BE STRONG AND TRUE.

_____

Be strong and valiant for the truth.
Resist the tempter’s luring power:
Shun all the avenues of sin,
And trust in God each day and hour.

Rise up and fight the giant foes,
And conquerors be in all for God:
When sorely pressed by legions dark,
Obey and trust His holy word.

Cast not away the arm of strength,
To yield unto the tempting throng;
For God is always strong and true,
To help and keep us from the wrong.

The righteous Lord trieth the hearts:
Despise not thou the chastening rod,
And when rebuked of Him, faint not,
For ’tis the wisdom of our God.

If you but stand the trying tests,
He’ll bring you forth as gold that’s tried,
And fit you for the heavenly home,
To dwell in glory at His side.

He is our rock, our tower high,
And to the meek He giveth grace:
A shield He is to them that trust,
The joy of those who seek His face.

He will forsake you not, he says,
But ever in your heart s abide,
And make you He in pastures green:
In paths of pleasantness He’ll guide.

Importunity.

_____

(Continued from last issue.)

I SAY unto you brethren, the very best Christian men, do not always have their petitions granted the first time they offer them. And if we do not continue in importunity, we will sometimes be defeated and never get the answer. Now remember Jesus doesn’t teach that if we lazily look up and ask God for something, then throw the petition over-board, that he is under obligations to hear. We are to tell God we will give him no rest until he does answer, and we will finally get an answer. Brethren oft- times you have been bothered over certain things. You perhaps have had a sick child. You have asked God to heal him. You have met the requirements, had it anointed and prayed for. You tried to believe it was done, and behold it was not done. Well you tried hard to console yourself with the thought that it wasn’t God’s will to heal it. God didn’t say so, you just guessed so. You know, brethren, many of you have had just such experiences. Now, it is our privilege under all such circumstances to pray these burdens through, and either get healing or find out the reason why. But we must have enough importunity to pray a week, a month, a year, or until the petition reaches the throne. I thank God I have found out it is my privilege to know God’s will concerning me. But Jesus says also, “Seek, and ye shall find.” What is implied in that word seek? Suppose you lose a five-dollar gold piece somewhere here on the camp-ground. What would you do? You would not just turn over one chip and conclude that you had sought thoroughly. No; seek means to turn everything upside down, and search everywhere. If you do that God says ye shall find. So there is no use talking, you are bound to be on your knees a great deal of your time if you know God’s will concerning you. If you are not, you will just go through this world hap-hazard, so to speak. Concerning a great many things you will be in the guess so regions. You know that you are justified and sanctified wholly, but there are thousands of other things necessary to know before you are thoroughly equipped to fight the devil. For instance. I am sick. I ask God to heal me and my faith doesn’t push the petition to the throne. If I lazily quit praying and conclude it is not God’s will, I am a target for the devil to shoot at. He can bring all sorts of things into my mind with respect to my healing, and I don’t know whether they are true, or whether they are not true. Why? Because I don’t know God’s will in that case. But when I pray to God and ask God to heal and God answers and heals me, then let the devil talk. When I am healed I know I am healed and the devil can’t make me believe anything to the contrary. Or let me ask God to heal me and God answers back, “It is not my will to heal you.” Then the devil can’t bother me one whit. I know God’s will in respect to my case. You see, my brethren, when we have a perfect knowledge of God’s will, we are thoroughly equipped to fight the devil, but never before. Everyone that asketh receiveth, but not everyone receiveth when he asketh the first time. Many times he must repeat his asking a good long while.

I used to think in my early Christian life that when we reached the apostolic standard of faith, we would be where all we had to do was to say, Lord, do it, and it was done. I really thought that the apostles and prophets had such faith, but I find this to be a mistake. There is not a man on record in the Old Testament or New Testament who got an answer to his prayers every time the first time he prayed. Let us look at a few examples. I will take the apostle Paul. I believe he had as great faith as any man of the New Testament. He said himself, “I was not a whit behind the very chiefest apostle.” I believe this was true in respect to his faith. Did he always get an answer the first time he prayed? Let us turn to the 12th chap, of 2 Cor. I read from the 7th to the 10 verses. “And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.”

Here Paul tells us that after Christ had revealed such great things to him, even caught him up to the third heaven and to paradise, and showed him wonderful things, there was a thorn given him in his flesh. He calls it a messenger of Satan. According to the Galatian epistle it was weak eyes. Well he wanted to be healed. He asked God three times to heal him. This is explicit proof that the first and second prayer was not answered. He prayed once for his healing; he didn’t get healed, nor did God tell him it was not his will to heal him? He got nothing in answer to his first prayer. Well, Paul saw at once the message had not gone through, so he repeated the petition and again got no answer. Then he repeated it again. This time the message reached its destiny, and he received a prompt reply. I read it: “My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” He didn’t pray any more, that settled the question. He knew now that God wanted him to keep those weak eyes, as a safeguard against getting puffed up. The devil could give him no trouble. He knew God’s will. So even with his great faith, Paul had sometimes to use importunity before he got answers. Well, if he did, we must too.

Now I will give you an Old Testament example of faith. I will select a man whom I believe to be equal to any Old Testament man in faith. I will take the prophet Elijah. Did he always get answers the first time he prayed for a thing? No. James tells us, that Elijah prayed for dry weather, and in answer to that prayed God withheld the rain for three years and six months. And again James tells us that he prayer for rain and God sent rain. But did God send rain the first time Elijah prayed for it? Let us turn back to the original record and see.

1 Kings 18:41-46: – “ And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain. So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees, and said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked and said, There is nothing. And he said, go again seven times. And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man’s hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not. And it came to pass in mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel. And the hand of the Lord was on Elijah; and he girded up his lions, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.”

