole tenor of Bible Christianity is against human slavery. And yet where men were in bondage, the scriptures do not encourage them to ignore existing laws and their master’s right of property under the same. Saved masters were admonished to “give unto their servants that which is just and right.” Col. 4:1. But were not commanded to release them. In Eph. 6:5; 1 Tim. 6:1-4; Titus 2:9, believing slaves are counseled to obey their masters, and be subject not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward. And, the Apostle is so positive that this counsel is right, that he adds, “if any man teach otherwise,” etc., “he is proud,” etc.

When the Lord captured and converted a runaway slave of Philemon, Paul sent him back to his master. See Phil. 10:16. In so doing, he recognized one sinner as being the lawful slave of Philemon.

In the by-gone days of our great national sirs, pro-slavery men interpreted the above scriptures in favor of the wicked slave-holding business. But that is a mistake. It simply shows that the word of God does not encourage anarchy. Its perfect grace sets a man free in Christ, and makes him contented, yea, and infinitely happy, even while in the most cruel bondage to man, or confined in prison. And besides this, it, like the silent, but potent leaven transforms society into more noble and humane sentiments, leading to more just and wholesome laws. But the same heavenly wisdom that did not wake the prejudice and opposition of the Roman Government, by influencing its soldiers to abandon the army, and that in all nations, did not even interfere with existing slave laws, but counseled subjection to the masters, we say that same holy prudence will conform to the present existing laws, respecting the colored race in Southern States, while those in authority think it necessary to have such laws. Of course such laws are made for the lawless, and the good and obedient are willing to suffer the apparent injustice under the same, rather than hinder the gospel of Christ. Since the word requires us to be subject tb the powers that be. But aside from the requirements of the law, let love be without partiality. Amen.

IS IT A SIN TO DO GOOD?

_____

A brother writes us as if he thought it necessary to forbid a certain brother and sister in Chicago to labor for the salvation of perishing souls; because the brother has been unfortunate in past life, and now finds himself joined in marriage under circumstances in which the scriptures do not sanction marriage, it is erroniously thought to be a sin for them to do good, to persuade sinners to repent and turn to God. But the brother and sister claim that they entered that relation in all good faith, supposing from the grants of the law, and the instruction of their religious teachers, they had a clear right to do so. Under these circumstances they claim the Lord has not convicted them of a duty to separate.

Now we know that in another respect in which the Bible forbids marriage, namely, that of a saint and a sinner — 2 Cor. 6:14, 1 Cor. 7:36, —  when, however, they are married, and in that condition, the New Testamant does not require their separation. But actually forbids a believing husband or wife to put away an unbelieving companion. 1 Cor. 7:12, 13. The word of God also gives no sanction to marrying another while a former companion yet lives. 1 Cor. 7:36, Rom. 7:3. But if such a marriage has been entered into when the parties were in sin, or ignorance of the teaching of the Bible in the matter and have now become saved, the word does not tell us, as in the former case, that they can, and should now live together, nor yet does it demand their separation. And in the absence of any command in the word of God, we are left without authority, to either sanction or condemn their continuation as man and wife. What shall we then do in such cases? We know no consistent course to pursue but to commit them to God, and to their own conscience. We should solemnly charge them, in the fear of God, to rest not until they know what his will is concerning them, and obey his voice at any sacrifice. If God convicts their conscience and judgement that they should separate, and they say and act to the contrary, they must forfeit the grace of God, and his Spirit will leave them, and the spirit and actions of such will soon betray their graceless hearts. They cannot have fellowship with God nor his people, and then of course, after duly admonishing such, we must reject them as not of God. But if they say that God permits them to live together we cannot condemn or reject them while the real fruits of the Spirit of God are manifest in their lives. Such should therefore walk very humbly before God, and be so filled with the Spirit, grace, love, meekness and power of the Lord, that all men may read them as the living epistles of Christ. The unfortunate circumstance under which they are married, often expose them to be called in question by such as are not sufficiently clear to judge wholly by the Spirit; therefore they should give the more earnest heed to walk very close to God, that all may see his glory upon them, and thus cut off the questionings that Satan would raise in the minds of God’s weak children. Owing to the teaching of the Word against the contraction of such marriages, they should not be surprised if some look with suspicious eyes upon them, and they should be prepared with all patience, and longsuffering, to endure some buffeting, to only return love and kindness. But if they get offended and show a chafed spirit, do not think it strange that man should doubt the approval of God upon you.

