COME, SINNER, COME!

_____

Dear ones, are you free from sin to-night?
Are you walking in the “Evening Light?”
If not, then with Jesus we invite
You, come, sinner, come!

Cho. — Then come – – – anti be free,
Bass. — Then come, sinner, come, oh come and be free.
There is mer – – cy for time:

There is mercy for thee, yes there’s mercy for thee:
Oh do – – not delay,

Ok do not delay, no longer delay.
But come – – while you may.

But come now while you may.

Sinner, Jesus loves you, this we know.
For his holy word does tell us so.
And is calling you, where’er you go,
Then come, sinner, come!

Come, repenting at his feet low bow.
Call for mercy, and he’ll hear you now:
Come while time is yours, and pay your vow.
Oh backslider, come!

Come poor sinner, come just as thou art.
Come to Jesus and give him thy heart
Come and he will hid thy sins depart.
Oh come, sinner, come!

Sinner, don’t reject this loving call,
Whosoever will, come, one and all:
Do not let these words unheeded fall.
But be wise and come!

Come dear sinner, oh why longer wait?
Just one moment more may be too late:
Sad, then sad will be your awful fate.
Beware, sinner, come!

Come dear prodigal, why longer roam
From your Father’s love, from friends and home,
Hear the angels cull from heaven’s dome,
Oh, dear sinner, come!

Come while God’s dear Spirit strives with thee.
He from all your sins will set you free;
And will give you perfect liberty,
If you will but come!

Jesus says we must be free from sin,
It we wish him to abide within:
Would you this new life front now begin?
Then rise up and come!

Come to Jesus while we know lie’s near.
Come, he waits thy burdened heart to cheer:
Come, his tender hive dispells all fear.
Oh come, sinner, come!

This may he your only chance of love,
To prepare to meet your God above:
Then do not reject the Spirit dove.
But come, sinner, come!

E. G. Masters.

__________

SALVATION.

_____

SALVATION. – Deliverance; preservation from eternal misery. (Webster).

SALVATION implies three things. 1. A Savior. Luke 2:11. 2. Something to save. Jno. 3:16. 3. Something to be saved from. Mat. 1:21. From these Bible facts let us view the fall of man, and his restoration through the plan of salvation, as the redemption scheme is purely restitutionary. To redeem, restore, save or buy back, would signify the lost condition of the thing to be saved, redeemed, restored, or bought back.

MAN’S LOST CONDITION.

Man’s lost condition, (the history of the fall with its cause and effect), and the need of deliverance, are questions well fixed in the minds of modern commentators, but to simply admit man’s sad state, his great need of divine aid, then breathe out a miserable existence here, looking for but never reaching a restoration, is Satan’s plan to deceive and keep in bondage the captives the Savior came to deliver. Instead of “heralds of the cross” and “proclaimers of deliverance” we have professed preachers whose great object is to still people’s convictions concerning reaching a perfect salvation in this life, promising a great deliverance when this mortal shall cease.

Thus men are trying, hoping, desiring and wanting to live for the Lord, but at the same time acknowledging a great failure. Why? Is it because God has failed in any point in his effort to “redeem his people?” No. Listen to some of the acknowledgements, “Brethren, we are living beneath our privilege.’’ “Brethren we are not living up to our duty.” “Brethren and sisters, we are failing to utilize every means of grace God has given for our present good and future preservation.” Hear ye the “wail of Babylon,” and a lamentation from her “soul-merchants,” pretending a desire to see their customers reach a life of practical christianity, and making a “lack of duty” the cause of their miserable failure, when the real cause is a lack of the preaching of the gospel that begets, quickens, and gives power. Essays and lectures are now substituted for the “bread of life,” and men are groping their way through this life, looking for, but never reaching a present salvation. 2 Cor. 6:2. And eternity coming in sight will reveal the awful act that the neglect of the salvation Jesus offered in time, has cut off every means of escape in the judgment.

OBJECT OF SALVATION.

1. Thou shalt call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins. Mat. 1:21. 2. That he might deliver us from this present evil world. Gal. 1:4. Not by taking us out of the world, but by keeping us from the evils of the world. Jno. 17:14, 15. Were we to measure the object of “Israel’s redeemer” while incarnate by the standard the different creeds of to-day lift up, we could not wonder that fear has supplanted hope, doubts have taken the place of faith, and a formal worship has dethroned the power of the gospel in their proud towers. But this is not our standard. The lives and teaching of Christ and his disciples, as great pillars erected by omnipotence, stand out to the view of ages, as way marks to direct our pilgrimage journey from this mode of existence to the next.

The object of the world’s Savior was to visit and redeem his people. Luke 1:68. The atonement, Zech. 13:1, contains this redeeming power, and faith in God and repentance toward the Lord Jesus Christ produced by the gospel preached applies the purchasing powers of the blood to our hearts. Therefore ye are not your own, but ye are bought with a price. 1 Cor. 6:20. In the plan of salvation we see combined both the power and the love of God, vested in the personage of Jesus Christ, to rescue and redeem.