Here Elijah told the king to go up to his dinner, for there was a sound of an abundance of rain. What sound did Elijah hear? There was no thunder, no clouds, and no haze. It was simply the sound of faith which he heard. The King went up to dinner but Elijah went up to the top of Mt. Carmel to pray. He threw himself upon the ground, with his face between his knees, and fervently prayed God to send rain. Then he says to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. See if there is any sign of rain. The servant looked, and returned saying, there is nothing, sky is as clear as crystal. Well, Elijah’s prayer wasn’t answered. He prayed the second prayer. Then he says to his servant. Now go and look. He went, he looked and returned saying there is nothing. Two prayers offered, no answer yet. He then prayed the third prayer. Now go and look, he says to his servant. The servant looked and returned with the same answer as before. Three prayers and no answer. Then he prayed the fourth time. Now says he to his servant, Go and look. He did so, and returned with the same answer as before, nothing yet. Many of us would have given up, and concluded it wasn’t God’s will to give us any rain. Wouldn’t we? You see we need more importunity. Well, he didn’t give up. He prayed the fifth prayer. Now go and look, he says to his servant. He went, and looked and came back saying, nothing yet. He prayed the sixth prayer. Now go and look, he says to his servant, surely it is clouding up by this time. The servant returned again with the same discouraging answer: Nothing yet, Then we would have given up, wouldn’t we? We certainly would have thought our prayer was out of God’s order. But Elijah prayed again. He prayed the seventh prayer, and then told the servant to go and look. And coming back he says, I see a little cloud rising out of the sea like a man’s hand. I imagine ‘I hear Elijah say, AMEN. I believe he thanked God for that. That is enough, it is going to rain. Now he says to his servant, go tell the king to hitch up and go home, or he will get wet on the road. He had the answer now. He saw the cloud like a man’s hand rising out of the sea. The king believed him, hitched up and drove home. The spirit of God put the foot race in Elijah, and Elijah beat him up to Jezreel. But in the mean time the sky was full of clouds and with wind, and there was a great rain.

So, my brethren, when you offer a prayer to God and you get no answer, don’t carelessly conclude it isn’t God’s will. When God tells me it isn’t his will, then I know it is not his will, but never before. Nor will I be satisfied with anything short of yes or no. God’s word forbids me to be satisfied with anything short of that in the very command, “Be not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.” Is that commandment in your hearts, brethren? When you make a petition to God and get no answer, remember you are not excusable. You are commanded to pray again, because it is your Christian duty to understand the will of the Lord. Now I am going to give you the greatest example on record. I will show you Jesus, and that he had to use importunity sometimes. He had to continue sometimes a long while in prayer, but the answer came. He said his Father always heard him, but he didn’t say his Father always answered him the first time he prayed. He was importunate, that is why he always got answers. You, my brethren will always get answers if yon are importunate. God will either grant your petition or he will say no. And when he says no, you know his will. But when you pray and get no answer, pray again. You don’t know God’s will yet. Pray until God says something and then be satisfied. Now let’s proceed with the Savior as an importuner.

Matt. 26:36-45 — “Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. And he cometh unto the disciples and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray? that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying. O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy. And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.”

Here we have Christ praying three times the same prayer. He placed three of his apostles on guard and went a little space, kneeled down and prayed, if it were His will to remove the cup. He returned, and found the apostles sleeping. I suppose he had been praying an hour. For he wondered why Peter could not watch an hour. It was a good long prayer, wasn’t it? Or rather a whole hour repeating the same little petition. He set them on guard again and returned and continued repeating the very same prayer, after which he returned to the apostles and found them asleep again. He reproved them this time for sleeping, and returned and prayed the third time saying the very same words. Now I ask, why did Jesus pray the the very same prayer three times, or for about three hours? There is but one sensible answer to this question. Namely this: He did not receive an answer in the first and second hours. After he had prayed one prayer, he returned, awoke the apostles, set them on guard, and went back to pray. He didn’t seem to be satisfied yet. He prayed the second time, and it brought no satisfactory answer from heaven. When he came back after the third prayer was he satisfied? Yes, see how resigned he was. He did not reprove his apostles for going to sleep. No, he says, sleep on, take your rest. I am satisfied: I have the answer now. The hour has come. He that betrayeth me is at hand. I am ready to go now. Ah, he had the answer now. What answer did he get to that third prayer? Matthew did not record the answer, but Luke did. Let me read it. Luke 22:43 — “And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.” That was enough, he got help. But mark you the angel did not come until after he had prayed his prayer three times. The first prayer brought no answer. The second prayer brought no answer. The third prayer brought an angel from heaven. Ah! my brethren, you have ofttimes been cheated out of a sweet communion with that angel from heaven because you did not use enough importunity. You ceased praying too soon. Now don’t forget this precious lesson. When a burden rests upon your heart, for somebody else or for yourself, resolve that you will carry that burden to the very throne of grace, if it takes you a year; and you will ofttimes gain victories, where you have in the past put up with defeats. My Lord, help us to realize what this means. It is an established rule of heaven, an established fact in God’s word, that God will withhold answers to anybody’s prayers sometimes in order to increase their faith by continuous exercise of the same. Hallelujah! I praise God that I have learned this point. It is precious to me, and it is the key to many late victories under exactly such circumstances as in my earlier life I had undergone defeats. Now when I get under a burden of prayer for myself or for somebody else, I know it is God’s will that I know his will, and I resolve to pray it through. Some of you have burdens on your hearts. You have unsaved friends that you are praying for. You have prayed God to convict them of their sins. God hasn’t done it as yet. Now it is God’s will to convict men of their sins, when we pray for them. They may not always yield and get converted, when they are convicted, but God will convict them in answer to your prayers in despite of the man or woman for whom you are praying.

Now use importunity! repeat those prayers over and over and over until you realize they strike the throne. Pray for me. If you pray once, and don’t get an answer, pray again and again. Oh! Hallelujah to Jesus!

“As long as my thoughts are limited to time and sense, I may regard nothing but myself, or, what amounts to the same thing, my own immediate circle, which becomes a kind of second self. But the moment eternity is seriously thought of, God must be brought in; and then I find that all my restless longings and searching after something to satisfy and fill my heart are the fruit of that heart having been alienated from God. When once this discovery is made, the question ceases to be, How am I to be satisfied? The one all absorbing question becomes, How is God to be satisfied? How is his deserved wrath to he appeased? How is his favor to be secured? Happy the man whose attention is thoroughly aroused to such inquiries! Thrice happy he who has had them resolved, by the light which the gospel affords as to the person and work of Christ.”