And to all who name the name of the Lord, and are called his saints, we sincerely admonish you, for Jesus’ sake, be so filled and illuminated with the Spirit of God, that you will be able to judge all men by the Spirit, and not by appearance. God looks at the heart, and unless you can, by the power of fellowship, and discerning of the Spirit, know the state of men’s hearts, you are not prepared to judge as God does; not able to “judge righteous judgment.” The motives that have led to certain steps in life are so varied, and the circumstances and degrees of ignorance and knowledge so different, that it is impossible to administer the same judgment to all who have even taken the same outward course. For that reason Christ has forbidden us to judge from appearance. If then, we are not able to judge men by the light of the Spirit, we should not judge at all, except when we see men knowingly violating the Word of God. By such outward fruits we cannot help but know them.

Our observation has demonstrated the fact that guilt, or innocence in the case of unscriptural marriage is chiefly dependent upon the knowledge, or ignorance of the scriptures on this subject, at the time of entering the same. No person with an understanding of the Word, as it reads and as all saints teach it, can marry where either of the two has a living companion, and retain salvation. In fact, all that have tried it have gone to the devil. Even there is a case in Michigan, where the man claims that his previous marriage was an illegal one, and that therefore he had a right to marry again. But whether he had been scripturally married or not, he had actually been married, and lived some years together, and have children, and therefore, to marry another, to say the least, was not “shunning the appearance of evil.” Hence, was disobeying the Word of God in that particular, if no more. The saints knew and saw it would be a detriment to the cause of Christ, and by many of us he was faithfully warned and admonished. But the hardhearted indifference, and sour manner in which he resented these sincere efforts, clearly showed that if he had not backslidden before the marriage was contracted, he had gone to the devil in doing so. And of course he has no part nor lot in the household of God; and should he presume to go out under the garb of a preacher, it will be the duty of some one to more personally expose him. And if this man goes to perdition, having yet a technical plea of legality in his favor, how much more all they who knowing the prohibitory voice of God, marry a second companion, with another lawful husband or wife living.

But, finally brethren, where men and women claim innocence and acceptance with God in an unscriptural marriage, because they knew not the word of God, it is our duty to receive them as God’s children so long as they show the fruits of his Spirit. If they labor to get men and women saved to God, forbid them not, nor hinder their usefulness. However such, according to the inspired discipline of the church of God, which is the word of God, cannot be ordained as either ministerial or local elders; but against doing good there is no law in the kingdom of heaven.

Bro. Wm. Halbesleben of Rice Lake, Wis. desires the privilege of laboring with some old experienced, able and qualified minister of Christ, that he might be built up and established in the present truth and work of the evening light. Who can go to him? — as there is a ripe and large field of labor in Wisconsin. This brother was a licensed and ordained F. M. minister, hut he fully embraced the evening light, and the gospel in its fullness, while we were at Rice Lake, Wisconsin.

Dear Saints of God: May the blessings of God rest upon you all. Dear brethren and sisters, I am walking in the evening light. I do thank God for the light I have received from God, and I am free from all sects, creeds and opinions of men. Glory to God! I have been scattering Gospel Trumpet papers and tracts, in Carmi, and every where all this summer, and I am glad to say that in giving the papers and tracts, I have been sowing good seed, for several have come out of Babylon. To God be all the glory.

We will begin a meeting here at Carmi, Oct. 1, and we want help. Who will come and help us preach the full gospel in this town? We want some good workers to come. We would be glad if some one would come that could bring a tent. Let us hear who will come. I am confident that we can do great good in this town by holding a meeting. If any of you feel led of the Lord, to come, write me at Carmi, Illinois.