EXTENT OF SALVATION.

Wherefore he is able to save to the uttermost those that come to God by him. Heb. 7:25. The extent of this salvation can be viewed in the power of divinity to keep humanity; and he was tempted in all points like as we are, yet without sin. Heb. 4:15. And he being tempted, is able to succor them that are tempted. Not longer than four days ago we heard a man say to a large congregation, “As long as this carnal and perishable flesh lasts we are not fully redeemed, and are under the curse of Adam, and cannot be without sin.” Come, let us reason together on this point. Before the fall, man was composed of soul and body, mortality formed from the ground. Gen. 2:17. Immortality, an emanation from God. Remember the two parts of which man was composed before the fall. In the fall carnality affected the nature of the image in which God created man. Then a restoration would result in the elimination of sin which leaves mortality. The extent of salvation (the object in effect) is the deliverance from sin, both actual and original, and humanity ruled by divinity.

CARNALITY.

A failure to distinguish the difference between the term “flesh” when applied to mortality, and “flesh” when applied to carnality, has given rise to an error that blinds and confuses many honest minds, and others like to have it so. Notice some differences. Carnality was inherited. Gen. 5:3. Mortality created. Gen. 2:17.

Carnality is not subject to the law of God. Rom. 8:7. Mortality is. 1 Cor. 9:27. The terms “old man,” “body of sin,” “body of death,” “besetting sin,” “flesh” signify carnality, and they must be “crucified,” “destroyed.” We must be delivered from it and “put it off,” that we no longer serve sin. Rom. 6:6. That the righteousness of the law may be fulfilled in us. Rom. 8:1-5. That we may run the Christian race successfully. Rom. 12:1. And that we may see the kingdom of God. Gal. 5:19-21. This is effected in salvation by faith, and results in freedom from sin.

MORTALITY.

Mortality is the only part of man that is affected by the resurrection. It puts on immortality. The soul is already immortal. Salvation restores the soul to divine favor, and this redeemed soul, lives in, 1 Cor. 5:1-9. 3:16, 17, rules, Rom. 6:11, subjugates, 1 Cor. 9:27, and brings into obedience, Rom. 6:13, this mortal body while in this life; and in the resurrection it puts on incorruption. 1 Cor. 15. And is home for the redeemed souls throughout eternity.

CONCLUSION.

Salvation is of the Lord; it is for people; it saves them from sin both inherited and committed; it is attained by faith in the power of the atonement; its recipients are kept by the power of God, through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

A. B. Stanberry.

TO THE SOJOURNER.

_____

The time was when we were dead in sins, Eph. 2:5. At that time we were citizens of this world, without Christ; being aliens from the commonwealth (citizenship or government) of Israel. Eph. 2:12. But the Almighty speaks, saying, Repent, for kingdom of heaven is at hand. Mat. 4:17. We arise from the dead, (tomb of sin) and Christ gives us light. Eph. 5:14. The Father draws us to Christ. Jno. 6:44. Christ gives us the privilege of having access through him, unto the Father. Eph. 2:18. Now we are no more strangers and foreigners, (citizens of the world) but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God. Where do the saints dwell? The saints (holy ones) possess the kingdom. Dan. 7:22, 27. This kingdom is righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Ghost. Rom. 14:17. We have been translated from the kingdom of darkness, into the kingdom of Christ. Col. 1:13. We are new creatures (new creations) 2 Cor. 5:17. Therefore the things that were our means of sustenance while in the former kingdom, are not adapted to our spiritual creation. Hence old things have passed away, and behold all things have become new. For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former (heaven and earth) shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. Isa. 65:17. The old firmament of doubts, sins and wretchedness that hung over our souls has vanished. The earth in which crooked paths were made, and Satan frolicked about with his schemes of deception, has disappeared, never more to be remembered. We receive a new earth, or glorious plain of truth to walk upon. We receive a new heaven, or the great expansion of God’s eternal truth, or the beautiful firmament of perfected love, in which Jesus Christ the Sun of righteousness is situated, throwing his rays over the inhabitants of this world, the which is diffused throughout all creation, around whom we, the saints of God as the stars of this new firmament (Dan. 12:3) revolve, receiving and reflecting the light of Christ into this dark world. Our citizenship is in heaven (the abode of God our King) Phil. 3:20. Therefore the same new heavens and earth received now, are the same ones we look to enjoy when this world is consumed by the judgment of God. Even though we are a new creation, receive a new kingdom, new heavens and earth, we for the glory of God must sojourn here for a time, 1 Pet. 1:17. Even until time ends. Then this world being destroyed we just pass from that awful scene to the land of our naturalization wherein dwelleth righteousness. We are now living in the new heaven and earth on time’s side and are surrounded by sin. But then we enter eternity’s side where no temptation comes, toils are over, and where righteousness alone dwells.