Some reporter for the Grand Rapids papers is responsible for saying that on Sabbath at the assembly meeting here we taught that Christ would return and the world come to an end in A. D. 1941. And papers in Chicago and other cities have been republishing the same; some of them with additions, saying we taught that the millennium was drawing near. In these things we have been misrepresented, as the congregation knows. We did figure out the two epochs of Dan. 12:11, 12 to fall due in 1896, and 1941. But instead of saying that this latter date would end time we distinctly stated the contrary; and from the Word, proved that time and probation would yet extend beyond that date, at least a short period, but no one could tell the exact number of months or years.

QUESTIONS.

_____

  1. Has a brother the right to baptize before he has been ordained?

  2. Has he a right to organize a body?

  3. Has he the right to administer the supper? Your brother in Christ,

J. M. S.

Ans. to first. Such should not administer the ordinance if regularly ordained and able-bodied ministers are in reach, who can attend to the matter. But the baptism of Paul by an ordinary disciple, as well as the spiritual liberty nature of the law of Christ suggest the idea that when the ordinance should be administered and no ordained minister is present, an unordained person may officiate.

Ans. to second. No. No unordained minister or any other man on earth has any right to organize a body. The body of Christ, which is the church is the only body authorized by the word of God, and he alone is able to organize the same, through the Holy Spirit. 1 Cor. 12.

Ans. to third. About the same answer given to No. 1 will apply here.

Please define the difference between Christian perfection and sinless perfection.

Your brother,

C. D. E.

They are one and the same. Christian perfection is that perfection taught and required by Christ; and in fact his own moral state. And his word teaches perfect freedom from sin. Rom. 6:22. 1 John 1:7, 9. Therefore Christ sanctifies his people through his blood, Heb. 13:12. and the state of perfection is the result of the grace of sanctification. Heb. 10:14. Hence Christian perfection is sinless perfection, or perfect purity.

Please explain 1 Tim. 5:23.

The passage reads as follows: “Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake, and thine oft infirmities.”

We have heard of some fanatics who attempt to spiritualize this text, and make the wine spoken of the Holy Spirit. But this is utter folly. First, God does not give us the Holy Spirit because of our infirmities, nor for our stomach’s sake. Second, if it alluded to the Spirit, the Apostle would not be apt to recommend “a little” of it, but would command him to be “filled with the Spirit.”

Again some try to explain the text so as to utterly exclude the use of natural means in the restoration of health. They have imbibed the notion that it is sinful in the sight of God to use anything whatever to remove afflictions, but faith and prayer to God, and the anointing with oil. Jas. 5:15. There can be no reasonable doubt that the Apostle meant what he said, and said what he meant in the words under question. Whether he intended the prescription as a cure, or only as a preventative of his oft attacks of affliction we cannot say, but that he advised it as a means of health there can be no doubt. And it is also a fact now well known that grapes, and the pure unfermented grape juice is a great healer of diseases. So much so that in France they have established a regular healing system by means of its use, called the “grape cure.”

This advise of Paul to Timothy may therefore be safely claimed as a scriptural support of the use of natural remedies for the healing of the body. Then the question naturally arises, When is it right to do so, and when not? We believe the Lord enables us to draw the line between the two. We will apply that pure and universal law of the New Testament, ‘Whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all to the glory of God.” Now there are some people who have never learned to see God in his creation. One brother actually wrote that if you employ any means for the restoration of the body from affliction, save faith and prayer to God, then you are not to give God any glory whatever, but all praise to the remedy. This were sensible advice if the devil or some other being besides God had created the forces of nature with their healing properties. But with the knowledge of the fact that God is the author of every good thing in the material world, it is a false and fanatical idea that he should have no thanks for any blessing derived from the use of things found in his natural storehouse. Now to any person who has been in the habit of drawing a line of distinction between God and his creation, and who looks upon the use of any natural remedy as departing from God, to him it were sin to do so. In any and every way that men resort to medicinal help INSTEAD of to God, or IN PREFERENCE to God, or because not willing to get right with God, all such is dishonoring to him. Also when the professed children of God put their bodies, which they claim to have consecrated to him, into the hands of physicians and blindly take their drugs, especially ungodly men, it is shamefully inconsistent with their professed knowledge of God, and his declared love and care for us. About the same may be said in reference to the purchase and use of the patent medicines instead of calling upon God or his elders.

But are there no conditions under which we may use remedial helps in affliction, to the glory of God? If not, we must conclude the Apostle Paul was not a proper representative of the faith of Christ. But we know better. He testified, “The life I now live, I live by the faith of the Son of God.” We know that heavenly wisdom requires us to inform ourselves in the laws of health, and to conform thereto in eating and drinking, etc. But the advice given to Timothy, though it might come under the head of hygienic living may properly be regarded remedial advice.

Now dear brethren, consider prayerfully what we tell you. There are conditions and reasons under which it is to the glory of God to use natural remedies for the removal of afflictions, and under which it were fanatical and superstitious to condemn men for so doing. First, it is a rule in the government of God that his creatures should not ask him to do for them, supernaturally, what they can do for themselves by the use of his gifts in nature. It were folly to withhold our hand from sowing and planting, with the plea we should trust God for our food. But what is the difference between such folly, and that of refusing to use something which God has freely given us, and which we know has the very elements within it to remove certain abnormal and painful conditions of our bodies? Again, we are to acknowledge God in all his ways, glorify him in all his works; and show our appreciation and gratitude to him for all his blessings both in his kingdom of nature and of grace. This we do by a proper, temperate, lawful, and grateful use of every thing he has given us in the storehouse of his grace, and in his world of creation, to the full extent of our knowledge of his supplies to meet our physical and spiritual wants.