Dear Brethren: May grace and peace be multiplied. I am glad to report a complete salvation from all sin. Oh the joy that obedience brings. God is anointing me for the work whereunto he has called me. The grove meeting near Portland was a success. There were nine consecrations. One of them being an old man from Ohio who had never heard the evening light doctrine preached before. After emptying his pockets of his tobacco and giving it up in his heart he soon found pardon. Most of the others had once been saved; may God help them to stay on God in truth, having on the gospel shoes which will prevent all their steps from sliding. The ministers present were Sister Stetler, Bro’s Bragg, Longerbone, and Randolph. Your redeemed brother,

Readers of the Trumpet: May the Lord bless you all. I am glad to report victory in my soul over all the powers of darkness. Glory to God in the highest! I got home from a precious meeting. Eleven followed the Lord in baptism. Several more will follow soon. This was a new place where the truth had never been preached before, but praise the Lord, it found a resting place there. The work is wonderful in these parts. Pray that the work may increase in the South more and more. Pray for me, that I may be true in all things. Yours in the perfect peace,

Dearly Beloved Brethren in Christ: We feel that it would be to the glory of God to inform you through the TRUMPET, that God is wonderfully working upon the hearts of the people in these parts. The New Carlisle camp-meeting was one of the most powerful camp-meetings we have attended this season. About forty souls were born into the kingdom, and a great many were sanctified wholly. The ordinances of feet washing and the Lord’s supper were observed with the blessings of God upon all the saints. Bro. and Sister Clayton from Pa., and Bro. Jas. Kriebel of Ill. were present to help in the meeting. After the camp-meeting, our company held a ten days’ tabernacle meeting at Lawrenceville, Ohio. Little more than the sowing of good seed was done during this meeting. One or two souls were saved during the two meetings. Baptism was administered on three occasions. Seven

were immersed on each occasion. From Lawrenceville, we came to Wiseman. Clark Co., O., a place where the pure gospel has never been preached before. The people are becoming deeply interested, and some are getting saved. Bro. and Sister Warren are not with us in this meeting, owing to the serious illness of Sister Warren. Let all the saints pray for her recovery, and for our success in this and future meetings. Yours and Christ’s.

Gospel Trumpet, Greeting: Home again. Closed the meeting near Butterfield, after three weeks hard labor. Fifty-two were saved and sanctified. Some old gray-haired men were converted and sanctified; they were delivered from tobacco and cleaned up for God. Amen. We preached the word straight, against shows, festivals, church parties, tobacco and all such. Praise God I wish I could have had some papers for distribution. May God bless and keep all his children. Amen. My post-office is Granby, Mo. Anyone desiring to correspond with me will remember my standing office. I desire the prayers of all the saints for myself and family. My testimony is that God saves my soul from all sin. I know I am under the blood just now. Amen. Yours in the war for life. To all God’s Children Scattered abroad, Greeting: Our souls are joyful in glory and triumphing over all the works of the devil. Amen! Well it has been some time since we have sent in a report as we have been helping in camp meetings and others have sent in the news. Our last report was from Oklahoma. From there we went to Topeka. Kan., camp meeting, and there God worked to some extent and a few souls were saved, but not the work done I would like to have seen. From there we went to Hollenburg camp meeting. God gave us a glorious feast of fat things. Many saints were present and much good was done. It was truly the best camp meeting in the West this summer. From there we went to Arkansas City camp meeting. Some good was done and I trust some good seed sown. Quite a number of God’s dear children were present, and labored earnestly for the salvation of souls. We came to this place the 15th. Brother W. A. Haynes and Brother Kinzie and Brother and Sister Austin and Sister Birdie Fink are all present and are laborers together with God in the battle. Large crowds in attendance and God is working, but the battle is hot and the enemy is mad because he is being exposed. Pray much for us.