_____

“Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out rom thence, touch no unclean thing; go ye out of the midst of her; be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the Lord.” Isa. 52:11. Dearly beloved, after reading the above, we find that God wants us to be clean that bear the vessels of the Lord. So we find that God wants clean people, in body as well as spirit; for our body is the temple of God and must be holy. 1 Cor. 3:16, 17. 1 Cor. 6:18-20. We cannot see how people, after reading the above, can go on in the filthy use of tobacco in any form. God wants us to cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit; perfecting holiness in the fear of God. 2 Cor. 7:1. I know from my own experience that no one can attain to entire sanctification in the use of tobacco in any form.

Now dear ones, this may be strong meat, but God help you to see the truth in the matter. Isaiah says this way of holiness is a highway and no unclean thing can pass over it. Isa. 35:8. No one can live justified in the light of the pure word of God, and use tobacco, no more than they can live sanctified and use it. I know several who claim to be saved and use the filthy weed, and there is not one who brings the fruits of the justified person all the time, much less the fruits of the sanctified person. Just as long as no one says anything about tobacco they seem to be all right, but name tobacco and they are mad. While dear Bro. J. Cole was here in the South God did help him to preach to us the pure wore in all things; and several who claimed to be sanctified would say, “If Cole is going to preach to-day J am not going.” Dear ones, when you find such people as these you may just know they are not honest with themselves. The Southern people are more inclined to use tobacco than any other people I know of. My own dear wife backsild over tobacco three times, but I do believe she is fully saved from it at present. Praise God! I quit the filthy use four years ago last April. I was not fully convinced till dear Bro. Warner wrote the supplement to the Trumpet called the Great Tobacco Sin. Now dearly beloved, if there is any one who reads this and has not quit the filthy use and cannot see the wrong in it, please send and get one copy of the Great Tobacco Sin, and if you are not able to send for one, write to me and I will have one sent to you by the help of the Lord. People who are not willing to lay down such for Jesus’ sake and for the work’s sake are not fit for the holy remnant in this blessed evening light.

While God is, by faithful ministry preparing the bride (church) the Lamb’s wife for the coming of the Savior (Rev. 19:6-9. Eze. 34th chapter) may God help each worker in the vineyard to study Eze. 44:23 and show the people the difference between the holy and the unclean. It is hot right to spend money for such. Isa. 55:2. Dearly beloved, read these texts, please, it is for your good. Eph. 2:3. Col. 3:5-8. 1 Thess. 4:3, 4. 2 Tim. 2:22. Jas. 1:21. 1 Pet. 4:1-4. Dearly beloved everywhere, you who are in bondage in these things, go to Jesus, he will set you free. Praise God, he is able to save to the uttermost. Heb. 7:25. Praise God for freedom in Jesus’ name! Now dear ones, unto Him who is able to keep to the uttermost, and present us faultless before his throne, to the only wise God our Savior, be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Your brother, clean through the Word,

R. H. Owens,

Freeny, Miss.

Burnside, Pa.

Dear Saints of God: It is a little over one year since the Lord awakened me to the truth of the word of God, and by his mercy permitted me to accept and walk in the light. And I will ever continue to praise him, the blessed Redeemer, that he has delivered me from all the yokes and bondages of sectism and secret organizations, and all things that are earthly born and are of man’s origin, and take nothing but his Word for my guide and touch not the unclean thing. He has received me and sanctified me to do his will, and is able to keep us saved. Praise his name! We are able to overcome all things through him. We are praying earnestly to the Lord to send some of his true preachers of his Word here for a grove meeting this summer. We will procure the ground for a meeting if the Lord wills to send some one here and they write us beforehand. Oh that a mighty wave of salvation may sweep over this part of the Lord’s vineyard soon, for our hearts are burdened for the salvation of souls! I owe much to the Trumpet and tracts of Grand Junction, for the light I received from them in the saving of my soul. Your brother saved in the one body,

John C. Duff.

We have quite a number of back numbers of German Trumpets on hand, and any one wishing them for distribution can have them by dropping us a line.

We have received notice that the Norwood, Mo., camp meeting will be held later in the season than the time published in the Trumpet. The time wall be for the workers to determine.

Of late we have received a number of letters from parties inquiring about the price of the SHINNING LIGHT for Sunday Schools. Where ten or more copies go to one address we furnish them at the rate of 18 cts. per copy for one year, or for any part of a year at the same proportion. For example 20 copies for three months would be 90 cts, We also have small cards in different colors with one verse of scripture on each card. These are very nice for children to commit verses from. We mail them for 10 cents per 100. The Children’s Songs consisting of five songs with music can be had for 10 cents per doz.

A PLAIN DUTY.