It is a God-inspired and God- glorifying mind that acknowledges his hand in every good thing in nature, and that uses what Infinite Wisdom has created, to the extent these benign forces of nature are in our reach, and their virtues within our knowledge. At least to feel ourselves free to use them, and give God all the glory, just the same as if a miracle had been wrought.

Let us be understood. If you know nothing in nature that will produce the desired healing effect, take the case to God in prayer and faith. If you do know any thing at hand that will heal you, be free to use it if you wish, if you feel desirous to glorify God as the al-wise Creator. But, upon the other hand, even if you possess the means, and the knowledge of their virtue, be free to let them alone and take God direct, and give him the glory as the God of all grace. If the mind has altogether associated God with the Bible, conscience will naturally lead to the promises therein for healing. But a soul that has learned to revere God both as revealed in the Bible and in his great book of nature, will feel free to glorify God in being healed either through prayer, or equally as much in the use of some of his good creation which may be at hand, and well understood. Therefore it is all right to use God-created remedies, when the devout soul would do so wholly to the glory of God, and when to set aside their use would appear to treat with contempt the Creator of all good. All believers of the Bible should live near enough to God to take hold upon his promises for healing whenever needed. And no child of God should be so faithless as to resort to medicine or physicians because unable to believe for healing. That is a life far beneath the New Testament. And that is virtually resorting to medicine instead of to God. It is the sin that Asa committed, and which was followed by his death. 2 Chron. 16:12, 13. While this is all true, we humbly know by experience that a child of God may employ water, and such like precious gifts of God, for the removal of afflictions with a special view of giving him glory who has created these things. And, the work accomplished, the soul gives thanks, praise, and adoration to God just as devoutly as if the healing had been done by the power of God without his created means. But in all cases where saints know of no means to meet the case, or cannot conveniently procure them, or wherein they would not equally glorify God in the use of any thing as in faith and prayer only, in all such cases go to God in faith and prayer, or call for the elders. Never use means when you perceive God would be more glorified in your being healed without. But if a sincere child of God does use medicines through weakness of faith, do not reprove or rebuke such as if a sin had been committed, but labor to increase their faith to the Bible standard.

Let not such as use nature’s virtues out of honor to the Creator, judge such as do not. Nor such as utterly discard all natural means judge them who employ them to the glory of God.

Nature’s healing powers are however comparatively weak and limited. Nature’s God is almighty, and all things are possible to him that believeth.

It has been impressed upon my mind the last few days that perhaps the call to the sisters in respect to the book for girls was not as clear as it should be. Very few have responded and most of them were just the experience of getting salvation. Some have had very clear, strong experiences on different lines, which would be very interesting to girls in similar circumstances. For instance, Sister Birdie Fink’s experience in fashionable life to appeal to the girls of fashion, and Sister Cole’s experience in affliction for those in affliction, etc. A clearer description of the book as it now stands before me is needed that you may see your portion.

The title is, “Letters of Love and Counsel for Girls.” Each subject is written in loving letter form, and those before me now are Life, Religion, Conviction, Conversion, Sanctification, Love, Home, Pleasure, Fashion, Amusements, Dancing, Secret Sin, Marriage, Society Life, Purity, Sowing, Reaping, Wisdom, Heaven, death. Each subject needs several clear experiences to rivet it upon the minds of the readers. Let the Spirit of God direct, and all communication be sent in as speedily as possible, that I may have material to work into different subjects, so the work may move forward to completion during the winter. In Jesus’ love,

Dear Readers: We are glad we can report once more that the Lord is saving and keeping us, and using us in preaching his truth, and confirms the same. Since attending the camp meetings we have been laboring in these parts of Indiana, and have enjoyed the same and have been blest in preaching the gospel truth to the people which has resulted in the salvation of a few souls all along our line of labor. The Lord is supplying all our needs and keeping us by his power, for which we give him praise and glory. We expect to labor westward to Kansas, our home, from this point. We have been in company with Bro. T. E. Ellis, who has been used in preaching the Word. Remember us at a throne of divine grace. Yours saved and kept,

Dear Saints: Since our last report we held a two weeks meeting at Red Lion meeting house, with one consecration. There had been no preaching here for almost three years and those who once saw the light and did not accept it are more in darkness now than before they heard the present truth. From there we came to Mother Dotters on the A. V. R. R, an old mother almost eighty years old. She has been in this light about six years and enjoys good health and meeting with the saints. We held meeting three nights and over Sabbath here, during which time there were six consecrations. The meeting closed with a precious ordinance meeting, in which sixteen happy saints took

Dear Ones in the Common Faith of the Gospel: My soul is still exploring the land; the Holy Ghost is leading us into things both new and old. The dear Lord sent us to this place from western Pennsylvania a few days ago, to hold a meeting for some U. B. people who have been writing to us for several months past. We began meeting in their meeting house, which lasted two weeks; they have closed their doors against us. The meeting was moved to a private house where it continued for a few days longer, which resulted in victory for Jesus. Eighteen followed the Lord in baptism. Others under conviction. I think I never saw the powers of darkness, and hell so strong as in this place. The devil was bound in chains of darkness and ignorance, until the power of God’s truth broke his chains, then he began to show himself in his ugly works; rotten eggs, dirt, and stones were hurled at us, threats, mobs, accusations through the newspaper. It was surely a fearful time, but God delivered us out of it all. Praise his name! We did not expect to hold but the one meeting here; our intentions were to return to western Pennsylvania again, but it looks as though the Lord would have us remain here in these parts longer, as they are calling for another meeting about six miles from here. Now if the Lord wills us to stay we say amen, and trust him to send help from some quarter to carry on the work. Praise God! This is surely a needy field, no spiritual people have been in here; an awful drouth is on the people for hearing the word of the Lord. We are here alone with the Lord, working with him. Of course I am a very poor singer, and if we should remain here we are looking to Jesus to send some brother who can sing. Your brother decided for the whole truth. Amen.

San Francisco, Cal., Oct. 11.