We visited with the little ones in the new house in West Monterey. Was a glorious feast to our souls. Much good accomplished in removing prejudice. Souls were saved, others sanctified in Christ Jesus. On the 18th we had the pleasure of baptizing five in the beautiful Alleghany stream, and one of the number. Belle Fleming, my wife’s sister, who came out of the liquid grave with the picture of the newness of life on her face. The dear Lord also added one more to our company by sending our much beloved little Brother Clarna E. Xander, (of Lawrenceville, Ohio), for our alto singer. Dear Saints of God, Greeting: Grace and peace to you be multiplied. We have been at home since July 8, on account of our sick daughter who has been very low with typhoid fever and abscess. She is now getting so she can sit up. I expect to go out in the work again in about two weeks. I am still praising God for a full and free salvation. While I was sitting by the bedside of my child in her afflictions, I felt that God was with me. Praise his holy name! And while I was shedding tears of sorrow over one that was so dear to me, I felt that I was not left alone. I believe my weeping was heard in heaven. I know God looks down upon the stricken home and upon the broken heart and says, “This is the way I thresh the wheat; this is the way I scour my jewels. Cast thy burden upon my arm, and I will sustain you.” Praise God, I know he keeps a tender remembrance of all our trials and troubles of life, and I am so glad that I have trusted all to his care. I know my consecration has been thoroughly tried and I have been able so far to say, Lord thy will be done. God is a present help in every time of need. I expect, the Lord willing, to hold a meeting in the Spilman settlement in Lawrence Co., Mo. beginning the second Sabbath in October. Pray that God may bless our labors. Oh, how we need more of God’s true ministers in the work. The harvest is great and the workers are few (that is, true workers)! Oh when I see the Heavenly Shepherd bringing the lambs from the wilderness, when I hear the quick word of the prodigal hastening home to find his Father, I can. say God is offering mercy to the wicked world. Oh how we ought to work for the salvation of souls. I am saved and sanctified just now. God bless all the dear saints everywhere. Amen.

Dearly Beloved Saints, Greeting: May the God of love and peace be with you all continually. Amen. We are glad to report that we are fully saved from all sin, with constant victory and perfect peace in our souls. Praise God forever! We came to this place yesterday. The meeting at Stanley, W. Va. closed Tuesday night with good results. The people attended the meeting well. The house was crowded at nearly every coming together. Much prejudice was moved from the hearts of the people and many were deeply convicted, but only a few were saved. Two or three were reclaimed from a backslidden state, one converted that never had been saved before and a few were sanctified. May they ever be faithful, and do the will of God is our prayer.

Three were buried with Christ in baptism. The Lord wonderfully witnessed to the work being in his order, by pouring out his Spirit upon those who were baptized, also upon him who administered. Praise his name! We had a very precious ordinance meeting Tuesday evening, in which about eighteen took part; others could not come on account of sickness. Quite a number presented themselves for healing from the hand of the Lord, and through obedience to the gospel, in Jas. 5:24, they were anointed with oil and the prayer of faith was offered, and the Lord wonderfully witnessed that the work was done. We had meeting on Tuesday night and took our departure in the night after meeting. Had many invitations to return in the near future. May God bless the dear saints and our many friends in that part of the country and reward them abundantly for their care of us and providing for our needs. There is a large territory in that part for some one, or more, to work for the Lord, in publishing the gospel to the people. May God send some company of workers there that can stay about six or twelve months. We had to leave on account of other appointments and urgent calls in the South. Our address for the next month will be Dodge, Clark Co., Ky., after which we go on farther south. Pray for us and the work in the southern country. Yours in the one body,

Dearly Beloved: God bless you. How my heart goes out for all saints. I have been made to know what a true child of God has to endure since I have been here, but truly if we stand firm to the end it will work out a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. Praise God! The devil has been trying every effort to put down the cause here, and has utterly failed in all. We went to Ester School house, about four miles from here, on Friday night the fifteenth, where they had stuck up a notice, warning the trustees to not let us preach there. Some came to us and told us we better not go, but praise God, we knew when God says go, and none of these things shall move us from doing God’s blessed will. We had meeting Friday night and one of the trustees refused us the house any longer. So a man, a non-professor said, “I have five acres for that man to preach on as long as he wants it.” Praise God, the next morning they cleared off the ground, fixed seats and we had a glorious meeting Saturday morning; then went about three miles south to another school house. Preached to a crowded house of attentive listeners. There we found some truly justified ones ready to do the master’s will. Then back to the grove next morn, Sabbath the seventeenth, where we meet a large crowd of attentive listeners. At that place five or six hands went up in testimony that they were going to square their lives to the New Testament. Many dear honest faces were bathed in tears. God wonderfully helps us to declare his blessed word. From there we went south again at night to a large sect house. Preached to a large crowd. The people are beginning to wake up to the truth.

There is quite a nest of Free (bound) Masons here. A few weeks ago I preached on secrecy and exposed many of their abominations. It created quite a stir among them and brought out many threats. But praise God I must declare the whole counsel of God. He says every secret thing shall be made known, and the time is here when the secrets of men’s hearts are to be made known. He is raising up men to do it. Praise God!