A man by the name of C. Z. Lindley in Iowa, who for a few years, carried among the saints a profession of holiness he had got in Babylon; and who repeatedly exhibited, a wrong and self-inflated spirit, and was labored with, but never had the cause removed, a few years ago went fully out from among us, and has very clearly shown that he is not of God nor of us. We spake of his dreadful spirit, having met him twice since his departure from God; but we did not use his name. Now, however, since he appears in public print, and appeals to the saints of God everywhere to come to his support, it is our duty to thus plainly warn all God’s children to receive him not into your house as a teacher, neither in person nor on paper. Under his smooth words, and holiness garb, are hid a combination of hatred, deceit, self glory, and abominable heresy. The man has been labored with by Bro. Henry and ourself, and he has gone out of the fellowship of all God’s saints in that country. You cannot to the glory of God receive his sheet into your house, nor in any way bid him God’s speed.

CORRECTION.

McLallen Corners, Pa.,
July 5, 1895.

Dear Brethren: I am requested by some, and also feel it my duty to correct a mistake which appeared in the last week’s Trumpet, June 27. In the obituary of Emrick, of Castine, O., written by Bro. S. L. Speck, the following statement was made: “He [Emrick] fell off his horse and broke his leg. The doctors amputated it, which resulted in his death,” showing that the amputation was the cause of his death, and leaving the impression on the mind of the reader that the doctors were to blame. This is not true at all; it was some time before a doctor could get to Mr. Emrick. The leg was broken, and the bone ran through the hide, into the ground, and the dust got into the wound, poisoning it, and lock jaw set in. The doctors did all they could to save the leg, but seeing it impossible, thought by amputating it they might be able to save his life but were in doubts of it. So I myself being acquainted with the circumstance, must say the doctors did all they could, and when I spoke to one of them he showed himself a gentleman by saying, “We have done all we could and if you can help him, do so.” I am quite sure Bro. Emrick could not have lived had they not amputated the leg. So to do justice to all concerned, and to the cause of Christ, I make this correction that every mouth may be stopped. Also I do not think Bro. Speck will take any exceptions. Yours in him,

Geo. W. Howard,

Castine, O.

__________

DO YOUR DUTY.

_____

May God bless the dear saints everywhere. “And let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: fear God and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man.” Eccl. 12:12. We find in this scripture it is our duty to obey God in every respect. But we find some people professing to be straight with God and free from all sin, and their children going headlong in sin. Dear ones, in the name of Jesus who has redeemed us from all sin, let us see that our children are in the straight and narrow way, for it will be a sad scene in the last day to see our children go to torment because we did not do our duty toward them. And if we neglect our duty we will have to spend eternity in torment with them. We know disobedience is sin. Father has commanded us in his word, Prov. 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” This does not mean to wait until the child is loaded down with sin, then begin to teach it, but it means to begin at an early age, just as soon as the child begins to notice everything. And dear parents, let our commands be full of love and gentleness toward the children, and may Father help us to always know where our children are and what they are doing, and instead of doing as some of the parents, let us do what the Word tells us to do. We will find it in Prov. 23:14, “Thou shalt beat him with the rod and deliver his soul from hell.” Dear ones, we find many disobeying this commandment. In stead of using the rod they use their hand and slap the child in the face or on the head, with the threat, “If you do not behave yourself I will skin you alive,” or “I will beat you within an inch of your life.” Now, dear ones, these expressions ought not to be used, and this slapping is all of the devil. Let us train our children according to the word of God, not provoking them to wrath, but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Then we will have a happy home. But if our children have got unruly, oh may God help us to have them on our mind continually and praying earnestly for them, that they will be saved. For Jesus said in his word, If ye abide in me and my words abide in you ye shall ask what ye will and it shall be done. John 15:7. May God help us to begin at home. I have met fathers professing to be sanctified, and letting their children go to bed without prayer or hearing the Word read. They say they do this that they may keep peace in the family. Jesus said, Suppose ye that I came to give peace on earth? I tell you nay, but rather divisions. Luke 12:51. Now, dear ones, God help us to see when we do this, we compromise with the devil. The Word teaches us that it is sin to compromise. It is the duty of every parent to sacrifice some time every day and talk with the children about Jesus and how he loves them. When both parents are saved of course the children can be handled to an advantage, but if there is only one of the parents saved, God holds us to do our duty, always holding Jesus up before them. Dear ones, if we have been neglecting our duty in this line, may God help us to take the little ones to heart. Amen. Your brother in Jesus,

J. E. Rineberger.

News from the Field

Welland, Ont., July 1, 1895.