Dearly Beloved Brethren: Our last report was written while on the Pacific Ocean, on the way to Cayucos. I came alone to that place, and went about twenty-two miles near Adelaide, and commenced meeting in a Union meeting house. As the gospel of full salvation and healing was declared with all boldness, the people came in from all directions, for many miles, many of whom came to remain until the meetings closed. Announcement was made to have a divine healing service on Saturday afternoon. The house was filled before time for services and after a lesson was given on that subject, an altar reaching across the house was immediately filled with earnest seekers after salvation and healing, about a dozen of whom were converted and several healed. One girl ten years of age who had been almost deaf for six years, was brought about thirty miles to be healed, and was not disappointed. Immediately after anointing and prayer she was tested before the whole audience and could hear perfectly, which caused many hardhearted sinners to be melted to tears, as they saw the signs following the Word, in the belief of the truth. The meeting continued until Oct. 7. Quite a number were saved, ten were baptized, and there were about thirty cases of healing. That country is now a ripe field for gospel work, and Bro. Dunning feels the hand of God upon him to give his time for the rescue of perishing souls.

From there I came on to spend a few days in San Francisco, and Oakland. Bro. J. W. Byers has located at 818 Brush St. Oakland, Cal. where he expects to open a divine healing home and mission in the city, where the sick and afflicted can come to hear the Word preached and be healed. A mission will also probably be started in San Francisco, which is just across the bay. The brethren along the coast should feel a special responsibility concerning this home and mission.

As Honolulu vessels are still quarantined and no public gatherings allowed there yet, and even private, or house to house work prohibited for a time on account of cholera, we felt it prudent not to go there at present, as but little work could be done until the way opens for public service, but we have made arrangements with a brother to place literature in that and other foreign fields. Yours in Him,

E. E. Byrum.

Rock Ferry, Eng , Oct. 7.

Dear Brethren: Our last report was from Birkenhead where God did a wonderful work in gathering out dear souls. God directed us to this place where we found a dear people hungering for the truth. The Lord has saved quite a number here already and there are more to follow. We had baptism last Saturday, when eleven dear souls followed Christ in that blessed ordinance. We are having the best of attendance and best of order. God bless the police who have taken such an interest in the meetings. Some of them nave got saved. Hundreds of dear people come every night. We had twenty-one nights of meeting without a break, lasting from one and a half hours to three hours every night. Truly this is the way to reach the people with the gospel, and there is no other that I can see. It takes men and women with an unction from the Holy One, also with good lungs to speak and sing in the open air. God has wonderfully sustained us in our labors. We are expecting to be able to preach from the Van platform at least another month, then no doubt it will be too cold to hold a crowd. Truly the harvest is great and the laborers are few. I hope, dear ones, you are praying for us. Sometimes I feel sad because no one writes to us or seems to take an interest in the work in this country and in Germay. Truly, dear ones, there is a wide and glorious field of labor for the right person? in these countries. I expect, Lord willing to be at the Grand Junction C. M. next June, after which we expect to return to our labors in this and other countries (of course we are subject to Father’s will in the matter). So now you that have had a (call to the foreign fields, get things ready to come along back and push the battle. I wish to say here we are very thankful for the lot of tracts we are in receipt of, and God bless the senders for the same. We have given out many hundreds of them in this city, and they have been a great help in showing the true light of the gospel. Our greatest enemies are professors For some nights there was a man came under the influence of drink and interrupted with the meeting. So I met the man on the street and spoke to him in regard to the matter, and he said he was very sorry that he had ever done such a thing, and asked me to forgive him. Then he said, “Would you believe me that I was sent there to interrupt your meetings by the — ? (naming one of the preachers here.) Instead of this ungodly Baal priest trying to turn the poor man from his wicked way, he pushed him farther into the bondage of sin. One could hardly credit this to be true, but it comes from a sensible man. Others are putting out the report that we are Mormons, or Latter Day Saints. Dear ones, let no one deceive you with this lie of the devil; all we can say to such as try to brand us with such a falsehood, is for Jesus’ sake get saved or you will have to spend your eternity in hell with all the Mormons and false and ungodly professors of all the ages. We are not Mormons nor Latter Day Saints, building on Joseph Smith and the book of Mormon Praise God, we are the saints of the living God, built upon Jesus Christ and the Book of books; namely, the word of God. Oh ye children of darkness, you cannot get behind the truth, then you must resort to your old weapon, a lie. Your time is short and you hate the truth, but you must have it and your time is come when the bed is too short to stretch yourself and cover to narrow to cover you.

This leaves us very well, glory to God, both soul and body. We have no evil report to bring, but a good one. We are not lacking any good thing. Our address will still be No. 2 Jolliffe St., Liverpool.

818 Brush St., Oakland, Cal., Oct. 12.

To all the Dear Readers of the Trumpet: Some time has again passed a way since I last reported through these columns. Each day has been crowded with something precious to my soul, and in many instances, great blessings, I trust, to those whom I have met in the various localities in the great territory over which I have passed. God has wonderfully kept me in perfect peace and safety, spirit soul and body. This season of more than five months has been strictly a work of faith in every respect, and you would all be surprised if I should say that God did not prove true. Well, I need not bring any such report. Praise his name! He has proved to be all that my little faith has taken him for. Many times he permitted thorough discipline and testing, but how sweetly those loving arms of protection and support were felt, when all human struggle had ceased, and faith could look up with confidence and say, “Father, thou knowest best.” Dear saints, I have found many new secrets of faith which by the grace of God I desire to practically apply in the spread of the glorious gospel of Christ. Would that I might have time and space with words of wisdom to tell you the secret of secrets, but dear ones, this can only be revealed by Him who Jesus said shall teach us all things It is all in the NAME OF JESUS. Well may we all become better acquainted with the mighty virtue of that name. Worlds of meaning lie couched in that wonderful name, and my soul is lost in amazement as I begin to see an occasional glimpse in the distance of the majestic authority and power that God has vested in that name. Oh hallelujah! Dear brethren, we are bordering upon awful but glorious ground; and my soul cries out with the apostle, “Who is sufficient for these things?” Truly it is holy ground, and none dare tread its hallowed bounds unless first the divine command is well heeded that was spoken through the flaming bush, “Put off thy shoes from off thy feet.” With the greater meaning and deeper import, does this command come to us in this most wonderful crisis of time. Oh my precious brethren, it seems to me we have been asleep. We have been so well satisfied with the doctrine and word, which indeed is glorious, but oh don’t you see there has been a great weakness all along the line? What is it? Let the apostle answer. “For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in POWER, and in the HOLY GHOST and in MUCH ASSURANCE.” 1 Thess. 1:5. Well, we know assuredly that when the Bible price is individually paid, the Lord will be responsible for the results. Let us each get at it at once as did Daniel, (Dan. 9:3), and see if there is not a marked improvement in the apostolic direction. Praise the Lord!