We are compelled to labor awhile for the support of our family, after which we expect to return to the above places to hold meetings as long as the Lord wills. We feel assured that many dear souls at each of the above places will step out on the Bible plan. Pray for us, dearly beloved, that God may ever keep us humble and use us to the bringing in of many precious souls from the powers of darkness into this marvellous light of God. Oh it is sweet to follow Jesus! From your brother saved in Jesus, hid away in God.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I feel that God wants me to write my testimony, and I am glad I have the blessed privilege of doing so. A year ago I did not want anything to do with such a paper, for I used to say I was a Free Methodist bred, a Free Methodist born and a Free Methodist till I died. But praise God, I have changed my mind entirely, and am now one of the sought-out little ones, and I am perfectly satisfied with the choice I have made, and I had rather be the least of them who are the Lord’s alone, than wear a royal diadem, and sit upon a throne. O hallelujah! I cannot express the joy I feel in my heart. Jesus saves me to the uttermost, and I truly love the way Jesus leads, and the way of the cross. It was an awful cross for me leave the F. M. sect and those I loved so dearly. God talked to me for nearly a year before I obeyed his voice, but I do thank him that I ever listened to his voice and came out of Babylon, and I have never been sorry for a moment that I requested my name dropped from the F. M. class book. Although some of those I love so dearly have turned a cold shoulder to me, the grace of God has been sufficient for me, and I can say, In the secret of his presence, I am kept from strife of toungues, and I am willing to take up my cross and follow Jesus. I am kept by the mighty power of God. Glory to his name! My soul rejoices in the Lord. I love the way Jesus leads: it brings joy and peace to my soul. Praise the Lord! I am anxious to be just what God would have me to be. O hallelujah to Jesus! As I write, I feel the heavenly touches of God’s power all through my soul. It is now seven years since I gave my heart to God, and he has healed my body several times. Your sister, washed and made white in the blood of the Lamb,

ANOINTING AND CONSECRATION.

_____

OF the anointing spoken of in the Bible, we should not fail to remember that the first one should be the anointing of the soul by the Holy Spirit. The soul should be at peace with God, and abounding in his love, where it will be a pleasure to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, and follow his instructions in all things. Yet how often we find some of his followers lagging just as far behind as they can possibly get, without completely losing sight of the Savior, seemingly afraid to trust in his word, and obey his command. O faithless generation, awake from your drifting state of unbelief! Get out of “Doubting Castle,” and into the front ranks of battle, on the line of faith, ready to follow the command of him who leadeth on to victory.

Some are wiiling to do almost anything else, when sick, except obey the instructions in James 5:14, and send for the elders to anoint them with oil and pray over them. It is no wonder they are chastened of the Lord, and “beaten with many stripes,” as it were. There is something very sacred about the anointing with oil. The virtue is not in the oil, and merely rubbing on a little oil of itself would do no good, but it is to be done because the word of God instructs us to do so, and the anointing is to be done in the name of the Lord. We read (Mark 6:13) that the apostles “anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them. The Lord has not changed his method of healing, and the same is done to day among his true followers. The chile of God who will not take God for a physician for the body as well as for the soul, is a rebellious child, and spends hours of needless suffering. O how sweet to be just where we can trust God for all things.

A VALUABLE MANUSCRIPT FOUND.

_____

“VERY little authentic information is obtainable thus far concerning the discovery by some ladies of a palimpsest manuscript of the gospels in the library of the Convent of St. Catherine at mount Sinai, except that the find is looked upon by biblical scholars all over the world as a most important one. Dr. Isaac H. Hall, curator of the METROPOLITAN MUSEUM of ART, is a well-known student of Syriac, and knew of the discovery long before the news was made public in the newspapers. He said yesterday that he expected to receive definite information from Syria in a few weeks.