Dearly Beloved Saints: We can report victory on the Lord’s side. The tabernacle meeting, nine miles west of Welland, was a glorious victory from beginning to end. Much prejudice removed, and the truth of the gospel had a good effect upon the large congregation, who came out night after night for eight nights, closing by the burial of three in baptism in the Chippawa river, and two at the altar the last service. We are very thankful to the people for their kindness in looking after our needs. The Lord willing, we start for Berlin the 5th inst. Pray for us and the work in that wicked town. Yours separated for the gospel,

J. A. Dillon and Co.

_____

June 23 we met with Bro’s Schell and Howard in a tabernacle they had pitched in the village of Lake View, Logan Co., Ohio. A discussion had been arranged and agreed upon between Bro. Schell and an Adventist minister in that country by the name of Elder Vanhorn. The entire Sabbath question was discussed, formulated under four propositions, each speaker taking the affirmative in two of them. The discussion opened up Lord’s day morning Aug. 23, and continued forenoon and night until Sabbath night Aug. 30 except Saturday and Sabbath forenoons.

After the first day, Mr. Vanhorn claiming nervous disability, had an old debater from Battle Creek Mich, whose name is also Vanhorn, take his place and carry on the discussion. The investigation was well attended; good congregations in the forenoon, and crowded tent at night. There was much interest manifest on the part of all the people. We are confident that we speak the verdict of the entire community, with the exception of those who are “bewitched” with the legal “yoke of bondage,” when we say that the false creed, and perverse disputings of Adventism were utterly demolished by the word of God, and that the New Covenant, and the Christian Sabbath were clearly established, both by the Word of Truth, and early history. Many unscrupulous refuges of lies resorted to by the law-ventist teachers were so thoroughly exposed before all the people, that their folly was indeed manifest to all.

About every afternoon we held gospel meetings in the tabernacle, and the Lord saved a few precious souls. We had the happy privilege of meeting a goodly number of saints from Foraker, Waynesfield and elsewhere, and the Lord did greatly bless our souls together in his service. At the latter place we met with the church one night, and found, a joyful little host. Bro’s. Schell and Howard have the tabernacle pitched there by this time, and we expect to hear of a glorious work done there. Lord bless and add to his church in those parts. |

The discussion was taken down by a shorthand writer and will doubtless be published.

Elberton, Wash., July 1, 1895.

Dear Brethren: We truly magnify the name of the Lord for his blessings and goodness to his children. For some time we have felt the Lord directing us to visit the churches along the Pacific coast.

Thursday, June 27, Bro. Daugherty and I arrived at the camp meeting near this place where we found many precious saints of God with whom we were greatly rejoiced to meet. Here we met Bro. and Sister Jacobson who have been used of God in these parts during the past two years; also Bro. J. W. Byers from southern California. We found the work of the Lord here in a prosperous condition, and many places open for the pure gospel in the surrounding country. The Lord is raising up a number of gospel workers here, but there is need of many many more consecrated workers to come to these new fields to herald the gospel truths to the hungering souls where the gospel has never yet been preached in its purity.

There are about thirty tents in the grove and God is manifesting his power among his children. Souls are being saved, and miracles wrought at the hands of his servants. Truly the words of Isaiah 34th chapter are being fulfilled with signs and wonders following, in opening the eyes of the blind, healing the lame, deaf ears, and the dumb made to speak, and many have been healed of various other diseases. To God be all the glory.

About twenty persons were healed to-day by the power of God. Bro. J. W. Haynes from Cora, Idaho, came to the meeting, gave up the use of tobacco, confessed his sins, and afterwards consecrated for sanctification and applied for healing. He stated that through an injury received twenty-three years ago, the drum of his right ear was bursted and destroyed, causing ulceration, after spending over $1oo for medical aid, without avail, and having the ear probed with instruments, the doctors pronounced it incurable. The ear was anointed and the prayer of faith offered and the ear perfectly restored instantly to perfect hearing. One deaf and dumb man was healed insomuch that he could both hear and speak, having been a mute for forty years. Others were instantly healed of blindness and deafness. One woman who was paralyzed was wrought eighteen miles upon a bed, and immediately arose and walked after prayer was offered in her behalf.

A boy who was going about on crutches, had his foot anointed, was instantly healed and threw the crutches for the children to play with, as he had no further use for them. There have been many wonderful cases of instantaneous healing, while there were others that were more gradual, for which repeated prayers were offered.

The word of God is being presented in all its purity in the power of the Spirit and the people are speedily moving up to the Apostolic standard.

For some time we have felt that divine healing has not been so definitely preached by God’s ministers as it should be, as it is when accompanied by the word, the most effectual means of establishing and spreading the gospel.

Dear brethren in the ministry, divine healing has been kept too much in the back ground, and not set forth and practiced with enough authority. God wants a forward move on this line, and we are glad to know that many hearts are being stirred to a sense of duty on this line. Nothing else will so much hasten this great reformation. Are you humble enough to be entrusted with the precious gifts of the Spirit, and used of God? If so, move out in Jesus’ name. It must be preached, and preached with authority sent down from heaven, then will the signs and wonders follow. When it is preached it must be practiced, and God will receive glory.

We will probably remain in Washington until near the time of the Woodburn, Ore., camp meeting, after which we expect to go on to California. Pray for us.

E E Byrum.

Somerville, Ala.