If I remember, my last report was from Woodburn, Ore. From that C. M. Bro. and Sister Jacobson began tabernacle meetings at Salem Ore. I assisted them in the beginning. The field was new and much hinddrance to the work was realized. A few had found the Lord in the various gospel benefits before I left. Said farewell to Bro. and Sister Jacobson at Salem Sept. 9 and went south to Roseburg, where Bro. and Sister Hudson were holding meetings. The Lord had saved a number of souls, and the truth well founded in many hearts. At the ordinance meeting there about eighteen participated. After a week with the dear ones there I came on south to Meridian, Cal. There the way was not opened, at the time, for meeting, so after a few days of rest and refreshment with dear Bro. and Sister Thornbrough, and a short visit with other saints, I felt in God’s order to go on to the Los Angeles camp meeting. This was a happy surprise to myself, as I had not previously thought it practical for me to get to that distant meeting. But the dear Master ordered it his way, and I accordingly reached the dear saints assembled in a blessed meeting. Here were witnessed many features of primitive days. The blessings in common both spiritual and temporal proved God true to his word. The well provided tables were open to all who wished to eat, and there was no such thing known as lack. Bro’s Byrum, Daugherty, and Schroeder had preceded me to this meeting A number of souls received benefits in justification, sanctification and healing, and many of the church deeper established. About seventy- five took part in the ordinance meeting. This C. M. was a very profitable one in many respects, and will tell in the future for God and his precious cause. Feeling now that I should not return north without visiting the church at San Diego, I waited upon the Lord for guidance, and accordingly met in one general meeting with the dear ones. Nearly all from the city and surrounding places were present. The Lord blessed our short visit together. Returned to Los Angeles and next day started for this new field, where the harvest truly is great. This is a great center of the Pacific coast, and in many respects well adapted for a central work. Also it is the gateway to all foreign fields west. My soul has yearned for San Francisco and Oakland ever since we came to California, but the Lord has seen proper to give us five years of schooling in other cities first. Now we do intend by the grace of God to do his will perfectly by faithfully and boldly holding up the full gospel to these sin-cursed cities. Oh how my heart is stirred within me as I look over this field, and I am persuaded, dear saints, that the responsibility of this work rests upon each of you. The Lord will have a divine healing mission and home here, but it must be built upon the foundation of self sacrifice, otherwise it cannot exist. The self sacrifice of dear wife and myself is not sufficient for more than a few stones or a mud sill to be hid underground in the foundation, but with the sacrifice of each of you with your prayers, faith, tears, and means, will build up a structure that will advance the precious evening light mightily and make Jerusalem a praise in the earth. Will write more later, giving description of the work as the Lord leads. Expect to meet my dear family here soon. Our residence address for the present will be 818 Brush St., Oakland, Cal. We are taking a step beyond our previous experience in this work, but by the grace of heaven we take it, and make Him our refuge. Dear ones, do remember us at the throne of mercy.

“If you cannot be a watchman,
Standing high on Zion’s wall,
Pointing out the path to heaven,
Offering life and peace to all;

With your prayers and with your bounties,
You can do what Heaven demands, —
You can be like faithful Aaron,
Holding up the prophet’s hands.”

Your humble brother, set for the defense of the gospel,

J. W. Byers.

MAPES. — Sister Ardella Bertha Mapes died Oct. 1, 1895, with consumption. She was born May 6, 1865; aged thirty years, four months and twenty-four days. She had tried at one time to be a Christian but gave up, thence lived a worldly life and tried to be an infidel. About three months before her death was converted at home, while visiting her. She increased in God and loved the company of saints to the last, and died triumphantly in Jesus. We went about fifteen miles north, to Sparta, and preached the funeral sermon in the M. E. house to an interesting congregation, and laid her body to rest till Christ comes. She leaves a husband and one child.

SIMMS. — Jimmie, the only child of Mr. J. and Sister S. E. Simms, departed this life to be with Jesus, Oct. 15, 1895. Jimmie was fourteen years old the second day of Oct. He was much loved by all; said during his illness he was not afraid to die. He will be greatly missed by all especially by his mother, as he was almost constantly in her company outside of school hours. The mother has been out in the evening light for several years. May the dear Lord support her in her severe trials. And may the father prepare to meet their child in heaven. Services conducted by the writer, at Sister Simms residence, in West Plains.

EWELL. — Sister Stella Ewell died Oct. 5, 1895; aged sixteen years, six months and twelve days. Sister Stella was saved at twelve years old; lived and died happy in the Lord; had been preaching for some time. Sister Stella and her mother, E. R. Ewell, came to assist in a meeting that we were holding six or seven miles from Frisco, Ark., where she was taken sick the first day of October. Was sick five days. She called for the elders the first day she was sick, did not seem to get much better; the fourth day she called for the prayer of faith and the anointing with oil. As we met the Word, pains and suffering all left her. She slept all night without waking up. Died next morning praising God, leaving a mother, four sisters, two brothers, and a number of friends to mourn her loss. May God bless the bereaved and draw them unto him that they may join her around the throne in heaven. Funeral services by the writer.

MARSH. — Bro. Merton H. Marsh was born May 13, 1877, and died Oct. 13, 1895; aged eighteen years and five months. Four years ago he came here to the Trumpet Office to give his service to the Lord in helping to rescue lost souls. He learned to set type and devoted most of his time to that work during his three years stay with the Trumpet family. He was a smart boy and very willing to work, and was one of the swiftest type setters here. The sermons that those hands preached have probably been the means of bringing many poor souls into the light of the pure gospel.