“As much as he knows now is that these ladies were visiting the convent last year, and while looking over some manuscripts saw one to be a palimpsest. This is the name given to a parchment roll from which the original writing has been erased in order that the parchment may be written on again, and which has been written on again. No matter how well the original ink is removed, in the course of time the chemicals in the fluid assert themselves, and a faint marking of the original tracings can be seen. In the case of the present we find the ladies did not know whether the parchment was of any value or not, but being equipped with cameras, they photographed several pages and carried them back to London. There the copies were studied by Messrs. Burkett, R. L. Bensley, and J. Rendal Harris, who found that this was a very old Syriac version of the New Testament. These gentleman were shortly afterwards sent to mount Sinai by the Press at Cambridge to make a complete copy and recovery of the valuable Syriac text. They have thus far learned that the new manuscript contains the gospels complete, but whether it contains more of the New Testament than the gospels has not yet been told.

The library of the convent of mount Sinai has been a very fruitful field of discovery. In 1844, Tischendorf found there the famous Siniatic manuscript of the whole New Testament and parts of an old Greek biblical manuscript of the fourth century.” — NEW YORK SUN.

SAVED AND HEALED.

Cornell, Neb.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I feel this morning it is a duty as well as a privilege to testify to the goodness of a merciful God who has done so much for me, both spiritually and temporally. I was born in Harrison county, Ohio, in 1841. It was my happy lot to have a good Christian mother who taught me to fear and reverence the Lord and put my trust in him. In 1859 that Christian mother was taken to her home above, and I was thrown on my own resources. I united with the M. E. church, but did not feel that peace that floweth like a river. I soon after was sent away to school where I was thrown among the United Presbyterians. Their religion was more of the head than of the heart. If their members could recite the short Catechism, (a book gotten up by uninspired men,) and keep the Sabbath day, they were considered all right, if they did not have one bit of the grace of God in their hearts. In fact they thought it a greater sin to sing a hymn than to go to a dance. I was led farther away from duty, but in all my life, when I got into trouble, I would take it to the Lord in prayer, and I most always found a balm. I finally married, and in 1866 moved to Missouri. During the winter of 1873, I was taken with fever, and became very low, so low that I had sinking spells, every one of which my friends thought would be the last. I had three small children (one not weaned till during my sickness). I dreaded the thought of their being left without a mother; so I made earnest supplication for the Lord to make it known to me whether I would be taken from them or not. I immediately went to sleep, and in my sleep I saw a vision that I would get well and would not have another of those sinking spells, and also I would live to raise my children. When I awoke, the fever had all left me. I was entirely healed by the power of Almighty God. When my friends saw that I was so much better, they wanted me to take the medicine. I told them no, the Lord had healed me, and I had no use for the medicine. I did not know at that time that the Bible taught Divine healing. But I had great faith in God. I think that was the reason he healed me without my even asking him to do so. In 1882, our family removed from Missouri to Cornell, Neb. Last February, the evening light began to dawn at this place. Sister Kriebel and Bro. John Green commenced a series of meetings at this place, but I was absent at the time. When I came home and heard that there had been people here preaching Divine healing and proving it by the Bible, I said they were the people I had been looking for. In March, Bro. Eli Hay sent for Sister Kriebel to come back. Bro. Willis also came. They had a good meeting, but I thought they were a little too strict, and had not charity enough for others who belonged to sect churches. There was also a piece in the TRUMPET about the Millennium that was not my idea of the twentieth chapter of Revelations, so I got farther from them. But God works in a mysterious way, his wonders to perform.

One day near the middle of August I was riding in a cart, close to Scudder Post Office, when my horse took a fright and ran away. There was a boy in the cart with me, but he did not get so badly hurt as I did. He said the horse stepped on my breast. I think he ran against a wire fence and jacked out on me. I knew when the cart started to upset, but I do not know what struck my head, whether it was a fence post or a kick of the horse. I was taken to the house insensible. When I became conscious the people wanted to know if they should send for a doctor. I told them no, but to go for some of the saints and have them anoint me. I now knew what the scripture plan was.

I was so sore I could not turn in the bed. My body was in such a state I could hardly get my breath. Every breath was with great pain. My right arm was so I could not move it and it was so sore it was with difficulty I could have it moved. There was a woman there that said my collar bone was broken. I did not know whether it was or not; the flesh was raised up in a lump. My neck was badly strained and I could not so much as take a drink of water without drinking through a tube.