Dear Saints and Readers of the Trumpet: God bless you all richly, and help the dear saints to keep on the forward move for God and glory, and help sinners to see the importance of being saved now, for time is swiftly flying. We are very thankful to God to yet be able to testify to full salvation. God is keeping us saved from all sin, and we have victory in our souls. And we are on the forward move for God, and feel that we are gaining ground. To God be all the glory. We are determined to possess all the land of Canaan. Father has willed it to us and it is ours. We labored in Tenn. about four months A few souls were saved, yet it seemed the ingathering was small. We sowed the good seed in some new fields and we believe that some has fallen on good ground and will yield fruit to the glory of God and that souls will be saved. Eight souls were baptized near Fayetteville, all of which had escaped out of sectism. After baptizing we returned to the home of Sister Moor and held an ordinance service. Twenty-six participated. The Lord poured out his blessings upon us and we had a glorious time. A few in the edge of Giles Co. Tenn, near Pettusville, Ala. moved out of sectism quit their tobacco and professed pardon. May God help them to be firm. Another meeting is needed there. We are now in Morgan Co. Ala. according to the directions of the Lord. Three souls were baptized yesterday, near Zion. Expect soon to start the tent to work which has been lying still because there was no one to use it. If any desire tabernacle meetings in Ala. this fall please write me at once, to Somerville. Ala. Your saved brother and sister on the altar for Jesus,

Otto Bolds and wife.

Clyde, S. C.

Dear Ones in Jesus: We went to Stokes Bridge, S. C., and there the Lord opened up a place for us to preach, in the house and yard of the leading merchant at that place. After holding two services, the Advents offered us their house of worship, which we went to Saturday night, and then continued meeting until Monday night.

The pure word of God was something new to the people of this place. God giveth the increase, and we believe much good will result from this meeting. Praise the Lord! May God richly bless Mr. Thos. Pate, the merchant that opened up his home for the preaching of the gospel. The day that we arrived at this place one of the merchants called us tramps, and said hard things about us. In a short time one of his children died very strangely and suddenly. It made the impression upon the minds of people who heard him that it was a judgment from God sent upon him He did not go to the meetings, and tried to prevent others from attending. His house was next door from where we were holding meetings; and from a house of murmuring it was turned into a house of mourning. Oh may the children of men quit fighting against God! Please read 2 Chron. 36:16 Mark 16:20.

Last Monday morning we went to New Glory, the home of Sister McCoy a noted holiness woman in this section of country. She received us into her home kindly and we began meeting in that neighborhood Tuesday night and continued until yesterday (Sunday). Dear Bro. E. B. Haynes came to us yesterday and preached with much unction from on high. Sister McCoy and another sister made their escape out of Babylon. Sister McCoy wanted to be baptized but her husband took to himself some of her brothers and some very bad men and set themselves against it being done, even after we had met at the place. It bids fair to be another case like Sister Martha Pepple. We had preaching on the ground and while I was talking they began to contradict and curse which caused a great confusion. It reminded me of the uproar at Ephesus. Bro. Haynes had preached on Babylon and its confusion, and here we had a clear, practical and true illustration of it. Praise the Lord! It convinced so many, some that had been fighting the truth, that we began to sing “All praise to Him who reigns above.” This was one of the grandest victories for God that I ever witnessed. But poor Sister McCoy is in a home and family of bitter persecution. She handed me paper that I am writing this on, late yesterday afternoon and said, “Do write to the GOSPEL TRUMPET and ask all to pray for me and my poor wicked husband, and sons and brothers.” Oh brethren, let us pray earnestly for her. I have just been thinking, suppose it was me. Let us all thus think and feel, for we must have the same care one for another. 1 Cor. 12 25, 26.

We are now on our way to the assembly meeting to be held in Darlington, S. C. Pray for us. And may God bless and keep in perfect love and safety all the dear saints everywhere. Amen.

J. E. and Rivie L. Shaw,

Darlington, S. C.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I am sweetly saved and he keeps me each day. Praise his dear name! I have been saved since the second day of February. The Lord told me in a dream I must be a better woman, and I began praying and was saved the same day. And I want the prayers of all the dear saints that I may be sanctified and safely kept by the Lord. Dear Editor and Trumpet Readers: I will try to write a few lines to the Trumpet. The Trumpet just touches the secret of my heart. I commenced taking it last March and it has been meat and drink to my soul. None but the pure in heart shall see God, and I want to know nothing save Jesus Christ and him crucified. I am glad to tell you that Jesus is able to heal both soul and body. Bless the dear Lord for his keeping power. My heart just longs to be in the camp meetings. I ask your prayers that God may always keep me humble. From your brother in Christ,

You can deceive all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot deceive God any of the time.

Gal. 6:7. Jas. 1:26.

A Missouri sect editor advises the members of his sect to keep their disputes, wrangles and denominational differences out of the papers, thereby acknowledging a division. I wonder if he ever read

1 Cor. 3:1-4?

The only basis of a true oneness in Christ, is to obey the Scriptures.