Last winter he left the Office to live with his parents at Evanston, a suburb of Chicago, He secured a situation in a printing office in Chicago, at which place he worked till the time of his sickness. He was over to visit us during the June camp meeting, and that was the last we saw him alive. He was taken sick with typhoid fever about five weeks ago and was removed to the hospital, at which place he died. He lived a devoted Christian, and there is no doubt that he went home to glory. His last words were, “All is well.” It was with sadness that we read the telegram announcing his death. His funeral took place in the cemetery chapel at Rose Hill, Ill., and his body was laid to rest near by. After the sermon, the man for whom Merton had been working, talked a few minutes, and in his remarks he said, “There was one thing I always liked about Merton, and that was that whatever he believed to be right he always lived up to in spite of all the opposition that came against him.” May God bless and comfort the sad hearts of the parents and brothers and sisters, and may they each live so they can meet again in the world beyond the skies.

Another soul has winged its way
To rest beyond the skies,
Another mound now marks the spot
Where Merton’s body lies.

Though lie was yet in rosy youth,
And future days seemed fair,
Yet God who doeth all things well,
Had summoned him “up there.”

The return of Zion from captivity.

_____

Therefore behold the days come, saith the Lord, that they shall no more say, The Lord liveth, which brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt; but the Lord liveth, which brought up and which led the seed of the house of Israel out of the north country, and from all countries whither I had driven them; and they shall dwell in their own land.” Jer. 23:7, 8. “For I have heard a voice as a woman in travail, and the anguish as of her that bringeth forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of Zion, that bewaileth herself, that spreadeth her hands, saying, Woe is me now! for my soul is wearied because of murderers.” Jer. 4:31.

Ask ye now, and see whether a man doth travail with child? Wherefore do I see every man with his hands on his loins, as a woman in travail and all faces are turned into paleness? Alas!, for that day is great, so that none is like it; it is even the time of Jacob’s trouble, but he shall be saved out of it. For it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord of hosts, that I will break his yoke from off thy neck; and will burst thy bonds and strangers shall no more serve themselves of him; but they shall serve the Lord their God. Jer. 30:6-9. In the 24th verse the prophet says, “In the latter days ye shall consider it.” The cry spoken of by the prophet has been sounding forth for some years, and many have heeded the command of the living God.

“Arise ye and let us go up to Zion, unto the Lord our God. For thus saith the Lord; Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout among the chief of the nations: publish ye, praise ye, and say. O Lord, save thy people, the remnant of Israel. Behold I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the coasts of the earth, and with them the blind, and the lame, the woman with child, and her that travaileth with child together: a great company shall return thither. They shall come with weeping, and with supplications will I lead them. I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters in a straight way, wherein they shall not stumble, for I am a Father to Israel, and Ephraim is my first-born. Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall flow together to the goodness of the Lord, for wheat, and wine, and for oil, and for the young of the flock and of the herd: and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all. Jer. 31:6-9, 12.

The Lord will gather his people. “And the Lord shall utter his voice before his army: for he is strong that executeth his word; for the day of the Lord is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?” Joel 2:11. “The Lord also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice out of Jerusalem. And the heavens (ecclesiastical) and the earth shall shake; but the Lord will be the hope of his people and the strength of the children of Israel.” Joel 3:16. “In that day, saith the Lord, will I assemble her that halteth, and I will gather her that I have afflicted; and I will make her that halteth a remnant, and her that was cast far off a strong nation, and the Lord shall reign over them in mount Zion from henceforth even forever. Micah 4:6, 7.

“As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered, so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day. I will feed them in a good pasture, and upon the high mountains of Israel shall their fold be. Ezek. 34:12, 14.

And I will give her vineyards from thence, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope, and she shall sing there, as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt. And it shall be at that day, saith the Lord, that thou shalt call me Ishi (my husband), and shall call me no more Baali (my lord). For I will take away the names of Baalim out of her mouth, and they shall no more be remembered by their name. And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven, and with the creeping things of the ground, and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth, and will make them to He down safely. And I will betroth thee unto me forever; yea I will betroth thee unto me in righteousness and in judgment, and in loving kindness and in mercies. I will even betroth thee unto me in faithfulness, and thou shalt know the Lord, etc. Hosea 2:14-20.

Oh how wonderful and glorious it is to live in these latter days and enjoy God in the language of this prophecy, having been redeemed by judgment, Isaiah 1:27, and become of the holy remnant returned unto the mighty God. Isa. 10:21. Oh hallelujah! We now come with joy and gladness. Isa. 35:10.

It is to be universal wherever God’s remnant is. “This is the purpose that is purposed upon the whole earth, and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all the nations. For the Lord of hosts hath purposed and who shall disannul it? and his hand is stretched put and who shall turn it back?” Isa. 14:26, 27. What shall one then answer the messengers of the nation? That the Lord hath founded Zion, and the poor of his people shall trust in it. (Margin reads, betake themselves unto it.) Isa. 14:32, See Psa. 87:5, 6. Heb. 12:22-24.

“And the Lord shall be king over all the earth; in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one.” See Dan. 2:44. Rev. 11:15. “For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they all call upon the name of the Lord, to serve him with one consent.” Zeph, 3:9. See Eph. 1:8-10.

GOD’S COMMAND TO THEM THAT HAVE RETURNED.