The saints came and anointed and prayed for me. The pain all left and the soreness. I just raised up in the bed and praised the dear Lord who had done so much for me. I then ate a hearty dinner and in about an hour walked out and got in a spring wagon, and rode home. That night after I went to bed I put my hand up where the lump had been on my collar bone. One place the bone was nearly half an inch higher than the other; so I knew it had been broken. But I could not think at first why it did not go together straight, then it came to my mind it was left as a witness what the Lord had done for me. It was healed perfect without any soreness. My lungs were also healed, all that I lacked of feeling as well as before, was a stiffness of some of the leaders of my neck when I would turn my head certain ways, also one leader from my right shoulder blade would catch in some motions of my arm. But now I consider myself well both soul and body, and am rejoicing in a full and a free salvation. I was baptized with ten others. I want and will by the assisting grace of God keep on the narrow way that leads to life eternal. I ask an interest in the prayers of God’s people that I always may prove faithful.

Dear Saints of God: I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony. Thank God, I am free from all sects and schisms, and the very God of peace sanctifies me wholly, as a second, definite work of grace, which I obtained by believing in Christ. I am praising God for sending Bro. Charlton this way to preach to this people the pure gospel, and the one and pure church. Yours, saved now.

I have had many calls for meetings in the last year, that I could not respond to, on account of my home. I have felt for a longtime, impressed to write to the TRUMPET readers about it. I feel a great desire to work this winter for the Lord, and can, if the Lord provides some one to keep louse for me. Is there not some dear sister, who wants a home this winter or longer? I would want one that is saved and prefer a middle aged woman. My husband is unsaved, but is of a very quiet and agreeable disposition. Our family consists of three — husband, boy 14 years old, and myself. We live on a farm. My work is easy. No cows to milk. Any one feeling lead of the Lord to come, write me. I am trusting it all in Father’s hands. Your saved sister,

Belle Stelter.

Dear Saints of God: May God bless you all. We praise God for the evening light, and that we have seen the light, and by the grace of God, will walk in it. I feel it is my duty, in the fear of God, to cut loose from all sectarian bands. In the year 1889 when I first got light on the subject of holiness. Since that time I have worked for the union of God’s people’ but find they can not be united in the sects. We may work up a good feeling and some preacher will come along and tear it all down. Another brother and myself who have been local preachers in the U. B. sect, have come out. We humbly ask the prayers of all God’s saints, that we stand firm for God and his cause. Yours in Christ, saved by his precious blood.

Dear Saints: I bless God to-day with all my heart that he has saved my soul free from all sin. About a year ago I was taken sick. I then lived in Wray. Colo., 167 miles from Denver. My sickness puzzled all the physicians; but finally one said it was a tumor. Oh, what pain I suffered! It was awful! At last the people said the last had come, I could not live. I was not prepared to live or die. So I had my husband telegraph for my uncle, R. W. Swinburn, of Denver. He came and I was soon able to get out of bed, and in two or three days, went to Denver, where God saved and healed me instantly. I was entirely, free from pain and disease, till in July last, when I got cold and away from God. Then I began to pray hard to God, and he heard my prayer, and raised me up again. Then I came here to Washington to visit my father, but I stopped in Chicago awhile, and there I backslid altogether; but, thank God! he has seen fit to claim me again. Thank God! he has healed me and my little girl several times. I do want you all to pray for me as I am in great trouble. I came here in August, and have not heard from my dear husband for over six weeks. Pray for him. Your saved sister, all in Christ,

Mrs. Jennie Taylor.

Dear Saints: I am so glad that I can testify, as one of God’s own dear children — that I am saved and sanctified, through the blood of the Lamb. Husband and I are taking the GOSPEL TRUMPET and it is a wonderful help. We are both new workers in the vineyard, but, praise his holy name! He is keeping us each day. How we do praise his holy name! Dear readers, I was saved at the town of Center Point, Iowa. There is where I was sanctified to do God’s bidding and now I am here at the little town of West Union, where I am trying to gel a meeting started. They need some good workers here, that can expound the word, and I ask the Lord to send some of the dear brothers and sisters here — some thorough teacher. Please do not tarry long, as time is short to many souls. Be sure to come prepared to stay a few weeks, for there are precious souls here to save, and many, that I feel would be good workers in the cause. The Lord send you soon. I have met a few sisters here that are in the evening light, and they are helping me.. They are poor in this world’s goods, but will do all they can. Be sure to bring some sisters along. I would like to have dear sister Fink and company, or whoever the Lord sends. All the dear saints, pray for us. Sister Johnson and I hold a meeting at Madison Square next Sabbath. Pray that we may have a glorious time. Your sister in Christ,

Mrs. Viola Busic.