2 Cor. 6:14-18. 2 Thess. 3:6. Rev. 18:4.

Better live in a hovel, and go to bed supperless, than to reign in a palace, and go to bed without salvation.

Prov. 15:16, 17.

If we allow the Spirit of God to do its office work in our hearts, there will be no trouble about the control of our tongue.

Mat. 10:19, 20.

If a hypocrite could keep his lips sealed, he might make a partial success of his deception.

Psa. 29:1. Prov. 21:23.

The hardest holiness fighter I ever saw, was the one that prayed the oftenest for God to cleanse him from sin, and give him a pure heart.

Ezek. 33:31, 32. Isa. 29:13.

The man that asks God to forgive his sins every time he sits down to eat, never had any confidence in His promises, or he would believe that he had received what he asked for.

Mat. 21:22.

Jesus did not have to die in order to be able to forgive our actual transgressions; he did that before he was crucified.

Heb. 13:12.

The majority of professors have a religion that they are compelled to endure. They remind one of a person with a severe head-ache; it hurts, but he does not want to lose his head.

Jno. 13:17. Jas. 1:22.

Too many people try to keep salvation, instead of letting salvation keep them. God will do the keeping, if we will do the letting.

1 Pet. 1:5. 2 Pet. 1:3-11.

One of the hardest things a young saint has to learn, is to keep his hands off the ark.

1 Chron. 3:9, 10. Mat. 28:18.

There never was but one preacher, and never will be but one (the Spirit of God). He uses many thousands of mouths to reach the hearts of the people.

Jno. 14:16. Rom. 8:14. Gal. 5:18.

A theological seminary is nothing more nor less than a so-called preacher factory.

2 Tim. 4:1-4.

It would be amusing to see a fresh Methodist or Baptist theological graduate trying to preach for, and control a congregation of any other sect. They are not interchangeable: they will not fit.

Factory-made goods never wear like real home-spun.

Read Mark 1:17, 18.

There never was a house built on earth that was death-proof.

Dear Saints: I am praising God for salvation that saves me from all sin. Praise his name forever! I have know desire but to do his holy will. There are but a few of God’s little ones in Detroit. But I can truly say that God is with us. I want to so live by the grace of God that I can say of a truth that He is leading me moment by moment. Pray for me that I ever may be humble at the feet of Jesus. Yours in the one body,

Dear Brethren and Sisters: I have been troubled for years with kidney disease, also pain in my lower limbs, caused by a fracture of the hip joint. I had faith in Jesus, and knew he could cure me if I would only let him, but did not know how to do so. I went to hear evangelist J. W. Byers who was conducting meetings here, and I was captured for the Lord. That is, I was a Baptist; and the Baptist do not teach divine healing. But now I can trust everything to God, for he has healed me and I feel like a new man. We all have enjoyed the meetings for the past two weeks. Many were healed from sin and disease, and are walking with Christ. Yours for God,

Chas. T. Smith.

Dear Saints of God: I thought it to the glory of God to write my testimony, to the GOSPEL TRUMPET for the first time. In 1876 I joined the U. B. sect, and lived in that sect ever since, until about a month ago Bro. and Sister F. N. Jacobson came here and preached the pure word of God, and the Spirit of God witnessed with the Word and showed me that it was the word of God, and that I must walk in the light or walk in darkness and I did not want to do that. So I accepted the light and am walking in the light as he is in the light, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses me from all sin.

I praise the Lord for salvation that is full and free. The sectarians are mad because we do not go to their meetings, but we. do not feel led of God to build up divisions any longer. I have done enough of that in the past. God being my helper I will do no more of it. From your brother justified freely and sanctified wholly by a second work of grace. Amen.

Dear Brethren: Will you kindly give space in the Trumpet to tell what the Lord has done for me. He has saved and sanctified my soul. Oh praise his name! I have sweet peace in my soul that floweth like a river. The Lord every day and hour is teaching me sweet lessons of humility and love. He is a present help in every time of trial and affliction. To show the consequence of fooling and using God’s time for vain deeds, I will relate a little of my experience in such a way. About three months ago I was working in town; I got to running a race in chopping wood. The ax-handle wrenched in my hand and bruised my middle fore finger so that it began to swell right away, and I saw it was going to make a bone felon Well I worked all next day with it and suffered very much pain with it that night. I could not sleep at all; got up about twelve o’clock and told the folks I was going to get the saints to pray for me. I went home and found my mother gone, so had to wait till morning. By this time it was a felon of the worst kind. I then rode about five miles and was anointed, in the name of the Lord, according to Jas. 5:14, 15. Instantly the pain left. Oh praise the Lord for his mercy! I never lost any sleep afterwards with it, although Satan tried me severely several times. Oh dear reader, take warning and do everything to the glory of God, which if I had done I would not have been chastened. Your brother washed and redeemed in the wonderful blood,

W. E. Reeder.

Dear Saints: The Lord justifies me freely and sanctifies me wholly. O praise the Lord for freedom from all the yokes of bondage. Glory to God! He has healed our little girl twice since last February and done many other things for us. Such as leading husband and myself out in this blessed evening light. And O how blessed is that light, it is perfect day in our souls all the time. The devil gets mad and makes many threats, but still it shines just the same only brighter. Amen.