Arise and thresh, O daughter of Zion, for I will make thine horn iron, and I will make thy hoofs brass, and thou shalt beat in pieces many people, and I will consecrate their gain unto the Lord, and their substance unto the Lord of the whole earth.” See Acts 4:31-35. Isa. 2:2, 3. Isa. 23:18. Isa. 41:15, 16. “Ye that have escaped the sword, go away, stand not still.” Jer. 51:50. “The voice of them that flee and escape out of the land of Babylon to declare in Zion the vengeance of the Lord our God, the vengeance of his temple. Call together the archers against Babylon; all ye that bend the bow, camp against round about, let none thereof escape, recompense her according to her work, according to all that she hath done, do unto her, for she hath been proud against the Lord, against the holy one of Israel.” Isa. 50:28, etc. Behold, I will make thee a new sharp threshing instrument having teeth; thou shalt thresh the mountains and beat them small, and shalt make the hills as chaff. Isa. 41:15. The voice of them that flee and escape out of the land of Babylon to declare in Zion the vengeance of the Lord our God, the vengeance of his temple. Jer. 50:28.

The Lord hath brought forth our righteousness; come, and let us declare in Zion the work of the Lord our God, etc. Jer. 51:10. They shall ask the way to Zion with their faces thitherward, saying, Come and let us join ourselves to the Lord in a perpetual covenant that shall not be forgotten. Jer. 50:5. Hosea 3:5. Jer. 15:19-21.

DEAR Reader: I call your solemn attention to the following facts which now are and which must shortly come to pass: one horrible spectacle now to be seen on earth, is the Judas-like hypocritical and false spirit of so-called Protestantism, in utterly making an unconditional surrender to the very power and foe she once declared everlasting rebellion against. I mean by the term Protestantism, all so-called Protestant churches, which are not founded on the word of God.

What gave rise to Protestantism? When the Lord separated his people from Roman Catholicism, they were called Protestants, because they protested against that wicked power, that is against the licentiousness, hypocrisy, superstition and idolatry thereof. It was God, I say, that brought about this great reformation. Have not all Protestants heretofore professedly averred that God raised up “the good old reformers” to call his sheep out of Babylon and restore the gospel to the people?

Now, let us consider upon what this great reformation was based. It was based upon the word of God, backed up and executed by the Holy Ghost through his ministers, for the time had come for its fulfillment. It was impossible for God’s people to obey the gospel of his Son and live righteous lives, and continue in and attached to the Romish church, “the mother of harlots.” Therefore he, the Lord, commanded a separation.

This wicked power was and is the first beast. John, the Revelator, saw it rise up out of the sea. It issued forth from the devil and soon became completely equipped, harnessed and characterized by all his works and dark nature. I have given you the foregoing brief description of the first beast to better introduce the consideration of the second beast. Now, dear reader, whoever you may be, accept and observe this fact, that God is unchangeable, “The same yesterday, to-day and forever.” Would the Lord separate his people from one awful ecclesiasticism, and give them license to join, fellowship and constitute another extremely wicked one, founded upon the traditions and doctrines of men and devils? What was and is one of the chief characteristics of the Romish sect? What is becoming one of the chief distinctions of the second beast? Is it not to bring all people down to her belief and doctrines, and under her rule and government? If God’s people could not worship him and do his will, while they remained votaries of the mother of harlots, how can they any more succeed in righteousness, and please the Father, while they sport themselves in constituting only another ecclesiasticism, as dark, deceptive and hypocritical as the one out of which they but a few centuries ago emerged? Protestants now deny in works and much in doctrine, the very mission and things they once espoused. They say that the Romish church is greatly reformed. But how can this be, when she still clings to all her heretical, superstitious doctrines and tenets? Dear reader, God has said this great spiritual Babylon shall never rise again. Rev. 18:21. This forever fixes the seal and destination of false Protestantism, as well as all other parts of the great Babylonish city.

As much has been written through the TRUMPET concerning and exposing the abominations of all Babylon, I will close my article by exhibiting the true position and sentiment of the professedly best people of sectism. It is this: every one that cries, “Come out of her my people,” they denominate fanatics, crazy, possessed of devils and wild-fire teachers. They would have you to remain in her. They even require nothing said about the hypocrisy and general antagonism to holiness, unless it is done in a very easy, smooth manner. Such is the position and teaching of the CHRISTIAN STANDARD, an international holiness journal, published by the Methodists. Oh my God! Let us believe the whole word of God, and know that what he has said, he also will do, irregardless of Babylon’s false prophesies to the contrary. False Protestantism being in the majority, will soon compel all people, who have not their names written in the Lamb’s book of life, to confess the Romish church, the mother church, and in this she will be backed up by the political powers. But glory to God! he is omnipotent and able to bring his children safely through one more period of martyrdom. Dear reader, are you ready?

J. L. Dennis.

Dear Brethren: I feel that I would not be altogether clear if I did not write and express my thankfulness to God, and the brother for the article on “THE WORD OF GOD; WHAT IS IT?” I have been studying the Word for years and claimed to make it my guide in all things, but when I read that article I soon saw that I had only one foot, as it were, on the Word, and the other on some demonstration or manifestation of something else; confirming the word by this other something, instead of confirming the other by the Word. God help all to understand this, especially those teaching the people the way of righteousness, that the word of God is pre-eminent, and that every thought, word and action must conform to it, and by it we must try every spirit. I thought I was doing so, but how far I failed, God knows; that I failed I now plainly see. I also see why I did not advance faster, and why there were so many mountains in my way. Pray for me, brethren, that I may be established on the Word, to the glory of God through Jesus Christ.

Dear Saints of God: In the winter of 1868, God pardoned my sins and I lived justified up to all the light that I had, but was not sanctified. I felt there was more in that great store house of God for me. But the way to get it was the mystery to me. I had not heard holiness taught, and could not find an old soldier of the cross that could tell me anything, or what was the matter with me. At last it seemed that ali earthly friends had turned against me, and persecution was so great that die I must, and die I did, to sin, and Christ made me a free woman; and to-day I am basking in the sunlight of Goo’s free grace, cleansed from all sin, justified freely by his grace and sanctified wholly through his cleansing blood. Hallelujah to his name! Oh can’t some one or more of the saints come down here in the Indian Territory and hold a meeting? some one that has the healing power? That God’s name may be magnified in this Indian country. Let all the saints pray that my four remaining children maybe saved and sanctified, and for my two sons-in-law. I am saved from everything but Christ, and I am married to him. Yours under the blood,

Mary E. Starr.