To all the Dear Saints, Greeting: May great grace be upon you all. Amen. I feel led to write my testimony and message, to all the dear saints, through the TRUMPET. We are glad for what the Lord has done, and is still doing in Cadott, Wis. Bro. F. N. Jacobson and company arrived here June 21st, and held meetings about four weeks with good success. Deep conviction of the truth rested heavy on the people, and many were made to confess the truth and a few came out clear for God. Fourteen followed their Savior in the sacred ordinance of baptism, and since the saints went to Washington, three more were baptized and others are manifesting a desire for freedom from all sin. Hallelujah! God is graciously leading The little church here, victoriously. We have Sabbath School and two meetings every Sunday, and two meetings during each week. We are feeling the need of ministerial help, and we are praying to God, that he will open up the way for some of his Holy Ghost messengers to come here soon. Dear brethren, who of you feel led to come? Do not pass this lightly by, but commune with God and see if you are being sent of God to visit Wisconsin for the glory of God. We are poor as to money, but we will try to pay traveling expenses, to say the least, and more if possible. Here is a large field of work for the Lord. People seem to be inquiring for the truth. Amen. Pray for us. Your brother, saved, sanctified, and satisfied.

Dear Saints in Christ: I can testify to justifying, regenerating, sanctifying, healing and keeping power. I have been enjoying the healing of my body by faith, for several years. My mother was also healed, after being pronounced incurable by physicians. Three of my children have also been healed in answer to prayer of faith. Glory to God! Praise his name!

I have been preaching in the Methodist sect for the past six years. Have testified to my healing and preached it everywhere, till at last they have driven me from the sect. My design was to lead them into “the faith once delivered unto the saints.” I believe the whole Bible, and by laying on of hands and anointing with oil, have several clear cases of divine healing by faith and obedience. Now I am free indeed. Glory be to God! They, the members of the Methodist sect, have said all manner of evil against me — “crazy,” “crank,” “fanatic,” “hypocrite,” etc. But praise the Lord! none of thsoe things move me. It is my purpose to be led by the Spirit, and as the way shall open up, I hope to be able soon to preach to those who shall believe. Shall trust in the Lord to lead me. I want all the saints to pray God to open an effectual door for me to enter for his glory, salvation, and deliverance of his people, from all yokes, and also my guidance for the future. It will be a different field from any in which I have yet labored, as my work has been with the organizations, but the time has come when, to fully possess the faith once delivered to the saints. I lay aside all creeds and organizations of men, and accept God’s word in every particular — in the observance of the ordinances, living and obeying God in all things, for the saving of both soul and body. Such is the duty of all obtaining eternal life. To be sanctified is to simply be placed where we begin to see the light, glory and sunshine of his love and know Father indeed. Praise the Lord for such a wonderfull salvation, a present power, the life and joy of the soul’s fullness: a perfect peace. As the way shall open, I will go forth in the field to labor with God’s chosen. Pray for me, dear saints. Your brother saved, sanctified and kept by the Holy Ghost.

Jno. M. Bell.

NOTE TO THE ABOVE.

The Lord bless dear Bro. Bell. His experience is our own. We found it difficult to adjust ourself to the machinery of sectism before wholly sanctified to God, and after fully illuminated, we found it impossible to walk in the Spirit and pull in a sect harness. And the sect did the same good thing for us it did for our brother. i. e., cast us out. Thank God, holiness can not live and prosper within sect walls. We must have the whole realm of God’s truth, in which to walk with him. It must be divested of all the weights of human creeds and yokes, in order to soar freely on high, and reign triumphant over earth and hell. We hope Bro. Bell will soon be able to meet with some of the dear ministers who are free, indeed, and can operate in the gospel of God. Let such as desire the ministry of the word, send for him, that doors may be opened for his usefulness, and surely the dear brother will find plenty to do for the Lord. Dear brother you have the prayers of all the holy ones. Please write, as the Lord leads. Your brother,

D. S. W.