Husband has been preaching for the U. B. sect for about ten years, and when we would say a word about holiness about half of the members would get mad and do everything against us they could. And we just got where we could see the contention and division and strife, but did not know just how to get at it to get the members all of one mind and one spirit as God’s word taught it. But praise the Lord when I got the GOSPEL TRUMPET and the tracts and compared them with the word of God I could see and discern the one body. And then when Bro. and Sister Jacobson came here and preached the whole word of God, the Lord by his Spirit and the expounding of his Word, husband said that this is the way and heard the voice, “Walk ye in it,” and praise the Lord he and both went to the altar and consecrated and got the fullness of Christ. And now we are going, by the help of the Lord, into the gospel field and try to get souls into the kingdom. O praise the Lord for the privilege of being one of his flying angels, carrying the message of salvation to the lost. Now we ask all the dear saints to pray for us that we may be kept by power divine. Yours in the one body.

Dear Saints and Trumpet Readers: I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony. I do praise God for a free and full salvation that keeps me from all sin. I am trusting the Lord for both soul and body and I am determined by his grace to ever live true to Him. Sometimes Satan tempts me strongly and persistently but his grace has been sufficient. I believe all the precious Word of God and am willing to measure to it.

I praise God for the evening light and highway of holiness. I joined the M. E. sect in 1866, and remained there until June, 1894, when I heard the Lord calling me to come out of Babylon, and I at once obeyed that call. Praise the Lord! I thank the Lord for sending Brother and Sister Shaw to our neighborhood to preach the gospel when he did. It had never been preached here until they came; but I do praise the Lord that it came in time to reach me. When I was in the M. E. sect I paid what they assessed me, and could get drunk, keep bad and wicked company and do as they did and still it was “Bro, Goodman;” but as soon as I got salvation and came out from the M. E. sect to abide only in Christ, I was a disgrace to the Goodman family. But praise the dear Lord for such a disgrace — to be hated and disowned because I love and follow the dear Savior. My wife and oldest son are still in the M. E. sect. Pray for them dear saints, that they may follow Christ and come out. Pray for my other unsaved children, and for me, that I may never stop and reason with the devil, but may go on living and preaching the truth as it is in Jesus. Your brother in Christ,

J. L. Goodman.

Dear Saints: May God’s will be done by you as it is done in heaven. I was not permitted to attend the camp meeting, but the dear Lord gives me this little task to do, so in the love; anti fear of God I will write as the Spirit may direct. I can say to God’s glory, Jesus keeps me safe within the one fold. Praise the Lord! Am truly a new creature in Christ Jesus. It is wonderful how merciful God has been, and how much he has done for me, for Satan had so nearly destroyed me, soul, mind and body. But praise the name of the Lord, the Son of God was manifest that he might destroy the works of the devil, and so through Christ God imparts eternal life to my soul, gives me the Spirit of power and of love, and of a sound mind, and strength of body to do His will. Praise his name forever! Christ is all in all to me, Yea, I give him the pre-eminence in all things. Col. 1:18. For he is worthy to receive glory and honor forever. I praise the dear Lord that I am free from the sects; for no one can live in sectism and give Christ the pre-eminence in all things. James says, if we offend in one point we are guilty of all. Our blessed Redeemer purchased the church with his own blood. Acts 20:28. He built it himself. Mat. 16:18. He is the door, Jno. 10:9. He openeth and no man shutteth, and shutteth and no man openeth. Rev. 3:7. And writes our names in heaven. Luke 10:20. And he sets the members every one of them in the body as it pleases him. 1 Cor. 12:18. Just as sure as these quotations are God’s word, so sure are the sects an offence unto God. I do praise God that he is calling his people out of Babylon (or confusion) and every true child that hears his voice will come out, for Jesus says, his sheep know his voice and they follow him, and he will lead them into the one fold. Jno. 10:10. God broke down the partition wall between Jew and Gentile. Eph. 2:14. So reason with all the Scriptures teach it is not God’s will that man should keep up partition walls between God’s children, for Jesus prayed that we might be perfect in one, Jno. 17:33. I do praise God that his prayer is being answered again and may God manifest still mere of his glorious power. Amen.

Bro. Bolds came here and preached a few gospel sermons and the truth was well received and there is great need of more real gospel work. I am looking to the Lord to move on some one to labor here for God and his truth that souls may be saved and his church established. Pray for this people and for me that I may ever have on the whole aror of Godm and do his blessed will. Yours in defence of the gospel.

Mrs. C m Eddy.
